» DeSantis appoints Michael Crabb to fill Orange County Commission vacancy Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis tapped Orange County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Michael Crabb last Friday evening to fill a vacancy on the Orange County board of county commissioners, just weeks before the same seat is up for election. Crabb, a Republican, is one of the five candidates that filed to run for the county commission seat this fall, representing District 2. The race is officially nonpartisan. His appointment by the governor is intended to fill a vacancy left by former county commissioner Christine Moore (the only Republican on the board), who resigned from her seat in April to run for Apopka mayor (she lost). Under state statutes, Florida’s governor “shall fill by appointment any vacancy in a state, district, or county office, other than a member or officer of the Legislature, for the remainder of the term of an appointive officer and for the remainder of the term of an elective office, if there is less than 28 months remaining in the term.” Even so, the Orange County Democratic Party criticized the appointment on social media, calling it a “complete disregard for the voters of District 2.” The Orange county commission is currently made up of six county commissioners, plus the mayor. After this fall, however, the county commission will consist of eight commissioners, plus a new mayor (since Jerry Demings is outgoing). Orange County voters approved the addition of two new commissioners in 2024 to account for population growth.
» Florida issued warning against mental health medications for children and teens
Last month, the Florida Department of Health issued guidance for psychotropic pharmacotherapy in children 5 to 17, recommending against the use of drugs to treat mental health conditions like depression, anxiety or attention-deficit related disorders in most cases. This came two months after U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. said the agency would address the overuse of psychiatric medications among children at a Make America Healthy Again summit. Florida’s guidance follows suit. In the state’s new guidance statement, the DOH “cautions” healthcare providers prescribing psychotropic medications for anxiety, depression, attention deficit/ hyperactivity disorder and behavioral disorders, recommending instead employing other strategies, including psychotherapy, evidence-based behavior management and supervised tapering-off of medications. In response to HHS in May, the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry said the agency’s statement “broadly and imprecisely challenges established psychiatric diagnoses and evidence-based treatments,” creating risk for children and families. “AACAP urges policymakers to ensure that decisions affecting access to psychiatric medications and mental health services are grounded in evidence and informed by child and adolescent psychiatrists and other qualified clinicians,” said Dr. John Walkup, AACAP president. A spokesperson for the Florida DOH said the state’s guidelines do not contradict the AACAP’s recommendation and are intended to raise awareness.
» Florida Dem chair called on Ashley Moody to release grand jury report on Hope Florida
Florida Democratic Party Chair Nikki Fried called on Republican U.S. Sen. Ashley Moody — formerly Florida state attorney general — to use her power to seek the release of a grand jury report into the $10 million in taxpayer funds diverted to the Hope Florida Foundation in 2024. Hope Florida is the community-based, state-wide welfare assistance initiative launched by First Lady Casey DeSantis in 2021. That $10 million was part of a legal settlement the state received, later diverted through Hope Florida to various political committees — one controlled by Gov. Ron DeSantis’ then-chief of staff James Uthmeier — and used to help defeat a 2024 ballot initiative that would have legalized recreational marijuana use. These revelations led to an investigation in the Florida House in 2025 and later a grand jury investigation by State Attorney Jack Campbell in Tallahassee. No charges were brought in that investigation but, under state law, the report was supposed to have been released within 15 days of its completion. While AG, Moody approved the transfer of the $10 million to the Hope Florida Foundation as part of a larger $67 million agreement between the state and Centene, one of several managed-care providers the state contracts with to provide health services to the poor, elderly and disabled. “Floridians deserve answers,” Fried told reporters on a Zoom conference call. “What did Ashley Moody know? When did she know it? What is so damning in this
report that she still is trying to keep it sealed? Ashley needs to stop keeping secrets from the people of this state.”
» Uthmeier announced felony charges against Canadian citizen who voted in Florida
A shared federal database has provided evidence to charge a Canadian citizen with voting illegally in Florida seven times, Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier announced, chastising a federal judge who has shut down that same database for most of the country. Melbourne resident Giorgio Dominique Mucelli, 66, is a lawful permanent resident in the United States but is not a U.S. citizen. He was charged last Thursday with one count of voting by non-citizen elector and one count of false affirmation. Both are third-degree felonies, and, if convicted as charged, he could face up to 10 years in prison. An investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s Election Crime Unit as well as state prosecutors detected that Mucelli registered to vote in Broward County in April 2004, Uthmeier said, falsely saying under oath that he was a U.S. citizen. However, U.S. Department of Homeland Security records confirmed he has maintained lawful permanent resident status, last renewing it in April 2023. In 2025, President Trump signed an executive order requiring DHS to allow states access to verify the legal status of voters on their rolls. In response, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services made changes to DHS’s Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements database, including adding Social Security records and allowing states to conduct bulk searches. The League of Women Voters sued after that action last fall, alleging violation of federal law.

Moms for Liberty member Alicia Farrant faces off against fellow school board member

An Orange County school board member and member of the right-wing “parental rights” group Moms for Liberty is running this year for school board chair, aiming to replace outgoing chair Teresa Jacobs.
It’s a position that would give Alicia Farrant, a Republican who first drew headlines for her book-banning activism, the power to set the agenda for board meetings and break votes on issues that are split by a tie.
Farrant, representing District 3 in Florida’s fourth-largest school district, was elected to the Orange County school board in 2022, at the height of Moms for Liberty’s influence in state and eventually national politics.
Before joining the board, the mom of five had already become known to school board members for her objections to books she decried as “pornographic” in school libraries and for protesting the district’s mandatory masking policy during the deadly COVID-19 pandemic.
She’s also a proud ally of outgoing Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis, who has similarly championed state efforts to scrutinize school libraries, roll back societal acceptance of queer identities and purge books with LGBTQ+ themes.
“This book-ban hoax is nothing more than political propaganda designed to bring confusion and division,” Farrant claimed at a 2024 press conference alongside DeSantis and then-education commissioner Manny Diaz Jr. “When we look at the big picture, this isn’t so much about books,” Farrant argued.“This battle is between good and evil that is targeting our children.”
Farrant is running for school board chair this year against fellow school board member Angie Gallo. Gallo, a longtime public education advocate, has already been endorsed for the chair role by most of her sitting colleagues, including school board members Maria Salamanca (the current vice-chair), Vicki Elaine Felder, Anne Douglas and Stephanie Vanos.
A mother of two who was previously active with the Florida PTA, Gallo is a former Republican who left the GOP in 2023 and registered as a Democrat in 2025. The school board — and the chair position — is officially nonpartisan, although school boards became increasingly politicized during the COVID-19 pandemic as groups like Moms for Liberty rose
up to protest diversity representation in school books (often, gay representation) and mandatory mask requirements in schools.
Gallo, however, doesn’t use partisan terms (or invoke Bible verses) to describe her motivation for wanting to lead the board as chair. “It’s really a choice of strong leadership versus ideology and chaos,” Gallo told Orlando Weekly in a phone interview.
Gallo was first elected to Orange County school board in 2018. She says she was driven to run for school board chair to help lead the district through the challenges of declining enrollment and teacher pay and supporting stronger student outcomes.
Both she and her daughters, now grown, are products of the public education system. One of them today works as a fifth-grade teacher in Orange County Public Schools.
“I believe that my leadership skills, my proven leadership, really sets me up to be able to lead us through those challenges,” Gallo told the Weekly. “And I couldn’t leave it up to chance. I couldn’t leave it up to have someone that is more interested in culture wars or pushing their ideologies in this position, because we need someone who’s focused on student outcomes, teacher and staff well-being, and pay, and someone who really can be innovative in our approach to bring back the students that have left Orange County Public Schools.”
Orange County), aggressive immigration enforcement under the Trump administration, and the expansion of the state’s taxpayer-funded school voucher program that has incentivized sending kids to less-regulated private schools or taking up homeschooling, at the expense of a more fully funded public education system.
“I support a parent’s right to choose, and I support choice,” Gallo affirmed. But she takes issue with the lack of accountability for private schools, compared to the public education system. And she’d like to find ways to better meet students where they’re at — for instance, building more microschools that are tailored to provide specialized, more personalized educational programming — to better engage them.
“I have lots of ideas of ways to bring back students, to engage students, to bring them back to school while still keeping the academic standards high, our student outcomes high, and meeting them where they are by providing that flexibility that we know that they want in public schools,” she said.
Farrant did not respond to a request for an interview from Orlando Weekly. In a questionnaire published by the Orange Observer, however, Farrant described herself as a “passionate mama bear” who “has consistently advocated for policies that strengthen our schools and protect students.”
She told the Orlando Sentinel,“When I win this, the entire county — and I pray the state and the nation — will see that God always gets the victory.”
On her campaign website, Farrant lists priorities that include tackling the country’s “literacy crisis,” restoring trust in public education, and championing a “classical, common-sense education.”
Since her election to the school board four years ago, Farrant has also faced backlash from LGBTQ+ rights advocates — and her fellow board members — for speaking against the designation of LGBTQ+ Pride Month by the district and for claiming that the district prioritizes LGBTQ+ students over heterosexual students.
The Moms for Liberty group is known for its MAGA-aligned positions: pro-book banning, antiLGBTQ+ Pride; pro-Christianity,

Gallo has been endorsed by the LGBTQ+ rights group Equality Florida, the Orange County teachers’ union, the gun control advocacy group Moms Demand Action, several business groups and more than a dozen Democratic state and local elected officials, including Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings and U.S. Congressman Maxwell Frost.
“We’re in support of Angie Gallo for school board chair because she stands with teachers,” Clinton McCracken, president of the Orange County Classroom Teachers Association, told Orlando Weekly in an emailed statement.
The Orange County Classroom Teachers Association is a labor union that represents more than 13,000 teachers, school psychologists and instructional staff in the school district. The union, and its parent organization — the statewide Florida Education Association — have been targeted for elimination by DeSantis through recent union reform laws, as well as by anti-union groups allied with Moms for Liberty, such as the right-wing Freedom Foundation.
“[Farrant] has spent her time on the board fanning the flames of culture wars, promoting book bans, has tried to remove LGBTQ+ recognition months and is openly transphobic,” said McCracken, a middle school art teacher who is open about being gay himself. “The people of Orange County have always supported educators and our amazing students, and the way to do that is to vote for Angie Gallo.”
Unlike Farrant, McCracken pointed out, Gallo has supported dedicating a portion of the school district’s one-mill referendum — a property tax — to increasing teacher pay. She supported a change to the referendum language to accomplish this earlier this year, to no avail. The one-mill tax, representing $1 of every $1,000 of the taxable property value, will be on the ballot of Orange County voters for renewal this fall. Orange County voters have renewed the one mill every four years since 2010 to help fund teacher and coach positions, field trips, charter schools and other school programs.
“She’s said some remarks from the dais that have been hurtful to our students and have made them feel unsafe within our schools,” Gallo said, adding that Farrant has made a concerted effort to inappropriately “push her Christian ideas and ideologies onto the school board.”
Farrant has received endorsements from the Orange County GOP, several Republican state lawmakers, and Stand Up for Medical Freedom — an anti-vaccine group aligned with the Trump-endorsed “Make America Healthy
Gallo told the Weekly she supports the idea of allowing voters a say on whether to approve an additional 0.25 mill referendum in 2028, where 100 percent of the revenue generated from that extra tax would go toward increasing educator pay.
The tax on homeowners from that additional 25 cents per $1,000 of property value, Gallo argued, “would be minimal.” She believes voters should have the opportunity to decide for themselves. “I want the voters to decide if they would once again support teachers in the form of dollars that would go directly into the pockets of our teachers and our classified staff.”
The upcoming school board chair race will be decided in the August primary election, which takes place Monday, Aug. 18. Early voting, already underway, runs through Sunday, Aug. 16. mschueler@orlandoweekly.com

National Labor Relations Board orders
SeaWorld Orlando to post notices admitting they violated federal labor law

In a victory for divers at Orlando’s Discovery Cove who voted to unionize last year, the National Labor Relations Board has ruled that SeaWorld has violated federal labor law by failing to recognize the divers’ union.
The board ruled last week that SeaWorld of Florida — doing business as Discovery Cove — unlawfully refused to recognize workers’ vote to unionize and refused to provide workers with information needed to begin bargaining a contract.
SeaWorld is now being ordered to recognize the union, begin bargaining talks and display a notice in conspicuous employee areas, such as break rooms, that explicitly states the company violated federal labor law.
Maintenance divers at Discovery Cove, the Orlando park owned by the same company as
SeaWorld, voted unanimously to unionize with the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 30 last May. Workers aimed to address concerns about low wages and to have a voice on the job.
Maintenance divers oversee the underwater cleaning and maintenance of Discovery Cove’s animal habitats and exhibits, for the safety of both animals and guests who visit the resort’s pools, rivers, lagoons and man-made beaches.
“They’re not looking to ask for unrealistic advances in wages,” union representative Mike Smith told Orlando Weekly earlier this year. “You know, they’re basically just looking to get the proper compensation for the job that they’re doing, day in and day out — and mostly night in, night out, because they do work the overnight [shift].”
According to the NLRB, SeaWorld has refused to recognize the fact that the divers unionized or began bargaining a union contract, in violation of the National Labor Relations Act.
Under the act, private employers have a legal duty to bargain “in good faith” with a union that has been certified by the federal labor board as the workers’ bargaining representative. Only about 6 percent of Florida’s workforce has union representation.
Still, even in states with higher union membership rates, it’s not uncommon for employers that oppose their workers’ unionization efforts, like SeaWorld, to play hardball in response and dig their heels in.
“Currently, it is a common tactic for employers to slow-walk the bargaining process because there are no penalties for doing so, and delay frustrates workers and undermines their union,” the Economic Policy Institute explains.
The labor board, in last week’s ruling, also ordered SeaWorld to distribute and post a notice to employees onsite at Discovery Cove — a shame-on-me notice of sorts — that explicitly states that SeaWorld violated federal labor law. The notice clearly spells out the employees’ legal right to join, form or assist a union under the NLRA. The notices must be posted onsite in “conspicuous places” for at least 60 days.

Orlando International Airport (MCO) remained the busiest airport in Florida last year, and the seventh-busiest in the nation, according to a new national airport rankings report.
Orlando International Airport welcomed 57,675,573 passengers in 2025, up just under 1 percent from last year, according to the Airports Council International North America, an advocacy organization for airports that releases airport rankings annually. The Orlando airport ranked just above Miami International Airport in the number of passengers it welcomed in 2025. Orlando International Airport attributed its slight rise in passengers last year — 463,945 more
passengers than in 2024 — in part to international travel, citing three new nonstop routes opened from Orlando: Paris, Munich and Madrid.
Overall, Orlando saw a roughly 8 percent increase in its international travelers in 2025 and a slight (0.4 percent) decline in domestic passengers. Nearly 8.5 million passengers traveled to MCO from overseas last year alone.
Lance Lyttle, CEO of the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority — a government agency that oversees MCO — said the airport’s 2025 passenger numbers are “reflective of Central Florida’s continued growth and global appeal.”
“They also show why it is important to embrace a strategic vision that focuses on
enhancing customer service while addressing critical infrastructure needs,” he added.
Nationally, overall passenger traffic fell by 0.7 percent in 2025, according to the new rankings report, demonstrating that MCO bucked the trend. While international passenger traffic grew by 0.3 percent nationwide, domestic traffic declined by 1 percent.
The top six busiest U.S. airports in 2025, by passenger traffic, were Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, Chicago O’Hare International Airport, Denver International Airport, Los Angeles International Airport and John F. Kennedy International Airport.

The union filed an unfair labor practice complaint with the NLRB last June, alleging that SeaWorld was unlawfully refusing to bargain with them. This latest NLRB ruling comes in response to those allegations as well as evidence collected from SeaWorld – or, in this case, a lack of — to explain the theme park operator’s refusal to bargain.
“These workers deserve to have their voices heard and respected,” Lynn argued. “We won’t walk away from this fight.”
Discovery Cove is an “all-inclusive day resort” owned by United Parks & Resorts, a global theme park and entertainment company that also owns and operates Aquatica, Busch Gardens, SeaWorld, Adventure Island and Sesame Place.
SeaWorld has been accused by a separate union representing security guards at SeaWorld Orlando of refusing to recognize their union or bargain a union contract with them, too. There are also pending complaints filed by the IUOE against Discovery Cove over allegedly firing or otherwise disciplining several divers at Discovery Cove in retaliation for their organizing activity.
“These workers deserve better,” Smith told Orlando Weekly when one of the disciplined divers reached out to us to share his concerns about the issue earlier this year.

Orlando International Airport, located in close proximity to the so-called “Happiest Place on Earth,” jumped up to seventh place in 2025 from ninth place in 2024, according to the GOAA.“The airport’s standing as the busiest airport in Florida demonstrates strong demand for the region and reinforces Orlando’s position as a premier destination for visitors, connections, and business investment,” the GOAA said in a news release.
The release of the rankings comes as MCO continues to undergo changes outlined in the GOAA’s strategic plan for the airport, approved last October.
Upcoming projects include added concessions and restaurants — including those operating under locally respected names like Stasio’s Deli, Seito Sushi, Maxine’s on Shine and Otto’s High Dive — as well as parking upgrades, a new baggage handling system for Terminals A and B, additional and upgraded restrooms, and a new car rental lobby for Terminal C.
The airport’s grand strategic plan, dubbed “Elevating MCO,” is expected to cost roughly $6 billion total, with an estimated completion in 2030.

Returning to the heart of Orlando after a star turn at the Immerse festival downtown earlier this year, the Orlando Vocal Collective reform like a vocal Voltron in collaboration with Creative City Project this week.
Founded in 2025 by Chris Keough, the initial spark of inspiration for Orlando Vocal Collective was what he saw as a need for community in the ever-growing creative scene of Orlando.
“I selfishly have the opportunity to create the community that I want to see,” Keough tells Orlando Weekly. “And I think that it’s important to know that, in a lot of places, especially as an independent creative, you won’t fit in a lot of places. Your dreams, passions, ideas and things won’t always be understood. You won’t always be celebrated. In fact, sometimes you’ll be pushed out. And I think in those times where you’re searching for things and you can’t find anything that fits you,
you have to create your own thing. But then I’m realizing more and more every day, nothing worth creating is created alone.”
The group’s debut was at the Immerse festival, a performing-arts takeover of downtown Orlando’s streets hosted and produced by Creative City Project. The Collective performed a ferocious open-air set, reimagining music by Beyoncé, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston and many other crucial pop hits. At their debut, OVC was 20 vocalists strong. These performances will feature 12 singers and a four-piece band. The process of choosing OVC members is led by Keough. He looks not only for talent, but for people who have inspired him and that he wants to collaborate with. He’s attempting to bring together disparate scenes and foster unique creative alchemy.

that we’ve been entrusted with is to not just find artists, although we support a lot of individual artists, but to also be really strategic about how we’re partnering with the gatherers. And Chris is a great example of that.”
Throughout their friendship they have collaborated on many projects, including the predecessor of OVC known as Wavelength. The original concept of Wavelength was an idea of NeSmith’s to take people on a journey of connection through sound and light. It came to life with 21 vocalists in 2024 and was the first time that Keough organized a vocal ensemble for a project like this.
“I saw through Wavelength that this large ensemble affected a group of people who were not necessarily vocalists, who maybe don’t even consider themselves artists, but they were moved by this experience, and by these sounds, and by these sounds being multiplied by 20. And so, just seeing the idea, the need, and then the possibility and opportunity for more is how [OVC] came about,” Keough says.
Every part of the experience with OVC is carefully planned out. Keough has a meticulous creative vision that starts with building the world for the audience before even thinking about the setlist.
“I have to create the scene first [before writing]. The show has been being worked on for months. But it was the aesthetic. It was the feeling. It was the logistics. That all has to be done, so that way, I know it’s done. Every time I do something musical, I think if something doesn’t quite land as authentic with an audience, it’s because all of those things are not aligned,” Keough says.
This upcoming show is in a unique setting: 1010 West. The event venue is traditionally used as a wedding venue, not for concerts. It is located in Parramore, a historically Black neighborhood of Orlando.

Keough and NeSmith have history far predating OVC. The pair met singing on the steps of Universal Studios as colleagues and since then have formed a formidable friendship.
“One of the things that I have seen to be really impactful when it comes to cultivating a creative community is finding the gatherers, the people who are getting other creative people together to produce and create something,” NeSmith says.

The venue is a converted industrial hangar that provides a soaring setting perfect for the powerhouse voices of the collective. In similar fashion to their debut appearance, the collective will be reimagining music by Janet Jackson, Earth Wind & Fire, Beyoncé and more.
“My goal is to uplift and platform these artists in ways that show you what I see in them,” Keough says.“And I think you will see that sense of community and togetherness on stage, but you will also see it shine through these people in a whole new way.” arts@orlandoweekly.com

Meet the Orlando creatives tasked with bringing Little Radical Theatrics’ production of nearly 25-year-old musical Hairspray into the current cultural moment
I’m old enough to remember when the 1988 film Hairspray by John “The Pope of Trash” Waters was condemned by conservatives for its depiction of race relations in Civil Rightsera Baltimore, and for casting a drag queen in a major role. Nearly 40 years later, the 2002 Broadway adaptation it spawned (which was itself turned into a 2007 film with John Travolta) has become a big hit for community theaters, even as it remains a lighting rod for similar reasons as the original — only now, the pushback is coming from progressives.
Little Radical Theatrics (littleradicaltheatrics inc.com) returns to the Dr. Phillips Center’s Alexis and Jim Pugh Theater next weekend (Aug. 14-16) with their take on Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan’s musical, and cultural coordinator L’Niarae Blevins and co-choreographer Chris Payen recently took time to talk with me about why Hairspray remains compelling through all the controversies.
Blevins hails from Ohio and Payen came up from South Florida, but aside from that these two key members of Hairspray’s creative team have a remarkable amount in common. Both caught the performing bug at an early age — she at age 11 in a middle-school improv sketch comedy troupe, he as a young dancer obsessed with ’90s R&B videos — and both enjoyed formative experiences as ensemble members in previous productions of Hairspray. They also both arrived in Orlando during college; Payen studied theater at UCF and remained here to work in the theme parks, while Blevins became a Tower of Terror bellhop during her stint in Disney’s College Program before becoming a Montessori educator.
A final common link between Blevins and Payen is co-choreographer Arius West, who introduced both to Little Radical Theatrics. She was “randomly” introduced to him during a Central Florida Community Arts summer camp, while Payen has known his “bestie” for over a decade. “We’re like each other’s understudies, that’s the joke that I have,” Payen says of collaborating with West, who was called away mid-rehearsals on a cruise ship contract. “We have very similar systems, pictures, visions. … If you want that style, that vision, that vibe, that energy — the flavors of what we do — if you want all that, and you can’t get one of them, get the other. So it was a no-brainer to do it together.”
The choreographer’s role is commonly understood, but cultural coordinators aren’t (yet) as widely known. “It’s like dramaturgy, except you’re focusing [on] pinpointing exactly what’s happening right then at that time,” explains Blevins, who studied theater for social change and presented an anti-racism project under Stamped From the Beginning author Ibram X. Kendi.“My job was to come in during table work with our wonderful director Travis [Eaton and the actors], and make sure that they’re understanding some of the cultural climate around the world of Hairspray.”
That included asking each ensemble member to study an activist from the period; their picks included Marsha P. Johnson, Huey P. Newton and Zora Neale Hurston. “It’s to bring light to the characters in a way that’s different from directing, and in a way that’s different from choreographing. It’s more to bring light to their mindsets.”
Despite the team’s intentionality, LRT’s social media posts announcing Hairspray attracted comments criticizing the nontraditional casting of certain roles, as well as the “white savior
syndrome”that some say spoils the story. “There’s a lot of moments in Hairspray where I feel like as a society we have evolved, and there’s a better way to say it,” says Blevins, who (like Payen) readily acknowledges the show’s problematic elements. “I’m proud of people who are able to see the show, and they’re able to point out what’s wrong with it. In some retrospects, that is the point. … It’s for discussion, it’s for conversation [and] maybe making people have conversations they normally wouldn’t have.”
At the same time, “we can still find so much good in it rather than bad — things to appreciate [like] a story that we still want to tell. Because it holds such a personal, monumental, special place in my heart, it’s one of those shows where it’s hard to let go,” says Payen. “You can still find somebody that it could speak to, somebody that it can reach, [and] I think that is the importance of theater at the end of the day.”
Regardless of any early online outcry, at the time of our interview Hairspray’s entire threeday run was already only 10 tickets away from completely selling out, which Blevins presents as evidence of the community’s support.
“Community theater should be something where everybody puts in what they can; it’s a shared responsibility to entertain the community in which you serve,” says Blevins, who highlights participants’ rare opportunity to work on a professional-quality stage like Dr. Phillips’ Pugh Theater.“I wanted to be a part of this show because I know that Hairspray at the end of the day still has a good message. I know the people who are in the show have great hearts. … That’s what being a part of this show was: coming in and being a part of a community that I love, and letting our community see us the way that they know that we are.”

Cuca Libre in MetroWest dances to a tasty Brazilian beat

Cuca Libre. Yes, Cuca, not Cuba. Cuca as in the Brazilian slang for mind. Libre like free, but not free of charge. Cuca libre like carefree — like free and easy — like leave your worries at the door when you walk into Cuca Libre in MetroWest, where the playful approach to its brand name carries over to the menu and vibe.
Brazilian celebrity Zilu Camargo and business partner Jackson Martins da Costa are the duo behind this Orlando outpost of the small restaurant chain born in Nova Era, Brazil. Camargo, who lives locally, was present during each of our visits gently orchestrating Cuca Libre’s lively interplay of conviviality and comfort food — food that is big and bad for you in the best of ways. Expect fun munchie fare — burgers, pizza, pasta and traditional Brazilian bites — enjoyed in a smartly spaced dining room that frequently bounces to the beat of live music. We visited twice, and twice waited for tardy friends over friendly chatter and nibbles. We found perfectly crisped tapioca cubes ($17) with spicy pepper jelly blandly soulful but with a pleasant little kick — think Ed Sheeran post-espresso — and chicken croquettes ($11) dipped in green mayo subtly satisfying. But
starters weren’t where things really got started.
In the beginning there was the Genesis burger ($19), towering and impressive — a sloppy commitment that, once made, has you thanking its creator. Stacked with beef, Brazilian grilled cheese sealed in molasses, crispy kale confetti, guava ketchup and tomato confit, it oozes with burger-porn main character energy. Speaking of characters, there’s one named Steak n’ Fries in the Brazilian movie City of God. The favela-dwelling street urchin has a singular mission: to prove himself a man. Picanha steak ($26) with yuca fries at Cuca Libre is indeed “man food” — simple, satisfying and best enjoyed with a frosty Hofbräu ($9).
I have a weakness for meat-and-bean cuisine like cassoulet or fabada, and the feijoada ($24) at Cuca Libre had me a touch wobbly in the knees. It’s Brazil’s national dish and was one of the best bites to hit our lips: a hearty stew of black bean and mystery meat (carne seca? paio?) with some assembly required. Add-ins and add-ons included fluffy rice, farofa (toasted cassava flour that lends savory crunch), hot sauce, molho campanha (think pico de gallo), pork crackling and greens.

dedicated to pizza — both Brazilian and Napoletana. Brazilian pizza is a lot like pizza-pizza. More mischievous perhaps. Sweet in some cases. A tablemate shared her greatest fear isn’t public speaking or spiders — it’s ordering pizza that arrives with too little cheese. Have no fear. Queijo is here. And there. And there. Cheese is prominent, especially in a quattro formaggi ($23) of mozzarella, provolone, Parmesan and creamy catupiry. A margherita ($19) with fresh basil and tomato ate perfectly well, but it was the signature Cuca Libre ($24) with its carne seca and arracha cream that proved the most memorably satisfying.
There’s a saying from São Paulo: “Tudo acaba em pizza (everything ends in pizza).” Much of life’s ugly nonsense is ultimately swept under the rug, the broom being the sharing of food, of pizza. This was the case with us; the everyday worries of the world were swept away with each cheesy bite. Muito obrigado (thank you very much) is the extent of my Portuguese. Jacksonville “nu-emocore” band Gilt released their sophomore album, I Saw Myself in the Black Screen, through Orlando imprint Smartpunk earlier this summer, and it sees the young band stretching their legs creatively in new and adventurous ways.
Blending emo screams, dizzying post-hardcore drums and undeniable nu-metal melodies, their new music has a nostalgic, skramzy early-Hot Topic vibe while pushing forward through experimental off-ramps. The band typically leans more emo, but injected other genres into their latest album seamlessly.
“If you’re in Jacksonville, you’re gonna listen to Limp Bizkit,” Tyler Fieldhouse, guitarist and founding member of Gilt, tells Orlando Weekly. “We talked a lot about that stuff, and it was important to work that in and be like, ‘How do we take enjoyable dumb riff-music and mix that with twink, screamo, frantic jazz,’ you know, whatever. That was our whole thing:
How do we put this stuff together?”
While partly a double entendre for the unpleasant emotion, Fieldhouse explained that the band’s name refers to the flecks of gold leaf in classical paintings, a choice influenced by his fine art degree.
“I just like artsy bullshit. I like emo, I like being a fine artist, so it’s something beautiful that’s also cold and metallic and kind of inhuman, so it’s the dichotomy of that,” Fieldhouse says. “It’s also a mom’s shopping website.”
The record focuses on media as a form of escapism, with an anime-inspired album cover and song titles like “Reverse Bear Trap” and “Seattle Day 2” serving as references bridging the gap between these media and reality. Lead vocalist Asha Locke says that in coming up with the album’s title, they landed a lyric referencing the movie I Saw the TV Glow directed by Jane Schoenbrun. She says the band felt the resulting I Saw Myself in the Black Screen was most representative of the album’s theme and connected best
to the other references littered throughout the album. Fieldhouse offers that standout screamo track “Drywall” is the thematic core of the record in this story of getting lost in media.
“That’s the real character, and then everything that’s insulating it above and below, creating this barrier around it, are all these media-title tracks,” Fieldhouse says. “It’s a character that’s trying to insulate themselves from the real world with media, and then we’ve also physically structured the album that way.”
Fieldhouse formed Gilt in 2017 and Locke joined a year later, originally as the drummer, after covering Paramore songs in her high school pop-punk band. Fieldhouse says they were first inspired to create after catching The Front Bottoms live.
“I was like, ‘Wow, this band fucking sucks. I can’t believe how low the bar of entry is.’ And then I was like,‘Oh, why am I like holding myself to this like really high standard?’” Fieldhouse says. “So I

made a Front Bottoms-esque band, and that went for like two years. We toured a crazy amount for me never having been in bands.”
Fieldhouse recalls these memories fondly while working on newer creative projects and coming up with concepts out of left field that they perhaps aren’t as confident about. Yet.
“When you’re doing something goofy and you actually just commit to the bit and do it, that is the best art always,” Fieldhouse says. “When you’re like,‘Hey, you know what would be funny,’ and then if you actually go through the whole process, that’s always the best material in any creative field.”

Orlando’s current young jazz scene is a high-minded generation with serious artists making serious art. It is, unquestionably, to our betterment. But you don’t dance with your brain.
Golden Flower — the quintet of Caitlin Pequignot (violin), Shawn Villanueva (trumpet, flugelhorn), Patrick Moreno (Rhodes, piano), Brandon Kyle Miller (upright bass, electric bass) and Cameron Gholami (drums, percussion) — are one of Orlando’s more accessible young jazz acts. They pack heavy cred in their affiliations with groups like Answers, Alterity Chamber Orchestra, JK & the Contraband, Sooza Brass Band and Bebop Bounty Big Band. But in Golden Flower, they keep it cool. They’ve got all the skills. They just aren’t nerds about it.
After holding down a residency at The Nook since 2022, Golden Flower have at last bottled their vim in a new debut studio album. Titled Are You Even Awake?, it’s 11 tracks of jazz that’s consciously open in both mind and heart. Stylistically, Golden Flower’s progressive sound is unboxed by jazz orthodoxy. It’s modern jazz recontextualized with unconventional cornerstones like nontraditional instrumentation (violin, effects) and alternative influences (prog, electronic, world).
While their playing has technical rigor, Golden Flower’s soul flits with an airborne spirit, unburdened by any leaden allegiance to gravitas. They’re legit players who aren’t afraid to be playful. The street-smart “Distant Glow” struts with funk and groove. “Piecemeal” features a whimsical dance between string and horn. And the effects woven throughout give the album occasional psych expansion.
With this album, Golden Flower claim their niche with a sense of vivacity and adventure. Sonic novelty and free spirit converge to push boundaries without academic baggage. Orlando

Voodoo: DJ Kurt Rambus & Mr. Mogembo: Orlando is famously a city of DJs. But this weekend’s “Voodoo” — featuring DJs Kurt Rambus and Mr. Mogembo — is not your basic “party jamz” deal. This limited series is a voyage of concept, which is both laudable and expected of these two figures. Nigel John (the brain behind Kurt Rambus) and Mr. Mogembo are among the city’s most visionary and progressive DJs, and this joint will be a plunge into the deep, international shadows of electronic music. Expect the hexing tentacles of African, Arabic, Indian and Latin sounds to be between the beats.
It’ll be a tryst between the exotic and the familiar that’ll make for a night of intoxicating originality. (10 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, Lil Indie’s, free)
Ann Yao & Rui Yang: For as much as we Americans revere the guitar, the popular conception of it is tragically narrow. It’s about to get global up in here with Timucua’s International Guitar Festival, the monthlong series kicking off this week. This celebration of strings begins simultaneously near and far with Ann Yao and Rui Yang, two local practitioners of an ancient craft from a world away. Specialists in traditional Chinese instruments, Yao plays the guzheng (plucked zither) and Yang the erhu (two-stringed violin). Together, through original and modern compositions, they’ll give proper spotlight to the classic Eastern dance between these two timelessly elegant instruments. Afterward, the festival will showcase guitar music from Israel, Colombia, Italy and America throughout August. (7:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 9, Timucua Arts Foundation, $22.50-$30)
Retained Surgical Instrument, Pariah, Gnarcoossee, Nocturnal Dawn: Although their name isn’t as spectacular as, say, Anal Stabwound (who play Conduit two nights later), Boston extreme metal band Retained Surgical Instrument pack the shock to thrill the diehards, gag the normies and make the open-minded chuckle. Sometimes, the line between obscene and brilliant is a fine, hilarious one. Tallying their grind, gore and song titles (“Cojones Tostones,” “Cock on the Cob,” “Piss Chugging Contest”), Retained Surgical Instrument make a plausible case for some sort of sick genius. Bazaar Florida Tour
The folks behind Bazaar47 in Gainesville are back on the road for another summer tour, setting up shop in select cities with a heady mix of artists, vendors, musicians, artisans and workshops.
