Florida confirms first sexually transmitted Zika case of 2017: The Florida Department of Health confirmed last week the state’s first sexually transmitted Zika case of 2017 in Pinellas County. The diagnosed person had not traveled, but recently, that person’s partner traveled to Cuba and came back ill with symptoms associated with the mosquito-borne virus, according to a statement from the agency. The state health department says it has alerted mosquito control near the area, and adds that no local mosquitos are spreading the virus. This year, the total number of Zika cases in Florida is up to 118. The virus can cause mild symptoms in those it infects, but it’s especially dangerous to unborn fetuses because it causes birth defects.

Florida man in shark-dragging video had previous case dropped by wildlife officials: Federal wildlife officials previously investigated one of the Florida men associated with the disturbing shark-dragging video in 2015 for an alarming set of photos that showed him gripping protected birds. The case was eventually dropped because although there were photos of the incidents, investigators with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service were “unable to establish venue or a timeframe when the photographs were taken, creating a possible issue with the statute of limitations,” according to a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service report. After the shark-dragging video went viral last month, Florida wildlife officials began investigating the men involved, but they have not identified them publicly. One of the men asked local officials for increased police patrols at his Palmetto home because of death threats.

Over the last two weeks, the failures and scandal of the first seven months of the Trump administration have become manifest and undeniable, focused like a laser for all the world to see: the failure to advance even the slightest health care reform, despite Republicans controlling both houses of Congress and the White House; the hiring of loudmouthed hedge-fund jackass Anthony Scaramucci as communications director and the subsequent resignation of press secretary Sean Spicer and firing of chief of staff Reince Priebus, followed by the firing of Scaramucci by new chief of staff John Kelly; the leaking of embarrassing transcripts of phone calls between Trump and world leaders, in which the president begged the Mexican president not to tell the media he wouldn’t pay for the wall and behaved like a petulant preteen while talking to the Australian prime minister; Republicans increasingly starting to distance themselves from the White House, including Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake, who wrote that his party has “maintained an unnerving silence as instability has ensued”; and the president’s rock-bottom approval ratings, despite a reasonably good economy and an unemployment rate of 4.3 percent.

Perhaps most alarming for the administration, last week brought news that special counsel Robert Mueller has convened a grand jury in Washington, D.C., to investigate the Trump campaign’s possible collusion with Russia during the 2016 election. Subpoenas have reportedly gone

Republicans gained power, by being against Obama and then against Clinton, not on the strength of their own (more or less absent) agenda. But you also need to inspire your own partisans – and if you win, staying in power and getting things done requires having a proactive agenda and inculcating a new crop of leaders. On both counts, the Democrats seem stagnant.

The recently unveiled “Better Deal” agenda marks a turn toward economic populism (anti-trust regulations, $1 trillion for infrastructure, $15/hour minimum wage, tax credits for apprenticeships and job training), a naked appeal to the suburban and Rust Belt whites who abandoned the Dems for Trump because they were “economically anxious” – and certainly not because Trump was peddling his own nativist and racist version of populism. It’s also a recycling of incremental-minded Democratic policy ideas from the last 20 years – hardly exciting stuff.

And then there’s the question of who’s going to be selling it. There are plenty of senators who will take a crack at the White House next time around, especially given how unpopular Trump is. Some of them might prove to be good candidates.

But the bigger problem is at the state level, where in most states – as is the case in Florida – Democrats have an extraordinarily weak bench and Republicans control the levers of power.

That’s where the movement needs to focus its efforts as Trump flails, on ensuring that after the inevitable collapse, progressives have the infrastructure and ideas in place to pick up the pieces and move forward.

As the saying goes, you don’t beat something with nothing.

Max Gracia died in the Orange County jail four days after being bitten by a police dog. Two years later, his family still wants answers.

illine Gracia had been trying to keep her only son alive since he was 16.

That’s when she sat Max Gracia down for their first come-to-Jesus talk. He wasn’t doing anything wrong at the time – he was just black. At the time, they were living near Washington Shores, one of the predominantly AfricanAmerican neighborhoods of West Orlando.

As a single mother raising a son and a daughter, Willine was particularly worried about Max, texting and calling him multiple times a day to make sure he was safe.

Born in New Jersey, he had grown up in

Two years ago at the beginning of August, his mother says she took a then-22-yearold Max to the courthouse to get his passport. He was supposed to leave for training in a couple of weeks for an airline that hired him.

It was the last time she saw him alive.

Days later, on Aug. 6, 2015, Max Gracia would be arrested by Orlando Police officers who accused him of robbing a Circle K convenience store with a gun. Gracia tried to escape by hiding in Lake Mann, but officers sent in a K9 after him. The police dog bit him multiple times before he was captured and taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center for treatment before being booked in the Orange County Jail. Willine Gracia says she didn’t immediately go see

neighborhoods where the police presence was less conspicuous, and his mother says he didn’t understand at first the limitations in Orlando.

“I remember when I told him he had come home from a friend’s house walking and didn’t have a cellphone,” she says. “I sat him down and I told him, ‘You can’t just go around here at night walking or on a bike.

The police are going to stop you.’ My son loved to debate everything, but I told him not to argue with them because he could get killed. You have to stay out of trouble because they don’t play fair, and the system is not designed to work for you. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to be out late like other young people, but as a black man, you can’t do that in this area.” orlandoweekly.com

her son because she was upset he was in trouble, but four days after his arrest, on Aug. 10, 2015, she went to the jail to put money in his account for food and to check on him – a friend had told her he was in pain. Detectives upended her life when they told her Gracia was dead, killed hours earlier by a fatal blood infection that stemmed from the dog bites.

After two years of searching for answers, Gracia’s family filed a federal lawsuit with Orlando attorney Mark NeJame last week against Orange County, alleging a “culture of neglect” caused health staff to fail to provide adequate medical care for Gracia, ultimately leading to his death.

“I’ll never know if he did [the robbery] because he’s dead, and he’s not here to defend himself,” Willine Gracia says. “My son didn’t hurt anyone. He hadn’t been found guilty. Let’s just say he did it – he should have gotten arrested, put in jail and had his day in court. Instead, he was in that jail screaming for help. Regardless of the charge or record, why was he being ignored?

“I don’t know what happened with the robbery, and I don’t care. My child shouldn’t have died.” he timeline for the death of Max Gracia starts around 2:04 a.m. on Aug. 6, when Orlando Police officers were dispatched to a Circle K at 401 N. John Young Parkway in reference to an armed robbery. Minutes before, store employees alleged a suspect had walked into the store wearing a white cloth to cover his mouth and holding a beige bag, according to the arrest report.

The suspect told one of the store clerks, “Give me all the money,” as he held a silver handgun at his waist. He then ordered the store clerk to open both cash registers and place the money in the beige bag. During the ordeal, store clerks remembered the suspect saying, “I’m sorry, but I got to do this,” repeatedly, according to the report.

After he had the money, the suspect then bolted from the store, going east on John Young Parkway. Less than a mile away, officers tried to stop Gracia on Robinson Street, but he fled from them. Officers discovered him hiding in the waters of Lake Mann and sent in a police dog after him. The arrest report doesn’t mention what the dogs did to Gracia, but according to the Orlando Sentinel, a separate report said he was “bitten multiple times on the inside and back of his upper left thigh.” The arrest report says Gracia struck the dog several times and continued further into Lake Mann.

After spending more than two hours in the lake, officers eventually arrived in a boat and took Gracia into custody on charges of robbery with a firearm based on victims’ statements, resisting an officer and interfering with a police dog. He was taken to 12

the Orlando Regional Medical Center for treatment and then booked into the Orange County jail.

The lawsuit says after Gracia was booked into the jail, he was seen by the medical director of the jail’s corrections health services, Dr. Robert Buck III, for his injuries.

Buck observed that Gracia had multiple severe dog bites and ordered Gracia be given Depakote for his seizure condition as well as pain medication and an antibiotic.

Buck also noted that the jail’s nursing staff needed to verify Gracia’s HIV medication to see if he had been “compliant,” and if so, place an order. However, the lawsuit alleges the HIV medication was never ordered for Gracia.

Through Aug. 7, nurses noted that Gracia was tolerating his medication and his wounds were being cleaned and dressed.

On Aug. 8 at 5:13 p.m., the lawsuit alleges Gracia complained to nurses that he had vomited twice, and he was given medicine.

On Aug. 9 at 6:35 a.m., a nurse changed the dressing on the wound on the back of his left thigh and found it reddened, with a large amount of bloody drainage. A few hours later, nurses noted that Gracia was complaining of dizziness and weakness, and ordered him to increase fluids. Later that night, around 9 p.m., the lawsuit alleges one nurse documented that she saw Gracia twisting on the bed and moaning loudly, saying he “can’t do it,” and sliding to the floor. Before the hour was over, another nurse noted that Gracia “refused” to get up for his evening medication. Nurses also noted that Gracia refused to follow corrections officers’ orders regarding a cell change and instead lay on the floor on his back “refusing all treatment.” The Sentinel reports Gracia was punished and faced disciplinary action because the jail’s nursing staff believed he was “ ‘faking or exaggerating the illness’ and inability to get up.”

On Aug. 10 around 5:15 a.m., a corrections officer told a nurse that Gracia was not breathing. The nurse found him lying flat on his back without a pulse or respiration. Nurses started doing CPR on Gracia until EMS arrived and took him back to the ORMC at 5:48 a.m. He was pronounced dead about 20 minutes later. The lawsuit alleges he was already dead in his prison cell before paramedics arrived.

An autopsy by the Orange County Medical Examiner’s office later concluded his death was a result of septic shock complicating the infected dog bite wounds on his legs, with HIV as a contributory factor.

“Due to the fact that the death of this individual is a result of injuries sustained during efforts to subdue him as he resisted arrest, the manner of death is homicide,” the autopsy states.

Orange County spokeswoman Carrie Proudfit says after Gracia’s death, Orange County’s Corrections Department launched ●

a critical review process and internal investigations regarding “the care, custody and cause of death to determine if any appropriate actions need to be taken.” During the investigations after Gracia’s death, one nurse resigned, while two nurses were given reprimands. The jail’s medical staff was also trained regarding the identification and initial treatment of sepsis and infirmary operating procedures that pertain to checking vital signs were updated.

The Orange-Osceola State Attorney’s Office reviewed the investigation documents provided by law enforcement in the case of Gracia’s death and decided not to file formal charges in June 2016, according to spokesperson Eryka Washington.

That decision was made under the previous prosecutor, State Attorney Jeff Ashton, and Washington says that decision has not changed under the administration of State Attorney Aramis Ayala.

“The care and treatment provided to decedent from Aug. 6, 2015, to Aug. 10, 2015, while he was incarcerated at the OCC/CHS deviated from the acceptable medical and nursing standard of care and rose to the level of deliberate indifference,” the lawsuit claims.

Proudfit says the county does not comment on pending litigation. Attorney Mark NeJame, who filed the lawsuit for the Gracia family in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida, says the family is suing for damages because they want to make positive changes at the Orange County jail so that this doesn’t happen to another person.

“It makes no difference whether somebody is in jail for littering on the sidewalk or multiple murders,” he says. “Once they’re in the care or authority of the jail they are to be treated humanely and to be provided proper medical care. That was by all indications not done in [Gracia’s] case, and all the more confirmed by the subsequent reprimand and resignation.”

Regardless of what Gracia may have done, his medical care was constitutionally guaranteed under the Eighth Amendment, which bans cruel and unusual punishment, says Jacqueline Azis, an attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union of Florida.

“Jails and prisons must provide adequate medical care,” she says.

“It’s unconstitutional to deny care to those in custody. It’s important to know the right to medical care belongs to everyone in custody, from the most heinous crimes to those presumed innocent, as was the case with Max Gracia. There’s always comments after these deaths about how ‘they shouldn’t have been running,’ or ‘they shouldn’t have been doing that,’ but what

they’re accused of doing is not important.

What is important is the prohibition against cruel and unusual punishment.” ax Gracia’s mother says she knows he wasn’t the perfect kid.

He had gotten in trouble with the law before and gone to jail on various charges including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, battery and a previous accusation of robbery at the same Circle K (though those charges were later dismissed). But Willine Gracia says that doesn’t justify how her son was treated before his death.

“I want people to know that there were other times my son got arrested, and he was known in jail for having a prayer meeting every night for the cellmates on his floor,” she says. “He used to call me and give me a list of inmate names for me to call their families because they don’t have money on the phone. I’d put extra money in his account so he could buy himself food to keep up with his medication and he would buy enough stuff to feed everyone in his pod. That’s just the type of person he was.”

Willine Gracia remembers her son loved his three dogs and attended church faithfully. Max Gracia found laughter in everything and was the life of the party. The void left in her life has left her with sleeping problems, anxiety and panic attacks.

“I have to live day-by-day, because there’s only so much I can take,” she says. “For the first year, I couldn’t even look at my son’s picture. … He was never found guilty and he was screaming saying he needed help. Why was he not heard? Police, doctors take oaths to protect and serve, and that’s not what was done here. They killed my son.” mcordeiro@orlandoweekly.com

he Florida Prize in Contemporary Art has emerged as an important stage for the voices of Florida’s contemporary artists, and it’s significant that it’s juried and curated here by the Orlando Museum of Art – it isn’t a traveling show come to town, or a received corporate gift. It is therefore one of the most essential exhibitions in Central Florida annually.

This year, 10 potent artists present (to varying degrees) deft social commentary via installation, video, sculpture, photography and good ol’ painting. Miami-based, Peruvian-born artist William Cordova won the Florida Prize this year, with Miami-based, Haitian-born photojournalist Carl Juste taking the people’s vote at the show’s opening-night party.

What all the art has in common is a distressing (or distressed) take on the sour times we’re living through. It’s a chicken-and-egg problem trying to figure out whether the current craze for dystopian art has a causal or a coincidental correlation with this rotting world of ours, but, as nearfuture apocalypse prophet William Gibson noted in a recent interview with New York magazine, “Much of the planet’s human population, today, lives in conditions that

many inhabitants of North America would regard as dystopian. Quite a few citizens of the United States live under conditions that many people would regard as dystopian.

Dystopia is not very evenly distributed.”

It’s not very evenly distributed throughout this show, either; but it’s there, coursing through the veins. The Florida Prize exhibition closes Sunday, Aug. 20, so if you haven’t already, you’ve got just a few weeks to witness it – if you dare.

RTR: Warnings. This year, I see cultural and social warnings everywhere in the art on exhibit. It’s like we’re all helplessly on some kind of horrid highway under construction, and the art here is like the “Caution – men working” signs telling us what’s coming.

JBY: Well, this is the dourest, most severe group yet. The Florida Prize started as an explosion of color and texture and movement, and each year it has gotten more intellectual. Some of the works this year felt almost bloodless, though most claimed to engage with blood or conflict or pain.

RTR: Our current period is very unsettled. In contrast, the art here looks very restrained. It invites you in, however, to tense Haitians waiting at a polling booth; a Syrian execution scene; a ghost orgy. The work surreptitiously draws you out of your comfort zone.

JBY: Let’s start with Rollins College art professor Dana Hargrove’s looming wall.

She described it to our reporter Esteban Meneses as a reference to borders, to Hadrian’s Wall protecting England from Scotland, where she grew up.

RTR: The huge scrap-cardboard installation has a street quality about it, in contrast to the studio-born, crisp and colorful building blocks inside the gallery. Hargrove’s cairns are exquisite, as always. They’re very architectural.

JBY: The rainbow cairns are very pretty and sharp and clean, but the battered cardboard wall has a grim quality that resonates with the rest of the show. Very good choice to install it as the opening piece.

RTR: Sharp-edged and clean also characterizes Chase Westfall’s work. The Gainesville gallerist and artist juxtaposes clean, static grids over terrorists, human and animal body parts. The grid imprisons them. “Blue Barricade,” for example, blocks the subject matter from the viewer.

And then the “Replica of Syrian Fence” is quite clean and nice, until he explains it is ISIS’ favorite execution fence. The effect is chilling. Or it could be. Things here are so pristine, there isn’t a spot of blood on it, so he has to tell you what it is.

JBY: I particularly appreciated “Untitled (Memorial),” a delicate pendant of that fence that interrogates the fetishization of violence in religion’s name – if it seems repugnant to wear a representation of that fence as jewelry, what does that say about crucifixes?

RTR: Heavy! So, Lisa Iglesias.

JBY: Iglesias’ interactive drawing/projection will grow over time as visitors add to it, and there are various other interventions with the drawings – video, web.

of conceptual process reminding me of so much of what we all do now: filter out all the noise in our presence – Facebook, TV, whatever – in order to make a decision.

JBY: Speaking of “an awful lot of conceptual” well, hoo-hah, what did you make of Miami artist Domingo Castillo’s two video screens on poles, attended by a clutch of cheap office wheelie chairs?

RTR: One screen flips through classical nude portraits with cheeky slogans, the other a history of citrus promotion in Florida. The two screens were interesting spatially, subtly interactive. The right eye sees beautiful female forms, while the left eye sees oranges, commercial images. The brain mixes them together visually but the signal was drowned out. It was like we have more pressing matters than Florida’s vanishing beauty right now. I don’t know; if television is a cold medium, this was definitely on the cool side.

JBY: Yeah – this piece left me cold. I wanted to like it; the Miami New Times named Castillo Best Emerging Artist a few years ago; but I felt like I was missing the joke. If an American Apparel store clerk were impregnated by a VICE article and the baby was a video installation, it would be this installation. Loved the cat photo, though.

RTR: In contrast, Mark Gerstein’s videos were interactive in a slightly more overt way. Several screens hold constantly shifting mosaics of self-portraits, family and nature scenes; as you approach it you activate voices speaking to you. The effect was subtle. I had to see it twice to get the full effect.

JBY: The interactivity was technologically clever; the way the viewer gleans different information by moving closer or away mimics transactions in human relationships.

RTR: Ralph Provisero’s “Maltryoshka,” “Ironsides” and “Iron Cross” series sort of capture the hidden menace in a lot of the work we see this year, with its reference to weapons. Nesting artillery shells into each other, as a play on the old Russian doll meme, ties together many references in this show to the world’s unsettled, edgy state. They’re warning us: Beware of what’s coming.

JBY: Provisero’s work was beautifully fabricated and certainly fit into the generally dark, militaristic tone of the show, but I didn’t feel like I learned anything here.

RTR: His “Dystopianutopia,” a beautifully

aged lead sheet cut in a disc, bookends the current obsession with upcoming armed conflict. It references Anselm Kiefer, whose lead airplanes and paintings looked backwards at German military weapons from World War II. JBY: I’m also beginning to be certain that OMA places the most overtly military or weaponry-themed works in the Lockheed Martin Gallery every year as some kind of inside joke. Or maybe there’s a dark conspiracy at play … ooh-woooo.

RTR: In the same room, Carl Juste’s photographs of Haitians in the throes of voting were striking and immediate. One feels the raw emotional energy of the people in the photographs. Juste’s work is a different kind of warning to those of us sleepwalking through the results of our own recent election. And, despite its journalistic quality, the photographs are beautifully composed

and printed, rich with color and clarity.

JBY: They showed the rawest emotion in the show, for sure. Aramis Gutierrez’s work is also emotional … but it’s a heightened performance of emotion, as opposed to Juste’s photojournalism.

RTR: Gutierrez’s paintings at first were a little too acidic for me. He uses fantasy and horror movie scenes as subject matter. His mauve-grays and umbers capture a twilight of sorceresses and creep kings, a kind of rogue’s world of mother’s-basement gamers caught in their own games. What took me in, finally, was a pathos that comes out through the various filters he puts over his work. He limits himself to movies, to a nontraditional palette, and to a brush style that’s somewhat hostile to portraiture.

Despite these self-imposed filters, you still connect with the people. You don’t like ’em, but you get ’em.

JBY: At first I recoiled – there was something off-putting in that skimpy brushwork

– but eventually it came to feel like a comment on the theatricality of these scenarios, like, see behind the scrim? And I was seduced by the weirdly inhuman skin tones, the exhalations of trance-inducing vapors and the goddesses’ feet delicately treading over corpses. Very decadent, otherworldly, fleurs-du-mal stuff.

RTR: And we come to Coco Fusco’s epic sea voyage “Y entonces se mar te habla (The sea will talk to you),” evoking a Cuban émigré’s escape by sea, as well as the return to Cuba to scatter her mother’s ashes. You sat in one of the inner tubes scattered on the floor and “floated,” I noticed. What did you think of the experience?

JBY: The darkened-room video installation is peaceful and soothing, until you realize this view lulling you is that of a desperate escapee. Floating in the ocean is lovely, unless you’re fighting for your life.

RTR: Fusco’s series of photographs of Havana’s Plaza de la Revolucion were haunting warning signs as well. “The Empty Plaza,” with no one to worship the sevenstory portraits of Fidel and Che, bodes ill for revolutionaries. More danger signs.

JBY: And last of all: Florida Prize winner William Cordova.

RTR: I appreciated Cordova’s care in creating the installation “The house that Frank Lloyd Wright built 4 fred hampton y mark clark (despues de Atahualpa).” You can walk right through the wood frame structure that re-creates the apartments where the two Black Panthers referenced in the title were shot.

It was crisp and clean and well-crafted. His series “transmissions: a more radical elsewhere,” “untitled (spiritual underground)” and “syncretism (paraq purinaykipeq)” were some of the best mixed-media work I have seen in a long time. They’re sensuous, almost lyrical compositions of painted images, scraps of paper, gold leaf, Pearl Jam lyrics and other items that tell cross-cultural stories. His masterful light touch gathers Peruvian and American perspectives; it’s very transcendentalist.

JBY: I most enjoyed the line of tiny drawings marching along the wall outside the two-by-fours of the house – I felt more humor and social engagement in them, but that’s a personal preference. Of course “The house that …” is socially engaged; it manages to contain a crackling fire of anger in its sere bare bones. For this piece alone, Cordova deserved the prize.

RTR: This year, the show seems to fit into two or three categories. Sculptures by Provisero, Westfall and Cordova symbolically reference war, terrorism, murder – but are so clean and pristine that the references are almost hidden. One longs for a spot of blood on Westfall’s gate or bullet splinters in Cordova’s wood stud walls; something, anything to mar the surface. This extends to Hargrove’s colored cairns, Iglesias’ drawings, and the videos by Gerstein, Fusco and Castillo. In Marshall McLuhan’s terms, they are “cool” and cerebral. Then, with Gutierrez’ paintings, Juste’s photographs of the Haitian election scenes and Hargrove’s cardboard box towers, you get a little more texture, more human element … stuff’s a little less cooked and more raw, but it is still in the medium-well category. There’s no rare steak dripping blood here, little of the happy accident. Accidents, whether happy or not, are bad. At least that is how I read this show.

JBY: Obsessing over the apocalypse is just a way of trying to control it, whether you’re celebrating it – truthfully or ironically – or trying to stave it off. Are we headed for endtimes catastrophe? Is it all just part of the eternal cycle? Or is it time to go into the forest and get it on until the end of the world?

Opera Orlando has kicked off its second

Since the very first installment

of this column nearly 10 years ago, I’ve been preaching that theme parks are more than a mere money-making diversion; they are an original American art form.

I’m pleased to report that the choir must not be empty, because I’ve never seen a 1st Thursday at Orlando Museum of Art as well attended as last week’s Disneysponsored Pandora: Celebrating the Beauty of the Natural World event.

I’m sure some of those squeezed into OMA’s galleries, which showcased concept art and artifacts that inspired Disney World’s new Avatar-themed expansion, may have been there for the free food – and with limitless samples of savory Satu’li Canteen beef bowls and Pongo Pongo pineapple lumpia, I can’t blame them. But I like to think that more were drawn, as I was, by the opportunity to see Disney Imagineering creative executive Joe Rohde, the driving force behind Animal Kingdom, talk about how he turned a movie about tall Smurfs into Mickey’s latest top attraction.

Once the microphone-mangling rattle caused by Rohde’s famous dangling earring was eradicated, he enthralled the Suntrust Auditorium’s capacity crowd with an intellectual yet accessible mini-masterclass in classical art and its influence on theme park architecture. When Rohde and his team of designers reach back to the old masters for solutions to their creative challenges, they don’t only look to Walt and his original Imagineers, but the great painters and sculptors of past centuries.

Peak crowds at the parks are receding as schools go back into session, so the coming weeks are as good a time as any to visit Animal Kingdom’s Pandora. When you go, pay attention to the design decisions that deliberately echo these artists, as revealed in Rohde’s own words:

That’s not easy.”

The Garden Theatre, now under the leadership of executive director Nao Tsurumaki, has announced auditions for the remaining shows in its current season. Director Aradhana Tiwari holds adult auditions for Rob Winn Anderson’s Southern gothic drama A Tennessee Walk Sept. 13, but girls age 10-15 can audition for the role of 12-year-old Bobby by video submission now until Monday, Aug. 14. Auditions for Disney’s Hunchback of Notre Dame musical, directed by Anderson, are Sept. 19-20.

Speaking of callbacks, local writer Thom Mesrobian’s Callbacks makes its Orlando debut Aug. 25-27 after being named a Best of the Fest at Tampa Fringe. Directed by former Universal Orlando show director Mark Hartfield, the seriocomic story set inside a theme-park dressing room stars Mesrobian with Danny Baynard and Sarah Lockard. Callbacks is one of the first productions at Theatre South Playhouse, a new venue in the Dr. Phillips Marketplace operated by Hillary Brook and Donald Gray.

A 40-minute presentation is hardly enough time to scratch the surface of Rohde’s artistic insights, and I came away with a deeper appreciation for his profound deliberateness in the aesthetic decisions that underpin Pandora’s picturesque peaks. But at the same time, he unknowingly underlined an issue that may make his freshly birthed project the last of its kind. Rohde’s slideshow was stocked with stunning scenery, but nearly devoid of people; a paragon (like Avatar land itself ) of postcard-perfect beauty, but lacking engagement with the human element.

The success of Universal’s Wizarding World suggests guests are less interested in impressive yet impersonal vistas than intimate, interactive environments. Disney’s decision to make narrow alleyways crammed with characters a key element of 2019’s Star Wars lands implies they agree.

Can Rohde’s classical conception of the Imagineer as auteur, carefully controlling the passive visitor’s vantage as through a picture frame, survive a future where every guest gets to be the star of their own saga?

Rasa’s focus is the best dishes from Malaysia’s hawker stalls and, for the most part, they succeed with such dishes as kari puffs, hakka noodles and “luse chicken,” greened in a marinade of cilantro and basil. The digs are slick, and the inviting bar begs for a cocktail program, though the sake, craft beer and wine crowd don’t seem to mind. There’s no questioning the skill and technique used to fashion the dishes served at this Winter Garden resto. The menu is seasonal, with a focus on fresh, local and sustainable ingredients (some grown on the roof). On the sweeter end, a giant raspberry macaron filled with vanilla gelato is the way to go, and ideal for sharing. Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature

over artist June Foray passed away recently, many obits noted that she had performed the dialogue for The Twilight Zone’s murderous doll, Talky Tina. Few recognized that she had also supplied the voice of Chatty Cathy, the actual real-world toy of which that Zone episode was a send-up. It’s difficult now to envision a time so free from brand protectionism; if the guy who does the voice of Teddy Ruxpin appeared on an episode of Westworld as a robot bear with a hard-on for homicide, the lawsuits would fly like guided missiles.

Which brings us to Annabelle, this generation’s most commercially resilient Doll That Wants to Rack Your Ass Up. Introduced in the Conjuring series, she’s now the star of her own successful spin-off franchise. Installment No. 2, Creation, is actually a prequel that means to establish exactly where and how Annabelle came into being in the first place. Our avatars in this process of discovery are a Catholic nun and some displaced convent girls, who arrive at the home of a bereaved toymaker and discover that there’s something very, very wrong with a wooden doll he keeps in the bedroom of his deceased daughter. How wrong? Well, try this salutation on for size: “I’m Satan, and I don’t like you very much.” (I swear, when you can hear me do it, it sounds just like June Foray.) (R) The Glass Castle To hear her tell it, memoir-

Intense poverty, an alcoholic father, a sexually predatory grandmother – basically, everything you didn’t see on the Full House reboot.

But then Trump refused to put his “x” on the dotted line, forcing the filmmakers to do some fairly extensive reediting. Seriously, guys, you really needed to retcon this? We’ll remember that the next time Al Gore tries to lecture us about disasters we didn’t see coming. (PG) Jab Harry Met Sejal Yes, the title translates directly into English as When Harry Met Sejal, but star Shah Rukh Khan swears this Indian rom-com about a guy and a girl who get to know each other on a long trip has “no similarity” to anything that might ever have happened between Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal. Riiiiight. So what’s with that scene of a call-center operator teaching a housewife in Tulsa how to fake an orgasm? (NR) The Lion King While we wait for the live-action remake of the Disney classic, the animated original has returned to theaters for a limited engagement in advance of its rerelease on Blu-ray and DVD. There are even separate bookings for standard and sing-along versions. But really, isn’t every movie screening a sing-along if you just put your mind to it?

St. Louis band Pono AM is a garagerock band, a fairly tradition-minded one even, but they’re much more than that tag typically entails. By not staying bound by the narrow punk straits that have predominated in this millennium, they keep their possibilities wide and stay fresh. What’s blossomed in their case is a sonic range that boasts a bright psychedelic pop ability and an exceptional amount of dimension for a young garage band.

Perhaps the surprising part, then, is that when this foursome flares up in one of their more charging songs, they come with more fire and kick than most of their more professedly punk contemporaries. When they push the pedal and rock, it’s a towering attack. And it’s not just basic volume and snot either. This is the kind of focused and fortified power that comes from acuity of song and heat-seeking chops.

What seemed promising on paper ended up being one of the best concert chances I’ve taken in a long time. There’s a shock of revelation any time you come across a band that’s simultaneously this complete and this obscure. At some point, though, one of those conditions has to give. Until then, Pono AM are ready.

Opening was curious local cowpunk group Pasty Cline. As their name promises, they’re a sort of garage-minded burlesque of country music that’s a little fucked and a lot of fun. It’s a freaky-tonk sound that often plays like warped and shredded cowboy songs, including maybe the most braying and off Jewel covers anyone’s likely ever heard.

When Pono AM push the pedal and rock, it’s a towering attack.

And it’s not just basic volume and snot either.

Pono AM boast the fortified power that comes from acuity of song and heatseeking chops.

Pasty Cline are not only interesting but also a pretty original voice around these parts. Look at them alongside Slim Walker and His Orchestra, who concluded the night, and you could maybe see the groundwork for a left-field country scene.

Now that would be interesting.

BLUE TOWER, ROTTEN STITCHES AND CONTROL THIS, UNCLE LOU’S, AUG. 2

The prime feature of a recent and diverse bill at Uncle Lou’s were a couple of touring Atlanta bands that are from the same geographical area but occupy different stylistic ground. Rotten Stitches play a strand of street punk that veers more toward hardcore than the sounds of the pub. They’re more G.B.H. than Sham 69, and they’re especially devoted to both the ethos and the aesthetic. Coming on with a bonanza of studs, bullet belts, hair color and anti-establishment politics, it’s close to the point of stereotype. But Rotten Stitches

were loud, fast and requisitely pissed enough to get the skinheads moving.

Next to the visual spectacle of Rotten Stitches, fellow Atlantans Blue Tower are total Plain Janes. But after a good listen, the torch and blister of their sound ended up being the real star of the night.

Although they, too, are a hardcore band, this lean, mean trio kick out a raw brand of punk rock that less strictly toes the traditional tribal lines. While the Stitches are 100 percent punk, the animal heart of rock & roll isn’t just more prominent in Blue Tower, it’s in full inferno. Even though they rush headlong with total and unrelenting velocity, they’re still wild enough to make room for some carnal guitar burnouts. No fashion, no bullshit, just pure, searing rock truth – that’s Blue Tower.

Opening the night was local ska band Control This. Oh, ska. Is there a genre more bastardized or more unfortunately hijacked than ska (or its direct ancestor, reggae)? Consider its modern popular conception. Thanks to its wide-ranging and commercially successful but often terrible Third Wave, the sounds and style that ska conjures in most minds has much more to do with the California of the ’90s than the Jamaica of the ’60s. Which sucks. That’s like your otherwise respectable family being judged solely by your trashy, illegitimate third cousin.

Control This, however, are refreshingly traditionalist in their take on the form.

They’re not soft punks or, worse, beach bros in disguise. They’re sincerely trying to champion the roots of ska, rocksteady and early reggae. And though they’re a band of few frills, they tread a virtuous path. baolehuu@orlandoweekly.com orlandoweekly.com

Local comedian Adam Avitable may have a penchant for material that plays up his imposing figure, but beneath the burly, bearded exterior is an intelligent and engaging writer. His blog has garnered national attention, and often veers far, far away from comedy to include bittersweet poems about past loves, or tributes to departed friends. This week, he premieres a one-man show that combines his comedic wit with his talent for storytelling at the Henao Center, something akin to a Spalding Gray monologue if Gray had been a regular at Dancers Royale. Bucking the conventional wisdom that concert promoters are more interested in their bottom line than bringing interesting sounds into town, there is a vanguard of younger promoters doing it for the sonic thrills, often to the detriment of their wallets. But whatever, can any of us really retire anymore? Case in point: Local Alex Thomas has put together this absolutely ridiculous lineup bursting at the seams with Southern young/loud/snotty quality. Orlando’s Forms join Tallahassee’s Spitball, Alabama’s Joyboy, Atlanta’s ultraviolence deathrockers Nurse and, excitingly, the fabulously fucked and grimey dirge dischord of newer Richmond, Virginia, project VV. Imagine an atonal hybrid of Crash Worship and Huggy Bear. That ugly.

Like that fictional city of Tipping in China, Orlando isn’t just a city in the navel of Florida. It’s a weedy British movie star, a Chevy SUV sold only outside the U.S., a Sally Potter movie starring Tilda Swinton. Also, according to local literary imprint Burrow Press, it’s “a power plant in Johannesburg, an epic poem, a celebrity mask used as a marital aid.” In their latest city-focused anthology, Other Orlandos, Orlando is anything but our little theme park-adjacent town as writers springboard off the city, mind-bending it into “new contexts and connotations.”

The book release party is being held at the Brewstillery, the beer and liquor operation that also hosts the Bear & Peacock Taproom in Winter Park. In the spirit of the book, we hope to see a bear and a peacock at the party. – Jessica Bryce Young

Local “garage pop doo-slop rock” band the Palmettes have gained no small renown for tearing it up on stages across Orlando – playing with the likes of Autarx, Wet Nurse, the Woolly Bushmen and the Wildtones. But they’ve been quietly amassing a body of work along the way, and they’re finally ready to release it as a demo – on the only logical format, the cassette, natch – and are throwing a party to mark the occasion. Early tracks online display sure-footed strut and sass, straddling raw garage rock and fun-loving doo-wop, which is gonna sound choice on spools of lovely magnetic tape. Expect to hear these nuggets given a ragged live airing. Ace Cafe, the downtown bar and restaurant devoted to car culture, has wasted no time in filling out their schedule with a mix of gearhead meetups and live music, providing something of an easygoing alternative to downtown’s often raucous nightlife scene. And this week, they launch a weekly night devoted to that cheesiest of guilty pleasures, the dueling piano show. Amy and Randy Keith, a husband-and-wife act, provide the pop covers and enthusiastic schtick every Tuesday. Forty years in and still glamorously grinding, Blondie – with the creative core of Debbie Harry, Chris Stein and Clem Burke intact – are on tour behind their 11th studio album, Pollinator. My boyfriend of eight months, K, and I are polyamorous. We started the relationship on that foot, and for a while I was the partner he spent the most time with. There have been ups and downs, but overall our relationship is solid and loving. However, recently we both started dating the same woman, L, and they have been spending more time together than with me due to my work schedule. They both reassure me that they love me and care for me deeply, but I am an anxiously attached person and sometimes I have panic attacks when they spend more time with others/themselves and fear that they’re going to leave me.

I’m working on becoming more secure via books on cognitive behavioral therapy, and I’m looking into in-person therapy.

This is my first serious relationship, but not his (I’m 22, he’s 35). And while K has been super patient with me, my worry and grasping is a point of friction in the relationship. K has told me he doesn’t want to be solely responsible for my sexual satisfaction and my need for constant reassurances that he cares. The anxiety has been flaring up most strongly concerning sex – we’re all switches, and K and L are both professional Dominants. I feel neglected if K doesn’t penetrate me but he penetrates L, or if L gets to penetrate K via a strap-on and I don’t. He’s very good about voicing what he desires, while I’m learning to speak up despite feeling like I’m just being needy and grasping again. Committing yourself to therapy is a good idea, BELOVED. Everyone should commit to working on their emotional and mental health. You and your therapist can start by re-evaluating whether a poly relationship is right for you in practice. In theory, you understand poly and you may want a poly relationship. But as someone with anxiety issues and hang-ups about all sex acts being divided up equally, poly may not be right for you, or it may not be right for you right now. After a little therapy (or maybe a lot), who knows?
