Advocates demanded accountability for immigration arrests at Poinciana hospital

Immigrant rights advocates gathered across the street from the HCA Florida Poinciana hospital in Kissimmee last Friday to demand accountability for two Ecuadorian women who were arrested by law enforcement at the hospital on behalf of ICE. Grace Stephanie Calero Cabanilla, 39, and her daughter Giulianna Mía Carriel Calero, 19, were questioned by Polk County sheriff’s deputies about their legal status at the hospital on Aug. 20, after being transported by ambulance for injuries sustained in a car crash. The mother and daughter entered the U.S. legally in 2023 and 2025, respectively, but allegedly overstayed their period of legal admission, prompting ICE to issue detainers for their arrest. Video footage of deputies questioning, then attempting to separate, the two women as they shrieked in panic and confusion, went viral on social media. Family members say the mom has a pending asylum case and a work permit, while her 19-year-old daughter has a visa that is valid until 2030. Both decided to self-deport following their arrests, according to family.

Nearly two years later, the man tried for the Halloween mass shooting in downtown Orlando in 2024 has been found guilty of first-degree murder. Jaylen Edgar, who was 17 years old at the time of the shooting, killed two and injured several others on Halloween in 2024. He was found guilty of all charges last Monday. He shot a total of nine people, two of them fatally: Tyrek Hill and Tim Schmidt Jr. Another person was injured after being trampled by the crowd. Victims ranged in age from 19 to 39. Edgar was charged with two counts of first-degree murder with a firearm and seven counts of attempted first-degree murder with a firearm. He has attempted to plead insanity in recent months, but evaluations by two psychologists did not support his claim. He chose not to testify or try to convince the jury of his insanity. He is scheduled for sentencing Oct. 20 and faces a lifelong prison sentence.

Public Schools about $1.5 million annually. The adjustment by the district raises school building temperatures from 71 degrees to 74 degrees during the week, and from 74 to 78 degrees when school buildings are unoccupied. According to assistant superintendent of operations Mark Mullins, the school district currently spends $17 to $19 million annually on electricity costs alone. Mullins reassured Fox News 35, however, that the district is continuing to prioritize students through the shift. “Setting the tone of the learning environment is absolutely our number one priority and commitment to our students, our staff and, of course, our families as well.”

Florida Dems called for resignations after Hope Florida report released

Florida Democrats went on the offensive against Republican leaders after the release of a blistering statewide grand jury report that found $10 million in Medicaid funds were “misappropriated” and wound up being used for “political activities.” That report — obtained by CBS Miami and posted on its website — did not result in anyone getting charged but blasted several top state officials, including now-Attorney General James Uthmeier and Jason Weida, now chief of staff to Gov. Ron DeSantis. The report also says U.S. Sen. Ashley Moody, the former state attorney general, knew about the transfer of funds to the Hope Florida Foundation: From a $67 million settlement over Medicaid drug overpricing, $10 million was diverted to the foundation. The foundation “quickly funneled” the money to two nonprofit groups, which then wound up directing some of the money to a campaign against an effort to legalize recreational marijuana. The probe originated after the GOP-controlled House held hearings in the spring of 2025 amid speculation that First Lady Casey DeSantis — who started the Hope Florida initiative — might run for governor.

Volusia County leaders moved forward with a plan to permanently ban the development of largescale data centers, citing pressure from the community and the potential negative effects on the county’s water supply, electricity and quality of life. A 12-month moratorium on large-scale data centers — those with a peak electrical load of 50 megawatts or more — was initially recommended by county staff after they were directed to research the centers’ environmental and health risks back in June. But after hearing reports from county staff and feedback from the public during an hourslong meeting, the eight-member council ultimately voted last week to work toward a permanent ban. County staff will still need to draw up an ordinance, which will be subject to two public hearings where locals can provide their input on the issue. Orlando Democrats gathered at a press conference in downtown Orlando last week in nearly 90-degree heat to slam Republican U.S. Sen. Ashley Moody over her record on healthcare — specifically, her votes in favor of major cuts to Medicaid under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act approved last year, her stocks in the pharmaceutical industry, and her vote to kill off the health insurance subsidies that made Affordable Care Act health insurance plans more accessible for middle- and low-income earners. Orange County Democrat Susan Windmiller, a Medicare recipient who is dealing with health insurance premium hikes, said Moody should “take a play” from the late Dolly Parton. “On a day when we’re all mourning the loss of Dolly Parton, maybe Ashley Moody should take a play from Dolly’s life and her legacy, and start leading with kindness,” Windmiller said. Moody is campaigning to keep her seat this fall, facing off against progressive Democratic nominee Angie Nixon of Jacksonville. The Seminole County public school district raised its air conditioning temperature settings by three degrees in schools to help save money, as the district is reportedly facing a $30 million budget shortfall. Former Gringos Locos staff say they were stiffed on pay after sudden restaurant closures BY MCKENNA S CH UEL ER

ormer employees of Gringos Locos, the popular Orlando Tex-Mex restaurant chainlet that abruptly closed last month, allege their former boss has failed to pay them their full final paychecks, claiming he doesn’t have the money to do so. Employees say they were given no advance notice of the restaurant closures, and they have no idea when, or if, they will be paid. They remain uncertain despite a vague commitment made by their former employer to “get everyone paid.” “After paying out 100% of tips/gratuities, despite my best efforts, the companies only had enough funds to pay 25% of wages from week ending 8/1/2026,”Gringos Locos co-owner Phillip O’Biso wrote in an email to former employees, obtained by Orlando Weekly. “I will reiterate that I intend to get everyone paid for every hour worked as soon as possible, however that will not be possible today.” No update from O’Biso has been provided in the weeks since, according to one former employee. The abrupt loss of their jobs, however, has left some of O’Biso’s employees in dire straits. One employee of 10 years — who asked Orlando Weekly for anonymity because he’s searching for a new job — lives at an extended stay hotel near the former Gringos Locos location on Robinson Street where he worked. Without a full paycheck to his name, however, after being unceremoniously let go from his job of a decade, the worker admitted to the Weekly that he’s not sure he won’t be living on the streets in the coming days if he can’t find a

way to pay for his room.“My rent is due weekly,” he explained. “I might end up with no place to live.” ‘There was no heads up’

Five former employees of the Milk District location told Orlando Weekly they received no advance notice of the owner’s decision to abruptly close all four Gringos Locos locations, including the original spot downtown, after 17 years in business. But Madisin Taylor, a former supervisor, said that chronic health and safety hazards, unpaid bills to vendors, O’Biso’s legal disputes with current and former co-owners, and wage theft allegations make the closure less of a surprise and more of a stab in the back. Orlando Weekly reached out to O’Biso for comment for this story, but did not hear back ahead of publication. “I think we kind of had a suspicion. We knew it was going downhill, but it’s also been going downhill for so many years, and there was just no heads up,” said Taylor, who began working at the Robinson Street location in 2018. She actually left her job at Gringos Locos in November, ahead of the closure, feeling the weight of issues at work that were continually left unresolved. “It got to the point where it was affecting my mental health greatly,”she said.“I was like,‘I’m not staying and waiting for my paycheck not to hit.’” She and others allege that workers repeatedly faced paycheck issues.

The longtime employee we spoke to who asked to remain anonymous said, for months, Gringos was allegedly taking money out of his paychecks without his consent. “They took about $400 from me out of my checks over, I think, six months for insurance that I didn’t even have,” he said. “And when I myself, Maddie, and a couple of other managers and general managers contacted them, [they said] ‘Oh, we’re looking into it.’ And I never got my money back.” Other alleged issues — like broken, malfunctioning or dripping AC; a lack of ventilation in the kitchen area; mold and various structural issues — also made life at work difficult, especially during Florida’s hot summer months. “They were really bad towards the end of it, though,” added Jenna Bertran, another former Gringos employee at the Milk District location. “Even the customers were complaining about it.” Under the federal Occupational Safety and Health Act, U.S. employers are required to keep workplaces “free from recognized hazards that are causing or are likely to cause death or serious physical harm to his employees.” That includes dangers posed by extreme heat. “We had no ventilation in that building, so like, our eyes would burn all day long from the butter,”said Taylor. At her location, she said there were no hoods to ventilate the “smoky” steam and odors that emanated from the cooking food. So, why’d they stay?

Taylor and others said they stayed at Gringo’s through the trials and tribulations largely for each other. “That place made family like no other,” she said, adding that in the beginning, the pay was good compared to other places around town. “We suffered together, we succeeded together. … We made the best of what we had,” she said. The anonymous longtime employee added that Gringos used to feel like a better place to work. Things changed during the COVID-19 pandemic, he explained, with changes made at the top by company leadership. “I stayed there hoping that things would get better, because it wasn’t always like that,” he said. Gringos Locos, notably, grabbed headlines nearly a decade ago — not for its award-winning tacos or loyal employees, but for a lawsuit filed by a founder of the restaurant chain who alleged he’d been pushed out of the company. As the Orlando Sentinel reported at the time, Gringos co-founder Robert Bair sued O’Biso and fellow business partners Jeremy Clark and Angela Clark in 2017, alleging they had “wrongfully exclude[d]” Bair from his “rightful ownership interest” and unlawfully hid profits from him. Bair’s lawsuit — still ongoing — acknowledges that his relationship with his business partners at Gringos reportedly “broke down” in the summer and early fall of 2016. He later started his own venture, local taqueria Tin & Taco. Gringos’ lawyer, at the time, dismissed Bair’s allegations against the Clarks and O’Biso, describing the suit as “legal extortion.”

“[Bair is] trying to defame people’s reputation to compel them to give him compensation,” Gringos lawyer Luis Gonzalez told the Sentinel. Former employees told the Weekly this tension up top spilled out into the workplace, as conditions and treatment of employees allegedly continued to deteriorate. “The thing is, if you treat your employees right, they would have stuck with you ’til the end,” said Taylor. “But you didn’t, you had to be sleazy and hide that you were shutting down until the day before.” ‘We have each other’s backs’

The internal issues at one of Orlando’s most popular late-night restaurants only grew in the years after the owners’ split with Bair. In 2023, O’Biso was hit with another lawsuit — this time, filed by the Clarks themselves. The lawsuit, still pending in the Ninth Judicial Circuit Court of Florida, alleges O’Biso engaged in embezzlement, lied under oath in the Bair litigation to “protect his claimed ownership interest,” unilaterally changed restaurant menu prices and made other management decisions without consulting the Clarks, falsified accounting records, and created a “hostile work environment” for Gringos employees. “[O’Biso] has violated his duty of loyalty and duty of care by engaging in reckless and intentional conduct to purposefully harm the company,” the lawsuit reads. “He has also violated his obligations of good faith and fair dealing by engaging in such conduct.” As for the former employees, Taylor said they all started a group chat — across the four former Gringos locations — to share job opportunities, provide any updates on communications with their former employer, and consider other legal options they can take if they aren’t paid as promised. Former Gov. Jeb Bush dismantled Florida’s state labor department more than 20 years ago, leaving Florida with few and flawed options to recover wages they’re lawfully owed. Still, workers in Florida who believe they’ve been underpaid do have the option of filing a complaint with the U.S. Department of Labor — a federal agency facing budget cuts under the Trump administration and record-low staffing levels. “Most of the group have found other jobs,” said the anonymous longtime Gringos employee.“Some of us, it’s a little bit harder to find jobs. I’ve been looking.” Taylor said she decided to speak to the media because she’s worried that O’Biso will try to reopen Gringos, or open a new venture in the Orlando area. She wants the public to know who they’ll be working with, if he does. “We’ve been, you know, suffering in silence for all of these years, and again, I just don’t want to see this happen to anybody else,” she said. “If he does reopen … I don’t want to see anybody else go through the things that we went through.” In the meantime, she said, “We have each other’s backs.” mschueler@orlandoweekly.com

Nosferatu is back on home soil at the Ren Theatre, bigger and bloodier than ever BY GRAYS O N KEGLOVIC

he Renaissance Theatre Co.’s annual adults-only Halloween show is back, bigger and bloodier than ever. This year’s Nosferatu: The Citadel summons audience members to the Great Covening, where they’ll leave the mortal realm and become vampires in this 360-degree production that takes over much of the Ren’s Ivanhoe real estate. Nosferatu: The Citadel opens on Friday and runs through Nov. 7, with the VBar: The Awakening aftershow having already returned like a fell herald last weekend. It’s a home-grown, queer, spooky-season spectacle that draws crowds just as rabid (if not quite as large) as Halloween Horror Nights.

After 2025’s suck-sessful VBar opening weekend with Alaska (of “Your Makeup Is Terrible” fame), the Ren brought in Aquaria from RuPaul’s Drag Race to kick things off in fierce and fangy fashion this year. Running contiguous to Nosferatu, VBar features live music from The Bloodlines, dancers, and a host of rotating drag artists like Angelica Sanchez, Orusha San Miguel, Coco the Siren, Allegra D, Anesthesia, Beatrixx Oddity and more. “If you’re not staying for VBar, you’re only getting half the story,” the Ren’s website warns. Ren artistic director Donald Rupe says that the minds behind Nosferatu use VBar as a place to explore other stories in their vampiric worldbuilding.

“We’ve learned that Nosferatu is such a huge undertaking that it’s actually two different shows, and VBar and Nosferatu deserved their own opening nights,” Rupe tells Orlando Weekly. “VBar has live singers, multiple drag performances and dancers, not to mention all of the tech people. VBar is its own beast.” After the Ren was (ahem) conDAMNED by the city of Orlando in 2025, this year’s immersive home-field return performances will be reminiscent of prior shows, but with bloody pride, pageantry and surprises all its own. “You can expect the same scary, sexy, crazy adult vampire experience that we offer every year, but with an entirely new twist when it comes to the

space and the plot and the story that we’re telling,” Rupe says. “We have tried to make it as detailed as possible.” Rupe says that this year’s Nosferatu has been in the works since last year and that there are actually eight different versions of Nosferatu: The Citadel. As a fully immersive production, the audience’s participation factors into the show they experience. Those who attend multiple shows will witness more diverging plotlines than those who only attend one, according to Rupe. “We have patrons who will absolutely come and see the show all eight times and discover secrets from different plotlines because you follow different characters throughout the experience,” Rupe says.“Other people who just see the show once will still get a satisfying experience; they just won’t get all of the details of every plot.” Associate director of movement and choreographer Darian Payne says that rehearsals are four days a week, having started back in July. The choreography will feature styles ranging from hip-hop to contemporary and everything in between. The Citadel, or the fortress of the Coven, will call back to the now-rich lore of the show, featuring elements from previous years. Payne says that those who have been to prior shows may pick up several references to past years. “We’re continuing the stories of the Royals in the Coven and developing more of what their characters look like to give viewers a little more insight into some of their backstories,” Payne says. “Our biggest surprise is definitely the spaces that we’ve created.” The blood-pumping production of both Nosferatu: The Citadel and VBar includes a strict dress code for all in attendance: all black everything. Before you sink your teeth into tickets, please note that the experience is for those over the age of 18 and that there is a no-cellphone policy for all performances. (Spoilers leaking out would be worse than garlic to these vampires.) Those who disregard the latter rule may be spirited away, quite possibly never to be seen again. “Last year, we really didn’t get to finish our season,”Payne says.“So, I think we’re pulling a lot from what we had last year and just saying,‘How can we make this bigger and better and the best return coming back into this space?’” Tickets to experience Nosferatu are available now, but going fast. This is a campy and pulpy spectacle that is unique to the City Beautiful. “Nosferatu was the first show that the Ren ever produced when we opened,”Rupe says.“We’re very excited to be back to our precious vampire show, and we’ve been working really hard.” arts@orlandoweekly.com

In the 13 years since I last interviewed

actress-entrepreneur Ashley Eckstein, she sold her groundbreaking fashion line to Hot Topic and the Star Wars animated character she originated made the leap to live action. On Tuesday, she returns to Orlando Family Stage — where her career first started — with her husband, MLB All-Star David Eckstein, for the simultaneous releases of his memoir, Just Enough, and her new novel, Lucky 22 (6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8, Orlando Family Stage, 1001 E. Princeton St.; $40-$66; tickets available via Eventbrite). Eckstein spoke with me ahead of their nearly sold-out event about her ever-expanding universe, touching on topics including … Lessons she learned as an Orlando Rep “theater kid”:

I am very outspoken about how, if given the chance, every single kid should do something with theater. There are so many life lessons to learn from being a part of theater, starting with time management. As a child being involved in theater, my parents were very strict that if I didn’t keep up with my homework and my grades, I could not go to theater. Theater was my great love, so I had to figure out how to get everything done and still have time for rehearsal and plays. I’m a big advocate for kids’ mental health, and specifically how the arts and how theater can positively impact your mental health. First and foremost, a sense of belonging. We all need to feel connection; connection is a basic need. Our bodies, our minds need to interact. Our phones are great [but] they’re not meant to replace in-person connection, and what theater does is it brings you together in person. Seeing Rosario Dawson playing her ex-Jedi

character, Ahsoka Tano:

Was I devastated actually that I wasn’t allowed to be a part of the live-action production in any way? Yes, I was, but I very quickly realized, thanks to the fans, that because the character has grown beyond animation, Ahsoka lives in all of us. … So I can be disappointed that I didn’t get to be a part of it, but I can also, at the same exact time, celebrate and have so much gratitude that her story continues. Ahsoka is bigger than ever, and it’s a good time to be an Ahsoka Tano fan. [Lucasfilm president] Dave Filoni promised me I’d always be the voice of Ahsoka in animation, and I’m very grateful that I’ve continued to voice Ahsoka all these years. Changes in fandom fashion since she founded Her Universe in 2010:

Half of all sci-fi and fantasy fans are women and girls, and they weren’t making anything for us to buy and show off our fandom, so I badly wanted to create a safe space for female fans where we could show off our fandom and not be bullied for it. Fast-forward to today, I would say it is an equal space, and it’s something I’m forever proud of because we were able to kind of blaze that trail. Her “90% true” novel (co-written with Samantha Chase) inspired by her real-life romance:

How David and I met and fell in love is a chapter in his book, but I had a feeling people are going to want to know more, because whenever

we tell the story of how we met, they’re like, “Oh my gosh, that’s a movie!” … To my knowledge, it’s the first time a husband and wife have dropped books on the same day, and it really is interesting because we’re telling the same story, but from two different perspectives. You don’t have to know baseball to be inspired by either book, especially David’s. It’s really about family, faith — specifically faith in yourself — and never giving up. My book is also about hope and wishes, and believing that the best is yet to come. … I’m hoping that couples will read both, and basically share notes. Being a proud member of Orlando’s arts community: David and I are just so proud to be from Orlando. This is our hometown; we are products of Orlando, Florida, and we’re very proud of that, and that’s why we continue to make Orlando home. We don’t get enough credit for the arts and culture in our community. The talent that we have is astounding, [and] oftentimes we get overlooked by the big cities, by L.A. and New York. But we have Broadway-level and Hollywood-level talent right here in Orlando. My next project is Disney’s first original audio drama. I get to executive-produce it, and I’m the voice of the lead character in it. We’re going to be recording as much as possible here in Orlando, so I’m just very passionate about doing as much work here as possible, and just telling people how great Orlando is. skubersky@orlandoweekly.com

DO YOU REMEMBER ROCK & ROLL RADIO? From the Beatles to the Ramones, Marky Ramone looks back at the moments that made him ahead of his Orlando gig BY HOU DA ELETR

rooklyn-raised drummer Marc Steven Bell, better known to punk fans worldwide as Marky Ramone, has spent most of his life behind a drumkit, helping shape the sound of punk rock through countless performances with the Ramones. And he is set to honor this buzzsaw legacy at the Plaza Live on Thursday. As a young boy, there was a moment when Ramone watched the Beatles perform on television and immediately understood something was different about this band. It wasn’t just the music. It was the way the four musicians looked and sounded together, each one contributing to the larger sound and spirit.

“I saw the Beatles as a little boy on The Ed Sullivan Show, like millions of other people, and I was very impressed, very influenced. I looked at them as a bunch of cartoon characters, but very animated. But the way they looked together impressed me because they looked like a unit,” Ramone tells Orlando Weekly. That idea of a band functioning as a tight-knit and visually seamless gang would eventually become central to Bell’s own career, especially his pivotal transformation into one of the brothers Ramone. When he first saw the Ramones live in 1975 — at CBGB, of course, the legendary New York dive bar and music venue — he knew then that the

band would be crucial to the then-nascent punk rock scene. “The Ramones looked like a unit, a band, and that to me was very important,” Ramone says. Around the age of 12, after a childhood spent banging on various objects in rhythmic fashion, the future Marky Ramone began figuring out how to make music himself. He earned money working as a delivery boy and used it to piece together his first drum set. Upsetting his parents with the endless percussive racket didn’t faze him. Though his mother and father preferred jazz and traditional standards, his ears were drawn toward something louder and more primal.

Rock & roll came calling. “Everybody has a calling. That was mine,” he says. Ramone began developing his own drumming style through practice, with some early lessons from a jazz drummer. His influences would eventually stretch across genres, from jazz virtuoso Buddy Rich to rock-drumming godheads like Keith Moon, Mitch Mitchell and Ginger Baker. For Ramone, a band’s relationship with its audience is just as important as the music itself. The point is to create an experience people could carry with them long after the show ended. “To bring enjoyment and entertainment to people, to see them having a good time, that’s really what it’s all about,” Ramone says. His approach to his performances and the Ramones as a unit was one of service to the pogo-ers, dancers and thrashers in the audience. “Let’s face it, you know, it’s not a perfect world. But if you can bring enjoyment to somebody for an hour-and-15, hour-and-20 minutes, then you accomplished something,” he explains. And though this world can’t be perfect, a song can sometimes be. In the spring of 1978, the Ramones went to Media Sound Studios on 57th Street in New York City to record “I Wanna Be Sedated.” “It took two takes, meaning two tries to get it right, and what you hear is what it is,” Ramone says. An anthem was born, and it still sounds like a fresh rush of adrenaline nearly 50 years later. It’s hard to believe that a song so pivotal, one among many pivotal moments in Marky Ramone’s career with the leather-jacket clad troublemakers from Queens, all came from an offhand question posed posted during a hang session at CBGB with Dee Dee Ramone. Fresh from a stint playing in Richard Hell’s Voidoids, Marky remembers the events well. “He asked me if I would join the Ramones. I said, ‘Yeah!’” he recalls. “So we all got together, had a meeting, and then we went to a rehearsal studio, and we started playing a few Ramones songs. And it worked. So at that point, I was christened Marky Ramone.” The rehearsal worked, and his new name stuck. Now the living history that is Marky Ramone — one of the last Ramones standing — is making his way to Orlando. He’ll bring decades of experience, stories and the unmistakably rebellious rhythms of the Ramones to a new generation of fans, as well as plenty of people who remember exactly where they were when they first heard Marky Ramone’s punk heartbeat. music@orlandoweekly.com

Nick Scout is either going about it so wrong or so right. Under the moniker Scout, he’s just made his solo debut with a new album. But you’ve likely not heard it. That’s because it’s a very limited, vinyl-only release. Specifically, only about 150 copies. And, gulp, no streaming. This is a formula for either tantalizing exclusivity or guaranteed obscurity. By today’s standards, it may as well not even exist. But there’s another possibility. “I did vinyl-only sort of as a protest, to be honest,” says Scout. “I guess I wanted to remind myself and others that it’s OK to just be an artist, to not worry about making .0001 cents per stream and what will sell and what you have to do to ‘make it.’ To just make the music you want to make and release it in a way that will find its way into the right hands if it is meant to.” As such, the Equinox/Solstice LP is, through and through, a purist’s product. It’s also a proper introduction to Scout. Nick Scout is already well-established as a composer (in the Central Florida Composer’s Forum and in film), luthier (Scout Guitars) and guitar tech (Steve Vai Band, Less Than Jake, Blue Man Group). But under the name Scout, he’s only just emerging fully as a solo artist. As a player and string aficionado, Scout is

staggeringly diverse, and this unabashedly prismatic album testifies. On it, he employs about nine different guitars spanning acoustic, electric, resophonic, 20-string harp guitar and even

the personal guitar of Dante Frisiello from the Steve Vai Band. Stylistically, Scout flexes his palette here with abandon. There’s some minimal guest accompaniment throughout, but Scout’s own playing is the unquestionable feature. If anything, Equinox/ Solstice is a comprehensive primer on his range and ability. The acoustic A-side encompasses folk (“A Roosevelt Summer”), blues (“Lorraine Hotel Hymn”), gypsy jazz (“La Danse des Rats”) and contemporary classical that goes from dynamic drama to meditative reverie. Because the B-side is electric and features some electronic production, it leans more modern and features strands of indie (“Fox Iver”), post-rock (“Early Memories”), future R&B (“It Could Be Anyone,” which features guest vocalist Cole NeSmith) and contemporary soul (“Art District”). Moreover, since many of these short cuts are more snippets than full songs, the B-side plays like a mixtape. All told, it’s a wonderland of manifold styles and virtuosic stringmanship. As well as a debut, the ultra-limited Equinox/Solstice is a proclamation of artistic defiance, a work that opts for depth of experience over wideness of exposure. It’s the opening shot of an artist who’s chosen to emerge wholly on his own terms. “I, personally, love the idea of having something physical to see,” Scout says. “Something someone took time to think about and create, not curate … It’s kind of intimate when you think about it.” Deluxe splatter-vinyl copies of Equinox/ Solstice can now be purchased at the hot new AMP’d Guitar Den and at Park Ave CDs.

Reality television icon, entrepreneur and meme royalty Tiffany “New York” Pollard is coming to Orlando’s Renaissance Theatre Co. as host of a special Off the Record Wednesday. Pollard will hold court during “OTR-TV,” a reality television-themed evening of drag. What do you suppose a musician does on their birthday? Perform, of course. Orlando bassist, guitarist and bandleader LaVon Rushing spends his at Judson’s Live this week. Raised in a musical family in Newport News, Virginia, Rushing brings a custom seven-string bass and an impressive CV that includes sharing stages with Charlie Wilson, Hilary Duff and Yandel, plus international performances from Los Angeles to Egypt. Rushing’s music is poised between gospel, funk, jazz, rock and progressive R&B, and you just might find yourself tempted to rise out of your comfy seat at Judson’s and dance. Disney Springs will be very sonically lucky over the long holiday weekend with Raglan Road’s Great Irish Hooley going strong for four days. The Disney Springs pub hosts a score of Irish musicians, step dancers and singers, all accompanied by beverages and snacks from the Emerald Isle. Live music kicks off early afternoon Friday and doesn’t stop from there, with featured sets from The Consequences, Folk Division (not a Joy Division/Pogues hybrid proposition, unfortunately), Men of Aran, Northern Crossing, Plain Sailin and Adam Sheahan. Just as intriguingly, Raglan will cross streams and roll out their Halloween menu too for this weekend, including Samhain Sangria, Bandaged Bangers, Irish Pumpkin Shake and Ghostly Guinness Pie. Weekend update: Orlando gets Jack Harlow for his only Florida show this weekend. You might remember SNL poking fun at him earlier this year with a note-perfect imitation (complete with bungled dap and freestyle) after he said making newest album Monica made him “Blacker.” He’s since described the album as less “braggadocious,” pulling back from rap’s self-validation in favor of more reflective writing. On stage, expect to hear new (sometimes brand-new and unheard) material before familiar tracks like “What’s Poppin’” and “Industry Baby” work their way in. Watts Tour Kickoff

Watts, Orlando’s homegrown hardcore outfit, are hitting the road. But before they venture off into the great unknown via I-95, they’re playing an Orlando show. Promoters The Coop and Montgomery Drive have organized a stellar sendoff, featuring bands from near and far: Life Chord, Zero Mob, Retina and Helvetica. It’s been a little over a year since Watts released their EP, Slowly Conditioned (and sat down with Orlando Weekly to talk about it), but momentum is still very much on their side. With an origin story rooted in high-school friendships and a burgeoning local hardcore scene they are actively shaping, Watts are making their mark on the underground and putting Orlando on the map. Labor Day Jazz Festival

A holiday jazz fest started up in Chicago is moving south this year to Timucua Arts White House to close out Labor Day weekend. The day features sets from heady locals and Windy City jazzers in various trio and quartet lineups, including pianist Jim Holman, guitarist LaRue Nickelson, percussionist Johnbern Thomas, bassist Alejandro Arenas, bassist Mark Neuenschwander and drummer Ian Goodman. Heading up all the fun is superlative Chi-town saxophonist and hard-bop revivalist Eric Alexander, playing two sets to wind both up and down the evening. The $50 ticket is a bit more expensive than usual for Timucua shows, but this gets you not only a long day of music, but a cookout and free beer. Duties and responsibilities will support research faculty, post-docs, and graduate students in running workloads in on-premise HPC environments, national research computing grids, and cloud environments, leveraging high-speed research networks; enabling large-scale data transfers; and supporting machine learning and AI workloads. The goal is to advance UCF researchers’ science by providing tools and services, such as high-performance computing, cloud computing, research data processing, and research storage. Remote work/telecommuting is permitted. Position requires a Bachelor’s degree and 4 years of relevant experience in each of the following: conducting research; supporting faculty and graduate students; teaching or training; and hands-on experience in HPC or parallel computing systems. Demonstrated experience in python, R and MATLAB, and developing AI algorithms is also required. The required experience could have been obtained during graduate studies.
