Meet “Team Miller,” the growing Facebook fan club for Texas’ brashest politician

In his rise to statewide office, Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller has become the kind of brash, politically incorrect and culture war-crusading politician that’s made him a favorite among the hard right.

At the tail end of a largely forgettable, decade-long tenure in the Texas House, it was Miller who authored the state’s 24-hour sonogram law forcing doctors to force women to listen to audio of the fetal heartbeat and a detailed description of the image, a medically-unnecessary law that, as one federal judge put it, “compels physicians to advance an ideological agenda with which they may not agree.” (Some of Miller’s other major legislative accomplishments include creating special license plates for Bronze Star soldiers and legalizing the practice of hunting wild Texas hogs from helicopters.) While running for agriculture commissioner, historically a stepping stone for politicos like Rick Perry, Miller made Ted “Jailbait” Nugent his campaign treasurer and insisted on calling the Civil War the slaveryignoring “War of Northern Aggression.”

As a statewide politician, he has openly joked about dropping a nuclear bomb on “the Muslim world,” compared Syrian refugees to a pit of venomous snakes, and called Hillary Clinton a “cunt” via Twitter.

It’s the brand of politically-incorrect, fact-ignorant politics that Donald Trump, who was reportedly set to meet with Miller last week for a possible cabinet appointment, surfed into the

White House – which is probably why it’s worth paying attention to “Team Miller,” the name our state ag commissioner gives his ever growing Facebook following.

As with Trump and Twitter, Facebook seems to be a compulsion for Miller. He often posts dozens of times a day, and regularly engages with and responds to followers, critics, and critical stories via social media. He spreads “fake news,” newspeak for blatantly false bullshit, like that a group of Muslims encircled Oklahoma police while shouting “praise Allah” after attending “a press conference on beheading,” or the non-existent terrorist training camp in suburban Houston and Lady Gaga’s promise to cover her face until Trump’s impeachment (he called that one “breaking news from the land of fruits and nuts”).

“Team Miller” fixates on the kind of inconsequential, flash-in-the-pan stories you might’ve never even heard of — like how some reality TV homebuilder couple from Waco got some pushback because they attend a megachurch whose pastor openly promotes the barbaric practice of gay conversion therapy. They make fun of the “snowflake generation,” mock “safe space liberals,” and vehemently agree with Trump when he says he wants to jail people who exercise their right to burn the American flag. They say young Democrats might as well leave the state, that Mexicans “hate whitey and you better not forget it,” and that the government should jail journalists

who are, in their words, “spreading lies.” They lament and trash the lamestream media even as they share information via the New York Times and Washington Post . They consider Miller “an awesome child of God!!! ” They call the middle-of-the-road Texas Tribune the “alt-left ambassador” of Texas media. And caps lock. Lots of caps lock.

It’s that curious kind of piety that will give you a “Bible verse of the day” and call Hillary Clinton a cunt, that weird breed of social conservative that agrees (for moral, not misogynistic reasons, of course) that women who have had abortions should be “punished” but also doesn’t mind electing a man to the White House who admittedly used his power and wealth to grab women “by the pussy.” The kind of person who lambasts the wait staff because he didn’t like his steak that much.

Miller is the kind of guy who, when you write something critical about him, his response is I’ve got more friends than you. Early this month, after the Texas Tribune produced a not-at-all exhaustive list of “fake news” stories the ag commissioner spread to “Team Miller,” his reaction? “Perhaps what they really don’t like is that fact that I’ve got almost 350,000 Facebook followers while they have less than 75,000.”

Actually, Miller’s social media audience keeps on growing. As of last week, the members of “Team Miller” are north of 365,000.

South Texas inmate killed in shootout following Christmas Eve escape

An escaped inmate died in a police shootout last week, just three days after he mysteriously slipped out of a sheriff’s car transporting him to the Live Oak County Jail.

The county sheriff’s office said 36-year-old Jake Childers was killed

by Texas Department of Public Safety troopers in Campbellton, a town 50 miles south of San Antonio — and Texas Rangers are currently investigating the incident. How Childers got that far while avoiding the eye of actively searching officers — and managed to shed his heavy leg irons, acquire an arsenal of weapons, and get a new wardrobe in the meantime — is a question that’s left local law enforcement stumped.

According to Sheriff Larry Busby, Childers was returning to the jail from a doctor’s appointment when he somehow climbed out of an unlocked window in the caged backseat of a sheriff vehicle — while his hands were cuffed and legs shackled. “[The officers in the front seat] heard a noise back there...but they thought it was just him being restless,” Busby told Corpus Christi’s KRIS6 News last week. “But they drove in to the compound, and when they looked back, he was gone.”

Busby blamed the officers’ misstep on bad visibility from the metal caging and the time of day. “But they still should have checked better,” he added.

Childers’ escape came a day after he took an officer hostage (using a broken piece of plastic as a weapon) in the jail’s recreation room. Childers badly injured three officers before they wrangled him back behind bars.

After his escape, officers and a pack of hound dogs spent the entire night — Christmas Eve — trying, unsuccessfully,

to track down the inmate.

Childers had better luck. Shortly after hopping out of the car, Childers, still in shackles, ran across an acquaintance working on his truck, and asked him to borrow his phone. The man refused, but abandoned his unlocked truck, telling Childers he was going to “find a phone” (Busby said the man was looking for an excuse to get away from the inmate).

Still, the acquaintance had conveniently left bolt cutters, a kitchen knife, overalls, and a hat inside his truck. When the guy returned, he found Childers’ broken handcuffs on the ground.

Next, Busby said, Childers stole four shotguns and three handguns from a nearby hunting camp. Then he headed to his own house.

It seemed the officers were always 15 minutes or so behind Childers — in some cases, almost comically missing him. Despite the fact that many officers were watching Childers’ house the evening of his escape, he somehow managed to open the front gate, go inside, and take a shower that evening without their knowledge.

Officers even hopped in a helicopter to try to locate Childers, who was initially arrested for illegally fishing on private property. Busby said he had a history of escaping county jails — and was a member of the Aryan Brotherhood.

“He’s hard to describe,” Busby said, prior to his death. “He’s just determined not to return to prison.”

According to KRIS6, a combination of K-9 units, helicopters, and on-foot officers finally found Childers hiding in thick brush near Campbellton around 9 p.m. Tuesday. Childers reportedly shot at the SWAT team with a revolver, prompting the officers to fire back, killing the former inmate.

SPOILER ALERT Medina’s making the mayor’s race sound an awful lot like a Democratic primary

Manuel Medina might say he’s still weighing whether to run for San Antonio mayor, but he talks about his presence in the race with near certainty. He’s already pledged a quarter million of his own dollars to the effort, held a big, public event earlier this month naming his campaign treasurer, and when he dishes public transportation policy, which he clearly wants to be his marquee issue, the Bexar County Democratic Party chairman says things like, “I want Manuel Medina to be considered the transportation mayor.”

And, even though he hasn’t “officially” announced his run (he promises that final decision could come as soon as this week), it’s clear who Medina considers his main competition at this point: District 8 Councilman Ron Nirenberg, who earlier this month became Mayor Ivy Taylor’s first official challenger.

That’s because Medina and Nirenberg will be likely be scrapping for the same slice of the electorate — the progressive, liberal and Democrat-leaning voters who fit squarely in the anti-Taylor camp. Both say they care about ethics reform at city hall, want greater transparency, and are either overtly critical or deeply skeptical of the city’s near-billion-dollar Vista Ridge water pipeline project. Both lament that a largely working-class city the size of San Antonio has such a crummy public transportation system. Each delivers similarly fiery (if not vague) denouncements of the special interests guiding development and public policy at city hall.

To be fair, Medina is quick to say “this isn’t a partisan election” (which, is technically true; mayoral candidates don’t run with party affiliation). He just quickly follows it up with a barrage of plainly partisan political appeals. “The truth of the matter is Ivy Taylor has aligned herself with the far right of San Antonio, and Ron Nirenberg has never voted in a Democratic primary in his life,” he told us. So much for nonpartisan.

Many have already pointed out the spoiler effect Medina could have on the race, potentially leading to a repeat of the last mayoral election when two former Democrat state lawmakers jumped in, split the anti-Taylor vote, and triggered a runoff that Taylor ultimately won.

Medina’s response? “Everyone should stop drinking the Kool-Aid.” He insists Nirenberg’s support among progressives and liberals is overblown, and that he could lock in and turn out the vote in the Democratic strongholds of the west and south sides. “There’s only one Democrat in this race, only one true progressive and that’s why from day one Manuel Medina has been considered a serious candidate,” he says. (Medina likes to refer to himself in the third person – a lot.)

“At the end of the day, Ron’s a centrist,” Medina says. “Why pick a centrist who’s going to be forced to carry your progressive values when there is one who has been the champion of those public values for years?” Sounds an awful lot like a pre-runoff primary in a supposedly nonpartisan race.

Formed just this year, with an all-girl lineup, most of whom play in other rad local bands too, Topo Chica has a sound that is, on the surface at least, just as bubbly as its namesake. The five-piece’s lo-fi, dream-punk vibe, as revealed on the single “Leonardo,” the group’s first and (so far) only release, is bright and confident in a refreshing and endearing way.

With an increasing live presence around town, and a series of indications that the chicas spent the end of 2016 doing some recording, Topo Chica seems poised to develop into one of SA’s most interesting bands this year.

SA bubble-punk duo Baby Bangs may be a side project times two — singersongwriter Elena Lopez’ main band is the indie rock band Octahedron and drummer Dane Rousey holds it down in experimental rock act The Freebiez — but there’s nothing about the new band that feels extraneous. If anything, Baby Bangs’ quickly developed chemistry gains in whimsy and insight where it cedes pressure to more established other projects.

The two-piece dropped its first EP, huh?, in 2016 and is already at work on more music. Meanwhile, the flippant immediacy and wistful emotiveness of huh? made it one of our favorite releases of last year.

The Freebiez are all over the place. And, we’re at least almost 100 percent positive that this is a good thing. When we tell you that the young two-piece (sometimes three) has a sound that ranges from doom-folk meanderings to goof rock noodling, from straight up noise worship to garage rock, from wild experimental rock to pretty (if depressive) lo-fi pop — we are not kidding, and we’re also just talking about one LP: December’s rad Nervous McGervous.

Following up the excellent Two EP, released in February 2016, The Freebiez dropped the awesomely-titled Nervous McGervous and promptly hit the road to spread its strange and dark gospel. Watch for more unholy badassery from these guys in 2017, and get yourself to one of The Freebiez's punishing live shows with the quickness.

To be sure, this list could have easily been at least twice as long, in a city so packed with diverse talent.

But, as it stands, we're pretty proud to submit this list of worthy artists, as a fine (at least initial) representation of the best of what San Antonio music has to offer.

Seven years into its existence as a band, We Leave at Midnight (WLAM) has been one of the most inventive bands in San Antonio for a minute now. While the group, led by mad pop genius and tempo change enthusiast John Dailey, hasn’t gigged with much frequency of late, WLAM celebrated the triumphant release of its second LP back in December. The LP, The Holy Rolling Flower Band, demonstrates marked growth for the group’s gently psychedelic, endlessly inventive, and complex sound. You’ll want to be on the lookout for a chance to hear WLAM play this thing live in the new year.

One of the most fun bands in town to catch live, Islands & Tigers serves up some seriously catchy and gnarly grunge pop, with a punk attitude and an occasionally melodramatic flair. Last year's superb, self-titled release collected the best songs from a number of EPs that the young band has already put out (since forming in 2012).

While the album perfectly highlights the band’s great potential, high energy, and lead man Bobby Rivas’ knack for writing engaging and memorable songs, it also acts as a sort of summation of Islands & Tigers work to date, clearing the way for new stuff in the new year.

While White Elefant — the local indie rock four-piece led by singer-songwriter Josh Mathis — had a quiet 2016, due to an unplanned hiatus resulting from essentially losing bassist Cass Grady to more pressing demands, we can expect that to change in 2017. The sharp and consistently interesting indie post-grunge group has found a new bassist in The Rosedale Highs’ Dustin Olinick. Mathis told the Current that the band will be playing more shows soon and is even (slowly) back at work on new material to follow up 2014’s understated gem of an LP Nights & Weekends.

High octane spirit-rock duo Lonely Horse has had a bumpy yet charmed ride. In the last three years, the band has released two staggeringly good LPs (and one EP) of its bluesy, fiery, and propulsive brand of garage rock and rocked a slew of off-the-hinges shows. Lonely Horse has also recorded at Sonic Ranch Studios in West Texas, been courted by major labels, been fucked over by a glad-handing industry would-be or two, and generally held it together miraculously in the face of disappointment and unplanned restarts. This year will see the band free of previous obligations and back to focusing on continuing to perfect its singular sound.

The Grasshopper Lies Heavy (TGLH) is an experimental metal band for people who don’t like metal. But, TGLH, perhaps the loudest band in town, is also for metal lovers, so don’t get it twisted. Essentially the brainchild of multi-instrumentalist and songwriter/composer James Woodard, the band makes droning, ambient and artful sludge that brandishes raw power and surprising subtlety at once.

TGLH’s last release was in 2014, the group’s masterful sophomore album All Sadness, Grinning into Flow, but, in addition to touring nationally, the band plays local shows regularly. Woodard told the Current that 2017 will see a few split releases, plus some other goodies, from the group.

Alright, alright... We know damn well that San Antonio singer-songwriter, composer, and multi-instrumentalist Marcus Rubio—who is currently recording and performing (sometimes accompanied) as More Eaze — lives in Austin now. He moved there a couple years back, after finishing up a Master’s Degree in Music Composition at California Institute of the Arts.

But, Rubio still performs here frequently and works with a variety of local organizations and artists, so we think its fair for us to go on claiming the insanely prolific artist, who works in styles as seemingly disparate as long-form drone, folk-pop, orchestral indie rock, deconstructed R&B, experimental electronic, and sound collage, just to name a few. He released no less than three odd, lingering and excellent albums in 2016, and 2017 is already looking even busier for Rubio, who mentioned to the Current that as many as nine new releases may see daylight this year.

If you were paying attention to San Antonio music from the midaughts onward, chances are you took note of Chris Maddin. The lead singer and principal songwriter in the now-defunct cinematic indie-rock band Blowing Trees, who has also released one excellent solo album ( The Tiago Splitters ) and two albums of solid electro-singer-songwriter stuff (as FILMSTRIPS), Maddin’s knack for writing memorable, inventive, and deceptively simple songs, his electric stage charisma, and his huge honey-hued voice set him apart from many of his peers. After a few years of relative inactivity, Maddin will return with a solo album (called Sterequiem ) in 2017.

Alyson Alonzo, who helms the illusive, big soul band Sugar Skulls and works solo on some next level R&B shit, is one of the biggest talents in town. Her voice alone, with its range, power, warmth and tremendous gift for movement, would be argument enough to prove this statement true.

But, Alonzo’s winning persona, brash and vulnerable all at once, and the way it shines through in her songwriting and her performance presence, is also a part of what makes her great.

Updates on new music are few and far between, though Alonzo performs fairly often and has made reference to solo and Sugar Skulls recording sessions.

So, we’ll just have to wait and see and be content to catch her at Youth Orchestra of San Antonio’s sure-to-be-awesome Purple Rain Live show (March 13 at The Tobin Center).

Third Root

Look: Third Root is the best hip-hop act in San Anto. Pure and simple. Rappers Easy Lee and Mexican Stepgrandfather (who’s also an Associate Professor at the University of Texas at San Antonio) ride gritty and world music-infused beats from DJ Chicken George with a hip-hop alacrity and message-centered tenacity that puts them in a category of their own. The group’s finest work Libertad, released in October 2016, is a great distillation of Third Root’s sound, politics and penchant for making good music at the intersection of the two. The year ahead should see more live shows from the woke trio, which means more chances to witness just how powerful real hip-hop can be.

Mockingbird Express is the far-out, throwback psych-rock project from longtime SA musician and champion of psychedelia Marc Smith. The three piece has already built up something of a buzz around itself for its unhinged and trance-inducing live shows, full to bursting with musical invention and the wild magic of improvisation. Now, with work on its debut album coming to a close, the group has slowly started to reveal what its recorded incarnation will sound like. And, it is glorious, indulgent, sticky, garage-psych with spiritual tones and vibrations culled from the eternal frequency. Be on the look out for the full record in 2017.

Volcán is a young, contemporary, indie orquesta Latina, comprised of 13 members all rallying around dazzling lead singer Jose Huizar and principal songwriter Jaime Mejia. The group’s sound is kinetic as hell, combining elements of cumbia, Latin pop, jazzy big brass, Chicano rock, and indie rock for an arresting amalgamation that works far better than it seems like it might. While the group’s sizzling debut EP, Ritmo, Cultura y Amor, will delight you, our recommendation is that you catch Volcán live, when the band’s brilliance is on full display, if you’re looking to become an instant devotee.

Experimental-electro/shamanwave act Something Fiction, led by producer/songwriter Matt Humble, has forged a truly unique and ever-blossoming sound for itself, over the course of a few EPs and two singles. The somewhat hermetic group has been busy of late running Timewheel, the label they founded, and laying the groundwork for an exciting 2017. Riot grrrl revivalist crew and Chicana power punk posse Fea, helmed by Girl in a Coma members Phanie Diaz and Jenn Alva, released its scorching debut last summer, to wide acclaim. Naturally, the group’s sound immediately caught hold in San Antonio, since the music seems to have the city in its very DNA, but the four-piece, who has already been touring nationally, has also won over fans and music critics around the country. Fea’s song “Tragedias” was even named a Top Song of 2016 by NPR. With Girl in a Coma still waiting in the wings while band leader Nina Diaz tours her rad solo album, expect more chances to catch Fea and maybe even more new music in 2017.

You don’t have to be stoned at all to enjoy the party-punk/grunge-pop stylings of young SA band Junkie — but we’d imagine it certainly wouldn’t hurt. The group has released quite a smattering of instantly enjoyable music in a pretty short time, culminating with 2016’s W/E, the band’s most fully realized effort, and there’s no indication the guys will be hitting the brakes anytime soon. In fact, Junkie has already announced plans to released a new LP, entitled FELIZ, this spring. Just try to keep up. And, nevermind all that talk about how weed kills your productivity.

There’s a remarkable balancing act that happens in the music of noise-punk outfit Filthy, one of the best new SA bands to emerge over the last few years. While there’s an unsettling and jarring aspect to the band’s tunes, there’s also an almost pretty and beautifully eerie pop element to them. This balancing act makes for music that maintains a kind of taut raptness from the listener, who rightly expects that, especially in the live setting, anything could happen around the next corner. Check out 2016’s excellent, if criminally brief, Cure It EP and make it your business to follow Filthy this year.

And, in the type of political and social climate we are living in these days, it’s easy to see why people might be thirsty for aggressive music with powerful cultural touchstones and progressive rage aplenty. The band hasn’t released any new albums since 2013’s star-making El Valiente, but, with the national spotlight on, as PP continues its tour with extreme metal favorite Brujeria, the time is certainly ripe to be hearing a lot more from Del Norte and company.

Wayne Holtz is out there. And, we mean that both as an expression of his truly individual and over the top sense of style and his uncanny penchant for literally seeming to be everywhere in 2016. As a social gadfly and style icon, Holtz is pure, unmatched fabulousness. As it turns out, he’s also a delightful songwriter and performer, with a sugary and doomy 1980s sound to his high-drama songs. ▶ Beyond offering early exposure to the steady stream of students emerging from UTSA’s department of art and art history, the university’s offsite Terminal 136 occasionally showcases the work of faculty members — some of whom are nationally (and even internationally) recognized artists. Kicking off its 2017 programming on a promising note, the Blue Star outpost’s two-man THU-FRI show “Locations” pairs assistant professors Buster Graybill and Humberto Saenz. Employing sculpture, installation, video and photography as “an all-terrain vehicle to traverse the rural landscape and reconnect with often-overlooked places,” Graybill made a splash back in 2010 with his Artpace exhibition “Tush Hog” (which involved sculptural hog feeders that were released on a ranch and monitored with infrared cameras) and recently took over Sala Diaz with a solo show exploring “the conceptual potential of objects and materials often tucked away in garages, found on the shelves of sporting goods stores or loaded on the bed of a truck for a weekend vacation.”

A widely exhibited artist specializing in printmaking, Saenz creates work designed to “empower the viewer with knowledge about immigration issues which have affected and segregated Mexican immigrant communities.” Often addressing contemporary immigrant issues, the objectification of minorities and the appropriation of mythological stories, his prints have depicted reimagined pre-Columbian themes and scenes, along with the “piñatafication” of familiar figures. Since the mid-1980s, Cobb has notched over 25 solo exhibitions and experimented wildly, with a creative abandon and pesky curiosity that makes him truly magnetic, in the realms of painting, drawing, digital media and music. His restlessness is an abundant and odd territory of generous fertility — whereas, for so many, restlessness just leads around in circles. For his new exhibit at FL!GHT, which collects work from the

◀ Mad caricaturist extraordinaire Mort Drucker famously captured the essence of his subjects by focusing as much on details like their posture, hands, the spaces between their eyebrows, etc., as he did their facial features. That eye for minutiae was what differentiated his classic movie parody illustrations from street-fair souvenirs. And so it is with Mad TV alum Pablo Francisco, whose best-known bit as a stand-up comic is an impression of the movie-preview guy, a voice so popular with comics that odds are good it’s being imitated at an open mic somewhere while you’re reading this sentence. Francisco might be the only comic, however, to take the voice out of the context of a movie preview and put it into daily life, vividly illustrating its ridiculousness in a high-energy vivisection. Guillermo Kahlo lamented “an elephant married a dove” after the 1929 wedding of his 20-something daughter, Frida, to the famous Mexican artist and womanizer Diego Rivera, almost twice her age. But he also warned the groom that she was “un demonio,” a devil.

“Tempestuous” is a barely adequate description of their rocky relationship marked by separations, divorce, remarriage and a celebrity life in the world’s spotlight long before reality TV. Rivera had many affairs, including Frida’s younger sister and Hollywood star Paulette Goddard, while she responded with affairs of her own, including the Communist leader Leon Trotsky and numerous women. To a friend, Frida admitted, “I have suffered two serious accidents in my life, one in which a streetcar ran over me … The other accident is Diego.”

Icons, legends and role models for generations of politically active artists, “Diego y Frida: A Smile in the Middle of the Way” spans the lives of Mexico’s best-known aesthetic provocateurs through the eyes of family, friends, admirers and photojournalists. The nearly 100 black-andwhite photographs are on view through January 29 at the Mexican Cultural Institute in Hemisfair.

A German Jew of Hungarian descent, Frida’s father, a professional photographer, married a part-Indian and devoutCatholic Mexican woman. He took Frida’s portrait as a young girl in a frilly dress. Shortly before her birth in Coyoacán outside Mexico City, he built the family home, Casa Azul, which serves as the backdrop for many of the photographs.

It’s now the Museo Casa Estudio Diego Rivera y Frida Kahlo, where this exhibit originated in 2002.

Her right leg shriveled by polio when she was six, Frida was in a bus/ streetcar accident when she was 18 that caused her pain for the rest of her life. The nationalism of the Mexican Revolution inspired her to wear native Mexican costumes, but even after it became unfashionable, she continued to wear the long, flowing dresses to hide her thin leg and orthopedic shoe. Beginning with their wedding day portrait by Ernesto Reyes, the press obviously loved the dramatic image she created — a dark, slender beauty in exotic Mexican dresses and elaborate jewelry standing next to her towering husband in rumpled suit and broad-brimmed hat.

In photos from the early 1920s taken by Enrique Díaz and Augustín Victor Casaola, the couple leads protest marches on behalf of the Union of Revolutionary Sculptors, Painters and Engravers. And in her last public appearance on July 2, 1954, a pale, sickly Frida participated in a rally protesting the United States’ intervention in the overthrow of Guatemala’s leftist president. Beside

the Mexican artist Juan O’Gorman, Frida sits in her wheelchair and holds a placard declaring, “Por la paz,” for peace.

On her first trip out of Mexico in 1930, Frida accompanied Diego to San Francisco, where he was commissioned to paint two murals at the Pacific Stock Exchange Luncheon Club and the California School of Fine Arts (now the San Francisco Art Institute).

Edward Weston and Ansel Adams were among the famous American photographers enraptured by the famous couple. There’s also a shot of the pair taken two days after Diego’s mural for the Rockefeller Center in New York was yanked because it included a portrait of Lenin.

The most beautiful portraits of Frida were taken by one of her lovers, Nickolas Muray, a well-known Hungarian photographer. After breaking off their affair, he wrote, “Of the three of us there was only two of you. I always felt that. Your tears told me that when you heard his voice.

The one of me is eternally grateful for the happiness that the half of you so generously gave.”

In the past 12 months, we’ve seen two memorable movie monsters. The first, the Big Friendly Giant (The BFG), lives up to his name.

If you can look past his grotesque features and uncouth fellow fee-fi-fo-fummers, he’s a big sweetie.

The same can’t be said for the eponymous star of A Monster Calls.

No, this is a giant straight out of a child’s nightmares, carrying an adult-oriented message. Voiced by Liam Neeson, this CGI monster has come to visit 13-yearold Conor O’Malley not to comfort or provide escapist amusement, but to both challenge him and help him overcome the perceived monster inside himself. He’s also come to heal, which is appropriate considering he’s birthed from the branches of a sacred yew tree.

Conor – “too old to be a kid [and] too young to be a man” – is struggling to cope with the serious illness of his mother (Felicity Jones). He doesn’t get much emotional support from his largely absent father (Toby Kebbell), and he detests his grandmother (Sigourney Weaver). So it’s not surprising that this emotionally frustrated yet visually creative English lad concocts

a fantastical character. Or perhaps it’s not so much immense talent, especially in his use of imagery and concoction as mystical intervention. art direction, compared to Weaver, who is miscast.

Director J.A. Bayona has dealt with loss and grief Lacking the requisite English air and vocal pattern in mother-son relationships before, in The Orphanage (though her basic sounds are OK), she is also and The Impossible. I don’t want to bury the lede: I really like Max & Louie’s.

But if you indulge me in a bit of selfexploration, I want to try and get to the bottom of why. Maybe it’s my fascination with New York City as this glitzy, whirlwind place. Maybe I’m into crowded eateries that boast stacks of meats sandwiched between slices of rye. Maybe it’s my love of Norah Ephron’s When Harry Met Sally and my secret desire to recreate that diner scene one day. Maybe it’s about damn time San Antonio finally received a diner for food lovers that want legit pastrami and lox. Maybe, as NYC’s Carnegie Deli closes this month after 80 years of business, I’m just looking for comforting, reassuring nostalgia.

Maybe it’s just plain good.

Opened by native New Yorker, Drew Glick and business partner Ron Acosta of Las Palapas fame, Max & Louie’s is a homage to east coast diner traditions. North side foodies might recognize Glick from his previous effort, Drew’s American Grill inside the former Brasserie Pavil. Unlike that spot, which seems to be cursed for restaurants that continuously try to open and end up ultimately failing, Max & Louie’s has charm and staying power.

Styled as a tried and true diner, Max & Louie’s holds a sprawling, but tight dining room, with tables, booths and counter seating. There’s a smattering of neon, with namesakes Louie Glick and Max Braverman (Glick’s paternal grandfather and great uncle, respectively) commanding attention from their yellow cartoony perch. Both were businessmen, Glick was a butcher, and through this eatery, Glick (the grandson) is paying his respects to traditions past.

My objective during my first visit a few weeks after their opening was getting my hands on a bagel and lox platter, which meant combing through an overwhelmingly long menu. Still, was I trying to recreate a breakfast at Russ

& Daughter’s? Yes, obviously. And the smoked salmon delivered (Glick ships it in from Brooklyn daily). My friend ordered the fluffy challah French toast (arguably the only bread that should be used for this breakfast classic) and we happily noshed on a black and white cookie (a NYC staple) on the drive back to the office.

Later visits had more of the same. Be prepared for a wait during lunchtime, as north siders have understandably taken a liking to this joint.

For this lunch, I ordered the Matzo ball soup and was pleasantly surprised with the offering. A large, soft Matzo ball took up most of the bowl the delicate broth contained the perfect amount of large-chop onions, tender — not mushy — carrots and celery, along with roasted chicken. I’ll definitely be back for that.

And my Reuben brought back memories of yes, Carnegie Deli, but also Drew’s American Grill in its heyday. Here’s a sizable tower of hot pastrami, bright sauerkraut, Swiss and Thousand Island dressing all snuggled into fresh rye that can hold its own and not leave you with a delicious mess.

The cheese blintzes (or farmer and cottage cheese-stuffed and folded crepes), though a bit sweeter than I’m used to, kept my sweet tooth sated. I didn’t reach for another black and white cookie. Maybe next time. I should also note, the back of Glick’s head was the only glimpse I caught of the co-owner, as he spent the entire lunch hour expediting plates from the kitchen window.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention breakfast, served 7:30 to 11 a.m. The French toast is a must, though you should ask for crispier potatoes in the hash and eggs (which comes with corned beef and pastrami). Spring for the Brooklyn egg cream milkshake with milk, carbonated water, chocolate syrup — no eggs or cream are actually used — and let that 1800s NYC feel settle in.

Tacoart Has Closed Its Doors

> With just five weeks under its belt, Tacoart has closed its doors. The restaurant concept launched by owner Adriana Llano in place of Urban Taco (which she brought to San Antonio) first opened its doors on November 19 at the The Quarry Village.

In a letter to customers released on Monday, December 26, Llano briefly explained the sudden closing as having “fallen short of [their] projections.”

Having stopped by for the soft opening, I had only one more visit to Tacoart before this closing. Regardless of the conditions for their closing, the food was good and will be missed by those who had a chance to try it. The pila blanca taco with poblano peppers, Oaxaca cheese, corn and pepitas was an early favorite of mine I’ll have to recreate at home.

> Taco Palenque, which opened a second location in late August, has added a mobile kitchen to help keep its foothold in SA. Originally from Laredo, Texas, the fast-casual Mexican eatery is known for its tacos piratas, caseros, Matamoros or al pastor as well as its fideo and chip and salsa bar. The truck will park outside of Palenque

Grill’s (also under the Taco Palenque umbrella) original location at 389 N. Loop 1604 W. The truck will carry a similar menu as its brick-andmortar counterparts, and will also include a new Guerita taco, which combines a quesadilla with al pastor meat.

The truck will 5 to 11 p.m. Sunday through Wednesday and 5 p.m. to 3 a.m. Thursday through Saturday. The truck’s regular hours will run 5 p.m. to 3 a.m. daily.

Trinity’s Saturday Farmers Market Is Being Discontinued

> In a message posted to their Facebook page, the Trinity Farmers Market announced it is now discontinued.

The market, which was first announced in early 2016 was made possible through a grant that is now completed, per the announcement. Though relatively lowkey especially when compared with its Pearl counterpart, the market had a variety of vendors and producers from around the area. Where else could you find Ethiopian food and rice pudding bowls at the same spot?

The university shared the following in its message.

“The Trinity Market team has now decided to turn its attention inward to the Trinity community to pursue its mission and discontinue the market.

The Saturday component was funded by a USDA grant and is now completed. Throughout the year, we’ve

established great partnerships with vendors and the community - we are proud of each of their contributions to the Saturday market days and are looking forward to seeing what the future holds as we turn our efforts to the Trinity internal community.”

Rise Up Açaí, owned by John Farnel, is now operating out of a brick-and-mortar location in Alamo Heights.

The new 3,200-square-foot space will allow Farnel and his team to whip up more bowls, cold-pressed juices, and soon coffee (Rise Up will carry Merit Roasting Co. beans) along with food items by Pharm Table and graband-go breakfast options such as vegan kolaches.

Hours will remain the same as before (8 a.m.-6 p.m.

Monday-Friday and 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday) through New Year’s Eve, but Farnel is hoping to launch earlier morning and later evening hours in the new year.

With more cocktail bars than ever, San Antonio’s penchant for things shaken and stirred is still going strong. To celebrate that ongoing love affair, this year’s San Antonio Cocktail Conference is making some changes to its signature lineup.

For those unfamiliar with the SACC, here’s a quick catch-up: Hosted by Houston Street Charities helmed by executive director Cathy Siegel, downtown SA is flooded with all manners of cocktails for the better part of a week. Paired dinners feature spirit brand representatives combining forces with restaurants such as Lüke San Antonio, Chisme, Botika, Rebelle and The Well, while spirit-fueled parties, such as meat fest at Two Bros. BBQ Market's Bourbon and Barbecue (Tuesday), Opening Night and Waldorf on the Prairie are hosted throughout the city. But changes are afoot, and here’s what to expect. Women Shaking It Up: Though technically a part of last year’s lineup, this year’s female-centric soiree will ditch the film aspect for a night of cookie-inspired pairings. Heather Nañez (Bohanan’s), Brooke Smith (Esquire Tavern), Lisa Astorga (Bite), Diana Barrios Treviño (Los Barrios), Laura Loomis (Jason Dady Restaurant Group) and Cariño Cortez (Viva Villa) are pairing dishes with desserts inspired by your favorite Girl Scout cookies such as Do-Si-Dos, Savannah Smiles, Thin Mints, Samoas, Trefoils and Tag-Alongs. $65, 7:30-10:30pm, January 11,Plaza Juarez at La Villita.

Regarding Cocktails: In 2015, the cocktail world lost a visionary with the passing of SACC’s co-founder Sasha Petraske. This year, before the traditional daiquiri toast to the late barman, beverage enthusiasts and pros alike will get a chance to meet his widow Georgette MogerPetraske, who published Regarding Cocktails, a definitive guide to her husband’s repertoire, this October. Books will be available for purchase at Bohanan’s Bar. Admission is free, 2-4pm, January 12, Bohanan’s Bar. Opening Night: Ben Stiller probably won’t make a cameo as hundreds of San Antonio adults tap into their

inner kid at Opening Night’s new venue. After being held at the Majestic Theater for at least three years, the opening festivities will be held inside the DoSeum.

Those familiar with the ReDo Recess, the venue’s adult-only evening, can expect more of the same — an air of whimsy (stilt walkers and balloon artists were mentioned) with dozens of cocktails to sample. $85, 7:30-10:30pm, January 12, The DoSeum.

In that spirit, 2017 will likely be even more chock full of commemorative/ tribute shows and rock vigils for the array of dearly departed talent. If the band’s music has always also been adorned with a youthful punk fervor (or naivete), that’s just been another part of the charm of watching Rivas grow through music.
