Last week, evolution skeptics on the State Board of Education voted against updating Texas’ 9th grade biology textbook to reflect scientific fact. While the vote — which keeps language doubting evolution in Texas textbooks — is only preliminary (the final vote is scheduled for April), the move could be seen as a red flag for teacher advocates, evolution experts, and Texans who generally believe in science.

“Teachers are practically begging the board to stop forcing them to waste classroom time on junk science standards that are based mostly on the personal agendas of board members themselves, not sound science,” said Kathy Miller, president of education advocacy group Texas Freedom Network, in a prepared statement. “But these politicians just can’t seem to stop themselves from making teachers’ jobs harder.”

The board’s decision comes after a 10-member committee of educators and biology experts (formed by the board) recommended that the state pull four phrases from Texas’ 9th grade biology textbook that could leave students doubting proven science.

The phrases, creatively shrouded in jargon, ask students to “analyze and evaluate” various evolutionary processes, including the “complexity of the cell” and “proposed transitional fossils.”

Another section asks biology teachers to examine “all sides of scientific evidence...so as to encourage critical thinking by the student.”

This language falsely suggests evidence has “sides” to argue, the committee told the board, when evidence should not be interpreted as anything but fact.

These skeptical phrases were added to all high school biology books in 2009, when a citizen review board that included a few religious activists recommended their entry.

The move prompted the school board to ditch

the citizen-based committee, and instead mandate that teachers, professors, or subject area experts be prioritized when selecting future textbook review panels.

Thus, a committee of scientific experts have now made recommendations based on actual facts (replacing what some may call “alternative facts”).

But it seems the state board of education doesn’t want to hear them.

This vote comes a day after board members heard testimony from dozens of experts, advocates, professors, and students supporting a recommendation that the board update these textbooks. There were only a few opponents to the recommendation that spoke from creationist organizations.

“Creationism must be removed from the classroom,” said Tanya Estes, a former science teacher in both public and private schools.

“Religion can be used as a moral compass. It is a philosophy, but it is not science.”

Emma Dietrich, a PhD candidate in integrative biology, said that as an assistant in general biology courses at UT, she knows how critical an understanding of real science is in advancing students’ careers. Without a real belief and trust in evolutionary theory, graduates will likely be denied scholarships, important accreditations, and high-paying jobs, she said.

“Our education goals should not be based on opinion polls, but on the expertise of our teachers and experts,” urged Arturo De Lozanne, a UT Austin professor of cell biology.

The state board will cast its final vote on the recommendations in April. But with majority Republican members, science education advocates say the board will likely stick with its evolution-doubting textbook.

Or, in the words of Texas Freedom Network spokesman Dan Quinn: “Let’s just say the chances are as likely as Donald Trump not screwing anything else up.”

Even more creepy, racebaiting fliers surfaced at Texas State University last week, this time urging white men to take their country back from the “Globalist traitors [who] are destroying your race and heritage through open borders, affirmative action, and Marxist ‘political correctness.’”

The fliers, reportedly posted around the San Marcos campus by members of the white nationalist group American Vanguard, aren’t an isolated occurrence at Texas State. Other fliers were posted around campus the day after the November 8 election that gave us President Donald Trump, fliers calling for the forming of “tar & feather vigilante squads” to round up and torture “deviant” people on campus “spouting off all this Diversity Garbage.”

The fliers appeared to be the work of Trump supporters (who called themselves the “Texas State Vigilantes”), and featured the image of five guys dressed in camo and armed with shotguns and rifles.

Maybe people were just trolling the campus, but the fliers that surfaced a month later took on a more serious tone, urging the university community to report suspected undocumented immigrants to immigration enforcement officials. Whoever made the fliers tried to make them look like an official government message, including a U.S.

Department of Homeland Security seal. The fliers declared: “We are entering an era of law and order in this country. Do your part to make such a change for good.”

It even included the phone number and website where you can give tips to U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement.

The fliers come as a group of Texas State students, staff and faculty push for the school to become a “sanctuary campus” where, among other things, school officials refuse to release information on students’ immigration status and prohibit campus housing discrimination based on it.

They’ve filed a petition with the school’s president, Denise Trauth, who has flatly rejected the idea. Meanwhile, Gov. Greg Abbott has vowed to expand his legislative crackdown on “sanctuary cities” to “sanctuary schools.”

Trauth last week acknowledged the most recent “unauthorized fliers posted on campus,” saying in a tweet that school staff was looking into it. The white nationalist group that claimed responsibility for them told Austin TV station KVUE that it just wanted to “spread the word of our organization and promote our ideals.” Which is now apparently the kind of thing Texas university students are having to get used to in the post-Trump era.

Spurs Coach Greg Popovich, one of the steadiest voices in basketball, continues to guide us through these dark times. The topic last week for Coach Pop: Black History Month.

The main points of the latest Pop-ian speech, in response to a reporter’s question on the heels of the Spurs’ 102-86 win over the 76ers, seem to be that racism is still a huge problem, that this “postracial” stuff is nonsense, and the fact that our new president entered politics by baselessly accusing the first black president of being a Kenyan-born Muslim is just another sign of that.

“We’re not there yet,” Pop told reporters, before calling the country’s treatment of African Americans “our national sin.”

“It always intrigues me when people come out with, ‘I’m tired of talking about that,’ or ‘Do we have to talk about race again?’ The answer is: You’re damn right we do because it’s always there, and it’s systemic in the sense of when you talk about opportunity,” Pop told reporters.

“It’s not about, well, if you lace up your shoes and you work hard you can have the American dream. That’s a bunch of hogwash.” Pop went on to call racial inequality ‘systemic,’ and said white people were born with “a monstrous advantage educationally, economically, culturally and within the society.”

And, since this is Pop, he tied it all up at the end by again hinting at his distaste for our new commander-in-chief. “We have a president of the United States who spent four or five years disparaging and trying to illegitimize our president,” he said, before calling racial disparity “a national problem.”

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton sure has some loyal friends. Not only have the scandal-prone AG’s supporters helped bankroll his defense against felony securities fraud charges, they’ve even sued to strip funding away from the prosecutors handling his case.

And last week, they scored a significant victory when the state’s 5th Court of Appeals stepped in to block officials from paying the three prosecutors on the case, a move that could hamstring the prosecution and potentially even delay Paxton’s May 1 trial.

Last week's court order, in response to yet another lawsuit filed by Paxton donor Jeffory Blackard, came just before Collin County commissioners were set to discuss a $200,000 invoice submitted by the three Houston lawyers appointed to handle the case. (The county picked three private defense attorneys from Houston to be so-called “special prosecutors” after the local DA, a longtime friend and sometimes business associate of Paxton’s, had to recuse himself.)

When the county hired the special prosecutors, it promised a rate of $300 an hour, and as of this month they’ve billed roughly half a millions dollars for about a year’s worth of work. Blackard’s crusade, by comparison, has so far cost Collin County taxpayers more than $106,000 in attorney fees and court costs.

Blackard first tried to block payment to the prosecutors on the case in December 2015, arguing that local rules cap prosecutors’ pretrial fees at just a few thousand dollars.

While his first case was thrown out of court earlier this month,

he quickly filed a new lawsuit against the prosecutors and six county officials. As the Dallas Morning News reports, Blackard’s attorney has vowed to “continue to pursue his claim until some Texas court agrees to take it up.”

The charges against Paxton allege that he duped a state lawmaker (Corsicana Republican State Rep. Byron Cook) and another investor into dumping money into a North Texas tech company called Servergy Inc. Prosecutors claim Paxton convinced Cook and the other businessman to invest hundreds of thousands of dollars in Servergy without disclosing that he himself was being paid by the company to do so, in violation of state securities laws. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission meanwhile has also filed a civil case against Paxton.

(The SEC has also accused Servergy of lying to its investors; falsely claiming its data servers had already been sold to huge companies like Amazon and Freescale, when that wasn’t true; and of lying about the very servers it was hawking, falsely claiming they required 80 percent less cooling, energy and space than others on the market.)

Throughout his defense, Paxton’s team has worked to steer the narrative away from the actual charges against him, not just by challenging the fees paid to lawyers brought in to prosecute the case (his defense attorneys made a similar plea to strip funding from prosecutors before Blackard’s lawsuit was filed). The defense team has also claimed politics to be the driving force behind Paxton’s

legal woes — a curious theory, especially when you consider that Paxton’s criminal case ended up in his home turf, the GOP enclave of Collin County, or that it was a Republican judge who appointed the special prosecutors on the case (one of whom helped overturn former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay’s conspiracy and money-laundering convictions).

Paxton’s defense team has even gone so far as to call the Republican judge who oversaw the grand jury that indicted Paxton “vindictive,” practically accusing him of criminal misconduct in his handling of the case. Almost every judge on each appeals court that refused to toss the charges against Paxton is a Republican.

Still, in other court filings, Paxton’s team has blamed his legal troubles on GOP infighting.

Indeed, Rep. Cook, one of Paxton’s alleged victims, has been an irritant to the Paxtonloving hard-right wing of the Texas Republican party since at least the 2009 legislative session (Cook not only helped defeat Paxton’s bid for House Speaker when he was still a state representative, but he also backed Paxton’s more moderate opponent in the GOP primary for Attorney General).

Dave Feldman, the attorney representing the three special prosecutors assigned to Paxton’s case, told the AmericanStatesman that Blackard is “a rich stalking horse” for the AG, whose supporters are “trying to starve the beast.” He told the paper that the appeals court should make a final ruling on the payment issue before the end of February.

HERE’S THE SHORT STORY: When the Spaniards invaded Mexico, they brought along with them a taste for bread, which meant that they had to plant wheat. (Wheat, BTW, was also necessary for the production of communion wafers.)

The first wheat bread “came out as a tasteless lump,” according to one source. As the story goes, it took someone to start dunking the lumps in hot chocolate to make them palatable to invaders and natives alike.

When the Spanish were kicked out of Mexico in 1821, the French apparently rushed in, bringing bakers with them, and their influence — spurred by the rapid acceptance of baguettes and other breads, along with sweet pastries — had an almost immediate impact on the output of Mexican bakers who took the art and added their own touches and flourishes. It is said that there are as many as 2,000 different kinds of breads and pan dulces in Mexico today.

In between the arrival of the first French and the brief installation (1861-1867) of the Hapsburg Emperor Maximilian, there was a prior French military intervention colorfully called The Pastry Wars — which we won’t go into except to Continuted on page 17 ▶

Jenn Riesman, Pastry Chef at Hotel Emma, is raising expectations for desserts and pastry chefs in San Antonio.

Jenn Riesman Though she has worked as Hotel Emma a pastry chef for hotels and restaurants across the country, “cakes have always been my favorite things to make,” said Riesman, who hopes to someday open a cake shop of her own. “I love the reactions; when you please your clients, they realize that great [desserts] are something important for those moments and milestones.” Riesman uses fresh, local ingredients to build beautiful custom, handcrafted cakes and incredible desserts for hotel guests and outside clients.

As a Master Boulanger, Guillaume Boulard understands the importance of following classic French baking traditions and techniques.

Boulard combines his skills with simple French ingredients and fresh Guillaume products to create the Boulard bakery’s flaky croissants, La Boulangerie golden baguettes and buttery brioche. “The recipes that I use to make breads in France is the same one I make here,” said Boulard. “I always want to bring something authentic.”

Boulard attended school and apprenticed with several Master Bakers in Les Mans, France, his hometown, where he learned how the bread reacts and responds to pressure, heat and kneading.

“This is not something to learn in one day,” he said.

Boulard plans to return to France to renew his visa in March, but he hopes to be back and baking in San Antonio by Fiesta season. In the meantime, the bakery staff, including baker Parham Daghighi, will continue to create traditional loaves. Customers can expect to see more savory dishes and pop-up events at La Boulangerie this year, but don’t expect them to stray too far from their roots. Stop by the bakery for new French products, bread varieties (including a fully organic bread) and more “viennoiserie items in the cases.” @guiboulard

HERE’S THE LONGER PART: According to Sylvain Nykiel of La Boulangerie and Saveurs 209, whole French villages, spurred by the devastation of vineyards due to the phylloxera louse, emptied out and hit the seas for Mexico.

“Bread to the French is like rice for the Chinese: you have it daily or die,” said Nykiel, his French baker Guillaume Boulard nodding

in assent. But due to the effects of altitude, temperature, water, the type of wheat already planted … the French themselves had to adapt their breads to local conditions.

In time, some pastries such as the flaky palmier were adapted outright as orejas, la galette des rois (king’s cake) became the rosca de reyes, croissants begat cuernos—at least in form, and baguettes spawned bolillos and teleras. But Nykiel says in the end “everybody likes the breads they do,” so French output remained fairly traditional while Mexican bakers felt free to improvise.

The native San Antonian spent 10 years working as a chef in kitchens before he discovered bread-making through his wife, Tina, who would often bake bread for their children. “I looked at her cookbooks and started [making breads], just one recipe at a time, and found that I just really understood it. Baking became my passion,” Kent said. He soon dropped cooking altogether to create breads for local restaurants such as Cappy’s, Bliss, Lüke and Bird Bakery before opening the Bread Box — a restaurant featuring dozens of bread varieties and delicious dishes — in late 2015.

The Bread Box menu continues to serve top restaurants throughout the city, but has since expanded to offer tasty breakfast items, sandwiches, and new breads like the sourdough croissant, but Kent is sticking with signature favorites like the “Milk and Honey” English muffins, which can be enjoyed alone or as part of an entree. He credits Tina and Bread Box chef Sarah Rathbone with a great deal of the success at Breadbox. “We’re not a chef-driven restaurant, we’re a collaboration of great ideas working together.” Pick up a boule or two at Bread Box’s during their new 2017 Sunday brunch hours, 10 a.m.- 3 p.m.

The dough may hark back to brioche, but the crossed bones and other traditional shapes are puro Mexicano. A look at the pastry case at Mi Tierra or El Panifico, to mention two more, will only confirm how far the art has come.

France, of course; we have only to look at justly celebrated Bakery Lorraine or newer enterprises such as C’est la Vie. But it’s useful to investigate a bakery such as La Panaderia. The Cáceres brothers, David and Jose, are Mexican restaurateurs/bakers who first established a business in Mexico City before opening on upper Broadway. “We still call some rolls ‘French’,” says José, who works the floor at the shop.

David, the baker, emerges from the back to give a guided tour of the pastry display relating every item to its origins in French-inspired

brioche dough (most pan dulces — including their rosca de reyes) or laminated dough (flaky, jam-filled empanadas, for example). The breads are all beautiful in their welllighted trays, most exhibiting a kind of size and perfection not normally found in traditional panaderias/ pastelerias hereabouts. But David Cáceres seems most proud of his tequila-laced almond croissants — one of the few instances of an otherwise unmodified French product being cross-pollinated with a Mexican touch.

Standing in for the moretraditional Mexican bakery is Bedoy’s — “since 1961.” At the Hildebrand outlet, I had a conversation with the woman behind

Served during mid- to late summer, perhaps as an ode to campfires and fireflies, this dessert layers a cake-like graham cracker cookie, rich marshmallow buttercream, double chocolate cookie and finishes with a heavy drizzle of dreamy chocolate ganache. The Ginger Snap // Instagram certainly is the forum for sharing gorgeous photos of donuts. As Halee Edwards, a small-batch baker who cut her teeth overseas by working her way through several cookbooks and experimenting with techniques while abroad and not legally able to work (those pesky visas).

New retrospective celebrates the work of Latino artist Ángel Rodríguez-Díaz MARCO AQUINO

At the turn of the 21 century, San Antonio could boast of immensely talented artists whose bodies of work illustrated the Latino American experience. Most of these artists, however, have gone largely unrecognized by national institutions. Aside from artists César Martinez and Kathy Vargas, few had been treated to careerspanning retrospectives. In 2015, art historian Ruben C. Cordova curated a series of exhibitions across four San Antonio venues as part of a citywide Mel Casas retrospective that was meant to bring recognition to the late Chicano artist. Now Cordova will curate a retrospective at Centro de Artes celebrating artist Ángel Rodríguez-Díaz. Two accompanying exhibitions of Rodríguez-Díaz’s “early works” are on view at FL!GHT Gallery (134 Blue Star) through March 3.

For the Centro de Artes, it will mark one of the first major exhibitions to take place since the City’s Department of Arts and Culture took over the space during the summer of 2016. Once home to the Smithsonian-affiliated Museo Alameda, the venue has survived a series of controversies and revolving tenants in recent years. The upcoming RodríguezDíaz retrospective is seen as a turning point for the institution, which is “dedicated to telling the story of the Latino experience … and showcasing Latino artists and Latino-themed artworks.”

Rodríguez-Díaz, who is of Puerto Rican descent, has called San Antonio home since relocating here in 1995 to live with his partner Rolando Briseño. Briseño, who is Mexican American, is an esteemed artist in his own right. Among scholars, Rodríguez-Díaz is often considered a master portrait artist, if not one of the most important artists in the country.

Born in 1955 in San Juan, Puerto Rico, RodríguezDíaz received his BFA from the University of Puerto Rico and his MFA from Hunter College in New York City. He has exhibited his work since the 1980s and is included in several important collections including the San Antonio Museum of Art and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. In recent years, RodríguezDíaz has begun experimenting with several large-scale public artworks. In 2014, he was commissioned by the City of San Antonio to create two large sculptures resembling smoke stacks along Blanco and Basse roads. Titled The Crossroads of Enlightenment, the project honors the Mexican American workers at the former Alamo Cement plant known as “Cementville” and has become the artist’s most visible work.

But it is the artist’s portraiture which Cordova concerns himself with and which will be the focus of the retrospective. It will be the largest survey of RodríguezDíaz’s work to date, bringing together all of his well-

known pieces as well as never-before-exhibited work.

“If I were to characterize him as an artist, the really unique, singular and astonishing thing about his work is how he used his self-portraiture as a vehicle for social commentary,” Cordova said. “He makes a critique of pollution, or fossil fuels, greed, corruption and war in the genre of self-portraiture.”

While working on the show, Cordova found a large rolled-up canvas in the artist’s studio that had been nearly forgotten since 1990. Titled Mirrored Mirror, it contains a double portrait of Rodríguez-Díaz, a reference to Frida Kahlo’s 1939 painting Two Fridas.

Cordova says he realized the deep kinship RodriguezDiaz must have had with Kahlo. Where Kahlo used selfportraiture as a sort of biographical allegory borrowing from the Passion of Christ and sorrows of the Virgin, Rodriguez-Diaz’s narratives are more political. His portraiture might express the pain of losing friends to the AIDS epidemic of the 1980s. “I think it’s very clear he’s playing off of Frida Kahlo,” Cordova said.

Rodríguez-Díaz’s influences do not end with Kahlo, as the retrospective will demonstrate. Cordova explains how, after unrolling canvas after canvas, he could spot connections with other artists from the past — from Spanish master Diego Velasquez to Irish painter Francis Bacon. “What’s important to realize is that Latino artists

don’t have a Latino framework,” Cordova said. “There wasn’t much Latino art when these artists started. They were creating something self-consciously as immigrants from somewhere else or people whose families came from somewhere else, and I guess one of the big revelations for me is the connection he has with the whole history of art.” Of his affection for Bacon, Cordova explains that RodriguezDiaz wanted to create work depicting contemporary issues that had the power of the Passion of Christ. In his own work, Bacon cryptically refers to the Holocaust and genocide, essentially finding a modern counterpart to the Passion of Christ.

Cordova says he also sees parallels between Rodríguez-Díaz’s work and that of other Mexican American artists, specifically Rodríguez-Díaz’s portrayals of himself as a lucha libre figure. “He’s a cultural warrior wrestling with his own identity,” Cordova said. “What he does is really what most Chicano artists do. You wouldn’t expect that to be the work of a Puerto Rican.”

As a Puerto Rican living in San Antonio, a predominantly Mexican American community, Rodríguez-Díaz often sought to find similarities between his own culture and current environment.

In his 1998 exhibition “A Splendid Little War,” created as part of Artpace’s International Artist-in-Residence program, Rodríguez-Díaz drew parallels between the Mexican-American War and the Spanish-American War, which led to the conquest of Texas and Puerto Rico, respectively. On two large black walls, the artist drew images of both the Alamo and the USS Maine. The rallying cries for

both wars: “Remember the Alamo” and “Remember the Maine.”

Placed in between the two large drawings was a painting titled Chupacabra. Here, the artist depicts himself emerging from underneath a fallen tree, while a trio of helicopters hover above. Placed above the artist’s head is a goat’s skull. The chupacabra is originally a mythical creature from Puerto Rico known to suck the blood out of goats and various farm animals, but its legend has spread throughout South Texas and Latin America. It is the artist’s view that Latinos are often excluded from much of society and seen only as exotic creatures, much like the chupacabra.

With the Latino population steadily rising and on par to become the largest minority group in the U.S., Cordova says it is only a matter of time before major institutions around the country begin to recognize the contributions of artists such as Rodríguez-Díaz. He says that American art history is lacking if we ignore them.

Just as museums have begun to invest in African American artists, he expects the same will be true of Latino artists.

Cordova believes that the upcoming retrospective will help shine a light on the development of Rodríguez-Díaz as an artist and perhaps help bring him the recognition he deserves as one of San Antonio’s most accomplished artists.

“I think just about anybody that will walk into the show will be dazzled by his technique,” Cordova said. “The museums have really been remiss for not acknowledging him as a master. He’s a local and national treasure.”

Inveterate comic Kathleen Madigan gets what she wants

Kathleen Madigan confirms it. Donald Trump’s rise to Commander-in-Chief isn’t necessarily good for comedians. “People say, ‘That’s great for comics now that Trump is in office,’” Madigan said over the phone from St. Louis. “I don’t think it’s good for anybody that he’s in office.”

Life would’ve been very different for Madigan if she’d accepted a reporter’s gig at ESPN 2. During the summer of 1993, the Missouri native was offered a job at the then-fl edgling sports network spinoff. “I remember going to Bristol and thinking that it would be like Disney World,” she said. “It obviously wasn’t like that at all, but it was an eye-opening experience ... I love sports, but not all sports ... I just didn’t know how I would cover NASCAR or college football. I have no interest in that and can’t fake it.”

While toiling as a print journalist during the late ’80s, Madigan started doing open mic nights at local comedy clubs and found her calling. “That’s what I was meant to do,” she said. Since then, she’s developed into a sharp, unsparing comic who’s proudly “performed on nearly every stand-up television show ever made” and recorded specials for Showtime, HBO,

Comedy Central and Netflix.

Unsurprisingly, there’s nothing she enjoys more than her work. Reflecting on a cruise she took with good friend and fellow comedian Lewis Black, Madigan asks, “Why does anyone go on a cruise? You’re stuck at sea. You circle an island. I would rather fly to that island and be on it as opposed to circling it. Going on a cruise was the worst experience ever.”

Madigan, who’ll bring her “Bothering Jesus Tour” to the Empire on Friday, isn’t one of those humorists using comedy as a stepping stone to a sitcom vehicle. In fact, she was recently asked to write the pilot for Downwardly Mobile, a Roseanne Barr-John Goodman sitcom NBC eventually rejected.

“They asked me about coming aboard,” Madigan said. “I told them I can write from my garage, but I’m not writing in an office ... That obviously didn’t work out ... To me sitcoms are rabbit holes.

There may be money there. But it doesn’t often pan out. When it does, you’re chained to it. I like to do what I want.”

What Madigan wants is to make audiences laugh. “That’s all I ever wanted to do,” she said. “I can’t believe this is my job ... It’s the greatest job in the world.”

Outside events cast a long shadow over the 2017 Sundance Film Festival

Before the 2017 Sundance Film Festival kicked off on January 19, a colleague joked on Twitter that the inauguration of Donald Trump — which occurred on the fest’s first full day — would frame every wrap-up piece. In hindsight, it’s hard to imagine he’ll be proven wrong.

large and small. A march denouncing the new administration — headlined by celebrities including Chelsea Handler and Charlize Theron — took over Park City’s Main Street on Saturday, part of a series of nationwide protests. The feature documentary Trumped: Inside the Greatest Political Upset of All Time was a late addition to the programming, and several other documentary features — including An Inconvenient Sequel, Quest, Dina and Nobody Speak — seemed to have been edited at the 11th hour in order to include Trump’s ascendance. People might have gone to a remote ski town to celebrate the art of film, but they weren’t going to escape the outside world.

When attendees finally made their way into theaters — a challenge nearly all week, as a series of storms pounded Park City with several inches of snow — they saw films that often explored the volatility and uncertainty of that outside world.

Possible misconduct by law enforcement was explored from two perspectives: the Ferguson, Missouri, protests of Whose Streets? and the attempts to reform the embattled Oakland, California, police department in The Force. Other documentaries focused on environmental crises, from An Inconvenient Sequel to Chasing Coral.

Popular uprisings even made their way into feature films like the World Cinema Dramatic Grand Prize winner The Nile Hilton Incident, which effectively set a film noir mystery of institutional corruption against the backdrop of Egypt’s 2011 Tahrir Square protests.

And, as often happens with Sundance films, they also offered a window into parts of the outside world you might never have known existed. Did you know that the reindeer-herding nomadic Sami people were an oppressed minority in Sweden? You’d learn a lot about them in

Sami Blood, Amanda Kernell’s fascinating, heartbreaking drama about a Sami girl desperately trying to integrate herself into the mainstream of her society. What about the phenomenon of Japanese “idols” — mostly teen internet celebrities-cumwould-be-pop-stars — and their largely male, considerably older fanbase? Director Kyoko Miyake provided a wonderful insight into that world in Tokyo Idols, while also offering perspective on a larger Japanese culture perversely obsessed with youthful female innocence. Or perhaps it never occurred to you what unique relationship challenges might face two people in love who happen to have Asperger’s Syndrome, as we found in the sensitive, surprising U.S. Documentary Grand Prize winner Dina.

It was also inevitable — as is ever the case in a movie showcase that coincidentally overlaps with the announcement of the Academy Awards

nominations — that people would wonder if they might discover the next Manchester By the Sea, a 2016 Sundance premiere that went on to be an Oscars front-runner. Among the likelier prospects was Mudbound, director Dee Rees’ adaptation of Hillary Jordan’s novel that crafted an uncomfortably relevant story about the post-World War II friendship between two ex-GIs — one black (Jason Mitchell) and one white (Garrett Hedlund) — returning to segregated 1945 Mississippi. Better still was yet another literary adaptation — director Luca Guadagnino’s version of André Aciman’s Call Me by Your Name — which combined a coming-of-age narrative with a beautifully sensitive romance between a 17-year-old boy (sensational newcomer Timothée Chalamet) and his academic father’s summer research assistant (Armie Hammer), and gave Michael Stuhlbarg a lump-in-the-throat “fatherly wisdom” speech for the ages.

Every year, though, Sundance’s greatest appeal is the chance to discover a new filmmaker with that special something. Maggie Betts made the transition from

documentary to drama with the uniquely challenging “Catholic nuns in the 1960s” tale Novitiate. Writer/ director Cory Finley walked the razor’s edge of social satire in Thoroughbred, a dark comedy about a rich girl (Anya Taylor-Joy), her sociopathic best friend (Olivia Cooke) and thoughts of murder. Then there was the small miracle of Columbus, the feature debut of film critic Kogonada, who turned the unique modernist architecture mecca of Columbus, Indiana, into the backdrop for an unexpected friendship, featuring a stunning performance by Haley Lu Richardson and a breathtaking master class in shot composition.

The festival’s single grandest achievement, however, came from a Sundance alumnus: David Lowery, who reunited his Ain’t Them Bodies Saints stars Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara for the haunting, jawdroppingly profound meditation on mortality and attachment A Ghost Story. Perhaps there was something particularly fitting, during a festival marked by anxiety about the future, for its one true masterpiece to be about how this, like all things, shall pass.

CARNIFEX If you popped into Hot Topic between the 2008 and 2011, chances are you probably heard the screaming, break down-soaked musings of any number of deathcore bands, including San Diego’s Carnifex, that were quickly gaining popularity in the “scene." An evolution of metalcore (a genre fusing the thrashy dynamics of metal with the breakdowns and down beats of hardcore), deathcore takes it a brutal step further, harnessing the pig-squealing vocals of grind while employing non-stop chuggy breakdowns. Once legal weed shops are open, go out of your way to patronize pot shops owned by people of color and insist all legal weed shops employ people of color and pay a living wage. And once the profits start rolling in, demand that pot activists and shop owners stay in the fight to demand that people convicted of possessing or selling pot in the past — primarily POC — get full pardons and restitution.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20):

Using a blend of warfare and diplomacy, Napoleon extended French control over much of Western Europe. In 1804, he decided to formalize his growing sovereignty with a coronation ceremony. He departed from tradition, however. For many centuries, French kings had been crowned by the Pope. But on this occasion, Napoleon took the imperial crown from Pope Pius VII and placed it on his own head. Historian David J. Markham writes that he “was simply symbolizing that he was becoming emperor based on his own merits and the will of the people, not because of some religious consecration.” According to my reading of the astrological omens, Taurus, you have the right to perform a comparable gesture. Don’t wait for some authority to crown you. Crown yourself.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20): Have you heard the fable about the four blind men who come upon an elephant for the first time? The first man feels the tail and declares that the thing they’ve encountered must be a rope.

The second touches one of the elephant’s legs and says that they are in the presence of a tree. The third strokes the trunk and assumes it’s a snake. Putting his hand on a tusk, the fourth man asserts that it’s a spear.

I predict that this fable will NOT apply to you in the coming weeks, Gemini. You won’t focus on just one aspect of the whole and think it’s the whole. Other people in your sphere may get fooled by shortsightedness, but you will see the big picture.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22): For now, at least, your brain is your primary erogenous zone. I suspect it will be generating some of your sexiest thoughts ever. To be clear, not all of these erupting streams of bliss will directly involve the sweet, snaky mysteries of wrapping your physical body around another’s. Some of the erotic pleasure will come in the form of epiphanies that awaken sleeping parts of your soul. Others might arrive as revelations that chase away months’ worth of confusion.

beings upload 300 hours of videos to Youtube every minute of every day. Among that swirling flow is a hefty amount of footage devoted exclusively to the amusing behavior of cats. Researchers estimate there are now more than two million clips of feline shenanigans. Despite the stiff competition, I suspect there’s a much better chance than usual that your cat video will go viral if you upload it in the coming weeks. Why? In general, you Leos now have a sixth sense about how to get noticed. You know what you need to do to express yourself confidently and attract attention ­— not just in regards to your cats, but anything that’s important to you.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22): I know you haven’t literally been wrestling and wrangling with a sweaty angel. But if I were going to tell a fairy tale about your life lately, I’d be tempted to say this: Your rumble with the sweaty angel is not finished. In fact, the best and holiest part is still to come. But right now you have cosmic permission to take a short break and rest a while. During the lull, ratchet up your determination to learn all you can from your friendly “struggle.” Try to figure out what you’ve been missing about the true nature of the sweaty angel. Vow to become a stronger advocate for yourself and a more rigorous revealer of the wild truth.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22): Even if you’re not an occult wizard or pagan priestess, I suspect you now have the power to conjure benevolent love spells.
