Every week between now and the one-year anniversary of the Pulse Nightclub shootings, Orlando Weekly will profile a person killed on June 12, 2016. This week: Christopher Andrew Leinonen.

Paula Lupton says she would describe her friend Christopher “Drew” Leinonen as a renaissance man.

The 32-year-old knew a little bit of everything. As a Seminole High School student, he started a Gay-Straight Alliance student chapter, which earned him the Anne Frank Humanitarian Award. The University of Central Florida graduate worked as a licensed mental health counselor by day and in his free time explored cinema, photography, history, politics, vegetarianism and the intricacies of playing Dance Dance Revolution. Lupton

says Leinonen loved to go to the Enzian Theater with friends to watch classic movies like Citizen Kane and Vertigo, and then over a nice dinner, ask everybody what they had thought.

“He was amazing and witty,” Lupton says.

“He had the ability when he was talking to make you feel like the only person in the world. He would do anything for the people he cared about. He loved life, and he was always laughing.”

He had a soul mate in Juan Guerrero, 22, says his friend Saffy Johnson. Johnson remembers Leinonen was very loving toward Guerrero, but also very protective of the younger man, always checking to make sure he was OK. They died along with 47 others at Pulse on June 12. On July 27, his mother, Christine Leinonen, captured a nation as she spoke at the Democratic National Convention. In between advocating for common-sense gun policies, she told thousands of delegates that her son was a “big Hillary supporter,” whose belief that “love trumps hate” was etched in his DNA: His paternal grandparents met and fell in love at a Japanese internment camp during World War II. “Christopher was my only child,” she says.

Cops arrest donut-dusted driver for meth During a traffic stop, Orlando police arrested a man for drug possession after they mistook the sugar-glaze crumbs from a Krispy Kreme donut for chunks of methamphetamine, according to the Orlando Sentinel. The New York Times reported in early July that Florida Department of Law Enforcement data shows more than 20 percent of the time, substances initially identified as drugs are not. What’s most surprising about this quintessential Flori-duh arrest is it’s coming from people who should know what a donut dust-up looks like.

Grayson’s Senate campaign spirals downward U.S. Rep. Alan Grayson, D-Orlando, and his campaign for the U.S. Senate was hit last week by scandal after scandal. First, Politico released allegations by his ex-wife, Lolita Grayson, of multiple instances of domestic abuse (which Grayson vehemently denied).

Then the Democrat threatened a Politico reporter with arrest for asking him questions about the alleged abuse. And then some of his campaign stuff quit, progressive donors dropped out, and Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid called him an “absolute fraud.”

Gov. Rick Scott grows a heart, maybe State Rep. David Richardson, the only openly gay lawmaker in Florida, told the News Service of Florida that Scott expressed support for gay rights after the Pulse tragedy, saying if his grandchildren were gay, “he would want them to be treated with dignity and respect and have their rights.” We’re thinking that was probably communicated in a very hushed whisper. mcordeiro@orlandoweekly.com

A

t night, the stories won’t let Robin Maynard sleep.

Her nightmares are augmented by the recollections she’s heard from survivors who managed to escape death in the early morning hours of June 12 at the gay nightclub Pulse. One girl was hiding in the back of a bathroom with six or seven other people, and as the shooter mowed them down with bullets, they fell on top of her. She heard them dying around her as she hid underneath them for hours. One young man held a housewarming party at his first apartment with his friends earlier that night, then spontaneously suggested, “Let’s go to Pulse.” Five of his friends did not make it out. Another woman was trying to outrun the shooter when, as he pointed his gun at her, a man stepped into her path and took the bullet for her.

They’re images seared permanently into survivors’ heads as they try to piece their lives back together, and now they’re in Maynard’s head, too, as she tries to help them.

Maynard is part of the nonprofit Pulse of Orlando, an organization endorsed by the club’s owners and the only one that has been giving immediate financial assistance to victims’ families, club employees and survivors of the mass shooting. Despite millions of dollars being donated to several organizations after the massacre, including the OneOrlando Fund, that money has yet to be distributed because officials are taking the time to avoid fraud and to make sure the funds are allocated fairly. OneOrlando, which has collected $17 million, plans to distribute funds Oct. 1.

In the meantime, Pulse of Orlando has helped by distributing more than $50,000 to needy recipients in smaller checks. Other homegrown initiatives are also trying to stand up for survivors, like Adopt Orlando, a group of artists using their talents to help raise money for individual survivors of the massacre, including family members left behind.

Stephanie Husted, of the United Way, is in charge of managing the permanent Orlando United Assistance Center. Husted says they’re making some improvements on communication with the FBI. Agency officials come once a week to meet with individuals who haven’t been processed and help OUAC piece together who’s a survivor and who isn’t.

Husted says OUAC has been helping secure rent and mortgage assistance for survivors, turning lights back on through a partnership with local utility companies and getting people counseling services.

She says survivors have also told them they need help with groceries and copays for prescriptions. Businesses have donated their services to OUAC, such as a moving company that helped a survivor move back in with his mom.

Husted says the assistance center doesn’t distribute donations and has had to use current community resources to help people who visit them.

“There’s no separate pot of dollars specific for Pulse survivors,” she says.

“Those resources had previously been limited on a good day. … The community has really been pulling together to make the best possible of a bad situation.”

Survivors need money for cell phone payments, to prevent eviction from their apartments or homes, to keep their electricity on or to stop their cars from being repossessed. Many don’t have insurance and can’t afford medications or even bandages for their wounds.

The primary stop for many survivors has been the Orlando United Assistance Center at 507 E. Michigan St., which has been run by Heart of Florida United Way since July 11. In the initial week after the shooting, city and county officials set up a temporary Family Assistance Center at the Camping World Stadium.

In total, 956 people filled out forms for help at the stadium, but officials have not had access to much of that information, says Cassandra Lafser, a spokeswoman for the Mayor Buddy Dyer’s office. The FBI was in charge of intake at the center, but has not yet shared the information they collected with local officials, Lafser says, because the investigation into the shooting is still open and active. The assistance center has had to call the FBI to verify the identity of survivors. A spokesperson for the FBI did not respond to Orlando Weekly’s request for comment. orlandoweekly.com

The Broadway cast of Fun Home

It’s been two months since the

Pulse Nightclub tragedy, and while Orlando’s wounds are far from healed, the rawness has finally receded enough to recognize some silver linings to that calamitous cloud. Shortly after the shooting, I wrote about the healing role of Central Florida’s theme parks. Likewise, late last month America’s theater community stepped up with a world-class double feature demonstrating the power of performing arts to transform ugliness into unity. If you wanted to experience the best musical theater in the world on July 24 and 25, the place to be wasn’t the Great White Way or West End, but our own Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts.

It began on Sunday night with the concert staging of Fun Home featuring the entire current Broadway cast and crew – including playwright Lisa Kron, composer Jeanine Tesori and director Sam Gold – who flew down (with funding from Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and Wyndham Orlando) during the New York production’s dark day to perform. Their efforts raised $113,000 for the benefit of Equality Florida, which received 100 percent of the evening’s proceeds for distribution to Pulse victims, their families and others affected by gender discrimination.

I had resigned myself to being unable to attend the show in NYC before its final bow on Sept. 10, so when the benefit was announced I snapped up seats, despite being blissfully ignorant of Fun Home’s content beyond a bare outline. That turned to be a smart decision, because even stripped of all sets and props I found the story and music almost unbearably moving, and perfectly apropos to the moment. Based on lesbian cartoonist Alison Bechdel’s bestselling graphic memoir, the adaptation explicitly addresses the destructive danger of internalized homophobia, entwined with the universal human issue of parentchild interaction.

While the topicality of Fun Home’s themes was a draw, the real reason I was so

Last month, America’s theater community stepped up with a world-class double feature demonstrating the power of performing arts to transform ugliness into unity. eager to attend was Michael Cerveris, who I first saw as Tommy in the 1993 Broadway version of the Who’s rock opera, and again enjoyed as Sweeney Todd in John Doyle’s 2006 revival. Cerveris didn’t disappoint in completing my personal trifecta, showing Orlando exactly why he earned the Best Actor Tony for playing Bechdel’s closeted father with his excruciating aria “Edges of the World.” But it was the trio of Alisons – Emily Skeggs, Gabriella Pizzolo and especially Beth Malone – who proved the biggest delight. Despite not looking alike, the three actresses’ emotional energies ably embodied their shared character’s evolution from adolescent to adult.

My balcony seats for Fun Home were worth every penny, but they drained my disposable funds only a day before From Broadway With Love was announced for the following night. Directed and produced

by Kenny Howard with Joyce Arbucias, Andrea Canny, Van Dean, Sarahbeth Grossman and musical director Michael J. Moritz Jr., the benefit concert sold out in an hour based on its all-superstar lineup.

I was only able to attend thanks to the assistance of local playwright-producer Michael Wanzie, who helped me gain entry to the press room, where I rubbed elbows with legends Chita Rivera (still doing a mean Fosse strut at 83) and Andrea McArdle (who told me her daughter had asked to go to Pulse during their Orlando visit only weeks before the attack).

The show itself was like an idealized awards ceremony without any of the boring

speeches, consisting of an unending parade of Broadway’s biggest voices interpreting inspirational showstoppers, supported by the Orlando Philharmonic and a hundredplus-strong choir of local singers. Every number was a knockout, but highlights included Jessie Mueller’s rocking invocation of Carole King on “Beautiful”; Brian Stokes Mitchell’s seat-rattling recitation of “The Impossible Dream”; Wilson Cruz and Voces Latinas’ a cappella mashup of “Over the Rainbow” and “For Good”; UCF alumni Justin Sargent’s sing-along “Don’t Stop Believing”; and Darren Criss’ acoustic “Sugar Daddy,” delivered to a burly auction winner seated on stage. But for me, the peak was watching Blue Star and the cast of VarieTease dance to Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue,” proving Orlando talent can proudly stand on the same stage as Manhattan’s best.

By the time the full cast finale of “What the World Needs Now” arrived around the three-hour mark, I was raring to pre-order the Blu-ray recording, which I’m assured will be remixed to repair the egregious microphone problems that plagued the production; ironically, the sound engineer was an out-of-town import instead of an experienced local tech. Still buzzing from being around so many great artists, I broke my usual pattern and paid a visit to the VIP after-party at the Abbey, arriving in time to witness the once-in-a-lifetime sight of a dozen Tony winners dragging their own luggage off a bus. I was too tongue-tied to say much to my idols as they snacked on sushi, but I did made a point of snapping a photo with MC and pianist Seth Rudetsky, if only to prove we are different people.

(You’d be surprised how many times I’ve been asked.)

In the end, we’d all give anything to make the Pulse shooting un-happen. But barring that, I can’t imagine a more fitting consequence emerging from that agony than Broadway’s brightest lights coming to our town and learning that Orlando feels just like home. skubersky@orlandoweekly.com orlandoweekly.com

College Park happenings: The Pie, offering “fast-fired pizza,” will move into the old Yogen Früz space on Edgewater Drive sometime this month; the (relatively) new owners of Jade Sushi & Asian Bistro have given the restaurant a complete makeover to go along with the new name (it used to be known simply as Jade Bistro); and Jimmy Johnston (Prato, Maddey’s Craft & Cru, Osprey Tavern) has been named executive chef at Outpost Neighborhood Kitchen.

Kadence is the official name of the Kappo owners’ long-rumored “Project X.” It opens in the former Winter Park Beer Co. space in November, and will seat just 20 people for two different types of of omakase-style lunch and dinner.

Bulla Gastrobar will bring a little elBulli flair to Winter Park when it opens this fall at Lakeside Crossing. Chef Miguel Rebolledo, who spent time working under Ferran Adrià at the legendary elBulli as well as with José Andrés at Bazaar Meat, will work with Bulla Winter Park chef-partner Felix Plasencia on developing the menu.

2 ounces gin 4 ounces tonic water lime wedge ice

Pour gin and tonic over ice in a rocks or highball glass. Rub lime wedge around glass rim, drop into drink and serve.

2 ounces gin 1/2 ounce tonic syrup * 1/2 ounce simple syrup 1/2 ounce fresh lime juice ice lime wheel fresh rosemary (optional)

Combine the gin, syrups and juice in a blender with a cup of ice and blend until slushy. Pour into a tall glass or Mason jar and garnish with a thin slice of lime and a lightly bruised sprig of rosemary. * I used Strong Tonic syrup, but I’m brandagnostic (though Jack Rudy is also good). This may be an item you’ll have to order online.

here’s a reason gin and tonic is the quintessential summer drink, and it’s not just the crisp, refreshing flavor: It prevents malaria.

Well, so thought the 19th-century British officers stationed in India who took to mixing their prescribed quinine (in the form of “tonic water”) with their daily ration of gin to make it more palatable. It’s since been found that, though quinine is an effective prophylactic against malaria, the amount found in a typical cocktail or three’s worth of tonic water isn’t enough to be effective.

But, while everyone’s freaking out over Zika, you can claim to be drinking this Remixed G-and-T for its parasite-suppres-

sant properties (note, though: It has none).

The truth is you’ll be drinking it because nobody can turn down a frozen drink in the summertime. Between the global popularity of the gin and tonic and the almost equally widespread love of a slushy when it’s hot out, this Remix will make you summer’s most acclaimed host.

I got around the problem of blending carbonated tonic water (not a good idea) by using a tonic syrup, commonly used by finicky mixologists who want to adjust bitterness levels to their exacting requirements.

I added some simple syrup because frozen things always need the flavors bumped up (the colder the liquid, the less you can taste it, which is why you should definitely be suspicious of anything labeled “always serve chilled”). And if you dread cleaning the blender jar after a party, remember: A standard Mason jar will fit right into your blender’s blade assembly, and serve as a classic summer glassware choice besides.

Saint Anejo Mexican Kitchen + Tequileria Saint Anejo’s south-of-the-border fare is better than your average Tex-Mexeria’s. Two superbly flavored (and flattened) ribeyes in the carne asada, for example, or a sweet and smoky (but not too sweet and not too smoky) mole rojo, are populist favorites that swing and connect. Skip the guac and start with the Mexican sweet corn, especially when corn is in season (not summer). A sizable selection of margaritas, sangrias, cervezas and cocteles are also offered.

King Bao Bao, those steamed sugar-dough buns stuffed with all matter of crispy, fatty, meaty and crunchy fillings, are the new draw, but so is the low price.

While the buns themselves aren’t fresh here (they’re bought frozen, sorry), the meat they cradle, be it kimchi fried chicken, Korean short rib or braised pork belly, satiates. Vegan and vegetarian options are also offered (try the bao filled with a sweet potato croquette). Tater tots are the sole side accompaniment, though, if you have room for dessert, fried bao with sweet fillings are available.

Canvas Restaurant & Market The strokes aren’t always fancy at Canvas, but dishes like burrata with caramelized stone fruit, Floribbean grilled shrimp salad, oak-charred octopus and succulent apple-bourbon braised short ribs steal the scene. A burger fashioned from short rib and brisket is extraordinarily moist; accompanying fries are no afterthought.

So why would a musician who largely invented a new branch of the rock family tree try to explain his singularity to interviewers? At the beginning of the movie, Zappa states, “In order to do press, there’s no way that I can sit here and be a normal human, because being interviewed is one of the most abnormal things that you can do to somebody else. It’s two steps removed from the Inquisition.”

The possible answer to why he submitted might show up when Zappa speaks in the early 1980s about traveling abroad to realize his self-funded classical recordings with Kent Nagano conducting the London Symphony Orchestra. It required cash on the barrelhead for him to produce these noncommercial works, and he needed to do press as both the invested producer and the talent. Nine Lives A few years ago, there was a spate the future of all other DC movies? It could actuof movies about driven businessmen who neglected their wife and children, only to become trapped in a supernatural situation designed to show them the error of their ways. From The Family Man to Click, the movies kept coming and the Twilight Zone scenarios in which the protagonists found themselves got more and more outrageous. And then one of them ran for president.

I mean Frank Underwood, natch, because House of Cards’ Kevin Spacey is the star of Nine Lives, the latest riff on the stop-and-smell-theroses school of homiletic nightmare fantasies.

Spacey’s character, Tom Brand, has to undergo perhaps the most traumatic ordeal of the genre: An inveterate cat hater, he’s imprisoned in the body of his family’s new feline pet. Yep, it’s the first time Kevin Spacey has ever been inside a … nope, I can’t do it. Not even me.

The issue now is whether this beaten-todeath subcategory of family films really has nine lives. Does an emotionally deadbeat dad still have drawing power if he’s injected with a good dose of Grumpy Cat? It probably isn’t a good sign that last spring’s chat-centric Keanu was a big ol’ flop, indicating that adults are just fine getting their funny Felixes for free over social media. Hey, it beats watching the kids. (PG)

ally be the case with Suicide Squad, the trailer to which was one of the few nearly universally enjoyed aspects of seeing Batman v. Superman in a theater. Of course, it probably helped that the trailer allegedly included every light-hearted moment in the movie; the reaction was so strong that Warner Bros. ordered reshoots to emphasize “more of what’s working” (my favorite Hollywood phrase of the year).

How much you can do in four months to make a feature-length film match an unrepresentative few minutes is the billion-dollar question that hangs over SS, in which the fate of the world rests in the hands of a bunch of supervillains, most of whom are second-string even by fanboy standards.

Once upon a time, we were snarking that the cinematic versions of those characters looked like Halloween Horror Nights scareactors deprived of their chainsaws; now we’re wondering if they can save the summer and the DC Cinematic Universe. If the flick underperforms like every DC project since The Dark Knight Rises, there’s a good chance the company’s entire superhero slate post 2017 will be wiped off the board. And that’s a lot of responsibility for Harley Quinn to shoulder. Good thing she has all of those voices in her head to help. (PG-13)

He draws from his life experiences and speaks often of the musicians who have influenced him. While Maxwell ultimately hopes to achieve a sense of timelessness with his music, he doesn’t believe that he has earned that title just yet.

“Timelessness isn’t about being a sex symbol,” he explains. “It’s about enacting social and economic change. It’s about asking, what does being an AfricanAmerican mean? What does it mean to be black? To be a man?”

On race in America, Maxwell has his reservations. ”I’m troubled by the things I’ve seen,” he admits, commenting on some of the recent high-profile incidents involving racial discrimination. The singer credits these experiences and more as inspiration when crafting his music.

In blacksummers’NIGHT (aka NIGHT), the upcoming final album of the threepart series, Maxwell hopes to give fans an inside look at how the he views the world.

“It will probably be more sensual [than SUMMERS],” he explains. “But there will without a doubt be a political slant to it.”

He reassured us that his intention is to inform and express, not to influence. “I didn’t want to be too heavy-handed,” he asserts. “I’m not a lecturer. After a seven-year hiatus, the singer who is widely credited as one of the front runners of contemporary R&B and neo-soul is back again with new music, a new ’do and new ideas. Orlando Weekly caught up with Maxwell a week before his show at the Dr. Phillips Center to talk music, politics and what the future holds for the proverbial playboy.

Maxwell has been resting easy since his voluntary departure from the limelight. He reappeared briefly in 2008 at the BET Awards, taking the stage during an Al Green tribute with a fresh single and a fresher haircut. The singer’s mane was as recognizable in the mid-’90s as his music; when he took to the stage without the long wild locks and thick sideburns that fans had grown accustomed to, it was clear both Maxwell’s look and music had matured as he reached his 30s.

Any concert stop in town by

Sleep is notable on its own. Add the fact that their latest was a Pulse benefit (July 26, the Beacham), though, and you have something for the history books. Other touring and local acts have graciously donated their hard-earned proceeds to the cause. But making the legendary California stoner-metal band dope times two is that they join the saintly few by traveling all the way here to do a non-tour, ad hoc special event.

Also historical is that this is probably the first time anyone has ever called Sleep “saintly.”

Besides a two-set performance, they also organized and held an auction of exclusive items like instruments, bikes and wakeboards signed by royalty of the rock and extreme sports worlds – people like Mick Fleetwood, Tony Hawk, Lance Mountain, Mat Hoffman and local wake pioneer Scott Byerly.

Because of the big-ticket items on the block, I didn’t expect many to be able to drop that kind of scratch, but people were shelling out hundreds of dollars per item. The magnitude of this city’s largesse continues to floor me. These are my people here. In fact, the benevolence was so widespread that I learned the company through which I have, of all things, my life insurance was matching the show’s proceeds dollar for dollar. And to put the exclamation point on the night, the members of Sleep signed one of their cymbals before they left the stage and auctioned it off on the spot, adding a $650 cherry on top of the funds.

This night ruled, Sleep ruled, this community ruled and all was on the mend in this cruel fucking world.

the heaviest of metalheads rally this vigorously and in this number to aid the victims at a gay club is a world I want to live in. This is love. Thank you, Sleep, for being a beacon. For everything. And thanks, Orlando, for answering the call with open hearts and pockets.

THE BEAT Now, I’ll report on benefit shows but I don’t really review them. As a general maxim, I don’t critique because it’s just not appropriate. These are rallies for causes and not performances for the sake of art. Sleep could’ve gotten up on stage and completely botched their set and this campaign of goodwill would still be angelic. However, I will absolutely note if anything truly exceptional happened.

And to Sleep’s credit as musicians, they completely blew the house down in a slo-mo landslide of thrilling tonnage like masters of the universe. Testament to the beautiful destruction that three intent stoners and a wall of amp stacks can wreak, the sheer atmospheres they were laying down sat like an elephant on my dome, crushing me so hard that the only thing keeping me breathing was the pure exhilaration.

So to hell with critical distance. The aggregate impact of the band, the cause and the spirit in this full house was just too tremendous to downplay. This night ruled, these guys ruled, this community ruled, and all was on the mend in this cruel fucking world. The unforgivable crimes notwithstanding, a world where

Kool Keith was originally scheduled to take the stage here earlier this month but some flight issues forced an 11th-hour cancellation. We probably shouldn’t have expected anything involving perhaps the oddest ball from the golden age of hip-hop to go normally anyway. Well, he made it here for the make-up show (July 27, Will’s Pub).

Ever oblique and proudly strange, the Bronx MC is an original gangster of the left-field rap that’s practically de rigueur in indie circles. The fact that this out-there, shapeshifting weirdo has operated for decades with no apparent regard for constancy or convention makes him as much miracle as hero.

But here’s his deft little trick: Despite his outsider ways and sometimes inscrutable thoughts, the man’s flow – crammed with complex meter and watertight execution – is technical enough to pass old-school muster. He even showed off some legit freestyle chops.

Hey! Listen! This concert is music to Legend of Zelda fans’ ears, literally. The beloved game series’ instrumental soundtrack is brought to life by a full orchestra synced to a highlight reel that pulls from everything from Link’s Awakening to Wind Waker. Since many fans have spent a good portion of their waking lives hearing these pieces over and over and over again as they try to get through that darn Water Temple, expect to hear a lot of the audience humming along on the down low. “The world ended while we were playing cards.” Zachary Linville’s first novel, Welcome to Deadland, hews faithfully to the established zombie-pocalypse tropes, which may have something to do with how it beat out all others to win Nerdist’s first publishing contest and got itself a hardcover release on Inkshares. Nerdist, the fanboy empire headed by Chris Hardwick (tiny, excitable host of AMC’s Talking Dead), officially premiered the novel at San Diego Comic-Con this month, but this local pre-pub appearance is in honor of the fact that the author is a UCF grad and the book is set in Orlando. A ragtag group of college-age zombie fighters hacks their way through the infected city in this first of the Deadland series, from the university, through the housing developments and even up from Miami, and they’re all heading toward … well, you’ll get no spoilers from us, but only a non-Orlandoan couldn’t guess the magical place they’re all going to meet up. – Jessica Bryce Young

Uncomfortable Brunch Presents: Visitor Q FILM

It’s kind of surprising that a Takashi Miike film hasn’t made it into the lineup of Uncomfortable Brunch yet, but they’ve sure picked a doozy to start with. Visitor Q’s plot, such as it is, revolves around a Japanese family – dad, mom, and teenage son and daughter – who are visited by the unnamed stranger of the title. While the family’s pre-existing history of incest, prostitution and videotape is disturbing enough, the visitor inspires a new level of depravity that we can’t accurately describe. Suffice to say that it involves breast milk and someone getting their dick stuck in a corpse.

Miike often uses styles that replicate documentaries or home movies, which serves to heighten the unease that watching this family go about their business causes. If you’ve ever heard the stereotype of the Japanese being into some weird sex stuff, this brunch will not divest you of that impression. – TM noon | Will’s Pub, 1042 N. Back in the heady, sweltering days of the Florida post-hardcore renaissance (circa 1997-2001), Miami’s Poison the Well held a place near the top of the metalcore pantheon. They gained a devoted following on the strength of their doomy riffs, screamy vocals and super-moshable breakdowns: the perfect soundtrack for a generation of angsty youths with nothing to do but go to matinee shows. This show kicks off an extremely short (only five dates) reunion tour for the band. Formed by hardcore vets who were tired of teenage angst, and by the sound of it, seemingly tired of the chore that is life, Richard Gage Allison and Noel Mateus channeled an epic reserve of dramatic ennui into their new musical vehicle, Pawns.

And Pawns channel a whole new world of inner damage. They’re postpunk as far as they share the undeniable forward propulsion of a Joy Division or Chameleons but Pawns are gothic with a capital G: the almost impossibly histrionic baritone of vocalist Allison, guitars like little knives, even a rhythm section that seems poised for a nervous breakdown. Think of Sisters of Mercy, She Past Away, Anasazi, or early Siouxsie and the Banshees. Pawns know that there’s a beauty in surrendering to the void. I can’t believe this is why I’m finally writing you. My husband is using Pokémon Go as an excuse to stay out until 5 a.m. with another woman.
