DeSantis quickly moved to designate ‘terrorist’ organizations; Florida blocked undocumented students from attending state colleges or taking the GED; a woman was killed by an alligator in the Little Big Econ River, and other news you may have missed last week.

» Civil rights group sued Florida officials for designating CAIR a terrorist org Hours after Gov. Ron DeSantis announced that the state would soon designate the Council on American Islamic Relations a domestic terrorist organization, the Muslim civil rights advocacy group filed a lawsuit in federal court challenging that designation as unconstitutional. It’s calling for an injunction to halt its enforcement. DeSantis made the announcement on the day a new law (HB 1471) went into effect empowering the head of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to label organizations as domestic or foreign terrorist groups on evidence of specific criteria, including engagement in terrorist activity as defined by Florida law. The governor also announced that Antifa and the Muslim Brotherhood had also been recommended by FDLE head Mark Glass to be designated domestic terrorist groups, as well as more than 90 groups to be designated foreign terrorist organizations. The ACLU, the ACLU of Florida, and the Southern Poverty Law Center are among the legal groups acting as counsel for CAIR and CAIR Florida in the case, which was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Florida in Tallahassee.
» Florida blocked undocumented immigrants from state colleges
The Florida Board of Education approved measures that will block undocumented students from attending state colleges and from taking the General Educational Development test. The boards of trustees of the state’s 28 public colleges will now be required to ensure all admitted students are citizens of the United States or lawfully present in the U.S., and undocumented immigrants will be blocked from adult general education programs in high schools and state colleges. Adult general education programs prepare those taking the GED exam for the equivalency of a high school diploma. All members of the board voted to approve except for Daniel Foganholi, who cast the lone nay vote. Foganholi, who was appointed to the board by Gov. Ron DeSantis in 2022, is a first-generation American. The state originally proposed these rules in April for approval in May, but those measures were postponed and taken off of the agenda until last week’s meeting, which was a conference call. Republican lawmakers have attempted several times to restrict the ability of undocumented immigrants to enroll in higher education institutions in Florida, but have failed as recently as the 2026 legislative session.
» Florida officials pushed police to step up immigration enforcement
Florida’s local law enforcement agencies have been required by state law to assist the federal government in immigration enforcement for over a year. But some agencies, including some of the largest sheriffs and police departments in the state, still aren’t participating. At a State Immigration Enforcement Council meeting last week, Florida’s top cops said some are barely cooperating or not engaging at all in President Donald Trump’s agenda, a priority supported and pushed by Gov. Ron DeSantis. Out of 394 law enforcement agencies in the state, 272 have active 287(g) task force officer agreements, according to data provided by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. Of the 272, 163 agencies are considered “active operational,” which means they have made one or more 287(g) arrests. The remaining 109 agencies have not yet made an arrest, according to the FDLE data. The council will send letters to law enforcement agencies urging them to comply with state law, assist the federal government in illegal immigration enforcement and report monthly data to FDLE.
» Newly effective Florida law requires restaurants to be upfront about mandatory fees
A new law approved by the Florida Legislature last year to increase transparency around restaurants’ hidden service charges took effect July 1. The law (SB 606), supported by the restaurant industry’s largest lobbying group, requires public food service establishments in Florida to “include notice” of any added operations charge to customers on their menu, website or mobile application where orders are placed, according to a bill summary prepared by the legislative staff. The term “operations charge” is defined as “an automatic fee or charge, other than a government-imposed tax, that a customer is required to pay in addition to the cost of the food and beverage purchased.” The notice of the added charge must be printed clearly on customers’ receipts, and must be listed out on separate lines for each added charge, as applicable — for instance, individual lines for automatic
gratuity, service charge and sales tax. On menus, the notice must clarify the percentage or amount of the added charge and its purpose. The new law also forbids establishments from printing this notice of the added charge in a font that is tinier (i.e., less readable and easier to miss) than the font size of other menu item descriptions or elements.
» A woman was killed by a gator in the Little Big Econ River
A woman died last week after being bitten by an alligator while she was swimming in the Econlockhatchee River in Seminole County, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The incident was the third recorded alligator bite in Central Florida over a one-week period. The FWC said the 31-year-old woman was swimming with friends in the river near the Barr Street Trailhead in the Little Big Econ State Forest around 1:30 p.m. last Sunday. She was brought to a hospital, where she later died from her injuries. The Seminole County Sheriff’s Office, the FWC and a contracted nuisance alligator trapper responded to the incident. FWC officers used a boat and UTV to search for the alligator on site for hours, the organization says. The FWC ultimately cleared the scene around 7:30 p.m. The park, it’s worth noting, does display signs warning visitors of alligators. Officials say that while attacks are rare, individuals should always take precautions. The FWC says people concerned about an alligator can call their Nuisance Alligator Hotline at 866-FWCGATOR (866-392-4286). A gator is generally considered a nuisance if it is at least 4 feet in length; if it is believed to pose a threat to people, pets or property; or if it is found somewhere it should not be, such as a swimming pool, home, garage, etc.

A NEW DEAL WITH ICE
The revised agreement limits how long the Orange County Jail is obligated to hold people for ICE while remaining compliant with state law
BY MCKENNA SCHUELER
Arevised agreement between Orange County and the federal government formally took effect Monday, June 29.
This agreement offers a higher reimbursement rate for the county to temporarily detain people in the Orange County Jail on behalf of federal agencies like the Drug Enforcement Administration — but notably, no longer U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Federal reimbursement for the county to hold federal inmates for up to 72 hours will increase from $88 per person per day, up to $125 per person, after nearly a year of negotiations with the U.S. Marshals Service.
Meanwhile, a separate agreement with ICE approved by county leaders last month now effectively limits how long the jail is obligated to detain people on a federal immigration hold, which are a civil (not criminal) offense.
A shift in agreements
Under the county’s old agreement with ICE, the Orange County Jail was obligated to temporarily hold people detained by federal immigration enforcement for up to 72 hours, although local immigration advocates said that, in practice, this limit was often extended or manipulated by federal agents through a practice of shuffling people in and out and back into the jail.
County corrections officials confirmed this was happening, and Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings consequently warned ICE to end this practice in early February, citing in part the exorbitant expense to county taxpayers: an estimated $180 per day per person to hold them in the local jail on behalf of the federal government.
“The lack of your ability to offer us a fair and reasonable rate of reimbursement within an exceptionally reasonable amount of time has put Orange County in a remarkable position,” Demings wrote in a Feb. 13 letter to U.S. Marshals Service, the federal agency that negotiates terms of the IGSA. The county first initiated talks for a higher reimbursement rate in August 2025.
Under the county’s new agreement with ICE, the jail may only hold ICE detainees for up to 48 hours.
The agreement, known as a basic ordering agreement, also stipulates that the county will receive $50 in reimbursement per person for that 48-hour period — although that may increase by $150 if the county applies for state grant money to assist.
County leaders believe the change — carving ICE out of the IGSA and establishing a BOA with ICE instead — will help reduce the jail population of ICE detainees, particularly those without outstanding criminal charges, as a legally permissible form of harm reduction.
From December 2024 to the end of 2025, the number of people held on average each day in the Orange County Jail on behalf of ICE with no local criminal charges increased 900 percent — from just nine people to 92. In January, that number shot up to an average daily population of 142.
traffic stops conducted by Florida Highway Patrol, according to state data.
The vast majority of people in ICE detention nationwide — about 70 percent — have no criminal convictions, according to the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse, a data distribution organization.
Complying with Florida law
The county said it is unable to restrict the detention of people without local criminal charges altogether.
“State law requires us to uniquely support ICE incarcerations, regardless of whether or not there are also state or local charges against the inmates,” a county spokesperson told OW.
Under state law, Orange County must have either a BOA or IGSA with ICE, as a jail operator, and demonstrate “best efforts” to support federal immigration enforcement.
County commissioners last year were threatened with forced removal from office by Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier, should the county show any form of resistance to cooperation with ICE.
Mayor Demings, a former candidate for Florida governor who recently suspended his campaign following a cancer diagnosis, said the shift to a BOA is “the result of this board’s action to maintain compliance with Florida law, while serving the best interests of the taxpayers of Orange County, surrounding our role in housing federal inmates.”
The county’s IGSA was first established with the U.S. Marshals Service decades ago to house federal inmates on behalf of federal agencies like the Drug Enforcement Administration and Federal Bureau of Investigations.
In 2011, the agreement was amended to include ICE.
ICE signed that agreement on June 4, a county spokesperson confirmed.
“This moment was made possible by more than a year of organizing, bringing together advocates, faith leaders, community organizations, and directly impacted families to demand change,” said Felipe Sousa-Lazaballet, executive director of the Hope CommUnity Center in Apopka, in a text to Orlando Weekly.
Sousa-Lazaballet is a formerly undocumented immigrant brought to the U.S. from Brazil as a child, who later benefited from the federal DACA program and today has permanent U.S. citizenship. He’s currently running for a seat in the Florida House.
“We were relentless,” Sousa-Lazaballet said of local advocacy efforts, “and this victory is a reminder that ordinary people can accomplish extraordinary things when they are guided by love and a shared vision for justice.”
Since February, however, the number of ICE detainees held in the jail without criminal charges has significantly declined, the Orlando Sentinel reported.
Danny Banks, public safety director for Orange County, confirmed that since county commissioners voted to change the county’s agreement with ICE on June 2, that number has continued to go down.
“Since the Orange County Board of County Commissioners endorsed the agreement on June 2, 2026, we have continued to see a consistently low number of ICE detainees housed at the Orange County Jail,” Banks said in a statement.
“We are encouraged by this trend and remain hopeful that these numbers will continue to stay low moving forward.”
As of last Tuesday morning, the jail had eight male ICE detainees without any local charges and zero women held solely on a federal immigration hold. Roughly 80 percent of federal immigration arrests that have occurred in Florida over the last year have occurred through
For more than a year, advocates with a grassroots group dubbed the Immigrants Are Welcome Here coalition — organized shortly after President Donald Trump returned to the White House in January 2025 — mobilized appearances at Orange County board meetings to advocate for the rights of immigrants held in the Orange County Jail.
This coalition of social justice organizations, immigrant rights groups and labor organizations urged commissioners to ensure due process for those detained and transparency for families who were being held, as the Trump administration quickly took action to deliver on the president’s commitment to conduct “largest deportation operation in American history.”
“This is an important step toward restoring trust between our immigrant communities and local government, strengthening due process, and ending the misuse of taxpayer dollars so those resources can be invested in urgent community needs like affordable housing,” Sousa-Lazaballet said.
“We are grateful to the County Commission for believing in our efforts and putting the well-being of their constituents first.”

Orlando designer Jeffrey Kelly reps the City Beautiful on latest season
BY MCKENNA FIORINO
With his signature silhouettes, Orlando designer Jeffrey Kelly Abess will be fashionably representing the City Beautiful on the upcoming season of popular reality competition Project Runway.
“We have so many talented people here, but for some reason, when you put them in a group with people from LA or New York, they’re automatically gonna have in their head, ‘Well, what is there in Florida? What is there in Orlando?’” Kelly says. “They didn’t know me at this point, walking into
of Project Runway
the competition, nobody knew me. Once they did get to know me, it was like, ‘Oh my god, you do all that and you live in Orlando?’”
Kelly is a self-taught designer renowned for snatched silhouettes and signature fit. He is the only employee of his Jeffrey Kelly Designs brand — although his partner, Eric, does help.
“I’ve always had a signature fit. I don’t see it, but people, when they see my things, before I even post it, are like,‘I know Jeffrey made that because it’s cut this way.’ I think the reason people recognize them
so easily is because I am a self-taught designer,” Kelly says.
Project Runway marks the first time that Kelly has really worked with other designers. To Kelly, it was like a whole new world. Contestants had interns assigned to them, but Kelly didn’t really understand what an intern would do. “I’ve never had that,” Kelly says. “And they didn’t believe me because they went to my page and were like, ‘There’s no way that you do that by yourself.’ But yeah, that’s literally my life.”
On top of working solo, a lot of his real-life commissions require quick turnarounds. And that includes designs for another reality flagship, RuPaul’s Drag Race, for contestants like Myki Meeks, Heidi N Closet and Jewels Sparkles. For many commissions, he gets two to three weeks to craft his intricate designs, some of which are finished without a fitting.
“I have become an expert at fit,” Kelly says. “If my clients are fit and I send them a garment, you

don’t have to pay $1,000 for a tailor to come in and have a fit session with you.”
All of these factors prepped the local designer for the fast-paced world of Project Runway, where turnaround time is usually one day. “In my heart, I never had a day where I was like, ‘I don’t think I can do that.’ I’m one of those people that this is my life every day. I am a one-day challenge kind of person because that’s what people hire me to do,”Kelly says.
One of the greatest strengths a designer can have on Project Runway is knowing their own skills and limitations. This is something Kelly knows very well. “I knew no matter what, I will have something and something good, ” Kelly says. “Even at 35 years old, just a few years ago, I wouldn’t think that confidently. But for some reason, in the last two years, I’ve gotten just more confident and assured because there’s nobody there to do that for me when I’m at home by myself. It’s just me on my machine.”
Another source of pride for Kelly is being a designer in Central Florida. Jeffrey Kelly Designs was started in Orlando in 2020. Kelly began making designs for a client list that included his good friend and Drag Race star Trinity the Tuck. “I did it, not really knowing anything,” Kelly says “It’s actually funny now that I think about it. The very same look I did for that aesthetic has carried through my brand.”
Although there is no shortage of talented creatives in Orlando, there are precious few stores for these creatives to shop at, especially since Joann Fabrics shut down. Despite that, Kelly creates all of his looks at his Central Florida home.On Project Runway, Kelly hopes to prove that it doesn’t matter if you come from a fashion capital and you don’t have the resources that someone else does. If you have a goal and a drive, you can make it — and that’s exactly what he did.
“I had so many opportunities to move to New York and LA and I said no because I like that about myself,” Kelly says. “I like that I live here and I can still do what everyone else does [and] more sometimes.”
Season 22 of Project Runway starts Thursday, July 9, with a two-episode premiere on the cable network Freeform. The episodes will be available to stream on Disney+ and Hulu the next day. This season is set to be the largest yet with 22 designers competing. To accommodate these 22 contestants, there is a brand-new workspace for them in Manhattan. Host Heidi Klum returns with Nina Garcia and Law Roach to judge the competition. This season the trio will be joined by the infamous Tyra Banks. Guest judges include celebrities like Nina Dobrev, Ice Spice and Winnie Harlow.
“I want Central Florida to be proud,” Kelly says. “Jeffrey Kelly Designs is representing Orlando 100 percent.”

To celebrate Dab Day, we took a field trip to AYR Wellness’ massive new all-indoor cultivation center in Ocala to sample the goods
Thanks to mainstream marijuanathemed marketing, even those who have never inhaled are now aware of 4/20, but celebrations of 7/10 (aka OIL Day or Dab Day) still remain largely confined to connoisseurs of cannabis concentrates. I’m first and foremost a fan of the full flower as found in nature, but it’s impossible to compete with THC extracts — especially in the form of 510 cartridges or disposable all-inone vaporizers — when it comes to convenience and discretion. With its potency and portability, it’s easy to understand why oil has exploded into a vital element of Florida’s medical marijuana industry, but with a vast variety of methods available for extraction, patients are learning that not all vapes are created equal.
Enter AYR (pronounced “air”) Wellness, a well-established multi-state medical marijuana operator that expanded into the Florida market in 2021 with their acquisition of Liberty Health Sciences. I patronized LHS a few times during my early days in the MMJ program, lured in by their low prices. But I soon found their Dompen brand of distillate-based vapes flavored with botanical terpenes to be the THC equivalent of Everclear with Kool-Aid: strong, sweet and certain to leave you with a headache.
After AYR took over, they introduced their Haze line of live resin extracts, an upgrade over distillate that uses native terps, but still extracted using harsh hydrocarbons; as well as Camino chews, which were my first (and remain my favorite) exposure to sleep-promoting CBN. However, the gold standard of live rosin remained beyond AYR’s grasp, in part because their plants were being grown at a hybrid indoor/outdoor greenhouse in Gainesville that didn’t produce the consistently high-quality bud required for expensive solventless extraction — which uses only
pressure and ice water instead of chemicals, preserving the plant’s natural terpene profile — to be profitable.
That all began to change late last year, when AYR opened their first-ever all-indoor cultivation center in Florida. In June, I drove two hours north to Ocala for a tour of the nearly 100,000-square-foot facility with Brett Sorauf, director of operations; Evan Agundez, senior cultivation manager; and Robert Vanisko, senior vice president of public affairs. Before inspecting the state-of-the-art growhouse, which occupies almost 50,000 square feet, we had to suit up hazmat-style in head-to-toe overalls in order to avoid contaminating any of the scores of strains of gorgeous green ganja arrayed in seemingly endless sustainably irrigated aisles, growing from clones to colas under optimized LED illumination. Sorauf says, “This facility has been a long time coming, and the intention that’s gone into it cannot be overstated. We brought in a whole new technique, lessons learned from the past, [and] new people are here.”
The fruits of AYR’s efforts can be found in their new Kynd flower, which is now exclusively grown in Ocala; the products that I sampled were a marked improvement over my prior experiences, particularly the Sugar Berry Scones, which manages to pack nearly 4% terpenes and over 31% THC into its lovely trichome-laden nuggets. That strain, along with fan favorites like Powdered Donuts, may soon be joined by OG Diablo, Mango Sapphire, Formula One or one of a dozen others that Agundez has added to AYR’s Kynd crop rotation, based on internal phenotype hunting.
Genetics is “something we’ve put a lot of effort into for the last couple years, and [we’ve] come

up with a much stronger program in terms of one keeping a lot of favorites consistent, but also rotating a lot of exciting and new things through,” says Vanisko. Unfortunately, old-school landrace sativas like I prefer are still rarely on the menu. “It’s difficult to grow them in commercial environments; they can just take an exorbitant amount of time to fully finish out to where they just honestly sometimes don’t even make economic sense,” Sorauf explains.
Oil is only as good as the flower that goes into it, so Kynd’s upgrade has carried over into the HZ line of live rosin AYR recently launched around this year’s 4/20. “In all markets we’re seeing patients mature towards these more sophisticated products, such as rosin,”says Sorauf.“It’s the purest form of the product and the plant that you could possibly have, and I think there absolutely are our patients that are looking for that.” After sampling a couple varieties of HZ, I can vouch for the gassy, juicy Mandarin Diesel’s well-balanced effects; and although I usually avoid disposable vapes for environmental reasons, I appreciate that AYR’s hardware has an inconspicuous soft-touch exterior with a ceramic core that resists overheating.
AYR is pairing the introduction of their leveled-up products with a roll-out of refreshed retail locations that started in Lakeland, along with improvements to their website promoting visibility of terpene information, in an effort to educate consumers out of chasing ever-higher THC percentages. That’s an uphill battle that I fully support, so after years of driving past their dispensaries, I’m finally giving AYR another look. “It is a night and day difference from what patients have experienced in the past,” promises Sorauf, “and the best is yet to come.”

GLAM FANTASIA
Style takes center stage at gorgeous Winter Garden hotspot Harlow Grove
BY MICHAEL MURPHY
Harlow Grove is one of those restaurants that fancies itself a concept — a lifestyle. You only need see “Whispering Angel rosé” peeking from its menu to grasp the lifestyle on offer, a slice of suburban glam fantasia populated by pretty people and wallpapered with panache. Unfortunately, you can’t eat the vibe. Located a short stroll from Plant Street in Winter Garden, Harlow Grove is the brainchild of Fort Lauderdale-based brand factory Knallhart Management Group, which also operates the nearby AJ’s Pizza Joint, Harrell’s, and The Whole Enchilada. So long, mom and pop — Winter Gardeners are now spending credits at the company store.
Despite local discontent with the economics spawning places like Harlow Grove (see: the recent disappearance of long-lived WG favorites), the restaurant is popular, and weekend tables are hard to come by. I get it. The two-story space is British Colonial meets postmodern gorgeous: a lively lounge and intimate mezzanine, an elevated terrace loved on by a neighboring live oak, an army of sharply uniformed staff. Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous. But gorgeous like a stage set. Like it shouldn’t be located on Main Street, but streaming on Netflix. Like an eerily frozen-faced Nicole Kidman might sidle
up to you at the bar and whisper unpalatable secrets in your ear.
Those secrets are revealed in the bill of fare — American in the most mundane of ways. Think room-service fusion. Think Thai noodle salad next to Caesar, demi-glace next to coconut curry, chicken tenders and filet mignon.
The wine list reads like a hospitality rider for Real Housewives: Santa Margherita pinot grigio, throwback fatties like ZD, obligatory Dom for the dumb-money set.
All of this is OK when done right. I’ll drink a glass of ZD with a crab cake — especially the crab cake ($24) at Harlow, our best bite of the night. Beautifully crisped, fat with clean crab, it was served atop a creamed corn that played the sweetest of second fiddles. It was an auspicious start brought to a halt by the arrival of gritty, suspect PEI mussels ($20) swimming in excessively lemony broth. Likewise, potato bisque ($10) disappointed, its tater base solely a vehicle for pungent, one-dimensional truffle with a texture approaching gloopy. Fifty-five dollars American is a big ask for steak frites. Granted, at 14 ounces, it’s a big plate. And while the sliced New York Strip passed the eye test, it was dry and chewy — sans signature marbling, thirsting for its sauce au poivre.
186 S. Main St., Winter Garden 352-995-2713 harlowgrovewg.com
By contrast, one glance at a rack of 24-hour “Signature Ribs” ($34) and the flavorful meat fell off the bone. Although let down by flat BBQ sauce, the ribs were enjoyed, as was lobster lasagna ($38) that ate as you might imagine: richly, with cosmetically charred pasta, béchamel, truffle, and Parmesan crispies for mouthfeel.
Desserts are big and sweet; there’s a range of well-made cocktails; and all things flow from a tightly orchestrated service dynamic. Though we were twice left without utensils, service is, generally, restaurant-group polished. The downside is it’s also performative — by meal’s end, we were exhausted from being talked to like babies and assured that everything on the menu is ah-mazing. Look, there are worse things than whiling away an evening in the swirl of rattan birds, designer handbags and wildlife statuary that is Harlow Grove. Serenaded by laughter and cocktail shakers, it would be easy to do as its branding suggests and #StayAwhile. And if quantity is your measure of value, you may find more of it than we did. But if you put food first, when plates arrive and break the atmospheric spell, you’ll find yourself seated in what seems an awful lot like a stylish, safari-themed Applebee’s. dining@orlandoweekly.com

Leading the lineup is the Strawberry Cheesecake Beignet, a sweet seasonal creation that combines the café’s signature beignets with flavors inspired by the classic dessert. Coffee lovers can enjoy the Banana Cream Latte, a smooth and nostalgic drink that tastes like summer in a cup.
For those looking to beat the Florida heat, the Mango Peach Refresher delivers a bright, fruity option that’s perfect for warm afternoons, while the Coconut Cream Matcha offers a refreshing blend of creamy coconut and matcha.
These seasonal offerings join a menu already filled with guest favorites. Beyond coffee and beig-
nets, visitors can enjoy breakfast sandwiches, specialty beverages, frozen drinks, refreshers, and savory options like the Honey Butter Chicken Croissant, a fan favorite that perfectly balances sweet and savory flavors.
And while the menu is what initially draws many guests in, the atmosphere is what often turns firsttime visitors into regulars.
With bright interiors, picture-perfect drinks, and fresh-made beignets arriving hot to the table, Beignets & Brew has become a favorite backdrop for coffee dates, catch-ups with friends, study sessions, and weekend outings. It’s the kind of place where guests can grab a quick coffee on the go or settle in and enjoy a slower pace for a while.
In a city with no shortage of coffee options, Beignets & Brew offers something a little different. It’s a place where handcrafted coffee meets made-toorder treats, where seasonal flavors keep the menu exciting, and where every visit feels like a chance to enjoy life’s sweeter moments.

I’m Not Afraid — A 10-year-old Mexican boy discovers another child is being held captive not far from where he lives, leading him to question the morals and motivations of his community. And also their business acumen, because how can a kid do a halfway decent job upholstering a Buick for you if he’s stuck in a hole in the ground? (Netflix)
Nothing to Lose — When her son is struck by a rare form of leukemia, a Belgian single mom will stop at nothing to find a bone marrow donor to save his life. Hey, I know a Mexican kid who isn’t going anywhere! (Netflix)
Salcedo, Leather, and Boogaloo — The Colombian series The First Time may have wrapped up after four seasons, but it lives on with this spinoff series, in which a normally aloof guy lets two dangerous women seduce him into a world of “salsa, secrets and temptation.” I mean, they could probably convince me too, depending on what flavor the salsa is. (Netflix)
Thunder 3 — A popular manga once again gets an anime adaptation, as three middle-school-
ers venture into the multiverse to locate the missing sister of one of them. In the best-case scenario, she’s found the One Piece; worst case, she’s sewing merch for the Saja Boys. (Netflix)
Trying — Adoptive parents Nikki and Jason have their hands full in Season 5, now that Princess and Tyler’s biological mother is on the scene to cause all manner of havoc. Honestly, all of this could have been avoided if they had just bought their kids on the dark web like we all wanted back in Season 3. (Apple TV)

The Five-Star Weekend — Jennifer Garner plays a celebrity chef who deals with the death of her husband by assembling a support group of friends who represent distinct periods in her life. The big reveal of this eight-episode series is the identity of the fifth and anonymous mystery guest; if I were the other four, I’d be hoping it isn’t a visitor from her days slinging meat pies on Fleet Street. Little House on the Prairie — This series reboot of the cloying 1970s show has a heck of a

Love Is Blind U.K.: After the Altar — Contestants from the show’s first two seasons reconvene in a three-episode special that centers on a party thrown for Kieran, whose relationship with Megan is the only success story of Season 2. Statistically, that means your average Brit is still likelier to make things work with a complete stranger than with a prime minister. (Netflix)
Married at First Sight — Season 20 pulls into Seattle to see if 14 of the locals can pair up successfully despite their first date being with the preacher. But as the pantheon of the region goes, that’s a lot more workable than a throuple with Courtney Love and a shotgun. (Peacock)

Joe Bob’s Savage Summer — Joe Bob Briggs gets closer to riding out his obligation to AMC and Shudder with the second of four seasonal specials, this one welcoming scream queen Felissa Rose as a guest. Prediction for one of the two featured flicks: I Spit on Your Contract. (AMC+ and Shudder)
Miguel Ángel Blanco: The 48 Hours That Changed Spain — Revisit the tense two days in 1997 when the Spanish public took to the streets to demand the release of a municipal politician who had been kidnapped by terrorists. Murder 101 — The podcast of the same name becomes a docuseries focused on a Tennessee high-school sociology teacher and his students who try to crack a series of unsolved killings. Quarterback — Speaking of the NFL, the four players spotlighted in Season 3 of this sports docuseries include the Bucs’ Baker Mayfield, who finished the 2025 season ranked No. 10 for passing yards. That means he was better at passing than the Bills’ Josh Allen but still significantly worse at it than Ariana Grande. (Netflix)
The Real Wolf of Wall Street — A three-part docuseries profiles the notorious true-life personage who inspired one of Leonardo DiCaprio’s most enduring portrayals. Trash Fest is grimier than ever with Tampa and Jacksonville incursions and a stacked lineup
BY ASA CARVAJAL
Trash Fest, an Orlando metal fest hosted by Orlando deathgrind band Trash Panda, is returning Friday, more ripe than ever — and not just to the City Beautiful this time, but for a very long and heavy weekend of Jacksonville and Tampa incursions.
What originally began as a one-night-only release show for filthy local metallers Trash Panda in 2023 has become a showcase for death- and grind-oriented bands in the Orlando scene. Now, for Trash Fest 4, the festival’s lineup is going on a Florida roadshow.
Anthony Roman, guitarist for headliners Trash
Panda and festival organizer, tells Orlando Weekly that Trash Panda’s uniquely Floridian spin on grind came naturally. He and his bandmates wanted to make a less cynical, comedic take on the oft-nihilistic metal genre, blending raccoon humor with heavy riffs and guttural screams to serve as a brief reprieve from the deteriorating state of the world.
“We wanted to do something that just seemed in bad taste at the time, because we didn’t know what the current state of the world was, or where it was going to be,” Roman says. “So we wanted to do something that was kind of a distraction
from that, something that was more fun, not as serious.”
All of Trash Panda’s lyrics are written from the POV of city-dwelling raccoons, living their best Southern lives eating garbage and swimming in dumpsters.
“I don’t know why, but it clicked pretty much immediately,” Roman admits. “It was very funny, and we wrote a song that day, and then we dropped it on the internet, and it was probably the easiest band that we’ve ever had to form.”
Trash Panda took just a month to finish their high-concept debut EP, Valley of Junk, and Roman says it got a surprising amount of attention considering the stinky subject matter, gaining more traction than any other project the group members have collectively or individually done up to that point
“So we just were like, ‘OK, I guess we’re doing Trash Panda now,’” Roman says.
As Trash Panda progresses, their schtick has become more socially aware, with added raccoon

lore: industrialization, out-of-control development and humans’ rank inability to take care of the planet have actually been benefiting the raccoons directly, and they now have plans to take over the world from the junkyard.
The band also uses death metal-style song titles that connect to the raccoon experience, like “Discovered in the Crawlspace,” “Maggot Bath” and “Tearing Through the Hefty Bags.”
“It’s been kind of building every time we do it, so we keep doing it and I’m very grateful for the opportunity to be able to keep doing it,” Roman says.
For this weekend of refuse, Trash Panda will be joined by Orlando death metal OGs Intoxicated, Florida death metal band Chaos Relic, newer Orlando deathcore act Bleed the Witch, Jacksonville slam-metal group Doublecrossed and death metal act Tombstoner, who are coming all the way from New York City.
Roman says he’s excited for festival-goers to headbang to Bleed the Witch. Their debut single dropped very recently and Roman thinks they are definitely someone to look out for on the bill.
Roman and his colleagues use the festival primarily to spotlight the local scene, but being able to bring Tombstoner in from NYC is a unique and welcome opportunity for all involved.
“I saw them play one time at Conduit, and they were phenomenal,” Roman says. “We reached out to them, and they were very excited to be able to join us.”
Trash Fest won’t just feature musical performances: The Tampa and Orlando shows will feature vendors selling gothic oddities, artwork, underground vinyl, rock collectibles, jewelry and more.
Roman, also a security guard at Conduit, says that metal shows are the ones he’s least worried about ruckus at when he’s on the clock. While stereotypes claim metalheads are world-hating, violent headbangers, Roman says they’re the nicest people you could ever meet.
Roman hopes to fight these stereotypes with the more lighthearted, jokey Trash Panda, which still features the same low-tuned, explosive riffs and growls of primo primal deathgrind. He wants to expand the scene’s reach with Trash Fest, exposing more to the dank depths of underground metal.
“We look scary, but we’re all great, well-tempered people that are there just because we love this crazy style of music,” Roman says. “I think the misconception is that we’re a little scary, a little cynical, we hate everything. It’s not necessarily the case. There’s a lot of love.”
Feel the love on Friday at Conduit. And don’t worry about the mess.

LOCAL RELEASES
The idea of a concept band packs many connotations, most of them highbrow. But with new Central Florida punk trio Unholy Rodents, you’d be wrong. Predicated on a demonic squirrel schtick that defines their entire identity, they’re about as intellectual as Tampa’s WolfFace — who, by the way, all perform dressed like Michael J. Fox’s Teen Wolf. Just like Wolf-Face, however, this does not preclude them from being some sort of brilliant.
The three-piece scurry of vocalist-bassist Squirrel Goddammit, guitarist Blind Squirrel and drummer Anti-Squirrel call their music “squirrelcore” and perform wearing horror squirrel masks. While that concept may not necessarily suggest depth, it does prove some wicked guile. Now, the young group are emerging to infect our scene with their very particular breed of punk-rock pestilence.
From their Lake County origins, Unholy Rodents are beginning to creep into the metro with some live shows, including one this weekend. They’re also coming armed with new debut LP Verminous. With songs like “Satanic Squirrels That Love to Sin,” “Fuck Animal Control” and “Get the Fuck Out of My Tree,” the album is a 10-pack of hardcore songs mostly involving squirrels — so, fair enough, squirrelcore. For a fledgling group that’s also a novelty act, Verminous is an introduction that’s probably more than you would, and probably should, expect from a comedy band. In fact, forget that apologist disclaimer. This record is a scorcher. Unholy Rodents are a band that shoot it deadly straight. No experimental detours or arty flourishes, just head-on hardcore that makes Verminous a bolt of high-velocity punk rock built for the pit. There are a couple of surprise ska breakdowns on “No One Cares” and “Jeff (the Squirrel)
Orlando’s Unholy Rodents are a band that shoot it deadly straight. No experimental detours or arty flourishes, just head-on hardcore that makes new record Verminous high-velocity punk rock built for the pit
Goddammit” that could qualify as comedic relief. But, otherwise, fast and furious is the mode with storming guitars, barreling beats and confrontational shouts. It’s classic anti-establishment punk rock done with fidelity, fire and, OK, fur.
Unholy Rodents may be a novelty act, but they’re no joke. This debut album is a funny but fierce blast. So gird your loins and your bird feeders alike — these squirrel nut rippers are coming. Verminous now streams everywhere, and this weekend you can catch the disease live when Unholy Rodents play at Sanford Punk Night with Swift Knuckle Solution, No Allies, Best Days Behind and Steve Osborne. CONCERT PICKS THIS WEEK
Catnap, Bellicosa, Zozingbo, S.M.O.P., Harwick: Perhaps no bill this week will be as
wide a slice of Orlando’s rising rock class than this next-gen lineup. Indie rockers Catnap and riot grrrls S.M.O.P. have been rocketing in the local scene lately, but this will be a good look at a broader carousel of nascent young native acts that includes alt-rock band Bellicosa, poet pop-rocker Zozingbo and emotional rockers Harwick. It’ll be a peek into the near-future of Orlando indie rock. (7 p.m. Thursday, July 9, Will’s Pub, $15-$20)
Jalen Baker Quartet: Like guitars in rock, horns get all the spotlight in jazz. Rightful in some ways, but also very reductively wrong. Young composer and bandleader Jalen Baker is making the case for the vibraphone with modern jazz that spotlights the rich, expressive instrument as not just a vibey element but a leading light. More than that, he also wields his music with cultural intent. His quartet’s show will be an advance peek at Baker’s upcoming new album, RePaved, which is both a mirror and celebration of the historical Third, Fourth and Fifth Wards of his native Houston. (7 p.m. Thursday, July 9, Judson’s Live, $35.11-$58.71)
Indorphine, Gargamel!, Ignid: For all you local-music buffs and weirdo headbangers alike, this momentous show is a blast from Orlando’s colorful freak-metal past. Early 2000s local alt-metal stars Indorphine are celebrating the 20th anniversary of their breakout album Glowsticks for Clubbing Baby Seals, which is a post-Primus clinic in technical nü-metal fury and screwball sensibilities. The show will feature a full live run-through of the album. The historical bill also features likeminded predecessors Gargamel! and the reunion of Ignid. It’s gonna get twisted. Tori Amos
Tori Amos first beguiled Orlando when she swept into town on the headwinds of game-changing record Little Earthquakes in 1992, almost 35 years ago. This week she returns, like an avenging prophet, this time to the Walt Disney Theater at the Dr. Phillips Center — as a much-needed balm to a hellish year. Happy news to devotees who have been waiting patiently. Amos comes armed with songs from a fantastical 18th album, The Times of Dragons, a keening voice untouched by time and haunting piano chords. This latest “cross-country road movie for the mind” addresses a lot of what’s going on all around us (waves arms wildly until they fall off) and will no doubt feature in the night, but you’ll still hear the treasured hits and melodic confidences shared between Amos and her fanbase all these many years. (You very well may hear “Cornflake Girl!”) 7:30 p.m., Walt Disney Theater at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, 445 S. Magnolia Ave., drphillipscenter.org, $58-$282.

In a harmonious knot of collaborations, Orlandobased publishing house Burrow Press and the Casselberry Sculpture House team up to debut The Mother Game, which is the result(s) of a collaboration between photographer Kat Shannon and visual artist Luca Molnar. The Mother Game is both an exhibition of works from Molnar and Shannon and a book collecting many of those works from Burrow — both debuting Friday. The book is the first in a series of collaborative art books from Burrow, and the exhibition will feature site-specific works created independently of the book project. The undertaking sees the duo “play with existing and invented game structures to examine notions of maternity.” 6 p.m.,

Godfrey
With impressions so spot-on, you might not be able to tell the man behind the voice is acclaimed Nigerian comedian, actor and writer Godfrey. And he’s coming to Orlando for a four-show special on his most recent tour. Godfrey’s career started in Chicago at the All Jokes Aside comedy club during the 1990s. The comedian then moved to New York, where he made the rounds at Comic Strip Live and Caroline’s on Broadway and began working in television. Godfrey has made special appearances in animated series, movies and game shows, including Zoolander, Soul Plane, The Mr. Men Show and Steven Universe. Godfrey’s stand-up features impersonations, storytelling and dissections of cultural stereotypes, exploring what it’s like to be Black in America. In addition to stand-up, Godfrey regularly hosts a podcast called “In Godfrey We Trust,” which invites some of his friends and guests in the industry to talk about pop culture, current events and race. His latest comedy special, Rebel With a Cause, features bold and transparent storytelling and, yes, impersonations. Urinetown: The Musical
The average person uses the bathroom six to eight times a day. Now, imagine a world where you had to pay to pee. Urinetown is a satirical comedy that tells a tale of capitalism, environmental crises and populism through the complicated plumbing of toilets. The musical takes viewers into a city where private toilets are no longer allowed, and using a restroom is a privilege that needs to be paid for — unless you wish to take a trip to Urinetown. Since debuting off-Broadway in 2001, the musical has been performed 965 times and has won three Tony Awards, along with a slew of other honors. Staged by Kissimmee’s Osceola Arts at the Dr. Phil, Urinetown is an engrossing example of how satire provides insight into real-world problems — but don’t worry, restrooms will be available all evening at no extra cost. Parking, on the other hand …. Various times, Alexis & Jim Pugh Theater at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, 445 S. Magnolia Ave., drphillipscenter.org, $59-$65. — PB

those jokes sure hit — Gonzalez was the first Latin American immigrant to perform stand-up on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert and a finalist in New York’s Funniest Comedian contest in 2019. Gonzalez uses his comedy to defy stereotypes and challenge the audience preconceptions, building bridges in times of extreme political polarization. Gonzalez will be performing in his native tongue on this tour, connecting further to immigrants like himself not just through his comedy, but through language. He’s coming to the Timucua Arts Foundation, a suitably intimate and homey destination for this singular voice. 7:30 p.m., Timucua Arts Foundation, 2000

Feeble Little Horse
Leftfield Pittsburgh indie-rockers Feeble Little Horse released Bitknot this year, a surprise third album after an even more surprising hiatus. The album’s art and title are based on the coincident-current core memory matrix, used in older computers to store memory through ones and zeroes. “Each core, or ‘bit,’ is accessed through
the grid of wires, like a knot that stores secret details and memories,” the band explained. While retaining their signature lively, glitchy sound, this album packs a far heavier and noisier punch. The drums are quick, with unpredictable yet precise fills that complement the textures of the grungy guitar and hyper-pop textures. Even with this grittier distortion, the production is surprisingly crisp enough to be preferable for headphones immersion. Catch them at the Social on their Bitknot tour with digital slacker-rock band Computerwife to experience these mind-bending sounds live. 7 p.m., The Social, 46 N. To save their historic home, Walter and friends reunite Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Gonzo and the rest of
the gang for one last all-star telethon. Thursday 11:30 am; Enzian Theater, 1300 S. Orlando Ave., Maitland; $11.50; 407-629-1088; enzian.org.
Silents Synced: Pearl Jam vs. A Woman of the World Screening as part of Music Mondays, the latest Silents Synced installment is a genre-bending mashup of silent cinema and alt-grunge. Celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, A Woman of the World (1925) follows a liberal European countess, played by Pola Negri, who scandalizes a small, mid-Western American town with her unapologetic independence, sharp wit, and tattooed arm. Pearl Jam’s raw energy and urgent, emotional soundscape mirror the countess’ defiance and vulnerability, bringing a gritty new layer to this 100-year-old film. Monday 6:30 pm; Enzian Theater, 1300 S. Orlando Ave., Maitland; $13; 407-6291088; enzian.org.
