Higher education remains committed to the SAT, but scores tell us more about income than aptitude.

ell, my cousins were right: after your freshman year of college, nobody ever asks you your SAT score. And yet, in San Antonio, families can spend about $75 per hour, or between $1,000 and $2,000, on private tutoring and test prep courses for the four-hour test, said Lara Kilgore, CEO of Beyond Education, a tutoring and mentoring company.

“The SAT and ACT are the biggest obstacles standing between a student and college admission,” Kilgore said. “So parents are willing to do whatever it takes and pay whatever fee they can in order to guarantee their child a more competitive advantage.”

High SAT scores lead to college options, and a degree from a competitive college leads to more options for work. A good job leads to more in general.

The links between income and SAT scores tell us something about achievement in America. In this system, students’ efforts

are magnified by parents’ income, making the highest scores into pricey tickets for admission to exclusive universities. The tests themselves have been shown to favor upper-middle class families with college-educated parents – an overwhelmingly white demographic – and the ferocious competition to get into top colleges is likely to maul any efforts to level the playing field.

More Money, More Points Alamo Heights ISD is a cousin of Dallas’s Highland Park ISD or Austin’s Eanes ISD – a little quainter, but still bears the wealthy family resemblance. The Houston version of Alamo Heights, River Oaks, somehow resisted the urge to form its own school district – they may just send their kids to private school.

how closely SAT scores are tied to income.

And it matters, because many of these kids are competing to get into the University of Texas-Austin, Texas A&M, and Baylor.

Because the SATs offer a broader range of scores than just one through 100, the correlation between income and score can play out more dramatically. Have a look at the data.

If you control for the percentage of students who take the test (lower percentages of test takers raise the average score), most of the scatter plot points hug even closer to the line.

The College Board, the company that produces the SAT, self-reports the income/score correlation as well. Statewide, students with a family income between $20,000 and $40,000 – like most students in San Antonio ISD – had mean test scores around 300 points lower than their peers in the highest income bracket.

Wealthy families typically spend more on test prep, which is another statement that might go without saying, except that they get what they pay for. But before you panic and remortgage your house, just be glad you don’t live in New York City, where at least one notorious tutor charged $1,000 per hour for private SAT test prep. So, congratulate yourself for living in San Antonio – a solid fiscal life choice.

Meritocracy Is Dead

We already knew that standardized test scores are closely tied to family income…right? Teachers certainly know.

Superintendents know. If that’s news to you, I’d like to offer you a few moments to go through the stages of grief, as you realize that dreams of a meritocracy are basically dead.

Denial: “No! This is a meritocracy!

Anyone can succeed, and we all get by on our wits.”

Anger: “Quit making everything about income inequality, you Bolshevik!”

Bargaining: “But, really, maybe it’s just a correlation, not a cause. People with higher income value education more, and they make good life choices, so, of course, their scores are higher!”

Depression: “So what you’re telling me is that I have no free will and that my life outcomes are just determined by my parents’ income.”

The SAT may get us to the last stage – acceptance. The SAT is possibly the most consistent, universal and consequential standardized test most people will take in their educational career, maybe even in their lifetimes. It was first used in 1926, and in 1942 became the universal reference test for college applications. As colleges grew more competitive, so did SAT scores.

“Nearly every parent will tell you that back when they applied to college, taking the SAT was just a checkbox. It didn’t necessarily matter what score you got, you just had to take it,” Kilgore said, “Today, the SAT and ACT can send a 16 year old into an anxiety-filled tailspin, and parents feel ill-equipped to manage the stress because they didn’t live through it.”

So home becomes test-prep central, and everyone is hyperventilating for about two years. But the individual student isn’t the only one being judged on their test score.

SAT scores are also one of the “college readiness” measures by which school districts in Texas are measured.

The state tracks the percentage of students who take the SAT and ACT, and how many of those students score “at criterion,” or college-ready, levels.

For the SAT, that is usually considered to be a least 1,100 and, for the ACT it’s a minimum of 24.

You can guess how that stacks up.

go up together. They go down together. But on tests where private tutors and expensive prep courses are not in play, schools have proven that they can make up the difference. It’s difficult and expensive, but on tests where the impacts of having upper-middle class parents is relatively squishy (such as STAAR or PSAT), it can be done.

What makes the SAT’s difference so stark, and the gaps so pernicious, is the direct activity of parents pouring funds in to test prep. Once that happens, the influence of wealth on test performance skyrockets.

How Much for 200 Points?

Getting test prep into the hands of all students has become a bit of a cause.

The Chan-Zuckerberg Foundation has partnered with the College Board to distribute free test prep material to students and high schools. According to the College Board’s internal research, the SAT practice program offered by Kahn Academy, a free online instructional service, has been shown to boost scores an average of 115 points if students dedicate at least 20 hours to studying.

San Antonio ISD and other low-income districts offers some free SAT prep courses, and so does the city’s Café College downtown.

vendor. Parents pay for it, but it’s less expensive than a private tutor.

College-prep charter networks like IDEA Public Schools double down on test prep, trying to show that rigor and high expectations can close almost any gap. IDEA outscored their economic peers by about 100 points, but IDEA was still well behind the wealthiest districts.

Another college-focused charter, KIPP Texas, uses the free Kahn Academy and Kaplan test prep, but it also focuses more on the ACT than the SAT, said Ruben Rodriguez, director of KIPP Through College for KIPP Texas. He cited studies that show the SAT uses words – in the vocabulary section, reading comprehension passages and word problems in the math section – that are inherently more familiar to middleand upper-income students.

The College Board has responded to some of these concerns. The SAT’s 2017 redesign did away with some of the WTF vocabulary words and reading comprehension passages, and adjusted the scoring to make the test questions more relevant and aligned with what students are taught in high school. In theory, this should also make the test more class-neutral.

Still, the stunning gaps can’t all be attributed to problems with the test itself. The gaps on the College Board’s own PSAT (the SAT practice test) are not as drastic as those on the SAT. There’s still just no substitute for good old-fashioned money and all that it can buy.

“Although most private tutors don’t have a guarantee program like the larger test prep companies such as Kaplan or Princeton Review, they do make near-promises to parents that student’s test score will improve by 200-plus points,” Kilgore said. “And if the student does the work assigned and is diligent, a 200-point improvement for someone who scored in 50-60th percentile is definitely doable.”

So as long as SAT scores remain vital to college admissions, and private tutors keep upping student scores, the competition will only intensify. At this point, Kilgore estimates, around 70 percent of families in affluent schools pay for some sort of private or extracurricular test prep.

She has a solution for lower-income families, though.

Can’t Beat ’Em? Join ’Em (If They’ll Let You) Kilgore is reaching out to companies like Whataburger, Bill Miller and H-E-B to see if they would consider offering tutoring and SAT prep courses as a benefit to the children of employees – all employees, not just the c-suites who can already afford it.

It’s not an entirely novel idea. Companies such as Intel Corp. in California have begun to offer private tutoring benefits to employees so that their kids can get homework help while the parents are still at work.

Of course, if competition intensifies – if Kilgore’s plan works and college prep charters like IDEA and KIPP keep raising scores – then what?

We know what. We have not yet found the limit on the price professional parents are willing to pay to help their kids gain an edge. That fact makes me uncomfortable, because I’m one of them, and the pressure is overwhelming.

As the glut of bought-and-paid-for test scores clogs college admissions pipelines, some universities are broadening their admissions criteria, but we are a long way from total abandonment of the standardized test, and the economic advantages that go with them.

And that’s what we have to accept.

We have to grieve the death of our meritocratic dreams. But, of course, acceptance isn’t the ultimate goal. The ultimate goal is change. We can come up with a more fair system, but first we have to want to. sacurrent.com | October 24-30, 2018 | CURRENT

Turning a Blind Eye on Partner Rape

UTSA researcher finds men often more forgiving than women when it comes to accusations of ‘intimate partner rape’

en are less likely than women to convict a man accused of raping his intimate partner, and are comparatively less sympathetic towards victims than defendants, UTSA psychologist Kellie Lynch found in recent research.

Lynch and four colleagues recruited over 280 adult U.S. citizens, enlisted and surveyed with online tools, to find out how jury-eligible Americans perceive intimate partner rape, perpetrated by a man against his female partner, in courtroom settings.

The researchers presented participants with a fictional trial featuring opening and closing arguments as well as witness testimony. The paid volunteers rated the accused and accuser on their credibility

and responsibility for the incident, then delivered a verdict: guilty of rape in the first degree, or not guilty.

In a second experiment, participants were given two more conviction options: intimate partner rape or sexual misconduct.

“Women were more willing to render a guilty verdict than men,” Lynch explained. “They rated the victim more positively — higher sympathy for the victim, lower blame, higher credibility — and rated the defendant more negatively.”

In both experiments, about two-thirds of men rendered a verdict of not guilty. Roughly half the women delivered not-guilty verdicts in the first experiment, but that number dropped to about 20 percent when they were given more options.

“Most women were saying that it was either sexual misconduct or intimate partner rape,” Lynch said.

“Very few men and women convicted the defendant of your typical, regular, felony rape.”

Participants who charged the man with sexual misconduct cited the partners’ relationship and previous sexual history as mitigating factors. The paper’s title, “She Is His Girlfriend — I Believe This Is A Different Situation,” is an exemplary quote from one volunteer.

The survey was intended to describe a first-degree rape, based on conversations Lynch had with a prosecutor. Heads-up, nastiness incoming: the man was punching furniture during an argument with his partner earlier that night, and the pair had not had sex for three months due to frequent arguments, so he “shouted at her that she was supposed to have sex with him” before “[holding] her down on the bed while he engaged in sexual intercourse” as she “[screamed] at him to stop.”

Lynch explained participants had “a ridiculously high standard of proof.”

“They think there must be all this evidence that a rape really occurred, and it’s just not the case,” Lynch said. “Clearly, there’s an issue here in what people think is ‘real rape.’”

ast year, Father Steven Gamez of San Antonio’s St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church felt compelled to comment on President Trump’s recently enacted “Muslim ban” during mass.

Slamming the country’s doors on refugees flies in the face of the Beatitudes, which state “blessed are the merciful,” he told the congregation. Afterward, an angry parishioner confronted the priest, demanding that he keep politics out of the pulpit.

“When things like that happen, it just gives me more fire, more energy, to preach even louder,” Gamez said. “My personality is to meet it head-on.”

Recent polls may show evangelicals supporting Trump in record numbers, but since the president took office, progressive faith leaders haven’t exactly kept quiet. Some have become increasingly vocal about the administration’s policies — even when it means stirring up difficult discussions

in their churches.

Earlier this week, the organization Vote Common Good stopped in San Antonio as part of a 31-city bus tour urging people of faith to help flip Congress. Organizers are counting on some Christians — evangelical and otherwise — being turned off enough

by Trump’s record on immigration, human rights and other issues to seek checks on his power.

“There are a lot of evangelicals who feel homeless right now,” said Doug Pagitt, the Minnesota pastor who leads Vote Common Good. “They watched the theological takeover of their faith, then they watched a Trumpian political takeover of their country.”

Vote Common Good’s San Antonio stop stumped for Democrats Gina Ortiz Jones, who’s running to unseat incumbent U.S. Rep. Will Hurd, and Joseph Kopser, who’s vying for the district vacated by Republican Rep. Lamar Smith.

But that’s far from the only indica-

tion religious progressives are eager to have an impact on the midterms.

A group of Catholic nuns is conducting a 54-stop tour to mobilize voters in opposition to the regressive tax law Republicans enacted. And a recent New York Times story examined grassroots support among evangelical women for Senate candidate Beto O’Rourke.

environment. He recalls how the Dutch Reformed Church was complicit in the apartheid system that oppressed that country’s black majority.

“To me, the problems we’re facing aren’t about Trump,” he said. “He’s a symptom of a deeper ill in our society that comes back to a system of white supremacy.”

Natalie Webb, pastor at Covenant Baptist Church of Garden Ridge, said her congregation is trying to make sense of the current political turmoil.

In recent sermons, she’s touched on the abuse allegations surrounding Kavanaugh hearing and the racism at the heart of the Charlottesville protests.

“They have seen so many tragic and hateful things happening,” she said. “I know that’s not new, but it now it feels more condensed.”

Even so, Webb said it’s not her place to endorse candidates or assign political solutions.

St. Rose’s Gamez agrees. Even with the recent confrontation and walkouts, he gives his parishioners credit for being able to vote their conscience.

And he hopes they show up at the polls come November.

“The Catholic Church will never tell you who to vote for, but as a Christian, there are issues that have to be at the forefront when you’re casting a ballot,” he said.

THE ELECTION COMING UP ON NOVEMBER 6 IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT IN OUR LIFETIMES. In both Texas and in Washington, D.C., one party dominates all three branches of government, rendering the other party virtually powerless. This is a dangerous situation in a democracy, more characteristic of dictatorship than of representative government. About half the population doesn’t have advocacy of its interests. Democracy is at its best when two (or more) parties share power and work together to achieve legislation that’s more or less satisfactory to both sides.

COMPROMISE IS CONSIDERED A DIRTY WORD THESE DAYS, BUT IT Some may believe that the Republican party is doing a fine job in Austin and in SHOULDN’T BE. WITHOUT IT, WE LOSE OUR DEMOCRATIC-REPUBLICAN Washington. But there is more to a great America than a booming stock market, lower taxes, and the preservation of jobs in the coal industry. The stock market is, if anything, PRINCIPLES AND WE LOSE THE BASIS OF CIVILIZATION. very uncertain now with the whimsical character of the current administration in Washington; taxes that have been lowered enhance corporate profits without having much effect on ordinary people; and jobs in coal are going to be lost in any case because coal has become uneconomical. The current administration is also taking credit for achievements begun or in place by the previous administration.

THE WEALTHIEST ONE OR TEN PERCENT MAY BE DOING JUST FINE RIGHT NOW, BUT THE REST OF US WILL BECOME INCREASINGLY UNDERSERVED IF THE REPUBLICAN PARTY CONTINUES WITH ITS PRIORITIES. AND THE DIVIDE BETWEEN RICH AND POOR IS GROWING STEADILY WIDER, PARTICULARLY IN SAN ANTONIO.

If the makeup of the U.S. Congress doesn’t change, we will see no addressing of urgent issues such as climate change (which is, regrettably, anything but a hoax) and gun safety. We are running out of time on making changes that would slow the effects of pollution on our atmosphere and we have already lost too many people, many of them children, to wanton gun violence. The Republican party sees neither issue as compelling. Consumer protections will also become increasingly weaker and health care will not see positive reform.

According to former Secretary of Labor Robert Reich, “Republican voter purges and other voter INTERESTS OF ORDINARY PEOPLE. suppression tactics are disenfranchising huge numbers of Black, Latino, and low-income voters.” That means that for many the very right to vote is endangered.

For one thing, Texas Republicans have made it so that straight-ticket voting will no longer be allowed. They did that hoping to discourage Democratic voters.

The November 6 election will be the last time straight-ticket voting will occur – unless Democrats gain a majority in the State Legislature and vote to repeal that law. Other attempts at voter suppression are occurring in Texas as well.

EVEN FAIR-MINDED REPUBLICANS HAVE TO AGREE THAT ONE-PARTY RULE ULTIMATELY DISADVANTAGES ALL OF US. GOVERNMENT SHOULD BE FOR THE MAJORITY OF PEOPLE AND NOT FOR A MINORITY.

Texas ranks 49th in the country for voter turnout, and those who don’t vote tend to be middle to lower income people. This is how the wealthiest segment of the population gets what it wants, often at the expense of the majority. If people who now don’t vote began voting – and the November 6 election is a good place to start – it could change a lot of bad things that are happening. And not just domestically. Our foreign policy is in shambles: The President has offended our allies and sent contradictory messages elsewhere. He has brought us very close to a resumption of the Cold War, and has precipitated a new alliance between Russia and China. He has demonstrated a remarkable lack of competence in world affairs and the current Republican Congress is too afraid of him to provide checks and balances, as is their duty under the Constitution.

Season three of the HLN original truecrime documentary series How It Really Happened with Hill Harper premiered earlier this month and has since aired a four-part episode on serial killer, rapist and necrophile Ted Bundy and a two-part episode on killer Jodi Arias.

On October 24, San Antonio will get to see a preview screening of the show’s November 4 episode, Selena: Fatal Encounter, which revisits the life and shocking 1995 murder of 23-year-old Queen of Tejano music Selena Quintanilla-Perez at the hands of her fan-club president and friend Yolanda Saldivar.

The 42-minute episode includes interviews with Larry Young, former Corpus Christi police officer and hostage and crisis negotiator; Elissa Sterling, former assistant district attorney; and Martin Gomez, former fashion designer for Selena’s clothing line. Voyeurism gives way to sneaking suspicion and high-risk behavior in 1954’s Rear Window, widely considered one of suspense master Alfred Hitchcock’s finest cinematic offerings and often counted among the best films of all time. Based on the 1942 short story “It Had to Be Murder” and two grisly cases Hitchcock plucked from newspapers of the day, the classic zeroes in on photojournalist L.B. “Jeff” Jeffries during a sizzling New York City summer as he resorts to spying on his neighbors through their open windows as a diversion while recuperating from a broken leg. Through his binoculars and telephoto lens, Jeff begins to craft narratives for strangers – Miss Torso (a dancer), Miss Lonelyhearts (a suicidal spinster) and the Songwriter (Ross Bagdasarian, the late actor and musician we can thank for creating Alvin and the Chipmunks). In the process of piecing together an imagined, neighborhood soap opera, he stumbles upon Lars Thorwald (a character Hitchcock allegedly modeled after producer/frenemy David O. Selznick) and comes to the conclusion that he’s murdered and dismembered his wife. Somewhat reluctantly, Jeff’s socialite girlfriend Lisa (Grace Kelly) and insurance-appointed nurse Stella (Thelma Ritter) get sucked into a DIY detective plot that explores what New York Times critic Bosley Crowther once described as “the impulse of morbid curiosity” and slyly flips the script by using a single set to turn viewers into voyeurs — effectively seducing them away from the monotony of their own lives. Stand-up comedian and rapper Chingo Bling brings his Puro Hustle Tour to San Antonio for four nights of laughs mostly centered on Latino culture. Born Pedro Herrera III in Houston, the Trinity University graduate took on the name Chingo Bling in 2000 and made a name for himself by performing parody versions of a number of popular songs like Drake’s “Hotline Bling” (You call me on my Cricket/Late night when you want me to kick it). In one of his newer videos on his YouTube channel, Bling throws shade at the current administration in a song called “Chipz N’ Salsa.” In the music video, items from south of the border have been deemed contraband via executive order. Along with his stand-up, music and active presence on social media, Bling also hosts his own podcast What Did He Said? Serving up a reflective counterpoint to the ghosts, goblins and zombies that haunt Halloween, the pre-Columbian tradition of Día de los Muertos thrives in San Antonio through a wide assortment of celebrations on or around All Saints’ Day (November 1) and All Souls’ Day (November 2). Chomping at the bit, the wildly popular Día de los Muertos at La Villita (aka Muertos Fest) adds a contemporary, user-friendly spin to the occasion, which typically revolves around homegrown altars that honor the dearly departed with cherished items, favorite snacks, keepsakes, marigolds and deathly hallmarks including sugar skulls, pán de muerto and papier-mâché skeletons.

In the 1990s, Maxwell rose to stardom singing seductive, ‘70s-inspired tunes, or as some might call it: baby-making music. Mid90s is an impressive and empathetic directorial debut from Oscar-nominated actor Jonah Hill

I

t looks like two-time Academy Award-nominated actor and first-time writer/director Jonah Hill (Moneyball) has picked up a few tricks during his 14-year career from some of the top-tier filmmakers he’s worked with, including Bennett Miller, Martin Scorsese and Joel and Ethan Coen. In his admirable directorial debut Mid90s, Hill proves he’s operating from a place of purity, compassion and meaningful emotion.

In a way, Mid90s is the spiritual successor to Larry Clark’s controversial 1995 indie film Kids, although not nearly as provocative (at least by today’s standards). Hill has crafted a lived-in world where his young characters — most of them teenage boys — feel like they are the kings of their own destiny. From the perspective of a child, it’s not as captivating or unique as films like The Florida Project, Where the Wild Things Are or Beasts of the Southern Wild, but Hill has tapped into a specific time and location worthy of thoughtful exploration.

Set in Los Angeles in the, well, mid-’90s, Hill introduces us to his crew led by actor Sunny Suljic (The Killing of a Sacred Deer) in what will undoubtedly be considered his breakout role in years to come.

Suljic stars as Stevie, an undersized 13-year-old kid in search of his own identity and reputation.

Stevie’s home life is bearable, although he’d probably like it more if his aggressive older brother Ian (Lucas Hedges) would stop beating the hell out of him. Their single mother (Katherine Waterson) is loving, but gives them the freedom to do as they please. That independence leads Stevie to

a local skate shop where he finds solace hanging around with the teens who frequent (or work at) the store.

The young men — aspiring skateboard pro Ray (Na-kel Smith), jealous Ruben (Gio Galicia), aspiring filmmaker “Fourth Grade” (Ryder McLaughlin) and scene-stealing slacker “Fuckshit” (Olan Prenatt) — take a liking to Stevie, who starts skateboarding with them. Mid90s is a plotless film, so we spend most of the time observing the guys as they skate, smoke weed, drink beer, insult each other and talk about what they want to do with their lives and why they like skating. It’s a shifting dynamic that is authentic and, occasionally, deeply moving.

As far as coming-of-age films go, Mid90s isn’t groundbreaking, but the impression that Hill is connected to the material in an intimate way is strong. He knows these kids’ lives and doesn’t settle for the easy route by diluting the narrative with nostalgia-heavy scenes or an overshadowing soundtrack. In Mid90s, Hill wants us to empathize with these boys. We’re all the better for him allowing us to do just that.

Monumental Misfire Silencio suffers from an identity crisis steered by an aimless script

hhh. Hear that sound? That’s Silencio, an overambitious sci-fi melodrama written, produced and directed by Lorena Villarreal, landing with a gigantic thud. Using the vague “inspired by true events” proclamation at the beginning of the film is ironic since Silencio’s script is so uninspiring.

Set on the backdrop of a real event that happened over 40 years ago, Silencio opens with the explosion of a U.S. Air Force missile launched from the Green River Complex in Utah in July 1977. While the intended target of the rocket was the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico, it veered off course and hit a region in the Mexican desert known as the Zone of Silence.

a magnetic vortex that causes bizarre things to take place like blocked radio transmissions, mutated plants and animals, and alien sightings. Because the missile included a radioactive chemical element, a team of scientists were sent to clean up the debris.

This is the point of Silencio where the true narrative ends, and Villarreal takes the reins for an absurd journey that mixes elements of ghost stories, crime thrillers and time-travel nonsense to create an awkward bilingual hybrid lacking a real identity. It might’ve been a better idea if Villarreal had done what director Brad Parker did when he unleashed hordes of mutants in the awful 2012 horror flick Chernobyl Diaries set more than two decades after the Chernobyl

nuclear disaster. At least Diaries knows what kind of movie it is.

Instead, Villarreal, whose only other film credit is for writing and directing the 2004 Spanish-language thriller Las Lloronas — based on the Mexican folklore myth of La Llorona — slaps together a bunch of sci-fi gibberish and hopes for the best. Luckily, actor John Noble (TV’s Fringe) is able to keep his head above water long enough to deliver a sufficient performance.

Nobel stars as Dr. James White, one of the scientists who goes to the site where the radioactive missile crashes. During the cleanup, he unearths a contaminated rock that possesses time-traveling powers. Years later, James — now an uncommunicative old man — is determined to find the magic rock he buried long ago with the help of his granddaughter Ana (Melinda Matthews) and a medium who reawakens his spirit.

Convoluted and aimless, it’s impossible to fully explain what Silencio actually is without getting a migraine. If your threshold for pain (or bad movies) is high, wait for it on DVD so you can watch it on mute. It just might make for a more enjoyable experience.

As San Antonio Celebrates Startup Week, One New Kitchen Could Help Launch a Thousand Businesses

t’s not that entrepreneurship is having a moment. But as San Antonio celebrates the second-ever Startup Week through Friday, October 26, it’s kind of the best time to be an entrepreneur because there is a plethora of knowledge available for wouldbe business owners.

This year’s SASW, sponsored by the 80/20 Foundation, Geekdom, USAA and Trinity University, features more than 75 events ranging from happy hours to open houses and panels. One event repeats through Thursday afternoon, and might be useful for most San Antonians trying to get into the food-production business.

Though it still physically bears the name of the business that came before it (Sue Sheff, a local food delivery service that’s now closed), Alamo Kitchens (alamokitchens.org) is hoping its interiors will be familiar to San Antonians in need of a commercial kitchen.

Owner Tracie Shelton, a small business advisor at UTSA’s Small Business Development Center, has a background in accounting and marketing. But her love of food and food business developed after the birth of her daughter, when Shelton realized the power of food as medicine, education and wellness.

She developed a business plan through the help of Launch SA, and was awarded $15,000 through the accelerator’s Venture Challenge program, so opening Alamo Kitchens happened sooner than she originally planned.

Shelton was doing due diligence. She met with Michelle Soliz, the owner of now-closed Bake, Broil & Brew, to learn of the struggles she’d faced, and was searching for a space in the city’s East Side when the central San Antonio location with a fully equipped kitchen (complete with a commercial vent hood that regularly costs restaurant owners at least a couple grand to install) became available.

It was too good to pass up.

For now, the space serves as a prep kitchen for caterers such as chef Kenny York of Leviticus Catering, and meal-prep companies. It’s the kitchen for the growing Doubleside Toffee Co., and the popular Crepelandia, which preps there before their busy days at the Pearl Farmers Market.

Alamo Kitchens serves a culinary co-working space. All partners adhere to a handbook.

All have access to the merchandiser refrigerator to store goods for the day. All have 24-hour access to the 1,154-square-foot space

and can schedule blocks of time online. It’s like Geekdom, but for caterers, restaurateurs, pop-ups and more.

If there’s ever a time to think of a restaurant as a startup, this would be it. Generally, just over 20 percent of restaurants fail or close within their first year. In San Antonio, commercial kitchens are hard to come by.

Finding a space with a flat fee that includes business mentorship, connections to attorneys and other business services, and marketing help like Shelton plans to offer – all of that could mean entrepreneurs who dive into the food industry might make it work after all. It could help someone fulfill a dream or show them that maybe the culinary field isn’t a good fit — without the huge investment.

If growth goes as planned, Alamo Kitchens will eventually open a larger space that Shelton is still on the hunt for. But for now, she’s focusing on San Antonio Startup Week. The kitchen is open daily at 4:30 p.m. through Thursday.

The Looming Moon 5 artists you need to check out at this year’s Mala Luna Music Festival

n the heels of ACL, Mala Luna Music Festival is about to return for the third annual weekend celebration of music and culture, including several major headliners.

Beyond lining up rap sensation Cardi B, organizers booked 2 Chainz and Young Thug for the festival, which also includes Nicky Jam, Tyler, The Creator, Lil Pump, Dillon Francis and more.

This year’s event will take place Halloween weekend — on Saturday, October 27, and Sunday, October 28 — in the Nelson Wolff Stadium parking lot.

Here are five acts and artists that you absolutely need to check out if you find yourself at the fest this year.

What can be said about Cardi B that we don’t already know and almost always adore (even when she throws a shoe at Nicki Minaj)? Even through the drama, we seem to be collectively living for the “Bodak Yellow” singer who continues to top charts with every release of new music. The fact that she’s playing Mala Luna is a pretty big deal, and you’d be silly not to catch her live set.

We all pretty much knew who Young Thug was, but it definitely was when he donned Alessandro Trincone’s periwinkle dress on the cover of his mixtape “No, My Name is Jeffrey” that we all started paying a little more attention. The eccentric fashion icon and rapper falls into the category of mumble rap.

What separates this dude from other folks in his genre, though, is his range and ability to showcase a variety of textures and timbres, which keeps listeners tuned into the notwords that he says sometimes.

Much like Code Orange has brought back this aggressive-as-fuck, beat-down hardcore reminiscent of early Throwdown, Bury Your Dead, etc., Knocked Loose is a name you need to familiarize yourself with if you dig all things hardcore. Lucky for all you HXC fans out there, Knocked Loose is headed to the Alamo City to bring their pummeling breakdowns and anguished vocals to help you get out all your seasonal hate in the mosh pit. It’s OK, BB — let it all out. The band is on tour with poppy post-hardcore outfit Beartooth and Sylar, another post-hardcore quintet that combines djent with all the traditional textures of metalcore. Released just two years ago, Live! 8-24-1979 is almost definitive proof that whichever parallel-reality America The B-52’s swooped in from is clearly the superior one. Eisenhower-era cheese — beehive hairdos, tiki and hot-rod culture, etc. — was reappropriated and weaponized by punks who watched at least as many beach-party movies as biker-gang flicks (“Rock Lobster”) and shook their moneymakers doing the “Aqua Velva” and the “Hypocrite” (“Dance This Mess Around”). There, the disco vs. punk dichotomy must be nonexistent: Gay icon Fred Schneider gamely offering to “kiss your pineapple” on the dance floor deserves the same kind of guitar squawl as Roger Daltry growling “I hope I die before I get old” once merited (“Strobe Light”). It’s official: boy bands are back. Honestly, we’re not that mad about it. This summer, hot new boy band Prettymuch announced their fall North American headlining outing, the Funktion Tour.

The tour kicked off October 18 in Seattle and also make stops in Los Angeles, New York, Chicago and Toronto. LA’s Prettiest Eyes makes music that is a swampy amalgam of styles, all converging around a messy, proto-punk core. The three-piece plays fast and evokes emotion with wild abandon, but is equally capable of settling into a psychedelic groove or smearing a shimmering mountain of muck with a bright synth passage. That Castleface Records, a label run by members of Thee Oh Sees, released Prettiest Eyes’ most recent album, 2017’s excellent Pools, goes a long way in describing the group’s sound.

Opening for the act, ATX’s Rattlesnake Milk, no stranger to the SA scene for those who have been paying any attention, will offer up its cow-punk, no-wave country (with a twinge of what I’d call psychobilly) sound. Paired together, the two acts make for a show that should be boiling over with restless energy and sweaty-ass guitar licks. $5-$7, 9pm, Paper Tiger, 2410 N. SAW BLACK + CLAYTON ENGLAND Friday, October 26

This weekend, fans of traditional singer-songwriter-style Americana won’t want to miss this fine bill of touring Virginians. Both solo performers are steeped in the sonic rural traditions of their native state, but each takes that basic, endlessly fertile blueprint to slightly different places. First of all, Saw Black, with his pretty yet faraway sounding voice (almost like a cross between Conor Oberst and M. Ward, but with more twang), makes alt-country that

incorporates steel guitars, experimental extrapolations, and occasional percussion, along with penetrating and wellwrought lyrics. Clayton England, for his part, makes folk with blues influences and a kind of back-porch soul vibe, at least partly owing to the gritty richness (even chunkiness) of his voice. When Rolling Stone declares you the “Best Young Gun” in its “Best of Rock” issue, you’re making impact on the world with your music. Born and raised in Austin, Gary Clark Jr. picked up the guitar at 12 years old and the rest is sort of history. His sound is a blend of the

classics like Eric Clapton, B.B. King and the Stones, but also soul, hip-hop and even elements of Americana/folk for a unique sound that’s been garnering attention for nearly a decade. Clark just announced an extensive U.S. tour with previously announced shows originally planned for June now moved to the fall. Hi, Dan: I am a homosexual young adult seeking advice about kitten play. I find it very intriguing, and I’m wondering where to start. It’s a turnon when someone calls me kitten, but I’m not sure how to express my kink or desire for kink play to the person or persons I am into. Any advice would be appreciated.

Constructive Advice Thoughtfully Sought

Hi, CATS: I am a homosexual not-soyoung adult without much advice to offer where kitten play is concerned. I’ve encountered plenty of gay puppies in the wild – at various leather/fetish events – but I’ve seen only one fetish kitty in my lifetime, and she was a queen. (A female cat is called a queen, a male cat is called a tom, and a group of cats is called a glare. #TheMoreYouKnow!)

But Amp Somers, who hosts the kink-friendly sex-ed show Watts the Safeword, assures me that gay kitties are definitely a thing.

“Kitten play is a subcategory of the ‘animal role-play’ or ‘pet play’ kink,” said Somers. “It is a form of domination and submission in which someone gets into the head space of an animal they are role-playing and takes on its characteristics – be it with gear (masks, tails, collars) or by acting out the mannerisms of their animal. Most importantly, and this goes for all proper pet players, there are no actual animals involved in this play.”

Puppy play is the most common form of pet play – by far – and it’s very popular among younger gay kinksters. (Please don’t confuse gay pups or kitties with gay bears or otters. The former is about role-play and fetish; the latter is about body type, affirmation, and community.) But what accounts for the popularity of pet play among younger kinksters?

“This sort of play allows someone to get into kink easily with or without a partner and in a playful manner,” said Somers. “Pet play

allows players to get their feet wet in the BDSM world without having to visit a dark dungeon, get tied up, or engage in anything a newer kinkster might find intimidating. It’s a great entry-level kink.”

As for expressing your kink, CATS, that’s something you’re going to have to work out on your own.

“I imagine CATS already has an image of what kitten play looks like to them, and I bet it differs from what I might imagine my own pet play would look like or even from what readers imagine a kitten player to look like,” said Somers. “Is CATS a domesticated lazy kitten who lies in the sun? A curious, well-trained, docile cat responsive to cuddles and treats?

Or are they a rambunctious, bratty, independent stray?”

To find your way into the kink scene, Somers recommends getting online.

“That’s how I first found pet play,” he said. “Sites like kitten-play.com offer in-depth written pieces by players, links to resources, and forums where people like CATS can educate themselves. Other sites like FetLife or Facebook provide more private groups to ‘meet’ others, ask more in depth questions, find local get-togethers, and make friends to socialize with. Or if they prefer video content, YouTube has a number of creators (like ‘Scream Kiwi’) who talk about their kinks in a fun, educational, and personal way. And once CATS feels comfortable in their own identity and has defined what they want out of this play, they will be able to really communicate to their partner(s) what they’re into and what they want out of kitten play.”
