Orange County task force recommended tourist tax funding for big projects downtown
Orange County’s Tourist Development Tax Citizen Advisory Task Force recommended funding for 12 projects vying for billions in TDT funds, and turned down some fairly high-profile initiatives too. Projects thumbs-upped by the task force include Florida Citrus Sports’ request to build a new parking garage and events center for Camping World Stadium; an expansion to the Dr. Phillips Center downtown that will include an outdoor amphitheater; Dr. Phillips Charities’ plan for a history and cultural center in Eatonville; a proposal from Creative City Project for funding for the Immerse Festival downtown; and the Orange Audubon Society’s proposed nature center at Lake Apopka. Just as notably, the task force decided against a proposal to expand the Orange County Convention Center to the tune of over $523 million and the Orlando Dreamers’ $975 million request to help fund the construction of a baseball stadium in hopes of hosting a professional baseball team in Orlando.

Disney workers urged Disney to drop contract with third-party restaurant operator
An estimated 200 Disney World workers rallied last week in Kissimmee, just a few miles outside Disney property, to demand Disney drop its current agreements with the Patina Group. The third-party restaurant operator on Disney property is facing ongoing allegations of wage theft, ignoring sexual harassment, and unlawfully firing a young cashier over her leading role in an ongoing unionization drive. The Patina Group, a subsidiary of the multinational food service company Delaware North, is the largest operator of restaurants on Disney property that aren’t directly operated or owned by Disney itself. It owns and runs five restaurants at Disney Springs — Enzo’s Hideaway, Maria & Enzo’s, Morimoto Asia, Pizza Ponte and The Edison — as well as Tutto Italia, Via Napoli, Tutto Gusto and Space 220 at Epcot.

Orange County elections office took heat over ditching sample ballots for the primary
The Orange County Supervisor of Elections Office faced backlash over its decision to ditch the normal practice of mailing sample ballots to in-person voters for the 2026 primary election. The office, with seemingly no notice, opted instead to send voters an informational mailer featuring a digital QR code where voters could access candidate information online, sparking criticism and confusion. The Orange County chapter of the League of Women Voters contacted the elections office to share their concerns. Other advocates have similarly reached out, urging the SOE to reverse course. And the feedback has evidently been so cutting that the office confirmed it will bring back print sample ballots for the November general election. “The primary gave us an opportunity to introduce a new way of accessing ballot information, and the feedback we’ve received has reinforced the value of providing both formats,” Supervisor of Elections Office spokesperson Blake Summerlin told Orlando Weekly in a statement.

DeSantis said Central Florida will start testing flying cars by end of year
Gov. Ron DeSantis and Transportation Secretary Jared Perdue repeatedly referenced 1960s cartoon The Jetsons while announcing that testing on electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft will be underway by the end of the year at the SunTrax test facility in Polk County. Earlier this year, DeSantis signed HB 1093, legislation allowing the Florida Department of Transportation to fund 100 percent of the project costs for a public vertiport if federal funds are unavailable. If federal funds are available, FDOT may fund up to 80 percent of the nonfederal share. DeSantis also signed a wide-ranging transportation package in 2025 that required the transportation department to develop a plan for advanced air mobility with the Department of Commerce. The law also required advances in aviation technology to be included in the annual transportation work program.
ICE reached a new high in monthly arrests
Federal immigration agents are employing new tactics — from arresting academics at airports to setting up a checkpoint at a popular creek in a national forest — to boost their arrest numbers, leading to more arrests in July than in any previous month of the Trump administration. Though it is striving to fulfill the White House’s demand for more arrests, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is still falling short of the Trump administration’s announced goal of 2,000 arrests per day (down from 3,000 per day under Kristi Noem). The Department of Homeland Security, which oversees ICE, told Stateline it arrested about 51,000 immigrants in July, up from 43,000 in June and the highest number recorded by the Trump administration. The administration did not release state-specific numbers. The department said that last month it arrested an average of 20-40 people per day at airports, as federal agents targeted passengers with expired visas. According to media reports, those arrested last month included a Cameroonian researcher at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore — a Fulbright scholar — and a University of Maryland instructor from Ethiopia who was detained as he returned from a conference where he accepted a Teacher of the Year award. Advocates suggested immigrants with expired visas should not travel without consulting an attorney. ‘ORANGE CHICKEN’

Orange County leaders explored options to prevent another Sloth World tragedy
Orange County commissioners advanced a proposal to make it harder for commercial establishments to import exotic wildlife for entertainment purposes (i.e., for profit), just months after an investigation exposed dozens of sloth deaths at the never-opened Sloth World Orlando tourist attraction. Potential exemptions from new restrictions on imports could include accredited zoos, wildlife rehabilitation organizations, educational institutions, and “qualified conservation and sanctuary organizations.” While local governments have limited authority to regulate wildlife imports — that’s largely the purview of the state and federal government — county commissioner Nicole Wilson said she hopes the county can explore making regulatory changes within the bounds of local authority to prevent a Sloth World tragedy from happening again. More than 50 wild sloths imported from overseas by the owners of Sloth World in 2024 and 2025 died either in transit or after being held at a warehouse that lacked running water and electricity. The Orange County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating. orlandoweekly.com ● AUG. 19-25, 2026 ● ORLANDO WEEKLY

The Orlando International Fringe Theatre Festival wrapped up its 35th annual installment on Memorial Day with 116 sold-out performances (up from 70 last year) and a total of 43,901 tickets sold to 63,096 patrons, returning a near-record $518,196 to over 1,700 local and traveling artists. Best Local Author
Orlando drag performer Myki Meeks won Season 18 of RuPaul’s Drag Race earlier this year, snatching the crown and cementing her place in the drag pantheon. Meeks’ drag life is one that is very enmeshed with the City Beautiful. Maybe you’ve seen her perform as one of the core members of drag night Off the Record. Maybe you’ve seen her hosting local YouTube drag competition The Gig. Maybe you caught her as part of the Ren’s Nosferatu aftershow, V-Bar. She’s long been an integral part of our scene. Now that she’s conquered the Ru-verse, the world is surely hers. mykimeeks.com

Best Ren-Renovations: Renaissance Theatre Co.
Ivanhoe performing-arts hub the Renaissance Theatre Co. was shuttered last autumn due to permitting issues with the city. The Ren soldiered on, putting on their annual Halloween production, Nosferatu, and drag night OTR in venues around the city. In late November, they found a temporary home on Church Street downtown in the former Fringe ArtSpace. After months of renovations, theater staff were given the green light by the city to reopen their Ivanhoe headquarters on lucky Friday the 13th in March. Since then, everything has been coming up Ren. 415 E. Princeton St., rentheatre.com

Best Underwater Love: Dave Plotkin Memorial Aquarium at Stardust Video and Coffee
Activist, organizer, DJ, designer, Orlando Weekly staffer (we could very easily go on) Dave Plotkin passed away last year, leaving Orlando much the poorer for his absence. To honor his friend, whimsical surrealist and Orlando arts fixture Doug Rhodehamel began cutting out cartoonish and angular cardboard fish and suspending them from the ceiling of Orlando venue and coffee spot Stardust Video. These same otherworldly fish swim right above the heads of customers, collectively populating the Dave Plotkin Memorial Aquarium, now a permanent installation at the Audubon Park destination, to memorialize Plotkin in perpetuity. 1842 E. You never really know how good you had it ’til it’s gone. And long gone are the days where we could saunter into a cinematic viewing experience that had it all. It was a little haunted, smelled a little rank and sometimes even had working A/C. It was the Orlando Premiere 14 Fashion Square movie theater, and it was perfect. Tickets were the cheapest around. You had to journey through a dead mall to find it. It offered an immersive experience you just can’t recreate, even in the nation’s tourism capital. There are plenty of ways to be bad in Orlando, but Volume just might be the best. The drag and live music spectacle takes place a handful of times throughout the year, leaving us always wanting more. Often in theme and always over-the-top, Volume offers a space to get up close and personal with some of Orlando’s most devilish drag stars — headed up by host Davi Oddity — embracing the city’s darkest fantasies. It’s not all R-rated excitement, though. Volume is a community of artists and performers committed to creating a safe space and a good time, even if it is a little bad. instagram.com/ volume.orl

Best Saturday Morning Munch: Kapé Kaya
Pastry chef extraordinaire and James Beard-nominated cookbook author Clarice Lam can add “queue-maker” to her layered résumé, thanks to her Saturday morning bakery pop-up at Kaya. The lines outside form well before the 9:30 a.m. opening and curl around the restaurant like the laminated rings circling Lam’s deeply filled mango sticky rice danish. And while it may feel criminal ravaging her flaky works of art fusing Filipino, Chinese and French flourishes (the Hong Kong milk tea egg custard tart had no chance), Lam makes unrepentant culinary vandals out of us. 618 N. New York City may have Katz’s Deli, but we’ve got Leiah and, take it from us, their pastrami sandwich blows the version served at that Lower East Side institution out of the briny water. The secret: wagyu brisket from Washington’s Mishima Reserve that’s brined for a week, smoked and steamed. It’s carved into thick-cut slabs that are placed onto sourdough ciabatta along with mustard, Beemster gouda and pickled onions. The sandwich has supplied Leiah with its fair share of “I’ll have what she’s having” moments. 409 N. Magnolia Ave., leiahrestaurant.com

BEST OF ORLANDO: FOOD & DINING
Best Soup du Jour: Tom yum noodle soup at Sabai Thai Street Food
Mistaking Sabai’s tom yum noodle soup for common tom yum soup would be like mistaking a white Alba truffle for a white button mushroom. The star is a singular broth embodying the four S’s of Thai cooking (sweet, sour, salty and spicy) built from a very specific ratio of pork bone to chicken bone to beef bone that’s simmered for 48 hours with daikon, onions, crispy garlic, peanuts and a proprietary blend of herbs and spices. Roasted pork, ground pork, bean sprouts, peanuts, garlic, pickled radishes and a choice of rice or egg noodles lends heavy comfort. Oh, and red-hot chilies. There’s always red-hot chilies. 3333 S. Orange Ave., sabaithaistreetfood.com
Best Falafel: Seemo’s Shawarma
The recipe for these fried beauties comes from Seemo’s mother-in-law, but it’s his wife, Dooni, who makes them every day from ground chickpeas blended with parsley, cilantro, onions, sesame seeds and spices. They’re shaped into small orbs before being fried to order, and they’re arguably some of the very best falafel we’ve had on the continent. Devouring them with great abandon comes with a heavy heart, however — 70 of Dooni’s family members in Palestine’s occupied territories have been killed in the Gaza genocide. 866 S. Best BBQ Eggs Benedict: Smoke & Donuts
Many forget that the Milk District’s Smoke & Donuts, best known for their quality meats, BBQ ramen and donuts, serves one of the more unique brunches in town. We’re especially taken by their eggs Benedict selection, topped with either pulled pork, juicy pork belly or tender prime brisket. Don’t worry, you won’t miss the DJs spinning vinyl that soundtrack their ramen nights — they spin for breakfast too! 601 N. Primrose Drive, smokeanddonuts.com

BEST OF ORLANDO: FOOD & DINING
Best Mexican Food Truck: Que Chidos Tacos
Tucked between auto parts shops and tire stores on East Colonial Drive, Qué Chidos Tacos is a food truck you might miss, but definitely don’t want to. This underrated truck offers authentic Mexican food for an unbeatable quality and price, evidenced by a dedicated fanbase of nearby workers. With fresh aguas frescas, creamy horchata, tortas, flautas, burritos and tacos from carnitas to lengua — all for $3 a pop — this truck is there for you when you need a quick lunch or a late-night snack. instagram. com/quechidostacos_
Best Salt and Pepper: Shakers American Cafe
There’s no such thing as a table for one at Shakers American Cafe, with hundreds of pairs of salt and pepper shakers to accompany you while you enjoy your meal. The beloved breakfast joint has been open in College Park for more than 31 years and has the seasoning, and the seasoners, to show for it. Three decades’ worth of salt and pepper shakers fill the establishment, almost guaranteeing that you can find any seasoned shape, size, color or object you can imagine. 1308 Edgewater Drive, shakersamericancafe.com
Best Carbonara: Ferratti’s
Best International Midnight Snack: Bulgogi House
Ferratti’s carbonara may be finished inside a flambéed wheel of 24-month Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese by chef-owner Daniel Ruvolo himself, but tableside theatrics aside, this is carbonara the way it’s supposed to be: no cream, just egg yolks, black pepper, guanciale, plenty of Pecorino-Romano and a superb mastery of temperature control. 3801 Avalon Park E. Blvd., instagram.com/ferrattispizzeria
When is the best time of day to eat Korean barbecue? Bulgogi House believes that the stretch between 10 p.m. and midnight is the true sweet spot. The restaurant, renowned for its well-marinated namesake beef bulgogi, offers a happy hour on its all-youcan-eat menus just in time for your midnight munchies. 705 W. Best Game of Playing Hard to Get: Those Guys Cafe
If you love a flirty game of cat and mouse, you’ll be absolutely hooked on the exclusivity that is Those Guys’ coffee. The always-on-the-move coffee truck pops up sporadically across town; you never quite know where or when (until they announce the week’s schedule on social media). Once you track ’em down, you’ll be met with a long line, lots of anticipation and, finally, some caffeinated goodness that was well worth the wait. thoseguyscafe.com

Best Taste of Sorekara Without the Price Tag: Okonomi
Dining at chef William Shen’s Michelin golden child, Sorekara, is a rarefied experience, but four hours and a $350-plus bill can be hard for many to stomach. Enter Okonomi, Shen’s 10-seat sushi counter inside Mills Market. Shen procures rare and limited selections often reserved for the Japanese domestic market for the menu at Sorekara, but those same cuts also make their way onto Okonomi’s menu, allowing guests to savor a taste of the 2-Michelin star restaurant at a fraction of the cost. 1110 E. BEST OF ORLANDO: LOCAL NOTABLES
Best The Kids Are Alright: Nicholson School of Communication and Media and College of Arts and Humanities Graduating Class of 2026
The boos heard ’round the world started right here in Orlando, when UCF graduates kicked off a national movement of grads letting the artificial intelligence industrial complex know how they really feel. A shocked commencement speaker got an earful after she told graduates of UCF’s College of Arts and Humanities and Nicholson School of Communication and Media that the rise of generative AI was “the next industrial revolution.” Not the best choice for a speech delivered to a roomful of future journalists, artists and media professionals anxious about their job prospects amidst the AI bubble, mayhap? Best Youth Mentors: Mary Bucaro, Gina Ortiz and Kristin Panzella
More than just executives who lead the inspirational Orlando Girls Rock Camp, this triumvirate are deeply invested community advocates whose work remains personal, hands-on and streetlevel. Through the guts and guidance of Bucaro, Ortiz and Panzella, OGRC has hit critical mass with its biggest scene footprint ever and a rising wave of alumnae shaping the Orlando music landscape like never before. Moreover, this year’s summer camp was its most intergenerational yet, with a record number of former campers reporting back as volunteers to pay it forward and nurture the youngest. orlandogirlsrockcamp.com
Best Underground Hero: Uncle Lou
Best Gay Coffee Influencer: Ale Scarps
Nowhere were these inhumane American times writ larger and more heartbreakingly local than in the story of Uncle Lou (born Cleon Williams). After landing in ICE custody in May, this owner of one of Orlando’s tiniest yet most foundational live music spots became a red alert, a headline and a rallying point in short, fire-catching order. Still, the cause was lost and Lou was deported back to Jamaica anyway. But he became the face that personalized the cruel zeitgeist to Orlando in ways that others couldn’t, igniting mainstream support for an underground hero.
Hankering for a new coffee spot? Look no further than Ale Scarps’ trusty “Gay Coffee Review” series on TikTok. Keeping it real, informative and, most importantly, gay, each video provides a witty overview of local caffeine culture. tiktok.com/@sum.almond.milk

BEST OF ORLANDO: LOCAL NOTABLES
Best Rescuers: Central Florida Zoo’s Veterinary and Animal Care Team
We think we can speak for Orlando at large when we say our hearts were not prepared for the shocking investigation into the Sloth World. A report by Inside Climate News published in April revealed deadly neglect and a lack of meaningful oversight by a state agency that was aware animals had died in the owners’ care. The Central Florida Zoo agreed to take in the surviving sloths from the never-opened attraction. And although some of the rescued sloths have since passed on — euthanized due to continued poor health — the veterinary and animal care team deserve to be recognized for the compassion they’ve demonstrated in taking on this recovery project. 3755 W. Best Homecoming: Brandon Wolf
Pulse survivor and equality advocate Brandon Wolf made his way back to the City Beautiful this year, and we’re all the better for it. He stepped away from his post at Equality Florida years ago to make waves in D.C. with the Human Rights Campaign. Now, Wolf’s made his way back (in time for the 10-year remembrance of the tragedy) to the advocacy organization with an even further impassioned call to political activism and working for his community.
Best Civil Disobedience: Pulse Crosswalk Painters The tug-of-war over the rainbowcolored crosswalk at the Pulse nightclub memorial is telling in all ways. To wage a purely symbolic culture war, the DeSantis-run Florida Department of Transportation spent untold thousands of taxpayer dollars on professional road crews to erase it, while the still-grieving citizens of Orlando used nothing but sidewalk chalk and pure loving conviction to continue honoring the 49 innocent lives lost in a historic instance of gun violence.

BEST OF ORLANDO: DRINKING & NIGHTLIFE
Best Monday Antidote: Neighbors’ All-Day Happy Hour
The weekend is over, and it’s time to get serious. That is, if you’re anywhere but The Neighbors. This secondfloor hidden hangout lounges atop East End Market with one of the best cures known for the Monday (and Tuesday) blues: all-day happy hour. On Mondays and Tuesdays, Orlando’s thirstiest can find wildly impressive liquid flavor in the form of $6 cocktails and $5 Old Fashioneds, beer and wine. Complement your drinks with a “cocktail pizza” bar bite and you just may find yourself mustering up an actual smile on a Monday. 3201 Corrine Drive, theneighborsorl.com

Best Merch to Ward Off ICE Agents at the Bar: Redlight Redlight’s ‘No ICE in Beer’ shirt
Audubon Park brewpub Redlight Redlight came up with the best local merch this year: something to wear anywhere you want to make sure federal immigration enforcement doesn’t feel welcome. Their very popular “No ICE in Beer” shirt was released last fall in tandem with a tasty “No ICE in Beer” Zwickel Festbier. In addition to the merch drop — created by @parkerart — the Audubon Park brewpub has hosted several benefits for the Florida Immigrant Coalition, an alliance of more than 80 organizations that advocates for the rights of immigrants statewide. 2810 Corrine Drive, redlightredlightbrewpub.com

Best Place for Those Who CAME HERE FOR LOVE: The Villa Love Island Pop-Up on Wall Street
Sometimes your strongest connection is only a bar away. The Villa was a Love Island pop-up bar that encouraged fans of the dating reality show to enjoy craft cocktails as new episodes aired live. Best Politics of Dancing: Dyke Nite
Dyke Nite is sapphic community organizing by and for “local Orlando dykes,” cultivating spaces where lesbians, queer women, trans and nonbinary Orlandoans (often overlooked members of the LGBTQ community) can build lasting connections outside the nightclub scene. Best Hard Act to Follow: Chris Cortez
Best Scene Spin-Off: Partner
In December, we lost Chris Cortez, the co-owner and face of Blue Bamboo Center for the Arts. The pioneering impresario left not just a memory, but a true legacy in the ’Boo. The Winter Park live venue evolved from an idealisticif-fringey upstart 10 years ago into one of the metro’s standard-bearing jazz rooms and formed deep, meaningful ties to the local community of musicians and residents alike. For his successors, it’s a formidable birthright to live up to. bluebambooartcenter.com
The grizzled young vets of fuzzy Orlando rock band 0 Miles Per Hour have come together for a new project: Partner. With slower grooves, heavier distortion and influences ranging from experimental band They Are Gutting a Body of Water to the acoustic riffs of Alex G, Partner don’t play it safe. They’ve released two singles — “Digging” and “Little House (Demo)” — since forming late last year. Album, please? instagram.com/partner.fl

Best DIY Kingpins: My Sister’s House
There’s DIY spirit, then there’s D!I!Y! SPIRIT!!!. When new local venue My Sister’s House was forced to suddenly relocate and ended up in a bowling alley, things didn’t look good. But the organizers and the staff behind the space made the best of a strange situation. They’ve kitted out their new backroom digs with impressive lights and a solid sound system, so that the legion of young locals and touring acts who regularly play there look and sound great. If you get there early enough to bowl a game and eat a slice before the gig, it’s like an indie-rock staycation. 10749 E. Colonial Drive, linktr.ee/ mysistershousepresents
This laundromat doubled as a faithful community space for loud live music of all varieties and listeners of all ages. It has since returned to its strictly laundry-focused roots, but for a good while, it played host to some sonic excellence. There’s something special about listening to live music in a place where you absolutely should not be: crammed next to rows of washers and dryers, standing on linoleum floors, and with the lingering aroma of detergent cutting through the crowd. 1502 Edgewater Drive

Best Salsa Band With a Congressman: La Orquesta Yeya
“Nine working musicians and a congressman” is what makes up La Orquesta Yeya, a new local salsa outfit comprised of high-school friends: Niyah Lowell, Alex Bodytko, Shawn Villanueva, Ivan Garcia, Sam Silva, Danny Carrion, Linette Perez Heredia, Jose Rojas, Daniel Chico and Orlando-based U.S. Rep. Maxwell Frost. Frost plays the timbales, joined by bandmates on cuatro guitar, violin, congas, trombone and flute. Their mission is to fuse movement (dance) with movement (progressive activism). We like it like that!
Best Agit-Pop: The audience at Ashnikko’s Hard Rock Live Show Chanting “F*ck Donald Trump”
Future-forward pop star Ashnikko visited Orlando as ambassador from the musical Smoochies World and thrilled a packed house at the Hard Rock Live back in May. Except for one person, who foolishly showed up to the very queer-friendly show wearing a (you guessed it) MAGA hat. That packed house of fantastically attired fans quite literally booed the MAGA-behatted fella right out of the building with rousing and thunderous chants of “F*ck Donald Trump.” The moment duly went viral on social media and was the rare Reel we didn’t mind the algo bombarding us with. May 5, 2026
Best Living History Lesson: Club Space Fish Reunion Weekend
Orlando’s always been accused of having no sense of history. That, thankfully, is changing and our music history is starting to be properly honored like never before. It’s therefore an opportune time for the reunion of 1990s alternative haven Club Space Fish — which was, yes, the club that GG Allin shut down, but also so much more. The full weekend blowout featured tons of band reunions, a storytelling panel discussion, the Orange Country Regional History Center officially adding Space Fish memorabilia to its collection — and the relaunch of Space Fish Records. It was a fitting tribute for a lesser-known but essential chapter of Orlando music history. May 16-17, 2026; spacefishrecords.com

WWE, eat your heart out. Mayhem on Mills, an Orlando independent wrestling outfit, redefines “bar fight” with their new “arena” at Hourglass in Longwood. This year marks eight years of Mayhem’s scrappy and sweaty spectacle. Organizers build a wrestling ring from the ground up on event days, with stacked lineups featuring Orlando’s best alongside guest grapplers from around the country. Nineteen years after Blue Man Group debuted their first Orlando production at Universal CityWalk, and six years after they closed it in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the worldrenowned troupe of percussionist performance artists are back — after a brief stop at the Immerse festival downtown — on I-Drive at Icon Park, in a new purpose-built venue beneath the Orlando Eye. The material may be new, but the underlying theme is the same: connection. Icon Park, blueman.com/ orlando

BEST OF ORLANDO: ATTRACTIONS & RECREATION
Best Makeover: Rock ’n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets
We were fighting mad when Disney announced the demolition of MuppetVision 3D. But now that Kermit and pals have evicted Aerosmith from their looping indoor coaster, we’re ready to declare it Disney’s best attraction makeover since Disneyland’s Tower of Terror was taken over by the Guardians of the Galaxy. Never thought a queue could be too short, but here we are! The skits that loop for line-standers are where the fun begins, and while the ride is essentially unchanged, Muppetized covers of Blur, Steppenwolf and Def Leppard make it all fresh. While nothing will ever replace MuppetVision in our hearts, we’re ready to forgive. Hollywood Studios, disneyworld.disney.go.com

Best Natural Lazy River: Kelly Park/Rock Springs
Of all the weird and wild tucked away in Florida’s natural spaces, Kelly Park’s Rock Springs is one of your best picks for a day of splashing around. The biggest draw is the park’s sparkling natural lazy river — and that’s no secret. It’s arguably the most exclusive natural space in Central Florida, drawing lines of cars to its entrance well before it opens (at 8 a.m., mind you). And during peak summer months, it’s nearly impossible to get into. So, when you’re lucky enough to grab a spot inside, you’d be hardpressed to find a better stream of water to drift away on. 400 E. Best Zip Line or Ropes Course:
First place: Screamin’ Gator Zip Line at Gatorland, gatorland.com
Best Local Golf Upgrade: New Driving Range at Dubsdread
More than a century after opening in College Park, Orlando’s oldest public golf course recently received an injection of modernity courtesy of a $4 million high-tech makeover of its facilities that’s anything but par for the course. Most notable are the 40 covered bays of the redesigned driving range, 36 of which are equipped with TrackMan Doppler radar allowing duffers, slicers and weekend whiffers to hone their strokes by playing famous courses virtually, all while smacking balls over water and onto an island. Best Compulsively Watchable Ads: Hair Galleria
Or should we say Hurrrrr Galleria? The new local beauty superstore hired Megan Thee Stallion hairstylist/ ShadeRoom fan-fave Jonathan Wright to hawk their “42 flavors of bootylicious hurrr” prior to their grand opening in May and through whatever mystical algorithmic alchemy, our social media feeds would not stop serving it up. We were lulled into a trance by Jonathan’s delightful accent (both “hair” and “here” pronounced “hurr”) and the cadence of exhortations like “Stop goin’ to that girl who sell you that bullshit hurr!” and “Why y’all walking ’round lookin booboo?” We’re not sure how he filmed these spots considering he’s apparently been incarcerated since March, but we never question a blessing. Stop playing! 5300 Silver Star Road, instagram.com/hairgalleria_ orlando

Best Diabolus en Marketa: Market of the Beast
Orlando is home to markets of all types; day markets, night markets, vintage markets, farmers markets, even a Goblin Market. But how about a sinister market? That’s the organizing premise behind Winter Park’s Market of the Beast. The day market features “horror, oddities and underground music” — everything from Halloween masks to hot sauce to jewelry to mountains of obscure music on CD and vinyl. One for those who like their Sunday Funday on the spooky side. Conduit, instagram. com/marketofthebeastfl

Best Making Us Eat Our Vegetables for 50 Years: Clemons Produce
Curry Ford West staple and communityfavorite market Clemons Produce will close at the end of August after more than five decades in business. Clemons has been serving Orlando since 1970 (originally as an outdoor market!), providing all manner of fresh fruits and vegetables and an Amish deli with a wide variety of meats and cheeses. It’s been a local destination for a long time, and we’ll miss the place and the staff terribly. This one hurts. 3325 Curry Ford Road, facebook.com/ clemonsproduceorlando
Best Plan for an Actual Service to Orlando Commuters: Sunrise STAR Plan
Orlando’s public transit system is, in the most literal sense, better than nothing — but you can’t say much more than that for it. Wouldn’t it be nice to have something actually good? The Orlando chapter of Sunrise Movement, a committed cadre of young people fighting for climate justice, affordable housing and better public transportation in Orlando, thinks we deserve it. Their STAR (Sunshine Transit Advancement Resolution) Plan calls for eight rapid-transit corridors with buses circulating every 15 minutes, and they have ideas for how to fund it. The plan goes before the Orange County Board of County Commissioners on Tuesday, Sept. 29. sunriseorlandofl.org/star

An unassuming screenprinting shop in Longwood has become a power player in the tour-merch game for the underground’s most evil, as Raw Power Printing has whipped up batches of extravagantly sinister black T-shirts for the local likes of Thrull, Trash Panda, Flagman and Putrid Fauve, and even rush orders for national acts in a lurch mid-tour like Riki. work, dine, and gather throughout the day - not just before and after events. The development strengthens the connection between the sports and entertainment district and the rest of downtown, creating more opportunities for businesses and visitors alike.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR CHURCH STREET? A NEW CHAPTER BEGINS IN DOWNTOWN ORLANDO Downtown Orlando has always been a place that evolves. From its historic roots to its vibrant entertainment scene, each generation has helped shape Church Street into a destination where people gather, celebrate, dine, and create memories. The area is now entering its next chapter - one defined by thoughtful investments that will make it even more connected, welcoming, and dynamic for years to come. Several transformational projects are now underway – or soon will be, each playing a unique role in reimagining how people experience downtown. Together, these projects advance the long-term vision outlined in the DTO Action Plan, prioritizing walkability, connectivity, vibrant public spaces, and continued economic growth.
Church Street Improvement Project
At the heart of this transformation is the Church Street Improvement Project, currently under construction. Rather than simply reconstructing the roadway, the project is
creating a flexible, people-first public space designed to accommodate everyday activity as well as large-scale community events. The redesigned corridor will feature a curbless streetscape, wider pedestrian areas, enhanced landscaping, decorative lighting, and infrastructure that allows the street to easily transition from vehicle traffic to outdoor dining, live entertainment, and special events. While vehicles will continue to access the corridor, the design places greater emphasis on creating a vibrant gathering place that supports businesses while encouraging visitors to linger longer.
Westcourt Orlando
Just west of Church Street, another transformative investment is helping reshape downtown. Westcourt Orlando will introduce new residential, retail, hospitality, and entertainment opportunities adjacent to Kia Center. Designed as an extension of downtown’s urban core, Westcourt will create an active neighborhood where people can live,
Construction is anticipated to begin later this year.
Reimagining Space Beneath I-4 with The Canopy
Not every great public space starts with a blank canvas. One of downtown’s most innovative projects is transforming the area beneath Interstate 4 into an active community destination. Known as The Canopy, this initiative will convert underutilized space into recreational amenities, gathering areas, and community-focused programming that reconnect neighborhoods previously divided by infrastructure. The project creates new opportunities for recreation while improving connectivity between downtown districts. By activating space that was once overlooked, The Canopy demonstrates how thoughtful urban design can unlock new possibilities and create places where residents and visitors alike can gather, explore, and connect. Construction is also expected to begin later this year, marking another milestone in downtown’s ongoing transformation.

Building Downtown’s Future Together
Each of these projects serves a different purpose, but together they share a common goal: creating a downtown that is easier to navigate, more inviting to explore and better equipped to support future growth. While construction may temporarily change familiar routes, downtown remains open for business. Restaurants continue serving guests, entertainment venues are hosting events, and parking remains readily available throughout the district. The improvements underway today are investments in tomorrow’s downtown - ones that offer more opportunities for businesses to thrive, more reasons for visitors to explore, and more welcoming public spaces for everyone to enjoy. As Church Street evolves alongside projects like Westcourt and The Canopy, the future of downtown Orlando is taking shape one block at a time. These investments are more than construction projects - they are building the foundation for a more vibrant, connected, and resilient urban core that will serve the community for decades to come. Come see the progress for yourself! Every visit to downtown supports the local businesses that make Church Street special while offering a front-row seat to its transformation. Best ‘No-Shit’ Advice to Avoid Bird Flu: Patty Sheehan
As saddening (and mildly alarming) as it was to witness dozens of iconic swans at Lake Eola die off in an outbreak of bird flu, a clip of a city leader’s advice to visitors to ward off the illness cut through in a stark moment of comic relief. At a press conference at Lake Eola Dec. 29 of last year, Orlando city commissioner Patty Sheehan informed the media, “The protocols are, don’t eat poop!” And maybe that advice shouldn’t really need to be said out loud, but we aren’t going to pretend some of you out there don’t need the common-sense check. Thanks for the heads-up, commissioner. Best Date Spot: Lake Eola Park (courtesy photo)

The grassroots Immigrants Are Welcome Here coalition — made up of over 65 faith leaders, immigrant rights groups, labor activists and other social advocacy orgs — sprung up in early 2025 to help protect immigrants here at home, as Gov. Ron DeSantis directed police agencies in Florida to serve as ICE agents. The coalition has advocated for immigrants’ rights at county meetings week after week after week, and has used public pressure to help meaningfully better the conditions of immigrants held in the local jail on behalf of ICE and ensure their due process rights are upheld. instagram. com/immigrantsrwelcome
Most Iconic Building Literally No One Has Seen the Inside of: T.G. Lee
For 101 years, the cow mural-adorned T.G. Lee dairy plant has remained one of Orlando’s most iconic pieces of architecture. It’s a significant part of the city’s history; the whole neighborhood is named in its honor, it’s long acted as a beacon in the night for Robinson Street’s most inebriated, it’s in the background of all your favorite Milk Mart photos. We may exaggerate — at 8 inches square and about 6 inches tall, the Skycraft Surplus Store O Gauge Model Railroad Kit isn’t exactly pocket-sized unless you have really big pockets. Best Page-Turning Is Political: Orlando Zine Fest
Orlando Zine Fest is the yearly showcase of local DIY devotees and print practitioners. Zines, a slangy truncation of “magazines,” are selfpublished pamphlets and booklets that wildly span both format and subject matter. Personal, professional, political, pulpy — anything goes here, with tiny stapled booklets nestling next to glossy bound tomes. The very notion of independent publishing, establishing alternative DIY networks to distribute resources, information and art, as well as platforming diverse voices, all takes on an added note of urgency in a time of creeping authoritarianism — both in Florida and the country at large. instagram.com/orlandozinefest
Best Selfie Jump-Scares: Atomic Horror
In an otherwise unremarkable edifice on a busy stretch of Colonial Drive lies the terrifying playground for the scare junkie that is Atomic Horror. Plentifully stocked with all manner of sticker, collectible, print, apparel and lifestyle item for the horror-film fiend, what gives this spot the final bloodcurdling flourish to make it a true must-stop is the spooky selfie-ready immersive environments sprinkled around the store. Yes, the selection of cured, dried, smoked and forced meats at Aniko is unparalleled. Best Unhinged Event Schedule: Oviedo Mall
Over the last year, we’ve done a complete 180 on malls, as Amazon has outstripped the capitalist excesses of these shopping shrines by leaps and bounds. Then came the Oviedo Mall, the relentlessly quirky shopping center that includes a functional B. Dalton (!), a black-box theater and an animethemed gift shop. It’s their year-round programming that really ups the ante, though: Goblin Market, Mall-O-Ween, book clubs, Mall Rat Market, mini-comic cons, 5Ks, teen photography classes and so much more. American Gothic
New Gen Theatrical is on a hot creative streak right now and there’s no sign of momentum lessening with new interactive experience American Gothic: The Harvest Ritual. This play drops attendees into the heart of a town in the throes of the Great Depression (with all the attendant drought and sickness) making viewers residents of the cursed municipality. But fret not, the Reverend has promised solutions, however esoteric, to the town’s problems. During the performance, guests interact with and assist the actors as everyday life begins to fall away and otherworldly ritual takes over. Theatergoers are encouraged to dress according to the time period, and two drinks — key to the show’s plot — are included with each ticket. To make the barren setting even more realistic, the show will be taking place inside the liminal Fashion Square Mall; now that’s a cursed locale if there ever was one. 8 p.m., Fashion Square Mall, 3201 E. Hard-touring hip-hop hitmaker Don Toliver clearly loves the road. Not only is he currently on an extensive U.S. tour dubbed Octane — which hits Orlando Friday — it is currently shifting into overdrive to become the Nitrous world tour. Continuing with this all-gas-no-brakes metaphor, Toliver is already itching to release new album Nitrous to follow up on his Billboard-topping album titled, yes, Octane. The Travis Scott-affiliated singer-rapper from Houston has been going all-in on his obsessions with fast cars and rally-racing (to, like, an Oasis soccer fandom level) for Octane and it’s already burning rubber on all the relevant streaming services. There’s a satisfying full-circleness to the tour which basically kicked off with Toliver’s set at Rolling Loud earlier this year, and
now here he is with the spotlight all to himself. Life truly is a highway. 7:30 p.m., Kia Center, 400 W. Church St., kiacenter.com, $100-$608. — Matthew Moyer FRIDAY-SUNDAY, AUG. 21-23
Megaplex
Furry fandom gathering Megaplex is here in Orlando for a weekend of hair-raising fun. This particular FurCon has been going strong since 2002, gathering more and more fans of anthropomorphic animals — both in popular culture and original creations — which in a state like Florida is no mean feat. (See: the con bumping up age limits to 18-plus in the wake of the just relitigated anti-drag law championed by DeSantis et. al.) Expect dance parties and competitions, vendors, games, a parade, live entertainment, photo ops, meet-ups for various species and the requisite “much more.” Hyatt Regency, 9801 International Drive, megaplexcon.org, $50$1,000. — MM SATURDAY, AUG. 22
World Plant Milk Day: Tasting and Cocktails
Celebrate World Plant Milk Day at Indie’s with unique cocktails, alternative milk tastings and a musical backdrop. World Plant Milk Day has been an actual thing since 2017, encouraging plant-based milk alternatives and highlighting health benefits, sustainability and cruelty-free processing. Try tastings from oat to cashew to almond (and even house-made banana milk) and plant-milk cocktails, all while listening to sounds from DJ Luce Sky. Singular Orlando artist Dawrby will be on hand to paint otherworldly and angular plant-head portraits, and a community plant swap invites guests to trade plants, even if only clipping for clipping. 6 p.m., Lil Indie’s, 1036 N. Tommy the Terrible Toupee Book Signing
For the kids at heart (with bleeding ulcers from reading the news) amongst us, here’s a book-signing event that might provide you with a moment of relief. Local scenesters Carol Benanti and Dave Mitchell are posting up at Will’s to sign copies of their new children’s book, Tommy the Terrible Toupee. It’s the heartwarming tale of a kindhearted toupee stuck on the head of a (very topical and) very mean man. After taking all he can, Tommy jumps off and goes in search of a better head to perch on. Mitchell, who has illustrated for Orlando Weekly now and again, pours on the charm, evoking both Pogo and vintage Dennis the Menace. Trashy trio 24 Hour Karate People play too, just to keep things unpredictable. 2 p.m., Will’s Pub, 1042 N. Mills Ave., willspub.org, free. — MM SATURDAY, AUG. 22
Science Night Live
Put the kids to bed. Now it’s time for the grownups to have the run of Orlando Science Center with Science Night Live. This evening of adult edutainment goes full Gen-X-tastic with a Laser X lightshow in the Dome with music from 1990s alt-rockstars like Smashing Pumpkins, Alice in Chains, Rage Against the Machine and also … Girls Against Boys? (Deep cut alert!) Emerge from the Dome feeling freshly skeptical and surly; head over to Mythbusting workshops with Central Florida Public Media journos Brendan Byrne, Molly Duerig and Joe Mario Pedersen; then guest speaker Natasha Tsakos will give a talk on PARABOLES, the upcoming multimedia performance taking place in microgravity. There will also be drinks, trivia and “Meet the Engineers” sessions. Come get some, slackers. 8 p.m., Orlando Science Center, 777 E. Princeton St., osc. org, $25. — MM

Punk for Public Media
Will’s Pub, Whatever Dude Productions and MOX!E unite with Central Florida Public Media for a second year with the Punk for Public Media benefit concert. The show features a multigenerational lineup of seven locals, including Partner,
S.M.O.P. and Debt Neglector, for an afternoon of loud music. On top of the sounds, Little Giant will post up on the Dirty Laundry back patio, serving up good eats until they sell out. Limited edition Punk for Public Media T-shirts can be had at the merch table, with a small number of last year’s design available as well. All proceeds go toward supporting Central Florida Public Media, our local
NPR affiliate station and its staff. The event started in the wake of cuts in state and federal funding for public media last year, which left Central Florida Public Media and outlets all around the country to fend for themselves financially. That hasn’t changed at all in the last 12 months, so it’s time to make some noise again. Noon, Will’s Pub, 1042 N. Mills Ave., willspub.org, $30.13. — MF

FILM
Drive Previously known for his menacing biographical crime drama Bronson and genre-defining Pusher trilogy, Danish provocateur Nicolas Winding Refn violently broke through to the American psyche in 2011 with the release of his singularly visionary film Drive. This sleek, neon-soaked, synth-scored masterpiece turned a satin scorpion jacket into a pop culture icon and reminded everyone that Ryan Gosling could say more with a single glance of his soulful eyes than most actors can with pages of dialogue. Drive became an instant phenomenon whose influence is still felt in film, fashion and soundtracks to this very day. Saturday 11 am; Enzian Theater, 1300 S. Orlando Ave., Maitland; $13; 407-629-1088; enzian.org. Wednesday Night Pitcher Show: Edge of Tomorrow Surprisingly good Tom Cruise vehicle directed by Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity, Go) and adapted from Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s acclaimed novel All
You Need Is Kill. Cruise is rightly lauded for his masterful stuntwork, but co-star Emily Blunt matches him beat for beat. With brilliant supporting turns from Bill Paxton and Brendan Gleeson and a whip-smart screenplay, Edge of Tomorrow found its audience on home video, developing a passionate following and becoming regarded as a modern sci-fi classic. The movie is free, but you can reserve a spot on the lawn, a bucket of beer, and popcorn at the Enzian site. Wednesday 8 pm; Enzian Theater, 1300 S. Orlando Ave., Maitland; free; 407-629-1088; enzian.org. Ghost World Few films capture the awkward uncertainty of growing up quite like Ghost World. Released in 2001 and directed by Terry Zwigoff (Crumb, Bad Santa), this sharp, bittersweet adaptation of Daniel Clowes’ acclaimed underground graphic novel blends biting satire with genuine empathy for the outsiders who struggle to find their place in an increasingly homogenized world. Fresh out of high school, sarcastic best friends Enid (Thora Birch) and Rebecca (Scarlett Johansson, who was just 15 at the time) drift through a summer of uncertainty, mocking suburban conformity while dreading the responsibilities of adulthood. Tuesday 9:30 pm; Enzian Theater, 1300 S. Orlando Ave., Maitland; $13; 407-629-1088; enzian.org.

Meet Petra! Petra (A599377) is a sweet 10-year-old stray that has been with us for over a month. It was clear she had been used for breeding, and then possibly dumped. She isn’t used to the noise and the chaos of the shelter; Petra is gentle, calm and extremely shy. She is a senior, so she will not require a lot of activity. She seems to prefer cuddling to running, and napping quietly by her person instead of long walks. Petra is patient and good with other dogs. Let’s get her home. Orange County Animal Services is located at 2769 Conroy Road in Orlando, near the Mall at Millenia. The shelter is open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. every day except Wednesday, when it’s open 2-6 p.m. For more information, please call 407-8363111 or visit ocnetpets.com.
