Orlando’s creative community shocked by the deaths of comedian Matt Gersting and artist Morgan Steele

T

hough the world is still mourning the loss of musical icon Prince at age 57, hearts were broken here in Orlando due to the deaths of two local icons: Matt Gersting and Morgan Steele.

Gersting, who first rose to prominence as a musician – most notably in the Sugar Oaks and an early incarnation of the New Lows – before pursuing stand-up comedy, passed away at his College Park home on Wednesday, April 20.

Gersting was responsible for setting up the Shit Sandwich comedy showcase at the Bull & Bush, a move which was instrumental to the comedy renaissance the city has experienced over the past few years. He was also one of the founding organizers of the Orlando Indie Comedy Fest, which brought up-and-coming standups from all over the country to Orlando and put our comedy scene on the map. Gersting was known for his love of pinball and ’90s alt-rock, never missing an opportunity to instigate a singalong with friends and strangers or to leave his name on the high score board of many a local pinball machine. Will’s Pub is holding an informal memorial service this Saturday, April 30, from 2-8 p.m.

Artist Morgan Steele was known for his primitive visionary art, particularly his recurring original character “Rativa,” a spiritual inversion of Mickey Mouse. Significant examples of his work can be found gracing the walls of the restrooms at Austin’s Coffee in Winter Park, as well as the covers of Orlando Weekly’s “Best of Orlando 2008” and “You’re So Orlando” issues.

One of his supporters, Orlando City Commissioner Patty Sheehan, owns several of his works and called him a hilarious, prolific artist who would paint on anything and whose outfits made him the “local Hunter S. Thompson.”

“It’s been a horrible time for music and art in 2016,” says Sheehan. “It’s a shame.

Morgan was a good guy. … He really will be missed. His death leaves a hole.” Steele died of injuries sustained in a car accident the night of Saturday, April 23. him leave the house unless he was going to the Parramore Kidz Zone or to play basketball.

When he became the Orlando coordinator of My Brother’s Keeper, a program that targets opportunity gaps faced by young men of color, he would use his skills on the court for impromptu games with youth who were hanging out at the John H. Jackson Community Center.

Volcy says Nicolas’ parents didn’t understand the scale of what he was doing until after his death. They found photos of him with Gov. Rick Scott and First Lady Michelle Obama, and discovered his plans to start a social media campaign to keep the kids connected to the program.

Recently, he organized a trip to the Kennedy Space Center for a group of kids and was contacting guidance counselors to find at-risk youth.

Volcy says Nicolas was changing his speech and trading in his jeans for a more professional look that would inspire his neighborhood. Nicolas would tell Volcy he felt the pressure at his job, but was focused on creating connections to youth that would keep them away from gangs.

Volcy doesn’t understand his cousin’s killing; he doesn’t think anyone in Parramore wanted to harm Nicolas.

“They cut my boy short, far short of where he was trying to go,” Volcy says. “We lost somebody fighting for change, who didn’t leave where they were from, who changed himself so he could change his neighborhood.

We’re proud, but we’d rather have Gino than be proud at this point.”

At an Orlando City Council meeting last week, commissioners listened as Lisa Early, director of the city’s Families, Parks and Recreation Department, described Nicolas’ life. Early says she met Nicolas when he was about 14 years old at Howard Middle School. In her years at the city, she’s worked with kids like Nicolas who sometimes don’t have the basic resources to be successful in school. Her son, Samuel Sinyangwe, is the same age

ino Nicolas and his friends had no rose-tinted impressions about their neighborhood. The teenagers were all too familiar with the criminal violence and poverty playing out in the background of their lives in Parramore.

“I come from a place … where the life span is shorter than my haircut,” Nicolas, then 16, says in a video. “Where going to college is like winning the lottery.”

But throughout the 2008 video made by the city’s Parramore Kidz Zone program, there was also a sense of pride. Parramore was their community and the place where the people they loved the most lived. At the end of the video, the teenagers collectively repeated the phrase, “I come from Parramore.”

And even after he left the neighborhood, made it all the way to Florida State University and graduated last year, after he came back to head President Obama’s My Brother’s Keeper initiative in Orlando to help other kids like himself, and until his dying day, Nicolas would repeat to people a similar mantra: “I am Parramore.”

Nicolas, 24, was killed a week ago at the Landings at Carver Park apartment complex in Parramore in a driveby shooting. The same shooting killed Tanya Skeen, 46, who was putting away groceries in her apartment when she was hit by a stray bullet, and injured four other men, according to the Orlando Police Department. The men were standing in front of the apartments when a vehicle drove by and the people inside started shooting with multiple handguns.

“At this time, the intended target of the shooting is unknown,” OPD says. “There is no verified suspect vehicle description and no identified suspects at this time.”

As police try to find out who cut Nicolas’ life short, his family, friends and the community he worked with are grieving. Jurde Volcy says his cousin grew up in a typical Haitian home where his parents were strict and didn’t let

as Nicolas and works as a data scientist with Campaign Zero, a national platform that presents comprehensive policies to reduce the number of people killed by police.

“I saw my kid go off to Stanford right when he graduated, and I would see kids in the neighborhood, where the struggle was so deep and the hurdles that get thrown at them was so enormous,” she says. “My son went up with booster rockets on him and those kids have anchors.

To see Gino move forward on this positive trajectory was hopeful, and to see him cut down at this point in his life when he was doing remarkable things, it’s devastating. …

He was a hero, and to know that even he could succumb, it makes it hard for these kids to continue believing. But our job and our consistent message to them is to keep believing.”

After Nicolas’ death, some local leaders have tried to pinpoint it and other recent killings in the Parramore neighborhood on “black-on-black violence.” But as Matthew Nichter, a historical sociologist and professor at Rollins College explains, violence in poorer neighborhoods stems from myriad factors, including housing segregation, mass incarceration, concentrated poverty, increased unemployment rates, dilapidated public housing and lower funding for neighborhood schools.

“Those are the conditions that breed violence,” he says. “Instead of talking about the structural racism that causes this, we blame it on the culture, on people having the wrong mindset or attitude.”

Withney Simon says he became friends with Nicolas when they were both in the city program. They remained in touch even after Simon moved to Illinois for college, and one time when Simon had no money to buy food, Nicolas, who was thousands of miles away, ordered a box of pizza to be delivered to Simon’s home. Simon says he wants to continue Nicolas’ work because he doesn’t want his friend to have died in vain.

“I would never have thought of Gino dying,” he says.

“Not till God called him home. I’m sitting here and all I can picture is his face. I can’t believe he’s really gone.”

Nicolas’ funeral is 11 a.m. Saturday, April 30, at the Kingdom Church on Nowell Street.

Snappy comebacks Snap Downtown’s second opening is sexy, brash and playful – but not lightweight

or the second opening at Snap’s downtown satellite galleries, Patrick and Holly Kahn didn’t lean out. In the gallery spaces sited on the ground floor of a new apartment building, it would be very easy to simply hang what’s sometimes derisively called “couch art” – decorative canvases and photo prints with no real soul or artistic point of view. But with their usual grit, Snap has done the hard work of actual curation. Hewing to their own artistic point of view, in this second set of three exhibitions they introduce an international and local roster of artists, in a mix of media.

Innovative photography is foremost, as is Snap’s wont, but there’s also painting, sculpture and digital art. Much of it is sexy, brash and playful, yes; that’s also Snap’s style, and frequent Snap opening attendees won’t be let down. But disposable pop this isn’t. The centerpiece show, Constructed Abstractions, bites into the viewer’s psyche with pretty teeth that are nonetheless sharp.

or dislocates familiar spaces by remixing them almost unto unrecognizability. Reine Paradis also sneaks some medicine into her spoonful-of-sugar photos – it’s so easy to succumb to the poppy gloss of her highly manipulated self-portraits that one might gloss right over their essentially frantic tone, as the photographer-as-model slots herself into various attractive yet dangerous positions. And Stephane Fedorowsky’s photocollages are spooky dreamscapes, with that haunting ability of the surreal to seem truer than the real. Soothing the brain after all that skewed reality, Shelley Lake’s digital installation recalls a 21st-century Rothko, glowing with a technological assist.

The “abstractions” of the title don’t align with the Art History 101 definition – there’s plenty of representation here – rather, perhaps, to the preoccupied state induced by the bright forms and volumes of Paradis’ self-referentiality, Hargrove’s evocations of place, Federowsky’s introspection and Lake’s smooth serenity. If you feel in need of some grounding after allowing these works to wash over you, just elevator up to the rooftop pool deck, where the classic art-opening drinky singles mingle will bring you back to earth. jyoung@orlandoweekly.com

Spring has fully sprung, making

this the perfect time to spread a blanket on the shore and catch up with old friends. It’s been 15 months since Theatre Downtown exited their longtime home on Orange Avenue, and the company has not only survived their time as a “gypsy company,” they’re celebrating with a party – Charles Busch’s Psycho Beach Party, to be precise, playing at the Venue through May 1.

I stopped in for last Saturday night’s show and got an update from producers Frank and Fran Hilgenberg on the future of Theatre Downtown.

The recipe behind Busch’s campy comedy hasn’t changed much in the 10 years since Theatre Downtown last staged it, or indeed since it was first presented at their former venue in 1992 by Per4mAnts with Bill Haire. It’s a lightweight cocktail of 1960s teen exploitation and 1970s slasher horror, served with a salty rim of sexual liberation. Chicklet (BeeJay Aubertin-Clinton) is a Gidget-like goodie two-shoes who only wants king surfer Kanaka (Alan Brown) to teach her to shoot the curls. Then her multiple personality disorder emerges, transforming Chicklet into Malibu’s most murderous dominatrix.

Mix in Chicklet’s abusive mom (Carol Adubato), a runaway Hollywood bombshell (Deena Flowers) and a pair of ambiguously gay beach bums (Scott Gilbert, Coletyn P. Hentz), and you have all the ingredients for a smutty satire of the sanitized image of the Beach Boys era.

Frank Hilgenberg’s direction is enlivened

by Frankie & Annette-approved hula-hoop choreography from Darci Ricciardi, and without any scenery, Roy C. Brown’s lighting and Fran Hilgenberg’s costumes do the work of shifting locations and establishing the era. Aubertin-Clinton chews his way through Busch’s overwrought mono-

The remainder of the cast (particularly its male members) is a bit too stiff to capture the same comedic spark displayed by Daniel Cooksley and Stephen Pugh in the 2006 production, and the climax’s once-radical plea for same-sex marriage now seems anachronistic, but Busch’s snarky dialogue still generates grins.

“Usually you pick your shows first because you have a place,” Fran told me after the show, when I asked why they chose to resurrect Psycho Beach Party now.

“The Venue had an opportunity for us to come in here for three weekends, so it was, ‘What can we put in there that will work in there?’ It’s a great pre-Fringer.” Added Frank, “We thought it would fit this venue because of the burlesque and the dance that Blue has created here – it would be a good match.”

Frank and Fran refreshed me on their company’s financial situation, as they continue to search for an affordable permanent home. “We’re still paying off bills every month,” Frank told me. “People think it was all over when we moved out of the building, but we’re spending $1,200 to $1,500 a month just to maintain bills for storage and such.”

Despite the expense, Theatre Downtown has now presented four shows since their eviction. “It’s not cheap. We’re spending on this for nine shows what we would pay for a month’s worth of rent, and this is as good a deal as you’re going to get in town.”

On the other hand, Fran admits, “When we had the building it wasn’t all roses either;

then you’re constantly producing to pay those ongoing bills.”

Visiting the Venue right now is an object lesson in the onslaught of development in downtown’s Ivanhoe district, as the surrounding blocks that once held warehouses have been bulldozed down to bare lots.

Ironically, the Florida Hospital-owned building Theatre Downtown was rushed out of remains standing.

“The only thing that I’ve seen them do is put up a bunch of propaganda on the windows, and I think that had to do with people going by after almost a year and a half going, ‘Why the hell did you kick them out when they could still be there producing?’” Frank said. “That whole episode cost thousands and thousands of dollars. We asked them to stay and they said, ‘No, February 1st [2015] we start construction.’”

Though they weren’t themselves selected in the Fringe lottery this year, Theatre Downtown alumni are involved in several festival offerings, including Jason Skinner’s Shatter and Carol Adubato’s One-Duhhh Woman. Meanwhile, Theatre Downtown will be gearing up for a production of Terrence McNally’s It’s Only a Play, opening June 10 and running through June 26 at Rollins College’s Fred Stone Theatre.

Auditions were held Monday for director Tim DeBaun’s production, which uses the newly revised script from Matthew Broderick’s recent Broadway revival. (“I’m sure there will be a lot of Hamilton references in it,” Fran joked.)

T

he first thing my family did after we settled into our new Central Florida house almost a decade ago was look for the one thing that reminded us of home – tacos.

We had left the comfort of Los Angeles and its elote carts, Cal-Mex burritos and King Taco for a strange land where there were few paisanos and afternoons were ruined by every-single-day rain showers and insect barrages. Florida seemed impossibly green and humid compared to semi-arid L.A., but it was barren in terms of street tacos, those greased double-corn tortilla pockets filled with carne asada, carnitas, pork al pastor, lengua, cabeza or maybe sesos (brains!), topped with finely chopped cilantro, onions and that radioactive-colored salsa that leaves you moqueando, wiping your boogers with tiny, inadequate napkins.

What we did find in those early years was interesting, to say the least. There was of course the Mexican™ experience of Taco Bell, which has since surpassed its stereotypical Chihuahua dog with bigger and grander things like the Quesarito or the Quesalupa or whatever other concoction of ground beef, sour cream, iceberg lettuce and cheddar cheese they’ve decided to hawk this month. Those who need a fourthmeal fix probably appreciate the quasi-Mexican restaurant chain’s food antics, but they fall far short when you have a street taco craving.

The same goes for the group of Mexican-inspired restaurants that tend to congregate around colleges and universities. The Chipotles, Tijuana Flats and drinking holes of the world serve you tacos on flour tortillas accompanied by an inordinate amount of 2-for-1 margaritas amid a backdrop that includes a sombrero or the latest cultural appropriation trend, a Dia de Los Muertos skull. White Americans have progressed from supermar-

ket taco kits to chain restaurants to, now, restaurants that specialize in designer tacos serving the most “authentic” Mexican cuisine. Designer tacos are $4.50 each (!), but damn it if they don’t look Instagram-worthy placed on a wooden cutting board with a kale garnish.

Spaces for “authentic” Mexican food seem to be reserved for white people, though, as Gustavo Arellano, the writer of the ¡Ask a Mexican! column at OC Weekly, details in his book Taco USA: “A succession of white authors and acolytes have prodded Americans out of their Mexican-food comfort zone, challenging the public to not only taste new dishes but also to prepare them themselves,” he writes. “In the process they introduced a fraudulent concept to the question of Mexican cuisine in this country: the idea that the food they documented was ‘authentic,’ while the dishes offered at your neighborhood taco stand or sit-down restaurant were pretenders to be shunned.”

The food at all the restaurants above can be good, sometimes delicious and even innovative, but once you’ve tasted the manna from taco heaven, you’re just not content with anything else. Taco heaven in our case includes $1.50 tacos,

“seedy” street corners, aguas frescas, a shrine to la Virgen de Guadalupe near the cash register, people who’ve just finished clubbing and bad Yelp reviews about the decor.

Eventually my family did find the perfect street taco – 45 minutes away from our house, in a small community called Wahneta near Winter Haven. At our favorite place you sit outside on worn wooden benches and the vendor doesn’t even have a name for the business, but I’d wager they’re the best tacos in Central Florida. People drive hours to sit in the shade of the white tarp to get a taste of home.

As Arellano tells the Los Angeles Times, traditional street tacos, Cal-Mex and Tex-Mex inventions, and designer tacos are part of a “big, inclusive kitchen” and “all are welcome who add something to the melting pot.” But when you get a chance, head down to get street tacos at local spots like Tortas El Rey on OBT (like the carne asada tacos con todo pictured below) or the Ocoee Taco Company. Once you enter the gates of taco heaven, you won’t be able disentangle yourself from the warm embrace of those corn-tortilla angels.

his is a wonderful time to eat tacos in Orlando – partly because we have so many options, and partly because we’re able to embrace a multiplicity of opinions. People who have extremely strong feelings about cheap, authentic street-meat tacos can coexist with those who make a run for the border every afternoon to grab a Crunchwrap Supreme and a Meximelt. Those who won’t touch a tortilla that wasn’t kneaded in the back of the store with house-nixtamalized maize and carefully garnished with locally raised greens and meats can live happily alongside folks who can’t resist an overstuffed burrito bursting with lettuce, black olives, queso and sour cream. There’s even room for those who hold a fondness for the packet-seasoned ground beef in a hard corn-chip shell served to us in our childhoods.

It’s a many-taco’d world, and yes, we can all get along.

So here are a few of our favorite things – 20, to be exact, listed here in alphabetical order – a kaleidoscopic cornucopia of every type of taco we love. If you eat two a day starting the Wednesday this issue hits the street, you can try them all before Cinco de Mayo. – Jessica Bryce Young

Punks get popped An unlikable band of yuccies meets their match when they tangle with murderous neo-Nazis

ight from the start, we don’t like the characters in Green Room. Four 20-somethings, ragged and in need of several showers, wake up hungover inside their van, which has veered off the road into a cornfield. Two of them – Sam (Alia Shawkat) and Pat (Anton Yelchin) – leave to siphon gas from cars nearby. Hey, at least they’re resourceful.

They call themselves a punk rock band, but unless my ears deceive me they play terrible heavy metal. Soon a guy with a mohawk (David W. Thompson) interviews the band, which also includes Reece (Joe Cole) and Tiger (Callum Turner). They insist they’re “too pure” to go digital or promote themselves via social media. All

that matters is the energy of performing, they say. So now they’re not just miscreants, they’re also pretentious and need to get over themselves.

These early details are important because they show how unlikable the main characters are, and yet soon enough Green Room captivates us with tension and has us rooting for these lowlifes to survive. It’s a fascinating and unexpected twist that would seem difficult to pull off. Writer-director Jeremy Saulnier does this the only way he could: by pitting the band, aptly named “The Ain’t Rights,” against a group of neo-Nazi skinheads who’re holding them captive after Pat stumbles upon a freshly killed corpse. Soon it becomes obvious that the Ain’t Rights, along with sympathizing neo-Nazi Amber (Imogen Poots), aren’t going to make it out alive.

What’s unique about Green Room is the business-like approach the skinheads use to plot the murders. The owner of the remote

Oregon bar in which they’re held, Darcy (Patrick Stewart), insists the deaths must look accidental, or at least like self-defense.

Stewart plays Darcy with little emotion: cold, soft-spoken and calculating, worried about his bottom line and how it’ll all look to the outside world. The last thing he’ll tolerate is indiscriminate bloodshed. If you only know Stewart as Professor Xavier in X-Men or Capt. Picard in Star Trek, you’re in for a real treat here.

Some of the violence is grisly and uncomfortable, but not to the point that it takes you out of the story. In fact, it’s fittingly savage for the brutal and immoral world in which these characters live. Guns, machetes, fire extinguishers, switchblades and even ferocious dogs get in on the action, and because it’s lit in such a grim (dare I say “punk rock”inspired?) way, the movie retains an earthy tone that allows the audience to embrace its horrifying reality.

But really, it’s the harsh precision of Darcy and his men that makes this intriguing. The story almost functions as a procedural of how to kill innocents and make it look like it’s their own fault, which is a notably compelling and dark premise on which to base a movie. Top it off with a great performance from Stewart, and Green Room becomes a tense thriller you won’t want to miss.

Keanu In a world where Prince dies at age 57 and Bernie Sanders turns out to be just another vindictive, self-interested jerk, it’s easy to become jaded. But every now and then, a movie project comes along the core elements of which simply resist cynicism. To wit; Key & Peele + Cat. Key & Peele + Cat! Key & Peele + Cat! What’s not to love about the greatest comedy duo of our time taking on vicious ganglords to retrieve their precious pet kitten? It’s like The Ransom of Red Chief in reverse, dawg! (I totally bet that was the pitch meeting.) Plus, the director is Peter Atencio, who worked on the duo’s now-classic sketch series. So yeah, not a single reason to scoff here. Even Prince would have agreed! (R) Mother’s Day Having capitalized on every holiday you hope will be good but always sucks, the makers of New Year’s Eve and Valentine’s Day now take aim at a holiday you probably just consider a big pain in the ass. No, emotional investment in the subject matter probably isn’t the main hook of this multigenerational ensemble comedy, which purports to star “four of the biggest stars in the world.” And who might they be, pray tell? hroughout their 16-year run, music writers and fans have charged Tokyo Police Club with various counts of music labels: indie, punk, power punk, alternative rock and even neo-post-punk revival.

But the band that broke out of Ontario, Canada, in 2005 has likely added to that list with its April 2016 release, the EP Melon Collie and the Infinite Radness: Part One, which is chock-full of melodic verses and hook-filled choruses.

When Tokyo Police Club – which since 2006 has played numerous big-bang festivals such as Coachella, Lollapalooza, Glastonbury, Bonnaroo and Roskilde – storms the stage of the Social on April 27, vocalist-bassist Dave Monks promises a steady mix of the “old songs as well as the new.”

Speaking from Boston, Monks (who,

along with drummer Greg Alsop, dropped out of college to become a professional musician) says the band played the Social in 2013 and wanted to get back to what he calls a strong base of fans. The band also has a good friend living here and appreciates our vibrant music scene.

“We just want to hit everywhere we can and get down to Florida and get to our fans there,” says Monks, who co-founded the group in 2005 while playing for fun in a basement after the four bandmates had disbanded a previous group, Suburbia. “In Orlando, we get a lot of support.”

Monks guarantees that audiences on the current tour will hear a sound that departs from some of the band’s previous works, more melding of guitars with synthesizers; the new songs are atmospheric, leaning on layered harmonies and driving rhythms.

There are also touches of anthemic rock and even forays into waltz time.

Although the show is built around current work, Monks says that they will also play plenty of deep cuts from the back cata-

log. “We’re doing a good run of the old songs as well as the new. We really try to include older tunes, like ‘Listen to the Math,’” he hints, referring to the affecting mid-tempo ballad off their first album, 2008’s Elephant Shell.

Tokyo Police Club’s Champ (2010) was a more crafted indie album, and in 2014, Forcefield was even more intricate, complete with a three-part, nine-minute opening cut, “Argentina.” With hints of Cheap Trick, They Might Be Giants, the Lightning Seeds and Death Cab for Cutie in their sound, Tokyo Police Club intersperses poppy lyrics with their own personal stories and life experiences, and that comes across in their shows, says Monks. It’s part of the band’s effort to make the audience part of the show, not just aural voyeurs.

“We often hear a lot of people sing to every song when we’re on tour. We like to connect with the crowd, and there’s a lot of intermingling,” he says.

But for 2016 and their current tour, Monks says Tokyo Police Club has worked to make each show different and more crowd-friendly.

At a recent show, he says, the band started their encore from the back of the venue.

Monks concludes, “It’s a super-accessible show. It’s specifically engineered to be fun and enjoyable. I love Orlando and hope to see everyone there.” music@orlandoweekly.com

global music icons, but a key figure was also lost here. To the local scene, Matt Gersting was a longtime fixture as a player in notable bands like the Sugar Oaks and an all-around smart fan. Later, he took on stand-up, becoming a vital mover in ushering the Orlando indie comedy scene into its current era of distinction. But to me, he was a friend. Orlando “It” band Sales has been one of those stories of modern ascendancy that bucks the traditional grind. First, they were beneficiaries of that specious little thing called early internet hype. Then, rather than cut their teeth on their own streets, they opted to do it on the road. Before their recent album release show (April 20, Will’s Pub), the last time I saw them play here was almost two years ago.

Different things work for different acts, but Sales has managed to conjure mystique in the way they’ve conducted themselves so far. I’ve had more out-of-town music people – all prominent insiders – ask me about them than any band in years. Now, the word is unquestionably out because their latest show maxed the house with bodies and buzz.

Between the 2014 show, where I noted the promise of their music but questioned their stage-worthiness, and now, not much has evolved in their live presentation.

They’re better guitar players, but that’s only inches in such a minimal pop schema.

Lauren Morgan’s singing is good and is both their music’s heart and its most finished dimension. But, curiously, neither their live sonic presence nor their visual atmosphere is any deeper.

Despite all this, however, their music is resonating with people in a way that’s truly exciting. And it’s testament to their effective musical distillation. But that economy can toe the line between artfully restrained and just plain basic, depending on the context. On record, they succeed by striking the former. On stage, the scales tilt the other way. But with a little more thought and craft, it doesn’t have to be that way.

The latest Southern Fried Sunday (April 17, Will’s Pub) was one of the most indie editions seen so far, with none of the featured acts sitting squarely on the roots music bedrock upon which the venerable concert series is built. But because of the quality, it worked.

The touring headliner was Chicago’s the Heligoats. Although it’s a four-piece band live, it’s the vehicle of frontman Chris Otepka, an interesting character whose lyrical obliqueness even spilled over into

offbeat between-song banter, constantly obfuscating the line between truth and imagination. Making it all even more dizzying are the layers and density of his thoughts, which spark with whim like a swarm of fireflies squeezed into a little jar.

In vocal style, he’s somewhere in the vicinity between Jeff Mangum (Neutral Milk Hotel) and John Darnielle (Mountain Goats). In words, he’s endearing, funny and perplexing, all in rapid succession, like a sharp mind with a dial stuck on a different frequency and a broken OFF button.

Behind the irrepressible scramble and sprawl of Otepka’s singing was the nice counterbalance of sturdy, vaguely rootsy indie rock that motors reliably and knows when to crest and swell with seriousness.

They take enough left turns to be colorful but move with a compass calibrated enough to avoid cul-de-sacs. And it was one of those performances that converted the room.

An opening surprise was Zoya Zafar, a relatively unknown local making her debut with both the concert series and the venue. Although she’s acoustic, she’s not conventionally folk. Her music is minimal but it’s not stark, with an atmosphere that’s velvet and a voice of real presence.

Her warm and sonorous singing exhales the smoke of classic jazz singers. Even in spite of a subdued mien and drift, Zafar’s alluring voice is one of those forces that can’t help but arrest. Funk may be the wrong musical style to evoke in an item about string quartet Brooklyn Rider, but we can’t stop hearing Sly and the Family Stone as we think about this show. “It’s a family affair,” all right; brothers Colin and Eric Jacobsen (violinist and cellist, respectively) have formed the backbone of the ensemble since its formation 10 years ago. (Violinist Johnny Gandelsman and violist Nicholas Cords lock in to complete the quad laser.) And also performing at this show is esteemed folk vocalist Aoife O’Donovan – who happens to be Eric Jacobsen’s fiancée. Last year, however, the Orlando Philharmonic tapped Eric Jacobsen as its new music director, and Orlando’s gain is Brooklyn’s loss – this will be his last performance with the group, as touring and recording conflict with his new duties leading the orchestra. But it’s not all gloom and finality, especially since this adventurous performance will be in the relatively relaxed environs of the Plaza Live, not the Dead Bob. Brooklyn Rider has always been as comfortable on a South by Southwest stage as a Lincoln Center concert hall – in 2010, Vice compared Brooklyn Rider to “motocross daredevils who never screw up a stunt.” Let’s help our town’s new maestro stick the landing. – Jessica Bryce Young

Orlando noise-rock band the Glorious Rebellion keeps the heat on the street with fairly regular area performances, often appearing alongside heavy-hitting touring names like KEN Mode, Holly Hunt, Black Tusk, Black Cobra and Jucifer.

Even with all that, though, little prepared us for the bare-knuckle impact of their raging new record. Euphoric – TGR’s first extended player and only release since their debut 7-inch in 2014 – is a major-league leap for the band. Merging thuggish rock in the septic vein of bands like Unsane, Whores and Helmet with a greasy, bluesy Southern groove, this ax-grinding recording is a big, misanthropic beast and easily the nastiest to come out of the city this year. To make the release event a bruiser for the books, the band of honor has called on a strong supporting gang of homegrown muscle that notably includes stars like doom-sludge lords Hollow Leg and blistering metal punks Moat Cobra. It’s gonna get scuzzy. – Bao Le-Huu

Wicked Little Town: A Hedwig Cabaret THEATER

When the earth was still flat and the clouds made of fire, there was a stylish punk rocker by the name of Hedwig. Her life, chronicled in the hit musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch, is a tragic tale of sacrifice and communism, of love and loss, of surgery and a very angry inch. With the help of Orlando theater veteran David Lee and friends, the Abbey hosts a night of her poetic tracks – which were totally stolen by Tommy Gnosis – while also doubling as a(nother) benefit for the cancer patientassisting Barber Fund. This isn’t the first time that Lee’s brought the Eastern European diva to the Orlando stage, having done so back in 2002, marking the first time the show made it to Central Florida. It’s not a full production this time around, more of a spliced-together cabaret of sorts, but it’s just enough to satiate this wicked little town. – Kim Slichter 7 p.m. | The Abbey, 100 S. Almost exactly 26 years ago, Prong released one of the most tightly wound, surgically effective, gloriously brutal thrash albums ever made. That Beg to Differ came at the tail end of the Golden Age of Thrash was irrelevant, as the New York trio was both closing the book on underground thrash and opening the door to a new wave of “urban metal” that took the unrelenting power of ’80s metal and fused it with a darker, more modern approach. The Three Headed Moron Tour Though Spacebar’s Wednesday night comedy show features top local talent on the regular, they’ve also become the No. 1 booker for underground out-of-town comedy over the past year or so. Comics who are not quite big enough for the Improv feature at Spacebar on a regular basis, and tonight’s show brings the return of Atlanta/L.A.’s Dave Stone, who last played there in November 2015. Stone’s résumé is top-notch, with appearances on The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson, Last Comic Standing, Squidbillies and LA Weekly’s 2012 “12 Comics to Watch” list. Joining him for this tour are Ryan Singer, a frequent guest on Marc Maron’s “WTF” podcast, and Andy Sandford, who has appeared on Conan and Aqua Teen Hunger Force. The three comedians are all very strong performers and poised to break big in the next few years. B Y D A N S AVA G E I am a trans man and I have no love life. But I did just hook up with a friend two nights ago. It was the first time I’ve had sex in more than a year.

My problem is that it was a “one-time thing.” I’m furious with myself for giving that away for what amounted to a hookup, and thoroughly sorry for myself for it being a “one-time thing,” because it nearly always is. I feel thoroughly unlovable and dejected right now. I was raised a Boston Irish Catholic, and I have PTSD from my parents being difficult. I hope the issue is tied to fallout from my upbringing – because that’s something everyone has and those things, while not entirely fixable, are manageable and not so visible. I worry it’s not that, though. I worry my being trans is the first problem a potential partner sees. I am a man with a twat – a forlorn, underused twat at that.

Not Often Picked, Everyone Not Interested Sexually

Buck Angel is a public speaker, a filmmaker, an activist and a trans man who famously and fearlessly bills himself as “the man with a pussy.” I passed your letter on to him because who better to answer a question from a man with a twat than the man with a pussy?
