Loudon County Concert Band Volume 23, No. 11, Section A

November 2023

T

he holidays are just around the corner, and you know what that means: music! Good music is essential to any holiday experience, and if that’s what you’re looking for then look no further than the Loudon County Concert Band. You have two great opportunities to hear them perform, one on November 17th and another on December 13th. We know you won’t want to miss either of them, so we sat down with manager Kevin Meyer and director David Whipple from Loudon County Concert Band to ask them a few questions. ETMV: Thanks for sitting down with us today. When did Loudon County Concert Band first come together? David: Well, Kevin Meyer officially started the band back in September 2021, but he was in talks with Charlie Barnard from First Baptist Church of Tellico Village as far back as 2018. Kevin had played in the Army band for many years, so when he came here to Loudon County, he saw a huge need for a band in the area. But he needed money, people, and a place to rehearse. Kevin: Charlie stepped up to the plate immediately, offering the church sanctuary for rehearsals, granting the band a small budget, and even recruiting our first director, Eugene Hattaway. Sadly, Eugene passed away in 2022, and that’s when David Whipple took on the role. Back when we were getting started though, Eugene was our director, I took care of recruiting players and getting the music selections together, and Charlie handled the location. ETMV: It sounds like everything came together very quickly. Kevin: It would have, if it weren’t for COVID. We were all ready to go in Spring of 2020, but then our plans had to be put on hold until a year later. That September 2021 date marked our first rehearsal. ETMV: How many musicians do you have in the group? David: We started out with 21, but we’ve since grown to 30. ETMV: What sort of music do you perform? David: Mostly Americana, some showtunes from Broadway, a few marches, even pop songs and popular

2nd Annual Variety Show

November 17th at 7:00 pm • Location: Community Church of Tellico Village • Tickets: $10 each • Purchase at Sloans, United Community Bank (TV), Village Salon, or from any Kiwanis, Lions, Rotary, or General Federated Women’s Club members movie themes. And, of course, we even perform a lot of holiday favorites! ETMV: Does the Loudon County Concert Band have any signature pieces? Kevin: I don’t know about signature pieces exactly. But one of our favorite pieces to perform is the song “Deep River”. I think you’ll love it when you hear it too. On top of that we actually had a local resident named Mr. Bill Buelow write a special piece for us called “Go Tell It”. It’s a variation on “Go Tell It on the Mountain”. ETMV: What’s your mission or purpose in forming this band? Kevin: Really our goal is just to give musicians in the area an outlet to perform for the public and enhance the arts in Loudon County. We’re always on the lookout for more people, too, so I’d encourage anyone in the area that’s reading this to sign up if you’d like to. We practice every Thursday night from 6:30 – 8:00pm at the First Baptist Church of Tellico Village. Though some of our players are older, some are on the younger side, so we’re not just a group of retirees playing music. We’re open to just about all ages and experience levels. Even if you haven’t even touched your instrument in decades, dust it off and come join us. We’d be happy to have you. ETMV: Are there any roles in particular you were looking to fill in the band? David: We’d love to add some more double reed instruments like the oboe and the bassoon to our mix, as well as woodwinds, and percussion. ETMV: I hear you’ve got two shows coming up. Tell us more about those. Kevin: We do. We’ve got one on November 17th, at the Community Church at Tellico Village and running from 7:00 – 9:00pm in the sanctuary there. We’ll be performing together with the Tellico Voices, Harriet Schneider and Friends, and Tommotley Crew. It’s being put on by Tellico Village Working Together (TWT) group as their 2nd Annual Variety Show. The proceeds will go towards assisting the Family Resource Centers of Monroe County, Loudon County, and Lenoir City with the assembling of food packages and monetary contributions for needed necessities. It’ll be a variety show with Broadway, Pop, and

Christmas Concert December 13th at 7:00 pm • Christmas Fellowship Dinner at 6:00pm • Location: First Baptist Church of Tellico Village • Tickets: Concert is Free, $15 if attending Dinner • Dinner reservations required. Call the church office at 865-408-0110 by December 10th. Movie themes for you and your family to enjoy. Tickets are on sale now for $10. ETMV: And the second show? David: That one’s our annual Christmas Concert at the First Baptist Church of Tellico Village. It’s on December 13th at 7:00pm, following the Christmas Fellowship dinner at 6:00. We’ll be playing variations of both secular and sacred Christmas favorites ranging from “We Three Kings” to “Go Tell It” (mentioned earlier) to a variation on “Jingle Bells”, to “A Charlie Brown Christmas” and many others. The public is invited to join us for both the dinner and the show, but reservations for the dinner have to be in by December 10th. Or you can just come to the show at 7:00. Dinner is $15, but the concert is free. ETMV: How often do you perform? Kevin: In addition to the holiday concerts mentioned, we usually also perform in March as well as June. ETMV: Anything else you’d like to add? David: Yes, I’d just like to say again, that we’d really love to have more of you join us. We have a lot of fun and get to perform some amazing music! If you’re interested in joining the band, or you just want more information on Loudon County Concert Band, be sure to contact Kevin Meyer at kmeyer56@sbcglobal.net. Tickets for the 2nd Annual Variety Show are available at Sloans, United Community Bank in Tellico Village, and the Village Salon, or from any Kiwanis, Lions, Rotary, or General Federated Women’s Club members.

A Thanksgiving Wish

ith so much ugliness and devastation happening in the world these days, it’s so easy to stay focused on those things and let it swallow us up. I’m sure you have friends or loved ones (or maybe yourself) who struggle; maybe it’s financial, or with health challenges, just to name a few. So, in the midst of so much tragedy, we often forget that there is still so much to be thankful for. It is interesting to note that it was on October 3, 1863, at the very height of the Civil War, that President Abraham Lincoln issued a Thanksgiving Day proclamation encouraging Americans “in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea, and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next as a Day of Thanksgiving and Prayer to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the heavens.” This Thanksgiving, I pray you take the time to bask in Thankfulness. To really take some time to focus on what you are thankful for. Hymn writers over the years have encouraged us to “Count Your Many Blessings (name them one by one)”; Bing Crosby taught Rosemary Clooney (and us) to “Count Your Blessings Instead of Sheep”, and the list goes on. Being thankful, or counting your blessings, is not just a tradition or a nice thing to do, but it’s good for you! Studies have shown that those who focus on what they are grateful for (rather than the negative) tend to be happier and often healthier. It’s certainly a lot more enjoyable. There is so much I am thankful for: my wonderful husband of 40 years and business partner, Tim, and our fantastic son, daughterin-law, and grandchildren. I am grateful that my mother is still with us and healthy (and enjoying East Tennessee SO much) and for all she has taught me. I am grateful to live in such a beautiful area. I am grateful for my health and for living in this country where I have the opportunity to own a business. I am so grateful for our graphics designer and friend, Meredith, who always cheerfully helps us meet our crazy deadlines. I am grateful for all of our advertising partners that have put their trust in us throughout the years. And I am grateful for all of our readers that support our advertisers’ businesses. I am thankful the first responder men and women who serve sacrifice so much to serve and protect us. I am thankful to be able to have the freedom to worship the grantor of all of these blessings, and I am thankful for all those who have fought and continue to fight to preserve that freedom. Please, remember to thank and honor them this Veterans Day. Our blessings are many, and I shall continue to count them. I pray this Thanksgiving you take the time to reflect on yours. From all of us at East Tennessee’s Mountain Views to all of you, we wish a very happy Thanksgiving. Kathy Rose East Tennessee’s Mountain Views

Ready to Lower Your Medicare Costs?

I

By Yvonne Marsh, CFP®, CPA

t’s that time of year again – football, Fall and Medicare Open Enrollment! October 15th through December 7th is your opportunity to take a fresh look at your Medicare coverage to make sure you’re getting the most bang for your buck. Here are 3 things to do: 1. Review Your Part D Prescription Plan: Did you know your Plan can change which drugs they cover and how much they reimburse every year? It’s called a formulary change. What might have been a great plan a few years ago might not be so great anymore. Do yourself a favor and check out the Medicare Plan Finder tool that lets you input your medications and see which plan provides the best coverage. One client saved her mom over $700/month on Alzheimer’s medications simply by changing plans. 2. Take a fresh look at Medicare Advantage: Advantage plans come with a lot of… advantages! They have very low or $0 premiums, and most cover dental, vision, and hearing, which most Medicare Supplement plans do not. They also include prescription coverage. In an Advantage plan, rather than high monthly premiums, you’re willing to pay a co-pay for doctor and hospital visits. But the co-pays are capped with annual out-of-pocket maximums to protect you from large expenses. And if you don’t like Advantage, you can switch back to traditional Medicare within the first 12 months. 3. Price shop your Medicare Supplement Plan: while it is true you can do this step year-round, Open Enrollment is still a great time to take a fresh look. And remember that by law, every insurance company has to offer the same benefits for a specific plan – so a Plan G benefit is the same wherever you go; you’re simply

price shopping for the lowest premium with the company that has the strongest renewal rates. And don’t forget the good news about caps on annual out of pocket prescription costs that are kicking in for 2024 and 2025, thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act. Previously, retirees could spend tens of thousands of dollars a year on expensive chemotherapy drugs and rheumatoid arthritis drugs, for example. But no more - annual out of pocket prescription costs will be capped at about $3,300/year in 2024 and $2,000/year in 2025. If this all sounds great, but a little overwhelming, Rick Austin, in our office can help. He is an independent Medicare insurance specialist, which means he is beholden to no one insurance company. He can simply look across all insurance companies to find the right answer for you. His expertise comes at no cost or obligation - so you can take the monthly savings he may find you and use it for something fun instead! THANKS AND GIVING

A

By Donna Navritil, Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran Church

t this time of year, I often think back to my elementary school days when we learned about the first Thanksgiving. I don’t think it really registered at that time that the Pilgrims had left their homeland due to religious persecution. We mostly focused in on the turkey – making all kinds of turkey crafts – and singing songs. All this was just the precursor of that big Thanksgiving feast where we literally seemed to eat all day! Indeed, the Pilgrims had much to be thankful for. They had left family, friends, and worldly goods behind in order to travel to an unknown land. Just a safe arrival after weeks at sea was enough to be grateful for. But they were able to make friends with the local Indians, establish shelter, and reap a bountiful harvest. It is no wonder that they found it fitting to celebrate and share their bounty with the locals. In 1863, in the midst of the horrible Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln declared that a federal holiday called “Thanksgiving” be celebrated each year in November. Wow! What timing! President Lincoln took that opportunity to plead with the Americans to ask God to “commend to his tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners, or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife”. It was a great way to steer the public’s attention away from themselves and the war and focus on those around them who were not as fortunate. Not much has changed in all these many years! We all have good days and bad days. The world still has pockets of war and destruction. And so many folks have experienced death or despair, financial hardships, or personal agony. But in the midst of all the turmoil, there are still the joys of gratitude and God’s blessings surrounding us. We most always have something to be thankful for. With our annual Thanksgiving celebration soon upon us, let’s not forget to be thankful for all that is good in our lives. But let’s also not forget to be giving. Your generosity at any time of year, whether it is a donation of time, talents, money, or material goods, may just be the “light” that someone living through a “dark” time may need. Thanks and giving, most certainly, go hand in hand!

Christ

s we all look forward to the Holiday season when we spend time with family and loved ones, let’s take a moment to remember and pray for those around the world who are living in fear of war and terror. We here in the USA have so much to be thankful for, especially the freedom to worship God collectively. At First Baptist Church in Tellico Village the congregation is preparing for Thanksgiving and Christmas with many special events. Our Wednesday evening fellowship meals are quite popular with the community and require a reservation with our church office. The last Sunday in November is our moving ‘Hanging of the Greens’ service. In early December, we will hold two Christmas Concerts to sell-out crowds. Tickets are free and available from our church office. Each Sunday in December we will celebrate Advent, the anticipated birth of Jesus, as we count down the days to Christmas. If you are looking for a church home, come and worship with us as Pastor David Talley preaches from the Bible and prepares our hearts for this season of Thanksgiving. Our exceptional music ministry includes our choir and orchestra under the leadership of David Whipple, Jr. Jesus commanded us to go and make disciples and we take that charge quite seriously. Under the leadership of our Associate Pastor Kem Lindsay, we offer several Bible study options. Sunday Worship services are 9:00 AM and 10:30 AM and Bible study options available at the same times. For more info about us, reservations for Wednesday evening dinner, or Christmas Concert tickets, connect with us at FBCTV.org

Heritage Family Dentistry - “They Changed My Life”

“I

’ve had bad teeth all my life, starting in elementary school,” said Earl Coley, retired Air Force veteran and U.S. Postal employee. “I was on the field watching a Boston Red Sox spring training when I absentmindedly walked behind home plate and was hit in the mouth by a bat. I can’t recommend that for anyone. Anyway, I had many problems during my teen years. I never smiled much and perfected the ‘hands over the mouth laugh.’ I visited many dentists throughout the years but never had much success. I was told I had ‘soft’ teeth – if that is a real thing. Despite having a lot of dental work done while I was in the Air Force, I still put my hands over my mouth when smiling and laughing. “I was referred to Heritage Family Dentistry and Dr. Bradshaw by my son, who swore they were the best and very friendly. I was wearing a broken partial and had several gaps due to another broken partial, which was unwearable. I had two chipped teeth and other problems as well. “Dr. Bradshaw and his team examined me and explained that I needed a full mouth rehab with crowns and bridges. I agreed. I was nervous at first from my previous experiences, but Dr. Bradshaw and his team made me comfortable. I never felt any pain, and they made me feel like part of their family and not a patient. I actually looked forward to my visits. They were very professional in every sense of the word. They are the nicest and friendliest people you will ever meet. Each and every person there demonstrates genuine care and concern for you as a patient and friend. “Today I have the most beautiful smile you will ever see. Family and friends comment on how I’m always smiling nowadays. Eating is a joy now and not painful as before. I recommend Heritage Family Dentistry to everyone – young, old, or very old like me – who needs dental work. Dr. Bradshaw and his wonderful team really changed my life for the better.”

The Finest Cabinetry for the Kitchen of Your Dreams

By Rick Kleveno, Owner – Country Carpet & Flooring / Cabinets

s your kitchen looking a little outdated? Why not give us a call at Country Carpet & Flooring, where we can help you create the showcase kitchen you’ve always dreamed of. Here at Country Carpet & Flooring, we don’t let middlemen, dealers, distributors, or even fancy showrooms or exorbitant prices stand between you and the best designer inspired cabinetry you can buy. All our cabinets are solid wood, high quality, and direct from the factory, made with your choice of colors, hardware, door profiles, and drawers. If you want more specialized items, like dovetail drawers, spice racks, and more, we’ve got you covered. We’ve served the Knoxville area for over four decades, and, in that time, we’ve earned a reputation as the area’s premiere resource for residential and commercial flooring. It’s a well-deserved one too, if we say so ourselves. But we’re more than that, because you might not know that we also are renowned as one of the best companies to design and install fine kitchen cabinetry in the area. And if you think we charge an arm and a leg like one of those kitchen designer showrooms, you’d be mistaken. We do everything in our power to make sure our prices are both reasonable and affordable, so the kitchen cabinetry of your dreams doesn’t have to be a dream for long. Thought you couldn’t afford that new custom kitchen? Don’t worry about it. Give us a call at Country Carpet & Flooring, and we’ll help you transform your ordinary kitchen into an extraordinary one. Need new cabinets? We can help. Need new flooring? We’ve got that covered too, with an expansive selection of name brand carpeting, hardwood, tile, and vinyl plank flooring. Whatever you need, we’ve got it at Country Carpet & Flooring. That beautiful new kitchen you’ve always wanted is only a phone call away. Simplify Your Life with Power

Wouldn’t it be nice to have one less thing on your to do list everyday? With Powerview window treatments, that can be a reality. Imagine waking up naturally with the sun because your shades opened with the dawn automatically. That’s the power of automation. Powerview window treatments from Hunter Douglas are a game changer when it comes to simplifying your everyday life. With their innovative technology, you can customize and schedule your window solutions to fit your unique needs and lifestyle at the touch of a button. You can rise with the sun, but have privacy when you need it. Maybe your living room has lots of beautiful windows with natural light, but for movie nights you need it dark and cozy. By creating a movie time setting you can have all of your window treatments close themselves, especially the high or hard to reach ones. We especially love this feature for windows above bath tubs, in stairways, or kids rooms to encourage healthy sleep patterns. Not only do these window treatments offer convenience, but they also provide privacy and promote healthy sleep patterns with room darkening features as well. Best of all? These features are available in a wide variety of styles, from farmhouse, to classic traditional, and whimsical bohemian to ultra sleek modern. We can also incorporate these into the rest of your design for a cohesive look that combine soft window fashions such as draperies, valances, cornices, and roman shades with your upholstery, casegoods, and rugs. Interested in simplifying your every day life? Give us a call today! We can design a solution that makes it all come together, and take the burden of it all off of your shoulders.

The two groups partner each year for the sale which features donated items ranging from furniture and home goods to lawn equipment, appliances, and clothing in addition to computers contributed by the Computer Users Club. At 8am on Saturday, the doors opened to the awaiting crowd of shoppers. Kathy Blevins and Charlene Barton were the Community Church Crafters co-chairs again this year and they offer thanks to “everyone for donations, all volunteers, and most especially the faithful shoppers that come year after year that make this community event so successful!” Tony Gibbons, Loudon County Habitat for Humanity executive director said, “It was, once again, an incredible event. On behalf of all of us here at Loudon County Habitat, let me extend our deepest gratitude to the Community Church Crafters for partnering with us, the Community Church at Tellico Village for the use of their facilities, and all the volunteers, donors, and shoppers for making the event such a great success!” Gibbons said Crafters Blevins and Barton along with Sammie Shanks, Habitat volunteer coordinator, organize the event. Shanks added her appreciation by saying, “Because of the contributions of many generous donors and eager-to-help volunteers, more families in our community will receive assistance from Loudon County Habitat and various charities supported by the Crafters.” Loudon County Habitat for Humanity is an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, a worldwide Christian housing organization. All funds to build in Loudon County are raised locally to provide safe, affordable houses for low-income families who are willing to partner with Habitat. These partner families help build their houses and then buy them from Habitat through an affordable mortgage. Funds from these mortgages go into a Fund for Humanity which allows Habitat to build other houses.

ave you ever wanted to create something that’s personal for you or a friend or relative, but you either don’t know what to make, or you lack the skills and equipment to actually do it? There is a fun solution. It’s called Woodchucks, a new local, husband and wife-owned DIY woodworking design studio located in Maryville’s Foothills Mall. Think of it as a woodworking studio with a fun twist – they help you create and actually make the item you want! Recently, we had the opportunity to sit down and chat with Sheila Smith, one of the owners of Woodchucks. Make sure to check them out next time you’re in the area! Mountain Views: Woodchucks has a very different business model, particularly when you compare it to other similar studios. What can customers expect when they make their first appointment? Sheila Smith: Well, first of all, as the name implies, we’re a Do-It-Yourself woodworking shop, and that applies to every aspect of what we do here. So, when you go to our website, you first choose what kind of project you want to work on. We’ve got a lot of different kinds of projects you can select from, and we’re happy to do custom work as well if that’s what you need. We also offer classes if you’d like to build up more of these skills for yourself. Once you’ve selected exactly what you want, we’ll work with you on the design process. Even if you’re not familiar with woodworking or design, we want to make sure you get exactly what you want. Once you’re satisfied with the design, then we schedule a time for you to come in and make it in the store. When your project is done, you get to say you did all of it. It was your idea, and you’re the one that did all the hard work to make it a reality. But we’re not just putting

We offer both buyers and sellers the perfect venue for conveniently buying and selling quality, name brand, gently used furniture, décor, rugs, and art at prices far below their original retail selling prices! Homeowners, here’s a great suggestion when planning for the upcoming holidays. Think back to how conveniently and comfortably your guests were able to enjoy your home last holiday season. Did a particular room appear cluttered, or was the traffic pattern or flow obstructed? Was there sufficient seating for everyone? Was your dining room table too large or too small? Would a buffet or sideboard have been helpful when serving meals? Reflecting on last year’s holiday events provides you with the perfect opportunity to determine how to improve your home for the upcoming holiday season, allowing you to comfortably and efficiently entertain friends and family this Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s. If you find that you could use those extra guest chairs, a rug for cold feet, or a smaller table, Premiere Consignment has a large selection of home décor with every style imaginable represented. Buyers can browse our extensive showroom during business hours, OR 24/7 ON OUR FULLY FUNCTIONAL WEBSITE, www.premiereconsignment.com, as well as having access to our full-service eBay store. Expert Tips for Conquering Winter Clutter in Your Entryway

E

ntryways are notorious for their clutter, with an assortment of items passing through the front door, including shoes, bags, keys, groceries, and more. Winter weather compounds the chaos with mud, rain, snow, and wet garments. The Tailored Closet combines expert advice from online sources and their own design expertise to provide practical ideas for maintaining an organized and functional entryway during the winter months. When it comes to entryway organization, common solutions include hooks, shelves, baskets, cubbies, hangers, and rugs. However, not every entryway requires all of these solutions. Here are several tips to create a clutter-free entryway tailored to your needs: 1. Hooks for Every Occasion: Choose hooks suitable for different purposes, such as keys, coats, or backpacks. This ensures efficient use of space and secure storage. Customize your hooks based on family members’ heights, assign hooks to individuals to prevent conflicts, and use fun hooks for kids. Additionally, having enough hooks allows wet garments to dry fully. Consider adding standing coat racks or over-the-door racks for extra hanging space during wet seasons. 2. Control the Clutter with Baskets and Bins: While hooks handle much of the clutter, smaller items like bags, sports equipment, and phones can pile up. Utilize decorative baskets and bins to keep these items organized and easily accessible. Assign a sturdy bin to each family member, place an umbrella stand near the door, and use divided trays for frequently misplaced items. 3. Managing Muddy Footwear: Muddy boots and shoes are a common issue during winter. Address this problem by providing enough space for everyone’s footwear. Consider shoe cubbies for individual storage, place a tray or bin near the door for dirty footwear, and use a boot tray filled with stones to prevent puddles. Keep towels nearby for cleaning pets’ paws and providing slippers for comfort. A boot scraper can help keep dirt and mud from entering the house. 4. Have a Seat: Having a designated area for taking off wet footwear is essential. A bench can serve as a seating area and storage space, offering drawers or cubbies for shoe storage. In the absence of a bench, a chair can also serve as a designated spot for removing and putting on shoes. 5. Multi-Purpose Rugs: Rugs in the entryway help maintain a cleaner home, especially during winter. Invest in heavy-duty rugs or mats on both sides of the door to prevent dirt and moisture from entering. Dark-colored rugs are more stain-resistant, and placing rugs or mats near benches and drying racks helps absorb drips. 6. Custom Entryway Design: Consider consulting The Tailored Closet for custom

storage solutions to enhance your entryway. Custom solutions can save your floors and your sanity, making winter more manageable and stylish. Schedule a free in-home or virtual consultation through their website to address your entryway and other home organization needs. In conclusion, a well-organized entryway can make a significant difference in managing the challenges of winter. By customizing your storage solutions to your family’s needs and implementing the right hooks, bins, and furniture, you can ensure that your entryway remains functional, organized, and inviting throughout the season. Garage Flooring: Make Sure It’s Durable 4B • East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, November, 2023

G

arage remodeling is currently the fastest-growing segment of the home-improvement industry. It’s a separate room and often the largest room in the house - that is not only a place to park a car, but can be used as a workshop, storage for items that won’t go in the house, or an area to enjoy hobbies. To give a garage a finished look and make it a more user-friendly space that’s easy to clean, renovations usually include a floor coating. While there are a few flooring options, the decision usually comes down to a choice between a standard epoxy or PremierOne’s polyurea coating, developed and professionally installed by PremierGarage of Knoxville, doing business in the Tellico Village area for more than 15 years. Do-it-yourself epoxy kits are widely available and easy to work with. The downside is many things can go wrong while applying the coating. The epoxy may not set properly or have a weak bond to the concrete, and it takes a long time for the epoxy to dry and bond to the floor. And while the cost of epoxy is initially less expensive, epoxy also quickly delaminates when a vehicle’s hot tire bonds to the surface and peels it away from the concrete. “There have been many improvements in coating technology over the past 20 years and the preferred garage flooring is our polyurea coating,” explained Brain Falls, co-owner of PremierGarage of Knoxville. “Polyurea is a hard-wearing coating that’s

widely specified in commercial settings where failure is not an option and floors are designed to last the test of time.” For the longest lasting concrete floor coating in the market, PremierGarage of Knoxville technicians diamond-grind the floor to the ideal surface condition to achieve a permanent chemical bond. Other primary benefits of PremierGarage’s professionally installed flooring coating over epoxy is: » Superior finish that cures two times harder, eliminating unsightly marks, peeling or blistering from hot tires and abrasions » Chemical, UV, stain and slip-resistant » Commercial-grade product that is guaranteed for 10 years » Easy to clean Available in a variety of colors, the flooring system is also perfect for concrete flooring in basements, front porches, and retail stores. In addition, our new hybrid color options provide an artistic dimension with its unique blend of multiple flake sizes and an array of individually colored flakes. East Tennessee Area: Beaver

Photographing the beauty of Tennessee, and the wildlife who call it home.

I

Beaver In the Grass - Seeing a beaver in the grass is a rare sight, especially in the sun like this, so I was so excited to be able to capture something like this. The beaver sat there for a little munching on the grass before retreating back into the creek.

Coming at Me - I was surprised watching it just kind of swim around me like I wasn’t even there, and it always makes me happy when an animal is comfortable around me. This is when it started swimming closer to me, and it was almost too close with my long lens!

have only had a few encounters with beavers, but the times I have seen them have usually occurred during the winter. Since they are nocturnal animals, those times have also been during the evening, but even seeing them in the evening is rare. Beavers can be found in swampy places, but I usually find them next to greenways where they seem to be used to people. They can be a little intimidating because they are larger than what I think most people expect. I was even a little surprised seeing my first one, but my encounters with them have been nothing but calm, not to say they are always that way so it’s always best to be careful. This group of pictures I’m sharing is from one beaver that I spent 20-30 minutes with one evening and hope to see again one day. Contact: Kalleybcook@gmail.com www.facebook.com/ kalleycookphotography kalleycook.smugmug.com

Beaver Bath - When it got back to the creek after being in the grass, it decided it needed a bath and washed itself up. It was so cute to see it use its hands, and it was great seeing that big tail they have. They will often smack their tails on the water if they feel threatened, so I’m glad that didn’t happen.

Beaver in Evening Light - I’m always looking for pretty light with my subjects and when the sunset cast a golden hue on the pond, it was picture perfect.

Beaver Munching - I was just watching it pull up grass from under the water and munch away. The creek isn’t normally this high in this specific area, but with a heavy rain the day before, it was able to go in areas it usually can’t access and get some fresh food.

Your Role in Charitable Support for OUR PLACE T

By Diane Strever and Celia Gruzalski for OurPlace TN

his is the time of year when many individuals evaluate how to give to charity, or how they should plan to lower their tax burden. Our PLACE can directly benefit from any planned charitable giving. This year Santa may have delivered an early Christmas gift that can allow you to achieve this objective! Most successful retirees contributed to 401ks or IRAs to use later in life. The bad news is that when one distributes those funds, income taxes become due, and for some it can impact other tax rates such as capital gain rates AND Medicare premiums. Recently, new legislation called the SECURE Act was introduced. The challenge it presents is that if a retiree leaves their IRA or 401k to someone (like a child or grand-

child), that person must take all the money out within 10 years. If they don’t, they face extra taxes. If the account goes to a non-person (like a trust or charity), the time is cut to 5 years! If you retire to a state that doesn’t have state income taxes, like Tennessee, state income taxes can still be taken from your savings if your heirs live in states that do impose state income taxes like California, Illinois, New York. This can be a problem because taking out big chunks of money might mean paying an excessive amount of taxes, especially during years when they’re earning a lot. Enter the hero of our story: the Charitable Remainder Trust. This is a special kind of trust that lets retirees help their favorite charities and enjoy significant tax benefits when correctly planned. Why would you consider establishing a Charitable Remainder Trust (CRT)? Remember the 10-year rule? With a CRT, beneficiaries can spread out their withdrawals over 20 years: less money is taken out each year and likely means fewer taxes. There’s a sneaky tax called IRMAA, linked to health care for retirees. If retirees earn too much, they will get hit with this tax. But by moving some money to a CRT, they might avoid this tax trap. When retirees move IRA money to a CRT, they can get an immediate tax deduction. For some, these deductions can be significant. Think of it as a ‘thank you’ note from the government for being charitable. Just because the money is in a CRT doesn’t mean retirees lose control. They can decide how the trust is run and even take some income from it for themselves or family members. In the end, either after many years or when the retiree passes away, what’s left in the CRT goes to the charities they’ve chosen. Using a CRT is not simple and needs careful planning. But for retirees who want to help charities and get financial perks and benefits, it can be a real game-changer. Consider working with your tax, legal or investment team, such as Miser Wealth Partners LLC (with an office in Tellico Village), to benefit Our PLACE and its current expansion, and ensure the growing success of their program. Our PLACE is a 501C non-profit, charitable organization, and any donations are tax deductible. For more information go to www.ourplacetn.org. November In the Garden

H

by

Lisa Grugin

ooray for fall! I’m so grateful for cooler temperatures. I hope that the November rain has begun because right now we haven’t had more than 0.1” in a month. I am tired of having to go home and drag out the hose. If you put off your fall gardening because of the drought, let’s do a quick recap of what needs to be done: » Do your yard checkup. Our heat-and-drought that followed cool-and-wet was hard on plants, and some of them are showing stress, making them more vulnerable to insects and disease. » After the checkup comes the cleanup. Pull annuals, clean up perennials, pull weeds, and apply fresh mulch if needed. This will help prevent the reemergence of disease and insects next year. Consider mulching your leaves instead of bagging them. We run over ours with a lawnmower and then blow them onto flower beds. The chopped leaves work as both a mulch and a fertilizer and will provide winter protection for pollinator bees. » You can still plant pansies, violas, snapdragons, and ornamental cabbage for fall and winter color. The pansies, violas, and cabbage will last until next spring, and snapdragons will go as cold as 25º. Several perennials are evergreen and will last through the winter in beds or containers. » Clean and protect any containers that are not frost proof. If they’re for outdoor use year-round, get creative with your fall and winter plantings. Stop by if you need help. » Planting trees and shrubs during this dormant season means that all the plant’s focus can go into developing roots. If you’re planting trees and shrubs, I cannot over-emphasize how important it is to do it correctly. 1. Dig a hole no deeper than the root ball but twice as wide. Make sure your language is appropriate if small children are in the area. 2. Mix the soil that you’re removing from the hole with topsoil or planting mix until it is about half and half. (Note: Do NOT use potting soil. Potting soil is for pots.) Use this to backfill around the plant. Some say that amendments are not needed, but to me this is only true if you’re planting in what would be their native soil. Rhododendrons, for example, grow in the mountains where it is shady and cool and thousands of years’ worth of leaf mold. Your building lot that was scraped clean of all topsoil does not work the same. 3. Take the plant out of the container and loosen the root ball. Dig your fingers or a cultivator in and pull those roots loose! If the roots are going around the rim in a circle, take a saw and cut the outer 1/2” off the root ball. If the plant is balled and burlaped, push the burlap to the bottom of the hole or remove it entirely. If you don’t remove the wire cage and you ever need to have the stump ground, it will destroy a stump grinder. 4. Place your plant so the top of the root ball is level with or slightly above the surface of the ground. Backfill with your soil mixture and firm it into place. It’s ok to have some room for air, but keep a little of the backfill mixture to add more to the hole if/when it settles. 5. Water the plants using a root stimulator to speed up the establishment of feeder

roots. Water the plant throughout the winter if we’re not getting 1” or more of rainfall per week. Some of you will have irrigation systems turned off, but please leave some way of watering newer plants if our winter happens to be dry. Soaker hoses or hand watering ensures adequate saturation. 6. Add mulch, but please don’t pile the mulch around the trunk of a tree. Mulch keeps the temperature and moisture levels stable and protects the trunk from lawn mower and weed whacker damage. If mulch is heaped around the trunk, however, it causes air roots and insect/rodent damage. Next month I’ll talk about holiday plants and greenery and how to care for them. Since some of you may purchase your plants before then, here are a few words of advice: » Whether you’re buying Christmas trees or poinsettias, buy from a reputable dealer! Mass market trees are frequently cut before Halloween, and most box/grocery store poinsettias are doomed due to lack of care knowledge. » If you have questions about how to care for your plants, please ask us! That’s what we’re here for. With proper care, your tree should last until the New Year and your poinsettia should last until you get sick of it and throw it away. Neither are hard to care for, but both have some critical steps you must follow. Stop by and see us for all your holiday needs! The End of Outlaw Andy Taylor

T

By Bo Carey, Historian

he New York Times said it best: “The most sensational hanging ever witnessed in the South took place at Loudon, Tenn., at 3:15 this afternoon, when Andy Taylor suffered death for his …. murder of Sheriff W.T. Cate.” Readers may already be questioning the name associated with Mayberry and the good side of the law; to the contrary, this Andy Taylor was possibly the meanest, ornery man to ever inhabit Loudon County. Taylor’s brother John had already murdered a man in Chattanooga, convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to 10 years in prison. His appeal was scheduled in Knoxville, so Sheriff Cate and his deputy, J.J. Conway, acted as his escorts on the train ride north. Andy Taylor and another brother, Bob, boarded the train in Sweetwater and quietly took a seat behind their handcuffed brother. As the train reached Philadelphia, Bob shot Conway, then Andy shot and killed Sheriff Cate. The three Taylor boys fled to the other side of Lenoir City not far from their family home, then on to Missouri. There Bob was killed resisting arrest, and John died of pneumonia while still suffering gunshot wounds from the train shootout. A few months later Andy was captured in Emporia, Kansas and returned to Loudon to stand trial. During the trial he showed no remorse but instead displayed anger and spite toward the Loudon County justice system. After a jury issued the first-degree murder conviction, Judge Rodgers sentenced him “to hang by the neck until you are dead, dead, dead!” On a cold, rainy day Andy Taylor climbed the scaffold on the Loudon Courthouse lawn. Hundreds witnessed the execution, as an observing physician noted it took 19 minutes for the final pulse to cease. This proved to be the last legal public hanging to take place in this entire region. It was 140 years ago this month, November 23d, 1883. Bo Carey is a 7th generation Loudon County resident with a passion for local history. He is the owner of Greer’s Home Furnishings in Historic Loudon and is available for lectures or programs for any area group or civic club. y now, you’re sure to have noticed that the holidays are fast approaching. Family, friends, customers, and other guests are going to be here soon, after all, and that means you’re going to want your home or business to look its best. And, of course, that’s going to include a one-of-a-kind Oriental rug. Once a rare luxury item, now beautiful, handmade oriental rugs are a feature in homes and businesses throughout the country, often replacing wall-to-wall carpeting. But now that you have one, how exactly are you supposed to clean it? That’s where we come in. Here at Superior Rug, we’ve been cleaning Oriental rugs just like yours for 38 years, so we know all about how to care for your handmade masterpiece. During that time, we’ve built a reputation for quality, affordability, and innovation thanks to our owner, Kerry McDuffie. Kerry has gone out of his way to invest in new

and emerging technologies in his field, including a state-of-the-art facility for washing Oriental rugs and making them look better than ever in the process. The result? Not only are our services markedly different from our competitors, but our customers head home happier and more satisfied in every way. Knowing the proper cleaning process is crucial to keeping your handmade Oriental rug looking sharp and beautiful for years to come. Handmade Oriental rugs are unique, each telling a story based on the exact time and place it was created, and the cleaning process is just as specialized. Because your rug is made of natural fibers and colored with either vegetable or plant dyes, we take extensive care to ensure that those dyes remain stable throughout the cleaning process. We’ve even built a specialized rug cleaning studio, where our experts in the field of Oriental rugs will thoroughly inspect and analyze your rug to determine the ideal cleaning treatment. At Superior Rug, we believe that properly caring for your Oriental rug requires more than just a carpet cleaning machine. That’s why we have a 12-step cleaning process, where we first determine the exact fiber content and dyes used, then take the rug to our specialized facility, wash it in pure, deionized cold water in a wool-safe solution. Once the rug is washed, we give it a thorough rinse and hang it to dry in our temperature-controlled drying room. We even roll and wrap the rug up for you. It may seem like a hassle, but skipping even one of those steps could compromise the rug’s color, texture, and integrity. And with the holidays coming up, we know you’re going to want your rug looking just like it did when you first bought it. Whether it’s in your home or place of business, our cleaning process is sure to put that extra magic back into your handmade Oriental rug. We’ve had hundreds of satisfied customers walk through our doors over the years, and we’re excited to add you to the list. Be sure to call today or visit our website for more information or to receive a cleaning estimate for your Oriental rug! Superior Rug Cleaning

Sounds to be Thankful for this Thanksgiving

hanksgiving is the perfect time to reflect on all the things we typically take for granted throughout the year. And that includes our capacity to hear. While sight, taste, and smell are at the forefront of our mind during the holidays, hearing often takes a back seat—that is, until we begin paying greater attention. To completely enjoy the holiday season calls for being fully present, and that includes being alert to all the sounds that in most cases escape our full attention. Here are five sounds to be thankful for this Thanksgiving: The sound of food sizzling – You can’t match the smell of roasting turkey filling the house, but have you ever paused to appreciate the sounds of a lively kitchen with food popping and sizzling and timers going off? With a house filled with hungry guests, you’re especially not going to want to miss those timers. Conversations around the dining table – The holiday season is a chance to bring everyone together for stimulating conversation. You won’t want to miss any big news or

humorous stories from the family members you rarely get to see. Thanksgiving Day football – To the dismay of many non-football fans, the NFL has somehow incorporated itself into the holiday traditions. But for the sports fans in the family, the sounds of the crowd, the big hits, and the eruption after a touchdown are difficult to match in intensity. Thanksgiving Day parades – The sound of marching bands and cheering crowds in the background is an essential part of Thanksgiving Day. You don’t want to miss the cheer of Santa Claus at the end of the parade! Holiday movies – Has anybody ever not eaten too much at Thanksgiving dinner? After the heavy tryptophan-filled meal and lots of socializing, it’s nice to unwind, relax, and watch your favorite movies. Unfortunately, hearing loss can eliminate several of these sounds. Missing out on important conversations, or not being able to hear the dialogue in movies, brings about stress and anxiousness that should have no part in the holiday celebrations. It’s time to take back your holiday season—book your FREE hearing test today! Tellico Hearing Solutions, PLLC 865-635-1887 contact@TellicoHearingSolutions.com

Dogwood Arts Sets Out to Keep Knoxville Blooming - One Yard at a Time

Annual Bazillion Blooms Campaign Focused on Planting a Dogwood in Every Yard Across East Tennessee

I

t’s planting time in Tennessee! Dogwood Arts is on a mission to Keep Knoxville Blooming by selling dogwood trees through their annual Bazillion Blooms program. Bare-root trees (2-4ft tall) are on sale now for $25 each (or $20 each when five or more are purchased). The trees are disease-resistant, April-blooming, and available in either white or pink flowering varieties. Orders can be placed year-round, but trees are distributed in the fall to coincide with optimal planting time for successful growing. Trees ordered through November 16th will be available for pick-up at the Dogwood Arts office (123 W Jackson Avenue) on Friday, December 8th from 10AM4PM and Saturday, December 9th from 9AM-12PM. Tree orders can be placed online at https://www.dogwoodarts.com/bazillionblooms or by calling Dogwood Arts at (865) 637-4561. Since 2009, over 14,500 dogwood trees have been added to East Tennessee’s landscape through the Bazillion Blooms program. “Knoxville has been a springtime destination for visitors from around the region since the first Dogwood Trail was established in 1955. The Bazillion Blooms initiative started to encourage tree planting along the 85+ miles of Dogwood Trails - but why stop there?” says Dogwood Arts Trails & Gardens Manager, Vicki Baumgartner. “We want the entire community - no matter where you live - to dig in and plant dogwoods in their yard to Keep Knoxville Blooming for years to come.” Gift & Memorial Trees: Not only does planting trees beautify the landscape, it’s also a great way to celebrate a special event, honor an individual, or memorialize loved ones. Gift trees can be purchased year-round through Dogwood Arts and include a handwritten commemorative card mailed to the recipient of the purchasers’ choosing. Many have chosen to memorialize the life and legacy of loved ones by having a tree planted; others are celebrating friends and neighbors by donating trees in honor of birthdays, new homes, births, or just the simple joys of friendship. The trees are planted along one of Knoxville’s historic Dogwood Trails, which have been a symbol of civic pride and community celebration since 1955. Larger blooming trees, flowering shrubs, bulbs, and Outdoor RV/Camper/Boat Storage (Covered and Uncovered) perennials are available at these participating Garden Centers: Ellenburg Landscaping & Nursery, Mayo Garden Centers, and Stanley’s Greenhouse. $25 bare-root dogwood trees are only available through Dogwood Arts and NOT available at these garden centers.
