Bates and financial consultant Gary Cain, were all indicted on a combined 22 felony counts of fraud and money laundering. Bates plead guilty in early January, while Uresti and Cain’s joint case continues to play out in federal court.

Cantu’s involvement in the case begins in 2010, when her Ford Explorer’s tire exploded while she was behind the wheel.

The resulting crash killed two of her children and their two friends.

Cantu, who lives in Harlingen, said her son’s basketball coach recommended she contact Uresti to file a wrongful death suit against Michelin and Walmart.

Uresti did, and ended up winning Cantu a hefty settlement in the case.

According to Cantu, their sexual relationship began during this initial trial.

A long-anticipated witness in the federal criminal trial of state Senator Carlos Uresti took the stand Thursday, Feb. 1 — kicking off a tedious, detailed, and, at times, salacious unearthing of the witness’ relationship with the San Antonio lawmaker.

Denise Cantu’s two-day long testimony detailed the photos sent from Uresti’s cell phone of his genitals, steamy sex in an office restroom, and other accounts of the Democratic lawmaker’s extramarital affair with Cantu, a former client at his San Antonio law firm.

But Cantu wasn’t called by federal prosecutors to testify this week just to make the jury blush.

Cantu was one of the main investors in FourWinds, a nowbankrupt company that sold sand used in hydraulic fracking.

Uresti owned a small percentage of the local company, and was promised substantial profits for recruiting investors and offering occasional legal advice. During the company’s short run, bookkeepers were allegedly told to tweak spreadsheets to make potential investors believe the company was far more financially stable than it was. In reality, prosecutors say the company’s owners were all but burning money on gaudy parties, prostitutes, and lavish vacations. Investors, including Cantu, lost millions when FourWinds declared bankruptcy in 2015. Uresti and two co-defendants, FourWinds CEO Stan

By 2014, however, Uresti had convinced Cantu to invest the bulk of her settlement — around $900,000 — into FourWinds. Unbeknownst to Cantu, Uresti got 10 percent of her profits — a hefty $27,000 kickback.

When the company went bankrupt in 2015, Cantu lost the majority of her massive investment.

In court, both federal prosecutors and Uresti’s defense attorneys have dedicated hours to picking apart Cantu’s relationship with the lawmaker, in an attempt to define her character.

While prosecutors have painted Cantu as an emotionally vulnerable victim to Uresti’s ponzi scheme, swayed by a man who helped her recover from a immense tragedy with romance and promises of wealth, Uresti’s attorneys spent most of Friday depicting their client as Cantu’s white knight, saving her from the villainous grip of FourWinds CEO Bates.

Defense attorney Michael McCrum raked through dozens of text messages Friday, sent between Cantu and Bates. After Uresti convinced her to invest in FourWinds and introduced her to Bates, the CEO and Cantu began a sexual relationship of their own. Like Uresti, Bates sent Cantu explicit messages, littered with promises of wealth. Cantu struggled to remember how often and when she has met with either men for sexual encounters.

McCrum had Cantu tell the jury that while she was receiving illicit text messages from Uresti and Bates, she was also in the beginning of a relationship with a man in Harlingen. Suddenly, the defense morphed Cantu into a promiscuous maneater out to break Uresti’s heart.

McCrum pointed to a voicemail message from Uresti telling Cantu not to sign any paperwork Bates shows her until he sees it.

“As Uresti is leaving voicemails seeking to protect you, you were with Mr. Bates and engaging in sexting with Mr. Bates,” McCrum opined.

At least one jury member rolled their eyes.

Finger Pointing DA LaHood, Who Sought to Represent Sex Offenders, Attacks Opponent for Representing Sex Offenders ALEX ZIELINSKI | @ALEX_ZEE

On March 6, Bexar County residents will vote on whether or not they’d like to see District Attorney Nico LaHood serve a second term as the county’s top prosecutor. While the final decision will come after the November general election, the March primary will decide which Democratic candidate will make it to the next round: LaHood or longtime criminal defense lawyer Joe Gonzales.

The winner will face Republican defense attorney Tylden Shaeffer, who is running unopposed.

The two men, formerly law partners and friends, have put their now-soured relationship on display as election day draws nearer. The latest move came on Jan. 30, when LaHood, known for his gruff demeanor and easy-to-lose temper (he’s already verbally attacked constituents at two separate campaign events), unveiled a campaign video placing Gonzales in the same team as notorious sexual assaulters.

It’s first important to understand the two attorneys’ shared history. Both men were close acquaintances until March 2017, when a murder trial placed the lawyers on opposite sides of the courtroom. After LaHood disclosed at the last minute that one of his office’s staffers had a sexual relationship with a witness in the case, Gonzales and his defense team called for a mistrial. LaHood’s team then met with the lawyers in the judge’s chambers to discuss the next steps with District Judge Lori Valenzuela. That’s when

LaHood allegedly threatened to “destroy” and “shut down” Gonzales’ law practice if the defense continued to pursue a mistrial. Valenzuela has confirmed these threats taking place — while LaHood has consistently denied it ever happening.

At campaign events, Gonzales claims this confrontation ultimately inspired him to run against LaHood in 2018.

Since his initial campaign for office in 2014, LaHood has made a name for himself by taking down “bad guys” — like San Antonio’s so-called “angel of death” Genene Jones, or the man charged with killing San Antonio police officer Benjamin Marconi, or the federal government (for promoting vaccinations he believes cause autism, despite scientific evidence that they don’t) and, now, Joe Gonzales.

In the video released Tuesday, LaHood, dressed in his signature suspenders with his black hair slicked back in a 1940s cut, addresses the camera with a stoney glare.

“I was hoping that it wouldn’t get to political and personal attacks,” LaHood says, before personally attacking his opponent in the campaign video.

Waving a glossy campaign mailer from the Gonzales camp that calls the sitting DA “prejudiced and intolerant,” LaHood informs viewers that Gonzales has received out-ofstate funding from notorious Democrat campaign financier George Soros. LaHood alleged that Soros, whose political action committee has donated $6,000 to the Gonzales

campaign, is trying to “purchase” the DA seat. And then, LaHood turns to his opponent’s career. “[Gonzales] has specialized in defending people who rape women. He specializes in people who sexually assault children,” LaHood said.

It’s true, Gonzales has been paid to defend clients charged with rape or sexual abuse of a minor. But coming from LaHood, a former defense lawyer who once ran ads looking specifically for clients accused of “any type of sexual offense,” the attack rings hollow.

“What does a rapist, a child molester and a billionaire by the name of George Soros all have in common?” LaHood continues, seeming to be setting up a deeply offensive joke.

“They want Joe Gonzales to be DA of Bexar County.”

Four photos pop up in front of LaHood as he speaks: one of Harvey Weinstein (accused of raping multiple women in Hollywood), one of Larry Nassar (recently convicted of sexually assaulting child gymnasts), one of Soros and then, Gonzales.

Without context, it would be dangerously easy to assume these headline-grabbing sexual predators have made the unusual decision to endorse a Bexar County District Attorney candidate.

“Please pass this information along,” LaHood asks his viewers.

Your move, Gonzales.

A Shulenberg medical marijuana dispensary has officially issued the state’s first legal shipment of concentrated bud.

Knox Medical, a national medical marijuana company, set up shop in the small town of Shulenberg — a town at the halfway point between Houston and San Antonio on I-10 — in September. It became the first of three state-approved dispensaries to open in Texas under the 2016 Compassionate Use Act, a law legalizing the sale of cannabis-based medical products to the estimated 150,000 Texans with intractable epilepsy (a type of epileptic seizures that can’t be controlled with medical treatment).

On Thursday, Knox announced its first shipment of the low-THC, high-CBD liquid to a local 6-year-old girl with epilepsy.

“Patients deserve medical relief and Knox Medical is proud to work with physicians and caregivers, and in close coordination with the Texas Department of Public Safety, to provide this medicine that exceeds the most rigorous standards for quality and consistency,” said José Hidalgo, CEO of Florida-based Knox Medical. “This is a historic day for Texas and we will work tirelessly to uphold the trust and responsibility the state has placed in Knox Medical.”

Patients eligible for the newly legal oil must receive a recommendation from a board-certified neurologist and a second independent physician. Only around 15 doctors are legally allowed to prescribe medical marijuana in Texas.

This is the first step in Texans’ long battle to legalize marijuana.

Aside from those with intractable epilepsy, marijuana use in Texas (for medical or recreation) remains illegal in Texas.

While it’s often applauded for its strong art and art history department, and the steady stream of talented artists that emerge from its programs, the University of Texas at San Antonio also boasts a truly wide-ranging collection of contemporary art that comprises paintings, photographs, sculptures, mixedmedia and works on paper. Reflective of both the avid collecting habits of former UTSA President Ricardo Romo and the deep insights of curator Arturo Infante Almeida, the collection is typically displayed in interior and exterior spaces across three campuses but comes to light this month in “Voz,” a sprawling group show on view at Centro de Artes through June 10. Celebrating the collection’s strong focus on Latin@ art to the tune of 222 works by 66 artists, the exhibition comes across as a meticulously organized museum show uniting dozens of familiar names (Ana Fernandez, Alberto Mijangos, Franco Mondini-Ruiz, Richard Armendariz, Anita Valencia and Kathy Vargas among them) with many others well worth discovering.

Hovering in Texas but extending far beyond its borders, “Voz” employs both floors of Centro de Artes for an immediately engaging crash course in Latin@ art distinguished by three areas that double as shows within a show: a recreation of UTSA’s “Veinticinco” (a long-running project comprising prints by 25 artists); Cheech Marin’s “The Chicano Collection” (a portfolio of prints by Vincent Valdez, Mel Casas, Alex Rubio, Jesse Treviño and many more); and a thoughtful pairing of images by iconic Mexican photographer Graciela Iturbide and her mentor, Manuel Álvarez Bravo. The McNay Art Museum has always housed arguably San Antonio’s finest collection of THU-TUE modern art and attracted damn fine visiting exhibitions to boot. But, over the past year and a half, owing in no small part to the bold, forward-thinking vision and useful connections of new director Richard Aste, the McNay has really been on a roll. Showing no signs of losing momentum, the museum is set to open three compelling new exhibitions on February 8 (all of which will run through May 6). “Something to Say: The McNay Presents 100 Years of African American Art” marks the museum’s first survey of modern and contemporary African-American art.

Encouraging a thoughtful consideration of the plurality of African-American experience and expression, the exhibit represents the McNay’s ongoing commitment to “equity, inclusion, and social consciousness as well as artistic excellence.” “30 Americans: Rubell Family Collection” boasts some of the most important African-American artists of the past three decades, including Mark Bradford, Nick Cave, Robert Colescott, Glenn Ligon, Kerry James Marshall, Mickalene Thomas, and Kehinde Wiley (whose recently commissioned presidential portrait of Barack Obama we are dying to see).

“Haiti’s Revolution in Art: Jacob Lawrence Toussaint L’Ouverture Series” is a portfolio of stunningly powerful prints from the artist’s 41-panel exploration of the undersung leader of the 18th-century Haitian revolution, which drove out the French colonizers. Potential social problems indicated by Jeff Foxworthy’s “You Might Be a Redneck If …” jokes: alcoholism, poverty, incest, poor hygiene, educational deficiency. As anti-white-supremacy group Redneck Revolt has been demonstrating recently, a whole spectrum of people with varying beliefs enjoy hunting, fishing and going to the bathroom outside. Tennessee-born comedian Trae Crowder, who self-identifies as “white trash” has gained internet fame and an ABC sitcom deal from his “Liberal Redneck” videos in which he defends trans rights, Black Lives Matter and other progressive movements and views in the language of Blue Collar Comedy. ‘For the Love of It All’ Back in 2010, Mary Elizabeth Cantu launched the creative reuse organization Spare Parts in response to a lack of creativity in K-12 classrooms and statewide budget cuts for arts education, among other issues. Over the years, the entrepreneur, out-of-the-box thinker and certified Master Reuser has tirelessly collected traditional and non-traditional art supplies to distribute among Bexar County educators while keeping tons of “pre-loved” crafting materials out of landfills. In 2013, Cantu extended the scope of Spare Parts by teaming up with collaborator/educator Gabriela Santiago to launch the Spare Parts Mini Art Museum, a mobile art gallery that showcases tiny works of art (most measure 4-by-4 inches or smaller) in maquette-type displays that employ hardcover books or binders as “museum” walls. An eco-minded initiative led by artist/educator Kara Michele Salinas, “For the Love of it All: A Creative Spare Parts Workshop” encourages guests to step away from predictable, store-bought Valentine’s Day gifts and instead create something with a bit more heart, soul and originality. Not since the 1960s has the country seen a more divisive political climate. Emboldened by the election of President Trump in 2016, a man many saw as a racist, a xenophobe and a misogynist, an extreme far-right movement suddenly made its way into the political mainstream. Among the ideas promulgated by the far-right was the belief that the United States was fundamentally a white, Christian country. From the “Heil Trump” salutes at a gathering of white nationalists shortly before Trump’s inauguration, to the murder of Heather Hyer at a “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, white supremacy continues to rear its ugly head within American culture. On Saturday, Freight Gallery presents “Images of Power,” an exhibition of new work by 30 artists from across the country that deal with “current events, historical quandaries and the rising tide of fascism at our doorstep.” Guest curated

PostSecret: The Show

In its first few years of existence, PostSecret, a blog launched in 2005 by Frank Warren, later to become a series of bestselling books, was impossible to look away from, owing to several factors. The ongoing community mail art project that invites people to anonymously submit secrets via handmade postcards, selections from which are then posted to the blog and/or printed in the books and/or displayed in various exhibits, definitely cashed in on the rise of blogging culture, our innate desire to liberate ourselves via confession, and our love of chisme. Beginning in 2015, Warren has, with the aid of three actors and a guitarist, produced a touring show that brings the ineffable satisfaction of the concept to the stage in an engaging multimedia format. upset when an elementary school bully starts stealing the items from inside a lost and found box where he lives. Originally released last summer before Cars 3, Lou is cute and playful enough although the final moral-of-the-story homestretch doesn’t make much sense.

Revolting Rhymes, based on a collection of poems by late author Roald Dahl (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach, Fantastic Mr. Fox), offers audiences an alternative take on popular fairy tale characters like Little Red Riding Hood, the Three Little Pigs and Snow White, by blending their stories together into a medley of minor amusement.

Connecting the tales together through the Big Bad Wolf and his lupine family, Revolting Rhymes doesn’t capture the same enchantment as either the original fairy tales or Dahl’s book, but should get a pass from most indiscriminate children.

You know those three Oscar categories that always seem to bust your predictions chart every single year? This year, walk into your Oscar viewing party feeling a bit more confident. Starting February 9, all 15 short films nominated for the 90th annual Academy Awards (March 4) will screen at the Santikos Bijou Theater in four separate programs — Animated Shorts, Live-Action Shorts and Documentary Shorts A and B. The Current has seen all the nominees, and here’s what we think:

leftover desserts. As the situation unveils something much more sinister, Garden Party lightens the mood before wrapping up with some effective dark humor that gets to the core of the bleak narrative.

A stop-motion animated short from France, Negative Space is the charming, imaginative and darkly funny story of a man who reminisces back to his childhood when he and his father would bond over the finer details of packing the perfect suitcase. Rich with detail and featuring a wonderful underwater scene with “underwear jellyfish,” this Wes Andersonesque animation is a charmer.

What animation contest would be complete without an entry from Pixar or Disney? At least one of them has received a nomination in the last seven Oscars. This time, Pixar’s LOU tells the tale of — well, actually, we’re not really sure what “Lou” is, although he (?) gets very

Animated Shorts Although it’s rare for any of the short film categories to feature familiar names in their films’ credits, this year the animated category includes one of the biggest.

Nominated as a producer of Dear Basketball is five-time NBA champion

and Los Angeles Lakers great Kobe Bryant. Directed by character animator Glen Keane and based on a letter Bryant wrote for The Players’ Tribune in 2015 about his retirement from basketball, Dear Basketball is a beautifully hand-drawn animation and personal poem that is both impassioned and inspiring. Narrated with affection by Bryant himself (and scored

by John Williams!), his lyrical farewell to basketball also shares a message of finding inner peace when letting go of something you love.

The quiet, peaceful backyard of an abandoned mansion is the setting of Garden Party where a host of frogs and toads explore nature and do what frogs and toads do. The short, however, doesn’t limit its amphibious stars to the outside world, as we watch them infiltrate the empty estate to investigate their surroundings and eat

Live-Action Shorts Inspired by the actual calls to 911 that were received during a school shooting incident in Atlanta, Georgia in 2013, DeKalb Elementary is a tense albeit sympathetic reenactment of the moments an armed young man shares with an elementary school front-office receptionist during a stand-off with police. The dynamic between actors Tarra Riggs and Bo Mitchell is authentic and humanistic as writer/director Reed Van Dyk allows the scene to take form one heartbreaking second after another.

Quirky in its delivery, The Eleven O’Clock stars actor Damon Herriman (TV’s Justified) as “Dr.” Nathan Klein, a delusional patient who has scheduled an appointment with a new psychiatrist thinking he, too, is a psychiatrist. The back-and-forth dialogue is exceptionally clever as we watch “real” doctor Terry Phillips (Josh Lawson of TV’s House of Lies and the film’s screenwriter) attempt to corral his patient’s mind back into their therapy session before he loses his own. Playing out like a highly-entertaining comedy routine, The Eleven O’Clock is a flat-out riot.

Based on the 1955 murder of 14-yearold Emmett Till in Money, Mississippi, My Nephew Emmett tells the true story of the night Till (Joshua Wright) was killed for a minor encounter that took place earlier in

compassionate storytelling, The Silent Child paints a pure picture of what it’s like to be part of a world that doesn’t recognize your exceptionality.

Distrust and anger between Christians and Muslims in eastern Africa comes to a head in Watu Wote: All of Us, a German/Kenyan production that highlights the goodness individuals can have for one another despite their religious differences.

Based on an actual 2015 event, Watu Wote tells the story of a group of Muslims who protected a Christian woman from AlShabaab militants during a cross-country bus ride. There is a lot of history to unpack in a 22-minute drama, but director Katja Benrath keeps the tension high as he offers viewers hope for humanity.

Documentary Shorts Featuring America’s oldest interracial newlyweds, the 95- and 96-year-old title characters in Edith+Eddie give new meaning to the phrase “a love story for the ages.” When a family feud threatens to separate the couple, Edith and Eddie put their faith in God to keep them together.

Director Laura Chekoway captures both the sweet and tragic moments during the unfortunate situation and does so with empathy and heart.

Heaven Is a Traffic Jam on the 405 follows 56-year-old Mindy Alper, a successful visual artist living in Los Angeles, whose mental illness has affected her life for as long as she can remember.

Through interviews, archive video and photos, and Alper’s own works of art, director Frank Stiefel shares an intimate portrait of a woman who understands her limitations but refuses to give up being who she is — a free and creative soul.

In Heroin(e), three women — Jan Rader, a fire department deputy chief; Patricia Keller, a drug court judge; and Necia Freeman, a volunteer for a nonprofit that feeds the poor — do all they can to make a positive change in the lives of drug addicts living in Huntington, West Virginia, a city with an overdose rate that is 10 times the national average. Director Elaine McMillion Sheldon delivers an unflinching and realistic look at the problem of drug use in this specific corner of the U.S. and puts a face on those willing to reach out

and give guidance.

Director Thomas Lennon takes viewers into a classic French restaurant in Cleveland, Ohio, run by men and women transitioning from the prison system in Knife Skills. Doubling as a culinary school, the restaurant recruits former inmates for a challenging six-month training course that puts aspiring employees’ feet to the fire. It’s a fascinating journey as we watch these committed individuals breathe life into an exciting new business and leave their criminal history behind by finding pride in their next calling.

African-American school teacher Breaion King lives through a nightmare scenario in Austin in 2015 when she is pulled over by police for speeding and is violently arrested. In Traffic Stop, director Kate Davis interviews King about her childhood, her career as a teacher and how the confrontation between her and the officer changed her life forever.

Southerleigh adds oyster bar

>Is this the Lüke Happy Hour replacement we’ve been waiting for?

Maybe.

Southerleigh Fine Food & Brewery announced it’ll add an outdoor oyster bar to the side of the building facing Pearl Park. Construction of the outdoor bar, designed by Clayton & Little, will start this February with a vague spring timeline. The bar will feature “eight Southerleigh beers on tap, plus serve four to five varieties of fresh oysters, as well as freshly selected shrimp, crab, clams, and caviar” according to a press release.

The bar will include 14 seats and utilize the outdoor tables Southerleigh already has at its disposal.

The release also shared news on Southerleigh Brewing Co. at Brooks, which is slated for a fall 2018 opening date.

The menu will be made up of casual family-style dishes, specializing in pressure fried Southern fried chicken and oysters, according to the release.

Sulla Strada heads East

>John Winkler, owner of Sulla Strada Pizza, will be taking his talents to Dignowity Hill this summer as one of the anchor locations for a new development by Zurich Properties.

Sulla, which launched as a food truck in 2014 out of Alamo Street Eat Bar, gained followers for its Napolitanostyle pizza. In March of 2017, the truck moved on to the St. Mary’s Strip where Sulla serves the late night crowd.

“I wanted to check out a different scene,” said Winkler, 42.

The “one-man show” will still keep trucking while the new site at the corner of Hackberry and Houston nears

Local shop offers Fuck Da Flu shots

>With the onset of an early flu season, a particularly “nasty” strain of it, and no peak in sight to a season that’s already led to more than 11,000 hospitalizations according to the latest CDC report, one San Antonio juice shop is fed up.

Buddy V’s opened at La Cantera

>Buddy V’s Ristorante, the Italian-American eatery from Buddy “Cake Boss” Valastro, opened its doors on Monday, January 29.

Located at The Shops at La Cantera, Buddy V’s serves up twists on Italian-American classics as well as desserts that made Valastro famous with his TLC show.

The menu includes options for lunch and dinner, as well as a limited bakery menu. Like much of the Cake Boss brand, dishes honor the Valastro family. Inspired by family recipes, options include Lisa V’s linguine and white clam sauce with white wine, garlic, extra virgin olive oil; Valastro Sunday gravy with meatballs, sausage, lamb, pork and a bowl of rigatoni; and Nona’s lasagna al forno.

The restaurant features Texas spirits, including Alamo Golden Ale, Witherspoons River Rum, 512 Tequila Silver, Dripping Springs Gin, and more. More Korean BBQ on the Northside

>Quarters Japanese and Korean BBQ is now open on the northside of San Antonio. The shop, which features DIY grilling, opened last week in the same shopping center as Claude Hoppers and Heavenly Pho at the Blanco and Huebner intersection.

The menu is broken down into two sections: a readyto-eat portion filled with salads, soups, and sides, and a ready-to-grill section with a collection of beef, pork, poultry and seafood to choose from, with prices labeled for regular hours and happy hour (3-6 p.m. daily) ranging from $6 to $9. A collection of four dinners are available with different sets of meats and seafood for $55.25 ot $69.25 with miso soup, steamed rice, kimchi and pickled yellow radish.

Skip the pad Thai and explore the rest of the menu at Thai Esan & Noodle House

Most San Antonians not of the Anthony Bourdain bent have had scant opportunity to sample the cuisine of Esan (Esaan, Isan…), Thailand’s, vast northeastern province bordering on Laos and Cambodia.

Blink in 2016 and you missed Baan Esaan, as far as I know the city’s first restaurant to feature the food of the region. Run by a cocky half-Thai kid backed up with female family members in the kitchen, BE introduced Southtown to the spunky-spicy somtum salad of green papaya that’s an Esan specialty, to uncompromisingly odd yet irresistible sauces and pastes utilizing ingredients such as cow’s skin, and to lidded baskets of resilient, sticky rice, the essential accompaniment to fermented sausage.

Baan Esaan might have been just a little too uncompromising. Apparently not about to make that mistake, low-key Thai Esan has hedged its bets with a selection of Chinese favorites and anodyne appetizers

such as cream-cheese filled seafood rangoon. As good as the kitchen’s renditions of orange chicken might be, we’re confident that cocky Current readers will want to concentrate instead on those dishes that more truly represent the region. (Pro tip: you may need to push back, in firm but friendly fashion, against well-meaning staff that will assume you’re just some rube in off the street not willing to be challenged.)

Thai Esan meatballs, pork version, were only a semisuccess. Springy yet surprisingly moist, these deep-fried orbs need a little spice to make them more interesting; the house-made sweet chili sauce just didn’t do the job. But, to the rescue, the house rendition of a classic fish sauce with lime, sugar, chili and cilantro. It’s both more delicate and more complex than many you will have had at other Thai and Vietnamese restaurants, and it will come in handy frequently over the course of your meal.

Meatballs are a part of many culinary cultures, but the Thai Esan fried sweet eggs don’t have a lot of competition.

Often called Son-in-Law eggs, they’re first hard-boiled, then fried (this gives the eggs a kind of skin), halved, and topped with a sweet chili sauce that traditionally contains tamarind and palm sugar. Toppings include crushed peanut and scallion, and the success of this unlikely-seeming combination is one of the reasons reviewing remains rewarding after all these years.

There are still things to be learned about Asian soups, too. Two “signature soups” cohabit on the restaurant’s menu; we picked tom saap due to the distance the ingredient list implied from standbys such as tom yung.

And we loved it. Tender tripe gave the bowl a lacy visual component, beef added depth, and galangal, kaffir lime, and lemongrass provided citrusy fragrance and flavors.

And there’s more to know about sticky rice. “We like to pinch off a bit and eat it with the papaya salad,” (often called somtum) said the owner. “I also prefer cabbage to lettuce as a wrap,” she continued, citing its heftier crunch. You may not like the resilient rice on its own (I find it annoyingly chewy — though good when grilled), but there’s no doubt that, in combination, textures run the full gamut in a single mouthful.

Even ordered spicy (but not “Thai Hot”), the green papaya and carrot salad isn’t as incendiary as some I’ve had, and you need to think of the salad’s dried shrimp the same way you might a bay leaf — as seasoning but not to be eaten. But wrapped and rice-stuffed, it’s all a thrill ride.

Sticky rice serves another function with the fermented pork sausage: it helps keep the accessory peanuts and grated ginger in place. Taken alone, the sausages aren’t as funky-fermented as the ones I first tried at Baan Esaan; with accents of lime leaf and lemongrass, they skew more to the mild side if ordered “regular.” (If you want them “spicy”, you may have to have another discussion with staff.) But, again, it’s the package that wins it.

Now, in this push-back climate, may be the time to suggest another hashtag: #embraceunfamiliarfoods. We had one more encounter with our delightful but dubious waitress over a noodle order. We wanted the Thai Esan dry noodle “tossed in tangy house sauce”; she was convinced we would prefer Spicy basil noodle — and we finally gave in.

In any other setting, this veg-filled plate with clear noodles and Thai basil might have been perfectly acceptable (and it benefitted by a dousing in that fantastic fish sauce), but here it brought nothing new to the party. On their way out, some friends who own local restaurants allowed us a sample of the doggie-bag dry noodles they had been insistent enough to order. Much more interesting.

Moral: Stand up for your rights as an adventuresome eater. (Instead of mango and coconut sweet rice for dessert, go for the far more exotic Ruam-Mit, for example.) Eventually, your palate will thank you.

Name: Rosella at The Rand Background: Rosella, a coffee shop that caters to winos and beer nuts, opened its original location off of E. Jones Ave. in early 2014.

The success of the coffee and booze combo led to the opening of the Rosella at The Rand. In the morning hours, the new Rosella features the same qualities that the original location offers: free WiFi, tasty snacks, and refreshing drinks. In the afternoon, the vibe changes from a workspace to a restaurant by offering a happy hour, losing the free Wi-Fi and

putting out a food menu that definitely offers more than just avocado toast.

Happy Hour: The happy hour at the stillnew Rand location runs Monday through Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. The menu features craft cocktails, beer, wine and food. For the libations you will receive $3 off the menu price. The food specials during happy hour include smaller bites (pita bread and beer cheese, lox ragoons, fries or mac and cheese) each for $8 or less.

Patrons: The Rand location is filled with young professionals and business types, such as members of Geekdom that head down to happy hour after working at their start-ups, and those from established companies in the downtown area — all joining to meet up for a drink and unwind after a long day.

Experience: Rosella at the Rand combines the laidback atmosphere of the original Rosella Coffee Co., with the hustle and bustle of the downtown area. When I arrived at 6 p.m. on a Tuesday, there were booths and seats occupied, but it

wasn’t too crowded that you couldn’t find a seat. I ordered a drink off of the craft cocktail menu that was recently retooled.

The craft coffee cocktails are a great deal for happy hour just by themselves. They range from $8 to $12 and during happy hour the prices are knocked down as low as $5. I ordered the Positive Tension cocktail, a delicious combination of Evan Williams Bonded, espresso, Cardamaro, Cocchi Torino, and orange bitters for $6.

If you are feeling hungry, I recommend the chicken “spiedies,” the skewers of chicken only cost $6 as well and are perfect for filling up. Go with a friend though, that way you can order different drinks and light bites to get a sample of the menu.

Honestly, Rosella’s happy hour is great, the only downside I saw about it was that the complimentary Wi-Fi isn’t extended through happy hour. If it was, I’m sure the place would be packed.

The 13 songs on the album – some culled and cajoled from a cursed list of castouts from other projects, some written for this album which McLaughlin has been loosely planning for years – are funny and dark, preposterous and gritty, pretty and unhinged in turns.

On Tabloid News, McLaughlin has done what he’s always wanted to do, but never been able to fully realize before: he’s crafted a hot, rollicking, loosely-cohesive set of songs that filter his proclivity for cabarettinted pre-rock stylings and filthily askew piano-pop through his lo-fi punk roots.

When San Antonio alt-rockers Nothing More announced that they had been nominated for, not one, but three (!!!)

Grammys, we were stoked. Not just because the band’s from here, but these dudes actually deserve it.

Since 2003, the band has been paying their dues on the local live music circuit, playing places like Jack’s and The White Rabbit (now Paper Tiger), and touring relentlessly.

When they got word of the Grammy nominations, they were actually in the middle of their European tour.

On top of the actual rock awards not even being broadcast during the ceremony (winners were announced before the show), the San Antonio quartet lost out to Foo Fighters’ “Run” for Best Rock Song while The War on Drugs snatched Best Rock Album for A Deeper Understanding. Finally, the late Leonard Cohen took home Best Rock Performance for “You Want It Darker.”

“It’s like the difference between a con man and a magician: with a magician you know what’s not real,” he added. And McLaughlin, folks, is definitely a little bit of both. But, mostly a magician.

With a special knack for not taking himself too seriously, and an uncanny penchant for songcraft in his own distinct mode, McLaughlin has made a very good album that exhibits masterful (and cheeky) storytelling, and musically exists on its own arcane plane.

Our favorite tracks so far include “November 1st,” destined to be the day after Halloween anthem that we never knew we needed, “Mysterioso Blues,” which includes the bonkers representative line “Makin’ love in the mummy’s tomb / I got a crystal ball just to seal my doom,” the title track, a jangly romp through a mad catalog of strange images and half yarns, and “All’s Well in Roswell,” an instrumental number best described as piano-infused garagerock for folks who live in haunted houses.

It is sad that the Grammys didn’t go with a band that was fresh and put out a solid rock album that doesn’t subscribe to some trending sub-genre of indie rock. The 2017 album, The Stories We Tell Ourselves, showcased Nothing More’s ability to write contemporary rock ‘n’ roll that’s heavy and heartfelt without sounding corny – a pit many “active rock” bands fall into. The 18-track record blends technicality, thought-provoking lyrics, and enough pop aesthetic to sound approachable to the casual rock listener all while satiating the ears of folks who fancy the harder end of the music spectrum. To put it simply: the album is fantastic.

And judging by the three Grammy nominations, we’re not the only ones to think so either.

Silverstein Dirty Genez EP Release Party Hailing from Ontario, Canada, Silverstein have been a well-known name in the punk and hardcore world since the early 2000s; and not just because of their solid songwriting and musicianship, but because of their sheer longevity in the genre.

For a group that survived the god-awful label of “screamo” (seriously, what was that?), Silverstein managed to stay ahead of the pack, producing heavy, emotional tracks without sounding like they were ripping off every other band in the genre. Made up of guitarist Kiko Pants, drummer Marc Navarro, bass guitarist Marcus Martinez, keyboardist April Gomez, violinist Christina Quick and frontwoman Jordan Peña, Dirty Genez are far from newcomers to the San Antonio music community. The jazzy indie group have been sharing stages with artists and bands like Lonely Horse and Alyson Alonzo since 2010.

Peña told the Current that while the band is excited to release their first album ever, they’re ready to move on and continue writing more music. “This album is closure to a lot of pain” said Peña, “the closing of a chapter in our lives.” On “Breathe,” an unreleased track on the album, the sound is definitely melancholy, but also dreamy, like, that moment between a dream and a nightmare, and if the entire album shares similar qualities to the track, we’re pretty stoked about it. The Holy Knives Tour Kickoff Party OK, so when these guys showed up on the scene a few years ago, I thought to myself, “Greaaaaat, another indie rock band that sounds like everyone else.” And while I was probably just sipping way too much Haterade that day (I was, and I’m sorry), this fivepiece have grown into an outfit that showcases their stellar creativity throughout their entire catalog, which in turn has made them a local favorite. Formerly known as Levees, The Holy Knives kind of are your archetypal indie rock band, but we don’t throw bands in this section of “shows to check out” if we didn’t think they’re worth your time. While, sure, The Holy Knives could easily show up on a mix next to bands like [insert your favorite indie rock band you discovered last week on Spotify] they’re just different enough to set themselves apart from the heard of new bands flooding your music channels. San Antonio-born and Austin-based, Alejandro Escovedo has quietly amassed a trove of off kilter roots-rock/outsider-Americana music. Through the course of his long run, Escovedo, now nearing 70, has helped shape the contemporary Americana milieu (especially in Texas) to a greater extent than his relatively low profile would give away.

Always one to push boundaries, taking risks and refusing to sit still, even while revering tradition, I think of him as kind of a South Texas Dwight Yoakam (in spirit, not in sound), who splits the difference between serving his own distinct muse and following in the footsteps of his heroes.

Jazz Floating On the River SAT-TUE

By way of putting those nifty new riverboats to good use, the Riverwalk folks have got a pretty sweet thing cooked up for this weekend. Jazz Floating on the River, in case the name itself doesn’t preclude the need for me to say any more, is a three-day opportunity to experience something that you just don’t see every day: a parade of jazz bands (from trios to brass crews and larger ensembles) on floats, drifting down the river. The idea is that you’ll find a perch at a favorite restaurant (somewhere along the 2.5 miles of Riverwalk that runs downtown) and enjoy a meal and/ or drinks with friends as you watch the concert float by. The water-borne entertainment will include more than 20 local jazz acts, representing just about everything the jazz spectrum has to offer, from Afro-Latin stylings to big band grooves, from jazz fusion to jazz funk, from the easy-going to the avant garde. If you’re not familiar with Jens Lekman, your music elitist girlfriend or boyfriend probably has heard of them and most likely made a few mix CDs (I know, I’m dating myself) with songs from Lekman alongside artists like fellow Swedish folkster Jose Gonzalez, The Knife, or Belle and Sebastian. But Lekman is a lot more approachable than your hipster friends want you to believe. While his music is a little more different than your average indie pop artist, Lekman’s music is reminiscent of everything from The Beatles to The Smiths.

Grinder Jens Lekman I’m always a little skeptical when checking out metal I haven’t listened to before. I admit it, I’m that asshole.

But. Holy. Fucking. Shit, you guys. Mammoth Grinder is probably one of the best metal bands I’ve never heard of, and if you dig death metal with echoey vocals and traces of hardcore (this is definitely not metalcore, guey), you’re gonna want to get to Paper Tiger on Sunday. Also on the bill are Afflictive Nature, who have a similar sound to Mammoth Grinder while leaning a little more in the hardcore direction, and Crawl, a on- man band whose sound can only be described as dark, and sludgy, like you’ve been trapped in a dungeon for a few years.
