Texas Gov. Greg Abbott issued an executive order last week banning private employers from issuing COVID-19 vaccine mandates. The order is the latest in a string of actions by Abbott to prevent various entities, including local governments and school districts, from requiring vaccinations for their workers. The state will likely be sued over the order, as a number of hospitals groups and corporations like Fort Worth-based American Airlines have already required vaccinations.

Community organizer, musician, and Northwest Vista College professor Keli Rosa Cabunoc Romero is hosting a new Food Network digital series on the culinary and cultural traditions of Día de los Muertos. The program, titled Día de los Muertos Menu, will have a five-episode run and features guests speaking about how they use food to honor departed loved ones around the holiday. Episodes are available on the Food Network’s website and social media channels.

The woman charged with the 2019 intoxication manslaughter of San Antonio cyclist and community activist Tito Bradshaw will spend just 20 days in jail after accepting a plea deal.

The woman, 70-year-old Linda Collier Mason, will also spend 100 days on house arrest and 10 years on probation as part of the deal. “I don’t think justice was served for us,” the cyclist’s father, Harry Bradshaw, said after the plea was announced.

A Texas man fulfilled the dreams of many last weekend when he called Gov. Greg Abbott a douchebag to his face outside of a Dallas restaurant. The clip of the man insulting Abbott for signing a near-total ban on abortions last month went viral — quickly racking up more than 6 million views on TikTok and hundreds of thousands more on Twitter. — Abe Asher

Ducking the Blame with State Sen. Bryan Hughes Assclown Alert is a column of opinion, analysis and snark.

Last week, NBC News shared audio of an administrator with Carrol ISD in North Texas recommending that teachers who instruct from books about the Holocaust also include views from an “opposing” perspective.

“How do you oppose the Holocaust?” one teacher asked on the recording. It’s a response no doubt shared by many who watched or read the NBC story.

That conversation was happening in response to a new GOP-backed Texas law that limits how public school teachers can talk about issues of race in the classroom. Educators warn the vague nature of the law outlawing the teaching “critical race theory” is generating similar confusion in schools around the state.

State Sen. Bryan Hughes, the East Texas Republican who wrote Senate Bill 3, a more streamlined version of the “critical race theory” ban, defended the legislation, telling NBC News it doesn’t require teachers to air “opposing” views about the Holocaust.

“That’s not what the bill says,” Hughes said.

“I’m glad we can have this discussion to help elucidate what the bill says, because that’s not what the bill says.”

It may not be what the bills say, but educators and Democratic lawmakers warned that this kind of chaos was its inevitable outcome.

The U.S. Department of Justice last week opened an investigation into potential sexual and physical abuse at the Texas Juvenile Justice Department’s (TJJD) five lockup facilities. More than 700 teenage children are detained in the facilities, which have long been the subject of abuse and harassment complaints. The investigation comes just days after TJJD reported the arrest of a former officer accused of inappropriate sexual activity with a person in custody.

State Rep. Lyle Larson, a moderate in the increasingly far right-leaning Texas GOP, last week said he won’t seek re-election. Larson, who represents a district that spans north of San Antonio, was first elected to the Texas House in 2010. This year, he broke with his party on legislation restricting voting rights and banning so-called critical race theory, tweeting in September that “Texas leadership has taken us back 100 years in just 8 months.”

“When this bill passed legislators warned that racist attacks would occur,” state Sen. José Menéndez, D-San Antonio, wrote a letter Thursday to the Texas Education Agency, the Texas Tribune reports. “It is our job to take every step possible to ensure an open and diverse forum, without subjecting our children to racism and hateful rhetoric.”

Or as Paul Tapp, an attorney with the Association of Texas Professional Educators, told the Tribune, “As soon as I read the bills, I expected that this would be the result of it, and I don’t think we’ve heard the last of it.”

Hughes — who also authored Texas’ sixweek abortion ban and its bill restricting poll access — has established himself as a lawmaker more interested in scoring partisan points and throwing bombs than in serving the real needs of Texans.

His claim that the Carroll incident will “help elucidate” what the bill is the rhetoric of a true assclown. It’s a pretense that he and other backers of the bill weren’t cautioned repeatedly about the dark outcomes it would create. — Sanford Nowlin

A study by Austin-based economist Angelos Angelou found that Texans would be forced to pay up to $250 million per investigation should the state legislature pass a law making it easier for political parties to demand election audits following Republicans’ false claim that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from Donald Trump. Separate bills in the Texas Senate and House would dictate that counties where election probes take place would be responsible for financing those probes. — Abe Asher

aul discovered Delta-8 when he went to his regular CBD shop for a vape pen refill.

The store was out of the 35-year-old San Antonio sales rep’s regular order, so after using his smartphone to look up the Delta-8 offered to him by the shop as an alternative, he decided to give it a try.

Two pulls on the pre-loaded vape pen did the trick, and the THC derived from hemp became part of his regular regimen.

CBD provided Paul some relief from pain stemming from injuries he suffered while a passenger in a rideshare car T-boned by a truck. But Delta-8 has proved even more effective — and more readily available — than the controlled substance of Delta-9 THC, found in marijuana.

Paul’s wife uses combinations of Delta-8, Delta-9 and Delta-10, another molecularly similar substance, to alleviate symptoms of her own chronic medical conditions. The mind-calming effects of the still-legal

Delta-8, which some call “legal weed,” is weaker that conventional cannabis. Even so, it’s so close to Delta-9 that both the safe aspects of its use and pitfalls are assumed to be similar. Leading researchers in the field, however, say they know too little about Delta-8 and other THC variations because they can’t legally study them the way they can the effects of marijuana.

“Delta-8 and Delta-9 are really similar from a chemical perspective. It is difficult to tell the difference even with a mass spectrometer,” said Daniele Piomelli, director of the Institute for the Study of Cannabis and professor of anatomy and neurobiology at the medical school of University of California, Irvine.

Researchers know that Delta-8, one of about 140 compounds similar to the THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, found in cannabis, targets the same cannabinoid receptor in the brain that provides intoxication

as a psychoactive compound and relief from nausea.

But most of what is known beyond that is anecdotal or guessed at based on studies of marijuana, Piomelli said.

“It’s not really a processed product,” said Brett Ginsburg, a professor of pharmacology and substance abuse at the University of Texas at San Antonio’s Long School of Medicine. “It’s just a natural product extracted from the hemp plant.”

Because it’s legal for now, Delta-8 could merely be a product of the moment, Ginsberg said. That is, until it’s regulated, and another takes its place.

“It’s a business and people seek out [THC-based products] for a reason,” Ginsberg said. “You’re always chasing the next product.”

Piomelli said he wants to do clinical studies comparing the effects of Delta-8 versus Delta-9, first on animals and then on humans. However, under a quirk of federal law, conducting that research would cause the loss of his license with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency to use legally acquire Delta-9 for study.

“The legal landscape is so weird that it makes it hard to study,” he said.

That means there are many unknowns and no clear science to decide on how to create reasonable regulations around Delta-8 or other THC forms. Building the same knowledge base for Delta-8 as for marijuana “would take 500 papers published, and that’s millions and millions of dollars in research,” Piomelli added.

Lower THC levels What’s known anecdotally is that Delta-8 has similar properties to Delta-9, including improving sleep quality for some people. Additionally, the substance can help with nausea and has a mildly intoxicating effect.

THC from hemp is 0.3%, while marijuana THC used in clinical studies is 3%. Commercially grown cannabis for sale on the market in states where it is legal can be up to 20% THC, Piomelli said.

Although Delta-8 THC concentrations are considerably lower, using more means ramping up the intoxicating effects to those similar to Delta-9.

“Someone who seeks a high [from Delta-8] will get it,” Piomelli said. That could come from more pulls on a vape pen or ingesting more of the substance in the form of edibles.

Positives and negatives Paul, who uses small amounts of Delta-8 as part of his sleep regimen, said he recently had a Delta-8 edible in the form of a treat made with chocolate-flavored cereal. He was surprised that the amount of THC in the homemade goodies was enough to keep him feeling high for two days.

If some of the positive attributes of Delta-9 are mirrored in the Delta-8 — help with post-traumatic stress, improved appetite for those undergoing cancer treatments and better sleep for those with chronic pain, for example — the same could be true of negative effects in some people.

Frequent, acute use of THC in adults has been shown to cause some people to have a loss of coordination, temporary loss of short-term memory and slower response times, Piomelli said. In teenagers, whose brains are still developing, acute use can increase risk of psychosis including schizophrenia, a condition most people don’t know they are predisposed to until its onset, he added.

Pregnant women also should err on the side of caution and not use Delta-9 or Delta-8 regularly, according to the researcher.

UTSA’s Ginsburg said great care should be taken with knowing the amounts and THC strengths used in products to avoid unintended consequences.

Edibles, unless labeled with the specific data, can be an unpleasant unknown. “Once you eat them, you’re stuck with them.”

“There is a problem of abuse liability with any kind of psychoactive substance,” Ginsburg said. “Vulnerable people shouldn’t assume [Delta-8] is an end around.”

Delta-8 retailers and users struggle through an uncertain regulatory environment

elta-8 products aren’t hard to track down in San Antonio. As their popularity built over recent months, they’ve made the jump from CBD and vape shops to the glass cases at convenience stores and gas stations.

Just the same, legal experts warn that the substance, which includes limited amounts of THC, isn’t so much legal in Texas as it is operating in an unregulated space.

Texas recently expanded its limited medical cannabis program to include people with PTSD and all cancer patients, but outside of that, pot is still illegal in the state. Delta-8, however, is derived from the hemp plant, which was made legal through the federal Farm Bill of 2018.

Local retailers who carry Delta-8 say they’re aiding customers who seek it as a remedy for conditions such as chronic pain and sleeplessness. Although the THC in the cannabinoid does offer a “high,” it’s not as psychoactive as the Delta-9 found in marijuana, and few people are seeking it for recreational purposes, they add.

Danielle Cunningham, the owner of Mr. Farmacist, a San Antonio shop specializing in CBD and kratom, a plant derivative used for pain management, began to carry a limited number of Delta-8 products after she tried them and saw their value.

“I have a wounded veteran with stage 4 cancer who buys it from me so he can still function,” she said. “It would be great if we could just get [Delta-8] in front of the V.A.”

Regulatory maneuvers But Cunningham is also wary about stocking too much Delta-8 in event Texas moves to ban or severely limit its sale.

She already took a financial hit when state regulators banned smokable hemp products, forcing her to give away her stock of those items.

A court case has since reined in the state’s ban — smokable hemp products can now be sold here, just not manufactured inside the state. Still, “the whole thing wasn’t very nice to my pocket,” Cunningham added.

Earlier this year, the Texas Senate added an amendment to outlaw or drastically limit sales of Delta-8 to a marijuana reform proposal from the Texas House. Under the amendment, cannabinoids with more than 0.3% THC would be illegal. The amended bill, however, failed to pass.

Even so, the Department of State Health Services testified before the Lege that it considers Delta-8 an illegal substance.

While DSHS has no enforcement capabilities, the testimony sends a signal that the state may not be done looking to curb sales of Delta-8.

Childs said his shop tries to stick to Delta-8 products from larger companies that conduct lab tests and can provide data on the items’ potency and quality. While he’s against banning access to the compound, he said he’s not opposed to government oversight.

“Like anything you consume, it should probably be regulated,” he said.

Evidence-based answers The good news for Delta-8 users is that the Texas Legislature was too consumed with the redistricting process to debate new hemp restrictions before its last session ended.

What’s more, the next regular session won’t take place for another two years.

For now, people seeking medical relief, relaxation or a mild high from Delta-8 can continue to find it widely available. But limitations on scientists’ ability to research the substance signal suggest it will continue to be surrounded by uncertainty.

“We need scientists to work with government to have common-sense regulations” for research and usage of various forms of THC, said Daniele Piomelli, director of the Institute for the Study of Cannabis and professor of anatomy and neurobiology at the medical school of University of California, Irvine.

There are 140 compounds similar to THC, according to the researcher. As one is outlawed, it could be replaced with another. Meanwhile, both consumers and retailers will be left on their own to figure out the safety and efficacy of those products.

“By the time it gets to the Supreme Court [of the United States], somebody will have made a lot of money,” Piomelli said. “Without meaningful regulation, this will go on for decades. And we can’t do the research to give an evidence-based answer.”

Growing local interest In San Antonio, interest in Delta-8 began to percolate around the end of last year, and it’s only built up since then, said Delton Childs, manager of Supernova Smoke Shop’s location on Perrin-Beitel Road.

Most of Childs’ customers who sought CBC products to deal with chronic pain and other maladies have since migrated over to the new compound.

“It’s mainly CBD people using it,” he said. “Pretty much Sanford Nowlin

Study: new bills in the Texas Lege could cost taxpayers millions to pay for partisan election probes

exas taxpayers would be forced to pay up to $250 million per investigation if the state legislature passes pending legislation to lower the bar for political parties to demand election audits, a new economic study shows.

Separate Republican-backed bills pending in the Texas House and Senate would enable partisan probes of both the 2020 election and future political contests. As written, taxpayers in the counties where the probes take place would be required to pick up the tab.

For a simple review in a small county, taxpayers would be on the hook for a minimum of $35,000, according to the new analysis by Austin-based AngelouEconomics. On the upper end, a detailed statewide investigation would cost taxpayers up to $250 million.

“With costs as high as $250 million for a statewide investigation, partisan election reviews come at high costs both directly and indirectly to Texas taxpayers,” said Angelos Angelou, CEO and chief strategist of AngelouEconomics. “This could result in a costly

expenditure for taxpayers that would also erode their representation and voice in government.”

AngelouEconomics’ study was commissioned by voting-rights group Secure Democracy.

Now under debate, Texas’ Senate Bill 47 and House Bill 16 would make it easier for political parties to order up investigations of poll results already verified by local elections officials.

Both echo former President Donald Trump’s repeated lies that the 2020 election was marred by widespread fraud.

Trump has used his stranglehold on the GOP to demand costly partisan probes from state officials. Last month, at Trump’s behest, Texas — under Republican Gov. Greg Abbott — initiated such a probe of the 2020 election results in four of its most-populous counties.

ing-rights groups warn that SB 47 and HB 16 would weaken Texas voters’ trust in elections and ratchet up partisan rancor. Meanwhile, the proposals duplicate existing rules that already safeguard the process, they argue.

“The 2020 election in Texas was smooth and secure, a testament to the professionalism of local election officials across the state,” said Sarah Walker, Secure Democracy’s executive director. “We don’t need a costly relitigation of the 2020 elections or open up future elections to frivolous partisan investigations that would undermine voters’ trust in the democratic system and saddle Texas taxpayers with a multi-million dollar bill.”

HOTEL IMPERIAL After her successful career in the silent and golden film eras of Hollywood, Polish stage and screen star Pola Negri settled down in San Antonio in 1957 where she lived the remainder of her life. When she died in 1987 at the age of 90, she left most of her estate to St. Mary’s University. Best known for her femme fatale roles, Negri played against character in the 1927 silent war drama Hotel Imperial. In the film, she plays Anna Sedlak, a Russian chambermaid who hides a trapped Austrian lieutenant (James Hall) in her hotel during World War I. Before the screening of Hotel Imperial, Bernadette Hamilton-Brady, an associate professor of drama at St. Mary’s, will hold a conversation about Negri’s life and the impact her career had on Hollywood. Hamilton-Brady began researching Negri in the late ’90s, and in 2003, the prof wrote and starred in a one-woman production called His Polita. A 1924 portrait of Negri is currently on exhibit at the San Antonio Museum of Art. The piece was painted by artist Tadé Styka and is a part of the museum’s permanent collection. That exhibition, “40 Years, 40 Stories” will run through Jan. 2. The screening will take place outdoor in the museum’s West Courtyard, weather permitting. fit he first listened to — Tupac? Biggie? N.W.A.? — but he can pinpoint the moment he became captivated by the genre. We’ll get to details on that a little later.

Fittingly, that beloved genre is subject the New York Times bestselling author and San Antonio native chose to write about as he ends one chapter of his literary career.

Serrano’s newest book, Hip-Hop (And Other Things), hits the market October 26. It’s the third book of a trilogy that started with the bestsellers Basketball (And Other Things) in 2017 and Movies (And Other Things) in 2019. In Hip-Hop, Serrano ruminates on anything from Missy Elliot’s 1997 debut studio album Supa Dupa Fly to the genre’s most perfect duos.

During his recent Current interview, Serrano talked about how his love for hip-hop started and which rappers he wanted to dress like as a kid. He also shared thoughts on his favorite rap albums of all time, the popularity of reggaeton and which rapper he hopes reads what he wrote about her in the book.

What’s your earliest memory as a kid listening to hip-hop?

I don’t remember the very first time that I heard rap, but I do remember the very first time I was in complete awe of it. I think everyone who likes rap has that moment. My moment was during Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze when Vanilla Ice showed up … and did that fucking rap song. It was like all the things I cared the most about happening all at once. A similar thing happened when MC Hammer did an Addams Family song (“Addams Groove”).

I just thought it was the coolest thing in the world.

I really like when different segments of pop culture fold over onto themselves.

Yeah, when you’re 10 years old, those kinds of things make an impact on you.

Before the (And Other Things) trilogy, you wrote The Rap Year Book in 2015. Was it an easy decision to revisit rap for the third book?

uring the early ’90s, Shea Serrano searched for a genre of music that could satisfy his pre-teen predilections.

At the time, his father was listening to a lot of classic rock, Tejano including La Tropa F and regional Mexican music such as Chalino Sánchez.

His mother, originally from Michigan, was playing Motown around the house. Serrano had no problem with songs like “I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey

“When you’re a kid, this thing happens where you want to separate yourself from whatever your parents are doing,” Serrano, 40, told the Current. “When I was becoming a teenager, I wanted to find music that I cared about. This was all coinciding around the time when rap was becoming a proper genre.”

Oh, yeah. When we talked about doing a trilogy, I knew I wanted to end it with rap because it’s one of my favorite things to write about. There was no debate about it at all. When we signed the contract for the book deal, they didn’t even ask us what we were doing for the [third book]. They sort of told us we could do whatever we wanted for the third one.

What resonates with you about hip-hop more than any other music genre?

Once you start listening to it and reading the lyrics, it’s so interesting how [rappers] can tell you an entire story in very few words. As a writer, I can say that is impressive. I can’t do that. The book is something like 90,000 words and [a rapper] could probably tell you everything that’s in the book in three minutes.

Besides the music, what else did you adopt from the hip-hop culture growing up? Did you wear fat shoelaces?

I wanted to do everything I saw on TV. At the very beginning, I wanted to break dance. We would watch Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo, and we’d want to be like Turbo and Ozone and fucking breakdance too. Whatever the coolest people were wearing, that’s what we wanted to wear. I know there was definitely a period where I was trying to dress like Da Brat. Then when Kris Kross popped up, I wanted to wear my shit backwards too.

While you were writing the new book, did you have a sense of which chapters might create the most conversation because you were sharing an opinion that might be polarizing amongst fans?

Not really, because whenever I’m writing about something, I’m always writing in favor or in support of it. I do that without saying things are bad. Occasionally, it’ll happen where I’ll go, “This is Jay-Z’s best album” and somebody will disagree, but I’m never like, “This is Jay-Z’s worst album.” That sort of thing usually draws more conversation around it. I spent a big portion of my career as a music critic, but if an album came out that I didn’t like, I just didn’t write about it.

If you write something about an album or an artist, you’ll have to spend several days of your life researching and absorbing. I figured early on that it wasn’t going to make me very happy if I had to do that with stuff I didn’t like.

Which of the rappers you write about would you hope might read the chapter you dedicated to them?

I would like Missy Elliot to read her chapter.

That’s my favorite chapter in the book. She’s one of my five favorite rappers ever and [Supa Dupa Fly] is one of my five favorite albums ever. She was a very important figure in teenage Shea’s life. You need people like that in your life when you’re falling in love with a thing. It would be crazy to me if she read her chapter and said something about it.

Since you mentioned one of your five favorite albums, can you name another four to round out the list?

What’s your take on the rise of reggaeton over the past few years? Do you think that variation on rap music has staying power?

I don’t have that list available at this particular moment. I would need a solid three weeks to cut a list of 19 down to five. Well, there are three that are definitely in there, 100% certain – [Missy’s], UGK’s Ridin’ Dirty and DMX’s It’s Dark and Hell Is Hot.

Do you listen to hip-hop differently today than you did when you were younger? Are you still bassing out in your car?

(Laughs.) I definitely listen to more of it in my car than I did growing up, but only because I didn’t have a car in high school. Mainly, I would listen to it in my room on the radio.

Absolutely. It’s only gotten bigger. This version now is not like the version in the 2000s when “Gasolina” came out and everyone said, “This is the best thing in the world,” and then immediately after, no one listened to it anymore. [Rappers] like J Balvin and Bad Bunny are like the most popular ones on Spotify. It’s so much fun to listen to and learn about. It’s a whole new world.

Why did you decide to end the (And Other Things) series at three? What are you working on next?

I have no idea what comes next. It just seemed like a fun idea to do a trilogy. We could do

Three just felt like a good number. Hopefully, this new one will make the bestseller list, too.

You, of course, are a big Spurs fan. Can you give me your prediction on how far the team will go this season?

The Vegas line has the Spurs winning like 28 or 29 games. It’s terrifying to look at. I’m going to be ambitious and say we’re going to win 41 games, and then maybe we sneak into the playoffs. I just want to sneak in there and cause a little bit of trouble.

Blurring Boundaries Keri Miki-Lani Schroeder pushes books into conceptual territory with Coyote Bones Press

hile exploring a Nevada ghost town in 2014, Las Vegas native Keri Miki-Lani Schroeder stumbled upon something ominous: a coyote skeleton decaying in a rusty barrel. That discovery struck a chord.

“You’d see coyotes all around Nevada and even in the city of Las Vegas,” Schroeder recalled. “I remember seeing them at the drive-in movie theater eating spilled popcorn and hotdogs off the ground.”

Beyond the haunting visual she encountered, the words it evoked circled in Schroeder’s head and inspired the name Coyote Bones Press, the niche imprint she founded the following year.

As a teen, Schroeder found creative inspiration in punk culture and made her own zines. However, she didn’t start taking fine art seriously until she transferred out of high school into a magnet program at the Las Vegas Academy for the Arts.

“It pretty much changed my life, because it was run more like college,” she said. “I think that’s where my interest in books started really.”

As an art history major at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Schroeder continued making zines and started branching out into what she now cate-

gorizes as “really bad” bookbinding.

“I couldn’t find anybody to teach me in Vegas,” she said.

That changed when she met book and paper conservator Michael Frazier and enrolled in one of his weekend workshops at UNLV. “He really introduced me to book art,” Schroeder said, “and that was really exciting.”

One of the first established book artists Schroeder became aware of was Julie Chen, who founded Flying Fish Press in 1987 and teaches courses in the creative practice at Mills College in Oakland, California.

Upon graduating from UNLV, Schroeder started saving money for grad school, with Mills College being her

first choice.

“There aren’t too many places with graduate level book art programs,” she said. “I liked [Mills] because it really emphasized the conceptual art component and not just the craft of it. And I wanted to study with Julie Chen.”

In the process of earning her master’s in book art and creative writing, Schroeder became Chen’s teaching assistant, then took a job doing production work at Flying Fish Press. “[Chen] does limited-edition artists books with runs of 25 t0 100 [copies].

Because it’s such a small studio, we did them in batches. My job was to assemble things as orders came in — and that’s how I run my studio as well.”

After four years working alongside Chen in California, Schroeder set her

sights on Texas, inspired in part by an opportunity to work with Craig Jensen, a master bookbinder and conservator who worked at the Library of Congress before founding the bygone Austin institution BookLab. A San Antonio resident since the summer of 2018, Schroeder spent roughly two years working with Jensen at his San Marcos-based workshop BookLab II. When she’s not creating original projects for her Coyote Bones Press, Schroeder teaches in-person classes and virtual workshops — at the Southwest School of Art, Austin Book Arts Center, the Minnesota Center for Book Arts and the Jaffe Center for Book Art in Boca Raton, Florida.

In her work, Schroeder frequently touches on environmental themes while pushing books into conceptual territory involving meticulously handmade boxes, found objects, unusual printing techniques and wry nods to games and magic tricks. Her creations have been featured in exhibitions across the U.S. and are held in numerous permanent collections — from Stanford University and the Rhode Island School of Design to the British Library in London, England.

We selected five of Schroeder’s intriguing contributions to the world of book art.

poignant ode to the dusky seaside sparrow, which became extinct in 1987 due to the loss of its marshy habitat on Florida’s east coast. Combining photographs, illustrations, a sculpted paper bird and two sound recordings, the mixed-media project conceptualizes a heartbreaking story involving the Kennedy Space Center, an aggressive mosquito control program and Walt Disney World’s now-defunct wildlife park Discovery Island, where the last dusky seaside sparrow perished in captivity.

Rendered in a “rolling box structure” of linked compartments, Schroeder’s 2015 book Reliquary poetically pairs detritus she collected in the Mojave Desert — shotgun casings, cigarette butts, rusty nails and bottle caps — with “text centered around loss, memory and decay.” Adding intrigue to the unfolding array of specimens are symbolic foil stamps that reference the hieroglyphs of the “hobo code.” One of the letterpress-printed passages asks, “How long before these pieces of you become just ancient artifacts, removed from context, relics of a forgotten life in a desert landscape?”

Closely tied to Unremarkable. Elusive, Schroeder’s 2020 project Consume employs an accordion book format and reverent pen-and-ink drawings to memorialize five birds hunted to extinction: the passenger pigeon, heath hen, Hawaiian O’o, great auk and Carolina parakeet. Thoughtfully, Schroeder placed each bird on a bed of flowers native to its habitat. Published as an edition of only five, Consume includes one of the original drawings Schroeder created for the book — and an actual duck wing tucked into a coffin-like compartment.

Magic Box of Mysteries

Perhaps more of a teaching tool than an art book, this playful project illustrates Schroeder’s interest in nostalgic games and magic tricks. Housed in a “magic wallet” box — and viewable on the Coyote Bones Press YouTube channel — it reveals different optical paper toys depending on which way it’s opened: a

Book of Hours

An ambitious collaboration between Schroeder and her mentor Julie Chen, Book of Hours is a fascinating exploration of time and space amid the new normal.

Representing a year and a half of Zoom meetings, the book comprises 12 individual sequences that creatively address the pandemic era — from masked portraits to artfully layered COVID headlines to experiments that might only occur in lockdown. Housed in a handsome red box featuring a symbolic cone motif, Book of Hours follows the format of a “blow book,” better known as a “magic coloring book.” Dating back at least as far as the 16th century, the trick allows a magician to seemingly alter the book’s contents depending on how they flip through it. Traditionally, colored pages become uncolored after a member of the audience blows on the book. “We do have instructions on the colophon of the box,” Schroeder said.

“But I’ve noticed that the people — especially artists — will say, ‘Don’t tell me!’ They want to figure it out themselves.”

Actor and San Antonio native Nicholas Gonzalez goes on wild ride as Air Force pilot in La Brea

n the new NBC series La Brea, one of the characters’ key motivations is to not be eaten.

Giant sloths, saber-toothed tigers and short-faced bears are only a few of the life-threatening challenges they face in the premiere season of the fantasy drama.

The show follows a group of people in Los Angeles who are transported to a dangerous, prehistoric land after they fall into a massive sinkhole. San Antonio native Nicholas Gonzalez plays Capt. Levi Delgado, a U.S. Air Force pilot tasked to fly a specialized aircraft into the pit to rescue survivors.

During an interview with the Current, Gonzalez, 45, talked about shooting a series during the pandemic. The Central Catholic High School graduate also touched on landing a role not specifically written for a Latino actor.

New episodes of La Brea air every Tuesday at 8 p.m. Central on NBC.

What attracted you to a project like La Brea?

You can’t help but be caught up in this fantasy world. We’ve seen these sinkholes happen [in real life], and it’s scary. All these cars and buildings and sometimes people fall in. You wonder, “Where does it all lead?” This show is a wild ride about one possibility. I think the world needs an escape like that right now.

What was your experience shooting a TV show about a disaster during a real-life crisis like the pandemic?

It was pretty cathartic. It really informed a lot of what was going on. It was a really difficult shoot. We were all away from our families.

We were out in the elements. But we all came together as a cast and got to know each other very well. I can genuinely say that I love every one of these people.

One of those people is actor Jon Seda, who I’m sure you’ve run into in this industry before.

It’s funny because we’ve always been up for the same roles, so you’re never going to see us both in the same project. Here, we’re working together. He could not be a more amazing person. We all probably agree that he has

been the saint of the show.

If you were a producer listening to the elevator pitch for La Brea, would you be sold or would you think it was too over the top?

(Movie trailer voice) In a world where a family is torn apart … (Normal voice) I think the show is about what happens when everything is taken away and people must learn how to survive. Then, there’s everyone else [like my character] who has the technology and must try to bridge this unbridgeable gap. What do we do? We send in Levi Delgado. There is so much more mystery on top of that. The show refuses to be defined.

Your character’s name was originally Levi Brooks. I’m assuming the role wasn’t written specifically for a Latino actor and that your casting was the catalyst for the name change, yes?

Yes, he was originally Levi Brooks but what often happens is that they have an idea going in about who this character is going to be, and sometimes that idea gets shattered.

There are a lot of examples [in this industry] of whitewashing, but this is an example of that not happening. I’m proud that he’s now Levi Delgado. I’m proud that that’s another aspect of him that we get to show.

Is it also safe to assume that 20 years ago, a Latino actor wouldn’t have been called in to audition for a character named Levi

Brooks?

Yes, I was often told, “They’re going white with that role.” Then, me and an African American actor and an Asian actor would have to fight for this one role that they’d leave open [for a minority character]. With the advent of diversity, we’re all pushing for representation. It’s about people and singular experiences. While we love being universal as humans, I think we realize that the more specific a story gets, the more universal they become.

Since this show is about a natural disaster, can you tell me about the first time you experienced an earthquake in Los Angeles?

It was around 2001. I was in bed, and I thought my dog jumped on it and made it shake. Then, I remembered my dog was back in San Antonio. [Earthquakes] never bothered me before. They’re just something you get being in California. But I’m a dad now, so I think about what I put in [my daughter’s] room. I don’t put anything over the bed that could fall.

How do you think Levi would do in a dogfight with Maverick from Top Gun?

Well, Tom [Cruise] is a little bit older now, and Levi is the best of the best. He’s a test pilot, so he’s seen planes that Maverick hasn’t even dreamed of before. So, I don’t even think it would be a battle.

Generational Change

San Antonio-raised actress Nava Mau’s TV show Genera+ion has ended, but its impact remains

he HBO Max series Genera+ion, often touted as the queerest show on cable, won’t be returning for a second season.

Just the same, the show and its cast — including San Antonio-raised actress Nava Mau, who’s transgender — broke new ground for LGBTQ+ and Latinx media representation.

“We are very much still in the new dawn of trans representation in film and television,” said Mau, who portrayed Ana, the transgender aunt of the show’s teen character Greta. “In order to break into and stay in this industry, it requires a lot of patience, resilience and support.”

Genera+ion, which focused on teens discovering their sexualities in Orange County, California, was the first scripted HBO Max series not to be renewed.

The streaming service announced the cancellation last month despite fans using the hashtag #RenewGeneration to call for another season.

Although Genera+ion was shortlived, creator Zelda Barnz said she’s

happy the show found an audience.

“I’m grateful we got to make this show at all, because there was a great deal of uncertainty in even pitching a show about queer teenagers in such a specific setting,” Barnz told Entertainment Weekly.

Mau was born in Mexico City, and her family immigrated to the U.S., settling in San Antonio when she was a child. Later, she relocated to Oakland, California. Describing her younger self as an “evidently queer and gender non-conforming,” she learned to expect being treated differently by people other than close family and friends.

In Genera+ion, Mau’s Ana becomes Greta’s guardian after her mother is deported to Mexico. The actress describes Ana as a “firecracker,” unafraid to express her opinions, and those opinions come into play as Greta tries to figure out her sexuality and falls for another girl.

“I think their relationship is so special because the relationship allows both of them to be free and pushes them to be better,” Mau said. “For

Ana, she’s getting to see generational change, because Ana lived through a different time in terms of what it meant to be queer and Latinx and be in a family of immigrants.”

Mau said she’s seen an improvement in the portrayal of racial minorities within the LGBTQ+ community from a decade ago. Back then, such characters were often used as a “punching bag” or a source of tragedy in TV shows and movies.

“I sometimes feel like I still have to pinch myself, because I can’t quite believe we have seen so much change happen in such a short amount of time,” Mau said. “I do feel a pretty heavy sense of responsibility to make sure we’re all doing our best to make those representations feel like they are doing a service, as opposed to doing a disservice.”

In addition to acting, Mau has directed, produced and written independent short films such as 2019’s Walking Hour. After Genera+ion wrapped filming, Mau began production on another short, titled Work, which will premiere next year in film festivals.

The new short revolves around a queer Latina trying to find herself after a breakup while returning to work at an “underground lap-dance party.”

Additionally, Mau directed an episode of the short-form web series Hidden Canyons.

“My original goal was to study televi-

sion writing and try to become a show runner. That led me to make a short film, and I ended up writing, directing, producing and starring in that short film,” Mau said. “I had to just take a chance and try it and believe in myself, so I haven’t stopped since then.”

During her upbringing, Mau pursued acting through school and community theater. However, it wasn’t until later that she realized it could be more than an avocation.

“I have always gravitated towards acting, but I never considered it a possible profession for myself,” Mau said. “It really was not until I was an adult that I was able to even consider the possibility of pursuing acting and filmmaking as a career.”

Prior to her immersion in the entertainment industry, Mau earned a living in the nonprofit world. For years, she worked with violence survivors as a peer counselor at San Francisco’s Community United Against Violence.

Celebrating Texas Wine Month? Build a locally sourced charcuterie board to go with the vino.

ith October’s Texas Wine Month in full swing, your body will thank you for choosing not to explore the Lone Star State’s many offerings on an empty stomach.

Whether you’re planning a fullfledged party or a simple date night to facilitate your investigation of Texas-produced vino, a charcuterie board provides the perfect foil.

Charcuterie is, of course, the art of preparing meat products such as salami, ham, sausage, terrines, pâtés and confit. Together with rich cheeses, crispy crostini, lush fruit and what we could just as easily call “other fun stuff” — marmalades, spreads, pickled things, roasted nuts and chocolate, for example — a charcuterie board is the ultimate accompaniment to a wine 32

night.

As we celebrate Texas wines, let’s also celebrate the state’s food producers by breaking down each charcuterie category and looking at where you can find local purveyors of each. That’s right, it’s possible to create a charc board from delicious ingredients found within 100 miles of SA. Check the accompanying text box for addresses and websites for all the vendors.

testa for our spread, reveling in cured meats harvested from sustainably raised animals. The flavor of meat from animals who live their entire lives in native Texas pastures is more complex than those raised on factory farms.

Quite simply, it’s unmatched.

For another approach, indulge in the European-style charcuterie offered by Visca Charcuteria, the state’s first drycured salami facility. In addition to Tuscan-style salami, the Wimberley-based spot produces outstanding chorizo and soppressata, all of which are available at Alamo City meateries Smoke Shack and Coopers Meat Market.

The seven-year-old venture produces five fine-aged cheeses, including one smoked with pecan wood and another made in the style of creamy French blue cheese. All use Texas milk.

If you’re after something with a bit more funk, look to Dos Lunas Artisan Cheese, located south of Austin. Dos Lunas’ cheese is handmade from cow’s

milk that is purportedly ever-changing, depending on the seasons and what kinds of grasses the cows are eating.

Carbo load While some folks have no qualms about taking artisan meats and cheeses straight to the head, others need a carbohydrate-laden vessel. Enter the cracker, crostini, lavash — pick your poison here.

We sourced a few New Orleans French bread hoagies from San Antonio bakery The Bread Box, along with classic water crackers and breadsticks for dipping. Sure, you can buy toasted crostini, but it’s so much more satisfying when you do it yourself, and the fresh-baked hoagies don’t disappoint with a quick toss in olive oil and some toasting in the oven.

Other fun stuff Round out your SA-centric charcuterie with sweet, spicy and savory items from some local spots that might not immediately spring to mind when you think “wine.”

Giardiniera is an Italian relish of pickled vegetables in vinegar or oil — in the Esquire’s case, we munched on crisp cauliflower, red pepper and carrots, pickled with Serrano peppers for a lingering burn.

Then do the Tannat — it’s an ender, not a beginner.

Nurture versus nature For Bending Branch, founded in 2009 by Dr. Robert W. Young and his wife Brenda, the so-called “heart of darkness” grape actually was a beginner, a focus of development for what Young now calls his “Tannat House of Texas.” This isn’t hyperbole on Young’s part either. His Tannats have matured into truly impressive wines since their 2008 introduction.

In their focus on Tannat, and in their experimentation with unique grape varieties, Young and Bradford are in complete accord. Their approach could hardly be more different when it comes to methods of production, though.

Young believes in scientific nurture in addition to nature.

A tour of the Bending Branch facility — there’s also a tasting room in Comfort called Ursa at Branch on High — will reveal imposing pieces of equipment that aren’t there for show. Young was the first to introduce Texas to Cryo-Maceration, in which grapes are briefly frozen to break down cell walls

and release color, tannin and aromatic compounds. Same goes for Thermoflash, which does essentially the same thing but with heat and steam.

Some credit the winery’s string of awards at prestigious competitions at least partially to the techniques.

But grape source also matters. Bending Branch grows of its fruit in vineyards surrounding the winery and also has another operation in California.

However, its partnerships with growers in the Hill Country, High Plains and West Texas help it complete a portfolio that includes Petite Syrah, Malbec, Mourvèdre and Souzao among the reds and Picpoul Blanc, a new Texas favorite, among the whites.

One of the oldest and best-regarded of those growers is Newsome Vineyards, established in 1986, which now encompasses 148 acres at a 3,700-foot elevation near the New Mexico line.

Starting with Cabernet Sauvignon, as did most Texas growers and winemakers, Newsome now cultivates 19 grape varieties and serves 12 Texas wineries.

By helping define a sense of place, they, too, are driving the future of Texas wines.

‘Riot People’

Brooklyn post-punkers Gustaf are happy to be on the road and hitting San Antonio with Idles

ife is good for Brooklyn-based postpunk outfit Gustaf.

The band released its debut Audio Drag for Ego Slobs earlier this year, and it’s in the middle of a nationwide tour with Britain’s noisy, scathing and critically lauded Idles. The joint trek stops at San Antonio’s Paper Tiger for a sold-out show on Wednesday, Oct. 27.

Gustaf’s Alamo City debut has been a long time coming. A planned March 2020 gig that would have coincided with Austin’s SXSW was cancelled as the COVID-19 pandemic took hold. What is the band looking forward to for its SA debut?

Tacos came as the unanimous response on a Zoom call with the band during a break in its jam-packed tour schedule.

Guitarist Vram Kherlopian elaborated: “I’ve always felt that food is one of the greatest treats of this planet, and we get to go around playing music, meeting nice people and asking for recommendations for great food.

What a joy.”

Food, sure. But what kind of music is the band playing that allows its members to sample said culinary delights? Gustaf’s label, Royal Mountain Records, calls the band “art

punk,” while NME declared the act “danceable NYC post-punk that refuses to take things too seriously.”

So, what’s the deal?

“If I’m in a hotel lobby, I say we play artsy post-punk, you know, Talking Heads or Pixies,” lead vocalist Lydia Gammill said. “The deeper-cuts reference would be ESG. People who come to our shows say B-52s, which is great because they’re an amazing band.”

Gustaf’s members also cited the vocals of Laurie Anderson as a key influence.

While listeners have invoked comparisons between the band and classic riot grrrl sounds, percussionist and vocalist Tarra Thiessen said that’s not entirely accurate.

Even if it might have been the case for some of the band members’ previous ensembles.

“We’ve been influenced by riot grrrl [in past bands], but I don’t really feel that with this project. We’ve grown from riot grrrls to riot women,” she said, before laughing and correcting herself. “Riot people.”

Gustaf is happy to be on the road with Idles, currently on a winning streak itself.

After racking up plenty of accolades since dropping its debut album in 2017, some critics have trumpeted the British band’s most

recent long player Ultra Mono as the best of its career.

“We’re two different, very distinctive bands,” vocalist Gammill said. “I always like playing shows where it’s a mixed curation, because there’s a lot of overarching themes and expressions that can link genres together. Promoters always think people want to see three versions of the same band, but my favorite shows we’ve played have a whole range of genres.”

Like many music fans, the members of Gustaf are ecstatic that — at least for now — live music is back from the dead. Even if it means they’re forced to shake off a few cobwebs.

“We’re getting used to being on tour again since we all got domesticated in our own little ways,” drummer Melissa Lucciola said.

“We’re learning how to be on tour again, how to do rock ’n’ roll again.”

Despite a recent wave of proclamations that rock music has run its course, Lucciola feels optimistic about the future of the genre — especially when it comes to the energy that comes with live performances.

“It seemed like for a minute it was, ‘Oh no, it’s got a guitar, no one wants to see it,’” she said. “But I believe everything pendulums back and forth. Everything goes super-electronic, but then people are excited to see people playing instruments again. There’s such a release when you get to hit a drum, do some crazy guitar thing or scream.”

Sunday, October 31 Reverend Payton’s Big Damn Band Strap on your overalls, pull on your boots and head out for a hoedown. That seems like the best way to take in Reverend Payton’s Big Damn Band’s raucous and fun approach to roots music and rural blues. The Big Damn Band part of the name has more to do with the racket they make than the actual size of the ensemble, however. Monday, Nov. 1 Japanese Breakfast Though ostensibly a band, Japanese Breakfast is a solo project in all but name, cruising under the steadfast direction of singer-guitarist Michelle Zauner. The band has been showered with critical praise — deservedly — for its third LP, Jubilee, released in March. The record mixes alt- and indie-pop with shimmery psychedelia and rich textures. In a sign of her range, Zauner recently composed the Zelda-influenced soundtrack for the indie video game Sable.
