Speakers: Shirley Jackson Director, Centre for New Industry Michael Watson ETU Political OfficerStar of the South 2.2GW Offshore Wind Farm will be located off the south coast of Gippsland in Victoria.
If developed to its full potential, Star of the South would generate up to 2.2GW of new capacity, powering around 1.2 million homes across the State.
Star of the South will have around 200 offshore turbines, multiple offshore substations, and transmission infrastructure connecting to existing infrastructure in the Latrobe Valley.
Offshore wind would complement other forms of electricity generation to create a more reliable system
and deliver lower power prices. We have an exploration licence from the Australian Government to undertake site investigations off the coast of Gippsland.
It typically takes 6-10 years to develop and build an offshore wind project.
Projects like Star of the South will provide clean green electricity for homes, and drive the revival of Victorian manufacturing.
For ETU members, Star of the South will provide a pipeline of jobs through construction, transmission and long-term maintenance.
2022 saw the Branch mandating a one-day Professional Development session for all electrical apprentices in industrial agreements. As well as an introduction to the Union, the day covers important community issues such as drug and alcohol awareness, domestic violence education, and suicide prevention awareness. Our apprentices are the Union’s future..
With the Victorian ETU having a record membership, predominantly male, 2021 saw the introduction of the WAVE program and the Introduction to Women in the Electrical Industry Day. Both initiatives are driven by the Branch to give great opportunities to females wanting a career in the electrical industry.
2022 sees Ivan Balta, the branch’s assistant Secretary, heading up our newinfrastructure division. With projectssuch as the Metro Tunnel Project, AirportRail Link, Westgate tunnel, North-EastLink Program and the Suburban Rail LOOP– WORTH BILLIONS OF DOLLARS. THIS WILLessentially create over 5,000 new electricaljobs, making this the growth division of the ETU.
Experienced official Matt Boyd hasbeen elevated to lead organiser inpower, with the responsibility oflooking after wages and conditionsand delivering agreements for our2,400 power members.
2021 saw our head of contracting Chris Patterson negotiate and complete the 20222025 contracting EBA, followed by the commencement of the individual company sign up meetings - which to date sees over 6,000 ETU contracting members attend the offices to vote on and receive the increases they deserve.
Troy Knight organises the Western districts being our largest and most diverse patch with over 1500 members in 14 different industries. Whilst the challenges can be enormous, this area is seen by many to be the stronghold of the Victorian ETU.

This year, the ETU launched its Adept Workforce for the Zero Emission Vehicles (ZEV) Boom Project, supported by a $950K grant from the Victorian State Government’s Workforce Training Innovation Fund.
Through the Centre for U, the ETU will design and pilot accredited training to upskill electricians to support the transition of the vehicle fleet to zero emissions.
The course will ensure that electricians have the skills and knowledge to install charging equipment safely.
ETU is very proud to be part of the evolution of, and provision of, Australia’s first accredited EV Charging Infrastructure course that will upskill 500 licensed electricians in its pilot phase. The course will be rolled out in 2023 and will be available through the Centre for U - home of the ETU and Holmesglen TAFE.
ith record membership and compulsory CPD and Apprentice Days, together with industrial EBA meetings and training, the Victorian ETU will see over 8,000 electrical workers accessing our Melbourne and regional offices on a yearly basis. To cater for this unprecedented growth and demand, the Branch has committed to major redevelopments of our Melbourne and regional offices..
.
