Winter Park advanced paid parking pilot at Lake Baldwin Park, Dinky Dock
Winter Park city leaders advanced a plan to create a paid parking pilot program at Lake Baldwin Park and Dinky Dock, effective next spring, as the city explores ways to bring in extra city revenue. The goal of the pilot program, according to city documents, is “to modernize management, improve operational efficiency, and offset expenditure cost to support municipal services.” Parking at these locations would remain free for Winter Park residents who register their vehicles with the city (up to two per household) and receive a permit. For others, parking would likely cost in the ballpark of $2 to $3 an hour, or a daily flat rate of $20 per day. Currently, a majority of those who park at Lake Baldwin Park, for instance — which contains a popular dog park — are non-Winter Park residents. Although the Winter Park city commission unanimously voted in favor of the plan last week, the pilot program still needs to be drawn up as an ordinance for city leaders to approve. That means a public hearing (i.e., opportunity for public comment) will be required ahead of any final vote.
Florida proposed stronger protections for sloth imports after Sloth World tragedy
Conservationists raised concerns last week that proposed rule changes in reaction to the deaths of more than 50 imported sloths for the once-planned Sloth World attraction in Orlando do not go far enough. During an online hearing that lasted over an hour, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission outlined plans to require facilities and cages used to handle imported sloths to meet the same requirements as capuchin, spider and woolly monkeys and for the owners to document either 1,000 hours of sloth-specific experience or 500 hours as well as passing a written exam before a permit is approved. Those rule changes would also increase the minimum age of applicants from 16 to 18. Sloths would remain classified as Class III wildlife, a category for non-native, non-domesticated species such as lemurs, foxes and various reptiles requiring minimal oversight. While supporting the “direction of these changes,” Zara Palmer, representing the Sloth Conservation Institute and Sloth Conservation Foundation, said, “We do not believe they go far enough to protect sloths in Florida.” Palmer added that the proposals should also apply to existing permit holders. The proposed changes are expected to go before the agency’s commissioners during its December meeting.

Angie Nixon said there are ‘$10 million reasons’ to oppose Ashley Moody for Senate
Three weeks after her double-digit victory in the Democratic U.S. Senate primary, Angie Nixon is making her case to general election voters by linking GOP incumbent Ashley Moody to Donald Trump. Nixon argued Moody “rubber-stamps everything he does,” as well as referring to Moody’s involvement in the Hope Florida saga. The recently leaked Hope Florida grand jury report revealed that while no indictments resulted from an investigation led by State Attorney Jack Campbell, the panel found that the DeSantis administration “misappropriated” $10 million of taxpayer money in 2024, and that Moody, as the state attorney general, was aware of plans to divert those funds to the Hope Florida Foundation and authorized her former chief deputy to sign the settlement agreement. Speaking at a church last week, Nixon said “two scammers” represent Florida in the U.S. Senate, referring to Moody and Medicare fraudster Rick Scott. “And now we have one who’s unelected; who, her reward for stealing $10 million dollars from medically needy kids and unhealthy children was to be appointed to this U.S. Senate by scamming,” she said. Nixon added that there are “$10 million reasons why y’all don’t need to vote for Ashley Moody.”
Florida’s AG sued Netflix over alleged targeting of kids, data privacy concerns
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier’s push against major tech companies expanded last week to include Netflix. He filed a lawsuit against the entertainment streaming company, claiming it violated state law by telling consumers it wouldn’t track and sell their data to advertisers, and that it’s targeting children to keep them “tethered to the screen.” The lawsuit, filed in the 7th Judicial Circuit in St. Johns County, details how Netflix told consumers for years it didn’t track user data, before switching to sell their subscribers’ information to advertisers. The lawsuit was filed one day after Uthmeier said he’ll push for new laws to put criminal penalties on artificial intelligence companies whose products abet in crimes. He’s already investigating OpenAI for how the alleged gunman who killed two and wounded five at Florida State University last year used its ChatGPT product to plan the shooting. A lawsuit against Roblox, an online gaming platform, over its alleged failures to protect children from sexual predators, is also pending. And Uthmeier didn’t sign on to the recent settlement with Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, making Florida one of the only states not included in the settlement. Uthmeier said the protections Meta is pledging to put in place for teenage users aren’t enough.

DeSantis administration approved extra $240M for immigration enforcement As Ron DeSantis’ turn as governor nears its end, a legislative spending committee voted along partisan lines to approve budget amendments allowing him to pay for his crackdown on immigration. The Joint Legislative Budget Commission approved a $240 million general revenue transfer to the Emergency Preparedness and Response Fund and agreed to allow the Division of Emergency Management, which operates the fund, to spend up to $250 million to pay pending invoices related to immigration enforcement; hurricanes Idalia, Helene and Milton; and the 2026 wildfires. The approval came about an hour after the DeSantis administration submitted an overdue report to commission members who were poised to start the meeting. The report, which details in part how

PLANTING JUSTICE, REAPING DIGNITY Nursery workers in Apopka and across Florida are urging growers and retailers to agree to adopt standards that protect workers against hazards on the job BY MCKENNA S CH UEL ER
T
he world’s largest houseplant grower is facing pressure from agricultural workers in Apopka and across Florida to adopt enforceable outdoor worker safeguards, including protections against extreme heat, pesticides, and other labor abuses such as wage theft and sexual harassment on the job. It’s part of a new “Planting Justice” campaign formally launched by worker advocacy groups this past Valentine’s Day. “About 80 percent of the plants that are being produced in the United States are being grown and cultivated here in the state of Florida, and it’s really places like Homestead, like Apopka, that are the epicenter of that national industry,” said Oscar Londono of the Miami-based advocacy group WeCount!, speaking to Orlando Weekly outside the Farmworker Association of Florida headquarters in Apopka last week. Costa Farms, a multibillion-dollar company based out of Homestead, is the largest grower of houseplants in the world. It sells plants to customers directly and through major retailers such as Amazon, Lowes, Home Depot, Target and Whole Foods. “We’re calling on Costa Farms to be the first major grower to join this program — to set the example not just in Florida, but wherever they do business with nursery workers here in the country,” said Londono.
‘The human cost of houseplants’
Agricultural workers organized with the Farmworkers Association delivered a petition to Costa Farms’ office in Apopka last Tuesday — one day after Labor Day — urging the company to sign onto their Planting Justice program. Workers first asked Costa Farms to voluntarily sign on several months ago, but so far, the industry giant has refused to answer their call. Workers are asking the supply chain to consider what they call the “human cost of houseplants” as they profit from their labor. “We are working people with families and children who depend on us,”said Yesica Ramirez, general coordinator for the Farmworker Association, speaking to press in Spanish last week. “Our work in agriculture is often very invisible, but incredibly important.” A report released earlier this year by WeCount, coinciding with the launch of the Planting Justice campaign, shared that, out of more than
300 South Florida plant nursery workers surveyed in 2024, 86 percent reported experiencing accidents or injuries on the job. Nearly half — 40 percent — said they had never received any health and safety training from their employer, even though nursery workers are particularly vulnerable to the dangers of extreme heat from working outdoors. A majority of Florida’s farmworkers are women, immigrants and other workers of color, according to advocates. “No one else has to ask for a water break in this state, which has been denied time and time again at the state Legislature, who has ensured that the people working in 100-degree temperature does not get the local protections from local governments because their companies, such as Costa, don’t automatically provide them,” said Ericka Gomez-Tejeda, an organizer with the Hope Community Center and leader in the local Immigrants Are Welcome Here Coalition. In 2024, influential business groups like the Associated Industries of Florida and Florida Chamber of Commerce aggressively lobbied Florida’s Republican-controlled state Legislature to pass a law (HB 433) prohibiting local governments from requiring employers to protect their workers against dangers of extreme heat. There is no workplace safety requirement under federal law that is specific to extreme heat exposure either — even for those working outdoors. “How can we ask the people who feed us to die for us?” asked Gomez-Tejeda, speaking outside the Farmworker Association. “We cannot. And today we are asking Costa Farms to take a leadership role and lead by example for our communities — for all communities — and for these workers who are so essential to our lives in Apopka, in Florida, and everywhere.” Nearly 3,000 people so far have called or sent letters to Costa Farms urging them to partner with the Plant Justice program, according to Londono. Costa Farms told Orlando Weekly in a statement that it already has a proven, industry-leading safety record, touting awards it’s received from the Orlando Sentinel (2025 Best Workplace Award), the South Florida Manufacturers Association (Manufacturer of the Year) and the insurance news site Property Casualty360 (2026 Work’s Comp Risk Management Award). “While standardized programs like the Planting Justice and the Fair Food Program can
be valuable for some growers, our size and scale have allowed us to build customized, comprehensive policies and procedures to meet our workforce’s specific needs,”a Costa Farms spokesperson told Orlando Weekly in a statement.“We’re continually improving our policies and practices to stay ahead of the needs of our team.”
Origin story
Planting Justice is less “standardized” than Costa Farms claims it is. It’s a collaborative approach, modeled after the worker-driven social responsibility (WSR) framework first adapted for the Fair Food Program. Developed by and for workers directly affected, this framework relies on employers — in this case, growers and retailers — that are willing to commit to a code of conduct, applied throughout their supply chain, that includes enforceable health, safety and labor standards. “A key part of this program is that unlike a lot of the programs of corporate responsibility that are symbolic, voluntary pledges by companies to do the right thing, there’s real, meaningful enforcement,” Londono told OW. The Planting Justice framework includes elements of worker-to-worker education — so the workers themselves can better understand their rights — as well as what Londono describes as “market-based enforcement.” “For nurseries that do not follow the code of conduct, they lose out on business with major retailers and major growers. And so there’s both the cost of noncompliance, but also the incentive,” he explained. “We want to make sure that we’re incentivizing and rewarding responsible employers, and so it’s responsible employers who ultimately should be the ones doing business with these retailers and major growers.” The U.S. houseplant industry alone is worth an estimated $50 billion, according to WeCount. Although agricultural workers in Florida face numerous obstacles to securing stronger labor protections — from business-friendly policies under state law to weaker protections for farmworkers under federal labor law — there’s precedent for worker victories in the industry. In 2001, agricultural workers from South Florida organized the Fair Food program campaign to end labor abuses perpetuated by a supply chain of tomato growers and fast food giants like Wendy’s, Taco Bell and McDonald’s

who buy their product. Through protests, rallies and marches, everyday workers managed to pressure major fast-food chains like McDonald’s into adopting a code of conduct to protect workers against labor abuses such as wage theft and sexual harassment. At least 14 retailers, including Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods Market and Walmart, have committed to not buy produce from growers that break rules outlined in the code of conduct. Kroger and Publix, notably, have steadfastly refused to sign on since 2011. The Fair Food Program, today, covers more than 25,000 workers in 23 states and three countries. “Yesterday we celebrated Labor Day across the country,” said Londono, surrounded by allies with the Immigrants Are Welcome Here Coalition, Central Florida Jobs With Justice and the Farmworker Association.“It’s a day when we honor the workers and labor activists throughout history whose struggles and sacrifices gave us the minimum wage, the eight-hour workday, health and safety laws, and many of the basic rights that millions of workers in this country now enjoy.” “These rights were not gifted to workers by their employers or by politicians,” he pointed out.“They were hard-fought, and they were won with sacrifice, solidarity and collective action.” According to Londono, that’s exactly the kind of tradition that Florida’s plant nursery workers today are organizing to continue.“As the world’s largest plant nursery and a national consumer brand, Costa Farms can choose to continue its silence and inaction, or they can do the right thing and take a leadership role in transforming the industry. They can work with us to set a new gold standard for all plant nurseries.” mschueler@orlandoweekly.com

WHERE EVERYBODY KNOWS YOUR NAME Debuting lesbian dive bar pop-up Mommy Knows Best might just end up an Orlando gay Cheers BY MATTH EW MOYE R
T
wo things that are thin on the ground in Orlando nightlife — a city that seemingly never met a craft cocktail it didn’t go gaga over — are no-frills dive bars and lesbian bars. A new pop-up concept taking over Conduit this week, Mommy Knows Best, is attempting to fill both of these voids. T Madan-Felten, a member of the Orlando chapter of the Dyke Nite events collective and a bartender at LGBTQ+ spot Outpost in Thornton Park, is the brains behind this quirky monthly pop-up, intended partly as a tribute to a long-gone Orlando bar. “I love dive bars. When I first moved to Orlando, my absolute favorite bar was St. Matt’s. I just loved it there. Rest in peace for real,” Madan-Felten tells Orlando Weekly. “Obviously, there’s a lot of really
cool queer events, and I love them. I help organize them. I go to them. But there’s just something about going somewhere and having just a jukebox and the connections that you make.” Maybe it’s because our own brains are pickled from watching endless episodes of Cheers growing up, but they are really onto something here. Beyond just cheap, strong pours vs. elegant prepared cocktails debate, the dive bar at its best can be a multigenerational, working-class neighborhood gathering spot. Orlando still has a few true-blue dive bars like Spatz, Whiskey Lou’s, Burton’s and Nora’s Sugar Shack and they’re great. But there’s a definite need being addressed here. “Dive bars are working class. They’re for the outcast-y people. They’re intergenerational, which is something I don’t always see at the club, queer
T MADAN-FELTEN (COURTESY PHOTO)
intergenerational spaces. We’re literally losing history and the ability to make connections with people different from ourselves because we’re going to such hyper-curated things,” says MadanFelten.“Which again, I love a hyper-curated event. Dyke Nite obviously has a specific audience, but there’s something about a mixed bag that I think teaches a person about so many things.” Conduit, always a venue up for taking a chance (tell us another space that has hosted both ultra culty Satanic metal legends Profanatica and trans-focused drag showcase Gala of Ghouls … within just over a week of one another), seemed a natural home. Added points if you remember its previous incarnation as dive bar (which happened to have a live stage) the Haven Lounge. “I thought of Conduit because it’s cool as hell. The owner’s cool. I like the people there, and it gives divey, which is what I want. I wanted things to be like grimy and cool, random fliers and all that type of shit,” Madan-Felten says. “The first few will just be me bartending along with Amber Teicher, who’s the lead of their bar program. … Eventually the hope is to have guest bartenders, different dykes around town who bartend in restaurants or other clubs.” Mommy Knows Best is a satisfyingly simple concept: Come hang out. Grab a drink. Socialize. You will probably end up talking at least briefly to someone you wouldn’t necessarily otherwise.
There will be an ad hoc jukebox/Touchtunes situation for music (for better or for worse), and there should be darts on offer. Madan-Felten sees it potentially as one of the increasingly rare and coveted “third spaces.” In true DIY fashion, Madan-Felten is scouting Facebook Marketplace to find a couch or a couple of cozy pieces to give the pop-up proper divey ambience beyond Conduit’s flyer bedecked walls. Past that, they just want things to happen organically, visually and beyond. “My favorite spaces are the ones that just feel like some crazy cat lady’s garage. Just tchotchkes, random ‘where is that from?’I love that aesthetic and it takes time to build that up,”says Madan-Felten.“The thing about a dive bar is it’s cool because it becomes co-created over time by who goes there.” Madan-Felten illustrates that point by enthusing about the colorful paper fish hanging aquarium-like from the ceiling of Stardust Video, spontaneously created by Orlando artist and Stardust fixture Doug Rhodehamel as a tribute to the memory of his friend Dave Plotkin. “I think I would have done my job if people start to feel a sense of ownership in it,” MadanFelten adds. There will be a drink special that’s highly conceptual — and yet not. “We’re doing an experience drink, if you will. It’s gonna be called ‘Mommy Thinks You’re Doing a Good Job.’ It’ll be like $15, and you’ll get whatever domestic or can you want,” says Madan-Felten. “I will hold the beer for you and feed it to you as I’m giving you affirmations about what a good job you’re doing. And optionally a kiss on the forehead at the end. I just wanted to have something very campy and kind of hot, but also kind of stupid, but also kind of nice.” Beyond the in-jokes and nostalgia for times that will perhaps never return, there’s community-building at work here. “I want to be clear that it’s dyke-centered, for all the people who come under ‘dyke,’ right? So like lesbians, trans-masc people, trans-femme people, bisexual, all these people fall under ‘dyke’ if that’s how they identify, so they are the center. But also, there are people who love dykes and feel comfortable in those places because dyke spaces tend to be very accepting of trans people in a way that not all mainstream places are,” says Madan-Felten. “I think that with lesbian spaces, the reason people love them so much is because they tend to be more accepting and open. Whatever the reason that you’re here, I’m not going to question it as long as you’re not being an asshole.” Mommy Knows Best takes place the second Monday of every month at Conduit. arts@orlandoweekly.com

Despite a desperate desire to avoid dampness, we dove into Dollywood’s NightFlight Expedition and Norwegian Cruise Line’s Great Tides Water Park I use my backyard swimming pool
twice a year, and revisit flume rides included in my theme park annual passes about half as often. But despite my desperate desire to avoid dampness, I recently departed Florida to dive into Dollywood’s NightFlight Expedition and Norwegian Cruise Line’s Great Tides Water Park, brand-new bucket-list water-based attractions which might end up influencing the H2O-centric competition here in Orlando. As the last living secular saint that nearly all Americans agreed on, Dolly Parton left an indelible impact on popular culture akin to Walt Disney, so I’ll be forever grateful that I finally visited Dollywood a couple weeks prior to her passing. Unable to appear in person at her Pigeon Forge theme park for the debut of its biggest-ever investment, Parton pre-recorded a welcome message wearing angelic-looking butterfly wings that proved eerily prescient only days later. In spite of Dolly’s absence, I was excited to experience NightFlight Expedition, the most expensive expansion to Dollywood’s newest land, Wildwood Grove. Billed as a first-of-its-kind “immersive indoor adventure coaster,” the ride — whose design won awards for MACK Rides before it was even built — blends slow dark-ride scenes set in a storybook-style forest, a screenbased motion simulator, and short roller-coaster dips into darkness, with a seemingly free-floating boat trip. The attraction’s highlight is a short stretch of whitewater rapids with just enough splashing to be exciting but not soaking (unless you’re seated in the front row). MACK’s ride system is legitimately revolutionary in its unique combination of different
experiences, and there’s a lot of imagination and artistry evident throughout the attraction. However, anyone traveling to Tennessee this season specifically to ride NightFlight Expedition — or hoping its clone could come to Orlando — should temper their expectations. For starters, the ride’s theoretical hourly capacity is around 1,000 guests per hour, and it handled a fraction of that during my visit. That’s too low for the rumored Creature from the Black Lagoon ride currently commencing construction at Epic Universe’s Dark Universe. Second, NightFlight’s storytelling is frustrating to follow and ultimately unsatisfying, due to a combination of indistinct dialogue in the queue and ride, inferior computer-generated video elements, awkward pace-breaking scene transitions and a fundamental lack of dramatic payoff to the plot. Fortunately, Dollywood has acknowledged the attraction’s issues, briefly closing it post-opening for tweaks and promising future improvements. And the resort as a whole — from its attractively landscaped hotels that include free express passes for the park’s world-class roller coasters, to the Broadway-worthy live entertainment and addictive cinnamon bread — is well worth Orlando-area enthusiasts hopping on an inexpensive Allegiant flight from Sanford to Knoxville. A few weeks after returning from Dollywood, I set sail on another aquatic adventure, this time aboard Norwegian Cruise Line’s Getaway. Our destination: a media preview of Great Tides Water Park at Great Stirrup Cay, the newest
expansion on the cruise industry’s oldest private island. Located within sight of Royal Caribbean’s Perfect Day at Coco Cay, NCL’s addition boasts a beautiful blue 170-foot tall multi-slide tower that’s both taller and significantly less garish than their competition’s. That sets the park’s aesthetic tone, with tropical landscaping and scenic stonework comparable to Typhoon Lagoon or Volcano Bay, albeit on a smaller scale. Great Tides’E-Ticket attraction, the Breakwater Blasters dueling water coaster, begins at the very top of that tower. Luckily, conveyor belts mean you don’t have to carry your two-person rafts to the top for this or most of the other Whitewatermanufactured slides. It only offers one large down-and-up hill (compared to multiple on Volcano Bay’s Krakatau Aqua Coaster) but that one drop’s a doozy, and I loved the colorfully illuminated tunnels you careen through. The tower lacks a Summit Plummet-esque extreme drop slide, and I was less than enamored of Tropic Spiral, the first-of-its-kind Nautilus slide that sent me sliding helplessly backwards in pitch darkness for most of the way. But I did appreciate the side-by-side Rapid Mat Racers and Whitewater Dash body slides — featuring more colorful tunnels along the route, and competitive countdown timers at the splashdown — which keep throughput high enough that I never stood in line for a slide. Bonus points go to the nearby Cliffside Cove’s deceptively simple cliff jump and giant slide, which triggered flashbacks of my youthful near-fatal visits to New Jersey’s infamous Action Park.
Wandering River, an 800-foot-long lazy river, was my most anticipated Great Tides attraction, thanks to its unique multimedia indoor tunnel section. CGI sealife appear on video screens above and alongside your inner tube, accompanied by ethereal orchestral music, and I saw a few different variations during my various laps around. Unfortunately, the final portion of the tunnel appears obviously unfinished, with bare black walls that aren’t sufficiently curved to block out the light, and the route leading up the tunnel is rather barebones, with no interactive water features. Perhaps Wandering River’s best feature is the adjoining Floataway Bar, which (thanks to accepting drink packages) was always the busiest spot in the park. Just don’t try floating downstream with your drink. During a press conference, NCL executives mentioned possible improvements and expansions; hopefully a wave pool and some larger group raft rides are high on the agenda, because for now there isn’t much that an entire family can do together, particularly if one of them has mobility challenges. Pricing hasn’t been officially publicized, but employees suggested admission costs around $80-$100 per person (on top of your cruise fare), putting it on par with Disney’s and Universal’s water parks. I’d personally rather spend that money on onboard specialty dining, especially since Great Stirrup Cay already offers a gorgeous pool and playground for free. But if you stan waterslides without waiting, Great Tides Water Park is guaranteed to get you wet. skubersky@orlandoweekly.com

RESTAURANT OPENINGS:
COCINA DEL SOUL South Orlando’s Francisca taps its muse to tastily fuse Latin comfort foods
FRANCISCA 12325 S. Orange Blossom Trail 407-270-9544 franciscarestaurant.com $$$
BY MICH AEL MUR PH Y
F
rancisca was born in Venezuela. She attended La Universidad del Zulia, owned a chicken farm and cultivated a love of traditional Latin American cuisine during her extensive travels. Francisca is as real as Ronald McDonald. A brand mascot. But unlike the imaginary clown who poisons the world with imaginary eats, Francisca has inspired a menu of Latin soul food that is very much real deal. Francisca Charcoal Chicken & Meats is the product of Bocas Group in Miami, a restaurant biz focused largely on Latin fusion. The Orlando location of Francisca is its sixth in a chain and the first outside of South Florida. Despite evidence to the contrary, I’m not entirely opposed to chain restaurants. I just approach them warily, as their focus is often not where it should be. At Francisca the focus is on its Josper oven — and it should be. The Josper is the beating heart of Francisca. Its natural wood charcoal and intense heat kiss dishes across a menu that, like the restaurant’s matriarchal muse, travels from country to country. It makes stops in Puerto Rican arroz mamposteao, Dominicaninspired chicharrones and cachapas, mandocas and tequeños from Venezuela, but all trains leave from Chickentown.
My mind’s eye lied. I read “Charcoal Chicken.” I thought chicken joint. I pictured a place far from the one I entered. Although Francisca encourages diners to focus on its oven, the dining room is hard to ignore. Like most Orlando eateries, it’s located in a strip mall. Unlike most, it’s inviting: a spacious and cleverly lit corner bay, warmly colored with subtle industrial nods, one wall featuring a striking coved ceiling swooping above a full bar serving sexy rum cocktails. It’s a surprisingly polished space well-suited to giving charcoal-roasted chicken the star treatment. Chicken is Francisca’s signature ($19 for half a bird plus two sides) and the signature reads crackle-skinned, moist and heady with aromatics. Bonus points for being antibiotic- and hormone-free. If you’ve eaten out in Orlando in 2026, you’ve read the word picanha. Tapa de cuadril is picanha which is rump cap steak, and at Francisca tapa de cuadril ($38) is a full pound of slow-cooked goodness. The Josper locks in flavor and melts its trademark fat cap into tender, juicy and spot-on medium-rare beef. It’s my type of meat and no-potatoes, accompanied by red beans and tostones with toothsome crunch-and-give and a glass of Malbec ($11) as
a ruby-red cherry on top. With meat, there is bread. In a previous life, I had a business partner from Bogotá. Frank would bring pan de bono (traditional Colombian cheese bread) into the office every morning that we would slather in guava paste and devour over coffee. A tasty ritual. Francisca’s pan de bono ($8) featured nicely dense crust, a hot springy interior and tasted of wholesome memory. Roasted branzino ($32) shined in its simplicity — two ample filets with skin blistered picture-perfectly from the grill, playing nicely with sides of fresh sliced avocado and black beans. A dish for people who like fish. I like fish. I liked this fish. We finished with fun-ina-cup: Venezuelan hazelnut marquesa ($12). Think dense, fudgy mousse with all the silky indulgence that implies. It was a sweet end to a satisfyingly real meal. Too many restaurants lose their food in the fog of concept, content to tell us who they are rather than letting their kitchens show us. Francisca manages to do both, to indulge in a bit of brand fantasy but anchor it in tasty fact.
DiVino, a new concept from the owners of Grappolo Cucina Italiana in Winter Park, has opened in the space recently vacated by Pizza Bruno at the Maitland Social. DiVino serves wood-fired Neapolitan pizzas as well as dishes from Grappolo’s menu including bruschetta, antipasto boards, arancini, polpette al ragù, tiramisu, cannoli and pastiera Napoletana … Reeves Sports Bar has soft-opened in the old Swiggs space at 50 E. Central Blvd. downtown offering a proper craft cocktail program and cheffy spins on classic pub grub courtesy of Thriving Hospitality chef-partner Ryan Stewart … Popular mobile op Mae Tao & Son’s Kitchen has opened in the former Izziban Katsu space inside the Lotte Plaza Market food court at 3191 W. Colonial Drive, offering a fusion of Khmer and Lao cuisine … Koa Sushi, blending traditional Japanese and Venezuelan flavors in its sushi rolls, poke, spam musibis, onigiri and arepas, has opened in the former Grilled Cheezus space at 912 N. Mills Ave. … Haldi Restaurant, with its full roster of Indian fare, has opened inside the Holiday Inn/Candlewood Suites at 626 Lee Road near I-4 … Near the airport, Nếp Sài Gòn BBQ & Hot Pot, inspired by “the vibrant streets of Saigon and the warmth of Vietnamese family traditions,” will open later this month near the airport at 6817 Eagle Watch Drive in a former Moe’s Southwest Grill. Expect authentic Vietnamese BBQ, roast specialties, hot pot and Viet street food staples … The Sails of Trelago, a development that sits adjacent to the Trelago Market on Maitland Boulevard, will host locations of Trader Joe’s, Mikado Japanese Restaurant and Canadian breakfast and lunch chain Pür & Simple … Garp & Fuss off Park Ave. in Winter Park has reopened with temporary hours after a fire damaged their kitchen. A full bar and a limited menu are being offered … Turci Italian Deli will open in the old Dunkin’ Donuts space at 3009 Edgewater Drive in College Park serving panini, meats, cheeses, house-made pasta and sauces as well as authentic Italian gelato and coffee. The deli will also have a drive-thru. Look for it to open early next year.
RESTAURANT CLOSINGS: Southern Fowl by former Se7en Bites co-owner Va Propst has shuttered just a few months after opening in the Curry Ford West District … Papa Llama, the Michelin-starred Peruvian restaurant in the Curry Ford West District, has shuttered after 10 years, the last six as a brick-and-mortar.

This kind of thing is such a tragedy, because anyone who’s ever ridden public transportation can tell you bus drivers should always be the ones who get to beat teenagers to death. (Paramount+) Slow Horses — In Season 6, an unknown assailant is picking off the members of the MI5’s underdog unit — a situation that’s going to require them to operate with the utmost stealth and discretion. Isaac Brock just wants to ‘Grateful Dead this shit’ at Modest Mouse’s show in Orlando BY E DUAR DO GO MEZ
O
n Friday, Modest Mouse returns to Orlando just over a year after their last performance at House of Blues, this time behind latest record, An Eraser and a Maze. For vocalist and longtime core member Isaac Brock, part of the reward of still being on the road after three decades leading Modest Mouse is looking out at his audience and seeing more than one generation staring back. “Once you go out there and see that everyone is the same age as you, you’re done! You know, when I was younger, this concept didn’t matter to me at all, but now it matters to me a whole lot to think, ‘Oh, OK, we still mean a lot to people who weren’t born in 1975.’” Modest Mouse formed in Issaquah, Washington, in 1993, releasing their first EP, Blue Cadet-3, Do You Connect?, a year later. Though Brock remains the band’s sole constant member, Modest Mouse’s current lineup includes bassist and multi-instrumentalist Russell Higbee,
percussionist Ben Massarella, drummer Damon Cox and multi-instrumentalist Keith Karman. By the turn of the millennium, the band had become one of indie rock’s defining voices, before 2004’s Good News for People Who Love Bad News pushed them further into the mainstream. The album earned a Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Music Album, while its breakthrough single “Float On” earned its songwriters a nomination for Best Rock Song. Three years later, We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank debuted at No. 1 in the U.S. Now more than three deaces in, Modest Mouse’s An Eraser and a Maze arrives with themes of mortality and existentialism through the hazy logic of a dream and wraps itself in the sort of lyrics Brock is famously known for — turning simple conversations into surging, emotional pop-poetry. Heavy songs like “Third Side of the Moon”and “Dogbed in Heaven/Give It a Skeleton” place
listeners in the frontman’s memories and grief, reflecting on friends who’ve passed. The lyrics may point towards the death of longtime drummer, Jeremiah Green, or Sam Jayne, founder of Love as Laughter and a close friend to Brock. “I love singing ‘Dogbed in Heaven’ live,” Brock tells Orlando Weekly.“We all tried adding stuff to it, but I had kind of a visceral reaction every time someone tried adding instruments to it. I think in the end, what mostly ended up on it was us playing with a piece of horse-hair on strings and some other percussive weirdness.” Brock says bandmate Higbee wrote most of the song before the two continued developing the track together. Fans of the group regularly debate their interpretations of the record via a community thread on Reddit with over 11k weekly visitors. Overall, listeners felt like Modest Mouse was finally hearkening back to their original sound. If the early fan response is any indication, Orlando
audiences will not be disappointed when experiencing these songs live. And Modest Mouse has spent a fair share of time on Orlando stages. The band’s history in the city stretches back at least to a three-night run at the Social in 2004, and they returned to House of Blues as recently as June 2025. Still, ask Brock what he has actually seen of Orlando, and his answer is considerably less extensive. Brock says the city is, indeed, beautiful, but the rigid schedule of touring rarely leaves enough time to explore it. “You’d think we’d see new stuff, but we do almost all of our traveling in the dead of night — wake up at the venue — and you can kinda end up missing it,” Brock says. “Van tours are so much cooler because you’re getting yourself there and you’re usually driving for only part of the night, so you get to see the transition from where you were to where you end up. Now you just get teleported.” He has tried to break out of that venue-tobus cycle by bringing a bike along for the trek, though Orlando’s roadways don’t exactly make that easy. “It sucks that a city so pretty can do the American freeway thing — there are just islands between major points.” There are other ways Brock keeps touring from becoming too routine. Modest Mouse regularly changes its setlist from nightly to give both the band and the people following them something a little less predictable. “Part of me really hoped that we could really ‘Grateful Dead’ this shit,” Brock shares. “For me, it keeps my sanity on tour.” Maybe the irony of touring is that after decades spent traveling from city to city, Brock can still go somewhere without really having been there. That will leave at least one Orlando-area mission for Brock unfinished. On Friday, the band will again find themselves on the other famous Mouse’s stomping grounds, with House of Blues planted in the middle of Disney Springs. But Brock is less concerned with Mickey than he is with finally sipping a butterbeer at Hogwarts. More importantly — almost as if he’s trying to purposely wound us — he called it Disneyland. So until he finally makes it to Universal, Brock can at least enjoy what locals might call Orlando’s closest approximation of a walkable city, even if it was built by a cartoon mouse. music@orlandoweekly.com

[ local music ] But it gets deeper, and darker. “I lost a childhood friend to suicide when we were both around 22 and he also had bipolar I,” she says. “In many ways, Cheap Seats and War are me trying to reconcile why he did it and the loss I’ve felt in my life since then.” As such, these lyrics loom with complex mood. Still, Branch’s innate melodicism musters light even in shadow with effortless Fear of Menesque grace. Among ruminative ballads like “Control”are tall pop sweeps like “The Fishbowl,” “Exoskeleton” and “Peacin Out.” The star of the lot, “Cheap Seats,” is a twinkling guitar-pop gem that splits the lovely difference between twee pop and dream pop. “They feel like a fever dream when I listen back,” says Branch.“It’s been a hard process for me emotionally to work on these songs and a big part of me has always resisted sharing them, but it’s time.” For her, these songs are personal reckonings of complicated life chapters. For us, the two companion EPs are a generous stopgap until Hesitant Waitress’ album materializes. Cheap Seats and War are streaming everywhere.

As Hesitant Waitress, indie chanteuse Emma Branch is building a tantalizing case as one of the best songwriters to emerge from Orlando in a very long time. But the full-length consummation of that promise remains agonizingly elusive. Under construction for about two years running, Hesitant Waitress’s long-gestating debut album, by now, borders on mythical. Yet this is not about that Moby Dick of an album, which still looms somewhere on the horizon. This is, instead, about a pair of new, unexpected Hesitant Waitress releases. Branch dropped two recent EPs — War and Cheap Seats — within about a week of each other. The songs seemingly came from out of the blue but were actually excavated from some deep recesses of her life. Although not necessarily intended for release at first, this unearthed material from several years ago now emerges as a pair of sister EPs. “I honestly never expected any of these songs to see the light of day,” says Branch.“I worked on them initially because I was going through a bad depressive episode and it made me feel better to put my moods into tangible form. Gorillaz: Supergroups are almost never quite the sum of their star parts. Once in a long lucky while, however, along comes a true gestalt, a nuclear fusion that yields something truly great on its own. In the 21st century, few are better examples than multimedia phenoms Gorillaz, the once-in-a-generation alchemy of Blur’s Damon Albarn, celebrity illustrator Jamie Hewlett and a star cast of collaborators. Now, a quarter-century on, Gorillaz still remain one of the most innovative bands in pop history. Their first extensive North American tour in nearly five years launches here in Orlando. The alsogreat openers will be British rap slayer Little Simz and Deltron 3030, the uber-legit supergroup of Dan the Automator, Del the Funky Homosapien and DJ Kid Koala. This is one of the year’s most anticipated arrivals. (6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17, Kia Center, $120.60-) The Commission Beer Chamber Anniversary Block Party: Of all the eras that hip-hop has sired in its half-century of world-changing evolution, none will ever be as illustrious as its New York City origins. Fortunately, Orlando’s blessed with a living temple to that belle époque in the Commission Beer Chamber, a neighborhood bar that pays open tribute to those golden roots and is a clubhouse to the keepers of the flame. To mark six years in culture-keeping business, the Commission is throwing a block party that celebrates its foundational principles: hip-hop and community. Performers include DJ Spree, Throwback Champ, My Good Phelo, DJ Jaymob, Kaotic Blaze, DJ Razor Cut, Sucio Boys and more star cameos. It’ll be a full day of live art, food, vendors and, of course, hip-hop nonstop. Groundhog Day The Musical
Originally a moderately successful black comedy starring Bill Murray in his 1980s marquee-heyday, Groundhog Day has the unfortunate distinction of having an extra bite these days — the fate of a lot of older social satire of late — in its unintentional metaphor for living in America courtesy 2026. Wake up. Scream in agony. Check phone to see (1.) what Trump has done or (2.) what natural disaster is headed our way. Lather, rinse, repeat on a seemingly endless loop. The movie starred Murray as a big(ish) city TV reporter sent to cover the Punxatawny groundhog ceremony. He improbably gets caught in a time loop and … dark hilarity ensues. This musical, with a book by original screenwriter Danny Rubin and music and lyrics by Tim Minchin, has become a hit on Broadway and the West End, even nominated for a Tony along the way. And what it lacks in Murray’s world-weary thousand-yard stare as he stumbles through small-town life in repeat, it makes up for with great songs, impeccable comic timing and a willingness to go even darker(!) than the film. Various times, Alexis & Jim Pugh Theater, Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, 445 S. Magnolia Ave., drphillipscenter.org, $29-$70. — Matthew Moyer FRIDAY, SEPT. 18

One of the great sympatico duos in electronic music history — up their with Soft Cell, Pet Shop Boys and Erasure — was Douglas McCarthy and Bon Harris of Nitzer Ebb. Their creative chemistry was one of total frisson and push/pull, encouraging one another to harsher beats, more over-thetop dancing, louder shouts, more undeniable chants. But now two have become on with McCarthy’s untimely passing a couple years back, but Harris still curries the pop-EBM flame. There is no new music or product to promote, no app or
(thank god) AI venture. This tour is just about celebration of a band who’s catalog of synth-punk anthems are so direct, it’s like a fiber-optic lifeline between your heart and your feet. This is music for dancing, make no mistake. But it’s got an agitpop edge that is perfect for our dystopian times. Sine and Curse Mackey open, and they’re always a good, sinister time. 7 p.m., The Abbey, 100 S. Eola Drive, abbeyorlando.com, $45. — MM SATURDAY, SEPT. 19
Vibrant Things
When an event is named after a Q-Tip solo sizzler, you know you’re in for a good time, and when the extremely well-curated shelves of Uncle Tony’s Donut Shoppe are the setting for said event … so much the better. This weekend’s Vibrant Things gathering invites women who love vinyl to gather at this cozy shop for an afternoon of socializing, crate-digging and jumping behind the shop’s decks to spin the music you love on wax. The event also doubles as a zine release party for the new booklet by Orlando photographer Sasha, “a visual love letter” to the island of Lanzarote off the coast of West Africa and its defiant spirit. Reserving your DJ slot beforehand via Eventbrite is strongly encouraged. 7 p.m., Uncle Tony’s Donut Shoppe, 703 N. Orange Ave., instagram. com/donutshoppe, free. — MM SATURDAY, SEPT. 19
Mural Festival
Downtown Orlando is getting a very vibrant coat of paint this weekend. The Orlando Mural Festival returns for a third year of turning blank walls across our city center into canvases for large-scale local art. This year’s slate of muralists includes Boy Kong, Christian Stanley, Andrew Spear, Delia Miller and Rebekah Unsworth, among many others. The festivities kick off Thursday at CityArts with a Third Thursday reception fea-

Headdress Gala
Dress to impress, and then take it a step further all for a good cause. Saturday’s Headdress Gala is a night celebrating fashion, creativity, performance and community solidarity. With the last Headdress Gala (formerly the Headdress Ball) having taken place nearly a decade ago in 2017, this returning tradition is set to leave the entirety of Central Florida shook. This Gala supports HIV/ STI prevention through Hope & Help, a Floridabased nonprofit providing preventative care, treatment and even holistic primary medical care across Florida. This year’s fête includes a star turn from Motown titan Thelma Houston as the headliner, best known for Grammy-winning disco smash “Don’t Leave Me This Way.” Get ready for an assuredly unique blend of drag, acrobatics, production and high-fashion headwear. 6 p.m., Hilton Orlando, 6001 Destination Parkway, headdressgala.com, $350-$5,000. — Angie Benbeneck TUESDAY, SEPT. 22
Wu-Tang Clean
Every kung-fu saga eventually reaches its final battle, and the Wu-Tang Clan have duly entered the chamber for one last time. More than 30 years after turning Staten Island into their own “Land of Shaolin,” the Clan is taking one last swing with Wu-Tang Forever: The Final Chamber. RZA, the

group’s founding member, once described their sound as a “home-cooked meal of hip-hop,” a recipe built from neighborhood rappers and the martial-arts films that helped shape the group’s mythology and sonics. Alongside RZA were GZA, Method Man, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Inspectah Deck, U-God, Masta Killa and the late Ol’ Dirty Bastard. Their 1993 debut, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), took their symphonic collision of kung-fu cinema and New York hiphop out of Staten Island and all around the world. Now, the final chamber opens at the Kia Center Tuesday. Make sure to “protect ya neck,” we’re not as flexible as we used to be. 7:30 p.m., Kia Center, 400 W. Renaissance Gala
Yes, the Renaissance Theatre Co. is back at its Ivanhoe Village home and yes, they’re firing on all cylinders with blood-soaked productions of Nosferatu and V Bar currently in full swing and an upcoming OTR guest spot from none other than Lydia B. Kollins. But their extended eviction last year has led to a lot of bills that need to be paid. So they’re, naturally, throwing a gala party with some big names: Broadway and TV star Megan Hilty and RuPaul’s Drag Race-winning drag superstar, actress and singer Shea Couleé. “Musical theater icon” (per the Ren’s Donald Rupe) Hilty is well-known to fans of stage and screen. Broadway heads revere her for roles in Wicked, Death Becomes Her, 9 to 5: The Musical, Annie and Noises Off, while the wider pop-culture world has watched her on shows like Patsy and Loretta, Sean Saves the World and plenty of voiceover roles. Besides taking part in a special meet-andgreet, Hilty will perform a 25-minute set of music at the event. Renaissance-themed attire is highly encouraged. 7 p.m., Renaissance Theatre Co., 415 E. Princeton St., rentheater.com, $60-$628. — MM
