A robbery and impromptu mail heist, followed by two gun battles and a series of high speed chases, led to the manhunt that briefly shut down parts of North Star Mall last week, according to federal court records.

Last Wednesday, police arrested Bradley J. A’Hearn, 22, Sara Richford, 26, and Piper Allan Lee, 40, claiming they’re the suspects behind a four-day trail of car chases and shootings that followed the attack on a U.S. Mail carrier in the Texas Hill Country earlier this month.

Court records allege A’Hearn approached the mail carrier the morning of February 11, while she was on her route in Spring Branch, and demanded she turn over her cell phone. When she refused, he shot her in the leg and stole her truck, which she used to deliver the mail — meaning he also stole, according to records, “a considerable amount of U.S. Mail.” According to records, A’Hearn later explained that he “shot the bitch because she wouldn’t give me her phone.” (Police say she suffered non-life-threatening injuries.)

Apparently lying low for a bit didn’t cross A’Hearn’s mind. Two days later, a U.S. Postal Inspection Service agent spotted him traveling in the stolen truck about a half-mile away from where he’d robbed the postal worker. When the agent tried to stop the truck, it fl ed. Court records say A’Hearn fi red at the offi cers who chased but couldn’t catch him (it’s unclear if police returned fi re).

The next day, Valentine’s day, employees at a San Antonio motel (court records say somewhere near 281) called police about some odd guests who had “a large amount of U.S. Mail and a handgun” in their room.

According to court records, the motel staff turned over to police a large bag of trash the suspects had left outside their room — it was a bunch of opened, rifled through mail. Court records also indicate there was

plenty of personal identifying information in that mail, “specifically a large number of W-2 tax forms.”

Meanwhile, investigators found the wounded mail carrier’s stolen truck abandoned not far away. They also learned A’Hearn and the other suspects were now riding in a different car — a yellow Volkswagen bearing the license plate “DOPEST.” So federal agents followed “DOPEST” and then eventually asked San Antonio Police Department officers to make a traffic stop near Broadway and Loop 410, but when they attempted a stop, someone inside the car started shooting at officers. According to the Express-News, bullets hit a nearby Jim’s Restaurant, a tire shop and a U-Haul. That’s when “DOPEST” took off for North Star Mall, hiding in a parking garage to avoid the helicopters swarming overhead.

Despite local, state and federal law enforcement that flooded the area last Tuesday, the suspects escaped. Lucky enough for investigators, the following day, someone only identified in court records as a “confidential source” contacted police saying one of the suspects, Sara Richford, had called her on Valentine’s Day asking for a ride. When the source picked her up, Richford was with two men, one of whom had a gun.

All three were bragging about the chase — the shooting at Jim’s, running away from police at North Star Mall, racing the wrong way down a one way street.

The suspects asked the source to take them to a downtown hotel, where she got a room for them and left. SAPD Chief William McManus later told reporters an SAPD SWAT team arrested all three suspects without incident last Wednesday at the Sunset Inn Motel off Roosevelt and Steves.

When asked about what led up to the manhunt at North Star, McManus called it “a relatively complicated saga.”

How does it make you feel to hear or see the words “President Donald Trump”?

San Antonio Spurs Coach Gregg Popovich says the post-Trump world has left him feeling this way: “Some days I feel like we’ve been invaded by another power and taken over [by people] who don’t feel the same.”

“It’s a strange land.”

Pop’s comments came after a question last week, before the Spurs’ win in Indiana, about how his upbringing affects his worldview; the coach grew up in a blue-collar, racially diverse East Chicago neighborhood that he’s described as “a white family here, a Puerto Rican family there, a Polish or Czech family over there.” Eventually, Popovich made his way to Trump, calling the president’s behavior “unacceptable and really disgusting.” “[Trump’s] personality and his inability to get over himself and form his words and his decisions,” Popovich said. “That’s what scares me.”

Popovich is, of course, no stranger to spontaneous bouts of political pontificating. Just days after Trump’s election, he let loose the kind of emotional word vomit coming out of many millions of confused, frightened and deeply wounded people who did not vote for Trump and think we’ve entered the Upside Down. Or, as Popovich put it, “We are Rome.”

Earlier this month, when the topic was Black History Month, Pop used his pulpit to call racism “our national sin” and reiterate that white people in this country still enjoy a “monstrous advantage.”

This time around, Popovich seems particularly freaked by the direction of the federal government under a Trump Administration, and delivers what sounds like a crack against Trump’s merry gang of under-qualified and/or conflict-ridden cabinet appointees: “The situation now, I find a lot of people are in charge – or will be in charge shortly when they’re nominated – have very little clue about what many, many people have to go through to live in this world.”

BAD APPLES SAPD will fire you for having sex on-duty.

Here’s what they won’t fire you for doing.

Last week, there were more reports of headlinegrabbing misconduct by members of the San Antonio Police Department. This time, they focused on two cops who couldn’t wait until they were off-duty to sneak away and have sex in a Home Depot parking lot.

As KSAT first reported (KSAT obtained 160 pages of text messages this week), officers Eman Fondren and Rebecca Martinez (four- and seven-year veterans of the department, respectively) are currently appealing their “indefinite suspensions,” or terminations, as allowed under the City of San Antonio’s contract with the local police union. Their lawyer, in an interview with the station, argued that department records indicate they were never alone on duty long enough to have sex. Text messages the two exchanged while on duty, however, indicate otherwise. “I can’t believe u put yourself out..

Drive to HD, drove to the parking lot.. Stripped, did me, came and got dressed again in 15 min,” Fondren texted Martinez at one point. “That blows my mind!”

It’s the kind of “bad apple” situation SAPD Chief William McManus insists is rare and would likely point to as a sign SAPD swiftly and seriously addresses misconduct within its ranks. Sgt. Jesse Salame, a department spokesman, told KSAT that Fondren and Martinez engaged in conduct that was “not at all ethical” and “not at all professional,” adding, “Certainly that’s something that we’re not going to tolerate in this department."

Depends on what you mean by “tolerate.”

While Fondren and Martinez were fired for, among other things, violating the department’s rules on “good conduct and behavior,” disciplinary records show other cops who kept their jobs for breaches that seem just as, if not more, alarming.

City disciplinary records from the past two years show several officers who weren’t fired after being accused of behavior at least as egregious as quickies on the clock. Like the officer who had cops twice called out to his house for “disturbances” that involved allegations of domestic abuse. Or the police officers who got caught trying to cover up for fellow cops accused of serious misconduct. Or the officer who kept his job after a match.com date accused him of groping her without her consent, while on duty and inside his cruiser.

When we asked Salame about the disparity, he

directed us to disciplinary procedures outlined in SAPD’s general manual, which stresses that “a high standard of conduct and discipline” is paramount in preserving community trust and confidence in police.

But the department also practices what it calls “progressive discipline,” which basically means they look at each case individually — or as Salame put it, “Every instance is looked upon in its totality.”

Alleged violations of the department’s rules and regulations generally fit into two silos — minor complaints, or so-called “line complaints,” and formal complaints, which include allegations of unnecessary force and are supposed to be taken more seriously by the department.

But thanks to “progressive discipline,” there’s no single correct way to handle, say, the case of a 40-year-old cop who has sex with the 18-year-old high school student he’s supposed to be mentoring at the department.

“Progressive discipline.” It’s the same general approach police take to judging whether a cop did anything wrong if he shoots and kills a suspect for wielding nothing more than a cell phone. It’s why the chief might try to fire an officer if he makes a mistake that results in the shooting death of an unarmed citizen.

It’s also why the chief can change his mind, step back, and order more training instead of punishment for that officer in the very same case.

Among officers suspended, but not fired in recent years for violations of SAPD’s rules on “good conduct and behavior” is officer Humberto Zuniga. He was suspended in 2015 for five days after complaints reached SAPD of him trying to pressure his exgirlfriend into dropping a small-claims case against him (she claimed he owed her $8,000 she’d loaned him) by threatening to send sexually explicit videos of her to her families and friends. According to suspension records, he joked the revenge porn “would make good Mother’s Day gifts.”

Officer Harold Thomaston meanwhile received a 25-day suspension last year for meeting his match.com date on duty, while in uniform; according to suspension records, the woman told police that Thomaston “touched her breasts and legs without her consent.” The problematic “conduct and behavior” that resulted in a 15-day suspension for officer Moses Berban in 2014?

According to suspension records, Berban was driving his cruiser along Wurzbach when, on the opposite

side of the road, he spotted a 16-year-old “allegedly displaying an obscene gesture toward him.” Berban, according to his suspension, turned his car around, jumped the median, chased the kid down and “engaged in a profane verbal exchange” before grabbing him by the head and slamming him to the ground. Oh, and Berban happened to forget to turn on his departmentissued recording devices before he did it.

Perhaps SAPD seeks to fire Fondren and Martinez because two cops strip-searching each other on the job is exactly the kind of thing that can undermine the kind of trust officials say they’re trying hard to build between police and policed in San Antonio right now.

But what to make of officer Gary Nel, who in 2014 kept his job after being accused of covering up for an officer he’d arrested while out on DUI patrol one night, only to let him go once he found out he was a fellow cop? Nel, a repeat offender, was handed another suspension two months later — this time for choosing Whataburger over his job. Or the 3-day suspension for Sgt. Michael Garcia, who was supposed to be investigating a fellow cop who got into a fight while off-duty. Here’s how Garcia explained his job to fellow officers, according to his suspension records: “Basically, what we are trying to do is cover the officer.”

Garcia told fellow police officers they’d need to do “extra” work to clear the case, since the other guy in the fight “looked like he had the shit kicked out of him.”

Or maybe you’re one of the victims who called for help last year but instead got officer Erik Rodriguez, who was suspended but still kept his job after the department discovered he’d failed to properly respond to, investigate, or even file accurate reports for serious complaints involving child predators and domestic batterers. Perhaps you’ve encountered someone like officer Hector Gallardo, who was suspended for 10 days last year due to his conduct while responding to a reported assault. According to suspension records, Gallardo cracked racially insensitive jokes while on scene (“What’s this girl’s name? Laquanda?”) and even admitted he’d filed bogus charges against one guy because, in his words, “I figured we’d fuck him over so he doesn’t talk shit or call and complain on us.”

Maybe it’s not so much the bad apples SAPD tosses that we should be paying attention to, but rather the ones it decides to throw back in the bunch.

83 percent of Texas school district teach abstinence-only sex ed — or none at all

The vast majority of school districts in Texas, the state with a skyrocketing teen pregnancy rate, teach abstinence-only sex education — that is, if they teach it at all.

According to a new report by left-leaning advocacy group Texas Freedom Network, more than 25 percent of state school districts didn’t offer any sex education to its students in the 2015-16 school year. And in more than 53 percent of Texas’ classrooms, students were told to just not have sex.

“Texas is failing our students and their families,” TFN President Kathy Miller said in a statement. “We have to trust young people with the information they need to make wise decisions about their reproductive health and their future. Ignorance won’t protect them.”

But the report notes that these stats are, in fact, an improvement.

Eight years ago, there were 96 percent of Texas school districts taught abstinence-only or no sex education.

High schools across Texas have grabbed national attention for their neglect to properly educate their sexually-active students (surprise!

Teenagers are still going to have sex even if you tell them not to).

In 2015, nearly ten percent of students at Texas’ tiny Crane High School caught chlamydia, and doctors pointed to the schools’ abstinenceonly education as the culprit. How were students supposed to protect themselves from STDs if they didn’t know they existed (let alone had access to condoms)? And in 2013, a sex ed curriculum leaked from North Texas’ Canyon Independent School District was found directing teachers to compare sexually-active teens to chewed up pieces of gum.

According to last week’s report, abstinence-only programs in Texas continue to spout shaming rhetoric and straight-up misinformation. One program gives students a complicated, six-step guide to putting on a condom. Some oddly ask teachers to call the use of contraception “high risk” sexual behavior. Others simply ignore the existence of birth control.

Many of these courses appear to erase the existence of LGBT students and their questions about sex. In the words of the TFN report, “Most sex education in Texas seems to assume that all students in the classroom are heterosexual and that LGBT people are irrelevant or don’t exist.”

Unlink dozens of other states, there’s nothing in Texas’ current sex ed laws that require the classes to teach medically accurate, unbiased, or nonreligious information. While there is one bill in the current legislature meant to insure these guidelines, its met with other filed legislation hoping to further cut out vital sex ed.

“Our students deserve far better than the myths and misinformation they learn in many sex education classes,” said Rep. Mary González, who filed House Bill 1547 that would require sex education classes to include evidence-based and medically accurate information. “This legislature should act to ensure that all sex education classes are fact-based and give students this critical information.”

It only took state Sen. Charles Schwertner ten minutes of listening to testimony against antiabortion bills before he broke a table.

Schwertner, the Republican chair of the Texas Senate’s Committee on Health and Human Services, spent last Wednesday morning introducing and defending a bill that would ban most women from donating fetal tissue from their abortions to science. His legislation was bundled with two other anti-abortion bills — one to throw out the safest abortion procedure for second-trimester pregnancies, the other to mandate all abortion remains are buried and cremated — penned by two other GOP senators, Charles Perry and Don Huffines.

After discussing the bills amongst themselves, the committee opened the floor to three hours of public testimony — which started with a bang.

“I’m here on behalf of all absent women, families and doctors across the state whose lives will be negatively impacted by this bill,” began the testimony of Maggie Hennessy, a UT student and intern with NARAL ProChoice Texas. She was the fourth person to speak (of more than 50).

Hennessy verbally shredded Sen. Huffines bill against second-trimester abortions. Her voice shook with anger as she scolded lawmakers for openly putting women in danger.

“Your time is done.”

But Hennessy went on, saying, “I urge you to all stop playing with reproductive health care like it’s your own political puppet.” That’s when Schwertner dropped the gavel — so hard that he shattered the glass table before him.

“Your time is done,” he repeated.

That Schwertner broke a table while trying to silence a woman opposing a bill that would solely impact women is all the more jarring considering the events that grabbed headlines last week. During the February 8 confirmation hearing for nowAttorney General Jeff Sessions, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell used an arcane senate rule to silence U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s criticism of the former senator (which, perhaps to McConnell’s chagrin, made her testimony go viral). Schwertner’s reaction, coupled with McConnell’s, sends a jolting message to Texas women.

And if Schwertner was really tablebreaking concerned about the time allotted for public testimony, he probably wouldn’t have let the first speaker (and dozens after), a representative from the anti-abortion advocacy group Texas Right to Life, ramble on in support for twice as long as Hennessy was allowed to speak.

Think of a contemporary version of Luis Buñuel’s Los Olvidados (1950) on skateboards (9 p.m. Friday, March 3).

The haunting and visually stunning Tempestad, the second film by Mexican/Salvadoran director Tatiana Huezo (2011’s El Lugar Más Pequeño, Best Feature Documentary winner at the Ariel Awards, Mexico’s equivalent to the Oscars), tells the story of two women victimized by Mexico’s corrupt police, but this unconventional documentary has a poetic beauty that takes viewers to a place that would make Terrence Malick proud (2 p.m. Saturday, February 25).

As usual with CineFestival, young local fi lmmakers are included in the program via The Future Is Now: Youth Videos from San Antonio, which screens Monday, February 27 at 6 p.m., with an Awards Ceremony to follow (free admission).

On a lighter (but equally intoxicating) note, Marco Ortega’s Brewed in the 210 documents the San Antonio beer scene, where brewers proudly share their “mission from God” to make sure you don’t ever have to go thirsty again. I don’t even drink beer, but I was quickly hooked by this well-executed, informative and entertaining doc about a passion shared by many San Antonians (8 p.m. Tuesday, February 28).

Fri 2.24 Opening Night: Dolores Peter Bratt’s first doc (after narrative features Follow Me Home and La Mission) attempts to set the record straight about UFW co-founder Dolores Huerta (still active at age 86), the beloved and controversial labor leader and civil rights activist often overshadowed by César Chávez’s accomplishments and the UFW’s own sexism after Chávez’s passing. The film (executive produced by Carlos Santana) recently premiered at Sundance, where it earned a standing ovation. By all accounts, it’s a powerful film and not a simple hagiography. Progressives were understandably upset with Huerta’s decision to support Hillary Clinton instead of Bernie Sanders in last year’s elections, and actress Rosario Dawson (who portrayed Huerta in 2014’s César Chávez, directed by Diego Luna) called her out for it. Huerta replied that she thought Hillary would be better for Latinos and, “when the dust settles … we’re going to be together.” Although the dust hasn’t exactly settled, anyone who keeps on fighting at age 86 — after almost losing her life to police brutality at age 58 — deserves a long line of credit among true progressives. Fri 3.3 Free Senior Screening: Nosotros los Pobres The first in a trilogy, 1948’s Nosotros los Pobres (We, the Poor) is one of the most beloved films in the Golden Age of Mexican Cinema (it was followed by You, the Rich and Pepe, the Bull.) Directed by Ismael Rodríguez, the film also provides a fine reminder of the legendary Pedro Infante, a superstar who, before his untimely death in a plane crash at age 39, excelled as a singer and actor with unbelievable range.

The long association of Rodríguez and Infante would earn its ultimate international recognition when Infante won the Berlin Film Festival’s Silver Bear for Best Actor for Tizoc (1957), also directed by Rodríguez. Sat 3.4 500 Years The ultimate resistencia film in this year’s CineFestival, 500 Years is the third in a Pamela Yates trilogy that includes When the Mountains Tremble (1983) and Granito: How to Nail a Dictator (2011). It follows the genocide trial of former dictator General Efraín Ríos Montt and the citizens’ uprising that ended the reign of President Otto Pérez Molina. In all of these events, the indigenous populations played a major role in the struggle. Sat 3.4 Closing Night: Best of Culture Clash TV Show (1993-96) The Culture Clash TV show (30 episodes that aired on Fox), led by the namesake Chicano comedy troupe of Richard Montoya, Herbert Siguenza and Ric Salinas, was a hit-and-miss affair. But when they hit, they were right on the money. “They were talking about immigration, police brutality, all the issues that are relevant now,” said festival curator Jim Mendiola. “I think that show was ahead of its time and wasn’t really appreciated [then]. What we’re doing is going back to the archives and putting together a 90-minute show with the best of Culture Clash. ◀ Although Orlando-based Tyra Sanchez was officially elected America’s Next Drag Superstar back in 2010, one could argue the popular vote that year went to Puerto Rico’s Jessica Wild, who landed on the second season of RuPaul’s Drag Race not by charming producers but by amassing the most votes in an online casting competition — prompting Entertainment Weekly to dub her “the choice of the people.” The tireless and good-natured alter ego of dancer, choreographer, vocalist and makeup artist José David Sierra, Wild admittedly struggled with a language barrier but also used it to wisely steer clear of bitch sessions in the Illusions Lounge. “I preferred to remain silent and not be part of that type of conversation, no matter what the language,” Wild told LOGO TV’s John Polly in her exit interview. “I know people want drama, it is, after all, a reality show. ▲ When local cultural activist Aundar Martin decided last year that he wanted to present his message of “Black pride, self-reliance and human rights” through the art of cinema, he decided to adapt his 2011 stage play Message to the People: A Story of Malcolm X into an

independent film. Martin, who organizes and hosts cultural festivals and events around the city, including the Kwanzaa Market Festival and the PanAfrican Festival, portrays the late Muslim minister and human rights activist in both the play and the new film, which makes

its San Antonio debut this week. Message to the People is directed by Born Logic Allah.

Woods is now so well-known — particularly after Meryl Streep’s Oscar-nominated turn in the movie adaptation — that Forbidden Broadway’s delicious parody has even more bite: Into the Words. That’s because James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods has always been about words, stories and story-telling: it’s a mashup of several fairy tales tied together by the thread of a childless baker and his wife. ◀ When it comes to designers helming the world’s most revered fashion houses, shakeups are par for the course — and keeping up with who’s where feels like watching a high-stakes game of chess. After firing British wildcard John Galliano back in 2011 (based on his viral “I Love Hitler” rant in a Paris bar), the house of Christian Dior found its new leader in Raf Simons, a comparatively mildmannered Belgian designer who launched his own menswear line in 1995 and became creative director of minimalist German luxury brand Jil Sander in 2005. Using the founding father’s eponymous 1956 memoir Christian Dior & I as a guiding light, French filmmaker Frederic Tcheng’s directorial debut Dior and I zooms in on Simons just after he’s taken the reins and is struggling to uphold the house’s legacy while creating his first-ever couture collection in a matter of eight weeks. Working with a crew of seamstresses and craftsmen —

including some who’ve worked for Dior for 40-plus years — Simons ultimately rises to the occasion, infusing modern sensibilities and abstract concepts into the clothes and presenting them in a Parisian mansion quite literally covered with fresh flowers. Since the film’s 2015 release, circumstances for Simons and Dior have unsurprisingly changed. Just last year, the creative team at Dior remarkably produced a well-received collection without a creative director after Simons defected to become chief creative officer of Calvin Klein. As beloved as animated fairytale movies may be, the Disneyfication of folk tales has overwritten what are often much darker stories (looking at you, The Little Mermaid…), and in Disenchanted!, the princesses themselves have a bone to pick with their modern portrayals. Screw Horatio Alger, here’s a real American success story: Bert Kreischer spent a six-year stint as a Florida State undergraduate partying so hard that Rolling Stone — the magazine that spent the ’70s watching rockstars ride motorcycles through luxury hotels — wrote an article about him, which inspired the movie Van Wilder and also inspired Kreischer to follow his dream of becoming a stand-up comic. But lest you think he’ll just be rehashing tales of theme-parties gone wrong and pastry-humping bulldogs, Kreischer’s life seems to bear about as much

resemblance to the film as he does to Ryan Reynolds, and he’s now a 40-something father (he filmed a web-series with his daughters called How Not to Kill Your Kids). Rolling Stone worried he’d wind up selling carpets, but instead he’s hosted a travel show (Trip Flip), done coke with Hollywood suits and gotten in too deep with Russian mobsters.

As it turns out, that nomadic creature has zero to do Trebla Art Gallery, a Westside venture run by Albert Gonzales. Although it’s simply his first name spelled backwards, Gonzales admits the gallery name is designed to spark questions: “What I want people to do is to question what [Trebla means] … and wonder what kind of art would be in the space.”

ART San Antonio Museum of Art’s latest exhibition brings to light the museum’s collection of over 100 objects created by Aboriginal artists since the mid-1990s. The collection, a gift from May and Victor Lam, which includes many female artists, was born out of May’s experience (in 2000) with an exhibit of contemporary Aboriginal art called “Spirit Country,” a traveling affair put on by the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. Inspired by this exhibit, May (a longtime SAMA trustee) and her daughter journeyed to Aboriginal communities all across Australia and amassed an exquisite collection of their own. And, what a collection it is: diverse in terms of materials and themes, both ancient and current in its processes and styles. Drag Brunch: Foxxy’s Farewell SPECIAL EVENT Those familiar with San Antonio scenes spanning from burlesque and drag to knitting and poetry have probably crossed paths with Dino Foxx, a multifaceted artist and performer who — frequently as his gender-blending alter ego Foxxy Blue Orchid — has emceed more events than he’d likely care to count. Once the lone male in the award-winning troupe Stars and Garters Burlesque, Foxx has caught our attention over the years through multiple creative endeavors, including crafty antics with the yarn-bombing outfit the Yarn Dawgz and his poetry collection When the Glitter Fades — a debut publisher Kórima Press bills as

the “celebrations and mournings of a queer Xicano poet, teatrista [and] fireeater.” Far less publicized are Foxx’s admirable efforts as an activist, an aspect of his life quickly coming to the forefront. Working on a contract basis with California-based International Development Exchange (IDEX) since November of last year, Foxx is in the process of relocating to the Bay Area for a full-time position with the nonprofit, which is dedicated to promoting lasting solutions to issues related to food sovereignty, alternative economics and climate justice in the U.S., Asia, Africa and Latin America. While Foxx says he’ll continue co-producing and emceeing the San Antonio Burlesque Festival and collaborating with Austin-based burlesque/cabaret/variety collective The Midnight Menagerie (“I’ll still be back a lot,” he promised us), an array of his cohorts are uniting for a festive sendoff at Paramour. Emceed by the “glambear queen” himself, the rooftop fiesta features performances by Lucy Lips of local burlesque troupe the Pastie Pops and drag divas Kristi Waters and Nilaya Milan Mathews, music by DJ Vitamin A, and brunch fare and cocktails available for purchase. In the blog-like “Studio” portion of her website, artist Cristina Muñiz ponders one of her drawings in a post tellingly titled “Future Paintings? Maybe Not.” Often blending identifiable and non-representational objects in complex compositions inspired by personal experiences and observations, Muñiz’s small-scale sketches are, at times, studies for larger drawings or paintings. Hinting at an organic process of visual translation, Muñiz admits that “the ones that are would surprise most.”

Born and raised in San Antonio, Muñiz famously “walked away from a partially complete painting major” 20-plus years ago, got a “stable full-time job” at a retail chain and

finally returned to school to study art — this time focusing on graphic illustration and earning an associate’s degree from San Antonio College. Showing her work locally since 2011 — including group exhibits at High Wire Arts and Melinda Martinez Studio and solo shows at Mitos Gallery and Hello Studio — Muñiz eventually transferred to Kansas City Art Institute, where she furthered her studies in painting and earned her BFA in 2014.

Shortly after graduating from KCAI, Muñiz was accepted into the Charlotte Street Foundation Studio Residency Program, which provides resident artists with dedicated work space and champions Kansas City as “a dynamic

home for artists in various career stages and disciplines.” In addition to giving Muñiz a deadline-free format to develop projects that might not have come to fruition within the confines of college, Charlotte Street also opened doors via curator visits and exhibition opportunities. On the opening night of the Kansas City group show “Tungs” in 2015, Muñiz met visiting curator Joel Damon, who offered her a solo show at the Omaha, Nebraska gallery he runs with collaborator Josh Powell. Currently splitting time between her hometown and Kansas City, Muñiz says she’s found a refreshing reminder of San Antonio in the Mattie Rhodes Center, a Missouri nonprofit dedicated to “[educating] the community about Latino culture and traditions through the visual arts.” Likening the center to the bygone Melinda Martinez Studio where she met and showed with like-minded emerging artists, Muñiz says the center “feels most like home” to her. “Mattie Rhodes has that feel of a community that is inclusive of everyone but also has a strong Latino presence,” she told us. “You can feel the love with its environment and their volunteers.”

Among the first to respond to our open call for San Antonio artists who

keep sketchbooks (details below), Muñiz submitted an intriguing array of samples but was quick to point out that she defines the word “sketch” on her own terms. “Sketch to you may be different from what I say is a sketch,” she explained. “[These] are drawings in the sense that they are finished pieces … Whether they are reproduced and turned into paintings, [they] are finished.” Brought to life with anything from pens and markers to graphite and (more recently) watercolors, Muñiz’s “autobiographical” renderings combine personal memories and family narratives with impulse and instinct: “When something comes to me, I grab whatever is near and lay something down quickly.”

When the great author, essayist and public intellectual James Baldwin died in 1987, he left behind 30 pages of an unfinished manuscript that was to be titled Remember This House. The book was to be a personal account of the assassinations of his friends Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr., which occurred over the course of five years (1963-68). As Baldwin wrote to his literary agent in his book proposal, he wanted “these three lives to bang against and reveal each other, as in truth they did, and use their dreadful journey as a means of instructing the people whom they loved so much, who betrayed them, and for whom they gave their lives.” Now, 30 years after Baldwin’s death, Raoul Peck, the Haitian filmmaker of features and

documentaries, has brought Remember This House to more-than-satisfactory fruition with the film I Am Not Your Negro. The film uses the words of Baldwin’s manuscript (narrated by screen great Samuel L. Jackson in his natural voice, copying neither Baldwin’s lyrical cadences nor the fiery oratorical delivery for which the actor has become well-known) to explore the genesis and depths of America’s socalled “Negro problem.”

Peck blends an array of historical and contemporary footage, film and television clips, still photographs, written words onscreen and music with Baldwin’s words to excavate the roots of America’s self-perpetuating fantasy of itself. Baldwin’s language, always greatly admired by other writers, still comes through with its pinpoint precision,

mellifluous rhythm, and stirring undertow. An avid watcher of movies, Baldwin cites many examples of the complexity of screen identity, which are supported by Peck with film clips that delve deeply into the images of such figures as John Wayne, Doris Day, Harry Belafonte and Sidney Poitier, among others. Peck also employs a great deal of historical material from the ’60s, which document the marches, riots and political movements of the era, as well as the commonalities and differences among the three murdered leaders who are the intrinsic subject of this study.

Baldwin calls out his country’s “moral apathy,” and how it is the responsibility of witnesses to get the story out. Peck enhances the archival material with fresh images of the racial offenses shoved into public light by

the recent Black Lives Matter movement, which, despite lending I Am Not Your Negro a contemporaneous context, also permanently fixes the film in time (perhaps to its long-term detriment).

Ideas and their visual illustrations come at the viewer in a cascading torrent. The editing by Alexandra Strauss deserves its own recognition for its painstaking exactness. Never a Black Muslim or Christian, a member of NAACP or the Black Power movement, Baldwin had an acuteness of vision that was distinctly his own and never the party line. He is a writer whose work belongs on every bookshelf in America, and now with I Am Not Your Negro his words can be heard, too, on every movie screen in the land. This new essay might also be titled Even More Notes of a Native Son.

‘Q Heads are a curious lot — cultish in their devotion to certain high priests of the pit; willing to wait in a five-hour line to score the perfect, barky brisket; downright dogged in defense of one sauce over another — or disdainful of sauce altogether; devoted to mesquite or hooked on hickory and/or oak … A lot of injudicious drinking of Kool-Aid has gone on, if you ask me. It’s just smoked meat.

Or is it? San Antonio, never a barbecue beachhead, may finally have acquired a place worthy of queueing for ‘Q. On my first attempt to score some classic brisket at 2M, we arrived around 12:15 and had been in line for 10 minutes when the announcement came that it couldn’t be guaranteed there would be much of anything left by the time we breached the door. We took the hint and split. The second time, in 30-degree weather, I arrived at the opening hour of 11 to find the line mostly inside; by the time I left, it was several deep outside the door. Time No. 3, around 11:15, the line was even longer; it took me an hour from start to exit with my bag of paper-wrapped bounty. Time No. 4 (47 degrees and misty), I arrived at 20 minutes to opening on a Saturday to find about 20 people, some with folding stools, outside the closed door.

Most of the acolytes-in-waiting appeared to be ordinary folks, not wild-eyed zealots. Their budding devotion had

apparently been inspired by a local boy, Esaul Ramos, who had returned to San Antonio, still wreathed in sacred smoke, after an apprenticeship at an iconic Austin temple of clods and ribs. His mission, and that of his business partner, Joe Melig: to set us on the true path to BBQ enlightenment. Do they succeed? Yes. And no. Here’s the tally: Brisket: In a word, transformational. The bark, that essential, rugged crust, is rough and peppery; the essential layer of fat beneath bathes the tender meat in melting, mouth-coating goodness; there’s just enough smoke flavor.

Pork Ribs: No goopy glaze here — it’s mostly simple, peppery coating and beautiful, slow-cooking. The fallfrom-the-bone meat is disarmingly sweet as a result. No need for sauce.

Pulled pork: I usually find this disappointing — too soupy and often almost tasteless. But at 2M, they have figured it all out, and mixing in a bit of the crusty exterior adds flavor and texture to the whole.

Turkey breast: This is not true ‘Q if you ask me, but once you’ve spent an hour in line, might as well try everything, right? I wouldn’t go there for this alone, but it bests most other renditions hereabouts. Beautifully moist, due in part to a dunking in melted butter, it’s lightly smoky and discreetly peppery. Try the sauce with it.

Sausages: The pork sausage with jalapeño and Oaxaca

cheese is another revelation — the cheese mitigates the chile heat, and both play well with padre pork. The beef sausage, on the other hand, provides decent snap and reasonably robust flavor but otherwise offers nothing new.

Another good excuse to use the sauce, so …

Sauce: This is apparently controversial, in part because of its molasses-like sweetness and flavors such as celery seed. I like it, but just don’t find it necessary on most meats. Another version, presumably more conventional, is apparently in the works.

Sides: 2M has developed a mac and cheese with crumbled chicharron that’s a spiky sensation in taste terms and a sticky mess texturally — though it was less gluey on time two. The slaw is simple and fine; ditto the elemental red potato salad. The house-pickled cucumber slices with chili flakes that come with each order are worth the wait alone.

And now back to time four — the beef ribs: Available only on Saturdays, they are huge, dauntingly dark … and a disappointment during our visit due to a toughness of the inner lining, fat that’s less convincing than the brisket’s, and an excess of hubris in the pricing: $22 per half pound —about one rib worth, half of which is bone.

2M seems to have bumped San Antonio into the willwait-for-food world for better or for worse — guess we’ll bring our folding chairs next time.

> Stone Oak can officially claim a Dunkin Donuts/ Baskin-Robbins as of February 14. The new store, which opened at 23505 Hardy Oak Boulevard is finally open for business after a few days of trial runs.

According to Facebook, Dunkin/Baskin will offer a free medium hot or iced coffee through February 22 to celebrate the opening of the location. The store is now the fourth in the area to offer both ice cream and doughnuts in one.

Lüke San Antonio, 2010-2017

> After opening in 2010 and helping spur on a sea of change in the San Antonio culinary scene, Lüke San Antonio, celebrity chef John Besh’s first restaurant outside of New Orleans, is closing. The Door Online, the public relations firm for The John Besh Restaurant Group shared this statement from management: “After six years in business, the Besh Restaurant Group has decided to close Lüke San Antonio. Our last day of service will be February 28th. We are grateful for the ways in which the community has embraced and immensely supported the restaurant since it opened in 2011. ”[sic] The news comes after months of industry speculation following what some called a “hit job” of a review from the Express-News’ food critic Mike Sutter. In his mid-October review headlined “The Party is over for Lüke on the Riverwalk,” Sutter went on to share several experiences at the New Orleans brasserie. Here are some highlights: “From spoiled oysters to amateur service to a menu that’s overpriced and under-executed, Lüke has lost much of what made its graceful union of antebellum parlor and boozy dancehall bar so charming in the first place.”

“Ordered raw, they tasted like the inside of a basketball shoe, both spoiled and despoiled with shell fragments from the shucker’s knife. The shells of charbroiled oysters bristled with parasitic mollusks whose blackened edges flaked off when handled. This isn’t dollar oyster night at a dive bar. This is Lüke, where a half-dozen sets you back $14 to $16. There’s no excuse for that kind of sloppiness.”

“But the balance of my Lüke experience fell squarely in the languid execution zone favored by more modest hotel restaurants. An iron dish of shrimp and grits came to the table half-cool, with big flowery spices and overcooked shrimp for $27, and the modest textural contrasts and flatline flavor of a fried oyster salad with lardons and avocado didn’t support its $16 price.”

Ouch.

Chef John Russ is no longer with Lüke, having turned in a resignation mid-November of last year. He and wife Elise are working on opening an eatery of their own sometime this year.

Lüke San Antonio was first opened by executive chef Steven McHugh, who left the restaurant to open Cured in 2012. McHugh recently received a semifinalist nod in the Best Chef Southwest category for the 2017 James Beard Awards.

> The James Beard Foundation announced a list of semifinalists for the 2017 Restaurant and Chef Awards.

The list, compiled through various submissions and nominations, includes two San Antonio nods.

Making the cut in 2017 is second-year semifinalist Steven McHugh of Cured at the Pearl for Best Chef Southwest. McHugh opened Cured in 2013 with serious charcuterie boards and playful takes on South Texas flavors using hyper local ingredients. Other Texas semifinalists include Bryce Gilmore (Barley Swine, Austin), Omar Flores (Casa Rubia, Dallas), Manabu Horiuchi (Kata Robata, Houston), Anita Jaisinghani (Pondicheri, Houston), Teiichi Sakurai (Tei-An Soba

The Esquire Tavern comes in as the second semifinalist from San Antonio for Outstanding Bar Program. This is the second semifinalist nod for the bar. The first was in 2012 while under the direction of Jeret Peña. The Esquire joins Houston’s Anvil Bar & Refuge as the only other semifinalist from Texas.

Finalists will be announced March 15, and winners will be announced May 1 in Chicago during the 2017 James Beard Awards Gala, often billed as the Oscars of food.

Harnessing the same aggression as their first two releases, the dudes in SA’s garage core band, White Christ, return with a banging four track EP that’s as sophisticated as it is fun and chaotic.

Recorded and released at the end of 2016, Die So High, is loud, fast, and brimming with sun-shining spells of fuzzy guitars and, dare I say, dancey drum hits — a departure from the D-beat punchiness of their 2013 self-titled debut, as well as a further exploration of the garage rock sound featured on their first LP Rotatives.

This time around, White Christ sounds like what would be playing at the most killer party of the summer while everyone has the time of their lives. The EP gallivants in the same sort of

happy distortion of Japandroids circa 2009, yet is punctuated with a I-could-give-a-fuck-if-youlike-my-band sort of attitude reflected in the singing and lyricism of vocalist Jack Parsons.

“I just wanna die so high,” Parsons screams in the opening and title track of the EP, setting the tone for what might be the best seven minutes and forty-nine seconds of rock and roll you’ve heard in a while.

So, whether you’re bombing a hill on your skateboard, flailing your arms during a solo-jam out session in your room or just cruising around downtown with your friends, White Christ’s Die So High EP is an explosive punk rock effort that’s loud, fun and definitely worth listening to at the highest decibel you can handle.

Some people think about, talk about, and masturbate about certain fantasies without ever wanting to realize them. Let’s call them Team Fantasize.

Some people think about, etc., certain fantasies and would very much like to realize them. Let’s call them Team Realize. There’s nothing wrong with either team. But when someone on Team Fantasize is married to someone on Team Realize, well, that can be a problem. Knowing your spouse is turned on by fantasies you share but rules out realizing them — or sets impossible conditions for realizing them — can be extremely frustrating.

And sometimes a frustrated Team Realize spouse will say something like this to their Team Fantasize mate: “Talking about these fantasies together — this kind of dirty talk — it gets my hopes up about actually doing it. If it’s never going to happen, we have to stop talking about it, because it’s frustrating.”

The problem with that approach?

Swingers clubs, BDSM parties, and the strap-on-dildo sections of your finer sex-positive sex-toy stores everywhere are filled with couples who used to be on opposite teams — one from Team Fantasize, the other from Team Realize — but they’re both on Team Realize now. And what got them on the same team? Continuing to discuss and share fantasies, even at the risk of frustrating the Team Realize spouse.

So if you ever want to have that threesome or experiment with anal, HARD, you need to keep talking with your wife about these fantasies — and you need to tell her your fantasies too!
