A U.S. federal appeals court last week temporarily blocked President Joe Biden’s order mandating that companies with 100 or more employees require their workers to get vaccinated or submit to weekly COVID-19 testing. Texas was among the states that filed a joint petition challenging the order.

Gov. Greg Abbott accomplished the impressive feat of losing two court cases on the same day last Wednesday. Both state and federal courts ruled against Abbott on issues related to his orders banning localities from issuing mask mandates. A federal judge ruled that banning schools from requiring masks violates the Americans with Disabilities Act, while a state appeals court ruled that San Antonio can issue a mandate while a suit questioning the legality of Abbott’s order is litigated.

Warner Bros. last week sent a ceaseand-desist letter to the local bar ownership group planning a Harry Potter-themed pub crawl in San Antonio. In its letter, a California-based attorney wrote that the pub crawl “attempts to take advantage of and improperly benefit from the enormous goodwill already established in the Harry Potter properties” — goodwill threatened in recent years by the transphobia of author J.K. Rowling. The renamed crawl will take place Nov. 18.

Delta-8 THC is, for the moment, legal in Texas again. Travis County District Judge Jan Soifer last week issued an injunction barring the state from enforcing its ban on the sale of the compound. Retailers began offering Delta-8 after the Texas Legislature passed a 2019 law legalizing the sale of hemp. However, the state health department placed it on its list of illegal drugs in October. — Abe Asher

‘Taking over’ Texas school boards with ‘Christocrat’ Rick Scarborough Assclown Alert is a column of opinion, analysis and snark.

Self-described “Christocrat” — apparently shorthand for “homophobic foe of the separation of church and state” — Rick Scarborough has doubled down on his threat to help conservative evangelicals “take over” Texas school boards.

Four candidates backed by the far-right activist were successful in forcing runoffs this month for seats on the Houston Independent School District’s board. And he’s now raising money

The analysis, which tracked data from September 4 through October 1, also found that unvaccinated people were 13 times more likely to contract the virus than people who have received their jabs.

Scarborough has said that once he’s flipped those Houston boards, he’ll turn his sights — and his fundraising efforts — to others across the state. Of course, the outcome of those Houston ISD runoffs will offer clues whether Scarborough has the political heft to carry through with his threat.

The name of Scarborough’s podcast, “Mixing Church and State God’s Way,” provides a clear view of his agenda. But if that’s not reason enough for concern, the activist has also claimed God would “probably give us the cure for AIDS today” if the U.S. stopped supporting LGBTQ rights and that Santa Claus leads kids to Satan, according to Right Wing Watch’s reporting.

Regardless of how successful Scarborough is in engineering a statewide power grab, this is one assclown who has no business tampering with Texas schools. — Sanford Nowlin

The infrastructure bill passed by the U.S. House of Representatives earlier this month will set aside $35 billion for Texas projects. While much of that will be sunk into maintenance, an estimated $3.3 billion will be used to advance public transit projects around the state — a figure many experts feel is insufficient given Texas’ expanding population and the threat of climate change. Texas could also receive money to weatherize its energy infrastructure. — Abe Asher

Crusader for Chaos

Yes, Gov. Greg Abbott’s witch hunt for ‘porn’ in public schools is laughable — but it’s not without consequences

I

t’s tempting to write off Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s absurd call for criminal charges against teachers and school librarians who supply “pornographic” materials to kids as mere political theater.

After all, it’s an utter joke from a legal standpoint.

Abbott issued his demand last week in a letter to the Texas Education Agency, which has no law enforcement personnel. Further, the two books the governor has so far cited as evidence of “obscene” material in Texas schools wouldn’t qualify under U.S. Supreme Court precedent.

Texans have also witnessed a cavalcade of stunts from Abbott in recent months as he looks to stave off challenges from far-right candidates in the upcoming Republican primary. Those range from his “steel wall” of DPS vehicles at the border to a San Antonio press conference where he claimed with no proof that a federal migrant shelter was abusing teens.

Yes, like those grabs for attention, Abbott’s letter to the TEA is pure look-at-me grandstanding. Legal and political experts say there’s little chance school employees will be jailed because of his call to prosecute alleged campus porn pushers “to the fullest extent of the law.”

“I suppose he could ask the TEA to do anything,” said Michael S. Ariens, a St. Mary’s University Law School expert in constitutional law. “The question is what the TEA will do with it. I’m guessing the answer is: as little as possible.

But, as with much of Abbott’s hard-right posturing, there will be damage left in the letter’s wake.

Just as the “steel wall” photo op had the real-world consequences of diluting law enforcement resources and draining public coffers, the governor’s anti-“porn” crusade has repercussions for Texas’ already beleaguered education system.

The disruption comes as students, educators and parents muddle through another school year made even more trying by the pandemic. It also instigates more chaos for districts already dealing with angry anti-mask diatribes and board meetings overtaken

by Qanon conspiracy theories and threats against educators.

Abbott’s TEA letter followed days after Democrat Terry McAuliffe’s loss in the Virginia gubernatorial election. The timing is no accident, according to political observers. McAuliffe’s trouncing came after he became a target of growing parental ire by saying, “I don’t think parents should be telling schools what

they should teach.”

“This investigation will politicize Texas’s education system, send a deeply alarming message of exclusion to LGBTQ+ students, and treat librarians and teachers as potential criminals for doing their jobs,” said Jonathan Friedman, PEN America’s director of free expression and education in a statement emailed to the Current. “Gov. Abbott claims that he is making these moves to protect children, but instead he is disrupting their education for political gain.”

To Friedman’s point, Abbott’s crusade comes as LGBTQ+ students and students of color face increasing marginalization in Texas schools. This year, the state’s Republican-controlled legislature passed laws banning the teaching of critical race theory and limiting the participation of transgender athletes in school sports.

The letter and its timing demonstrate the governor’s willingness to weaponize chaos for his own political gain. Rather than attempt to solve any of the real problems plaguing Texas schools, it creates one to villainize educators who have struggled to do their best during one of the most difficult times in their

careers.

Further, Abbott’s directive to the TEA shows just how disingenuous he was as he proclaimed himself a champion of free speech by prioritizing a bill passed

by Texas lawmakers that bars social media networks from “censoring” the voices of right-wing users.

Indeed, the letter comes against a backdrop of national fervor to ban controversial material from school campuses.

This month, two members of Virginia’s Spotsylvania County School Board said its vote to ban “sexually explicit” books from library shelves didn’t go far enough. They wanted to see the material burned.

Deborah Caldwell-Stone, director of the American Library Association’s Office for Intellectual Freedom, last week told the New York Times that she’s endured a “steady hum of censorship” during her 20 years with the group. “But I’ve never seen the number of challenges we’ve seen this year.”

Clearly, Abbott’s concern for free speech, like his concern for Texas’ schools and children, is subservient to one top priority: his own political gain. sacurrent.com | November 17 – November 30, 2021 | CURRENT

here’s no shortage of reasons to shop local as we head into the holidays.

The dollars we spend with San Antonio-based businesses stay in our community via local sales taxes, employee paychecks and more. They also fund businesses rooted in our city and that won’t pull up their tent stakes at the first sign of an economic slump. And haven’t we all reached the point of exhaustion with ordering crap from Amazon?

The Current has long trumpeted the importance of shopping locally around the holidays and has tried to direct readers to Alamo City businesses that offer unique and dazzling gifts.

This year, however, we decided to approach our annual Shop Local guide a little differently.

Rather than compiling the lists ourselves, we asked SA-area artists, creators and personalities to discuss the homegrown gifts they would love to receive this season. What’s more, we asked them to touch on some of their favorite past gifts and talk about why keeping dollars local is vital to them.

Encanto’s top-tier stars chat about superpowers, favorite tíos and family reputations

T

he Madrigal family at the center of Disney’s newest animated feature Encanto is massive — and magical.

In the film, each member of the extended Colombian family is blessed with a unique talent on their fifth birthday. From superhuman strength to shapeshifting skills, each special power contributes to the entire clan’s identity.

However, Mirabel Madrigal (Stephanie Beatriz) didn’t receive a special gift. She can’t make flowers bloom on command like her sister Isabela (Diane Guerrero) or heal people with food like her mother. Even so, she soon realizes that she might be the only person who can keep her family’s magical powers flourishing.

During an interview with the Current, Beatriz, Guerrero and Oscar-nominated songwriter and Broadway superstar Lin-Manuel Miranda (Moana), who wrote the music for Encanto, talked about what special power they would have enjoyed having as a kid and what makes their own families so extraordinary.

Encanto makes its theatrical debut Nov. 24.

Each child in Encanto receives a special power at the age of five. What supernatural talent would you have enjoyed the most at that age?

Diane Guerrero: I think talking with animals and riding on a massive saber-toothed tiger. I

think that would be the most fun for me.

Stephanie Beatriz: Honestly, I think when I was 5, I would’ve wanted to disappear. I would’ve wanted to be able to go invisible at any time — maybe because I often felt invisible. But if you had the power to do it yourself, you’d get to choose when you’re invisible, as opposed to feeling invisible all the time.

Lin-Manuel Miranda: What I fantasized the most about when I was 5 years old was having a full movie and television studio where I could make any movies I wanted. (Laughs.)

I’ve kept inching towards that superpower over the course of my life. I’m still chasing it!

Since Encanto features an extended family, who’s someone in your family, outside of your parents and siblings, who left a lasting impression on who you? Did you have a favorite cousin or tía?

Guerrero: Yeah, my Tía Milena. She’s such

an incredible soul — so generous and so mystical. She was always full of wonder and mystery. She always had so many things in all these little drawers. I would always go and get lost in those drawers. I really think she taught me the importance of imagination. I really love her for that.

Beatriz: For me, it was my Tío Guido. He’s passed away, but when I was in the second grade, [our family] visited California for the first time, and he took us to Disneyland. That was super magical and special. At the end of

Pirates of the Caribbean, he bought me this keychain. It was this little pewter skull on a ring. I had it for the longest time. It was really the only chance I got to hang out with him before he died. I really remember a lot about that trip. I remember him holding my hand during Pirates and telling me not to be scared because it was all for fun. Even if he was in my life for only a short time, he really made a deep and lasting impression.

Miranda: For me, it would be my great uncle Ernesto Concepción, who was the only member of my family in the arts. My grandmother ran a travel agency. My grandfather worked at a bank. My dad saw that I was very interested in having a creative life and was like, “Great! Be a lawyer!” But I knew that my grandmother’s brother was this beloved theater actor in Puerto Rico. We would always go see his plays whenever we were there, so I knew [a career in the arts] was possible. That was incredibly aspirational for me as a kid.

Describe your entire family in a few words.

Like, imagine your whole family walks into a party and people turn around and say, “Oh, here come the Mirandas. Here come the Guerreros. Here come the Beatrizes.”

What would they say about the group?

Beatriz: “Ay, ya vienen los locos … ya vienen.” (“Oh, here come the crazies … here they come.”) “Locura.” (“Craziness.”) “Crazy has arrived!”

Guerrero: I would say “alive.” No one in my family is just chill. I think they’d say, “Esta gente ser viva, no?” (“These people are alive, no?”)

Miranda: With my parents, it would be “sube la música.” (“Turn up the music.”) My dad will outdance anybody on the dance floor. He will dance to the slow songs and the fast songs.

The DJ will be trying to go home, and my dad will be sweaty and will just keep going.

Out of Quarantine, Into the Oven

Thanksgiving is almost here.

Ready to show off those pandemic baking skills?

hile the pandemic is still with us, this holiday season is likely to be a more positive experience that last year’s.

First and foremost, the Centers for Disease Control now says families can gather to celebrate, assuming everyone’s been vaccinated.

But second — for some of us anyway — the holiday marks our first opportunity to show off all the baking skills we honed during our quarantine time.

That’s why we’re sharing two dessert recipes for at-home holiday cooking. They’re not too difficult for baking hobbyists, and your grandmother may even reconsider where things went wrong with you.

Cibolo Moon’s Pecan Bourbon Tart The JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa is known for scenic views and championship golf courses, but the resort’s award-winning restaurant Cibolo Moon has merits of its own. The eatery offered up a recipe for its decadent Pecan Bourbon Tart for home cooks who like a little nip of bourbon while getting the big holiday meal together.

Ingredients:

Prepared (baked) 9-inch pie crust 2 cups granulated sugar ½ cup water 1 teaspoon lemon juice 1 cup whipping cream 2 eggs, separated 4 cups pecan pieces ½ cup bourbon of your choice

Method:

1. Prepare the filling by combining the sugar, lemon juice and water in a heavy saucepan and cook over low heat until the sugar dissolves, then raise the heat to medium and cook until it starts to turn to a light caramel color.

2. Remove the pan from the heat, carefully stir in the whipping cream and bourbon and allow the mixture to cool. Add egg yolks and pecan pieces and pour mixture into prepared pie crust.

3. Cover the edges of your crust with foil and

bake at 325 degrees Fahrenheit for about 40 minutes, or until the filling is set and the top lightly browned.

2. In a separate bowl, whisk together egg yolks, milk and heavy cream until well-combined and egg yolks are well broken up.

4. Allow the tart to cool, cut and serve.

3. While whisking the dry ingredients, drizzle the egg yolk mixture into the dry ingredients until completely combined.

Worth the Wait Chocolate Pie Six hours to make a pie may seem like overkill, but trust in the process. It’s worth it. This is one of the pies made every holiday at my family’s home, using the darkest chocolate a writer’s salary can afford. Slightly sweetened whipped cream lightens the chocolatey filling — if you choose to use it. I highly recommend you do.

Ingredients

1 baked 9-inch pie crust 1½ cups granulated sugar 5 Tablespoons cornstarch ¼ teaspoon salt 5 large egg yolks 2 cups whole milk 1 cup heavy cream 6 ounces of dark chocolate, finely chopped 4 Tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into pieces 1½ teaspoon vanilla extract Homemade whipped cream for topping

Method:

1. In a medium-sized, heavy-bottomed saucepan, whisk together sugar, cornstarch and salt.

4. Transfer saucepan to stovetop over medium heat and whisk frequently until ingredients begin to thicken. A note for those unaccustomed to making custards: this will take several minutes. Don’t crank up the heat or your filling may not thicken properly.

5. Once mixture has thickened — it should have a pudding-like consistency — whisk constantly, remove from heat and immediately add chopped chocolate, butter and vanilla extract. Stir until chocolate and butter are completely melted and mixture is smooth.

6. Pour pie filling through a fine mesh strainer into a medium-sized heatproof bowl.

7. Pour filling into prepared pie crust and place a piece of clear wrap or parchment paper directly against the surface of the chocolate to prevent a skin from forming on the surface of the pie as it cools. Allow to chill in the refrigerator at least 6 hours, or overnight, before slicing and serving.

8. Top with whipped cream just before serving. I like to add a big dollop of whipped cream right on top.

“It is with a heavy heart that we announce Pinch Downtown will be permanently closing its doors at the end of this year,” the post read. “If it were up to us, we’d be there forever, but we just want to thank everyone who has come through the shop and for rocking with

us for four glorious fucking years.”

In later comments on the post, a Pinch representative attributed the move to a lease that wasn’t renewed.

First launched as a pop-up concept, Pinch rapidly gained popularity for its fusion of Vietnamese and Thai flavors with Gulf Coast ingredients. In September 2017, Pinch moved into its first brick and mortar space on the first floor of The Rand Building at 124 N. Main Avenue.

San Antonio native Patricia Vonne heads back home for performance celebrating her new Christmas album

or some, singer-songwriter Patricia Vonne is best known as the sister of film director Robert Rodriguez. And, yes, she’s been in some of his movies, including Desperado, Spy Kids and Sin City.

But — to state the obvious — the famous San Antonio natives share more than an enthusiasm for film, they share a mother. And it was her who inspired Vonne to record her new Christmas album My Favorite Holiday.

Vonne and her band will celebrate the LP, which drops this week, with a Sunday, Nov. 28 release show at Sam’s Burger Joint.

The genesis of My Favorite Holiday came when Vonne started a San Antonio Food Bank drive to celebrate her mother’s 85th birthday. As part of the effort, the singer wrote a tune called “Santa’s on His Way” and sung it a capella on Facebook Live as she worked to drive donations.

“The basic needs for humans are food and shelter. No child should go hungry,” Vonne said. “I wanted to write a song for them in December.”

Her sister, who worked at the venue, helped her relocate to the Big Apple.

“It’s this celebrity club, and she let me cover her shifts,” Vonne said. “I wasn’t even 21.

We’re meeting Julian Lennon, David Lee Roth, David Bowie. Then my first gig was at the China Club. Because I worked there!”

Vonne’s career is filled with a notable mix of styles. Her most recent project prior to My Favorite Holiday was the Texicana Mamas, a folk-flavored collaboration with Tish Hinojosa and Stephanie Urbina Jones. Vonne said she lets her muse guide her through genre jumps.

“I always start with the title, and then it kind of writes itself,” she explained. “It’s really varied if you co-write with people.”

Vonne considers the essence of her music to be roots rock: “It’s acoustic-driven with an emphasis on melodies. I say it’s flamenco rock.” Her status as an independent artist without a major label “breathing down my neck” has enabled her to forge her own stylistic path, whether that leads to rock, country, folk — or a Christmas album.

The Drums at Paper Tiger Since New York’s The Drums became a solo act for member Jonny Pierce in 2017, the approach has shifted dramatically. Real drums have replaced programmed ones. Parental Advisory seals now feature in the album art, and the clean, bright feelings have been swapped out for Pierce’s darker, more raw writing style.
