John Morgan boasted his work-from-home surveillance policy pushed 23 employees to quit

Orlando attorney John Morgan has spent years branding himself as “for the people,” but apparently the people working from home should expect to be surveilled. On the “Iced Coffee Hour” podcast, the billionaire founder of the Morgan & Morgan law firm said his company’s remote-work policy came with cameras used to monitor employees and “measure keystrokes.” Morgan said, “You can work from home, but guess what? We’re going to put a camera on your computer. We’re going to put a camera up your ass.” He said 23 workers quit in the first week that the new policy was instituted rather than accept the setup, claiming those employees didn’t really want to work. In a separate podcast appearance in July, however, Morgan said 13 employees had quit. Morgan’s firm employs roughly 5,000 people nationwide, including about 1,200 attorneys. The Orlando lawyer has backed successful efforts to raise Florida’s minimum wage and legalize medical marijuana, but he’s also spoken openly about using cheaper foreign labor for some call-center work. The camera rant went viral last week, with Morgan doubling down on the idea that remote workers who reject surveillance simply don’t want to be held accountable.

Kissimmee kept hiring freeze in place amid fears of Amendment 3 impacts on the city’s budget

Kissimmee plans to keep a hiring freeze in place as city leaders prepare for a potential hit to property-tax revenue and a generally ugly economic forecast. The freeze began last October and will continue into the coming fiscal year. City Manager Mike Steigerwald said the move is meant to avoid eliminating existing jobs while the city monitors rising costs, tariffs and the possible effects of Amendment 3, a proposed state constitutional amendment on the November ballot that would expand Florida’s homestead property-tax exemption. State economists estimate the measure could cost local governments about $5 billion in its first year and $12 billion in recurring revenue after that. Property taxes make up about 30 percent of Kissimmee’s general fund, meaning cuts could drastically impact public safety, parks, libraries, infrastructure and other services. The city’s proposed 2026-27 budget sits around $322 million, slightly above last year’s $310 million. Steigerwald joked the budget theme this year was nearly “Survival” before staffers landed on the more sunny “Propel Kissimmee.”

Study claimed travel scams are taking Florida for about $20 million a year

airline miles. The problem is also getting worse nationwide. According to the study, U.S. travel-fraud losses have nearly tripled since 2021, climbing from $99 million to $297 million. One in three Americans surveyed said scams have made them more hesitant to book vacations this year, while 22 percent admitted clicking a travel ad or search result that turned out to be fake. And 60 percent of respondents claimed artificial intelligence has made travel scams more convincing.

DeSantis administration ordered Flock cameras off state roads

Florida’s rapidly multiplying license-plate readers are getting an eviction notice from state roads. The DeSantis administration moved to withdraw permission for Flock cameras and other licenseplate reader systems on roads controlled by the Florida Department of Transportation, citing privacy concerns, reports of misuse and the broader possibility of turning everyday driving habits into grist for a surveillance database. The AI-powered cameras can flag vehicles, track suspects and assist law enforcement, but their exponential spread has drawn criticism from both sides of the political aisle as reports of abuse and misidentification surface in Florida and elsewhere. FDOT has told local law-enforcement agencies with existing permits to remove the cameras within 30 days and says it will stop issuing new permits for the systems. Gov. Ron DeSantis, who has generally pushed to give police more tools, said the technology should remain focused on criminals rather than being used to create dossiers of ordinary people’s movements. He also raised the specter of pandemic-era lockdown enforcement while warning about a potential “surveillance state.” For now at least, one of Florida’s fastest-growing surveillance tools has hit a roadblock.

Florida House Democrats want Attorney General James Uthmeier impeached over the mishandling of $10 million from a Medicaid settlement that ultimately landed in political committees he controlled. The money originated from a $67 million settlement between Florida and Medicaid vendor Centene. Of that, $10 million went to the Hope Florida Foundation, the charity arm of an initiative started by First Lady Casey DeSantis to help connect those in need to nonprofits. The foundation funneled the money to two nonprofits which in turn gave the money to political committees led by Uthmeier, who was then serving as Gov. Ron DeSantis’ chief of staff. The committees used the money to oppose 2024 ballot amendments that would have protected abortion rights and legalized recreational marijuana. A leaked grand jury report said the money was “misappropriated” but found insufficient evidence to bring criminal charges. House Democratic Leader Fentrice Driskell is now calling for a special legislative session to consider Uthmeier’s impeachment, along with a House investigation into others named in the report. DeSantis and Uthmeier have defended the arrangement, pointing to the lack of charges and maintaining the settlement was legal. Rep. Yvonne Hinson, D-Gainesville, was more blunt in her assessment: “Someone should go to jail for this.” Florida travelers already have to dodge surprise fees, questionable vacation deals and whatever is happening with airline baggage prices. Now add increasingly convincing scams to the itinerary. A new study from travel and lifestyle guide LocalsInsider ranks Florida as the seventh-worst state in the country for travel-scam losses, with an estimated $20.4 million lost annually, which comes to about $90,351 for every 100,000 Floridians. The analysis used Federal Trade Commission data and includes familiar traps like fake booking sites, phishing texts, fraudulent vacation rentals and stolen orlandoweekly.com ● SEPT. 9-15, 2026 ● ORLANDO WEEKLY

[ news + views ] It concluded that Uthmeier, who was Gov. Ron DeSantis’ chief of staff at the time, “was in a position of authority over those involved” in allegedly diverting $10 million from a Medicaid settlement intended to help poor children get health insurance, and that his Keep Florida Clean PAC was the prime recipient of those funds. Uthmeier has called the investigation a “politically motivated witch hunt driven by Democrats and a far-left Democrat state attorney in Tallahassee.” However, Florida U.S. Republican Sen. Rick Scott told the Tampa Bay Times in a written statement that the report was “deeply concerning,” adding that “Florida families deserve accountability, not more finger-pointing in Tallahassee.” DeSantis suspended Worrell and removed her from office on Aug. 9, 2023, for “neglecting her duty to faithfully prosecute crime in her jurisdiction,” and replaced her with former Orange County Circuit Judge Andrew Bain. She legally challenged the decision, which the Florida Supreme Court upheld in June 2024. She ran again for the seat that fall and defeated Bain by 14 percentage points.

Politically motivated decisions

‘WE ARE DOING OUR JOB, SIR’

State Attorney Monique Worrell responds to rumors she’s about to be suspended again BY MITCH PERRY, F LO RIDA P H O EN IX

M

onique Worrell, the twice-elected state attorney for Florida’s 9th Judicial Circuit in Central Florida, responded forcefully Tuesday to what she described as a credible rumor she is again about to be suspended by Gov. Ron DeSantis. “Last night I received a phone call from someone telling me that my removal was imminent and that I was going to be replaced with an assistant statewide officer who used to work in this office,” Worrell said during a press conference in Orlando. The Phoenix reached out to the governor’s office, but did not receive a response.

He knows nothing about it

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier — who has been critical of Worrell’s work — was asked about the rumored suspension earlier in Kissimmee and said he knew nothing about it.

“I just want people to do their job,” he said. “I want people to put bad guys away. When somebody kills another person, or tries to kill another person, I don’t want them to get a slap on the wrist. I want them to go away forever. I want to make sure that they don’t hurt another individual, and any state attorney who disagrees with me on that, in my opinion, is not doing his or her job effectively. That is negligence. That is gross incompetence. That is wrong.” “We are doing our job, sir. And we’re doing our job very well,” Worrell fired back. She went on to cite crime statistics that she said made her point, saying shootings in Orlando were down 33% and overall violent crime, burglaries, and car thefts were down, as well. In Orange County, she said, crime has dropped by 28%. “These are not my statistics. Check with law enforcement,” she added.

She went on offense against Uthmeier, referring to the leaked grand jury report concerning the Hope Florida Foundation scandal that surfaced last week. “It was last week that I said to my staff, I have received information that some of the funds misappropriated were spent in the media market here in Central Florida, and said that we should look into it,” Worrell said. “Let me be very clear: In the event that I was removed, it won’t be because we aren’t doing our job, it will be because of concerns about what doing our job could look like for the people on the other end of that report.”

An ugly leak

That grand jury report — obtained by CBS Miami and posted on its website Wednesday — did not result in any criminal charges but included multiple mentions of Uthmeier.

Uthmeier has sniped at her performance in office since she was re-elected. Last fall he accused her of refusing to prosecute pedophiles. He later threatened her with removal because of a disagreement about whether to charge a woman who shot and killed a man who attacked her in her car during a road rage incident, writing, “Your actions likely constitute a breach of your ethical obligations. And they may also constitute misfeasance, malfeasance, neglect of duty, and incompetence.” Worrell later dropped the murder charge. She said Tuesday that her 2023 removal wasn’t because she wasn’t doing her job “but because of politically motivated decisions that were not based in fact. “And I will not allow politics to work to distract me from the responsibility that the voters have entrusted me with,” she said. “My focus is not on political attacks, my focus is on victims, on public safety, on accountability, and on justice. And until the people in the 9th Judicial Circuit tell me otherwise, I will continue to do the job they elected me to do. That’s where my attention belongs, not on politics, but on the work.” Since being appointed attorney general by DeSantis early last year, Uthmeier has threatened to remove multiple locally elected officials for their stances on working with the federal government on immigration enforcement, but has not actually done so. SAVE THE CHEERLEADER Rep. Darren Soto was one of eight House Democrats to denounce socialism and support Trump’s SAVE Act BY MCKENNA S CH UEL ER

K

issimmee Congressman Darren Soto joined just seven other Democrats in the U.S. House last Tuesday to vote in favor of a resolution denouncing socialism and the Democratic Socialists of America, and voicing support for President Donald Trump’s controversial voter identification bill, which Soto previously voted against. The resolution, H.Res. 1490, condemns and denounces socialism “in all its forms” and argues socialism is “incompatible with American values and the United States Constitution.” It also urges Congress to pass a voter-identification bill backed by President Trump — the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE America) Act — that critics claim is an attempt to “rig” the midterm elections and would create unnecessary obstacles to voting. The resolution nonetheless passed last week in a 220 to 192 vote, with all Republican U.S. House members voting in favor of it, along with eight Democrats: Reps. Soto (Florida), Jared Golden (Maine), Vicente Gonzalez Jr. (Texas), Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (Washington state), Kathy Castor (Florida), Henry Cuellar (Texas),

Don Davis (North Carolina) and Gabe Vasquez (New Mexico). Two additional Democrats — neither from Florida — voted “present.” Most Democrats reportedly opposed it because of its controversial SAVE America Act language. “House Resolution 1490 explicitly calls for enactment of the so-called SAVE America Act, which is the top legislative priority of far-right extremists. Accordingly, I will vote No on the latest MAGA effort to rig the midterm elections,” said House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries (a self-described capitalist) in a statement on the day of the vote. Soto’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment on his vote. A centrist Democrat representing parts of south Orlando and Osceola County in District 9, Soto previously voted against the SAVE Act last year. The legislation, championed by the Trump administration as a way to combat election “fraud,” would require proof of U.S. citizenship — either a U.S. passport, or a certified birth certificate and government-issued photo ID — when registering to vote. It would also require

COURTESY PHOTO

voters to present a state-issued photo ID in order to cast a ballot. It’s already illegal for noncitizens to vote in state or federal elections, but federal law does not currently require mandatory proof of citizenship in order to register to vote. The National Urban League calls the SAVE America Act a “throwback to Jim Crow voter suppression.”

Under pressure

Soto, notably, is facing a steeper challenge to maintain his seat in Congress this fall, however, after redistricting pushed by Gov. Ron DeSantis earlier this year changed the boundaries of Soto’s district to make it more favorable to Republicans. “It’s tough, but winnable,” Soto told Central Florida Public Media in May. He was first elected to the U.S. House in 2016. Soto will be facing off this November against Republican Dan Green, a U.S. Navy veteran endorsed by Trump. The only other Democrat from Florida to join Soto in voting in favor of H.Res. 1490 Tuesday was another vulnerable Democrat, Kathy Castor, a longtime Congresswoman from Tampa who similarly saw her district skewed into one more Republicanleaning by redistricting. “Back home in Florida right now, folks are very concerned with the rise of socialism,”Castor told D.C. news website The Hill after the vote last week. Castor, who also voted against the SAVE Act last April, described the SAVE Act provision in H.Res. 1490 to The Hill as “a joke.” “And thankfully, that’s not going anywhere,” she added. The socialist boogeyman — levied once again

by the Florida GOP this year — is no newcomer to Florida politics. Regardless of where a Democrat running for office actually falls on the political spectrum, the GOP has historically shown no shyness about declaring Democrats “socialist,” even if they’ve personally denounced socialist ideology or lean more toward the center or a moderate platform. The resolution comes, however, at a time where more political candidates across the country who are members of DSA or who otherwise self-describe as democratic socialists are gaining traction at the polls — including in Florida. U.S. Senate candidate Angie Nixon, a progressive Democrat from Jacksonville, shocked political pundits with her upset victory in the August Democratic primary election over the more moderate candidate, Alex Vindman. Nixon, like other DSA candidates, is running on a platform that includes support for free universal healthcare through Medicare for All, universal childcare, a higher federal minimum wage, ending unconditional U.S. aid to Israel and abolishing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Nixon, however, only recently joined DSA over the summer and has distanced herself from other positions on DSA’s political platform, such as defunding the police and abolishing prisons. “What I have called for is a people’s budget and a people’s agenda, which is what I will continue to call for, because I believe that hard-working everyday people should get to shape what our communities look like and what our economies look like,” Nixon told hosts of the Tampa radio program “The Skinny” on WMNF 88.5-FM last month. DSA-backed candidates so far this year have clinched victories in local, state and Congressional elections in New York, Colorado, Michigan and even Florida with the re-election of St. Petersburg City Council member Richie Floyd, who was the first open socialist elected in Florida in more than a century when he won in 2021. The organization, boasting more than 120,000 dues-paying members nationwide, gained greater momentum through the presidential campaigns of Vermont U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders — a self-described democratic socialist — in 2016 and 2020, and more recently through the upset victory of New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani against establishment Democrat Andrew Cuomo. Florida, a once-purple state that has trended redder since the COVID-19 pandemic, isn’t New York. But it also isn’t the predictable ruby-red state it might be characterized as by national political pundits who forget that Florida voters approved a $15 minimum wage in 2020 and legalized medical marijuana in 2016. More recently in 2024, more than 50 percent of Florida voters voted in favor of ballot measures to legalize recreational marijuana and restore abortion rights in Florida by placing such rights into the state Constitution. Both ballot measures, however, fell just shy of the 60 percent threshold needed for them to pass. mschueler@orlandoweekly.com

OUT LOUD

ERIKA MACDONALD BRINGS TEA TIME TO OUT FEST (COURTESY PHOTO)

They’re here, they’re queer, get used to it: Orlando Out Fest takes over select local stages this week BY AZLYN CATO

I

n the heavy weeks following the Pulse nightclub tragedy in 2016, George Wallace, executive director of the LGBTQ+ support resource The Center, didn’t attend any of the memorials or vigils. Instead, he says the first time he felt any sense of healing was at an art center for a benefit show, watching Broadway artists perform in honor of the 49 victims of the shooting. Ten years later, the arts continue to have a profound impact on Wallace’s life. Most recently, he’s been working to stage this year’s Orlando Out Fest, a curated weekend festival produced by Orlando Fringe to celebrate queer stories, artists and history. “The governor and the current politicians are trying to erase us, whether it be a sidewalk or a

mural or a light or whatever it may be, a bridge,” Wallace tells Orlando Weekly. “They’re just trying to make us kind of go away, and we’re not going anywhere. So now is really a crucial time to be able to platform and elevate voices in the queer community because we’re not going anywhere.” As the former executive director of Orlando Fringe, he was also tasked with selecting the acts for Orlando Out Fest, returning for a second time after a hiatus in 2025. “I wanted to make sure that there was a really great cross-representation between people who have been part of Fringe for years and years and years, and new emerging artists, and then also make sure that there was burlesque and comedy and storytelling and solo shows and just a really good mix of the art scene here in Central Florida. Because we

have such a robust, great art scene to make sure that there was representation,” Wallace explains. With an overarching goal of highlighting and supporting queer artists, Out Fest represents the full spectrum of the LGBTQIA community. Each production in the 16-show lineup connects to the community, from campy comedy shows and drag queen stand-ups to intimate, heartfelt pieces about queer experience. A majority of ticket sales will also be donated to various nonprofits and scholarship funds and go back to the artists themselves. For Tempestt Halstead, artist director and festival producer for Orlando Fringe, the main mission of Out Fest is to provide equitable spaces for queer artists to make money and to give back to a community in need of visibility. “This is a way for those individuals to have a voice when they don’t have a voice, or a platform to be able to perform it,” says Halstead. “This is their free speech, this is their truths, this is their lived experiences. Art does so much for so many people, and it is really a bridge to connect all of humanity. So it’s not just about one particular story. It’s about saying, ‘Hey, these folks need more support and more visibility right now, and we’re going to give it to them.’” As the LGBTQ+ community has been at the forefront of targeted political attacks and stamped with harmful stereotypes and misconceptions over the last few years, Halstead says that it’s vitally

important for the arts community to fight back in the opposite direction. “There is always a priority to give platforms and highlight marginalized communities, and so of course there needs to be visibility, and there needs to be opportunities,” Halstead says. “The work is not done; it’s never going to be done. I think these last couple of years have really shown us how many steps we can take backwards, and we need to be progressing forward. We need to say we’re here. We’re not afraid to platform these artists.” Halstead began her arts career in college, after majoring in theater stage management and production, where she “instantly fell in love with it.” “The first time I was on stage was at Fringe, and I totally didn’t understand that this was such a unique way to produce as a solo producer and artist,” Halstead says. “Fringe is very unique, and it’s extremely affordable. It’s extremely accessible. Fringe subsidized so much of the cost to be able to produce and let the artist be the artist and take 100% of the ticket sales, and that’s like the main Fringe.” The same will remain true for Out Fest, where ticket prices range from $5 to $18. Unlike the other fests produced by Orlando Fringe, like their International Fringe Theatre Festival or Winter Mini Fest, audiences do not need to purchase an entry button in addition to tickets. “Just buy a ticket and come,” Wallace says. “We say show up on time. We want to make sure that the artists and the integrity of the arts is at its best, so we don’t really allow late seating. Definitely show up on time, and then just hang out and talk to people. Our audiences love to talk about what they’ve just seen, or if there’s a buzz going on.” Wallace says another great aspect of Out Fest is the ability to support businesses that are supporting Fringe and The Center. In partnership with local LGBTQ+ nonprofits and community partners, the shows for Out Fest will be held at Savoy Orlando, the Renaissance Theater Co. and (of course) The Center Orlando. “There is going to be a sellout, so definitely get your tickets early,” Wallace warns. Halstead’s final piece of advice for new audiences that may be skeptical is to simply take a chance on unknown art, artist or genre. “You’re going to walk away from that experience with something,” Halstead says.“It might be a good something. It might be a bad something. It might be a retrospective something. It might be a heartfelt something. But you’re going to walk away with something. So I say just take a chance. It’s extremely cheap. It’s extremely affordable. Even if you just go on the website and just pick randomly, all of this benefits such good causes and benefits artists.” arts@orlandoweekly.com

A top-to-bottom ranking of all 10 Halloween Horror Nights haunted houses based on artistry, atmosphere and effects

• Original crafts: ipas to sours to classics

Universal Orlando’s Halloween

Horror Nights has returned for its 35th annual installment, and creative director Michael Aiello’s team pulled out all the fearful fan-service stops to make this year the best anniversary edition in a decade (unless you’re severely coulrophobic). Thanks to an opening night “RIP” media tour, I was able to experience all 10 haunted houses in one evening — something that should be easier without Express passes, now that “scream early” access starts at 2 p.m. — and even my least favorites feature some fantastic frights. Scares are always subjective, so here’s my personal top-to-bottom ranking based on artistry, atmosphere and effects:

Hellraiser: I’ve been begging for a maze

based on Clive Barker’s seminal films, and this maze exceeded my sky-high expectations with their best intellectual property house since the first American Werewolf in London. The long, disorientingly labyrinthine layout — which is stocked with skin-flaying Cenobites and suffused with the sound of Doug Bradley’s inimitable voice as Pinhead — lets you experience several of the best moments from multiple angles. Massive set-pieces, kinky costumes and iconic makeup designs are seemingly ripped straight from the silver screen; watch for the eye-bending forced-perspective vista of Leviathan, or the animatronic Frank’s wiggling tongue.

Jack & Oddfellow: Chaos & Control:

Whether you’ve been dying for decades to see Jack the Clown’s origin story play out in person or are mostly ignorant of HHN’s original icon and his antagonist, theirs is the must-do marquee maze among this year’s original concepts.

Where other mazes are dark and murky, this is a carnival of sickeningly vibrant colors, featuring some of the most creative video-based effects ever employed at the event, including a trippy vortex tunnel that nearly took me off my feet.

Ozzy Osbourne: Prince of Darkness:

This house is a terrifying yet surprisingly touching tribute that the Madman himself would surely have been proud of. The sheer variety and scale of the scenes should impress even those who weren’t fans of his solo albums. Highlights include going off the rails on the Crazy Train, a bat that bites the head off a human (IYKYK) and a heart-stopping high-fall finale — don’t forget to look up!

after his first HHN appearance, Larry Kurtzberg’s long-awaited return to WKNB occasions the funniest and most fan-serving haunted house in years, filled with tightly paced mini-scenes reviving cult characters like the Pumpkin Lord and houses from the past such as Skoolhouse. Warning for the scent-sensitive: This house assaults you with the foul odor of PSL. Sinners: Period sets and costumes admirably capture the atmosphere of the award-winning film, and there’s no shortage of vampiric jumpscares within the walls of Club Juke. But this maze muffs the movie’s central “piercing the veil” scene, reducing a transcendent mass of revelers to a single scareactor miming guitar. MADLANDS: Caged Cannibals: The Warriors meets We Bought a Zoo in this creative twist on the familiar post-apocalyptic cannibals concept. There’s lots of guts strewn about for the gorehounds — I especially liked the rancid rhino drill — and a good sense of scale, with some fullsized vehicles. Only the finale, which fell a bit flat, held this back from my Top 5.

Stranger Things 5: Much like the Netflix series itself, this last-ever Stranger Things maze marks an improvement over Part 4, but doesn’t reach the heights of the early installments. Animatronic demogorgons and accurate actor look-alikes suitably impress, as does the scale of Will’s awakening and Eleven’s Pepper’s Ghost finale. Unfortunately, much of the show’s emotional core is replaced by a game of Vecna Whac-A-Mole; and both this house and the Return to Hawkins fountain show are shockingly lacking in Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill.” Cybergoria: This cyberpunk cautionary tale about longevity biohacking begins strong with timely AI satire and gruesome visuals resembling an NC-17 cut of Terminator 2. But despite an admirably aggressive cast, this maze quickly grows repetitive, as flesh-festooned Rock ’Em Sock ’Em robots spring mechanically from every corner. Blood-smeared walls and oppressive industrial sounds and smells can’t quite disguise that you’re still just trudging through the former Fast & Furious queue (may it rot in peace). Evil Dead Burn: As a lifelong fan of the original Sam Raimi/Bruce Campbell films, this fairly generic gorefest failed to swallow my soul with any desire to watch this latest reboot/sequel. Best reason to see it: Deadite dog puppets! INVASION: Alien Abduction: Aiello says pitches for this house were rejected for years, and now we know why. Solid rural farmhouse set designs and clever animatronic gags like a levitating goat are undermined by awful Spirit Halloween Store-quality masks and costumes, and the absence of any third-act payoff. If you’re going to skip one maze at Halloween Horror Nights 35, make it this one. skubersky@orlandoweekly.com

RENAISSANCE FARE East Orlando’s Lert Thai Street Food dazzles diners with revitalized classics

e live in the Age of Enshittification. Improvement is increasingly rare and when it happens, it does so slowly and discretely. But there are exceptions: The transformation of Thai food in Orlando has been both meteoric and widespread. And with any movement there are originators — with any renaissance, shining lights. But like Michelangelo and Machiavelli, the luminaries of Orlando’s Thai renaissance are far from monolithic. Talay is not Tuun. Lim Ros is not Noods. Sabai is not Mee Thai, which is not O.G. SEA Thai. I’ve eaten at them all, and each delivers distinctive flair and flavor. But with any thriving scene, there is interplay; patronage and incestuousness, mirroring and mentoring. Lert Thai Street Food is not Isan Zaap, but does play Da Vinci to Isan Zaap’s Verrocchio: Owners Timmy Peengoen and his wife, chef Anna Nilkooha, sharpened their chops at the Michelin Bib Gourmander before going solo with their own finely honed brand of street cuisine at Lert. Lert loosely translates to “excellent” and Lert Thai Street Food is as advertised. In its spartan sliver of a space near UCF, wandering foodies

and college kids mine laminated menus for treasures like grilled pork skewers with sticky rice ($16.95) or spring rolls ($8.95) that scream TLC through crisp, paper-thin wrappers. There is the textural perfection of crispy rice salad with fermented Thai sausage ($16.95) and Laostyle papaya salad with salted crab ($16.95) that’s as fresh and funky as Bootsy Collins. A trove of temptation, all of it solid gold. Bigger bites began with our ritualistic ordering of khao soi ($18.95), crispy chicken and egg noodles in coconut curry. Lert’s is mellower and more harmonized than a wonderfully punchy version enjoyed recently at equally excellent Noods, but accoutrements like red onion and pickled greens allow you to take it in any of many delicious directions. Equally delish was gaeng kiew waan, green curry studded with squid, shrimp and mussels ($21.95), a verdant bowl of silk and aromatics. Chinese broccoli with pork belly ($19.95) highlights the broader influences of Thai street food. Inspiration for Lert’s rendition seems to be China by way of heaven — wonderfully intense with fish, oyster and soy sauces clinging to rich, crackle-crisp pork offset by the bounce of vibrantly colored greens.

Color has meaning at Lert; a treacle-hued plate of shrimp pad Thai ($18.95) crossing the dining room meant good things headed our way. Lacquered with fish sauce, tamarind and caramelized palm sugar, it was the color of done right; ordered as obligatory ode to tradition, but freely and hungrily enjoyed. Chef Nilkooha’s pad krapow with minced pork ($18.95) is among the best versions of this salty, savory and spicy street food staple I’ve ever eaten. OK, “among the best” is a hedge. I can’t recall any better. Served with a runny-yolked fried egg browned and bubbled at its edges, and with just the right amount of holy basil (a lot), this explosion of tightly orchestrated flavors is everything pad krapow should be. It’s truth. A star of a standard from a star of a restaurant that’s far from standard. It’s clear from the quality of its food and hospitality of its owners, Lert is yet another twinkling light in a constellation of Orlando Thai restaurants shining ever brighter. Decades ago, we were introduced to what Thai food is. Today, in Orlando, at places like Lert Thai Street Food, we are being shown what Thai food can be.

THEY’VE BEEN HERE BEFORE

Honorary Orlandoans Arrows in Action play two big gigs at the Social, adding on a clothing drive benefiting the Mustard Seed BY E DUAR DO GO MEZ

T

he gamer-to-musician pipeline exploded after games like 2005’s Guitar Hero and its later cousin, Rock Band, turned living rooms into makeshift stages. For Gainesville’s Arrows in Action, two of the trio’s members found their rhythm about five feet from a TV screen, plastic instruments in hand. “I got to a level where the notes wouldn’t even show up on the screen anymore, so I basically memorized all of ‘Enter Sandman.’ At that point, I didn’t even play the drums, but I remember thinking,‘I think I could actually do this,’” drummer Jesse Frimmel tells Orlando Weekly. Arrows in Action formed in Gainesville — home of the University of Florida — where Victor Viramontes-Pattinson, Matthew Fowler and Frimmel found each other through overlapping stints in the city’s local music scene and eventually on campus. Those run-ins eventually became Arrows in Action, a vibrant alt-rock trio with a knack for getting you to dance through emotional lyrics,

elegantly disguising the ache beneath bright melodies and infectious hooks. The band has since racked up millions of streams across platforms.“Cheekbones,” a single from their latest album, I Think I’ve Been Here Before, found another life on TikTok, helping push the song to roughly 23 million streams on Spotify. At times, the album feels like waking up in the 2000s again, with Panic! at the Disco on the same playlist and a studded belt somehow making its way back into our outfit. But beneath the throwback sheen, the band keeps the record up-to-date with a clean and more modern pop sound. In April, the trio returned to this record, releasing a deluxe edition with previously unheard tracks to brighten the mood a bit. This week, Arrows in Action is setting out on a headlining tour, and Orlando gets first dibs. The tour opens with back-to-back nights at the Social on Thursday and Friday, in a city the band has slowly come to claim as something of a spiritual hometown.

“It becomes the central point where our people from up north and people from all over Florida get to see us,”says guitarist Fowler. Clearly his theory is correct; Friday’s show has already sold out, and tickets for the added Thursday date are going fast. The band are giving that homecoming a little more purpose, too. For both shows, they’ve partnered with the Mustard Seed of Central Florida for a clothing drive, inviting fans to bring donations along with them. This follows the trio’s longtime habit of community engagement, supporting causes from food drives to immigrant rights, Planned Parenthood and more. “We’ve always tried to make it a thing to come up with some way to turn a tour into a way to give back,” says Frimmel. A week after opening their tour in Orlando, that hometown momentum carries them to Louisville’s Louder Than Life, a four-day festival that drew hundreds of thousands of attendees from around the world last year.

The run will look a little different from behind the drumkit, though. After very recently injuring his hand, Frimmel will be stepping away from the kit while he recovers, with Ronnie Strauss of I Don’t Know How But They Found Me expected to fill in. And even as the band heads toward stages that might make their Guitar Hero: Metallica-playing younger selves proud, their own musical tastes have “mellowed out” over the years. This hard-rock spark may have gotten them started, but their influences have expanded much further. As Arrows in Action moves into a broader pop space, the trio is pulling from R&B and artists like Justin Bieber while becoming increasingly interested in the history behind different genres and how those ideas can find their way into their music. For vocalist Viramontes-Pattinson, that evolution still comes with plenty of pop-punk DNA. He points to Panic! at the Disco and Fall Out Boy as major influences, something that comes through in Arrows in Action’s own sound on I Think I’ve Been Here Before. The record is split between brighter pop-rock moments and songs that are awash in heavier emotions, while the deluxe edition makes some extra room for the lighter side of the band. Even its imagery plays with that push-and-pull. The album’s artwork grew from the idea of placing an abstract lighthouse somewhere it seemingly didn’t belong. “People think that you’re supposed to go toward it, but what a lighthouse does is the opposite,” Viramontes-Pattinson says.“If you follow it, you’ll crash into the rocks.” For them, the album represents an interpretative approach to nostalgia and familiarity, likening it to a double-edged sword. When asked what stands out among their previous shows in the city, the band points back to last year’s Warped Tour, where they walked onstage unsure whether anyone would be out in the crowd at all. “We were scheduled to start at the same time as one of the big headliners, and we were telling ourselves, ‘If nobody shows up, that’s OK,’” Viramontes-Pattinson says.“When we finally got out there, you couldn’t see the end of the crowd from where we were. It was probably the most people that we’ve played in front of … and they knew the words!” Arrows in Action returns to Orlando for a tour-opening two nights at the Social. And the crowd will most definitely know the words. music@orlandoweekly.com

LOCAL RELEASES

Claire Vandiver exists between spaces. Musically, the Orlando singer-songwriter has been working the liminal realm between indie, pop and rock. And now, she’s also going to be splitting her physical time between Orlando and her native Nashville to maximize prospects. Over the past decade, Vandiver has steadily established herself as a promising young voice in the Orlando music scene through a steady stream of limited releases, mostly singles. But now, she’s — at last — just released her first fulllength album, titled Evoke. On it, the balancing act that she’s been fine-tuning for years now has crystallized and bloomed. Per her modus operandi, Vandiver’s sound unpacks in measured time. It’s layered pop with immediate appeal but a lingering finish of rich, subtle dimension. That long-brewing chemistry now kindles like never before, resulting in an album with bedroom eyes and cinematic depth. With four advance singles, Vandiver’s been teasing the 11-song Evoke for nearly two years. Now, she finally uncorks the promise without delay on “I Don’t Recall Signing Up for This,” an opener heaving with slow-burn opulence and allure. Within are a couple upbeat glimpses like the sultry dance-pop of “Back by Popular Demand” and the sky-wide soul of “Biggest Bill,”which ably shows the height of her pop possibilities. Mostly, though, Evoke keeps the mood patient and beckoning, where Vandiver casts her deepest spells. Songs like “Say You Will,” “Shy on Believing You” and “Where Were You” are slow dives into inner worlds of majestic seduction. With a Cigarettes After Sex-esque aura, an air that’s at once dreamy and massive, these pillow-pop smashes make Evoke a sleeper knockout of impressive atmosphere. CONCERT PICKS THIS WEEK

The Phantom A.D., American Party Machine, Caustic Bats: According to the big middle aisle in Walgreens, the Halloween season is upon us. Never mind the actual calendar, just give in to the Aisle. Well, this weekend, Will’s Pub will also get into the spooky spirit with The Phantom A.D., a California act that

blends and bends classic horror like Dracula and Wolfman with classic rock & roll like garage, surf and rockabilly. It’s a kooky schtick of haunted, campy kicks that rocks like The Munsters at a beach party. Opening will be Orlando notables American Party Machine, who exist in their own ridiculously costumed alternate reality, and Caustic Bats, a dark punk band who actually have bats in their name. (8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11, Will’s Pub, $15) Eye h a te g o d , W h o re s , N o / M á s , Skeletizer: This is the kind of dream lineup you get when you play fantasy league with your hard rock. First, most discerning metalheads would agree that you swing big with Southern sludge lords Eyehategod to guarantee maximum destruction. Then you pile on Atlanta savages Whores to get really nasty with the grisliest, most bloodthirsty noise rock to come along in a generation. For velocity, it’s gotta be the blinding blend of grindcore, crust punk and death metal of brutal D.C. unit No/Más. Finally, you round it out with Skeletizer for some of the most flame-throwing doom to ever emerge from Orlando. And there it is, one of the most loaded heavy rosters in recent memory. (8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16, Conduit, $25) Buzz Kull, Kontravoid: At long last, we have all come to our industrial music senses again. The EBM revival is real and in full swing in the underground right now, and that makes this the ideal time for the double-headed bill of Australia’s Buzz Kull and L.A.’s Kontravoid. They’re two of the brightest exemplars of electronic body music’s new wave and have proven worthy of carrying the torch for a new, revived nation of dark dancers. of the features drag and live music aplenty, but the true centerpiece promises to be a scissoring contest. (Don’t know what that is or feeling a little offended? Skip to the next selection and let the young people have their fun.) Aside from the pride and pageantry of competitive scissoring, you’ve got live music from Stiletto, Switch Slut and Jacksonville’s very promising Soft. Drag comes from De Sastre, Mariana’s Fat Wench, Kissa Death and more. It’ll be a riot. 7 p.m., Conduit, 6700 Aloma Ave., Winter Park, conduitfl.com, $16.11. — Matthew Moyer FRIDAY, SEPT. 11

Rosalía

Rosalía is the kind of artist who makes predicting her next move nearly impossible. This time, that move is a big arena gig at the Kia Center; it’s a makeup for a June postponement due to a family emergency. Rosalia’s newest album, LUX, follows women across religious history in their search for the divine, pulling classical music into

a slow dance with modern pop along the way. Last time Rosalía came to Florida (back in 2022 for III Points), it was all Motomami, minimalism and that endlessly memed gum-chewing “Bizcochito” performance. Now, she’s fronting a full orchestra and channeling enough art history to make your museum membership jealous. 7 p.m., Kia Center, 400 W. Church St., kiacenter. com, $65-$301. — Eduardo Gomez

R!ot Dykes

Best of Orlando® award winners Dyke Nite are on an unquestioned hot streak this summer, recently wrapping a trans-masc night with Collective Echo and with the Mommy Knows Best dive bar pop-up on the immediate horizon. But we couldn’t let this one pass by without an approving nod. The R!ot Dykes showcase at Conduit

We’re in a really good place for modern EBM nowadays (at least one thing is going well in a slumping United States!). Acts like Corpse Dust, Buzz Kull, Choke Chain and Kontravoid are pushing the format forward while still staying true to the central tenet of “body music” — a pulse for bloodflow, for the heartbeat, for dancing. Possibly the wildcard of the whole scene, though, is Spike Hellis. The Los Angeles-based duo of Cortland Gibson and Elaine Chang are pure wild mercury and untrammeled id. Their performance style is less imperious scowl, more total abandon, and it’s a spirit that infects the audience fully. Spike Hellis are somewhere between Skinny Puppy and Nitzer Ebb, down to their hand-built platform to contain various synths and percussive devices. We’ve seen this spectacle ourselves and walked away floored. 9 p.m., Iron Cow, 2438 E. Robinson St., facebook.com/ironcowsushilounge, $17.85. — MM FRIDAY, SEPT. 11

Gauri B

There are safer places to sit than the front row of a Gauri B show. The Indian comedian has built a massive online following partly by catching

WEEK unsuspecting audience members in her lethal crowdwork. But her “Years in the Breaking” Orlando tour stop gives us the chance to see what happens beyond the viral clips. Gauri’s stand-up uses dark humor and a sharp wit to bring laughs around politics, culture, relationships and social taboos. And remember, laughing at someone else from the audience getting roasted is a sublime job — until she starts looking in your direction. 7 p.m., Alexis & Jim Pugh Theater, Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, 445 S. Magnolia Ave., drphillipscenter.org, $21-$57. — EG SATURDAY, SEPT. 12

Ken Carson

Hip-hop artist Ken Carson always keeps Orlando on his touring radar. So if you weren’t savvy enough to catch him earlier this year at Rolling Loud or in 2024 on his Chaos Tour, you’re in luck! The bleeding-edge MC, known for songs like “Jennifer’s Body” and “Fighting My Demons,” is playing another big Orlando stage to showcase his Billboard-charting new album, Xperiment, along with the just-released (as in a few days ago) mini-album Cartunez. Fresh off a European festival run, Carson live is a fearsome proposition — and this nearly sold-out (as of this writing) Orlando Amphitheater concert shows that locals are reciprocating his touring love. 7:30 p.m., Orlando Amphitheater, 4603 W. Colonial Drive, orlandoamphitheater.com, $100-$298. — Angelina Benbeneck TUESDAY, SEPT. 15

us all with that! — GPFF presents an array of thought-provoking shorts, documentaries and feature films. The fest will this year be headquartered at the Bush Auditorium at Rollins College and the redoubtable Regal Winter Park Village, running through Sept. 19. Things start Tuesday with Break in the Rain, a road-trip drama. Stars Michael O’Keefe and Elizabeth A. Davis will both be in attendance to take questions. Oscarnominated documentarian Marshall Curry comes to town to screen several docs and give a talk at the Winter Park Library. Another timely highlight would have to be The Dads, an Emmy-winning short doc about a group of fathers of trans and nonbinary youth. A week or so later on Sept. 26-27, the fest decamps to International Drive for Global Peace 360 at AFRO-TV with even more screenings and panels. In very dark times, maybe art can provide a much-needed jolt of hope. Various times, various locations, peacefilmfest. org, $10-$125. — MM TUESDAY, SEPT. 15

Glitterer

An otherwise humdrum Tuesday is about to become so much more musically glam, courtesy of Washington, D.C.’s Glitterer. Ever heard of the band Title Fight? Ned Russin, the former vocalist and bassist of that influential emo band, continues the next chapter of his musical story with his alt-punk outfit Glitterer. The project started as a solo endeavor for Russin in 2017, eventually becoming a full four-piece band in 2023. Only one year later, this new-look Glitterer released their first collective album, Rationale. And clearly the chemistry was working, because they followed in short order with Erer in 2025. Glitterer is currently on tour across the U.S. alongside Bleary Eyed and Guttered, and their live sets are high energy with an attendant musical punch, crafting their “wall of sound” live in grand style. 7 p.m., Conduit, 6700 Aloma Ave., Winter Park, conduitfl.com, $20. — AB
