Few things go together as naturally as weed and video games. No, seriously. It’s like whoever invented the video game was probably high. OK — so we cannot confirm that physicist William Higinbotham developed a simple ping-pong-like game that wasn’t Pong (that came out 20-some years later) while under the influence of sweet, sweet cheeba, but we absolutely can attest to the fact that playing arcade games of any kind while high is one of the purest joys in life, especially at either of these metro Detroit arcade institutions.

Driving and consuming marijuana is not legal, folks. And yes, that goes for the discreet vapes and edibles, too.

n Indulge in some disc golf

Listen, some clichés are clichés for a reason.

Case in point, weed smokers and disc golf — and there’s nothing wrong with slipping on some Birks and hitting one or more of metro Detroit’s many disc golf courses.

New to being a proper stoner? Disc golf is a combination of frisbee and golf, but it’s usually in the woods, where no one can hear you toke.

Since Michigan legalized recreational marijuana for adult use in 2018, every day is 4/20, and for that we feel #blessed.

That’s right, folks. We’re stoners, we’re proud, and we’re ... bored? But not for long — take your high to new heights with some of these metro Detroit activities that will not only enhance your buzz but might put an end to those boredom blues.

Metro Detroit is home to some essential record shops for people of all budgets, backgrounds, and musical persuasions. You can blaze up and go crate digging, or save your stash for when you have some new vinyl to sway to, you beautiful dang hippie you.

When you look at his work it actually makes sense, which is why you might want to consider getting high before snagging a ticket for the Detroit Institute of Arts. Of course, we are asking you to be respectful when doing so, meaning no licking creamy and tempting marble statues, no screaming at contemporary art you don’t understand, no laughing at weird nude bodies, and absolutely no pretentious commentary of any kind — stoned or not, that shit is annoying. Just surround yourself with beautiful things, timeless works of art, and mind-blowing artifacts.

You won’t believe this, but weed and walking go really well together. No, like, so well that exercise — like walking or biking — releases endorphins, and cannabis tends to heighten what’s happening in the body.

So, why not conduct an experiment by getting high and strolling the Dequindre Cut Greenway? You know, for science.

Long a haven for graffiti writers and street artists, the two-mile greenway connecting the East Detroit Riverfront, Eastern Market, and some residential areas is a below-street level pedestrian paved path, primed for pot-smoking.

n Unleash your superhuman munchies

If weed were a food it would probably be pizza, because pizza, unlike most foods, is fucking perfect and literally no one can tell us otherwise. Actually, Detroit-style pizza is perfect, and if we weren’t on a super chill indica at the moment we might actually fight the haters. Instead of hating anything (well, except for olives or pineapple as toppings

because, just, no) we suggest trying a new pizza place in town.

No one will judge you. Well, maybe except for the red tigers… we hear they’re pretty catty.

n Find your next favorite sandwich

Don’t scoff. The humble sandwich is but a canvas for a stoner to express their truest, most hungry self. Mayo or Miracle Whip? Dill or bread and butter pickles?

Tomato? Lettuce? Mustard? The options are endless, which is also true of metro Detroit’s sandwich shop landscape. From classic Italian sammys to unique to Detroit Boogaloos and döner kebabs, any self-respecting stoner should have no problem

The company has since updated it for Halloween and the winter holidays, with new installations that help flesh out the installation’s characters and storylines.

OK — so this might be a two-hour drive from Detroit, but it offers a unique and stripped-down socially distanced experience that would likely get you arrested anywhere else. Turtle Lake Clothing Optional Resort in Union City is exactly what it sounds like.

Is there a better way to shed the shackles of conformity, societal judgment, and unpleasant chafing than by getting nude with strangers? Opened in the 1980s as a traditional camping resort experience, Turtle Lake ditched the clothing requirement sometime around 2003, when it transitioned into quite possibly Michigan’s best clothing-optional getaway. They have pools, hot tubs, a tiki bar, a range of outdoor sporting activities, as well as a private beach where skinny dipping is encouraged.

Located along Lake Superior, Copper Harbor offers nature trails and beautiful fall views of the lake and mountains.

While not everyone believes in ghosts, who some believe are spirits that have unfinished business on this plane of existence, stick a non-believer alone in Westland’s former Eloise Psychiatric Asylum with nothing but a flashlight and we bet they’ll change their tune... to a scream. The Fair Lane estate, which was where Henry Ford died, is allegedly haunted by a ghostly butler who has appeared inside of the vehicles on the grounds. The estate has been investigated by a Michigan paranormal team that said they recorded evidence of various strange sights like floating orbs and mist. Oh, and there have been reports of doors and windows opening and closing on their own. PASS!

n Northville Psychiatric Hospital 41000 Seven Mile Rd., Northville

Opened in 1952 and closed 50 years later, this hospital might just be home to some patients that have yet to leave. At the time, this Northville facility was touted as Michigan’s first attempt at scientific treatment of mental illness, and had everything from a movie theater, bowling alley, and therapeutic baths available to patients. However, the tunnels, which were

While the asylum is no longer standing, it is said to be surrounded by a creepy forest where many of the spirits have allegedly relocated to.

Once the largest psychiatric asylum in the country, and later, a favorite haunt for daring urban explorers, Westland’s hulking Eloise Psychiatric Hospital has been called “the Holy Grail” of paranormal investigation sites. Wayne County poorhouse in 1839, it soon housed people with mental and psychiatric disabilities, and at its peak, developed into a sprawling campus of 75 buildings that cared for as many as 8,000 patients a day.

Developers have since transformed it into an immersive experience for paranormal activity aficionados.

The largest Masonic Temple in the world is right here in our backyard. Opened in 1926, Detroit’s Masonic Temple spans 14 floors with 1,037 rooms. The massive building is also said to be home to many paranormal experiences. (Those who believe in this sort of thing say the temple is currently haunted

by George D. Mason, who went bankrupt because he helped to fund the construction of the temple. After that, his wife left him.

Mason killed himself by jumping off the top of the temple.)

n Elmwood Cemetery

n Detroit Institute of Arts

Elmwood Cemetery was first dedicated in 1846 and holds the title of being Michigan’s oldest operating cemetery. Some of Michigan’s most famous residents have been buried here, from governors to war heroes, and this cemetery also has the distinction of being the location of the Battle of Bloody Run. With so much history, surely paranormal activity could be part of it.

St. Agnes Church was originally built in 1921 and was abandoned in 2006. Some say a nun’s spirit can be felt inside, who was once part of the church’s congregation.

The gist of it is this: The former fire station’s chief Alonzo Miller died in 1940, and is believed to haunt the building. Immediately after his death, Miller’s crews reported hearing strange noises in the station, with reports extending into the 1970s.

“The Old Woman of Belle Isle?” We’re good!

Apparently, the bridge near Lake Tacoma is home to the legend of an old woman. Scared yet? OK, well legend says that if you drive your car, stop on the bridge, and turn the motor off, an old and decaying woman will appear before your eyes. She will then try and lead the passenger into the woods, which you should absolutely not do. Or should you?

This apartment building along the Cass Corridor was built in the late 1890s. In 1905, a woman named Rose Barron allegedly poisoned 40 families, killing two people with arsenic biscuits she made. It is said that the two victims still haunt the area, which is now part of Little Caesars Arena’s District Detroit renovation efforts. We have some bad bad news: you can’t evict ghosts.

The Phantom of the Opera doesn’t have shit on the Detroit Symphony Orchestra Building, which is said to be haunted by its former music director, Ossip Gabrilowitsch.

Though Michigan’s first and youngest governor, Stevens T. Mason, was originally buried in New York, his remains were relocated to Detroit in 1905 in a tomb beneath his statue. In 2010, Mason’s statue was refurbished and his grave was exhumed, but nothing was there. A couple days later, Mason’s tomb was discovered several feet away.

n Go ice climbing in Fenton

Whether you want to do an adventurous or a classic winter activity, Fenton and Genesee County have you covered. One day you could be ice skating, and the next … you could be ice climbing! It’s one reason Fenton is such a fantastic winter bucket list destination. No matter your level of experience, Peabody Ice Climbing offers a safe environment where you can climb 45-foot and 72-foot ice towers. At The Barn Hockey Ice Rink, you can spend some time ice skating on the hockey rink.

For more moderately difficult Nordic skiing, the Blueberry Ridge Pathway is a favorite in the U.P. It’s named after the jack pine forest blueberry patches that litter the area. In the winter, it’s home to more than 13.5 miles of groomed ski trails and seven trail loops.

n Go downhill skiing in Petoskey

If you’re a Michigan biking fan, the biking season doesn’t have to end when snow starts to fall. All you need is a fat tire bike to ride Nordic trails. The North Eastern State Trail follows the former Detroit and Mackinac Railway from Alpena to Cheboygan for 71 miles. The Chippewa Hills Pathway has 9 miles of trails that offer some of the most varied terrain for biking adventures.

Rockport State Recreation Area has about 8 miles of trails for fat tire biking. The Norway Ridge Pathway is a 7-mile trail that passes through sandy ridges and tall red pine trees.

The scenery is just beautiful as you ride.

While Michigan gets an average of about 64 inches of snow every year, Petoskey gets a whopping 111 inches! Because of that, it’s no surprise that the area has several ski resorts and lodges that facilitate downhill skiing and other winter recreation. If you’re a skiing enthusiast, add at least one of these Petoskey ski resorts to your winter itinerary. Offering accommodations and everything that you need for winter skiing, Boyne Highlands is a four-season resort just north of Petoskey in Harbor Springs. For a more intimate skiing experience, check out Nub’s Nob. This ski area and resort is exceptional at grooming the runs and offers private ski lessons.

Another large resort, Boyne Mountain is just south of Petoskey in Boyne Falls. The 60 runs offer plenty of thrilling opportunities for all skiers.

A lot of Michigan cities love to celebrate the snow and ice that cold weather brings with winter festivals. For more than 30 years, Zehnder’s has been hosting the Zehnder’s Snowfest, one of the most iconic ice and snow sculpting competitions in the nation.

Just outside of Detroit, the Plymouth Ice Festival is a world-class event that involves exploring more than 65 ice carvings in downtown Plymouth.

Winter Weekend In Downtown Petoskey is a celebration of the season with more than 30 ice sculptures. The Sault Ste Marie Downtown Winter Ice Festival is an exciting event where you get to watch as more than 50 award-winning sculptures are made using blowtorches, chainsaws, and chisels. The event usually includes a penguin parade too. Michigan Technological University in Houghton has hosted the Winter Carnival since 1922. This annual winter event, which celebrates 100 years this year, has become one of the biggest in the country.

n Explore the Eben Ice Caves

Michigan is full of unique destinations and the Eben Ice Caves, within the Rock River Canyon Wilderness of the Upper Peninsula, is one of them. The Eben Ice Caves are the result of water that seeps through the sandstone of the Rock River and Silver Creek canyons. The water freezes as it flows over the cliff edges, creating remarkable stalactites and ice curtains over the bedrock undercuts. Standing up to 50 feet high, the ice has a yellow hue against the nearby cedar trees and sandstone.

n Try an Olympic sport at the Kalamazoo Curling Club

In addition to hockey and ice skating, curling is a fun sport that can be played on any ice rink — indoor or outdoor. If you’re interested in learning more about this winter activity, put Kalamazoo on your Michigan winter bucket list. Since 2008, the Kalamazoo Curling Club has been providing a place for locals and visitors to participate in this Olympic sport. It was established by a group of people who simply like curling and wanted a place to do it with more people. The Kalamazoo Curling Club offers experiences for all skill levels, including rookies.

n Try an authentic banya at The Schvitz

Do you love saunas during the winter? We find it difficult to survive the cold winters without them, which is why The Schvitz Detroit is one of our top places to visit. It

has an authentic banya, which is a Russian steam bath that’s heated with a wood stove.

Established in 1930, The Schvitz was the original urban health club in Detroit and is the only historic bathhouse still remaining. As such, it’s more than a bathhouse: It’s a cultural institution and storied landmark that helps you unwind in an ancient environment. Over the years, it has continued to offer old-world holistic healing and heat therapies.

n Freeze for a cause with a Polar Plunge

Every year, the Law Enforcement Torch Run raises awareness and more than $1.2 million for Special Olympics Michigan athletes through a series of Polar Plunge events across the state. It’s the largest fundraiser for the organization.

n Fly down one of Michigan’s two luge tracks

If you love sledding but want more speed, you have to try lugeing. This type of tobogganing involves racing down an icy track on a small sled at up to 35 mph.

Professional lugers — like those you see in the Olympics — can reach speeds of up to 90 mph. You can only go lugeing on specifically made tracks. There are only four luge tracks in the United States, and Michigan is fortunate to have two of them: Muskegon Luge Adventure Sports Park and the Upper Peninsula Luge Club.

n Dash through the snow on a snowmobile trail

Did you know that winter is an exciting time for stargazers? Being so far north, Michiganders have the opportunity to see the Northern Lights. Clear nights during winter offer the best viewing experience, and the farther north you go, the better your experience will be. These include Isle Royale National Park in Lake Superior, Whitefish Point (a U.P. cape near the infamous SS Edmund Fitzgerald shipwreck), Wilderness State Park in Carp Lake, Port Crescent State Park in Port Austin, the Lake Hudson Recreation Area in Clayton, and Dr. Lawless International Dark Sky Park in Vandalia.

n Take a snowshoeing adventure

Snowshoes have been around for thousands of years and used by numerous cultures as a tool for traversing snowy terrain.

Now, snowshoeing is an enjoyable winter activity for people who love to be in nature.

Some of the best Michigan destinations for snowshoeing in Marquette, Alpena, Petoskey, Hanson Hills Recreation, Burton, and the Fort Custer Recreation Area in Augusta.

n Sled or tube down these Michigan hills

While dashing through the snow can be fun in a horse-drawn sleigh, it doesn’t compare to snowmobiling. Hundreds of miles of snowmobile trails cut through most of Michigan. Some of our favorite Michigan snowmobile trails are in Alger County, Sault Ste Marie, Alcona County, trails between Gaylord and Mackinaw City, the Fred Meijer White Pine Trail State Park, and the William Field Memorial Hart-Montague Trail State Park.

Did you know that sledding is an ancient form of transportation and has been a recreational activity for centuries? These activities have become classic ways to have fun with family and friends in the snow.

Some great places for snow tubing and sledding around the state include the John & Melissa Besse Sports Park in Gladstone, Timberlee Hills in Traverse City, Snow Snake Ski & Golf in Harrison, Hawk Island Park near downtown Lansing, and Echo Valley in Kalamazoo.

n Warm up with a unique & local coffee shop

n Experience the U.P. Pond Hockey Tournament

There’s nothing like grabbing a hot cup of coffee (or other hot beverage) to start a winter day or warm up after playing in the snow. Michigan has an abundance of coffee shops, but several of our favorite Michigan coffee shops are Moose Jackson Cafe in Iron Mountain; North Woods Coffee Guys

For the 15th year, the St. Ignace Visitors Bureau and Labatt Brewing Company are sponsoring the Labatt Blue U.P. Pond Hockey Championship in St. Ignace. It’s the largest pond hockey tournament in Michigan and one of the biggest in North America. Additionally, it’s one of only a few

events where a Great Lake serves as a pond.

About 200 teams have participated, some of them coming from as far away as Prague.

n Capture a snowy winter view

Have you seen breathtaking Michigan winter photos in your social media timeline?

Places in Michigan where you can capture similar (or better) views include Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park, Hogback Mountain in Marquette, the frozen waterfalls in the U.P., Upper and Lower Falls at Tahquamenon Falls State Park, Wagner Falls in Munising, and Miners Falls in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, and Ocqueoc Falls, the largest and only natural waterfall in the lower peninsula.

n Savor the flavor of a hot pasty Spread to Michigan’s U.P. by miners from Cornwall in the U.K., pasties have become a delicacy. They make delicious meals on their own, or you can get sweet varieties for dessert.

You don’t have to forgo eating and drinking outdoors with friends just because it’s cold outside. More and more igloos are popping up at restaurants, breweries, and wineries across Michigan. Add these igloo dining experiences to your winter bucket list: Bird’s Eye Outfitters in Sault Ste Marie, Hop Lot Brewing in Suttons Bay, Harvey’s Grill & Bar in Saginaw, Lumen in Detroit, Donkey Taqueria in Grand Rapids, and Dablon Vineyards in Baroda.
