This week’s biggest local news was a onetwo punch. First, we had Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ decision to extend his reopening order — which caught attention mostly because he appended a statement forbidding local governments from enforcing any fines or penalties on businesses that do not meet local standards for COVID safety, like those who flout mask mandates or restaurant capacity. Next, Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings made a statement of his own — that Orange County strike teams would be visiting businesses to assess whether they were complying with county COVID safety standards, and, indeed, fining those “bad actors” who ignore said standards. Get out the popcorn! I loved the article “Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings signs executive order instituting fines against local businesses for COVID-19 violations.” I am of the same mind as the mayor that businesses need to have consequences. People don’t learn and often won’t care if they don’t have consequences and I think that this order is a step in the right direction. The only thing that I worry about is if the fines will be enough to make the businesses listen and fix what they are doing. Depending on how much they make, some places could afford a fine depending on which level it is. They also could simply raise their prices to accommodate for the extra charge. Hopefully, though, this will not be the case and we will see less cases. People should

not be going to bars and nightclubs until we have all had the vaccine. It’s not safe and it is extremely irresponsible. — Rachel Daniel, Davenport We need a governor who is not in Trump’s pocket. The idea that he would ban all previous preventions is suicide for many people. How in the world can he justify this when the total cases have now reached over 1,000,000? — Charlene Brooks, The Villages @Rachel Smith I’d love to see Orange County pair some carrots with this stick by recognizing and rewarding businesses that comply with CDC recommendations. Businesses who enforce masks and social distancing should get priority consideration for CARES Act grants, for example. @Adam Massimo I love all these “adults” who need the government to protect them from a virus with a 99.8% survivability. I bet all these snowflakes are loving the colder weather! @Virginia Wright He’s doing the right thing! Offenders have been given adequate chances to comply! @Dave Hardison Putting aside the arguments about the purpose of government, just wear your face masks. It is easy, cheap, and works almost as well as a vaccine.

DISAPPOINTMENT GUARANTEED Obama took office with the wind at his back. Biden won’t. BY JEFFREY C. BILL M A N
L
ike most Progressives of a Certain Age, I’ve spent the last few weeks slogging through volume one of Barack Obama’s presidential memoir, A Promised Land, which is very long, occasionally revealing, and most insightful when Obama tiptoes toward self-interrogation — pondering decisions he made and deals he cut and whether he should have spoken his mind more forthrightly. These reflective moments, however, are brief and end the same way: Obama concludes that he did what he could, and his allies on the left didn’t appreciate the constraints he was under. To this day, Obama has little patience for activists who make what he considers impractical demands. So the shade he threw in a recent interview at Defund the Police messaging wasn’t surprising: “If you believe, as I do, that we should be able to reform the criminal justice system so that it’s not biased and treats everybody fairly, I guess you can use a snappy slogan, like Defund the Police, but, you know, you lost a big audience the minute you say it, which makes it a lot less likely that you’re actually going to get the changes you want done.” Obama — echoing the complaints of moderate congressional Dems that Black Lives Matter protests this spring and summer hurt them in November — is probably correct
that the “snappy slogan” was suboptimal electoral messaging. But BLM activists aren’t marching to win elections for Democratic politicians in rural Pennsylvania. They want to effect meaningful policy changes in municipal governments that control police departments. Like Obama, Joe Biden will be bequeathed by his Republican predecessor a slew of domestic and foreign policy disasters. Thousands of people are dying each day from COVID, wide distribution of a vaccine is months away, and the Trump administration has checked out. Federal unemployment assistance is slated to run out in weeks even as the recovery slows. A tsunami of evictions and foreclosures looms on the horizon. Another round of stay-at-home orders could prove the death knell of much of the restaurant and bar industry. Meanwhile, President Trump is abruptly withdrawing troops from Iraq, Afghanistan and Somalia, inflaming tensions with Iran and China, executing as many federal inmates as he can cram into a death chamber, and embedding Trump loyalists in the civil service. Not to mention, he’s also spent every waking hour this last month sowing doubts about Biden’s victory. Unlike Obama, Biden won’t command overwhelming congressional majorities. And the Republican radicaliza-
tion — and, frankly, detachment from reality — that began in earnest under Obama hit its zenith under Trump. There will be no appetite for compromise, only obstruction. Republicans, in fact, have signaled that they’re about to get born again (again) on the deficit — and history suggests Beltway journalists will greet this cynical posturing with wild-eyed credulity rather than the eye-roll it warrants. In his conclusion to a chapter on climate change efforts, Obama observed: “I realize that for all the power inherent in the seat I now occupied, there would always be a chasm between what I knew should be done to achieve a better world and what in a day, week or year I found myself actually able to accomplish.” That sentence frames much of the memoir’s tension: what he thought was necessary versus what he thought was possible. Wizened and battle-scarred, the same Barack Obama who hit the national stage in a bolt of idealism has come to not only embrace the possible, but to believe that those fighting to change the parameters of possibility are making changing things difficult. I’ve been wondering what would have happened if the Obama of 2009 had reimagined what was possible. Most Democrats have since been cured of their reverence for the Senate filibuster. This summer, in fact, Obama called it a “Jim Crow relic.” But that wasn’t on the table his first year in office. If it had been, think of how differently his presidency could have played out: a bigger and more effective stimulus; a public option and more generous health care bill; cap and trade legislation that laid the groundwork for a binding global agreement; immigration reform that enshrined DACA into law. The raw politics might have been off-brand for President Hopey-Changey, but the policy outcomes would have matched those of any president since at least FDR. Obama took office with the wind at his back. Biden won’t. With a narrower House majority, Dem centrists have made “defund” and anything that smacks of socialism scapegoats for their lackluster showing; they’ll hardly be eager to champion ambitious progressive legislation. Meanwhile, Biden needs a lucky break in the January Georgia runoffs to have a prayer of moving legislation through the Senate — and even then, he’ll need to convince recalcitrant Dems to jettison the filibuster and get Joe Manchin’s stamp of approval on just about everything. To his credit, Biden seems to have taken to heart lessons from his former boss’ presidency. His economic brain trust doesn’t solely comprise deficit scolds. He’s entertained forgiving student debt. So far, he’s also made good on his promise to integrate climate crisis policy throughout the federal government. He’ll likely start his term with a raft of executive orders on immigration and the environment. But it’s inevitable that progressives will find themselves disappointed with Biden, and sooner than later. There’s perhaps never been a larger gap between what this country needs to do and what its politicians can accomplish. Get Informed Dissent delivered straight to your inbox several times a week. Study: Massive increase in sexual harassment directed at restaurant workers during pandemic You would think that, during a pandemic that’s wiping out thousands of Americans each day, people would treat others with compassion and do everything in their power to ensure the safety of not only themselves, but also their neighbors, right? As it turns out that’s a big nope, at least from those choosing to dine in at restaurants. A new study found that service industry workers, who even in non-pandemic times are paid well below minimum wage, are now facing even more challenges as people continue to opt for maskless brunch outings and act like total dirtbags to those putting their lives on the line to serve them. A new report from One Fair Wage surveyed 1,675 food service workers between Oct. 20 and Nov. 10 from five states — New York, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Illinois and Pennsylvania — as well as Washington, D.C. The study found that not only are servers receiving piss-poor tips, they’re also being harassed for enforcing social distancing and mask-wearing. The study, titled “Take off your mask so I know how much to tip you,” found that more than 80 percent of food industry workers have seen a decline in tips, while 40 percent claim sexual harassment from customers has increased. In some situations, food service workers endure “maskual harassment,” a disgusting new phenomenon in which restaurant-goers request the server remove their mask to gauge how much they should be tipped — which, if they comply, puts them at an increased risk of contracting the virus. “We were really shocked with how horrific the situation truly is,” president of One Fair Wage Saru Jayaraman said in an interview with NPR’s “Weekend Edition.” “But I think the most horrific thing, that honestly all of us who are involved in the study were all blown away by, was the huge increase in hostility and sexual harassment,” Jayaraman said To support the data, nearly 250 of the surveyed employees shared unwanted comments they received. A substantial portion were requests from male customers that female workers remove their mask so that they could judge their looks, and — implicitly — determine their tips on that basis. “He asked me to take my mask off so
they could see my face and decide how much to tip me. I kicked them out,” one response read. While openly deciding a tip based on a server’s looks is cringey on its own, workers submitted responses that were even more disturbing: “A man cut a hole in [his mask] and asked a co-worker if she sat on his face would he get COVID?” read another. And it’s not just harassment and tips that service industry professionals are concerned about. The study also found that 44 percent of workers surveyed reported that “at least one or more of their co-workers” had contracted the virus, with 84 percent reporting “being within six feet of at least one person who is not wearing a mask” during each shift, and 33 percent claiming they’re in dangerously close quarters with 30 or more maskless guests each shift. More than one-third of workers reported that “their employer had not conducted a mandatory training on COVID safety protocols,” and 70 percent of workers say their employers aren’t consistent when following measures to keep guests and staff safe. Additionally, 60 percent of workers who rely on tips say they’re hesitant when it comes to enforcing pandemic protocols, like asking customers to remain masked when moving throughout the restaurant or maintain social distancing while dining, because they fear it could risk how much they are tipped or whether they’ll be harassed as a result. In September, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that adults who tested positive for the coronavirus were “twice as likely” to have dined at a restaurant two weeks before reporting symptoms. What the One Fair Wage study reveals most clearly is that those working in the service industry are scared. One solution proposed by the organization’s president could put an end to workers feeling the need to coddle and cater to abusive customers because they’re fearful they may not receive a decent tip. “When you get a full wage from your boss, you don’t have to put up with everything from the customers,” Jayaraman said. In Florida, tipped workers make $5.54 an hour. – by Jerilyn Jordan
Happy ending for manatee that suffered both tire entrapment and boat strike
A manatee who had became entangled in a bicycle tire last year was spotted in Blue Spring State Park last week, completely free of this crappy, very painful, hula hoop-
esque entrapment. The escape-artist manatee — who had been dubbed “Schwinn” by researchers and “Wheelie” by concerned manatee enthusiasts — was spotted by keen-eyed manatee watchers from the Manatee Rescue and Rehabilitation Partnership in Blue Spring State Park as manatees returned to the springs during last week’s cold front. Since last November, representatives from several wildlife organizations have all attempted to separate “Schwinn” from the tire trap, to no avail. The naturally suspicious Schwinn steered well clear of any and all rescue boats (and who can blame the creature for wanting to avoid a species that throws whole bicycle tires into rivers?). Researchers aren’t exactly certain how the manatee made the daring escape but — are you ready for this sadness? — the tire was somewhat weakened by a boat propeller that struck Schwinn in February. (Seriously? This manatee is a hero.) Schwinn unfortunately has deep scars from the lengthy period of tire encirclement, but other than that, seems to be doing as well as can be expected, and quite contented to vacation in Blue Spring State Park. – by Matthew Moyer
Florida’s Confederate holidays will be targeted in 2021 legislative session
State Rep. Mike Grieco, D-Miami Beach, wants lawmakers to eliminate legal holidays honoring the birthdays of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee and Confederate President Jefferson Davis, along with a Confederate Memorial Day. Grieco on Thursday filed a bill to remove the Lee, Davis and Confederate Memorial days from a list of legal holidays on the books in Florida. A similar effort in 2018 was approved by one Senate committee but did not pass the Legislature after it drew objections from people who argued the proposal would erase Southern history. Lee’s birthday, Jan. 19, and Confederate Memorial Day, April 26, have been legal holidays in Florida since 1895. Davis’ birthday, June 3, was added in 1905. Florida is one of five states that continues to keep Confederate Memorial Day a legal holiday, though legal holidays are not necessarily paid holidays for public employees. Grieco filed his proposal for consideration during the 2021 legislative session, which begins March 2. — by News Service of Florida

There’s only so much corporate cheer a person can handle — try some down-home holiday entertainment that doesn’t take itself so seriously In recent weeks, I’ve attended
more Central Florida holiday events than I can count on both hands. I’ve heard hundreds of heart-warming carols, seen thousands of twinkling lights, and taken socially distanced selfies with a minyan of Santa Clauses. At the risk of sounding Scrooge-ish, there’s only so much corporate cheer a sane person can endure. So, if you too are craving down-home holiday entertainment that doesn’t take itself quite so seriously, here are two off-kilter options that truly capture what it means to celebrate Christmas in the Sunshine State. GATORLAND HOLIDAY HO HO HODOWN CHRISTMAS It’s been almost five years since I last visited Orlando’s oldest continually operating attraction — over 70 years! — and it’s obvious CEO Mark McHugh and his staff have upgraded the “alligator capital of the world” in the intervening half-decade. No longer content with simply billing itself as the area’s “best day attraction,” the park now proudly leans into its legacy as a redneck-friendly roadside with a corn-pone comedic sensibility that’s exemplified by this first iteration of what’s hoped to be an annual seasonal event. Rural humor may have exited the American mainstream after CBS canceled Green Acres and Hee Haw in 1971, but it’s still alive and well in the South, and Gatorland’s emerging identity smartly capitalizes on that market niche without becoming either crass and puerile, or condescending and patronizing. It’s a deceptively delicate balance to walk, but working with ginormous reptiles must accustom them to watching their step. Visit Gatorland any day through Christmas, and you’ll be able to spot merrily macabre sculptures of melting snowmen installed around the park, along with a witty “gingerbread trailer park,” complete with an outhouse and chicken-chomping

gators; search for a sweet Grogu reference among the giant cookies. However, you need to attend on a weekend if you want to enjoy musical performances from the Gator Dans (a swampy spoof of Disney’s singing group) or an outrageous original Christmas story by park ambassador Savannah Boan, involving Santa getting a full body cavity search at Trump’s border wall. Also make time to visit with Gator Claws — whose sleigh is led by an antlered alligator with a Rudolph-red nose — and the Santa hat-clad Socially Distanced Skunk Ape, two of the most beautifully bizarre meet & greet characters I’ve ever encountered outside Times Square. Most importantly, spend the extra $2 for the Christmas Express train ride around the park to hear “Bubba’s Christmas Crisis,” a new “Night Before Christmas” parody with original music and props; for my money, it’s a more satisfying seasonal overlay than the Magic Kingdom’s Jingle Cruise. (Dec. 12-13, 19-20; gatorland.com) THE GOLDEN GALS: A CHRISTMAS MUSICAL AT HÄOS ON CHURCH Thanks to social distancing, I’m not spending as much time as usual at my friends’ houses this holiday season, but I made an exception to visit Blue Star’s HÄOS on Church Street, the freshly opened bar/restaurant/performance venue that I previewed in September. Since then, a stunning renovation was completed that highlights the historic building’s brick bones and adds an opulent atmosphere with vintage furnishings and whimsical artwork on the walls. Upstairs is an intimate cabaret space that feels like the upscale offspring of Theatre Downtown’s lobby and the Footlight Theater. (Fittingly, former Parliament House owners Don Granatstein and Susan Unger were in attendance last Friday to support Blue’s new venture.) Unlike the
much-mourned P-House, this HÄOS’ bar specializes in elaborate craft cocktails with hipster ingredients like aquafaba and pink peppercorns, and a “mask-sip-mask” policy is strictly enforced. My rye-based “New York State of Mind” was intensely sour, but the champagne & Chambord “Christmas in Miami” was simply mahvelous. The same could be said about this season’s revival of The Golden Gals: A Christmas Musical, a spot-on singing satire of the 1980s sitcom The Golden Girls that christened Blue’s new stage. Directorproducer Ginger Minj, who also co-stars as Blanche, had ambitions plans for TV Land Live’s season that were derailed by 2020, but this tightly paced in-the-round production inspires hope for the series’ resurgence next year, as well as HÄOS’ potential for immersive theater. The crack comedic cast also features Gidget Galore as Rose, Mr./Ms. Adrian as Sophia and Doug Ba’aser as Stan. Extra applause goes to Divine Grace’s dead-on Dorothy, who evokes Bea Arthur’s vocal and facial tics with eerie accuracy, as well as preshow vocalists Josh Roth and Heather Abood, whose lip-synced classic commercials make the scene changes sidesplitting. Downstairs, Chef Michael Magonigle’s après-show menu exceeds all my expectations; I practically licked the brown butter off my salmon’s plate. Paired with a rotating roster of skilled variety artists (mime Ronnie “ronniep0p” Stripling, aerialist Mariah Wise and vocalist Evan Fagan, during my visit) who entertain while Blue herself plays DJ, HÄOS provides an eatertainment experience that exclusive Vegas supper clubs could envy. And the best part of all? Employment for a few more Orlando performers, just in time for the holidays. (Dec. 12-13, 19-20; tvlandlive.com) skubersky@orlandoweekly.com orlandoweekly.com

CHUCK IT DOWN
Blue Star, the godmother of the local burlesque scene, has opened HÄOS on Church, a two-story restaurant/performance venue in the old Lion’s Pride space on, you guessed it, Church Street. Chefs Michael Magonigle and Andrew Jones of Kres Chophouse man the kitchen. Check their Facebook and Instagram pages for a schedule of events … Mamak Asian Street Food has opened its second location in the old Pei Wei spot on Technological Avenue near UCF … Island Fin Poke has opened an outpost in Windermere. Look for another to open in the former First Watch space on West State Road 434 in Longwood in the new year … Aurora Restaurant, inside the newly opened Celeste Hotel on North Alafaya Trail, is now serving an ambitious menu of global fare … CFS Coffee, the Colombian coffee house that started off in Hannibal Square, has opened their fourth location in the old OK, But First Coffee space at the Fountains Plaza on West Sand Lake Road. Look for a fifth cafe to open in Lake Nona next year … A new Mexican restaurant will move into the short-lived 6 Cafe & Lounge building in Altamonte Springs.

Quality burgers make What the Chuck a must-stop at this railroad depot–turned–food hall BY FAIYAZ KARA

ou can keep your thick-ass, comes charred, crusty and draped with hockey-puck-pattied, boffo burg- melted American cheese. Grilled onions ers. Me, I like ’em done in the and yellow mustard give it all the flavor it classic manner, like the ones Lou Reed needs, and the squishy bun (it’s brioche) sang about in “New Sensations”; the kind is toasted with aioli and branded with you’d find at a roadside diner near the grill marks on top. It’s all very throwback Delaware Gap; a burger with greasy buns, America and it’s all very gratifying. I had the back patio at Henry’s Depot nuclear-yellow cheese and a patty crisped around the edges and flat as a pancake. My all to myself one late afternoon, and enjoyed the burger favorite is the one there along with ol’ Bill Elwell, the a side of thick-cut crusty 93-year-old WHAT THE CHUCK fries ($2.50) and a proprietor of Bill’s 212 W. First St., Sanford root beer. ($3) All Burgers, makes 407-548-6931 I could think of at his Van Nuys, wtcsanford.com while eating those California, burger $$ fries was how much stand — no fuss, better they’d be no frills, just the slathered in a dark poster burger of burgerdom. Nat Russell, the gifted chef beef gravy along with some cheese curds. of Sanford’s Tennessee Truffle, is no Bill C’mon, there’s nothing wrong infusing a Elwell, but he does pay homage to flat- bit of Canadiana with this all-American top burger classicism at What the Chuck, burger, is there? WTC’s other smashburger, the “Classic” his stall inside Sanford food hall Henry’s ($10), fancies it up a bit with Grafton Depot. I refer specifically to the “1960’s Smash Village sharp cheddar, sweet and sour Burger” ($9) – the patty, an 80/20 mix pickles, and whole-grain Dijonnaise musof chuck and sirloin ground on premises, tard. Those pickles, by the way, can be
ordered as a side for $1 more. I’d make the splurge. Despite all my grousing against the pub-style burger in the opening lines of this review, I will say Russell crafts some impressive contemporary renditions. The towering “Tennessee Truffle” ($12), named after his restaurant across the street, doesn’t feature any of the namesake pickled ramps, but the addition of smoked kale, crunchy charred scallions and “cowboy candy” pimento cheese (it’s got candied jalapeños) is a beefy ode to the South. Then there’s the “Celery City” ($13), named in honor of the city of Sanford and its celery farms. Its flavors, however, are more Byblos than Bokey, with marinated feta and mint mixed with pickled celery slaw and green apple. Really, whether your tastes veer toward the classic or the modern, What the Chuck adds quality burgers to Henry’s Depot, and Sean Kelley, owner/operator of this railroad-station-turned-food-hall, deserves credit for the vendor curation. Now, if they could just get on the gravy train ….
NEWS + EVENTS Some patio-friendly news to impart: Luke’s Kitchen in Maitland has installed a retractable awning on their patio, and the Ravenous Pig has installed heaters in their recently opened beer garden … Speaking of, the Pig will host a pig roast and movie night in said beer garden Tuesday and Wednesday, Dec. 15 and 16. Dinner will be served between 5-6:30 p.m. with the movie, Elf starring Will Ferrell, starting at 6:30 p.m. Cost is $35. Visit theravenouspig.com for tickets … Knife & Spoon, the new steakhouse fronted by Top Chefs John Tesar and Gerald Sombright, will offer a to-go Christmas meal serving four to six people for $450 highlighted by a 60-day aged prime rib. Add $75 for winter black truffles. Orders must be placed before Dec. 22 and picked up at the Ritz-Carlton Grande Lakes between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Christmas Day. Call 407-393-4034 to order. SHOP LOCAL As the holiday shopping season hits high gear, we implore you to buy from local businesses in this, the toughest year small business has faced since the Depression. As Dan Price, business owner and income inequality activist, tweeted recently, “The founders of Amazon and Walmart have gotten $133 billion richer ... Meanwhile, 20% of all small businesses have closed forever. For holiday shopping, may I suggest A) shop local B) buy sooner rather than later.” As well as helping out the community economic ecosystem, another thing you can do to ease the strain of consumerism on the environment is to buy used or vintage. Follow social media for the below local businesses and makers to learn about in-person appearances at pop-ups and markets for online merchants and online ordering from brick-and-mortar shops. And finally, we’d be remiss not to mention our own Orlando Weekly Press Club (orlandoweekly.com/support), where you can donate in your own or another’s name to help support our 30-year legacy of providing free, uncensored news coverage to all in Orlando.

RUSSELL’S ON LAKE IVANHOE
Russell’s on Lake Ivanhoe has already positioned itself as the best restaurant in 32804. Chef Emmanuel Clement’s flawless creations include his “royale with cheese” burger (one of the best in the city) to the crispy duck confit. A “Napoleon” of roasted beets and burrata shows his technical skills, while the barrelfish seasoned with ginger, cumin and a hint of curry shows he can be bold without being heavyhanded. Trying the pineapple old-fashioned and pineapple Foster is a must. (reviewed Dec. 2) 1414 N. Orange Ave., 407-601-3508, russellsorlando.com, $$$$
AJI CEVICHE BAR
Aji’s Casselberry locale is a bright, spirited space much like the restaurant’s specialty ceviches, of which there are many. Aji spotlights the global influence of Peruvian cuisine as well with such fried rice dishes as chaufa and aeropuerto, Japanese-influenced tiradito and sushi rolls, and filling risottos with lomo saltado. Fresh juices served in half-liter carafes are an absolute must, as are endings of lucuma mousse and luscious suspiro a la limeña. (reviewed Nov. 25) 1436 N. Semoran Blvd., Casselberry, 407-673-0237, ajicevichebarorlando.com, $$$
ANTICA PIZZERIA & MOZZARELLA BAR
You won’t find better Neapolitan pizzas in the city than the ones served at this familyrun outfit in Altamonte Springs. Housemade pastas include seasonal creations like a tomato-free lasagna made with pumpkin cream, mushrooms, mozzarella and sausage (reviewed Nov. 11) 249 W. State Highway 436, Altamonte Springs, 407-834-7770, antica-pizzeria.com, $$
BAO’S CASTLE
With a menu developed by Danny Nguyen of Kabooki Sushi Sand Lake, Bao’s Castle serves baos of the utmost distinction. Of note is the very photo-worthy “Sidestepper,” combining the crunch of fried soft-shell crab with the hellfire of honey sriracha and spicy apple kimchi. “Baoser’s Buddy” holds an incredibly flavorful chunk of Korean short rib, plus kimchi and scallion strings. A late-night happy hour runs from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. Open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. (reviewed Nov. 4) 45 W. Crystal Lake St., 407-704-3041, baoscastle.com, $ n

Rose Island premieres Wednesday on Netflix
ON (small) SCREENS IN ORLANDO
Streaming premieres you won’t want to miss by Steve Schneider PREMIERES WEDNESDAY: Rose Island – True events inspired this comedy-drama about an engineer who establishes his own nation-state off the coast of Italy in the late 1960s. Yes, the phrase “That’s not real Italian” predates the founding of Olive Garden by over a decade! (Netflix) The Surgeon’s Cut – Documentary cameras follow four medical visionaries whose work puts them at the vanguard of surgical technique. Remember when that was the first thing we associated with Ben Carson, instead of expensive office furniture and delusional psychosis? (Netflix) The Trial of Christine Keeler – A six-episode series about the controversial dolly bird who almost brought down the British government in the 1960s. In other words, she was to Monica Lewinsky what the Rolling Stones were to Buckcherry. (HBO Max)
PREMIERES THURSDAY: Alice in Borderland – In this manga turned anime turned live-action series, a group of teenagers fight for their lives in a desolate alternate Tokyo. So, Disney Springs, then? (Netflix)
House of Ho – Inspired by Crazy Rich Asians, this reality series about a powerful Vietnamese-American family was supposed to drop last July. Damn, I’m not used to stuff that concerns Vietnam turning out differently than everybody expected. (HBO Max) Let Them All Talk – Steven Soderbergh directs Meryl Streep as an author who finds self-awareness while on vacation. Streep was allegedly paid 25 cents for her work – which my late uncle would have said was still too high. He was a pistol! (HBO Max)
PREMIERES FRIDAY: Adult Material – A mother of three who’s also a porn actress is the central character of a four-part British export. In other words, she’s to Octomom what Christine Keeler was to … I wanna say Buckcherry again. (HBO Max) Giving Voice – Follow student hopefuls from around the country as they attempt to land a Broadway gig by reciting monologues by the great August Wilson. Swing for the Fences, kids! (Shut up, white man.) (Netflix) I’m Your Woman – Oh my God, somebody turned Sandra Bernhard’s debut album into
a movie? No, relax; it’s just a crime drama about a wife and mother who has to go on the lam from the mob. Which still sounds like more fun than listening to Sandra Bernhard. (Amazon Prime) The Prom – Every drama queen on your friends list is worried that Ryan Murphy is going to overdo his adaptation of the Tonynominated 2018 musical. And that’s totally the way I want to remember Ryan Murphy: Even people who were into musical theater thought he was a lot. (Netflix) The Wilds Season 1 – It’s Lost meets Mean Girls as a bunch of teenagers are stranded on a deserted island. From what I understand of teens these days, they have a very different definition of “smoke monster.” (Amazon Prime)
PREMIERES MONDAY: Tiny Pretty Things – The series adaptation of Dhonielle Clayton and Sona Charaipotra’s novel about an elite ballet academy promises plenty of sex and suspense. Listen, you know what ballerinas really run on? Lara Bars and self-loathing. But that tends to run thin at about Episode 3. Enjoy! (Netflix) orlandoweekly.com

BY B AO L E - H U U GRAVE RETURN | PHOTO BY TREVOR HALL
Orlando’s Grave Return, a band
whose bloodline runs rich with homegrown punk royalty, have never been accused of being prolific. That’s why the release of their first new music in three years this week is pretty momentous. On Friday, Dec. 11, they’ll drop their driving new EP Victory Or … on Ashtray Monument, the Tampa record label that’s also a lovingly dedicated archivist of historical Florida rock music. Digital purchase includes a bonus track and the vinyl edition is super limited to a precious 35 copies, so maybe pounce on these at ashtray-monument. square.site.
MARC WITH A C’S QUARANSTREAM 8
Not even a dang pandemic can stop Orlando’s Marc With a C. Even from lockdown, the indie-pop pied piper has spent the year marking his 20th anniversary in art with the release of a box set, a film and a book. Oh, and dude’s already got his next album — Low Fidelity (or “How I Spent the Nervous Breakdown”) — in the can for a Jan. 15 release. Through it all, he’s continued to perform regularly through his online “QuaranStreams.” Proof that personal connection is still possible in these times, the next upcoming episode will feature a special fan-curated setlist. At 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 13, tune in to twitch.tv/marcwithac music to see if he picked your setlist.
CONCERT PICKS THIS WEEK
Jason Isbell and Amanda Shires: Remember when big-name national acts came to town on the reg? Well, this bill featuring the powerhouse Americana couple
Grave Return, a local outfit rich in homegrown punk royalty, are poised to release their first new music in three years of Isbell and Shires is probably the closest semblance of those less contagious times seen here in a long-ass while. It’s part of the Dr. Phillips Center’s outdoor, thoughtfully spaced Frontyard Festival series, and it’s the undisputed crown jewel of the lineup so far. The venue recently announced that it’s now making smaller two- and threeperson boxes available at some shows, and this is one of them. (8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 10, Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, $55-$175) Hannah Harber & Friends: Whether it’s on her own or with friends like she’s done at the Circle, local Americana star Hannah Harber is one of the city’s leading young voices right now and always brings the tasteful twang live. This weekend, she takes over the Will’s Pub patio for a twonight stand outdoors. (7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 11, and 10 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 12, Dirty Laundry, tables $20-$40) Cortez and Friends: Now that it’s reopened, the Blue Bamboo’s show calendar has started to get back up to speed with a diverse roster. But there’s probably nothing that quite captures the heart of this special place than when venue honcho and accomplished jazz guitarist Chris Cortez comes out from behind the
curtain and scenes to take the limelight himself. Accompanied this time by Ed Krout (piano), Chuck Archard (bass) and Paul Parker (drums), this show is a free livestream on the venue’s YouTube channel. (8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 11, Blue Bamboo Center for the Arts, free) Distant Stations, Stucco and Dot Org: The art-forward independent venue Henao Contemporary Center is the latest to respond to this situation of ours with safer facilities. Self-dubbed a “sound garden” and thankfully not the Soundgarden, the newly built accommodations allow outdoors events, and this intriguingly motley local indie-rock bill is a solid, early and free chance to check out the new digs. (7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 12, Henao Contemporary Center, free) The Christmas Box Social: While the government at large has been a dud about helping artists crushed by the pandemic, the homegrown Greater Orlando Performing Arts Relief was formed over the summer to help provide local, on-the-ground and immediate aid to our sizable community of performers. This downtown holiday benefit concert, by artists for artists, has been organized to help GOPAR in its noble and needed mission. The lineup features Andrea Halperin, Lea Marinelli, Melissa Minyard, DaVonda Simmons, Preston Ellis, Nathan Meyer, Zach Nadolski and the delightful Carol Stein. The distanced, outdoor show is a pay-what-you-can event with restricted capacity. Make reservations with an email to christmasboxsocial@ gmail.com. Enjoy yourself and make a difference. (4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 13, 54 Church St., pay what you can) baolehuu@orlandoweekly.com orlandoweekly.com

“CASSEROLE”
Q: Something is bothering me, and I don’t know where else to turn. I’m a bisexual man. I’ve been married to a great guy for the past six years. Despite COVID we gathered safely for an outdoors Thanksgiving dinner with my family. My mom, my brother and sisterin-law, and my adult nieces and nephews and their partners were there. Each household contributed to the feast and we had a wonderful evening. While my husband and I were snuggling in bed later he said that my casserole was a big hit thanks to the “secret ingredient.” When I asked what he meant, he informed me that he had deposited my come from a blowjob he’d given me earlier that day in my half-finished casserole. When I asked why he did this, he said he thought it was hot and he was aroused watching my family ingest it. To me, this seems a bit twisted and feels like a deeply disrespectful act toward my family. Now I cannot sleep and it is impossible for me to think of anything else. I wish he had never told me. I am writing to you as I don’t know where else to turn. Confused And Shuddering Sleeplessly Entirely Revolted Over Loaded Entrée Some letters you suspect are fake, some letters you know are fake, and some letters you hope are fake. I wish I could say this letter fell into the second category — a letter I knew to be fake — but I once got a letter from a man who would excuse himself at dinner parties, quickly rub one out in the bathroom, and then dip the bristles of his hosts’ toothbrushes in his semen. (That was 20 years ago and I still secure my toothbrush in a secret, undisclosed location whenever we have company.) So as much as I wish we lived in a world where something like this could never happen, CASSEROLE, we sadly don’t live in that world. That said … some details don’t add up. I’ve been in the receiving end of plenty of blowjobs in my time, CASSEROLE, and there are tells when a guy doesn’t swallow. A man who’s holding your load in his mouth has a certain look; his mouth and jaw are set in a particular and revealing way. There’s also no post-blowjob kissing or snuggling. And if you were to say, “Thank you, that was great,” and they hummed back, “Mmmhmm,” instead of saying, “You’re welcome,” you would immediately know the guy didn’t swallow. And yet you would have us believe that your husband somehow gave you a blowjob and somehow didn’t swallow your load without you noticing and then … what? He strolled around the house with a mouth full of come until the opportunity to defile your casserole presented itself?
36
Then again … impromptu blowjobs sometimes happen, CASSEROLE, and they sometimes happen in kitchens. So I suppose it’s possible your husband interrupted you while you were making a casserole and then quickly leaned over and spat your load into your casserole and managed to give it quick stir … without you noticing the spit or the stir? Sounds improbable… but I suppose your husband could have created a diversion that took your attention off him and that mouthful of come and your casserole long enough to execute the spit-and-stir maneuver undetected. Perhaps he pointed at something outside the window or tossed a flash-bang grenade into the dining room. But even if he did all of this — blew you, didn’t swallow, created a diversion, spat your semen into a casserole you planned to share with your entire family — would he tell you about it? The guy who was glazing his friends’ toothbrushes didn’t brag to his friends about it. He wrote to me about it, described it as a compulsion, and asked me how to stop. That your husband would be so clueless as to think you wouldn’t be revolted and upset by this is, if you’ll forgive me, a little hard to swallow. Still … your nieces and nephews are adults … so it’s possible you and your husband are getting up there in years … and he could be suffering from early-onset dementia; inappropriate sexual behavior and poor impulse control can be early symptoms. So on the off, off, off chance this actually happened, CASSEROLE, here’s my advice: If your husband spat your load into a halffinished casserole and then watched your whole family consume it and then assumed you would think it was hot, CASSEROLE, then you absolutely, positively need to divorce him. Unless you looked into his eyes on your wedding day and thought, “This is a guy who would feed a woman her own son’s semen and I’m fine with that,” your husband isn’t the “great guy” you thought he was. He’s a monster and what he did unforgivable, even criminal. Divorce the asserole. You might want to consider calling the cops and pressing charges for sexual assault — here’s hoping you saved some of the casserole for DNA testing — but you’ll have to weigh involving the police against burdening your mother with the knowledge of your Thanksgiving casserole’s secret ingredient. Q: Forgive my English. I write from Italy. I’m a quarter of a century old and I have been with my girlfriend for seven years. I can’t tell you how long the “sex high” lasted — the time when she wanted to have sex as
ORLANDO WEEKLY ● DEC. 9-15, 2020 ● orlandoweekly.com
often as possible — but it was maybe three years. Now if she’s stressed, if we are not in a bed, if she hasn’t just shaved her legs, if she’s just woke up, if she’s nervous for any reason at all, she doesn’t want to have sex. I’m not one of those men who thinks exclusively about his own pleasure. I have asked her if she has any fantasies. She does not. I have asked her if I should be doing anything different. She says not. She doesn’t masturbate, she doesn’t watch porn. I purchased a sex toy for us. She will not touch it. And when I try to talk to her, she says that her sexuality is none of my business. I am miserable. I don’t know what to do. She says I am “fixated on sex” and that there is more to life than that. I jerk off a lot, of course, which she only just started to accept. At first she considered it equivalent to cheating. Is it wrong to end a relationship of seven years because of a matter of different views on sex? I love her so much and leaving would be hard. Please help me. Who Has Yearnings Forgive my bluntness: Either your girlfriend never liked sex all that much or, after seven years, she’s no longer excited by sex with you. If she were willing to talk about it, WHY, you might be able to do something about it; you might be able to revive your sex life by trying new things together, experimenting with toys, having adventures. But she’s made it clear she’s not interested in discussing things, much less doing things. And while she doesn’t think her sexuality is any of your business, she clearly sees your sexuality as her business, e.g. until recently she thought you were cheating on her when you jerked off … which is kind of nuts, considering how infrequently she wants to fuck you. There’s nothing wrong with ending a sexually exclusive relationship when the sex doesn’t work and your partner couldn’t care less that you’re unhappy and only grudgingly allows you to masturbate. As much as you love her, it’s not working and it’s only going to get worse. You’re at once every two weeks now and will soon be down to once a month, then once every three months, then once a year. Eventually you’ll cheat on her out of sheer desperation and the breakup won’t just be painful, WHY, it will be messy and painful and you’ll be cast as the bad guy. Don’t wait for your dick to slam itself down on the self-destruct button. End it now. P.S. Your English is so much better than my Italian! mail@savagelove.net
