By far the story that most inflamed our readers last week was the news that Attorney General Ashley Moody had written an amicus brief supporting Texas’ misguided buttinsky scheme to challenge election results in four other states (“Florida AG Ashley Moody just lumped us in with the Texas lawsuit challenging the election results,” Dec. 9). Most responses were not in support of this (ultimately fruitless) move, expressing themselves with varying degrees of polite discourse, but as is the norm in all areas of public comment these days, there was also a hard, nutty core of pro-Trump, anti-Democrat sentiment. We’ve included reactions from both sides of the bleachers. @Lindsey Hayes At least former AG Pam Bondi got $25K from Trump. All Ashley Moody is getting is lunch at the White House and exposure to COVID. Meanwhile Florida just looks foolish. @Ernie Rapp “Republicans Gone Wild.” President Conspiracy Theory has Republicans signing on with him. I had no idea they would go this low. The new litmus test for Republicans is to be on Trump’s side or be a RINO. He is going to destroy their party. @Berry Jackie She needs to take care of the business of Florida. She really should be ashamed of herself. Does Trump mean that much that she can abolish Democracy? @Ricardo Sánchez I despise these political hacks treating this election process like a third world nation. @Jon Martins Republicans only care about law and order when it comes to oppression. If they really respected law and order they would accept what the courts decided. @Rich El-Khouri How is it not voter fraud when their guy wins, but voter fraud when they don’t get their way? And they call us “whiny liberals” when it seems like they’re the ones constantly bitching. @Joe Llorens Dumb and impotent demonstrations of loyalty to a colicky 75-year-old toddler. Short-sighted, too. I wonder how keen any state that gerrymanders its districts to within an inch of their lives would be to suddenly have the federal government decide, “OK, time to regulate and make our elections uniform and adequately provide access to voting for everyone.” @Tony Perry Like I said before, the Republicans running our state have to be the dumbest people in a government office! There is a reason that the rest of the nation is always laughing at FLORIDUH!

@Thomas H. Sharp In my wildest dreams I never thought that if I saw a billboard depicting Pam Bondi with the caption “Do you miss me yet?” that I’d have to think twice. @Sharon McBride Trump not only divided the people of American, now he’s dividing the states. Shame for people to support this. @Joseph Brock She should be disbarred and removed from office for signing onto that meritless, mendacious embarrassment. It is a naked abuse of process that violates both her oath of office and her duty as an officer of the Court. I’ve been a member of the Florida Bar for nearly 40 years. There is nothing legally or factually legitimate about the Texas lawsuit. @Gail Harland While Ashley Moody joins in this lawsuit, honest election officials in other states are risking violence to do their jobs. Moody and every other person knows that this election was fair and free of fraud. Our Republican officials need to speak up and end this false story. Call/email your Republican representatives. @Jim Scott Shameful. Are there no more Republicans with actual morals any longer? You all seem like seditionists to me now. @LaDonna Newsome Wagers Thank you, Ashley Moody, for supporting efforts for a fair election! Anyone who can’t see evidence of election fraud in the presidential election isn’t looking! @Kenzie Kleizo Good for her! I am glad that she and these other attorney generals are taking a stand with Texas to demand election integrity. If you don’t like living in a red state move to a blue state. You’ll find your corrupt elections, mask mandates, closed businesses. Please by all means. @Victoria Jeffers Parr Good for her! I don’t agree with every decision she makes but this is the right one for our country! @Maggy Ojeda Hernandez Florida continues to win! Great governor and AG. Thank you for representing our voices. @Bobbie Barrett This is absolutely what every American should be concerned about, voter integrity. Otherwise, let’s just let them commit fraud to win every election from now on! @John Dispennette Good … glad to see someone has some sense around here … I love Florida! The evidence will be revealed soon. Americans are tired of the Democrats’ nonsense. … We voted for Trump to destroy the Dems. orlandoweekly.com

THE WORST PEOPLE OF 2020 WHO AREN’T TRUMPS Part 1: Seditionists and authoritarians BY JEFFREY C. BILL M A N

We’re riding up hard on the ass end of

this shit year, which can mean only one thing: listicle season — that glorious time when columnists the world ’round pre-write retrospectives for the final weeks of December and spend the holidays on the sofa chugging whiskey. Since 2020 has been a parade of horribles, I thought it fitting to cap it off with a list of the year’s worst people. OK, technically, the worst Americans, as I’ve excluded the rest of the world. (Apologies to Narendra Modi.) I’ve also ignored the Trumps — Donald, Bloodshot Eyes Don, the Dumb One, Javanka, the Daughter Donald Forgets He Has, Donald’s-Soon-to-Be-Ex, the whole batch — because what’s the point? I’ve divided our baddies into four groups, as follows: ➦Seditionists: the conspiracy theorists, sore losers and D-league fascists trying to overturn Joe Biden’s victory. ➦Authoritarians: those who weakened the rule of law and used violence to quell anti-racist dissent. ➦Deniers: people whose ignorance, selfishness, political calculations or science denial made the COVID-19 pandemic worse than it had to be. ➦Cowards, crooks, enablers, and shitheads: Every list needs a catchall. So, without further ado, here’s part 1: seditionists and authoritarians.

Seditionists RUDY GIULIANI. Rudy’s had a tough couple of months: farting out loud in a public hearing, that Four Seasons Total Landscaping press conference, the weird hair dye (or maybe mascara?) incident, trying to get it on with Borat’s pretend-daughter, getting hospitalized for COVID, etc. And that’s to say nothing of getting repeatedly humiliated in court, losing lawsuits and watching his conspiracy theories get debunked. (Honorable men-

tion: Sidney Powell, who filed the quickly dismissed “Kraken” lawsuits, and Melissa Corone, Giuliani’s viral “star” witness in Michigan.) SEN. RON JOHNSON. First, the Wisconsin senator used his chairmanship of the homeland security committee to try to retroactively justify the Ukrainian coercion that led to Trump’s impeachment. Now, like so many others, he’s publicly undermining Biden’s legitimacy. Here’s what separates Johnson from the rest: In private, he admits that he knows better. But thinks it would be “political suicide” to oppose Trump — an “asshole” — and that matters more. U.S. REP. MIKE KELLY. After Trump lost Pennsylvania, Kelly sued, arguing that a law Pennsylvania Republicans passed a year ago to extend mail-in voting was unconstitutional, which meant the state Supreme Court needed to throw out all mail-in ballots and declare Trump the state’s winner. Shockingly, this argument didn’t take. TEXAS ATTORNEY GENERAL KEN PAXTON. Joined by 18 red-state attorneys general (including Florida’s own Ashley Moody) and the 106-member congressional treason caucus, Paxton — who is staring down a federal corruption investigation and could use a pardon — filed what amounts to Trump’s last stand: a petition to the Supreme Court to overturn election results in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Georgia. Paxton didn’t make a legal argument so much as thread together fact errors, debunked conspiracies, constitutional contortions and an astoundingly stupid mathematical “analysis” into a request that the Court decide Democratic votes are inherently illegitimate. The right-wing Roberts Court wasn’t interested. CHRIS RUDDY. Ruddy owns Newsmax, an increasingly popular cable outlet dedicated to fulfilling MAGA America’s fantasies. This is an unabashedly Trumpian universe in which election fraud is an unquestionable fact and Fox News — whose audience Newsmax is steal-

ATTORNEY GENERAL WILLIAM BARR. Barr’s DOJ dropped charges against Mike Flynn despite his guilty plea. Barr overrode prosecutors on Roger Stone’s sentence. He fearmongered about voting by mail. He opened an investigation into the FBI’s investigation of Russian election interference. His department sought to block Congress from enforcing White House subpoenas. He tried to have the DOJ defend Trump in a lawsuit accusing him of defamation for denying a rape allegation; had the DOJ won, the case would have been dismissed. But his most egregious offense this year: Amid Black Lives Matter protests, Barr personally ordered law enforcement to attack peaceful protesters in Lafayette Square to make way for Trump’s photo-op in front of a church. DETROIT POLICE CHIEF JAMES CRAIG, NYPD COMMISSIONER DERMOT SHEA: Any of the police chiefs who unleashed their head-stomping cops on BLM protesters would do. But Craig bears special mention because, after protesters sued Detroit when officers collapsed their lungs, fractured their bones and gave them concussions, his department sued Detroit Will Breathe for “conspiracy.” Shea is list-worthy because his cops planned an assault on protesters in the Black and Latino neighborhood of Mott Haven, which Shea said was “executed nearly flawlessly.” SEN. TOM COTTON. In June, the Arkansas senator penned a New York Times op-ed — immediately disavowed by almost everyone at the Times — advocating that Trump use the military to quash protests. “Cadres of left-wing radicals like antifa,” he claimed, needed to be crushed by an “overwhelming show of force.” Cotton is a likely 2024 presidential candidate. DHS “ACTING SECRETARY” CHAD WOLF. For the last year, Wolf has served as acting secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, though a federal judge has ruled he was illegally installed, hampering his efforts to deport Dreamers and block asylum seekers’ access to employment. That didn’t stop him and other DHS officials from allegedly cooking reports on Russian election interference, the border wall and antifa. Speaking of antifa: In response to Tucker Carlson’s demand that the Trump administration make mass arrests and bring RICO charges, Wolf — who had deployed paramilitary agents in unmarked vans to kidnap protesters — went on Carlson’s program and assured him they were working on it. Barr was “targeting and investigating the heads of” [BLM and antifa] and those “paying for those individuals to move across the country.” That wasn’t a real thing, and the RICO charges never came. ‘HOPE IS ON THE HORIZON’ Ron DeSantis on vaccine doses, Rebekah Jones, and mental health in Florida BY DARA KA M, N SF

A

s the state approaches another morbid coronavirus milestone of 20,000 deaths, Gov. Ron DeSantis delivered some glad tidings to Floridians: Hope is on the horizon. Florida is in line to receive nearly 180,000 doses of Pfizer Inc.’s COVID-19 vaccine as soon as federal health authorities sign off on the drug, with 81,900 doses slated to be used in long-term care facilities and the remainder going to five hospitals throughout the state. But the news wasn’t all giddy for DeSantis and his administration of late.

Raid on Rebekah Jones’ house

Rebekah Jones, a former Department of Health data analyst, made the rounds of national news programs after gun-wielding state police executed a search warrant at her Tallahassee home last week. Jones tweeted a video of agents entering her house and accused DeSantis of sending the “Gestapo” after her. The DeSantis administration fired Jones this year after she accused state health officials of manipulating data to suppress the number of reported COVID-19 cases and deaths in Florida. After her dismissal, Jones set up a competing COVID-19 dashboard to display data about the virus. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement conducted the search at Jones’ house after an investigation allegedly linked her home address to a Nov. 10 message sent on an internal Department of Health multi-user account. “It’s time to speak up before another 17,000 people are dead. You know this is wrong. You don’t have to be part of this. Be a hero. Speak out before it’s too late,” the message from an unidentified sender said. Last Thursday, FDLE Commissioner Rick Swearingen

took the unusual step of releasing body camera footage from the scene outside Jones’ home. Two videos showed agents waited 23 minutes, repeatedly knocking on her front door and calling her phone, before Jones came outside. Swearingen said he decided to distribute the recordings after his agents were “vilified” following the encounter with Jones and her family. The FDLE chief said his officers “exercised extreme patience” waiting for her to acknowledge their presence. During an appearance last Friday in Tampa, DeSantis angrily scolded the media for referring to the event as a “raid” and lashed out directly at Jones. “This individual became known, because she alleged a conspiracy theory at the Department of Health, which is unfounded and never proven at all. She was fired because she wasn’t doing a good job. None of the stuff that she said was ever proven. You’d think that would be the end of it. Obviously, she’s got issues. On this situation, there was an intrusion of a very sensitive system. It’s an emergency alert system. If somebody gets a hold of that, they can do a lot of damage,” DeSantis said. “Just because you are a darling of some corners of the fever swamps, that does not exempt you from following the law,” he added.

Shot in the arm

The controversy about Jones and the news about the Pfizer vaccine came as COVID-19 cases and deaths continued to climb throughout the state. State health officials have recorded more than 1 million COVID-19 cases and 19,851 coronavirus-related deaths since the onset of the pandemic. But DeSantis said vaccines that are about to be approved by federal officials will make a “huge differ-

ence,” especially for older Floridians and those who are at higher risk of becoming seriously ill or dying if they are exposed to the highly contagious virus. “There is a light at the end of the tunnel,” DeSantis told reporters in Tampa. A day earlier, the governor announced that Florida will receive 179,400 doses of Pfizer Inc.’s vaccine in its first shipment from the federal government. More than half of the vaccine — 97,500 doses — will be sent to five Florida hospitals to be administered to high-contact and high-exposure health care personnel, DeSantis said. The remaining 81,900 doses of the Pfizer vaccine will be sent to CVS and Walgreens and the Department of Health for use in nursing homes and assisted-living facilities. DeSantis has made clear that residents of longterm care facilities are his top priority. “We are working to get as much vaccine for our citizens as possible, but Florida will not, nor will any state, have enough to vaccinate everyone right off the bat,” DeSantis said in the video. At a White House vaccine summit last Tuesday, DeSantis indicated that all Florida nursing home residents could be inoculated by the end of the year. “These next six to eight weeks, if we can get the nursing homes, first-line health care (workers) and then start getting it out to the broader senior population, man, that is going to make such a big difference,” DeSantis said last Friday.

Mental health system ‘a mess’

The governor and First Lady Casey DeSantis have made boosting mental-health services one of their chief priorities since moving into the governor’s mansion in January 2019. The couple announced last Friday that the state would steer an extra $23 million toward mental-health resources, money that’s coming from the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security, or CARES, Act. The DeSantis’ announcement came the day after a statewide grand jury studying school safety issued an interim report shredding the state’s mental-health system, saying that “deficiencies in funding, leadership and services related to mental health care tend to turn up everywhere like bad pennies.” “This grand jury has received a great deal of evidence and testimony regarding financial deficiencies, conflicts between various agencies over information sharing and privacy, inadequate or inefficient provision of services and a number of other serious problems,” the report said. “To put it bluntly, our mental health care ‘system’ — if one can even call it that — is a mess, and we have formulated a spate of recommendations for straightforward improvement and further study in this critical area.” The 27-page document posted on the Florida Supreme Court website was the third interim report issued by the grand jury, which the court impaneled in February 2019 at the request of DeSantis. The request came a year after a gunman killed 17 students and faculty members at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland.

CHRISTMAS TIME IS HERE We raise a cup of cheer with hometown actor turned Broadway star Michael James Scott

BY S ETH KUBERSKY

I

t may feel like a thousand years ago in a faraway place, but it was actually just January this year when Broadway star and proud product of Central Florida’s schools Michael James Scott enchanted Dr. Phillips Center audiences as the Genie in Disney’s Aladdin. Now, as Orlandoans emerge from their own Cave of Wonders (aka quarantine) seeking live entertainment that isn’t live-streamed, Scott has returned home again to bookend 2020. He’s helping inaugurate the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts’ Frontyard Festival, an ambitious year-long outdoor event that’s influencing arts organizations across the country. Scott talked with Orlando Weekly via Zoom ahead of his Dec. 19 appearance at Frontyard Festival. We discussed his brand-new album, A Fierce Christmas, and his journey from Apopka to Agrabah and beyond.

“I

felt like I was living in a dream cloud that I always dreamt of when I was just a little boy running around Orlando, Florida, singing and dancing,” Scott says with a glowing grin, recalling how he felt standing on the Dr. Phillips Center’s mainstage in Aladdin. “I am the product of a community in Orlando, Florida, that really, really supports the arts,” explains Scott, an alumnus of Dr. Phillips High School’s performing arts program. “To be the product of that, of a community that really gives a crap about young artists and the arts in general, just made me so proud. And it was an incredibly humbling experience to be able to come back and give to all of the teachers — teachers to me are superheroes in our world — and those leaders who really believed in me, when I didn’t believe in myself.” After that Orlando engagement, Scott rejoined Aladdin’s Broadway company just in time for the pandemic’s first peak to hit New York City. “We were in Times Square; I was in the middle of it all,” says Scott. He contracted COVID-19, as did his husband. Although the couple recovered, they’ve lost several friends to the disease. “It’s been a really tough, tough, tough year to swallow all the craziness,” Scott says. “One thing it’s taught me … is the idea of ‘the time is now’ in terms of telling your friends and family you love them, telling your friends you love them. Not just not taking them for granted, because literally overnight it could change.” But, ever the optimist, Scott hopes healing for others might emerge from his family’s illness. “The good news out of it all — we still have the antibodies after all this time,” says Scott. “They wanted the plasma right away from my husband; his tested off the chart in terms of antibodies, and right away the next day, they were like ‘Can we get as much plasma as we can?’”

During his downtime, Scott has also delved into how the issues raised by Black Lives Matter impact the theater world. “It is so important, especially this year … the idea of diversity, inclusivity [and] of the racial awakening that is happening in our country. And I can be a part of the change in that,” says Scott. “A little chocolate boy like me could come from Orlando, Florida, and do the things I’ve gotten to do. I’m like, ‘It is possible, y’all, it is possible.’” Ironically, one of Scott’s favorite roles is now being re-examined for racial sensitivity. Scott was in the 2011 Tony-winning smash Book of Mormon from its first workshop, originating the role of the Doctor, who closes the musical with the infamous line, “I have maggots in my scrotum.” That lyric was initially “The third Matrix was the worst one,” until co-creator Trey Parker slipped Scott a secret rewrite moments before a run-through. “I came up and I said my line, and literally the room stopped and erupted,” Scott recalls “Josh Gad had to stop, like he couldn’t get through what was going on. And it was a keeper.” That hilarious moment has, however, become emblematic of the anti-African attitudes critics accuse the show of embracing. Scott asserts, “We Black folks were all in the room when they were building the show. … We knew what the material was and we believed in it.” In light of current awareness, Scott suggests future productions (or perhaps the rumored film adaptation) could make adjustments. “Stay tuned for how it may shift in terms of the material,” he says. “And the great thing is that [the writers] are open to that, because they know that it’s a new world.” But Scott doesn’t support eliminating all of the script’s sharp edges. “I think we need satire, we need humor. … Stand in your truth. Be unapologetic and do it.” While the rest of us struggled to remain productive, Scott’s pandemic project has been to record an entire album of holiday music. A Fierce Christmas, featuring the single “Christmas Time Is Here,” was produced by Orlando-based record label Scratch 17 and was recorded remotely with the help of Disney musical director Jim Abbott and nine New York musicians. “I’m obsessed with the holidays; I have been since I was little,” enthuses Scott, who says he’s been curating his ideal holiday song playlist since childhood. “People practice their Emmy and Oscar speeches; I’ve been practicing my holiday album.” Drawing inspiration from Bing Crosby and Harry Connick Jr., as well as Aretha Franklin and Yolanda Adams, the album embraces Scott’s diverse influences. “I’m a Broadway theater nerd. Hashtag theater nerd for life,” he declares. “I’m a big band lover, and then my gospel, and funk; that fusion for me is what I knew I needed to do.”

ORLANDO WEEKLY ● DEC. 16-22, 2020 ● orlandoweekly.com

This Saturday, Scott brings his virtually assembled album to life for the first time ever as one of the opening-month headliners at Dr. Phillips Center’s outdoor Frontyard Festival. Scott’s concert — which will be followed in coming months by Tye Tribbett, Keb’ Mo’, Wynton Marsalis and many more — will be observed by attendees in socially distanced pods, which afford private seating and contact-free concessions delivery. “This will be the first time I’ve been on the stage since this all went down,” Scott says, admitting he’s anxious about performing in public, but lauding the Dr. Phillips staff’s extensive safety protocols for both performers and patrons. “Everything, including the rehearsals and all of that, are all socially distanced. It is all very, very welltaken care of … it’s not a free-for-all.” With the Great White Way dark until at least June 2021, Scott aches for his fellow Broadway actors, with whom he remains in contact. “It’s been really interesting to see how everyone has kind of dispersed around the country, back to their hometowns,” he muses. “I feel like 2020 is the year of the pivot.” But he praises Disney Theatrical president Thomas Schumacher and his team for staying in touch with cast members. “They have been wonderfully open and very honest about the situation,” Scott says. “They are committed to the brand and bringing the shows back.” Likewise, Scott’s outlook remains optimistic for Orlando’s performers, despite today’s pain. “My heart is just broken for the amount of loss,” he says, “[but] I believe it will be back, and we will get there, but it’s going to take some time.” Accordingly, he felt it was important to invite “amazing, fierce talent from the Orlando area,” including local musicians and vocalists, to be part of the concert. Even his mom’s church and his in-laws (owners of Canaveral’s Wild Ocean Seafood Market) got in on the act with sponsorships. “It was really important to include those local aspects to make this happen. That’s what this is about, that’s the ‘front yard’: It’s bringing people together.” That craving for connection came through loud and clear throughout our conversation, especially as Scott looked forward to 2021 and Broadway’s eventual return. “I need to be able to look into the audience and see a patron’s face sitting there, looking into you, having that intimate connection in a theater,” Scott says. In the meantime, Scott lets his positivity shine like a magic lamp during these dark days. “All of the divisiveness that has our country right now so divided, I am protesting with joy,” says Scott. “I am showing [that] it’s OK to see a different chocolate face than what’s been seen in the news, and it’s OK to be a man of color who is smiling, a man of color who is not afraid to be authentically himself.” arts@orlandoweekly.com

Debt Neglector

THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS Orlando punks Debt Neglector release new album, with proceeds going to Stacey Abrams’ Fair Fight Action BY MATTHEW MOYER

V

eteran Orlando punks Debt Neglector got it together enough to record and release some new music this year — respect due — and are donating all the proceeds from this newly released digital album to get-outthe-vote efforts in Georgia. Now there’s some punk ethics! The currently Bandcamp-exclusive digital EP Bad Faith, released Dec. 4, can be had for a mere $5. And the money goes directly to Stacey Abrams’ Fair Fight Action organization, currently working very hard to flip the Senate in a Georgia runoff election set for January 2021. According to the band, they’ve already managed to raise a “nice chunk of change” for Fair Fight and money will continue to be donated through the entirety of December. So for a few bucks, not only do you get some stellar, angry local sounds complemented by surrealist-horror cover art, but you’re also contributing to progressive organizers working to make substantive change in Georgia and beyond. Debt Neglector’s vocalist-bassist Alex Goldfarb answered a couple of questions from Orlando Weekly about how the band fared during 2020, recording music during a pandemic and what impressed them about Fair Fight Action.

What has 2020 been like for the band? What plans got disrupted and how were you able to stay active? Like for most bands (and people in general), 2020 has been a huge bummer for us. We had a summer tour up the East Coast most of the way booked, recording time set up in April that we ended up canceling, and we were supposed to play the Fest in Gainesville for the fifth time this year. After things chilled out a bit and we understood the virus more, we came up with a safe plan to get into the studio in July to track the songs we had written. This EP is the first of those to see the light of day, and we’ll have an LP out sometime next year that we’re still mixing. What were the particular challenges to recording and releasing an EP during a pandemic? Recording during a pandemic was definitely a unique experience. Normally we’d all sort of hang out while we tracked, but we had to keep the interactions to a minimum. Our one guitar player is Type 1 diabetic and our other guitar player’s wife is as well. Since they were high risk, and

since I’ve been delivering my mother her groceries every week (she’s high risk as well), we had to take things super seriously. We masked up (except for vocals, obviously), sanitized constantly, and everybody isolated themselves as much as possible until we got the tracking done. Zach, our drummer, didn’t even get to really see much of the songs taking shape until mixing. Once he was done with his parts the first day, he stayed away until we needed him for extra percussion stuff we tried out. The one bright side to the whole thing is we were able to write a few extra songs during quarantine and able to finetune the ones we had a little bit better. I think in the end it’ll end up as a better finished product because we took a little extra time and tried out a few new things. What made you choose Fair Fight as the beneficiary of the EP’s proceeds? And how long is the “window” open for donations? We chose Fair Fight as the charity because flipping the Senate would be a huge deal for progress in our country. It’s an organization started by Stacey Abrams that’s doing work in Georgia where the two upcoming Senate runoff races could very well decide how effective the Biden-Harris presidency can be. They’re working to educate, register and fight voter disenfranchisement at the ground level and it seemed like the best place to pool our resources at the moment. Democratic control of the Senate would allow us to push for much more legislation that protects the LGBTQ+ community, provides better and less expensive health care, protects our environment, and works for everyday people instead of banks, Wall Street and huge corporations. Biden wasn’t our first choice of a candidate, but now that he’s in, we think it’s important that we push for the things we believe in, and that’ll be a lot easier without Mitch McConnell shutting down every progressive piece of legislation that passes the House. The Senate runoffs aren’t happening until Jan. 5, 2021, so we’ll keep donating all of the proceeds from the new digital EP throughout the entire month of December. Every little bit helps!

(“There is no ‘r’ in masala”) and, at times, pedantic and esoteric — the section devoted to connecting cooking and mathematics in particular. Yet the experiences and observations Pulapaka recounts — the road trips, racist encounters, accolades and disappointments — are tinged with a raw emotional candor, a candor that often turns reflective. “I have taken a deep dive into myself as a human being,” he writes, revealing that after being a vegetarian for the first 21 years of his life, he began eating meat after moving to the United States. He stops short of saying why, stating only that the reasons were “complex and numerous” and that when compared to his native India, vegetarian food in this country, including veg fare served in restaurants, is “generally pretty lame.” It’s a harsh, possibly even unfair, indictment, but Pulapaka has never been one to mince words. “I conjectured that this reality was either a direct result of cultural and culinary habits, or a complete lack of knowledge regarding flavor development,” he posits. So, armed with his theory, Pulapaka sets out to right the apparent wrong by steering readers toward the second section of the book — a Promised Land of innovative and international plant-based recipes encompassing everything from chutneys and marinades to curries and street food. (His award-winning poutine recipe is reason alone to buy this book.) He even goes so far as to recommend substitutions for recipe ingredients. No ajwain in your pantry? No problem. Just use dried thyme instead. Ran out of shiso? Some lemon zest and mint will do just fine. He even offers egg and dairy alternatives for vegans. The recipes, rated from “Basic” to “Intermediate” to “Pro” with informational snippets included for each, are concise and straightforward so as not to intimidate the home cook, be it in a preparation of Ethiopian misr wat, Moroccan zaalouk or Indian khichdi. The flavor spectrum of the recipes is impressively broad, but Pulapaka saves the best for last — a vegan degustation menu presented in 15 “acts” toward the end of this odyssey. It starts with a chilled vichyssoise with warm monsoon corn and concludes with a caramelized onion and raisin DREAMING IN SPICE: A SINFULLY bisteeya. The multicourse menu VEGETARIAN ODYSSEY is at once original, thoughtful in By Hari Pulapaka its progression and, yes, sinfully (390 pages; Global Cooking School; $33.50) vegetarian. dreaminginspice.com Through it all, I couldn’t help but wonder why Pulapaka gave up being a vegetarian, and if writing this book necessitated a personal reckoning of sorts. Apart from the medical, environmental, ethical and financial benefits Pulapaka expounds on, his wife Jenneffer has been a practicing vegetarian for three decades. Perhaps I’m In Dreaming in Spice: A Sinfully Vegetarian Odyssey, an ex-veg forays missing the point — the book, after all, isn’t an anti-meat back into the meatless world proclamation, nor is it a conversion manifesto. It’s about a BY FAIYAZ KARA journey, to which the book’s title alludes, and how the road to a vegetarian diet can be a long and winding one. “I don’t ari Pulapaka has never been one to shy away from Odyssey — the 54-year-old forages the world of plant-based expect carnivores to give up meat because of the dishes in engaging Central Florida’s food community on dining and establishes himself as an advocate for vegetarian this book,” Pulapaka says. “However, if someone reduces their meat consumption because of this book, then I will sociopolitical causes. WHAT THE CHUCK

Chef Nat Russell’s What the Chuck, the latest addition to Sanford food hall Henry’s Depot, is a must-stop for burger snobs, be they lovers of burger classicism or burger modernity. The “1960s Smashburger” will certainly please the former, while the Southern-inspired “Tennessee Truffle,” named after Russell’s restaurant across the street, will please the latter. French fries are thick-cut and cooked in canola oil. Treat yourself to a side of pickles for $1 extra. Open daily. (reviewed Dec. 9) 212 W. First St., Sanford, 407-548-6931, wtcsanford.com, $$

RUSSELL’S ON LAKE IVANHOE

Russell’s on Lake Ivanhoe has already positioned itself as the best restaurant in 32804. Chef Emmanuel Clement’s flawless creations include his “royale with cheese” burger (one of the best in the city) to the crispy duck confit. A “Napoleon” of roasted beets and burrata shows his technical skills, while the barrelfish seasoned with ginger, cumin and a hint of curry shows he can be bold without being heavyhanded. Trying the pineapple oldfashioned and pineapple Foster is a must. (reviewed Dec. 2) 1414 N. Orange Ave., 407-601-3508, russellsorlando.com, $$$$

AJI CEVICHE BAR

Aji’s Casselberry locale is a bright, spirited space much like the restaurant’s specialty ceviches, of which there are many. Aji spotlights the global influence of Peruvian cuisine as well with such fried rice dishes as chaufa and aeropuerto, Japanese-influenced tiradito and sushi rolls, and filling risottos with lomo saltado. Fresh juices served in half-liter carafes are an absolute must, as are endings of lucuma mousse and luscious suspiro a la limeña. (reviewed Nov. 25) 1436 N. ANTICA PIZZERIA & MOZZARELLA BAR

Viola Davis stars in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, premiering Friday on Netflix

ON (small) SCREENS IN ORLANDO

PHOTO COURTESY NETFLIX PHOTO BY DAVID LEE FOR NETFLIX

Streaming premieres you won’t want to miss by Steve Schneider PREMIERES WEDNESDAY: The Expanse: Season 5 — In the first three of 10 new episodes, Earthers venture out beyond our solar system to seek their destiny. Careful, fellas: The last time we did that, we ended up as Molly Maids for Dr. Zaius. (Amazon Prime) The Ripper — Not as in Jack, but as in the Yorkshire Ripper, who as seen in this fourpart series terrorized 1970s England, murdering a total of 13 women. Forty years later, it’s much easier to kill the British: Just give them the COVID vaccine! (Netflix)

PREMIERES THURSDAY: Homeschool Musical: Class of 2020 — Laura Benanti produced this documentary series, which shows how high-school theater students surmounted the challenges of the Year of the ’Rona. Boy, it must have sucked to have to sell that crappy intermission orange drink through Uber Eats. (HBO Max) The Pale Door — The pitch: It’s Bordello of Blood meets that lousy episode of Star Trek in which they restage the gunfight at the OK Corral. The fabled Dalton Gang invades a ghost-town brothel, only to find

it’s actually a witches’ coven. Something like this happened to me at Wahlburgers once! (Shudder) Sesame Street: Holiday at Hooper’s — Elmo and Baby Bear raid Hooper’s Store to help them celebrate both Christmas and Hanukkah. Because nothing says the holidays like beef jerky from the bodega. (HBO Max) The Stand — The second attempt at adapting Stephen King’s post-apocalyptic doorstop was envisioned as a 10-episode miniseries, but had been whittled down to nine episodes by the time writing was finished. “I do not understand this concept,” says Stephen King. (CBS All Access)

PREMIERES FRIDAY: A Creepshow Holiday Special — Titled Shapeshifters Anonymous, the latest Creepshow movie takes us into the workings of a very special support group. And with a name like that, I’m assuming they’re some sort of fat-acceptance organization. Pry my McRib from my cold, dead hands! (Shudder) The Grand Tour Presents: A Massive Hunt — Top Gear expats Jeremy Clarkson, James

May and Richard Hammond motor across the difficult terrain of Madagascar in search of a hidden treasure. Translation for the non-British world: “something to colonize.” (Amazon Prime) Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom — The late Chadwick Boseman co-stars alongside Viola Davis in an adaptation of the August Wilson classic about blues musicians who trade stories while waiting for an afternoon recording session. Yes, they somehow got 94 minutes out of “Well, I’m broke.” “Me too.” (Netflix) On Pointe — Six documentary episodes show young students at New York’s School of American Ballet preparing their annual performance of The Nutcracker. In a related subplot, they learn how to fight off subway perverts by going for the crotch. (Disney+)

PREMIERES TUESDAY: You Cannot Kill David Arquette — Following his utterly contrived, short-lived and careerkilling stint as WCW Heavyweight Champion in 2000, actor David Arquette tries to make it in the sport as a legitimate wrestler. And yes, I know “legitimate wrestler” is a contradiction in terms. But these days, so is “actor David Arquette.” (Hulu) orlandoweekly.com

The fight for the U.S. election

isn’t over yet, and I don’t mean that in the total bullshit, laughed-out-of-court Trump sense. I’m talking about the Waterloo of the Georgia runoffs that could flip the Senate and completely guarantee the correction our country is trying to make. To that end, Orlando punk band Debt Neglector are local heroes this week — and, if all goes right, true national heroes come January. They’re using the release of their latest record, the Bad Faith EP, to help fuel that battleground blitz and bring it over the goal line. They’re funneling 100 percent of the money earned from sales of this digital EP on Bandcamp directly to Fair Fight Action, the Stacey Abrams-founded, provoting organization that’s mobilizing hard right now in Georgia. Now, of course you’d still be a perfectly upstanding citizen if you just donated directly to Fair Fight. But why not get some empowering punk rock tunes out of it? Still, if you don’t care about this cause then you’re an asshole. Just kidding … asshole. Eventually, though, the music will be made available for general streaming next month after this noble campaign — you know, for all you assholes.

CONCERT PICKS THIS WEEK

Sleigher: The Heavy Metal Xmas Party: Holiday cheer is for headbangers too, and with the year we’ve had, a little raging is definitely in order. Featuring Withering Earth, Auditory Armory, Darkness by Design and Beyond Silence,

If you go out, please respect everyone’s distance — for all our sakes

this Central Florida roundup is a stuffed stocking of theatrical metal. Anyone wearing a Santa hat or an ugly Christmas sweater gets drink specials. Mask required for entry and standing, and drinking allowed only when seated. (7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 18, The Haven Lounge, $10-$12) LPT: With all the surprisingly sustained cool weather we’ve been enjoying lately, surely some of us Central Floridians are shivering like chihuahuas. Well, this event is the perfect chance to thaw out in glory. With a whopping 10-piece orchestra, Jacksonville salsa syndicate LPT will blow through town like a hot tropical wind with their true-school Afro-Cuban heat. Limited capacity show. (8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 18, The New Standard, no cover) Carol Stein: When the headliner of a 2016 Timucua concert was a no-show, I watched this local performer agree to take the stage at a show she was only at as a spectator and completely bring down a house full of people who had devoted their evening to seeing someone else. It was an impromptu marvel that nutshelled the pure joy of watching a consummate piano performer like Stein deliver music

as entertainment and not just art. (8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 18, Blue Bamboo Center for the Arts, $25) Cosmic Gate: From construction delays to pandemic ones, anticipated new venue the Vanguard has loomed as the biggest question mark in the city’s music landscape for over two years. Now, the most dramatic reboot of the historic nightclub at Firestone since probably the 1990s has finally opened. But instead of some grand, bottle-popping reveal, the big new hall has so far slowly and cautiously unveiled itself in a slow trickle of events. The next features German trance breakouts Cosmic Gate along with Luccio, Robb Blak and Suzy Solar. Safety measures will include mask requirement, temperature check, half-capacity restriction and a new Reme Halo air purification system. (9 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 19, The Vanguard, $14.99-$44.99) The Byrne Brothers: While checking out the plentiful Irish music offerings at Raglan Road a couple years ago, probably the most genuine and charming display I saw was this Byrne family act, who were then in residence at the Disney Springs entertainment spot. Accompanied by their father Tommy, the three young brothers — Luca, Finn and Dempsey — bring traditional authenticity straight from the old country. They’re based in Orlando now but hail from Dublin and hold championships in Ireland in traditional instruments and even dancing, so expect a lively display with as many jigs as jams. “GAY DREAM BELIEVER”

Dan: I’m wondering if you can help me with some dream interpretation. If it helps for context, I’m a single 29-year-old gay man. For just about as long as I can remember, I’ve been having mildly unsatisfying sex dreams in that the dreams never seem to lead to sex itself. My dream partners range from people I work with to people from high school to celebrities I’ll never get the chance to meet. I never dream about someone I wouldn’t want to sleep with in the waking world, given the opportunity. The scenarios are generally different as well. Sometimes the sexual tension is palpable but we’re in a crowded room. Sometimes we get close enough to get started but the setting is off. Sometimes we start to get hot and heavy, but the dream ends just prior to the sex. In each case I wake up frustrated and masturbate to finish the fantasy. I’ve been pretty sexually starved during the pandemic, Dan, so you can imagine my frustration when I woke up this morning having almost had dream sex with Andrew Rannells. Can you think of why this might be happening? Any advice would be appreciated! Distancing Real Earnestly And Missing Erotic Romps “Well this is certainly VERY interesting,” said actor, singer, and author Andrew Rannells. “I’m honored I made the list of people DREAMER would actually have sex with in real life, if given the chance.” Seeing as this two-time Tony-Award nominee is taken, there’s not much chance of something happening between an anonymous “Savage Love” reader and Rannells, one of the stars of The Prom on Netflix. But Rannells was more than happy to do a little amateur dream interpretation for a fan. “As for the root of this issue,” said Rannells, “I suppose it could have something to do with not having the confidence of actually following through with the full act? Maybe while awake he could experiment with fantasizing about a more complete experience and see if that changes his dream life?” My two cents: Perhaps these dreams are lingering evidence of some shame about your same-sex desires — which is why your dreams conspire to prevent you from having gay sex — or perhaps the continued existence of bigots who would prevent gay men from having sex preys on your subconscious mind and manifests in the form of these frustrating/frustration dreams. Or maybe there’s no way of knowing what the hell is going on here and trying to attach meaning to something as random as a dream is a waste of time or a scam or both. 42

The real takeaway here, DREAMER, is that you now have Rannells’ permission to masturbate about him whenever you like — or at least that’s how I would interpret his encouragement to fantasize about “more complete” experiences with the men who populate your dreams, Rannells included. You didn’t need his permission to masturbate about him, of course, and as a general rule we shouldn’t need to ask the people we want to jack off about for their OK. But Rannells basically offered, DREAMER, so have at. “Ultimately, we can’t control our dreams,” added Rannells. “For instance, I have a recurring stress dream where I am supposed to be driving Jessica Lange somewhere and I can’t get the GPS to work. What does it mean? We’ll never know.” Dan: After years of receiving oral sex from girlfriends who were careful with my testicles, I met a woman who wasn’t so careful. For our fifth date, she came back to my place and we watched a movie. After the movie we began to kiss, and soon she was making love to my stiff penis with her mouth while rather roughly massaging my testicles. I was liking it quite a bit. The more pressure she applied to my testicles, the harder my penis became. This has never happened to me in my 33 years of lovemaking! I actually asked her to squeeze my testicles harder and harder and I can honestly say my penis was harder than it has ever been. Against my better judgment, I asked her to squeeze my testicles as hard as she could. After several seconds of the most intense pressure she could provide, I had the most powerful orgasm I have ever had. All of a sudden, I was dizzy and my vision went black. When I finally came back to reality, there was an extraordinary amount of come all over the place. She has made love to my penis dozens of times since in the same manner. My question: Will there be any physical complications to my newly discovered taste for this kind of play? I look forward to your response! This Exquisitely Sensuous Torment Enhances Sex Ball busting — the kink you stumbled on — is inherently risky, TESTES, in that you could actually rupture, aka “bust,” one or both of your balls. Hence the name. But considering how much pleasure you’re deriving from this and considering how short life is and considering how long you’ve been sexually active and considering how little use you’re gonna get out of your balls once you’re dead, TESTES, I don’t see any reason why you should deprive yourself

ORLANDO WEEKLY ● DEC. 16-22, 2020 ● orlandoweekly.com

— at this stage — of this newly discovered sexual pleasure. Well, actually … I can see one reason why you might want to knock this off: When it comes to ball busting, TESTES, there’s no way to eliminate the risk of a physical complication that lands your sack in the emergency room, and E.R. nurses and doctors have enough on their plates right now. So maybe give your balls a break until after the pandemic is over and then … go nuts. Dan: I’m writing in response to WHY, the Italian fellow whose partner has a significantly lower libido than he does. I would like to share my perspective. I have a high libido and my partner of more than 20 years has a low libido. From the perspective of the person with the lower libido, there’s no problem to address. The person with the lower libido gets to have sex whenever they want. When they don’t want sex, it doesn’t happen. If WHY wants to engage his partner in a conversation about this he has to make it clear this is a make-or-break situation. Use very specific language like, “If we can’t talk about this, I’m leaving,” or, “If we don’t go to counseling, I can’t stay in this relationship.” In my case, I did not communicate how important the issue was. Eventually I acted out and had a random hookup. We wound up in counseling, which got us talking, but nothing changed the fact that we have very different libidos. More than likely I am moving out when our youngest son goes to college. If I had to do it over again, I would have let my partner know exactly how important it is to me that we have a healthy, robust sexual relationship. Having a difficult conversation is better than acting out in a way that puts everyone’s health at risk and damages trust. I have no idea if that would have changed things between us, but I would feel a whole lot better about how things went down. One Man’s Opinion Thank you for sharing, OMO, and here’s hoping you get a chance to “do it over again.” With a new partner, if you wind up leaving your partner, or with the partner you have now, if you stay. There’s nothing you can say to change your partner’s libido, OMO, but if you keep talking you may be able to work out a compromise or an accommodation that takes the pressure off her (to round her libido up) and off you (to round yours down). Good luck. On the Lovecast, learn all about your pelvic floor with Dr. Rachel Gelman: savagelovecast.com mail@savagelove.net

Meet Pepsi! Pepsi (A459959) was brought into our shelter as a stray and has been here since October 2020. When he first came into the shelter, he had several medical issues that deterred him from being adopted but he has made so much progress! He quickly became a staff favorite — he enjoys head scratches, belly rubs, playing with small squeaky cat toys and, of course, snuggles. Pepsi has been neutered, microchipped, vaccinated and is ready to go home. To meet this diamond in the rough, email animalservices@ocfl. net or make an appointment at v2.waitwhile.com/lists/ orangecountyani/join. During the month of December we are celebrating The 12 Strays of Christmas adoption promotion, which reduces adoption fees for both dogs and cats to $10. Orange County Animal Services is located at 2769 Conroy Road in Orlando, near the Mall at Millenia. The shelter is open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1-5 p.m. Sunday.
