SAPD releases immigrants in human smuggling case

The driver was arrested on December 23. The 11 adults and one minor riding in their semi-truck trailer were unharmed. The trip may have originated in Laredo. The passengers may be from Guatemala.

In the past few weeks, details surrounding a recent smuggling incident in Northeast San Antonio have slowly come into focus. But what's most remarkable about the case isn't the crime itself — it's how it was handled by the San Antonio Police Department.

Instead of calling U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement after arriving on the scene, SAPD Chief William McManus made the decision to handle the case at the state level. While it's uncommon for local law enforcement faced with an immigrationrelated crime to not hand the case over to a federal agency — it's a decision that McManus is allowed to make.

"This call was situational, based on a fairly fluid situation on the scene," he said at a Thursday, Jan. 4 press conference. "It's not necessarily how every case will be handled going forward."

After bringing the 12 passengers back to police headquarters for questioning, SAPD alerted Catholic Charities — an immigrant aid organization — to come pick them up, letting the passengers free without any charges or inquiries about their immigration status. The

driver, Herbert Alan Nichols, was arrested for breaking a state anti-smuggling law, a case that will land in Bexar Country District Attorney Nico LaHood's chambers instead of a federal courtroom.

Coming in the midst of a national (and local) debate over immigration law and the ability for a city to treat undocumented immigrants like regular citizens, McManus' "situational" decision has already attracted blunt criticism.

Councilman Greg Brockhouse told the Current he believed McManus had “more than enough probable cause” to assume the smuggled immigrants were undocumented — enough to prompt officers to at least run a criminal background check on the dozen, if not call in the feds.

“All I’m asking is that we make sure we’re not releasing a felon into the public,” Brockhouse said. “The policy can’t be on the fly ... based on what the chief feels like doing that day.”

He publicly questioned McManus’s decision in a Friday, Jan. 5 media release, suggesting the chief had dodged SAPD protocol.

But McManus didn't let the councilman's comments linger. Later that day, McManus responded to Brockhouses's concerns in an email to the Current.

"I gave no direction to skip or disregard

standard protocol or process," McManus wrote. "No background checks or fingerprints were taken of the 12 victims because it is against procedure to do so of victims of crime or witnesses to a crime, especially in the context of a human smuggling case."

According to McManus, an agent from U.S. Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) had been notified shortly after the arrest and was present when officers brought the 12 passengers in for questioning.

"At no time did SAPD restrict or prevent the HSI agent from taking custody of the individuals," McManus wrote.

If SAPD had continued to detain the passengers after they were questioned, the city may have faced legal liability, according to McManus.

SAPD's general manual echoes his claims. Under the "Human Trafficking" section (last revised in 2012), it reads: "Human Smuggling cases usually require the response of a federal law enforcement agency," but it doesn't mandate officers contact the feds on the scene. Only in the follow-up part of the investigation is an SAPD officer required to "notify and coordinate with federal authorities and provide assistance as necessary."

Aside from Brockhouse, no other city official has spoken out against McManus's decision. In an email, city spokeswoman Thea Setterbo confirmed that City Manager Sheryl Sculley (who oversees SAPD) "believes the Chief acted appropriately in handling this situation."

Regardless, the uncommon decision to hand this case over to the state has begun to gain national attention, specifically as it contrasts with the other San Antonio smuggling case that made national news this summer. In the July incident — where police found 10 dead, 22 living immigrants packed into the back of an unventilated semi-truck trailer — SAPD called ICE to investigate, not the state. In that case, the surviving passengers were held in a

Senator Dianne Feinstein has summoned Brad Parscale — web director of San Antonio’s Giles-Parscale design firm — to testify and submit documents to the Senate Judiciary Committee on any interaction he’s had with Russian nationals.

This, of course, has to do with Parscale’s integral role in Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, in which he led the team’s digital media efforts. As the main guy pouring campaign money into the Facebook advertisements and marketing strategies that ushered Trump into the White House, Parscale has inevitably been linked to those in Trump’s camp suspected of letting

Russia interfere with the 2016 election.

Parscale, who’s called the Trumps “family,” has previously denied any corroboration with Russia in regard to his campaign work.

In October 2017, Parscale told 60 Minutes’s Leslie Stahl that the idea of him working with the Russians was “a joke.”

“I know my own activities, and I know the activities of this campaign,” Parscale said. “I was there. It’s just a farce.”

And in May 2017, when accused of relying on Russia’s social media data to craft campaign ads, Parscale told Fox News he wouldn’t have needed any outside help. In his own (very Trump-esque) words,

detention center for over a month, and at least two were deported by ICE. According to Texas' smuggling law, law enforcement officials aren't required to prove if a smuggled victim is undocumented if it's clear the suspect wanted to "transport an individual with the intent to ... conceal the individual from a peace officer or special investigator." That's not the case in federal law, which explains why the July victims have been detained — or deported— since entering federal custody.

Which, according to local HSI and ICE agents, is standard protocol.

“I can’t recall a situation like this, where the state [or] local chose to use a state statute instead of letting us work the case," said Jerry Robinette, a former special agent in charge of HSI in San Antonio, in an interview with the Intercept. “Look, if this was a car that was driving to the grocery store with two or three illegal aliens, I could understand this situation, but not a tractor trailer."

McManus’ decision comes amid an ongoing national debate over so-called "sanctuary cities."

The discussion centers on whether or not local law enforcement agencies are required to comply with requests from ICE officials to detain immigrants suspected of being in the country illegally — even if they haven't officially been charged with a crime, or their charges have been dropped.

Texas's new law opposing sanctuary cities, Senate Bill 4, is currently being challenged by multiple Texas jurisdictions (including San Antonio) in the state court system. Meanwhile, acting ICE Director Thomas Homan has announced he wants to arrest political leaders in sanctuary cities.

Despite brushing up against a clearly contentious topic, McManus appeared unfazed at the Thursday press conference.

Asked by a reporter if he made the right decision in turning the case to over to the state, he didn't hesitate.

"Yes. That was absolutely in my mind the right decision at the time," he replied.

“We didn’t need [data] from anyone else, it was right here in the United States of America, and the best data is right here,” he said.

Sen. Feinstein, the ranking Democrat on the Judiciary Committee has also requested an interview with Dan Scavino, the Trump campaign’s social media director. Her December 3rd letter to Parscale was addressed to his San Antonio company, Giles-Parscale Inc., a company co-owned by Jill Giles that received a hefty $93 million for its work on the successful Trump campaign.

However, the local design firm, known for providing interior design and branding to the Pearl’s top residents (Hotel Emma, Supper, Local Coffee, Larder, and the Can Plant, to name a few), has tried its best to sever itself from the Trump brand.

That may be why Parscale moved the political arm of Giles-Parscale to Florida in June — leaving the more corporate and commercial efforts in San Antonio.

Especially because, according to several reports, Parscale is already actively involved in Trump’s re-election campaign planning.

Closing the divide within the city’s disjointed black community

I was leaving Rosario’s when I saw them, a bubbly black couple ... in Southtown.

What?! Our eyes met and we almost broke into the hand clapping game Celie did in The Color Purple. We laughed.

We talked. We exchanged contact information. It was kismet, serendipity, almost something out of a ’90s romcom. The conversation was flowing and I eventually asked them what part of town they lived in. They shook their heads.

“We’re only here for a conference. But what’s up with this place? Are there only like, two black people here?”

No — but it definitely feels like it.

San Antonio is a huge town that ,after decades of redlining practices, has remained largely economically and racially segregated. As much as the Eastside is branded the “black” side of town and is the historical center of blackness in San Antonio, it’s not the only place we are.

But why is it so hard for some of us to find each other?

It’s one of the many conversations I’ve had with other black transplants for the past two years. I don’t have the roots that it seems a lot of native black San Antonians do. I love San Antonio, I do.

But the sense of disconnect and isolation

isn’t something I made up in my head. It’s a constant talking point when I happen to not just be the only black person in the room. Many of us decide to leave, a few decide to stay. I’m somewhere in between.

The common reaction to criticism about this city are usually met with, “well, leave then!” The city is serving some people well, and that’s great. But a lot of the time it seems that “well” is confused with “well enough.” The city could be better for the people who’ve been here and the people who actually want to contribute positively to the city. I’m not talking about criticism from casual passersby. I’m talking about politicos, journalists, artists, business owners, medical practitioners, lawyers, and other professionals who want to pour their resources into this city.

You know, the kind of boon San Antonio seems to salivate over from old money in Austin and Dallas but seems averse to building in our backyards ... but that’s a conversation for another piece.

In September, I co-organized a benefit show with a friend who’s a local poet.

We had an interesting mix of talent but the thing most surprising was how many black artists who were legitimately good, like DFOY music or Dre Levelle, had never been featured in the showcase

put on by the Current or connected with local music writers or venues that actually support local talent.

Again, I get it. The bigger bands we do have will always turn a bigger profit — but it can’t keep being the same four bands every time. That’s not going to change so long as San Antonio doesn’t show up for local musicians because venues won’t see the reason to change it if we don’t show up. There shouldn’t be a huge reserve of undiscovered and underfunded talent in San Antonio’s black community, but there is. I’ve counted far too many friends with talent and grit who leave San Antonio for greener pastures and go on to make those pastures much greener.

How many more people do we have to lose before we cultivate an environment where they can flourish?

San Antonio has an established black social order for those born and raised here, particularly for those that go to church. But black folks under 40 want more than that, we deserve more than that. I’ve gone to many of the older black churches in this city. I’ve seen some of them die out. The traditions and stories of their members largely left untold; not passed on for future generations to venerate and rely on.

I’ve seen the disconnect of ridiculously talented black kids from Sam Houston, from Fox Tech, from Judson who never hear the words, “You are great,” in their classrooms from the ages of 5 to 18. I’ve watched generations bicker about how to approach social issues that affect all of us instead of uniting across sexual orientations, religions, and ages to stand together in the fight for change. I’ve watched areas slowly “redevelop,” pushing out families who’ve been here for a new, more “profitable” demographic. I’ve watched the Eastside continually be pimped out as something to profit off of or cast aside as a problem by politicians unwilling to listen to the solutions offered by its residents.

I’ve watched the fault line-like division between black and brown communities create incendiary reactions that further the divide. These issues are not going to go away overnight.

Before you assume I’ve just passively been observing this, let me explain how I’m actively trying to change it.

I started a social group called keepHer for women of color for this very reason.

There’s always been a huge disconnect amongst black women and Latinas. It’s like we’ve been pitted against each other

in a race no one actually wants to win. Even as both groups have made amazing contributions to the city’s landscape internally, the opportunity for dialogue and engagement has been limited to zero.

I hosted a panel exclusively of women of color at last year’s DreamWeek and the response was overwhelming: We want more of this.

I put on a mental health forum for that same group with the Movement Gallery and it’s been met with the same response: We need more of this.

We are hungry for opportunities to connect and grow and I’m encouraged by the work I’ve seen people like Franque Michelle put in with the Black Writers Group, the work Kinyo Laditan puts in with his weekly late-night show, “Go Live with Kinyo,” with the work local poets like Andrea “Vocab” Sanderson, Six Gawd, and Glo Armmer put into poetry events like 2nd Verse. I see us.

We’re trying to make it work with little to no support and often no resources.

I also understand the frustration with and suspicion of outside groups.

Media outlets that don’t reach out to the community to tell the story correctly, institutions and politicians that show up for the photo-op but not the work, figureheads that are all too willing to forgo the people that got them there once the check clears, the list goes on. I get it. But it’s time to connect the dots. The Current, the Rivard Report, the San Antonio Express-News — they need black voices telling our stories. Geekdom, Launch SA, and the Women’s Business Center need black business owners and startups telling their stories. City Hall is in desperate need of black San Antonians to tell our stories. Why? Because it makes no sense for there to be such a wealth of untapped brilliance and not have it celebrated. Our perspectives are important. Our ideas have merit. Our contributions are vital.

Immigrant Rights After the 85th Legislative Session and the End of DACA Immigrant rights advocates spent 2017 fighting political moves that would significantly impact the lives of undocumented immigrants, on both a state and national level. Last summer, the Texas Legislature passed Senate Bill 4, known as an anti-sanctuary, “show me your papers” law, and later in the year, President Donald Trump announced he’d be ending DACA, the program that allowed undocumented people who had arrived in the U.S. as children to legally live and work here.

This presentation organized by the Mexican American Legal Defense Fund will discuss the impact those moves will have on the immigrant community, and inform community members how to get involved with legislation. Billed as “the OUR TOP PICKS FOR THE WEEK ART first official art exhibition” to be staged in conjunction with the Alamo City’s yearlong Tricentennial celebration, “Kunst/Arte: A Dialogue” explores the creative common ground between “the two largest immigration groups that shaped the image and face of San Antonio.” Organized by the Lone Star Art Alliance (a statewide nonprofit with ties to Germany, Italy, India, Peru and Mexico), hosted by the Mexican Cultural Institute (in collaboration with the Consulate General of Mexico in San Antonio) and curated by German transplant Angelika Jansen (who helps facilitate the Blue Star Berlin Residency), the two-man show finds parallels in the exuberant, color-rich works of Alejandro Colunga and Klaus Killisch. A native of Guadalajara, Colunga studied architecture and even joined the circus before developing his artistic style — which marries elements of surrealism, folk art and fantasy in paintings and sculptural projects. As for Berlin-based Killisch, his THU poppy, mixed-media paintings blur lines between figuration and abstraction while maintaining an underlying sense of nostalgia. Beyond the “cultural dialogue” on view in the gallery, both artists will be working with SAY Sí, Clark High School, Trinity University and UTSA, and conducting one-onone studio visits with students. Known for boldly playful and nostalgic works populated by unicorns, kitty cats, rainbows and other hallmarks of childhood innocence, San Antonio-based artist Jen Frost Smith presents her “colorful paintings, funny drawings, assemblages and installation” as catalysts to conjure “good juju” and counteract “the harsh reality of the world.” Marking Frost Smith’s second creative endeavor with Brooklyn-based Madeleine Cutrona (a fellow Maryland Institute College of Art alum who “makes art about the world around her and the world she wants to exist”), the exhibition “Waiting Garden” tasked the likeminded artists with collaborating remotely from their home bases. If you were to ask River City Wrestling promoter Brandon Oliver to pick his Top Five wrestlers of all time, there’s no doubt in his mind that Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat would be on that list. It’s probably why Oliver, who has headed the RCW for the last 16 years, invited the WWE Hall of Fame grappler to headline his upcoming wrestling event in Kirby, Texas. When Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella first premiered on CBS as a made-for-television musical starring Julie Andrews in 1957, it was seen by an audience of over 100 million people. Creative Creatures 4-Year Anniversary Party

Last year was a big one for Creative Creatures — the multidisciplinary brainchild of married artists Karen and Eddy Rios. Lasting Legacy DreamWeek ushers in SA’s 50th MLK March

Every year for half a century now, San Antonians of all racial, ethnic, cultural, religious and socioeconomic backgrounds have come together, in consistently multiplying droves, to march in celebration of the legacy and hopeful vision of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In a city that historically compromises, heals and ameliorates conflict well, it still surprises some to know that, every year on the third Monday in January (designated for MLK Jr. Day), our MLK March is one of the largest, if not the largest, in the nation.

In 2011, it was trying to fully comprehend the meaning and potential of our especially hearty MLK March that led Nigerian immigrant, activist and entrepreneur Shokare Nakpodia to launch DreamVoice LLC, an organization dedicated to realizing Dr. King’s vision of laying “the foundations of tolerance, equality and diversity by creating dialogue across cultures and communities.”

The small but dedicated DreamVoice team is not affiliated with San Antonio’s MLK Jr. Commission, which puts the march together every year, but has been inspired by what the march says about our city’s propensity for supporting civil, solution-seeking discourse between folks across the ideological spectrum, from all parts of town (perhaps even from all over the world).

First held in 2013, the DreamWeek summit looks to tap into this potential and into all the energy surrounding our celebration of Dr. King’s example. Over the years, the summit has exploded, gaining community, sponsor and city support with each new incarnation. This year’s sixth annual DreamWeek is the biggest one yet — featuring more than 200 events (from talks and film screenings to performances, art exhibits, and so much more) that span a little more than two weeks (beginning last Friday, January 5).

Nakpodia, who spoke with the Current just before DreamWeek 2018’s kickoff, was quick to stress that “this is a community event, put on by the efforts and accommodation of the whole community, from businesses and sponsors to those that offer their space, from volunteers

and attendees to those that participate in events.”

“The City of San Antonio,” Nakpodia said, “should [also] be given a lot of credit, for how it has always fostered the march and how it has supported DreamWeek.”

Nakpodia, who didn’t want to politicize his message by talking too directly about our current political climate, speaks of DreamWeek’s value and vision in terms of true diversity and “being open to all viewpoints” even, and especially, when they diverge from one’s own. This is the legacy of Dr. King, the great peacemaker who, emboldened by his core Christian beliefs, called us to love our detractors and seek understanding with those we disagree with.

Despite San Antonio’s relative remoteness from the 1960s Civil Rights Movement as such, King’s legacy thrives here. Nakpodia wants us to see the march’s continued success in these terms: as proof that “dreams can bubble up in surprising places, in surprising ways” as they come to fruition.

Nakpodia urges us, even with all the work toward equality, peace and understanding that we have left to do, to see the 50th anniversary of our MLK March as a moment to also celebrate just “how much progress we have been able to make since Dr. King.”

Playwright Jesus Alonzo tackles grief and mourning in The After-Life >In The After-Life, playwright Jesus Alonzo explores the concept of loss.

Directed by Jose DeHoyos and produced

by Teatro Audaz, the play comprises five short stories and comes nearly nine years after his last work, Miss America: A Mexicanito Fairy’s Tale, was presented at the Esperanza Peace and Justice Center.

On Thursday, Teatro Audaz will present a staged reading at the McNay featuring two acts from The After-Life. There are plans for a full staging of the play later this year.

Alonzo, who has become known for his bold, unapologetic works depicting queer Chicano life in South Texas, reveals a yearslong process that dates to 2009 during the production of Miss America. That play starred the late Erica Andrews (pictured), one of San Antonio’s most beloved drag icons.

“We formed a friendship and she revealed another side of her that only her close friends knew. I wanted to write a story that would honor this magnificent person,” Alonzo said.

Those experiences led to the writing of a fictional tale inspired by the life of Andrews that is now the first act in The After-Life. “I didn’t know I had written my homage to her before she had died,” Alonzo said. Andrews, who also starred in Alonzo’s first play, Jotos del Barrio, shocked the gay community when she unexpectedly passed away in 2013 due to complications from a lung infection.

“I really started questioning, ‘How do we embrace loss? How do we get through loss?’” Alonzo explained. “Loss is not just death but it’s something that comes in every shape and style and manifests itself in us in such crazy ways.”

The remaining short tales in The After-Life approach loss from different standpoints: the loss of innocence, the loss of place and the loss of wealth, yet, each piece points to the ephemeral nature of life.

One of the most challenging aspects so far has been the audition process.

While San Antonio may boast of great talent on its local stages, Alonzo says he needed actors who understood the life experiences of his queer Latino characters.

“I don’t necessarily want actors with a ton of experience because that’s not the teatro we’ve done,” Alonzo explained. “The teatro we’ve done has been done in the streets and by everyday people, guerilla-style ...

The majority of the actors in my plays had little acting experience but they have been brilliant.” The current cast of The After-Life includes Gabriel Luera, Ceasar Dueñas, Luis Garcia Jr., and Amber Nixx in the role inspired by Andrews.

While the show is being presented during a time when minority rights are seemingly under attack, Alonzo explains that the first draft of the play was actually finished five years ago, long before the current president had announced his candidacy. Yet, the mere act of presenting queer, multi-racial, transgender characters that live their truth seems a political act in itself.

The Post is another Spielberg classic

Most Steven Spielberg films begin not by introducing the main characters or diving into the plot, but by instead offering a cinematic jolt. Mostly unrelated to the central story, this opening scene teases viewers into the narrative while establishing tone. Think of the unknown swimmer getting chomped to begin Jaws (and actress Susan Backlinie reprising that intro in 1941), the discovery of the World War II airplanes in Close Encounters of the Third Kind and the opening chase in E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial.

The Post is no different. It starts not in the newsroom of The Washington Post, or by introducing Tom Hanks as Executive Editor Ben Bradlee and Meryl Streep as Publisher Katharine Graham. Instead, it opens in the jungles of Vietnam. But, fittingly, that’s where the heart of the movie actually lies. After all, this is the story of the 1971 publication of the Pentagon Papers: classified documents that reveal how every president from Truman to Nixon lied about Vietnam and, by doing so, unnecessarily precipitated the slaughter of 58,220 Americans.

The film, adhering to its title, focuses on The Washington Post and not The New York Times, which might seem disrespectful considering the latter paper’s

larger role in the Pentagon Papers’ publication. But Spielberg’s cinematic decision is the right one thanks to the unique circumstances of the Post, which was often regarded at the time as a local family newspaper. Still, the Times is not ignored, and the competition between the two papers makes for some delicious “inside baseball” moments, just as it did in Alan Pakula’s All the President’s Men. (Kudos to writers Liz Hannah and Josh Singer for juggling many characters, as Singer did in Spotlight.)

Speaking of All the President’s Men, The Post is the perfect prequel. In many ways, though, it’s the antithesis of that earlier film, which concentrated on newbie reporters and the excruciatingly tedious grunt work of investigative journalism. The Post, conversely, is more about big decisions by big bosses. The intriguing interaction of Bradlee and Graham (the first woman to head a Fortune 500 company) is front and center, while the latter character wasn’t even featured in All the President’s Men. If she had been, Patricia Neal and Lauren Bacall were the rumored frontrunners for the role, probably because Streep was then just 27 years old.

Now that Streep is the right age, she’s wonderful — and better than Hanks, who, though effective, is simply too

much like himself (with a sporadic Boston brogue) to make you forget Jason Robards’ Oscar-winning turn. Bob Odenkirk (reporter Ben Bagdikian) and Tracy Letts (Post chairman Fritz Beebe) are also noteworthy, and it’s fun to watch David Cross tackle Managing Editor Howard Simons, whom Martin Balsam portrayed back in ’76.

The Post differs from Pakula’s film stylistically too.

While the older movie was grittier, with arguably smarter dialogue and sharper performances, Spielberg’s creation is just what you would expect: brilliantly shot, tightly edited, entertaining and insightful, but perhaps a bit too slick. (John Williams’ score is good but maybe too prominent.)

The National Board of Review named The Post the best film of 2017, which it isn’t. But it is the greatest newspaper movie since All the President’s Men, the best film about journalism since 1987’s Broadcast News and Spielberg’s finest since Saving Private Ryan two decades ago.

Graham tells Bradlee that her husband called newspapers “the first rough draft of history.” But The Post is not a rough draft. It is thoughtful, polished craftsmanship by a filmmaker still near the top of his game, and it’s more necessary than ever. sacurrent.com • January 10-16, 2018 • CURRENT 27

“I wanted to do an event my way,” Dady said.

“It’s still a food festival with chefs, wine, food, beer, but we wanted to knock it down a notch and make it more casual, chill and fun. We want to focus on the chefs having a great time.”

The set-up is reminiscent of late food writer Josh Ozersky’s brainchild known as Meatopia with chefs from across San Antonio and the nation bringing their talents to the Alamo City. Dady’s inviting chef friends he’s made at various food events around the globe including fellow Iron Chef-testant Shota Nakajima of Seattle. The interior of the The Point is in the process of being remodeled into a coffee bar with cafe-style seating.

According to Aguirre, who shared the news via Instagram, the shop will be partnered exclusively with Quantum Roasters, owned and roasted by Fidel Moreno, an AP Physics instructor at Clark High School and adjunct professor at Northwest Vista.

The space, Aguirre said, will go on to feature baked goods from the Bagel Factory, Quantum’s beans and merchandise, and other goods from local vendors usually found at The Point’s monthly marker’s market. A bottle shop is also in the works for the space.

The Point Coffe House will initially serve drip coffee with plans for an extended espresso menu in the future.

Eventually, Moreno will bring his roaster to the facility.

“It’s in the garage now, and it’s getting a little cramped,” Moreno said. The unlikely roaster first learned how to fire up coffee beans from one of his high school students using a one-pound tabletop roaster. Nowadays, his industrial roaster has helped him increase production to five pounds every 15 minutes.

“The kitchen used to be a complete mess and I somehow got my wife on board,” Moreno said.

So many food and beverages businesses started and grew right here before our very eyes. Food truck operators have succeeded, supported their families, put themselves through school and gone on to open notable Restaurants here in SATX. Steve and I are switching our focus to a new project and have decided to close Eat Bar as of 1/15/2018,” Newman said of the closing via email.

Alamo Street Eat Bar did in fact serve as a starting pad for several food trucks including Where Y’at by Pieter Sypesteyn (of The Cookhouse, NOLA Brunch & Beignets and Bud’s Rotisserie). Truly the unofficial entrance to Southtown when it opened in March of 2012, Alamo Street Eat Bar served as an introduction to the rest of the area’s eclectic fare.

“We’re shifting our focus and I had to free up some time. I had to give Alamo Street up,” Newman says.

The shift in focus will mean she can concentrate on opening up the second location of The Friendly Spot on the city’s Southside on a “raw piece of land” the Newmans purchased seven months ago. She projects an opening date within the next 18 months.

Big Red & Barbacoa Festival sets a date

Malinalli Bakery is making a comeback

>Croissants will not be a thing of the past for Malinalli Bakery, which closed the bistro part of its operation at the tail end of 2017.

Instead, the bakery has announced it’s reopened its doors to customers seeking an extended coffee menu, hand-rolled croissants and sandwiches as of January 2. The year is already looking up.

The shop first opened in 2013 with interior Mexican favorites and fresh-baked breads and desserts. Though

>Come Spring Break, the San Antonio Botanical Garden will look seriously different. After showcasing its new digs last October, the garden is still working to unveil the Family Adventure Garden with 15 new areas this spring.

Along with those updates, coffee lovers will be able to find a new caffeination station with the opening of Rosella at the Garden in the Sullivan Carriage House.

Technically in the works since October, Rosella at the Garden is part of the coffee company’s aggressive expansion that includes Rosella at the Rand, a mini Rosella at H-E-B Alon Market, and a Rosella at Methodist Hospital in the Medical Center. Two more locations are planned for H-E-B at Lincoln Heights and in Southtown.

Rosella at the Garden will take up the entire first floor of the Carriage House, including the footprint of the former gift shop. The new shop will carry over some items from the flagship on Jones, while adding lighter salads by chef Rafael Pena, and a full liquor license. According to owner Charles Gonzalez, hours will vary from the Garden.

Indoor seating, he guestimates, will be around 40 or 50 with 35 or more seats available on the patio. — JE

Cullum’s Attagirl has launched lunch

>At almost three years old, Cullum’s Attagirl is making some changes to its lineup by adding lunch service starting at 11 a.m.

The shop, owned by Chris Cullum, has been filling bellies with Southern fried wings, fried bologna sandwiches and a tight list of beers on tap and in bottle since opening in 2015, but the kitchen was recently expanded to include a full fryer. Good-bye, tabletop fryers.

Menu items for lunch will include various wing combos, a wedge salad with house-made ranch, and a new option for boneless wings for the time being. Two styles of fries were also added to the menu. Prices for lunch will range from $10 to $12. An expanded brunch is part of the new offerings as well with hours ranging from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sundays.

“I’m not done yet,” Cullum said. “I don’t know what people want from us for lunch, so I’m trying to see where I can go with Attagirl.”

Lunch hours will be 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. with the bar remaining open through closing time.

KATY PERRY According to Rolling Stone, pop singer Katy Perry’s last tour in 2015, which sold out over 150 locations, was hailed as “a show to damage retinas and blow minds,” which sounds awesome. Will this tour stack up to 2015’s? Now, it’s not like we don’t get down with pop music, since we reviewed Janet Jackson last year and even traveled to Austin to see Lady Gaga (we’re still a little salty she didn’t come here). But, it takes maybe a little more for us to get excited, especially with the controversy over cultural appropriation (like she definitely wore corn rows and ate watermelon in the “This is How We Do Video,” which she did apologize for but, still, really Katy?). BETTYE LAVETTE It’s not every day a soul singer from the ’60s teams up with a rock ’n’ roll band to put out a record, but that’s exactly what happened when singer Bettye Lavette joined forces with Southern alt-rockers Drive By Truckers to produce the 2007 album The Scene of the Crime. Before hanging out with the Georgia based group, Lavette got her start in the the Detroit club scene in the 1960s and wound up going on tour with the then-newcomer Otis Redding after recording her first single “My Man — He’s a Lovin’ Man” at only 16 years old. Though Lavette continued to perform and record over the years, it wouldn’t be until 2005’s I’ve Got My Own Hell To Raise did she really break out into mainstream circuits. I’ve Got My Own Hell To Raise was a cover album of songs written by artists like Fiona Apple and Dolly Parton and was released on punk rock label Epitaph’s sister label Anti-, which hosts a strange combination of artists and bands including rapper Sage Francis, and indie rockers Wilco, to name a few.

One of the big components that makes this show stand out from its counterparts is the amazing jazz-fusion soundtrack composed

by Yoko Kanno and Seatbelts, a diverse band Kanno formed to create the music for the series, with a principal focus in jazz. But Chico California’s Armed For Apocalypse, made up from ex-members of Number One Gun (Tooth and Nail Records), manage to do just this with their eclectic sound. Combining that classic California beatdown hardcore sound similar to bands like Throwdown, Armed For Apocalypse manage to mix in elements of doomy Southern sludge reminiscent of the likes of Eyehategod.
