EAST TO WEST 2017 A collection of works in the exploration of architecture, art and design by Etulan A. Joseph.

WHY EAST TO WEST? In my architectural education, I have accumulated an odessy of projects that range in scale, programming and approach.

However, a key element that influenced these projects is location.

I've had the privilege of attending three architecture schools across the globe, giving me the opportunity to design, investigate and experiment in major cities such as Chicago, Athens, Istanbul and Kuala Lumpur. Upon reflection, I've noticed that designing on this latitundial spectrum, hence East to West, gauged the approach which impacted the architecture and the like, differently every single time. The explorative yet pragmatic approach is constant but navigating and adapting to various historical, political, social, economical and architectural contexts was inevitable. East To West documents these contexts, the response and the results, from buildings to drawing productions, showcasing the design perspective I’ve developed along this journey thus far.

PHILOSOPHY CRITICAL THINKING + THEORY In order to engage in the approach of architecture, design and art, I believe that one has to have the cognitive ability to continually assess concepts, processess, arguments and methodologies. This allows for a deeper investigation of issues and solutions. It connects the historical and contemporary, the written and the built, the practical and explorative. What this grants is the transformation of the architecture we create and even the approach in creating them.

EXPLORATION OF METHODOLOGY In the words of John Heskett, "Design is to design a design to produce a design." For architects, designing this design is a complex process. However, architects can get and, quite frankly, have been stuck in this doctrinated methodology that at times ends up being mechanical. This is not to say that decisions and processes should be implicit but I believe that there are other methodoligies to be explored, both tangible and intangible. This exploration of methodology has the potential to create better architecture.

REPRESENTATION + COMPOSITION The way we read drawings, the underlying themes, the organization and the interpretation of said drawings as a whole is a critical concept in the discipline of architecture. Attention to how this organization works on traditional paper as well as contemporary media is also another exercise I enjoy exploring as it creates another space for presenting and documenting architecture.

001 TECHNOLOGY INCUBATOR [Topography + Form + Social Architecture] Johor Bahru, Malaysia Spring 2017 [Academic]

ABOUT: The exisiting contour was the most disinguishing character of the site of 001 Incubator. Another interesting facet of the site were the adjacencies which had contrasting architectural styles from vernacular to brutalism. Due to its location at one the higher points in Johor Bahru, the views of the city and extensively, Singapore, was also a prominant feature. 001 Technology Incubator takes advantage of the context, creating architecture that responds to its environment in an atypical way. Firstly, pushing the architecture down into the contour reduces visual confusion with neighboring architecture styles. Secondly, the building and windows were oriented towards the sea celebrate the views that are received on the site. Adapting to the topography, the incubator plays with different levels between the two blocks as well as internally. Even the access to the building, though a bit informal, highlights the junction between the two prominent streets bordering the site, funnelling pedestrians into the spatial experience that awaits them below.

A SENSITIVE RESPONSE One of the most standout qualities that posed a challenge yet veiled an opportunity was the diversity of architectural identies with the adjacent buildings. The styles from brutalism to modernism to vernacular Malaysian architecture required a high level of sensitivity in the response to the site. Against the convention of building up, the architecture uses the existing contour by burying itself into it. This minimizes the confusing visual dialogue between the building and its neighbors. This sensitive approach to context also minimizes the imposition of manmade intervention and creates the opportunity to use another "facade" of the building, the roof.

THE AXIS

Creating an axis that serves as agencies of both circulation and social interaction, was an immediate strategy that was explored since the beginning of the design process. By analyzing the site, drawing paths and making connections between various nodes and context, a pragmatic axis was created; generating a method of strategic site planning and fortified the aim of creating another public avenue.

CONCEPT Generating a dramatic interpretation of the site's topography through rigorous cutting and folding created an unexpected and playful element to the architecture. Along with designing a pedestrian experience throughout the building and a similar approach of cutting and folding internal volumes, 001 became a series of unanticipated moments for both users of the building and the public.

Using a steel frame system to obtain the intended geometry of the facade was needed. This framework allowed for the concept of exaggerating the landscape to be translated.

ABOUT: The aim of the project was to familirize oneself with the concept and technique of collage-montage. Memory Montage analyzes the technique and its relationship in modern day architectural approaches to space as well as the representation of that space. Exploration of this artistic strategy in other disciplines such as film, photography, paintings, literature and music allows for the understanding of how these theoretical concepts can be applied in the discourse of architecture. Using different kind of hybrid methods of both the physical and digital sphere, multiple translations of ideas and concepts were created, from deconstructed texts to projective installation.

Cabinets of curiosities also known as Kunstkammers were small collections of extraordinary objects which attempted at categorizing these objects. The objects selected told stories about the world, its history and the collector's interests and oddities. Not only did the cabinet served as an undefined space of showcase or gallery, it also applied the technique of collagemontage, overlaying objects and images creating illusions, new narratives, new worlds through the experience of the curator or owner.

‘The City is Not A Tree’ by Christopher Alexander

MEMORY MONTAGE

In the natural city, even the house on a long street (not in some little cluster) is a more accurate acknowledgement of the fact that your friends live not next door, but far away, and can only be reached by bus or car. In this respect. Manhattan has more overlap in it than Greenbelt. And though one can argue that in Greenbelt, too, friends are only minutes away by car, one must then ask:since certain groups have been emphasized by the physical units of the physical structure, why are just these the most irrelevant ones?The units of which an artificial city is made up are always organized to form a tree. So that we get a really clear understanding of what this means, and shall better see its implications, let us define a tree once again.

Whenever we have a tree structure, it means that within this structure no piece of any unit is ever connected to other units, except through the medium of that unit as a whole. The enormity of this restriction is difficult to grasp. It is a little as though the members of a family were not free to make friends outside the family, except when the family as a whole made a friendship.

CREATING THE NEW FROM THE OLD

MEMORY MONTAGE

Presented with maps from various periods, multiple "new worlds" and interpretations were created through the collage.montage technique.

Underlying textures, languages and other devices were critically considered.

Fragmenting the old and assembling the new into these worlds and constellations, within architectural parameters, became an architectural operation in itself.

ABOUT: The intention of 127 Social Housing was to explore the possibilities of residential architecture. It also pushes the threshold of building form and interpretation in the city of Kayseri. During the design process, there were several challenges one explored how to optimize between site and architecture, another was the promotion of sustainability or the culture of sustainable living which appeared to be lacking in the city and the provision of a structure that stayed within the city's building regulations; all done within the framework of creating affordable, habitable spaces for individuals. Several aims of this project were identified prior to the design of the project. The ones that were prioritized were sustainability, hybridization of public and private zones, creation of architecture for current and future residents and forming a link between infrastructure and the infrastructure's location. Detailing of this project was also a significant part of the project and done so as accurate as possible by focusing on how systems such as wall, floor, foundation and the like were constructed and integrated.

1_ The basic design concept for the apartments began with a single 3.50m x 3.50m x 2.88m cube.

4_ Cubes were duplicated or deleted based on how many bedrooms and bathrooms were needed.

2_ It was then decided to begin with nine cubes, for each typical space within a home - kitchen, dining, living room, bedrooms.

5_ The cubes were then adjusted in length to fit the requirements of several spaces.

3_ The cubes were then joined together in a way so that certain spaces were adjascent to each other so that function together.

6_ The apartments then achieved their form. By adding a balcony, residents can obtain light from outside as well as adding a texture to the fascade the building.

4_ The surfaces were pushed or pulled based on location by the sun. The shorter towers are towards the East and West of the site while the taller ones sit towards the North.

2_ The building towers were then divided to solve the height problem.

5_ An additional floor for local business and recreational events was added below the residential apartments.

3_ Each tower was made even in height and they would be spread out across the site, reducing the wastage of the space.

1_ The building design that was originally proposed was four towers of varying height.

However, it was too tall and caused a lot of space to be wasted.

It was intentional to provide or create a new dynamic in what 127 Social Housing looked like and how indivduals may experience the space. This is addressed in several ways on the large scale.

However, on the small scale, this problem is tackled simply in the arrangement of the apartments to each other. It is very typical to have each apartment lined up next to each other. It makes for easier connections, manages the space a little bit better and makes for a very processional form of architecture. 127 Social Housing attempts to divert from this. Instead, most of the apartments occupy their own space or corner. This gives a sense of individuality within the frame of collectivity. As one moves up the floors, the apartments get less, allowing for a change in the floor plans while simultaneously using this as a platform to create green meeting spaces as well as areas dedicated to the mechanical workings of the building.

ABOUT: The main objective was to explore the conceptual and practical approaches of deployable structures with the development of a lightweight-structural model at the 1:1 scale. Furthermore, the creation of habitable spaces and architectural components through these morphological studies sits at the core of this investigation. Exploring these new design strategies using parametric design and fabrication allowed for the real life application and production of these structures. Both physical and digital models as well as software were used in studying and understanding the complex behaviors of these systems and, by extension, these structures.

DEPLOYABLE STRUCTURES WITH ARTICULATED BARS The creation of multiple complex configurations allowed for analysis the numerous possible ways these structures of simple geometry - the straight bars, move. From the 2D structures to the 3D ones, the multiple compositions generated many different shapes and types of movements - both synclastic and anti-synclatic.

DEPLOYABLE STRUCTURES WITH POLYGONAL SURFACES From understanding deployable structures with straight articulated bars, angular scissors systems were explored. This system is made up of rigid elements with joints that were asymmetrical. These joints produce movements of inscribed polygons. Deployable surfaced structures allowed for further exploration of spatial configurations and their applications in architecture and design such as facade systems; lamps and deployable emergency shelters.

THE PROPOSAL: A LIGHTWEIGHT FOLDABLE DOME FOLDABLE PAVILION

Designed by the supervisor, Omar Avellaneda, the structure proposed was a dome that would become a space for assembly, either for rest or entertainment. The 3 meter tall structure, covering an area of 28 square meters, would be deployable and easily assembled. Using wood would also make it lightweight - approximately 20kg. It consisted of 180 wooden bars, 80 pvc joints and 480 nuts and screws.
