In “Disney workers unions seek wage hike as ‘path out of poverty,’” news writer Monivette Cordeiro reported on a push by the Service Trades Council Union, a consortium of Disney unions, to get their members up to a living wage. The STCU says 23,000 cast members in the union make less than $12 an hour, and out of those, 8,000 earn $10 an hour. @Joni Eden I’ve been saying this for years.

The wage problem at Disney bleeds through the entire area. @Jay Markell At the end of the day, I worked at Disney and with infrastructure and transportation costs the parks itself don’t make as much as you think. If they get their pay increase Disney will cut jobs and give more to the university and high school students. Sorry folks, forced minimum wage hurts more than it helps. Not saying cast members don’t deserve it.

@Lindsay Harrison Disney spent over $100 MILLION compensating five people in 2016, double what they spent in 2012. What’s blue, yellow and white, and the newest symbol of our community? Orlando commissioners approved a new flag Monday to represent Orlando at City Hall and other city-owned venues. The new flag is a blue-and-white design featuring the Lake Eola fountain inside a large, golden “O.” This flag is an update on a previous design submitted by artist Tim Eggert, a local graphic designer for the engineering firm Kimley-Horn. The city received more than 1,100 submissions from locals and artists all over the world when it started its flag design contest in February.

Orlando’s current flag was adopted by the city council in 1980 and depicts the Lake Eola fountain and several unidentifiable high-rise buildings.

When asked about Twitter posts by President Donald Trump that call for a ban on transgender people from the military, U.S. Navy veteran Gov. Rick Scott sidestepped questions by saying he was unfamiliar with the policy. “I do know the President’s worried and focused on the safety of all Americans, and I do know that he relies on his military leaders to make decisions,” Scott told reporters. In the past, when asked why he hasn’t signed an executive order protecting state employees against anti-LGBTQ discrimination, Scott’s office has said, “Florida is a state that does not tolerate discrimination of any form.”

Disney workers unions seek wage hike as ‘path out of poverty’: Disney labor unions representing 36,000 full-time and part-time Disney workers announced last week that they will seek wage increases as a “path out of poverty” for its members. The consortium of Disney unions, known as the Service Trades Council Union (STCU), says 23,000 cast members in the union make less than $12 an hour, and out of those, 8,000 earn $10 an hour. Under the current contract with Disney, a worker making $10 per hour wouldn’t reach a living wage of $15 per hour until 2028. In a statement, Disney World Resort Vice President Jacquee Wahler says the company is planning an employment package that is “fair and equitable for the cast and the company.”

Florida regulations will be reviewed after video of shark dragging goes viral: Gov. Rick Scott called for state wildlife officials to review regulations after a disturbing video surfaced showing three men violently dragging a live shark behind a boat going at high speeds. After the video went viral, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission began investigating the men involved. “The brutality and disrespect shown to this animal is sickening and I am sure that you share my outrage over these individuals’ heinous actions,” Scott wrote in a letter to FWC Chairman Brian Yablonski. “I know that FWC law enforcement works to protect all of Florida’s wildlife and we need to make certain they have the tools to ensure Florida has the best fisheries in the world.” mcordeiro@orlandoweekly.com orlandoweekly.com

AHF OPENS NEW CLINIC IN ORLANDO TO ADDRESS LOCAL HIV EPIDEMIC

A

recently opened HIV health care center in Orlando plans to address the rising number of new HIV diagnoses in Central Florida.

Local elected officials joined members of the AIDS Healthcare Foundation last week for a ribbon-cutting ceremony in front of AHF’s new clinic in Orlando at 1701 N. Mills Ave., next to the Orlando Immunology Center, a private clinic specializing in HIV, hepatitis and STD care.

“Florida ranked first among the 50 states in the number of HIV diagnoses last year,” Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer said. “The people that are being infected in Orange County are up 28 percent in 2016. More than 90 percent of new HIV infections could be prevented by testing and early diagnoses. So, I am so pleased to be here and be part of this opening of this center that is so needed here in Orlando.”

In 2015, Florida had the second-highest rate of HIV diagnoses out of all the states among adults and adolescents in 2015, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Orlando metro area ranks sixth among U.S. cities like Miami and New Orleans for the highest rate of new HIV diagnoses – in 2015, Central Florida added 614 new diagnoses to the state total of 4,849 cases.

“This is something that’s very near and dear to my heart,” Orlando Commissioner Patty Sheehan says. “Between the ages of 25 and 30, I lost over half my friends to AIDS, and this is something that we’ve been fighting for three decades. One of the greatest frustrations in my life is that we are No. 1 in Florida, and we shouldn’t be.”

AHF, which is the largest global AIDS organization, says it plans to decrease new infections in Central Florida by providing free HIV testing so people can know their status, including through the use of an HIV mobile testing van; providing immediate care for those who test positive, regardless of their ability to pay; and sup-

porting patients through follow-up care to make sure HIV-positive people stay on track with their medications and ultimately have healthy lives. AHF also plans to offer pharmacy services to patients through an on-site facility. The majority of the foundation’s revenue comes from working with pharmacies, though AHF says 96 cents of every dollar earned at the AHF pharmacy supports the foundation’s global and national HIV-AIDS services.

“AHF Pharmacy is excited to expand our pharmacy services in Florida through our new location in Orlando,” AHF chief pharmacy officer Scott Carruthers said in a statement. “By making pharmacy services available adjacent to our AHF Healthcare Center, we strive to make accessing the lifesaving medications our patients need as convenient as possible to encourage adherence to their treatment regimens and drive down the rates of new HIV infections in the region.”

Michael Weinstein, president and CEO of AIDS Healthcare Foundation, said he wanted to dedicate his remarks to Jahqui Sevilla, a Pulse survivor who rode on AHF’s float dedicated to the victims of the massacre at the gay nightclub in the Rose Bowl parade. Sevilla, 20, was killed earlier this year in a car crash.

“The war against AIDS has not been won,” Weinstein says. “There’s still a lot of work to be done. We will pay for complacency. I think that this building, this complex and all of you can be a shining example of our continued commitment to fighting this epidemic.”

The Orlando clinic offers patient appointments Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., which can be scheduled by calling 407-204-7000. The GLBT Center of Central Florida, Planned Parenthood and several other locations also offer confidential HIV testing in Orange County; find a list at orangecountyfl.net.

nder the blazing sun, protesters rallied last week in front of U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio’s downtown office, chanting “Shame! Shame!

Shame!”

They were there to show their dissent against Republican senators like Rubio who voted Tuesday to open debate on the repeal and replacement of the Affordable Care Act. Two days later, GOP Senate leaders failed to get enough votes to pass a “skinny repeal” of Obamacare called the Health Care Freedom Act, which would have repealed the individual mandate and the provision requiring large employers to cover their employees. The Congressional Budget Office estimated the latest bill would leave 16 million Americans uninsured by 2026 and raise premiums by about 20 percent. Rubio and Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson voted on party lines Friday on the Republican health care overhaul bill, but Republican Sens. Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, and John McCain of Arizona cast decisive votes against the bill.

“Rubio does not want to look those people in the eyes and tell them they cannot afford the medicine that saves their lives,” Melanie Gold, an organizer of Orlando’s protest, told the crowd. “He doesn’t have the guts to stand there and say to somebody, ‘You are going to die because that medicine that you cannot get for your heart transplant, which cost you $100,000, will no longer be covered.’”

Gloriann Gaston, a social worker at a local emergency room, told protesters that proposals to give states block grants for Medicaid would actually hurt Florida. While proponents say it would give states more flexibility to handle their Medicaid programs, critics say the proposal would cut Medicaid spending by a third over the next 10 years, according to Kaiser Health News.

says. “Hospitals are also very expensive because it’s critical care, it’s not outpatient care, People are using hospitals as a solution … but you can’t follow up at a hospital. You need to have outpatient providers, and you can’t access that without insurance in this country or without adequate community programs.”

Meanwhile, Rubio, who has been skipping town hall meetings all year because activists will “heckle and scream” at him, has taken to making his arguments against Obamacare where it’s safe – at his desk, in front of a camera. Florida’s junior senator has figured out the best way to address his constituents without really having to listen to their reactions is on Facebook Live. Cue a swarm of angryface emojis.

After the Senate’s vote on Tuesday to open debate on the repeal and replacement of the Affordable Care Act, Rubio took to Facebook Live Wednesday morning to address an article in the Palm Beach Post that stated Florida tops other states with about 1.5 million people enrolling into Obamacare and an added 4 million adults and children in the state on Medicaid. Rubio argued against reports that Floridians will be kicked off Medicaid under the Republicans’ replacement plan.

“There’s nothing in this law that’s going to change that,” said Rubio, water bottle within arm’s reach. “Florida didn’t expand. A lot of states expanded their Medicaid coverage to include people that don’t qualify under the traditional Medicaid. Florida never did that, and so, there’s no one going to be kicked off. … I don’t care how much some people in the press ignore it.”

But Politifact has rated Rubio’s claims “mostly false” because the Senate bill would curb “the rate of spending by the federal government over the next decade and caps dollar amounts and ultimately reduces the inflation factor. Those changes will put pressure on states to make difficult choices including the possibility of cutting services.”

Ouch. Maybe Rubio should attend one of these town halls and get some more information.

t’s hard to believe we’ve been in a world without Billy Manes for 10 days now.

It doesn’t seem like a possibility, but for those who don’t already know: Billy Manes, writer, activist and longtime columnist for Orlando Weekly, passed away just after 4 p.m. on Friday, July 21, at the age of 45.

Manes’ impact on Orlando Weekly – and Orlando – is difficult to overstate. Though he started in classified ad sales, Manes made a rare leap into editorial. His prescient “B-List” column took on minor celebrities in a way now universal throughout the web; it segued into the nightlife column “Blister,” which in turn gave way to his cutting front-of-the-book local political column, “Happytown.”

When Billy ran for mayor of Orlando during a special election in 2005, he became the first openly gay mayoral candidate in Orlando history. Though the special election was canceled, “Billy Manes for Mayor” bumper stickers and T-shirts are still a prized commodity for many an Orlandoan. Two of the searing cover stories (among so many) that he produced are, in his inimitable style, very personal ones: “Mantrimony,” his

2007 chronicle on assembling all the legal paperwork that would add up to a marriage for himself and his partner Alan in Florida pre-Obergefell, and “’Til death do us part,” in which he detailed Alan’s suicide and the ways in which the lack of marriage equality complicate gay lives after a partner’s death.

Manes left Orlando Weekly to take on the role of editor-in-chief of the LGBT-focused Watermark on June 22, 2015. After the mass shooting at the gay nightclub Pulse on June 12, 2016, Manes became the voice of a grieving community, appearing on MSNBC and NPR. On the one-year mark of the tragedy, Manes reflected in a Watermark column that Orlando achieved the remarkable feat of pulling different people in the city together after Pulse.

“This was no time to hide behind your couch cushions and cry at the television broadcasts,” he wrote.

“This was a time of people connecting – arm and arm, blood to blood – in the manner that societies do when tragedy strikes.”

Now I’m left without my oldest friend in Orlando. When I started at Orlando Weekly as copy editor in 2003, Billy was already ensconced

here as a fabulous columnist. As I despaired over untangling his sentences and deciphering his trademark verbings, he got curious about just who this Chicagoan messing with his words was. So he invited me to brunch. At that brunch I met Billy, Dave Plotkin (my other longest-term friend here) and my boyfriend of 13 years. So I owe Billy plenty – not just for my happiness, but for all the things he taught me. How to honor the author’s voice while smoothing out their grammar. All sorts of British pop-music magazine slang (“graft?”) and Southernisms I’d never heard (“bow up?”). How to make yourself get off the couch and go even when you don’t want to. How to defeat the haters by hiding absolutely nothing.

And never to leave the house without putting on one fabulous piece.

After Billy parted ways with Watermark last month, I hatched a plot to get him to come back to Orlando Weekly, in some capacity. I couldn’t believe we might be so lucky as to work together again. But I never got to discuss it with him in real detail; he went into the hospital before we had a chance to talk about it, and he never came out. For that I will be eternally sorry, but I’m so very orlandoweekly.com

grateful I spoke to him twice in the days before he stopped being able to talk. His voice echoes in my head.

As I put the final touches on this piece, the news is full of two things: the defeat of the “skinny repeal” (oh how Billy would have loved that moniker) and the upcoming total solar eclipse. Maybe it’s a common impulse in the wake of loss to see connections everywhere to the one you’ve lost, but I can’t help seeing both of these as emblematic of Billy. Health care?

Justice is served, for the moment, but we’ll have to keep fighting hard. And the eclipse? A star has been blotted out, but only briefly – the light lives on and will shine on us again.

There’s not enough paper and ink in the world to print remembrances, tributes and words of love from everyone who loves Billy. So, because Orlando Weekly was his work home for almost two decades, here are some memories from people who worked with him. If you’d like to make a gesture in memoriam, his husband asks that contributions be made to the causes closest to his heart: the Pride Fund to End Gun Violence, Planned Parenthood of Southwest and Central Florida, and Organize Florida.

Remain in light.

Billy Manes died just after 4 p.m. on Friday, July 21, at the age of 45, due to complications of severe pneumonia. His husband, Anthony Mauss, made a statement to Orlando Weekly regarding his partner’s death on Sunday, July 23.

“My husband, Billy Manes, passed away peacefully on Friday afternoon surrounded by his family of friends. He had been ill for a couple of weeks with what turned out to be pneumonia, and by the time we sought medical attention, it was too far advanced. He died due to complications of his condition leading to organ failure.

“Billy Manes was a walking fucking miracle, a man who fought ferociously to create a world where justice, equality and respect were

the cornerstones of his community.

He loved Orlando. He knew what was possible here in this sprawling mass of ex-pats, misfits, introverts, seekers, party people, bookworms, performers, makers, artists and friends. His driving force was love.

He loved you, Orlando, and he knew of your love for him. He fed off it; it sustained him. He would have fought proudly for each and every one of you forever. Unfortunately, his body had other plans.

“So … grieve, Orlando, grieve, but don’t forget to laugh, create joy, and love each other wildly. That would honor him.”

Manes and Mauss were married Feb. 14, 2015, and had been close friends for 17 years. Here he tells us the story of their meeting.

Those are the first words Billy Manes spoke to me on what, in hindsight, might be deemed our first date. But it wasn’t. Billy was with Alan and I was with my first husband. From the moment our friend Taylor made us stand next to each other, Billy and I were friends.

There was an instantaneous connection, an openness, a tangible raw power to our friendship. These were the hallmarks of Billy’s relationship to almost everyone he knew. It was empowering just being near him.

I remember thinking I was devoting a lot of time to getting ready for what Billy himself described as “goofing around downtown.” I chalked it up to the fact that he was already kinda famous and I knew walking into a room with him meant that people would be looking at me as well. So I made an effort. Billy always demanded you make an effort – he believed that if you didn’t, what was the point?

Why make a scene if there was nothing to look at; why all the going out if there wasn’t something fun or interesting or challenging? Billy loathed mediocrity.

So I was nervous, that first time.

Sliding into his car through the passenger-side window, I was nervous that I might disappoint this man whose car door wouldn’t even open.

(And there was a packet of powdered “cock soup” on the seat, a joke gift from his co-worker Jessica.) “You look cute,” he bubbled enthusiastically. “And you look like Luke Duke,” I responded flatly. He laughed.

He laughed at my obvious joke authentically, he laughed in a way that told me that he knew I knew I had just made a lame joke, he laughed because I had made an effort. I was hooked. I knew I was going to need orlandoweekly.com

more of that laughter. I knew I was going to have to make an effort with him for a very long time.

I don’t remember what exactly we did that night. I could look it up – no doubt it’s on file somewhere in the Weekly archives of his “Blister” column, but that was unimportant.

Maybe it was a bar opening with male strippers, maybe it was a dive somewhere in Bithlo, maybe it was some club event … I don’t remember.

What I do remember was that I had never felt so alive, so excited to be out in the world, to be open to the endless possibilities of the night. I remember the electricity that surrounded him.

We got home late. Probably later than someone who was in a relationship with someone else should.

As I extricated myself from his car like some existential rebirth, he said, “That was fun, what are we doing for my column next week?”

Next week!? I get to do this again next week! I just stood there giggling in my delight. “I’ll call you tomorrow.”

He leaned out the passenger-side window and reached out to me.

“Don’t forget your cock soup!”

he time when we first met.

The time when we met again, and you barely looked up at me from behind your Macbook screen. You had applied for the job. I got it. I wasn’t sure what you’d think about me, a stranger coming to your town to take over the paper you’d dedicated years of your life to. We chatted, and it turned out we had some things in common. A few days later, you called me and invited me to your birthday party, and I knew it was going to be OK. That time when we went out to meet for a drink for the first time, so we could talk about Orlando and you could help me get familiar with the terrain. One drink at the Peacock Room turned into an hours-long soul-baring session where we plotted

our futures and planned to take over everything. Then we hit Will’s Pub, Parliament House and Bar-BQ-Bar before ending up dancing like fools to ’80s music at I-Bar. That first time we struggled with editing one of your stories – you had a voice, you had an opinion, you had a vision. We argued some, but it was OK because we made it a better story.

That time we realized that we made a pretty kickass team.

That time you learned that after a lifetime of being a Duran Duran fangirl, I had never gone to a concert.

You vowed to take me to see them – and you did. Twice. Both times we screamed like teenagers until we could hardly talk.

All of those times when we would go back to your house after work or a night out and play concert videos as loud as we could and sing along to

them until we were exhausted. All of those times.

That one Easter Sunday, late at night, when I got a phone call telling me something was wrong – you were OK, but Alan wasn’t. I didn’t know what happened, but I flew downtown to find you sitting on the sidewalk, crumpled in grief. Alan had shot himself in the backyard. He was gone.

All of the times we sat in your house after that. How do you ever recover from that? It would not be easy. But you did.

That time you bought a house of your own.

That time you fell in love again.

That time you married the most wonderful man in the universe. He loved you so deeply. You deserved to be loved like that. You deserved to be happy.

That time you were afraid to tell me that you had accepted a job as editor of Watermark. You were afraid that I’d be mad. I wasn’t mad – I was excited for you. Of course you would be the editor of Watermark. Of course.

That time when you called me before dawn to tell me that there had been a shooting at Pulse. I thought that maybe it was a bar fight or something we could talk about more tomorrow, at a more reasonable hour.

But you knew it wasn’t just a bar fight. You knew that the world as we knew it was going to change forever.

You wept. You covered it. You became part of the story, and then they covered you. No, nothing was the same for you after that. It couldn’t be.

That time you were let go. You felt like a failure. I wanted you to know that you were anything but. I was proud of you. I was excited for your future. You could take some time to think, plot your next move. I knew there were bigger things ahead for you. You told me you’d been feeling unwell, but you’d figure something out when you’d had some time to rest.

That time you were in the hospital, just a few days later, and the nurse on duty played “Barbie Girl” on his phone. You were weak and exhausted, but you sang along anyway. We laughed. I told you I’d see you tomorrow.

Then, somehow, you were gone.

How did we not know each other all of our lives? How did we not meet sooner? I rage at the unfairness of the world that would grant us such a rare and wonderful friendship, only to take it away on a whim.

my life would have been if we’d met when we were young.

There are different versions of this world where we did have more time, but they aren’t the same.

In one of those worlds, we were in high school together. You were friends with the cheerleaders, and I was just a townie stoner, so we didn’t talk much because your friends didn’t like my friends and we only saw one another a couple of times after high school, then again at a reunion, and we never kept in touch except for a few likes on Facebook.

In another, we were college roommates, and I decided to abandon tradition and asked you to be my best man at my wedding. But then I had kids, and you were working on a book and traveling, and we drifted apart.

We had some fond memories, but we went in different directions.

In yet another version of our alternate lives, we were introduced by mutual friends, but it was loud and we all drank too much and went home underwhelmed with our evening. We never saw each other again.

In those other worlds, maybe we were happier, or more successful. Or maybe we weren’t. But we never saw Duran Duran in any of those worlds, and we never visited divey hotels in St. Augustine with musty carpets.

We never snuck into the pool in the middle of the night and took so many trips down the icy-cold waterslide on a dark, windy night that I was afraid you might develop hypothermia. We never danced at I-Bar or wept for 49 people killed in a senseless shooting at a nightclub. Those other worlds could never be as rich as the world we shared. In those worlds, I never wept for you.

Erin Sullivan has been the public relations administrator for the Orange County Library System since March 2016. She came from Baltimore in 2010 to take over as editor of Orlando Weekly, while Billy Manes was senior staff writer. She and Billy were regular contributors to WMFE 90.7 News, where they launched the “From the Pages of Orlando Weekly” segment that still airs twice a week. Erin and Billy became very close friends during their time working together, and their friendship may have become even stronger after they both left Orlando Weekly for other pursuits.

T

he funny thing is, Billy wasn’t supposed to run for mayor. In retrospect, he was the obvious choice, but at the time, he wasn’t our plan A. The idea that germinated in the Weekly’s newsroom was to illustrate absurdity – the snap special election following Buddy Dyer’s indictment in 2005, and the city’s elites rallying behind former Mayor Bill Frederick – by being absurd. And we wanted to do that by running Ian Monroe, then the Weekly’s know-it-all IT guy, against Frederick, to make the once and future mayor have to debate our smug, ponytailed candidate. Only

Ian didn’t meet the city’s residency requirements. Neither did the other names atop our list.

So we circled back to Billy Manes.

Wouldn’t it be hilarious, we thought, to see our flamboyant, profane nightlife columnist put on a stage with uptight suits? No one told Billy this was all supposed to be a joke.

I mention this because, for the first three or four years that I knew Billy, I knew him only in the shallowest sense, and I suspect that’s how much of Orlando knew him, too. To me, he was the life of the annual Best Of party, the debauched host of the 2001 Orlando Music Awards, the platinum-haired,

brittlely skinny libertine who always had a drink in one hand and cigarette in the other, who knew way more about boy bands and Duran Duran than any grown man should and who had a bizarre fondness for turning proper nouns into verbs.

But I came to learn that was only a character he played, a public persona, someone he referred to in private as Billy Fucking Manes (as in, “I’m Billy Fucking Manes, don’t you know who I am?!”). It wasn’t an act, nor was it disingenuous. It was certainly part of who he was. But it was also only a piece of a much more complex, much more beautiful whole.

Billy threw himself into that campaign in a way none of us expected.

He studied issues and boned up on the intricacies of city government. He spoke out, even though he hated public speaking. He raised money. He cared. It didn’t matter that he wasn’t going to win or that the Sentinel’s editorial board condescended to him or that the haut monde rolled their eyes when he entered the room; he wanted to do this thing and do it right, to represent people like him who were all too often overlooked in the political sphere.

It changed his life.

In the story he wrote about that campaign, Billy painted this evolution as an Eliza Doolittle transformation, but I don’t think that was exactly right. Billy always cared about these issues, about Orlando, about people; he was always smart and engaged. But now he had a platform, and he used it.

The election never happened, of course. But Billy parlayed the campaign into a staff writer gig at the Weekly, where we worked sideby-side for three years and became close; then in 2015 he parlayed that into his editor’s gig at Watermark, where he became one of the most influential LGBT voices in the state.

And as he grew into these roles, I – and Orlando – got to see more of the complete Billy: the resilient fighter who turned his partner’s suicide into a poignant push for marriage equality; a champion of the marginalized; a plugged-in political animal; a community leader who wore the pain of Pulse on his sleeve; and a prolific and articulate proponent of orlandoweekly.com

progressive values.

He was all of these things, and also Billy Fucking Manes: witty, droll, brimming with love and life and light, beloved everywhere he went.

That’s not to say Billy didn’t have his demons, or that there wasn’t sadness behind that endearing smile. I was with him in some of his darkest and most despondent moments, especially after Alan died, and I saw him at his most vulnerable.

But I also got to see him rise out of despondency after an unspeakable tragedy. I saw him fight for years in the courts for what was rightfully his. I watched him find love and happiness again in Tony Mauss, his wonderful husband. I watched St. Elmo’s Fire with him the night before his wedding, just the two of us and his dogs, which he joked passed as an old-men bachelor party. I saw him buy a new house and settle into an almost-contented middle age, surrounded by friends who adored him and would walk through fire for him.

That campaign changed his life.

And, in a way, it changed mine.

Because really getting to know Billy, as that campaign and Billy’s years as my Weekly partner in crime allowed, meant growing to love Billy. He became one of my closest friends, like my own brother. Billy, for all the tragedy and strife he endured, had an irrepressible light and an intractable commitment to making the world – or at least his corner of it – a little more compassionate, a little more loving, a little more joyful. His life was a reminder to me that I need to be those things – compassionate, loving, joyful – no matter what was going on around me.

I’ll miss him every day. Orlando will miss him. The world will miss him.

Goodnight, Billy, you sweet, sweet man.

M

ost people know Billy Manes ran for mayor of Orlando in 2005, but few remember how much this altered Orlando’s political history and the direction of Billy’s career.

On March 10, 2005, Mayor Buddy Dyer was indicted by a grand jury on arcane ballot-handling charges.

He and three others were accused of breaking a law that had never before been enforced. Gov. Jeb Bush immediately removed him from office, triggering a special election to replace the mayor until he was convicted or exonerated. Whoever was elected “temporary mayor” could possibly serve for weeks, or even just a few days. If Dyer were convicted, another election would then be needed to replace him permanently.

This wacky, seven-week election attracted the attention of Orlando Weekly editor Bob Whitby and writer Jeff Billman, who urged Billy to consider running. Billy’s husband, Alan,

supported the idea, and I was recruited to serve as the campaign manager.

One week later, Billy was filing papers at City Hall and, in his own words, “trying to notarize affidavits that prove my legitimacy, even though I’ve not been on a lease for the past 10 years.” With that, Orlando’s best-known humorist and nightlife columnist entered the race for mayor.

While nearly everyone predicted a joke campaign, Billy began preparing in earnest to run and win.

He had name recognition (as he approached Orlando Sentinel reporter Rich McKay for an interview at a downtown restaurant, a shirtless passerby screamed, “Billy Fucking Manes for fucking mayor!”), but he also had a mind for politics and a years-long list of civic grievances. Most of his writing had focused on pop music, celebrities and after-hours culture. But as he became more comfortable being a candidate, another side of him began to emerge.

Always political, always passionate

to call out the routine injustices that cause suffering and inequality, Billy had been named “most likely to run for political office” by his classmates at Boca Raton High School, though openly gay public officials were rare in the early 1990s. He was also a functioning alcoholic with a past history of drug abuse, which he put out in the open, keeping very few secrets from his devoted readers. When a mysterious caller threatened to reveal his past driving citations to the media, Billy laughed nervously and published the details first.

Running for office gave Billy a platform, and a new confidence through which he could advocate for Orlando’s most vulnerable residents. He began winning over crowds.

“Again, I’m at the podium. Again, I’m nervous. But this time, I actually know and believe what I’m talking about,” Billy later wrote in a chronicle of the race in Orlando Weekly called “Citizen Manes.”

“The feeling in the room is that I could actually win this. And I’m actually happy about it.”

Two weeks before the special election was to take place, the charges against Dyer were dropped, ending the election. The celebration of Dyer’s return to office was held in the very same hotel ballroom where Billy had done so well that morning. At the orlandoweekly.com

party, Dyer complimented Billy on his race, and his own campaign manager told Billy she would have voted for him.

The roller-coaster experience gained Mayor Dyer national attention and reignited his own career.

He became noticeably healthier, and more open and accessible to the public. Once considered to be contentious with his critics, Dyer also befriended the blond-waif journalist who ran for his seat.

“Billy always tried to kiss me,” Dyer told a gathering after Billy’s death. It was true, and many officials tried to kiss him back. He was inexplicably loved by the very politicians he broiled alive with his words. U.S. Rep. Alan Grayson summarized Billy’s career change in the 2014 Congressional Record, noting that the one-time “pop-cultural raconteur and nightlife columnist … ran for Mayor of Orlando in a special election which was later cancelled. Nonetheless, Manes caught the political bug, and soon became a full-time news reporter for Orlando Weekly.”

“Billy broke barriers,” said U.S. Rep. Stephanie Murphy after his death.

In a speech where she honored “the first openly gay mayoral candidate in Orlando’s history,” Murphy said “our nation lost a committed, passionate, and fierce advocate for equality.”

For the rest of his too-brief life, Billy would write almost exclusively about local and state politics, gaining national attention for his insightful coverage of how public policy affects people’s lives and health care.

“He wrote about PrEP, the disproportionate risk of syphilis among gay men, and health insurance,” the Sentinel’s Naseem S. Miller remembered. “One of his well-known pieces told the story of a 32-year-old mom with a heart condition who died because she didn’t have access to medical care.”

That is how, without a single ballot being cast, Orlando got to know the real Billy Manes and how much he loved the city that loved him back.

illy was my best friend. But it wasn’t until he passed that I realized that he was everyone’s best

friend.

I feel like I always knew Billy because of his coverage of community organizing for years but we became close after each of us took on our own struggles: his tragically losing Alan, my fight against cancer, my mom’s lost battle to cancer, and the fight for earned sick time and the subsequent scandal led by Mayor Teresa Jacobs that prevented workers in Orange County from having access to paid sick days. We bonded through these battles. And those nights of sobbing, loss and consoling were the ones I treasure most. He felt emotions so deeply and rawly and displayed them so nakedly like no one I have ever known.

I don’t think Billy ever heard of a fight for the people that he didn’t jump on board for, and fight for, and write for. He used every ounce of his teeny body and his giant heart to make our state better for children, families, workers and lovers. As Billie Jean said in the movie, “Fair is fair,” and these people haven’t had fairness for quite some time.

He didn’t back down and didn’t let anything slide. Because not holding people in power accountable for what they had done meant they would do it again and probably worse. And that wasn’t the community that Billy wanted to live in.

And it wasn’t just the public fights. It was his private support and cheerleading for others challenged by loss, or inequality, or injustice.

I’ve heard from so many people who didn’t know Billy reaching out to him on messenger apps and Billy coaching them through heartache and the fight to make themselves whole again. How he changed those lives, and how many, will never be fully known because he wasn’t in it for bragging rights. He was in it for love, equality and justice.

ake note, Orlando; we lost someone special today.

Billy’s heart was too big for his fragile body. Not that he’d let on. You’d hug him tight when you’d see him and his hips would dig into you, as if warning, “Don’t love me too hard, you could bruise me.” Not that he’d push you away.

Waif-thin with hair you could see across the room before you spotted his flailing arms or heard his laugh. This precious man with a twinkle in his eye. Letting you know he was in on a joke that you might figure out later if you paid attention and stayed close.

Billy was always real. In his writing, in his relationships with people and coworkers. His work was blunt and lyrical, and to the point.

I cut my teeth in the print world with Billy at Orlando Weekly. I fell into a job there as Calendar Editor after getting laid off by the City of Winter Park. The editorial staff had drunk some sort of Kool-Aid, making them believe I could learn quickly and join their team of alt-paper cool kids.

They let me sit at their table for a whole year, grooming me with endless patience.

Billy was one of the ones that took me under his wing and made me realize I had a voice that people could listen to.

A voice that could, if refined, hold some weight. He encouraged me and coddled me, and massaged my little editor brain

into something that would produce a legible (if grammatically incorrect) thought now and then.

When I was offered a job at Bungalower he was one of the first to put down his saltine crackers, clap his hands, and push me on my way.

Billy Manes was more than a shock of white hair in a crowd, or a Warhollike character pulling strings and slyly offering social commentary. He was a cheerleader. A friend. A man I was proud to know and learn from.

Billy spoke up for social justice. He shared his shortcomings and made it OK for us to do the same. He was raw, he was funny, and sometimes a mess. And I loved him for it.

Billy Manes died on Friday, July 21, surrounded by dear friends and his charming husband, Tony. A family he had curated over the years. Their loss is echoed in our city and carried on countless shoulders as we face a world that is less colorful and less truthful than it was before.

Today we cry, but tomorrow we’ll cherish.

ike everyone, I’ve got lots of Billy stories. Many of them happen in bars, and most of them involve some sort of awkward laughter. Again, nothing unusual. But one of them is my favorite, and I kept flashing back to it over the past few days, mainly because it involved that weird combination of supportive love and total embarrassment that Billy specialized in.

So, here we are, in the early 2000s.

2002, maybe? The exact year is unclear so far along, but what I do remember is this: It’s an Orlando Weekly holiday party, one of the first that I attended as an editor at the paper. It’s at some awful, now-defunct dance club downtown (I’m sure the paper got a deal), and my wife Eve and I are huddled into a sticky booth with Billy and Alan, unsure of exactly what to make of the situation happening all around us. I was still figuring out what to make of Billy as a person, as his written persona was so … overwhelming.

But here we are, making small talk, being a little bitchy, and trying to make sure our conversation didn’t get so work-

oriented that it excluded our significant others.

In the course of the significant-other-inclusive conversation, Alan said ... something. All these years later, I don’t remember what exactly it was, but what I do remember was that it was ludicrous and weird and about raising goats and eating them. And Eve replied, “Really?” because she’s a vegetarian and was not cool with goats getting eaten. I laughed.

Alan laughed. Eve (who instantly realized he was joking) laughed. Billy did not laugh. He knew it was a joke. But he was mortified. Angry, even.

Now, to be clear, Alan was making a joke. And to be further clear, Eve isn’t dumb. But what Billy saw was two guys making fun of someone for not being in on something.

Billy apologized for this incident nearly every single time he saw Eve. I am pretty sure he apologized for it in a column. I am pretty sure he apologized for it as recently as last year. He wasn’t apologizing for Alan; he was apologizing – for a decade and a half – that he could have, in some way, been responsible for someone feeling bad through no fault of their own.

Again, this is just one small, dumb story.

There are lots of others, but whether they center around sadness, joy, debauchery, celebration, support, agony or any of the other emotions Billy wore on his sleeve, they all seem to come back to the same idea: Everyone is struggling in their own way, and it’s our job as humans to make sure we help each other, not make the struggle harder.

If the fictional quote about newspaper journalism’s purpose – “comfort the afflicted, afflict the comfortable” – is true, then Billy was born to be a newspaper journalist. Although a lot of what he wrote (OK, most of what he wrote) (OK, nearly all of what he wrote) was refracted through his own personal prism, his overriding ethos was to comfort the afflicted and afflict, if not the comfortable, then those who were comfortable enough to ignore the afflicted. By putting his own afflictions – from the very very major to the very very minor – on display, he made it easier for others to process their own challenges. By calling out injustice where he saw it and giving it a human face, he made it harder for others to ignore.

I loved him and I’ll miss him. May we all be little, yellow, and different in our own way.

It’s hard to describe the impact that Billy’s column “Blister” had on me when I moved here to work at Orlando Weekly.

Migrating from the Deep South of South Carolina, I had never read anything so outrageous and fabulous that so honestly and accurately chronicled my life at the time, and those of so many gay men of my generation. To see this every week in a local, general-market publication with the reach of Orlando Weekly and have it received with such a degree of acceptance and popularity played a huge part in assuring me I had found the right publication and the right community to call home.

Over the years, Billy progressed, and I came to know him more as a person. To say he was a brilliant star that burned out too soon is an understatement.

His absence will leave a black hole in the fabric of Orlando. His impact on Central Florida and shaping the voice of Orlando Weekly is immeasurable. I have never worked with any writer with such a razor-sharp wit, who could so effectively make us double over with laughter, tears and outrage, all in equal measure. Billy Manes, you are already so missed and will be for many years to come. May you finally rest in peace, my talented, funny and fabulous colleague and friend.”

It is a time of war, and the stabil-

ity of Western civilization is being shaken by rising tides of nationalism and religious strife, which threaten to overturn the established order. A cowardly man-child is poised to assume political power when a woman dares to stand up and claim the mantle of leadership. She’s selfless, strong-willed and (most importantly) almost always right on the issues. So naturally, powerful men join forces against her, undermining her authority with misogynist insults about her appearance and unsubstantiated accusations of criminal and spiritual corruption.

If this scenario sounds suspiciously similar to recent events, it only goes to show how timeless George Bernard Shaw’s historical epic Saint Joan still is. “This play, written in 1923 about events that happened in the 15th century, is still relevant today because we aren’t learning from history,” says producer-director Jeremy Seghers, whose electrifying staging of Joan of Arc’s story is running at Rollins College’s Fred Stone Theatre through Saturday, Aug. 5.

“The idea of persisting in the face of complete abandonment from your allies is relevant today, especially for women,” Seghers said to me after opening night of his production, “because I think our government can feel like it’s turned its back on women.”

Seghers earned a reputation with his productions of Equus and This Is Our Youth for intimate, edgy, site-specific shows in unconventional locations, so Saint Joan is a striking departure for him. He was drawn to the Maid of Orleans’ saga of ascension, execution and eventual canonization after seeing some Joan of Arc-themed stained glass on display at a Miami museum. He picked Shaw’s retelling of the tale in part because “it was kind of hard to deny the contemporary parallels,” but also for the opportunity to direct a strong woman: “I’ve been focusing a lot on dudes and how fucked up they are, so I wanted to do something with a female lead.”

Seghers initially considered staging Saint Joan inside an actual church, but chose Rollins’ recently renovated Fred Stone instead because, as a former chapel, “it has enough of that church feeling.”

Seghers calls the theater, which is available for public rentals when school isn’t in session, as “a great space [that] is underutilized,” praising its newly installed acoustical panels and resident lighting designer Kaitlyn Harrington. With scenic designer Jamie DeHay, Seghers has arranged audiences around the thrust playing space in groups of 12 “so that everyone is on a jury,” and while he calls the production style “submersive rather than immersive,” the viewer is never more than a few feet from the action.

At the center of that action is Joan, the Maid of Orleans herself, as heartbreakingly embodied by the luminous Theresa Hanson. A Gainesville transplant and relative newcomer to Orlando’s theater community, Hanson radiates a kind of purposeful nobility and clear-eyed conviction that could easily rally an army, without losing sight of the simple teenager underneath the armor. “There is a very straightforwardness to her Joan that I connected to,” says Seghers, recalling Hanson’s audition. “She wasn’t hysterical and weepy,” instead exhibiting the militant mettle of a proto-Princess Leia or Wonder Woman. “There was just the right amount of youth and maturity in her. I got very lucky.”

Hanson’s passionate performance is ably supported by the ensemble, which includes Jim Cundiff, John Moughan and Colton Butcher in multiple roles. Most notably, Cole NeSmith plays the Catholic Inquisitor during the pivotal trial scene, delivering a fiery sermon against individualism that’s simultaneously inspiring and insidious. NeSmith, a real-life minister in his own church, preaches this poisoned gospel with such effortless eloquence that even Joan might agree to her execution, adding a compelling complexity to the inevitable outcome. “Bernard Shaw is very

It’s only fair to warn you that, at three and a half hours long (including two intermissions), Saint Joan is a marathon for both actors and audience. While conceding that the script can be wordy, Seghers hasn’t edited the text or inserted fight scenes to make it more palatable, as other directors have, asking rhetorically, “Why bother doing Shaw if you are going to cut down the dialogue?” But Seghers’ aesthetic imprint is evident through his production design’s “mishmash and mix-up of genres and periods,” which somehow incorporates archaic garb with ’80s New Wave and a touch of clownish drag to “show the timelessness of the story, which could have taken place in many different time periods.”

Finally, just because Joan “takes herself and everyone very seriously” doesn’t mean the show is without levity; the highly theatrical acting style embraces elements of vaudeville, especially during the surreal dream sequence that serves as an extended epilogue, which provides some much-needed comedy while also creating a Brechtian distancing effect from the horror of Joan’s grisly doom. “People come in expecting it to be super dark. irst things first: “Grocerant” is a nifty little portmanteau combining grocery and restaurant. Whether you’ve heard the word before or not, doubtless you’ve noticed the inviting areas newer supermarkets have set up in which to enjoy their prepared foods: trendy tables and chairs, free Wi-Fi, a constellation of condiments on demand.

A market research study by the NPD Group found that in-store dining and takeout of prepared foods accounted for $10 billion of consumer spending in 2015, driven by millennials who rate grocerants higher than quick-serve restaurants on variety and healthfulness. Market research aside, no one can deny that stopping for a quick bite before hitting the aisles can prevent junk food from jumping into the basket, though carts equipped with pint-glass holders (like at Lucky’s Market) might put beer goggles on your grocery list, so shop carefully.

illy Manes, once Orlando’s most devoted nightlife icon, passed away last week. Those of us who knew him well are heartbroken, and everyone in the city is suffering the loss of the fierce fighter for justice he became.

If you knew Billy (or even if you didn’t), you know he liked a cocktail or three. What you may not have known is that he was incredibly picky about what he drank. After years of being strictly a screwdriver guy, his doctor told him all that OJ was irritating his digestion. Around the same time, he tasted Van Gogh Vodka’s açai-blueberry flavor and an unswerving bond of loyalty was formed, to the point that he traveled with a fifth of the stuff if he was going to be out of town for more than a couple of days.

So vodka-soda it was, no matter what else was on offer. (Billy was a true creature of habit, another trait that might surprise those who only knew his party persona.) For years I tried to tempt him with more sophisticated cocktails, mixing him Negronis and Gin Rickeys, but he’d have none of it. He would always say, “Pretty girls drink vodka soda,” and since he was usually the prettiest one in the room, I always relented.

Part of me thinks I ought to have tried this blueberry-and-vodka Remix while he was still around to enjoy it, but I know what would have happened: He’d have taken a few sips to be polite and then returned to his kindred spirit. But this is what I’ll raise in toast to him. jyoung@orlandoweekly.com

SOMETHING WICKED Florence Pugh shines in Bard-less Lady Macbeth

A

star is born in Lady Macbeth, and her name is Florence Pugh. As Katherine, a young woman sold into a loveless marriage in 19th-century rural England, Pugh is a revelation, a legit talent and surefire best actress Oscar contender who announces her presence with fierce authority.

Pugh’s eminently watchable Katherine begins the film as a subservient waif stuck in a marriage to someone who has no interest in her. She acquiesces to her husband’s demands – none of them sexual – and in doing so isn’t allowed to do much of anything. She can’t go outside. She has no friends. She can’t go to bed when she wants. She’s a kept woman whose happiness is disregarded at every turn; her role is functional rather than necessary, which is a horrible way to live.

It’s only when her husband (Paul Hilton) and father-in-law (Christopher Fairbank) leave for business that she begins to come out of her shell. She chats with her maid Anna (Naomi Ackie). She drinks more than

she ordinarily would. She even sticks up for Anna when the stable boys bully her. She is the woman of the house, after all.

Then something unexpected happens.

One of the horse groomsmen, Sebastian (Cosmo Jarvis), piques her interest. She piques his interest too. A torrid love affair ensues, and it appears safe because there’s no sign of her husband returning. You’ll think you know where the story is headed, and you’ll be correct to an extent, but how it gets there – and where it goes afterward – you will not see coming, and oh boy is it a doozy.

Shakespeare fans will be disappointed to know this has nothing to do with the Bard’s Lady Macbeth, except perhaps for her calculating ways. Rather, writer Alice Birch’s screenplay is based on Nikolai Leskov’s novel Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, and as I understand it deviates slightly from the book for optimum cinematic effect. This is a good thing – it’s the filmmakers’ responsibility to make the best movie they can, not to be as faithful to the source material

as possible.

What’s remarkable about Pugh’s performance is how Katherine’s character arc feels natural and shocking at the same time.

In the beginning Katherine is hopeless and demure, mindful of her social role and fearful of the consequences of expecting anything else. She’s still appealing, though, as you sense her suppressed personality waiting to come out. As the story evolves she has numerous awakenings, and as Pugh shows Katherine’s passion and desperation to hold onto the only thing she’s ever known as happiness, we are enraptured with her performance.

As great as Pugh is, this movie is also a coming-out party for heretofore unknown director William Oldroyd, whose previous work includes only three short films. At 89 minutes, Lady Macbeth is on the short side of feature length, but it’s as long as it needs to be.

The dark, dank and depressing aesthetics fit the setting and are appropriate for the harshness of the story. Life is so dull, and seemingly cold and uncomfortable, that it’s no wonder Katherine will do anything to hold on to the few pleasures she enjoys.

For our sake, it’s a pleasure to watch Lady Macbeth. This is a jolt of dark drama in the midst of mainstream summer, and a welcome sight at that. The film industry better be warned: Hell hath no fury like Florence Pugh.

The Dark Tower

BY ST EVE SCHNEID ER OPENING THIS WEEK: The Dark Tower Most movies have a simple

agenda behind them, which is to be good and make money. Sometimes just the latter.

But The Dark Tower has a whole passel of other objectives set out for it, including: function as both an adaptation of and a sequel to Stephen King’s popular literary series; inaugurate a shared cinematic universe that’s intended to incorporate characters and elements from other King properties; lay the groundwork for not just a sequel film but also a tie-in TV series; and, oh yeah, accomplish all of this at a time when most of the King-related oxygen in the entertainment media is being sucked up by the looming It. Any time you see a bar being set that high, you know the job is going to a black guy; enter Idris Elba, who gets to play the Gunslinger character tasked with protecting reality from King uber-villain Walter O’dim, aka Randall Flagg (Matthew McConaughey).

Reality, schmeality – with all of the impossible expectations that have been assigned to it, I’ll be impressed if this picture can protect the dollar theater from the Emojis. (PG-13)

Kidnap Back in the late ’70s, a cinephile whose name I couldn’t possibly recall went on public radio to talk about a study he had conducted of films that had been made but never released. His major finding? A surprising number of them starred Donald Sutherland.

Sometimes it seems Halle Berry holds the modern-day equivalent of that distinction, because she appears in so many films no one actually sees. Thus far, her only picture to be denied a stateside showing of any kind was 2012’s Dark Tide – but as I write this, we still have a few days to go to find out if Kidnap will make two. A revenge thriller that has Berry going all Liam Neeson on the people who abducted her son, it was completed a full two and a half years ago but kept getting its release postponed thanks to complicating factors – like the collapse of Relativity Media and the fact that it probably stinks. Nonetheless, it’s the first offering from brand-new distributor Aviron Pictures, which is swearing it will arrive in theaters this Friday, Aug. 4. Meanwhile, Donald Sutherland has three films coming out before the end of this year, he swears to God. (R) Landline I knew the ’90s revival was in full

to advance the Rumsfeldian party line that torture works, filmmaker Kathryn Bigelow and her minister of information – I’m sorry, her screenwriter – Mark Boal turn their highly specific notions of justice to the American race riots of the late 1960s. Detroit 1967 is the setting as heavy-handed police tactics lead to tragedy in and around a sleazy hotel.

Initial critical reaction has cast the film as dramatically effective, though some have questioned if it’s too simplistic in portraying white police as mustache-twirling villains.

Hey, maybe we should just be happy that the brutality isn’t on the part of the alleged heroes this time. Element to watch out for: John Boyega’s supporting role as a security guard may finally reveal if he can do anything with a weapon, since he quit the stormtroopers before we could find out if he shared their inability to hit the broad side of a barn. Anyway, the ’90s are the setting for Landline, the latest teaming of filmmaker Gillian Robespierre and star Jenny Slate. This one has Slate as an engaged young woman who bonds with her teenage sister over their mutual suspicion that their father is having an extramarital affair. That shared concern spurs a new understanding between the women, as they fumble toward a consensus about life’s various joys and disappointments. Speaking of disappointment, did you know Ruby Tuesday doesn’t give you biscuits anymore? Maybe I do want to go back to the ’90s, because that shit would never have flown back then. This week has been all Billy Manes.

Across the city and even the nation, the news and feeds have been dominated with remembrance and reaction to the far-toopremature loss of this local treasure. It’s been an outpouring that’s commensurate with his footprint and is probably the only thing good about this whole tragedy. The shockwave even permeated the music scene – locally, of course, but beyond as well. Billy’s beloved Duran Duran tweeted a farewell to the lifelong superfan. On stage, the B-52s’ Cindy Wilson came to play and dedicated her performance to Billy, whose final published interview in Watermark was with her.

After about 40 years, Wilson is currently, finally focused on a solo career.

This emergence is notable because this is a musician – established and certified superstar though she may be – going back to her original indie roots and to the art of creation itself. Right away, her new electro-pop material is a departure. But on stage, the performance by her and her band was sometimes raw, untamed, weird even. Though Wilson has certainly earned the right to it, credit her for coming with a new exercise of fresh expression and not a rote display of legacy. It’s the return of a true artist and not simply the inertia of a careerist. All of which makes it happily coincidental – but probably not accidental – that the day before her Orlando appearance came the announcement that her debut album, appropriately titled Change, will be released in November on venerated indie label Kill Rock Stars.

featured acts. Wilson happened to arrive to a city still reeling in heartbreak but flowing over with love. And this became a scene rally that culminated in a sellout crowd that was packed with a living gallery of Orlando music history and, most notably, Billy’s husband, Anthony Mauss – all in one place for the same purpose. A normal prospect of fun, somewhere along the way, became an event of importance. And the scene at this show is what happens when a community channels grief into fellowship.

Cindy Wilson, the Pauses and the Sh-Booms were all good and made for a powerhouse bill. But nothing could’ve compared to the pulse of the house. What was in our hearts was in the air – and when it all aggregated, it was a unifying catharsis.

It was palpable, visible. People greeted each other wider, the hugs were deeper.

At some point in the night, I realize that these gatherings are how everything we do and everything we are in the community lives forever. I miss you, Billy. I love you, Orlando.

BELLOWS, WILL’S PUB, JULY 25

Bellows – the vehicle for musician Oliver Kalb – is part of the Epoch, a Brooklyn arts alliance that includes indie luminaries like Eskimeaux, Told Slant and Small Wonder.

Unlike some loose collectives, members of the Epoch aren’t just affiliated in name only. They’re all over each other’s records and support each other on the road. The principals of the aforementioned acts, in fact, made up Bellows’ live touring band.

Cindy Wilson arrived to a city still reeling in heartbreak but flowing over with love. And her show became a scene rally with a sellout crowd on a night dedicated to Billy Manes.

As a bedroom project, Bellows’ recordings exude a kind of wondrous intimacy. They’ve got a lo-fi indie-folk heart but operate beyond with an expanded and inclusive palette. The effective use of technology allows some of Kalb’s exploring pop songs to reach and soar to grandeur.

But live, the music breathes and swells in a way that even the recordings don’t. With electronics, depth and just plain gusto, their stage sound is almost a different beast altogether. Yeah, like a real rock band.

Though the positive additions of live force and the dimensionality of three solid singing voices is straightforward math, the result is even greater than that. Their live stance is, by intent, a more powerful lean that not only reframes but concentrates some of Kalb’s melodic filigree. The affecting quality of his music was still all there, it was just injected with more purpose and point, like a recalibration that suddenly set the world right. At their workshop this week, you’ll learn what tactics to use to make sure your rep takes your call. Plus, Florida House representatives Mike Miller (District 47-R) and Carlos Guillermo Smith (District 49-D) will be on hand to answer questions about their priorities going into the next session. “Trainspotting” is a term used in reference to any sort of hobby that revolves around meticulous attention to detail. It’s derived from railway aficionados who would obsessively record the engine numbers of locomotives that stopped in their towns, though the term is often applied to those who obsess over vinyl record pressing labels, comic book issue numbers, or any other interest that boasts an excessive amount of minutiae. And minutiae is just what you’ll get at the National Model Train Show, taking over the Orange County Convention Center this weekend.

Manufacturers and retailers create dazzling displays of miniature railways, festooned with tiny towns, tunnels, flora, fauna and more. Each diorama represents hundreds of hours of work, especially the 2,500-square-foot Incredible LEGO MiniLand, made from millions of LEGO pieces. Bear Dream MUSIC

This Orlando band’s name won’t be familiar to many – that is, unless you’re an especially keen reader of “This Little Underground.” The new act is the vehicle for Evan Shafran, whom most know as the wild caveman drummer of freak-rock group Happy Valley. Word came our way – then was confirmed by Shafran himself – that the inspiration for the name was a 2014 column reviewing Happy Valley that described the burly performer known for playing shirtless as a “bear dream.” Though they haven’t played out much, Shafran and the boys – a band that includes notable Orlando weirdos Danny Feedback and Jim Ivy – have created an album’s worth of material to officially unveil at this release show. That debut LP is a melted prog-punk kaleidoscope that’s cut from the same mischief and subversion that made Happy Valley so individual and exceptional. If you’re not a fan of Bollywood soundtracks, it’s likely the only encounter you’ve ever had with Sonu Nigam was his appearance on one song from the Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack. Yeah, “Aaj Ki Raat,” the one you skipped over because it sounded too much like a Bollywood soundtrack song (which is ironic since the song was pretty crossover-y). If you are a fan of Bollywood soundtracks, you are certainly instantly familiar with his voice, as it’s been heard on more than 2,000 songs, including – swoon – “Ishq Bina” from Taal (which, seriously, if he had done nothing else, would have ensured his place in playback singer history).

In other words, Nigam is a capital-G Giant in the world of Indian film soundtrack singers (and a heartthrob to boot), and he delivers an appropriately overwhelming live performance that, even if you have only a mildly passing interest in the music, is well worth the price of admission. – Jason Ferguson with Atif Aslam | 7 p.m. | CFE Arena, 12777 N. Ekphrastic Floridas LITERARY

Adventurous local literary imprint Burrow Press teams up with the Gallery at Avalon Island for a one-off cross-disciplinary celebration of unseen and unheard views of Florida with Ekphrastic Floridas. Spinning out of Avalon’s current gallery exhibition – the very impressive Roadsides & Skylines show – Ekphrastic Floridas gathers together a crew of local writers to read a piece, each based on art in the Roadsides show. With a roster featuring Iljeen Jo, Amber Norman, Lucianna Chixaro Ramos, and avant-lit vets Steven Garnett and Holly Tavel, it’ll make for a fascinating challenge to match text with the intriguing and evocative visuals of Roadsides, a show that features photography, shadowboxes and everything in between. Big Trouble in Little Courtesy EVENTS

Among the many successful filmic collaborations between John Carpenter and Kurt Russell, Big Trouble in Little China is … a lesser work, let’s say. Lacking the grim joie de vivre of Escape From New York or the claustrophobic horror of The Thing, Carpenter’s attempt to join the martial-arts film pantheon has little to recommend it – unless you enjoy laughing yourself sick. If you don’t mind snickering at hundreds of people’s hard work, then Big Trouble in Little China is a goddamn masterpiece. Luckily, at this event it matters not where you stand on the morals of MSTK-style fun-poking, because the Courtesy is bringing in two articles of unquestionable excellence: Jacksonville barkeep Robert Freeman and food from Orlando’s Chuan Lu Garden. My wife has been seriously ill for three years, and I have been her sole caregiver.

The doctors here weren’t getting the job done, so we made the difficult decision for her to move 2,000 miles away to start over and be near her family. Our sex life has been nonexistent since she became ill. She offered me a “hall pass” with two rules: 1) It couldn’t be anyone I worked with and 2) she didn’t want to know about it. She offered multiple times, but I was taking care of her 24/7 and never used it. I started to consider using it after she moved. But I didn’t want to just find some random person on Tinder. You see, I am a cross-dresser. My wife knows. She’s never seen me dressed and isn’t interested in knowing more about it. So instead of paying for a traditional escort, I found someone who would dress me, do my makeup, go out to dinner with me, but no sex. We met three times. However, one time I did hire a trans woman who dressed me and we did have sex. Obviously, I had to lie at times about where I was when I was using my hall pass, but I considered it a white lie to meet Rule No. 2. But my wife flew home unannounced to get her things (with her ex-husband along to help) and found my clothes out and quickly got out of me what I had done. She was beyond pissed. She says I had a hall pass for sex but not crossdressing. She belittled me for the crossdressing and said the sex was supposed to be a one-and-done thing. She knew I was a cross-dresser, and I derived more pleasure from this cross-dressing experience than having anonymous sex with an escort. My questions: Did I violate the hall pass? Was I wrong to cross-dress?

true that women can have same-sex experiences without freaking out the men in their lives (because straight men are likelier to be aroused than repulsed), women’s choices and their bodies are subjected to much more scrutiny, control and violence than our male bodies are, EGADS. Until politicians legislate against your right to control your own body, you can note the few areas where women enjoy more latitude than men, but you aren’t allowed to bitch about them.

And this should put your pain in perspective: According to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than half the women murdered in the United States every year – 55 percent – are killed by their husbands, boyfriends or exes. It sucks to be dumped for your sexual orientation or gender expression, I know.

And kink-shaming is more painful than nonkinksters realize. But none of your exes have stalked and murdered you.

Now the good news: There are women out there who dig men in high heels, there are women out there into bi guys, and there is a significant overlap between those two groups of women. If you succumb to bitterness at your young age because you’ve been dumped a few times – if you despise all women because you were dumped by women you wouldn’t want to be with anyway – you’re going to scare off the women who are genuinely attracted to guys like you.

The women who bolted did you a painful favor, and you should be grateful. Because with those average women out of your life, EGADS, you’re free to go find an above-average woman who wants an above-average guy like you. Pro-tip: You’re likelier to find those women at a fetish party or club, or via a kink social-media site or dating website.
