IN MEMORIAM: THE ORLANDO 49 Every week between now and the one-year anniversary of the Pulse Nightclub shootings, Orlando Weekly will profile a person killed on June 12, 2016. This week: Rodolfo Ayala Ayala

Rodolfo Ayala Ayala was quiet and polite until you got to know him, says his friend Aileen Carrillo.

After going on a cruise with Ayala and a group of friends to Mexico, Carrillo learned he was a funny person who liked to tell jokes and make her laugh. The 33-year-old Puerto Rican native (often seen wearing a bowtie) was always positive, to the extent that he had a hard time listening to his friends complaining.

“He was extremely happy,” she says. “He didn’t give importance to negative things. Life is hard, and the moments of happiness are few, so he lived it up.”

In his spare time, Carrillo says, Ayala liked to bake cheesecakes for his loved ones at his new Kissimmee home and dance to bachata,

especially songs from Romeo Santos and Héctor “El Torito” Acosta. But Ayala also worked a serious job as a platelet supervisor in Orlando’s OneBlood laboratory, where he was passionate about saving lives.

On June 12, Ayala and a group of friends, including Carrillo’s brother Simon, were celebrating at the gay nightclub Pulse. Ayala, Simon Carrillo and the majority of their friends died that morning in a mass shooting.

After his death, his co-workers at OneBlood mourned “Rody” as they tried to deal with long lines of people who stood in the hot sun to donate blood for the surviving victims of Pulse. His friend Juliana Santos said in a press conference days after Ayala’s death that she couldn’t believe what was happening.

“I want you all to know that Rody was such a beautiful, humble, great person,” Santos says. “He was such a hard worker. He was always motivating us. He was the best.”

Carrillo says their last messages on June 12 were about their favorite bachata song, “Muchachita Linda” by Juan Luis Guerra.

Ayala told her they needed to go out and try new things.

“He told me he missed me, he loved me and that he was here at Pulse,” she says. “He was a loyal, beautiful person. I’m so grateful I was his friend and that we got to say goodbye.”

Orange County commissioners approve $75,000 grant to Mad Cow: After the grant was initially deferred in the wake of allegations by several artists on social media regarding the professional theater group’s delinquent payments, commissioners approved the grant last week. It came with several conditions, though – including a requirement for Mad Cow President Brian McDowell to certify that all fees, commissions, compensation and salary due to artists, staff and technical support was paid on or before Dec. 1.

OneOrlando Fund paid $27 million to Pulse families and survivors: The OneOrlando Fund has distributed $27.4 million to the survivors and families of the 49 victims killed at the gay nightclub Pulse. The city of Orlando announced that so far, they’ve paid out funds to 299 of 305 claims. OneOrlando plans to disburse $29.5 million in total.

County cops lead state in juvenile arrests, despite increase in citations: Orange County law enforcement officials say they have increased the use of civil citations given to juvenile offenders who would have otherwise been arrested, but the county is still leading the state in the number of juveniles charged with a crime.

A civil citation is an alternative method of charging juveniles with non-serious misdemeanor offenses, such as fighting at school or petty theft. This fiscal year (2015-2016), 34 percent of kids got a civil citation instead of being arrested, up from 17 percent last year. But Orange County is behind other more populous areas this fiscal year, such as: Miami-Dade County, which gave citations to 91 percent of eligible juveniles and Broward County, which gave citations to 68 percent of eligible juveniles. Orange County also topped those areas, and the rest of the state, with 6,547 juvenile arrests for all offenses, including felonies, in 2015-2016.

COUNTING THE COSTS Pulse owners decide not to sell nightclub to Orlando as city leaders debate the asking price

A

s the six-month anniversary of the Pulse massacre approaches, the owners of the gay nightclub have decided not to sell the site to the city of Orlando. City officials had been grappling with the purchase of the place where 49 people met their end and a community continues to grieve.

In a statement released on Monday, Pulse owner Barbara Poma says she can’t walk away from a space that means so much to her family and community.

“I feel a personal obligation to ensure that a permanent space at Pulse be created so that all generations to come will remember those affected by, and taken on, June 12,” she says. “I intend to create a space for everyone, a sanctuary of hope, and a welcoming area to remember all those affected by the tragedy. I plan to do that directly with the involvement of the communities impacted by this tragedy, the families of the victims, and any private or public sector individuals or organizations who wish to assist.”

Poma adds that the memorial must be created together as a community.

“I hope the love and support we have seen through this time from around the world and here at home will continue as

we join together to build a place to memorialize our Angels,” she says.

Earlier in November, the city announced staff had worked out an agreement with the owners of Pulse to purchase the site on Orange Avenue for $2.25 million, with the plan to eventually create a memorial to the people killed in the mass shooting this past summer. But at the Orlando City Council meeting on Nov. 14, Mayor Buddy Dyer delayed a vote from Orlando commissioners on the purchase because of resistance from some on the council regarding the price. City records show the 4,500-square-foot building on a third-ofan-acre parcel had been independently appraised by the city before the tragedy and valued at $1.68 million. That’s about a $570,000 difference.

At an awkward meeting with Dyer last week at City Hall, Commissioner Tony Ortiz cited that difference as his only reason for opposing the purchase.

“I don’t have a problem with us getting the property,” he said in measured tones.

“I never said that I was against that. I do have an ethical and moral problem, and many people have expressed the same, in terms of the price. Why is this guy trying to capitalize on this?”

owners was closer to $4 million, which city staff had negotiated to lower considerably, Ortiz acknowledged.

“I definitely understand where you’re coming from,” Ortiz said. “But I can’t fathom the idea of allowing somebody to capitalize on this. Especially knowing the suffering and knowing the sacrifice of many of the families. If you give me a true reason why the price has to be like that, I’ll be more than glad to consider it – but there’s not.”

Dyer countered by saying the purchase of the site would allow the city to control the memorial process so it isn’t outside the bounds of what ought to be done for the community. The city’s process would probably involve public input, while an outside entity might not have the same consideration.

“I don’t view it as a real estate transaction,” Dyer said. “I think we might have not kept commissioners in as much of the loop as we went through the process of negotiating the purchase of the [site] but I can tell you we got what we think is the best possible deal that we could.”

The terse discussion ended with Ortiz saying he couldn’t come to terms with the price and would have preferred to work with the community to raise funds for the purchase.

“Commissioner, in 10 years, the amount we paid for the land will be long forgotten,” Dyer responded. “The tragedy won’t be forgotten, but the price we paid will.”

Commissioner Patty Sheehan, the city’s first openly gay commissioner, said last week that city commissioners have never had a problem paying above value for parts of the Amway Center, so she doesn’t see why they had a problem with Pulse.

“The price has come down substantially,” she said. “The owners have also

suffered – employee losses, business losses. They haven’t been able to run for six months. I feel we need to make them whole.”

Sheehan attributes the resistance to prejudice.

“They’re still stuck in the ’90s when discrimination against gay people was a good thing to do,” she said. “There are several other instances, most of them involving the venues, where we’ve paid above the price. Now all of a sudden it’s an issue, when we’ve never had a problem before? I don’t buy that logic.”

After Dyer first pulled the item from the council meeting in November, Sheehan says people called and offered donations for the purchase of the club. The commissioner says she offered to start a fundraiser, but Dyer’s office told her not to worry about the money. Sheehan says Dyer also told her that he had enough votes on the council to push the purchase through in December.

But after the news broke that Pulse’s owners would not sell the club to the city, Dyer says in a statement that he understands the decision by the owners was “incredibly difficult.”

“We respect their decision and are hopeful the Pulse site will continue to be a place of hope and healing that honors the victims,” Dyer says. “We believe it is important for the community to have input into a memorial that honors the victims and pays tribute to the resiliency of Orlando. City staff will continue to research and understand how other communities have approached the memorial process. As we better understand that process, and after engaging with our commissioners and community partners, we’ll update the community on the next steps.” mcordeiro@orlandoweekly.com

TELLING TALES The visceral appeal of traditional Southern art

outhern art breaks the art world’s preconception of the preciousness of an object, as viewers immediately understand that conceptualism and minimalism are out. The Southern art currently exhibited by Crealdé in two locations is visceral and textured – sensual, even. At the main Crealdé campus just off Aloma and in the Hannibal Square Heritage Center, the art is only there to look at, but don’t be surprised if you come away wishing you could touch it.

Twenty artists from 10 Southern states,

from North Carolina to Louisiana, participated in the Spinning Yarn: Storytelling Through Southern Art exhibit. At Hannibal Square, Joe Tsambras’ black-and-white etchings “Children of Alice 1 and 2” are flat, yet have depth in their fine surfaces.

This playground is full of somber children who aren’t playing due to dark, Dalí-esque interventions – legs converted into table leg parts, long poles penetrating eye sockets.

These kids are not having fun.

Jon Eric Riis is a tapestry artist from Atlanta with an international reputation,

and his bias-tape compositions are woven pieces softens their message, but makes with horsehair and metallic thread, bris- them no less powerful.

In one corner stands Darryl Montana’s tling with energy and color.

Few things melt my frosty heart

faster than the cartoon creations of Charles Schulz, so it was an especially welcome early holiday present to be invited to this year’s media preview of Christmas at Gaylord Palms and ICE!, featuring A Charlie Brown Christmas. The original animated television special, with its iconic Vince Guaraldi musical score, is one of my fondest childhood favorites, and the skilled ice carvers Gaylord Palms imports from Harbin, China, for their annual event have outdone themselves in sculpting Snoopy and the gang, crafting a tribute that Schulz’s descendants (some of whom were in attendance at the opening) should be proud of.

The effort involved in chilling a room (in Florida, no less) to 9 degrees Fahrenheit and filling it with 2 million pounds of hand-carved H20 is always impressive, but the last two ICE! exhibits, themed around ’Twas the Night Before Christmas and The Nutcracker, didn’t really ignite my imagination. On the contrary, this year’s larger-than-life dioramas – including Snoopy’s crawl-through doghouse, Lucy’s psychiatry stand and Linus reciting the Nativity story – were so cool that I wanted to linger long after I lost feeling in my fingers. I even took a ride down the ice slide (set in the center of the story’s climactic Christmas pageant) despite having sworn off it years ago, and survived with minimal frostbite.

While I happily give two numbed thumbs up to Gaylord’s Charlie Brown ice sculptures, this year’s live seasonal entertainment is again a mixed bag. A Christmas Wish is a new LED light display on the Emerald Plaza atrium’s imposing 60-foottall tree synced to classic holiday music.

At only six minutes long, it won’t make anyone forget Disney’s defunct Osborne Family Spectacle, but the show is well worth the price of admission: It’s completely free.

If you love Charlie Brown like I do, ICE! is this season’s must-see attraction – but it’s not cheap Gaylord Palms’ headliner holiday show is a reprise of Cirque Dreams: UnWrapped, which debuted last year.

I’ve seen several Cirque Dreams shows, from Busch Gardens Tampa to Broadway, and as in all their productions, this show’s rotating cast of jugglers, contortionists and acrobats from around the world is firstrate. This year’s aerial acts are enhanced by a higher flying apparatus, allowing for some truly heart-stopping maneuvers. But what keeps Cirque Dreams from achieving the same renown as a similarly named circus troupe installed at Downtown Disney is not their performers’ skills, but their directorial decisions.

Exhibit A: Despite being explicitly marketed as a more family-friendly replacement for Gaylord’s former Luminescence rock concert, last year’s Unwrapped was among the most flamboyant things I’ve ever seen outside a Parliament House drag revue. While some of the more suggestive use of phallic props was toned town this season, there’s still an inexplicably pantsless snowman cavorting around the candy-colored stage, a leering ringmaster who recruits audience members for an interminable musical segment, and a curious amount of innuendo-laden choreography for a Christmas show.

In spite of the aesthetic confusion, Unwrapped draws large crowds, which have only partially been alleviated by an expanded viewing area. While some seats are offered free on a first-come, first-served

basis, they fill up fast. That pushes guests to pay $15-$17 for upgraded viewing, but even from the VIP seats our sightlines were semi-obstructed. I’d advise saving your money instead for one of the many other extras Gaylord Palms offers, such as an Elf on the Shelf scavenger hunt ($10), Charlie Brown character breakfast ($33) or gingerbread decorating class ($23-$30). I really enjoyed Mrs. Claus’ Christmas Traditions show, where we sat on beanbag chairs as Santa’s better half and her humorously ham-handed helper led the audience through interactive seasonal stories and sing-alongs. The warm chocolate-chip cookies were a wonderful touch, though for $15 I wish there had been an adult alternative to the T.G. Lee-provided beverages.

That’s the problem with Christmas at Gaylord Palms; like a lusted-after toy that you open on Christmas morning only to discover it demands an endless supply of expensive accessories, it’s all too easy to find your wallet drained by all the holiday cheer. If you start with the basic $30 adult entry to ICE! ($3 cheaper for Florida residents with an online code), then pay another $20 for Alpine tubing down a manufactured snow mountain and another $10 to throw a bucket of snowballs – insanely overpriced, but both a blast if you didn’t grow up in a cold climate – pretty soon you’ll need a $16 cocktail flight from the ice bar as you add up the damage.

Combo tickets and play-all-day passes are a better value at $46 to $75 dollars, but even they don’t include all the extras. By that point you’re approaching the price of a ticket to the Magic Kingdom’s Christmas party, which includes many more entertainment offerings for your buck.

If you love Charlie Brown like I do, ICE! is this season’s must-see attraction, but beware the bottom line or you’ll feel like Lucy yanked away your football. skubersky@orlandoweekly.com orlandoweekly.com

Happenings on Fairbanks: The Ravenous Pig has reopened in the former Cask & Larder space … Some amazing murals by renowned Oaxacan street art collective Lapiztola have gone up on the facade and interior of Hunger Street Tacos in the former BB Junction/4 Rivers space. Look for the taqueria to open by late December or early January … You’ll recall Paco’s Mexican Restaurant closed after 35 years back in October, but the owners are planning now to try serving their comestibles from a mobile conveyance.

Look for the Paco’s food truck to roll early in the new year.

Coffee talk: Vita Luna Cafe left the District @ Mills50 last month, but has since moved into Lil Indies on the other side of Mills; the cafe will serve local organic craft coffee, tea and snacks from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. seven days a week.

And Foxtail Coffee Co. has opened next to Create Your Nature in the State Auto Body building in Winter Park.

Stefano LaCommare (Stefano’s Trattoria, Il Pescatore) is coming out of retirement to open Nonno’s Ristorante Italiano at 1140 E. Altamonte Drive.

TONIGHT’S SPECIAL: THE SAZERAC The Sazerac was initially served as a medicinal toddy in Antoine Amédée Peychaud’s renowned New Orleans dispensary, but world-famous bartender Harry Craddock tweaked Peychaud’s recipe to create one of America’s first cocktails. The drink’s Sazerac-branded French cognac was swapped for rye whisky by the 1870s after phylloxera decimated French vineyards. Any number of liqueurs were subbed in for absinthe after a nationwide ban in 1912, but that distinctive ingredient returned to American bars – and Sazeracs – in 2007.

TONIGHT’S SPECIAL: THE TOM COLLINS Whiskey’s at a premium (see: goddamned illegal) thanks to 1919’s fun-sucking Volstead Act. Enter the Tom Collins, which, like other gin-based cocktails, became the drink du jour for the flappers and dapper gents of the Roaring ’20s. Proto-mixologist Jerry Thomas may have concocted his famous drink in 1876, but the Tom Collins’ heavy pour of lemon juice and sugar was perfect for drowning out the flavor of Prohibition’s most notorious nuisance: putrid bathtub gin.

3 parts Old Tom gin 2 parts freshly squeezed lemon juice 1 part sugar syrup 4 parts carbonated water to taste

Although pioneered (again) by Jerry Thomas and popularized by others from the 1920s on, the Martini staked its place in American cocktail culture in Madison Avenue’s boardrooms and bars, filled with grim American men back from World War II who counted on a belt or three to get through the day. And that’s a gin Martini, if you please – vodka was still spiritus non grata in the ’50s, as was its Russian birthplace. Just like the era’s toxic beauty standards and gridlocked gender politics, the cold-cock punch of the classic Martini has stood the test of time.

Similarly, the fern bars where singles culture first took root (heh) were overtaken by discos and swank drinkers like Maxwell’s Plum and T.G.I. Friday’s. Taken for granted today as the de facto night out destination for wolf packs and bachelorette parties, believe it or not, T.G.I. Friday’s changed where and how young Americans drink. To this day, Friday’s bartending training course remains the service industry’s gold standard.

Beach opened his – and our – first tiki bar, the eponymous Don the Beachcomber, in 1933, but in the late ’50s and early ’60s, as American society chafed at those constrictive suits and ran away to the beach to surf with Frankie and Annette, Beach’s tropical rum-based drinks helped break gin and whiskey’s stranglehold on mixology, at least for a little while.

CARRIE BRADSHAW’S AMERICA (1990S TO MID-2000S) TONIGHT’S SPECIAL: THE COSMOPOLITAN For one pink, shining moment, the Cosmo was as ubiquitous as flip phones, frosted highlights and HBO’s Sex and the City.

Sloshing over the sides of a comically oversized Martini glass, it was the perfect cocktail for the 1990s’ New American Optimism: syrupy-sweet, deceptively smooth and not at all indicative of the hangover to come. Cocktail aficionados might deride the Cosmo as one-dimensional, but there’s no denying the drink’s zeitgeisti-ness and its place in pop – and cocktail – culture.

TONIGHT’S SPECIAL: THE CORPSE REVIVER NO. 2 What’s old – like, 1870s old – is new again, thanks to the late 2000s’ craft cocktail renaissance. Craft cocktail bars like Milk & Honey, Death & Co., PDT and Employees Only revered the recipes of Harry Craddock and Jerry Thomas, giving them new life.

Craddock gets a second mention in this article with his Corpse Reviver No. 2, a gin-based cocktail served for its “medicinal” properties (that is, as a hangover cure … yeah, you’re the corpse).

After a couple decades’ exile, rye whiskey and gin stormed back into America’s liquor cabinets as mixologists reinvented and endlessly tweaked American classics to new levels of perfection.

FISH HOUSE PUNCH D

uring the holiday season, we always think of punch. There’s no better signal of hospitality than the flowing bowl, nor is there a better system for making sure one’s hosting duties don’t keep one stuck behind the counter measuring and mixing individual cocktails for guests.

This month’s Remix looks at a most venerable American drink: Philadelphia Fish House Punch. An 1881 New York Times article notes that the Schuylkill Fishing Club – a gentlemen’s club devoted to fishing, smoking, and other manly pursuits – was formed in 1732. The earliest known reference to the club’s lethal namesake beverage is in a letter sent in 1744, though by 1885, the effects of Fish House Punch were known widely enough to inspire this little bit of doggerel, published in a weekly magazine called The Cook: “There’s a little place just out of town, Where, if you go to lunch, They’ll make you forget your mother-in-law With a drink called Fish-House Punch.”

The reason you’ll forget your motherin-law? This punch is ridiculously strong.

It’s all liquor with a bit of lemon juice and sugar; the only real dilution comes from the traditional 4-pound block of ice.

(Alternatively, the amount of sugar here may induce diabetic blindness, another reason you might not recognize your MIL.) If you, like me, do not own a vessel large enough to fit three gallons of punch and a 4-pound block of ice, and also are not at your holiday-party best after slugging a cup or two of straight liquor, this Remix is for you. I kept the lemon-and-sugar base and still used rum as the base spirit, but I swapped out some of the liquor for Earl Grey tea for a diluting element with its own unique bergamot aroma, and added some ginger to make the flavor profile more interesting.

Both recipes below are written to yield about a half-gallon, but punch is infinitely flexible. Substitute “part” for “pint” and use the recipes as proportional guidelines to make as much or as little as you like. jyoung@orlandoweekly.com

CLASSIC: • 1/3 pint lemon juice • 3/4 pound sugar 1 pint Jamaica rum • 1 pint cognac • 1 pint peach brandy • 1 pint water, frozen Combine the lemon juice and sugar in a large bowl and set aside until combined (a few hours). Place the ice in the bowl, then the rest of the ingredients, and stir to combine.

Garnish with lemon slices.

4 ounces fresh lemon juice 4 ounces simple syrup 1 pint Earl Grey tea, brewed 1 pint amber rum (not spiced) 8 ounces brandy 4 ounces Domaine Canton ginger brandy • 1 can of Barritt’s ginger beer • lemon slices • cloves (optional) First make a large chunk of ice by filling a Tupperware or the cut-off bottom of a milk carton with filtered water and freezing it overnight. Brew the tea and set aside to cool.

Combine the lemon juice and simple syrup in a large bowl, then add the ice. Add the tea, rum and brandy and stir to combine, then slowly pour in the ginger beer. Garnish with lemon slices (studded with whole cloves, if you like).

BY STE V E S C H N E I D E R Office Christmas Party Six years ago, when the writers of the original Hangover pitched their idea for Office Christmas Party, they envisioned it as another tale of morning-after regret, but centered on a corporate holiday blowout instead of a wedding. Two Hangover sequels and several female-centric versions later, that approach must have seemed passé, because the version of OCP that ultimately got made focuses on an office full of wildmen who have to exploit their Dionysian strengths to retain an important client. Stars Jennifer Aniston and Jason Bateman are reunited with Josh Gordon and Will Speck, their directors on 2010’s The Switch – which audiences and critics alike praised as not the worst thing in the world, and certainly not capable of giving one cancer. I don’t know, that doesn’t exactly scream “party” to me. But maybe it’s just because I work from home. (R)

Her locs were gone, and her tired face lay bare, save the tears that streamed down her cheeks. She ranted much of the performance, disavowing the spotlight she had once yearned for. “I had created this public persona, this public illusion, and it held me hostage. I couldn’t be a real person, because you’re too afraid of what your public will say. At that point, I had to do some dying,” she said on the album’s intro track.

The project was deemed a failure, and Hill was criticized harshly, with media outlets condemning her as “unhinged.” Her career deteriorated. Her lack of punctuality made headlines, if she even bothered to show. Now Ms. Hill is back with a bombastic show and a reputation to regain.

The ’90s redux has absolutely gripped this decade’s style, and no one in town has embodied that spirit with as much fun and fidelity as local indie-rock band the Pauses. For the past three years running, they’ve taken over Will’s Pub and transformed the venue into a wormhole back to one specific year of that era, beginning with 1994. This year, they’re up to 1996.

And for the first time ever, it was blown out to a two-night happening (Dec. 2-3).

As the event’s cornerstone, the Pauses play both nights but different sets. And like always, they tap a select choice of current local acts to help conjure past glory. Opening night featured Overdale, Expert Timing and DJ Prom Nite. The second featured Luscious Lisa, Fictions and DJ Smilin’ Dan. Unlike 1994, with which they began, 1996 was kind of a non-vintage year.

Musically, the term “alternative” had by then lost all meaning in rock. But the looks and sounds of the zeitgeist had lots of splash, so it makes for the kind of fun that happens when smart musicians combine a karaoke bar and a period costume party.

Actually, the Pauses’ year celebrations are much more than just music. The bands all perform covers from the era, but the theme extends throughout the entire bar and includes all sorts of pop-culture ephemera like toys, tech, games, memorabilia and imagery, including a Scream photo booth set with props and costumes.

Girls, the bar even stocked some Icehouse and Bud Ice for the occasion, two drink trends that hold an ignominious place in my misspent youth. And, yes, of course I ordered them both. If there’s one place that has this much sense of humor and commitment to theme, it’s Will’s Pub. Musically, it was popular nostalgia galore with songs from the likes of Beck and the Cardigans. But tucked among those were some inspired selections across the board, like the Pauses’ cover of Superdrag (“Sucked Out”), Expert Timing’s cover of Mazzy Star (“Fade Into You”) and Overdale’s cover of Jawbox (“Mirrorful”).

As the anchor, the Pauses sounded and looked the most practiced and complete with a full audiovisual extravaganza that included costumes and video projections with their signature crowd-engaging “Interact-O-Vision” action. But among all their excellent retro visuals, however, the most wicked stroke was playing a cheesy old Will’s Pub television commercial between songs.

There are parties and there are theme parties. But this annual Pauses event is

celebration by total immersion, and it’s become the best indie throwback tradition in the city.

However, nothing is ever traditional in the world of Illuminated Paths, the area’s weirdest music label. Its music roster is a seemingly endless menagerie of left-field transmissions and its shows are oddity in motion. Besides audio strangeness of all stripes, all of IP’s showcases benefit from the live-mixed video psychedelics of label boss Joshua Rogers.

Their latest showcase (Dec. 2, Uncle Lou’s) featured notable underground acts I’ve covered before like Ray Brazen, who is one of Orlando’s most iconic outsider visionaries, and Tampa’s Fjshwjfe, whom I recently experienced at the Eva O show back in October. But besides being transported to another dimension, by now I’ve come to expect an education out of an Illuminated Paths event as well. This one introduced me to Byson and PolyKarp, two relatively new but definitely underthe-radar Orlando artists.

Whether due to its newness or its aesthetic – I suspect both – vaporwave is a genre awash with indistinguishable acts.

What producer Byson brings to the game, however, is the structure and groove of hip-hop. For a nebulous niche that can be impressionistic to a fault, that’s a godsend.

And the results in his case are distinctive.

PolyKarp is even more of a party-starter with his warped, subterranean dance music that sounds like a video-game rave.

Even better, he jams it out like a low-tech wizard with a miniature rig that includes a Walkman and a touchscreen stylus.

On the surface, Thornton Park’s string of pricey salons and preppycasual bar-restos doesn’t present an obvious case for it being the gothiest neighborhood in town. But fans of dirgey synths, iced-out drum machines and funereal fashion will tell you that the Falcon’s Uberbahn nights are the place to see some of the best in coldwave, death disco, EBM or whatever other portmanteau of goth’s ongoing death-by-1,000-genres is hot right now. Two veteran Florida synth acts, Ars Phoenix and the Viirus, drop in for this week’s edition. Ars Phoenix are former veterans of the Gainesville scene who have become masters at creating dark, shimmering synthpop over a decadelong career. This show is a release party for their latest tape, which happens to be a split with the opener, the Viirus. Another Gainesville vet, the Viirus used to be a project geared toward the more abrasive side of experimental electronic noise, but that bent has become increasingly more pop-oriented and danceable. The end of the year is the perfect time for a respite from the typical bar scene. How often, might you ask, do we avert our eyes from the painfully underdressed (shorts at the bar?) and suspiciously inexperienced drinkers about town? The answer is too often. So often, in fact, that the Great Orlando Mixer has gathered quite a decent fanbase in the past few years. All that had to be promised was a nice venue and people who suited up to impress rather than depress. (Hors d’oeuvres for when that fourth drink hits don’t hurt, either.) Orlando Jazz Orchestra: Ellington’s Nutcracker MUSIC

We’re still a couple of weeks away from the Big C, and we’re already hitting peak Nutcracker/A Christmas Carol/A Christmas Story for the year. But this version of The Nutcracker from Orlando Jazz Orchestra is a muchneeded fresh take on a holiday classic.

Originally recorded in 1960, Duke Ellington’s arrangement of Tchaikovsky’s 1862 score breathed new life into the suite just in time for its centenary.

Ellington and Billy Strayhorn reworked the familiar tunes with the sounds and traditions of American swing and bop, resulting in a Nutcracker that elicits more toe-tapping than surreptitious snoozing. Stick around after the intermission for a jazz arrangement of Prokofiev, some festive classics sung by Amy Parnell, and Duke Ellington’s arrangement of singalong favorite “Jingle Bells.” The partnership between Orlando Jazz Orchestra and the Blue Bamboo Center here could well result in a new, old Christmastime tradition. – TM

One thing we at the Weekly appreciate is complete commitment to a gimmick, which the Total Punk rock’n’wrestling-themed Turnbuckle Tuesdays brings in spades. And now they’re going big – Griswolds-level big – for their yearly holiday-themed bash.

I’m a 37-year-old gay man who just got out of an abusive relationship. We were together five years, moved to Portland together, got married three years ago, yada, yada, yada. Grieving And Yearning Man Asking Nicely You’re not too old to enjoy yourself and evolve sexually, GAYMAN – you’re never too old to enjoy yourself or evolve, sexually or otherwise. But it takes time to bounce back after a committed LTR ends traumatically. So don’t rush yourself. But as soon as you can – sooner than perhaps it feels right – you’ll need to get out there. You’ll need to actively and intentionally reconnect to your homosexuality and the ways in which it shaped and continues to inform your personality, your perspective and your joy.

And now some random tips …

I’m not being look-ist or body-fascist here – this isn’t about having Instagrammable abs or the best torso on Grindr – but join a gym, GAYMAN. Or take up a sport that kicks your ass, cardio-wise. Forcing your body to outrun your brain is a good way to get back in touch with yourself physically, emotionally and sexually. And exercising – again, I’m not talking abs here – is good for us. It’s a natural antidepressant. It gets blood pumping into our extremities. (Your dick is an extremity.)

And it gets us out of our heads. It also creates a social space, if you do it regularly, where you can make friends and connections without booze or drugs or the scourge of dance music.

If the gym isn’t for you, ride a bike. If biking isn’t for you, run. If running isn’t for you, walk. Just get your ass moving.

Go volunteer somewhere, anywhere. Like

someone or other once said, it’s hard to feel sorry for yourself when you’re making yourself useful. Go volunteer at the ACLU or Planned Parenthood, do some copywriting for an LGBT civil-rights organization, find out what orgs are working with immigrants in your community and ask them what kind of help they need.

Please don’t succumb to meth or any of the other stupid drugs. Pot and alcohol – in moderation – aren’t stupid drugs.

Reach out to friends you lost touch with over the last five years, apologize for letting these relationships go, and ask if they’d like to reconnect. Not all will, GAYMAN – some might be too angry to reconnect right now (you may hear from them later), some might not have any extra friendship bandwidth right now (ditto). Focus on friends who want to reconnect, and don’t be bitter about friends who don’t.

Masturbate. A lot. And don’t use porn every single time – try using your imagination, flip through the ol’ solodex. Be open to new experiences. Ask yourself where you’ve always wanted to go. Pick a big gay event you’ve always wanted to attend – Gay Days at Disney World, International Mr. Leather in Chicago, the World Series of Beer Pong in Las Vegas – and start setting money aside so you’ll have that trip to look forward to.
