Welcome to Elizabethtown College’s Commencement ceremony celebrating the Class of 2025.

Today, we proudly celebrate their accomplishments.

Additionally, we congratulate those who are graduating with Latin honors. An undergraduate student who has achieved a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.60 is graduated cum laude; of 3.75, magna cum laude; of 3.90, summa cum laude. At the time of Commencement, student academic records are not finalized; therefore, Latin honors are officially annotated on the transcripts and diplomas of students who have graduated. Others are working toward the requirements to earn Honors in the Discipline and to be inducted into one of the institution’s honoraries, which is noted on the transcripts of students who graduated. Within the School of Graduate and Professional Studies (SGPS), those students who have met the GPA requirements for Latin honors but lack the 60 residential credits in a bachelor’s degree required for those designations will have their transcripts reflect the award designation of SGPS Honors upon successful completion of all degree requirements.

T he C eremony and its S ymbolism The caps, gowns, and hoods worn in our academic ceremonies are modified versions of the clothing worn in medieval times to distinguish clerical and academic groups from the laity. The priests or monks who taught in the universities — Bologna, Paris, and Oxford — and their students wore gowns and hoods to their lectures, probably for warmth in the damp, unheated halls where classes were held.

Opinions differ concerning the origins of the caps worn in present-day academic ceremonies.

One view is that the “mortarboard” is adapted from the wooden square used by masons. Another maintains that it represents the books carried by scholars.

The tassels worn on the caps vary in color. At Elizabethtown College, they represent the wearer’s degree. Tassels worn by those holding doctoral degrees may be black or gold.

Most American institutions have adopted the use of black gowns, but some use colored gowns.

European universities are somewhat less rigid than American institutions in the cut of their gowns and in the style of their caps. The gown for those holding a bachelor’s degree is worn closed. The gown for those holding a master’s degree is worn open or closed, depending partly on its tailoring. The gown for those holding a doctoral degree is worn open or closed, depending on the preference of its wearer. Also, the sleeves of the three types of gowns are of different lengths and cuts. The sleeves of the gown of those holding a doctoral degree have three horizontal velvet stripes, and the gown itself has a vertical facing of velvet.

The length of the hood indicates the type of degree held by the wearer: shorter for an associate degree, slightly longer for a bachelor’s degree, medium for a master’s degree, and long for a doctoral degree.

Today, hoods worn in academic processions are more colorful than those worn in earlier times.

The color of a hood’s lining indicates the degree-granting institution. The color of its facing represents the academic discipline in which the degree has been granted.

Among today’s graduates are international and study-abroad students, many of whom are wearing multicolored sashes that represent a multitude of countries that are either their home country or the location(s) in which they studied.

In our program, there are three different affiliations that we recognize: “P” for Parent, “G” for Grandparent, and “H” for an Honorary degree given by the College.

C ommencement S peaker H onorary D egree R ecipient S. Dale High ’63, H’93, P’86

Doctor of Public Service A visionary entrepreneur and philanthropist, S. Dale High ’63, H’93, P’86 is an esteemed alumnus of Elizabethtown College and its 2025 Commencement speaker.

High serves as Chair Emeritus for High Industries Inc. and High Real Estate Group LLC. Upon joining the family business following his graduation from Etown in 1963, he was appointed as CEO in 1977. Under High’s values-based leadership, the companies grew to encompass more than 12 entities and nearly 2,000 coworkers across six states.

Guided by principles of harnessing the power of business for community good, High Foundation was established in 1980 to support community growth and vitality, as well as to improve the lives of people who live and work in Lancaster County through philanthropic efforts.

High Foundation has driven progress across education, health and human services, arts and culture, environmental stewardship, and social enterprise by supporting numerous nonprofit projects and organizations. In December 2023, S. Dale High completed his transfer of ownership of High Real Estate Group LLC to High Foundation, directing all dividends to community needs and leaving a lasting legacy that will impact Lancaster County and beyond for generations.

In 1995, High and a group of visionary local business leaders opened The High Center for Family Business, located on Elizabethtown College’s campus. Now operating as a nonprofit of its own, it is one of the nation’s first and largest centers dedicated to family and privately held businesses.

A Business Administration major while at Etown, High served on the College’s Board of Trustees from 1972 to 1998 and continues to offer his advisement and governance as an Emeritus Trustee. He has generously supported the College through numerous capital projects and initiatives. In recognition of his contributions, he received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters in 1993, the Distinguished Business Alumni Award, and later, the Centennial Medal for outstanding service.

In recognition of his remarkable legacy of community impact as a civic leader, innovator, and changemaker, Elizabethtown College presents alumnus S. Dale High ’63, H’93, P’86 with an honorary degree.

Judy S. Ware ’68

Doctor of Humane Letters An engaged volunteer, leader, and philanthropist within the Lancaster County community, Judy S. Ware ’68 is an esteemed alumna and dedicated supporter of Elizabethtown College.

A 1968 graduate of Etown with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education, Ware spent many years as an art teacher at Lancaster Country Day School, retiring in 1997 and later becoming a fellow and honorary alumna of the school.

Ware graciously served 15 years on the Elizabethtown College Board of Trustees, holding various roles, including Secretary to the Board and Chair of the Enrollment and Marketing Committee. Judy and her husband, Paul, have generously supported the Elizabethtown College Fund and capital projects such as the Bowers Center for Sports, Fitness & Well-Being and the Bollman Fabrication Laboratory.

In 2007, the Wares established the Judy S. ’68 and Paul W. Ware Lecture on Peacemaking, which brings Nobel Peace Prize winners, influential journalists, and bestselling authors to Etown to discuss global issues.

Longtime advocates for the arts, the Wares were fundamental in the construction of the Ware Center along Gallery Row in Lancaster - a space that serves as the region’s premier performing arts center and a hub of cultural activity. As an active civic leader, Ware has supported many local organizations, including the Boy Scouts of America, the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra, and LancasterHistory.

In recognition of her unwavering commitment to enriching the campus and surrounding community through her tireless support, Elizabethtown College presents alumna Judy S. Ware ’68 with an honorary degree.
