Texas is among the most aggressive states when it comes to pitching voters off the rolls

exas has some of the harshest voter ID laws in the country, and it doesn’t exactly make things easy for folks wanting to register.

Now, with midterms fast approaching, a new report warns the state also is among the most aggressive about dropping voters from its rolls — possibly even some who shouldn’t be removed.

Voter purges are designed to eliminate registrations of people who have died or relocated, lessening the potential for fraud. But a report by the NYU School of Law’s Brennan Center for Justice warns those efforts also could keep legitimate voters from participating in the midterms.

“Some states deleted more voters’ names than they had in the past, increasing the chance that eligible voters find themselves missing from the rolls on Election Day,” said Myrna Pérez, head of the center’s voting rights and elections project. “We did not find one state that was doing enough to protect against bad purges.”

Nationally, between the federal elections of 2014 and 2016, almost 4 million more names were purged from the rolls than between 2006 and 2008, according to the report. In Texas alone, that increase was around 363,000 names.

Weak Matches The likelihood of people being wrongly removed rises when states are too lax with their data comparisons, the report warns.

In some cases, election authorities used “weak” matches to check voters against the Social Security Administration’s list of deceased Americans, according to the center. Such matches might only check the last four digits of a Social Security number rather than all nine, for example.

More than 68,000 of the 80,000 voters identified as possibly dead in a Texas purge were classified as weak matches in one 2012 analysis.

The report cites the example of a living Air Force vet named James

Harris Jr. who was flagged for removal because some of his information matched a deceased Arkansas resident.

The Texas secretary of state, which oversees voting, disputes the Brennan Center’s claim. Its examples are the result of local elections officials’ data checks, not the state’s, according to spokesman Sam Taylor.

“Unless there’s anything other than a strong match, our agency can’t unilaterally cull anyone from the rolls,” he said.

In contrast to Ohio and Georgia, Texas has no automatic purge of people who don’t vote, Taylor added. Moving and not confirming one’s new address with the secretary of state will result in a person being placed on a “suspense list.” But, even then, they aren’t removed from the rolls unless they don’t vote again for the next four years.

Growing Risk Regardless of whether the weak matches are the result of state or local action, the Brennan Center warns the risks are likely to grow.

Under President Trump, the Justice Department has backed away from monitoring for overly aggressive purges. Indeed, it’s sent inquiry letters to election officials that voting-rights advocates worry may be precursors to lawsuits prompting states to be more aggressive.

What’s more, conservative activist groups have sued state and local jurisdictions in a bid to force them into purges. Last year, the Public Interest Legal Foundation announced it had brought nine suits in six states alleging lax oversight of voter rolls.

Ultimately, the Brennan Center recommends reforms such as automatic voter registration as a means to take bad data, sloppy handling and politics out of the process.

“It’s important to keep voter lists up-to-date and accurate,” said Jonathan Brater, counsel in the center’s Democracy Program. “But any effort must at the very minimum be guided by the safeguards outlined under federal law.”

A Borderland Poetry Masterclass with Octavio Quintanilla

A

fter a few minutes with San Antonio’s poet laureate, Octavio Quintanilla, I already feel like I’m deep into a creative writing masterclass.

As I sip my outsize espresso at Halcyon at the Blue Star Arts Complex, he agrees that there can be an artistic danger in censuring oneself during the writing process.

Even before his rise, Quintanilla, 45, viewed his poetry as a means of “confronting the world” around him. And, as someone “in the business of ideas,” he feels that this confrontation of notions, ideas and traditions gives him the opportunity to show “empathy for the world” through his work – which is laden with honesty. Being that honest can require a little boldness and artistic abandon when considering the current social climate where the oversensitivity of political correctness can easily lead to woeful, public misunderstandings. “If I’m not gonna be honest when I’m writing, what’s the point of writing?” he says as he adjusts his seafarer-style glasses. “I’d be lying to myself.”

Though he feels his poems are “not necessarily autobiographical,” he does feel his words have an element of “emotional autobiography.” And, as a Mexican-American with a story to tell, he seems to have a lot from which to pull.

Quintanilla was born in Harlingen. He lived, however, in Mexico for the first nine years of his life. When he turned nine, he returned to the Rio Grande Valley.

“Unfortunately, my parents stayed behind,” he recalls. “It was just me and my little brother that came over here to study, so there was that aspect of separation [and] dislocation.” When he says this, he reminds me – just for a moment – of “Separation,” a painting by local artist David Blancas.

In fact, that’s one of the many topics that he covers in his new Frontextos project, a series of visual poetry selections on his Facebook wall. He says he knows he’s “taking a risk in terms of subject matter.” The poems cover topics about the body, sexual relationships, race and political situations. “I don’t really go into writing censuring myself,” he says as he shows me number 278 in which he visually explores the symbolism of trees. “My life is an autobiographical template for work.”

Because our interview is in English, I keep reminding myself that his work these days is in Spanish.

“People have asked me, ‘Why do you write in Spanish?’ I think it’s been a way for me to return to that which I lost. [I’m trying] to capture or relearn or

practice the language that I grew up talking but that, to a great extent, I forgot.”

Quintanilla proudly embraces the Spanish spoken at the borderlands, which may seem very similar to the Spanglish and Tex-Mex dialects.

Quintanilla, who’s a professor at Our Lady of the Lake University, discusses his writing process unaffectedly, and, over the span of a couple of hours, he elaborates on his daily, meditative approach.

“There are things I’m not ready to write about,” he says as Janet Jackson’s “What Have You Done for Me Lately” gently pulsates in the background. “I’m waiting for the right time to write about it.”

Is there a wrong time to write about something? I ask.

“Well, when you’re not clear about what it is you have to say,” he replies. “I’m not in the business of writing just to make a statement. I’ve always felt that what I do... I’m doing it with some type of... intentionality.”

He says that there are some experiences that he’s not ready to write about or reveal because he still “hasn’t found a way to heal” in regard to the subject.

Some writers would use writing as a way to heal. Do you think that’s wise? I ask.

“I think we can make the distinction between writing to heal and writing to publish,” he replies.

A week before, I met Quintanilla for the first time at the Letras en la Frontera Conference, a gathering of writers who write in Spanish. Writers from all over Latin America read their work to pockets of the local Spanish-language literary set. “We really don’t have many spaces for writers who writing in Spanish,” he says matter-of-factly. When I tell him I attended the conference as a personal, guilty pleasure, he says, “We’re kind of lucky. We can move between two worlds... English and Spanish. I’m a huge advocate for writing and speaking in Spanish.

“I mean, think about it. Right now, there’s this hate rhetoric against people who speak Spanish,” he says thoughtfully. “There’s a lot of fucking hate about that. I mean, you saw the poetry that I’ve been writing lately. It’s all in Spanish. It’s a way to resist. I think spaces like [the conference] are resisting that rhetoric of hate.”

How long does it take you to come up with a title?

I ask.

“Aww… fuck, man,” he replies with exasperation. “It takes me a long time, dude.”

Democrat Beto O’Rourke blows up quarterly fundraising record for senate

exas Democrat Beto O’Rourke may be lagging in the polls, but it hasn’t stopped him from raising a record pile of campaign cash.

The O’Rourke campaign announced last week an unprecedented third-quarter intake of $38.1 million to fuel its attempted takedown of Republican incumbent Sen. Ted Cruz.

That’s the largest quarterly haul in history for a U.S. Senate campaign, according to CNN. Not to say that Cruz’s campaign had a shabby third quarter.

It raised $12 million from July through September.

“The people of Texas in all 254 counties are proving that when we reject PACs and come together not as Republicans or Democrats but as Texans and Americans, there’s no stopping us,” O’Rourke said in a prepared statement. “This is a historic campaign of people: all people, all the time, everywhere, every single day — that’s how we’re going to win this election and do something incredible for Texas and our country at this critical moment.”

O’Rourke, who’s eschewed money from corporate or labor PACs, said the money came from 800,000 individual contributions. Still, outside groups have thrown $236,790 in support his way, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

Despite the fundraising victory, O’Rourke remains the underdog, and Texas hasn’t elected a Democrat to statewide office in more than two decades. A recent Quinnipiac University poll places Cruz ahead of O’Rourke, 54-45.

‘100 YEARS OF PRINTMAKING IN SAN ANTONIO: MICHAEL MENCHACA’

Organized by McNay Prints and Drawings Curator Lyle Williams, the Tricentennial exhibition series “100 Years of Printmaking in San Antonio” smartly illustrates the seemingly endless possibilities and myriad subgenres of the medium. Having recently highlighted the quiet, poetic work of old-school master Kent Rush, the series wraps up on a decidedly noisy, new-school note with Michael Menchaca. Menchaca — who is one half of the Dos Mestizx duo responsible for the sprawling airport mural ¡Adelante San Antonio! — has enjoyed a steady rise on the local art scene via exhibitions at Artpace, Ruiz-Healy Art and Presa House Gallery, to name a few.

Exemplifying an overused phrase, there’s a lot going on in Menchaca’s prints and animations — cats don mustaches and sombreros, Prince performs at the Battle of Flowers Parade, Trump and Clinton appear frozen in a state of shrieking rage, and Mesoamerican worshippers sacrifice themselves to a rat god known as El Diedad de Queso. A dizzying collision of symbols culled from Aztec codices, Menchaca’s oeuvre is rendered playfully with splashy, cartoony elements and nods to video games but closer inspection often reveals pervasive borderland issues, including illegal immigration, drug smuggling and human trafficking. admit to data leaks or outright hacks, users fret, the companies pledge to do better, and government regulators (sometimes) issue stern warnings.

Repeat.” Tech giants are allegedly trying to protect us from hackers and malware but they’re also so hell-bent on capitalizing on us that our phones function as tracking devices, personal shoppers and astute observers of our behavioral patterns (see iPhone’s creepy “Significant Locations” feature, ironically filed under Privacy>Location Services). While most tech users have probably thought twice at this point about what they’re sharing

and how they’re sharing it online, these concerns should be taken into consideration in terms of how we present ourselves, our ideas, our work in real life as well. Co-curated by sharp, conceptual artists and educators Christie Blizard and Mark McCoin, UTSA’s new group show “Then There Is Us: Art in the Time of Surveillance” explores how artists have “adapted/responded to the idea of a control society, particularly one where the conditions of surveillance are both imagined and real.” Posing increasingly relevant questions of personal liberties, censorship and artistic freedom, the exhibition looks at how creatives “function in such a culture” through the eyes of artists Houston Fryer, Cristina Goletti, Jason Eric Gonzales Martinez and Justin Korver. A foundations and new-media instructor at UTSA, California native Fryer studied drawing and painting before relocating to San Antonio and currently runs the university’s offsite gallery Terminal 136. A well-traveled movement specialist who currently teaches at the University of Texas at El Paso, Goletti choreographs works informed by her research in “dance dramaturgy, interdisciplinary performance practices and gender studies.” Creatively influenced by his indigenous ancestry and the Mexican-American experience in Texas, Gonzales Martinez addresses hybridity and intersectionality through compositions that establish a “visual dialog based on a critical mestizaje, the area of overlap that constructs identity beyond race and ethnicity.” As for Korver, who grew up in Iowa, teaches at Texas A&M-San Antonio and has an admitted “passion for hardware stores,” his work

often takes everyday items (including tools, gloves and trucker hats) out of context and places them in unusual, witty arrangements involving embroidery, sculptural elements and dripping layers of paint. Murphy, Juan Torres and Andre Villaplana — finds performers, inspired by the great/ terrible horror films of the 1980s and 1990s, making it up as they go along, with some opportunities for audience input. Since timing is so integral to the execution of a horror piece, you can imagine just how humorously awry things can go with an unscripted performance like this. The events of the play follow a cast of stock, teen horror movie archetypes, “The Jock, The Nerd, The Party Girl and The Virgin,” as they try to survive the advances of a killer on the loose. True appreciators of horror films have long been attracted to the genre as much for its humor as for its more grizzly aspects. In 2009, Avenida Guadalupe Association Executive Director Gabriel Quintero Velasquez launched Una Noche en la Gloria as a multidisciplinary extravaganza designed to “promote San Antonio’s underserved creative micro-entrepreneurs.” Billed as an “ambitious economic development strategy converging visual art, fashion and the performance-art world,” the free outdoor event takes shape each year in an arts-forward block party with performance stages, pop-up exhibits, eclectic vendors and creative surprises around every corner. Showcasing everything from fashion designers and indie bands to slam poets and lowriders, the event makes for excellent people-watching, photo ops and aimless strolling in the heart of the West Side. What You Need to Know About This Year’s Luminaria Contemporary Arts Festival

he Alamo City’s answer to illuminated nighttime festivals in Europe — Paris’ Nuit Blanche and Madrid’s La Noche en Blanco in particular — Luminaria has done considerable shape-shifting since its 2008 launch via former Mayor Phil Hardberger. Under the direction of curator Kathy Armstrong since 2015, the ambitious, multidisciplinary undertaking has weathered storms and inevitable criticisms throughout its evolution, admirably seeking to outdo itself each year while taking over rambling footprints anchored by the Southwest School of Art, the San Antonio Museum of Art and Dignowity Park. game-changing adjustments Armstrong has made are the reinstatement of an open call for artists and the creation of a multidisciplinary Curatorial Committee that’s reconfigured each year.

Last year saw the festival returning to still-evolving Hemisfair Park, where it operated from 2011 to 2013, for an outing featuring unusual performances, projections and full-on productions in and around Yanaguana Garden, the Magik Theatre, the Mexican Cultural Institute, UNAM–San Antonio and several of the historic structures that dot the park. For its second year back in what some consider its most user-friendly home, this year’s Luminaria,

set for Saturday, November 10, will showcase commissioned projects by more than 50 artists and groups.

est known as one of the wittiest panelists on National Public Radio’s comedy news quiz show Wait, Wait…Don’t Tell Me, comedian Paula Poundstone has come a long way since starring in the cheesy 1984 cult sci-fi movie Hyperspace as a transmission repair shop cashier who is kidnapped by an intergalactic villain known as Lord Buckethead.

Since her clash with space aliens 34 years ago, Poundstone has gone on to thrive on the stand-up comedy circuit. Along with her steady guest appearances on NPR, Poundstone has recently started her own podcast, Nobody Listens to Paula Poundstone, and released her new book The Totally Unscientific Study of the Search for Human Happiness.

The Current caught up with Poundstone late last month to talk about her upcoming stand-up show and why America’s Founding Fathers could never have predicted a Donald Trump presidency.

Explain how the show you’re bringing to San Antonio is different from what we hear from you on the radio?

Well, I won’t be answering any questions about the week’s news, so let’s have no disappointment there.

You know, I’m a stand-up. My act is largely autobiographical. My favorite part of the night is talking to the audience. If you start with, “What do you do for a living?” little biographies of audience members emerge and I use that to set my sails. Usually, what I say is unique to the people in front of me, but I do have 39 years of material rattling around in my head.

Most stand-up comedians have a script they stick to and maybe improvise a little if it’s called for, but it sounds like you do the exact opposite.

In the beginning, I tried really hard to stick to a script. The truth is, I haven’t really developed my memorizing abilities. I wasn’t very good at that, so I don’t ask it of myself anymore. I noticed that trying so hard to say what I planned to say created this rigidity for me — the stress of trying to memorize stuff. The funniest stuff I say is the stuff I haven’t planned. I like to be in the here and now and allow myself to say whatever I want.

It’s funny that we’re talking about memory and you had a role in the Pixar film Inside Out as a character who dumps memories.

Yes, that truly is my role in life. I’m good on stage

when I can build a story with what people say, but in the rest of my life — oh my gosh, I have the worst memory. My children have mocked me about it for years and manipulated me as a result. They used to love to tell me I said stuff that I absolutely never said.

Your podcast Nobody Listens to Paula Poundstone seems to be doing really well. On your most recent podcast, you had a professional poker player, a nutrition specialist and a flutist on your panel. How do you decide on the combination of guests?

So far, I’ve asked [producers] to get guests who could answer my questions about life in general. It’s a mixture of who [I request] and which [guests] are available. Then we say, “Well, this sounds like a fun combination.” The truth is, the only guy to really make any money off of a podcast is Marc Maron. Everyone has a podcast. Asking someone to be on your podcast is the new asking someone with a truck to help you move.

You do it sheepishly.

Your latest book, The Totally Unscientific Study of

arts the Search for Human Happiness, was nominated for the 2018 Audio Book of the Year, but lost to a book (Lincoln in the Bardo) with 166 narrators. How is that fair?

[Laughs] Well, life isn’t fair. I didn’t write an acceptance speech because I saw that Margaret Atwood was on the list of [nominees]. So, I thought, “What are the odds of [my book] beating out A Handmaid’s Tale?!” How would that look if I was standing on stage saying, “Good try, Margaret! Some clever ideas in your book. Keep it up!”

Who would make a better President, Donald Trump or Lord Buckethead (who ended up on ballots of real parliamentary elections in the U.K.)?

Oh, Lord Buckethead by far! You know, there’s almost no one who wouldn’t make a better president. It’s mind-blowing what’s happening. I’m not a great historian and I have large gaps in my body of knowledge and I’m certainly not a genius of constitutional study, but it strikes me that our founders never saw this coming.

Along comes this despot who uses [social media] effectively. There’s no way anybody could’ve predicted that back when they had to have somebody hold the scrolls so it didn’t keep rolling up on their quill.

The Hate U Give raises a powerful voice for social justice and an end to racial animus

he names of the countless unarmed black men and boys whose lives have ended at the hands of white police officers in the name of law enforcement have reverberated across the nation in recent years. Eric Garner, Michael Brown, Tamir Rice, Philando Castile, Freddie Grey, Alton Sterling, Walter Scott and many others — the list is a frightening reminder of the epidemic in this country that, in many cases, points back to a systematic breakdown in race relations.

o matter how tender the turkey or fluffy the mashed potatoes, Thanksgiving dinner is probably not going very well if there is a government official unconscious in the living room with spinal fluid draining from his ears.

Nevertheless, grab a fork (or other sharp utensil) and pull up a chair for The Oath, a savagely funny dark comedy where participating in the political rancor is the only way to survive through dessert.

Making his directorial debut — and also penning the script and starring in the lead role — is Ike Barinholtz (TV’s The Mindy Project), who was seen earlier this year in Blockers helping John Cena chug beer through his butt (known to Brett Kavanaugh as “boofing”). In The Oath, Barinholtz plays Chris, an aggravated liberal husband and father who, along with his wife Kai (Tiffany Haddish), decide to host Thanksgiving at their home.

number of these heartbreaking incidents have been captured on video and disseminated through social media, and because people like Colin Kaepernick are taking a knee (and making a stand) against social injustice. Stories like these are finding new platforms with the help of social media and Hollywood.

Although not based on any of the aforementioned black men who were killed by police, The Hate U Give is one of the very few films in the last five years that have confronted the subject directly and with the kind of intense emotion that will leave a lasting impression. In 2013, Fruitvale Station — with a compassionate script and direction by Ryan Coogler (Black Panther) — told the true story of 22-year-old unarmed black man Oscar Grant, who was shot dead by an Oakland police officer four years prior. Another film on the topic, Monsters and Men, will hopefully do the same later this year.

Adapted from author Angie Thomas’ novel of the same name, The Hate U Give is a gut-wrenching cinematic wake-up call to an American society pleading with its citizens to stop the cycle of violence that has spread across generations. Taking the lead as the narrative’s reluctant social-justice warrior is Starr Carter (Amandla Stenberg in a dramatic breakout role), a black teenager who witnesses the death of her childhood friend Khalil (Algee Smith) by a police officer during a routine traffic stop.

Starr’s character arc and what Stenberg is able to do with it is noteworthy as we watch her evolve from a terrified high school student trying to understand who she is (her private school personality isn’t the same one she conveys at home) to a willing participant who slowly finds her voice through the pain, fear and indignation she has experienced her entire life.

While it would have been more constructive for the script to have given the cop characters a nuanced purpose (they’re reduced to one-dimensional villains), The Hate U Give isn’t apologizing for any of its choices. Thomas’ frustration radiates off the page and screen, and Starr is the ideal storyteller for that outrage. The Hate U Give is a primal scream.

F

irst released in 2014, Houston Rap Tapes is an insightful journey through the history — largely told by those who have been firsthand witnesses and/or important participants — of the vibrant and influential HTX hip-hop scene. It features oral histories and interviews with folks like Bun B., Willie D., Paul Wall, Z-Ro, Big Mike, DJ DMD, K-Rino, Salih Williams, Lil’ Troy and more.

Written by veteran music writer and hiphop scholar Lance Scott Walker, the book is a kind of primary source companion to Houston Rap, a collaboration between Walker and photographer Peter Beste that focused on Beste’s phenomenal photographic documentation of the scene.

Rap Tapes also benefits massively from Beste’s contributions, though taking a more comprehensive approach to storytelling, featuring full interviews, anecdotes, and other tidbits woven throughout Walker’s fine reporting work.

It’s remarkable, really, how thorough and perceptive each of these guys is in their own right, and even more special how well each’s work supplements the other’s.

This month The University of Texas Press has released a definitive version of the book, entitled Houston Rap Tapes: An Oral History of Bayou City Hip-Hop. This edition, some 80 pages longer than the first, features even more of Walker’s interview work — with the likes of Scarface, Slim Thug, Lez Moné, B L A C K I E, Lil’ Keke, Sire Jukebox (of the original Ghetto Boys) and more — and new photographs from Beste to boot.

New Jersey indie rock/punk trio Screaming Females – which, incidentally, would make a great name for the biography of a certain recently appointed Supreme Court Justice – has honed and refined its sound over the course of seven LPs and countless shows. On its first several albums, the group explored an

everything-including-the-kitchen-sink sound, adorning its energetic punk core with everything from swing to pop, from experimental rock to an arty adaptation of alternative rock. On its past few albums, however, Screaming Females has distilled the best parts of its sound into a powerful concentrate. It’s clutter-free and far from the pitfalls of even the most interesting and engaging minimalism. In fact, for our money, the band’s most recent album, All at Once, out earlier this year, is the best thing it’s ever done. Fans and those for whom the above description sounds tempting can catch the notoriously kinetic live act this week.

Shooter Jennings is a throwback to a time when outlaw country artists were fiercely independent, nobly authentic and called bullshit where they saw it. Here’s a dude who shoots straight and ain’t buying into your tired, prudish, ass-backward tropes that peg country musicians as champions of the willfully ignorant masses.

The son of country music royalty Waylon Jennings and Jessi Colter, Shooter has been putting out his own honest, adventurous and gritty music, first with his rock band Stargunn and then under his own name, since 2000. His sound ranges from swampy southern rock with psychedelic forays to hardcore outlaw country. He is inventive and has his own distinct voice within that sonic spectrum. Sort of electronic pop with enough “indie” textures and dynamic to avoid sliding fully into bubble-gum pop.

San Francisco’s Deafheaven will ride into town this Tuesday on a squall of feedback. The band whose music draws comparisons to black metal, shoegaze

and post-rock – yet somehow manages to sound distinct from all three – is touring behind a new album that may rank as its most ambitious yet. Ordinary Corrupt Human Love, named for a line in a Graham Greene novel, sounds at once intimate and bulldozing. In the course of a single song, the band can sway between stark piano-laced balladry and Dinosaur Jr.-ish hooks before exploding into life-is-pain shrieks over a hellstorm of metallic guitar. While that idiosyncratic approach may leave some listeners scratching their heads, it’s won Deafheaven over to a legion of critics and regularly landed it on magazines’ best-of-the-year lists. It’s also easy to understand how the full impact of the group’s shifting dynamics may be best appreciated live. I have a secret: For the past three months, I’ve been attending a local Jacks club (a men-only masturbation event). As someone recovering from sexual abuse, I find the party to be safe, therapeutic, and just sexy fun. I feel like I need this! Unfortunately, I spotted one of my employees at last week’s event.

Although I’m openly gay at my workplace, being naked, erect and sexual in the same room as my employee felt wrong. I freaked out, packed up and departed without him seeing me (I hope). I’m his manager at work, and I feel that being sexual around him could damage our professional relationship. It could even have dangerous HR consequences. I realize he has every right to attend Jacks, as much right as me, but I wish he weren’t there. I want to continue attending Jacks, but what if he’s there again? Frankly, I’m terrified to discuss the topic with him. Help!

Just A Cock Kraving Safety “I hate to say it, but now that JACKS knows his employee attends these events, he really has to stop going,” said Alison Green, the management consultant behind the popular Ask a Manager advice column (askamanager.org) and the author of Ask a Manager: How to Navigate Clueless Colleagues, Lunch-Stealing Bosses, and the Rest of Your Life at Work.

And why do you have to stop going to your beloved JO club?

“In an employment relationship where he’s in a position of power,” said Green, “JACKS has a responsibility to avoid any remotely sexual situation with an employee.”

Green also strongly advises against pulling your employee aside and working out some sort of shared custody agreement – you get Jacks to yourself every other week – because initiating a conversation with a subordinate about when and where he likes to jack off would be a bad idea. She also doesn’t think you can just keep going in the hopes that your employee won’t be back.

“If he continues to attend and it got back to anyone at their workplace, it would be really damaging to his reputation – not the fact that he was at the event to begin with, but the fact that he continued to attend knowing an employee was also participating,” said Green. “It would call his professional judgment into question, and it’s highly likely that HR would freak out about the potential legal liability that arises when you have a manager and a subordinate in a sexual context together.”

It seems crazy unfair to me that you should have to stop going to parties you not only enjoy, JACKS, but that have aided in your recovery. And Green agrees – it isn’t fair – but with great power (management) comes great responsibility (avoiding places where your employees are known to jack off).

“It’s never going to feel fair to have to drop out of a private, out-of-work activity just because of your job,” said Green. “I’m hoping it’s possible for JACKS to find a different club in a neighboring town. Or he could start his own club and offer a safe haven for other managers hiding out from potential run-ins with employees – Jacks for Middle Managers or something!”

While I had Green’s attention, I asked her about other sorts of gay social events that might toss a manager and an employee into a sexual context – think of the thousands of men who attended the Folsom Street Fair in San Francisco last month. Gay men (and others) walk around in various states of undress or dress up, and a lot of flirting, groping and more goes down.

Should gay men in management have to skip events like Folsom lest they run into men they supervise?

“Public events are different from private clubs,” said Green. “A private club is more intimate, and a public event is, well, public.

And it’s not reasonable or practical to expect managers to entirely curtail their social lives or never attend a public event.

But a private club that’s organized specifically and primarily for sexual activity is in a different category.”

However, gay managers who run into employees at events like Folsom or circuit parties shouldn’t ogle, hit on or photograph their employees.

“If someone who reports to you is in a sexual situation,” said Green, “you should keep moving and give them as much space as you reasonably can.”

I’m going to give myself the last word here: You’ve been attending that JO club for months and saw your employee there only once, JACKS, so I think you can risk going back at least one more time. I would hate to see you deprived of release (and see your recovery set back!) if your employee was there only that one time.
