Texas bans the safest, most common abortion procedure after 13 weeks

In late 2015, Rachel Goldberg was giddily awaiting the birth of her first child. She daydreamed about her own Spring birthday, a celebration she’d be able to spend with her newborn baby boy. She had a room in her Springfield, Missouri home filled with tiny clothes and a new crib.

But 20 weeks in, Goldberg and her husband were hit with unexpected and sobering news at a routine ultrasound: her baby’s heart wasn’t functioning properly, and his organs were developing far too slowly. Something had gone terribly wrong.

Goldberg was referred to a perinatal specialist, who wasn’t able to fit her into his schedule for two weeks.

A week or two after her appointment, she was told her baby was missing a stomach and kidneys altogether. If she carried it to term, the baby would likely live a short, painful few minutes before dying — and her doctor guaranteed it would be a high-risk delivery for her. He said he understood if she wanted to terminate the pregnancy.

But since the doctor couldn’t affirm Goldberg’s life was definitely in danger, it would be illegal for him — or anyone else in Missouri — to facilitate her abortion. That’s because Missouri law prohibits women from getting an abortion after 21 weeks and 6 days from conception, except if the woman’s life is threatened.

So Goldberg was faced with this decision: Drive 10 hours to a Colorado abortion clinic (where state law has no cutoff date for the procedure) and pay $10,000 (her insurance couldn’t legally cover a non-life threatening abortion) or risk a dangerous delivery, after which she’d watch her baby suffer in pain and die.

Goldberg and her husband took out a loan from their bank and drove to Colorado, where an unfamiliar doctor aborted her 25-week-old fetus. She recovered in an unfamiliar, uncomfortable hotel room miles away from home

while she mourned the loss of her son.

“It’s not an emotion I can really explain or describe to people,” Goldberg told the Current. “My body was responding like I had just delivered a baby, which I had. But I wasn’t holding it. I felt empty inside. And I wanted to be home.”

Aside from the staggering cost of the abortion, she estimates she ordeal cost her and her husband about $3,000 in lost wages, gas and hotel costs.

“I realize it’s a decision many women can’t afford to make,” she said.

But it’s a decision Texas women will soon face, now that Gov. Greg Abbott has signed a sweeping new antiabortion bill into law.

Researchers now know that a 2013 Texas law, which has since been declared unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court, forced more Texas women to get abortions even later in their pregnancy. They now fear that lawmakers only exacerbated the problem this session by passing a bill that bans the safest type of abortion procedure these women can receive in the second trimester.

Texas’ Senate Bill 8 aims to prohibit an abortion procedure called “dilation and evacuation” (or D&E), the safest and most common form of an abortion after 13 weeks gestation. The only alternatives to D&E are making a woman go through labor and deliver the fetus or going under the knife for a procedure similar to a hysterectomy — both procedures that abortion doctors say are incredibly risky and expensive.

“The complication rates associated with the alternatives are much, much higher,” said Bhavik Kumar, the Texas medical director for abortion provider Whole Women’s Health.

By leaving women with these dangerous alternatives — alternatives that go against most doctors’ best medical

judgement, SB8 will effectively be a ban on secondtrimester abortions. Which, Kumar fears, may push women to take their abortion into their own hands. “It’s already happening in Texas,” he said. “I can only imagine that’s going to get worse with this bill.”

Like most bills that survive the Texas Legislature, SB8 started out looking a lot different than the final law Abbott signed.

Filed by Sen. Charles Schwertner, SB8 was originally meant to prohibit women who have an abortion to donate any of the resulting fetal tissue to scientific research organizations. But as the session drew closer to its May 29 end date, more anti-abortion lawmakers with bills yet to be heard by a committee started tacking pieces of their bills onto Schwertner’s, since his seemed to be getting traction.

Soon, SB8 became a 12-page bill banning the sale of fetal tissue, prohibiting D&E abortions, prohibiting Dilation and Extraction (D&X) abortions (which anti-choice activists call “partial-birth abortions”) and requiring abortion remains to be cremated or buried.

Two of these measures — D&X abortions and selling fetal tissue — are already illegal by federal law, proving that part of this bill’s intention was to simply remind conservative voters that their anti-abortion representatives are still antiabortion. The D&E ban is arguably the bill’s one regulation that will impact the lives of Texas women the most. And it’s specifically punishing women who need the kind of procedure another Texas law forced them to seek out.

The bill is similar to 2013’s House Bill 2, a jumble of various anti-abortion regulations that came out of the state capitol. HB2 placed specific, strict building regulations on abortion clinics and doctors across the state, ultimately forcing 21 of Texas’ 40 abortion providers to close.

Women’s Health vs. Hellerstedt. Justices sided with the abortion provider, agreeing that HB2 placed an “undue burden” on the majority of Texas women seeking legal abortions by unnecessarily shuttering so many clinics.

“I thought the message from the HB2 ruling made it crystal clear — states cannot regulate abortion out of existence,” said Amanda Allen, senior state legislative counsel for the Center for Reproductive Rights, the legal group that represented Whole Women’s Health at the Supreme Court. “We believe SB8 is unconstitutional.”

Allen is especially concerned with a provision in the bill that only allows a D&E abortion if it’s a “medical emergency,” but not if they’re a victim of rape or incest.

Under SB8, rape or incest victims would be forced to carry a fetus to term. She wouldn’t confirm whether or not CRR will file a lawsuit after the bill goes into effect.

While it’s no longer law, HB2 has left a long-term impact on women seeking abortions in Texas. Only a couple of the 21 shuttered clinics have reopened, meaning women are still facing the “undue burden” of driving hours for a procedure (if their employer, childcare provider or budget allows it, that is). Because of this hurdle, many women aren’t able to arrange an appointment until later in their pregnancy — meaning they had to have a D&E procedure.

“Economic justice is such an issue here,” said Amanda Williams, the director the Lilith Fund, a nonprofit group that helps low-income women pay for their abortion. Many of her clients are seeking second-term abortions because of serious financial barriers. In many cases, she said, women aren’t able to come up with enough money for an early abortion, which ranges from $550 to $1,500 instate, forcing them into the second-trimester. Sometimes, Williams added, women can’t ever come up with the funds — and are forced to go through with the pregnancy.

“Our main concern is that this could completely push

abortion out of reach,” Williams said.

According to researcher Dan Grossman, director of University of California at San Francisco’s Advancing New Standards in Reproductive Health, the need for a secondtrimester abortion has only increased since HB2’s short-lived success. Before HB2’s fall, Grossman worked with the Texas Policy Evaluation Project at UT Austin to collect quantitative data on how HB2 had impacted Texas women. His work played an instrumental role in the Supreme Court victory.

He told the Current that if SB8 becomes law, his team is ready to start recording how the anti-abortion restrictions impact Texas women all over again. He now knows how key this kind of comprehensive data is in court.

“Courts must consider evidence when they weigh the potential benefits of a law affecting abortion care against the potential harms in terms of women’s access to services,” he said. “Courts cannot simply rely on the statements or beliefs of legislators.”

That’s the main reason Rachel Goldberg started telling her story to Missouri state legislators pushing for antiabortion laws. She wanted her experience to protect future women from draconian laws — and the stigma that envelops them.

When Goldberg returned home from Colorado, she was vilified by family, friends and relatives who heard she’d gotten an abortion. “They told me I was going to hell,” she said. “A lot of them still don’t talk to me.”

Others were more apologetic, and said her abortion was different than the normal kind, so it was okay. But Goldberg wasn’t looking to be pardoned.

“Everybody’s abortion experience is different, everyone has the right to make that decision on their own. I wasn’t any different,” she said. “I imagine a world where all children who are born are wanted and every woman’s reproductive rights are valued.”

“Tonight the voters got it right,” Nirenberg told the crowd gathered at his election headquarters Saturday night. “Tonight the voters rejected the politics of division and false choices. They said yes to a bigger and mightier vision of inclusion and diversity.”

Taylor conceded shortly after 9 p.m. Saturday, some two hours after polls closed, in front of a small crowd gathered at Sunset Station. She first addressed her supporters by praising God and then reciting a Bible verse. “I am at peace,” she said.

“I am so thankful to each and every person in this room.” Then, in an apparent attempt to downplay the sting of the 10-point margin that separated her and Nirenberg, Taylor ran through a list of accomplishments she regularly hammered on the campaign trail: a collective bargaining contract with the local police union, a major water pipeline project and a comprehensive plan for the city, all of which happened at City Hall during her tenure.

“I’ve said it all along – I’m not a politician, I’m a planner,” Taylor said with a grin. She said the city was on an “amazing trajectory” and urged her supporters to engage with their new City Council; in addition to a new mayor, candidates who won six out of the 10 district seats are new to city hall.

“A lot of newbies gonna be down there,” Taylor told the crowd.

Following the trend of incumbent losses, William “Cruz” Shaw took the District 2 council seat from Alan Warrick with a remarkable 13-point lead – owed mostly likely to the fact that Warrick made headlines after drinking so much he passed out on a City Hall park bench two weeks before the runoff election. Downtown councilman Roberto Treviño held onto his District 1 post.

Back at Nirenberg’s Broadway campaign headquarters, former Mayor Julian Castro, his brother Congressman Joaquin Castro, and a gaggle of other local left-leaning politicians rallied behind their new mayor. Councilman Rey Saldaña told the Current that the election’s results proved San Antonio “is a city that is progressive, a city that rewards candidates that step up on important and sometimes controversial issues.”

LOST LOCKUP Federal judge calls a critical part of Texas’ ‘sanctuary cities’ crackdown unconstitutional

The same San Antonio federal court judge who will soon decide whether Texas can enforce its new law banning so-called “sanctuary cities” just explained in a separate ruling why a major portion of the law appears to be unconstitutional.

U.S. District Court Judge Orlando Garcia ruled last week that the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office violated the Fourth Amendment’s prohibition on unreasonable search and seizure when jailers detained an undocumented immigrant for more than two months in 2016 after a misdemeanor charge against him was dismissed. Lawyers for the man had challenged BCSO's longstanding practice of granting so-called immigration “detainers,” routine requests from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for local jails to hold people suspected of federal immigration violations, even if their local charges have been dismissed or otherwise resolved. Lawyers across the country have argued that such requests are often flawed, haphazard and fall well below the legal standard of a warrant or judge’s order.

In his ruling, Judge Garcia concluded that the case of Julio Trujillo, who court records show was arrested and charged with the misdemeanor assault of his girlfriend in January 2016, is an example of how the detainer system can lead to warrantless, unconstitutional detention. Trujillo’s lawyers say he spent a total of 76 days in Bexar County lockup after his charge was dismissed because of a detainer request ICE had lodged with the county.

In his ruling last week, Garcia said the county had wrongly assumed that ICE detainers, which are usually over alleged civil immigration violations and not criminal matters, constitute probable cause. He wrote that the “routine detention of such individuals made it inevitable that it (the county) would engage in warrantless detention of individuals who were not suspected of any criminal offense.”

Lawyers challenging the state’s new immigration law, Senate Bill 4, say the ruling should prove useful as cities and counties across the state sue to block the law from going into effect on September 1. Under SB 4, local officials who don’t comply with all ICE detainers risk being booted out of office or even criminally charged.

Nina Perales, vice president of litigation for the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund, which earlier this month sued the state on behalf of the City of San Antonio to block SB 4, said Garcia’s ruling bolsters the argument that the law would force local cops to violate the constitution. “This gives us a clear, specific example of how SB 4 forces officials to violate the Fourth Amendment, to detain people in violation of the constitution,” she told the Current.

Changes in how Travis County handled ICE detainers earlier this year (that jailers would only comply if a suspect was accused of a serious or violent crime, like sexual assault, murder or human smuggling) are what initially fueled Gov. Greg

Abbott’s war against “sanctuary” jurisdictions ahead of the legislative session. Abbott made eradicating “sanctuary cities” a priority item for the session, and the resulting bill he signed into law last month opens the door for any cop in the state to inquire about immigration status in any routine police encounter, like a traffic stop. The law even applies to college and university police departments.

While Bexar County officials recently voted to join San Antonio’s lawsuit over SB 4, the local jail is still complying with ICE detainers that civil rights lawyers say are unconstitutional. “I think this decision handed down by the judge makes it pretty clear that we’ve been violating people’s rights in some instances,” Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff told the Current on Friday. He said county officials are meeting with the District Attorney’s Office to discuss how to respond to the ruling. Ultimately, Wolff conceded, the decision over ICE detainers falls to Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar (who hadn’t responded to our requests for comment by press deadline).

Meanwhile, Commissioner Tommy Calvert told us that the county “has no choice but to change how we’re doing things” because of the court ruling. He says officials need the flexibility to change policies without fear of retaliation from the state. He says the judge's ruling underscores why SB 4 is so damaging.

Calvert called it one of the more “cynical” bills he’s seen come out of the legislature, yet another state attempt to override local control. “They didn’t even try to tailor the law to the constitution,” Calvert said.

“They didn’t care.”

Trujillo’s attorney, Lance Curtright, says his client’s case shows how the debate over SB 4 isn’t abstract. Trujillo immigrated to the country when he was 4 years old, attending grade school in Chicago and high school in Atlanta before he moved to Texas. His parents are U.S. citizens, as are two of his children and his grandchild. Other than the misdemeanor charge that landed him in jail and was ultimately dismissed, records show no other criminal history. Court documents do, however, indicate that he was deported in late 2001 (it’s unclear when he re-entered the country).

Curtright says Trujillo was supporting his girlfriend and her two children when he was arrested and detained for more than two months without charge last year. “My girlfriend was kicked out of our apartment because she could no longer afford it,” Trujillo said in an affidavit filed in court. “We had a three-bedroom apartment which was completely furnished, and she had to sell all our furniture to make ends meet.”

Curtright says Garcia’s ruling, which comes weeks before the judge hears arguments to block SB 4 from going into effect, makes it clear that police can’t detain someone solely because they’re suspected of being undocumented. “Simply being undocumented in the United States is not a criminal act, and therefore they can’t just detain you for it without a warrant,” he said.

▶ Pure Land Buddhism is an ancient spiritual practice based on the belief in the Buddha of Western Paradise, Amitabha, who grants entrance to heaven to those who call out to him. Offering simple salvation, Pure Land Buddhism appealed to the masses, spreading through Asia like wildfire — igniting spiritual awakening and resulting in stunning relics and artworks. The San Antonio Museum of Art’s “Heaven and Hell” exhibition is a collection of 75 sculptures, paintings and other works that epitomize the lasting beliefs of Pure Land Buddhism in countries like Japan, India, China, Korea and Tibet. The majority of displayed works are rooted in the Japanese culture of Pure Land Buddhism depicting salvation through Amitabha’s journey to Earth to claim dying souls, bringing them up to his heavenly paradise. THEATER ▲ In previous years, AtticRep has offered a partial remedy to theatrical provincialism by importing troupes from Austria, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, Germany, Hungary, Italy and Switzerland. This year, AtticRep’s third International Fest of Theatre offers productions from India, the United States and Mexico. The politically charged issue of immigration figures prominently in Through the Wall: A Traves del Muro,, scheduled for June 16, 17 and 18. Playwright Regina Moya, who grew up in Mexico City and lives in San Antonio, began by interviewing Mexican immigrants who crossed the border illegally. ▶ Though anthropologists still debate the exact origins of cumbia, the music genre has deep roots in the African, European and indigenous communities that spread throughout Latin America. The genre features percussion instruments like the merry and calling drums familiar to African culture, blending bass with the sounds of Millo flutes and other wind instruments, all mixed with interpreted traditional European music, dance and costume styles. Today, strains of cumbia can be heard trickling into modern genres ranging from Afrobeat to rock and pop.

◀ Smartly summed up by Turner Classic Movies as a playful pastiche of “familiar motifs such as shootouts, train robberies, posses in pursuit, and frontier romance,” director Elliot Silverstein’s Cat Ballou stands out as a slightly dark satire of the entire Western genre. Based on Roy Chanslor’s novel The Ballad of Cat Ballou, Ballou the 1965 classic stars Jane Fonda as a prim but toughtalking schoolteacher who hires boozy gunfighter Kid Shelleen (Lee Marvin) to protect her daddy’s ranch — and later avenge his murder with assistance from a motley crew of outlaws. At a time when many San Antonians are cringing over the thought of a plexiglass wall surrounding Alamo Plaza (wouldn’t that be fun to clean?) and other bizarre missteps in Philadelphia-based Preservation Design Partnership’s “Master Plan” promising to “Reimagine the Alamo” (subtitle: “A New Vision for Sacred Ground”), artist Cosby Lindquist’s small but powerful FL!GHT Gallery exhibition “Not Much Larger Than a Taco Bell” looks and feels especially relevant. Although it doesn’t directly reference the highly controversial, $450 million plan City Council unanimously approved on May 11, Lindquist’s ongoing photographic series does in fact “Reimagine the Alamo” by

depicting an eclectic assortment of establishments modeled after our iconic “Shrine of Texas Liberty.”

An Ohio native who teaches photography, lighting and Photoshop at both the Art Institute of San Antonio and The Camera Exchange, Lindquist moved here with admitted “preconceived ideas about Texas” and rightly assumed he’d find “numerous buildings that look like the Alamo” across the Lone Star State. Since scouting his first location (Alamo Federal Credit Union off Interstate 10), Lindquist has relied on tips from friends, Google Maps, online discussion threads and forums dedicated to the Alamo (and John Wayne) to track

Often captured on Sunday mornings, these images are curiously devoid of humans and vehicles, which gives them a cinematic, even painterly quality and also magnifies odd characteristics — decorative cannons flank the entrance of Alamo Custom & Collision; Alamo Mobility boasts a thoughtful abundance of handicap parking; Many Pawn & Jewelry retains signage from former occupants the Robert Gentry Museum and Sweet Dreams Publishing Co.; and My Little Taco House (renamed PapaGayos for its appearance in the 1997 biopic Selena) looks as if its Alamo theme was something of an afterthought based on a makeshift add-on parked on top of the building.

Still actively working on the project, Lindquist hopes collectors will snap up his 13” x 19” prints ($400 unframed, $500 framed and mounted) to help fund trips to photograph other locations on his radar (in El Paso, Dallas and Laredo). Best known as the set for John Wayne’s 1960 movie The Alamo, the former tourist attraction Alamo Village in Brackettville remains a “white whale” for Lindquist. “It’s impossible to access without permission and the area is crawling with border patrol,” Lindquist told us. “If anyone knows the owners and can get me in, let me know!”

Offering a humorous and telling complement to these photos are framed tourist “reviews” of the Alamo that Lindquist “plucked” from the internet. “I was really fascinated by the way people compared their expectations with reality,” Lindquist said.

“It’s humorous how people describe their disappointment. I don’t really understand how people can leave a review for a historical site like it’s a restaurant on Yelp.” While one reviewer found the Alamo to be “nothing special … literally a small, beat-up building made of sand and rock,” another critiqued its size, claiming “It’s small and can be viewed in minutes. It looks like a Taco Bell restaurant” (hence the exhibition title).

When it comes to the looming Alamo “Master Plan,” Lindquist is not a fan. “While the current layout might not be perfect, the new plan removes the communal aspect of the space,” he said. “The space is used as the community sees fit, and that includes everything from selling ice cream, panhandling, preaching, and protest. I think the walls will do a lot to curtail freedom of speech.”

FL!GHT Gallery’s “senior creative co-conspirator” Ed Saavedra also has thoughts on the matter that will likely be voiced during a gallery talk with Lindquist scheduled for Wednesday, June 14. “Only a few weeks ago, despite widespread heterogeneous opposition, City Council unanimously shoved the ‘Reimagine the Alamo’ boondoggle one step closer to its nightmarish reality,” Saavedra told us. “The ‘Master Plan’ still calls for the removal of centenarian live oak and anacua trees from “Not Much Larger what doubles as the state’s number one tourist attraction as well as our Than a Taco Bell” city’s premier public civic space. If colossal blockbusters are the types of movies you’re looking for this summer, there will be plenty to choose from in the next couple of months — Transformers: The Last Knight, Spider-Man: Homecoming and The Dark Tower, to name a few.

However, if you’re in the mood for more of a “special movie-going experience,” Texas Public Radio’s Cinema Tuesdays (through August 15) is where you want to be.

Along with classic films like the Marx Brothers’ 1933 comedy Duck Soup and groundbreaking documentaries like 2016’s Tower, TPR will screen 10 short films that were nominated for an Academy Award earlier this year in the Animated Short and Live-Action Short categories.

“I program Oscar shorts every year because folks miss them in the rush toward the Oscar ceremony,” said Nathan Cone, vice president of cultural and community engagement for TPR. “Folks love the varied themes and creative approaches these filmmakers bring to the craft. Plus, you get 10 movies in one night!”

For the animated shorts, Pixar’s Oscar-winning Piper (dir.

Alan Barillaro) will headline the category. The film follows the adventures of a hungry baby sandpiper as it hunts for food on the seashore and overcomes its fear of the water.

It took Barillaro and his animation team three years to complete the six-minute film.

The other nominees in the animated shorts category screening are Blind Vaysha (dir. Theodore Ushev), an eight-minute Canadian short about a young girl who can see the past out of one eye and the future out of the other; Borrowed Time (dirs. Andrew Coats and Lou Hamou-Lhadj), a seven-minute Western featuring a weather-beaten sheriff confronting his painful past; Pear Cider and Cigarettes (dir.

Robert Valley), a 35-minute graphic-novel-inspired short from Canada, which follows a man who travels to China to help his sick best friend get home to Vancouver; and Pearl (dir.

Patrick Osborne), a six-minute short that follows a girl and her father on a cross-country road trip. Pearl is the first virtual reality film ever to be nominated for an Oscar.

In the live-action shorts category, the 25-minute Oscarwinning Hungarian film Sing (dir. Kristóf Deák) tells the story of a young girl living in Budapest who joins the award-winning choir at her new school, but is told by her teacher not to sing aloud because she is not good enough.

Along with Sing, the other nominated films screening are Ennemis Intérieurs (dir. Sélim Azzazi), a 27-minute French drama about a French-Algerian man who is accused of protecting the identities of terrorists; La Femme et le TGV (dir. Timo von Gunten), a 30-minute Swiss short featuring a lonely widow living in Switzerland who begins a relationship with a train driver; Silent Nights (dir. Aske Bang), a 30-minute Danish short about a volunteer at a shelter who falls in love with an undocumented immigrant; and Timecode (dir. Juanjo Giménez), a 15-minute short from Spain that follows the lives of two parking lot security guards.

> There’s more sushi on the way via the folks behind Yellowfish.

The Japamex shop, which first opened off Wurzbach and now includes a second location off Huebner Road, announced it’ll open a third location at The Rim via social media.

The shops are known for their playful takes on sushi that combine Japanese and Mexican flavors and dishes. Hand rolls become Japanese tacos, and yes, they serve sushiritos known as Japarritos, all featuring a spicy salsa kick.

We put in a call to the original location, but learned they don’t have a date for The Rim’s opening just yet.

Sage at Brooklynite satisfies

> Bar food can often be hit or miss. Whether it’s too rich, too pricy, a potluck or a batch of fresh popcorn still in its warmer, bar food is a bit of a gamble. The Brooklynite’s third attempt at food (first there were food trucks, then gourmet corn dogs) this time is by the catering and event company known as Honeysuckle Teatime, which is taking on savory fare with Sage.

Offered Tuesday through Saturday from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. on weekends, the menu is simple enough to navigate. Bar-goers choose from bites, balls and sauce, and sides with prices ranging from $4 to $8. The Brooklynite was relatively hopping during our visit and our

bartender informed us we needed to order the food from a server/runner. This was perhaps the only quibble of the night as we didn’t want to flag him and there was no post to pin our order to.

Teensy pencils were available to jot down our order on the square menu, and yes, you’re supposed to mix and match your balls and sauces. We ordered the beef with brown butter gravy (more on this later) and sage sausage with pesto along with the pepperoni biscuits and herbed mashed potatoes.

Because everything is prepared off site and then served at The Brooklynite’s tiny kitchen space, the orders come out quickly. Everything’s served on either wooden charcuterie boards (charc is supposedly on the way soon), or brown disposable carry-out boxes. The pepperoni biscuits were fluffy and a way to relive past snack times filled with pizza rolls, while the ricotta was fresh and dreamy with just a hint of lemon zest. The balls, both sage and beef, were still moist and there were at least five sizable balls per order.

If you’re going to have a handful of menu items, you better deliver, and that’s exactly what the Sage crew is doing with their sauces. The rich brown butter gravy could easily go on any of the balls (or even the mashed potatoes if you’re feeling indulgent), and the pesto was so bright and fresh one could easily pinpoint basil, mint and parsley added to the mix.

The kitchen did sent out the pea hummus and crisps and mushroom balls for us to try. Though the hummus

was delicate and perfectly blended, and the crisps were playful, the mushroom balls were a miss. The flavors of shiitake and earth were present in a wonderful way, but the consistency was too sandy.

And if you’re familiar with the donuts used to top Honeysuckle milkshakes, you’ll want to dabble in the $7 donut ice cream sandwich. Flavors rotate, but our lavender donut with Earl Grey ice cream was a hit.

Fur-fans of PAWsitively Sweet Bakery will fi nally have a place to pick up treats during the week with the opening of the bakery’s fi rst retail shop on June 24 on the city’s East Side.

Owner Alexis Quiroga — who launched the farmers market favorite at the ripe age of 20 in 2013 — says the space off Commerce will allow for more biscuit balls, along with new products such as pig snouts, cow hooves, and an expanded jerky line. The new location, which Quiroga says sits at 1,000 square feet, will also include a dog run and serve as an event space.

Ingram Park Mall adds macarons

> Macarons (not to be confused with newly elected French president Emmanuel Macron) hit the Ingram Hills area this week with the opening of Woops! inside Ingram Park Mall on Thursday. The franchise will operate as a kiosk serving the Parisian treats in 20 flavors.

Launched in 2012 as a pop-up by a group of creatives, Woops! now has kiosks and bakeshops in 12 states including Arizona, Colorado, Delaware, Georgia and Tennessee. Flavors include espresso macchiato, strawberry milkshake, rose, cookies and cream and more.

≥ Like most evolving music scenes, San Antonio’s is relatively roomy and all-inclusive to whoever wants to be a part of it. If you’ve got some cool shit you’re working on (be it electronic, acoustic, occultish, whatever), there’s probably an audience for you somewhere here.

While there are obviously a variety of genres that fall underneath the blanket term “electronic music,” here are 10 local projects that harness the synthetic to produce some pretty amazing music.

Wolf Party • A lot of artists that fall under the umbrella term “noise” sometimes look they don’t know what the hell they’re doing on stage. Sometimes that’s the point. Wolf Party, however, demonstrates a control over his electronic noise making machines which makes watching him tear through violent moments of distortion really beautiful to watch.

Thomas has recently released the debut album Magenta from his latest project, Saturn Skies. Miller Band, Boz Scaggs has had an important role in rock and roll history. The songwriter, who eventually penned hits like “Lido Shuffle” and “Lowdown”, met Steve Miller in high school and began collaborating through college but left to Europe and spent some time in the steadily growing London R&B scene. Shortly after, Scaggs came back to the U.S. and joined The Steve Miller Band for their first two albums before eventually leaving Miller again to focus on his solo work.

Scaggs ended up releasing several albums over the years, including one with session musicians who would end up forming the band Toto. It’s not exactly news that we’re smack dab in the middle of a psych-rock revival. Fests like Levitation (formerly Austin Psych Fest), and Psych Del Rio (which is coming in September), prove that the audience for trippy music is growing and bands like LA’s Mystic Braves are more relevant now than ever.

Combining desert blues guitar riffs with noodly organs and reverberating vocals that echo to infinity, Mystic Braves have been swirling audiences in kaleidoscope rays of sound since their 2013 self-titled debut. It seems like the 1990s was when R&B started to land more in the arena of popculture. There was more representation, especially when heavy hitters like Aaliyah, Missy Elliott, Usher and Musiq Soulchild were snagging spots on music video countdowns. But, lately it seems like there’s less of of it and that’s a shame really, considering there’s artists like Anthony Hamilton still pushing the genre forward through the 2010s. Born and raised in Charlotte, NC, got his start singing in his church choir before moving to NYC to pursue a singing career.

From there he toured as a back-up singer for D’Angelo, and eventually started releasing records and collaborating with other artists in the hip hop and R&B world like in 2004 when he won a Grammy for a song he performed with Al Green. THE SH-BOOMS At first listen, anyone can tell that The Sh-Booms have a wide variety of influences: From surf and garage rock to 70s soul and R&B, this Orlando sextuplet is doing some pretty interesting shit. Their singer Brenda Radney actually was noticed by Justin Timberlake through a contest, where the winner would win an opportunity to sing with Timberlake at the 2007 Grammy’s. Though she didn’t win the contest, her vocal talent secured her a slot on the former NSYNC member’s label Tennmen Records. However, 8 years later, after feeling artistically stifled, Radney decided to leave the label and focus on her group. BROWNOUT Formed over a decade ago by members of the Grammy-winning ATX cumbia crew Grupo Fantasma, Brownout is a hardcore Latin funk ensemble.
