fter a successful grand opening celebration, Tanasi Waterfront Dining is officially welcoming guests to enjoy a fresh dining experience on the shores of Tellico Lake. Located at the Tanasi Clubhouse, the restaurant combines waterfront views, warm hospitality, and a menu designed to showcase high-quality ingredients while creating a dining destination for both residents and visitors. As the restaurant begins service, guests will notice that Tanasi Waterfront Dining is launching with a thoughtfully curated, compact menu. This intentional approach allows the culinary team to focus on consistency, quality, and execution while staff settle into operations and guest preferences are identified. “Our goal is to build a menu that evolves throughout the year,” said Christine Martinez Food and Beverage Director. “Starting with a more focused offering allows us to ensure every dish meets our standards while giving us flexibility to introduce new seasonal selections as ingredients and guest interests change.” The opening menu offers something for every palate, from shareable snacks and starters to hearty Southern-inspired entrées. Guests can begin with favorites like our house-smoked trout dip, which is sure to become a signature dish, or enjoy lighter options such as the fresh butter lettuce salad and Gulf prawns. For those craving classic Southern comfort, the 12-ounce pork rib chop served with mashed potatoes, collard greens, and

sorghum apples delivers a memorable taste of the region. Whether you’re looking for a light lunch, an evening cocktail with appetizers, or a full dining experience, Tanasi Waterfront Dining’s opening menu provides a variety of options. As the seasons change, guests can also look forward to new menu additions and rotating specialties that showcase fresh ingredients and the creativity of our culinary team. While reservations are not required, guests are encouraged to make reservations, especially for indoor dining, to guarantee seating and help ensure the best possible experience. Reservations can be made online through Resy or directly through the restaurant website.

Reservations are available for parties of up to 10 guests online, with larger groups accommodated through the restaurant’s host stand or event team. For those who prefer a more casual experience, the bar area will remain available on a first-come, first-served basis. The outdoor patio seating will also continue to operate without reservations, allowing guests to stop in and enjoy lake views, cocktails, small bites or a meal whenever space is available. In addition to everyday dining, Tanasi Waterfront Dining offers a private dining room for special events, celebrations, business meetings, and family gatherings, providing another option for residents and guests seeking a memorable

ummer is about to end, and fall will be here before you know it. Not only will the foliage start changing its colors, but temperatures start to dip. Children are back to school, and though it may be time to start transitioning away from our summer wardrobe, there is still an abundance of outdoor activities to enjoy. Each season in East Tennessee brings its own unique beauty. Much of the lush greenery we so enjoy in the spring and summer is changing into vibrant yellows, golds, ambers, and radiant reds. With such rich scenery all around us, it’s no wonder that this is many people’s favorite time of year to visit this beautiful area we call home. We are blessed to live in this special corner of Tennessee. Though the scenic beauty of East Tennessee is amazing, I think the people are what makes this area truly special. We are blessed to work with some absolutely amazing businesspeople featured within the pages of our publication. Labor Day is celebrated in September, and it symbolically signals the end of summer. Labor Day is a day that is dedicated to the achievements of American workers and the contributions they make to the strength and prosperity of our country and vital to our economy’s recovery. So, Labor Day serves as a reminder to celebrate and appreciate the American worker. September is also Suicide Prevention Month; each month more than 600 Veterans take their own lives. Many Veterans struggle with unseen wounds their entire lives. We and so many others are reminding Veterans everywhere that suicide is preventable and there is hope, but we know reaching out for help isn’t always easy. Please join me in praying for these Veterans and encourage those you may know to seek out the comprehensive resources at VA.gov/REACH. They can help Veterans manage their challenges before their stress reaches a boiling point. Finally, this September marks the 25th anniversary of one of the darkest days in our recent history: September 11th. We at East Tennessee’s Mountain Views will always remember those that were lost on that fateful September 11th, 2001, those who made the ultimate sacrifice, as well as those that suffered loss. Remembrance ceremony for the 25th Anniversary of the 9/11 Terrorist Attacks on the World Trade Towers and the Pentagon

his September 11th is the 25th year since the terrorist attacks on the Trade Towers in New York City and the Pentagon in 2001, that killed thousands of Americans and others as well. The public is invited to attend a special Remembrance ceremony of the individuals killed on September 11, 2001, and the military members killed during the War on Terror that followed. ow ironic that when we arrived at the Tellico Village Yacht Club for our second Ask the Expert: Brain Health Education Series, the doors were locked. Someone had forgotten to unlock them! Fortunately, our featured speaker, Dr. John Kriese, DO, a geriatrician with Senior Care Partners of East Tennessee, didn’t miss a beat. He greeted attendees outside, and the unexpected start seemed almost fitting for a program devoted to memory, cognitive changes, and the questions that come with them. Once inside, I marveled at how fortunate we are to learn and discuss memory illness

in a community where we feel safe enough to ask difficult questions and trust our experts to guide us. The format was especially helpful. Dr. Kriese’s nurse, Jasmine Satterfield, RN, led off by presenting, in a case-study format, two fictional individuals experiencing memory issues typical of mild cognitive impairment. We then followed their journeys over several years. Our group was very knowledgeable! We were able to answer Dr. Kriese’s questions about which changes in a person’s abilities and functioning were most concerning. We also saw how varied individual experiences can be. Case studies have always helped me understand complex clinical issues because it is easier to listen to a “story” than to try to absorb a list of clinical signs and symptoms. Research explains why this approach works. Research in cognitive science and education suggests that information connected to a meaningful narrative can be more engaging and memorable than isolated facts. Perhaps that is why the case-study format resonated with me—and with our group. We weren’t just learning about mild cognitive impairment; we were following two “people,” asking questions about their experiences, and seeing how the information applied to real life. Some key takeaways: 1. Mild cognitive impairment is on a spectrum, and it does not always progress to dementia. 2. Memory loss that disrupts daily life is one of the 10 warning signs of dementia. 3. Some causes of cognitive impairment (3%) are reversible. 4. Seeking a physician’s evaluation earlier can lead to better overall outcomes. 5. Exploring resources early, including legal planning, assisted living/home care, advance directives, home safety, Medicare benefits, and financial planning, is invaluable. If you find yourself or a loved one somewhere on the spectrum of memory illness, you are not alone! Our PLACE Memory Day Center is an amazing resource for you. The Alzheimer’s Association and Alzheimer’s Tennessee also provide tremendous support, especially when it comes to the important resources mentioned in #5 above. Save the date: On October 23, at the Yacht Club, we’re hosting our third Ask the Expert: Brain Health Education Series. We will answer your questions and explore the latest science and treatment options. We will remember to leave the door open. Ha ha! We all have goals. My “Moment of Joy” occurred while talking with David about his goal as he celebrates his upcoming 93rd birthday. He told me he wanted to do something no one in his family had ever done. WHAT’S NEW WITH HEARING AIDS

ast week a long-time hearing aid user came to me for a follow-up hearing test. He said he heard that technology had made great advances in “modern” hearing aids. After testing him I was able to assure him that his five-year-old hearing aids had been programmed correctly for his hearing loss. But I also talked to him about the latest advancements in the newer models of his current brand of devices. He tried a pair out and reported back to me a week later. He said the difference was nothing short of amazing, especially with understanding conversations in noisy environments. Modern hearing aids now rely on 1) deep neural networks (DNNs), 2) real‑time AI sound classification, and 3) next‑generation wireless audio technologies to dramatically improve speech understanding in noisy environments. These advances represent one of the biggest leaps in hearing‑aid performance in decades, shifting devices from simple amplifiers to miniature, adaptive computers worn on the ear. These technologies represent a major shift from amplification to intelligent sound processing making conversations easier, more natural, and far less fatiguing for people with hearing loss. 1. Deep Neural Networks: The Core of Modern Speech‑in‑Noise Processing DNN processing is the most significant recent breakthrough. Instead of using fixed noise‑reduction rules, DNN‑equipped hearing aids are trained on tens of millions of real‑world sound samples, learning to distinguish speech from competing noise with far greater accuracy than traditional algorithms. This training allows the device to recognize patterns—voices, clattering dishes, traffic, HVAC hum—and apply nuanced adjustments that preserve speech while reducing unwanted noise. Unlike older systems that simply “turned down” everything non‑speech, DNNs understand context, making conversations

clearer even in chaotic environments like restaurants or family gatherings. 2. Real‑Time AI Sound Classification Manufacturers now integrate onboard AI that continuously analyzes the acoustic environment and adapts processing instantly. This includes: Adaptive directional microphones that automatically shift focus toward the talker, even as the wearer moves. Scene detection, where the hearing aid identifies environments such as crowds, wind, music, or quiet conversation and optimizes settings without user input. Instant response to sudden noise, reducing the impact of abrupt sounds like dropped dishes or door slams. These AI systems work hand‑in‑hand with DNNs to maintain a stable, comfortable listening experience. 3. Bluetooth LE Audio & Auracast New wireless standards such as Bluetooth LE Audio and Auracast improve speech clarity in public spaces. Auracast allows venues—airports, theaters, churches—to broadcast high‑quality audio streams directly to hearing aids. This eliminates distance, echo, and background noise, giving wearers a clean speech signal even in acoustically challenging environments. The Shepherd’s Garden

t is always exciting to be a part of a new project at a church. In my 19 years of ministry, I have walked with congregations through many building additions, renovations, and beautification projects. One of the things that is always at the forefront of my mind is making sure that all we do is for the glory of God and in service of the gospel. That is why I have been so happy to be a part of what we are calling The Shepherd’s Garden. The property beside our church had been mostly unused. It contained a couple of unhealthy trees and a wooden bench, but the space had much more potential. For years, various members had talked about putting a garden in the space, but the idea remained on the backburner. Then our church decided to host our first annual Rally Day. We had a car show, a concert from Top Notes, and free brats and hot dogs. We had no idea how many people to expect, but we ended up welcoming around 300 people! It was a wonderful opportunity to bring our community together. When the event was over, everyone commented on how nice it would be to have the space next to the church as an additional place to welcome our Rally Day guests in the years to come. So, we began putting together a plan. The plan went through several votes and revisions. One thing you can count on in the church is plenty of great opinions to sift through! Finally, we had a design that the congregation approved, and we began the process of clearing the space. At the time of this writing, the concrete is scheduled to be poured this week. The Shepherd’s Garden will include benches for quiet reflection and a space where we can celebrate Holy Communion outdoors. Eventually, we hope to have a new tree that we can decorate at Christmas. Church members will also have the opportunity to purchase inscribed bricks that will become part of the walkways. More than simply beautifying our property, we hope this garden will give us another place to gather, pray, worship, welcome our neighbors, and celebrate the faith community that gathers in Christ’s name.

On August 1, we hosted our second annual Rally Day. Once again, we had the car show, Top Notes, and even more brats and hot dogs. Despite some rain that caused us to close up a little earlier than we had hoped, we estimate that we still welcomed around 300 people! By the time our next Rally Day arrives on August 7, 2027, the Shepherd’s Garden will be complete, and I cannot wait to see you all there enjoying the new space, good food, and good fellowship. But you don’t have to wait a year to visit. You are always welcome to stop by, see the garden as it takes shape, or come worship with us at 9:00 a.m. each Sunday morning. We look forward to having you with us.

wenty-five years ago, the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, forever changed this country. Almost 3,000 Americans died as the nation awoke to its vulnerability to the terrorism other nations had experienced for decades. While America grieved her lost souls and innocence, our nation reoriented itself. Church attendance soared as Americans focused on a higher power through prayer, seeking spiritual support to lessen the emotional anguish and boost positive attitudes. And, Americans began to focus on home and family, while patriotism soared. American culture was reset – for a time. A quarter-century later, modern life is a cacophony of sound and distraction. It’s a rare person who doesn’t carry a device that puts them in near-immediate contact with virtually anyone, anywhere, any time. Cell phones ring, apps buzz, alarms sound. Security doorbell cameras allow us to interact from virtually anywhere with people at our front doors. From the convenience of our palm, we can track our weather, stocks, health and activity status, even our children’s whereabouts. We can purchase virtually anything online, with delivery to our front door. We can chronicle and schedule our lives, inform, educate and entertain ourselves in our own personal digital universe for hours on end. And distracted ourselves, we exist surrounded by other distracted people moving about, seemingly talking to themselves or immersed in podcasts and music. Research indicates such dependence can adversely affect physical, mental and psychological health by increasing stress and anxiety, and cause sleep issues in children and adults. And a growing body of research on “technoference” calls attention to the harmful effects technology can have on our face-to-face social interactions. What else is being ignored – quality time devoted to faith perhaps? No society has ever existed at the level of sensory stimulation we “enjoy” today. Concerned, some schools try to focus student attention by confiscating phones during school hours. And, some families commit to quiet time – hours, days or weekends – when they “unplug” by locking away their electronic devices to live in the moment and focus on each other. Truth be told, we will ALL “unplug” from our distractions one day. John 3:16 tells us: “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” And the question each of us will be asked on our day of reckoning will have a simple yes-or-no answer: “Did you accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior?” First Baptist Church Tellico Village (FBCTV) is a congregation centered on finding inner peace through learning and studying God’s Word. Our cantor Karen knew what “Yinz” meant, because she is married to a fellow from Pittsburgh, also Jim’s hometown. To a native East Tennessean like me, it was an unknown term, easy to classify as a northern phrase. That’s until you check a little deeper to see it has the same origins as our Appalachian word “y’uns.” In the deep south states, it’s “You All” as a distinction from standard northerners addressing folks as “You Guys.” Why, then, does the “Yinz” of Pittsburgh seem so similar to the “Y’uns” uttered mostly in East Tennessee, Southwest Virginia and Eastern Bo Giving A History Tour Kentucky hill country? There is a good reason. Although Pennsylvania, beginning around Philadelphia, was initially a Quaker colony, the central and western areas were mostly unsettled until the Scots-Irish showed up in the mid-18th century. Being from Northern Ireland and Scotland, they loved the hill country around the Cumberland Valley and beyond. Eventually these same Scotch-Irish became restless, migrating further west to areas like Pittsburgh; however, many others rode south in Conestoga wagons through the mountains to Appalachia, where their descendants remain today. Some came on the Great Wagon Road from Philadelphia to Georgia, others on the Wilderness Road, settling more in Kentucky and Tennessee. My Scots-Irish ancestors came out of the hill country of central Pennsylvania, probably using the Wilderness Road into East Tennessee. I grew up around people with Irish names who addressed others as “Y’uns” or You’ns.” My cousins in Georgia and West Tennessee never used such a term, favoring the more Deep South “You All” or “Y’all.” At the same time, folks around Pittsburgh continued for generations with the unique pronunciation “Yinz,” practically the same as our local “Y’uns.” Students of culture and American settlement will tell you it all goes back to the same Scotch-Irish roots. West Virginia mountaineers travel a few miles to Pittsburgh for the big city experience and find they pronounce the greeting the same way as the Pittsburghers. It all goes full circle, I guess. And then there is another piece of folk habit shared by Pittsburghers and East Tennesseans. It aggravates locals when visitors from the midwest and northeast ask for a soda to drink. People around here never referred to a soft drink as a soda, and the same is true in Pittsburgh, I’m told. Up there it is a “pop” as in soda pop. We grew up calling it a “dope” and occasionally a “pop.” Pittsburgh folks are simply my kind of people. Maybe that’s why I grew up a Pirates and Steelers fan.

East Tennessee Area Beauty: “Slow Moments” Photographing the beauty of Tennessee, and the wildlife that call it home.

Another simple scene with what most of us have seen in our lives: a turtle basking on a log. But this time I just decided to photograph it. I noticed that this turtle has unusually long nails!

This blue heron was hunting along the bank and caught my eye for unknown reasons, because I see blue herons hunting all the time. This was just a simple moment that I felt the need to photograph.

n the middle of summer, I don’t really get out much to do photography because it’s just too hot and wildlife can be scarce. They’re usually out very very early before sunrise or very late in the evening to avoid the summer heat. When and if I get out in the summer, I’m usually just doing “piddle” photography or scouting new areas. These photos aren’t what I would call “once in a lifetime encounters” but in wildlife photography these slower days are just as fun and make me slow down and appreciate the

outdoors even more. Most of the time, I take these photos and download them to my computer, and that’s usually where they stay and never shared with the public. I figured this month, I would share what the majority of my photography really looks like - because the photos that I typically share are from my “grand” moments. ALL IS in the air! Well, some days it is. Some days it is still hot. I love warm weather, but my second-half-of-life-body is ready for some highs-in-the-70s days. I want it to be cool enough to wear a sweatshirt while I sit outside and drink my tea and look at my flowers. I am grateful for the rainfall, however. I was really worried about the Super El Nino. It looks like it decided to stay out west, which is horrible for them but good for us. The upcoming cool mornings and evenings are a great time to reevaluate your yard and make plans for next year. What would you like to do differently? Here is your to-do list to help you plan: • Do your walk around and check on all the areas that you have ignored during the hot weeks. Look up into trees, down at the ground, and around your plants. Be aware that most of your plants are not going to look gorgeous right now because it is hot and they are tired, but you need to know if there are long-term problems. • There are some things you can ignore for the time being. For example, it is a waste of money to treat leaves that are getting ready to fall off anyway, and many of the insects have a short lifespan and will go away on their own. The one thing you cannot ignore is a dying or damaged tree, especially if it will land on a house if it falls. Call. An. Arborist. Please do not hire some uninsured dude driving around with a chainsaw in the back of his truck. • You should take preventative steps if you have had serious problems with diseases and insects this year. Fallen leaves with fungal spots or insects should be removed from the ground so the spores and eggs don’t redeposit into the soil. Please don’t go overboard with the cleanup, however. Our native bees live in the stems and bare areas during the winter and need some messy spots to survive! • Speaking of falling leaves, I have never been able to comprehend why folks mow or blow up all their leaves, bag them in plastic bags, and throw them away. Then they will pay a lot of money for fertilizer and mulch. Hello? You just trashed some of the best compost there is. Blow leaves onto the lawn, run over them with the mower, and then spread all that around your plants. Again, if you had a lot of trouble with diseases, this will not be your best option. • If your annuals look terrible, remove and compost them. If they just look wimpy, try a little fertilizer. Some will put on another show when the weather cools. When you are ready to take them out, swap them for cool season annuals like pansies/violas. I usually plant mine mid to late September, and I love them because they last all winter. Don’t wait too long to make the change! Pansies need to get their roots established before it freezes, and begonias and impatiens turn to slime after a frost. • Evaluate your vegetable growing successes and failures. Make notes of what varieties you tried and where they were planted, then plan to switch things around next year. This prevents the buildup of diseases in the beds. If your vegetable garden has stopped producing, clean it out and plant fall veggies. It is not too late to plant broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, etc. You can also add compost, manure, or leaf mold (from your trees) to improve your soil for next year. • If you need to divide and/or transplant perennials, September is a good month to do spring blooming or fleshy rooted perennials such as peonies, daylilies, poppies, garden phlox, and Iris. You can also cut back overgrown plants, but do not cut into the crown. That is the short little layer of new growth close to the soil. • Purchase bulbs while the selection is still good and keep them in a cool, dry place until it is time to plant them. The planting period here is late September through November. • Get houseplants ready to come back inside by giving them a nice shower and treating them with a systemic insecticide. This prevents uninvited houseguests. • Don’t be embarrassed by plant failure, especially if you are new to the area or are not an experienced gardener. It happens to everyone. Your yard/garden is a living thing, and all living things change. Some things thrive and some don’t, so just roll with it and look at “failures” as an opportunity to try something different!
