IN MEMORIAM: THE ORLANDO 49 Every week between now and the one-year anniversary of the Pulse Nightclub shootings, Orlando Weekly will profile a person killed on June 12, 2016. This week: Geraldo A. Ortiz Jimenez.

Just hours before heading out to the gay nightclub Pulse, Geraldo Ortiz Jimenez was hitting the gym.

An avid gym rat, Ortiz, known as “Drake” to his friends, wouldn’t even let up on his workout routine while he was on vacation. Just after seeing him, his friends would later learn on social media that Ortiz Jimenez and 48 others had been killed during a mass shooting at Pulse on June 12.

“You’ll be missed at the gym here in PR [Puerto Rico],” his friend Wil Iglesias wrote on Facebook.

The 25-year-old was visiting Orlando to see a Selena Gomez concert at the Amway Center, something he posted about for months on Facebook.

Originally from the Dominican Republic and currently a college student studying law at the Universidad del Este in Carolina, Puerto Rico, Ortiz made the trip specifically to see his favorite singer.

posted videos singing along to Gomez’s music on his social media accounts. That weekend, while in Orlando, he posted a picture to his Instagram account as he posed with the singer’s wax figure while visiting Madame Tussauds.

“With the love of my life,” Ortiz wrote in Spanish, pretending to give the singer a kiss on the cheek.

Tiffany Ortiz, his niece, told the New York Times he had talked about the Orlando show nonstop since he bought the tickets a few months beforehand.

“He loved her, he absolutely loved her,” she said.

She said her uncle was a very sweet guy, a sentiment many friends echoed on his social media accounts, calling Ortiz a brother, a sweetheart and a great human being.

“He always made everyone laugh and he was very kind of everyone,” Tiffany Ortiz told the Times.

Ortiz seemed to take the lyrics from one of his favorite Gomez songs, “Kill ’Em With Kindness,” to heart. Just a few weeks before his trip to Orlando he posted a video on his Instagram account which showed him feeding an abandoned, crying kitten.

“This kitten broke my heart,” he wrote, describing how he shared his own meal with the stray.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a noose mailed to the office of Orange-Osceola State Attorney Aramis Ayala after she announced she wouldn’t pursue the death penalty under her administration. Shortly after her announcement in March, state attorney’s office employees opened an envelope addressed to Ayala that contained an index card with a noose made of green twine taped to the card.

Ayala, who is the first African-American to be elected state attorney in Florida, has received other lynching threats, including one from a Seminole County Clerk of the Court who posted on Facebook that Ayala should “get the death penalty” and be “tarred and feathered if not hung from a tree.”

Artiles, R-Miami, resigned after charges that he violated Senate conduct rules when he berated Sen. Audrey Gibson, a black Democrat from Jacksonville, last week at a Tallahassee bar, calling her “girl” and “bitch.” Artiles also referred to other Republican senators as “niggas.” Artiles seemed ready to fight the charges until a story from the Miami Herald revealed Artiles’ political committee hired a former Hooters “calendar girl” and a Playboy model as paid political consultants.

The two women reportedly have no experience, but did go on at least one fishing trip in Key West, where one of them posted on Instagram, “Caught 12 dolphins and got so excited that I threw up ... Jk I was just drunk. #ThanksFrank.”

Hundreds of people in Orlando joined more than 600 cities across the world on Earth Day in the March for Science, a movement dedicated to defending science in a time when many feel basic facts are under attack. The thousands of scientists and supporters who gathered on April 22 say President Donald Trump’s policies, rollback of environmental regulations and budget cuts would threaten work on important issues, such as climate change. Trump, who once tweeted that climate change was a hoax, said in a statement Saturday, “We should remember that rigorous science depends not on ideology, but on a spirit of honest inquiry and robust debate.”

No bear hunts will happen in Florida for at least two years after the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission agreed public support was not as high for another hunt. 100 DAYS OF DONALD TRUMP And the resistance that’s beating him Saturday marks the hundred-

day point for President Donald Trump.

It’s an arbitrary demarcation, to be sure – though one the Trump campaign embraced in a hundred-day “contract” with the American voter – but this is the period in which presidents tend to be their most popular and their administrations most active.

As such, they’re a good window into how effective a presidency will be.

Trump’s first hundred days, by any objective measure, has been unequivocally disastrous. Ignore the polling (40 percent approval in an NBC/Wall Street Journal poll, the lowest ever recorded in that poll’s 100-day mark and about 20 points lower than Barack Obama was in 2009). Ignore, too, the growing Russia scandal from which the administration has been unable to escape: the lies that cost National Security Adviser Michael Flynn his job, the FBI and congressional investigations into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Putin’s government. Even ignore the racists, white nationalists and unqualified hacks installed into the highest levels of government, not to mention the avalanche of conflicts of interests that surround the president everywhere he goes and the narcissistic Twitter tantrums sparked by even the slightest criticism.

What has he accomplished? In short, he put a guy on the Supreme Court. No small accomplishment, but that had less to do with Donald Trump than with Mitch McConnell’s ruthlessness, first in refus-

It won’t get better. It will only deteriorate, become more unstable; the best case is that Trump limps along and manages to be utterly feckless, somehow steering clear of catastrophe until after the 2018 midterms, when an angry opposition dismantles unified GOP control of D.C. and puts a check on Trump’s power.

There’s a lot of work between now and then. But the good news is the seeds of that victory have already been planted. You see them in the recent special elections in Kansas and Georgia, which revealed an energized progressive base that nearly stole two very red congressional seats. You see them in last weekend’s March for Science or in the massive Women’s March or in the countless other protests and rallies that have taken place all over the country. You see it in recordsmashing donations to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and the swell of angry phone calls to members of Congress who want to dismantle Obamacare.

More than 100 wildfires have scorched our ‘abnormally dry’ state, and it could get worse

he small brush fire had only spread through 10 acres near the border of Chuluota and Oviedo when Robert Yarborough got to the scene. The firefighter called in the blaze around 1:45 p.m. on April 8 and started working with a small crew from the Florida Forest Service and two tractor-plow units to contain it. Quickly, they realized they were outnumbered.

Within two hours, the brush fire had been whipped by the winds into a towering frenzy of flames and smoke that ran through 165 acres. More than a hundred people were evacuated from nearby Girl Scouts Camp Mah-Kah-Wee before it was

charred to the ground. A lake slowed the inferno, but the breeze gave it strength to plow through in a scorching path toward homes in the Live Oak Reserve community. Yarborough and his crew had been joined by 150 firefighters, three helicopters, eight bulldozers and six engines to stand between the fire and further destruction.

“It was very extreme,” Yarborough says.

“Nobody ever got put in any danger fighting it, but it was very nerve-racking. At that point, you just fall back on your training and hope everything works out.”

After working into the night, firefighters managed to stop the fire from burning down any houses, though it did get close – the flames licked trees and bushes that were inches from backyards into a blackened crisp.

Last week, Yarborough and a small crew were hosing down the final hot spots that remained behind homes to prevent a sec-

ond fire. With ashes on his face, he looked up for a second and wondered aloud if the rain would come that day.

State officials have been pondering the same question as Florida’s drought conditions continue to worsen, creating the dry ground needed to kindle small blazes into fiery rampages. Several fires have hit Central Florida already, including an aggressive 475-acre brush fire near International Drive and Daryl Carter Parkway that spread smoke along Interstate 4. Last Monday, a fire covering more than 7,000 acres in Naples was just 50 percent contained. In Orange County, less than an inch of rain has fallen in the past month and a half, and its surrounding counties are only slightly better. This has prompted a burn ban for Orange, Seminole, Osceola and 14 other counties.

warning for the 8 million residents living in its 16-county jurisdiction, which stretches from south Orlando to Key West.

Earlier in April, Gov. Rick Scott declared a state of emergency after a rash of wildfires and the potential for more. Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam said at a news conference in Tallahassee last week that this is the most active fire season Florida has seen since 2011, with firefighters battling 106 active wildfires covering 124,000 acres.

And all this is before Florida’s fire season peaks in late April, May and June.

Officials say people should expect more fires and further water restrictions as the state waits for relief via summer rains.

While most people agree the drought is a recurring weather pattern, some climate experts and environmentalists have gone even further, saying warmer temperatures could intensify Florida’s drought into something more dangerous.

“A year ago, we were having record rainfall, we had flooding issues, discharge issues – much of the state was dealing with the issue and the problems surrounding too much water,” Putnam said. “And 365 days later, we find ourselves dealing with the problems of not enough water and drought. … Extremes beget extremes.”

J

ust how bad is Florida’s drought?

It’s not bad enough that the governor has asked people to pray for rain.

Back in July 1998, the dry season was so nightmarish it was described as “Florida’s hellfire.” Thousands of fires burned across the state, scorching more than 450,000 acres. Flagler County’s 35,000 residents were all forced to evacuate. In a desperate moment, Gov. Lawton Chiles even banned fireworks and asked Floridians to “join me and pray for rain.”

Florida’s current drought has not reached that level. Not yet, anyway.

The U.S. Drought Monitor shows that parts of Central and Southwest Florida have intensified to a severe drought this month, with surrounding areas having a moderate drought. Chris Fenimore, with the National Centers for Environmental Information, wrote the latest report for Florida and says more places in Northeast Florida and the Panhandle are showing signs of being “abnormally dry.”

“We’re talking about 50 percent or less than normal precipitation,” he says.

“Typically with a severe drought, you can expect water restrictions and shortages, fires, and damaged crops and pastures.”

Fenimore says severe droughts like the one in Central Florida usually happen once every 10 years.

“We certainly can expect more intense drought episodes as we’re entering a warm-

er world,” he says. “You’ll also probably see more intense flooding and downpour as the climate changes.”

The last rainfall to really hit Florida was in October, when Hurricane Matthew ripped through the state’s east coast, says David Zierden, a professor at Florida State University who is also the state’s climatologist. This past fall and into early winter, Zierden says, weak conditions from the La Niña climate pattern, which makes the Pacific Ocean cooler and Southern states drier, set the stage for Florida’s drier winter.

Lake Okeechobee, which had an overflow problem last year after a wet summer, has now dropped its water level below the minimum range.

“We’re having a very active wildfire season, which is certainly concerning,” he says.

“But June will be the recovery month with afternoon showers. It should be a shortterm thing if the summer rainy season is as good as usual. If the summer doesn’t produce and we go through a normal dry season again next winter, that’s when the problems will start to compound.”

Water districts across the state are encouraging Floridians to use their water wisely. Bill Graf, spokesperson for the SFWMD, says that for now, residents should observe the twice-a-week watering restriction. If people don’t voluntarily use less water, more restrictions could go

into place and officials could impose penalties.

“When it’s raining, there’s less attention paid to it, but with this drought seemingly getting more entrenched, we want to encourage enforcement of those rules,” he says.

The majority of the state’s water comes from the underground Floridan aquifer.

Graf says if the drought continues to intensify, the district can look at users with consumptive water permits and cut the allocation of what they’re receiving. This can include golf courses, agricultural and nursery farms, mining activities and commercial users who pull water from the aquifer or other bodies of water.

While the drought is serious, Graf says, it probably won’t severely affect the aquifer if people conserve water. Currently, the areas of Orange, Osceola, Polk, Seminole and Lake counties pump about 800 million gallons from the aquifer a day, a figure that remained relatively flat for almost two decades as more residents moved to Central Florida. Back in 2014, the Central Florida Water Initiative said Orlando was using as much water as it safely could from the aquifer, but the groundwater withdrawals were reaching the limits of sustainability.

“The Floridan aquifer is sustainable right now to pump about 850 millions of gallons a day, not more,” Graf says. “With any real expansion of water use, we’re going to have to rely on alternative service.”

Residents should also be careful about accidentally starting fires, says Sean Gallagher, manager of the Orlando district for the Florida Forest Service. Don’t throw cigarettes on the ground or dump the contents of your barbecue grill in the backyard.

While that might usually produce no reaction, in this drought, it could start a fire. If you get pulled over or have to change a tire on a grassy roadside, turn off your car – the heat could provoke flames if it comes into contact with dry vegetation, Gallagher says.

Certain areas, like homes surrounded by trees, can be more at risk because it’s harder for firefighters to get through wooded areas when there’s a fire.

“The drought is not going to necessarily cause more fires, but it does make it difficult to control,” Gallagher says. “You still need something or someone to start a fire.

It’s not going to start by itself.”

lorida’s droughts appear to be cyclical, but climate experts and environmental advocates say warming temperatures may exacerbate the consequences.

Droughts are part of the state’s normal climate pattern and have happened every five to six years for decades, says Leonard Berry, a Florida Atlantic University professor who doubles as the director of the Florida Center for Environmental Studies.

But due to climate change, Florida is having more intense rainstorms and longer periods without rain in warmer winters.

Berry says a similar phenomenon is happening to the hurricanes that may come toward Florida. The number of hurricanes is not increasing, but we can expect the few hurricanes that hit the state will be more

intense because of higher water temperatures. Hurricane Matthew smacked into the Caribbean and east coast of the U.S. last year, directly killing 585 people, including some in Florida.

Eric Rollings, chair of the Orange County Soil and Water Conservation District, agrees. In recent months, he’s seen local lake levels drop dramatically. He lived in Orlando during the 1998 fires, and this drought reminds him of when “it seemed like the whole state was going to burn.”

“Hopefully, it’s not to that extent, but the thing is that when we don’t have rainfall, consumptive use permits are draining more out of the aquifer, and you have warmer months, it’s a recipe for brush fires,” he says. “People are going to start using a lot more water, and we have to ask, are we going to see sinkholes after a month or two?”

Climate change may not be responsible for the drought itself, but Rollings says it is responsible for the severity.

“I mean, look at all the different weather patterns,” he says. “These hurricanes coming through are huge. It’s like everything is on steroids.”

Rollings thinks people in Orlando may not know the area is in a severe drought, so he wants to get the word out.

“Don’t wait for an authoritative body to tell you can’t do something to protect your quality of life,” he says. “Every day we need to work together and conserve our water and resources. [We] have 20 million residents and 100 million visitors every year, so we’ve got to protect that – when it’s not there and the rules become more restrictive, you’re going to notice.” mcordeiro@orlandoweekly.com

Earley’s project of guerrilla resistance gently subverts the corporate ooze into our public space, and reminds us of the emotional and political imperatives to resist.

It’s been a little over a week

since Celebration VII ended at the Orange County Convention Center, which is barely been enough time to recover from the biggest Star Wars convention Orlando has ever seen. In over two decades of attending major events at OCCC, including countless Megacons and IAAPAs, I’ve never experienced anything close to the insanity of 2017’s Star Wars Celebration Orlando, which supposedly sold more than 50,000 tickets. Fans from around the world started camping out for coveted panel wristbands a day before the event was scheduled to start, and the queuing throngs were impressively peaceful considering the rampant disorganization demonstrated by convention organizers ReedPOP. After a full day of being misdirected by ill-informed Celebration representatives, I learned that I could get a far better view of the all-important discussion panels by staying home and watching live YouTube streams from my couch. Even so, there was something undeniably inspiring about standing shoulder-to-shoulder with hundreds of fellow Star Wars fanatics as George Lucas, Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford appeared on stage together … even if we were just watching a Jumbotron simulcast hundreds of yards outside the actual hall. Aside from literally bumping into Ian “Emperor Palpatine” McDiarmid as he strolled to an autograph session, my only close encounters with famous characters came courtesy of the cosplaying attendees.

FIRST-CLASS COSPLAY

As usual, the fan-made costumes – ranging from screen-accurate likenesses of Sith and Jedi to a bling-encrusted Crystal Stormtrooper, and clever crossovers like “Garth Vader,” wandering the halls searching for “Obi Wayne Kenobi” – were the highlight of the con. With each successive Celebration I’ve attended, the massive main show floor has become increasingly overrun with slick marketing displays pushing the latest lines of officially licensed Star Wars products, such as Hasbro’s new “Forces of Destiny” female-focused action

In two decades of cons, I’ve never experienced anything close to the insanity of 2017’s Star Wars Celebration Orlando. figures (which are sadly still proportioned more like fashion models than the actual actresses, despite the pro-woman advertising). But it’s the less corporate components – like mom-and-pop vendors trading in vintage lunchboxes and board games from my youth, or a collection of customized cars inspired by characters like BB-8 and Darth Vader – that keep sci-fi fan conventions worth coming to, if only to admire the labors of love that these movies motivate fans to undertake.

JAM-PACKED PANELS

Trying to see any of Star Wars Celebration’s headliner events in person, such as the debut of the new teaser trailer for Episode VIII or Hamill’s touching tribute to Carrie Fisher, was an exercise in frustration if you weren’t willing to wait in line overnight. The one panel I did squeeze into – a Q&A with a laconic Billy Dee Williams – was notable mostly for Warwick Davis’ exuberant emceeing, while others I followed online offered scant solid details about upcoming Star Wars adventures. But there was one Celebration session that actually lived up to expectations, unveiling previously unknown information about the Star Wars attractions currently under construction at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

Celebration’s Disney Parks-produced discussion panel, which featured Imagineering’s Scott Trowbridge alongside Lucasfilm’s Pablo Hidalgo and Doug Chiang, provided our most detailed preview yet of the new lands opening in 2019 at Disneyland and Walt Disney World.

While the name of the location guests will visit is still a secret, it was confirmed that the new area represents a previously unseen planet on the galaxy’s Outer Rim, and is set in the post-Endor era of the Resistance and First Order. As previously rumored, we know that the land’s headliner rides will be a Millennium Falcon simulator, which will give each guest a job in crewing the iconic craft, and an indoor thrill ride through a battle featuring lifesized AT-AT walkers.

NEW DISNEY DETAILS

What was new, and potentially gamechanging, was the suggestion that the entire Star Wars area will be interactive to an unprecedented degree. Details are currently fuzzier than a Wookiee’s chin, but Disney implies that every action guests take will impact their reputation and influence how the aliens and droids autonomously roaming the region react to them.

Bang up the bird during your flight on the Falcon, and characters elsewhere will remember it later. Essentially, the entire Star Wars section of the park will resemble an immersive live action role-playing game where secret missions and Force-fueled stunts fill the streets, instead of being restricted to inside show buildings; watch the alleyways and rooftops for in-your-face fisticuffs between Stormtroopers and the citizens.

How Mickey will manage the sure-tobe-overwhelming demand for such an experience, and what kind of expensive upcharges may be involved, remain the million-dollar questions. Disney has even surveyed guests about a proposed boutique Star Wars hotel where the story will surround you while you sleep; if you have to ask “how much?,” you definitely won’t be able to afford it. However, if the Mouse can make this innovative concept fly (along with others, like their recent patent for laser-deflecting lightsabers), Disney could finally leapfrog Universal’s Wizarding World, making Potter’s magic wands look like outmoded pieces of plastic. skubersky@orlandoweekly.com

“We really think we’ve created a unique place for you to go with your family, or where you can go have a drink with your friends, or have a date night with your loved one, in the way that the local mainstream market in Mexico actually does it,” says Mark Cline, Director of Operations of Mesa21. “It’s not a tourist location—it’s an authentic upscale Mexican place in America.”

No frozen food is allowed in Mesa21 While it’s clear that atmosphere plays a central role in making a restaurant feel authentic, Rios is convinced that the best way to get into his customers’ hearts is by serving delicious Mexican food.

That’s why Mesa21’s new menu is filled with Mexican specialties like chiles rellenos, chicken with mole, tacos barbacoa and Mexican ceviche.

In addition to those classic Mexican dishes, Mesa21 – like most fine dining and casual places in Mexico – also serves American and European classics, albeit with a Mexican twist.

“In Mexico, we have a lot of European and American influences as well, so we’ve decided to serve Caesar salads or great hamburgers, ribs and steaks that are all cooked and seasoned in Mexican spices,” says Sandra Rios.

To ensure that the food remains as delicious and authentic as possible, Tommy Rios has decided to only use top-quality ingredients in his restaurants and flies Mexican chefs to Orlando to train his staff every other month.

In addition to this, he also sends his cooks to train at some of Mexico’s best restaurants owned by the group.

“Our staff has been over there to learn about the dishes, to develop new ones and to get that full one-on-one experience with some of Mexico’s best chefs,” says Sandra Rios, adding that this sort of cross-cultural experience gives her staff a deeper understanding of the concept that the restaurant is trying to achieve.

Growth and expansion Rios “is extremely grateful” for the warm welcome that the restaurant has received from Orlando’s local community, and says that as the restaurant continues to expand it will look to become more involved in the community and local events.

“We’re very happy as a restaurant group to have picked Orlando as the starting point for our project,” says Tommy Rios. “The way that the city has received us, supported us, and welcomed us has been amazing, and we’re hoping to give back to the community more and more as we establish ourselves here.”

At that point, Rios hopes, Mesa21 will be able to continue its expansion throughout the state.

“Our goal is to have five to seven locations around Orlando, and then continue to move up through the Gainesville, Jacksonville, and Tallahassee areas and eventually into Miami,” says Sandra Rios.

enough genuine promise to make me almost feel guilty about looking for the worst in them.

(Almost.) Take this adaptation of Dave Eggers’ 2013 novel, in which a new recruit to a successful tech firm learns that their work emphasizes innovation over certain lesser concepts, like privacy and basic human decency. It’s a concept that’s even timelier now than it was three years ago, so I almost flinch at suggesting that top-billed star Tom Hanks, who plays the founder of the conglomerate in question, might be doing Pulitzer-mandated community service for having helped to further the cause of Dan Brown. (Almost.) Meanwhile, co-star Emma Watson is on top of the world with Beauty and the Beast, supporting actor Patton Oswalt is a national treasure, the beloved Bill Paxton makes his final screen appearance ever, and oh shit this job just got way harder than I signed up for. Ordinarily, I’d assume that a Hollywood adaptation of a work so relentlessly dystopic was going to screw the pooch with incongruous third-act redemption – Minority Report, anyone? – but Eggers himself co-wrote the script with director James Ponsoldt, so maybe they’ll prove to have stuck to their nihilistic guns. Hope so, because I love an unhappy ending. (PG-13)

How to Be a Latin Lover Mexican film and TV

legend Eugenio Derbez portrays an outof-practice lothario who has to rehone his skills of seduction after his sugar momma of 25 years abruptly kicks him to the curb.

Derbez’ Instructions Not Included was the most successful Spanish-language film ever, making more than $100 million on a mere $5 million budget, and it’s always nice to see a major release headlined by a performer over the age of 50. So hopefully Lover will prove that he deserves to end up as more than the answer to the question “Who was the Latino Yahoo Serious of the teens?” (PG-13) Sleight This year’s Sundance Film Festival

was the launching pad for filmmaker JD Dillard’s unconventional mixture of neighborhood drama and superheroics, all located in the person of a street magician who has to rely on his special talents of electromagnetic levitation to rescue his sister from a Los Angeles drug lord. The Hollywood Reporter said the film is “loaded with talent on both sides of the camera,” but Collider labeled it “silly” for trying to weld social commentary to the powers of Magneto. Hey, you know who else the critics once said that about?

What flabbergasts me is that the original title didn’t even make it to marquees in the U.K., where the general populace is supposed to be much more clever and culturally literate.

TIME TO LET GO Gainesville’s Time headline the Femme Hop showcase of new faces, sounds and perspectives in dance and hip-hop music

orth Florida’s Time, the duo of creative and life partners Michael and Madhava Collins, are giving devotional music a very radical overhaul. The fervent disciples of Krishna consciousness are taking the frothy, bubbly and extremely, shall we say, secular sonic framework of synth pop and marrying it to ancient prayers and self-penned exhortations to cast away material attachments. A spiritual message with a (ear) candy-coated shell, if you will.

Time started several years back, when Michael Collins, a veteran of psych-weirdos Prince Rama, heard a piece that his wife Madhava had worked out on Ableton and was floored: “I was like, ‘Oh my god, this is amazing.’ … And I knew if we teamed up we could make something really amazing.” At that moment, Michael Collins abandoned his solo project and the couple’s personal and creative lives became inextricably linked. Madhava explained, “You can’t separate Time into Michael or Madhava. It has to be both of us together. We write our

songs collectively and we each bring something that the other doesn’t have.”

Another inseparable element from Time’s music is the deeply personal spiritual aspect of their music. Every verse, every chorus becomes bigger than life, arena-level big, rave-level big. It’s no accident to either Collins, both keen observers of popular music spectacle and its hypnotic effects.

“We want our visuals to be over the top – to contrast the sacred with the profane – to give people something to be hypnotized by and also to accentuate the otherworldliness of the music that we’re performing,” explains Michael Collins. “It’s like in rave culture, you see people trying to escape their temporary banal existence in this world by hitting the dance floor and being enveloped in psychedelic lights. … [We’re] just trying to immerse people, take them out of the everyday and place them in this temporary suspension of disbelief – where time almost seems to not exist. That’s what we’re seeking to emulate and create.”

Time’s music, asserts Madhava Collins, is “a document of [their] spiritual journey.”

We’d suggest you join them; a suite of ultracatchy electro-dance music sure beats a dour pamphlet or sermon any day.

Time returns to Orlando this Friday to play the second Always Nothingcurated Femme Hop event at the Henao Contemporary Center alongside ethereal R&B mind-melter Dvwez and loop-chanteuse Tiger Fawn, with DJ sets from Cabyus, Deviant Art Heaux and Fiona. “It’s great to see this concept of Femme Hop transform from an idea on the internet to a platform where talented women under the radar receive the recognition they deserve,” event co-organizer Cabias Thomas enthuses. Billed as a “tribute to the extremely talented yet often overlooked women in hip-hop fuckin’ the game up,” this night is a chance to catch some new voices in Florida hip-hop and electro. The 17th annual Florida Music

Festival is now in the books. For my part, maximum credit goes to all the acts that played the TLU showcase – Saskatchewan, the Welzeins, Zoya Zafar and PolyKarp – and the fest organizers, who went all out to let me have Sales headline.

Revelations from my showcase include the usually solo acts of Zoya Zafar and PolyKarp coming big for the occasion with additional accompaniment. Zafar, in particular, showed a tantalizing glimpse of what her gorgeous music could be with a band. And Saskatchewan, who delivered the night’s best performance, are showing some new looks with pivots toward a stately jangle-pop direction. As this performance affirmed, it’s a beautiful and perfect new way to angle their perpetual dream.

On the macro, adding WPRK to the list of stage curators was smart. Having scenemover Swamburger curate a stage again this year was a good idea. But him expanding it even further beyond his native hip-hop to include bands like Pathos, Pathos and Room Full of Strangers was genius.

DIET CIG WITH DADDY ISSUES, WILL’S PUB, APRIL 18

Diet Cig are an emerging New York band that first launched on respectable boutique label Father/Daughter Records (who also released the last album by Orlando’s own Saskatchewan) and just now stepped out with their first full-length (Swear I’m Good at This) on esteemed indie powerhouse Frenchkiss Records. The duo’s music is the sound of youthful earnestness delivered with directness and abandon. Even if you think you can feel it in their music, you

That may all sound a little like death by giddiness, but it’s hard to argue with something so pure, especially when it’s delivered with this much verve and scrap.

Frontwoman Alex Luciano is just an unstoppable supernova of world-changing will who turns sweetness into empowerment. Leveraging vulnerability into power by pouring their hearts out alongside earto-ear smiles and high kicks (!), Diet Cig beam the kind of fresh-faced, wide-eyed optimism that’s immaculate proof that we’re not all totally fucked. Who couldn’t use a big ol’ shot of that right now?

Opening were tourmates Daddy Issues, a Nashville band on Infinity Cat Recordings, the label run by JEFF the Brotherhood. The trio kick out grunge-pop that drives good, expressive melodies with a lot of horses under the hood. The eraspecific influences are many – the grunge textures, the ’90s indie-rock melodics – but Daddy Issues’ rendition and blend are less overtly slavish and more reinterpreted anew than their many contemporaries.

And that makes these ladies a very promising act. Though not quite as finished as their headlining billmates, Daddy Issues’ music could’ve stolen the night were it not for Diet Cig’s practically peerless incandescence.

El Diáspora is a new Orlando promoter doing something interesting and probably necessary: showcasing Latin punk. When you consider the sizable populations in both the punk and Latin communities of our area, the intersection is natural and has potential for prime synergy.

The latest event was headlined by Brazilian band End of Pipe. Though they’re from a hemisphere away, their soulfully rugged music, all anthem and catharsis, is actually more evocative of a sound rooted only an hour and a half north of here in Gainesville – specifically, Hot Water Music. It’s as solid a foundation to start from as they come, and End of Pipe’s take on the style is sturdy and reliably hits its marks.

Opening was Orlando band Boylectric, who deal in a slightly amorphous postpunk sound that’s hard-driving and diverse with some good influences, but could use some sharpening and experience.

More than any of the individual bands, though, El Diáspora itself is the bigger story. If it can get a foothold in the scene, it could be a welcome cultural force as a punk-rock ambassador program, a thing that probably only Punching Babies’ annual Foreign Dissent showcase was doing here consistently until now. With their discernibly amped-up funk and intrusively percussive bass play, the California-bred Rock & Roll Hall of Famers Red Hot Chili Peppers set course for the Amway this week and are strapped with a game plan that, if patterns hold, is sure to involve some deliciously inappropriate innuendos. Four years into their third decade of existence, the Red Hot Chili Peppers have decided to follow their 2016 summer album, The Getaway, with a worldwide tour that features special guests Baby Metal and Jack Irons. For their 11th record release, the six-time Grammy recipients worked with producer and methodical beat-birther Brian Joseph Burton, better known as Danger Mouse. His addition undeniably altered the backdrop of the RHCP sound, but left intact what drew their large and always growing following in the first place. Preserving History in the Aftermath of Pulse LEARNING

It’s National Poetry Month, and what’s more poetic than using your federally appointed numerical designation to honor your neighborhood?

WMFE invites Central Floridians to get creative and write odes to everyone’s favorite five numbers: their ZIP codes. These ZipOdes must each be five lines – the number of words in each line is determined by the number in your particular ZIP. Then, come out and represent your ’hood at the ZipOde Throwdown, where you can show off your poetic prowess, listen to live music from local band Beemo and munch on lobster rolls from the Monsta Lobsta food truck. Every day, dozens of people visit the gay nightclub Pulse to leave flowers, teddy bears, rainbow flags and candles. If you think about it, that’s hundreds of tributes in the 10 months that have passed since the mass shooting at Pulse that killed 49 people. Not to mention the white crosses, banners, angel statues, art pieces and pinwheels that were brought to Orlando during the vigils after June 12. In the haze of those weeks as a community coped, some people would have let the items rot in the sun.

But not the Orange County Regional History Center. Workers collected, preserved, catalogued and stored thousands of mementos left at vigils and tribute sites in the aftermath of Pulse for the One Orlando Collection Initiative. The things people left serve as a reminder that victims and survivors of Pulse were loved, and in the decades to come, will remind the world how Orlando responded on its most tragic day. Learn about the heroic efforts of the History Center staff from chief curator Pamela Schwartz and collections manager Whitney Broadaway at this afternoon presentation. – Monivette Cordeiro

If Judge (April 30, right) could be seen as the avenging ghosts of hardcore past, a convincing case can be made that Barcelona’s Ultra are the ghosts of hardcore yet to come.

The youthful Spanish contingent combines members of Absurdo and Anarquia Vertical into a combustible whole, merging elements of Euro and U.S. hardcore into a new form of world-spanning violence. Ultra’s recent 7-inch release on the untouchable La Vida Es Un Mus label out of the U.K. is almost foaming at the mouth in terms of fury and velocity: seven berserker songs bursting forth from a 45-rpm single – just like how Agnostic Front and Negative Approach used to do it. Flammable materials; handle with care. One of only two Florida shows for Ultra, with support from South Floridian Latinx firebrands Ladrón. – Matthew Moyer

After the 2016 presidential election, Dahlia Lithwick (senior editor at Slate, contributing editor at Newsweek, and a specialist on U.S. courts and the law) wrote: “It is shattering to contemplate starting again to relitigate fights over our bodies, access to contraception, equal pay, respect in the workplace, the right to love and marry the partner of our choosing, and the right to be unafraid of sexual violence and casual threats. We have a long climb ahead.” Today, as always, Planned Parenthood is one of the primary warriors fighting for those rights, and they’ve thrown themselves wholeheartedly into battle. But they need the support of others who want to defend reproductive freedom in order to keep fighting. This fundraiser gala, featuring special guests Lithwick and Sonya Renee Taylor, poet and founder of The Body Is Not An Apology, is one way to contribute. MUSIC

Straightedge hardcore has never lent itself to halfmeasures or ironic stances, and New Yorkers Judge were about as hardline as you could get in the late ’80s. Formed by Mike Judge and Porcell after leaving Youth of Today in 1987, Judge was a far heavier, blunter and more confrontational proposition. Arguably, Judge was the most for-real and in-your-face about the straight-edge lifestyle of any of their peers. Despite the fuck-you antagonism dripping from every word out of vocalist Mike Judge’s mouth, the band’s music was an almost unfairly catchy blend of hardcore’s velocity and the added girth of metallic undercurrents, and they were loved and lionized for this by their devoted fans. In an interview years later, Judge recalled how he received a phone call from a fan about a Klan rally in his town and asking if Judge would come beat them all up! The band splintered and moved on to other things in 1991, burnt out by the constant fights and violence at their shows (their final show was in Tampa), but reunited in 2013 against all odds to play some triumphant comeback shows. And word is that they still deliver the brawny goods. The band has continued doing sporadic shows since then and this Orlando show is part of a brief, three-city Florida swing to settle unfinished business. An unlikely reunion if there ever was one; don't miss out on the chance to hear “New York Crew” live. The Delusionaires MUSIC

The Delusionaires haven’t been a regular thing this decade since life geographically scattered its members. But in the early 2000s, this wild instrumental band was responsible for much of the sleaze and color oozing from Orlando’s underbelly. Musically, they’re as loose as the women they covet, smearing a grease slick of garage, hard rhythm & blues, and rock & roll with pure vice. And live, they’re all sweat and monkey business. It’s a trip of carnal nostalgia straight out of a Tarantino movie. Fortunately, their local ties are deep, and every few years or so they all find themselves back on the same old stomping grounds. Luckily for us, that means getting the gang together again for a one-off show, this time with support by Atlanta garage-rock traditionalists Bad Spell and St. Augustine beach band Kenny and the Jets. I’m a 31-year-old gay man. I’ve been with my fiancé for three years, and we are getting married in the fall. I’ve got a question about initiating sex in my sleep – I read somewhere that “sexsomnia” is the “medical” term, but maybe the internet invented that? According to my fiancé, I have initiated or performed some kind of sex act in the middle of the night and then gone right back to sleep. The next day, I don’t remember anything. This freaks me out for a couple of reasons: My body doing things without my mind being in control is concerning enough, but it feels kinda rapey, since I doubt I’m capable of hearing “no” in this state. My fiancé doesn’t feel that way; he finds it sexy. The other thing – and maybe I shouldn’t have read so much Freud and Jung in college – is that I’m worried my body is acting out desires that my conscious mind doesn’t want to acknowledge. According to my fiancé, the last time I did stuff in my sleep, I rimmed him and told him how much I wanted to fuck him. Rimming isn’t a typical part of our sex life (although I’d like it to be), and my fiancé has never bottomed for anyone (I’ve topped guys in prior relationships, but in our relationship I’ve only bottomed).

“Sexsomnia may be expressed as loud, obscene vocalizations from sleep (that are typically uncharacteristic of the individual while awake), prolonged or violent masturbation, inappropriate touch upon the genitals, buttocks and breast of a bed partner, and initiation of sexual intercourse,” Bornemann says. “The vast majority of sleep disorders are not reflective of a significant underlying psychiatric condition.”

So your unconscious, late-night gropings/ initiatings/rimmings don’t mean you secretly desire to be an ass-eating top. And there’s no need to drag poor Sigmund or Carl into this, SHEETS, since you’re not doing anything in your sleep that you don’t desire to do wide awake. You wanna rim your fiancé, you’ve topped other guys and would probably like to top this one too – so neither of the examples you cite qualify as desires your

“conscious mind doesn’t want to acknowledge.” (Unless you wrote to me in your sleep.) Like all sleep disorders, sexsomnia is just something that happens to a very small number of people, SHEETS, there’s no need to endow it with deeper meaning. Take it away, Dr. Bornemann …

“The brain is made of approximately 100 billion neurons, or electrical connections that allow effective communication between brain subunits. As with all electrical systems, errors in transmission may occur – these are called ‘switching errors.’ In sleep, switching errors may activate previously quiescent areas of the brain while other areas remain off-line. In sleep-related behaviors, it is thought that deep-seated subunits near the sleep-wake generating center become triggered, which activate primal automatic behaviors. Simply stated, electrical switching errors in sleep may unleash the animal that actually lies within us all – sometimes to an extent that may have unintended criminal or forensics implications.”

In most cases, sexsomniacs will hump a pillow or jerk themselves off. Birbiglia wasn’t initiating sex in his sleep – he was jumping out of windows. A danger to himself and others, he sought treatment and is no longer jumping out of windows in his sleep. You’re not a danger to yourself or others currently, SHEETS, but if you got a new partner or your current partner’s feelings about surprise, middle-of-the-night rimjobs were to change, you could be a danger. So you should chat with a doctor now about drugs and/or other interventions.

“My catch-all advice is to read this book called The Promise of Sleep by Dr. William C. Dement,” said Birbiglia in an e-mail after I shared your letter with him. “He’s sort of the father of sleep medicine.
