THEATER IN THE ROUND Here’s why Abbott’s school safety discussion was little more than show SANFORD NOWLIN

To Rep. Lloyd Doggett, Governor Greg Abbott’s recently completed roundtable on school safety had a familiar ring. It reminded him of President Trump’s “listening session” earlier this year with the survivors of the Parkland, Fla., school shooting.

Trump’s session provided a top-of-thefold photo op, but it only resulted in a single concrete effort to rein in access to guns — a ban on bump stocks — and that was dropped soon after the National Rifle Association cranked up pressure on lawmakers.

“Greg Abbott has taken the Trump approach, which is to convene some people, appoint a committee and hope the whole thing goes away,” said Doggett, a San Antonio-Austin Democrat who participated in the 2016 pro-gun control sit-in on the House floor.

Abbott announced his three-day roundtable last Monday in response to the 10-fatality shooting at Santa Fe High School on May 18. That slaughter came a few months after the mass shooting at a Baptist church in Sutherland Springs, near San Antonio.

The Republican governor’s sessions were largely closed to the media, but he did share a list of ideas he planned to introduce. Some sounded reasonable, even executable — better training for school personnel, say, or better coordination between schools and law enforcement. But absent — surprise, surprise — were any suggestions that curbing the availability of guns just might decrease gun violence. Off the list, apparently, were 8

universal background checks or banning assault weapons such as the one that killed 26 people in Sutherland Springs.

Here are four reasons Doggett and others think Abbott’s roundtable is better described as political theater in the round.

Abbott’s beholden to the NRA. Abbott was elected to office with the National Rifle Association’s endorsement, and he enjoys a 100 percent approval rating from the organization. Earlier this month, when he spoke at its annual convention in Dallas, he bragged about his starring role in making Texas an open-carry state and allowing students to pack firearms on public university campuses. “The answer (to gun violence) is to strengthen Second Amendment rights for law-abiding citizens of the United States of America,” he told the group (to thunderous applause, most likely). There are two reasons why politicians fear the NRA. One is money — according to the Washington Post, members of Texas’ congressional delegation alone have received nearly $428,000 in NRA donations since 1998 — and the other is votes, which the group brings out by mobilizing its true believers. Need we remind you that Abbott faces reelection in November?

Abbott’s tied his rep to guns.

Abbott’s staked an enormous amount of political capital on being one of the country’s

rootin’-est, tootin’-est, six-gun-shootin’-est pro-Second Amendment politicos. His Twitter feed is chock full of pandering to the you-can-take-my-gun-when-you-pry-itfrom-my-cold-dead-hands crowd. After all, this is the guy who in 2015 said, “I will sign whatever legislation reaches my desk that expands Second Amendment rights in Texas.”

At the press conference after the Santa Fe shooting, a somber Abbott seemed to strike a less-strident tone, but listen closely and you’ll detect a bait and switch. He told the press he’d “speed up” background checks in response to recent tragedies, but that’s not the same as pushing for universal background checks or even stronger background checks. “What we heard was a common deflection tactic,” said Kyleanne Hunter, vice president of programs for the Brady Campaign and Center to Prevent Gun Violence. “But in this political and cultural environment, citizens are getting savvy enough to see it for a deflection tactic.”

Texas in 2015, the latest data available from the Census Bureau, was 16 percent lower than in 2008, according to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. That means Texas had the sixth-biggest decline in state education funding during that period. The impact of such deep cuts isn’t lost on San Antonio state Rep. Diego Bernal. The Democrat ticked off a number of recent bills — including his own — that would have hired more public-school counselors but were ultimately shut down in the GOP-controlled lege. “This state’s been divesting in public education for more than a decade,” Bernal said. “It’s had a real blind eye to this need, and I don’t see that changing.”

While Abbott promised a robust and wide-ranging discussion at his roundtable, it certainly wasn’t an inclusive one. City Manager Sheryl Sculley deserves some of the blame for the damaging city charter amendments that the fire union is forcing onto the November ballot.

True, she didn’t cook up the amendments. She didn’t collect signatures to put them to a public vote. And she didn’t talk about how these measures would put power back in the hands of the little guy – though what they would really do is weaken city government. That’s all been the San Antonio Professional Firefighters Association’s doing.

In fact, these charter proposals, each in its own way, cut against what Sculley represents – a strong, high-performing chief executive for city operations.

But Sculley has contributed to this mess all the same. She helped create the poisonous political environment out of which these amendments have grown.

Sculley took a hardline on the fire union’s evergreen clause, which keeps firefighters’ labor contract in force for 10 years after its expiration. The city sued the fire and police unions in state court in November 2014, two months after the firefighters’ contract expired, and she’s never shown even a hint of willingness to reconsider.

Three mayors – Julián Castro, Ivy Taylor and Ron Nirenberg – have followed her lead in sticking to this legal strategy.

So far, two lower courts have sided against the city. It’s staking everything on the conservative Texas Supreme Court hearing the city’s appeal later this year and striking down the union’s evergreen clause. As Councilman Greg Brockhouse – Sculley’s No. 1 critic – recently revealed, the city has spent nearly $1.2 million in taxpayer dollars on what has been a courtroom loser up to this point.

The city’s legal argument is that the evergreen clause drives up costs for the city, in effect creating a public debt and violating the Texas constitution. The dollars-and-cents argument is that spending on firefighters’ rich compensation package will eat up too much of the city’s general fund, crowding out other basic services such as street repairs, parks and libraries.

with. By the time the city went to court, union leaders had already successfully battled the downtown streetcar project and were ginning up attacks on Sculley.

Firefighters viewed her decision to turn to the legal system to cut the heart out of their city council-approved contract as a betrayal. Sculley’s and the city’s rigidity on the lawsuit further radicalized the union, which escalated its attacks on Sculley.

The city, for its part, engaged in a shadow war on the union and its president, Chris Steele, through the news media.

Sculley utterly rejects this take on the city’s struggle with the fire union. The following is her statement to the Current in its entirety.

“The fire union has tried to defeat mayors and council members and to get me fired – all unsuccessfully.

“The City has nothing to lose with the Evergreen lawsuit, while the union has everything to lose. If the Texas Supreme Court schedules oral arguments and rules in our favor, the union will have no contract and no choice but to come to the table motivated to negotiate. If the City loses, we have what we have now: a 10-year evergreen clause that continues the union’s unsustainable benefits.

“We’ve had the courage to address an issue that was kicked down the road for more than 25 years, and predictably, the union has followed a script: find an enemy and keep them in their crosshairs. The unions have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to disparage me, yet I continue to have the City Council’s support to do what is in the best interest of the taxpayers.”

A couple of things come to mind when I read this – drawn-out trench warfare and the thought that this fight has become far too personal. On that last point, I’m in agreement with Brockhouse, who worked as a paid political consultant for the police and fire unions before winning election last year in District 6.

“I think it’s completely personal with the city manager – but it’s not about her,” said Brockhouse, who self-identifies as the fire union’s “biggest supporter.” He then took it a little farther: “You remove Sculley from the equation, and (a new

labor agreement) gets done in 90 days.”

The union also has taken the fight, and waged it, too personally. Its three lousy charter proposals are the among the results. Reminder: the city clerk certified two weeks ago that the firefighters have all the signatures they need to get the measures on the ballot next fall.

Not surprisingly, one would require the city to take labor-contract disputes to arbitration instead of court.

Another would make it easier to put city ordinances to a public referendum. The third would cap how much the city managers who follow Sculley can earn, and force them to step down after eight years.

That last one is a textbook example of taking the fight too personally.

“These petitions didn’t come out of nowhere. This has been building since 2013,” said Brockhouse, who opposes the proposal dealing with the city manager position, but supports the other two. “I’m surprised (union leaders) waited as long as they did.”

City leaders blew an opportunity to forestall this charter vote by bargaining with the union over the evergreen lawsuit.

It’s probably too late, but maybe, just maybe, there’s a little hope left.

City council has until August 20 to put the three charter proposals on the ballot. If the combatants could reach a deal on the evergreen lawsuit – as in, the city drops it – maybe the city and union could settle on ballot language so bad nobody in their right mind would vote for it. A few City Hall insiders have floated this idea.

Wait. Apologies for that momentary lapse into fantasy.

A compromise like that would require at least a whisper of goodwill. But for four years now, there’s only been shouting.

HEARST HAVOC Express-News' owner continues slashing newsroom jobs SANFORD NOWLIN

Hearst Corp., the owner of the San Antonio ExpressNews, cut deeper into the daily’s newsroom, laying off 14 seasoned journalists last week, according to people familiar with the job cuts.

The layoffs follow the departure of Editor-in-Chief Mike Leary, who retired two weeks ago, and Managing Editor Jamie Stockwell, who recently was hired as the New York Times’ deputy national editor.

Attempts to contact ExpressNews Publisher Susan Lynch Pape were unsuccessful. So were attempts to reach Vernon Loeb, the paper›s interim editorial chief and current managing editor of the Houston Chronicle, Hearst’s largest Texas newspaper holding.

The job cuts aren’t the first at the Express-News and certainly are in character with the deep cuts at daily papers around the country, which have suffered as readers and ad dollars flee to online sources. The ExpressNews’ biggest bloodletting came in 2009, when it slashed 75 positions, or about a third of the newsroom. At least one smaller cut followed.

While several ExpressNews employees said to be caught in the layoff declined comment to the Current, some have taken to social media to discuss the cuts.

Longtime reporter Zeke MacCormack tweeted that he and “several other” longtime Express-News employees had been laid off and thanked his readers and sources.

There’s long been industry (and newsroom) speculation that Hearst, which owns a couple dozen daily papers, would look for ways to consolidate its Texas operations, especially the ExpressNews and Chronicle.

In March, E-N publisher Pape emailed employees to let them know that Houston Texas Tribune CEO Evan Smith Chronicle Editor-in-Chief Nancy Barnes tweeted praise to veteran Express-News would oversee editorial for all of Hearst›s Austin Bureau Chief Peggy Fikac, who Texas newspaper properties and Expresshe said is “part of the involuntary exodus” News Executive Digital Media Producer from the paper.

Cory Heikkila would oversee web content from a post in Houston.

And with Loeb’s recent arrival in the Alamo City as interim editor, the Houston connection has grown even stronger.

In a January letter to employees, Hearst CEO Steven R. Swartz painted a relatively rosy picture of the privately-held company’s performance. Newspapers would have recorded its sixth straight year of profit gains, he wrote.

The thinning of the San Antonio ranks grabbed the attention of former Mayor and Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Julián Castro, who tweeted his disgust.

“Ok, so for the second time I’ve been laid off from the Expre-News [sic],” editorial assistant Mary Heidebrink posted on Facebook. “Anyone know of someone hiring an obit writer? Seriously, any and all networking help is appreciated.”

Loeb responded to Castro, tweeting that the cuts, while difficult, “didn’t gut the newsroom.” But Castro wanted more proof.

Loeb’s response to that call for transparency was anything but.

Whatever Heart’s ultimate corporate strategy for the layoffs, they come as a surprise, since many news organizations have adapted to running with leaner operations, said Robert Huesca, a Trinity University communications professor.

“It seems like a lot of jobs to be eliminating,” he said. “I thought that newspaper staff sizes might have stabilized at this point, but it’s disappointing to see that the fiscal issues continue.”

For the paper’s staff, especially those who endured the 2009 massacre, the cuts have evoked a devastatingly familiar sensation.

“People are in shell shock,” said a person familiar with the current environment in the Express-News newsroom. "It›s like, ‹Oh, no. Not again.'"

The Southwest School of Art, as it is wont to do, will celebrate the opening of three concurrent exhibitions by local artists on Thursday. Photographer and Más Rudas collective veteran Mari Hernandez, who received the Joan Mitchell Foundation Emerging Artist Grant in 2017, will present her exhibit entitled “What Remains,” a photographic and self-portrait-based exploration of identity (and its performance) and personal versus historical memory. Through thoughtfully staged self-portraits Hernandez traces, unpacks and creates narratives that allow for important reflection on issues surrounding “the staging of identity, gender, and action.” Xavier Gilmore, for his part, offers up his solo exhibition “ASTROBLACK,” which incorporates sound, images, video manipulation and text in its quest to illuminate the “nature of self and knowledge by creative means” and glean insight “into the continuous transformation, transfer and refinement of ideas and movements in our culture.” The third exhibit opening this week is James Smolleck’s “Transmissions from the Blue Egg,” which borrows elements from mythology, numerology, occult science and sacred geometry, and, through collage, drawing and painting, functions as an excavation of the artist’s own identity via free association. The results of this alchemical pursuit are bound THU to be uniquely absorbed by each viewer, highlighting the infinite nature of the material (or at least the mining of the material) in the collective unconscious. ‘Of Bombs and Men’ In a statement posted on her website, Austrian-born ceramicist Verena Gaudy counts herself among “the first generation of schoolchildren to be taught about [her] country’s horrific involvement in the Third Reich.” Born in 1975, living in San Antonio since 2015 and currently an MFA candidate at UTSA, Gaudy has drawn from the guilt she associates with her homeland to create conceptual works that explore THU-FRI human behavior and challenge the very concept of war. Whether you are a diehard fan of Houston-born, University of Texas-educated auteur Wes Anderson or have been waiting for the right time to give his impressive and quirky body of work some attention, Slab Cinema has got the goods for you this summer. For Wes Fest, a summer-long celebration of Anderson’s work, Slab Cinema and partners will offer up free screenings of all of the writer/director’s films at choice locations around town. Appropriately enough, though the films won’t be shown in chronological order of release, the very first screening in the series is of Anderson’s debut Bottle Rocket. The movie, which stars Owen Wilson, Luke Wilson and James Caan, is an off-kilter crime comedy that finds the main protagonist Dignan (played by Owen Wilson) leading his conspirators on a series of absurd adventures. The film is in turns understated and over the top, beautifully meticulous in its set design, dialogue, and score (as fans have come to expect form Anderson). Often slept on, Bottle Rocket is nevertheless the film that started it all for the now-beloved director and contains all the zany/obsessive hallmarks that viewers have come to cherish. This 1985 comedy might only contain 20 seconds of footage actually shot in San Antonio (the rest was filmed in California), but with so much of the movie set in the Alamo City, it has become a staple in local cinematic history and a film San Antonians like to call their own. As part of their Get Reel film series and in celebration of San Antonio’s 300th anniversary, the McNay will screen the Tim Burton-directed movie al fresco for fans of all ages. Whether you’re someone who can repeat Large Marge’s scary, big-rig story wordfor-word or are someone who doesn’t know the name Francis Buxton (“Pee-wee, listen to reason!”), there’s never not a good time to watch Big Adventure. The DoSeum, in its massive yet inviting, state-of-the-art facility, a veritable wonderland for kids and adults alike, SPECIAL is forward-thinking brilliance from the building design to the thoughtfully envisioned, carefully executed exhibits EVENT that encourage learning through play. While the focus of The DoSeum is, in general, all about the future — its stated vision includes a call to “develop innovative thinkers capable of meeting the challenges of the 21st century” — this weekend marks the opening of the museum’s most future-forward exhibition yet: “Dream Tomorrow Today,” which will run through January 2019. The DoSeum’s answer to the Tricentennial, this dynamic and multi-faceted exhibition encourages kids (even grown kids) to visualize their futures and the future of their city in a variety of forms. Throughout the exhibit, visitors are invited to design future cities, ponder and shape community values, role play for careers of the future, and more.

02 From the early 1980s to the early 1990s, long before Kanye showed mofos how to be heartbroken and heroic at the same time with his classic 2008 album 808s and Heartbreak, freestyle music brought slick love sickness to the masses. Super popular in urban areas across the country, San Anto absolutely included, freestyle tracks were saccharine electronic joints with knockin’ percussion and swelling synths. Of course, despite having fallen from mainstream popularity rather quickly, the style still exists and there’s new freestyle music being made, but it’s the genre’s originators that still enjoy cult followings. Are you among those freestyle devotees in 2018? Whether you answer that question in the affirmative or the above descriptions have made you curious, this weekend’s Freestyle Explosion is the place to be. The Day the Earth Stood Still Klaatu Borada Nikto! That’s probably cinema’s most famous line in an extraterrestrial tongue, and it was burned into many an impressionable brain from the 1950s onward. The source: The Day the Earth Stood Still, in which handsome spaceman Klaatu (Michael Rennie) lands his flying saucer on Earth, stays with a local widow (Patricia Neal), makes a point by causing the brief cessation of all electricity, and delivers a message to Earth’s leaders that if they don’t learn to make nice, they’ll be obliterated by a superior power who won’t stand for our shenanigans. This 1951 hit marked the first time a major Hollywood studio spent A-level money on science fiction that delivered a serious political message, and it belongs to that decade’s burgeoning affair with Cold War paranoia in the atomic age. Director Robert Wise orchestrates spectacle, suspense, speeches and a story with a little boy and a big gleaming robot, while Bernard Herrmann’s soundtrack of spine-tingling theremin sounds defined sci-fi ambience. Before attorney Edward Hall was disbarred and sentenced for illicit behavior in the Harris County Criminal Justice Center’s evidence room, he had built an impressive trial record. He thought he was done paying the price – two years of a three-year prison term and the loss of his law license.

In Against the Law: A Courtroom Drama, Bexar County assistant district attorney and author Jay Brandon illustrates a trial and its myriad circumstances: the lawyer-judge relationship, the influence of police officers’ suggestive questions on witnesses’ ever-changing memories, and the rhetorical techniques of both the prosecution and the defense.

Edward, unlicensed and a bit rusty, is up to try the most important trial of his life: defending his sister, Dr. Amy Shilling, a suspect in the murder of her husband Dr. Paul Shilling. In Edward’s estimation, however, unanswered questions about infidelity and professional rivalry cause him

to doubt that innocence.

Brandon’s third-person narration is an incredibly nuanced dissection of the theater of trial, where a witness’ facial expression becomes a chess move for the opposing side, and an attorney’s objections are successively destroyed like discs in skeet shooting. Edward knows that despite who or what officers initially find at a murder scene, “the prime goal of criminal defense [is] changing the narrative.”

“They settle like flies on the closest piece of sandwich and don’t go looking for something else,” says Amy when she realizes the similarities between the practices of medicine and law enforcement. In each case, they “take the easiest diagnosis (read suspect and motive) and move on.” Amy’s

story of her supposed reconciliation with her husband has holes though, and if she is covering up any facts, it could tip the trial.

Edward’s father, Dr. Marshall Hall, deludes himself into believing that having saved the family members of high-ranking officials creates a quid pro quo for releasing his daughter.

He pressures Edward to force investigators to find the real murderer, just as when he treated the police captain’s mother: “I did further tests and kept looking into her case, after another doctor had made a diagnosis that turned out to be disastrously wrong.

Further investigation saved her life.”

Edward’s past with then trial lawyer and now Judge Cynthia Miles skews his perception and the reader’s imagination. When prosecuting attorney

David Galindo asks to introduce video evidence so damaging that Edward believes it will dismantle his entire defense, Judge Miles defers her decision on whether to allow it. Could it be the dreaded poison of power called black-robe fever, or could it be an old gripe between the two?

With attention to the tilt of a head or elusive eyes in a courtroom, Brandon’s description challenges the visual cues of any camera shots in the television series to which many are addicted: Netflix’s Seven Seconds, HBO’s The Night of, or AMC’s Better Call Saul. In each of these courtroom dramas, the defense, like Edward Hall here, tries unsuccessfully to convince the suspect to take a plea bargain because the search for the real murderer is over: “Each case gets only one solution, at least from the police department’s point of view. It’s a court case now, […] not a police one.”

Familiar franchises hitting movie theaters over the next three months

The First Purge So, it’s technically a prequel to the dystopian film series, which started in 2013 with the original The Purge and continued with 2014’s The Purge: Anarchy and 2016’s The Purge: Election Year.

In this new installment, audiences get to see how the violent tradition, the legalization of crime once a year for 12 hours, started.

Although last summer was considered one of the least profitable at the box office in the last decade, movie studios still pulled in $3.8 billion.

That’s mostly because sequels, like Spider-Man: Homecoming and Despicable Me 3, saw their built-in fanbases remain loyal to the franchises. Last summer, seven of the top 10 grossing movies were, in fact, sequels. This summer, sequels will be crowding into theaters once again. Here’s a look at the 10 that are opening in San Antonio from June to August.

Ant-Man and the Wasp Marvel superhero Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) may not have gotten any screen time in Avengers: Infinity War, but his own sequel should make up for it. Actually, Rudd shares the movie title with actress Evangeline Lilly, who reprises her role as Hope van Dyne. This time, she’ll get to wear her Wasp suit, which was left to her by her late mother. Opens July 6.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again In the sequel to the 2008 film, which is based on the musical of the same name, the entire cast is back, including Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Colin Firth and Pierce Brosnan. Pregnant with her first child, Sophie (Seyfried) is now running her mother’s villa and learning more about her past. She gets a surprise when her grandmother Ruby (Cher) comes for a visit. Opens July 20.

Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation Adam Sandler returns to voice Count Dracula in the animated sequel, which also invites Selena Gomez, Andy Samberg, Kevin James and Steve Buscemi back to play.

The “Drac Pack” decide to take a vacation on a luxury cruise ship. Also on board: Van Helsing (Jim Gaffigan) and his great-granddaughter Erika (Kathryn Hahn) who are set on destroying the Count. Opens July 13.

The Equalizer 2 No one was really demanding an Equalizer sequel, but Denzel Washington is back, so it looks like he’s game to reprise his role as retired CIA black ops operative Robert McCall. In this round, Robert seeks revenge for the murder of his CIA agent friend Susan (Melissa Leo). Opens July 20.

Mission: Impossible – Fallout At the age of 55, Tom Cruise isn’t slowing down in the least bit. He reprises his role as Ethan Hunt for the sixth time since the original action film debuted in 1996. Hunt is on a new assignment, of course, but details on the film are limited. >South BBQ & Kitchen opened May 23, just in time for Memorial Day. Under Andrew Samia (of Crazy Carl’s food truck and Dignowity Meats on the city’s East Side), South BBQ & Kitchen offers meats by the pound, including brisket, St. Louis spare ribs, pulled pork and chicken quarters; a sandwich or two; and a selection of pickled items and sides, namely frijoles a la charra and Spanish-style rice. Housemade sausage will make its way to the menu in the coming month or so.

The space, anchored by a massive pit, will seat 30 to 40 comfortably, with outdoor seating still in the works. Prices will be comparable to area barbecue shops.

Samia is flanked by kitchen manager Manuel Nava, formerly of Arcade Midtown Kitchen and Grayze, who’s heading up the briny accoutrement and a few surprises like roasted green onions.

For the time being, the restaurant will be BYOB while they wait for a beer and wine license. Samia said the offerings will be less craft-focused than at Dignowity Meats, and instead will feature “approachable crowd pleasers.”

The South BBQ & Kitchen will open Wednesdays through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

More breakfast, more coffee, more juice Moshe’s Opens for Breakfast

>Shakshuka, a dish of eggs poached in a sauce of tomatoes, chili peppers and onions, is on the menu at Moshe’s Golden Falafel as of this week.

It’s all part of a new breakfast menu chef Andrew Weissman is testing out this summer that includes Israeli faves such as labneh with fresh fruit and granola; housemade French toast with passed egg, red onions, avocado and garlic labneh; and an Isreali breakfast of warm hummus, Israeli salad, savory labneh, baba ganoush and fresh pita.

Prices range from $9 to $15.

The menu rounds out with French pastries, juices and French press and espresso-based drinks. Pour-over coffee is also in the works.

“I wanted to offer something you’re not likely to see anywhere in town,” Weissman said.

The breakfast menu is available from 7 to 10:30 a.m.

Monday through Saturday at least through the summer, but

Weissman hinted at more items making their way through the menu, including halloumi (a Greek semi-soft cheese), chickpeas and salads in the coming weeks.

While lunch is still Moshe’s bread and butter (or hummus and pita in this case), chef is also toying with the idea of offering a late-night menu Friday and Saturday, so long as the area supports it.

Revolución Opens Downtown Location

>It’s soft opening time for Revolucion Coffee + Juice’s downtown location on Houston Street.

The shop, opened in the former home of Moshe’s Golden Falafel, is a smaller satellite location of the Broadway flagship. Customers will find espresso drinks, juices, “not milks,” smoothies, acai bowls, and grab-and-go salads and sandwiches by chef Mike Hernandez.

Berry to Bean Opens

>San Antonio should be at its most productive now that we have yet another coffeehouse on Broadway.

Open as of last Thursday across from the Witte Museum, Berry to Bean Coffee House features a menu of espresso drinks, juices and smoothies, though the shop was still blenderless as of Monday morning.

Owner Kam Mehta describes it this way: “Berry to Bean Coffeehouse is a locally owned retailer of hot and cold beverages and pastries that provides patrons with healthier options and an environment that promotes sense of community.” That includes vegan muffins and doughnuts from Cake Thieves Bakery.

Berry to Bean, which joins CommonWealth Coffeehouse & Bakery, Starbucks, Mila, Fremonti Coffee, Brown Coffee and Rosella on Jones, is open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.

This is when restaurants must get inventive with their accessibility. Even areas like the Pearl have to beef up their programming to draw crowds. (The Pearl’s Olé, a “summerlong program celebrating San Antonio’s Spanish heritage in commemoration of the city’s 300th anniversary,” kicks off June 15 with happenings such as Tapas Tuesday and Gin and Tonic Thursdays). Charcuterie Week, the week organized by chef Mike Sohocki to celebrate all things meaty and cured, is regularly held during the last week of

It all started back in April with business owners holding their breath as the Spurs barely eked out a No. 7 standing for the 2018 playoffs.

The team faced Steph Curry and Golden State for five hard-fought games, and the season ended on April 24.

No, this isn’t Kawhi Leonard’s fault, though he’d be easy enough to blame.

Since Tim Duncan’s departure and the Spurs’ early playoff exits, San Antonio businesses have had to deal with longer summers than they'd been used to as far as sales.

Historically, business is slower in the heat of summer, and the Spurs play a part in this economy. San Antonians aren’t donning their off-brand T-shirts or NBA-licensed jerseys to fill sports bars, chill patios or whatever their favorite watering hole may be.

This weekend kicks off a slow burn for both restaurants and bars as kids leave school, and CPS bills rocket and seasonal holidays (July 4, Memorial Day) could mean a sales drop of up to 20 percent for some restaurants, according to Upserve, a restaurant point-of-sale company. The number of

Sunshine Bakery reopens next week with familiar management

There will be new faces behind the counter at Sunshine Bakery as it reopens on the city’s East Side.

But instead of new owners razing the building, the 40-year-old bakery will return from its yearlong hiatus with new management.

Cousins Kayla Matta and Crisaeus Valadez, granddaughters of original owner Juan Valadez, are reopening Sunshine Bakery on June 2 with a block party from noon to 5 p.m.

Matta, owner of Pan Dulce Gallery, will helm the kitchen and is using her training in the service industry to make classic panadería goodies such as cuernitos, conchas, sugar cookies and marranitos. New additions will include churros, mini chocoflans, and macarons, but Matta’s also adding vegan options

For her part, Valadez, a interior design student, is outfitting the shop’s interiors and handling front-of-house operations.

The re-opening block party will feature DJ sets by Deadwax Collective, GSK Cumbia and DJ San Quilmas, along with vendors Krstipop, St. Sucia, Mothership Handmades, Tejana in Space, Collective Cosmica, Mauro de la

Tierra and Natazianatazia.

The pair is taking over the reins after their grandfather retired last May. He spends his time on his ranch with his animals, enjoying the quiet, but the cousins say he’s “low-key” excited about the opening.

Preserving his legacy was just one of the reasons they decided to reopen the bakery.

“We love the neighborhood and didn’t want to see it go away with some big company buying the building and tearing it down,” Matta said. “We wanted to help preserve the culture as much as we can.”

$6 bites and drinks make for a very happy hour at The Maverick

Happy hours aren’t all that hard to find in Southtown.

The area is chock-full of great restaurants and solid bars, and happy hour hounds jonesing for a bite and a tipple need to simply explore their options.

And when the super group made up of Peter Selig, Miguel Ardid, sommelier Joshua Thomas and chef Chris Carlson opened The Maverick, at least this writer hoped for an immediate happy hour.

No such luck.

Staffing a 220-seat restaurant that size requires finesse and some A-plus servers, so we had to wait three months

before the first happy hour menu was shared. But the wait was mostly worth it.

Le Palm, the section of the restaurant we chose to spend our happy hour(s) in, is worth noting. The très chic outdoor space leans more Nantucket than Port Aransas, with palm fronds obscuring it from the otherwise dreary parking lot. The coastal cottage vibes continue down to the wicker-bamboo chairs. It’s a patio you’ll want to spend a few hours on.

The happy hour menu is available from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and it’s a succinct tour de Maverick that lends itself to exploring. Bites, wine and cocktails are $6, and

Shiner is priced at $3.

During our visit, the specialty cocktails featured included a Lemondrop, Pink Slip, caipirihna, Gold Rush, and a Tequila Old Fashioned. Wines, which likely change frequently because of Thomas’ extensive list of vinos, included a 2015 Pucciarella Cabernet blend and a giggle-inducing 2016 Muscadet from Forty Ounce Wines (technically, 33.8 ounces, not 40, but still).

The “Happy Bites” are worth the trip alone to Maverick.

On that Friday, we ordered the duck liver mousse, a sizable offering with a small side of greens and halved tomatoes seasoned with a light vinaigrette and paired with good, crusty bread. The salmon chips, tempura-fried thin cuts of cured fish, were a fun surprise with a bright garlic aioli. Both were rich, and decadent, a bit much for the onset of summer, but the Muscadet cut through the richness with ease.

Though not on the menu, we were talked into ordering a fun dessert of profiteroles by pastry chef Misa Holmes.

Because why shouldn’t you end a happy hour with banana goat cheese gelato, roasted banana caramel, milk chocolate hot fudge and candied peanuts?

If you didn’t get enough Big Red at the recent Big Red and Barbacoa Festival, a favorite St. Mary’s Strip bar has you covered. Rumble’s new menu boasts a drink, the Red Light District, that’s perfect for anyone craving the cream-flavored red refreshment – but who also wants to kick it up a notch.

The Red Light District, which is a combination of gin, Big Red syrup and lemon, is the perfect cocktail for sipping on a patio. The gin creates a foundation of botanicals and floral notes that contrasts nicely with the Big Red syrup, which is basically a cookeddown version of the soft drink. The lemon lightens the drink by introducing a sour element, complementing

the sugary concentrate.

Vanessa Vara, Rumble’s bar manager and Speed Rack’s Southwest Region Champion, created the drink. She wanted to develop a cocktail that would represent the culture of San Antonio and the St. Mary’s Strip. The Red Light District does a wonderful job of combining the evolving craft cocktail scene in the Alamo City with the dive bar atmosphere the Strip is known for. Grab a barbacoa taco and a Big Red cocktail on Rumble’s patio this summer.

FREE WILL ASTROLOGY by Rob Brezsny ARIES (March 21-April 19): A critic described Leonardo da Vinci’s painting the Mona Lisa as “the most visited, most written about, most sung about, most parodied work of art in the world.” It hasn’t been sold recently, but is estimated to be worth hundreds of millions of dollars. Today it’s kept in the world-renowned Louvre museum in Paris, where it’s viewed by millions of art-lovers. But for years after its creator’s death, it enjoyed little fanfare while hanging in the bathroom of the French King Francois. I’d love to see a similar evolution in your own efforts, Aries: a rise from humble placement and modest appreciation to a more interesting fate and greater approval. The astrological omens suggest that you have more power than usual to make this happen in the coming weeks and months.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): These days, many films use CGI, computer generated imagery. The technology is sophisticated and efficient. But in the early days of its use, producing such realistic fantasies was painstaking and time-intensive. For example, Steven Spielberg’s 1993 film Jurassic Park featured four minutes of CGI that required a year to create. I hope that in the coming weeks, you will summon equivalent levels of old-school tenacity and persistence and attention to detail as you devote yourself to a valuable task that you love. Your passion needs an infusion of discipline. Don’t be shy about grunting.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): On February 17, 1869, Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleyev had an appointment with a local cheese-making company to provide his expert consultation. But he never made it. A blast of inspiration overtook him soon after he awoke, and he stayed home to tend to the blessed intrusion. by Mendeleyev’s breakthrough. I doubt your epiphanies in the coming weeks will have a similar power to remake

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Marketing experts say that motivating a person to say yes to a big question is more likely if you first build momentum by asking them smaller questions to which it’s easy to say yes. I encourage you to adopt this slant for your own purposes in the coming weeks. It’s prime time to extend invitations and make requests that you’ve been waiting for the right moment to risk. People whom you need on your side will, I suspect, be more receptive than usual – and with good reasons – but you may still have to be smoothly strategic in your approach.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): I bet you’ll be offered at least one valuable gift, and possibly more. But I’m concerned that you may not recognize them for their true nature. So I’ve created an exercise to enhance your ability to identify and claim these gifts-in-disguise. Please ruminate on the following concepts: 1. a pain that can heal; 2. a shadow that illuminates; 3. an unknown or anonymous ally; 4. a secret that nurtures intimacy; 5. a power akin to underground lightning; 6. an invigorating boost disguised as tough love.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): When I was a kid attending elementary schools in the American Midwest, recess was a core part of my educational experience. For 45 minutes each day, we were excused from our studies so we could indulge in free-form play – outdoors, if the weather was nice, or else in the gymnasium. But in recent years, schools in the U.S. have shrunk the time allotted for recess.

Many schools have eliminated it altogether. Don’t they understand this is harmful to the social, emotional, and physical health of their students? In any case, Aquarius, I hope you move in the opposite direction during the coming weeks. You need more than your usual quota of time away from the grind. More fun and games, please!
