ABORTION RESTRICTIONS HEAD TO COURT

“Enforcement of the ban would threaten women’s bodily autonomy, health, and access to abortion in Texas, leaving physicians with no reasonable alternatives by which to continue providing this abortion care,” reads the complaint, filed Thursday, July 20, by the Center for Reproductive Rights on behalf of Whole Women’s Health, Planned Parenthood, and a handful of other Texas women’s health clinics.

The lawsuit specifically targets Senate Bill 8, a sweeping anti-abortion bill signed into law on June 6, that prohibits an abortion procedure called “dilation and evacuation” (or D&E), the safest and most common form of an abortion after 12 weeks gestation.

Abortion doctors say the only medical alternatives are incredibly risky and expensive.

What’s riskier, however, are the illegal alternatives women seek out when laws block them from getting

with them “as soon as possible.”

San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg, who joined the mayors of Houston, Dallas, Austin, El Paso, Corpus Christi, Fort Worth, and eleven other Texas cities in signing the letter, said many of the “inane” issues brought up this session offer short-term political benefits to lawmakers while seriously damaging Texas’ cities.

“We mayors get calls every day from constituents, we know their concerns and build regulations based on them,” Nirenberg told the Current. “For lawmakers to unwind them for political gains...it costs us all in the long run.”

The majority of Abbott’s 20 special session priorities are aimed at squashing local government control. Lawmakers will consider bills that override city rules for regulating constriction projects, public restrooms, special need programs in public schools, property taxes and annexation. Even the smallest city regulations will get a legislative analysis

forcing them into the second-trimester. And that’s not the only cost.

“Many abortion patients are low income, and struggle to make arrangements for, and absorb the cost of, missed work, childcare if they have children... transportation to and from the clinic, and needed hotel rooms,” the complaint reads.

Women’s health advocates say this ban is just another way for lawmakers to regulate a legal procedure, abortion, out of existence — just like Texas lawmakers tried with the 2013 House Bill 2. That bill placed specific, strict building regulations on abortion clinics and doctors across the state, ultimately forcing 21 of Texas’ 40 abortion providers to close. Whole Women’s Health’s 2014 lawsuit against the bill’s constitutionality landed in the Supreme Court in 2016 — and won. Amy Hagstrom-Miller, WWH founder and CEO, said she’s ready to do it again.

“SB8 is evidence of the zealots’ crusade to make full equality out of reach for Texan women, and we will not stand for it,” she wrote in a press release.

Both the state and the women’s health plaintiffs in the case expected SB8 would spark a lawsuit. Like with HB2, the case is expected to land in the U.S. Supreme Court — but the predicted outcomes are a little blurrier. Rumors of progressive Supreme Court Justices retiring means President Donald Trump could turn the court conservative before SB8 reaches D.C. Unless the court approves an injunction, SB8 is set to become law on September 1.

Nirenberg said forcing these smaller governments to all follow the same guidelines will tarnish their reputations.

San Antonio's already hurting from the growing financial losses sparked by the legislature’s pending “bathroom bill.”

Nirenberg said he currently has a letter sitting on his desk from an organization saying it will no longer hold conferences in San Antonio because of the state’s pending law to keep trans people from using the bathroom of their choice. They aren’t the first to do so.

At a Monday event, Abbott said local ordinances concerning things like tree regulations go against the Texas “brand.”

It’s an argument Nirenberg can’t accept.

“It’s the height of hypocrisy to rail against local ordinances that address real issues or cities that push back against bad laws,” Nirenberg said.

“Especially when your administration has spent the better part of its career suing the federal government for impinging on local control.”

Both Abbott (a former Texas Attorney General) and current AG Ken Paxton often took pride about how many times they had sued the Obama Administration (48, in total) for laws they believed violated Texans’ freedom from government overreach. But apparently that freedom stops at the state level.

> Whether it's prohibiting cities from upholding tree laws or forcing public schools to keep trans kids out of bathrooms, Governor Greg Abbott has made limiting local control the focus of the Texas Legislature special session.

“I’m calling for further legislation that fully pre-empts [local control],” said Abbott when he unveiled the session’s priorities in June. “We don’t need a patchwork quilt of regulations.”

But in drafting these priorities, it seems Abbott ignored those most affected by these restrictive bills: Texas mayors.

That’s why 18 mayors of Texas’ largest cities sent Abbott a letter on Monday, July 17, the day before the special session kick-off, demanding a meeting.

“We believe that several of the proposals announced as part of the call for the 85th Special Legislative Session will directly impede the ability of Texas cities to provide vital services that reflect the priorities of local residents,” the letter reads. The mayors ask Abbott to meet

a safe abortion by a licensed doctor. A 2015 study by University of Texas’ Texas Policy Evaluation Project estimated that at least 100,000 Texas women have tried to induce their own abortion. The study found that some women buy abortion drugs over the counter in Mexico, others try herbs or homeopathic remedies, others drink copious amounts of alcohol in hopes of miscarrying and others just ask their friends to punch them in the abdomen.

“Even if limited access remains available,” the filing reads, "the ban forces women seeking second trimester abortions to undergo more complex and risky procedures, including compelling them to undergo painful, untested, and invasive medical procedures, in order to access their constitutional right to abortion.”

Anti-abortion advocates often argue that D&E procedures “dismember” a fetus, meaning it’s immoral or inhumane. They’re known to use inaccurate posters of bloody, full-term babies and illustrations that falsely depict the D&E procedure to influence lawmakers.

Few of their arguments involve the health of the mother — one of the main reasons women are forced to get an emergency second-trimester abortion.

In the filing, CRR attorneys argue that low-income Texans often have no choice but to get a D&E abortion.

“Women seek abortion during the second trimester for the same reason they seek earlier procedures,” the complaint reads. But for many women, it takes time to raise the $550 to $1,500 for an in-state abortion,

BURNING UP BEHIND BARS Federal judge orders Texas to give at-risk prison inmates air conditioning

Richard King has given up writing letters from inside his sweltering cell at the Pack Unit prison, 30 miles south of Houston. Whenever the 71-year-old inmates tries, the sweat dripping from his face smears his writing and dampens the paper. Simple tasks, like writing a letter, become difficult during summer months in a facility that doesn’t have air-conditioned rooms. Even laying down can be uncomfortable because sweat pools into his eyes, King says.

Suffering from high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity, King is one of the 500 people in the Pack Unit prison who are considered “heat sensitive” — the elderly, disabled and those with medical issues, such as heart disease, that can be inflamed in excessive heat. U.S. District Judge Keith Ellison ruled on Wednesday, July 19, that heat-sensitive Pack Unit prisoners need to have access to air conditioning within 15 days. The rooms must maintain a temperature lower than a heat index of 88 degrees, and if Pack Unit is unable to provide an airconditioned room, the prison is required to relocate the inmates into a different facility.

According to Judge Ellison’s preliminary injunction, the inmates described the heat inside the prison as similar to “walk(ing) out to your car in the middle of the summertime” or a hot box in the sun. Ellison says that even young and healthy prisoners are at serious risk from the temperatures in the facility. He contended that keeping at-risk prisoners in the heat, which routinely falls around 95 to over 100 degrees, is cruel and unusual punishment infringing on inmates’ Eighth Amendment rights.

“Prisoners are human beings with spouses and children who worry about them and miss them,” Ellison said in his ruling. “Even those admittedly guilty of the most heinous crimes must not be denied their constitutional rights.”

This ruling is part of a years-long battle to address the roughly 70 percent of Texas prisons that do not have air conditioning. Since 1998, 22 Texas inmates have died from heat-related causes. In 2011 alone, 10 prisoners died during an especially dangerous Texas heat wave.

During the 2011 heat wave, Larry McCollum arrived at the Hutchins Unit prison. One week later, he was found 10

convulsing in his bed and was later proclaimed dead.

That day the heat index inside of the prison was roughly 150 degrees for at least four hours in a row, according to the Houston Press. Ellison says that the Texas Department of Criminal Justice has been “deliberately indifferent” to responding to heat risks.

TDCJ defended its position that installing air conditioning units is too costly. The department’s estimates for installation fell between $22 million to $120 million while the inmates’ experts estimated it would cost $450,000. The cost expectations vary depending on the kind of air conditioning unit and the level of compliance with building codes. Plaintiff attorney Mike Singley told the Houston Press that the TDCJ’s estimations are plausible for purchasing “gold-plated Rolls Royce, diamond-dust-on-top” air conditioning units and meeting every building code, both required and suggested.

According to the TDCJ, installing air conditioning units isn’t only costly but also isn’t necessary because of precautionary measures the prisons have in place, such as unlimited ice water, personal fans, access to common areas that have air conditioning, and wellness checkups for at-risk inmates.

Attorney General Ken Paxton agreed with TDCJ saying in a statement that he’s disappointed with the ruling that will require heat-sensitive inmates to have air conditioning in their rooms. He added that the state will appeal the temporary ruling, which will expire in 90 days, according to the Texas Tribune.

“The judge’s ruling downplays the substantial precautions TDCJ already has in place to protect inmates from the summer heat,” Paxton said in a written statement.

Paxton’s talking about TDCJ’s “respite” locations, or common areas that have access to air conditioning. But they aren’t cutting it, according to the testimonies of the Pack Unit plaintiffs. Like 63-year-old Jackie Brannum, who suffers from several illnesses and requires eight medications, all of which are drugs that don’t mix will with high body temperatures. Brannum also uses a walker because of a pinched nerve that makes it difficult for him to move. He says that the respite locations are

often not accessible nor comfortable for him.

In one occasion, Brannum was forced to stand with his nose against the wall in the respite area, despite his mobility impairment. He’s also had to move from one respite area to the next because of the rooms being at maximum capacity. According to his testimony, Pack Unit guards have told Brannum that he has to submit to rectal temperature readings in order to qualify to stay in the air-conditioned rooms.

Back in 2016, the courts also ruled that the ice water given to Pack Unit inmates was inadequate, since the water contained between 2 and 4.5 times the amount of arsenic permitted by the Environmental Protection Agency. Arsenic in water can can have short range effects, such as nausea and vomiting — and can increase peoples’ risk of skin, bladder and lung cancer. The court ruled that the prison was required to provide water that complied with the EPA’s standards.

Both the water standard ruling and Wednesday’s ruling that at-risk inmates need access to air-conditioned rooms only apply to the Pack Unit prison and are temporary. Jeffery Edward, one of the inmates’ lawyers, said that he thinks the reasoning behind the ruling could potentially affect all state prisons.

Edward says that he and the Texas Civil Rights Project decided to file a lawsuit when, “it became painfully clear, that from a systemic standpoint, we needed to challenge the system and shine a spotlight on the dangerous situation in Texas prisons.” Edward added that he’s disappointed that it took a class action lawsuit to make the safety changes. “It’s disappointing to me, as a Texan, that TCDJ absolutely refuses to protect its inmates.”

TCRP staff attorney Wallis Nader said that his organization and Edwards Law will ensure that the court’s rulings are enforced.

“All Texans, regardless of whether they are incarcerated, deserve dignity and respect,” Nader said. “It’s up to everyone in Texas to shine light on our broken criminal justice system, particularly the inhumane conditions faced by thousands of prisoners every day.”

‘The Giving Distance’ Although she’s likely best known for her realistic drawings of skulls and bones, local artist Kristy Perez also sculpts, paints, designs and collaborates with THU her partner Britt Lorraine on sets and concepts for contemporary dance pieces. Possibly even lesser known are Perez’s poems, which stemmed from the attention she gives to the titles of her pieces. Curated into her first group show by late local legend Chuck Ramirez in 2006, Perez earned an Artist Foundation of San Antonio grant in 2007 and has exhibited consistently ever since. Lately, Perez has been busy at work on “The Giving Distance,” a solo exhibition opening July 27 at the Southwest School of Art. In addition to two large-scale portraits (one of herself, one of Lorraine), one of the show’s key elements is a bound book combining minimalist, mixed-media abstractions, representational drawings and poems. DRAG ▲ Since its 2012 premiere at the Bonham Exchange, the Rey Lopez Birthday Bash has never failed to bring the top performers from RuPaul’s Drag Race to the Alamo City. This year’s extravaganza pairs established fan favorites like season three alum Raja with newcomers such as Naomi Smalls and Valentina. In the spirit of rebellion and disillusionment during World War I, the Romanian poet Tristan Tzara launched Dadism in 1915 in Zurich, Switzerland. Dadists scorned established art and often used photomontages and text to express political views. In New York, Marcel Duchamp and Man Ray began to apply Dadaist principles to photography. Dada eventually evolved into surrealism, which begat pop art, which rebelled against high-brow abstract art in the 1960s.

Dada and pop remain potent influences in the work of 11 San Antonio artists showcased in “MetaDADA: High Art for the POPulace,” on view through August 4 in the

Culture Commons storefront gallery and exhibit hall on the first floor of the Plaza de Armas building (next door to the Spanish Governor’s Palace). The City of San Antonio’s Department of Arts and Culture organized the sprawling exhibit, allowing the artists to paint the walls around their work for more of an immersive effect in the roomy, old-timey exhibit hall with high ceilings, wood floors and ghosts of San Antonio’s past.

Kelly O’Connor is showing what is perhaps her largest-ever photo collage, In Real Life, a gigantic, mural-size work composed of a myriad of early 1960s-vintage childhood memories, with visions of

Disneyland’s castle and Disney movies, with Peter Pan and Dumbo drifting alongside Joan Crawford, Shirley Temple and Dean Martin. It’s so big you’ll have to step outside and look through the French door windows to get the full view.

Illustrations from childhood school books animate Rainey’s relatively small oil paintings on panel. Dick and Jane go to high school in The Junior Set and bobby-soxed Teddy Girls. Too-cute anime informs Jen Frost Smith’s child-like gouache on panel paintings of warm-fuzzy cartoonish creatures, accented with reassuringly naïve exclamations such as “Magic is real” and “It’s okay.”

A WAR EPIC FOR THE AGES Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk is a relentlessly suspenseful tour de force MARYANN JOHANSON

> Dunkirk is primal. It feels urgent and contemporary even though it is set 77 years ago, outside the memory of the vast majority of people who might see it. And it is a movie about war, an experience that fewer of us today have had. But writer-director Christopher Nolan creates an immediacy to the film by dropping us right into the middle of the chaos with very young British soldier Tommy (Fionn Whitehead), who is waiting on the beach with hundreds of thousands of other men: The Germans have pushed the English troops right up to the water’s edge on the northern French coast.

They are stranded, and none of them has any idea what is going to happen to them, their desperation conveyed by little more than the haunted glare in their eyes. Dunkirk opens as practically a silent movie. Because what is there to say? They have been defeated in every way possible short of actually being killed.

And then Nolan brilliantly amps up the confusion and anxiety of the soldiers on the beach in a way that is downright exhilarating, by playing with cinematic time: We have joined Tommy’s story a week before the evacuation of these troops, but we join pleasure-craft sailor Dawson (Mark Rylance) only a day before the evacuation begins, as his small yacht

is about to be commandeered by the Royal Navy to sail to France and collect soldiers, and we join Royal Air Force fighter pilots Farrier (Tom Hardy) and Collins (Jack Lowden) a mere hour before, as they take to the air to protect the flotilla of small boats (such as Dawson’s) heading for Dunkirk. The days of waiting for Tommy, the hours on Dawson’s yacht, and the minutes in the air for the pilots gradually converge in time as events reach their climax ... and this ingenious narrative structure spreads the dread and tension throughout the film in a way that a more straightforward narrative could not.

In fact, Dunkirk is so relentlessly suspenseful that it kept me wound tight throughout; there were moments when I realized I was clenching my jaw or tensing my whole body and had to force myself to relax. I actually hurt by the end of the movie.

It’s easy to joke about spoilers in a story about a historical event the outcome of which is already known, but none of these fictional characters is guaranteed a happy fate. Dunkirk is wound as tightly as I was: It may range across a wide beach, the breadth of the English Channel, and the wild blue yonder, but it’s intimate, sometimes almost claustrophobic.

Texas filmmaker David Lowery’s A Ghost Story disrupts a predictable genre

> “We do what we can to endure,” says a pontificating hipster (played by the musician and sometimes indie-film actor Will Oldham) in a monologue delivered during a party that takes place in the house where a ghost (Casey Affleck) continues to reside long after his physical body has died. It’s a lengthy speech in a film dominated by long takes and very little dialogue. A Ghost Story is a movie constructed in meditative and poetic tones rather than the shock scares and creeping dread that characterize spooky-house movies as we generally know them.

This is a ghost movie for the arthouse crowd, featuring an ethereal figure that’s decidedly low-tech and not a phantom dependent on CGI effects and eerie frights. The ghost here is manifested by an almost ridiculous white sheet that has black eye-hole cutouts, and the actor underneath the sheet for almost the movie’s entirety is none other than Academy Award winner Casey Affleck.

Affleck plays a character named C, who lives in an older, ranch-style house with his girlfriend M (Rooney Mara). He’s maybe a musician, which would help explain A Ghost Story’s

fantastic (and, dare I say, haunting) score (overseen by Daniel Hart). M has made plans for them to move elsewhere and doesn’t understand C’s reluctance to leave the place.

C dies early in the film before their scheduled move takes place, but somehow never departs the domicile.

There’s a MacGuffin about a note hidden by M in a crack in the wall, but retrieving the note is less the reason for C’s continued residency than his desire to endure and have the love that once was made in this house endure, as well. Later scenes reveal some of the earlier and future inhabitants of the house (hence the hipster party scene), and fill the movie with a sense of temporality that’s porous and simultaneous rather than impervious and linear.

Viewers who are not on the movie’s wavelength, however, may find that time seems interminable. Long swaths of the picture pass with no words spoken, and it builds meaning through its accretion of images. In the end, the effect is poetic but not revelatory: A Ghost Story has no new insights into the human experiences of grief, time and love. An evocative,

and generals making plans in London, for instance.

We are stuck in this little bubble of nervous fear.

Eschewing CGI and shooting on the actual locations — including the real Dunkirk beach — with ships and planes of the era (and thousands of real-live extras) certainly contributes to the sense of organic authenticity of the movie. But it’s the smallness of the film that is so important, so vital. This isn’t, after all, a movie about war, about large-scale battle, never mind that it puts us in the middle of a war with a power that few other movies have achieved. Dunkirk is about something of which war-making is only one aspect: It’s about people playing their parts in an enormous communal effort. This is what gives the film its resonance for us today, and what makes it so emotional, even though we barely learn much about any of these characters. The people here are boiled down to one thing, their one intense purpose of the moment, whether that’s their own survival or their absolute imperative to do something to pitch in, as with teenager George (Barry Keoghan), who insists on sailing with Dawson to Dunkirk because he is desperate to help in whatever way he can.

Dunkirk, then, is speaking to a desire that many of us have — to be a part of something big and important, to step up and contribute our effort to something meaningful. We don’t see a lot of opportunity to do that today, and we long for it.

(That doesn’t have to mean war! It could mean battling global warming, or rebuilding crumbling infrastructure.) And when we see the power of working together that Dunkirk illustrates, its absence suddenly stings.

THE ART OF HAUNTING

long-take scene of M acting out her grief through binge-eating a pie and then purging may seem at first like a creative way to demonstrate a person’s misery. Those who aren’t irritated by the unlikely sight of this skinny actress guzzling a pie in real time will, perhaps, later find themselves annoyed after devoting so much time to her sorrow — only to discover that she is only an incidental character in the story. The scene comes across as a stylistic fillip in writer/director David Lowery’s arsenal and not an intrinsic part of this ghost’s narrative. Other creative techniques Lowery employs — like the old-fashioned 1:37 screen ratio that has the visual effect of boxing in the characters — are more effective.

Texas filmmaker Lowery demonstrates his out-of-the-box thinking by telling his haunted-house story from the ghost’s point of view.

It seems in his view that, even after death, spooks don’t give up the ghost of the human impulse to endure. Yet they, too, can lose their way, just like their living counterparts. Maddeningly, A Ghost Story can seem more like a creative exercise than a fully formed narrative construct.

San Antonio’s first food hall is now open

As you read this, hundreds of people will have experienced the latest in San Antonio dining.

The Bottling Department Food Hall, a first of its kind for San Antonio and second in Texas after Houston’s Conservatory, is several years’ worth of planning and research by the Pearl management that’s adding not one, not three, but five new eateries to the already popular district known for pushing San Antonio’s food scene into the national spotlight.

Food halls, a staple in Europe, are taking the U.S. by storm with early adoption from either coast and now, San Antonio is has its very own. Like food halls in L.A. and Atlanta before it, the Bottling Department will be used as incubator space for young entrepreneurs, but expect to find familiar faces inside the building, originally built in 1894, destroyed by fire in 2003 and brought back to life by Clayton & Little Architects (also responsible for Cured and the former Arcade Midtown Kitchen).

With five new eateries and a bar opening, the rush the area is about to experience is worrisome for this writer, but Shelley Grieshaber, the Pearl’s director of culinary operations shared what steps were taken to guarantee a successful launch including a 20-member team of Bottling Department staff from bartenders to utility workers.

“There’s lots of failsafes in place we’re hoping for that kind of rush, which we expect when we first open,” Grieshaber says.

The five concepts changed within that handful of years Grieshaber researched food halls across the country.

“I was not looking for specific concepts, but was looking

for food not represented here, so as to not create undue competition,” Grieshaber said while sharing a list of items that she felt needed to be available at the food hall.

The diversity in items is impressive — there’s ramen and Japanese fare, donuts, hand pies and soft serve, fresh bowls and salads, rotisserie chicken, porchetta and burgers. All are ideal for the programming the Pearl’s rolled out with the addition of the splash pad-equipped Pearl Park.

Of course, when a restaurant opens these days, the brouhaha that follows from the influx of food lovers, influencers, and food writers can lead to long waits and skewed first impressions. Maybe, because this is five restaurants opening at once, we could give it a minute.

“I’m hoping, the public will be patient,” Grieshaber says.

In other words, don’t go hangry.

Here’s a quick breakdown of what diners can expect from the city’s first food hall.

TENKO RAMEN // Patience will be required if the lines resemble those from Tenko’s early pop-up days at Brick.

Opened by chef Quealy Watson (formerly of Hot Joy) and business partner Jennifer Dobbertin, Tenko — named for a mythical, gold nine-tailed kitsune or fox — will serve up a similar menu to those 2016 pop-ups. Expect to find kimchi, chicken fajita karaage, gyoza, and a chicken katsu sandwich, as well as three mainstay ramen bowls, a Tokyo shoyu ramen, spicy miso tonkotsu ramen and a double mushroom ramen.

Prices will vary from $3 to $11, with ramen add-ons ranging from .50 cents for chili and garlic and $3.50 for chashu pork.

But with limited seating in the Bottling Plant (100 or so

for all five eateries), most will offer to-go options. Large deli storage containers will be used for ramen, but Tenko’s enlisted the help of local artist Jamie Stolarski to take their packaging in a more specific direction.

The artist (responsible for the infamous Manu prayer candle) drew influences from 1970s Japanese horror cinema, posters and graphics for the shop’s packaging and branding that extends from chop stick wrappers to square sandwich boxes for the katsu sandwiches.

MAYBELLE’S // You’d think that as accomplished a trio as Bakery Lorraine’s Jeremy Mandrell, Anne Ng, and Charlie Biedenharn could whip out a donut shop with five hands tied behind their collective backs. Apparently, if you want to avoid packaged mixes and knee-jerk “unicorn” glazes, it ain’t that easy.

In contrast to Lorraine’s extensive menu, Maybelle’s will offer donuts, fried pies, coffee, and soft-serve ice cream — that’s it. But “some people may want donuts one morning and fried pies the next afternoon,” suggests Biedenharn, speculating that the donuts (they will be made at Lorraine’s commissary kitchen on Eleanor) will likely be the first to sell out, whereas the fried-to-order pies are expected to last all day. Both have been subjected to extensive testing — the donuts four at a time in a countertop fryer, before the big “donut robot” had arrived at the commissary.

strawberry — combinations that work are the goal. “We could get wild and make a $7 donut,” says Mandrell, “but our ‘competition’ is really Shipley’s, so nothing over $2.50 or $3” is contemplated in accord with the family-friendly nature of the Food Hall.

For their part, the pies — all sweet, as “the hall’s savory aspect is taken care of with other vendors” — will be wrapped in puff pastry (house-made, natch), and all fillings will be made from scratch. Think peach Melba and strawberry with rhubarb and a price point of around $4. The soft serve will be the last to come together as the machine had just been installed minutes before our interview.

THE GOOD KIND // The Tim McDiarmid-led project was technically announced last summer and was going to have a very different feel than as part of the five-some going into the Food Hall. Originally slated for the space once used by One Lucky Duck, The Good Kind seamlessly transitioned its plan into the Bottling Department Food Hall. Those familiar with the Canada-born caterer’s concept, Tim the Girl, already know what’s in store: good, guilty-free food.

Market-goers have had a chance to sample The Good Kind’s menu for the past several months, but TGK’s menu offerings are extensive. A Grab-n-Go refrigerator will make it easy to pick up clean, nourishing, sustainable and delicious food that can accommodate paleo and Whole30 diets. Expect to find salads (soba noodle, Lacinato kale salad, cilantro pumpkin seed slaw), sandwiches (a hippie sandwich with hummus, yogurt feta, shaved veggies; roast beef and Havarti with pickled onions and horseradish aioli) side salads, dips and snacks, dressings, and protein-add ons (chicken, feta, beef meatballs, bacon, avocado, hardboiled eggs, nuts and seeds).

The dine-in menu will feature more breakfast options, smoothies, warm and pressed sandwiches and toasts with prices ranging from $6 to $9.

BUD’S ROTISSERIE // Another familiar face comes by way of Bud’s Rotisserie from chef Pieter Sypesteyn and wife Susan. In fact, Where Y’at Food Truck, the

Sypesteyn’s first project was going to be a porchetta truck before chef pivoted his menu.

“We ended up putting it on the back burner and then opened Cookhouse and NOLA Brunch, but this opportunity came up,” Sypesteyn says.

He’s adding what he calls the two most essential and classic Southern dishes — rotisserie chicken and Louisianastyle porchetta — with accompanying sides. With a kitchen about as big as the one in NOLA Brunch & Beignets (read: tiny), Sypesteyn and co. aren’t trying to reinvent the wheel. They’ll feature Southerninspired sides with an extra bit of oomph such as roasted potatoes with drippings from the pork and chicken, Cajun cornbread, potato salad, candied yams and braised greens.

The proteins will be available in sandwich or plate form and prices will range from $12 for plate/sandwich and two sides, or $8 for a quarter-pound of porchetta or half chicken. Bud’s might just give other take-home rotisserie birds a run for their money.

WINE LIST // Scot Ota is a busy guy. Not only does he run High Street, a popular, seven-days-a-week wine bar at Pearl, but he has taken on the job of devising a universal wine list for Pearl’s Bottling Department Food Hall. He’ll also be training staff in the basics of wine and wine service. Crazy or what?

“This is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time,” says Ota. He’s referring specifically to a way to make wine ordering easier for the ordinary customer. Yes, one side of the document he’s devising for the hall will be relatively standard, listing wines by style: bright white, earthy red, sparkling, etc.

But the other side is where the innovation comes in. It will be laid out like a floor plan of the hall with a section devoted to each business (ramen, burgers, healthy bowls, donuts … ) as you would encounter it walking through the main door. And each designated section will contain a listing of the wines recommended

TEAM BUILDING Adkins’ Cactus Land Brewing Co. shows couples commitment to craft

“The first brew day was awful,” Erica recalled in conversation with the Current. “Hops went all over the stove. We were up ‘til 2 o’clock in the morning. I was like, ‘What are we getting ourselves into? We’re chilling our beer in the bathtub on ice!’”

Such an incident might have discouraged other first-time homebrewers — and, for a couple barely a month into their relationship, resulted in some domestic discord. Instead, the Teagues dutifully bottled, labeled, and consumed the beleaguered batch (dubbed “Buzzard Breath”), recalibrated their approach, and have made brewing a cornerstone of their relationship ever since.

The couple opened Cactus Land in January of this year in Adkins, just across the Bexar County line in Wilson County on property owned by Dustin’s parents. Built out on nights and weekends away from their day jobs, the Teagues’ commitment to craft is apparent right down to their flight boards — Dustin and Erica tore down their backyard fence to make them.

Cactus Land’s output covers the style spectrum, ranging from saisons to stouts. Brewed on a 2-barrel system with a storied history (it started out brewing macros lagers at SeaWorld’s Busch Gardens), beers The first time Dustin and Erica Teague tried come at around 60 gallons a batch, with pilot recipes run on Dustin’s original, hand-built homebrew setup. to make beer, they wound up painting the kitchen with wort. Nevertheless, the Cactus They’ve got a collaboration under their belt already, too: together with fellow newcomers Weathered Land Brewing Company co-founders persisted, and Souls, they produced Truth of Darkness, an imperial now San Antonio is reaping the benefits.

Currently, San Antonians can find Cactus Land beers at The Hoppy Monk and The Growler Exchange.

The taproom also maintains weekend hours, where visitors can experience onsite exclusives, such as their ongoing “Texas Juice” series of New England-style IPAs, or the Lucas, a gose which Erica dresses with the venerable tangy candy.

In keeping with their DIY ethos, the Teagues are accomplished foragers. The bulk of their adjuncts, from prickly pears to mesquite wood, come from their own property.

“We pick all the prickly pears onsite. The mesquite that we use for our farmhouse mesquite we got all onsite,” Dustin said. For him, such attention to quality is not just good craftsmanship, but good business planning.

“Good craft beer, in my opinion, is 50 percent marketing and 50 percent good beer,” he said, “and the good beer does the marketing itself, so it’s technically 100 percent marketing.”

So how has running a brewery impacted their relationship since that first ill-fated brew?

“I’ve learned so much more about him,” Erica says. “I feel like we’ve both grown so much from this experience.”

“It’s also helped us stay occupied,” Dustin adds.

“We have stuff to do. We’re never bored.”

SPEAKING IN RHYME

Local rapper D.R.O. drops new single

The art of rhyming words together through phrases that fold over instrumental beats, i.e. rapping, can have a dramatic affect on artists seduced by its grit and charm.

Among the many is Dillon O’Con — a local, half Mexican, half Caucasian, 24-year-old rapper and producer that performs under his initials D.R.O. The rapper told the Current that after freestyling with some friends at party during high school, he began to pursue hip-hop as form of art and personal expression.

Curious about the history and culture of the genre, O’Con took a class called “The Psychology Of The African American Experience,” while attending the University of Texas in Austin.

He says the experience helped him develop more of an understanding of his place in the rap community — if a person is going to assume a role in the music and art of hip-hop, they should be conscious of their conduct within it. “I’m a guest in hip-hop,” said O’Con, “I’ll always be a guest.”

In 2015, O’Con released his first collection of music, the eponymously named DRO EP which was distributed on vinyl through Australian label Fifty Records. A year later came EAT, the second official release and first full-length album from the San Antonio native, which he says was “way more conceptualized” as opposed to the DRO EP, which O’Con likens to a “collage” of his youth.

Throwing samples out the window and deciding to instead employ the natural sounds of live instrumentation, EAT’s cohesiveness represents an evident progression in skill and focus from the rapper/producer.

The rapper just released a new single titled “Light Privilege” (stylized “light privilege”), which sounds like the psychedelic trap beats A$AP Rocky is known for rapping over, matched with the inward-dialogue-lyricism of alternative rappers like Slug from Atmosphere and Aesop Rock. “[‘Light privilege’ is] about identity crisis,” O’Con told the Current while explaining that the track explores the themes of race, appropriating and misappropriating culture, and the examination of his own privilege as a lighter skinned person.

SCREAMS FALL SILENT: Local rockers weighin on the death of Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington

In 2000, my brother and I each got a CD from our grandmother for Christmas. I got Vast’s Music For People my brother got Linkin Park’s Hybrid Theory (I think someone at the record shop helped her pick those out for us).

Being a huge fan, back then, of nu-metal bands like Limp Bizkit and Korn etc., I spent less time listening to Vast and more time soaking in Mike Shinoda and Chester Bennington trading off rap verses and screaming choruses over glitched guitars chords and turntable scratches.

Shit was magical (I’m actually re- listening to it while I write this).

As we all know, the band exploded, securing a ton of awards for Hybrid Theory including Grammy’s for Best Hard Rock Performance for “Crawling” in 2002 and Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for “Encore/Numb” with Jay-Z. Even though the band managed to evolve beyond the increasingly unpopular sound of nu-metal and rap-rock, somewhere in the midto-late aughts, Linkin Park’s movement towards alt-pop was met with much criticism from their original fanbase, but still continued to rank high on the music charts like with One More Light which garnered the number one spot on the Billboard Music chart and was released back in May of this year.

So, when my co-worker/work-wife Jessica Elizarraras told me from across the office (her desk is like 10 feet away), that reports of vocalist Chester Bennington’s death were starting to roll in, my heart sank. And because it’s my job to report shit that I think our readers (like you) might want to know, I busted out a quick report about Bennington’s untimely suicide, which just happened to be on the late Chris Cornell’s birthday – another alumnus of rock and roll fame who took his life earlier this year.

Law enforcement sources told TMZ the singer hanged himself at a residence in Palos Verdes Estates in L.A. County. Bennington’s body was discovered just before 9 a.m.

Thursday, July 20.

The band was scheduled to start a tour with a concert on July 27 in Mansfield, Massachusetts with a stop in San Antonio on August, 23.

Given San Antonio’s love of all things alternative (see KISS’ perma-aughts streaming), this death echoes especially loud.

Vocalist Bryan Scott of the recently-reunited, local nu-metal act Union Underground headlined a tour in in 2000 — Linkin Park opened. Scott released this statement to the Current: “I’m shocked and saddened today by the news of Chester Bennington’s apparent suicide. My condolences to his family and bandmates in Linkin Park. I’ve shared the stage, and some laughs, with him many times.

It was a privilege having him and the guys on the road, as an opening act believe it or not, with Union Underground just prior to Hybrid Theory being launched. I remember him playing me rough mixes one night of ‘In The End’ and ‘Crawling’ and I commented that ‘this record will easily do 10 million copies’ and I meant it. Of course I was off by about 6 or 7 million, as it went on to top 16 or 17 million copies. The phenomenal success of LP is well deserved and I’ve personally been inspired by their prolific and experimental songwriting and killer production skills over the years. And as a singer I’ve always been very humbled by his monstrous and multi-faceted voice. We will be robbed of new melodies to enjoy, but your amazing body of work lives on forever."

Local artist Nina Diaz who fronts the wellknown rock outfit Girl in a Coma commented, “I wasn’t influenced by him really, but of course respect what he did. I know he was a fan of Depeche Mode so I thought that was cool. And he sang with STP for a second. I mean, I admit I’ve been suicidal, but it goes away eventually.

Just crazy when someone really does it. What goes through their mind till the end!?”

The band released a statment via their website early Monday morning, July 24, several days after co-vocalist/rapper confirmed Bennington's passing on Twitter..

Despite Linkin Park’s move towards a less angsty sound, with his piercing screams, contemplative lyrics and soaring vocal melodies, Chester Bennington’s contribution to rock 'n' roll won’t soon be forgotten.

While Alex Napping may sound like they might’ve been on a indie record label sampler CD from 2004, their songwriting is still catchy as hell and definitely worth noting. THE ROTEM SIVAN TRIO As scores of shows are billed every week here in Alamo City, the few that land in our “top picks” are the sort of the shit that we think y’all would like to see or should know about (duh). Out of the nine or so in this particular bunch however, we’re super duper excited about Rotem Sivan Trio’s appearance at Carmen’s. While we try to highlight all sorts of artists across the vast musical spectrum, Jerusalem-born jazz-guitarist Rotem Sivan is quickly becoming a revered guitarist in the international jazz community and absolutely should be on your weekend itinerary. On “Shahar,” the opening track off his newly released album Anitidote, Sivan’s fingers walk across the fretboard of his guitar producing these sort of whispering melodies that fall elegantly between bassist Haggai Cohen Milo and drummer Colin Stranahan. And even if you’re not a fan of Chick Corea or other fusion artists, it’d be hard not to appreciate the sheer skill it takes for The Rotem Sivan trio to achieve the textured and dynamic sound that they’re becoming known for. $20, 8pm, Carmens De La Calle Cafe, 320 N. THIS WILD LIFE Cue Hot Topic emo tears in 3, 2, 1 …OK, all scene-kid, mascara sobs aside, Long Beach, California’s This Wild Life actually isn’t as cheesy as you might think at first listen. Sure, the duo definitely fall into that acoustic, second-wave-emo sound made popular by acts like Dashboard Confessional and Bright Eyes, but they manage to add whispers of atmospheric post-rock and contemporary indie pop that give them a little bit more of a fresh take on the genre. It’s definitely not bad and even if you haven’t spun a Further Seems Forever record in a minute, it might be worth checking out a group that’s keeping the emotional side of post-hardcore alive. $17, 7pm, Paper Tiger, 2410 N. A year ago, the inaugural San Antonio Reggae Festival (not to be confused with BobFest fka Marley Fest) went down at Rosedale Park, in the heart of a vibrant and proud community, to little fanfare. The event, however, was a success in many ways, and it’s back again for its sophomore year of celebrating reggae (and dancehall) music and the rich cultural heritage that surrounds it. Reggae is, after all, a music for proclaiming joy and lifting practitioners and audiences alike out of darkness. This year’s family-friendly affair will feature Jamaican acts like pioneering 1980s reggae/dancehall DJ King Yellowman, dancehall duo Tanto Metro and Devonte and more. Several SA-based reggae groups with also take the stage, including the Skunk Brothers and Saltwater Slide.

CREEPERS > I’m a reader in Kansas with two teenage daughters, 16 and 18. My girls recently met a boy where they work and both took an interest in him. The 18-year-old was devastated that he was more interested in her younger sister. I spoke to the 16-year-old about it, which is when I found out this boy is going to be a sophomore in college. The fact that he’s interested in a 16-year-old is a red flag. I asked the 16-year-old to keep her distance. She agreed, but I saw a shirtless photo he sent her.

I don’t know what other photos he’s sent and I don’t know what she’s sent him, but I immediately removed all photo apps from her phone. The girls have had public fights about this boy. They’ve made peace with each other, but now my 18-year-old wants to date him. I can’t control the actions of an 18-year-old but (1) it seem likely this guy is a complete creep and (2) isn’t her relationship with her sister more important?

Knowing A Numbskull Stalks Adorable Sisters 1. I’m not ready to pronounce this guy a creep — at least not for the age difference. It sounds like he met your daughters someplace they’re all working this summer, which is a lot less icky than some college boy creeping on highschool girls via Instagram. And you say this boy is going to be a sophomore in college, KANSAS, but don’t give his age. There are 30-year-old college sophomores, of course, but if this boy went straight to college from high school, that would make him 19 years old. why you wouldn’t want your younger daughter dating college boys, I think you are overreacting to the age difference — and it’s a moot issue, as he’s no longer pursuing your younger daughter.

1.5. You know what is creepy?

Pursuing a pair of sisters. The possibility of conflict was so predictable, it was likely a motivating factor for him. Getting off on drama and public fights isn’t a crime, but it is a red flag.

2. You ordered your 16-year-old to stop seeing this guy and deleted apps from her phone. (It’s cute you think your daughter isn’t tech-savvy enough to re-download and hide all the same apps.) You should warn your daughter about the risks of sexting — it may be legal for her to have sex (16 is the age of consent in Kansas), but she could face child porn charges for sending photos and this boy could wind up on a sex-offender registry for receiving them.

(Laws meant to protect young people from being exploited are routinely used to punish them.) But don’t attempt to micromanage your daughters’ love lives. Parental disapproval has a way of driving teenagers into each other’s arms, KANSAS. If you don’t want your daughters having a fuck-you-mom threesome with this guy before the summer is over, you’ll let them work through this on their own — but go ahead and stitch “boys come and go but sisters are forever” on a couple of pillows and put them on their beds.
