UPFRONT NATIONAL PRESS COMES TO CLEVELAND, A FORETASTE OF THE RNC

THIS WEEK

THE STREETS OF CLEVELAND were abuzz, Thursday evening, with the click and chatter of political operatives and national reporters.

The first Republican National Debate was performed for a crowd of 5,000 at the Quicken Loans Arena, and hundreds flew to Cleveland to see Trump and the gang live.

“It really did feel like a mini National Convention,” TIME Political Reporter Zeke Miller told Scene. “I bumped into 4 or 5 reporters on my way from the Q back to the Marriott.”

Indeed, reporters were everywhere, scattered among the region’s trendiest bars after they’d filed their harried updates and debate takeaways. Miller, who was in town Tuesday evening through Friday morning, said he spent some time on E. 4th, and considered it “a bit more vibrant” than when he was last in town in 2012, covering Mitt Romney.

That’s a start. Destination Cleveland and the Greater Cleveland Partnership have long been assuring locals that an event like the RNC, with more media frenzy than even the Superbowl, will do wonders for the ongoing rehabilitation of Cleveland’s image.

Thousands of journalists will have no choice but to narrate the story of our revival, they say.

But it’s unclear if that will be so.

Thursday morning, MSNBC ran a segment entitled “Two Clevelands” which featured an out-of-work Slavic Village resident talking about the plight of the city’s poor.

Bloomberg ran a story by reporter (and former Clevelander) Michael C. Bender about the Health Line and Republican outreach in Cleveland’s predominantly black east side.

It’s not that these stories are explicitly negative. (Any press is good press, right?) It’s just that

expecting national reporters to function as part of the Destination Cleveland PR apparatus may not be realistic.

Although it might not be necessary. Clevelanders, already a fiercely tribal bunch, have staked out Twitter and will shower naysayers with horrifying invective.

BuzzFeed Trump correspondent Olivia Nuzzi, who made the mistake of Tweeting “I hated Cleveland,” was thus crucified, though the told Scene she found the encounter “hilarious.”

Who needs a tourism bureau, she ashed, when Cleveland has all these ambassadors on social media?

Miller said that TIME intends to send anywhere between 10-20 staffers, including some editors, for the convention next year. And that number may increase. They’re still in the early conversations about how they’ll tackle the convention, and Miller said that at this point most of

“They’re interested in scouting reports for next summer,” Miller said. “But the Cleveland Rebound is an interesting narrative, and the question will be whether or not it works for us. We’re certainly cognizant of it as a storyline.”

As for impressions of Cleveland today, Miller said he was struck by how much construction was going on around town.

“Whether it was the airport, the highways, [Public Square]... It was a little inconvenient in the short term,” he said. “The sign outside the Square said ‘ready by Summer of 2016,’ and I’m hoping that’s June and not July.”

Destination Cleveland’s David Gilbert added: “All of these opportunities can be leveraged to change the perception of what Cleveland offers.”

DUAL TRIALS TO TELL STORY OF 2012 POLICE SHOOTING Two trials -- a civil case in federal court and a criminal case in Cuyahoga County -- are about to begin, each one examining opposite perspectives on a 2012 police shooting in downtown Cleveland.

Officer Roger Jones, a black fiveyear veteran of the Cleveland police force, shot 20-year-old Kenny Smith in the early hours of March 10, 2012.

He faces a civil rights lawsuit in federal court that alleges his role in using excessive force and causing Smith’s wrongful death. Devonta Hill, 23, is charged in Cuyahoga County court with Smith’s murder.

Smith and Hill were at a party at Wilbert’s the night of the incident.

was a rising young rapper on the city’s east side. A number of fights broke out among the crowd, and an unknown person -- or multiple people -- fired a gun outside the bar.

“Kenny didn’t fight, Kenny didn’t lay a hand on nobody. Kenny wasn’t like that,” Smith’s friend, Martez Little, told Scene in late 2012.

Smith got into the front passenger seat of a gold Saturn driven by Devonta Hill. Another man rode in the back seat. Hill pulled out onto East 9th Street, though he was stopped at Prospect because of traffic and an unrelated incident.

Jones was either in the parking lot behind Wilbert’s or drinking at Tops and Bottoms Gentlemen’s Club -- his sworn deposition clashes with what he told a 9-1-1 dispatcher that night -- as the scuffle erupted out of the building and into a nearby alley.

When he heard gunshots, he took off onto the street and chased down Hill’s car.

“Rather than proceeding to the driver’s side where he supposedly saw the alleged shooter from the parking lot enter, Jones ran to the passenger side and kicked in Smith’s

window and ordered him from the car at gunpoint,” according to the civil complaint, a sequence of events later corroborated by Jones during a sworn deposition.

Smith was unarmed, but Jones saw a gun laying on the seat next to him. Jones pointed a semi-automatic handgun toward the left side of Smith’s head and fired one bullet.

The 20-year-old man took a few steps away from the car, collapsed and “lay gurgling for breath for many minutes before an ambulance was called,” according to the complaint.

As Jones was ordering Smith from the car, other police officers had arrived on the scene to arrest Hill -- the suspected gunman from the parking lot -- and later charge him for his role in the quickly escalating incident.

Now, more than three years later, the judicial stains of this night are coming to a head.

In 2014, ruling the shooting “justified,” Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Timothy McGinty hailed Jones for “correctly and heroically [taking] action to protect the citizens of safety of the citizens of Cleveland.”

Jones’ trial will begin Aug. 31.

Hill’s trial in Judge Joseph Russo’s courtroom was originally set for Aug. 12, 2013; he wasn’t indicted until Jan. 14, 2013 -- 10 months after the shooting. As of press time, the trial is now set for Sept. 8. He is charged with murder, involuntary manslaughter, aggravated riot, tampering with evidence, discharge of a firearm near prohibited premises, two counts of failure to comply and four counts of felonious assault.

“It’s totally insane, this case -- the way the system has treated it,” Terry Gilbert, an attorney for Smith’s family in the federal court case, tells Scene. “[That includes] McGinty by not prosecuting the cop and putting the blame on this driver, who was already out of the car and on the ground when the off-duty cop shot [Smith] at point-blank range in the head.”

FACETIME MOUTH GUARDS

Dentist Steven Katz is outfitting CMSD football players with customized mouth guards

By Sam Allard ON FRIDAY, DR. STEVEN KATZ, Dr. Tom Coreno and a team of volunteer dentists examined the mouths of football players from three Cleveland Public High Schools. They’re out to improve mouth safety on the football field and they’ve secured the funding to achieve their goals. Katz took a break from his jam-packed day cleaning cavities in Beachwood to chat with Scene about the program and to delineate the hierarchy of mouthguards for this bewildered correspondent. It’s unlikely that Dr. Katz’s local efforts will staunch the bleeding in dentists’ gaping PR wound caused by Dr. Walter Palmer, but thanks to this program, CMSD athletes have a new reason to smile.

So how’d the examinations go Friday?

It was great. They brought the kids to Case on Friday and we made impressions of their teeth, gave them hygiene instructions, talked to them about nutrition, screened them for cavities, anomalies, referred them to dentists if necessary, and then sent them on their way.

Sounds like one hell of an interactive field trip.

Well yeah, exactly, except they were just lying there. We were the ones doing the interacting. They were great and appreciative, and everyone was just really happy to be there.

You did the football players from three schools, correct?

Correct. We started with John Hay, John F. Kennedy and Rhodes High School, and between them we did somewhere between 100-110 impressions for mouthguards. This is a three-year program. So over the next two years we’re going to do the additional six schools in the district. We’re going to make sure we get all of them.

What’s the benefit of a customized mouthguard as opposed to something you’d just pick up at Dick’s?

There are several benefits, but if you think about it, when you buy something at Dick’s, the plastic mouthguard that goes into anybody’s mouth, it doesn’t fit. How could it possibly? It’s just a piece of

It’s a huge concern. And understand that the Ohio High School Athletic Association requires that athletes wear a mouthguard, but it doesn’t make a requirement for the specific kind of mouthguard. Sometimes you’ll see players come off the field and hand their mouthguard to another player.

No. How gross is that? Not only does it not protect his teeth, but the hygiene is horrible. Think of that.

boys need mouthguards. And he said we can do it, we just need to get the funding and put everything together. You know it sounds so cliche, but it’s really just about giving back. When you see these kids, and they’re smiling and so appreciative, you realize: This is a really great thing.

I gotta figure CMSD is grateful as well.

It was something to the effect of: You mean you guys are willing to put $250 mouthguards on our athletes at no cost to them? Tell us when to be there and we’ll make sure it happens.

Are they honestly that expensive?

If you went to your dentist and had one made, it could cost anywhere from $250-$400.

Holy smokes.

And some dentists, like my friend, he’ll basically just charge his costs, probably $70, but he’s just doing it as a service. Ordinarily, it’s gonna cost you at least a few hundred dollars.

The next type of mouthguard is called a boil and bite.

A Boylan Bite?

You throw it in hot water and it melts the plastic and then you put it in your mouth and bite on it and it molds to your teeth.

Aha--boil and bite.

It’s way better than that first one, but what happens over time is that it stretches and modifies. It gets lumpy in places and thin in other places. There’s no way to make it consistent.

And what’s your version?

What we do is we make an impression of the athlete’s teeth and then pour up a model out of stone. Then the lab technician makes a custom mouthguard that fits this athlete specifically. It’s like a fingerprint. Nobody’s teeth are the same.

You hear a lot about concussions in football, but not so much about mouth injuries. Is it

mouthguard, because the teeth are protected so well, the likelihood of injury is way less. And it’s not just teeth. It’s all the oral structures: the jaw, the gum tissue and even the tongue.

And are these puppies free for the students?

It’s completely free for the students. We had 15 volunteer dentists and 15 volunteer dental students. We received grants from the American Dental Association Foundation and the Greater Cleveland Society Foundation, and some supplies from a few other organizations.

Why did this strike you as an important project to pursue?

My friend Dr. Tom Coreno is the team dentist for the Chagrin Falls’ athletic teams. He did a program similar to this almost 15 years ago. They provided mouthguards to the Glenville football team. He explained to me the need, and I said why can’t we do this on a bigger scale? Glenville was the big school back then. Ginn was there and they had all the notoriety, so it was exciting to do Glenville, but there are eight other schools where the

Aside from the mouthguards, how’s the dental health of the students you examined?

On the forms, we asked when was the last time they’d been to the dentist, and a lot of the kids we examined didn’t know. It had been that long. So for whatever reason, it’s not a priority. And it was interesting. The coaches were almost more interested and concerned about that than they were about the mouthguards. And I can completely sympathize: What do you mean you haven’t been to the dentist in six years? But the overall impression was that we didn’t see a lot of really bad mouths. Maybe it’s because nowadays these kids have fluoride and the teeth are a lot stronger, but we didn’t see a ton of cavities and missing teeth and things like that.

That’s a relief. And soon they’ll have some really deluxe mouthguards.

Yeah, we’re delivering them in two weeks, taking them to the individual athletes at the schools.

The mouthguards are going to be in their school colors. It’s going to be a really exciting thing.

In late July 2014, the two staging techs and a small staff were tasked with setting up the seven stages and assorted infrastructure of Machine Gun Kelly’s EST Fest, a sprawling weekend of rap and electronic music in the woods of Nelson Ledges Quarry Park in Northeast Ohio. To borrow a phrase from an entirely earnest WQHT Hot 97 DJ a few months after the fact, the event was like a “’hood Epcot.”

For Russell and Walters, the event was work — and the promise of good pay on the back end. They were to take home $1,800 for the job, a healthy paycheck to pair with the trickle of income they earned at a tire shop near their home in Canton. The nine days on-site would carry them into August, so rent would be due. And, to quicken the dread later on, they’d need to repair their truck after the beating it was going to take along the quarry’s rough terrain. Times are always tough in the gig economy, and Russell and Walters were eager for their checks.

The couple stitches together a living like so.

As early as two days into the job, the rumor mill was grinding out hearsay that maybe no one was going to get paid for this one. Like that old “telephone” game, conversations were treading through camp that something was up with the money.

According to the lore of the weekend, an additional crew of six from LiveNation didn’t bother to come back after hearing that.

One thing that should be known is that these sorts of independent music events come with their own brand of hand-wringing and doubt.

Things fall apart, and sometimes the money comes in late. Or sometimes somebody needs to borrow on credit to make payments happen. Whatever.

The money always comes in. Usually.

For the most part.

Russell, characterizing herself as an optimist even in dire straits, wasn’t buying into the talk. Still, something didn’t quite feel right about the situation. This wasn’t like most events she worked — and it certainly wasn’t like the Pro Football Hall of Fame inductionceremonies,whichtookplace the same weekend of EST Fest and which the couple declined in favor of the MGK event.

The way she explains it now, she and her better half aren’t normally asked to, like, live on the grounds before, during and after the show — for nine days. As she and Walters trucked deep into the woods to

assemble one of the stages — a massive geodesic dome that would house late-night DJ sets — they tried to dust off those bad thoughts and get on with the work.

After all, in a few days some 6,000 to 10,000 fans (estimates vary wildly to this day) would arrive for fun and debauchery. When they did show up, Russell and Walters were asked — told — to take up security detail.

Despite the anxiety of set-up, and according to observations of those in attendance, the event was a success. Machine Gun Kelly is, in certain circles, a hometown hero. Fans spent the weekend doggedly pursuing him, chanting “E-S-T-What-The-Fuck!” (EST, the licensed tagline and battle cry of MGK’s career, stands for “Everyone Stands Together.”

Victoria (she has requested her last name not be used for this story), the crew steward of eight staging techs — including Russell and Walters — and a lighting tech and lighting designer, buzzed in for two days to ensure that everything was going well. It was. And Justin Simpson, the stage manager for Nelson Ledges at the time, assured her and the crew that the money was coming. Invoices were collected and approved.

During the actual festival, Russell and Walters were stationed out in the woods, trading 24/7 shifts to monitor the dome and make sure that no one was going inside and screwing around with the equipment. The work was becoming something more than what they had agreed to, leaving them hungry and tired and ready to be done with the whole thing.

“It got to the point where it was like, is this even worth it? I feel it wasn’t,” Russell says. “I feel we got fucked, excuse my French.”

Payment was due Aug. 3, 2014, the last day of the job, and the day that Russell and Walters were asked by a Garrettsville neighbor to help clean up the Nelson Ledges grounds and surrounding property. The place was a mess, totally trashed.

They declined, seeking instead the comforts of home; but, looking back, Russell says that at least that guy might have paid them for a day’s honest work.

between the two of them. The other staging and lighting techs took the total to $6,325. Add the event’s lighting designer and assorted other costs, and you’re at $9,170 without interest.

That’s just a small portion of the total costs of the 2014 EST Festival.

Estimates hover in the low six figures.

When it came time for payment, no one — the techs, the electrical team, the equipment providers, the venue — got paid. The rumor mill had been correct.

The story that the crew steward, Victoria, first heard was that the ticketing agency was disputing the funds, asserting that perhaps the 6,000 or so attendees hadn’t even been there. A 45-minute rain delay took place during a thunderstorm on Saturday. The main pit was fairly well flooded, but the sun dried everything out pretty quickly. It remains unclear how many people, if any, requested a refund; based on video of the entire weekend and interviews with people involved in the staging, the show continued after the storm without further interruption.

“When there’s a rain delay on an outdoor festival for 45 minutes, it is not refund city,” Victoria says. “It’s

a rain or shine event.

Everybody’s there. The show went on.”

During the festival and in the ensuing days and weeks, Simpson, the stage manager, was handling payments for the workers.

He’s familiar with the fact that smaller and mid-sized festivals come with their fair share of unexpected surprises. Equipment might not show up as promised, or a staging crew might come in with different expectations or the money might not be as bountiful as initially thought, and his job included navigating those obstacles. But, listen, things like this tend to get worked out. He assured everyone that the money would be coming.

Despite the claims that a rain delay investigation was causing the hiccup, Victoria says she and her team were never told what ticketing agency was involved with the festival.

They weren’t told with any sense of certainty when the investigation would be cleared up. They weren’t told where the money was physically located. Even as late as mid-May 2015, when Scene first began speaking with EST Fest staff, none of the workers knew the name of the ticketing agency. It was as though a ghost had fled in the night with the cash.

A few weeks after the event, Victoria and the other workers were told to forward their invoices to a group called Livin’ Legends LLC.

Recalling the curveball, Victoria says now: “What do you mean I have to suddenly make an invoice to Livin’ Legends? This is a new name. I’ve never heard this. That was never part of the agreement.”

But even through this avenue, the money was still unavailable. By that point, Livin’ Legends, the promotions team behind MGK’s touring successes, was embroiled in a lawsuit over this fiasco.

On Aug. 20, 2014, Nelson Ledges Quarry Park filed a civil complaint against Livin’ Legends LLC, citing breach of contract and accounting discrepancies. “[Livin Legends] has breached the contract by not paying the full rental fee and associated staffing and clean-up fees to the Park. Such fees were due before and immediately after the festival,” according to the suit. The park’s rental fee was a baseline $25,000, with incremental increases in line with attendance. A cleaning and maintenance charge was “not to exceed $4,000.”

As the lawsuit unfolded, Victoria’s confusion only compounded in trying to get her due payment. “I was like, ‘What do you mean?’ There are only two responsible parties and both are disagreeing,” Victoria says, referencing the venue and the event organizer. The confusion didn’t let up anytime soon.

Not much is known about Livin’ Legends. “Check us out @ www.livinlegendsllc.com,” the group’s Facebook page urges. But livinlegendsllc.com brings up nothing but a blank page. While confirmed as being active last summer, est-fest. com now similarly directs the user to a page where he or she may claim the domain name.

The company originally filed in the state of Ohio in 2007. The incorporates are listed on public records as: Donald P. Hill, Andre Cisco II and Brandon Young.

The group declined to speak on the record with Scene, though Cisco II spoke briefly over the phone and said: “We’ve done festivals, and we’ve done so many shows in Cleveland. Everything has run smoothly. We’ve never had any issues like this. It’s just unfortunate what happened.”

For Russell and Walters and everyone else, it still isn’t really clear what happened.

Livin’ Legends declined additional interviews, insisting instead on providing a written statement to

Follow-up questions were ignored

by MGK’s publicity team, and the staging crew remains clueless as to how MGK and his team will “make things right.” At least one worker points out to Scene how most popularly accepted estimates of MGK’s personal wealth hover at “$1.2 million.”

Settlements were proposed; at one point Victoria was willing to square her crew’s payment at $7,000 total, but the imposed May 20, 2015, deadline ran out on that offer.

“It’s not fair for nobody involved in this production where not a dollar was given to anybody,” Russell says. “[Management] swore up and down that we were to be paid the day the festival ended. It’s now months later, and not one person has seen a dime from it to my knowledge.”

And she’s nearly correct. Some workers speculate that some of the festival’s 18 or so bands and artists were paid, though Scene could not confirm that. And Will Roth, who provided sound equipment for one stage on Saturday during EST Fest, received the $1,600 he was owed.

“We took the sound system out early in the morning, set it up with the band on the beach, and we were probably done by 1 o’clock,” Roth says. “As we were going out, they needed some spotlights for the main stage, so we also brought those out.”

His role was fairly nominal, but, like everything else, the weekend’s sound equipment costs racked up.

Over the course of four or five months, he says, he remained adamant and eventually got his check settled through Livin’ Legends.

As Russell describes it, though, over the following weeks she began losing contact with the festival and venue’s management. Emails went unrepliedto, voicemails went unanswered, and the dread, held briefly at bay, began to sink in.

“People forget that we’re bringing a lot of money to Ohio,” MGK said during a May 2015 interview with Hot 97 in New York City. “They speak on LeBron, they speak on a lot of things,

but we bring a lot of money to Ohio.”

During that portion of the interview, MGK says that last year’s EST Fest garnered about 10,000 attendees. Festival organizers and workers, however, said that attendance was just shy of 6,000. It’s not really clear what the real number is.

When you drive up to Nelson Ledges Quarry Park for a festival weekend, you pull in through a mostly bare-bones entrance. Those who have tickets pre-purchased and in-hand are sent through. Others hand over cash before being whisked into the event.

Tickets began at $50, before rising along tiers ($75, $100) as the event got closer. Even the most conservative math balances out to hundreds of thousands of dollars in ticket sales, to say nothing of the proceeds of whatever merch lined the stands that weekend. At $50 a ticket, 6,000 attendees would translate to $300,000.

As Roth put it, “Everybody should have gotten paid; a lot of money came in.” Considering the venue and the workers and the artists, some backof-the-envelope arithmetic would still leave plenty of money in profit.

The fallout from EST Fest raises questions that invariably point observers back to a 2012 bar brawl in Pinellas County, Florida — as another legal flashpoint in MGK’s career and something of a foreshadowing event several years in the making.

“Just spent my entire night in a fucking Florida jail... shit escalated way too quick last night, it always does with us though,” MGK tweeted following the 2012 concert in St. Petersburg, during which, according to police reports, he sliced open a security guard’s hand mid-brawl and landed in prison for the night.

The security guard, William Long, ended up in a hospital for eight days, enduring two days of surgery and “intense therapy.”

Eight months after the fight, as the case made its way to federal court, Long was asking for $15,000.

MGK denied the argument for that money. More than two years later, in November 2014, the parties filed a notice with the court that a settlement had been reached.

On Nov. 20, 2014, Long filed a

motion with the court, alleging that MGK and his legal team had “falsely, fraudulently, wilfully (sic), and in bad faith” induced him to proceed with a settlement that he “had no intention of honoring in good faith.”

Three years after the brawl, it seems that a final settlement was eventually reached. And from this vantage point, it’s difficult to separate that Florida court docket from the handling of the Nelson Ledges lawsuit, in which Portage County judge Laurie Pittman has ordered MGK’s team to pay $95,034.13 — and ordered so twice.

But the thing that ties the whole story together isn’t Livin’ Legends’ questionable record of media relations or legal battles. This whole time, see, the guys at Livin’ Legends and everyone in MGK’s camp have just been trying to find the money in the first place. They were fumbling through a bad situation with an apparent ghost who had fled in the night with the cash. More than one year out now, they still don’t know where all that money is.

A guy named Leonard Jordan knows.

At the heart of the mystery for the past year has always been the unidentified ticketing agency.

After Scene located a screenshot of a pair of 2014 EST Fest tickets, a quick series of Google searches brought up a company named Here Your Tickets LLC, a Steubenvillebased ticketing operation that originally filed for incorporation in Ohio on Sept. 6, 2013.

The sole registered agent is a man named Leonard Jordan, who is also named as the registered agent for the following Ohio entities: Cloud 9Nine LLC, Firecards Print Media Group LLC, The Shirt Off Our Backs Foundation. None of those entities has an online presence outside of state records.

But hereyourtickets.com is a functioning website that, based on web archives images, once advertised the 2014 EST Fest.

In 2004, Jordan stole Charter One Bank checks from a woman named Candice Fitzgerald and “cashed several of the checks at various banks,” according to Parma police.

Cuyahoga County judge Daniel Gaul gave him five years of probation, which he later terminated after two years.

Prior to that, though, Jordan’s local schemes ran the gamut from cocaine possession and trafficking in 1989, stolen vehicle possession in 1991 (an ’86 Pontiac), crack cocaine possession and trafficking in 1995, passing bad checks and theft in 1996 and sexual battery in 2010.

unsurprisingly in this saga, was not located by Scene for comment for this story. He’s suspected to be encamped near his Steubenville homebase.)

According to the grapevine that twists around the Northeast Ohio events staging scene, MGK’s people are working out a contract with Nelson Ledges to host “several” future EST Fests or events of similar ilk there. The tickets and the money would be handled internally through Nelson Ledges. No one officially involved with either party could confirm that plan.

But the hope is that money would be recouped and this fiasco can be

put to bed. The track record for hope in this story isn’t great, though.

Victoria continues to advocate for her crew.

In an email from Livin’ Legends LLC to Victoria on June 29, 2015, before the Cuyahoga County judgment against Jordan, Don Hill wrote: “We do not have a definite answer as to when there will be a court ordered judgement but the way it looks, it’ll be in our favor. Next thing is to try to recoup monies owed to us. This may be a difficult task but we are continuously working towards the path of

assuring you along with others are paid.

“In the mean time we are trying to host small events that’ll possibly bring in some revenue. I pray and hope sometime in August we can provide you with some type of monetary dollar value to square up with everyone and get this behind us.”

As of press time, Victoria and her crew have not received any type of monetary dollar value.

Livin’ Legends wouldn’t explain to Scene why they chose to do business with Jordan and his fledgling ticketing op. But after scooping egg off the company’s face, they tracked him down and, according to Cuyahoga County documents, served a court notice to him on May 26.

Jordan didn’t respond to the notice. But the court took action.

According to records, Jordan owed $302,905, the sum of the ticket revenue that went through his company.

The straightforward and nearly immediate default judgment awarded a sum of $908,715 to Livin’ Legends on July 24. Whether Jordan is located again and whether he pays up remains to be seen.

Whether the trickle-down of payment makes its way to Russell and Walters and everyone else who labored to build EST Fest from scratch is anyone’s guess. (Jordan,

One Helluva Team In 1920, the Cleveland Indians were the best team in baseball. A collection of short stories, Le’s triumph takes readers to the slums of New York, Colombia and Australia as it explores the unique struggles of citizens in each region. Tethered to the universal need for racial equality, The Boat digs under the skin of humanity to bring up true emotion and grit. The Vietnam-born writer received the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award in 2009.

The Weight of the Matter A Norwegian scientist takes a trip to Paris for a seminar on the actual weight of a kilo, but instead she ends up measuring the grief, loneliness and disappointment in her own life.

Director Bent Hamer, best known for his work on Kitchen Stories, gives us 1001 Grams, the story of a scientist who’s finally awakened by her own emotions and discovers far more about herself than her intended area of study.

This charming yet melancholy film highlights the similarities between the scientist’s fragile and precise job (a designated keeper of the national

kilogram prototype) and her fragile life and emotions. Ane Dahl Torp, who plays the lead role of the scientist, gives a noteworthy performance. The Cleveland Connection In 2014, the Sandusky Cultural Center presented Oberlin Connection, an effort by curator Charles Mayer to build a connection between the

Paper Products In addition to his work in the Oberlin Connection show at Doubting Thomas in Tremont Friday evening, Cleveland artist Matthew Gallagher will debut 40 new works on paper at Canopy Collective’s 1090 Club. These new works explore solvent fluid dynamics and magnetic fields in Gallagher’s experimental and evolving creative process. Gallagher’s work is created similarly to the scientific method.

He creates specific formulas and variables and processes them with an incorporated element of chance. The results are never the same twice, and as a viewer, you never know what to expect. A Rich Man A comedian who uses interactive hypnotism as the main focus of his show, Rich Guzzi just appeared on Access Hollywood and in Parade Magazine. He also stars in a 300-show national comedy tour to prep for a onehour special. He decided to make the switch to hypnotism from traditional standup comedy, which he did for

most of his career, because it was more unique and memorable. His show is based on motivating and inspiring the audience by bringing up volunteers to the stage and hypnotizing them.

A Free Jazz Icon Ornette: Made in America chronicles the career of Ornette Coleman, a famous jazz saxophonist from Fort Worth, Texas. Coleman found success and acclaim in the 1960s for his unique approach to jazz, which was to strip down the rigid chord progressions and song structures from the bebop genre. However, his newfound style led some musicians to believe that Coleman was playing out of tune due to his loud, raw sound, which not many were used to at the time. The film follows his decadespanning career with music videos, performance footage, reenactments, and interviews with the likes of Robert Palmer, William Burroughs and Yoko Ono. Although it focuses mainly on his musical career, the film overflows with American history as Coleman grew up in segregated Texas and subsequently became a cultural pioneer. Dream Weaver Northeast Ohio-based filmmaker, Richard Myers will present and talk through three of his movies that were recently restored by the Archive of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Hollywood. His style of filmmaking is rather experimental and he is known for his use of loose narratives or non-narratives, in which his ideas for the films first come from his dreams. The first film that will be shown is The Path, which follows the outing of a group of people through old buildings, although the main focus of the film is on objects and scenery rather than the characters themselves.

The next film, Akbar, follows one of Myers’ students from Kent State, an African American filmmaker named Ahmed Akbar. The Vinyl Answer While sales of CDs continue to decline, vinyl has seen a resurgence. In fact, the recent Jack White album became the fastest-selling vinyl album since Nielsen Soundscan began compiling vinyl sales figures in 1991. Jukebox owner Alex Budin has described his 1,350-square-foot music-focused bar in the Hingetown ’hood as “a place where people can expect to hear and learn about music of multiple genres, all of which is concentrated in a constantly evolving jukebox.” In keeping with that spirit and recognizing the burgeoning popularity of vinyl, the club hosts a vinyl night every Tuesday that serves as a listening party for new releases. The place has partnered with Loop in Tremont so that patrons can hear a new album on vinyl. You can bring your own vinyl and spin it too.

Lauren Davies takes over former William Busta Gallery space downtown

By Josh Usmani LAST WEEK, LAUREN DAVIES received the keys to the gallery formerly known as William Busta Gallery. Now known simply as 2731 Prospect (its address), the gallery will officially open its doors with a grand opening reception on Friday, Sept.

18, from 6 to 9 p.m. Taking time away from her preparations, Davies recently introduce herself to the readers of Scene, and offered insight into what the future holds for 2731 Prospect.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and what you were up to before Bill Busta announced you would be taking over his gallery?

I moved to Cleveland about two and a half years ago after spending my entire adult life in San Francisco. I went to the San Francisco Art Institute and received my MFA in sculpture.

I’ve maintained a studio practice over the long haul and have continued to show my work in a variety of nonprofit and institutional venues in California plus some gallery shows and artist residencies.

The summary of that 12-year experience is that I really enjoyed working with a variety of artists in peer-relationship situations. Together we strategized on their residency studio projects, gallery exhibitions and artists’ talks. It was a great opportunity to understand their artistic and personal background, their thinking and their studio practice. It was a major learning experience that has fostered some important personal and professional relationships.

When did you begin talking to Bill Busta about taking over his space?

How did the whole thing manifest itself?

I heard about Bill closing the gallery while I was working with some other artists installing our photo show at FORUM Artspace back in January.

The Steve Litt (Plain Dealer/Cleveland. com) story had just appeared the day before. We were discussing it as a group of artists. What did this closure mean? Surely, the loss of a major opportunity for artists in the region.

Depressing news.

It struck me that the Cleveland institutions are completely top notch.

Cleveland Museum of Art, MOCA, Transformer Station, SPACES are all doing great work. But where do people who live here actually show their work? There’s a number of people making an effort, running small galleries, pop-ups, storefront spaces.

But that next professional level — Bill Busta’s — that was closing. To me, the lack of viable opportunities for artists loses artists to other locations. Does Cleveland, the arts community and its supporters not care? It was really tragic if nobody stepped up.

I mentioned this to my brother, who is an entrepreneur. He agreed that it was unfortunate. A week later, he said, ‘Let’s call Bill. Maybe we should try to save this gallery.’

That’s my brother; he called Bill two minutes later to set up a meeting. He felt between his business experience and my art world experience, maybe we could give it a try and see if we could make a difference in the arts community. He called Bill, we went down to the gallery a few days later for the first meeting and our discussions and plans have gone smoothly since Day 1.

Robert Bostwick, the architect and property landlord, seems delighted that the gallery will continue. Bill Busta and his wife Joan Tomkins have been wonderful to work with as this transition took place.

A very touching moment was at Bill’s closing party at the gallery. He had a tiny copper plate made with my

Michelangelo Lovelace’s show is titled Good People with Bad Habits. He recently received the Cleveland Art Prize and is included in the current show at MOCA, How to Remain Human.

The New York collaborative team of Mengay and Slovenc will be presenting an architectural photodocumentary project they shot in Cleveland that focuses on industrial decline and its economic ramifications in a show titled Brick and Bones.

On Saturday, Oct. 10, at 2 p.m. there will be a panel discussion with the three artists moderated by an architect/urban planner. Although these are two independent exhibitions, both projects comment on various aspects of life in Cleveland. The event is free and open to the public.

Just to mention a few upcoming 2016 exhibitions, the gallery will be showing the winners of an international photography competition juried by Laura Bidwell and others in the spring of 2016. Also, look for a really exciting solo show by internationally known print artist, Endi Poskovic, who lives and teaches in Ann Arbor.

The gallery is kind of on an island; it isn’t in one of Cleveland’s rebranded neighborhoods like Waterloo or Hingetown. Do you plan to partner with any other artists, organizations or institutions to connect with other parts of the community?

Can you tell us about the first show in September?

The first show will feature new work by Cleveland’s Michelangelo Lovelace in one gallery and in the other gallery there will be a collaborative photographic project by Donald Mengay and Hrovje Slovenc who are from New York.

Not being a born and bred Clevelander, many people have pointed out to me that the key attribute of the gallery’s location is that there is ample parking and it’s an easy mid-point stopover between the west side and the east side. I hope to continue Bill’s vibe by maintaining the gallery as a friendly, go-to location. I want people to feel welcome to visit, hang out and discover something new. Just park out front and drop in!

In terms of partnering, let me say that coming from a nonprofit

background, partnering, alliances, sharing and fostering mutually beneficial opportunities are key issues. Each exhibition will be accompanied by at least one public event that hopefully draws gallery visitors from a community that might not have visited our gallery before. We really want to expand our audience with public events and engagement with the artists.

The artists want dialog with the community and hope to deliver that at 2731 Prospect.

Additionally, I’m involved with other Cleveland arts institutions and organizations by my participation on a variety of committees, programming groups, fundraisers, portfolio reviews, exhibition jurying, etc.

Will you be exhibiting your own work in the gallery or anywhere else around town?

Definitely not at 2731 Prospect. I will continue to look for exhibition opportunities and grants like every other artist.

I am happy to say that I will be presenting new work in a group exhibition at SPACES titled The Peoples’ Museum of Revisionists Natural Itstory. This is a collaborative project with a team of artists from around the country collectively exploring natural history museum presentations. The show opens in November.

STAGE MARY POPPINS PLAYS HER TRUMP CARD AND WINS Even a day after the Republican debate, the musical Mary Poppins can make you believe in happy endings

By Christine Howey ONE DAY AFTER THE FIRST Republican presidential candidate debate here in Cleveland last Thursday, this reviewer headed off to see the light and airy musical Mary Poppins at the Mercury Theatre Company. And try as I might, my impressions of this show — with music and lyrics by Richard M. and Robert B. Sherman and a book by Julian Fellowes — were substantially affected by the backwash from the Fox News broadcast. So this review will reflect those two theatrical events, drawing connections that are clearly inevitable.

As you may know, this stage version of the Poppins’ saga is a mashup of the book series by P.L. Travers and the 1964 Disney film, celebrating the magical nanny who employs her mystical powers to save the Banks’ nuclear family. Her mission seems similar to the promises of the 17 presidential aspirants on stage at the two debates last week, each promising a world that, in Ms. Poppins’ terminology, would be “practically perfect in every way” if only they could occupy the Oval Office.

The beloved Mary P., played and sung with vigor by Jennifer Myor,

that Mr. Banks’ personality problems stem from his time under the control of Miss Andrew, the nanny-from-hell that brought him up as a child using vile spoonfuls of “Brimstone and Treacle.”

As Miss Andrews, marvelous Hester Lewellen swallows the scenery in huge gulps as she hisses and sneers through that song and all her other offensive activities. Compare that to Rand Paul, the curly-haired candidate who tried to pick fights with both Trump and Gov. Chris Christie and was ultimately shoved aside, as is Miss Andrew, after a large dose of her own medicine.

Sure, there are other PoppinsRepublican comparisons, such as matching Bert the chimney sweep

Jonathan Bova is often more messy than natty, and he doesn’t quite capture the ramrod inflexibility of his character. He was sort of like Jeb Bush, who continually struggled to exhibit presidential gravitas while standing next to the whirling blonde tonsorial explosion that is The Donald.

Eventually in the play, we learn

with Gov. John Kasich, who tried to scour the grime off the Republican brand by stating a desire to take care of people who are less fortunate.

Indeed, Kasich seemed in tune with the bottom line message of Mary Poppins, that people are more important than profits. This may be why Kasich’s candidacy is probably doomed, since

instantly gets the two rambunctious Banks kids to warm up to her by pulling a hat rack, a large plant, and other unlikely bric-a-brac from her rather small valise. As little Michael Banks (Niko Ustin) notes, “We’d better keep an eye on her.” In this respect, Donald Trump was very Poppins-ish at the debate as he continually pulled huge promises out of the clear blue without any idea how those things could happen in the real world.

Mr. George Banks, the pater familias of the Banks household, is a proper and demanding sort who doesn’t know how to relate to his family, until he faces a crisis at the bank where he works. In this role,

Republican primary voters are dominated by those who divide the world into “makers” and “takers.”

Setting the debates aside (reluctantly), this production by the Mercury Theatre Company, under the direction of Pierre-Jacques Brault, displays all the strengths of this theater company. The leads have excellent singing voices and Brault is adept at fashioning some breathtaking tableaux, especially in big, bodacious production numbers such as “Step in Time.”

And the choreography by Melissa Bonde makes good use of the large cast while hiding some individual weaknesses as dancers.

Brault always tries some interesting staging techniques, and some of them work in this show, such as the large wheeled stairway that transports Mary up an aisle at the end of the show. But others, such as some kites and an umbrella sliding down on cables over the audience, were less than stunning. But give Mercury a gold star for trying things that fit into a budget that certainly is not as capacious as Poppins’ bottomless carry-on.

As for the rest of the cast, Brian Marshall poses handsomely as Bert, singing and dancing effectively as always. But one wishes that Marshall would take more chances and add some rash, improv spirit to this role, as he has in other productions.

When unleashed, Marshall can be hilarious and riveting. Kayleigh Collins handles her duties as Jane Banks well, as does Dana Aber in the rather colorless role of Mrs. Banks (it’s a much feistier role in the movie).

And Natalie Golz and Noah SpiegelBlum add some laughs as the Banks’ servants.

This is the final show of the Mercury season, and this company of mostly young performers remains a treasure for those who love musical theater. And no matter what you say, Donald, there is no debate about that.

Biopic The End of the Tour offers insights into fame and ambition

By Sam Allard JASON SEGEL PORTRAYS literary giant David Foster Wallace in The End of the Tour, a quiet, contemplative film that chronicles

to-mid aughts. Lipsky’s pitch to Rolling Stone, it’s very clear, is less about profiling the most famous writer in America in 1996, and more

a five-day conversation between Wallace and Rolling Stone reporter David Lipsky during the final leg of Wallace’s Infinite Jest publicity tour. The film opens Friday at the Cedar Lee and should immediately become the best movie about writers and writing you’ve seen since 2002’s Adaptation.

Lipsky, portrayed by the sniveling Jesse Eisenberg, was himself a Wallace idolator. He had that in common with just about every young, college-educated white male who considered himself a serious reader, deep thinker, or budding novelist in the late ’90s and early-

about sidling up to a figure he held in both esteem and contempt. More than to be Wallace’s pal, Lipsky wanted to be Wallace’s clone, to experience the special reverence with which Wallace was treated in libraries and bookstores. (And minus the sniveling contempt, this is ironically how Wallace himself often approached professional tennis players: What is it this guy’s got, he asked more than once, that I don’t?) To cast the Lipsky/Wallace division in starker relief, Lipsky had published a novel at the same time, and even his girlfriend (Anna Chlumsky) prefers Infinite Jest.

So the two Davids chat — or spar — as Lipsky’s tape recorder eternally listens in. Wallace, who can’t help but enjoy the spotlight of literary fame, is also extremely anxious about its trappings. He resists Lipsky’s deeper probings and tries to communicate just how nuanced and suspect the idea of literary celebrity is. He’s deeply concerned about his image. In his work, and certainly over the course of 1,079 pages in Infinite Jest, Wallace labored to delineate the ways in which personal (and societal) quests for pleasure-at-all-costs could result in loneliness and doom. And his conversation with Lipsky, much of it lifted word-for-word from Lipsky’s transcripts which became the book Although of Course You End Up Becoming Yourself, continually boomerangs back to those themes.

This isn’t a script written by a fan trying to sound like Wallace. This is, for the most part, the unvarnished conversation itself, in diners, malls and living rooms, often as not over cigarettes and pop. Director James Ponsoldt (Spectacular Now) doesn’t try to impose an artificial narrative over the chit chat. Lipsky travels to the flat, snowy expanse

SPOTLIGHT: MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E., WHICH opens areawide on Friday, predates me. Despite having grown up in a basic-cable home filled with Perry Mason, Dick Van Dyke Show and Green Acres reruns, I had no familiarity with the characters or the premise behind this particular beloved 1960s television series. The film reboot stars Superman Henry Cavill (a Brit playing American CIA agent Napoleon Solo) and Lone Ranger Armie Hammer (an American playing Russian KGB agent Illya Kuryakin) as two spies representing different sides of the Cold War who, in a twist of fate, are forced to band together to face a common enemy.

Highly stylized to evoke the period, Man from U.N.C.L.E. is visually seductive. It has an early James Bond feel to it which perhaps shouldn’t be surprising given the

fact that 007 creator Ian Fleming had something to do with the early concepts for the original TV show.

The plot involves ensuring nuclear technology doesn’t end up in the wrong hands. Naturally, the destruction of the world as these international men of mystery know it hangs in the balance. The key to figuring out a way to turn it all around lies with the sultry, headstrong daughter of a German scientist (Gaby, played by Ex Machina’s Alicia Vikander).

Although there’s humor, sexual tension and action to spare, it’s not the Guy Ritchie (RocknRolla, Snatch, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels) movie you’d expect.

Certainly, it’s smart and lots of fun.

But it’s also slightly slower paced and a little more of a literal homage than you imagined when your pulse first quickened with excited

anticipation at early trailers.

In interviews, Cavill and Hammer have admitted even they didn’t know anything about Man from U.N.C.L.E. when they signed on. (Hammer binge-watched early seasons. Cavill left it as a clean slate.) If that’s any indication, there’s likely to be many potential moviegoers who would be unmotivated by nostalgia. In recent years audiences have seen secret agent updates done in two ways: updated with amazing stars and stunts on steroids (Mission Impossible, James Bond) or satirized (Austin Powers). Even the comedic Get Smart remake was set in modern times. It feels like Man from U.N.C.L.E.— unknown to many and holding true to its inspiration — could have a more difficult time finding an audience than taking down a super villain.

Ponsoldt knows that the exchange, at either end of which is a writer with his own set of secrets and priorities and fears, is rife with tension. To say nothing of the fact that Wallace committed suicide in 2008, and the entire conversation is presented in the foreshadow of that tragedy. Segel and Eisenberg manage to take what on its face might seem like a dull and selfconscious exercise into a powerful and at times really beautiful film about fame and ambition and the ever-mythologized writer’s life.

80-year-old Jaworski Meats keeps Polish meat market tradition alive and well

By Douglas Trattner THE VERY SAME YEAR THAT Eliot Ness was brought in as Cleveland’s new safety director, Fred Jaworski opened up a small butcher shop in Slavic Village’s old Newburgh Market, which happened to be within walking distance of Kingsbury Run, where another “butcher” had recently set up shop.

Jaworski’s was just one of countless Polish meat markets that dotted Broadway and Fleet avenues as the area was home to one of the largest concentration of Poles in the region.

Sadly, almost all of those butcher shops are long gone, laid waste by attrition, suburban flight and the rise of the supermarket.

But this isn’t yet another eulogy for a Cleveland icon lost to history.

No, this is a story of improbable success fueled by tradition, customer service and staunch loyalty. That Jaworski Meats has managed to survive for eight decades, through lush times and lean, is proof that sometimes the good guys do win.

Walk into the Middleburg Heights storefront, Jaworski’s home for the past 10 years, and you’ll see a big, bright, bustling marketplace, the furthest thing from a meat mausoleum on its last, wobbly legs.

Arrive midday midweek and you’ll see a line snaking through the store populated by ravenous lunch customers, each silently praying that he or she makes it to the counter before the last of the smoked brisket has been claimed.

Good luck finding any of those at the local Pick-n-Pay. “Pork belly,” Mark mutters. “They all keep asking for pork belly.”

“It gets a little crazy,” admits Mark Jaworski, Fred’s son. In fact, he recently reinstalled the take-a-number machine that was decommissioned some years back in hopes of pacifying the crowds. It helped. Some.

Butcher shops like Jaworski that were scrappy enough to weather the lean years — decades? — have arrived at a time in American food when butchers are celebrated, not

like the proverbial kid in a candy store. Hundreds of feet of gleaming stainless steel coolers were brimming with hand-cut chops, house-ground beef, slow-roasted meats, and hot-smoked sausages.

Behind the counter, mammoth wooden butcher blocks, bowed in the middle from a million little cuts, are piled high with steaks getting a final trim. Want a 3-inch-thick bonein ribeye? Just ask.

Many independent shopkeepers tout customer service as the big differentiator between big and small business. At Jaworski, you experience that first hand. When a local tavern wants a couple hundred steaks that they can sell for $5 a pop, nephew Adam digs deep for just the right cut: the versatile, tasty and affordable ball tip steak. When a customer asks about all-beef hotdogs, Mark points to a pile of fat weenies from Dearborn. “The only good thing to come out of Michigan,” he says without missing a beat.

You can count on one hand the places that still make kishka, the Eastern European blood sausage made from “head meat,” buckwheat and barley, or sekanice, a special Slovenian ham loaf that weighs down the traditional Easter table.

Jaworski does, along with head cheese, kielbasa loaf, stuffed cabbage and a dozen soups, including oxtail and dill pickle.

This might just be the best time in American to be a butcher, appreciated, at long last, for the skill, craft and passion they bring to the table. In a time when everything old is new again, when Old World ways no longer are looked upon as quaint but honorable, just and even ethical, good butchers like Mark Jaworski stand to benefit.

Last Saturday, the Jaworski family held an anniversary celebration to thank their customers for another year in business.

That makes 80 if you’re counting.

Customers enjoyed live music, free snacks and the warm thanks of an appreciative family that has made a living by keeping its community well fed.

IF IT SEEMS LIKE WE’VE BEEN hearing about the soon-to-open Roxu Asian Fusion for the past few years, that’s because we have been.

The restaurant, located by Barrio in the Uptown district of Lakewood, has been “coming soon” for two years. But the fi nish line is fast approaching says management, with a scheduled opening just two or three weeks out.

Most of the delays have been thanks to construction, with the owners — Christoff Short and Kim Novotney — taking on much of the work themselves.

The main floor of the building at 15607 Madison Avenue, once three separate storefronts, has been combined into a single 3,000-square-foot space. When it opens later this month, Roxu will accommodate approximately 90 guests in a sleek, modern dining room and bar.

Bar and Johnny’s Downtown, describes the bill of fare as his take on a tapas-style Asian fusion eatery. Yes, there will be sushi, but the menu goes well past raw and rolled fish, he says.

“I love Asian food personally — the sushi and fresh fish — but the fusion is the fun part of it,” he says.

Imagine cuisines like Chinese, Japanese and Korean mingled with our Midwestern ingredients and sensibilities and you begin to get an idea of what to expect.

In Dippong’s hands, comfort foods like chicken and waffles or barbecued ribs and slaw get an Asian spin. The menu will feature snacks like fish ribs, duck wings, fried rice and tuna poke, and larger plates like noodle and rice bowls like bibimbop.

The bar will offer cocktails made with fresh fruit, sake and even tea.

The name, by the way, is an Asian play on “rocks you.” Owner Short was born in the Far East.

It is with gusto that the third new business in Phase II of the Flats East Bank development has come to life. The Big Bang dueling piano bar opened on the heels of Alley Cat Oyster Bar and FWD Day and Nightclub, both of which unlocked their doors earlier this month. Big Bang (1163 Front Ave., 216-417-6222) officially opened last Friday.

“We’re thrilled to be bringing dueling pianos to Cleveland, along with some of the best talent in the country,” says owner Meredyth Muller, who founded the company with Sam Leatherwood back in 2001.

Cleveland will be one of four currently operating locations, joining one in Columbus.

Those of us who recall Howl at the Moon, which closed about four years back, will be very familiar with the entertainment concept. Both feature live piano players fielding requests from tipsy audience members. The acts are peppered with comedy bits, and those attending for special occasions can look forward to being called up on stage for goodnatured shaming.

What sets Big Bang apart, says Jaime Schneider, director of operations, is the level of talent behind the keys and the playlist, which leans more contemporary than classic rock. Tables are stocked with request sheets that guests fi ll out and hand over to the performers.

“It’s all about audience participation,” notes Schneider.

Guests will enjoy a wide-open floorplan that gives everybody great sightlines to the stage. A

large horseshoe bar is pushed to the perimeter of the room, while a second smaller bar has access to a patio via a garage door. There is seating for 150 at mostly high-tops but room for 350 throughout.

During the week, no reservations or cover charges are needed to attend — guests are welcome to come and go as they please — but Big Bang does sell table reservations for groups of four and more.

A small plates menu of “modern bar food” will feature hot and cold appetizers like bruschetta, flatbreads and sliders. There will be a dozen draft beers, most of it local craft. A specialty cocktail menu will be built around quality, says Schneider, but not ego. “The cocktails are fun and playful, but we don’t take things too seriously.”

“The energy in the Flats is incredible,” adds owner Sam Leatherwood. “We’re so excited to be a part of it, and can’t wait to see where it goes from here.”

Dedicated punk icons Social Distortion bring anniversary tour to town

By Jeff Niesel THE MORE THINGS CHANGE, the more Social Distortion stays the same.

At least that’s the impression the band left in 2012 at House of Blues for the first of two sold-out shows.

While singer-guitarist Mike Ness might have exchanged his wifebeater for a baggy suit and fedora that made him look like some kind of tattooed gangster, the guy has retained his signature punk rock snarl.

He sounded particularly good on “I Was Wrong,” the confessional tune that the band played at the opening of the 90-minute show. While he had to have the song’s lyrics on stage with him just in case he forgot the words, Ness had no trouble delivering the song in all its ragged glory. The same went for “So Far Away” and “Bad Luck,” the next two songs he and his bandmates ripped through.

While Social D.’s rip-roaring anti-establishment anthems went over best with the audience, the set’s highlights were the songs that showed off the group’s rockabilly roots. “Bakersfield,” a tune about the desolate California town just north of L.A., had a certain eloquence to it and found the band turning the guitars down so Ness could make the line about walking out to a “lonely truck stop” really resonate. And the group almost sounded like a folk act on “Sometimes I Do,” a tune the singer introduced by saying, “You don’t have to be Irish to like this next song, but it certainly helps.” The guys even brought out a stand-up bass for the Carl Perkins’ track “Let the Jukebox Keep on Playing” and stayed true to the song’s roots-rock feel.

Ness was in fine form throughout the night and regularly bantered with the audience as he recalled the band’s first show in Cleveland back in

1982. He said something disparaging about Cincinnati in the process, but no one seemed to take offense. The band left the best for last, delivering a raucous rendition of Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire” that sent the crowd into a frenzy. The band has always had a strong Cleveland connection, something that guitarist Jonny Wickersham acknowledges in a recent phone interview.

“Cleveland is just a great rock ’n’ roll town,” he says from his Los Angeles home, adding that the Cleveland date on the current tour was the first show outside of the tour’s SoCal dates to sell out.

The current tour is a special one too. The band will celebrate the 25th anniversary release of its self-titled effort. That album was the band’s third studio effort and first for Epic

Records. It became their best-selling album worldwide. Singles “Story of My Life,” “Ball and Chain,” “Ring of Fire” and “Let It Be Me” all reached Top 25 Billboard single chart positions. This past Record Store Day, the album was re-released on limited edition color vinyl.

As part of the tour, the band achieved another goal. It just played its 50th show at House of Blues on

MUSIC the Sunset Strip in L.A. The club is closing and Social D wanted to bid farewell with a bang.

“We decided to add a couple of nights and make it 50,” says Wickersham. “It’s the end of an era.

I can remember when that place first opened up.”

Released some 25 years ago, Social Distortion represented a real breakthrough for the group. Even though Wickersham didn’t play on the album, he instantly appreciated it from the first time he heard it.

“Well, for me, it’s interesting because I wasn’t in the band,” he says. “I was around and around the band a lot. I was playing in a different band. We had put out our first record that year. Social D was a lot bigger than us and had been around for about 12 years. I remember when that [album] came out and we watched Social D jump up to a whole new level. It was a groundbreaking record for sure.

They went from a van to a bus and started playing big shows and went on tour with guys like Neil Young. They had already gotten airplay locally on KROQ for [the anthem] ‘Prison Bound.’ They’ve been playing them since it was just

Wickersham says he can remember hearing “So Far Away” and immediately liking it.

“It’s a super catchy, fucking cool song,” he says. “The material is good and the record is great and the timing is perfect. Ultimately, I think it comes down to timing for anything. You could put out a great record at the wrong time and it won’t make a difference. Everything has to line up. You could put out a horrible record at the right time and it could make a huge impression.”

At times, the ride has been a rough one for the band. When original guitarist Dennis Danell passed away in 2000, Ness thought about calling it a day.

“He was going to put the band down,” says Wickersham. “But he changed his mind at some point and decided the best thing to do was to keep it going. We agreed that that’s what Dennis wanted to do.”

Wickersham says the current lineup is one of the band’s best. “[Bassist] Brent [Harding] has been in the band since 2004, since right after we put out Sex, Love and Rock ’n’ Roll. [Drummer David] Hidalgo has been in the band right after we put out Hard Times and Nursery Rhymes in 2011. It’s super stable. The line-up is ridiculous.

the Rodney [Bingenhemier] show. I was just a kid then but I remember hearing ‘1945’ and ‘Mainliner’ on Rodney’s show. They played the shit out of ‘Prison Bound’ when that record came out. This next record was a whole different thing.”

Social Distortion became a huge breakthrough for the band. “Story of My Life,” “Ball and Chain,” “Ring of Fire” and “Let It Be Me” all charted as singles.

“I think the universal themes of ‘Ball and Chain’ and ‘Story of My Life’ were significant,” he says. “I remember thinking that ‘Story of My Life’ was a real departure. I heard some demos. I don’t know if it was a rough mix tape or something.

I heard some early stuff before it came out and I thought they were branching out into a different direction. It didn’t not make sense.

It’s rootsy Americana and I know that’s where Mike was headed. It really, really worked. I don’t know if he even thought that would happen.

Given that Ness & Co. have had such a tumultuous ride, what exactly keeps the guys going?

“I think it’s just what we do,” says Wickersham. “This is our life and nobody in this band set up anything else. We’ve been doing it since we were kids. We literally jumped into a van early in our lives and started touring. We dedicated our entire lives to it. There’s no point in ever stopping, for better or worse.”

The Missing’s Chris Stevens embraces sobriety to reunite band and re-launch record label

By Jeff Niesel FIVE HUNDRED AND SIXTEEN. That’s the number of days that Chris Stevens (formerly Christopher Marinin), the lead singer in the local rock band the Missing, has been sober. He knows the number. Ask him tomorrow, and he’ll tell you it’s 517 days. He doesn’t have to run the numbers in his head.

Stevens, who works as a sales rep at JakPrints, has a clearheadedness about him that suggests sobriety has sharpened his focus. He talks about the reunion of the band — which will play its fi rst show in more than a year this Saturday at Lakewood’s 5 O’Clock Lounge —with true enthusiasm one recent afternoon from the JakPrints offices in downtown Cleveland. The group’s music has just become available on iTunes for the very fi rst time.

And he’s jumpstarted his former record label, Ghost Laboratories, and is creating a content production company called Stevens Creative.

Stevens has been connected to the local music scene for years.

He grew up with Stitch (Richard Thomas), another local musician who would join the local metal act Mushroomhead. Thomas always encouraged him to start a band.

“He ultimately pushed me to start playing guitar and play out,” says the wiry Stevens. “He said he would help me and he did. We’re still close friends and I really like all those guys.”

In 2004, Stevens formed Who Killed Marilyn?, a band whose emo-punk sound corresponded to what was popular at the time.

“People called us emo but I preferred the term alternative,” says Stevens. “Because we were young guys with dyed black hair, we had the look. We were in the scene. We had a good chance to play with [the alternative rock band] Thrice before they got big.”

Then with the metal band Dead Even, a group he was asked to join, he says he sharpened his guitar playing skills. After a couple of years with Dead Even and Who

band put out two full-lengths, two EPs and a live album that it recorded at Groovebox Studios in Detroit. Stevens was featured in the fi lm Long Way to the Top, an indie movie that screened

“It was a big thing for me because I had dropped out of school three times,” he says.

“Music burned me out and touring unsuccessfully for five years was tough. I was tired of eating Chex Mix and apples.”

But he couldn’t leave music behind, and the Missing started as a solo project in 2008; things quickly “skyrocketed.” The

in the Cleveland International Film Festival. “Prizefi ghter,” a track from last year’s White Gold, features a mix of melodic vocals and heavy guitars that suggests a cross between early Social Distortion and ’90s numetal/alternative rock. The band appeared to be going somewhere and had high-profi le shows at Warped Tour and Roverfest.

But Stevens couldn’t stay sober.

Stevens didn’t drink until he was 22. But once he started drinking, he couldn’t stop. He says he can’t remember playing a show sober or working sober as a bartender at Peabodys. The Missing released an album that didn’t do very well and stopped touring. He became a recluse.

In 2013, he realized he had a problem. He says all of his relationships were deteriorating.

“People thought I was the crazy frontman but they didn’t realize the amount that I drank,” he says.

“We lost out on record label deals and management deals. I derailed so much progress. We had the opportunity to play with [the punk band] Everytime I Die. We played a show that we looked at as an audition for a spot on the tour.

I played well but my post-show behavior ruined it for us. I feel that drinking ultimately led to the downfall of the Missing after we were being pushed to be the next big thing out of Cleveland. It’s a lot of guilt to carry.”

Now the Missing is writing new songs and working on a new album, and Stevens also says he wants to take his solo career more seriously as well. Over the years, Stevens says he’s had opportunities to move to Los Angeles, Chicago and Nashville to pursue his musical ambitions but chose to stay in Cleveland.

“With Cleveland, it’s costeffective,” he says. “It’s expensive to have a band. From here, you can play Nashville, Chicago or New York. It’s centralized. And the scene is so small that if you do something of significance, you can get recognized. The weather sucks. My fi rst sober winter was really hard. I never realized how cold it got. I would go to Browns games during my drinking days wearing tennis shoes. Now I have to bundle up.”

MUSIC FWD THINKING Canadian EDM duo DVBBS to help christen new club FWD

By Jeff Niesel BACK IN APRIL, SCENE dining editor Douglas Trattner reported on the opening of FWD Dayclub + Nightclub Cleveland, a new seasonal, open-air nightclub in the Flats East Bank. The club, which features a 4,000-square-foot pool and deck area with a full bar, elevated decking and custom day beds, is now open. It’s situated right on the Cuyahoga River and offers views of both the river and of Lake Erie. Train tracks run right behind the club. The pool will be an amenity to people living in nearby apartments during the day but then will be a membersonly club on weekends and at night.

The place can accommodate up to 1,000 guests. FWD is mainly an open-air venue, but about 2,000 square feet are covered and can provide protection from the weather when needed. The place doesn’t serve food (and doesn’t intend to serve food), but you can bring your own grub or order from the surrounding restaurants. After a “soft opening” held earlier this month, the club is officially open and will play host to a “Sunset Pool Party” — reportedly the fi rst of its kind in Cleveland — this Friday, when DVBBS, a Canadian EDM act featuring brothers Alex and Chris, performs.

“We’ve run into people who don’t get the concept and can’t wrap their brain around it,” says promoter and occasional Scene contributing writer Will Burge, who has booked DVBBS to play the club and plans to book at least one act a month while the club is open in the summer months. Burge runs the local promotions and events company Witty Entertainment with his business partner, event coordinator/operations manager Jena Gura. He says FWD offers a

unique opportunity for promoters.

He and Gura are speaking to us one recent afternoon while the FWD pool is being fi lled from the nearby hydrant and construction crews are hammering away at the container-like structure as they put the fi nishing touches on the club, which, as much as it attempts to mimic the pool clubs in Las Vegas, still has Cleveland characteristics: A smoke stack is situated in the middle of the main bar and the club is surrounded by the type of containers you see on railways.

The song has a soaring vocal track and features the kind of ricocheting beats that typify most contemporary dubstep tunes.

“We’re excited about DVBBS because we did our fi rst [EDM] event in February,” says Burge.

“It was an indoor EDM festival.

We didn’t want to shove a DJ into a nightclub. We wanted to fi nd a different element and do something that had a different feel and elevated what’s happening in the EDM scene in Cleveland, which is lacking, not from a fan

standpoint but from a promoter standpoint. DVBBS won’t go to Agora or House of Blues. They only want to play festivals and outdoor pool parties so this fit that bill. They were originally in a rock band in Canada and they switched genres and then things took off. This will be the biggest EDM brought into town this summer that’s not playing at Jacob’s Pavilion at Nautica. These guys are wild. They crowd surf and spray champagne.”

“They’re like your typical rock

stars,” says Gura.

The club even has a “quiet area” where you can escape the music. But, as Burge points out, “with this sound system, there is no quiet area.” The club’s sound system is a Funktion-One sound system.

“It’s the fi rst in North America,” says Burge. “It’s top of the line and elite. Vegas clubs haven’t even installed this system yet. It’s the fi rst of its kind and it got put in here. Because the sound system is so good, it’s really focused and you can’t hear it outside in the parking lot.”

The event includes several ticket tiers and VIP tickets offer access to the pool and the VIP dance floor behind the DJ booth.

Cabanas with bottle service are available as well.

“This brings an element that hasn’t been here before,” Burge says of the club. “There have never been pool parties in Cleveland and there aren’t many outdoor clubs.

The pool is different and people are excited about it. And we’re really excited about it too. It has a uniqueness to it so that every big artist in the genre will want to perform here.”

Keb’ Mo’: Keb’ Mo’ dropped Bluesamericana last year, notching a new chapter for his career and merging the traditional scene from which he grows with the finger-pickin’ uber-popular world of indie Americana music (a la the Lumineers, etc.). “I only make albums when I’m inspired to, and these 10 songs come from a very honest place,” he said at the time.

And it’s a great album. Opener “The Worst is Yet to Come” sets the stage with the blues great’s deep voice arcing across banjos, harmonicas and a steady sixstring lope. Throughout, the album teeters expectedly more toward the blues, but Keb’ Mo’ injects enough “new” influences to make it an intriguing collection of songs for anyone interested in fine guitar work.

And while we’re at it, don’t sleep on his 1994 debut. Stellar blues.

Todd Rundgren — Global: Singerguitarist Todd Rundgren has spent the past couple of years playing a series of tour dates billed as An Unpredictable Evening with Todd Rundgren, and it’s quite appropriate, because “unpredictable” is a perfect summary of his career in a nutshell. It’s all part of the “choose your own adventure” feeling that comes with being a Rundgren fan. More than four decades into his career, the veteran artist and producer continues to be driven to explore the new challenges and ideas whenever the inspiration might strike. He’s keenly aware that his musical experiments can test the limits and patience of his fans, and yet if there’s a line, it doesn’t seem like he’s afraid of driving over it. The past few years have found Rundgren in an interesting place, spending time taking stock and learning how his work has influenced new generations of artists, an experience which spawned the album State in 2013.

Wild Adriatic/Take Off Charlie/ The Pistolettes: Managing to sound more like an American rock orchestra at times than the trio that they are, Wild Adriatic has been carving up a fine vibe on the regional touring circuit these past few years. The band’s 2014 album, Big Suspicious, kicks around a big, big sound on 12 heavy tracks. “40 Days 40 Nights (Hard Times)” carries singer Travis Gray’s soaring vocals across tight, soulful riffs and enticing percussion.

“Cooperstown” slows the tempo a bit, showcasing the band’s more atmospheric songwriting chops. Throughout the album, Gray’s guitar work gets the fuzz treatment, evoking the inspirational strains of Dan Auerbach’s early, Akron-born playing. Chuck Mead & His Grassy Knoll Boys/Lost State of Franklin: Back in the ’90s, BR549 was one of the leading alt-country acts.

On numerous occasions, the band packed the Beachland Ballroom and put on some fantastic shows.

BR549 is no longer together, but frontman Chuck Mead has carried on as a solo artist. His most recent album, Free State Serenade, retains the band’s signature sound. Album opener “Knee Deep in the Wakarusa River” features Mead’s distinctive vocals and some twangy slide guitar riffs. With its hiccupping backing vocals, “On a Slow Train Through Arkansas” is good fun, and the same goes for the Blasters-like “Evil Wind.” (Niesel), 8:30 p.m., $15.

the Asbury Jukes took a trip to the past on 2012’s Men Without Women: Live 7-2-11.

Though it’s a live recording of a show he played in 2011, the record features Southside and the Asbury Jukes performing songs from Little Steven’s 1982 album. Longtime friends with both Steven (a founding member of the Jukes) and Bruce Springsteen, Southside Johnny has released more than 30 albums in a career that stretches back to the early ’70s.

The Flatliners/Signals Midwest/ toyGuitar/Timeshares: Holding down the ska-punk scene with aplomb, the Flatliners delivered another solid album this year — opening up their sound on a slightly more accessible angle.

This is heavy stuff at times, but there’s often a very simple and enticing backbone to these songs — “melodic hardcore” is how at least a few critics have labeled the band. “This Guy Reads from a Card,” for instance, chugs along power-chord verses and explosive choruses, tossing in ska-type riffs and rhythms midway through the song for good measure. “Sleep is for Bitches” kind of gives you the tenor of the band’s lyrics, and it also gives audiences a great opportunity to skank wildly and throw down on the dance floor.

GARAGE ROCK: The band began in 2010 as an outlet for the pop songs that weren’t quite right for Brown and Gerycz’s “noisy project” Swindlella.

The band recorded the album in a Medina garage. “We didn’t have much of a clue as to what we were doing,” says Brown. “We had never written songs in that style before.

We also didn’t know how to record; that’s why it sounds all blown out and crazy. We just wanted to make a rock record.” “We goofed around with writing some pop rock tunes and had fun,” says Brown.

The group released its debut, Swimming Through Sunlight, in 2011 by Old Flame Records.

BACK TO THE BASEMENT: The band didn’t go to a proper studio to cut its latest album, Heydays, which it recorded last year in a Middleburg Heights basement. “The songs that made the record were written in the six months leading up the rerecording,” says Brown. “We felt we had grow as musicians and been able to play these songs a lot better.

Our friend mixed it and beefed up everything and made it sound good. Playing with John [Elliott] opens so much up. He came in and added a whole new element to it and opened up the songs a lot. Nathan [Ward] is a rock back there on bass, which is perfect for what we need.”

WHY YOU SHOULD HEAR THEM: Heydays is a great indie pop record that features sharp hooks and accessible songs. The tune “Bone Dry Eyes,” for example, benefits from raspy vocals and escalating guitars.

“It’s about being bored with the environment you’re in,” says Brown when asked about the tune. “It’s about being stuck and stagnating and wanting to get out of that. I was just feeling that I needed to get out of a toxic situation. I deliver pretty intensely on that one.” The songs have a Brit-pop feel but Brown says that isn’t intentional. “The songs just came out naturally,” he says. “I like Yo La Tengo, Silver Jews and bands

who have been doing it for a minute who are always consistently good.”

“Sunnyside,” a song that consists of a single piano riff, comes off as one of the most evocative songs on the disc. “I just never had a home for that song,” says Brown, adding that the track “has been around for awhile.” “It never felt right with every other project but it makes sense on this record.”
