The Symphony Is Government’s Baby Now City, county task force could become symphony’s ‘permanent oversight board’

The 79-year-old San Antonio Symphony is now effectively a ward of local government.

Consider what happened at the symphony’s performance on January 6. As the ExpressNews reported, Mayor Ron Nirenberg and County Judge Nelson Wolff stood on stage at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts and soothed classical-music fans worried the 2017-2018 season would crash to a halt because of a big budget shortfall.

Not a pair of major philanthropists or civic leaders taking the stage, but politicians.

Their assurances — as well as an emergency grant of $350,000 from the county and the speededup disbursement of already approved city funding — did the trick. Their efforts gave private donors enough confidence to write checks. As a result, the symphony is well on its way to completing the season.

If you need more concrete evidence of the symphony’s ward status, you have it in the memo Nirenberg and Wolff sent to city council and commissioners court last week. In it, they announced their appointment of a task force to fix the symphony’s nagging financial problems. The panel, its eight members hand-picked by Nirenberg and Wolff, will

hire a consultant to recommend ways to set the organization straight. The city, county and a yet-to-be-identified private entity is expected to pay for the consultant.

“Upon completion of the consultants’ work, we will seek our colleagues’ support in officially establishing this committee as a permanent oversight board (!) to implement the Task Force and consultant recommendations.” (The italics and exclamation point are mine.)

There are several potential problems with local government taking a hand in the symphony’s

management. But the biggest one is philosophical.

Government just doesn’t belong behind the wheel of San Antonio’s arts and cultural life.

True, the city gives millions in bond revenue and hotel occupancy tax dollars every year to public art and arts organizations. But there’s a huge difference between publicly-funded art and publicly-managed arts organizations.

In interviews, both Nirenberg and Wolff said nothing will be decided until the task force hears from the consultant and makes its formal recommendations.

present, is the public’s voice in the future of the symphony in San Antonio,” Nirenberg said. “We can’t have a conversation about the sustainability of the symphony and forget that a bulk of that determination will be through the patrons who actually purchase tickets and go to the performance. The community support of the arts needs to be part of the calculus of how the symphony can be sustained in San Antonio.”

That’s a lot. Let’s start with the community’s support for the symphony – and the government’s.

I asked Nirenberg whether he had a problem with local tax dollars making up such a relatively high percentage of the symphony’s budget.

“I don’t because public involvement varies widely in the United States and across the world,” he said. “There are communities with top-quality symphony orchestras in other parts of the world that are entirely public entities.

I think we have to find the balance that’s right for the San Antonio community. Clearly, there is support for public art in San Antonio.”

How much public funding the symphony receives in the future, Nirenberg added, “will be part of the discussion of this task force.”

Sculley Burns a Bridge

City manager’s Hays Bridge decision undercuts residents, activists

City Manager Sheryl Sculley may have made the controversial decision to conditionally greenlight a five-story apartment complex next to the historic Hays Street Bridge, but it’s her elected boss who will feel the political heat.

Sculley’s surprise intervention into the process late last month may be the most visible test so far of Mayor Ron Nirenberg’s campaign pledge to foster more transparency and individual participation in local government. By reversing the decision of the Historic and Design Review Commission, which twice rejected the 147-unit structure, and disregarding months of resident input, her move makes a mockery of openness and civic engagement.

“I’m angry,” said Graciela Sanchez, director of the Esperanza Peace & Justice Center, who supported Nirenberg in the election. “I’m sitting on a few advisory committees for the city, and this makes me want to step away.”

Esperanza helped pull together the recent rally and vigil at the bridge, at which speakers blasted Sculley’s decision as another backroom deal driven by the business insiders. Residents of the adjacent Dignowity Hill neighborhood worry the proposed development will ruin views of the bridge, once the primary

connection between downtown and the city’s East Side. There’s also concern the influx of new, market-priced housing units will accelerate the gentrification already pushing out longtime residents.

The city manager’s decision to go against HRDC was only the third time she has done so since she took the job in November 2005, said Shanon Shea Miller, director of the city’s historic preservation office. However, she points out staff considered commission input and ultimately decided residents’ concerns could be addressed through a conditional approval.

Sculley’s letter to the developer, Mitch Meyer, only allows him to move forward on the project so long as he adjusts its height and design and ensures there’s adequate space separating it from the bridge. What’s more, the final plan also must be examined by the Dignowity Hill Architecture Review Committee and the Historic and Design Review Commission.

It’s still unclear whether Meyer, unavailable at press time, will continue with the project under those conditions.

“I don’t think any of the design input was disregarded,” Miller added.

In a statement emailed to the Current, Nirenberg said: “Now, we have an opportunity to have the productive engagement on the future of the Hays Street Bridge that actually meets the

best interest of all parties.”

But activists, some of whom have spent years working for the bridge’s redevelopment, said Nirenberg misses the point.

The city had minimal involvement in redeveloping the bridge — $2.89 million came from federal funds, and citizen donations accounted for another 20 percent of the cost. Allowing Sculley to serve as unilateral dealmaker is a dismissive smack to those who spent nearly two decades fighting for the structure’s restoration.

Hays Street Bridge advocates say they were active participants in the development process, fighting not once but twice before HRDC, and carving out time from their busy lives to build grassroots support for the structure now enjoyed by San Antonians and visitors alike.

“We followed the rules, and we were cheated,” said Marlon Davis, a bornand-raised Dignowity Hill resident who testified before the HDRC. “The outrage is real, the outrage is palpable, and it’s not going away.”

Councilman Rey Saldaña’s District 4 is nowhere near the Hays Street Bridge, but he said he felt compelled to express his disappointment to Sculley. While the conditions in her letter address design concerns, they didn’t include activists’ call to set aside a portion of the

development for affordable housing.

“The activists and residents who have come together to advocate for the bridge have not gotten a lot of traction at City Hall,” Saldaña said. “And that upsets me.”

Still, there’s a chance bridge advocates could win in court, even if they’ve been largely edged out of the review process.

The Hays Street Restoration Group, which spearheaded redevelopment of the historic structure, sued the City in 2012 over its decision to sell the land rather than develop a park. At the heart of that dispute, the City sold the donated land to Alamo Beer Co., whose owner, Eugene Simor, ultimately deeded the land to Meyer.

A Bexar County district court ruled the city didn’t comply with the original memorandum of understanding. Later, an appeals court ruled the city can’t be sued for such a breach of contract.

The dispute is now before the Texas Supreme Court, which has yet to say whether it will hear the case.

Amy Kastely, attorney for Hays Street Restoration, said she’s optimistic the Supreme Court will hear the case given the important land-use issues involved. If the justices decide in her group’s favor, the case would be heard again by an appeals court.

Regardless of how the legal wrangling plays out, activists including Esperanza’s Sanchez say they’re not done fighting. The group has urged members and residents to call council and the mayor to voice their outrage over the city manager’s intervention.

While Sculley will draw the immediate ire of activists, the political fallout is likely to sweep up the mayor and city council members, especially if it spreads to the growing number of people from across the city who view the bridge as a unique part of San Antonio’s character.

Those angry with the decision will view the approval process as part of the problem, said Christine Drennon, director of Trinity University’s urban studies program.

“The mayor prides himself for prizing transparency and public participation, but in this case, the public participation was subverted behind closed doors,” she said. “People will look at this and think their participation doesn’t matter. ‘We basically lay down in the street and they roll over us.’”

A few years ago, the best way to spot all the names on this lineup in the same place would’ve been to open the TV Guide to any primetime page at random. Veteran actors and stand-ups Cedric the Entertainer (Barbershop, The Original Kings of Comedy) Eddie Griffin (Undercover Brother, Malcolm & Eddie), D.L. Hughley (The Hughleys, The Original Kings of Comedy) and George Lopez (four different TV shows bearing some version of his name) really need no introduction to comedy fans. Their IMDB pages have more laughs than some headliners’ entire acts. Griffin, for example, played “Pope Sweet Jesus” in Norbit and an unnamed Guest at Kid’s Bachelor Party in House Party 3, both of which are hilarious just as bullet points on a resume. “Trump is after us!” comedian Jesus Sepulveda said last year on Chingo Bling’s Netflix special They Can’t Deport Us All. “Half my family’s freaking the fuck out. My dad is watching CNN every day — ‘Chinga su madre! We gotta fight back! The Trump won!’” Sepulveda and fellow Latino comedians Jerry Garcia and Jose Sarduy are combining their powers and are ready to throw some chingazos on stage at the Empire Theatre as The Undeportables, a catchy team name they should trademark now before Marvel beats them to it. The trio will share the stage for a night of humor touching on everything from immigration to the border wall.

Along with the Netflix special, Sepulveda starred last fall on the HBO Latino show Entre Nos. Garcia, who was named Best Comedian at the San Diego Comedy Festival in 2016, was also featured on the same special. Sarduy, a military veteran, starred on two seasons of Fox TV’s Laughs as a performer and host.

Before Black Panther was a $1.3 billion box office breakout, he was a mid-level Marvel Comics superhero — ranking somewhere between Spider Man and, say, Moon Knight. And a few years before he clawed his way onto the silver screen, David Liss — a San Antonio author best known for historical thrillers like The Whiskey Rebels

— was his principal writer.

After being approached by a Marvel editor who’d fanboyed over his thrillers, Liss agreed to pen some titles for the comics company. That led to a two-year (20102012) run with Black Panther: The Man Without Fear, which transported T’Challa into the urban jungle of Hell’s Kitchen. His work on the character is now compiled in Black Panther: The Man Without Fear – The Complete Collection, released in December

Liss, who recently finished the Y.A. trilogy Randoms, still works for Marvel, now creating video game content. We asked him talk about his time with Black Panther, often billed as the first black superhero.

Why does Black Panther resonate with so many people right now?

When I was working on the character, Marvel was struggling to figure out how to get him more exposure. Certainly, we couldn’t imagine that the moment would soon be upon us that he would be a household name. Of course, the film helps. But it’s also just a different cultural moment right now. In the post-Ferguson world, people want this character. There’s a cultural hunger. They’re ready for this character who represents a kind of black empowerment we haven’t seen before.

You took Black Panther out of Wakanda, the fictional African country where he’s king, and stripped him of his support system. Was that dictated

by Marvel?

It had been established by other writers in

a different story line that Black Panther reached a point where he decided to abdicate the throne. Marvel wanted to get more eyes on him by having him take over for Daredevil in Hell’s Kitchen. Matt Murdoch, the character of Daredevil, has his own crisis and he leaves, so T’Challa agrees to fill in. That’s what I was handed, and within that framework, I had the power to do what I wanted. One of the first decisions I got to make was whether to depower him: Does he get to keep his Black Panther powers? I decided to take everything — take his money, take his power. To me, the interesting thing was, here’s this guy who has all these abilities, all these resources and all this political power. If you strip all that away, what do you get? Narratively, I liked the idea of someone used to having a great deal of authority being brought to his lowest point and clawing his way back up.

How did that go over with the fans?

There are a few active comic book discussion boards and most writers stay away from them, but when I was writing Black Panther, I didn’t. I wanted to know what the fans thought and who the fans were. That’s when I discovered there was this group of really active and dedicated fans all over the world. They were from the Caribbean and Africa and all over the black diaspora. Initially, almost all of the hardcore fans were against it, because here was this figure of black empowerment who was suddenly depowered. But, later, a lot of those guys went on to speak very favorably about my run. I had all these conversations online where they said, “Marvel handed you a concept that was terrible, but we like what you did with it.” I always said, “Well, I really liked the concept, but thanks anyhow!” sacurrent.com • April 4-10, 2018 • CURRENT 17

Looking back at filmmaker Wes Anderson’s past projects, one could argue the writer/director hasn’t been kind to man’s best friend.

In 2001’s The Royal Tenenbaums, a wild-eyed Owen Wilson drives his Austin-Healey off the road and runs over the family’s beagle Buckley. Seemingly unaffected, the Tenenbaums replace the pet in a matter of minutes with a firefighter’s Dalmatian. In 2012’s Moonrise Kingdom, Anderson writes in a scene where the young protagonist’s fox terrier Snoopy gets shot in the neck with an arrow. (“Was he a good dog? Who’s to say?”)

With all the canine casualties, it’s no wonder The New Yorker wrote an article a few years ago asking, “Does Wes Anderson Hate Dogs?” Note 1: The death of these dogs has no bearing on the actual story. Both would still be great films if he had let the dogs live. Note 2: He lets Willem Dafoe kill a cat in The Grand Budapest Hotel, so go figure. It’s a question Anderson puts to rest with Isle of Dogs, the second stop-motion animated feature of his career, after 2009’s fanciful Fantastic Mr. Fox. Anderson undoubtedly matches his first outing in the genre with Isle of Dogs, a deadpan, dystopian adventure

Quite Fetching Isle of Dogs is a deadpan, whimsical animation Wes Anderson fans will lap up starring one of the most diverse cast of four-legged, animated characters since the Disney classic Lady and the Tramp. Its whimsical nature, of course, is unmistakably Anderson, so if he’s not your cup of Darjeeling tea, this won’t be either. However, fans of his idiosyncratic work will enjoy the wonderful world of wagging tails he has created with such exhaustive detail. It’s noteworthy, too, that Isle of Dogs is Anderson’s most politically-themed picture to date, although one could argue that classism and fascism are covered effectively in Rushmore and Budapest.

In Isle of Dogs, the dogs of Japan’s fictional Megasaki City are suffering from dog flu and thusly banished to an island covered in trash, so the disease won’t spread to their human masters. The first of dog exiled is Spots (Liev Schreiber), the official guard dog of the city’s sinister Mayor Kobayashi (Kunichi Nomura) and pet to Kobayashi’s 12-year-old orphaned nephew Atari (Koyu Rankin). Committed to bringing Spots home, Atari hijacks a small plane and crash-lands it on Trash Island where he is rescued by a group of deported dogs who argue about whether they should help the boy find his pup.

For his pack of alpha-male mongrels, Anderson casts his usual, talented suspects — Edward Norton as Rex, Bob Balaban as King, Bill Murray as Boss, Jeff Goldblum as Duke, and newcomer to the Anderson roster, Bryan Cranston as Chief, a stray and de facto leader who reluctantly goes on the Saving Private Ryanesque journey even though he knows it will probably mean their lives. On their way, they

meet Nutmeg (Scarlett Johansson), a former show dog whose master Tracy Walker (Greta Gerwig) heads a group of young activists to fight against the “dog-hating thugs” spouting political propaganda and trying to conceal the creation of a cure for dog flu.

As in all of Anderson’s films, the soft-spoken and dryly sarcastic comedy is not really for moviegoers with a broad sense of humor or for the narrow base of Anderson naysayers who think his distinctive style only appeals to pretentious hipster doofuses. Anderson does what he does and does it incredibly well. Part of that, obviously, is the attention he pays to every single frame of his visual composition. Not only is the handmade artistry meticulous across the board, but Anderson’s eye for choreographed randomness is second to none. Even the animated fleas that scurry across a dog’s fur are impressive. Add another award-worthy score by Alexandre Desplat and some bold decisions by Anderson when it comes to translating the Japanese language throughout the film, and Isle of Dogs is something truly special.

While it has, for whatever reason, become sort of cool to jab Anderson for his eccentric directorial choices (there are plenty of parodies online that poke fun of him and his films), it’s not something admirers should worry about, especially since even cynics would say he’s at least consistent. If that’s something everyone can agree on, those on the right side of cinematic history should add Isle of Dogs to Anderson’s growing catalog of cleverness and quirk. sacurrent.com • April 4-10, 2018 • CURRENT 29

In my third week as a columnist, I tried encouraging the general San Antonio public to eat out during the week. Essentially, Fridays, Saturdays and Sunday brunches are tasked with making up the bulk of a restaurant’s revenue, and weekdays are depressingly slow. Admittedly, the headline (“Your Favorite Restaurant Is Closing Tomorrow — And It’s Your Fault”) was a bit aggressive, and some took it quite literally.

“Stop charging $13 for a fucking sandwich if you want to stay in business.

Fine dining, my ass... it’s a fucking sandwich,” one commenter said.

Which made me wonder how often we find $13 sandwiches in town. I scoured a few menus to find something that would come close to that price tag. Sandwiches ran the delicious gamut. Station Café kept Southtowners happy with sandwiches that max out at $5.99; Zito’s keeps bringing people back with $7-$9.75 sandos; Dignowity Meats prices theirs between Night_market_Current_Ad.pdf

$6 and $9; WD Deli’s sandwiches hover between $7.50 and 8.50; Fratello’s keeps theirs between $11.49 and $12.89; at Pam’s Patio Kitchen, the sandwiches linger between $7 for a half or $12 for a whole.

In restaurants where sandwiches aren’t ordered at a counter, prices tend to crawl up slowly. Battalion, the newest restaurant in Southtown to offer lunch, serves five sizable sandwiches on their lunch menu that cap off at $10 (with a side of fries); Grayze on Grayson offers four non-burger sammies ranging from $12 for a five-cheese grilled cheese to a $15 blackened trout “po boi”; overstuffed NY deli-style sandwiches at Max & Louie’s Diner range from $11.95 to $14.95; Jason Dady offers a crabcake sandwich at Shuck Shack for $16; finally, at Esquire Tavern, chef Brooke Smith and co. offer sandwiches ranging from a $13 carnitas torta to a $17 Thanksgiving Sandwich.

Restaurant economics are a nuanced beast. Customers aren’t solely paying for the cost of the sandwich (fret not, The Big

Spoon will tackle burgers, ramen, etc., going forward) at face value. This may seem obvious, but restaurant owners have to factor in cost of goods, labor, overhead and profit.

When we compare two sandwiches priced at either end of the spectrum, in this case Station Café’s garlic roast beef and Esquire Tavern’s Thanksgiving sandwich, we’re basically comparing apples and oranges.

For Jon Rowe, who co-owns Station Café with wife Stacie, the restaurant runs like a well-oiled machine because of how it evolved. It first opened in 2006, inside a 300 square-foot space that’s “smaller than most people’s bathrooms,” Rowe says. The store at the corner of St. Mary’s and King William St. began as a pizza-by-the-slice joint, but his daily sandwich specials soon overtook the demand for pizza. As Rowe puts it, he and Stacie lucked out on its current location, which is also 10 times the size of the original, after a period of thinking

they’d have to close down and relocate entirely to make the café work.

Rowe and his small staff of 11 employees roll in at 8 a.m. and start working on sauces, all of which are made in-house, as are the bread rolls, which helps reduce costs, and cut out middlemen. Because of his small staff and their efficiency, Rowe’s been able to keep prices at Station Café down for the past five years, though that will change in the coming weeks. While apprehensive about sharing a specific date, Rowe did hint that the cost for a sandwich will increase in the coming months.

“Everything goes up every year — lease, insurance, payroll,” Rowe said.

Down the road and directly on the River Walk (which means a pricier lease), sits The Esquire Tavern, a James Beard Award semifinalist in 2017. Reopened as a craft cocktail bar and restaurant in 2012, The Esquire is known for using locally sourced ingredients and humanely raised proteins as well as helping launch San Antonio’s thriving cocktail scene.

Turkey for the Thanksgiving sammie comes from Smart Chicken, a Nebraska company that’s certified organic and certified humane. The produce hails from Bluebonnet Farms in Bellville, while some is sourced through The Truckin’ Tomato.

Chef Brooke Smith uses a software program that allows her to breakdown how much an ounce of aioli costs, as well as every other item made in her scratch kitchen.

The Thanksgiving Sandwich uses a total of six items made by as many as seven people, depending on who did what. She’s able to track costs across the board for the bar, and its sister shops, the luxurious basement bar known as Downstairs and El Mirador. Tips on designing a better bowl

Who knew sashimi-grade fish bowls would be San Antonio’s next big thing in fast-casual dining?

Poke — it rhymes with “okay” — started out as a way for Hawaiian fishermen to snack on the day’s catch. Since jumping to the U.S. mainland a few years ago, it’s become a sushi bar staple and popped up everywhere from the San Antonio’s Shuck Shack to the grab-and-go coolers at H-E-B. And since July 2017, three poke-focused restaurants are giving the dish a build-your-own approach, much like a sandwich or burrito place. Customers pick their proteins — tuna and salmon and their spiced-up versions are common choices — and servers behind the counter add rice, fresh vegetables, sauces and toppings.

But with prices around $10 for a poke bowl, it helps to make smart choices as you go down the line. Too heavy on the sauce and you end up with something gloppy and overdressed. Take a pass on unfamiliar ingredients and you may miss tastes and textures that are part of the fun.

“With good food, you’re looking for flavor, freshness and texture — that’s what they say constitutes the perfect bite,” said Angie Bridges, owner of Po-Ke Planet, 7302 Louis Pasteur Drive, Suite 103, the newest poke place to open in the Alamo City. “And poke really is about all three of those things.”

We asked Bridges and her husband Jeff, who also run

Copa Wine Bar, to guide us through putting together the ideal poke bowl: Remember it’s not just raw fish: If the prospect of raw tuna is daunting, remember most poke places also offer cooked seafood options such as shrimp. And if seafood’s still not doing it for you, the eateries also have options to please vegetarians (tofu) and carnivores alike. In Planet Poke’s case, one of the meat options is a puro San Anto al pastor-style pork.

Keep it colorful: Just like your doc tells you that a variety of colors on your plate indicates a nutritionally balanced meal, a rainbow in your poke bowl is the best way to guarantee a medley of flavors and textures. Poke is all about fresh, simple flavors, so make sure to let those vegetables shine. “Color and texture are vital,” Angie said.

Don’t slop on the sauce: A drizzle of dressing is one of poke’s key components — a mix of soy sauce and sesame oil is traditional — but remember a little goes a long way.

Since freshness is poke’s big appeal, trust your server to add just the right amount and don’t muddle it under layers of goop. If you’re worried a super spicy sauce may incinerate your taste buds or a creamy one may be too rich, ask for a sample. “People think more is more, but some editing can be a good idea, especially with the sauce,” Jeff says.

Crown it with crunch: Texture peps up your poke, so don’t neglect the final construction phase: adding

the crunchy bits. Fried onions, sesame seeds and dried seaweed are all safe bets, but if you’re the adventurous type, why not go for the Flamin’ Hot Cheetos or chicharrones (the latter’s a Po-Ke Planet option). Just remember, some toppings are on the salty side, so don’t overdo them and throw off the balance of your bowl.

Ask your server: As with many Hawaiian dishes, poke draws heavily on Asian flavors. If those ingredients are new to you, ask the server to clue you in. Who knows, those slices of pickled daikon may be that craving you haven’t yet discovered. “We want to be here to hold your hand if you’re a first-timer,” Angie said. “We also want you to know this is super customizable.”

Mix it up: While poke places tend to put a big emphasis on presentation, don’t be shy about undoing their hard work by mixing your bowl up once you sit down. That’s the best way to make ensure you get variety in each bite. But if you’re one of those anal types who doesn’t want to ruin something pretty, feel free to pick at it piece by piece. It’s all about what makes you happy.

Start with a signature: If you’re still not feeling ready to be the Poke Boss, order one of a restaurant’s signature bowls — typically, they run the gamut from the traditional to the way out (remember that al pastor-style pork?). As Cherrity Bar opened during the Final Four, so began its impressive philanthropic endeavor.

Owned by Pam and David Malley, Cherrity Bar takes up 22,000 square feet at the corner of Montana and Cherry. And though the project picked up steam in 2017, the Malleys had envisioned this urban oasis for the past six years.

“We had to do it slowly, as we could afford things,” Pam said.

And it’s easy to see why the process has taken time.

Describing the compound that is Cherrity Bar is a task unto itself. The house on the left makes up the actual bar and opens up to the sprawling deck that wraps around both buildings. The posterior of the house on the left will include a new deli concept while the house on the right will be turned into a ramen bar by chef Michael Sohocki (more on this later). Then there’s the caliche-filled patio that’s dotted with picnic tables, lawn furniture, corn hole and a stage.

To the left of the site, a gaga ball court, and two storage containers – one holds an arcade game room and the other functions as a “Chill Zone.” In total, upwards of 700 people could easily fit in the 22,000 square-foot property. Don’t worry, free parking is available at the Alamodome Lot C on non-event days.

Though the deli and ramen bar won’t be ready until construction ends, in the meantime, Cherrity Bar is adding pop-ups by the Gwendolyn staff and the occasional food truck. For this week’s opening, which was pushed back due to pesky thunderstorms, Davila’s BBQ food truck will be

on hand and the Gwendolyn staff led by Quavon Stevens will serve up a preview of the deli. The bar portion is staffed

by The Boulevardier Group, so guests can expect quality cocktails, a great wine list and local beers featuring Texan spirits and brews.

But what makes Cherrity Bar unlike other bars in the city, or state for that matter, is their commitment to nonprofit work, a personal goal for Pam and David.

Married since 2000, the couple’s son Connor was diagnosed with Tourettes at age 6. Pam, a speech language pathologist, became involved with the Tourette Association while advocating for Connor and realized her chosen field could help those living with the disorder. She’s served on the Education Advisory Board for the Tourette Syndrome Association since 2011, and hosts workshops with parents and teachers on how to improve social, academic, and communication skills in children with TS. “We kept sending in these piddly checks, and wanted to do more,” Malley said.

The charity part of Cherrity (get it?) Bar means the bar donates 100 percent of the profits from the bar to area nonprofits who apply to become one of the monthly beneficiaries. The Tourette Association of America receives 10 percent of the proceeds. The remaining 90 percent is split between partner charities. First, second and third place are chosen by bar-goers who buy a drink or $10 of food, and receive a token for voting. Voting takes place inside a small hallway that includes four ballot boxes and literature on each nonprofit participating that month.

Charities are chosen by the Friends of the Cherrity Bar, a group of 20 community leaders with diverse backgrounds. The bar partnered with SA 2020 to help sort the applications from charity hopefuls and the Friends vote for their choices once a month through an anonymous survey. As of now, charities are booked through August, according to Pam. “As a partner, we track their outcome to results San Antonians created,” said Mary Kate Hull, brand specialist for SA 2020. “It’s a work in progress and an experiment.”

The San Antonio Fire Fighters Benevolent Fund and the San Antonio Police Officers Benevolent Fund were the charities for March. For April, Blue Star Contemporary, San Antonio Youth Literacy and San Antonio Sports have all been chosen as beneficiaries. Events are already in the works such as SA Youth Literacy’s Sip and Spell night on April 13 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Teams of spellers can register through cherritybar.com.

On a recent soft opening, teens spent the night inside the gaga ball court, while members of The Boulevardier Group manned a makeshift donation-based bar and families slurped noodles from the ramen bar pop-up.

“We didn’t want just a bar. This isn’t a place to come party all night and get liquored up. It’s a family-friendly place, a first stop on your way out for the night,” said Pam “It’s supposed to be a relaxing place to hang out and support your favorite causes.”

a rising R&B star who claims San Antonio as launch pad for his music

Despite local singers like AMEA, Alyson Alonzo and Andrea “Vocab” Sanderson continuing to hold it down for San Antonio, SA’s R&B community isn’t huge. But I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that in SA’s past, we sort of were. Local legends like Sunny Ozuna of Sunny and The Sunliners put SA on the map for Chicano Soul – a blend of R&B, soul and rock ‘n’ roll in the early ’60s that eventually turned SA into a huge hub for the genre. However, after the rise of Tejano and metal through the late ’70s into the ’90s, SA focused less of its attention on Rhythm and Blues.

Despite SA’s current lack of a booming R&B scene, Xavier Omär has managed to make some big strides in the music industry. He secured reviews in music publications like Pitchfork, XXL and Vibe to name a few, and sold out his first headlining tour, the Pink Lightning Tour, at the end of 2017, which spanned 16 major cities across from Chicago to New York to Los Angeles before ending in Vancouver.

He also headlined ASICS Tiger’s Sound Mind Sound Body Sessions to launch their spring/summer 2018 line at The Hollywood Roosevelt on January 10,11 and his hit “Blind Man” passed 20 million streams on January 26, and passed 22 million streams in February.

On top of all this success, he’s also featured on producer Sango’s new single “Sweet Holy Honey,” which came out in January and is nearing a million streams. The single showcases Omär’s ability to uniquely navigate a track with interesting rhythms using his breathy vocals that weave in

and out of Sango’s melodic chord progressions and beats while serving whispers of John Legend. And despite the Legend reference, the singer still manages to sound very much himself on this song.

Though the singer only lived in San Antonio from 2010 to 2014, after his father relocated him and his family for a job connected to the Navy, Omär told the Current that he still claims San Antonio as the city that helped him get his start as a singer. His parents still live here, and he also rocked a set at last year’s Mala Luna, alongside Lil Wayne and Future.

We caught up with the artist to get a little bit more history on what made him one of the most buzzing R&B singers on the rise.

When did you first get into music? Like, how old were you when you knew that it was something you wanted to be connected to?

I didn’t know how old I was when I wanted to make it on my own, but I know I wanted to be doing something at three years old. The first thing I picked up was a guitar, and I was no good. Then, I liked the saxophone a whole bunch, but I guess didn’t have the patience to learn notes… I ended up being a drummer for the majority of my life.

Where were you playing drums? Were you in bands?

No, my dad was the Minister of Music at pretty much every church I had ever been to. And, at first, it was my brother who was the drummer. My brother eventually

taught himself keyboard and migrated over to keys. At 11, I started playing drums. Anywhere that we lived from age 11 to 24 I played drums for my dad, every week – every Sunday, Wednesday, Thursday.

Growing up, who were some of your influences?

My singing influences came when I truly wasn’t a singer yet, I was still rapping. I spent a whole lot of time with Gnarls Barkley, John Legend… some of them aren’t even singers. So Chris Martin from Coldplay was a huge deal.

Orlando Weeks from Maccabees – they broke up last year, pretty sad about that. They were my favorite band and they broke up. And then Kanye and Pharrell. They made the most sense to me as far as creativity and just going for it.

That kinda fueled the personality more than the sound of the music… they really influenced my mindset more than their sounds itself.

That’s really well-rounded. I feel like I can hear all that going on in your music. When were you like ‘you know what, I’m done rapping, I want to start singing?’ ‘Cause you can hear in just the way you sing. I thought, ‘I know this dude has bars.’ You’re able to change the cadence up, and hit the flow better than most. What made you jump to singing?

I didn’t believe myself as a rapper. In the sense that I didn’t think I had a voice I would want to listen to as a rapper. And didn’t. I think ‘rap voice’ is a real thing. Guys like Kendrick, sacurrent.com • April 4-10, 2018 • CURRENT 37

J.Cole, and Jay Z. – all the greats that you hear, even newer artist like J.I.D., they got voices you want to listen to… I didn’t feel like I had that, so I kinda just reevaluated what I was doing. I didn’t think I had my own style or sound. I always thought I was taking someone else’s style.

So I had sung this song [when] I was in this rap group... I sang a song for the first time from start to finish, and I got so many great reactions from it. So when I moved to San Antonio, I went to an open mic and I sang that song, and the reactions I got there were kind of solidified into me. And that same summer, in August, American Idol was in Houston, so I went down to Houston and tried out for Idol ... Obviously, I didn’t get anywhere in Idol… but that didn’t make me think, ‘I shouldn’t do this.’ It just made me really mad, and I got equipment and I started making music, and that’s it from there.

So early on it was a lot of half and half – like, I’m rapping some verses and singing some choruses – still trying to get comfortable fully as a singer ‘cause I didn’t have my style yet. I even sounded British for a while because I was so heavily influenced

by Chris Martin and Orlando Weeks. But eventually I got my own style… Just now, I have begun to circle back and touch on rap a little bit more with my verses.

Are you working on an album right now? I know you just got back from tour, and you have that new track right now with Sango, which is a banger.

I’m doing the very best I can to just work. So I’m just trying to make music. Doing a lot of features. You’re gonna see a lot of features this year.

What would you say to the artist, musician or band that’s coming out of San Antonio? What advice would you give them?

Just continue working. There’s few people that you can point to who have had an overnight success. It’s a grind. When you do this music stuff, you’re saying ‘I want to put four, five, six, seven years of my life towards really making progress.’ And sometimes, you might feel you’re supposed to have made much bigger steps than you have, or you’re not getting the respect you deserve. Don’t focus on any of those things, just focus on going to get what belongs to you… You don’t get what you don’t work for. Keep working; keep trying to be innovative. Don’t try to sound like anybody else. Focus on the people that do love you; focus on the fans. Don’t worry about the city not loving you yet. When you go take over and you come back, the city will love you. Put blinders on and work ‘till you get where you want to be.

South Texas Legion The South Texas Popular Culture Center (TexPop) will turn up the volume on its current “Metal Mayhem” exhibit with a concert uniting the musicians who helped make San Antonio the 1980s’ “Heavy Metal Capitol of the World.” The Sunday, April 8, show will assemble performers from South Texas’ S.A. Slayer, Watchtower, Juggernaut and Militia, among others, to shred through the songs that made them headbanging legends. One of the perks of writing about music for a living is discovering new music, since I sort of need to listen to a new band before I can really say anything about them. Now, it’s not like every band I check out that’s coming through San Antonio is my absolute favorite. CURSE & CURSUS According to Isabella van Elferen, a professor of musicology at Kingston University in London, the term “darkwave” originated in the 1980s as “an indicator of the dark counterpart of new wave.” Van Elferen cited bands like Cocteau Twins, Soft Cell, and Depeche Mode as exponents of that first generation of darkwave, pointing to the bands’ slower tempos, lower pitches and use of minor keys. So, basically, a sadder, more goth new wave, basically. Baltimore’s Curse, whose music is relatively danceable, shimmery and upbeat is prime example of this new resurgence of darkwave today. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): I’m about to say things that sound extraordinary. And it’s possible that they are in fact a bit overblown. But even if that’s the case, I trust that there is a core of truth in them. So rejoice in their oracular radiance. First, if you have been hoping for a miracle cure, the next four weeks will be a time when you’re more likely than usual to find it or generate it. Second, if you have fantasized about getting help to address a seemingly irremediable problem, asking aggressively for that help now will lead to at least a partial fix. Third, if you have wondered whether you could ever retrieve a lost or missing part of your soul, the odds are more in your favor than they’ve been in a long time.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): The French government

defines books as an “essential good,” along with water, bread, and electricity. Would you add anything to that list of life’s basics? Companionship? Stories? Deep sleep?

Pleasurable exercise and movement? Once you identify your “essential goods,” I invite you to raise the level of reverence and care you give them. Take an oath to treat them as holy treasures. Boost your determination and ability to get all you need of their blessings. The coming weeks will be a favorable time to enhance your appreciation of the fundamentals you sometimes take for granted.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Buckingham Palace is the home and office of the Queen of England. It has been the main royal residence since Queen Victoria took the throne in 1837. But in earlier times, the site served other purposes.

The 17th-century English lawyer Clement Walker described the building occupying that land as a brothel, a hotbed of “debauchery.” Before that the space was a mulberry garden where silkworms tuned mulberry leaves into raw material for silk fabrics. I see the potential for an almost equally dramatic transformation of a certain place in your life, Aquarius. Start dreaming and scheming about the possibilities.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Poet Carolyn Forché is a role model for how to leave one’s comfort zone. In her early career, she earned writing degrees at placid universities near her childhood home in the American Midwest.

Her first book mined material about her family; its first poem is addressed to her grandmother. But then she relocated to El Salvador, where she served as a human rights advocate during that country’s civil war. Later she lived and wrote in Lebanon at the height of its political strife. Her drive to expand her range of experience invigorated her poetry and widened her audience. Would you consider drawing inspiration from Forché in the coming weeks and months, Pisces? I don’t necessarily recommend quite so dramatic a departure for you, but even a mild version will be well rewarded.
