Woman claimed her son was permanently injured on Universal’s Stardust Racers

A Georgia woman sued Universal Orlando, claiming her 9-year-old son was permanently injured while riding the Stardust Racers roller coaster last year. She says he sustained his injuries on Oct. 13, 2025 — just about one month after a man died after riding the coaster. Jennifer Lundy argues Universal failed to improve safety measures on the ride after the death of Kevin Rodriguez Zavala, who was fatally injured on Stardust Racers in September 2025. Lundy filed the lawsuit against Universal Orlando for negligence on Aug. 17 in Orange County before it was pushed to federal court the following month. She listed Mack Rides, the ride’s manufacturer, as a co-defendant. Stardust Racers is a dual-launch coaster that reaches speeds up to 62 mph and heights up to 133 feet. It totals 5,000 feet of track inside Epic Universe’s Celestial Park in Orlando. The ride opened in May 2025 and features several inversions. The height requirement is 48 inches. About a month before Lundy said her son was injured, 32-year-old Kissimmee resident Zavala died after riding the coaster on Sept. 17, 2025. The ride closed shortly after the incident. It opened again the following month, and the park released an updated Guide for Safety and Accessibility. It states that Stardust Racers riders who use mobility devices must be able to walk independently.

DeSantis admitted he couldn’t pronounce Hurricane Isaias as the storm approached

bill cited allows certain individuals to request their information not be made public. Gov. Ron DeSantis signed it last year. The bill and its accompanying legislative analysis does not mention the word “president.” One of its authors, Sen. Jason Brodeur, R-Lake Mary, said in an interview that the Legislature forgot to add the U.S. president as one of the elected offices protected under it. “My guess is,” Brodeur said, “it was an accident.”

Florida ranked second in school book removals nationwide

Florida, once the nation’s leader in the movement to rid schools of books that some consider offensive, inappropriate or just too gay, is now trailing the state of Texas in book bans. Florida this year ranked second to Texas in the record-high number of books removed from public schools over the previous year, according to PEN America’s annual book ban report. Over 3,200 books were removed from Florida schools alone, according to the report, while more than 8,000 were removed from Texas schools. Nearly 12,000 books — a record high — were removed from U.S. schools during the 2025-2026 school year nationwide. The so-called “Free State of Florida” has ranked No. 1 for book removals in the U.S. for the last three years in a row, according to PEN America, even as Florida’s literacy rates have declined. Book removals in recent years — advanced by right-wing “parental rights” advocates — have faced scrutiny over the targeting of books highlighting LGBTQ+ and Black voices and books homing in on themes of race, discrimination, mental illness, sexual violence or abuse.

While Florida Gulf residents boarded windows and made necessary preparations for Hurricane Isaias last Friday, Gov. Ron DeSantis — who attended Yale and Harvard — admitted he was struggling to pronounce the Spanish language name. “I don’t know how to pronounce this because it’s not normal,” the governor said in a conference. “I’m calling it Isaiah. You guys can call it what you want. I know that’s not how you pronounce this, it’s something else. But it’s weird.” Isaias, which is the Spanish and Portuguese form of the historically biblical name Isaiah, was chosen off a pre-set rotating list that includes English, Spanish and French names for Atlantic storms. It was selected this year as a Spanish-language entry for the “I” slot after the English-language name Ike was retired after 2008’s catastrophic Hurricane Ike.

Florida removed Trump’s personal information from voter files

Vice President J.D. Vance claimed during a Florida rally last week that it was almost “too easy” to attack the candidacies of the two top Democrats running on the statewide ballot next month, David Jolly for governor and Angie Nixon for U.S. Senate. Speaking during a rally in an airplane hangar at Lakeland Linder International Airport, Vance targeted Nixon by noting the unpopularity of socialism with South Florida Hispanic voters in recent election cycles. He pointed out that Nixon herself is a self-proclaimed socialist, having joined the Democratic Socialists of America this summer. “When Angie Nixon calls herself a socialist, I think the right response is to say, ‘Then get the hell out of here. You don’t belong in America,’” he said to loud cheers from the hundreds in attendance. Nixon responded almost immediately. “I don’t wanna COUCH my words here: I know J.D. Vance, his eyeliner, and Absent Ashley Moody are used to running away from people when things get tough because they care more about themselves and their billionaire buddies than the people they represent. But this is my home,” she said in a written statement. Election officials in Florida removed President Donald Trump’s personal information from public voter registration records, after Trump cited a new state privacy law that does not apply to him. The Palm Beach County Office of the Supervisor of Elections confirmed that it approved Trump’s request earlier this year but never checked the legality of it. The move shields from disclosure Trump’s home and mailing addresses, birth date, party affiliation and email address. The change separately makes it harder to identify when Trump votes by mail versus in person. The president’s request had not been previously reported. Trump signed the request and attested on the notarized document that he was eligible to make his voter information private as a current member of Congress or state public officer under the new law. Chamberlain Harris, a longtime aide who Trump promoted last year to deputy director of Oval Office operations, notarized the form. The orlandoweekly.com ● OCT. 14-20, 2026 ● ORLANDO WEEKLY

CLIMATE CHANGE

A new Florida law could shape Orlando’s Come Out With Pride celebrations in the years to come BY MCKENNA S CH UEL ER

O

rlando’s annual Come Out With Pride festival this weekend is expected to draw thousands of attendees to celebrate LGBTQ+ identities and queer liberation. But a new law (SB 1134) passed by the Florida Legislature this year could shape what Pride festivities look like in the years to come, at least as far as it concerns the city of Orlando’s involvement. Although it’s yet to take effect, event organizers say they’re already seeing a chilling effect. “We’ve seen a drop in parade participation, and we’ve seen a drop definitely of those folks who are elected officials or even candidates,”said Tatiana Quiroga, executive director of Come Out With Pride Orlando. The law, effective Jan. 1, 2027, forbids local governments from funding or promoting any diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, including “activities designed or implemented with reference to race, color, sex, ethnicity, gender identity, or sexual orientation.” Although the law doesn’t ban Pride festivals in Florida outright — or forbid cities from issuing permits for them — it could limit the ability of local government officials, like Orlando’s mayor, to publicly support them or even attend them in their official capacity. “You can attend these events, but you can’t denote that you’re an elected official,” Florida Rep. Anna Eskamani, D-Orlando, told the hosts of a WMNF 88.5-FM Tampa radio program earlier this year. Eskamani, an Orlando native, herself is currently campaigning to become Orlando’s next mayor. “I mean, it’s just so silly and impossible, right?” she asked. “It’s as if, you know, I walk into Pride, and if someone calls me Mayor, I have to duck and hide,” she joked. “I mean, that’s how absurd and obscene the legislation really is.” It also comes with consequences for those who refuse to follow it. Elected officials who violate the law could be subject to a charge of malfeasance, according to a bill summary, which could make them vulnerable to suspension from office. “We can see that it really is designed to have a chilling effect, so that local governments will just self-censor rather than test the bounds of the uncertainty in the law,” said Equality Florida policy director Jon Harris Maurer. Local governments, he confirmed, are already grappling with how to navigate the law’s restrictions, which could extend beyond LGBTQ+ Pride festivities to other arts and cultural events that highlight specific racial or ethnic identities. “It’s critically important that citizens continue to reach out to their local officials and remind them how important it is to continue showing

up for these communities in every way that the law allows it,” he said. As queer Floridians continue to navigate hostile attacks on LGBTQ+ rights and the transgender community, specifically, Quiroga told Orlando Weekly, it’s hard not to see the current political landscape as a step back for the community after years of progress. “We’re almost going back to our roots, to be fully honest with you,” she said. Going back to our roots

Come Out With Pride Orlando dates back more than 20 years to 2005, when Orlando was increasingly being eyed as an up-and-coming progressive city. Just a few years before, in 2002, gay advocates convinced Orlando city leaders to add sexual orientation to its anti-discrimination ordinance — a push motivated in part by Orlando police officers’ discriminatory treatment of gay people. The Orange County Regional History Center a few years later, in 2006, welcomed an exhibit highlighting Orlando’s gay history, coinciding with that year’s Come Out With Pride event. Advocates reportedly scrambled at the time to organize an engaging visualization, according to Orlando Weekly contributor Billy Manes, gathering old ads for the now-shuttered gay club Parliament House, creating a “Wall of Courage” highlighting deceased LGBTQ+ activists, and visualizing the emergence of lesbian social gatherings known as “Moon Parties,” organized with a political angle. “People are desperate for this to happen,” then-Come Out With Pride committee chair Ken Kazmerski told the Weekly. By that time, Orlando reportedly ranked in the top 10 metros nationwide with the biggest LGBTQ population, with nearly 6 percent of locals identifying as gay or bisexual. Today, Orlando is decidedly one of Florida’s most progressive (and gayest) cities. We still have our first openly gay city commissioner, Patty Sheehan, sitting on Orlando City Council. And rainbow pride flags are displayed across the city year-round — posted up at businesses or proudly displayed by the city’s Main Street Districts — in a show of welcoming, love and appreciation of Orlando’s LGBTQ community, as well as remembrance for the 2016 mass shooting at the gay nightclub Pulse that killed 49. Come Out With Pride Orlando, today a 501(c) (3) nonprofit that organizes the city’s annual Pride parade, no longer operates on the shoestring infrastructure it began with. This year, and for several years at this point, the festival has boasted high-profile

corporate sponsors ranging from Amazon to Bank of America, Sysco, Universal Orlando and Walt Disney World. But Come Out With Pride, specifically — unlike the earlier LGBT+ liberation movement that predated it — has always had strong ties to the business community, according to Quiroga, who’s served on the board of the nonprofit since 2020. The annual festival, as it occurs today, emerged from LGBTQ+ business owners organized with the local Pride Chamber of Commerce, who were seeking greater visibility and representation in the region’s economic footprint. “There’s been a very long history of Come Out With Pride being very connected to the business, entrepreneurs, and the economic impact that we have in Central Florida,” Quiroga explained. This is, admittedly, a little more than a stone’s throw — or should we say brick? — from the roots of the more militant, anti-capitalist iteration of the gay rights movement that emerged in the late 1960s and ’70s following the Stonewall riots in New York City. Before Come Out With Pride, some of Orlando’s earliest gay pride parades were organized by Orlando Regional Pride in the early 1990s, attended mostly by locals. Where a Pride parade in 1994 drew about 3,500 people, according to the Florida LGBT Museum, Come Out With Pride these days draws more than 200,000 locals and visitors from across the southeast region annually. “Our event is the largest single-day [Pride] event in Central Florida, and so to me that just speaks volumes of who we are as a community,” Quiroga stated. Her own connection to Come Out With Pride is also very personal. She and her wife have lived in Central Florida for more than 30 years and have two children together, both teenagers. “Attending Pride has always been one of our family traditions,” she said. “It’s really become like any other holiday for us, and so it’s been really interesting to watch the kids experience Pride every year a little bit differently.” A fragile relationship

The city’s relationship with festival organizers has also changed over the years, even since Quiroga first officially got involved in 2020. During the COVID pandemic, festivities were temporarily halted, but by 2021 and 2022, she felt the city was very supportive. “I really felt like, at that point, we had a very strong relationship,” she recalled. “And through the years, now that we’re seeing this sudden climate change, it has definitely dampened.” Under Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who was first elected in 2018, state lawmakers have passed laws targeting bathroom use by transgender people, gender-affirming medical care and the regulation of pronoun use. The state has also implemented state censorship measures in schools — preempting local control — to silence discussion of LGBTQ+ identities and DEI. “This year, I was notified that the city will not be putting up any of the rainbow banners,” Quiroga

admitted, referring to banners she said are typically hung across the city’s downtown core.“It does feel like every year it’s been a little less.” A city spokesperson told Orlando Weekly she couldn’t immediately confirm Quiroga’s account regarding the banners herself, but reaffirmed the city’s support for the event. “For more than two decades, Orlando has proudly welcomed the Come Out With Pride parade, continuing to showcase the city of Orlando as a place that welcomes all and celebrates everyone who makes this community strong,”city spokesperson Ashley Papagni said in a statement. She confirmed the new law will not affect the city’s support for this year’s event, nor will it prevent Come Out With Pride from holding its parade in Orlando moving forward. “Organizers will continue to work with the city to secure the necessary permits and coordinate resources for a successful event for the community,” she said. But direct funding from the city for the event may not materialize as in years past. The city’s Downtown Development Board awarded a $20,000 special events grant this year to Come Out With Pride. In exchange, the city is given sponsorship, which comes with placement in the parade and marketplace. “I’m already anticipating that we will not be receiving that next year,” Quiroga predicted. She may be right. Moving forward, Papagni said the Downtown Development Board has decided to temporarily pause its special event grants program entirely — a move that affects all applicants for the city grant program, not just Come Out With Pride. Acts of resistance

Orlando’s Come Out With Pride festivities, at the very least, aren’t dependent on the city’s financial support. But Quiroga worries its lower profile in the coming years — perhaps beginning with the missing rainbow banners — could send a harrowing message. “We’re going to keep marching on regardless … but now you’re making a clear message to the residents of Central Florida that our flag is too politicized to put up, when at the end of the day, [we] as human beings shouldn’t be politicized,”she said. Maurer, with Equality Florida, pointed out that other Florida cities — Tallahassee and Miami Beach — have already dedicated funding in their 2027 budgets for LGBTQ+ Pride events and programming next year, ahead of the law’s Jan. 1 effective date. The city of Key West also dedicated $25,000 in funding for a LGBTQ+ art installation. “Our local governments are trying to get out ahead of the uncertainty and the restrictions of the law,” he said. “We are always going to be here as an organization, regardless of what the waves and the storm are going to look like,” said Quiroga. “But the spirit of Pride is to celebrate who we are, to come together as a community, and to also stand up for our representation and visibility. So we’re going to always make sure that we do that.” mschueler@orlandoweekly.com

South accounted for 51 percent. Sexual contact between men accounted for 65 percent; among men older than 24 in that category, Hispanic and Latino men represented the largest share, at 40 percent. PrEP reduces the risk of acquiring HIV through sex by about 99 percent when taken as prescribed. Treatment makes U=U possible: Undetectable equals Untransmittable. A person taking HIV treatment who maintains an undetectable viral load has zero risk of sexually transmitting HIV. For Aguilar, U=U means science and dignity. Turning these advances into everyday care requires trust, clear information and practical support.

Care rooted in community

AS HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH CLOSES, HIV IS NOT OVER José Aguilar’s journey from Venezuela to

building “Care that feels like home” in Central Florida reminds us that celebrating Latino heritage also means protecting Latino health. October 15 closes Hispanic Heritage Month and marks National Latinx AIDS Awareness Day. For Orlando, where Latino culture and LGBTQ+ life help shape the city, celebrating our communities also means protecting their health. For José Aguilar, that connection is personal. Diagnosed with HIV in Venezuela more than a decade ago, Aguilar later immigrated to the

United States. His experience as a gay Latino man living with HIV shaped his advocacy and AGUILAR SALUD, the bilingual nonprofit he founded in Central Florida. He understood that a prescription is only part of healthcare. People also need affordable appointments, transportation and someone who understands their language and experience. That understanding became “Care that feels like home” and “Care that starts at zero,” with eligible services and assistance beginning at zero cost, based on program requirements and available resources.

The science exists. Access must follow.

CDC data recorded 38,793 HIV diagnoses in 2024 across the United States and seven territories and freely associated states. The

AGUILAR SALUD’s early work began in a converted church sacristy in Azalea Park. Today, it is working toward its third location and provides telehealth across Florida. Its programs reflect the people it serves. QUIÉRETE CHICA centers women. PAPI serves the LGBTQ+ community. SERENDIPIA creates space for seniors. Háztela Conmigo encourages HIV testing, while Indetectable = Intransmisible brings U=U education to Spanish speaking audiences. La Cena, PAPI Weekend, PAPI’s Drag Brunch and PAPI’s Support Group build connection and belonging. Sometimes a conversation becomes someone’s first step toward care. Services include HIV treatment, PrEP, DoxyPEP for eligible patients, STI testing and treatment, primary care, laboratory services and medication support. Transportation, case management, food and clothing assistance, mental health connections and an Insurance Subsidy Program help address everyday barriers.

Leadership worthy of the mission

For Aguilar, a complex HIV funding landscape makes sustaining this work especially demanding. Limited resources require difficult choices, dependable partnerships and a clear commitment to patients. Being small makes every contribution consequential. It also keeps AGUILAR SALUD close to the community, able to listen and respond directly. Aguilar sees its continued work as evidence of what people can accomplish when they support one another. Supporting grassroots organizations preserves that responsiveness. Larger institutions have a role, while community organizations bring relationships and lived experience that deserve investment. Representation also requires substance. Latino people, LGBTQ+ people and people living with HIV deserve authority in decisions made in their names. Their experiences deserve respect beyond their usefulness in a fundraising appeal. Leadership earns trust when resources and relationships serve the mission and benefit the people represented.

Opening doors, sharing recognition

Queer businesses have a proud history of supporting HIV advocacy. Honoring that legacy means recognizing the difference between promotional space and a community health service. When bars and queer venues require grassroots organizations to purchase “sponsorships” simply to provide testing or prevention education, they place a price on access. Every dollar spent gaining entry reduces resources available for care. Such requirements reveal a troubling gap

between the language of community support and its practice. Businesses benefiting from LGBTQ+ loyalty can demonstrate that loyalty in return: welcome qualified health organizations, offer space and make community wellbeing part of doing business. Aguilar thanks Sawmill Camping Resort, SAVOY Orlando, Walgreens, Hope Community Center and other partners for opening those doors. He also recognizes his team and Board of Directors, whose community ties and lived experience guide the work. His advocacy extends to Guatemala through engagement with LGBTQ+, HIV affected and Indigenous communities. In September, AGUILAR SALUD presented its PAPI model at the United States Conference on HIV/AIDS in Anaheim, California. Earlier this year, Aguilar’s leadership and contributions to community health were formally recognized in the Congressional Record of the United States. The recognition carries his name. The achievement belongs to the commUNITY behind the work. This October 15, get tested. Ask about PrEP. Learn about U=U. Support a grassroots organization. Help someone find care they trust.

Celebremos nuestra cultura cuidando nuestra salud. Merecemos atención con respeto, confianza y dignidad. Celebrate our history. Honor our commUNITY. Protect our health. Follow @JoseAguilarSalud and @ aguilarsaludinc on instagram. AGUILAR SALUD INC. (689) 240-4646 www.aguilarsalud.com

COME OUT WITH PRIDE 2025 (PHOTO BY AZLYN CATO)

RAINBOW WORLD

Our rundown of all the parties and gatherings — and parades — at Come Out With Pride weekend BY ANGIE BENBENECK

A

re you ready to “Feel the Beat” at this weekend’s Come Out With Pride in Orlando? We’ve got you covered with a rundown of the official events and related shindigs to maximize your celebration.

are multiple rooms with DJs, dancers and drag shows throughout the weekend, making it another option for anyone looking to keep the festivities going into the night before the big party begins (and after it ends)!

Pre-Game:

The Big Day:

Leading up to the big day, on Oct. 16 there are plenty of prelude activities to get into the spirit before Saturday. Downtown nightclub Anthem hosts Arrebato, a Pride kickoff party featuring resident DJ Nani Soul from 8 to 10 p.m., followed by DJs Jerac and Leo Blanco playing Latin beats until 2:30 a.m. Southern Nights on Bumby in the Milk District will host their own Pride Kick-Off Party at 9:30 p.m. with the top-tier drag lineup of Darcel Stevens, Sassy Devine, Tashae Royale Sherrington, Cara Cavalli and Roxxxy Andrews (ahead of her turn on the Eola stage Saturday), along with DJs and dancing to spare. And over at Savoy in Ivanhoe Village, there

Orlando’s Come Out With Pride celebration returns in earnest Saturday, Oct. 17, with a full day of parades, parties, performances and community downtown and in Lake Eola Park. The weekend offers plenty to enjoy before the parade even starts marching. Things kick off at noon at Lake Eola Park when the Come Out With Pride festival officially takes over downtown. The festival runs until 10 p.m., featuring two main entertainment areas: the Diva Stage and Sonic Bloom Field. Both feature a plethora of performers, plus food, drinks, vendors, community organizations and plenty of diversions before the parade. Notable performers include Roxxxy Andrews, the Orlando Gay

Chorus, Ginger Minj, Detox, Les Vixens, Darcel Stevens and Angelica Sanchez, Sasha Colby, Kirk DaVinci and Myki Meeks. DJs including Nani Soul, Blue Star, Mr. Meow Meow and Kim Anh will soundtrack the festivities as well. At 1 p.m., make sure to catch the Trans Rally, a gathering that puts our local trans and nonbinary communities front and center, bringing participants together for visibility, solidarity and celebration. This year’s Come Out With Pride features the debut of Culture Club, a “space designed to uplift, empower, and create meaningful space for the QTBIPOC community” featuring music, arts, food and culture. When the clock strikes 4 p.m., Orlando’s Most Colorful Parade takes over downtown starting at the intersection of Washington Street and Orange Avenue. More than 250 organizations and businesses are expected to participate, making their way through the streets of downtown. The parade runs from 4-6 p.m. and is free to watch. All are encouraged to dress in their most colorful and fabulous Pride attire. VIP and ADA viewing areas are available on Rosalind Avenue. Once the parade disperses, head back toward Lake Eola for even more festivities. The event continues into the evening with DJs, drag, music and dancing. The festival runs until 10 p.m., so there’s plenty of time to grab another drink or two, wander the vendor market or find a spot around the lake before the fireworks finale. At 9:30 p.m., it’s

officially time to look up and see the fireworks show! And even though that’s the “official” finale, the party isn’t nearly finished. The Afters:

For those who want to go directly from the festival into full-blown late-night revelry, the Official Pride Afterparty, hosted by One Magical Weekend, takes over Anthem. The party goes until a doubtless bleary 2:30 a.m. Outside the club, there will be an alfresco setup offering performances, food vendors and more room to party after the party. Savoy is also going big on Saturday with its Pride Weekend party. Expect dancers, drag shows and DJs through the night, with the enticement of free parking. Savoy is offering a Pride shuttle to and from Lake Eola for $5 from 2-8 p.m. The Saturday programming continues late into the night, with Jeremy Haney taking over the DJ booth at 10 p.m. and a drag show hosted by the always-entertaining Annie Daynow earlier at 9:30 p.m. Southern Nights keeps it going with a Pride Party at 8 p.m. featuring performances from Les Vixens, Sassy Devine, Maya Andrews, the ubiquitous Roxxxy Andrews and many, many more. On Sunday, Oct. 18, parties continue to varying degrees at Come Out With Pride venue Anthem, Southern Nights and Savoy. But if you want a nap (or three), you’ve more than earned it. Happy Come Out With Pride, everyone.

DIAMOND LIFE It’s been a long time coming, and Roxxxy Andrews is ready for a solo headlining performance at Come Out With Pride BY E D UA R D O G OM E Z

O

rlando drag royalty Roxxxy Andrews celebrated her birthday recently under the lights of Southern Nights, the nightclub she’s called home for more than a decade. Now, the RuPaul’s Drag Race breakout star is preparing for another hometown celebration, this time with her first solo headlining performance at Orlando’s Come Out With Pride on the Divas Stage in Lake Eola Park Saturday, Oct. 17, at 7:55 p.m. Andrews joins a star-studded lineup on that stage, including fellow Drag Race alumni Ginger Minj, Detox, Sasha Colby and Season 18 winner Myki Meeks. Held annually around National Coming Out Day, Come Out With Pride has grown into one of the Southeast’s largest LGBTQ+ celebrations, with more than 230,000 attendees last year. This year’s festival, themed “Feel the Beat,” takes over Lake Eola Park with drag performances, music and the Most Colorful Parade in downtown Orlando, before closing with fireworks over the lake. “I’m super excited to have my first headline spot over here,” Andrews tells Orlando Weekly. Pride for Andrews has historically meant a packed weekend performance schedule rather than a day spent enjoying the festivities herself. Between appearances on the Pulse float and commitments at local nightclubs, she’s rarely had the opportunity to experience the celebration without being painted and on the clock. “I worked at Pulse for over 10 years and was always on the Pulse float, and then I went from Pulse to Southern, and I’ve been there for over 10 years,” she remembers. Having spent much of her career performing in Orlando, Andrews has witnessed considerable changes in the city’s LGBTQ+ community, particularly in its nightlife scene. Andrews recalls a time when performers were scattered across far-flung venues

like Parliament House, Pulse and Southern Nights, often working separate stages without regularly crossing paths. Today, she sees a smaller nightlife landscape but a more close-knit community. “I feel like we’re not spread out as much, and we see each other more often because there aren’t as many places to go,” she says. “I feel like the community has grown closer.” She also extends her point about connection to the next generation of Orlando drag. Sharing this year’s Pride lineup with Andrews is Myki Meeks, the city’s newest Drag Race champion, who has previously credited Andrews as one of her mentors at Southern Nights. It’s a fitting pairing for someone who’s watched drag evolve from handmade costumes and local pageants into an increasingly polished, social media-driven industry. “Back in the day, you had to go to JoAnn’s, get a sewing machine and figure out how to make it yourself,” Andrews recalls. For many, gone are the days when re-creating a celebrity’s look meant a mandatory trip to the fabric store and a few crafty friends. Now, queens are often resplendent in commissioned outfits from the very designers behind those celebrity looks — though that level of glamour can come with a hefty price tag. “I feel like the caliber of drag has gone up,” Andrews says, crediting the resources available to newer performers while lamenting that some degree of the DIY creativity that once defined drag is getting lost in the process. But even with a career that’s taken her far beyond Central Florida, Orlando is still special. “I always love to be able to be home and celebrate Pride here, which doesn’t happen too often,” she says. Pay tribute to our actual Orlando royals this Saturday afternoon and evening at the Divas Stage at Lake Eola Park.

LOUD AND PROUD Queer-led punk band The Pheromones to join Rep. Maxwell Frost at Come Out With Pride BY PAIGE BRIGH T

A

long with high energy and good vibes, one of the key elements of Orlando Rep. Maxwell Frost’s Come Out With Pride float is a live band. The Pheromones, an all-queer, woman-led Orlando band are stepping up to the mic for this year’s float at the Come Out With Pride parade on Oct. 17 downtown. The Pheromones — consisting of members Skip, Nic, Madi and Joanna — began while the members were students at UCF in 2022, playing parking garage shows for passersby. Now the band frequents venues like Conduit, Will’s Pub and The Abbey, but they’re getting back to their roots by getting on a flatbed truck. “We played a festival with Maxwell Frost in

December called MadSoul, and I feel like after that we developed a relationship with him. He’s been coming to our shows and stuff, which is really awesome,” Skip, bassist and backing vocalist, tells Orlando Weekly. “Every single year, he has a band on his float with him, and so this year, he reached out to us, and he asked if we were interested in that. I was like, ‘Of course we’re interested.’” Madi had walked with Frost’s float a couple of years prior, so getting the upgrade from walking to performing was an exciting prospect. “I had walked two other years with him and his crew, but now I’m in the band on the float; that’s so cool.”

THE PHEROMONES (COURTESY PHOTO)

The band plans on performing a three-song repeating set with a surprise centerpiece for fans along the parade route: an unreleased song. “We’re playing three songs on loop so that everyone gets to see a similar set. One of our songs is called ‘Push Back,’ which hasn’t been released yet. It’s kind of a protest anthem,” Skip says. “I think that sharing this kind of message with this audience will be well-received. We just want to support the people, and we feel glad that the people want to support us.” “It feels fitting because Pride is a protest; it started as a protest, so the whole message of our song is to not let people [in power] win,” Madi adds.“To push back from social norms, push back against all of the evil going on, so I feel like it’s a very fitting song to be playing right now.” The performance will be extra special, as Frost (a percussionist himself) will be joining the band a couple of times throughout the parade on the drums. “I’ve never played with him, so I’m really excited,” Madi says. “I’ve seen lots of gigs he’s played. I think it’s really fun that he’s in the music scene separately from politics as well.”

For the band, it’s not just about performing with Frost, although that’s an incredible experience; it’s about being in the community and connecting with fans and Orlandoans at large. “This gig kind of reminds me of playing at the UCF parking garages. We would always see cars drive by, people wave, or anyone just walking at UCF, so it kind of reminds me of that,” Nic says. “Ever since the beginning, I’ve always wanted to do something like this, be a part of a Pride parade or a parade in general, but obviously Pride is even better.” Joanna put her excitement into just a simple phrase: “It’s cool.” Those looking to join in on the fun can RSVP to march with Team Frost from 2 p.m.-5:30 p.m. at the Team Frost Mobilize Event Page. The exact route of the parade, a private event, was not yet available at press time, but those who RSVP will be given the details. “As a band that really embraces counterculture, we’re really proud to be able to represent people this way through music,” Skip says. “Through women-made music, as well as through queermade music.”

MOVEMENT LGBTQ+ nightspot Anthem Orlando begins Year Two at Come Out With Pride, complete with a roster of international DJs BY MATTH EW MOYE R

“W

e opened at 7 p.m. and we were still under construction. Literally as people were coming in the front door. I’ll never forget, Anna Eskamani was one of the first people to walk in, and she’s like, ‘Mike, this place is beautiful.’ I was like,‘Thank you so much. Feel free to grab a drink at the bar, but please wait a little while for the restrooms to be completed.’” Michael Vacirca, co-owner of Anthem, is reminiscing with Orlando Weekly about the challenges of opening his LGBTQ+ nightspot on the Friday next of a very bustling Come Out With Pride weekend last year. For him, it was an important gesture to open during the Pride event, to “have that connection built into the space.” Now, one year later, the nightclub is firmly

ensconced downtown and in the broader world of Orlando nightlife, with a busy slate of worldfamous DJs ready to move bodies amidst Come Out With Pride festivities this weekend. Pride festivities kick off at the now 1-year-old Anthem on Thursday with a special edition of their weekly Latin night with DJ Jerry and the House of San Miguel performing drag. Friday night (the weekday of their opening) features the Arrebato party starting in the afternoon, and as evening falls DJ Jerac from Colombia and Leo Blanco from Spain will be playing back-to-back all night, with an opening set from Nani Soul. “Expect a lot of surprises. Expect a lot of really cool entertainment and decor,” teases Vacirca. On Saturday, the Most Colorful Parade actually begins at Anthem — the official host venue for Come Out With Pride — at the corner of

A NIGHT OUT AT ANTHEM (COURTESY PHOTO)

Washington Street and Orange Avenue. Even before the parade starts, Anthem opens their doors to revelers at noon for a free party happening both inside and outside. At around 8 p.m., things kick off in earnest with a ticketed party featuring DJ Dani Brasil spinning indoors. At 11 p.m., Brasil heads outdoors to spin in the parking lot and DJ Nitro from Colombia takes over inside, with festivities going into the wee hours. And yes, the floor keeps moving on Sunday with the Afterglow party starting in the daytime and stretching far into the night featuring sets from DJs Erik Vilar from Brazil, Matty Anderson and Erik Armiliato from Brazil. “I’m always thrilled to be part of Pride celebrations around the world! Whenever I perform during such a special and meaningful weekend, I make sure my set is filled with tracks that truly capture the spirit of Pride — celebrating love, freedom and self-expression,” Vilar, whose Anthem sets will be his Orlando debut, tells Orlando Weekly. “It’s incredibly meaningful to me. This weekend holds such a deep purpose, and music is my way of expressing that.” Even one year later, Vacirca vividly remembers feeling the initial sense of mission in opening Anthem on Orange Avenue, “putting us as a community back in a downtown space.” “We’re part of Orlando, and we’re not backing down and we’re not going away,” he adds. “The previous generation has done an excellent job

of getting us the rights that we have today, to the point that we are today. And it’s now up to us as the next generation to make sure that we keep that, and we don’t lose that, and we don’t let people take that back from us. So having a space downtown really is important as a symbol, to say we are here.” Even the name of the club — Anthem — is intentional as “a rallying cry,” says Vacirca. “This should be a rallying place for our community to come together and to celebrate and enjoy each other, but also to be here for the highs, the lows and everything in between.” For a new venue, Anthem has distinguished itself quickly as a friendly hosting space for not only advocacy and political engagement — Eskamani held a campaign event with drag artist and activist Darcel Stevens over the summer — but also a calendar that, aside from big-name bookings, is going the extra mile in platforming young and adventurous local talent who perhaps otherwise you wouldn’t see on a downtown stage. We’re thinking particularly of the recurring alternative drag-king-forward showcase Dragged From the Grave on Mondays, and the monthly show curated by trans force-of-nature and “Fashion Polka Queen of Drag” Adi Love, dubbed Adi’s Love Fest. “The crux of what we’re doing here is giving that next generation the opportunity to perform here while also providing a safe space,” says Vacirca, “and a place for them to connect with other people in the community who may have a little bit more experience that could help guide them and teach them how to grow as an artist.” “If you have an idea, bring it to us,” he adds about encouraging new performers. “We want everyone to feel that this venue is for them, and that it reflects who they are within these walls.” And speaking of new faces, Anthem is actively platforming international DJs — many of whom are on the Come Out With Pride lineups we mentioned a few paragraphs back. “We want to really give Orlando a showcase of different talent that’s available within the LGBTQ+ scene, and show them all sorts of DJs, both local as well as international, and bring them to the city so people here can enjoy music from everywhere,” says Vacirca. “On the dancefloor, all differences fade away and everyone connects on the exact same frequency,” says Vilar of music’s power to unify. “Bringing international artists to a venue like Anthem shows that music can still bridge cultures and unite people, no matter how divided the world gets.” Vacirca, while looking forward to what’s on the horizon, still finds himself reminiscing about Anthem’s opening — and the emotions are still there. “Seeing people come together and be joyful for the first time in a very long time in a space downtown, right during the parade. It took my breath away,” Vacirca says. “Being able to offer that, and now knowing that we’ve offered that every single day for an entire year, I can’t wish for anything more.”

From cleverly cockeyed humor to truly terrifying immersion, these three haunts are for spookyseason thrill-seekers looking for something different Have you already exhausted this

year’s Halloween events at Orlando’s major theme parks? Are still searching for more scares before spooky season ends? Check out these three Central Florida haunts that manage to be more imaginative, immersive and downright intense than any of their bigger-budgeted corporate competitors. Gators, Ghosts & Goblins at Gatorland

Gatorland’s daytime Halloween celebration, which is marking its eighth year under creative director Dan “Cyrus the Gravedigger”Carro, continues to occupy a unique sweet spot among area events by being less child-centric than Legoland’s Brick-or-Treat or SeaWorld’s Spooktacular, while avoiding the violence and viscera of Halloween Horror Nights or Howl-O-Scream. Featuring both beloved returning attractions like the Cryptid Express train ride, as well as new oddball entertainment — don’t miss the lederhosen-clad Frank N’ Stein’s Monster crooning Cranberries songs in the Oktoberfest pavilion — Gatorland’s event is arguably the best value among Orlando’s theme parks, considering that it’s included in the half-price admission offered to area residents. This year’s edition of Swamp Ghost’s Museum, the headlining haunted walk-through, brings to life the literary legacy of author Bram Stoker with both facts and frights. An actor-driven experience harking back to Carro’s days at Terror on Church Street, the tour begins with an educational explanation of the origins of Stoker’s stories, before transitioning into a spooky stroll through scenes from three of his terrifying tales: Lair of the White Worm, Jewel of the Seven Stars, and some obscure epistolary novel about Nosferatu. Carro and crew’s cleverly cockeyed sense of humor is in full effect, from the AI-parodying

GATORS, GHOSTS & GOBLINS (PHOTO BY SETH KUBERSKY)

living portrait in the first scene to the talking animated figures (and even more animated performers) found further along. I’m impressed as always by the detailed scenery and sophisticated effects they’ve managed to squeeze into such a modest space, and even fraidy-cats should manage to survive the sparse (but effective) jump scares. Consider Gators, Ghosts & Goblins a mustdo if you’re a fan of Francis Ford Coppola’s film version of Dracula — not to mention capybaras, chupacabras, crocodiles or any of the critters that call Gatorland home. (gatorland.com) Ominous Descent

Once again, I made the hour-plus trek to the Winter Haven Moose Lodge for Ominous Descent; and once again I return to proclaim this exemplar of independent haunts to be well worth the haul for hardcore horror fans. Each year, the storyline evolves — now centering on an abused psychic unleashing vengeance on her torturers — and subtle tweaks are made to the partially outdoors layout, which traverses an authentically decrepit lake house and the foggy laser-lit swamp that surrounds it. Although it hasn’t seen a complete overhaul since opening in its current location, owner-operator Eric Dodson and his team have maintained their reputation as the area’s scariest independent haunted house by continuing to uphold certain fundamentals: Pulsed into the house in small groups, guests get to endure a maze that’s much longer than any theme park attraction and staffed with far more aggressive scare actors, who will either plead hauntingly for your help or relentlessly hunt you through the hallways. It isn’t for the faint of heart (or those watching the gas budget), but Ominous Descent still generates a genuine sense of isolated insecurity that no licensed intellectual property can offer. (ominousdescent.com) A Petrified Forest

Having grown over the decades from a

community trail into a complete “scare park,” A Petrified Forest in Altamonte Springs now boasts three well-themed trails, zombie laser tag and a unique “escape ride” aboard an openair truck (which was not operating on the night of my media visit). Among this year’s haunted paths, the clear standout is Drawn to Death, a vibrantly vicious reinvention of beloved childhood characters; I especially appreciated the waterlogged Sweethaven with a high-flying Olive Oyl, the Scooby-Doo hallway full of doors, and the Donkey Kong barrel gag at the finale. The other two paths depict cannibalism through the ages, and a FEMA-led apocalyptic rescue scenario. However, it’s the Forest’s final offering — an extra-charge immersive experience called Psychosis — that proves most potent and potentially problematic. After an initial interrogation by an intrusive psychotherapist, participants are closed inside a wooden closet that is pushed along a track, emerging into a maze populated by grotesque Oedipal archetypes that grab your arms and ankles while growling personal insults at you. Having only skimmed the mandatory waiver, I was expecting the performers to touch me, but I wasn’t fully prepared for one to drag me into an concealed corner, hover their shrieking face millimeters from mine, and snip off a lock of my hair; others in my group emerged smeared in makeup or similarly marked. While it isn’t as abusive as the notorious McKamey Manor, Psychosis pushes the frontier of physical frights further than anything I’ve encountered in Orlando since Pseudonym Productions’ A Study of Dreams (which made me strip to my underwear for a coed shower). If that kind of boundary-breaking floats your boat, this therapy session is well worth spending the extra $18. Just be sure to watch the weather forecast when you plan to visit, because the most frightening thing to happen at A Petrified Forest is rain washing out its wooded walkways. A HALLOWEEN NIGHT OF MAGIC, MYSTERY AND MIND-BENDING ILLUSIONS

I

nside Orlando’s intimate Magic Show: Unboxed, where world-class illusion, live music, and genuine connection turn an evening at Grande Lakes into a memory worth making. Looking for a Halloween experience that goes beyond haunted houses and costume parties? This October, The Magic Show: Halloween Party Edition is bringing an evening of illusions, comedy, music and mind-reading to Grande Lakes Orlando. Presented by America’s Got Talent finalist Drew Thomas, the intimate production takes place at Citron inside the JW Marriott Orlando, Grande Lakes. Guests can step into a theatrical world where the impossible happens just feet away — and sometimes with members of the audience at the center of the action. Designed for fewer than 100 guests, the show combines large-scale illusions with close-up magic, interactive mind

reading, storytelling and plenty of humor. The intimate setting means there’s no hiding in the back row; audience members become part of the experience as Drew brings volunteers onstage for unexpected predictions, hilarious interactions and illusions designed to leave even skeptics wondering how it was done. The Halloween Party Edition also brings a full cast and musical element to the evening. Drew performs alongside his wife, Rebecca, who participates in some of the show’s most memorable illusions. Their son Sam joins the production on guitar, while Milo provides live piano accompaniment and Kayla and Kellie add live vocals to create an experience that feels as much like a theatrical performance as a traditional magic show. The result is an evening that blends the spectacle of a large-scale magic production with the feeling of a private

KID A

Foreign Dissent brings Japanese ska-punk band Age of Kid, among many others, to play Orlando BY IDA V. ES KAMAN I

“T

ouring overseas always reminds us that music has no borders.” Age of Kid, a three-piece ska punk band from Tokyo, is preparing for another transnational tour. Their destination? Gainesville, Florida. You see, once a year, this college town becomes ground zero for punk worldwide. For a quarter of a century, every October, punks from all over have made the annual pilgrimage to Gainesville for Fest, the DIY music festival featuring hundreds of punk bands as well as comedy showcases and even wrestlers

now too. And for over a decade, here in Orlando international punk bands on their way to Fest make a stop in the City Beautiful for Foreign Dissent, Orlando’s all-international punk music showcase. Happening Monday, Oct. 19, at Will’s Pub, this year’s lineup is stacked, with bands from Japan, Costa Rica, Austria and England taking the stage. Japan’s Age of Kid, featuring Taichi on vocals and bass, Norio on drums and Yoda on guitar, are eager to bring their latest record, 20 Years, to an Orlando stage.

The album is aptly named; though the band has experienced many incarnations and a hiatus, this year marks their 20th. “In the beginning, Age of Kid was a pretty straightforward melodic hardcore band. When we restarted, we stopped worrying about genre completely, and that’s when the style we have today really started to develop,” the band shares collectively. Age of Kid today is self-assured in their eclectic sound and vision, blending ska, punk, reggae and rock, among other influences.“The three of us just play whatever sound feels right to us at that moment. So don’t be surprised when you listen to our records!” they explain with a laugh. “With this album, we cared even less about genre than we did before. More than anything, we focused on what we wanted to play and what we wanted to say.” This combination lends itself to a unique sound, though their live performances are peak punk house-show style with just the right amount of skanking. Over the years, Foreign Dissent has created a global community, with artists and fans alike gaining friends around the globe. Age of Kid says their U.S. tour was “made possible with the support of so many friends from around the world

whom we met on our previous tour. We can’t thank them enough. The way we want to repay them is by giving everything we have on stage.” It’s a community the band relishes.“We’re not fluent in English. But inside a live house, that doesn’t really matter. So if you enjoy our set, please come talk to us afterward and tell us how you felt,” they implore. “Directly, in whatever way you can.” It’s transnational goodwill that trades both ways: “If anyone reading this ever gets the chance to visit Japan, please go check out a Japanese live house. There are so many incredible bands in Japan that can stand alongside great bands from anywhere in the world. We hope to see you in Japan someday.” music@orlandoweekly.com

Music scenes are ecosystems. And as in nature, one of the best and healthiest things that happens in a scene is cross-pollination. The latest, and greatest, homegrown crop sprouts from some of our deepest, most colorful soil. Snotnoze Saleem, whose name should ring familiar to regular TLU readers, is one of the more exciting and urgent rappers to emerge from the 407 in recent years. Sharp is a noteworthy Space Coast producer who’s collaborated with artists like jazz-soul songbird Kristen Warren. Their paths crossed in Orlando in 2023 when they both played the 10th anniversary festival for Illuminated Paths, arguably the area’s most wonderfully weird music label and mini-scene. “At the time they had yet to meet and really loved each other’s performances at the fest,” says Illuminated Paths label boss Joshua Rogers.“They decided then and there to get together and create an album inspired by and exclusive to IP.” From that historic event, Snotnoze Saleem and Sharp made new history of their own by teaming up to become Resident Strangers. Now, three years later, that auspicious alt-rap alliance has finally delivered its promise in the form of a new 13-track eponymous album. On it Snotnoze Saleem, unsurprisingly, delivers the tense, dense rap electricity that instantly seared him into the local consciousness several years ago. Sharp, whose production style usually leans dreamy and atmospheric, has decided instead to flex hard here and go ride-or-die with Saleem’s signature storm. To that end, he gets down dirty and pushes the sonics into the blaring red, dredging the gutter for grimy thrills. The payoff is custom-fitted sound design that’s the thunder to Saleem’s lightning. At its best and most intense, it results in fevered, mental bangers like “Basket of Deplorables.”

Resident Strangers, the ongoing alt-rap alliance of rapper Snotnoze Saleem and producer Sharp, has delivered its promise with a new eponymous album. The payoff is custom-fitted sound design that’s like grimy thunder to Saleem’s lyrical lightning

Once all the breathless dust settles, what remains is the telltale carnage that only a lethal crew can wreak. With this album, Resident Strangers land as a new Florida force of experimental hip-hop that’s not just on, but thoroughly of, Illuminated Paths. Resident Strangers is available through IP on cassette or digitally via Bandcamp.

CONCERT PICKS THIS WEEK

Portrayal of Guilt, Helvetica: Few acts in the heavy underground right now are as convincingly experimental as Austin’s Portrayal of Guilt. Unbound by traditional genre boxes, they’ve built a name by mining the primordial murk where all hues of heavy music bleed together and striking gold. Hardcore, black

metal, screamo, industrial, nu-metal, trip-hop, whatever — it’s all in play and comes out sounding fresh, daring and savage in POG’s hands. This is the kind of thrill you get when hard and heavy collide beyond tribal lines under the command of new progressive maestros. Opening are Helvetica, a new Orlando band featuring members of Concealer and Flowers for Emily. (11 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16, Will’s Pub, $15)

Ghost Peppers: You’ve heard me glow about Orlando’s Ghost Peppers, the UCF English professors who’ve gone from educators to band to cultural ambassadors. This weekend, you can see them live. Since my last coverage of them early this year, they’ve garnered some nice international press for their cross-cultural music that not only bridges South Asian and Americana traditions but also carries messages of unity in pluralism. See them up close and personal at the unique backyard series of the Fallout Sessions. Bring a chair or blanket. (6:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, Fallout Sessions, donations accepted) Great Lake Swimmers: Of the great, fertile wave of early 2000s indie folk that brought artists like Iron & Wine, Sufjan Stevens and Cass McCombs, Canada’s Great Lake Swimmers are one of the era’s best, most underrated acts. Then, in the 2010s, folk went pop, got unreasonably cute and everything went to hell. But not Great Lake Swimmers. They’ve stayed their course and have continued to make spacious folk music of beauty and atmosphere for nearly a quarter-century. So put down the Mumford, son, and come see the quiet majesty of Great Lake Swimmers in one of their rare appearances here. (8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, Tuffy’s Music Box, $22) music@orlandoweekly.com

Jane Don’t

RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 18 breakout star Jane Don’t is coming to Orlando, but not for a glamorous headliner at Savoy or Southern Nights. No, she’s headed to … Funny Bone? Believe it. Don’t — whose legit comedy chops have been praised by SNL’s resident oddball Sarah Sherman — is steering her sublimely named “Jane Does America” tour through comedy clubs all over the country. “My drag is informed by comedy, glamour, and subculture,” said Don’t to the Seattle Stranger. “I’m very inspired by vintage comedians and funny women.” The top-tier comedy queen knows her gags while simultaneously and effortlessly inducing them. 7 p.m., Funny Bone Comedy Club, 9101 International Drive, orlando.funnybone.com, $37-$84. — Matthew Moyer THURSDAY, OCT. 15

Knocked Loose

When hardcore ragers Knocked Loose dropped “Hive Mind” with rapper Denzel Curry back in February, fans immediately started clamoring for these two to go on the road together. Built on punishing guitar chugs, barked vocals and Curry’s rapid-fire lyrical attack, the track feels like both artists are meeting at their most aggressive. Well, those wishes have been granted: The Kentucky wrecking crew and the South Florida MC have turned their one-off collaboration into the Hive Mind Tour, coming to the Orlando Amphitheater on Oct. 16. And despite what the billing might suggest, this isn’t some random genre mashup engineered for shock value. Curry has spent years pulling from punk and metal’s aggression in his performances, while Knocked Loose didn’t soften a thing to make this tour work. Fans at earlier stops have reported near-continuous pits, crowd surfers and plenty of chaos from both sets. Superheaven and Boundaries round out the bill and make this one of those nights where standing safely in the back suddenly starts sounding like a reasonable plan. 6 p.m., Orlando Amphitheater, 4603 W. Snail Mail & Soccer Mommy

Indie-rock favorites Soccer Mommy and Snail Mail are going from playing house shows to teaming up on their big co-headlining S&M Tour, bringing their dreamy guitars and emotionally charged music to Orlando. Led by Sophie Allison (Soccer Mommy) and Lindsey Jordan (Snail Mail), the longtime friends announced their tour earlier this year with an endearing addendum from Jordan: “Finally going on tour with my best buddy.” Both bands have built up sizable fan bases with tuneful tales of heartbreak, growing up and self-discovery, turning them into intimate yet powerful indie

WEEK rock. With Soccer Mommy recently releasing “Rings of Saturn” and Snail Mail touring behind her latest album, Ricochet, there’s plenty of new music to go around. Create for Our Communities, Now!

Spinning out of the recently opened Ephemera Eternal exhibition at Framework that spotlights the work of photographer Adam Goldman and creative polymath Glenn Richey comes this “computational zine” workshop from the latter. Richey, a Ph.D. student in Digital Humanities and adjunct professor at UCF, has a storied history in the Uncle Lou’s-centered Orlando underground that informs Ephemera Eternal, whether as part of Temperament, Flying Limbs, Ad Nauseum or booking shows. Participants will use Richey’s browser-based zine tool Ziner to generate original pamphlets from Ziner’s database of images and articles, which includes snippets from Orlando Weekly (hey, that’s us!) on DIY subcultures and gentrification. Walk away with your own physical zine that a network outage can’t take from you. 5 p.m., Framework Craft Coffee House, 1201 N. Phantasmagoria XVII: Frankenstein

One of literature’s (and classic film’s) most famous monsters can trace its origin to a very weird vacation. Phantasmagoria returns for a Halloween shindig with Frankenstein, looking back to a stormy 1816 getaway where writers Mary Shelley,

WEDNESDAY–TUESDAY, OCT. 14-20, 2026 Scan for comprehensive listings or visit orlandoweekly.com/events

Percy Bysshe Shelley, Lord Byron, John Polidori and Claire Clairmont passed the time by trying to frighten one another. As popular culture demonstrates, Mary clearly won. And two centuries later, their parlor game is still supplying nightmares. This production builds a whole evening around the stories born that night, including Polidori’s “The Vampyre,” Byron’s “Darkness” and the titular modern Prometheus. For the uninitiated, the troupe’s whole thing is essentially gothic vaudeville: dramatic storytelling mixed with theater, puppetry and other old-school stage spectacles. The Orlando company creates a maximalist stage world designed to pull audiences closer to the eerie atmosphere of that fateful 1816 night. Wait until you find out the real monster was a simple quill pen — and the human brain. 8 p.m., Alexis & Jim Pugh Theater, Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, 445 S. Magnolia Ave, drphillipscenter.org, $50-$63. — EG SATURDAY, OCT. 17

Right in the Eye

The recent trend of pairing adventurous composers with groundbreaking pieces of silent film history — we’re thinking specifically of Central Florida Composers Forum taking on Murnau’s Nosferatu — continues with the Maitland Art and History Center hosting creative ensemble Alcoléa live-soundtracking the fantastical visions of Georges Méliès. The aptly titled Right in the Eye (a playful pun on a rocketship zipping straight into the peeper of an anthropomorphic moon in A Trip to the Moon) has been toured around the world by this French sound collective, complementing Méliès’ works with suitably arcane instruments like the theremin, melodica and glockenspiel. This event is part of the weeklong VI FIAE multimedia event series. 7 p.m., Art & History Museums Maitland, 231 W. Packwood Ave., Maitland, artandhistory.org, donations encouraged. — MM

Gala of Ghouls: Coven Revival

It seems like only yesterday that ferocious trans drag performer Kissa Death started her Gala of Ghouls show — as a Come Out With Pride afterparty! — in Thornton Park. But this week she marks three years of relentless creativity with Coven Revival at Conduit. The combo Halloween- and Pride-themed soiree features drag and burlesque performers and collaborators Amnesia Effect, Your Scary Godmother and E, as well as Dr. Victor Von Vector and more. The event, a Best of Orlando® readers’ poll finalist, has always surprised and delighted — they’ve done a fashion show, a séance and a scare trail, and they bring in consistently large crowds. “Gala prides itself on promoting and highlighting diversity at our shows in ways we are not often given the space to as queer people, trans performers and people of color. It’s a testament to the strong queer community in Orlando,” Kissa told us. 7 p.m., Conduit, 6700 Aloma Ave., Winter Park, conduitfl.com, $17.21. — MM
