Because the topic of appropriation is more relevant and important than ever today, there are, consequently, more fine lines to tread. As a result, I’m sure it feels difficult for any restaurant owner to “do it right” without offending anyone when opening or operating a restaurant. I get it. However, this also isn’t an excuse for anyone who may be, intentionally or unintentionally, appropriating cultures through their food.

Particularly with Asian food in San Antonio, I’ve seen my fair share of examples of purposeful whitewashing, opening an Asian concept because it’s hip and cool, or cooking Asian food just because it’s “different”, etc. If you’re going to tell a story, please tell it properly (and if we’re being fair, there are some Asian-owned places here appropriating other cultures, too) — especially when SA's Asian cuisine is finally somewhere in between nascent and burgeoning. If we do it properly, the result of not appropriating is a more informed and open-minded diner — which ultimately presses the city to become more diverse and welcoming. Ask yourself a couple questions.

Are you skipping the due diligence and research?

Are you disrespecting the food & culture? Are you purposefully misrepresenting, diluting, or washing the integrity of the culture? If you answered “Yes” to any of the questions above, it does not make you a bad person (unless you fail to recognize what you’re doing or refuse to change), it simply means we are all lucky enough to live in a progressforward country where inclusion and equality are at the forefront of our discussions. Remember that impact will always overshadow intent. No one cares what you meant to say with your food.

They’ll only judge you based off of how they feel.

Let’s hope we can all continue to tell the stories of our culture through food to further empower the city and to become a more diverse and beautiful amalgamation of people and cultures.

At 11:20 the morning of Sunday, Nov. 5, a 26-year-old man dressed in all black wearing a bulletproof vest crossed Highway 87 into the grassy lawn of First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs, and began shooting.

He continued shooting as he entered the church, peppering the small congregation inside with bullets. Law enforcement officials say that everyone inside First Baptist that morning was either wounded or killed by the bullets from Devin Patrick Kelley’s semi-automatic rifle. Kelley took the lives of at least 26 people — or, seven percent of the entire population of Sutherland Springs, a small Wilson County town about 40 miles east of San Antonio.

Twenty people were sent to the hospital, some with lifethreatening injuries.

After exiting the church, Kelley was shot by neighbor Stephen Willeford, prompting him to drop his rifle and run to his car in an attempt to escape. But Johnnie Langendorff, a Seguin resident who witnessed this confrontation from his car, picked up Willeford and the two sped off after Kelley, who was headed north. The men eventually found Kelley’s car on the side of the road near the Guadalupe County line.

Kelley was inside, dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The Sunday attack was the deadliest mass shooting in Texas history. It is the 307th mass shooting in the United States this year, coming just a month after a gunman in Las Vegas killed 58 people attending an outdoor concert.

“There are so many families that have lost family members.

The tragedy is worsened that it happened in a church, a place of worship,” said Governor Greg Abbott at a Sunday evening press conference. “I ask that every mom and dad

put your arm around your kid tonight and let them know how much you love them. Tell your friends and neighbors that you support them and will work with them.”

Information about the dead has slowly begun to emerge.

The youngest victim in the church was 18-months-old, and the oldest was 72. At least 12 of the 26 dead were children.

Eight people who died were from the same family, and spanned three generations. One victim was pregnant. One of the victims was the 14-year-old daughter of First Baptist’s head pastor Frank Pomeroy.

“That’s the thing that is going to keep us strong is knowing in our faith, they are with their lord and savior right now,” said Pomeroy, who was out of town the day of the shooting.

The concrete details of Kelley’s motives for shooting up a peaceful church remain fuzzy, but some clues have begun to come into focus.

According to federal records, Kelley served in the Air Force from 2010 and 2014, where he was stationed at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico. In 2012, however, Kelley was court-martialed and convicted for assaulting his first wife and young child. He was sentenced to a year in prison. The felony lost him his Air Force ranking — and stuck him with a “bad conduct” discharge from the military. Unlike a dishonorable discharge, veterans with a bad conduct charge can still legally own a gun. Kelley obtained a divorce in 2012, and remarried to his current wife, Danielle Shields, in 2014.

Kelley’s domestic abuse didn’t stop in New Mexico.

Freeman Martin told reporters that Kelley has previously sent his mother-in-law “threatening text messages.”

Perhaps because of the previous criminal charges, Kelley does not have a license to carry a gun in Texas. But somehow all three of the guns found in his possession on Sunday had been purchased by Kelley, both in Texas and Colorado.

Regardless, conservative politicians have stood by the now-common GOP response to mass gun violence: This isn’t about gun control.

“This isn’t a guns situation,” said President Donald Trump in a Monday press briefing. Instead, he called the shooting was a “mental health problem at the highest level.” This comes months after Trump merrily repealed an Obama-era regulation that was meant to keep guns out of the hands of people with a mental illness.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, a longtime opponent to gun laws, was quick to dismiss changes in gun policy.

“You can’t necessarily keep guns out of the hands of people who are going to violate the law. If somebody is willing to kill someone, they’re also going to be willing to violate a gun law,” Paxton said. “All I can say is that in Texas at least we have the opportunity to have concealed carry. And so if it’s a place where somebody has the ability to carry, there’s always the opportunity that a gunman will be taken out before he has the opportunity to kill very many people.”

And Vice President Mike Pence, who’s received tens of thousands of campaign donations from gun lobby groups during his career, plans on visiting Sutherland Springs on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, liberal representatives have called this a moment to reconsider Texas’ lax gun laws.

“These are human acts of terror and violence.

There is a human solution to them beyond offering prayers,” wrote El Paso Congressman Beto O’Rourke in a blog post.

“We know that guns designed to kill as many people as possible as quickly as possible — designed for use by militaries to kill enemy soldiers — will be used by some to kill people efficiently and effectively when they are sold to civilians.”

He joined dozens of other state and national lawmakers in urging Congress to start a real debate and discussion on the issue of gun violence.

The small community of Sutherland Springs has already held a number of church services and candlelight vigils to support the families. Most remain in shock.

“Our church was not comprised of members or parishioners — we were a very close family,” said Sherri Pomeroy, the wife of First Baptist pastor Frank. “We ate together, we laughed together, we cried together and we prayed together. Now most of our church family is gone. Please don’t forget Sutherland Springs.”

Texas Congressman (and vocal climate change denier) is retiring

San Antonio Congressman Lamar Smith has announced he will not be running for re-election in 2018.

Smith, a Republican, has represented Texas’ 21st congressional district — an area including the Northeast side of San Antonio, Southwest Austin, and most of the Texas Hill Country west of I-35 — for 30 years straight.

“For several reasons, this seems like a good time to pass on the privilege of representing the 21st District to someone else,” he wrote in an email first obtained by the Texas Tribune. “With over a year remaining in my term, there is still much to do. There is legislation to enact, dozens of hearings to hold and hundreds of votes to cast.”

Smith, one of the most vocal climate change deniers on Capitol Hill, ironically chairs the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology. While holding this powerful position, he’s accused scientific researchers of falsifying data that proves that the world is warming — all while protecting the major oil and gas companies that directly contribute to climate change. Scientist organizations have called him a “modern-day McCarthy” for the way he’s

attempted to control the national narrative on global warming.

Smith was one of the first members of Congress to endorse Donald Trump in the presidential election, and has borrowed some of the president’s rhetoric in committee hearings (one anti-EPA hearing came with the title: “Make the EPA Great Again”). Smith, a foe of the “liberal media,” once said the only way to get the “unvarnished truth” is to get your news “directly from the president.” Unsurprisingly, he’s called reporting that documents climate change “fake news.”

Smith grabbed headlines in 2011 for spearheading a bill called the Stop Online Piracy Act, or SOPA. Under the guise of fighting online copyright infringement, SOPA threatened the U.S. with sweeping internet censorship — and was ultimately extinguished. SOPA would have benefited companies like Verizon, Time Warner and AT&T, some of Smith’s top campaign donors.

This news makes Smith the 13th member of the U.S. House to announce his retirement this term — 12 of those members are Republican. In a Nov. 2 conference call, Smith told reporters that the political climate on Capitol Hill had no impact on his decision to step down. In fact, he said Trump “deserves a lot more credit” for his work in the White House.

No one has announced interest in filling Smith’s seat in the majority-Republican 21st District — yet. But Smith said he’s “confident it will be a Republican.”

SAPD detective fired for mishandling dozens of sexual assault cases

The San Antonio Police Department has released details on how a single Special Victims Unit Detective neglected to properly investigate dozens of crimes — most involving sexual assault.

Detective Kenneth L. Valdez was indefinitely suspended from the SVU on November 2 for a number of violations taking place over of the past two years, according a suspension report obtained by the Current. The document, signed by SAPD Chief William McManus, indicates that Valdez specifically worked on cases related to sexual assault.

SAPD alleges that for an entire year (from August 2016 to August 2017) Valdez failed to submit forensic evidence to the Bexar County crime lab for any the 27 cases he was assigned to investigate over that time period. Of the 27 cases, 17 contained evidence that specifically needed forensic testing. The report claims Valdez also failed to properly take care of evidence recovered in an investigation — inspectors found unmarked cell phones, DVDs, CDs and cash in his office, along with several unmarked envelopes containing saliva swabs taken from a person’s mouth.

At least twice, Valdez did not follow up on crucial information given to him from the crime lab about possible suspects in his cases. The report mentions one of his cases where he “failed to act” after learning that a known suspect’s DNA was found on a victim. He instead concealed the information and closed the case without his supervisor’s approval.

“This is ongoing and continuing conduct,” the report repeatedly states. “The actions of [Valdez] did not conform to the ordinary and reasonable rules of good conduct and behavior and/or brought reproach and discredit on himself and the San Antonio Police Department.”

Valdez’ firing comes a week after Chief McManus announced that the SVU had failed to “properly investigate” at least 130 cases. It’s unknown if Valdez is the only SVU member guilty of this charge.

“There simply is no excuse for such improper behavior, and Detective Valdez is not representative of the thousands of men and women in our police department who are passionately committed to protecting the most vulnerable among us,” said

San Antonio City Manager Sheryl Sculley in a press release. She said the City Attorney’s office has already begun an external investigation into how SVU handles its cases.

“The mishandling of these cases cannot be taken lightly, and today’s response was in keeping with the seriousness of the situation,” said Mayor Ron Nirenberg shortly after Valdez’ hiring was made public. “We will ensure that systemic issues discovered by the independent investigation are resolved and justice is delivered.” sacurrent.com • November 8-14, 2017 • CURRENT 13

Carrying on a yearlong string of practicing artists guest-curating the series (which annually invites three guest curators to each select a trio of artists — one from Texas, one from elsewhere in the U.S. and one from abroad — to “live and create art in San Antonio for two months”), Brooklyn/Austin-based Michael Smith summoned a performative and collaborative spirit by uniting Heyd Fontenot (Dallas), Martha Wilson (New York) and Lili Reynaud-Dewar (France/Switzerland).

A truly versatile artist whose work tackles cultural norms, spirituality, morality and sexuality, Fontenot is perhaps known best for paintings and drawings that put an intimate, slightly playful spin on portraiture, but he’s spent his time at Artpace building THU an “occupied installation” that invites both exploration and interpretation. Having creatively investigated unlikely intersections between Martin Luther King Jr., cyborgs and blinged-out teeth covers known commonly as “grills,” Reynaud-Dewar went west to shoot a short horror film amid the stark, dramatic vistas of Marfa. Hailed as a pioneering feminist artist who founded the avant-garde art space Franklin Furnace in New York circa 1976, Wilson expanded her “First Ladies” self-portrait series with a new video piece in which she stars as Melania Trump. MUSIC In a musical landscape littered with “genreless” artists, Los Lobos stand out as fusionist pioneers with an undying love of experimentation. Rising out of ’70s-era East LA with a repertoire that blurred blues, roots and Mexican folkloric sounds, the group scored a Grammy before their major label debut (1984’s How Will the Wolf Survive?) and reached the masses in 1987 with a chart-topping cover of Ritchie Valens’ classic “La Bamba.” Touted by critics for their surreal 1992 album Kiko, the band returns to Gruene Hall for an evening sure to be peppered with eclectic favorites spanning four decades, along with hidden gems from their latest (2015’s Gates of Gold) and hopefully the whimsical 2009 tribute Los Lobos Goes Disney.

WORDS Locals and tourists alike are likely to have colorful memories of San Antonio’s historic Market FRI + SAT Square in central downtown. South Texas native Edna Campos Gravenhorst has released a book delving into the history and significance of the 210’s “El Mercado,” titled San Antonio’s Historic Market Square. She’s an established author and certified San Antonio tourism ambassador (so basically, she knows her stuff). As the book informs the reader, San Antonio’s founding in 1718 prompted a demand for plazas with businesses and parks. The city’s growth meant relocating the established markets, eventually giving way to a farmers market that developed into the Market Square we now know for its shops, tourist stops and late-night bites at Mi Tierra. In the 1970s, Paco de Lucía revolutionized the art of flamenco. Along with his virtuosic guitar playing, de Lucía incorporated the Afro-Peruvian sounds of the cajón, and collaborated with musicians as far-ranging as Al Di Meola, Chick Corea and Carlos Santana. On Friday, longtime de Lucía collaborator and producer Javier Limón will reassemble the band that toured with the guitar master during the last 10 years of his life for a performance at the Empire. In May of 2012, de Lucía played his final U.S. tour date at Austin’s Riverbend Centre before his untimely death two years later. If you were lucky enough to catch that show, then you’re familiar with the magnitude of talent this ensemble boasts, from guitarist Antonio Sánchez (who happens to be de Lucía’s nephew) to vocalist David de Jacoba and dancer Farruco (the brother of the great flamenco dancer Farruquito). ‘The Difference Between a Flower and a Weed Is Seeing’

Although it’s not uncommon for students to make memorable waves within San Antonio’s art scene, few in recent memory have done so with the concentrated vision and professionalism Iowa native Justin Korver displayed in his MFA thesis show “The SAT Expressive Mark & Other Ideas I Stole from Painting” (exhibited this past summer at UTSA’s offsite gallery Terminal 136). Having previously caught our attention with mixed-media sculpture and installations — frequently challenging gender confines while placing familiar materials and found objects in curious configurations — Korver developed a fairly recognizable aesthetic built around hardware, paint and other supplies one might pick up at a home-improvement store. While there’s enchantment to be found in his monochromatic pegboard assemblages, brilliantly adorned work gloves and everyday tools caked or dripping with layers of paint, Korver’s latest endeavors mark an intriguing shift into softer territory. Evidenced by his Instagram feed, his new solo show “The Difference Between a Flower and a Weed Is Seeing” puts a meditative, almost artisanal spin on a developing body of work from an artist worth keeping an eye on. In an era riddled with xenophobia, “sanctuary cities” crackdowns, “show me your papers” laws, ignorance amidst crisis, and troubling headlines such as “Nearly Half of Americans Don’t Know Puerto Ricans Are Fellow Citizens” (The New York Times, September 6, 2017), the exhibition title “$t@tU.S.? Prints from Puerto Rico to San Antonio” conjures plenty — even without visual reference. Curated by UTSA associate professor Dr. Teresa Eckmann and hosted by Centro de Artes in collaboration with the Puerto Rican Heritage Society of San Antonio, the group show juxtaposes prints created between the 1950s and the present day by celebrated Puerto Rican printmaker Antonio Martorell (as well as his contemporaries and students) with works from seven San Antonio artists who work within the realm of serigraphy. For those of us who remember the excitement and fresh joy of the very first Luminaria multimedia bonanza, which was hosted in and around Alamo Plaza, it’s hard to believe that the fest has been bringing the arts to light for 10 years now.

Back in 2008, then-mayor Phil Hardberger, who has a laudable track record of supporting the arts in San Antonio, proposed Luminaria as something of an answer to Paris’ Nuit Blanche and Madrid’s Noche Blanca, two well-established, nighttime, all-arts blowouts with carnival vibes.

Since its beginning, Luminaria has traveled to a few different urban footprints, put on consistently excellent (and consistently improving) programs, improvised well when faced with mother nature’s fickleness, and gained a permanent year-round director in Kathy Armstrong (who took the reins in 2015).

For its 10th run, on November 10 and 11, Luminaria will return to Hemisfair (where it was held from 2011 to 2013) and present daytime offerings in Southtown The Arts District (STAD).

Armstrong told the Current that she’s excited to be partnered “with organizations that have a proven history of advocating and promoting the arts,” citing as examples the Mexican Cultural Institute, Magik Theatre, STAD, and the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM).

It’s worth noting, of course, that Luminaria isn’t returning to the same Hemisfair that hosted the affair years ago. Recent improvements make it an even more ideal locale for a nighttime arts festival like this. “In the redevelopment of Hemisfair,” Armstrong noted, “they worked with artists to create site-specific works,” showing the developers’ commitment to art in public spaces.

Of Luminaria’s staying power, as it celebrates its first decade, Armstrong is quick to pass on the credit to others. “It is a testament to the strength and growth of San Antonio’s arts community,” she said.

In terms of musical acts, Luminaria has typically focused largely on the local side, embracing traditional sounds as well as newer, more experimental projects. This year’s musical program is, quite possibly, Luminaria’s best yet. Curated mostly by local musician Garrett T. Capps, the lineup boasts local, national and international talent, representing an array of styles.

First and foremost, Baltimore’s Lower Dens will return to San Antonio for Luminaria, bringing its psychedelic, shoegaze-influenced brand of dream-pop to the Main Stage on Friday night.

Performing directly before Lower Dens on the Main Stage will be Austin experimental electronic/psych-pop crew The Octopus Project, whose oft-cinematic music is practically tailor-made for an artful turn up in a vibrant urban area. On the international front, Japanese avant-garde percussionist and acoustic sound artist Tatsuya Nakatani, known for challenging perceptions of beauty in music while still appealing to more traditional aesthetics, will perform an entirely improvised composition in Yanaguana Garden (also on Friday). Other acts playing on Friday include Henry Brun & The Latin Playerz, heavy surf outfit King Pelican (performing an instrumental/visual piece about the 1968 World’s Fair at Hemisfair) and the flute and percussion act Peterson/Hayes Duo. This year’s Luminaria will also feature a stage at Magik Theatre curated by the folks behind the groovy K23 music venue, which will feature Los Angeles-based experimental/ psychedelic artist Jerry Paper as well as a few talented locals. Saturday night’s closing party will feature promising new-school R&B artist AMEA and pop dynamo Wayne Holtz.

Luminaria’s bread and butter has always been its visual art offerings, which often incorporate the use of light in unique ways. Curated largely

by Artistic Advisory Committee members Joe De La Cruz (visual artist and head of Silkwörm Studio & Gallery) and Maritza “Blu” Vasquez (visual artist and Exhibition Committee head of Blue Star Contemporary), this year’s slate of artists promises to continue the tradition of excellence. Though there are too many talents to possibly mention them all, we are especially stoked to see a new installation from forward-thinking arts collective Essentials, which will present “Biochromatic,” examining the “limitations and exploitations of human perception,” Bill Simons’ illuminated sculptures, Julia Barbosa Landois’ “twodimensional walking meditation labyrinth made out of repurposed materials found in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey,” the premiere of Miniature Curiosa’s mysterious live-projection puppet show The Clown Was Stung by Wasps, a glow-in-the-dark mural from Barcelona’s Reskate collective, screenings of Sarah Fox and Jared Theis’ animated short Sea of Love, and Artpace Teen Council’s augmentedreality exhibition, which will allow festival-goers the opportunity to explore digital art scattered throughout the footprint using their smart phones. We are also looking forward to the unveiling of La Monarca, a new solar mural created by Cruz Ortiz in collaboration with the Land Heritage Institute that celebrates San Antonio’s status as an important migratory stop for the Monarch butterfly.

In the realm of literary arts, Luminaria has frequently found inventive ways of showcasing

writers and their work, aside from the traditional reading format. This year, curated in part by San Antonio Poet Laureate Jenny Browne, will include a few literary adventures we’re especially intrigued by. For starters, Caesura, a collaboration between San Antonio writers Melanie Robinson and Claudia Cardona, which takes as its mission “visualiz[ing] a future where poetry is tangible and accessible to all, a world where poetry isn’t intimidating,” will present a three-room installation entitled “Ololyga: Think Like a Mouth” at UNAM. In a quest to present poetry in an interactive and informative manner, this exhibit will “highlight women of color, queer women, and local women poets who are fundamental to the history of poetry.” Meanwhile, House of Trees will present “Word Around Town” (which some might recognize from the Alta Vista neighborhood), a public poetry project that adorns marquee signs with snippets of poetry (in this case from John Philip Santos and Naomi Shihab Nye) meant to provoke reflection.

It wouldn’t be an arty party without a variety of performances that offer kinesthetic thrills to generate the electricity that helps keep festival-goers energized throughout the evening. This year, we are particularly looking forward to performances from A’lante Flameco, Esther de Monteflores (with Tiny Cities, an absurd celebration of the common pigeon), CRITT Project (which will present a choreographed dance that explores the ways in which humans can alter the form of their own realities), and Ballet San Antonio, which will present Something Stupid, riffing on a quote from French symbolist poet Paul Valéry: “Love is being stupid together.”

For the second year now, Southtown The Arts District (STAD), an organization that fosters community engagement and creativity in the Collins Garden, King William, Lavaca, Lone Star and Roosevelt neighborhoods, will present a sprawling arts festival of its own. The festival, designed to encourage walking/biking to galleries and other venues within its five-mile radius, was born, according to organizer Yvette Benavides, from a desire to “share with our city who and what makes Southtown tick.”

After a successful first run that saw participation from 34 STAD members and brought together more than 2,000 art lovers, this year’s festival, which boasts a new partnership with Luminaria, is poised to be even better.

With more than 25 unique events, STAD Festival will augment Luminaria’s offerings, making for one fantastic weekend of arts and exploration. During the day on Saturday (11am-4pm), STAD Festival will present special Luminaria programming alongside its own separate events. Luminaria happenings during this timeframe include Artist Brunches ($35, 11am-12:30pm Sat, Nov. 11), a slew of workshops and readings, and a CD sales/signing session with Luminaria-featured musical acts including Castro, Peterson/Hayes Duo, AMEA, Tatsuya Nakatani, Filthy, Daisy & Buck, Henry Brun and King Pelican.

When asked about how she hopes to see the multi-site festival develop, Benavides expressed hopes that more San Antonians will be drawn to the area and that, eventually, every artist and arts organization in Southtown will participate in it. “Imagine,” she mused, “all the artists and creatives in the community hosting workshops, studio tours, brunches…”

ABSURDIST HORROR Sacred Deer is the year’s oddest allegory

Samuel Beckett, meet Sophie. This unlikely introduction of the absurdist playwright to the woman who had to choose which of her two children would die is courtesy of Greek writer-director Yorgos Lanthimos. The union is not entirely fruitful in Lanthimos’ new psychological horror, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, but if you can overlook the pretention, tedium and inyour-face classical score, you’ll discover one of the most hypnotically creepy and Kubrickian films of the year.

Colin Farrell is a favorite of Lanthimos. He plays Steven, a cardiologist who befriends an odd 16-year-old boy named Martin, played extraordinarily by Irish actor Barry Keoghan, who is perhaps best known as the boy who was accidentally killed on Mr. Dawson’s “little boat” in Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk. The nature of their friendship is kept hidden from both the audience and Steven’s friends and family, including his wife, Anna (Nicole Kidman).

Even when Steven introduces Martin to his children, Kim and Bob (portrayed excellently by Raffey Cassidy and

Sunny Suljic), we sense something is not quite right. And subsequently, when Bob is struck with an odd form of paralysis, that feeling of dread is justified.

As with most metaphorical absurdism, the plot is secondary to the symbolism. Martin, in an on-the-nose moment, even says so: “Do you understand?” he asks Steven. “It’s a metaphor — it’s symbolic.” Indeed, the story makes annoyingly little sense in the second half, which, like Lanthimos’ last movie, The Lobster, is too long. But by the time you realize the film has fallen almost blissfully into the realm of ridiculousness — such as when Steven tells Bob that, if he doesn’t recover soon, he’ll shave his son’s head and make him eat his hair — you’re too involved to look away.

Strangely, this involvement does not concern the plot.

Indeed, it’s difficult to get worked up when the characters themselves show little emotion and deliver their lines in a strikingly deadpan, monotone manner, even when confronted with inappropriate sexual moments that Lanthimos seems to include just to make

his audience uncomfortable. For example, Steven barely shows outrage when Martin’s mother (Alicia Silverstone) practically throws herself upon him romantically. Instead, one is consumed with cinematographer Thimios Bakatakis’ mesmerizing tracking, panning and zooming, rather than the odd plot twists or the script’s lack of linguistic logic. But even the cinematography seems eerily calm, especially when compared to the nightmarish events that dominate the film’s final minutes.

Anna, in describing her husband’s “clean” hands (which, we discover, are anything but clean), says, “So what if they’re beautiful? They’re lifeless.”

The same could be said of the film, which many filmgoers will find tiresome, especially if they forget it’s an allegory. Unfortunately, Sacred Deer is no Lobster. It’s more like surimi, that tasty fish paste that imitates crab.

You feel satisfied and erudite eating it, especially if you dip it in melted butter and play classical music while munching. But it’s fake. Gorgeously fake. sacurrent.com • November 8-14, 2017 • CURRENT 29

Now permanently closed, what can we learn from Hot Joy's failed Dallas experiment?

At the risk of alienating myself from the food writing community at-large, it’s time to discuss the recent shuttering of Hot Joy’s Dallas adventure.

Here’s the gist: After announcing in mid-April that Hot Joy would open a two year pop-up in Dallas’ Uptown area, the experiment was panned by critics and permanently closed October 28 Reviews ran the gamut: In August, Leslie Brenner was generally into it saying: “The vibe is irresistible: retro-pop Shanghai-Western, with tiki drinks, intimate wooden booths and colorful paper dragons blazing across the ceiling. Just out of the gate, the food and drink, refreshingly affordable, have their ups and downs”; Mark Vamos gave it two stars while also billing the eatery as “flamboyantly kitschy Oriental, freighted with all the potential insult of that outdated term”; and finally, Brian Reinhart of the Dallas Observer took the restaurant to task with last week›s review, “Hot Joy’s Food Is Almost as Bad as its Cultural Cluelessness.”

The final review published last Tuesday, and management (made up of Empty Stomach Restaurant Group and Front Burner Restaurants) pulled the plug on Hot Joy Dallas four days later.

Chad Carey, the frontman and self-admitted “white bro” per Reinhart’s review, shared the following with the Current in an email.

“I’m sure it seems odd to close it after just 15 weeks… but this is why we announced it a “pop up”. We went on this adventure with Front Burner within a super-fast timeframe…and didn’t really know how it was gonna go... how the Dallas market would react to it, and how we would manage a Hot Joy 300 miles away from home, and how the relationship between our companies would work…all that stuff.

Obviously, if the place was on track to make $5mm/year we wouldn’t be closing it. And I don’t think that Hot Joy, in that location anyways, was connecting with Dallas like we’d both hoped.

But the reality is that the Front Burner crew has a ton of things going on…we have 3 restaurants and a music venue (and, like I said, we’re a long way away from Dallas)…and we just thought it made sense to “call it a day”. We’re on great terms with the entire Front Burner crew, who were really high-quality, fun partners on this project.”

In the days following the review’s publishing, Reinhart

received plenty of hate mail (funnily enough from “Hot Joy hardliners, old white dudes, & Jindal ‘16 strategists,”) and whether it came up in conversation with friends, colleagues or Facebook tag notifications, the review was present. How did one of San Antonio’s most lauded eateries go from beloved within 1604 to bashed just a couple hundred miles away in the Big D? I’m not one to throw out (gag me) think pieces without putting forth actual thought. After quieting the noise of the NOLA.com report alleging John Besh’s restaurant group fostered a culture of harassment, and while keeping up with the latest Russia scandal, trying to stay on top of restaurant news in San Antonio, and coming to terms with my own thoughts about Hot Joy, here are a few lessons I’ve gleaned.

1. Dallas is NOT San Antonio.

This is no news flash, but as one reader pointed out in the Dallas Observer’s lit comment section on the closed Hot Joy blog, though located in the same state, the two major cities couldn’t be more different. Dallas’ median income is $5,000 more than any other Texas city according to the Department of Numbers website, and is

home to two James Beard Award winners to date, along with several dozen semifinalist nominations. San Antonio has yet to earn that coveted prize. This isn’t an excuse for Hot Joy’s misgivings (we’ll get there), but the stats speak to the cities’ disparity when it comes to dining.

2. Location (and timing) is everything.

To refresh our collective memories, Hot Joy has always been an experiment. First as a pop-up launched in late 2012 inside The Monterey (read: basically the restaurant that started it all for new-wave San Antonio food lovers — fight me) held Sundays and Mondays and manned by chef Quealy Watson. People clamored for a seat, and raved about the crab fat caramel chicken wings.

Due to the pop-up’s fandom, Hot Joy continued through mid-2013 when it was announced the lab was moving to the former home of China Latina (a Mexican-Asian fusion joint owned by Lisa Wong). The experiment moved into a new home in April of 2014, and was an immediate hit due in part to the over-the-top design by Gregorio Mannino that blended every aspect of Asian culture the kitchen was using into a jarring space unlike anything San Antonio had ever seen before (we went as far as to profile the artists behind it several times over).

For this writer, Hot Joy meant new ingredients being pushed to the forefront (see black curry of pork blood and Burmese curry paste, not found in other menus across the Alamo City), in a playful setting, in the city’s “It” area of Southtown, that stayed open late every weekend night.

By August of 2014, Bon Appetit had caught wind of San Antonio›s Mission Chinese and named it the No. 7 best new restaurant in America.

Since then, opening chef Watson has moved on to open

his own Tenko Ramen shop. Hot Joy has seemingly survived the BA hordes albeit a few ups and downs, and John Philpot’s been at the head since June 2016, with his latest menu hitting tables two weeks ago, according to Carey.

In contrast, Dallas’ Hot Joy was set inside a former Texas Land & Cattle. Womp Womp. And unlike Bird Bakery, a San Antonio shop owned by Armie Hammer and Elizabeth Chambers, which hatched another bird earlier this year in Dallas’ Highland Park Village area, Hot Joy isn’t trying to deliver cute desserts in a rustic-chic bakery.

As I write this, I’m watching more boba tea shops (Kung Fu Tea, Snowflake Paradice) move into the area. Without giving Hot Joy all the credit, the city has seen an explosion of Asian fare since its opening with Sichuan House opening in 2015; Ming’s Thing opening late last year inside a boxcar; and a slew of ramen shops have followed suit including Nama Ramen, Wild Goji and Suck It The Restaurant, all opened by Asian-Americans. Suck It The Restaurant serves up a tasty rendition of barbacoa pho with Big Red bubble tea, by the way. Oh, and one of the shops serving up Thai-style rolled ice creams has started adding churros and Hot Cheetos to their cream base (separately, but still a questionable move).

Earlier this May, amid accusations of cultural appropriation, Kooks Burritos in Portland, Oregon closed after owners hinted at stealing techniques from señoras during a trip to Baja California. The shop was all but set on fire.

Before bowing out as the Editor-in-Chief at the OC Weekly last month, Gustavo Arellano tackled the subject of two “clueless white girls” stealing tortilla recipes to open a hipster taco cart in an article titled, “Let White People Appropriate Mexican Food—Mexicans Do It to Ourselves All the Time.” In it, Arellano shared his thoughts on cultural

appropriation and ultimately capitalism.

“The Mexican restaurant world is a delicious defense of cultural appropriation—that’s what the culinary manifestation of mestizaje is, ain’t it? The Spaniards didn’t know how to make corn tortillas in the North, so they decided to make them from flour. Mexicans didn’t care much for Spanish dessert breads, so we ripped off most pan dulces from the French (not to mention waltzes and mariachi),” Arellano wrote.

Empty Stomach’s intention, to my knowledge, isn’t to disrespect Asian cultures. It was to expand on the spirit of dining The Monterey had established, while delivering quality Asian fare of all kinds, with a goofy culinary twist (see Spam fried rice). It was, as Bon Appetit put it, “dude snacks” and “stoner food,” in the similar vein of Mission Chinese and Mott St. Perception is varied (see Brian’s 2017 review of HJ 2.0, see my review of OG HJ in 2014); and maybe HJD’s food wasn’t as charming as it was back home, or perhaps no amount of fish sauce could have saved Reinhart’s experience after taking in the decor. Innovating (and we’re using the word loosely) has its risks, and wanting to expand a culinary empire isn’t for the faint. Though no changes have been announced for Hot Joy’s original location (and I doubt we’ll see any going forward), the lukewarm reception received in Dallas can serve as a lesson for business owners and restaurants going forward.

Bring on consultants (if you can afford them), contact sociologists (if you know how), and definitely don’t cross your chopsticks in take-out boxes (this is actually a real faux pas and you should avoid doing it at all cost).

“This might be the best roast chicken ever,” enthused normally somewhat skeptical dining companion — without an exclamation point, but genuinely nonetheless.

I had to agree. A crackling skin enrobed succulent flesh, hints of smoke tantalized a second sense, and delicate threads of honey brought the whole dish together. Looking voluptuous, but somewhat alone on the plate, the only thing lacking might have been a few pommes rissoles (parboiled and sautéed potatoes) if we’re being fancy, a dab of mashed potato or parsnip if we’re not.

So, hiding in plain sight on the restaurant’s menu from the beginning (I usually order chicken only as a last resort), Periphery’s smoke roasted bird with lemon/ honey jus vaults handily to the top of local charts. But in this casual, neighborhood space, some of whose former tenants have been Old Main Association, Beat Street and Justin’s Ice Cream, chef Justin Weaver (himself formerly of Tre Trattoria and The Lodge) appears less concerned about chart-topping than exploring a personal path that toggles between Italy and Savannah with “a little smoke thrown in for good measure.” His polenta-crusted pimento cheese with bacon jam might just sum it all up.

I have to admit, somewhat sheepishly here, that I think of polenta as the final, cooked product, not as the coarse corn meal it springs from — so I was surprised when the duo of fried patties arrived coated in the crunchy stuff. I’m not totally convinced. Maybe if the grind were finer, the cheese

a little spunkier. But the bacon jam is irresistible, and folks must like the dish as it, too, has been on the menu from its early days. Ditto the inventive crispy lentils with chopped avocado and celery, sunflower seeds, lemon and sumac.

If there were a prize for textural thrills, this plate would win it hands down; the tastes are a little less exuberant (I could use more of the sour sumac powder) but it’s a keeper. So, too, is the cast iron buttermilk cornbread.

Salads and soups show a little more seasonality on the starter list. There have been fewer nods in that direction among the mains.

I’m looking at four, different menus as I write this — a couple from the beginning, another that was recently on line, and the current iteration. Among them, the only substantial difference among the mains is the 86ing of a butternut squash “puttanesca.” I’ve had them all but for the barbecue catfish (beautifully rendered as it may be here, it’s not a fish I yearn to order), freely admit that the chicken liver “bolognese” is a worthy variation on a time-tested theme , and that the world is better off with Periphery’s take on risotto featuring heirloom beans. The vegan/vegetarian world thanks him, too. Pretty much everyone will also appreciate the aggressively charred (to just the right point) fennel with capers and chopped olives from the “extras” column, a category that does see occasional revision.

But — and I wouldn’t say this if I didn’t think there was

a lot waiting in the wings we haven’t seen yet from this chef — let’s move on from the likes of grilled hanger steak with broccoli salsa verde and aji amarillo mayo. Yes, the steak is good; the “salsa verde” is zingy and thrilling in its own right; and the aji-accented aioli could hold its own in any situation. But do we want them all together and, as everything ends up cold, at the temperatures served? Is this an enduring classic in the making? Maybe not.

To go with all this, there’s a concise wine list, big on reds and with a fair number of by-the-glass selections as it should be, that’s not exciting but gets the job done properly.

Cocktails are also not big on inventiveness (the shadow of Old Main still lingers here), but the bar does a commendable job on the challengingly bracing kaffir lime gimlet and the mellow vieux carré with rye, cognac, vermouth and Benedictine — all reasonably priced at no more than $9.50.

And to end it all, one dessert: grilled peanut butter pound cake. The modestly peanut-y and handsomely grillmarked cake and its accompanying salted caramel sauce have remained constant from the start; other components (ours were whipped cream and strawberries in simple syrup) may change from time to time. It’s all good — but good is rarely good enough for long. So I’m eagerly awaiting Act II, a move that, playing against the name, might bring the restaurant from the periphery into the spotlight it likely deserves.

Don’t change the chicken, though.

Name: Künstler Brewing (pronounced COON-stler).

Background: After two previous names (the OK Brewery & Eishaus, San Antonio Brewing Company) and as many potential locations (the old Boneshaker’s space by the Hays Street Bridge, the old OK Bar & Grocery in Yanaguana Garden), Vera Deckard’s craft-beer-and-German-grub concept has opened for business in the Lone Star Arts District.

Named with the Deutsch word for artist, the brewpub aims to bring “American boldness and German heart” to San Antonio beer — a mission which, from first appearances, seems to be succeeding.

There are plans to build out an additional room with a flat-screen or two, but for now, with no TVs and music at a moderate volume, this is a place where you can hear yourself think while you drink.

Experience: After putting in an order for some pub noshes (a potato salad and pretzel, respectively), my wife and I started in on the beers. She sprang for a pint of the Ghost Tracks oatmeal porter; I went for the spread and ordered a flight. The Edelweiss started things off light but kept them artful, fortifying its easy pilsner personality with the fruity bubblegum pop of some dry Noble hops. The only good thing about Donald Trump is that he has made time slow down.

As we get older, every year seems to pass more quickly than the last in the rush toward death. But the Trump regime has slowed all of that down and the year since that dark night when he was elected has felt as long as any since high school.

As in high school, this slow-moving but insanely intense sense of time has seemed to heighten the emotional impact of music. When a song rings right and seems to express the horror and angst that emanates from the world around you, it feels glorious.

This collection of songs comes from the music editors of papers across the nation.

As I was writing a column about the Trump regime for a number of alt-weeklies — and trying to find ways to take “alt” back from the Nazis — I ended up talking to a lot of editors and writers around the country and we thought if we could bring together the best protest songs from as many cities as possible, we might learn something about the state of dissent — while also finding some relief.

Lonely Horse: “Devil in the White House” San Antonio, Texas Shots fired! Lonely Horse come out guns-a-blazing with the track “Devil in the White House.” Opening with a sludgy cadence that crescendos into a tumultuous rock ‘n’ roll explosion, the “desert rock” duo of Nick Long and Travis Hild make very clear their feelings about the 45th POTUS. — Chris Conde Thunderfist: “Suck It” Salt Lake City, Utah Sure, there are more articulate ways to denounce Trump. And revolution by example — countering blustery, bigoted bullshit with artfully composed, well-reasoned takedowns — is how we’ll effect change. That doesn’t mean we can’t occasionally vent our rage by strapping on Les Pauls, cranking up Marshalls, raising middle fingers and offering a blues-based, punk-rock invitation to fellatio. And maybe also, as the final, snarling chord slides into silence, calling him a “fat baby fuckface.” — Randy Harward

Trombone Shorty and Dumpstaphunk: “Justice” New Orleans, Louisiana Trombone Shorty and Dumpstaphunk teamed up on a song called “Justice,” which they released on the day Donald Trump was inaugurated president. A melange of funk, jazz and New Orleans brass band sounds, the video for “Justice” slyly marries video footage of Trump against pointed lyrics. “Inauguration Day seemed to be an appropriate time to voice the need for equal say and opportunity for all people,” said Dumpstaphunk’s Ivan Neville. “We entered a New Year with a lot of unanswered questions on the subject of ‘justice’ that we all felt a little uneasy about. But there’s only so much we can do and this track is our way of expressing our worries.” The song is available on most streaming services. — Gambit Weekly DBL DRGN: “Trim the Bushes” Charleston, South Carolina There were several election-reflection songs that came out of Charleston following November 8, 2016. One of those that stood out for us is by a local hip-hop duo — Damn Skippy and Bad Mojo — dubbed DBL DRGN. Before releasing the audio, the guys filmed the video for the song “Trim the Bushes” on Election Day. With Bad Mojo dressed as a dragon, highfiving passersby, the silly aspect of the visuals was meant to complement the circus-like atmosphere of the 2016 election — it also brought a smile to the faces of voters on an otherwise stressful day. The video was released on Inauguration Day, another attempt to lift the spirits of those who felt the doom and gloom all too well that January morning. In the single, the duo rather brilliantly mash up George Bush (“Fool me once ... can’t get fooled again”) with Bob Marley (“You can fool some people sometimes but you can’t fool all the people all of the time”), while the video shows footage of Donald Trump’s remarks on everything from immigration and Mexicans to birtherism, Putin, John McCain and women. The acknowledgment of all the things we as progressives find disturbing about the current administration, coupled with the sense that folks should keep their heads up (and alert) and stick together for the duration of the hand we’ve been dealt, was the perfect combo. OG Swaggerdick: “Fuck Donald Trump” Boston, Massachusetts Among diehard hip-hop heads as well as artists, Boston’s underground rap scene is renowned as one of the most lyrically elaborate and intellectual anywhere. To that end, over the past year, such acts as STL GLD (Moe Pope + The Arcitype) and more recently The Perceptionists (Mr. Lif + Akrobatik) have released their most compelling works to date, largely inspired by the mess that Donald Trump has made (though not always name-checking Dolt 45 directly). But when it comes to straight-up protesting and verbally impaling the potty-mouthed POTUS, there’s something undeniably satisfying, even admirable, about the Hub’s own OG Swaggerdick’s simple and straightforward election anthem, “Fuck Donald Trump.” From the fittingly filthy rhymes — “Never give props to a punk-ass trick / Motherfuck Donald Trump; he can suck my dick” — to the strangers on the street who gladly join along in rapping in the video, they’re protest lyrics that you’ll still be able to remember and perhaps even rap for relief on occasions when the president leaves you otherwise speechless. — Chris Faraone The After Lashes: “We the Sheeple” Coachella Valley, California The After Lashes is a new, all-female punk band from the Coachella Valley that features Ali Saenz, the wife of former Dwarves and Excel drummer Greg Saenz. Frontwoman Esther Sanchez explained the inspiration behind the band’s song “We the Sheeple.” “‘We the Sheeple’ was an easy song to write, because it came from a place of frustration and growing resentment toward the current powers that be, and, of course, more specifically, Donald Trump,” she said. “We have a president who calls anything he doesn’t like ‘fake news’ while simultaneously spending an insane amount of time tweeting nonsense and lies like a crazy person.

The policies he intends to establish are harmful to pretty much everyone who is not wealthy; unfortunately, so many who voted for him were unknowingly voting against their own best interests. The song is very much about uniting against a tyrant, because that is precisely what we believe Trump to be.”

— Brian Blueskye Rmllw2llz: “So Amerikkkan” Louisville, Kentucky Nationwide, when you think of the Louisville music scene, your mind probably

bounces to My Morning Jacket, Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy or maybe even White Reaper — who are all great — but the city’s hip-hop scene is packed with poignant hip-hop artists, and if you’re looking for a pure protest song, look no further than Rmllw2llz’s “So Amerikkkan,” where he says “Fuck Trump; he’s a bum and Hillary trash, too.” The song was released a few months ago, but, if you give it a listen, you can hear a lot of the country’s past, present and future angst packed into a few powerful minutes.

— Scott Recker Dais: “Atrocity” Rochester, New York Dais tells you exactly where it stands on “Atrocity,” the first track off its selftitled debut EP. The post-hardcore band makes a racing, pounding apology to the Earth before (sort of) slowing down to confront the powers that be. “Show us a tyrant / And we’ll show you our grievance / Fuck that, we will fight this” vocalist Travis Rankin yells and strains in defiance. “The person who the States had elected was talking about withdrawing us from The Paris Climate Accord,” Rankin says. “We felt betrayed and began writing this song. It’s an apology to the Earth for us not being as good to it as it has been to us.” — Jake Clapp Iris DeMent: “We Won’t Keep Quiet” Iowa City, Iowa Back in February, Iowa City held a Solidarity Rally Against the Ban, proclaiming support for immigrant populations and refugees in the wake of Trump’s first and most ridiculous attempted travel ban. In between the community leaders, local politicians and youth speakers, a variety of area musicians performed, including the brilliant Iris DeMent (who’ll perform in San Antonio at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts on November 9). She debuted a song, “We Won’t Keep Quiet,” that captured the feeling in the crowd that day in a really powerful way. — Little Village Joshua Asante: “No Time For Despair” Little Rock, Arkansas Asante, best known for fronting the bands Amasa Hines and Velvet Kente, is also a photographer — someone who delights in the tangible process of making art. It’s in his latest work as a solo artist that this becomes most evident, Asante hunching down over a briefcase stuffed with loop stations and processors. Of “No Time For Despair,” Asante says: “In times of distress and turmoil, it’s easy to get kinda caught up in the collective despair, so the lyrics are very much about, like, ‘Yeah, times are tumultuous, but there’s also a lot of really wonderful, magical things that are going on in your life. ... That is probably the supreme act of defiance — to be joyful, to be loving.’” — Stephanie Smittle

Nothing More vocalist Jonny Hawkins on becoming a charttopping rock ‘n’ roller

It’s not everyday a band from San Antonio shows up on Billboard and iTunes charts.

Let alone at high positions on them. But upon the release of their latest effort The Stories We Tell Ourselves (released back in September) San Antonio rockers Nothing More found themselves on some peak positions including No. 5 on the Billboard Top Current Albums Chart Debut, No. 2 on the Billboard Independent Album Debut, and No. 3 on iTunes’ Album Debut to name a few.

But it’s not all just good publicity and high-quality production on their albums; the four-piece have been putting in work since 2003 – paying their dues on the local San Antonio live music circuit playing places like Jack’s and The White Rabbit (now Paper Tiger), and touring extensively (new bands take heed).

And what also stands out to us for these hometown heroes is that, while they may be be procuring national radio airplay (alongside Foo Fighters and Theory of a Deadman), the level of musicianship and dynamic songwriting is undeniable.

Especially on this last album, drummer Ben Anderson, guitarist Mark Vollelunga, vocalist/ percussionist Jonny Hawkins, and bassist Daniel Oliver showcase their ability to write contemporary rock ‘n’ roll that’s heavy and heartfelt without sounding corny – a pit many an “active rock” band fall into. The Stories We Tell Ourselves blend technicality, thought-provoking lyrics, and enough pop aesthetic to sound approachable to the casual rock listener all while satiating the ears of folks who fancy the harder end of the music spectrum.

To put it simply: it’s a dope record, and we’re not just saying that ‘cause they’re from here.

The Current caught up with vocalist Jonny Hawkins

last week who is currently on Nothing More’s headlining U.S. tour, to talk about the new album, and what it was like playing San Antonio in the early days.

What are people’s reactions to y’all when they find out you’re from San Antonio?

A lot of people around the world will recognize Texas. I’ll say San Antonio and they go ‘Oh Texas.’ So in their mind we’re just Texas. But a lot of people will go ‘Oh are y’all from Austin?’ A lot of people say that and I’m like ‘No, we’re from San Antonio’ so a lot of people are surprised that we’re not from Austin.

What was y’all’s experience playing in San Antonio when y’all first started out here? Was there a lot of support from the get-go?

Out of the gate we had a good experience. And we got a little bit of a grassroots following just through our friends. And back in the day, there was the White Rabbit and we used to play there a lot and we also played Jack’s – that was our home bar for a while just ‘cause they paid us well and we grew a little following there. And it was good, but there were bumps along the way. There were some shady promoters, and people that would say things and not follow through.

Have people been pretty supportive of y’all success here in San Antonio? (laughs) Good question. Most of it is positive. I think a lot of our friends or people that we haven’t talk to in years but were there in the beginning – our lives get busy and stuff – and they’ll check in with us like 10 years later and be like ‘holy shit – representing San Antonio,’ ‘always knew you guys would do it’ or real positive things like that. But there are those bands or

musicians that really are just trying to get something from you.

Like ‘Let us open for you dude!’ or ‘Pass us onto your label!’

Yeah, yeah it’s always a request of some sort and I get it. I don’t blame anyone for asking or thinking that.

It’s kind of the intuitive thing to do when you’re a young band and I think we used to do the same thing. But as time goes on you start realizing that ‘wow that doesn’t do anything for anybody’ the only thing that builds your following and career is just focusing on building your own fanbase and not trying to – the shortcuts really don’t work. There’s no shortcuts today especially.

That’s some great advice, I’m glad people are going to be able to hear that from you. So how does it feel to see this type of success?

Our Lady Peace arose in the sweet ambiguous time where literally any music that wasn’t hip-hop, metal or country was classified “alternative.” From Smashing Pumpkins to Tool and even bands like Third Eye Blind and Our Lady Peace, “alternative” music was the laziest way for industry people to say, “Hey, this isn’t Backstreet Boys or Wu-Tang Clan.”

Sounding like they could probably be on tour with bands like Collective Soul and Eve 6, Our Lady Peace formed in Toronto in the early '90s and quickly experienced success which, contrast to many of their Canadian rock counterparts, continued to thrive on through the 2000s. The band is on tour in support of their new album Somethingness which will be released in the form of two EPs. The first volume (released back in August) actually sounds pretty good, which is relatively surprising for a band from the ’90s and a testament to the quality songwriting of frontman Raine Maida. $33-$44, 7pm, Aztec Theatre, 104 N. SADISTIK As mumble rap and trap rap continues to survive without their artists actually rapping, folks in the underground and alternative rap communities across the planet continue to write bars and hold sacred the true art form of hip-hop, you know, writing lyrics. Seattle’s Sadistik is one of these rappers. “Chemical Burns,” a track that came out in 2014, which features the late rapper Eyedea, is probably the best example of Sadistik’s honest lyricism and skill level as a rapper as the track is in 6/8 time – a tough time signature for most lesser MCs. “Less that you know, the less that you feel / I’m cursed with intelligence I can’t heal / kneel, kill, death to the bourgeois / proletariat with the new song / noose on a bony neck / loneliness, opiate and a bruised jaw.” With Nacho Picasso, Rafael Vigilantics, Upgrade, $7-$12, 9pm, Limelight, 2718 N. ARIEL PINK If you’re not familiar with the psycho-sexiness of Ariel Pink, you’re missing out on life. OK, maybe not life, but definitely an amazing artist who has some dope tracks and a stellar live show to bring those tracks to life. The artist’s expansive discography includes dreamy tracks like “Life in L.A.” off Worn Copy, to the experimental sounds of Thrash and Burn, to the poppy sounds of Pink’s most recent album, pom pom, and of course, a fan favorite, Before Today (technically Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti, but still a classic). Former Current music editor Matt Stieb reviewed the 2015 show saying “Pink is a master of the skit, throwing voicemails and cell phone conversations into his Jeff Koons pop. For “Black Ballerina’s” strip club scene, Pink, the bikini-drummer and keyboard player Jorge Elbrecht traded off on lines, dropping gems like “Hi Billy, how do you like the number one strip club in L.A?” and “Uhh... Moon Tooth might be one of the most important up and coming metal acts of this generation. Combining heavy grooves with vocals reminiscent of ’90s alternative bands like, dare I say The Spin Doctors, and Gin Blossoms, Long Island’s Moon Tooth have a sound unlike any I’ve encountered in the endless realms of metal’s ever-expanding universe.

It’s a return to the grooviness of nu-metal minus the corniness that the genre eventually evolved into. The guitars and drums dance back and forth in weird polyrhythms making for a weird blend of smart, sometimes thrash, groovy ass metal that absolutely should be listened to. LINDSEY BUCKINGHAM AND CATHERINE MCVIE Fleetwood Mac fans hoping for new material from the seminal rock group will have to keep on waiting. In the meantime, perhaps we can content ourselves with the recently-released eponymous effort from Fleetwood Mac founding members Lindsey Buckingham and Catherine McVie. While Stevie Nicks is always missed when she’s not there, Buckingham and McVie, with assists from other original members Mick Fleetwood and John McVie, certainly manage to conjure up something in the neighborhood of Fleetwood Mac’s gently rollicking, arty, poprock sound. In fact, the sessions for this album began as Fleetwood Mac sessions, before that plan was ditched due to Nicks’ focus on her solo work. After a successful summer tour behind the album, the 1970s rock icons are back out on the road and coming to town. For longtime fans and the curious alike, this promises to be a swell show — part looking back fondly, part celebrating a new era. $65-$115, 8pm, The Majestic, 224 E. MINISTRY In the first of hopefully many shows to catch in SA from the tragic cancellation of Sound On Sound Fest, The Aztec Theatre has swooped up headlining industrial metal act Ministry. That’s right – good ‘ol Al Jourgensen (who’s now 59) and the boys are headed to the Alamo City on Sunday, November 12 to deliver their grinding industrial tracks to a city that’s been pretty supportive of the group since their rise to fame in the mid-’80s and early-’90s. And even with the continued lineup changes, the death of guitarist Mike Scaccia and Jourgensen’s battle with drug addiction (he’s been sober since checking into rehab earlier this year), Ministry is one of the few bands from industrial early-’90s peak that has continued to stay relevant. $29-$98, 7pm, Aztec Theatre, 104 N. I’m a 40-year-old bi man. I’ve been with my 33-year-old bi wife for three years and married for one.

When we first met, she made it clear that she was in a long-term (more than three years) “Daddy” relationship with an older man. I figured out six months later that her “Daddy” was her boss and business partner. He is married, and his wife does not know. My wife has met her biological father only a couple of times and her stepfather died when she was 16 — the same year she went to work for her “Daddy.” Their non-work relationship started 10 years later, when she was 26. It’s a complex relationship, and he is not going anywhere, as they now own a business together.

While I don’t think cheating has to be a relationship-ender, dishonesty always has been for me. The final complication: I have a cuckold fetish.

I believe it might be possible to meet everyone’s needs, so long as everyone is honest. I will admit that, in the heat of passion, my wife and I have talked about her having “two daddies.”

But again, DADDIES, you’re asking if something that seems to be working in practice might actually work in practice. And I’m thinking, yeah, it probably could.

I have a sugar baby who is a mature post-op trans woman. She is very attractive but also very high maintenance. (She has OCD.) I pay her $300 per anal sex event; I help with bills, food, etc.; and I spend every weekend with her. I probably spend $15,000 a year on her. I’m happy most of the time (the sex is great), but does this arrangement sound fair?
