No Need to Move the Party Inside!
When family and friends are outside enjoying a special event or just a time of relaxation, why be forced to bring your party back inside because of an unexpected afternoon shower or that relentless summertime sun? The solution is simple thanks to Undercover Systems.
If your home has a raised deck, Undercover Systems will install a modular designed roof system under the underside of your deck. Their patented roof/ceiling system, consisting of individual ceiling panels and integrated gutters, collect rain water and melting snow or ice, channeling water and debris from the panels to the system’s perimeter gutters and downspout system. While protecting you from rain, this same ceiling system will also provide much needed shade during those “Dog Days” of summer.
Homeowners appreciate the fact they can select from a variety of colors and panel profiles to create that showcase quality look that not only enhances their home’s exterior appearance, but also increases the value of their homes. “But be careful not to confuse Undercover Systems with the competition which uses generic, off-theshelf components purchased from the local
big-box retailers,” says local Undercover Systems owner, Jim Conn. “Every system we install is custom engineered, designed and manufactured by Undercover System specifically for your home’s raised deck. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach here at Undercover Systems.”
Here are some other important facts to consider when selecting an underdeck roofing system:
» The Undercover System is self-supported by its structurally engineered load bearing gutter system that attaches to the inside perimeter of the area being covered.

» This patented Under-deck Ceiling System does NOT attach to your home’s deck joists – no nailing, stapling or joist modification.
» To protect your deck joists, NO water or debris are brought into direct contact with your home’s deck joists.
So why are these facts important you might ask?
Architecturally recognized to promote the health of your deck, Undercover Systems modular, self-supporting Under-deck Ceiling Systems are designed to maximize the air flow in and around your deck joists ensuring their longevity. Systems that attach directly to deck joists can impair the free flow of air which can dramatically reduce the life of your deck.
“We can help you to replace that dark, damp space under your home’s deck with a dry outdoor living space that you and your family can enjoy in every season of life. Why not transform that space into a new outdoor living room or kitchen that blends seamlessly into your home’s exterior and surrounding landscaping?”
Say goodbye to that ugly water stained, cobweb underside of your home’s raised deck and hello to your new designer inspired out-of-doors living area with one easy phone call. A complaint free member of the Better Business Bureau, Jim and his team of experienced craftsmen will complete your project to your complete satisfaction. In fact, Jim personally supervises each and every Undercover Systems installation and backs it up with a lifetime guarantee.

When May is mentioned, it brings to mind spring flowers, weddings, and graduations. More importantly, May is also the month to remember and honor those who have sacrificed so much for us.
On Sunday, May 14th, we’ll celebrate Mothers, all that they do for their families, and the influence they have in shaping their children’s lives.
A mother’s love is unending and unconditional, sacrificial, patient, protective, and provides comfort and encouragement to her children. It is often said that a mother’s love for her children is a reflection of God’s love for us: it “Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.” (1 Corinthians 13:7) KJV
So let your mom know how much she is appreciated by pampering her on her special day.
Everyone at East Tennessee’s Mountain Views wishes all moms a very Happy Mother’s Day!
We should also remember and honor our soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom; let’s show them the respect they deserve, not just on Memorial Day (5/29/23), but everyday. “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” John 15:13
Remember the Fallen
Memorial Day, Monday, May 29, 2023
What does Memorial Day mean to you? Is it a long awaited 3-day weekend? Is it time for an out-of-town trip or a time reserved for parties and picnics? When trying to find Memorial Day remembrance ceremonies in my area, I could only find concerts and barbeques. I wonder if our children truly understand what Memorial Day is all about.
According to https://www.govinfo.gov/features/memorial-day - these are the facts:
Memorial Day commemorates all the women and men who have died while in military service and will be observed this year on May 29, 2023, the last Monday in May as designated by Federal law (36 U.S.C. 116).
Begun in the late 1860’s as Decoration Day, spring flowers were distributed at graves to honor those fallen in the Civil War. By the end of the 19th century, ceremonies were being held in cities across the country. In 1966, the Federal Government declared Waterloo, New York, the official birthplace of Memorial Day. (Source: Department of Veterans Affairs )
Public Law 106-579, signed into law December 28, 2000, designated 3:00 p.m. (local time) on Memorial Day each year as the ‘‘National Moment of Remembrance” and created the White House Commission on the National Moment of Remembrance.
According to the American Heritage Dictionary, “Memorial” is defined as:
mə-môr’ē-əl noun
• Something, such as a monument or holiday, intended to celebrate or honor the memory of a person or an event.
• That which preserves the memory of something; anything designed or adapted to serve as a reminder of a person, an event, or a fact or facts of any kind belonging to past time, as a record, a monument, an inscription, a custom, a periodical observance, etc.
• A written statement of facts or a petition presented to a legislative body or an executive.
Great facts; but what does it mean to you? Will you remember - and honor - the sacrifices so many of our soldiers made for our country? While Memorial Day is designed to remember those who lost their lives during battle, all of our veterans have sacrificed.
Some experienced the direct loss of a battle buddy standing or sitting right next to them. They too have left something of themselves on the battlefield. So many have paid the ultimate price for our freedom. Yes, OUR freedom. Some continue to pay carrying those memories. I’ve heard people say that those we’ve lost would want us to live our lives without survivor’s guilt. Being happy and moving forward doesn’t mean we forget our brothers and sisters.1
We will never forget, and we should take time to remember and be thankful for the lives we get to live and the freedoms we enjoy but so often take for granted.
Take your kids and your grandkids to a Veteran Memorial and read the names engraved upon it. These are not just made-up names. Each one represents a real person, a father/mother, a brother/sister, an uncle/aunt, a son/daughter, or a grandfather/grandmother who never got the chance to take any more vacations or attend any more barbeques. Make sure future generations never forget and never take our freedom for granted.1
So, on this Memorial Day, while we’re fellowshipping with friends and putting mustard on our hotdogs, I hope each one of us takes a moment away to be grateful for why we have our freedom, and with dignity and respect, remember the fallen.

Cookie Prison Ministry
Kairos Prison Ministry may be a new name to many of you reading this article. Possibly you have heard it called the “cookie ministry”. Thousands of cookies are baked to take into the prison for a 3 ½ day weekend serving the women at Bledsoe Correctional Complex. Over the course of the weekend, we will deliver over 1,200 cookies to incarcerated women, wardens, officers, and some of the men that are in lockdown. This unique ministry is changing hearts, transforming lives, and impacting the world. Over this 3 ½ day weekend, talks will be given by lay persons and clergy. Real food will be taken inside that will melt your heart, as you witness tears run down the faces of the women, letting them know they are loved unconditionally. And we do not care what they have done. There is a special forgiveness service on Saturday evening in which the women will take two dozen cookies back to their living quarters. One dozen for themselves, and the other dozen to give to the person they need to forgive. This is a powerful witness. In fact, it was said that last year one officer gave his one dozen cookies to another officer as an act of forgiveness.
Many reading this might say, “how can I help, what can I do to be a part of this program?” We have many local churches that help bake chocolate chip cookies. Many will be a part of our prayer vigil by taking a 30-minute prayer slot, and donations are made to provide a meal for the incarcerated and even sponsor women that attend the weekend. At Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran Church, we have members that pay for the cookies, purchase a meal, and last year they made a large donation to this program. At one of our local churches in Tellico Village, the women baked over 300 dozen cookies as a part of their mission to this ministry. Two of the Tellico Village churches donate to the ministry on an annual basis. The weekend expense is approximately $8,000 to $9,000. We also invite volunteers to be a part of one of these programs as we serve Bledsoe Correctional Complex for Men and Women (Pikeville, TN) and Morgan County Correctional Complex Men (Wartburg, TN).
Kairos Prison Ministry International is in 37 States and 9 countries. Kairos Prison Ministry is ONE program which includes Kairos Inside to incarcerated men and women, Kairos Outside serving women impacted by incarceration, and Kairos Torch for incarcerated youth. In 2021, Kairos Prison Ministry was named a Top-Rated Nonprofit for the 5th straight year. Visit the website to learn more about this ministry at kairosprisonministry.org.

Preparing for a New Shepherd
Finishing the Gospel of Mark on Easter Sunday, Charlie Campbell, our interim pastor, is preparing the Congregation of First Baptist Church of Tellico Village to welcome a new pastor. As many know, Charlie Barnard was pastor for over 17 years retiring last April. A search team was assembled and the effort to discover the pastor that God has waiting for us began. Using I Thessalonians 5:12-28 as the Biblical text, Charlie Campbell will preach each week on the Congregation’s responsibility to ‘hold a pastor in the highest regard in love because of their work for us.’ He’ll continue to teach us throughout the month.
If you are looking for a church home, come and hear the Words of Jesus and Worship with us. Our exceptional music ministry includes our choir and an orchestra under the leadership of David Whipple, Jr. Jesus commanded us to go and make disciples, and we take that charge quite seriously. Under the leadership of our Associate Pastor Kem Lindsay, we offer several adult Bible study options. Sunday Worship services are 9:00 AM and 10:30 AM with adult Bible study options available at the same times. For more info visit us at FBCTV.org.

If their job is as an inside mouser, a litter box that must be scooped daily is required-this will ensure that they use it.
Halo is a mixed short haired, torbie in color, age estimated at 2 years of age. Henley is a black short hair about 6 months old and Huffy is a black short hair-age to be determined.
These three came to us from a horrible overcrowding situation. They have spent their lives in a home with over 40 other cats. They were fed and provided with water but did not have any socialization. They were not provided with clean litter but have been great with litterbox manners at the shelter. These kitties are not aggressive but have not experienced human interaction. We feel that they would be happiest in a farm or barn situation where they could earn their keep but would not be pressured into constant human contact. At some point you may be able to make friends with them. They will learn trust when they know they have food, water, shelter and someone who talks to them. They will be FULLY vetted as soon as we can get appointments for their spay/neuter surgeries.
We do have written procedures to properly acclimate Barn/Farm cats to a new location to ensure that they know their home territory and stay there.
Tennessee, Big Vol, Sunny, Shasta and Fry are also available for adoption-as well as many dogs. Please come in and visit with them….one or more will choose you as their person. Many kittens with their Mom’s are in foster homes right now, until they are old enough to be altered….stay tuned in 8-9 weeks and you shall see many social kittens ready to go home. Please Spay/Neuter all pets and community cats/dogs. This saves lives and will stop the shelter from being flooded with puppies and kittens…there just are not enough homes for all of them. Be part of The Solution!
We have many GREAT, fully vetted, cats and dogs just waiting for you to adopt them and include them forever, as a family member…. for 10-15 years or more.
Unless otherwise noted all cats are indoor only cats and should not, for their own safety, be allowed to be loose outdoors. The outcome for outdoor cats, is often unpleasant and could be fatal. Kittens and cats raised indoors do not have street smarts and are subject to predators, diseases, poison, cars, extreme weather conditions and unkind humans. Protect your pets by keeping them inside. Please do not let your dogs out loose. Put them on a leash with a secure harness and walk them. Please get your pets microchipped and keep your contact information on their website updated at all times. https://monroecountyfriendsofanimals.org/adoption/?type=cat
Adoption includes: Litter box proficient, their Spay or Neuter, Vaccinations, Microchip with registration, Combo Tested for FIV/Felv (Negative-unless otherwise noted), Dewormed, and Flea Treated (if needed). Also, you get a FREE Vet Visit for your new Cat!!! Courtesy of a local cat rescue/partner. Adoption fee is $50 for adult cats and $60 for kittens. Check with the shelter for pricing on Barn/Farm cats.
The Monroe County Animal Shelter is located at 170 Kefauver Lane in Madisonville (behind Wal-Mart) and is open Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 11:00-4:30 and Saturdays from 11:00-2:00. (Closed Thursdays, Sundays, and Mondays). Email animal.shelter@monroetn.com or call 423-442-1015 for more information and to schedule a meet & greet with a pet. And check out all available pets on our website: https://monroecountyfriendsofanimals.org. The official Facebook page is: https://www.facebook.com/TNMonroeCountyAnimalShelter.
MCFA Board Announcement
Dear Supporters of Monroe County Friends of Animals,
As good friends and donors to MCFA, we wanted you to be among the first to know our big news regarding the new Animal Shelter.
Recently, an angel donor stepped up to make a very significant donation to our Raising the Roof, Raising Hope for Animals capital campaign. The gift allows our Board to confidently contract with Rouse Construction to begin building our new shelter in the second quarter.
Our angel donor prefers to remain anonymous for now. But please join us in giving thanks for this outstanding act of generosity and kindness, for the animals and the people of Monroe County.
While this commitment allows us to break ground, we have yet to cross the finish line. We hope you will be inspired by this gift and donate the additional funds needed to complete this initiative.
Thanks to all of you we are forging ahead to build the facility we have dreamed of for years!
With sincere gratitude, The MCFA Board of Directors

Just because you can’t touch them, doesn’t mean you can’t love them…
Is It Time for a Smile
If you find yourself comparing your smile to others whose smiles exhibit beautiful, straight, white teeth, then perhaps it’s time you discovered just how easy it can be to achieve a whiter, brighter smile. After all, how many of those people whose smiles you envy were actually born with that perfect smile? Probably not many.
Let’s consider teeth straightening first. Did you know that there is a procedure – in fact, the most advanced teeth straightening system available anywhere – that has already helped more than fourteen million people achieve straighter, more natural looking smiles? Called Invisalign, these transparent aligners incrementally adjust your teeth without the use of wire braces.
Invisalign is the world’s most advanced clear aligner. By combining 20+ years of research and data from fourteen million smiles, you can trust Invisalign to deliver the smile that you deserve.
Invisalign is a modern, fully digitized experience designed to help you achieve the smile you want, the way you want it. Unlike other competitive clear aligners, Invisalign aligners use a proprietary SmartTrack® material that offers treatment times that are up to 50% faster. Patients report that Invisalign aligners fit and feel better. Also, innovations in the Invisalign procedure move more smiles, with greater predictability and control than competitive aligners.
Perhaps what you will appreciate most about the Invisalign system is that it is administered and supervised by your family dentist and not some third-party dentist or orthodontist who will recommend your treatment without ever having met you. After all, who knows you better than your family dentist?
To learn how Invisalign can help you achieve the smile you’ve always wanted, call Heritage Family Dentistry at 865-816-9211 today to schedule your no-cost, no-obligation evaluation.

“Please Welcome Jake To Our Team!”
Moving to East Tennessee at the age of 3 years old, I have grown to call it home. After a short hiatus in Virginia Beach, I came to realize that there is nowhere I’d rather be then here with my family. After finding out about having my first child, my wife and I decided that we had to make the move back to be able to raise our child in this loving and welcoming environment. After we made the decision to come back home, I was faced with many different decisions. One of those choices was for my career. I had a very promising career as a government contractor project manager in Virginia Beach but learned there was a huge hole missing: serving the community. After coming to this realization I found real estate to be the best way for me to serve the community and others through due diligence and professionalism. I am able to connect with others on a close personal level and help them find their forever home. This is something I am proud to be able to do through my profession and look forward to many years with my community. As I get to welcome those to East Tennessee, I am proud to welcome them with open arms. Hopefully, whoever is reading this will welcome the Southern Hospitality and also learn to call this place home. I know you won’t regret it!
Sincerely, Jake Gebhardt

The Music Ministry of First Baptist Church of Tellico Village presents: A CELEBRATION OF GOD AND COUNTRY
MAY 27 AND 28 AT 7:00 P.M.
The Music and Worship Ministry of First Baptist Church of Tellico Village is once again pleased to present A Celebration of God and Country on Saturday and Sunday, May 27 and 28, at 7:00 p.m. The program features the Sanctuary Choir and Orchestra, along with members of the Tellico Singers and the Knoxville Symphony. This musical celebration is under the direction of Rev. David Whipple, Jr., Minister of Music at First Baptist Church of Tellico Village.
The program will feature music that celebrates those who have fought for and paid the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy today. You’ll hear traditional patriotic favorites such as the rousing “Salute to the Armed Forces” (which includes the songs for the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard), “America,” and “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” along with moving pieces such as “Hymn to the Fallen,” by John Williams, “The Folded Flag,” by Joseph Martin, and the haunting “Blades of Grass and Pure White Stone.” This program will remind us that our ultimate freedom comes through our faith in God and the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross as payment for our sins.
The public is cordially invited to join us for this celebration. Tickets are required; however, tickets are free and may be acquired by calling the church office at (865) 408-0110.

Why Building Tax-Free Wealth Matters
By yvonne MaRsh, cFp®, cpa
There are so many ways that Congress dangles the carrot of tax deductions to motivate us toward a certain behavior. For example, to encourage home ownership we are allowed to deduct our mortgage interest, and even get to exclude up to $500,000 of capital gain when we sell it someday. What a gift! Or to encourage charitable giving, we are allowed to take a tax deduction for that benevolent action.
Perhaps the biggest carrot of all is the tax deduction we are given to incentivize us to save into our 401(k) retirement accounts. And it’s big too – up to $22,500 for 2023 ($30k if age 50+). Saving for retirement is important, so that tax deduction is an easy one to accept and enjoy. But this carrot has a big proverbial stick waiting to whack you when you retire someday, and that part doesn’t get talked about much.
In exchange for the carrot of tax-deduction, the “stick” is that you’ve agreed to give a portion of the account bal-
ance to the IRS in deferred taxes. As the account grows, their piece grows right along with it. Using a 25% tax rate example, if your 401k is worth $200,000, you really only have $150,000 to spend in retirement because $50,000 of it belongs to the IRS as taxes upon withdrawal. If that account grows to $1 million, the IRS’s piece has grown to $250,000. And there’s NO escaping it – your heirs pay the tax if you never do.
But here’s the real heartburn: Congress gets to dictate how much of your 401k they keep in the form of taxes on your withdrawals. It’s a moving target over which you have no control. You end up accepting a tax deduction at today’s rates, inherently giving them permission to own however much of your account they need, in the form of higher tax rates. If you’re keeping an eye on the national debt and the increasing fragility of SS and Medicare as more and more baby boomers retire, it seems inevitable
that taxes will go up.
So what’s the solution? Playing the long game and forgoing the tax-deductible carrot in exchange for growing a taxfree Roth 401k or IRA. You’ll forever own 100% of your account and be forever immune to future tax increases. If you’ve already built a sizable pre-tax 401k, look to systematic Roth conversions as a way to lessen Uncle Sam’s slice of your 401(k) pie. You’ll control your financial future – and that makes for a confident retirement.

East Tennessee History: George Bowman
Coyatee Springs is famous for two major incidents in the history of Tellico Village area. The latter incident was in the 1970’s when the Snail Darter was discovered where the springs emptied into the Little Tennessee River (now Tellico Lake). This led to the tiny minnow being listed on the Endangered Species list and delaying the Tellico Dam project for years until Washington politicians found a way to circumvent the Endangered Species Act and complete the dam. The other event happened about 200 years ago at the Treaty of Coyatee, an agreement between the Cherokee Indians and the United States. The key figure was George Bowman, who made his name in this area in a number of different ways.
Bowman was born in Germany in 1772 and migrated to New York in 1802. He ultimately claimed several hundred acres of land on the south side of the Little Tennessee River, building his home near the Indian huts. About 1828, he built a 2 story brick home which still stands today as the only pioneer era house in Tellico Village. Because he

chose a hill to place his home, it was high enough to avoid being inundated by Tellico Lake in 1979. Local historians negotiated with TVA to save the historic building, and I remember my mother taking me to one of those meetings at the house over 50 years ago.
George Bowman was a cooper by trade, selling most of his barrels to the federal government. Consequently, he was commissioned as the government agent to the Cherokees in this area. He settled many disputes between settlers and native Americans, avoiding troubles but making friends with tribesmen. The Cherokees helped Bowman with his farming, and he taught them to make clothing and build wells.
His son John Bowman was the first white man to preach to the Indians at the Bowman’s Chapel Methodist Episcopal Church, a one room log church. The cemetery for this family and church still stands on the hill above the house, and it is maintained by Tellico Villagers living nearby, a wonderful tribute to the Bowman legacy. You can find it and the home off Tanasi Court in the Tanasi neighborhood, but it is sug-
Clean An Epoxy Garage Floor IN 3 EASY STEPS
Spring is here and summer arrives next month. If you haven’t cleaned your PremierGarage floor of all the winter grime and dirt, it’s certainly easy to do.
While a PremierGarage floor coating is known for its durability and slip- and stain-resistant properties, just like any floor, it does get dirty and needs to be cleaned. Learning how to care for and clean a garage floor will ensure long-term function and satisfaction with your floor.
Step 1: Clear the Floor of Loose Debris
Remove anything that is sitting on the garage floor, so the entire floor is exposed. Sweep or shop vac the floor to remove dirt, sand, or other debris. Make sure to clean under cabinets, work benches or appliances. In preparation for step two, place small plastic baggies over the garage infrared door sensors so they don’t get wet.
Step 2: Clean the floor
The best way to clean the floor is by using a mop. A heavy-duty cotton mop is recommended, and a rolling bucket will make the task easier since you’ll want to rinse the mop as you go section by section. Take extra care as your work, since enough water on any floor will make it slippery.
Cleaning solutions that will clean while protecting the fin-
ish include ammonia. Just mix five ounces of clear ammonia per gallon of water. Also, a diluted solution of a degreaser like Simple Green mixed with one-half-cup per gallon of water cleans well.
Step 3: Rinse and Dry
Use a hose and spray nozzle to rinse the floor. Your garage floor will have a natural slope from the back of the garage to the driveway, so start at the highest point at the back to spray and rinse. Be careful under cabinets to limit splashing water onto wood components. Hose back and sides of the floor to the middle, and then out the door. To quickly dry the floor and ensure no standing puddles of water remain, use a floor squeegee (18 or 24 inches to speed things up) or a clean street broom to move any water out of the garage, using the same back-and-sides-to-middle routine. Remove the plastic baggies from the garage door sensors and you’re done, If you haven’t had a PremierGarage floor installed, consider the benefits:
» Increase the resale value of your home.
» Improves safety with a floor that is slip, impact, and heat resistant, and brightens the area with increased light reflectivity.
» Open up new activities in your garage. It could double as a children’s play area, an exercise room or hobby nook.
gested not to enter the house or grounds, which are private. The cemetery is open for viewing.
The house is in danger of deterioration, although protected from being torn down by covenants with the owner of the property. Many folks in the area have expressed a desire to protect and preserve this vintage historic home. Let this be a challenge to the many civic organizations seeking a project. It would be a wonderful end result to see the George Bowman House saved from ruin and made into a showplace for generations to come. As a member of the Loudon County Historical Society, I would welcome contact from any individual representing such a community-minded group.

Like a Garage For Your Family Boat
By toM iRMen
The 2023 boating season is getting underway and so is the season of endless boat detailing if you don’t own a Touchless Boat Cover System from Lifetime Docks, LLC.
Like other area boaters, we frequently see boats in docks, both private and some community docks that are protected by Touchless Boat Cover System. The concept is a simple one...create a garage for your boat that protects your watercraft like your home’s garage protects your vehicles. But it wasn’t until multiple boat owners on our community dock in Rarity Bay installed the Touchless Boat Cover that we made the decision to make the investment by redirecting a portion of the money we saved from a canceled 2020 Mediterranean cruise.
Previously when we arrived at our dock for a day on the lake, we had to first clear away the cobwebs from the sides of our boat. Then we removed the straps that secured our boat cover and then removed the cover. We shook the cover off to shake off the spiders that remained before folding the cover and placing it in our dock box. We would wash the bird and spider droppings off the cover when we returned.
Before we had started to wipe the cobwebs and spider droppings from the now exposed topside areas of our boat, the boat owners in the slip across from ours arrived. They pressed their key fob; their Touchless Cover was fully raised in 30 seconds or less. They lowered their boat lift, started their outboard engine and were off in 5 minutes or less.
On a recent outing on the lake, we pressed our key fob. While our Touchless Cover was rising, we lowered our boat lift. We turned on the battery, started the blower and after the required interval, started our engine. We were off for an enjoyable day on the lake. And yes, we’re using our boat far more than before.
And the spiders? I can’t explain it. They’ve mostly disappeared. And our newly detailed boat looks just like it did on the showroom floor in 2007.
Prepare for a season of fun in the sun on the lake without the long hours of detailing your boat by calling Patrick Boring at Lifetime Docks, LLC. Avoid the rush by calling Patrick today. Lifetime Docks, LLC

How are things going in your yard? Are your plants starting to recover from the freeze, or have you pulled them up? If you are still waiting, I hope you are starting to see new growth.
My Laurels, Loropetalum, Camellia, and Cleyera are recovering, and three of the Boxwoods in my yard are coming out. One, however, is dead. Two of my Hydrangeas were killed to the ground but are emerging from the roots. This was a very strange and hard year for our plants. Continue to be patient, fertilizing gently and pruning only dead wood, or look at this as an opportunity to try something new!
Whether you are babying damaged plants or nurturing new plants, there is much to be done. Let’s get started on your to-do list:
» You should be checking your gardens weekly if not more often. Look up into canopies of trees to check for storm damage or illness. Look down for signs of critters, such as moles making tunnels or possums and skunks digging for grubs. Look into the interior of your plants for signs of damage. If you need guidance, please give us a call.
» Winter damaged plants are more susceptible to diseases and insects, and new installations can decline quickly. Watch for signs of problems and begin treatment if necessary. Remember to always use the least toxic insecticidal products first, and learn which bugs are good guys and which are not. Some fungal problems will also clear up once the cool, damp weather passes, but others will need treatment. Again, always start with the least toxic products available.
» If you are still evaluating your plants, keep in mind that you will need to get replacements for trees and shrubs planted by the end of June. It is easier for the plants to establish root systems if they are not also battling the heat. I
suggest you don’t postpone planting this year, as we are encountering plant shortages. Many people are not patient and are opting to replace much of their yard, so the growers cannot keep up. Trees and shrubs require 3-5 years to be ready to sell, so if you see something you love, don’t wait.
» You can do some pruning to spring bloomers now. Forsythia and quince can be pruned fairly severely. Azaleas, rhododendrons, and others will need a little more finesse, especially if they are stressed. Crape murder is still a horrible thing to do to a plant that is just trying to make your yard beautiful, and chopped crapes are much more susceptible to Crape Myrtle Bark Scale. Please do some research before you start whacking.
» Let’s talk about water, because over or under-watering is the number one plant killer. Remember that sprinkler systems are great for grass and flowers, but they are inadequate for trees and shrubs. It is important to water deeply and less frequently to encourage plants to develop deep roots instead of shallow roots. It is also best to water in the morning. Try to keep the water at soil level instead of overhead. Watering the foliage encourages fungal growth.
» Did you mulch this spring? Mulch
Our Customers Say It Best.
isn’t just for appearance. It also keeps soil temperature and moisture levels stable and adds nutrients to the soil as it breaks down. If you have not applied a fresh layer, think about top-dressing. If your mulch level is still adequate, take a rake and “fluff” it, because it becomes very compacted during the winter.
» Wait until the foliage has died down before cutting back spring bulbs. New recommendations also say to not roll them up and wrap them with string or rubber bands, as this cuts down on the plants’ ability to store energy. A little BulbTone will give them a boost.
» Some of your perennials may need a little assistance as they emerge. Tall plants may need to be staked or caged, and it is easier to do that while the plants are small. You can also pinch plants back to encourage them to be shorter and bushier.
» We have great plants for container gardening, but don’t be afraid to step outside the box. Trees, shrubs, tropicals, perennials, and even veggies can be container grown with the proper care. Play around a little!
» Be a friend to the birds and they will be a friend to you! Keep those feeders and baths full and clean. Birds will remove lots of annoying insects, so attract them to your yard with plants, houses, feeders, and water sources. We are getting several deliveries every week, so stop by often to see what is new. Happy gardening!

“Moving to Tellico Village has been one of the best decisions we’ve made, and choosing Keener Homes to build our dream retirement home was also a great decision.
We had built five homes previously, so we knew what was important in selecting a builder, particularly since we would be building long distance. Once we purchased our lot in 2013, we traveled to Tellico several times for several years to meet and interview builders. Fortunately, we met Kit during one of our first trips, and we found ourselves comparing each of the other six builders to Keener Homes. During those trips, we were able to walk through a number of Kit’s homes in various stages of construction both in Tellico Village and in Rarity Bay. The quality and attention to detail was evident in all his homes, regardless if the home was in the $200,000 range or in the million dollar range.
During one trip, we attended an open house for a new builder and met a couple who volunteered that they had built with Kit Keener and invited us to see their home. Listening to an unsolicited description of their positive building experience with Kit spoke volumes to us. After seeing his homes, comparing him with other builders, and speaking with his clients, we knew selecting Kit was the right decision.
We frequently say we love Kit Keener and the Keener Home team, and recently, someone asked us why we think so highly of them. There is not one reason, but many reasons. Kit Keener and the Keener Homes team have met and exceeded every expectation, and we had none of the pain points we have experienced with prior builds. They are very organized, which was especially important in making the best use of our time when we traveled here for inspections and/or product selections. Kit spent a lot of time with us learning what was important to us and making suggestions that improved our ideas. Kit and Krisha communicated on a regular basis, so we knew what was happening and when. When something was in question, Kit asked our opinion rather than just proceeding. He was gracious in making changes during the building process when we had a request. His tradespeople are highly skilled and do exceptional work, and his vendors have good selections available. He delivered everything he said he would and more. He and Krisha have been equally helpful even after we closed, and they have been very quick to address any punch-list issues. We would readily choose Kit if we were to build again.
So you see why we always say, ‘We love our builder, Keener Homes.’”

MAXIMIZE STORAGE IN A REACH-IN CLOSET
Reach-in closets often get a bad reputation for being ineffective for storing our clothes, but that’s not the final verdict on these closets.
From one-rod-and-shelf closets to sliding doors that block accessibility, it’s true that many reach-in closets aren’t very efficient. However, with intentional design, they can be transformed to maximize storage space that meets your specific needs.
Are hanging clothes a preference? Do you need more shelving for shoes or folded items? Elements like hanging rods, adjustable shelves, custom drawer sizes and accessories combine to create the perfect system for you to manage every part of
Double Your Hanging Space
With designated hanging spaces for long and short items, you can fit more in your closet in less space. Multiple hanging rods can create one section for long items like dresses, with other tiered rods that stack two up for hanging shorter items like blouses and pants. Gone is the one long rod that wastes storage space.

Drawers are the secret weapon to eliminate constant clutter in a small closet. Drawers can store items that are small and easily misplaced, such as jewelry, socks or underwear. Closet design options include drawers of varying depths. Deeper drawers can hold stacks of folded items. Shallow drawers are ideal for lingerie, belts, scarves, and other accessories. Specialty drawers like velvet-lined jewelry drawers protect and organize all your bling.
Tired of playing hide-and-seek with your shoes that are always hiding on the floor? Dedicated, adjustable shelving displays shoes that are easily accessible. Since the shelves are adjustable, you can move them to fit any size shoe, even boots. If your clothes demand the entire closet, turn a bookcase, armoire, or cabinet into shoe storage in the bedroom or use under-bed storage.
Who says a closet has to have a door? Sometimes removing the door for an open view may enhance accessibility, as well as create a modern, minimalist vibe. Other options could be a fabric curtain on a decorative rod, go boho with beads or a barn-style door that slides to cover the opening. One advantage to a solid door that swings out is you can add storage to the inside of the door with decorative hooks. A full-length mirror also fits beautifully on a door so you can check that you always look as good as your new closet.
With The Tailored Closet you can have your perfect reach-in closet with efficient storage solutions. Tailored Closet’s wide range of colors, finishes, and decorative hardware, ensure you’ll have exactly the look you want because it’s tailored to your life.

East Tennessee Wildlife: White-tailed Deer
Photographing the beauty of Tennessee, and the wildlife who call it home.
By kalley cook
Hidden Newborn Fawn - When a fawn is born, they are born completely odorless. Mom will actually stay away from her baby more at the newborn stage, so her odor doesn’t rub off on her baby and will only see her baby a couple times a day for feedings. If a fawn survives for the first week of life, then it has a higher chance of making it to adulthood. When I unexpectedly came upon this fawn, it did exactly what it was supposed to do; it stayed completely still. As you can see the eyes are blue, and like most baby animals, they will outgrow their blue eyes.
Rambunctious Fawn - Once fawns survive that first 3 weeks of life, they often are ready to go and follow mom on all her adventures. This is when they can relax (a little) and have some fun as they can usually outrun predators by now. This is when you really get to see their fun personalities. They will often be jumping, darting around, and playing with siblings if they have any. Always a joy to watch!
It’s almost time to see these precious little faces again. With as many white-tailed deer we have here in Tennessee, I very seldom get the chance to photograph a newborn white-tailed deer fawn but see them most when they are roughly to the three week old stage. Although it’s tempting to want to pick these sweet babies up, it’s very rarely ever a good idea, this being because a doe will often leave her fawn alone for several hours. This better protects a young fawn as it doesn’t have the speed to get away from a predator like its mom does. Being bedded down and lying flat and still is the safest way for a fawn to be. I always heard the saying “Ears are straight, fawn’s doing great. Ears are curled, fawn’s alone in the world.” Curled ears are a sign of dehydration, and you should then contact the Tennessee Wildlife Agency. If you have to move a fawn out of the road, next to a pool, or due to some other dangerous situation, you can do so. Don’t worry, the belief that a mother will abandon her baby with human scent on it is a myth. I am always on the lookout for a fawn this time of year, along with all the other wildlife babies that spring brings!
Like Mom – When this mom became alert, the fawn was right there too, watching and mimicking Mother’s every move. All they were watching was more deer emerging from the woods but still a teaching lesson for her little one to always be alert. Female fawns can stay with mom up to two years, while a male will often leave after the first year and finds his own territory.

Did you know that hearing aids are high-performance computers? Digital hearing aids are technological miracles. With a processing system just a few millimeters long, hearing aids perform remarkably well. A microchip processes all sounds in real time and plays each frequency in the appropriate amplification level in your ear. The left and right hearing aids communicate with each other and allow you to hear in a natural way. Bluetooth enabled hearing aids can help you reconnect to your world by pairing your hearing instruments to a variety of Bluetooth enabled electronic devices-including your cell phone. When you use this technology, you get hands-free communication, clear transmission of the phone conversation directly into your ears and more! They also connect to your TV and bring the sound directly to your ears!
Did you know that hearing aids are built with directional microphones to detect all ambient noises and automatically filter them for important sounds? The hearing aids automatically adjust to provide optimal sound reproduction whether you are at home or in a noisy restaurant. You do not have to concentrate on listening but can participate with all your attention in the joy of conversations. Therefore, you can understand your conversation partner well in noisy scenes – whether he is sitting next to you in the car or in a busy café.
Did you know that modern hearing aids have an automatic situation detection feature? They detect whether you are in a noisy or quiet environment, whether you are talking to one or more people, and whether you want to listen to music or natural sounds. With respect to the situation, annoying background noises are faded out and the conversation is intensified, so you can understand well.
Now you know; hearing aids can change your life.

Now that I’ve grabbed your attention with the word “elopement,” I can assure you this article is not about secret weddings! We typically use the word “elopement” to indicate those who run off to get married. In caregiver terms, elopement refers to wandering, an individual who may disappear from normal settings. It is estimated that 60% of those diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or dementia will wander away. Elopement most often occurs when there is lack of activity or stimulation or can arise out of boredom or anxiety.
In order to minimize an individual wandering off, it may be necessary to hide car keys, or eliminate exits in the home; for example, if the back yard is fenced in and gated, make that the only exit available. Paint doors the same color as the walls and install an alert system. Talk to neighbors and give them your cell phone number in case your loved one does wander off.
You may have seen the Silver Alert notices on your TV or social media. A Silver Alert Kit is available through Alzheimer’s TN, www.alzTennessee.org, or toll free 888-3269888. Putting this in place is a pro-active step before you are suddenly trying to locate your loved one. Many counties have local alert systems, including Loudon County. The Sheriff’s Office offers the free Loudon County Project Lifesaver Program. An application can be requested at 865-988-2300; a tracking bracelet is worn by the individual and allows for local law enforcement to quickly search for a person.
Safe travel for individuals with Alzheimer’s and dementia can be an uplifting experience, especially if shared with family. Moments of joy are created when experiences can be shared, and the burden can be lifted off of one caregiver. If visiting family, it may be best to stay with family and share responsibilities. Plan short events or gatherings that are not overwhelming and realize there may have to be backup plans. If you do stay in a hotel, take a security walk with your loved one, and alert desk personnel of any possible wanderings. You might want to plan a day trip or an overnight as a dry run; be aware that if the person is anxious, tell them closer to travel time, so it’s not overwhelming. Take emergency information - personal medical forms, medications, DNR forms, Silver Alert kits, extra clothes, and health supplies. Check with other states to see if they have similar Silver Alert programs.
Be prepared for anything! While traveling with my mother with Alzheimer’s, I offered to sleep with her in the hotel room so my dad could get a good night’s sleep across the hall. In the middle of the night, she began taking all the sheets off the bed, and tried to get out the door. I had no idea what superhuman strength she had developed! In one evening, I became acutely aware of the burdens my dad had been carrying. Just be prepared!
