» A fifth sloth rescued from Sloth World has died

After weeks of relatively positive updates from the Central Florida Zoo, Willow became the fifth sloth to die after being rescued from the never-opened Sloth World attraction in late April. The zoo’s rescue team announced last week that Willow’s health declined over the past several days, despite ongoing treatment. The veterinarian team made the decision to humanely euthanize her to prevent further suffering. “Our animal care teams devoted countless hours to providing compassionate care,” said CEO Richard Glover in a statement. “While this outcome is heartbreaking, we take comfort in knowing Willow received the highest level of care and support from a team that was fully committed to her well-being.” The Central Florida Zoo on April 24 received a total of 13 rescued sloths from the planned I-Drive “slotharium” Sloth World. They were placed under an initial 30-day quarantine. While all 13 survived the first two nights, five (Bandit, Habanero, Dumpling, Mr. Ginger and now Willow) have since died, despite the zoo’s efforts and continual care. The surviving sloths will continue to receive medical treatment and care as they remain in an extended quarantine.

» Patina Group ordered to provide back pay, job offer to wrongfully fired worker at Disney Springs restaurant

The Patina Group, a third-party restaurant operator at Disney Springs, has been ordered by the National Labor Relations Board to offer reinstatement and back pay to a worker the employer allegedly fired in retaliation for her union activity, in violation of federal labor law. The regional director for the NLRB issued the complaint containing the order on May 27 and the Patina Group issued a response on June 10 denying the allegations. A trial date for the case is set for Sept. 15. “For the last year and a half, I have been fighting. Now, this complaint makes me feel like it was worth it,” said Julie Ruiz, a cashier at the Patina-operated Pizza Ponte restaurant at Disney Springs who was fired in 2024. At the time, she was told she was being suspended (and shortly after fired) for wearing an earbud into work. Labor union Unite Here Local 737 helped Ruiz file an unfair labor practice complaint with the NLRB, accusing Patina of firing her in retaliation for being a public face in an ongoing effort to organize a union among Patina Group workers at Disney Springs. Ruiz had also spoken up publicly about experiencing sexual harassment on the job.

» The Patina Group also faced wage theft accusations by chefs at EPCOT The Patina Group last week was also accused of violating wage and hour laws at Tutto Italia, one of its restaurants at Disney’s EPCOT theme park in Central Florida. Four cooks at Tutto Italia, unionized with Unite Here Local 737, allege they were forced to perform off-the-clock, pre-shift prep work for years without being paid. Their legal counsel (Jose Javier Rodriguez, a labor rights attorney running for Florida Attorney General this fall) sent a letter to Patina Group, stating that the workers will move forward with filing suit against the company if Patina doesn’t pay them the money they’re owed. Based on rates of pay and how long the cooks were allegedly required to perform tasks off the clock, the workers are collectively seeking about $134,000, in addition to $7,700 for attorney’s fees. Sugarman, Susskind & Braswell P.A., the law firm representing the workers, has given the Patina Group a deadline of July 2 to send checks to their office for the four workers (ranging from $14K to $60.5K), plus a check to the law firm for attorneys’ fees.

» Leftover Disney property tax settlement money that had been set aside by schools could go to teachers Orange County Public Schools has set aside $119 million to settle lawsuits filed by Walt Disney World and other defendants over allegedly excessive property tax assessments, but some of that money could go back to teacher salaries if the final settlement ends up costing the district less. Dr. Maria Vazquez, superintendent for Orange County Public Schools, confirmed during a press conference on the district’s budget — when pressed by a reporter — that, should the final settlement for those lawsuits amount to less than what they’ve set aside, “Our goal is then to put those money, those dollars back into salaries.” According to Florida Politics, Disney has sued Orange County over its property tax assessments every year since 2015. The school district, which receives a sizable portion of its operating revenue from those assessments, has been setting aside funding each year to cover a settlement for those lawsuits, should Disney win its case.

» ICE claimed they’ve emptied ‘Alligator Alcatraz.’ Activists aren’t buying it Federal immigration authorities say they’ve emptied the so-called “Alligator Alcatraz” lockup in the Florida Everglades amid hurricane fears. They claim they’ve transferred detainees to other facilities. But advocacy groups suing the state aren’t buying their explanation. “They built it and filled it with people during the hurricane season last year, so that makes no sense,” argued attorney Paul Schwiep, who is representing the Friends of the Everglades in a suit to shutter the facility. “How stupid do they think we are?” Other environmental group representatives alleged that authorities lack transparency, pointing to WINK News’ recent report that Immigrations and Customs Enforcement employees and state officials had quietly moved detainees from the facility because of the hurricane season that began June 1. Jessica Natham, a nature enjoyer who said she frequents the area outside the center, said last week that the facility doesn’t look like it’s winding down. She reported seeing transport buses and vendors still on site, including jet fuel being brought onto the property. But ICE’s announcement (aside from its reasoning for emptying the center) wasn’t unexpected. For weeks, reports abounded that state and federal authorities planned to scale down operations, even though Gov. Ron DeSantis and the Department of Homeland Security insisted there were no “official” talks about shutting down. Neither ICE nor the governor’s office responded to questions about whether this is a permanent move.

THE BIG SQUEEZE

Burmese pythons are ‘a South Florida problem that is rapidly turning into a Central Florida problem’

According to the Bible, the world’s first con man was a snake. It deceived Adam and Eve, leading them to commit the first sin, which is how we wound up living in this

messed-up world we have now. I mention this because we’ve just come to the end of Florida’s annual official snake-snagging season. The state calls it the Florida Python Challenge, but I like

to call it “the Florida version of The Simpsons’ Whacking Day.” There’s even a documentary film about the hunt. (The Python Hunt, directed by Broward County native Xander Robin, screened last week at Enzian Theater.)

From July 10-19, professional and amateur snake-catchers invaded the South Florida swamps to beat the bushes for Burmese pythons — literally — vying to see how many “Burms” they can capture, motivated by the big-money prizes and extensive public attention. Last year’s contest drew a whacking great crowd: 934 contestants from 30 states and even Canada, who collected 294 pythons. A social media celebrity from Naples named Taylor Stanberry became the first female champ, winning the $10,000 first prize by catching 60 pythons.

Contrast this with a lower-profile pursuit that made news last week: Four biologists who

work for the Conservancy of Southwest Florida brought in 177 pythons weighing an eye-popping 8,080 pounds.

WINK-TV reported that that weight beat last year’s total by 2,000 pounds. “This was our first four-ton removal season,” said Ian Bartoszek, the wildlife biologist who is the conservancy’s science manager.

The celebrated state roundup tends to bring in snakes the size of sticks, but the Conservancy wrangles snakes as big around as entire trees. The Conservancy crew is the one that’s caught both the largest female python in the state (nearly 18 feet long, 215 pounds) and the largest male python (16 feet, 140 pounds). So far, though, nobody has handed them any $10,000 prize checks or filmed a documentary about them.

[continued from page 9]

Intrigued, I set up an interview with Bartoszek, and I’m glad I did. He’s as analytical as he is adventurous — and he delivered a sobering warning. “This is a South Florida problem,” he told me,“that is rapidly turning into a Central Florida problem.”

The real swamp

The first Burmese python turned up in the Everglades in 1979, but no state or federal official took the invasive snake problem seriously until the 2000s. Since then, their main response has been to dispatch armed hunters to kill as many as possible. Yee-haw!

That Wild West approach has seen only limited success, although our politicians keep doing their best to put on a happy face and declare “victory.”

In October, for instance, Gov. Ron DeSantis contended that by partnering with a company that turns python skin into belts and shoes, the state had tripled the number of pythons caught. He said the state’s partnership with the Miami company, Inversa, had “supercharged” the removal.

Actually, all it did was give the state’s poorly paid trappers a greater financial reward for catching snakes.

What DeSantis didn’t mention is that Inversa has a connection to his own political fortunes. Inversa’s parent company, Quintessence Marine, put $82,000 over the past year or so into a political committee controlled by a lobbying company named Capitol City Consulting, according to investigative journalist Jason Garcia.

The lobbyists use that political committee to make donations to the governor and legislators on behalf of their clients. That committee gave $60,000 to DeSantis’“Florida Freedom Fund” in January, Garcia told me. Quintessence Marine also lobbied the Legislature to boost state funding for python removal, he said.

The owner of Capitol City Consulting, incidentally, is Rodney Barreto. A developer, Barreto also serves as chairman of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, which runs the annual Python Challenge. And the top sponsor of the wildlife commission’s python hunt this year just happens to be Inversa.

Gee, maybe the real snake-infested swamp is the one in Tallahassee.

Anyway, you can see why I was eager to talk to an expert South Florida snake handler who’s not affiliated with this bunch.

No more monkey rodeo

The first time Bartoszek captured a python, he said, he’s glad no one took pictures or video. During the struggle, he split his pants at the crotch. This happened during Christmas week in 2012, he said. He and a state panther biologist were in Immokalee talking to farmworkers. Afterward, the two biologists asked the farm’s owner if they could roam around and look for pythons. Suit yourself, they were told.

They mounted all-terrain vehicles and took off down the levee. The panther biologist got about 100 yards in the lead, then stopped dead. Bartoszek saw him waving his arms but didn’t understand why until he’d pulled even.

Then he saw the 10-foot snake lying across the levee, clearly trying to avoid attracting notice. If it made it to a nearby canal, the snake would get away forever. Bartoszek leaped off the vehicle and wrapped his hands around the snake’s tail. He quickly learned that that’s the wrong end to grab. “What followed was 15 to 20 minutes of the most insane snake-wrestling monkey rodeo you’ve ever seen,” he told me.“I wound up on the ground, covered in mud and [snake] musk and with my pants ripped up. But I eventually got my boot on top and pinned the head.”

Now, when he and his team of biologists venture into the wilds of Southwest Florida, they are so well-coordinated that sometimes they don’t even need to speak, he said. Even though they’re often wrestling a snake so large it’s like a horror movie monster, they each know what role to play.

“It’s a well-oiled machine,” he told me. Often, after a smooth operation, he tells his teammates they remind him of the mercenaries on the old TV show The A-Team.

Of course, his most important teammates are the scout snakes.

A creepy cool nightmare

The first person I ever heard mention the use of scout snakes was a biologist named Frank Mazzotti, nicknamed “the Croc Doc.”

Mazzotti, one of the smartest scientists I’ve ever met, had for years specialized in studying Florida’s crocodile population. Florida is the only place in the world where alligators and crocodiles live together in peace — with each other, that is, not with us humans. But as invasive species have grown into a bigger and bigger threat, Mazzotti turned his attention to the reptiles moving in on Florida’s native species — pythons, iguanas, tegus and so forth. He told me he decided to try turning some pythons into scout snakes after learning of the success a Venezuelan biologist had with giant anacondas.

hunting their targets. They have now equipped a total of 40 snakes with tracking devices, then turned them loose during python mating season. The tagged snakes — bearing fluorescent orange tags and highly visible scale marks so no human hunter will take them out — follow the pheromones of fertile females. Their radio signals show the biologists where they’re headed. The scientists can then interrupt their reptilian get-down groove.

If you’re a sensitive soul, I do not encourage you to Google the term “mating ball,” but that’s what sometimes turns up. Two years ago, Bartoszek’s team located not one but two mating balls in one day. They captured 11 pythons, one of them more than 16 feet long. “It’s probably most people’s worst nightmare,” he told the Miami Herald, “but for us, it’s a good day. … Most would say it’s creepy, but it was creepy cool to see.”

Serial killer in action

What’s even creepier is what turns up when the Conservancy crew conducts a necropsy, the animal version of an autopsy. They cut open every snake to document what the pythons have been eating. The answer is: Everything.

Scientists have been monitoring the trail of DNA left behind by an organism in sources such as feces, mucus and shed skin. This “environmental DNA” trail has shown the pythons steadily moving northward, Bartoszek said.

“We’re seeing DNA hits well north of Lake Okeechobee,” he told me.

Maybe Disney World better rename Animal Kingdom “Snakeworld.” And put Mickey and Minnie in protective custody.

Don’t be like Adam and Eve

Over the years I have interviewed a lot of Florida python hunters. It started with Bobby Hill — no relation to the King of the Hill character. Hill was a laconic great-grandpa with a shotgun and a prodigious sense of smell. For years, he was the only state employee authorized to seek out and kill pythons. A veteran Florida outdoorsman and a longtime employee of the South Florida Water Management District, Hill could read the terrain, spot where a snake might be, then verify the hiding place by inhaling the telltale musky scent. “Once you smell it, you don’t forget it,” he told me. It was the longest sentence I ever heard him say.

Gee, maybe the real snake-infested swamp is the one in Tallahassee.

When Florida officials scheduled the first Python Challenge in 2013, which attracted some 1,500 publicity-hungry amateurs, Mazzotti took three of the live pythons that were turned in. He put tracking devices on them and turned them loose again. Hunters went straight past the tagged snakes, utterly oblivious. That’s how good pythons are at hiding.

That year, the Conservancy began using this “scout snakes” technique as its primary tool for

“We’ve documented 57 species of birds and 28 species of mammals,” Bartoszek told me. This verifies the findings of a 2012 study that Mazzotti worked on. That study found that in the areas of the Everglades where pythons proliferated, they had all but emptied the landscape like an overenthusiastic vacuum cleaner. The study found a 99% decrease in raccoons, a 98% drop in opossums, a 94% drop in white-tailed deer and an 87% drop in bobcats. Rabbits and foxes had entirely disappeared. White-tailed deer, the favorite prey of our state animal, the Florida panther, is a particularly big loss. One surprising fact that Bartoszek’s crew documented recently: For many female pythons that are about to lay eggs, their last meal is a white-tailed deer. Think of it as the python version of a Powerbar, boosting their energy and stamina ahead of the ordeal of producing offspring. At one point, the biologists even interrupted a female python halfway through swallowing a 77-pound deer. Bartoszek remembers thinking,“There’s our serial killer in action.”

What’s really disturbing, though, is how many big snakes they keep finding in the 200 square mile area they cover every year.

You would think, after all these years, the number of ginormous pythons would begin to taper off. Instead, the opposite is happening, Bartoszek said. He’s not happy about what that means.

“I’ve been doing this a long time,” he told me. “I’d like to see those numbers drop.”

One of the better-known hunters these days is Donna Kalil, who’s become a mentor to a lot of the other professional python catchers. She used to sell real estate. Now she wears a python-skin hat and calls herself a “python elimination specialist.” She also does cooking demonstrations with python meat and eggs. In 2017, the 5-foot10 Kalil became the first female python hunter hired by the South Florida Water Management District. She was going to try it for three months. Nine years later, she’s still at it. Some professional python hunters disdain the annual Python Challenge, but not Kalil. Last year, she won in the professional category for catching more snakes than any other pro — 56.

Competing in the contest “is how I got started in python catching,” she told me. “It’s a way of giving back to the community.” But except for the addition of scout snakes, python hunting has not progressed much beyond the Bobby Hill technique. Over the years, there’s been talk of miraculous technological solutions such as drone flights, phony pheromones and even robot rabbits. So far, Bartoszek said, not one has proven practical. That means we still depend on humans laying hands on these snakes as if it were some backwoods religious ritual. We should root for all of the dedicated python hunters, even the amateurs chasing a big cardboard check.

But don’t be like Adam and Eve. Don’t be fooled by all the hoopla when the annual Python Challenge rolls around. Remember which hunters are catching a lot of skinny tree branches, and which ones are bringing in the whole tree.

ALRIGHTY THEN!

Orlando-grown stand-up Jim Carrey Heather

Shaw is back in town for a homecoming gig

Ahometown hoot with homegrown roots, stand-up star Heather Shaw returns to an Orlando stage this week as part of a national tour.

Performing her first show in Orlando at the age of 25, Shaw got her start in crucial local proving grounds like Shit Sandwich at Bull & Bush and the competitive open mics at Austin’s Coffee. Her first show, an open mic night with Orlando laugh icon Preacher Lawson, garnered only a few audience members — and no laughs. Now, Shaw packs comedy clubs for 60 minutes of material.

Highlights of Shaw’s 11 years in stand-up include appearances on The Today Show, guest spots on podcasts like “Only Child” with Bob the Drag Queen and “The Good Guys” with Josh Peck, and a stand-up special Alright, See Ya!, released in May. Shaw has done plenty of voice-over work for animation, including We’re Going On a Bear Hunt and The Tiger Who Came to Tea. Her current tour, which includes a stop on Wednesday at Orlando’s

Funny Bone, features more personal material, with jokes and stories drawn from her personal life, including stories from her recent marriage to wife Lilly.

“It’s new marriage stuff, it’s stories from starting in Florida. I’ve got some good stories from starting comedy in Florida, which is always fun, and stories from the road,” Shaw says. “It’s exciting building up this hour.”

Crafting a set isn’t an easy task. Some jokes don’t necessarily stick their landing, but the seasoned comedian knows how to poke fun at failure. “If I bomb, I know how to make a joke about what we all just saw, which was a bomb,” Shaw says. “I like to call it out and kind of make fun of myself for it.”

Shaw gives a joke three chances to hit, and then it’s out. One audience may not enjoy a certain joke, but that same joke could hit a home run in the next city. Trying out new material is part of the recipe in perfecting a show, and Shaw is prepared to cook up something good.

Earlier sets leaned more toward general-audience jokes and pop culture, and it’s high time for a change for the comedian.

“My first hour was kind of goofy, and it was just a lot of jokes I wrote, not about me or my life,” Shaw said. “So this hour I’m trying to be more personal with it, things that are happening in my life, and while also putting in some things that are going on in the world, and kind of blending that together.”

Touring the U.S. consistently since 2023, Shaw grabs inspiration for jokes from the cities she’s traveled to and adventures on the road, with the occasional return to pop commentary.

“I mean, Tom Brady just came out with coconut water that he’s calling Good Nut, that’s insane,” Shaw jokes. “But there are always stories like that in sports or in pop culture, in whatever’s going on.”

The comedy isn’t done once she leaves the stage, though.“Heather Shaw Is Kidding” is an hour-long podcast with over 220 episodes and 100 bonus episodes, each featuring an improv session with Shaw. With bullet points written and ready, Shaw improvises jokes about hot topics in the news and shares stories from her life. “I like just ranting about mostly pop culture and what’s going on in the news,” Shaw says. “I don’t write beforehand, and it’s just good practice of improvising and writing on the spot and coming up with jokes and being funny in the moment for an hour. That’s what I like about the podcast is that I can just run.”

Shaw’s rise to fame comes from not only her humor, but also the inescapable fact that she shares

a striking resemblance to Jim Carrey, earning her the “Lesbian Jim Carrey” nickname from the internet. On TikTok, Shaw told the internet she was Carrey’s long-lost daughter, and fans loved it.

During COVID, Shaw grew bored at home in Orlando and turned to TikTok to get some laughs and start up a “family reunion” with Carrey.

“I was 8 when I first started hearing it,” Shaw says. “I just decided to convince TikTok that I was his long-lost daughter, and it worked.”

Shaw has no plans to stop doing comedy anytime soon. Continuing to work on and perfect her current set, she says it’ll be close to two years before it’s fully honed and road-tested. With plenty of tour dates and podcast appearances on the horizon, there are plenty of opportunities for Shaw to perfect new material. “I think it takes about a couple of years to make a really strong hour,” Shaw says. “And then I’ll make another special, and try to get into acting. I’m really open to anything. Adult film work. I’ll do it all.”

Here’s a look at two recent theme park updates that turned out far better than many fans expected

Two weeks ago, I reviewed the revamped flying theater attractions at EPCOT and SeaWorld, but those aren’t the only exciting recent updates inside Orlando’s theme parks. Here’s a look at two controversial changes that turned out far better than many fans may have expected.

Rock & Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets at Disney’s Hollywood Studios

You can count me among the multitudes of Muppet faithful who were fighting mad when Walt Disney World announced the demolition of Jim Henson’s final masterpiece, MuppetVision 3D, in favor of a Monsters Inc. area. Even the news that Kermit and co. would be evicting Aerosmith from their looping indoor coaster did little to assuage my disappointment. But while nothing will ever replace MuppetVision in my heart (except maybe a long-rumored VR version), now that Rock & Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets is open, I’m willing to declare it Disney’s best attraction makeover since California’s second-rate Tower of Terror was taken over by the Guardians of the Galaxy.

From the exterior, the updates to G-Force Records are confined to colorful repaints of the entrance’s iconic overhead convertible and oversized electric guitar, along with a wall of psychedelic posters, all pointing to the groovy influence of Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem, whose imminent concert is the ride’s new raison d’être. The too-short interior queue is where the fun begins, featuring a lengthy loop of side-splitting new Muppet skits starring everyone from Neil Patrick Harris to Danny Trejo, along with a display of authentic and replica musical instruments.

Rock & Roller Coaster’s recording-booth preshow, which was previously infamous for Steven

Tyler’s bored delivery and bawdy hand gesture, now stars a stunningly expressive animatronic Scooter. His motion-captured performance perfectly reproduces puppeteer David Rudman’s movements, and his reactions to the Mayhem’s antics on the super-sharp “window” screen are especially re-watchable, thanks to randomized variations for the video cameos. (Stay to the very end for Scooter’s exit and you can glimpse the robotic arm operating him.)

Between the framed photos and album covers on the walls and the salvaged props from past Muppet projects lining the path to the loading dock, there are more Easter eggs than you can count before even arriving at the LIMO (Lengthy Immediate Motion Object) trains. As for the coaster itself, the actual ride is essentially unchanged, but instead of “Walk This Way” or “Sweet Emotion,” you’ll be screaming along to Muppetized covers of Blur, Steppenwolf and Def Leppard. After blurring by black-lit signs for Pizzerizzo and World Wide Studios, you glide past the old show’s Statler and Waldorf figures — relocated, re-dressed and reciting newly recorded insults — before disembarking beneath the attraction’s best detail: Look above and behind you at the photo kiosks to see Jim Henson’s portrait still smiling down on his creations.

Celestial Park Open Hub at Epic Universe

One year after the debut of Epic Universe, Universal has begun experimenting with a polarizing potential adjustment at its newest park that has generated more views, likes and vitriolic comments than anything I’ve previously posted on my Instagram feed. Late last month, Premiere Orlando: The Ultimate Beauty Experience drew more than 54,500 beauty industry professionals to the Orange County Convention Center for the largest such gathering in the nation. The West Concourse was louder than any IAAPA Expo floor I’ve ever walked, and the fashions and hairstyles — not to mention the queues for product samples

— could give MegaCon a run for its money.

But the real reason I accepted a press pass was to be among the first guinea pigs to test the long-rumored “open hub” access to Epic Universe’s Celestial Park. Badge-wearing con attendees were allowed to park and enter after 5 p.m. for free, with new long-distance photo validation cameras positioned at the various world portals and ride entrances to prevent us from proceeding.“After more than 30 years in Orlando, it’s exciting to be able to offer our attendees a little extra magic during their time here,” said a Premiere spokesperson. “This offering for Premiere Orlando show passholders reflects the many relationships we’ve built throughout the community, and we’re thrilled to continue growing and creating unforgettable experiences for beauty professionals.”

Aside from some passholders who had to pause, the system allowed most guests to pass through smoothly, while the (hopefully temporary) stanchions employed are a minor mar on the otherwise immaculate aesthetics. Otherwise, the experiment didn’t appear to have any negative impact on paying park visitors — unlike the frequent private buyouts of Universal’s older parks, which typically must close early for regular guests — with only a tiny fraction of con attendees taking advantage of the opportunity.

Although I ached to board Stardust Racers, we were able to enjoy a full evening of eating, drinking, shopping and free live entertainment (shout-out to Plastered Owl’s talented dueling guitarists) before watching the closing fountain show. I’d return often to spend more time and money at Epic in the evenings, if it were an option. Based on surveys Universal sent out, it doesn’t look like an all-access annual pass to the whole park is in the cards anytime soon. So once the bugs are worked out with more corporate customers, I’d love to see this made available to onsite hotel guests and UOAPs — ASAP. skubersky@orlandoweekly.com

UNDER THE SONS

Nic & Luc All-Day Eatery by chef Leroy

Bautista serves cheffy spins on diner fare

For nearly 15 years, chef Leroy Bautista has been steadily growing the concept named after his two sons, Nic and Luc. What started out as a successful jam and preserves business in Miami grew into a scratch kitchen in Longwood serving handhelds, rice bowls and breakfast items. Now it’s blossomed into a downtown Orlando eatery — Nic & Luc’s All-Day Eatery — which, well, closes at 3 p.m. and is only open on weekdays. Chronometric incongruities aside, come 8 a.m., fresh pastries are laid out, Lavazza coffee is brewed and Bautista, in his crisp chef whites, patrols his pristine kitchen ready to serve suits inside the PNC Bank building. Yes, Nic & Luc’s sits on the ground floor of the bank’s glass-and-steel tower, but it’s becoming a draw for the flip-flopped and baseball-capped as well, and why not? The inviting space that once held the Daily News Deli & Grille is bathed in natural light and has a serene energy, thanks to floor-toceiling windows overlooking green spaces.

That light helped illuminate a thick, photo-worthy slab of challah French toast ($14), the result of an overnight soak in vanilla-bean custard before being browned in butter then baked. Bautista serves it with a house whipped cream and (real) maple syrup, but given his penchant

for preserves, we tacked on a superberry jam ($2), comprising strawberries, raspberries and blueberries, to enjoy with that enjoyable toast.

The French toast is a Nic & Luc’s fave, but when I ask Nic about his own favorite dish on the menu, he singles out the shrimp and grits ($18) as a must-have. Prior to starting Nic & Luc, Bautista was a corporate and executive chef in New Orleans and all but mastered the dish. Granted, it was born in the Lowcountry, but it’s become a NOLA staple and Bautista gives it a proper creolizing by sautéing the colossal buggers from the Gulf in a lot of Cajun butter and serving them over creamy stone-ground grits. You’d be hard-pressed to find a better version in this town.

There’s a limited daily production of prime rib dip ($18), so if it’s available, go for it — but know that the shaved meat in between slices of Olde Hearth’s baguette is out-of-the-fridge cold, so when the sandwich is dipped into warm jus, it creates a culinary dissonance. Not that my dining pal minded at all. A rustic potato salad was the perfect pairing.

Gym rats will undoubtedly gravitate toward the colorful and beautifully constructed rice bowl ($17). Of note is the bowl’s most important

201 E. Pine St. 407-237-7801 nicandluc.com

ingredient — the jasmine rice. The long grains are fluffy and separated, not dull and clumpy. Purple cabbage, shredded carrots, spicy chickpeas and kimchi occupy quadrants of the vessel around a sunny egg. Scallions, cilantro and mint provide bursts of brightness, with crushed peanuts adding a pleasant crunch.“I’d come back just for this,”says the pal about the meat-optional rice bowl, seconds before sinking his teeth into an enormous brown-butter chocolate chip cookie ($6). “This might be one of the best cookies I’ve ever had in Orlando,” he declares of the luxurious round. I wish I could say the same about the croissant ($5), which looked stunning but lacked any semblance of flakiness. Thick, not paper-thin layers, made this a weighty pastry, not a delicate one. So I indulged in a peach buttermilk donut muffin ($5.25) with my Americano — pass on the shelf-stable pods and ask for steamed milk if you so desire — while making mental notes on what to eat on my next visit. My mind settled on the fig and feta tartine ($15), pork and hash ($17) and Southern fried chicken po’boy ($16). The main hurdle here, of course, is getting people to come to this somewhat out-of-theway spot inside the PNC building. But once they do, Nic & Luc will make bank. fkara@orlandoweekly.com

COUCHSURFING

Streaming premieres you won’t want to miss this week.

Premieres Wednesday:

The American Experiment — I’ve always found it troubling that we refer to U.S. democracy as “the American experiment”; it seems like a sobering acknowledgment that a mere two centuries does not a success make. But what better title could there be for a docuseries that has historians and other very serious experts assessing the state of the nation as we prepare to hit 250? Unless we could use the words “farrago” or “fiasco,” of course. (Netflix)

Another Self — Fresh opportunities for personal growth await in Season 3 of the Turkish drama about lifelong friends on a path of spiritual renewal. Jesus, just having to write that made me want to crush a healing crystal with a Doc Marten. (Netflix)

Behind the Attraction — Season 3 of the docuseries that lifts the veil of Disney magic includes a

two-part episode about the company’s cruise lines. It had to be two parts, because you spend the first one under quarantine. (Disney+)

In the Hand of Dante — Julian Schnabel casts Oscar Isaac in an adaptation of the late Nick Tosches’ novel, in which the rock-criticturned-author depicted himself attempting to steal the original manuscript of Dante’s The Divine Comedy. That’s pretty high-tone for a guy who used to write for Creem; I can’t wait to see Bill Holdship kickbox Nic Cage for custody of the Magna Carta. (Netflix)

Wild Cherry — Straight from the BBC comes a mystery thriller series about a shocking scandal that separates the old guard of an affluent community from its nouveaux riche. I like to imagine this is what happens whenever somebody who’s new to The Villages tries to bedazzle their golf cart. (Paramount+)

The Doomies — French teens inadvertently expose their coastal town to an underlying supernatural evil in an animated comedy that could be the perfect remedy for anyone whose Stranger Things withdrawal wasn’t alleviated by Tales from the ’85 — or who’s still mourning that Buffy reboot that never got off the ground. “Ze Hellmouth, why does she smell like brie?” (Disney+)

Little Brother — Celebrity realtor John Cena has his hands full when his happy, successful life is invaded by the guy he was once paired with in a “big brother” mentorship program. Eric André plays the title role, although you’re forgiven if you’d have preferred a catch-up with that kid who needed Seann William Scott to teach him what “Love Gun” was about. (Netflix)

Notes From the Last Row — A frustrated South Korean novelist turned literature teacher becomes obsessed with a mysterious but promising student. And let’s hope the kid appreciates it, because the last time a writer tried to take him under his wing, it was Sean Connery, and all he could think to do was behead him with a bowler hat. (Netflix)

Premieres Thursday:

Avatar: The Last Airbender — With the Northern Water Tribe safe for the time being, Season 2 puts the onus on the Earth King to keep the Fire Nation at bay. Meanwhile, over on HBO, Questlove is ready to explain why this is all exactly as Maurice White foretold. (Netflix)

The Bear — The fifth and final season plays out in the aftermath of Carmy’s decision to quit the food industry, with Sydney, Richie and Natalie left to carry the burden of making the restaurant a success. I guess they could have just let it die, but when women outnumber the men two to one, you know they’re going to choose The Bear. (Hulu)

Premieres Friday:

Camp Snoopy — The funny-looking kid with the big nose and his friends head to Camp Spring Lake for a second season of fun activities, including building sandcastles and looking for “the elusive hedge toad.” Why do I get the feeling that’s something Marcy and Peppermint Patty wouldn’t have particular difficulty locating? (Apple TV)

Chris and Martina: The Final Set — Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova reflect on the four decades of friendship that were birthed by their famous tennis rivalry, and how they’ve grown closer over shared challenges. You know, like cancer and having to share ankle tape with trans women. (Netflix)

Would You Rather: Decide to Survive — Quandaries like “Would you rather fight one giant duck or 1,000 tiny ducks?” are among the challenges set out in a competition series populated by 10 of the U.K.’s top “digital influencers.” Speaking of which, would you rather slowly cut off the air supply to 10 digital influencers, or quickly cut off the air supply to 100? (Prime Video)

Premieres Saturday:

Lock Upp — The Indian competition show comes to Netflix for its second season, in which another group of celebrities is thrown in jail and forced to debase themselves for necessities like food and water. OK, for once this genre may be on to something. If somebody could get Josh Hokit turning tricks for smokes behind the walls of Alligator Alcatraz, I’d be calling for them to reopen that place right now. (Netflix)

Premieres Tuesday:

Louis CK: Ridiculous — Proving “Netflix Is a Joke” isn’t just some hollow slogan, they’re once again platforming the bishop-polisher and bonesaw apologist you can’t believe anyone is still interested in. But admit it: Somehow, you’re still sad they didn’t get Warner Bros. (Netflix)

Ruthless — Ruth (Melissa L. Williams) has risen to a position of prominence in the sex cult in Season 6, just as the feds are tightening the screws on the entire operation. Serves her right for trying to cut them out of the action! (Paramount+)

AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER (PHOTO COURTESY OF NETFLIX)

There’s no better way to unwind than Happy Hour at White Wolf Cafe. Join us Thursday through Saturday from 3 PM to 6 PM for bold flavors, hand-crafted bites, and half-off beer, wine, and liquor. With live music on Thursdays and Saturdays and a warm, welcoming vibe every night, we’re serving more than great deals— we’re serving good times.

THINK GLOBAL, RHYME LOCAL

Home-grown

hip-hop duo back together at Will’s Pub for the first time in nearly a decade

Joseph Hamoui, better known as hiphop producer Thanks Joey, tells Orlando Weekly that he still recalls the day Nikolai Paiva — Brazilian rap artist Niko Is — showed him his first rhyme.

“I think it was called ‘All My Hoes,’ something like that, and I’ve always been really critical, it’s like part of my nature,” Hamoui says. “So I was like, ‘It’s all right, it’s cool, but keep practicing,’ and then we would just hang out and start.”

Searching for his own unique flow early on, Paiva tells OW he would rap-battle in the highschool cafeteria and hallways, saying he was “pretty Eight Mile.” He remembers hanging with Hamoui when he showed Paiva a track that changed things forever: “Blueprint” by Jay-Z.

“It changed my life, and then we decided we wanted to do it,” Paiva says.“We didn’t even know

what we wanted to do, but we did it. We started making our own mixtapes and selling them $5 hand-to-hand in high school, and doing little parties. It was quite a time.”

The pair bonded over music all the way back in middle school, their music-making endeavors continued while students at Dr. Phillips High.

Hamoui said that what began as beatboxing along to Paiva’s schoolyard freestyles eventually became producing. Once Paiva’s rhymes improved, Hamoui knew it was time to figure out how to make a beat, something of a feat for a high-schooler 23 years ago. Hamoui says that they really had to figure it out from scratch.

“We started recording on cassette tapes, like we would just download beats off of Kazaa or Limewire or something, and then burn them to a CD, and then record them through a cassette,

and then record it into the boombox onto the cassette,” Hamoui says. “It was a whole process.”

Hamoui eventually downloaded FL Studio, the infamous FruityLoops, and started making beats. A Brazilian immigrant, Paiva had stacks of his mother’s Brazilian CDs for Hamoui to sample.

Paiva says that even with his East Coast flair, everything he does in music is influenced by his Brazilian heritage.

“I rap in Portuguese English, and English is my third language, it’s the language that really changed my life,” Paiva says. “I was born in Rio de Janeiro and then immigrated to Orlando, where it’s like one of the biggest concentrations of Brazilians, so that’s pretty crazy.”

Hamoui says that he fell down a Brazilian music rabbithole at a very young age because of Paiva, and that it was one of the first genres of music he ever sampled. Of Arabic descent and growing up on Fairuz and Biggie, Hamoui came to Florida with a love for Arabic music and New York hip-hop, genres that still greatly influence his production style. Artists at the time like Aaliyah and songs like “Big Pimpin’” may have dabbled with Arabic samples, but he didn’t see many doing the same with Brazilian tracks.

“For me it was like hip-hop was such a jazz-forward genre, sampling jazz music, and I wanted to do something different,” Hamoui says.

Speaking of something different, on Paiva’s first big tour (opening for left-field rap star Talib Kweli alongside adventurous MCs like Immortal

Technique, Chino and Excell), Paiva would hand out fruit at the shows, both as a symbolic gesture and way to stand out.

“It’s the fruits of my labor — rappetizers,” Paiva says. “I think music is food for thought, so I like to mix both.”

Paiva says it feels surreal to reunite onstage with Hamoui after so many years Thursday at Will’s Pub. The pair are headlining the Store Run rap festival with a lineup of local rap artists including Gabrielknowseverything, Creativangel, Skyler., Marcus Auraylius, Iampvyne, Nicey Most Likely, Rey Sparta and Cordero Eubanks.

“We literally started together, we changed the world together, we changed ourselves together, we traveled the world together. We released incredible music, and then he moved to Los Angeles,” Paiva says. “Life just happens when you’re busy making other plans, you know. So for this to happen is an incredible blessing. I’m super excited.”

LOCAL RELEASES

In both style and yield, Someday River has always flowed with ease. On par with the temperate roll of their atmospheric dream folk, the Orlando band’s output has historically been a trickle of singles. Their 12-year recording career has so far only produced three collections, with a recent one that’s the first in five years. But their new Wake Me Up Sometime EP justifies the wait. More than just Someday River’s latest, it’s possibly their greatest.

Their formula — melodic indie-folk rock with an airy pop core and soft psych edges — remains pleasingly unchanged. The quartet of Greyson Charnock (vocals, guitar, sampler/synth), Mike Scitney (drums), Robert Carter (bass, vocals) and Joseph Davoli (keys, synth, trumpet, glockenspiel) are a high-functioning unit who know how to stoke a sumptuous tapestry. These four new songs, however, are an exceptionally honed batch.

Someday River have always been adept at crafting atmosphere, but these are some of Charnock’s most evocative and memorable melodies to date. And the mild but massive dynamics are perhaps the band’s best sonic balance yet. That alluring synergy dazzles most in standout tracks “Wake Me Up Sometime” and “Letting Off Balloons,” which pack sweeping pop sighs as wide as the sky. Even the near-lullaby “Lemon Tree” carries an undercurrent that hints at vastness.

A lush mosaic of folk, pop and psych, the Wake Me Up Sometime EP is a beaming reminder of Someday River’s craft and ability. Even better, it looks like it’ll be followed up in short order by a live visual album that the band will roll out this summer. Moreover, Charnock also tells me that they’re already in the final stages of a full-length album planned for release late this year or early next.

But these are destinations. When you’re on Someday River, where the sound is itself a state of being, just bask in the journey. The Wake Me Up Sometime EP now streams everywhere. Next week, you can catch Someday River live when they perform with Young & Sick. (8 p.m. Thursday, July 2, Will’s Pub, $15-$20)

CONCERT PICKS THIS WEEK

The Treasury, The Shape, KT Kink, Earth Fault: This well-curated concert is a dark-dancing siren call for the true children of the night. Virginia industrialist The Treasury specializes in strikingly stern EBM kinetics that keep it raw and riveting. New Jersey post-punk goths The Shape, on the other hand, juice their shadowy drama with soaring melodies. The kindred native openers are synth-punk icon KT Kink and darkwave act

Earth Fault, both notable forces in the Orlando underground. All told, this will be a loaded nocturnal transmission of nerve and motion. (8 p.m. Thursday, June 25, Iron Cow, $10-$15)

Love, Lucerna, Descry, Evershock, Pure, Charles Noire: This homegrown lineup is yet another slice of Orlando’s exploding young shoegaze scene. Like much of their contemporaries, heavy gazers Love, Lucerna power their seductive fog with thick alt-rock thrust. And then there’s Descry, who — despite describing themselves with the cringey “sexgaze” — also deal in an impressively enthralling and hefty brand of neo-shoegaze. Rounding out the all-ages bill is a roster of emerging local acts including moody indie-rocker Charles Noire and alt-rock bands Evershock and Pure. (7 p.m. Monday, June 29, Will’s Pub, $11-$16)

Worm, Druid Lord, Pontifex: While the underlying wildness of Florida is a decidedly mixed sociocultural blessing, it can pay big artistic dividends. Take for instance theatrical South Florida black-metal act Worm, who are a prime specimen of our norm-smashing depravity. Their horror pulp fantasy is an affront to mainstream taste, the kind of pure excess and extremity that pushes symphonic black metal out to the brink of evil camp with haunted, Vincent Price-worthy castle sounds. This is some seriously outré shit here — outrageous enough, in fact, to attract Megadeth shredder Marty Friedman as first a fan and then a musical guest on Worm’s latest album, Necropalace. Opening are similarly menacing local bands Druid Lord and Pontifex. So let’s see how ace your corpse-paint game is. (7 p.m. Sunday, June 28, Conduit, $20) music@orlandoweekly.com

Thievery Corporation

We start with the obligatory reminder that a local couple actually lived out their marriage proposal during Thievery Corporation’s Orlando show back in 2024. So let that be a very potent pointer to expect the unexpected at this Brit electro-world music collective’s dance parties. The evergreen ensemble has long been blending

four-to-the-floor beats with grooves from around the world, delivering music encouraging sonic unity-through-dancefloor sweat of a type that is increasingly lost in a tech dystopia dedicated to keeping you isolated and staring at a phone. The band mark 30 years of that noble mission for this tour, a milestone custom-made for communal celebration. 6 p.m., The Plaza Live, 425 N. Marching Orders

Will’s Pub gets loud and rowdy for another installment of the Marching Orders punk and hardcore mini-fest this week. The weekend-long melee brings an army of regional — and beyond — musical mayhem-makers for the second year in a row. Last year’s inaugural showcase kicked off with some of the most buzzed-about names in East Coast punk and hardcore. This time around, we’ll see (and hear) even more new lineup additions, plus plenty of returning bands. Music kicks off Friday with Rosary, Shitstorm, Ideation, Coffee Stain, Destruct, Glue, Sociedad Bastarda and more. Saturday ushers in Chalice, Watts, Problem Child and Laughing Corpse, among others. Fucktoys

Maitland’s Enzian arthouse caps off their Pride month slate of programming with queer-cult hit Fucktoys this weekend. The 2025 film, a directorial debut for Annapurna Sriram (who also stars in the film), is an incredible combo of John Waters, retro erotic thrillers and supernatural symbolism.

The film was born out of Sriram’s intersecting desires to subvert the male gaze, play an iconic queer sexpot, express frustration with the Hollywood system and celebrate outsiders (per Deadline.com). A heady bill of fare for certain, but she’s pulled off that hat trick. Check out this one-night-only screening, where Sriram will be present to talk about the film and meet fans. Not to be missed. 9 p.m., Enzian Theater, 1300 S. Orlando Ave., Maitland, enzian.org, $13. — MM

Fenomenca

Fenomenca, an original musical and dance production, debuts in Orlando at the Dr. Phillips Center. The production tells the story of a young woman named Pastora, who escapes poverty in hopes of a better future and goes on a journey of transformation through flamenco, theater and music. Central Florida artist Daniela Perez wrote, directed and choreographed the entire production, which first premiered in Caracas, Venezuela, in 2017. The show promises a new take on flamenco, a kinetic and passionate art form that blends singing and expressive dancing to tell stories. Dancers from the local Flamenco Del Sur company bring Fenomenca to life, and it promises to be a fiery one. 8 p.m., Alexis & Jim Pugh Theater at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, 445 S. Meet Snow!

Snow (A489645) is 6 years old, small, calm and a bit on the shy side. She takes her time with people, and when she warms up, it’s usually to just one person. When she first arrived, she was extremely nervous and shut down. But over time, she started to let her personality shine through. Snow will do well in a home with another dog, as here at the shelter she gets along with them and shares her space readily. Snow will need an adopter with patience, who will not rush her into affection. Snow protects her heart, and will make a person earn her love. We know the right person for this sweet girl is out there somewhere. Let’s get her home.

Orange County Animal Services is located at 2769 Conroy Road in Orlando, near the Mall at Millenia. The shelter is open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. every day except Wednesday, when it’s open 2-6 p.m. For more information, please call 407-8363111 or visit ocnetpets.com.
