IN MEMORIAM: THE ORLANDO 49 Every week between now and the one-year anniversary of the Pulse Nightclub shootings, Orlando Weekly will profile a person killed on June 12, 2016. This week: Oscar Ambiorix Aracena Montero One of Oscar Aracena Montero’s last dreams was to bring his mother from the Dominican Republican to Florida.

The 26-yearold had left her in Santo Domingo as a child almost 10 years ago to move with his father, Ambiorix Aracena, to Tampa, according to Listín Diario, a Dominican newspaper. Later, Aracena Montero moved to Kissimmee and worked as a manager at a McDonald’s in Orlando. He was also a business management student on the Orlando campus of Ana G. Méndez University, where he was known for his “positive attitude and outlook on life,” according to the Orlando Sentinel. Recently, he had bought a house with one of his best friends, Simon Carrillo; they lived there with their pet Chihuahuas.

Listín Diario reports his mother, Altagracia Montero Díaz, was a month away from reuniting with her son when on June 12, Aracena Montero, Carrillo and many of their friends perished on Latin Night at the gay nightclub Pulse in a mass shooting.

Aileen Carrillo says her brother and Aracena Montero loved to travel to new places and explore. Before their deaths, the two friends had just come back from a trip to New York and Niagara Falls in Canada.

During a vigil, Aracena Montero’s uncle says his nephew visited him in New York before returning to Orlando.

“Oscar played piano, he sang and he loved God since he was a child,” his uncle said. “In my prayers for him, I remember a verse from the Bible that says, ‘For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.’”

After his death, Aracena Montero’s parents received his degree from Ana G. Méndez University.

“I feel proud of him because I know he was a good kid, a good student, a good friend, a good employee, a good son and a good brother,” Ambiorix Aracena told WFTV 9.

“He was an incredible person. He was a hard worker, and he had a lot of dreams.”

Pulse owner says she will reopen nightclub at new location: After surprising many last week with her announcement that she wouldn’t sell the nightclub to the city of Orlando, Barbara Poma now says she plans to reopen Pulse in a different location but under the same name. Poma tells WMFE 90.7 News that the new club will be similar to the original “because that is what supporters and former staffers say they want when they have gathered at Pulse events since the massacre.” Don’t expect anything soon, though. Poma says she isn’t sure yet about what the future of Pulse looks like, but they are first working on plans for a memorial at the original location.

Three juveniles arrested in death of teenager Roger Trindade: The Winter Park Police Department says it has arrested three teenagers in the death of Roger Trindade, a 15-year-old Winter Park High School student who was found unconscious in October after a fight on Park Avenue. Law enforcement officials made the announcement after the Orange County Medical Examiner’s Office concluded Roger’s death was a homicide as a result of blunt force trauma. Two 15-year-old boys were charged with manslaughter and battery, and a 14-year-old boy was charged with witness tampering. Roger and his family had recently moved to Central Florida from Brazil.

Trump returns to Orlando this week on ‘Thank You Tour’: President-elect Donald Trump and his running mate, Mike Pence, are coming to Orlando on Friday, Dec. 16, to thank all of you, despite the fact that this city overwhelmingly voted for Hillary Clinton. Trump apparently did not get enough of the rabble-rousing rallies he held throughout the campaign and is coming back for more on his “U.S.A. Thank You Tour.” Trump won Florida’s 29 electoral votes, but in Orange County, Clinton beat Trump by a margin of 60 percent to 35 percent.

Floridians stay running over panthers and manatees: Geez, Florida! The Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission reports Florida boaters have killed 98 manatees so far this year, which tops the 2009 record of 97. WINTER IS COMING Progressives need to get ready Before we dive in, some house-

keeping. You’ll notice – or maybe you won’t, or maybe you noticed and you don’t care – that we changed this column’s name, from Legends of the Fall to Informed Dissent.

We did so for two reasons: First, with the elections in the rearview, LOTF no longer seemed applicable. Second, and more literally, fall itself will soon be in the rearview.

Winter, literally and metaphorically, is coming.

It’s now been a little over a month since Donald Trump – with just 46 percent of the vote, thanks to the anachronism of the Electoral College – became presidentelect, and in that time, we’ve gotten a fair sense of what his presidency will look like.

Consider his appointments: a white nationalist as senior adviser; a former Goldman Sachs exec who ran a foreclosure mill after the housing crisis as treasury secretary; another Goldman Sachs exec as National Economic Council director; a minimum-wage-and-regulation-hating fast-food titan to head the Labor Department; an attorney general who, 30 years ago, was deemed too racist for the federal bench; a wrestling executive (who is, with her husband, the biggest single donor to the Trump Foundation; were this President-elect Clinton we were talking about, that would be a frontpage story) to run the Small Business Administration; a climate change denier to head the Environmental Protection Agency; a billionaire whose coal mine exploded, killing 12, as commerce secretary; a secretary of the interior who has advocated turning public lands over to pri8

stamps and housing assistance for the poor. These are things that have all long been part of Ryan’s budgetary plans.

Expect attacks on LGBT and reproductive rights, on public schools and worker protections, not to mention the looming peril to civil liberties and voting rights, especially in the wake of a future terrorist attack.

Trump, the neophyte who – other than building a wall (which won’t happen), massive tariffs on outsourcers (also not happening) and making America great again (eye roll) – has no discernible policy agenda, will go along for the ride.

All of which is to say, this is a time for resistance – for informed dissent, for loud, aggressive, unrelenting resistance, a resistance that pushes back against the tide of willful ignorance that empowers Trumpism. To wit: According to Public Policy Polling, two-thirds of Trump voters believe that Trump won the popular vote (he lost by more than 2.5 million votes), that the stock market went down under President Obama (it tripled), and that unemployment increased under Obama (it fell by more than half ).

Speaking of PPP, Tom Jensen, the North Carolina-based firm’s director, wrote last week about why, in an otherwise good year for N.C. Republicans, the state’s governor lost his re-election bid and what that can tell us about how to fight Trump.

And it boils down to this: From the outset of Gov. Pat McCrory’s administration, the left was there, protesting, demonstrating, fighting like hell to tie every unpopular policy around his neck.

“Push back hard from day one,” Jensen wrote. “Be visible. Capture the public’s attention, no matter what you have to do to do it.”

grandma Grandparents, gifts, Ghostbusters II? A holiday tale from Florida cartoonist and zine-maker Jen Sandwich

J

en Sandwich is a prolific DIY comic/zine author and illustrator based in South Florida.

Her mostly autobiographical works are populated with anthropomorphic cats and rabbits and deftly mix the heart-rending and the hilarious. (See more of her work at jensandwich.squarespace.com.) In honor of the rapidly approaching holidays, this week we bring you one of Sandwich’s Christmas memories.

Orlando Weekly: What was the first comic you really loved?

Jen Sandwich: The first comic I really

loved when I was a teenager was Love & Rockets. It just totally changed the perception I’d had of what a comic could be.

How long have you been creating?

I’ve been putting out zines for 30 years, with maybe three gaps of a few years in between issues. I just made a list and came up with 40 titles, not counting the ones I did when I was a kid. I can’t remember how many of those issues and little one-off booklets I did back then – maybe 10 or 15?

Would you talk a little about your working methods?

When I do comics, I write and sketch in a comp book first. Most of the time I just write everything out but sometimes I storyboard as I go. Usually the second I finish writing everything for an issue I start penciling; I try to keep a good momentum going. After I pencil everything I ink all the lettering and then the largest objects first. If you work large to

small, focusing on the finer details last, it’s like you’re knocking off all the lowhanging fruit first and it just seems to go a lot smoother that way.

Do you have any quirky holiday traditions?

I don’t think any of our holiday traditions are quirky. My parents and I drive around looking at lights and then we open presents from one another and eat snacks for dinner. It’s pretty low-key. I used to go home afterward and get drunk with my cats and mess around with all my new stuff, but I don’t drink anymore so now it’s even more low-key.

Is this story autobiographical?

All of my comics are autobiographical fiction. So the people are real, and the events occurred, but sometimes details are changed and most of the time dialogue is created to fit into a cohesive narrative. In this story, most of what happened was true to life, but in real life I had met those grandparents I think once before that I could recall. I at least knew that that grandmother existed. We also had gone to my grandpa’s farm at some point during that trip, but the rest of the story pretty much happened the way it’s written.

When I’m writing comics I try to write how things felt. That’s what always stands out to me the most from memories of childhood – the way everything felt more than the way everything looked.

So while the details sometimes differ, the fictional accounts always convey the same feelings that I’d had when it was first happening to me. arts@orlandoweekly.com

—George Wallace, executive director of the Orlando Fringe, announced his resignation, effective Feb. 28, 2017. He’ll be relocating to Indianapolis to assume the newly created position of associate director of IndyFringe.

Wallace began his career with the Orlando Fringe as a volunteer in 2002 under former festival producer Beth Marshall, and served as volunteer coordinator, director of operations and general manager before being promoted in 2014. Wallace says, “I’m looking forward to new challenges ... and finally I’ll be able to wear scarves. And boots.” You can bid him farewell at January’s Fringe Winter Mini-Fest, featuring 20plus fan favorites from last May’s festival.

—Andrea Bailey Cox, CEO of the Art & History Museums – Maitland has resigned, effective Dec. 19, and will relocate to Knoxville, Tennessee, to head the Aslan Foundation. Bailey Cox oversaw the consolidation of the Maitland Art Center and the Maitland Historical Society, revived the center’s artist-in-residence program, launched the Art31 festival, and helped the Andre Smith– designed complex become Central Florida’s first National Historic Landmark. A&H’s director of marketing, Rae Ward, will serve as interim director.

I’m ordinarily among those

grumbling about Christmas calendar creep, but this season I dove head-first into the holidays with an early December Very Merrytime Disney Cruise. To many, the idea of seven days at sea with ugly sweater–clad mice must sound like the seventh level of hell. But from Dickens-esque caroling and storytime with Mrs. Claus to gingerbread house–building lessons and an endless loop of White Christmas on every stateroom TV, Disney’s holiday-themed cruises represented Mickey’s brand at its marvelously mawkish, manipulative, eyemoistening best.

Of course, the sticker price on a Disney holiday cruise could make Scrooge McDuck cry uncle; ditto the Walt Disney World parks, which now increase the prices of single-day passes on peak days and block out days around the holidays for all but their priciest Platinum passholders. If you can afford a Christmas visit to the Magic Kingdom, Disney has invented new ways to extract additional dollars, exemplified by the $650 per day they are now asking for rental of a private “Kingdom Cabana” in Tomorrowland.

Clustered outside Space Mountain like a futuristic favela, the eight-person tents come equipped with IKEA-esque furnishings and cell phone chargers. Perks like mouse ears, ice cream bars and reserved fireworks viewing are thrown in, but you could book a night in a monorail resort instead and have cash left over.

Fortunately, this year there’s one spectacular seasonal Disney attraction that you don’t need to spend a dime to see. After two decades of drawing crowds to Disney’s Hollywood Studios, the Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights was retired, with much of the park facing the wrecking

Disney Springs celebrates its first Christmas with Starbright Holidays, a drone show sure to entice twinkle-light lovers ball for Star Wars Land. With a similar holiday display at Epcot also long since ended, twinkle light–loving guests were left without anything to ooh and ahh at. So in steps the newly completed Disney Springs, which is celebrating its first Christmas as the ex-Downtown Disney with free entertainment certain to entice those suffering from Osborne withdrawal.

Since its late November debut, the Starbright Holidays drone show has been drawing hordes of visitors to Disney Springs’ usually underpopulated West Side. Developed in cooperation with Intel and directed by Michael Roddy, this gorgeous production uses a swarm of 300 volleyball-sized drones to create constellations of colored lights in the air above the shopping center’s waterfront. Like flickering fairies, the computer-controlled mini-copters form a spinning Christmas tree and the dove of peace, eliciting collective gasps as they sparkle in sync with a subtly Disneyfied soundtrack of classic carols.

My only critique of Starbright Holidays is that, at barely five minutes long, it’s more of a tech demo than a fully developed performance, and several additional sequences seen during rehearsals are absent from the finished product. As entertaining as this experiment is, I can’t see it displacing

traditional fireworks until issues of battery life and GPS reliability are resolved.

Similarly, DHS’s awkwardly named Jingle Bell, Jingle BAM! spectacle pared back the pyrotechnics, instead focusing on largescale video mapping (Disney’s best aside from Magic Kingdom’s new Once Upon a Time castle display), along with laser lights and faux snow. It’s a well-intended effort, but no digital effect can deliver the primitive punch of an old-fashioned explosive projectile.

Be prepared for the I-4 exit ramp into the complex’s new parking garages to back up in the evenings (aim for the surface lot behind Cirque du Soleil if possible), and expect to find masses mobbing the walkway behind Bongos Cuban Cafe angling for an ideal view. If you cherish elbow room, stay toward the House of Blues end of the canal, or consider visiting the Saratoga Springs hotel and watching the Starbright Holidays from across the waterway.

However, if you are willing to brave the Christmas crowds, stick around afterward and explore the recently completed Town Center district. The former bus stop turned shopping strip, which resembles a charmless outlet mall by day, now becomes almost enchanting after dusk thanks to the addition of holiday lights and window decor. Modern musical La La Land blends innovation with Hollywood nostalgia

verything old is new again,” Peter Allen wrote (and sang).

But if he had seen La La Land, he might have omitted the word “again,” for never have the glory days of Hollywood been reimagined quite like they are in the new film by writer-director Damien Chazelle.

La La Land is part musical fantasy, part romantic dramedy and part homage to such classics as Singin’ in the Rain, Rebel Without a Cause and An American in Paris, but it’s also the tale of two very real people with very real, 21st-century L.A. problems.

Sebastian (Ryan Gosling) is a jazz pianist stuck banging out Christmas ditties to unappreciative gourmands while longing to open his own club and revive an art form that’s more endangered than Southern Californian modesty. In short, he longs for something real. Into his life meanders Mia (Emma Stone), another frustrated California dreamer who works as a Warner Bros. Studio backlot barista by day and receives rejections from casting directors by twilight. That they meet and fall in love is not so much real-life serendipity as

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

include “Helen Mirren as Death” and “Keira Knightley as Love,” you usually want to sit up and take notice – that is, if you hope to someday win the Jeopardy category “Hollywood Fiascos.” Will Smith is obviously hoping for better from his latest self-improvement parable, in which a bereaved fella sends impassioned letters to the universe at large, only for the universe to respond. (Christ, I can’t even get Gmail to work properly.) Smith is citing the loss of his father during the production process as a major contributor to his performance, which means if the movie tanks, he’s a shoo-in for the next season of Dancing With the Stars. If it’s a hit, look for a Disney Channel spinoff, Kids’ Letters to Death. (PG-13) Rogue One: A Star Wars Story I recently became a commenter on a site that reassesses science fiction films and TV shows of the last century. (Don’t ask.) The folks who run the site are big producers of corporate tie-in fiction – the kind of quickie novels Harlan Ellison once described as belonging to the “Spock Pops a Zit” school. So of course these guys are obsessed with the idea of “continuity,” which means combing through every line of dialogue in 50-year-old teleplays to make them conform not only to one another, but also to the innumerable offshoot films and series they have since inspired. I mention this because Disney’s new generation of Star Wars flicks has engendered all manner of handwringing on the part of obsessive fanboys who are simply devastated that said flicks are rendering piles of video games and animated series “non-canonical.” Faced with that sort of profound disillusionment, it’s hard to introduce an alternate viewpoint – like, say, NOBODY CARES. So remember to be gentle when you

check out Rogue One this week, and you hear the muffled sobbing of those who know none of this could have happened because Grand Moff Tarkin never wore a turtleneck. MEMORY OF A SCREEEEEEEE FESTIVAL A new local DIY fest offers up all the varying flavors of Southern heaviness

usic festivals are multiplying quickly in Florida these days.

There’s a new upstart joining their ranks this very weekend, but the inaugural Florida Is Loud event aims to fuck with your preconceptions of what a “fest” is and can be, both sonically and logistically.

Grassroots-organized and free of cynical branding or even more cynical curation strategies, FIL aims to show off all the various hues of Florida’s heavy underground (which is going pretty strong at this moment), from the unhinged punk of Nunhex, to Worsen’s blackened d-beat, to sludge fuckers Holly Hunt; representing the City Beautiful, you’ve got Autarx, Burn to Learn, Acid Baptism, Ad Nauseum and Deformed, among so many more. Taking place at Uncle Lou’s and Will’s Pub over a packed Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with 32

upward of 30 bands playing, Florida Is Loud is somehow being headed up by just one person: metal musician and DIY booker Glenn Ritchey.

Speaking to Ritchey just over a week before the event, he seems almost eerily calm about what he’s about to undertake, still approaching the whole event with enthusiasm and the requisite self-deprecation. “Calling Florida Is Loud a fest was mildly tongue-in-cheek,” he shrugs.

“Frankly, I just wanted to see my friends’ bands in one room over one weekend.”

What was initially intended as just a long weekend at Uncle Lou’s hosting fellow road buddies and noise-mongers whose paths Ritchey had crossed playing in either Ad Nauseum, Wrapped in Pale or Deformed quickly grew into something much bigger. Ritchey marvels, “I underestimated

WPRK just celebrated its 64th anniversary. The Rollins College station is the area’s truest embodiment of what the term “college radio” fully connotes.

On the local FM band, it’s far to the left in heart and ethos. This student-powered beacon is a community cultural treasure as an expressive outlet for the area’s youth and the only radio voice for truly interesting music. That this constellation of portholes into alternative, obscure and even freaky sounds and perspectives exists amid a sea of corporate banality in terrestrial radio is laudable. That it’s done so for this long is amazing. That it exists here in our community is manna. Forever stay you, WPRK. And get pumped now because next week will be TLU’s annual Undie Awards.

THE BEAT

The holiday season is upon us and, man, the spirit is needed like never before.

With a high-water-mark year of death and despair, we could all use a concentrated dose of escapism right now. That’s exactly what brought me out to see a performance of Nat King Cole songs and classic chansons françaises by Michelet Innocent (Dec. 4, Timucua White House).

Unfortunately, Monsieur Innocent was a mysterious no-show.

Most of the time, chance takes the form of vexing mishaps like this one seemed destined to be. Once in a while, however, it turns out some fortune. This night, it was a diamond named Carol Stein. When she walked into the White House, she, too, had the same plans as me: to take in a

nice show. But everything took a defining swerve when Timucua founder Benoit Glazer asked her to fill in for the missing artist at the last minute. That Hail Mary move would prove to be a major clutch play.

Given the circumstance, Stein deserved a grading curve due to both her inability to prepare and her totally game attitude.

But she needed no such charity. What the pianist-singer did technically onstage was weave together jazz, classical, holiday music and standards into a complete hourlong program. But, emotionally, she took chaos and spun it into pure delight.

The genius of her performance was that it connected us – to her, to each other – because, hell, we were very much all in the adventure together. It was that sort of night, and she lassoed the collective spontaneous energy of the room like a true showwoman. She even composed a song on the spot for a couple in the audience celebrating an anniversary, based on their life story. Your freestyle ain’t got shit on this.

Had I had the chance to do my homework on the artist that wound up onstage, I wouldn’t have been as surprised at how professional the performance was. Turns out, Carol Stein (carolstein.com) is indeed a pro – a studied and working musician who’s spent decades playing all over the world and currently holds entertainment residency at the Rose & Crown Pub in Epcot’s U.K. Pavilion.

None of that, however, diminishes the magic of what she did here. She took a freefalling plane of a night and commandeered Timucua’s beautiful house piano like Sully Sullenberger to bring it down to a triumphant and life-affirming landing. Stein saved the day with such grace, skill and charisma that she was met with a howling standing O. And she didn’t even know she was gonna do it. Just as beautifully, Stein herself was glowing under the spotlight, drinking in every bit of the extraordinarily, surprisingly special moment. It’s nice to live in a musical community where such talent just spills over.

But speaking of heroic, you should know how much of a rock star Benoit Glazer is. A mere week prior, he was badly injured to the tune of fractured wrist, ribs and skull(!). That he allowed this public show to still go on in his home is gracious enough. But even in his fresh and delicate condition, the man persevered and hosted it … like… a… gangster. Not only that, but he also showed off his hard-core wounds onstage. TWMT x TMD: Counterweight

Forward-thinking young groups Time Waste Management (TWMT) and TMD have each been doing exciting things in the art and music scenes. Now, they’ve joined to synergize those forces and create an intriguing launch of a potentially extraordinary collaborative series, Counterweight. The audiovisual serial will give a stage to more ambient and cogitative forms of music and visual art. And instead of the usual nightclubs, Counterweight will seek alternative venues more conducive to this state of mind. For the inauguration, they’ve chosen the sanctuary at the decidedly non-rock Audubon Park Covenant Church. The featured acts are very notable Orlando musicians in new guises: Ubik is the ambient project of Fortune Howl brain Bryce Linde and Temperament is the drone vehicle for Ad Nauseum guitarist Glenn Ritchey. The featured visual artist is local filmmaker Kate Shults, who projects new video works created especially for this show. In concept, setting and talent, this livestreamed debut promises to be an immersive experience. As this hellscape of a year draws to a close, we want to take stock of the good things that happened, few and far between as they may have been. One of them was the arrival on the scene of Artborne, the local art magazine that, as we wrote in August, “we didn’t know we needed, but are so glad to welcome.” Now Artborne launches what they hope will be a tradition each year, the Artborne Annual show. This year work by seven artists featured in the magazine will be installed at the Gallery at Avalon Island – in the future, they hope to raise that to 12. With a degree of (unintentional, perhaps) modesty, publisher Jonathan Yubi told us, “Having the art in front of [you] is so much more appealing than print.”

The tired trope that “print is dead” is, like, so over. Young, forwardlooking artists and writers know that there’s no more exciting way to put your work in someone’s brain than by putting it in their hands. And if you aren’t swayed by the artistic argument, think about this: Many of the most important philosophical and ethical battles in our nation's history, from the American Revolution to the Civil War to the fight for equal rights, have been fought via pamphlet or zine. So a visit to at least one of this weekend’s Zine Fest events would be more than worthwhile, citizen. From 2-5 p.m. Friday, the fest organizers host an afternoon of zine-making for young adults at the Orlando Public Library’s awardwinning Melrose Center; 1-5 p.m. Saturday finds more than 30 Floridian zinesters – spanning an incredible thematic and aesthetic range – selling their wares at Will’s Dirty Laundry Amphitheater and hosting a live, on-air reading broadcast on WPRK 91.5-FM. Now a decade strong, the annual holiday soiree Sweater Fest mixes Christmas kitsch with serious sonic cred for one glorious night that just gets bigger and bigger in terms of taste and scope. This year’s event crams a whopping 17 distinct musical acts into the intimate confines of the Spacebar across all manner of musical genres; the place is gonna be packed to the gills like an only child’s overstuffed Christmas stocking. Some of the names that jumped out at us immediately include Gainesville’s DJ groove/noise master Ironing, the lush dark psych of Sarasota’s Pleasures, Fiona’s outsider R&B jams, the infinite loop lullabies of Tiger Fawn, and RV’s downcast indie swoon alongside a host of worthies from all around the state. There’s something terribly endearing about bringing together likeminded creative people from all over Florida and jamming them into close quarters in an atmosphere of audio adventurism and seasonal revelry. Amahl and the Night Visitors OPERA

Dogs, as the old saying goes, are man’s best friend. But they’re also our most cherished genetically modified organism. Millennia of selective breeding has resulted in a rainbow of canine shapes, sizes and intrinsic behaviors. And throughout those thousands of years, the eternal question has persisted: “Who’s a good dog?” The AKC National Championship is an attempt to answer the question using a lot of rubrics and pageantry. During the day, dog enthusiasts can check out the breed-specific competitions, meet the breeds and check out a diving dog competition. The evening shows are more like what you see on television, with the Best in Group competitions and the illustrious Best in Show award. More than 400 different breeds in seven different categories trot around the ring to see which dog conforms best to an ideal standard.

If that seems unfair to you, remember that the judging, though done by experts in the breeds, is entirely subjective. So if your opinion of who’s a good dog differs from the judges, don’t fret. As local arts organizations get into the thick of the holiday season, with recent performances of the usual Christmas fare and the indefatigable Nutcracker, the smaller-scale but courageous Opera Orlando has its sights set on something different: Gian Carlo Menotti’s family-friendly short opera Amahl and the Night Visitors.

Inspired by a Renaissance depiction of the Adoration of the Magi, the ItalianAmerican composer wrote the first opera ever commissioned for TV broadcast.

“This is an opera for children because it tries to recapture my own childhood,” Menotti recounted in his notes for the original 1951 recording. “When I was a child I lived in Italy, and in Italy we have no Santa Claus. I suppose that Santa Claus is much too busy with American children to be able to handle Italian children as well.

Our gifts were brought to us by the Three Kings, instead.” Amahl tells the story of a fateful encounter between a shepherd boy and the Three Wise Men as they follow the star to Bethlehem. Starring Dalton Joseph and Tyler Kreusch in the title role and Polish-American mezzo Ola Rafalo as the Mother, this production by Eric Pinder includes a collaboration with the Orlando Ballet for the two performances at the Pugh and a five-piece music ensemble conducted by Robin Jensen. Sci-Fried Star Wars Show MUSIC

Most of us are excited about Rogue One, the new prequel to A New Hope that comes out this Friday. But chances are you’re not nearly as excited as the members of SciFried. The local nerd rock outfit, famous for metal jams centered around sci-fi and gaming fandom, has created a Star Wars-themed set just for the occasion. In addition to some new tracks from the band, the audience gets to hear unique parodies and original compositions from a galaxy far, far away. (And hopefully a metal version of everyone’s favorite sex jam, “Cantina Band.”) Plus, there’s a Star Wars costume contest for all of the cosplayers and a raffle for prizes including Rogue One tickets (like everyone there won’t have seen it already), Star Wars collectibles and merch from everyone playing the party. Perhaps you’re not the best person to ask, being a cis white man, but as a queer woman of color, the election had an extremely detrimental effect on my relationships with my white partners. I love and care for them, but looking at those results has me wondering why the fuck they didn’t do better in reaching out to their shitty relatives? I’m sick of living at the whim of white America. I’m aware this is the blame stage of processing, but it’s left me unable to orgasm with my white partners. I’m really struggling with what Trump means for me and others who look like me. I know my queer white partners aren’t exempt from the ramifications of this, but I wish they had done better.

Devastated Over National Election First and most importantly, DONE, you don’t have to fuck anyone you don’t wanna fuck – period, the end, fin, full stop, terminus – but we owe it to ourselves to be thoughtful about who we’re fucking, who we aren’t, and why.

But queer voters (a group that includes millions of people of color) didn’t just reject Trump, they did so by wider margins than some communities of color (groups that include millions of queers). While 14 percent of LGBT voters backed Trump, 28 percent of Latino voters and 19 percent of Asian-American voters backed Trump. (Only 8 percent of African-Americans voted for Trump.) The shitty and unfathomable votes of some POC – and some queers (WTF, 14 percenters?) – doesn’t get your white partners off the orgasm-killing hook. It’s possible your white queer partners didn’t do enough to persuade their families back in Clinton County, Iowa, to vote against hatred, fascism, racism and Trump. (Trump won Clinton County, Iowa, by 5 depressing points.)

Like you, DONE, I’m struggling with what this election means. I’m not going to tell you what to do, or who to do, or how to process the election. I am going to tell you to talk with all your partners about your fears and your anger, and I encourage you to do whatever and whoever feels right going forward.

If the GOP can send a huge prick like Donald J. Trump to the White House, why can’t we send our own pricks? My modest proposal: a coordinated effort to send thousands of dildos to Trump on Jan. 21 – enough dildos to make news and get under his thin skin. This coordinated effort would be supplied and vetted by responsible, women-friendly sex shops with a portion of the proceeds going to Planned Parenthood, LGBT charities and the ACLU.
