Orlando holds vigil for those killed in Charlottesville’s white supremacist rally:

The place that used to be the site of Orlando’s Confederate monument became a gathering space Sunday night as more than 100 mourners held a vigil for Heather Heyer, a 32-year-old paralegal killed when a man rammed his car into a counterprotest of a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville. Two Virginia state troopers were also killed during the rally in a helicopter accident, for reasons yet unknown. Robin Harris, an Orlando activist, told the crowd that Charlottesville is a mirror of what’s brewing locally. “If you want to learn how to be in true solidarity, go and sit down somewhere and listen to those that have been through this,” she told the crowd. “Come and look at the bruises on our heads. And then, and only then, can we really march in solidarity.”

Orlando officials open time capsule left inside Confederate statue:

Cocktail napkin-sized Confederate battle flags. A yellowed book recording minutes of an Ocala convention for the Florida division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. And a 1911 edition of the local Daily Reporter-Star detailing how “bad health” prompted an Orlando man to drown himself in Lake Eola. Those are just some of the items documented by city staff last week after they opened a centuryold time capsule that was located inside the base of the Confederate memorial that was removed from Lake Eola Park in June after local residents said it was a symbol of white supremacy and racism. The UDC had threatened to sue the city for the capsule, but Mayor Buddy Dyer said last week that the city had not been served with a lawsuit.

Day care driver arrested after 3-year-old boy found dead in hot van:

Orlando Police say Little Miracles Academy employee Deborah St. Charles, 51, is facing charges of aggravated manslaughter in the death of Myles Hill. Investigators say St. Charles assumed all the children were out of the van when she left Myles inside and went into the day care. The toddler died after being left for about 12 hours in temperatures of more than 144 degrees. The Florida Department of Children and Families has revoked the operating license for the two locations owned by Little Miracles Academy.

Orlando commits to 100 percent renewable energy citywide by 2050: By the year 2050, Orlando commissioners want all the electricity used in the city to come from renewable sources of energy like solar and wind power. The decision makes Orlando the largest city in Florida committed to this goal. Aside from combating climate change and pollution, the city argues the move toward renewable energy increases economic opportunities in Central Florida by creating local jobs in the industry. NIGHT WATCH One of Orlando’s newest employees talks about her role as liaison between the city and downtown’s nightlife scene

I

n polite conversation, it’s called “the push.” When they can’t sell liquor any more, bars and clubs down Orange Avenue start shutting down at 2 a.m., pushing out hundreds of inebriated patrons onto the closed street. Most of the time, downtown Orlando’s main strip turns into a unofficial street party as lingering customers slowly tear themselves away from their friends and head to their cars. But other times, intoxicated brawls between drunks cause clashes with Orlando Police bike officers trying to keep the peace, creating a violent chaos. In everyday conversation, you’d call it a shit show.

Regardless of what your name for it is, it’s now the responsibility of Dominique Greco-Ryan.

Greco-Ryan was hired about a month ago by the City of Orlando as its first “night manager,” a role in which she will serve as a liaison between the local government and nightlife businesses. While her duties are still being identified, she says she expects her responsibilities will include bridging a higher level of communication between the city and local merchants so that they can work more closely and efficiently together.

“The city showed this initiative by cre-

ating a full-time position to specifically target these unique businesses that have a unique need and a unique place in our city,” she says. “I think that this position was made to just hyper-focus on that instead of having it tacked onto another role.”

Greco-Ryan’s new position was the end result of a process that began with an after-hours club that doesn’t exist anymore. Back in 2015, city leaders decided to pass a moratorium on after-hours clubs in Orlando, shortly after the opening of Club Nokturnal. Nokturnal didn’t last long – it shut its doors within months of opening.

But the task force studying Orlando’s nightlife that was attached to the moratorium continued its work, broadening its scope after a gunman killed 49 people in a massacre at the gay nightclub Pulse on June 12, says David Barilla, assistant director of the city’s downtown development board and community redevelopment agency.

In November 2016, the task force submitted its report to commissioners with comments from the Responsible Hospitality Institute, which advised that Orlando’s disorderly scene on Orange Avenue after 2 a.m. was “not a sustain-

able model” for the future, especially with the future addition of 7,700 students who would be attending the UCF Downtown campus, according to the Orlando Sentinel.

Barilla, who formed part of the task force, says many club and bar owners were already practicing security measures after Pulse that they shared with the larger group during task force meetings. The report also incorporated a list of recommendations that included: building Orlando’s nightlife branding through marketing campaigns; establishing transportation hubs for taxis and ride-share vehicles to easily access patrons; enhancing security by increasing the police bicycle unit; planning for high-impact nights in downtown’s bars and clubs like they do at the Amway Center or Camping World Stadium; and establishing a committee and a “night manager” position to coordinate city resources to the nightlife economy. A relatively novel idea, several cities around the U.S., such as Delray Beach, San Francisco and Pittsburgh, already have their own night managers.

“What we determined is that the nighttime economy is unique, and you cannot approach it the same way that you approach the daytime economy,” Barilla says. “The way traditionally governments have operated to address the nighttime economy has been from a ‘Who you have on it’ night, like police officers. … We needed to have someone that’s designated to looking at that night economy and saying, ‘Is it operating optimally? How can we service it better? How can we build better relationships?’” orlandoweekly.com

The city hired Greco-Ryan for the $70,000 job from V Group Concepts, which owns several venues downtown, including Gitto’s Pizza, Herman’s Loan Office, SideBar and Vyce Lounge. During her nine-year run at V Group, Greco-Ryan says as the project director, she oversaw a large management staff split among 11 competing venues and worked to help them communicate with each other.

While she’s still new at City Hall, Greco-Ryan already has some ideas about how to improve “the push,” like gravitating patrons onto downtown’s side streets instead of Orange Avenue and coordinating with merchants and Orlando Police on when to release customers from the venues, an idea which some bars and clubs already implement.

“I think public safety is something that’s on the forefront of a lot of operators’ minds to improve, but I think it’s going to take a group effort because it’s not effective if you’re just one small bar doing it,” she says. “We’re working in a smaller city with a really concentrated row of bars and nightclubs. We’re not as spread out as say, different parts of Tampa and definitely Miami, so it does take road closures and logistical issues as far as traffic, so it’s something that we have in consideration at all times.”

With more people coming downtown to party and occasionally get wasted, GrecoRyan and Barilla say incoming populations will bring the demand for more diverse nightlife businesses in downtown such as breweries, wine bars, jazz bars, karaoke clubs and late-night restaurants, while at the same time trying to preserve what makes Orlando unique.

“We have room to bring in these different types of experiences and destinations,” Greco-Ryan says. “I don’t think we’re trying to mimic any one city, but I think that certain cities do maybe one or two things really well, like Austin or Charleston, which have segmented areas off main streets that make it easier for you to catch an Uber or Lyft. We have some room to bring in more art-based events and installations that keep the boundaries of where everyone’s congregating and bring a more approachable feel.”

Could food trucks or public bathrooms be added to Orlando’s downtown scene?

Maybe, but it’s all still very new as GrecoRyan and city officials discuss how to further enhance the nighttime economy.

“I’m excited to have the opportunity to interact with all these people on both sides,” she says. “That was the biggest draw for me, being able to kind of be the middleman and spearheading this on what’s best for both sides.”

Players begin by drafting their special talent cards.

“Y

ou probably don’t want to do that,” Kathleen Mercury says. “Think about the odds of your

dice roll here.”

It’s 11:30 p.m. in the Caribe Royale Resort’s Grand Sierra ballroom, and I am losing terribly.

“Yeah, you’re probably better betting on black or red and at least splitting with the two of us,” Morgan Dontanville says. I’m quickly learning the board gaming community is nothing if not accommodating.

More than a thousand board gamers pack the public gaming hall tonight at Dice Tower Con, the largest free-play gaming convention in the Southeast. They’re playing the most bleeding-edge games in the

industry, and here I am, hacking up this Bavarian relic. The game is Millionenspiel, a rare press-your-luck game from the early ’80s. Each turn, a player rolls two dice, which moves a single game piece around a multicolored wheel. Players bet chips and large bills on where the game piece will land. The player that guesses the correct colored space collects the wagered chips and bills.

Mercury has on a rhinestone tiara and her emerald-green “gaming dress,” so I’ve bet the house on green, plunking down eight serrated yellow chips at the center of the game board.

Mercury teaches gifted middle-school classes and gets her geek on as a traveling gaming convention exhibitor. Dontanville serves as chief creative officer at Catan Studios, a company that oversees the publishing and marketing of one of geekdom’s most ubiquitous exports: the Settlers of Catan board game series. The two have brought Catan Studio’s whole catalog –

Catan, Catan Junior, Catan Traveler – to the country’s most starry gaming conventions for years. After just two days of demoing the Catan brands for Dice Tower attendees, Orlando has joined their annual travel circuit.

“Dice Tower is too big to ignore,” Dontanville says.

“It’s only a few years old and already 2,500 or 3,000 strong, and it’s going to keep growing.”

Mercury cups the dice, shakes, rolls, adjusts her studded crown, clops the pawn – space by colored space – onto black, and bankrupts me. I fork over my chips, which Mercury adds to her war chest.

the night before, where attendees can play thousands of games all day and night. Mann stops at an empty concierge desk to charge her dying phone.

“I haven’t had a chance to look at any of these yet, and they’re just coming one after the other,” Mann says, leaning into the wall and cruising through her email inbox.

“I won’t say it’s been chaos, but I will say we’ve had our hands full.”

While video game and movie ticket sales have flagged over the last four years or so, hobby and indie board game sales have climbed. Some of these new classics like Settlers of Catan, where players carve out a kingdom on the fictional eponymous continent of Catan, have become household names thanks to exposure from pop culture bastions like Parks and Rec. But these “gateway games,” as hobbyists call them, are just that: portals to literally thousands of tabletop games.

Like nematodes rolling and moving from the primordial ooze, simple, chance-based American classics like the Game of Life and Candy Land have metamorphosed into more nuanced, engaging hobby games.

Worker placement, modular boards, area control, press your luck, cooperative play – a plethora of new mechanics and genres await on the game shelf. Not that there’s anything wrong with ooze (or Milton Bradley’s board game library, as Mann stresses), but quadrupeds do add some ecological diversity to the animal kingdom.

“It’s about making everyone feel welcome,” Mann says, unplugging her phone.

“We want to bring everyone to a table that feels like the game nights you remember as a child, whatever that family looked like.”

ast year, Dice Tower Con – named after the tall cups that board gamers use to roll fistfuls of dice – shared this same convention floor with a beauty pageant and, on the last day, a gaggle of Catholic nuns. Thirty-five vendors, numerous exhibitors and retailers, and the convention’s mountainous game library will fill every one of the Royale’s convention halls and suites this year. Ice Cool asks players to flick weighted plastic penguins down the doors and hallways of their frozen high school for points.

Players become galactic defenders by flipping space ships at a looming alien fleet in Flipship. You roll dice, Yahtzee-style, in a gladiatorial monster brawl to become the King of Tokyo.

I’m following Heather Mann, Dice Tower Con’s associate director, as she walks her pre-convention beat. She double-fists a thin leather planner and her iPhone. By Friday she’ll have graduated to a tablet, a phalanx of convention aides behind her toting bagged lunches and whatever else her vendors and exhibitors need to keep the day rolling. Mann’s team roll tarp-blue game cabinets and heft massive tubs of game boxes into the convention hall, across from hundreds of folding tables brought in

ryan Kline peers across the board like a helicopter dad. He dotes, he cringes, he interjects, and he revels in seeing his game being played by a complete stranger.

“That symbol means you can choose either Mana to play,” Kline says, “and you can find that on your reference card. What do you think of the reference cards, by the way?”

I’d met Kline’s girlfriend, Ada Gomez, Friday afternoon at the convention center coffee machine. We took turns punching up on all-night gaming fuel and trading stories

of two “civilians” discovering this massive gaming universe. Now I’m play-testing Manaforge, Kline’s first major design project, in the Caribe Royale’s Bonaire Room.

“In games like Dungeons and Dragons, you are the adventurer. You’re trying to save the world. In Manaforge, you forge their weaponry,” Gomez explains. “Harry Potter couldn’t have been invisible or done magic without the cloak or the wand.”

The Orlando area has become a bit of a hotbed for board game development.

Last year, more than three dozen amateur designers met at the Ramada in Kissimmee to play-test their prospective board games with each other and board game enthusiasts. At Dice Tower Con, it seems like every other attendee has a prototype to play-test – and many of them, like Kline, are local.

Orlando board game publishers may be scant in the City Beautiful, but standout boutiques like Screech Dragon Studios and Kline’s own Mystic Tiger Games are slowly changing that.

“You actually need two more Water Mana to tap that Workshop card,” Kline says, gingerly turning my Healing Potion back to an upright position.

Manaforge brings many popular game mechanics to the tabletop. Players begin by drafting two special talent cards, which allow each player to uniquely “break” the game’s rules, from a set of eight. Each turn, players roll at least five multicolored dice to collect “mana” that they can use to purchase Store cards and Workshop cards.

Store cards are placed off to the side, and Workshop cards are placed on a player’s Work Bench, up to four at a time. Any cards not purchased by the end of that turn are discarded, face up, and replaced. Some cards allow players to collect more Mana, while others award Prestige Points. The player with the most Prestige Points after nine turns wins.

My eyes glazed over when Kline and Gomez first explained the rules, but after only a couple of turns, I had a baby-grip grasp of the game’s rules and flow. Now I have a firm handle on playing Manaforge, or as solid as a soon-to-be last-place finisher can. That’s true for a majority of these new generation board games: They’re simple to learn, but tough to master.

This is Manaforge’s penultimate version, complete with glorious new artwork that would be right at home in your brother’s Magic the Gathering deck from 1999. A cloaked blacksmith on the game box swings his hammer at an enchanted scimitar, the blade encircled with fuchsia runes and fire.

“All we’re waiting on are embossed dice and some heftier tokens and game boards.”

Kline says. “Once those are done, we’re set for distribution.”

“A

s a kid, I would pretend to be an Animorph in my father’s backyard,” Andrea Zimmerman says, “but owning a Lord of the Ringsthemed pub isn’t so bad, either.”

Zimmerman’s pink unicorn Snuggie, a gift from a grateful patron, is draped over an adjacent barstool. She pecks at her laptop, tidying up the Cloak & Blaster’s new craft liquor and cocktail menu and planning the ensuing launch party.

Just about every dive, sports bar and brewery in Orlando has an obligatory stack of board games and Cards Against Humanity in the corner, but comparing those paltry collections to the Cloak & Blaster’s is like comparing Frodo’s hobbit-hole to the halls of Rivendell. Cloak & Blaster’s stout library of more than 300 board games contains American classics like Battleship, bluffing games like Coup and complex area-control games like Smallworld. Zimmerman’s partial to storytelling games herself, but with a local nerd dynasty to forge, she hardly plays for leisure anymore these days.

“Tabletop gaming was a hobby, but I’m a bit of a workaholic, so gaming is my job now,” Zimmerman says. “And I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

I met Zimmerman at MegaCon, another Orlando convention, almost five years ago, where she manned a modest table celebrating the Cloak & Blaster’s successful Kickstarter campaign. Today, two weeks before Dice Tower Con’s opening day, her pub hosts an event for Free Role-Playing Game Day. Dungeon Masters, or “DMs,” have their Dungeon Screens up, four-paneled boards concealing what booby traps and monsters the players will encounter as they move around the game board. And there are dice – oh, are there dice. Six-, eight- and 10-sided dice clack across five different tables, each clothed with dryerase game grids that players or DMs can adjust between campaigns for all-day adventuring.

thwarted by a dastardly pitfall: They ran out of beer.

“We had been drinking, so we couldn’t just drive somewhere to get more drinks for our night,” Zimmerman says. “So we had this conundrum: What do you do when you’re playing games, you’re drinking, you don’t want to drive and find a new location, and there’s nowhere to go? So we decided to try and fix that.”

The fledgling power couple made their nerd nest in a ne’er-do-well strip mall behind the Waterford Lakes Plaza, right at the University of Central Florida’s doorstep.

Cloak & Blaster’s neighbors and visiting geeks from across the country have raised their mugs in kind. One of Zimmerman’s bartenders hands me my figurative stein o’ mead – a snifter of Stone Brewing’s Imperial IPA. A literal armory adorns the walls behind him – a dwarfish battle axe, a leather chest plate, and myriad famous blades from across the grand universe of geekdom. Cloak & Blaster may be the first of its kind in Orlando, but something tells me it won’t be the last.

“When we were getting this started, tabletop gaming wasn’t at the forefront of pop culture. It wasn’t the hot thing to do,”

Zimmerman says. “And now people are jumping onto the wagon, which is great, because the whole purpose of creating a place like this is to get as many people as possible into the hobby of tabletop games.”

ryan Kline isn’t the only Orlandoan game whiz in the Bonaire Room this weekend.

“Besides my fiancée, there are two things I love most in this world,” Brian Holden exclaims, “helping people and gaming.”

Holden runs the Indie Game Alliance.

Headquartered off Alafaya Trail in Oviedo, Holden’s collective comprises 661 indie board game designers from around the world. These gurus are the Mickey Goldmills to scrappy designers’ Rocky Balboas, consulting on a nascent game’s theming, play-testing and even publishing.

“To us, IGA is like a big international family,” Holden says. “You’d think all these large companies involved in the Alliance would treat each other as competitors, but we couldn’t do what we do if we worked that way. Nobody ever hesitates to share advice or to share an idea, even if it means that someone is going to buy their game instead of the person giving the advice’s game.”

Holden speaks with a reverence – and deference – for his colleagues that reminds me of many a local brewer in my time covering the Orlando craft beer scene during the city’s 2013 craft brewing boom.

That industry has become more competitive over the years, but Holden doesn’t see board gaming development going down that route.

“So many people involved in gaming are, necessarily, friends,” Holden says. “If you’re a home brewer, you can brew beer at your house, I can brew beer in mine, but we may not ever meet. But if I make a game, I have to take it to a convention – I have to play it with other people, and those people are probably other designers. We’ve made friends with these people before they were ever ‘competitors,’ as it were.”

As is true of many Dice Tower attendees I’ll meet, video games were Holden’s first passion. Holden attended Full Sail University to study video game design, but after his professor brought in Settlers of Catan and Munchkin – two of board gaming’s “new classics” – to demonstrate proper game rules and balance, Holden fell in love with tabletop gaming.

Dozens of the games Holden’s collective has coached to fruition adorn the Bonaire Room. There’s Gingerdead House, where players must defend their freshly built gingerbread stronghold from unwashed hordes of ogres, trolls and witches. Players wrestle and rummage for alley scraps in Dumpster Brawl.

“I get to have a personal hand in making someone’s dreams happen, and this is very fulfilling to me,” says Holden.

Despite being the hero in countless developers’ stories, Holden hasn’t designed any board games himself – well, except for one: “I used to play Scrabble with my mom and my grandma – she lived with us,” Brian says. “That time with them was mine. I got to look across the table from them, and we got to be a family. And as my grandma got older and her eyesight faded, it was devastating when she could no longer play Scrabble. So my mom and I bought a bunch of poster board, and we made a massive

“That was a formative moment for me,” Holden says. “That’s how I really learned what it’s supposed to feel like when you sit down to play a board game.”

n going 0-for-6 at Dice Tower Con, I’ve made new friends from around the country. I’ve forged enchanted scepters. I’ve appraised precious jewels from the Middle East. I’ve captained an airship ferrying steampunk royalty. I’ve guided a clan of cavemen out of the Stone Age. I’ve battled intergalactic warlords across the detritus of space. I’ve lost thousands and thousands of German marks to a queen in an emerald dress.

I wanted to be a wizard when I grew up.

I knew it after an excruciating threefilling marathon one day, after the hygienist brought me to a corner of the dentist’s office, after she opened that plastic chest full of finger puppets and other trinkets, after I dug out that little gold ring with the garnet stone set at the center. I knew wizardry was my destiny. I was bullied for wearing that ring. I slept wearing that ring. My 5th birthday passed, and then the 6th, and then one day I never grew into what I wanted to be. But then, we don’t grow up. We just grow old.

“The power of board games is undeniable,” Zimmerman says. “They have this childlike element to them. That’s what I did as a kid – I played games. I played Capture the Flag and played pretend.”

You can’t live in the past, but, as I’m learning at Dice Tower Con, you can visit.

“When you’re playing a game, you feel really good after you’ve defeated the monster or saved the world,” Zimmerman says.

When Rick and Morty, the Adult

Swim cult favorite cartoon, kicked off its third season with its misanthropic mad-scientist protagonist destroying the galactic government in pursuit of the Chicken McNugget Szechuan Sauce briefly released to promote Disney’s 1998 movie Mulan, fans launched a million memes demanding McDonald’s bring the condiment back to our dimension. In a canny co-opting of grass-roots publicity, McDonald’s “discovered” four jugs of the goop, gave one to series co-creator and voice star Justin Roiland, and promised to deliver the remaining three to Rick and Morty superfans.

Enter David “Duckie” Wasman, a selfemployed digital media content creator and graphic designer based in downtown Orlando, and one of the three lucky recipients of McDonald’s famed Szechuan sauce.

He’s worked for the Orange County Tax Collector and held elected office in local precincts. But more importantly, for the purposes of this story, he’s been a diehard Rick and Morty fan from the show’s beginning.

“I was already familiar with Justin Roiland’s work,” Wasman tells me. “In Rick and Morty, I love the mixture of science, family, social constructs, pushing buttons, vulgarity, nonchalance and self-aware humor. I also love its history. Before it was Rick and Morty, it was ‘Doc and Mharti.’”

Readers beware: If you decide to Google it, it’s highly vulgar but hilarious.

To win the sauce, Wasman retweeted hashtags displayed during McDonald’s mysterious livestream on the night of the episode’s premiere. “I guess they liked that I also added emojis that corresponded with chicken and China, and that I followed directions,” says Wasman, adding that he thinks a tweet promising “If I win 1, I’m having 100+ of my friends meet me @ the #Orlando @McDonalds 4 a #SzechuanSauce #McNugget party” put him over the top. His first reaction upon learning he’d won was, “Wait, is this their real account? Am I being trolled?”

This isn’t Wasman’s first brush with Disney-related fame. In 2011 he founded

MCMagic, one of the earliest and most elaborate simulations of Walt Disney World inside the Minecraft video game.

“We re-created all the parks, resorts, water parks and more of the Walt Disney World Resort in full 1:1 scale,” Wasman recalls. “It had all the actual rides, all the fireworks shows, stage productions and much more. Our goal was to re-create that ‘magic’ in everything we did, so much so that we trained our Cast Members using the real classes at Disney University called Traditions. We also had tools to prevent trolling, swearing and personal information-sharing. Plus, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, we had multiple volunteers online to ensure our guests’ safety, security and happiness.”

The MCMagic server was featured in numerous online videos (see youtube. com/user/McMagicParks) and received recognition from the Guinness Book of World Records, but Wasman ended his involvement in the volunteer endeavor after its fifth anniversary. “It was a proof of concept that family-friendly gaming is possible online,” he says.

While one of his fellow winners opted to put his unopened jug of sauce on eBay, prompting bids from celebrity DJ Deadmau5 and ultimately netting $15,350 for himself and gamer-related charities, Wasman went the opposite route, opening the coveted bottle and sharing it with friends at a private Rick and Morty viewing party at Gods & Monsters’ Vault 5421 bar last Sunday night. Why open it instead of going for the big bucks?

“I have never been that guy who keeps things in the packaging. I want to play with it, hold it,” Wasman explains. “I had one of only four sauces in the world. I had to try it. Also, I wanted to be able to share the experience with friends and fans.” Besides, the bottle is stamped with an October 2017 expiration date. “A collector would sit on it way past that, letting it fester and go bad, and no one would be any better off for it,” says Wasman. “This isn’t Thor issue No. 1, it’s sauce, for crying out loud.”

Apparently, not everyone on the internet appreciates Wasman’s altruistic decision.

“I have had a barrage of folks telling me how stupid I am, how dumb that was, how much money I could have won,” Wasman says. “It’s a little daunting and overwhelming having so many people outside my friends and family so interested in what I am doing. That they care almost too much about sauce and what I do with it says more about them than me, I think.”

So, what does the sauce taste like? The taste is “incredible,” according to Wasman.

“Very strong. Stronger, in fact, than any of their current sauces. It starts with a strong and sweet teriyaki flavor, then it gives way to ginger and sesame, finally there is a slight heat from the peppers. It really is a unique flavor. I am ruined for other sauces now. For. Life.”

Having tried it for myself, I wouldn’t go quite that far; though the Szechuan does destroy McD’s standard sauce options, to my tastebuds it’s identical to the Iron Chef General Tso sauce sold in stores.

But with an established auction value of $242.65 per ounce, it was undoubtedly the most expensive condiment I’ve ever eaten, competing with the priciest caviar.

If you want to experience the holy grail of dipping sauces for yourself, the remaining half-jug – along with the customized case it came it – is now on eBay (at press time, it was up to $3,000), with 10 percent of the sale earmarked for Mojang’s Block by Block charity. nd back we go to Disney Springs, this time to the three-story floating fortress of seafood known as Paddlefish. The old Empress Lilly, a replica Mississippi riverboat named after Walt’s good lady – Lillian Bounds Disney – was given a thorough gut and contempo redesign by Levy Restaurants, who manage and operate this whale of a joint. We were led toward the second-floor bow, where wraparound windows proffer lovely views, but the din was akin to Ten10 Brewing’s on a Friday night. We asked to be moved to a quieter part of the ship and there, on the starboard side overlooking Lake Buena Vista and Rainforest Café’s fire-breathing volcano, we dined in relative calm. An elevator next to us seemed to attract the curious intent on ascending or descending to other levels of the restaurant, but it was a whole lot better than dealing with a sustained cacophony.

The menu, naturally, is tailored for the seafood lover, but the prices will have you seriously considering abandoning ship.

Sure, we loved the wee cornmeal-battered

handsy with the mess of shellfish before sopping up the Old Bay-seasoned liquid with the lone piece of cornbread. We considered asking for another, but the bread multilevel showcase rolls we were served at the onset of our meal did just fine. Oh, if you’re keen on seeing your seafood boil prepared, head to the first-floor bar area and gawk at the cooks manning the large steam kettles in the exhilobster corn dogs with sweet chili aioli, but bition kitchen. No, it’s not exactly riveting, the $16 price tag … not so much. Our genteel but the emanating wafts are heavenly.

THE WATERFRONT The fare coming out of the kitchen of this lakeside bar/restaurant isn’t just a notch above its Julie’s Waterfront days, but downright impressive. Duroc Korean pork belly with house kimchi, sesame-crusted ahi tuna with seaweed salad, and tuna poke bring an undeniable Asian bent to the menu, but fish camp classics like blackened catfish and stellar fish (haddock) and chips are worth consideration.

The Pie offers vivid, sensual, Romanstyle pizza al taglio (by the slice) to the fortunate denizens of College Park, so if you’re in the area, pop by for a squarish slab of potato pie (our fave), or a protein-packed “meat lover” with pepperoni, sausage, meatball, mortadella and prosciutto. Slices vary from day to day, but pies are also available in personal size (four slices) or large (eight slices).

TIN & TACO Hearty and filling tacos are the calling card for this bustling downtown taqueria. Eight bucks scores your choice of two tacos, or the same ingredients in a burrito, in a rice bowl, or tossed in a bag of Doritos. Stick to the tacos – the tortillas are sprinkled with cheddar and fried before being stuffed with sundry meats. Faves are the beefy “Tacosaurus” and “Taco Bomb.” Pass on the chips and queso. RASA ASIAN STREET FOOD Rasa’s focus is the best dishes from Malaysia’s hawker stalls and, for the most part, they succeed with such dishes as kari puffs, hakka noodles and “luse chicken,” greened in a marinade of cilantro and basil. The digs are slick, and the inviting bar begs for a cocktail program, though the sake, craft beer and wine crowd don’t seem to mind. MARKET TO TABLE RESTAURANT There’s no questioning the skill and technique used to fashion the dishes served at this Winter Garden resto. Chef Ryan Freelove has the chops to pull off proficiently braised lamb shank over truffle gnocchi, and crackling golden tilefish with a succotash of corn salsa and spelt. The menu is seasonal, with a focus on fresh, local and sustainable ingredients (some grown on the roof). On the sweeter end, a giant raspberry macaron filled with vanilla gelato is the way to go, and ideal for sharing. GAVIOTA SEAFOOD & FINE PERUVIAN CUISINE Gaviota brings mighty fine Peruvian cuisine to a revolving-door location in Thornton Park. Starters like anticuchos (grilled beef hearts) and ceviche of grouper impress as much as superb lomo saltado and rice dishes like arroz con pato (duck) and arroz con mariscos (fresh seafood). The Hitman’s Bodyguard

BY ST EVE SCHNEID ER OPENING THIS WEEK: The Hitman’s Bodyguard As Cecily Strong once

sarcastically declared at the White House Correspondents Dinner, “It was a great year for women. Just like always.” But this actually was a fairly decent summer when it came to representations of women in movies, with Wonder Woman leading the box office and some of the other hits exhibiting a rather progressive bent when it comes to issues of sex and gender.

In particular, what was Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 about but the terrible things some men do to women, and the need for other, better men to get in touch with their proverbial feminine side as counterbalance? And consider the movie’s most quoted line, Yondu’s confused but defiant battle cry, “I’m Mary Poppins, y’all!” On the surface, that gag seems like typical locker-room stuff: The guy doesn’t know he’s comparing himself to a chick, har har har! But upon closer consideration, the point is just the opposite – namely, that Yondu would be totally justified in so identifying, because Poppins is indeed a complete badass.

It could be one of the most genuinely genderfluid moments I’ve witnessed in a theater.

Which brings me to The Hitman’s Bodyguard, and my worries that the lucky streak might be over. Everything I’ve seen so far of this asshole-buddy action comedy portends more of the mutual attempted emasculation dudebros consider the height of entertainment. Respected protection agent Ryan Reynolds has to babysit his arch-nemesis, master hitman Samuel L. Jackson, so the latter can stay alive long enough to testify against an international criminal. And how are you going to spend that time but slapping each other around Three Stooges-style while assigning each other all manner of supposedly feminine characteristics? Even the movie’s poster is a

play on the one for The Bodyguard, with Jackson in the place of Whitney Houston as the damsel in distress. It’s the kind of thing Scrubs’ Dr. Cox would laugh his ass off at.

It also has the weekend entirely to itself as far as wide releases go, which means it’ll probably be considered a success on one level or another. To be fair, exhibitors at last March’s CinemaCon seemed enthusiastic, and the project had been plucked from the 2011 Black List of best unproduced scripts. Then again, know what else was on that year’s list?

foster the rave and EDM scenes still going strong here with a new generation of dance devotees. At the same time, RITM maintains their own very dedicated fanbase on a near-Deadhead level. They flock to RITM’s live shows to drink in techno-trance beats juxtaposed against a light show that challenges viewers’ ocular fortitude, all fronted by hype-alien Bunny’s pyrotechnic tricks and interactive performances that reach out and touch concertgoers in a very real way.

RITM’s reach extended beyond the dancefloor as they crossed over into the rock and pop worlds with ease in the ’90s, remixing tracks for the likes of the Smashing Pumpkins, Sarah McLachlan, BT, Paul Oakenfold, Stone Roses and Garbage. The RITM collective realized early on that most record labels wouldn’t be able to keep up with their prodigious output and seized the means of production, starting the Hallucination label, which Christophere says serves as “the home base for all of the music that was produced.” While Christophere and DJ Monk worked to put out music on the label, the band was simultaneously setting the tone for bigger, faster, louder live sets in the rave scene on par with Prodigy, triumphantly headlining the first Ultra events in Miami as well as EDC in California. RITM hit the road hard, taking their psychedelic alien musical carnival to audiences at festivals across the world until they disbanded in 2001.

If anyone can be said to have a signature, it’s Laetitia Sadier. The ever-sophisticated fingerprint that made Stereolab so singular carries over into her solo work.

But unlike the motorik lounge-pop of Stereolab, the measured effervescence of her latest vessel, Laetitia Sadier Source Ensemble, is less orbital and distinctly earthlier.

It’s music that’s decidedly left in both sensibility and politics. Atop Sadier’s sociopolitical commentary, her band’s breezy avant-pop is a wide-ranging international quilt of styles that – like the vocabulary of Stereolab – is brimming with jazz, Latin, vintage futurist keyboards and indie rock.

But it’s all synthesized without a trace of fusion or revivalism.

Befitting any appearance by her, let alone her only Florida appearance of this tour, a crowd deep with the city’s music literati turned out to see a living legend.

And that’s what they got, one who is still a creative, forward force.

But the sonic thrills really came from Orlando opener Acoqui, the reclusive act that’s now light years beyond its origins as a solo ambient outlet for Alberto Hernandez, perhaps best known as onehalf of Kanine Records’ act Viernes. As asserted by both this incredibly vivid performance and their newly released debut album (the excellent A Heart Fills This Way), their sound is a Cocteau Twins

dream on a shoegaze rush, only with more pop concision and punch. Made from all the right stuff, this band is generating songs and textures supreme enough to be one of the most exciting native acts to emerge in a long time.

For a barely active live act, Acoqui has amassed some of the city’s most credentialed players, with a collective résumé that includes Summerbirds in the Cellar, the Sh-Booms and Moon Jelly. With an all-star lineup that’s now all-local, this band is facing its most solid prospects yet.

They’ve got the goods and they’ve got the ensemble. If these stars can align, Acoqui could be Orlando’s next great band.

EASTER ISLAND, OAK HOUSE, EXPERT TIMING AND SOMEDAY RIVER, WILL’S PUB, AUG. 11

Athens came to Orlando for a night with well-regarded bands Easter Island and Oak House. Easter Island have impressed here before and continue to do so with a lavishly furnished indie-pop sound that’s gentle but large. Their music is a thing of sculpture and layer, unfolding like a ride through twilight clouds.

Oak House came with lots of Radiohead comparisons that are not without merit.

It’s due mainly to their defiance of stylistic convention and singer Gresham Cash’s markedly anguished Thom Yorkian ways.

But, at least live, they’re far less prone to wandering indulgence than the overrated kings of brood rock. Instead, Oak House flex muscle and wire to keep things more pointed and incisive, constantly pushing a nervy edge that will sometimes just give in and burst into a maelstrom that’s heady, complex and charged.

Among the local openers was Expert Timing, a trio that’s been rising in the ranks over the past year or so. Clear disciples of melodic ’90s indie rock, they deal in bright, yearning female-male vocals that ride big, chunky guitars. It all amounts to a substantial simplicity that makes them an immediate charm.

Also opening was Someday River, an indie-pop band previously known as Bellows – the one from Orlando, not Brooklyn. Luckily, their name change several years ago was just the beginning of their journey into their own. They’ve come an absolutely extraordinary way since their unfocused early days as Bellows, when I ravaged them a bit.

Today, Someday River are a trio capable of a whole lot of sonic depth and atmosphere with a tall, dreamy indie-pop sound. More importantly, their taste has tightened and sharpened notably, shedding much of their more pedestrian tendencies.

Like Lord Huron refracted on the rays of the Florida sun, their solidly anthemic sense of song has the ability to make crossover indie rock convincing. Nice to see a homegrown band finally find sure footing. baolehuu@orlandoweekly.com orlandoweekly.com

J. Cole has been tearing it up on stages across North America, touring behind his fourth studio album, 4 Your Eyez Only. With the Nitti Beatz-esque track “Immortal” and the trip-hop heavy “Change,” Cole ably demonstrates his range and capabilities as a producer, but what the record showcases, as a total conceptual package, is Cole’s ability to craft compelling and intimate lyrics. Following the fictitious life of James McMillan Jr., Cole immerses listeners in overlapping narratives of love, death, the pull of the streets, redemption and fatherhood. The album has been very well-received, and was certified platinum in April; around the same time, Cole released an associated documentary on the recording of the album with HBO that he co-directed. This Amway show comes at the tail end of a lengthy tour, so expect Cole’s set to be lean and roadhoned. – Jacob Galvin

Put aside any preconceptions you’ve picked up like a virus on the internet regarding a lack of musical authenticity on the part of the vaporwave micro-genre. Vaporwave is more than just Soundcloud hype: It’s an ethereal substrain of ambient dance music that beguiles the listener with its hazy, addictive hooks; it only then dawns on said listener that much of the catchiness comes from a subversive repurposing of sound and imagery from a neon ’80s past into a subtle critique of the poisonous effects of nostalgia and indeed the whole pop-culture-industrial-complex. In other words, dayglo goes dark damn quick. Orlando is fortunate enough to have an emerging roster of local vaporwave arch-conceptualizers, most of whom are young enough not to be constrained by reverence for their sound sources – which makes for even more anarchic and satisfying juxtapositions. Local webzine SR50 curates a night of shimmering sound featuring Dan Mason, Orov, Yosai and Immalaise. – Matthew Moyer

But listening to the song of the same name from El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico inspires us to sway and swirl on the cobblestones of Wall Street Plaza and hope for a festival of mamoncillo sometime soon in Orlando. Known worldwide as the “University of Salsa,” El Gran Combo has been in the business of putting out hits like “Gotas de Lluvia,” “Azuquita pa’ el Café” and “Me Liberé” under the direction of legendary pianist Rafael Ithier for more than 55 years. Famous musicians, like Andy Montañez, have learned the rhythm trade with this orchestra, while others like Celia Cruz and Héctor Lavoe have recognized its talents and asked for accompaniment. North America hasn’t been in the path of a total solar eclipse in 99 years, but on Monday, you’ll be able to see the total solar eclipse for a few minutes in Orlando.

Orlando Science Center and University of Central Florida host viewings of the total solar eclipse, which will reach 85 percent totality in Orlando and peak at about 2:51 p.m. At OSC’s main location, a general adult admission price of $20.95 will get you demonstrations, access to solar eclipse glasses and solar telescopes, and phone camera filters that will let you capture the eclipse. Dawson City: Frozen Time FILM

Located just below the Arctic Circle, Dawson City was a Canadian gold rush town so rugged that it burned down every year in its first nine years of existence. This settlement became the involuntary proprietor of a huge collection of films by dint of parsimony: As fortunes were made throughout the 19th century, the residents demanded entertainment, and in the early 1900s, Dawson City became part of the worldwide distribution of silent films. As remote as it was, it was often the last stop for a print, and the distributors didn’t want to pay to ship them all the way back. So there they sat, until a buried cache of 553 films was unearthed in 1978. Director Bill Morrison (Decasia) is known for his work with degraded and disintegrating film stock; Dawson City does feature some of the aged nitrate film prints, but functions more as a detective story about hiding and finding.
