» A Delta Airlines worker died on the job at Orlando International Airport
A Delta Airlines employee died in a fatal accident on the job at Orlando International Airport last week, according to airline officials. The worker, identified as Daniel Maldonado, died of multiple blunt impact injuries after a vehicle struck the jetbridge next to a plane full of passengers. A report from the Ninth Circuit Medical Examiner’s Office determined that the death of the 49-year-old Orlando man was accidental. A spokesperson for Delta Airlines said in a statement to Orlando Weekly that they were “heartbroken” by the loss of their team member. Operations at Delta’s Orlando station were temporarily paused last Thursday evening, resulting in the cancellation of one flight. Workplace deaths in Florida are typically conducted by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration, a federal workplace health and safety agency, while local law enforcement agencies may be involved if there is suspicion of a crime. In Florida, federal OSHA is the only government agency that investigates workplace fatalities for violations of government health and safety standards, since Florida abolished its state labor department more than two decades ago.
» ‘Uncle Lou’ transported to Orange County jail under ICE hold Cleon Ortille Williams, better known as Uncle Lou of the longtime Mills 50 music venue Uncle Lou’s, is currently in Orange County jail under an immigration hold with no criminal charges. Williams was booked into Orange County Corrections Facility last Saturday, according to the department. Video currently being shared on social media shows Williams being taken into custody at Lou’s, with law enforcement agents — OPD and agents with the Florida Division of Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco, as it turned out — telling patrons to leave the bar. As we go to press Monday, Williams is still in the Orange County jail on an immigration hold, still with no criminal charges filed. Outcry was immediate from Orlando’s music community, with a GofundMe currently online and plans for several benefit concerts in the works to defray any legal fees.
» Data show Florida measles cases rising as summer travel season nears As summer approaches, measles cases in Florida and across the United States continue to rise. Florida Department of Health data show that between the start of the year and May 1, 150 suspected and confirmed measles cases were reported to state health officials. Fourteen of Florida’s 67 counties have reported confirmed or suspected measles cases. Collier County has 107 reported cases, more than any other county. About 40% of the Florida cases are in the 15- to 19-year-old age cohort but people of all ages have been infected, the data show. Measles vaccines were first introduced in the United States March 1963. Thirty-seven years later, the disease was eliminated from the United States. Elimination doesn’t mean there were no cases but that there were no domestically contracted cases for more than 12 months. But there’s been a resurgence of measles outbreaks amid growing skepticism about the safety of vaccines.
» Rapper Kodak Black was arrested and jailed in Orlando
Florida rapper Kodak Black has bonded out of jail after being arrested in Orlando last week on a drug trafficking warrant related to a November incident. His bond was set by a judge last Thursday at $75,000, despite efforts by his lawyers to set a bond of $10,000. According to county clerk of court records, the 28-year-old rapper — whose legal name is Bill Kapri — is accused of trafficking the synthetic drug MDMA. Kapri was arrested last Wednesday after flying from California to Florida to turn himself in. The story began in November 2025, when Orlando Police Department officers responded to reports of gunshots in the Mercy Drive area. Officers found three individuals inside a BMW vehicle, which also contained a “smell of freshly burnt cannabis,” according to an affidavit. The cops searched the vehicle, while another man — identified later by police as Kodak Black — “approached officers and began observing the search.” Searching a second vehicle, a green Lamborghini, police then found a white bag containing marijuana, a pink bag containing $37,000 and a quantity of MDMA, and a pair of pink scissors. An identification card with the name Bill Kapri, who is HaitianAmerican and a resident of Fort Lauderdale, was also found in the vehicle. Black officially entered a plea of “not guilty” and his lawyers reportedly vowed to fight the “ridiculous” charges. Another man found sleeping in the rear seat of the second vehicle last November, James Demetrius Twitty, was also
arrested in April on charges of possession of cannabis and concealing a firearm. His charges were later dropped, however, on the same day as Kapri’s arrest.
» Lake Eola swans to be rehomed after long battle with bird flu
The City of Orlando is relocating its iconic swans from Lake Eola Park following a years-long battle with deadly bird flu outbreaks. City officials first confirmed in 2024 that four swans found dead in the park were killed by the illness. The most recent outbreak in 2026 killed 29 swans. The significant loss, along with upcoming development planned for the park, was enough to push the city to pause the decades-long Lake Eola Park swan program. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission reviewed the care and management of the swans, and the city ultimately determined it would be “increasingly difficult” to consistently meet care requirements in an active urban park with major construction plans. The current 44 captive swans living in Lake Eola are to be rehomed to various farms and zoos, starting with the cygnets, their parents and any eggs, the city says. Visitors may still see wild swans and other waterfowl in and around Lake Eola Park, as these birds are not part of the city’s captive flock. An exact timeline for the rehoming has yet to be shared, but the city says the swans will be removed before the start of Lake Eola’s makeover, in order to reduce stress on the animals. The city has also not stated how long the “pause” on the program will last.

OUCH! VOUCHERS WOUND PUBLIC SCHOOLS
Florida teachers union, parents sue state over crumbling public school system starved by state vouchers
BY MCKENNA SCHUELER
Florida’s statewide teachers union, a local school board member, and other parents and public education advocates jointly filed a lawsuit against the state Department of Education for their alleged failure to uphold Florida students’ constitutional right to a free, “safe” and “high-quality” public school education.
Under Article IX of Florida’s state constitution, it is considered “a paramount duty of the state to make adequate provision for the education of all children” and “adequate provision shall be made by law for a uniform, efficient, safe, secure, and high quality system of free public schools.”
As public school districts across the state, including in Orange County, make plans to shutter public schools and lay off hundreds of staff, public education advocates argue that the state Legislature and the state Board of Education are failing to sufficiently invest in the public education system.
Looming school closures in Orange County, for instance, have been tied at least in part to major drops in student enrollment — and subsequent losses in state funding — attributed by district leaders to the Trump administration’s harsh immigration crackdown, declining birth rates, and an increasingly bloated state voucher program that siphons billions of dollars each year from the public education system.
“In Orange County, where I teach, public school students are being faced with real challenges that are directly related to a state budget that does not support them, salaries that does not support their educators and a changing dynamic that is seeing
our schools close, our cost of living rise, our experienced educators leaving the profession — and our students are the ones paying the price,” said Ladara Royal, a college and career specialist at Lake Buena Vista High School, speaking at a press conference organized by the Florida Education Association in Tallahassee. “When we look at the challenges our public schools face and realize that every single year, $5 billion are siphoned out of our public schools toward other systems that are often run by for-profit and corporate companies in the state that are less accountable, less transparent, we quickly then realize the inequities in our system that are at stake,” he added.
Florida’s school voucher program allows Florida parents to apply for up to $8,000 in public tax dollars annually to home-school or to send their children to private schools that can legally discriminate against students with disabilities. Deregulation of the voucher program in 2023 — including the removal of income caps — has resulted in a massive expansion of its use, revealing glaring accountability issues that have received bipartisan rebuke. Public schools that are required not to discriminate then end up closing as the funds trickle away, leaving those students without schools to attend.
“We’re committed to our students 100 percent, and we ask that our state be committed to us as well,” said Kim Andrews Ward, a behavior specialist for Leon County Public Schools, speaking at the press conference last Tuesday. She said that many communities, including her own, are struggling to retain school staff due to low wages, stating that 60 percent of educational staff professionals make
Representing more than 120,000 educators and education staff professionals statewide, the Florida Education Association is an affiliate of the National Education Association and the American Federation of Teachers. The political right wing and its privatization allies in the DeSantis and Trump administrations have supported policy moves intended to weaken and ultimately eliminate teachers unions like the NEA and AFT — in part because these unions oppose privatization efforts pushed by conservative billionaires to serve their own financial and ideological interests.
“We have spent years working with lawmakers to address the concerns of parents, educators and now, even the state auditor general regarding the inconsistencies in Florida’s non-uniform education system,” Andrew Spar, a music teacher, parent and president of the FEA, said in a statement. “But once again, lawmakers have let down Florida’s students and families, and we are left with no choice but to turn to the courts,” he continued. “With this lawsuit we are simply asking for accountability, transparency and a basic set of educational standards, which is what every parent wants — regardless of where they choose to send their children. Floridians have made it clear we should be strengthening, not abandoning, our public schools.”
The Florida Department of Education told Orlando Weekly in a statement that the FEA “is once again wasting taxpayer dollars and members’ dues on a frivolous lawsuit.”
less than $35,000 a year — equivalent to $15 an hour for someone working full-time. “We need action right now,” she said.
Orange County school board member Stephanie Vanos, elected in 2024, is one of the plaintiffs in the lawsuit filed by the Florida Education Association. She joined in her personal capacity as a parent. Vanos told Orlando Weekly in a statement that she joined the lawsuit because the diversion of public tax dollars away from public schools “and into shadow parallel school systems is harmful to students and our public school community; offensive to taxpayers whose hard-earned dollars are funding the minimally accountable and non-transparent taxpayer-funded voucher program; and unconstitutional, given the lack of uniformity across publicly funded schools.”
Despite an independent audit detailing the misuse of hundreds of millions of dollars in the voucher program, she said House leadership in Tallahassee refused to do anything to rein it in.
“We don’t have time for inaction,” she argued. “Our students need high-quality educators, programs and opportunities in their public schools now, and I am grateful to the taxpayers, teachers, small-business owners and the FEA for bringing this lawsuit.”
The Florida Education Association and its affiliates have filed several lawsuits and complaints against state education agencies in recent years, over issues of academic freedom, attacks on the state’s public sector unions — a targeted effort to eliminate “partisan” education unions — and protections for educators and students during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The suit also names as defendants the state education commissioner Anastasios “Stasi” Kamoutsas, Florida State Board of Education chair Ryan Petty, and other members of the State Board of Education. Quote-tweeting the FEA’s decision to file a lawsuit on social media last week, Kamoutsas wrote,“Thanks to @GovRonDeSantis, every Florida family has access to universal school choice, empowering them to select the learning environment that best fits their child’s individual needs.”
“We stand unapologetically convicted on the principle of always putting students first!” Kamoutsas added.
Florida has a long history of educators speaking up to demand stronger investment in public education. In 1968, Florida teachers organized the first statewide teachers strike in U.S. history, even though it was illegal for them to do so under the state constitution. In 1965, state lawmakers had killed a $51 million proposal for teacher wage increases, under threat of the governor’s veto. “As the state’s education budget became increasingly depressed, so did the teachers’ morale. The sinkhole was widening and Florida teachers were sliding into the abyss,” wrote Dan Cameron in his 2008 book, Educational Conflict in the Sunshine State: The Story of the 1968 Statewide Teacher Walkout.
Florida teachers haven’t struck since, although state legislators and DeSantis nonetheless approved a new law (SB 1296) this year that, in part, increases financial penalties for illegal public employee strikes.

WHAT THE FRINGE?!
Orlando Fringe shows worth your time and your money
BY SETH KUBERSKY
The Orlando Fringe schedule is an embarrassment of riches. It’s tempting to treat Fringe like a roll of the dice and just cruise into whatever shows you can get tickets to, but there’s a better way to live! Read our critics’ reviews — this year Seth Kubersky is joined by Arsheeya Garg and Sabrina Hansen — going up online fast and furious throughout the first week of the festival. Then choose where to spend your ticket dollars.
Here are just a few of the shows Seth has reviewed so far; be sure to keep an eye on orlandoweekly.com to stay informed. — JBY
Queer!
Descolonizarte Teatro, Inc.
Silver Venue, Orlando Family Stage
A decade after the Pulse Nightclub tragedy made visible the vulnerability of Orlando’s queer Latinx citizens, Descolonizarte Teatro (Desco) is shining a spotlight on the community’s continuing vibrant vitality with their Orlando
Fringe revival of Queer! Under director Nadia Garzon, the five-member ensemble of LGBTQidentifying performers — Mimi Batista, Leandra “Slim” Diaz, Jon Jimenez, Natalia Soler and Alejandro “Nico Speed” Montano — collaborated to devise this emotional collage of storytelling and singing based on their personal experiences.
It begins with a bracing pedestrian movement piece that uses Viewpoints-style techniques to turn Spanish sexual slurs into a disturbingly hypnotic dance. From there, they take turns sharing intimate anecdotes about “coming-out stories that never got to come out,” in an effort to transform anti-queer curses from weapons into magic shields.
The text flows freely between both English and Español, but no te preocupes if you are monolingual, because subtitle screens flank the stage. Each actor gets multiple opportunities to shine — Nico’s serpentine soliloquy about sibilant S’s and soft wrists; Mimi’s folklorico guitar strumming; Jon’s punk-rock outbursts
— but Leandra’s lyrical Beat-inflected prose, with haunting refrains about “hiding the loudest part of myself,” made the biggest imprint on me.
Queer! is an emotionally harrowing yet ultimately uplifting exploration of important issues — including overlooked ones like bi erasure and straight-presenting privilege — that should be considered essential viewing for family and allies alike. I only wish that Desco had shaved a few seconds off to squeeze into a 60-minute time slot, lest anyone skip it because it’s over an hour.

Awaken
Emergence Dance
Pink Venue, Lowndes Shakespeare Center
The quantity and quality of contemporary dance companies participating in Orlando Fringe has risen and fallen over the years, so it’s gratifying to see director Cindy Heen’s Emergence Dance return to the Festival with Awaken , a polished and passionate piece of
movement theater that lives up to the promise of their acclaimed Dream in 2024.
Following a tragic inciting incident that’s expressed through slow-motion weight-sharing, the lead character (Jasper Arrigo) goes on a hero’s journey through the five stages of grief, guided by a poetry-reciting Ringleader (Mars Powers) though dance-based vignettes incorporating elements of modern, ballet and even acrobatics.
The choreography by Heen and her team evolves from mechanical pedestrian movement to free-flowing organic forms, as Arrigo abandons anger and denial for acceptance and awareness.
Like their last show, the large ensemble has a couple corps members who aren’t yet on their castmates’ level, but Arrigo and Powers remain the main reasons to see this troupe; Arrigo is exceptionally expressive for such a strong athlete, while Powers has a fascinating feline physicality that somehow makes his Lewis Carroll-like nonsense verses seem insightful.
Throw in boldly colorful lighting, Sonja Rosignol’s entrancingly androgynous costumes, and a carefully curated soundtrack spanning Hidden Citizens to Billie Eilish, and Awaken is easily a must-see pick for dance fans at this year’s Orlando Fringe. (60 minutes; all ages; $15)

MacShrek: The Comedy of Ogres New Players Co.
Yellow Venue, Lowndes Shakespeare Center
Orlando Fringe has seen far more than its faire share of mashups between the Bard and the big screen, and MacShrek is easily the goofiest and greenest since Shakespeare’s Ghostbusters in 2018. Writer Justin M.G. Hughes (who embodies the titular ogre in verdant vest and theme park headband ears) has dressed up the plot of the first film from DreamWorks’ meme-generating franchise with RenFest-ready garb, and recruited a half-dozen of the best Elizabethan players he could find on short notice.
Using clever rhyming couplets and occasionally inconsistent iambic pentameter, this adaptation leans as much on Hamlet as it does on the Scottish Play, while roping in a bi-curious Falstaff as Lord Farquad, turning Princess
Fiona into Twelfth Night’s Viola (with the attitude of Taming of the Shrew’s Katherina), and dubbing Midsummer’s Bottom into Donkey (natch). MacShrek also owes a spiritual debt to Monty Python and EPCOT’s old World Showcase Players, with a game cast that fully invests in farcical foolishness like random 1980s references to Michael Jackson and Say Anything
This the kind of spoofy show where the Dragon wears cardboard wings and yells, “Fearsome roar!” instead of just roaring, and the hero farts during an impassioned soliloquy; yet it’s also surprisingly smart and sharply performed, with tight comic timing almost all the way through (save for some brief, ill-advised audience interaction). Katherine Stevens earns a nod as the Terry Gilliam of the group, standing out as Thelonius and other supporting roles, and Hughes’ climactic spin on The Merchant of Venice was actually quite stirring. Best of all: In this Shrek, there is no Smash Mouth! (60 minutes; 7 and up; $15)
DO THE FRINGE
Make the most of your Fringe Festival experience, like the seasoned bohemian you are
BY MATTHEW MOYER AND JUNO LE
From rough and tumble beginnings as near-guerrilla theater downtown to an arts takeover of Loch Haven, Fringe is eye-opening fun, but you need to be prepared. For a first-time Fringer, the festival may be rather overwhelming (I need a button?!). Here are a few things to consider in your Fringe strategy to keep you from being a hopeless square.
Buttons
Yes, the buttons are a thing. The fashionable $10 festival buttons — in four freaky designs — are a one-time purchase that directly funds Orlando Fringe’s operations, leaving ticket sales to benefit the artists. Buttons may be purchased online beforehand or in-person at any Fringe box office location or info table. Everyone over the age of 12 must have a button to attend a Fringe show. The free happenings at Visual Fringe, Kids Fringe, the Fringe Lawn and the Outdoors Stage, luckily, do not require buttons.
Box office
Tickets to shows may be purchased in-person, but it’s recommended you pre-purchase tickets online, especially if you plan to attend one of the more buzzed-about shows. Venues are intimate and do sell out! Tickets generally run you $15, and the artists keep 100 percent of the profits.
Schedule
Orlando Fringe Festival runs a mammoth May 12 through May 25. Running dates for shows and events are listed on Fringe’s events page online, which details location, showtimes and ticket prices. And there’s a downloadable daily schedule on the Fringe’s website to better map out your sly plan of artsy attack.
Weather
As we’re writing this a few days out for print, we’re basically in a drought … but as attendees of Welcome to Rockville can tell you, strong storms pop up out of nowhere. So before leaving for Fringe, be sure you have the essentials to combat both excessive heat and a surprise shower. A hat, sunscreen and umbrella are highly recommended.
Accessibility
Aside from keeping ticket prices affordable, Fringe aims to be accessible with services that allow for both the hearing- and visually-impaired Fringers to enjoy performances.
Hydration
The heat in Florida is not something to take lightly, especially since we’re already breaking records — stay hydrated during Fringe and grab a drink of water the moment you start feeling
Wild & Gay Animal Kinkdom: An Adult Puppet Show
The Ugly Dog Presents Green Venue, Orlando Family Stage Homo sapiens may think we’ve cornered the market on horniness, but the diversity of human sexuality pales in comparison to the kinky hijinks found throughout the animal kingdom (and no, I don’t mean the Disney theme park). Writer/ director/puppeteer Alexander Hehr (Born Ugly Yesterday, Alphabet Soup) returns to Orlando Fringe, accompanied by co-stars Sean Dunphy and Alastair Milburn, to present his latest and greatest adults-only Muppet-adjacent creations.
Haywood J. Sloth, the world’s first fey folivora, is welcoming us humans into his watering hole-slash-dive bar for his fellow queer critters, so we can learn all about bottlenose blowjobs, transgender deer and surrogate swans … just don’t ask him about a certain I-Drive attraction that never managed to open (thank g-d).
Wild & Gay Animal Kinkdom is a flaming fusion
parched. Replenish at the Fringe Lawn between shows and stay cool!
Parking
It’s Orlando, so be prepared for a bloodbath finding parking. All Loch Haven parking is free, but is very limited and sure to fill up quickly. The Science Center parking garage is paid parking, but a shorter journey to Loch Haven Park. All Advent Health garages are paid lots and several minutes’ walk to Fringe central. Parking at McRae General Contractors at 500 E. Princeton St. is free, and though it is a bit of a walk, it is still in high demand. If possible, save yourself the trouble and avoid driving. Opt for walking, biking, being a passenger princess, public transport or rideshare if you can. It’s better for the environment and saves you a Fringe headache. We can’t stress this enough because …
Lateness
All shows start on time and once doors close, you cannot enter — even with a purchased ticket. (We almost experienced this amid button confusion a few years back, so trust us! ) Some artists allow for a five-minute grace period, but best not to push your luck. Consider arriving to your venue of choice at least 30 minutes before showtime, and remember to account for the time it takes to drive there. And park. And walk. If you’re coming from a different show, make sure you have plenty of time in between.
Venues
The main Fringe venues are color-coded; the Blue, Brown, Pink, Yellow, and Orange venues are located at Orlando Shakes (Lowndes Shakespeare Center) and the Green, Silver, Peach and Scarlet venues are located at Orlando Family Stage.
Bring Your Own Venues
The BYOVs are partner venues off-site from
of high-camp comedy and earnest education that would give naturalist David Attenborough an awkward hard-on, if not a full-on heart attack. Hysterical highlights include a drag queen cow with squirting udders, a pair of polyamorous primates and a lapdancing tortoise marionette. A handful of bits wear out their welcome, and the press preview performance was a bit of a self-admitted hot mess, with decapitated puppets and prematurely popping props, but Hehr and team proudly powered through to their audience’s dazed delight.
I don’t know how it would play at The Villages, but Orlando Fringe is full of delightful freaks who will feel right at home with Haywood. No matter what the right-wing might claim, science says that the sexual spectrum is as natural as a rainbow, and Wild & Gay Animal Kinkdom only emphasizes that humans are just as messy and complicated as any other savage species. the main festival grounds. This year’s consolidated roster of BYOVs include the Starlite Room and Ivanhoe 1915 at Savoy, the Renaissance Theatre and Ten10 Brewing’s Bside. Each BYOV venue may have its own age restrictions.
Fringe Lawn and Outdoor Stage
This is the spot to refresh and refuel. Located at Loch Haven Park, here you’ll find food vendors, a beer tent, other beverages and free entertainment at the outdoor stage. The outdoor stage is located at the Fringe lawn, featuring live local music. It’s the prime spot to cool down, meet up with fellow Fringers, gossip and linger. There will be a Goblin Market!
Kids Fringe
The coolest kids at Fringe will be chilling at the Orlando Garden Club during the festival. (Can you tell from our puns that there will be AC?) Each Saturday and Sunday during the festival, Kids Fringe hosts free activities, games and shows from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Events are listed on the Kids Fringe page on the Fringe’s website.
Visual Fringe
Every piece of art on display — paintings, drawings, jewelry, sculptures and more – at Visual Fringe is for sale. Visual Fringe is headquartered at Orlando Shakes. Be on the lookout for events at the Visual Fringe Gallery, including art markets, a tea swap, live storytelling and collage-making.
Fringe After Dark
If you’re an adult and a night owl, don’t miss out on this late-night lineup for the 18+ festgoers. On offer are offsite delights like Disco Boots at the Ren and a Midnight Male Revue at Savoy. Closer to the action you’ll find the Flashlight Cabaret featuring a variety show lit only by the audience and their flashlights, and the WTF(ringe) Cabaret.

VISIONS OF ORLANDO
The Mennello Museum’s Our Orlando group show returns, featuring three innovative local artists
BY MATTHEW MOYER
This week the Mennello Museum in Loch Haven brings back their Our Orlando group exhibition for a fourth year. It’s a snapshot of the state of our city’s visual arts scene, featuring current work from three very distinct Orlando artists, curated from their
studios by the Mennello’s team. This year’s Our Orlando features Tasanee Durrett, Mado Smith and Martha Jo Mahoney, with four works each by Durrett and Mahoney and two pieces from Smith. The exhibition’s opening reception is Friday, and the show runs through late August.
Our Orlando’s aim this year has shifted from a thank-you to Orlando artists to spotlighting emerging artists. This year the show is “focusing on a moment in an artist’s studio” from three carefully curated local creatives, explains Mennello director Shannon Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald and exhibition co-curator Flynn Dobbs visited each of the three artists’ workspaces before selecting pieces to highlight. “We’re showing major American artists throughout history,” Fitzgerald tells Orlando Weekly.“And we want Orlando artists to be included in that narrative.”
Martha Jo Mahoney contributes four abstract paintings characterized by bold colors and bolder brushstrokes. Three of her works — “Molly Girl,” “The Pond (Diptych)” and “Something In My Soul” — despite their kinetic undertones, have a calming and soothing nature, a perfect idyll for an ever-worsening news cycle. Mahoney’s works in Our Orlando, particularly her use of color, are influenced by growing up on Lake Conway.
“Each piece begins with drawing, using color,

brush strokes and mark-making to build loose assemblages that celebrate my ties to the city,” says Mahoney.
“I’ve been following Martha’s work for a long time. She’s a big part of the abstract painters working in Orlando at McRae Studio, and she’s been part of that language for a long time,” says Fitzgerald. “She hasn’t had a museum show, and she’s working really hard. So I started, really, with her.”
Tasanee Durrett’s four works — “Beneath the Surface,” “Oceanic Origins,” “The Seed That Flourished” and “Endure Endure Endure” — explore the history of human relationships with natural resources around us through lush linework and florid illustrations, pulled from her Black Maritime series, in which she explores “the stories of Black captains, seafarers and coastal communities who shaped maritime trade and built lives around the sea, but whose histories rarely get told,” says Durrett. “I work with salt, raffia and silkworm cocoons to bring those stories up to the surface.”
“As an artist, I was able to watch what [Durrett] was doing over the last three years as she participated in our Bloomberg Philanthropies public art grant,” says Fitzgerald. “What’s exciting about her work is, in 18 months, she’s trying new tactile materials and really pushing her practice from materials to concepts.”
Mado Smith’s two pieces — “Dawn” and “Corona Silvestre” — combine striking oil painting with an almost collage aesthetic, creating intriguing juxtapositions co-existing as an otherworldly whole.
“From a curatorial perspective, I was thinking he was really pushing himself in scale, from murals to two small sculptures, really looking at the flora and fauna of Florida, and that it needs to be preserved, and maybe he could do that through whimsical figuration,” explains Fitzgerald. “He’s exploring the mystic and spiritual in Florida landscape from a conservation place, not like a didactic place.”
For Fitzgerald, instead of treating this exhibition as a one-and-done local show, she sees Our Orlando inextricably connected to the museum’s mission of presenting new views of the arc of American art, but through a Central Floridian lens.
“I think all three of those artists are looking at that, so that’s a kind of regional perspective without being, you know, regional. I think our audience appreciates seeing American art through 250 years, right? We’ve showed Impressionism and social realism and certainly folk art and American Deep South, and to move it all the way up to what’s happening in our community with artists who make the decision to earn a living here and stay here — that’s important.”

SMALL WONDER
Ferratti’s may be serving the city’s finest Italian fare out of a cramped stall in Avalon Park
BY FAIYAZ KARA
Ihadn’t motored out to Avalon Park or, as I like to call it, “the Orlando neighborhood that’s nowhere near Orlando,” since Brianto’s lured me to the eastern fringes many years ago for one of their boffo cheesesteaks. Not that the drive is without its roadside merits. The pair of steam-spewing cooling towers overlooking the master-planned community give off a Springfield kinda vibe, though in a less cartoonish and more threatening sort of way. Alas, the smokestacks aren’t part of a nuclear plant but, rather, the Stanton Energy Center — an electricity hub powered by coal and natural gas, or so said Grok after the pal queried it while “driving” an electric-powered Tesla 3. So we paid no heed to the billowing plumes of vapor because, on this day, it was the power of wood — wood fire, to be specific — that consumed our senses.
That fire is generated from the innards of a Marra Forni oven at Ferratti’s, a back-corner stall inside the Marketplace at Avalon Park run by Daniel Ruvolo. The Sicilian chef-owner makes the most out of the cramped yet design-forward quarters: brushed copper finishes, gilded mirrors, red Sanremo espresso machine and a colorful mural on the wall featuring the trinacria. The three-legged Medusa head is the official emblem of Sicily, yet when I caught sight of that gorgeous beast of an oven, my face nearly turned to stone staring at it for as long as I did.
Only the display case of focaccia, bread and house-made pasta broke my gaze, and it seemed entirely appropriate to order the “Segreto di Bronte” ($25), a dish focused around that most Sicilian of ingredients, the “green gold” of that sunny island, the “secret of Bronte” — the pistachio. The nut is blended into a pesto cream sauce with guanciale and draped over large tubular paccheri. Stretched burrata covers it all, with a couple of yellow nasturtiums for aesthetic measure.
Fettuccine rolled into a creamy basil-pesto bianco ($17.50) with walnuts and Parmesan sauce was just as orgiastic as the carbonara ($24.50) finished inside a flambéed wheel of 24-month Parmigiano Reggiano cheese by Ruvolo himself. But tableside theatrics aside, this is carbonara the way it’s supposed to be — no cream, just egg yolks, black pepper, guanciale and plenty of Pecorino-Romano. It’s certainly the finest carbonara I’ve had in the city, and the same goes for the bruschetta toasted and layered with stracciatella, folds of prosciutto di San Daniele and fresh strawberries ($19). A favorite of favorites? Perhaps. At this point, the spread of food on our table drew quite a few onlookers.“WHAT IS THAT?!” gasped a passerby, pointing to the “Schiacciata Napoletana” ($18), a folded monstrosity of pizza dough stuffed with mortadella, sun-dried tomato cream, arugula, pistachios and burrata
FERRATTI’S

along with a splash of 24-month aged balsamic. It’s a panuozzo of epic proportions (and delight). That pizza dough, BTW, is made with Caputo Nuvola flour and fermented for up to 72 hours before being fired at 700 degrees for a couple of minutes. On the classic Neapolitan pie ($21), the cornicione were as swollen and inflated as some of the press releases I receive on the daily. Buttressing the crust was a San Marzano tomato sauce, fat blobs of buffalo mozzarella and fresh basil. What’s not to like? Another like: All our food was served on actual ceramic dishes, a perk I didn’t expect in a food hall.
And, of course, cannoli, that most Sicilian of cappers, was had. First the pistachio ($12), with its creamy blend of mascarpone and ricotta whipped and infused with Sicilian pistachio, and then the ricotta, and the chocolate chipfilled “Siciliani” ($9) plugged at both ends with orbs of Ferrero Rocher.
If you ask me, Ferratti’s has already outgrown this space in just six months and will very likely grow into a full-fledged restaurant. All well and good, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy traveling out to the far reaches of Orange County and discovering some of the finest Italian fare in the back recesses of this out-of-the-way food hall. The thrill of the chase? Sure. But, if I’m being honest, Ferratti’s had me at first sight of that oven.

COUCHSURFING
Streaming premieres you won’t want to miss this week.
BY STEVE SCHNEIDER
Premieres Wednesday:
The Bus: A French Football Mutiny — With the World Cup drawing ever nearer, we’re going to be up to our tracheas in freakin’ soccer programming for a few more weeks. Take this documentary about the 2010 competition, in which France’s entire team went on strike and refused to leave their bus because their starting striker had been booted for swearing at a coach. See what I mean? This is what passes for juicy scandal in that boring-ass sport? Wake me when even one of them can cause as much genuine trouble as a Mets wife. (Netflix)
Good Omens — What was supposed to be a full final season ends with the whimper of a single episode that credits disgraced creator Neil Gaiman merely as part of the writing team. If they waited another week, maybe they could get it down to an animated short and an apology. (Prime Video)
ble navigating modern masculinity — a show that is in turn a remake of Spain’s Alpha Males, which just dropped its fifth season. Seriously, guys: Nine seasons total, and you still haven’t learned not to send dick pics? I’m starting to realize why one of the most popular shows these days is called The Bear. (Netflix)
Premieres Thursday:
Nemesis — Power creator Courtney A. Kemp brings us a crime drama starring Y’Lan Noel as a master thief and Matthew Law as the cop who’s out to bring him down. The producers promise they’re going to “subvert the heist genre at every turn”; I can only assume they’ll start by revealing Noel’s character is not actually a deliberate thief but simply inept at running a nonprofit. (Netflix)
On the Roam — Julian Schnabel is among the creative visionaries Jason Momoa hooks up with in Season 2, as he continues his road trip into the heart of American inspiration. Conspicuously absent from the roster: whoever hit on the idea of superimposing Will Poulter’s face on Milly Alcock’s body, because Momoa got it straight from James Gunn that it was probably a trained monkey what did that. (HBO Max)
Soul Mate — With gay sports stories the unexpected breakout genre of 2026, here’s the story of a hot young Japanese expat and the Korean boxer who becomes his lover. Don’t expect anything as steamy as Heated Rivalry, though, because we all know those boxers are positive shrinking violets compared to the Hanson Brothers. (Netflix)
Premieres Friday:
Off Campus — This series adaptation of Elle Kennedy’s collegiate romance books begins with a season about the relationship of convenience between a young songwriter and the hockey player she convinces to pose as her boyfriend. But come on: No one’s going to believe that, now that streaming has taught us all hockey players are gay. (Prime Video)
Perfect Match — Veterans of Temptation Island, Vanderpump Rules and Building the Band are among the contestants in Season 4 of the show that encourages reality stars to hook up for purposes of emotional and career fulfillment. In other words, it’s exactly like your own dating life, if anybody other than you actually gave a shit. (Netflix)
Roosters — And for proof that nothing has legs like male befuddlement, we’re getting a second season of the Dutch comedy about four middle-aged dudes who are having trou-
or face them all in a bunch? (Paramount+)
The Crash — Revisit the 2022 Ohio auto wreck that claimed the lives of two young passengers and resulted in surprise murder charges for driver Mackenzie Shirilla. As you may recall, her attorneys made legal history with what became known as the “changing the station to smooth jazz” defense. (Netflix)
Dutton Ranch — The fourth and counting spinoff from Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone is a Texas-based story that stars Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser. Yes, the same Cole Hauser that Sheridan sued for copyright infringement back in 2023 over their competing coffee brands. Because nothing says “manly men of the open land like fighting over coffee. (Paramount+)
Rivals — Hayley Atwell and Rupert Everett are among those joining the cast as the competition for control of the British airwaves heats up in Season 2. Fun fact: This 1980s period dramedy was inspired by the pudding-wrestling matches Lord Lew Grade used to have with Rupert Murdoch. (Hulu)
The Wonderfools — The end of the 20th century is the time frame for a Korean action-comedy series in which a bunch of hapless schlubs are given immense power to save the world from impending destruction. Which reminds me: If your Netflix feed craps out while you’re watching, tech support is there 24/7 to help. (Netflix)
Premieres Saturday:
Berlin and the Lady With an Ermine — A valuable painting is the MacGuffin of this latest crime thriller series spun off from the fabulously successful Money Heist. The twist, though, is that Berlin and his crew are only pretending to be interested in the artwork so they can get closer to the real object of their heart’s desire. As if Perfect Match didn’t remind you enough of your love life, amirite? (Netflix)
Kartavya — Saif Ali Khan plays an Indian policeman whose realization that his position is morally compromised has profound implications for his family and his life. OK, now that every country has had 10 of these, maybe somebody can stir the pot with a story about a rookie cop who is delighted to learn that everything about the gig is 100 percent on the up and up and he’ s going to spend the bulk of his time organizing holiday toy drives. (Netflix)
Couples Therapy — In Season 5, Dr. Orna Guralnik helps romantic partners weather challenges like political differences and autism. I was wondering what Elon had been up to recently. But is he going to sit for individual sessions with each of his four baby mamas
Ronda Rousey vs. Gina Carano — Preliminary bouts start at 6 p.m. ET as battling Bernie broad Rousey comes out of retirement to face MAGA grievance machine Carano for the MMA featherweight championship. Not since Louis vs. Schmeling has a fight so perfectly captured an era’s sociopolitical zeitgeist. Except Schmeling didn’t have Joe Rogan to whine to after he got his ass kicked, which is where you can bet this is all going. (Netflix)
Premieres Tuesday:
Untold U.K.: Liverpool’s Miracle of Istanbul — Aaand we almost made it out of the week without another goddamn soccer show. Instead, we’re stuck rehashing the 2005 upset in the UEFA Champions League Final that still has Reds supporters waxing nostalgic. At the risk of belaboring a point, if it were the Cincinnati Reds we were talking about, at least we’d get to hear color commentary from the silhouette of somebody’s bookie. (Netflix)
Wanda Sykes: Legacy — The hugely influential comic actor returned to her alma mater of Hampton University to tape her latest stand-up special. And also to get a solid picture in her mind’s eye of what HBCUs looked like before every last one of them gets turned into a Trader Joe’s. (Netflix)

Propagandhi’s Sulynn Hago comes to Orlando with new solo album Faith in the Doghouse
BY IDA V. ESKAMANI
“Idon’t like to write rock music in a traditional way, because I’m so influenced by my classical training. You know, my favorite music writer almost ever is Bach.”
Sulynn Hago is an artist containing multitudes. Coming of age in Tampa’s punk scene, Hago is known for playing with some of the city’s most infamous bands, including New Bruises, Feral Babies, Ink & Sweat and Career. On top of that, for the last decade she’s played lead guitar for agit-punk legends Propagandhi, a gig she tried out for among hundreds of applicants across the world, beating them all.
“I’ve been mostly a guitarist. That’s been my kind of, if you want, ‘claim to fame’ in my career,” Hago says.
A self-professed music nerd, Hago’s a student
and a teacher of music, studying jazz guitar, training in classical guitar, while also spending her days as a guitar instructor when she isn’t playing or writing music.
Hago’s latest release, Faith in the Doghouse, reflects this journey.“This solo project is really like my life’s work to date, it’s an accumulation of everything I’ve ever studied along the way,” she says.
This record also breaks new ground for Hago. It’s the first album she wrote and recorded entirely by herself, up to and including her first time as a vocalist.
“I was like, ‘Oh, fuck, I gotta sing,’” she says. “I dabbled in singing, but was always so shy and had to almost go through hurdles.”
Much like her methodical approach towards studying guitar, Hago dove deep into vocal
techniques. “Because I had such a good experience with classical guitar, I wanted that same kind of study as a singer, and I had no time to waste, because I have all these years of experience as a guitarist, like 20-something years, and I’m like, the singing has to catch up,” she says.
When you listen to Faith in the Doghouse, it’s hard to believe Hago wasn’t always a vocalist. Her melodic and aggressive singing is paired perfectly with precise basslines and guitar riffs throughout the record.
Sonically, Faith in the Doghouse is not a standard punk album at all.“My sweet spot musically is the ’70s, ’80s, ’90s, right … the vision I had for this project was this new wave ’80s pop-dance music, with a kind of punk sound,” she says.“How do I do everything that I’ve ever wanted in music, that I really care about in one place?”
Faith in the Doghouse took four years to finish, with Hago recording in an apartment in New York, which included building a vocal booth fashioned from PVC pipes, clamps and blankets.
At its core, this is a project a lifetime in the making, with shout-outs to her Florida community and her Puerto Rican roots. Hago dedicated the song “To the Sky” to her old neighbor on the island who is no longer with us, but who

introduced her to punk, and taught her how to play guitar when she was just a toddler.
“I was super shy, and used to give up on things when I didn’t do well. And he was so encouraging. He’s like, ‘Don’t think your fingers are too small. You just got to get used to it.’ And he’d put my fingers on a power chord. He’s like, ‘This is all you need.’”
Hago’s tour — including an Orlando show Friday at Will’s — marks the first live shows for the new record, with a new band too. Hago’s bandmates include one of her students, who also happens to be an ER doctor. “His face shows up on the side of the building at Tampa General,” says Hago, “like he’s a legit motherfucker.” music@orlandoweekly.com

CLUB SPACE FISH REDUX
Because I was underage during its run, my personal memories of Club Space Fish are few but vivid. The first time I tried to go there was for an all-ages (I think) show, where I spent all night on the streets of a pre-gentrification Parramore waiting in a line of punks and skaters to see 7Seconds. We did not blend. Sadly, my curfew kicked in before doors even opened, which I later heard finally happened after midnight.
Another time when I actually made it into the club, I went to see Pigface, where I remember watching a girl lick En Esch’s boot onstage right in front of me. And of course, there was that infamous GG Allin show in 1991. Unfortunately — but also fortunately — I was not at that one. Due to the actual shitshow and the expected official backlash to mixing rock music with feces, that was the Waterloo of Club Space Fish, which was shut down shortly thereafter.
But it was a wild place where wild things happened, the kind of stuff that was already crazy in the moment but would later blossom into legend. The product of an era when “alternative” was an ethos and not a commodity, Club Space Fish — which ran from the late 1980s to the early 1990s — was a true outpost of counterculture in Orlando. More than just a spot for touring acts though, it was an incubator for local artists. In fact, Space Fish was more than just a nightclub, even. It was a tent that covered the creative capers of Mike Brown (of synth-punk pioneers Damage) and Michael Bales (of Love Gods in Leisure Suits and Rocket 88), which included a music label (Space Fish Records) and a zine
This weekend will be a grand fete for a colorful, daring and groundbreaking chapter of Orlando music history that deservedly lives on in both fame and infamy. Go see the iconic Space Fish spirit leap from lore to life
(Splash Magazine). Space Fish was essentially a micro-scene unto itself.
Now, 35 years later, Club Space Fish comes back to life this weekend for one historic night at Conduit (6 p.m. Saturday, May 16, $15-$20).
This won’t be just another basic reunion with DJs. No, it’ll be a total blowout event that’s practically a mini-festival. The concert bill is studded with reunion sets by five classic Space Fish acts: Love Gods in Leisure Suits, Damage, Target Earth, The Riddlers and Bloody Mary. Current local bands Stiletto and Deficit of Dreams will also be featured. In addition to all that, there’ll be the “Wheel of Fish” trivia game hosted by the original Quiz Master Al, themed “Kiss the Cook” cookout, Punk Rock Flea Market
and some surprises. The two Michaels might wrestle, wieners may get tossed, who the fuck knows? What’s certain, though, is that it’ll be nuts. But as stacked as that evening’s bill is, there’s simply no way to pay proper tribute to this amount of Orlando legacy in just one night of music alone. That’s why the Club Space Fish Super Fantastic Story Hour will happen the day after at Will’s Pub (2 p.m. Sunday, May 17, free). Both a continuation and a finale to the celebration, it’ll be an afternoon social featuring a panel discussion and Q&A with key Space Fish figures like its founders, DJ Skeeter, Quiz Master Al and advice columnist Girth Rimway, among others. It’ll be moderated by Jeremy Hileman of the Orange County Regional History Center, which will officially add Space Fish memorabilia to its collection.
Beyond the weekend festivities, however, there’s some big, forward-looking news behind the Space Fish revival. While the reunion will be but a fleeting weekend, Space Fish Records is officially relaunching with a clutch of fresh releases including a brand-new EP from Damage, reissues by both Love Gods in Leisure Suits and Target Earth, and a Club Space Fish live album that’ll be recorded at this weekend’s event. All these, save for the upcoming live album, will be available at the shows.
It all adds up to a grand fete for a colorful, daring and groundbreaking chapter of Orlando music history that deservedly lives on in both fame and infamy. Go see the iconic Space Fish spirit leap from lore to life all weekend long. No shit!

Diljit Dosanjh
Punjabi crossover-pop star Dosanjh is here in the States as part of his “Aura World Tour” of U.S. arenas and stadiums, including stops in New York, Atlanta and Orlando (hey!). Dosanjh preceded the tour with a performance and interview on the Tonight Show a couple of weeks ago, even attempting to school ever-hapless host Jimmy Fallon on his singular dance moves. The singer/actor is riding high on music that melds bhangra beats crossed with a whole world of music, including reggaeton and lithe rock and his own stylistic flair. Is Dosanjh truly the G.O.A.T.? Amanda Lepore
Iconic transgender model, singer, Dragula judge and nightlife doyenne Amanda Lepore is set to materialize in Orlando this weekend in a cloud of diamond dust and exotic perfumes. She’ll be at Southern Nights Friday for a meet-and-greet (my god) and performance where she’ll do whatever the hell she wants — sing, dance, stare imperiously at the assembled faithful — and we will duly love it. Lepore has been in Orlando for the last few months in the form of a portrait that is part of OMA’s David LaChapelle exhibition As the World Turns, casting her in bold Warholian colors as a future-forward Marilyn. Now you can see this glamorous muse in the flesh. If she sings “My Hair Looks Fierce,” we’re done for. 10 p.m., Southern Nights, 375 S. Lords of Acid & Mz Neon
Belgian dancefloor sleazoids Lord of Acid are returning to Orlando with a filthy, sweaty industrial-techno collision custom-made for excess, stimulation and disco-ball scrying. Just as notable to our ears, though, is gloriously messy and confrontational opener Mz Neon. The trans electro-rock artist whips up a sweaty, thoroughly modern pan-genre moshpit, presiding over the chaos like the glamorous “cultural icon” (per Lydia Lunch) she is. Arguably, she’s more subversive than the Lords simply by dint of her reality: being a trans artist touring America beyond the blue-bubble safezones, proferring in-your-face anthems like “Cop Fucker” and “Queen Hyena.” This is the real stuff. 6 p.m., The Abbey, 100 S. Chuwi
Feel the pulse of Puerto Rico’s new wave as Chuwi brings their Primavera Tour to the Beacham Saturday. Recently named by Billboard as one of the “26 Latin Artists to Watch in 2026,” the quartet fuses Afro-Caribbean rhythms with reggaeton, indie-pop and electronic textures, creating a sound that mutates between nostalgic and futuristic. Their breakout single “WELTiTA,” a hypnotic, bass-heavy track layered with playful synths and chanting vocals, gained global traction after a collaboration with Bad Bunny and launched the group onto major stages like Lollapalooza. Chuwi’s music draws from Puerto Rico’s street-level party culture — think San Juan block parties, late-night dance circles and the communal energy of Caribbean festivals — while still feeling polished enough for global audiences. Onstage, this translates into a set packed with layered beats, call-and-response moments and nonstop movement that keeps the crowd locked in from start to finish. 7 p.m., The Beacham, 46 N. Socially conscious and challenging vocal ensemble Orlando Sings marks five years at this week’s Choral Festival with three separate concerts themed around “Tapestry: The Music of US.” Saturday’s “Voice & Flame” features the Solaria Singers performing pieces from points of upheaval throughout modern history, such as Poulenc’s “Figure Humaine,” written in Nazi-occupied France. Later that day, Harmonia presents “Stand Tall,” a musical history of the women’s suffrage movement including pieces from Alexandra Olsavsky, Andrea Ramsey and Rosephanye Powell. Finally on Tuesday, the Orlando Sings Symphonic Chorus celebrates 250 years of the United States with some essential nuance — in a year when a lot of us aren’t very jazzed about the grand ol’ flag — with works by Michael BussewitzQuarm and Brandon Boyd. cused on feminism, immigration and critiques of the Trump administration. Bee spent 12 years as a correspondent on The Daily Show before transitioning to Full Frontal With Samantha Bee, both masterclasses in political satire. After an extensive career in political comedy and commentary, Bee is now poking fun at the widespread lack of education about women’s health and menopause, which is neglected by American educators and American healthcare alike. Bee assures that, despite viewing menopause as a “volcanic disruption” in her life, it can be a hot flash of humor. 4 p.m. and 7 p.m., Alexis and Jim Pugh Theater at the Dr. Phillips Center, 445 S.
