Florida death row inmate made a final wish for DeSantis to watch his execution
Death row inmate Dennis Michael Sochor, who was convicted of strangling an 18-year-old woman he met at a New Year’s celebration in a Broward County bar 44 years ago, made a final request for Gov. Ron DeSantis to have a front-row seat to his execution on July 14 at Florida State Prison. If Sochor’s execution takes place as scheduled, he will be the 10th person executed by the state of Florida this year, and the 29th since January 2025 — more than any other state in the nation. Founder of the Execution Intervention Project and Sochor’s spiritual adviser, the Rev. Jeff Hood, said that his odd final ask was in the hopes that DeSantis would rethink the pace and manner he is handling executions in Florida. “We know that these executions are taking place at an enormous clip,” Hood said last Friday. “We know that Gov. DeSantis is continually signing [death] warrants … and so I think it’s important to point out that his pen is a weapon and he is firing it indiscriminately.”

Ocoee imposed speed limit and new rules for e-bikes and scooters
The Orange County Library System is poised to begin an $18 million renovation at the Orlando Public Library downtown in a couple of months. The Orlando Business Journal reported that the renovation project includes new front doors, lighting upgrades, and sundry tech and equipment upgrades with a particular focus on the first floor of the library to create “a more welcoming and engaging experience for everyone who visits.” The plan is to drastically revamp the entry level to make it feel more open. This renovation includes expansion and relocation of the Children’s library, new public meeting rooms, relocation of the Teen/Young Adult Library to the second floor, relocated book-display areas, and the aforementioned lighting and front-door upgrades. More detailed renovation plans will be revealed on July 23, with construction expected to begin in September and take roughly two years to complete.

Lawsuit alleged Byron Donalds threatened a Florida school board member in 2022
The Byron Donalds campaign played down a lawsuit filed by a Collier County school board member accusing him of threatening and intimidating her during a confrontation at a Naples grocery store in 2022. Kelly Mason was elected to the Collier County School Board in November 2022. In August of the same year, she was involved in a heated verbal exchange with Donalds that a member of his staff captured on video and shared with a Fort Myers news station weeks later. Mason alleges in her legal complaint that Donalds, front-runner for the Republican nomination for governor of Florida, confronted her at the grocery store over litigation that she had been involved in against himself and his wife, Erika Donalds. Mason alleged in her lawsuit that Byron Donalds “berated and insulted her and insisted that he could ‘crush’ or ‘finish’ her” during that confrontation. She also alleged that Donalds’ senior adviser, Larry Wilcoxson, “pursued Plaintiff through the store while yelling and creating a public disturbance.” The Donald campaign is slamming the lawsuit as politically motivated, as it comes less than six weeks before Florida Republicans go to the polls to decide on their candidate for governor. Donalds is dominating the race in both public opinion polls and fundraising. “This is a baseless, politically motivated attack and shameful publicity stunt designed to damage Byron Donalds in the 2026 election,” said communications director Gates McGavick. “This individual has a long history of unsuccessful litigation against the Donalds family. Floridians deserve better news coverage than lazy reprints of a tabloid.”
If Florida doesn’t lower its SNAP error rates, the state could have to pay as much as $1 billion to continue to participate in the federal food security program. Florida Democratic Party Chair Nikki Fried last week said the high error rate might not be due to mundane mistakes, but a tactic to limit participation in the federal benefit program. Fried has no proof of the allegations. Payment error rates measure the accuracy of each state’s eligibility and benefit determinations. Error rates include overpayments and underpayments. Newly released data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture showed that Florida’s SNAP error rate for fiscal year 2025 was 12.97%, above the national rate of 10.2% and so high it could put Florida on the hook to, for the first time, contribute to food costs for the program. Fried tussled with DeSantis after he opted not to sign up for $820 million in federal food aid for children in 2021. Fried and other Democrats at the time protested, and Florida was the only state at the time that didn’t apply for the money. While still high, the 12.97% error rate is a reduction from last year’s 15.1% payment error rate. A small city west of Orlando became the latest in Central Florida to adopt new rules and regulations for e-bikes and scooters to improve roadway safety in light of rising accidents related to micromobility devices. The ordinance includes a 10-mile-per-hour speed limit for micromobility devices on sidewalks or within 50 feet of pedestrians and requires riders to travel in the same direction as vehicular traffic when using the device on a street. The ordinance also prevents any sort of “stunt riding” or racing, including on sidewalks, in parks and in public parking lots. The Ocoee City Commission unanimously approved the new rules last week during a second reading of the city ordinance, with commissioner Richard Firstner absent. Florida law currently has no minimum age requirement for riding e-bikes and e-scooters, even if riders are traveling on public roadways. State law also doesn’t require riders to have a vehicular license or have insurance for their electric micromobility devices, and helmets are only required by law for riders under 18. The security guards that keep SeaWorld visitors safe unionized last year to address low pay, understaffing and safety for themselves as well BY MCKENNA S CH U EL ER
A
nthony Ella has worked security at SeaWorld for about a decade, typically working night shifts, where his greatest responsibility is keeping tabs on the aquatic park’s animals. During the day, security guards screen visitors to the world-renowned park, which is perhaps most well known for its up-close animal interactions and shows. Security guards handle domestic disputes, help lost kids find their parents and help SeaWorld’s contractors get through secure areas of the park accessible only by a security key. At night, though, Ella said that security guards are the only staff at SeaWorld who are checking in on the park’s beloved captive animals, including some of the more dangerous creatures. “You’d be the one person there with killer whales. No trainer in sight,” said Ella, who is using a pseudonym to protect his identity due to fear of retaliation for speaking up. “To me, that’s like, hazardous.” As a former member of the U.S. Army and a combat veteran, Ella knows safety hazards. He told Orlando Weekly he served during the U.S.-Iraq War and was deployed to dangerous conditions overseas. A security job afterward felt like a good fit. “I can see things that people don’t see,” he said. “I just have the spirit to take care of people.” But at SeaWorld, the low pay for security guards — $16.50 an hour — makes it difficult for the company to recruit and retain trained officers. The last time guards received a raise was six years ago — a consolation prize provided by SeaWorld after the guards first attempted to unionize during the COVID-19 pandemic. “They said,‘Oh, we’re gonna treat you better. We’re gonna, you know, make your jobs safer, have better equipment,’” Ella recalled management telling them. “But since then, nothing.” The stagnant pay and difficulty with retention, he said, has led to understaffing and has thereby increased safety risks not only for visitors to the park, but also for the guards themselves. “Our supervisor is getting strung out because we just don’t have enough bodies, and we’re worried that, you know, a mistake is going to happen.” Michelle Smith, a fellow security guard, said guards who are forced to pick up the slack are “basically doing the job of two people, and
you’re only getting paid one salary.” Smith is also using a pseudonym to protect her identity due to fear of retaliation. Although firing, disciplining or otherwise retaliating against workers for advocating for better wages or working conditions is unlawful under the National Labor Relations Act, research has found that nearly one-third of employers involved in union drives do so anyway. When SeaWorld security guards voted against forming a union in 2020, Smith said, it was in part because SeaWorld claimed that, if a union were involved, SeaWorld wouldn’t be able to give the guards a raise that management purportedly wanted to give them. Withholding changes in wages during a union organizing campaign “that would have been made had the union not been on the scene” is also considered a violation of federal labor law, according to the National Labor Relations Board, “unless you make clear to employees that the change will occur whether or not they select the union.” The guards, unsatisfied with their working conditions, again petitioned the federal labor board for an election to unionize with the Security, Police and Fire Professionals of America last year. This second time, they were successful. They became the first group of workers in SeaWorld Orlando’s history to vote in favor of forming a union — but since then, Ella said the company has played hardball. “They were upset, they started firing a lot of people, they brought in a whole different management,” he alleged. The popular Orlando park has gone through three security directors in the past six months alone, he added. Orlando Weekly reached out to SeaWorld to seek responses to a list of allegations made by their guards, including safety concerns and allegedly unlawful firings of guards in retaliation for their organizing activity. Neither SeaWorld nor its parent company responded to the Weekly’s inquiry ahead of publication. To the chagrin of guards like Smith and Ella, SeaWorld has also refused to negotiate a collective bargaining agreement with their union. The union filed an unfair labor practice complaint over the issue with the National Labor Relations Board last August, alleging badfaith bargaining, but a union representative
confirmed the case remains ongoing. According to labor researchers, it can take years for unfair labor practice cases — essentially, allegations of violating federal labor law — to reach a resolution, giving employers ample time to delay contract talks and disintegrate the morale of union members in the meantime. Under the Trump administration, the Center for American Progress found that dismissals of such cases have surged. Employers opposed to unionizing efforts have also been known to surreptitiously, if illegally persuade workers into decertifying their unions. Anti-union legal defense organizations such as the National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation — funded in part by billionaires — also commonly offer assistance for workers to get rid of their unions. Ella said he knows SeaWorld has the money to negotiate a union contract capable of offering security guards higher pay. SeaWorld is part of a booming tourism industry in Central Florida that generates tens of billions of dollars in economic impact in the region each year. “I do my research,” he said. “SeaWorld has been giving stock buybacks, millions of dollars.” Indeed, in 2025, United Parks & Resorts — SeaWorld’s parent company — announced $500 million in stock buybacks for its stockholders, citing a “strong balance sheet.” United Parks & Resorts boasts a portfolio of 13 theme parks they own or license across the U.S. and Abu Dhabi, including SeaWorld, Busch Gardens, Discovery Cove, Aquatica and Adventure Island. Maintenance divers at Discovery Cove, whose tasks include cleaning the park’s tanks and pools, also voted to unionize last year. They’ve similarly faced pushback from their employer and have filed complaints with the federal labor board, alleging bad-faith bargaining and unlawful discipline against pro-union workers. “These workers deserve better,” said Mike Smith, an organizer with the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 30, the union that represents the divers. SeaWorld Orlando itself has faced plenty of scrutiny over accusations of animal abuse, controversial attractions, alleged disability rights violations, and federal investigations into workplace injuries and the death of 40 year-old trainer Dawn Brancheau, who perished in 2010
after being dragged into a tank and battered by a massive male orca. “It’s not a secret; everybody’s concerned about how SeaWorld treats the animals,” Ella noted. “But it’s like, no one cares about the actual people that work there.” Both Smith and Ella said that some of their co-workers sleep in their cars or live in motels, because they can’t afford to live in the expensive Orlando metro, even working as guards at the park full-time. A union representative for the Security, Police and Fire Professionals of America — which also represents security guards at Disney — told Orlando Weekly that the minimum pay for security guards there is $23 under their union contract. “We have not been provided a decent living wage for all the work they’re piling up on top of us, and everything they expect from security,” said Smith. “We’re short-staffed, we’re overworked, we’re underpaid, and we have been for quite some time.” SeaWorld’s refusal to negotiate with the union “is very hurtful,” she added.“And it shows that they don’t care about their co-workers. They just care about the bottom line.” According to the SPFPA union rep — who requested their name not be included in our story — SeaWorld recently joined a host of other high-profile companies, such as Amazon and Trader Joe’s, that are claiming the nearly-century-old NLRB is unconstitutional. All of these companies have faced or are currently facing complaints of violating federal labor law, including violations of workers’ right to organize a union. In Central Florida, a restaurant operator for Disney World, the Patina Group, also recently rejected orders from the NLRB to rehire an unlawfully fired worker by disputing the labor board’s constitutionality. Ella believes SeaWorld’s lack of interest in negotiation is meant to deter other workers at the park from organizing a union for themselves.“They’re scared, in a way, because they’re afraid that the security and the divers spoke up, and afraid that other people in the park will take notice and they will speak up, too.” While much of the full-time workforce at Disney World has been unionized for decades, other major theme park operators in Central Florida, such as SeaWorld and Universal Orlando, have remained union-free, despite past attempts by groups of workers to disrupt this. “The security department — the men and women in that department — they work hard,” said Smith. “They do the best job they can.” “We have radios that are breaking down. We have old golf carts that are as old as the park that we’re dealing with. We work hard and we do the best job we can do, and we deserve to have support, and we deserve to have a living wage,” she argued. “When you have people that are homeless and working full time, that’s a problem.” mschueler@orlandoweekly.com

DELAY, DETER, DENY Florida invests $500K in a ‘deceptive’ hotline program meant to deter abortions BY MCKENNA S CH U EL ER
A
s Florida’s six-week abortion ban continues to leave pregnant people with fewer options in the Sunshine State, the state government is continuing to invest in programs aimed at intercepting people in Florida who are seeking licensed abortion providers. For the third year in a row, Florida’s state budget for the 2026-2027 fiscal year includes funding for an anti-abortion “telecare”program run by the Human Coalition, an anti-abortion group based out of Texas that aims to “make abortion unthinkable and unnecessary,”according to its website. The state budget also includes $29.5 million in taxpayer dollars for the Florida Pregnancy Care Network, a state program that promotes controversial anti-abortion pregnancy resource centers. These facilities, also known as crisis pregnancy centers, often depict themselves publicly as actual abortion clinics, but are — in practice — largely unregulated facilities that aren’t legally bound to federal privacy laws and aren’t required to have licensed medical professionals on staff. They’re typically run by Christian organizations or churches. Some have misleading names such as “Choices.” And in at least 21 states, including Florida, many are funded in part on the taxpayers’ dime. “It’s just incredibly disappointing that the state is investing in an organization that uses deceptive tactics like the Human Coalition does to lure people in who are looking for comprehensive resources about their sexual health, and instead are going to be met by a narrow political agenda,” said Cheyenne Drews, deputy communications director and Reproductive Freedom Program director for Progress Florida. She pointed out that Florida is one of the last holdouts in the U.S. to expand the public Medicaid health insurance program, leaving nearly one-third of uninsured, non-elderly Floridians who would be eligible for health coverage without coverage. Meanwhile, the state has also hidden its maternal mortality data, drawing concern from abortion rights advocates. Research has found that maternal health outcomes are generally worse in states with abortion restrictions. Even Florida GOP Congresswoman Kat Cammack, an opponent of abortion rights, has
publicly shared her own near-death experience after suffering an ectopic pregnancy. But instead of blaming the state’s abortion laws and how they complicate doctors’ ability to treat pregnancy complications, she instead recently blamed “misinformation”from abortion rights supporters. “It was absolute fearmongering at its worst,” she told the Wall Street Journal, which broke the story, last June. Making it harder to find care Along with Florida’s promotion of non-medical pregnancy resource centers — where staff urge against abortion as an option for unwanted pregnancies — the state has also recently made it harder for Floridians to find safe, licensed abortion clinics. As Orlando Weekly first reported in February, an online licensed medical provider search tool operated by the state Agency for Health Care Administration got rid of the search category for “abortion clinics” sometime last year. More recently, some providers, including Planned Parenthood locations, appear to have been removed from the state’s search option for healthcare providers entirely. Drews, who flagged the search issue for the Weekly, said this lack of transparent information about the state’s open, licensed abortion clinics has confused not just state organizations, but national abortion clinic directories, too. “It’s really concerning that, even between state and national partners, we’re having a hard time even like, pulling a final list of what’s open right now,” she said. The Agency for Health Care Administration did not respond to our request for an explanation on this change to its search tool. As of 2025, Florida had 49 licensed abortion clinics that were still open, according to the Guttmacher Institute — an 8 percent decrease from 2024. Crisis pregnancy centers, meanwhile — described by critics as “fake clinics” — outnumber Florida’s abortion clinics more than three to one. A ‘pro-life’ telecare program funded by the state Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, a fierce opponent of abortion rights who poured taxpayer money into an effort to fight a pro-abortion rights ballot initiative in 2024, signed into law last week a state budget for the fiscal year that
began July 1. The budget included $500,000 for a “Florida telecare program” to be run by the Human Coalition. The funding request was submitted by GOP Rep. Jenna Persons-Mulicka, who co-sponsored the Florida bill in 2023 that banned most abortions after six weeks of pregnancy. The six-week ban officially took effect May 1, 2024, after winning a battle in court. Persons-Mulicka has submitted funding requests for the Texas-based anti-abortion group each year since 2023. Altogether, the Human Coalition has received $3 million in Florida taxpayer funds since then, according to Drews — although the details of its “telecare” program are scarce. Most of the money, said Drews, appears to be going towards marketing. She submitted a public records request last year for more information about the program, which is explicitly described in Florida lawmakers’funding requests as a program to “promote family formation”and “support childbirth as an alternative to abortion.” Although she’s received the Human Coalition’s contract with the state and a tax form, she said she has yet to receive records disclosing what its program looks like in practice. “I can’t find what phone number is even affiliated with this ‘telecare’ program,” she said. Annual impact reports from the Human Coalition posted publicly to its website reveal little about its impact in Florida. The group has also received millions of taxpayer dollars from state governments in Texas, North Carolina, Georgia, Indiana, Louisiana and Tennessee, according to its latest impact report. State lawmakers in Oklahoma are similarly considering funding the out-of-state group, to help support its anti-abortion “Choosing Childbirth”program. “Over the past year, your support has enabled the launch of telecare in Florida and Indiana!” the Human Coalition’s 2024 Annual Impact report reads. “This is part of a comprehensive state-by-state plan to support women while working to end abortion.” According to the report, more than 1,450 families had been “served”by its telecare program in Florida as of 2024. Florida is not mentioned at all in its 2025 impact report. A spokesperson for the Human Coalition, when initially reached by the Weekly, declined to set up an interview with our reporter about their work in Florida after the Weekly declined to send the group our questions ahead of time, per our standard interview policy. The spokesperson shared in a statement afterward, however, that “Human Coalition is honored to walk alongside Florida women and families during pregnancy and as they welcome their babies.” “The mothers we serve face real, everyday challenges, from unstable housing to finding reliable childcare and steady work,” the spokesperson added. “Human Coalition helps connect them with the practical support and community resources that make a lasting difference. We’re proud of the stability and hope Florida families
have found. We remain committed to standing with Florida moms as they build a bright future for their children.” A ‘duplicative’ use of state funds Still, based on information that’s publicly available, it’s unclear what the Human Coalition actually does for the state with its generous cushion of taxpayer dollars. According to the most recent funding request, the Human Coalition’s telecare program “shall provide direct services, supports, social services case management, and referrals to biological parents of unborn children and biological or adoptive parents of children under the age of two years.” But is it a hotline? Without a phone number associated with the program, it’s unclear how exactly it works. What is clear, however, is that the state already has a 24/7 “option line” run by the state-funded Florida Pregnancy Care Network — the phone number that’s listed on the notorious anti-abortion billboards all along the state’s highways. It’s unclear to Drews whether the Human Coalition has its own hotline or simply supports the hotline run by the FPCN. “It seems entirely duplicative,” she noted. “If anything, maybe their intercepting techniques, and their marketing might be more aggressive. But it seems very duplicative.” Records show Persons-Mulicka and Martin originally requested $1 million for the Human Coalition’s telecare program this year. Only half made it into the $117.6 billion state budget. The Governor’s Office praised the spending plan, sharing in a statement that it “reflects nearly eight years of conservative leadership anchored by fiscal discipline, responsible governance, and strategic investment.” Florida Democratic lawmakers have attempted to strengthen regulation for state-funded crisis pregnancy centers and explicitly claw back funding for the Florida Pregnancy Care Network to eliminate the state’s subsidization of anti-abortion propaganda. But, as the minority party in Florida — where the number of Republicans in the state Legislature dwarfs that of Democrats — they’ve been unsuccessful in that effort. “The continued investment in routing people to locations that have no medical or safety standards is just deeply concerning on the taxpayers’ dime,” said Drews, who formerly worked as a public affairs consultant for Planned Parenthood of South, East and North Florida. “Just the idea that equipment going inside a patient’s body might not even be sanitized in between patients — because that’s how little regulation they have — is so concerning in a time when the governor just vetoed what, nearly a billion dollars in things that local governments needed,” she added.“Meanwhile, millions of dollars are being routed to these places that have zero accountability.” news@orlandoweekly.com

omething filthy, twisted and cryptid is brewing in the underbelly of America. The White Trash Bash, starring Boulet Brothers’ Dragula and Boulet Brothers’ Dragula: Titans uglies Abhora and Priscilla Chambers, is kicking off a 14-city tour showcasing their drag-asperformance-art terror right here in Orlando this weekend. Yee-haw! These two monsters — and drag sisters — have hitched their trailers to spread wickedness along the East Coast, with a brand new show following a
family riddled with debauchery and summertime filth and foolery. The name of the show aside, the pair plan to use these events as a platform to uplift non-white voices and artists. Chambers says that the plan is to donate 20 percent of the proceeds from each show to a nonprofit. “When I came up with this idea and pitched it to Abhora, I was like, ‘I want to give back to anyone who is not a fucking white person,’”Chambers tells Orlando Weekly.

“If I can do anything to support POC trans individuals, that’s my No. 1 thing because of my privilege as a white person, and I want to do something with this platform that I have.” The touring headliners will be joined at Conduit by Chambers’ drag daughters Calcutta and Reptillian Anderson, as well as local openers Davi Oddity and Lady Brii Adonis. Chambers emphasized the importance of featuring local POC individuals and artists on each stop of the Bash. Abhora, a Miami native, credits some of the show’s aesthetic inspiration to the tacky, nostalgic nature of their home state. “We’re starting in Florida because that’s where I grew up and that’s what I’m familiar with. Flamingo decals, gators, the Florida Lottery and all the airbrushed T-shirts on the beach are some of the things we wanted to incorporate into this show,” Abhora says. “We’ll be going up and down the coast and just bringing out the cornucopia of white trash culture and celebrating the grossest parts of every part of this fucked-up colony.” Chambers also draws inspiration from the South, specifically Florida’s own Hayden Silas Anhedönia, better known as Ethel Cain, crediting Cain as her muse in an Instagram post on the fourth anniversary of the artist’s debut album, Preacher’s Daughter.
“That woman is the most precious woman in the world to me. With art, especially as a trans person making art, you have to make people uncomfortable and I like making people uncomfortable if it’s for the right reason. And that’s what her music’s about,” says Chambers. For both Abhora and Chambers, their art and drag centers on overcoming and confronting the uncomfortable: assault, abuse, drug addiction, social ignorance. Chambers became acquainted with Abhora back when she was 18, meeting the latter after moving to Asheville. “She kind of forced me to get in drag at gunpoint. She was like, ‘Hey you, gonna make you some hip pads and you gonna go out there and dance, girl. You’re gonna make it, honey.’ So we’ve been friends for a decade now,” says Chambers. In Asheville, Chambers and Abhora found they were bored with the local drag scene. The two wanted to do more “spooky shit” and alternative looks, while the mainstream only wanted polished pageant acts. “We always had these ideas that were like, ‘Hey, what if I came out with a submachine gun and just shot the audience. You think they’re going to like that?’” Abhora says. The punk, horror-centric deviant underbelly of drag was fomenting out there, but it didn’t have a name yet when the two were getting their start, Abhora explains. Still, this did not deter them from striving for alternative styles and characters. “We just wanted to really create and craft these characters rather than just be a generic drag queen, just shoving three names together and wearing a different color leotard than the last girl. We’re basically just the negative versions of Trixie and Katya,” Abhora says. Chambers and Abhora note that regardless of their deviation from traditional drag, their audiences, who have all come from different walks of life, have been positive and receptive to their performances and creativity. To them, the scene is not limited to any small pool of identities, including those considered of the heteronorm. “I don’t like the word heteronormative. It’s ignorant, and ignorant is not a bad word. It’s just a lack of knowledge — we’re all ignorant. It’s our job to educate ourselves on what we do, and that is the biggest reason why I wanted to do this tour,” explains Abhora. “What it boils down to is we — Priscilla and I — feel we don’t have to change who we are. No one should.” arts@orlandoweekly.com

Winter Park Playhouse, Central Florida’s best and only professional musical theater, raises the curtain on its freshly renovated home
• Original crafts: ipas to sours to classics
• Pre & post game: Orlando city (go ruckus!), Orlando pirate & Orlando storm
The struggle for stable stage spaces
is one of the most serious structural issues impacting Orlando’s performing arts community, so I’m thrilled this week to share an upbeat update about the revitalization of a vital area venue. Since opening their doors in 2002, the Winter Park Playhouse has firmly established itself as Central Florida’s best — and only — dedicated professional musical theater space by producing 135 main-stage musicals, 171 cabarets, 56 special events and eight editions of their internationally known Florida Festival of New Musicals. On the evening of July 7, after 10 months of extensive expansions and upgrades to the building that they now own, WPP raised the curtain on its freshly renovated home during a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by community leaders and elected officials. “What this place is all about is bringing joy to the world. And we all know that art, and specifically music, unites people. You come in the door and you forget all the things. It doesn’t matter what your political leanings are, it doesn’t matter how much money you have, it doesn’t matter the color of your skin, your gender, any of those things; you all come together and you escape, and that’s what this place is all about,” WPP executive director Heather Alexander said in her welcoming remarks. “We wanted it to be a home: a home for you all, a home for our artists, a home where you walk in and you just feel happy.” The updates are evident from the instant you enter the expanded lobby, which leads to an entirely overhauled main stage offering 171 plush Broadway-style seats (nearly a 40% capacity increase) surrounding the substantially larger stage. The reconfiguration required moving staff offices to the second floor — where they

overlook the Goodwill across the street — as well as making major money-sucking modifications to the circa-1948 building. “They found a fuel tank under this stage. We had asbestos, we had termites,” said Alexander, adding jokingly, “we did not find buckets of gold or dead bodies.” “We believe the arts matter. They enrich our lives, inspire creativity, bring people together and help define the character of our city. Cities are remembered not only for the buildings they construct, but for the culture they choose to nurture. For nearly 25 years, the Winter Park Playhouse has done exactly that,” said Winter Park Mayor Sheila DiCiccio during the inaugural event. Noting the $2.3 million annual economic impact WPP brings to the city, she added, “The real impact is measured in standing ovations, sheer laughter, unforgettable performances and the memories families create together.” WPP’s glow-up was made possible in large part by an $8 million Tourist Development Tax grant awarded in 2024, and outgoing Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings used the ribbon-cutting as an opportunity to tout his new citizen task force, which will advise on uses for the $385 million collected annually from the 6% “heads in beds” hotel tax. “Rather than just centralize that decision-making with the board of county commissioners, we open it up to the citizens to give us recommendations. As long as I’m mayor, for these remaining five months, I’m going to continue to use the authority that I have in order to do that,” said Demings. “These are the types of amenities that I want to see in this community, for all of us; for my children, for my granddaughters. I have four
of them, and they are all performers — they are ballet dancers — and so I want them to have the opportunity to live in that kind of community.” In addition to the main theater, WPP also now boasts a brand-new cabaret lounge, which will be christened Aug. 19-20 by celebrated singer Natalie Cordone, who has been performing at the Playhouse for over 22 years. She’ll be accompanied on piano by Christopher Leavy, another longtime WPP mainstay who tells me that he’s especially excited for the “sumptuous” balcony that the pit orchestra will now occupy. “When I first walked in this spring and saw how it was coming together, I was giddy. I was bouncing off the floor. And tonight, walking in and seeing it with the piano on stage, and all the lighting and everything, we started our rehearsal and I just started to cry,” says Leavy. “In the 19 years I have spent here, every time something was less than desirable, we would say, ‘We’ll fix that in Playhouse 2.0,’ but I don’t know that I ever thought I would live to see it.” Back on the main stage, artistic director Roy Allen is readying Never Can Say Goodbye for its regional premiere on Aug. 7, a title he calls “apropos” for the first production in their new theater. “Bringing new works to Central Florida is what we’ve always wanted to do,” Allen says, adding that although “most of this was for the patrons, to give them better comfort and get more of them in here,” the new facilities could facilitate more ambitious offerings, like London’s recent musical adaptation of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. “With this new space, I think that the sky’s the limit.” skubersky@orlandowekly.com

EL PUEBLO MEXICAN RESTAURANT
ROOP! (HERE IT IS)
Grand Roopram brings Surinamese-by-wayof-the-Netherlands roti to Orlando BY MI CH AEL MU RPH Y
I
f you’re like most Americans, Suriname is not a place that exists for you. If you’re like me, it exists down there — maybe an island, maybe not. If you’re a Jeopardy champion, it sits between French Guiana and plain ol’Guyana, which it turns out also exist. Look,I know things.I know Suriname has planted a flag in Orlando. A splash of yellow, red and green at the corner of Lee and OBT that shouts “Grand Roopram Roti Restaurant.” And while I won’t feign prior familiarity, I now know Surinamese cuisine is a mashup of Indian, Indonesian, African, Chinese and Dutch traditions. I also know the version dished out at the restaurant colloquially referred to as “Roop” is quite good. The Rosemont outpost of Roop opened in April. It’s a no-frills counter-order affair, fast-foodie but spotless, the first Stateside location of a chain anchored in Suriname and the Netherlands, a chain that’s been serving up soul-hugging eats for over a half a century. The clue to what Roop does is in its name: roti — an unleavened flatbread gifted to Suriname by the Hindustanis. I enjoy the bread, and also the word: roti, roti, Don Quixote picked goat roti from his goatee. If I had a beard, Roop’s goat roti
would occupy it. Those less pro with bread as utensil will find themselves sauce-faced. But I digress before I progress. There were starter nibbles: traditional phulourie ($2.99), Indian-inspired split-pea fritters dipped into tomato chutney and addictive as hushpuppies, and barra, a spiced fried lentil dough eaten as handheld. We opted for barra with saltfish ($9), a street food staple. The bread offered lovely crunch-and-give, yielding mouthfuls of nicely spiced fish. (Caveat: You must like saltfish, with its preserved headiness. I do and did.) In Suriname, roti refers to both bread and bread-with-stuff, that stuff largely being curried proteins. Those who come to Roop often come for its signature roti curry chicken ($13), the comfiest of Surinamese comfort food. The curry is mellow, loose and Maggi-forward, the chicken tender and ample — more homey than nuanced, but I’m down with homey. But I found roti curry goat ($20) a flavor step above, with a richer gravy; the meat just-right gamy, tender enough to swirl in mouth and loosen bone — mop it up with green beans, potato, hit it with fiery pepper sauce and away you go. The roti bread accompanying both was soft, hot, flaky and easy to shape into a scoop.

The melting pot cuisines of Suriname and the Dutch Caribbean are similar, but the former pulls deeper from its Chinese roots. Case in point: tjauwmin and fried rice. Portions called “small” ($8.99) are not, and come topped with a roasted chicken leg. Tjauwmin arrives as a mound of thin egg noodles slicked in a deeper, sweeter and more complex sauce than its chow mein namesake, buoyed by soy, five-spice and the smokiness of BBQ pork. Both it and the fried rice were similarly flavored and equally enjoyed. Along with roti, Roop is known for turmeric fried chicken ($2.50 for a breast). It hits with a visual thud, seemingly thick and sans turmeric, but the batter is actually thin, locking in wonderfully moist bird and a burst of woody, earthy spice. A tablemate texted after,“My mustache smells like turmeric and I love it.” We’re now charter members of Turmeric Mustache, the most unofficial of Roop fan clubs. It’s easy to stan; generous and affordable food, simple, tasty and true to its origins (and origins of its origins), food that’s antithetical to our times. Roop’s slogan is “Roti from Roop always tastes good.” I’ve been twice. If twice qualifies as always, I agree. dining@orlandoweekly.com

(Prime Video) The Ultimatum: Marry or Move On — The Season 4 cast of commitment-phobic cuties and their impatient partners includes Jessica Grace, a realtor and former Charlotte Hornets dancer who refuses to have kids with boyfriend Edris until they get married. OK, I’ll bite: Where
does the “ultimatum” part come in? (Netflix)
Streaming Thursday:
The Hawk — Could it be that our long national nightmare is over and the era of the Will Ferrell sports comedy has returned? In this one, Mr. Toolshed plays a has-been PGA golfer who refuses to retire without completing the Grand Slam. Sounds like we’re in for some surreal fun, since any Denny’s customer worth their salt will tell you that retiring right after finishing a Grand Slam is gonna give you some weird-ass nightmares. (Netflix)
Streaming Friday:
23,000 Lives — An inspiring true story, well, inspired this timely drama about seafaring German kids who shirked law and convention to rescue refugees from the Mediterranean. “In hindsight, I’d tell ’em to opt for a staycation,” offers Greta Thunberg. (Netflix) Desire — Dangerous complications are afoot
for a married lawyer who dives into an affair with her daughter’s swimming coach. It would have ended a lot sooner, but her stupid husband believed her when she told him the active element in HTH is chlamydia. (Netflix) The East Palace — A South Korean monarch tasks a swordsman and a medium with ridding his home of ghosts. First step is ordering them to flee to the nearest convenient parallel dimension that isn’t under martial law. (Netflix) Hanzaisha — The nightmare isn’t over for the one man to walk away from a mass stabbing. Now he’s marked for death by the kingpins of an insidious conspiracy. Keeping him alive is the mission of two guardian angels whose respective vocations make them distinctly suited to the task: a cop and a former TV journalist, who — aaaand he’s dead. (Prime Video) Heartstopper Forever — Nick and Charlie try to keep their long-distance relationship going in a feature that acts as an ersatz fourth and final season for the queer coming-of-age series. Sounds like somebody’s too impatient to follow the normal cycle, which is six seasons, a movie and finally admitting it all happened just because you were bored at camp. (Netflix) The Map of Longing — Bereft after her sister passes away from leukemia, a Spanish woman discovers she’s been bequeathed a game to play that may hold the key to her moving on. I mean, I enjoy Cards Against Humanity too, but I can tell you “my sister’s piss-poor stem
cells” only slays the room about 40 percent of the time. (Netflix) Young Farts Trailer Parts — Two Canadian brothers run a business selling recovered RV parts in a comedy docuseries that was originally known as Trailer Trash. You know, just like Demi Moore! (Prime Video)
Streaming Monday:
King of the Hill — Season 15 shows Bobby finally doing the deed with Connie, while his parents adjust to the challenges of retired life, like learning to spot internet scams. But are they really the ones we have to worry about, given that their kid has apparently just fallen for some Laotian influencer’s long con? (Hulu)
Streaming Tuesday:
Bill Maher: The Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize for American Humor — Watch Louis C.K., Jay Leno and a bunch of other shameless, gutless toadies walk under the tarp together to honor Bill for speaking truth to power. And when I say “truth,” I mean “both-sidesism that just happens to fall more heavily on the less enfranchised.” And when I say “power,” I mean “everybody who keeps forgetting to cancel HBO.” (Netflix) WWE: Unreal — Storylines in Season 3 include the writing staff’s quest to give a proper sendoff to the retiring John Cena. Given that the brilliant plan they came up with was to have the guy whose motto had been “Never give up” tap out to a sleeper hold, I’m wondering how they missed out on landing the gig as my divorce lawyers. TOO MUCH PASSION
Alternative-rock survivors the Smithereens will ignite the Plaza Live stage in their long overdue Orlando comeback BY MATTH EW MOYE R
N
irvana stan or not, it’s impossible to deny that late frontman Kurt Cobain had damned good musical taste. Whether it was sporting a Daniel Johnston T-shirt in photo shoots, bringing out the Breeders on tour or producing the Melvins’ Houdini, the man was eager to share his influences with his own audiences Nestled amongst Cobain’s Half Japanese and Young Marble Giants LPs, another treasured album was the breakout 1989 album 11 by New Jersey power-pop maestros The Smithereens. The record turned up twice at pivotal moments in Cobain lore: Nirvana had a copy of 11 in the studio when they were recording Nevermind with Butch Vig to regularly consult, and the record appeared in Cobain’s list of favorite albums in his posthumously published journals. The reasons for Cobain’s ardor were (and are) easy to hear. The Smithereens, much like the boys from Aberdeen, combined lush Beatles-esque vocal harmonies and melodies with alternately jangly and crunchy, serrated guitar lines, buoying frontman Pat DiNizio’s lovelorn lyrics and lostboy delivery — exemplified in anthems like “A Girl Like You,” “Too Much Passion” and “Only a Memory.” This was a band that looked cool too. Decked
out in leather, severe sunglasses, turtlenecks and berets, they looked like particularly rebellious Beat poets, up for a good rumble over the merits of Rimbaud vs. Verlaine. Though the band narrowly missed a chance to have their “A Girl Like You” be the John Cusack boombox song on Say Anything (don’t fret, their music was in Troma films instead), the Smithereens weren’t just some blip on the popcult radar. Their underground cred was equally matched with a fair degree of commercial success: signed to major label Capitol, where they released four albums; radio hits with “Girl Like You” and “Blood and Roses” (also featured on an episode of Miami Vice); tours with Tom Petty, Lou Reed and the Ramones; inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame. (Not to mention gigs at Visage.) This a band that did — and does — it their way. The Smithereens are still at it in 2026. Weathering the passing of frontman Pat DiNizio in 2017, original members drummer Dennis Diken and guitarist Jim Babjak are joined by bassist Mike Mesaros, backing a rotation of allstar fill-ins for DiNizio: Marshall Crenshaw, Gin Blossoms’ Robin Wilson and John Cowsill of The Cowsills. The love of music, honoring DiNizio’s
memory and the joy of playing the much-loved parts of their deep discography pushes members new and old onto the stage night after night, with the band keeping a busy touring schedule. “When Pat passed, we were dumbstruck for a few beats there. We didn’t know what was going to happen. Pat left us in December of 2017; we already had a gig on the books for January ’18 at the Count Basie Theater in Red Bank. It was an event produced by Little Steven Van Zandt. He said, ‘Guys, let’s keep the date. You fellas will play and we’ll enlist a bunch of other singers and we’ll turn it into a tribute to Pat,’ which is what we did. I think we had 20 or so different vocalists come up at night and sing Smithereens songs with Mike, Jimmy and myself. It was one of those nights where you could feel the love in the room. It was so strong. That’s how we came to feel that Marshall and Robin were good fits,” remembers Diken. “We wanted to keep going, but at the same time we certainly did not want to have a sound-alike or a lookalike, or anybody that was going to imitate Pat.” For Diken, the band’s fans played just as key a role in the band’s resurgence as the new singers. “Our audience has been real, real staunch,” he says.“They’ve been with us for 46 years. We could
never have done any of this without their love and support.” This week sees the Smithereens returning to Orlando after a long absence — drummer Diken fills in the gaps in our memory by reminding us they were here for a gig at EPCOT a few years back — this time on a Southern summer jaunt with The Fixx. The Smithereens circa 2026 understand the assignment and play the hits and the fan-fave deep cuts. “As a fan, if I go see my favorite bands, I’m gonna want to hear the songs I’m familiar with, and so we take that into consideration. We don’t omit any of the bigger hits, so to speak. They’re all on tap in our setlist, and we kind of tailor it towards who the vocalist is for a given gig, because certain singers prefer certain songs. But besides the hits, we do dig into the album tracks and select them accordingly,” says Diken. For this tour, it’s Cowsill’s turn to cover vocals. He came to the band organically in the best of ways, through friendship and appreciation of his previous creative work. Diken remembers seeing The Cowsills play the Henry Ford Theater with Screaming Trees and being so “knocked out” by the power of the band’s vocal harmonies that he and Babjak promptly went backstage to ask members of the band to sing on Blow Up track “Now and Then” in 1991. And they’ve remained friends (and fans of one another’s work) over the ensuing years. Though DiNizio is an incredibly tough act to follow, Cowsill is able to walk that fine line of honoring DiNizio’s harmonies while adding his own creative stamp to familiar Smithereens gems. “‘Now and Then’ is one that has a special place in John’s heart because The Cowsills did sing on the record. He has, I think, a spiritual connection to that one. There’s a song called ‘She’s Got a Way’ that John and Jimmy both can identify with, because it was written about Pat’s daughter, and John has a daughter, and Jimmy now has a granddaughter. So that song really resonates with him as well. Those are two we start the show with.” The band let loose a little bit live nowadays with Who and Beatles covers slipped into the setlists, like they’re back in the New Jersey garages and laundry rooms where the young band first started playing together in 1980. And they might just air some of those covers of teenage hits this weekend at the Plaza Live. “We learned to play from listening to records, so that whole feeling of staying connected to what made us want to start out doing this in the first place is still very strong,” says Diken. music@orlandoweekly.com

LOCAL RELEASES
It’s good days for shoegaze, which is exploding in the underground right now. It’s not just being revived but reimagined with new iterations coming at the most rapid clip in ages, perhaps ever. But in the stampede, a herd mentality has already emerged, with most of the newgazers drinking from the same 1990s alt-rock pond. However, area artist Rudedog — the solo vehicle for 21-year-old Bithlo musician Juniper Farr — takes a much more obscure and original path. Although shoegaze is both the power and the premise of her sound, some unexpected range and depth lurk underneath. Stylistically, Rudedog’s new album, Target Practice, is filtered through the ever-present fuzz of shoegaze. Melodically, though, these eight songs share little DNA with My Bloody Valentine or any of the orthodox shoegaze touchstones. Instead, the music taps a decidedly reflective vein. Its mood is filled with the heart of Midwest emo. Moreover, it’s got the terroir of country with songs like “Speed World Dragway,”“Christmas, Florida” and “Zora Neale Hurston” that signpost their local roots. Tracks like “The Hunt” and “Shooting My Reflection in Metal” even show folktronica flourishes. Farr says, “For Target Practice, I was inspired a lot by emo and alt-country bands like Home Is Where, Wednesday and Glass Beach when recording.” What further distinguishes Rudedog from other artists both shoegaze and otherwise is the voice behind it. Not only are the vocals unusually up-front for a shoegaze act, but the delivery and lyrics carry the confessional edge of a singer-songwriter. When you’re an acutely literate transgender furry woman living in the rural South like Farr, all that packs added depth and dimension. As such, Target Practice is a complex and layered lyrical intersection of examinations
CONCERT PICKS THIS WEEK
Rudedog — the solo vehicle for Bithlo musician Juniper Farr — takes an obscure and original path with their shoegazing sound on new album Target Practice. The music taps a decidedly reflective vein; its mood is filled with the heart of Midwest emo. both personal (“Clay Pot,”“Christmas, Florida”) and intellectual (“A Marxist-Leninist Analysis of the Puppygirl,” “Zora Neale Hurston,” “John Frum Cargo Cult”). “I’m a pretty outspoken leftist as I used to be a student organizer,” she says.“So a lot of the songs … were inspired by my experiences in those spaces and my perception of the world around me.” Target Practice is a staggering concentration of sound and emotion. But rather than dumbfounding you with its miscellany and alterity, Rudedog’s music hits like a fresh revelation. It’s the rare magic of something both novel and resonant. The album now streams everywhere and is also available on Bandcamp as a custom CD in a jewel case designed by Farr herself.
Path of Destruction, Jailbird, Zero Chill, False Alarm: Even if the regulars at the bowling alley are getting used to the rock shows organized by My Sister’s House there, this one’s still gonna be a jolt. An all-ages punk show sounds innocent enough, sweet even. But the lineup of Alabama’s Path of Destruction, Virginia’s Jailbird and Florida’s Zero Chill and False Alarm will be a night of unrelenting hardcore savagery. So strap in, party people, it’s gonna get real sick. (7 p.m. Thursday, July 16, My Sister’s House, $15)

Cat Power: Cat Power’s freshly launched run is named “The Greatest Tour” for the 20th anniversary of her venerated album The Greatest. It’s not some weirdly cocky superlative, though it’ll probably be true for a big chunk of the indie nation. Any Cat Power show is a big deal, but this historical series commemorates a peak masterpiece that’s a pillar of the indie-rock canon. Matador’s anniversary reissue just dropped last week and the Orlando show will be only the third date on this world tour, so expect a beloved classic to be revived with fresh air and historical weight. (6 p.m. Saturday, July 18, The Beacham, $39.50.-$45) Future Bartenderz, The Buzzwords, Mercy Mercy: This show is possibly, hopefully, another sign of a promising local scene trend: the good all-ages concert. Featuring a noteworthy bill of sardonic punks Future Bartenderz, new garage rock & roll supergroup The Buzzwords and Jacksonville power-pop punks Mercy Mercy, this all-ages matinee show is both inclusive and brilliantly not watered-down for the kids. Amen. Shows like this better our scene for generations to come. (1 p.m. Saturday, July 18, Will’s Pub, $11-$16) music@orlandoweekly.com orlandoweekly.com ● JULY 15-21, 2026 ● ORLANDO WEEKLY

A sea of pink washes over the Kia Center as Megan Moroney takes the stage for her Cloud 9 tour. The self-described emo cowgirl is bringing the heartbreak to Orlando with (relatively) old faves like “Tennessee Orange” and the freshly minted No. 1 hit “Beautiful Things.” Her new album, Cloud 9, shows a shift to an upbeat country sound with potent pop undertones, but still stays true to her traditional heartfelt storytelling. With a stage festooned in pink flowers, Moroney is sure to have you on Cloud 9 as soon as she steps up to the mic. 7 p.m., Kia Center, 400 W. ORLANDO WEEKLY ● JULY 15-21, 2026 ● orlandoweekly.com
An “art film” in the most literal sense, The Color of Pomegranates can be viewed as a moving painting, listened to for its groovy collage of folkloric music and verse, ingested as historical document … just don’t expect a linear story or timeline, despite its logline as a biopic of 18th-century Armenian troubadour Sayat-Nova. As part of the museum’s monthly Access for All day, this free screening is jointly presented by Orlando Museum of Art and Enzian Theater, with a talkback from OMA Chief Curator Coralie Claeysen-Gleyzon and Enzian Programming Manager Tim Anderson. At the risk of linking art to crude physical processes, Pomegranates’ lapidary quality may have its roots in filmmaker Sergei Parajanov’s childhood: His father, an Armenian gem importer often harassed by Soviet authorities, would sometimes force him to swallow small pieces of jewelry and defecate them after the raids. Swallowing pain and shitting out beauty — it’s almost the definition of art, no? 6 p.m., Orlando Museum of Art, 2416 N. Mills Ave., enzian.org, free. — Jessica Bryce Young

Steve-O
One of TV’s biggest jackasses comes to Orlando to share tales of his wild life. Stephen Glover, better known as Steve-O, is a featured player on unhinged reality slapstick show Jackass, part of the original cast alongside Johnny Knoxville, Chris Pontius and Ryan Dunn and was heavily featured in the spinoff films. The Crash and Burn tour comes just after the release of Jackass: Best and Last, the final installment in the series. This solo comedy show is a mix of reminiscing, unseen footage, gross-outs and personal stories of his journey to sobriety. If you want to see a cautionary tale end in redemption, this is it. 7 p.m., Funny Bone, 9109 International Drive, orlando. funnybone.com, $42-$72. — Paige Bright SATURDAY, JULY 18

This human-scale Microcon features local vendors and creatives offering up print goodness, collectibles and sundry artisanal goods and treats, all inside (thank heavens) Ten10’s BSide room. Ten10 staff will be happy to serve you beverages to fortify your resolve in making any manner of impulse purchase as well. Bosco
Aliens, spaceships and drag are coming to the Plaza Live when Drag Race star Bosco headlines her first solo tour, The Marvelous Miss Gender. Bosco rose to fame as the “Demon Queen of Seattle” on the Season 14 of RuPaul’s Drag Race. She came back to Drag Race to compete in the 10th season of All Stars just last year. But now the spotlight belongs solely to Bosco, in a retro-futuristic show about her alter ego, Miss Gender, trying to take over the world by turning everyone trans. In the show, fans of Orlando drag might recognize some numbers that are inspired by the iconic Sierrah Foxx from the City Beautiful, a (sadly now deceased) performer who was pivotal to the way Bosco sees drag. This show is Bosco’s big moment and it shows, from the scale of the production to the scale of the venue. 8 p.m., Plaza Live, 425 N. Meet Regal! Regal (A595906) is 1 year old, sweet and friendly, and has been at the shelter for two months. Regal was found roaming the streets of Winter Garden. He wasn’t wearing a collar. He didn’t have a microchip. We searched for his family, posted notices and waited. No one came. Now, nearly two months later, this sweet boy is still waiting — but this time, he’s waiting for someone new. Regal should be spending his days chasing toys, learning tricks and curling up beside his favorite person. Instead, he’s watched countless other dogs leave the shelter while he patiently waits for his turn. Let’s get him home. Orange County Animal Services is located at 2769 Conroy Road in Orlando, near the Mall at Millenia. The shelter is open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. every day except Wednesday, when it’s open 2-6 p.m. For more information, please call 407-8363111 or visit ocnetpets.com.
