The Tennessee Volunteer Spirit
f youāve been in Tennessee long, then youāve heard a lot about our Volunteer Spirit. Itās everywhere. Not only are we called the Volunteer State, but, as you know, the University of Tennesseeās football team is even named the Volunteers (GO VOLS!). But where does that name come from? What is our Volunteer Spirit? And why is it such a big deal around here?
independence from Mexico, again the call went out for volunteers. And again, Tennessee answered. Shortly after the fighting broke out, the famous Davy Crockett, along with numerous other men from Tennessee, rode from their homes to fight for Texas. These men went on to join the defenders of the Alamo, where they held out against over 2,000 Mexican soldiers for thirteen days before they were finally overrun. Though nearly thirty Tennesseans gave their lives in that battle, the whole country holds them and their sacrifice in high honor to this day. With Tennessee men in key positions of authority (including Sam Houston, a native Tennessean himself and a prominent figure in the fight for Texan independence), it could be said that Texas owes her freedom to the proud state of Tennessee.
During the War of 1812, after President James Madison declared war on Great Britain, and when British and American forces were about to battle on American soil, the General Assembly sent out a call for volunteers to fight. Soon, over 3,500 Tennesseans answered the call. And as the war went on, even more joined the fight, reaching an estimated 28,000 Tennessean volunteers before the war was done. These men had a huge impact on the remainder of the war. Most importantly, many of them went on to serve under General Andrew Jackson at the last major battle of the war, known as the Battle of New Orleans. Jackson himself later said that his experiences commanding his men, including the volunteers from Tennessee, were some of the proudest moments in his life. Instrumental to American victory in New Orleans, Tennessee had earned the title of āThe Volunteer Stateā.
Years later, when Texas sought its
Tennesseeās volunteer spirit comes across in numerous ways. For as long as weāve been a state, we have consistently put ourselves forward to help others in any way we could, even if we didnāt receive anything in return. Throughout our history, Tennesseans have consistently displayed a willingness to fight and even die, not just in defense of their own freedoms, but in the defense of others too, no matter how far away they might be. That sense of determined selflessness has defined Tennessee as a state, and it has also defined us as a people for over two hundred years. As if that wasnāt enough, ten years later, when President James K. Polk honored his promise to annex Texas as a state, tensions flared between Mexico and the United States. Eventually, it was clear that the two nations were firmly set on the road to war. When hostilities began, President Polk (a resident and former governor of Tennessee himself) considered his options. At the time, the regular standing army of the United States had only 8,000 men, not nearly enough to prosecute a successful war against Mexico. With no other options, the President called upon each state for between 2,600 and 2,800 volunteers to join the war effort.
When the Presidentās call for aid reached Nashville, it was followed by stories of Davy Crockettās heroic last stand for Texan Independence, along with the awareness that fellow Tennessean Sam Houston was fighting in Texas even then. The Battle of the Alamo was still fixed in the minds of most Tennesseans, and before the week was out, President Polk got far more than he asked for. Instead of the 2,800 men he had requested, over 30,000 men had volunteered, eager to finish the fight so many of their fellow Tennesseans had died for a decade before.
In the war that followed, the Tennessee volunteers proved their worth time and time again, earning a reputation as excellent soldiers and marksmen and becoming highly sought after as a result. More than that, their sheer numbers increased the size of the United States Army to such an
extent that other men, trying to volunteer themselves, often complained that they werenāt even able to buy their place in a militia unit. The army was simply too full to take any more men.
Propped up by Tennessean volunteers, the United States Army took the fight to Mexico. Even under inexperienced or even incompetent commanders, the skills and courage of the men from Tennessee won the day again and again. Even when General Scott decided to march directly towards Mexico City, heedless of supply lines or backup, his quick thinking and the dedication of the Tennessee volunteers under his command again emerged victorious. Despite being vastly outnumbered and finding themselves deep in foreign territory without supplies or reinforcements, they were able to win the war decisively, even with all the world telling them it was
impossible. And without the involvement of volunteers from Tennessee, the world might well have been right!
This volunteer spirit has defined the history of Tennessee for as long as we have been a state, demonstrating an eagerness to serve our fellow man without regard for ourselves. Despite being nicknamed the Volunteer State since 1812, Tennessee never officially adopted the name. Until recently. In 2020, to commemorate the spirit and heritage that has long made us what we are, the state finally passed a resolution officially declaring Tennessee to be āThe Volunteer Stateā. That legacy, and our volunteer spirit, will go on to define us for generations to come.

June Highlights From the Publisher
June ushers in the good old summertime in East Tennessee and temperatures have already been heating up. As a child growing up in Northern California, June meant the beginning of summer vacation and three months of freedom! Soon after school got out, weād load up the trailer, hitch up the boat, and depart for one of the many beautiful camping locations around to enjoy Godās beauty ā and get in some water-skiing. As soon as weād make camp, and my chores were finished, Iād get on my bicycle and explore the area, basking in the cool mountain air and the gorgeous trees!
I love trees! I guess thatās one of the reasons we chose East Tennessee to make our home. I get that same āAaahhhā feeling when I explore the gorgeous cool wooded areas around Tellico Lake and the Smoky Mountains as I did as a child exploring the northern Sierras.
June also marks the month in which we gather with family to celebrate Fatherās Day. And although my dad has been gone now for a number of years, I still reflect back on memories of him when Fatherās Day arrives. Memories of camping trips from Yosemite to Yellowstone, of going down the Super Slide, of accompanying him when he sang solos at church, of walking down the aisle with him at my wedding, of him insisting on fixing my sink for me on Thanksgiving, and so much more.
Dad taught me a lot. He taught me to read, to always try my best, and about fixing things, just to name a few. He also taught me to love and revere The Lord. Even though heās been gone for almost three decades, I still think about sharing things with him and asking his advice. I miss him.
In addition to my dad, other fathers come to mind. Our only son is a relatively new father, about to be blessed with his second child. Watching him dote on his precious little girl reminds me of watching my husband doting on our son at that age; another example of children learning from their parents and taking on many of their traits. Seems so much of life comes full circle. Iām grateful and proud of the father I had. Iām grateful and proud of the father my husband is. Iām grateful and proud of the father my son is becoming. And, Iām especially grateful to my Father in heaven who blessed my life with these three wonderful men. So, to all dads - and to those who fill the role of dad, we wish you a very happy Fatherās Day.

Why Bring the Party Back Inside?
When family and friends are outside enjoying a special event or just a time of relaxation, why be forced to bring your party back inside because of an unexpected afternoon shower or that relentless summertime sun? The solution is simple thanks to Undercover Systems.
If your home has a raised deck, Undercover Systems will install a modular designed roof system under the underside of your deck. Their patented roof/ceiling system, consisting of individual ceiling panels and integrated gutters, collect rain water and melting snow or ice, channeling water and debris from the panels to the systemās perimeter gutters and downspout system. While protecting you from rain, this same ceiling system will also provide much needed shade during those āDog Daysā of summer.
Homeowners appreciate the fact they can select from a variety of colors and panel profiles to create that showcase quality look that not only enhances their homeās exterior appearance, but also increases the value of their homes. āBut be careful not to confuse Undercover Systems with the competition which uses generic, off-the-shelf components purchased from the local big-box retailers,ā says local Undercover Systems owner, Jim Conn. āEvery system we install is custom engineered, designed and manufactured by Undercover System specifically for your homeās raised deck. Thereās no one-size-fits-all approach here at Undercover Systems.ā
Here are some other important facts to consider when selecting an underdeck roofing system:
Ā» The Undercover System is self-supported by its structurally engineered load bearing gutter system that attaches to the inside perimeter of the area being covered.
Ā» This patented Under-deck Ceiling System does NOT attach to your homeās deck joists ā no nailing, stapling or joist modification.
Ā» To protect your deck joists, NO water or debris are brought into direct contact with your homeās deck joists.
So why are these facts important you might ask?
Architecturally recognized to promote the health of your deck, Undercover Systems modular, self-supporting Under-deck Ceiling Systems are designed to maximize the air flow in and around your deck joists ensuring their longevity. Systems that attach directly to deck joists can impair the free flow of air which can dramatically reduce the life of your deck.
āWe can help you to replace that dark, damp space under your homeās deck with a dry outdoor living space that you and your family can enjoy in every season of life. Why not transform that space into a new outdoor living room or kitchen that blends seamlessly into your homeās exterior and surrounding landscaping?ā
Say goodbye to that ugly water stained, cobweb underside of your homeās raised deck and hello to your new designer inspired out-of-doors living area with one easy phone call. A complaint free member of the Better Business Bureau, Jim and his team of experienced craftsmen will complete your project to your complete satisfaction. In fact, Jim personally supervises each and every Undercover Systems installation and backs it up with a lifetime guarantee.

My wife and I moved to East Tennessee three years ago. Prior to our move, we had lived in Northern New Jersey in the same house for thirty years and raised our children there. We were active in our town and in our Church. Among our various activities, we attended Bible Studies at our Church and elsewhere.
As a somewhat new pilgrim to Eastern Tennessee, I have observed that Bible Studies are front-and-center in the culture and daily conversation. East Tennesseans are among the most gracious and open people I have ever met. Most are eager to share their life stories and those stories very often include their Church and frequently their Bible Studies. I come from a culture that is reticent about that kind of sharing so I, perhaps, find this more amazing than do native-born folks.
Most faiths have traditions that include studying the documents sacred to the faith. Christians learned the practice from their Jewish forbearers, and it has been a practice in most denominations for centuries. I know that it is common practice in many countries, and in most parts of our country, but I believe that the American South leads the pack.
The notable thing is that so many people find it so important to their lives. We attend Bible Studies, often guided by a Pastor or lay minister, to learn more of the history of our beliefs and hear āthe messageā from the source. The conversations that take place among the attendees often donāt have a place elsewhere in our experience. Bible Studies certainly allow us to share our beliefs but also our concerns, our grief and our joys. These study sessions are among the most intimate encounters of our day-to-day lives. We reveal ourselves to others in our discussions and in our questioning.
Moreover, we keep coming back. Iāve covered the same material multiple times in my adult life, but I am always surprised by what I learn. I am fascinated to hear what my fellow participants glean from the same verses I am reading. Garrison Keillor, the humorist, said that āno one joins the choir for the wrong reason.ā I might say the same thing about participants in Bible Studies. I donāt know of any āpsycho-profilesā done about Bible Study attendees, but I did come across a study that indicates that 97% of participants feel that being part of the group has helped them grow spiritually. Itās difficult to imagine any other matter in modern society that would generate 97% agreement.
At Shepherd of the Lake, Pastor Phil Vickers leads our Bible Studies, and he tends to organize them thematically. We are currently studying the Prophets. Pastor Phil discourages us from imagining the Prophets as fortune tellers but to see them more as truth tellers to a frequently unappreciative audience. In the current time, we have never been in more need of truth tellers to cut though the noise and the confrontations we are subjected to daily. Perhaps a visit to our local Bible Study group is the best place to look for guidance. It is certainly the best place to start.

FIRST BAPTIST CALLS NEW PASTOR
On Sunday, May 21st, the congregation of First Baptist Church of Tellico Village voted to call Dr. David L. Talley as their new Lead Pastor. Pastor Dave, along with his wife Joni, said āyesā to the call. Itās been a year-long journey for the search team, combing through 130 applications and listening to hours of on-line sermons. All 7 members of the search team sensed God was leading Dr. Talley to us, and the entire church family agreed. With relocation details to be worked out, Pastor Dave should be able to begin his new ministry in July. In the meanwhile, the Talleys, who are originally from Alabama, will be packing and saying good-bye to their friends in Southern California.
In the next few weeks Charlie Campbell, our interim pastor, will continue to prepare the congregation to welcome their new pastor. Using I Thessalonians 5:12-28 as the Biblical text, Charlie Campbell will preach each week on the congregationās responsibility to āhold a pastor in the highest regard in love because of their work for us.ā
If you are looking for a church home, come and hear the Words of Jesus and Worship with us. Our exceptional music ministry includes our choir and orchestra under the leadership of David Whipple, Jr. Jesus commanded us to go and make disciples and we take that charge quite seriously. Under the leadership of our Associate Pastor Kem Lindsay, we offer several adult Bible study options. Sunday Worship services are 9:00 AM and 10:30 AM and adult Bible study options available at the same times. For more info and livestreaming, visit us at FBCTV.org.

4th of July Patriotic Concert
The Tellico Village Singers and the Tellico Voices are pleased to present their annual 4th of July Patriotic Concerts. These concerts will be performed at the Community Church at Tellico Village on Sunday, July 2 (2:30) and Monday, July 3 (7:00).
Free tickets will be distributed starting the week of June 5 through the drive-through behind the Welcome Center in Tellico Village from 8:00 ā 4:00 daily, Monday - Friday, until all tickets have been distributed. Director Dennis Loy suggests getting tickets early (max 4 per person) in that distribution time.
Mr. Loy says that the concert will be a little over an hour with no intermission, and comments: We are VERY proud and honored to offer these FREE performances as a THANK YOU to the Village and surrounding areas for all their support since the choirsā 2017 inceptions.ā
The concert repertoire will include some old favorites and some new arrangements for the audience to enjoy. Once again, the choirs are PROUD to have Terry Weber (Artistic Director of the Word Players Group of Knoxville) present his wonderful theatrical contribution to our country. Last year his POWERFUL presentation Old Glory resulted in an immediate standing ovation.
At last yearās performances, the choirs benefitted the Special Operations Warrior Foundation raising over $12,000 from our audiences for this worthy cause. This yearās charity will be the Smoky Mountain Service Dogs. There will be a video introduction of the organization on the big screens before each performance; during the performance, a presentation will provide a small portion of the ways these AMAZING dogs assist our wounded veterans. We hope that our audiences will open their hearts and wallets to help support this wonderful local organization.
If this yearās distribution is anything like last year, tickets will go fast. Mr. Loy says, āWe anticipate that both concerts will be COMPLETELY FULL.ā
Mr. Loy and members of the choirs look forward to seeing everyone there.

āIfirst learned about Heritage Family Dentistry when I was a patient of Dr. Bradshaw at the University of Tennessee,ā said Heidi Hodges. āI had stopped going to the dentist because of several past negative experiences.
āI chipped a tooth when I was pregnant with my fourth child. I knew Dr. Bradshaw from my church, so I called him and he quickly took care of my chipped tooth. I was so happy with how he cared for me that I decided to follow him to his practice.
āI was very apprehensive at first, but Dr. Bradshaw and his team fully explained treatment and procedure to me in detail. They have been very understanding of my fears. I now visit Heritage Family Dentistry every six months, and they feel just like family.
āAll of the people that work at Heritage Family Dental are wonderful. I have had cleanings, a filling, a crown, and currently have Invisalign.ā
Invisalign is the latest and most advanced treatment for straightening teeth without metal braces. The clear aligners are almost undetectable by others, and some patients see visible results in as little as six months.
āI would highly recommend Heritage Family Dentistry to everyone,ā said Heidi. āMy experiences have been great, and I am so thankful to have a dentist to go to where I am not fearful.ā

Super Separates for Spring
If youāve been shopping for a dress in the past few years, you have already found the answer... there arenāt many on the market these days.
There are a couple of different reasons that weāll explore, the first being lifestyle. Not only in East Tennessee, but nationwide, anywhere you go, youāll find dressy casual is acceptable. Even around the holidays and for formal events, a beautiful dressy top and pant outfit can be worn. Weddings, once an event for which you had to have a new dress, are now attended in pants or flowing skirts, or maybe even a pant suit, but most importantly, separates.
Not the last reason for the lack of dresses being offered is the fit. Just think how many females you know that need a different size top from bottom or vice versa. Itās difficult to fit many women in the same size all over... separates eliminate the problem completely. Again, the manufacturers are listening more to customersā needs and separates comply. Just remember, you can get the same dressy look from combining
separate tops and bottoms that you get from a one-piece dress without all the problems.
Weāve combined trousers, blouses, jackets, and jewelry from every corner of the U.S. and Canada to come up for the look youāll need to go anywhere. So donāt go shopping for a ādress,ā youāll only go home frustrated! Leave yourself open to the new look of separates... combined to look ādressyā!
Happy Shopping!

East Tennessee Wildlife: Warbler Photographing the beauty of Tennessee, and the wildlife who call it home.
By Kalley CooK
In Tennessee we have a spring migration and a fall migration. These two times during the year are when different kinds of warblers, flycatchers, hummingbirds, vireos, tanagers, and many other species are migrating through Tennessee. Of course, I keep my eyes open for all species, but the warblers are what I focus on most! During spring migration, the birds are going to their summer breeding grounds in Mexico or further south. Fall migration is when they return. While the spring migration is almost at an end, youāre not too late to see birds you might not have ever seen before. Habitat plays a role in what you might see, so going to different places like parks, the Smokies, and greenways might help your chances of seeing a greater number of species, but you can definitely see them in your yard where woods and creeks are present. Early morning is best to get out and watch for these birds and just listen for their beautiful songs. I suggest getting some binoculars as these migrates can be hard to spot. If you feel like youāve missed spring migration, then keep in mind it happens again in the fall. Happy Birding!

Common Yellowthroat - Unfortunately, these species are declining due to the loss of marshes. Even on the decline, they are still pretty common during migration as of now and I always look for them with every migration anytime Iām close to marshy habitat. I love their mask on their face and it is one way to identify between male and female, as the female lacks the mask. They are another species of the warbler family.
Prothonotary WarblerThese beautiful, bouncy birds are always on the move, which makes them so hard to photograph but are one of my favorite warblers. Not only are they beautiful but their songs are too. Your best bet of finding one is walking close to water edges and with them being a fairly large warbler makes them easier to spot, not to mention that bright yellow makes it easier as well.
Yellow-Throated
Warbler - For me, these are fairly easy warblers to photograph as they love to sing in open treetops. They are also one of the earliest warblers to arrive in Tennessee during spring migration. Not all warblers are yellow I promise, but it seems like I photograph the warblers with yellow most. Other warblers like black and white warbler, cerulean warbler, black-throated blue warbler are just as beautiful without the yellow!

Are You Paying Too Much for Medicare Part B?
By yvonne MaRsh, CFpĀ®, Cpa
Medicare can be complicated, and Part B premiums are particularly tricky since the monthly cost is actually based on your income from 2 years ago. For example, your 2023 Part B premiums are based on your 2021 tax returnās adjusted gross income (MAGI).
If your MAGI is above $194,000 for a couple ($97,000 single), youāre going to get a nice little letter in the mail announcing that youāre now subject to an IRMAA
ā or Income Related Medicare Adjustment Amount. Based on your income, there are 5 IRMAA tiers, which can increase your Part B premium from the 2023 base of $164.90/month to the highest tier of $560.50/month.
(There is a Part D prescription income adjustment amount as well, which can add up to $76.40/month to your prescription plan cost.) The IRMAA adjustments can catch you off guard ā especially at two points in life.
The first is when you retire. As a new retiree, your income is probably not as high as it was 2 years ago, looking back at a tax return that reflects your peak earning years. The good news is that you can file an SSA-44 form to request a waiver of the IRMAA for any ālife-changingā event that results in lower income: retirement, death of a spouse, divorce, loss of income-producing property, etc. Itās easy to do, and theyāll even refund you the IRMAA amounts you may have already paid.
The second point in life when the IRMAA can show up is when Required Minimum Distributions increase your income. All of the sudden your income exceeds that base tier and here comes the IRMAA letter. Unfortunately, you cannot use an SSA-44 form to request an exemption. Instead, youāve got to think proactively. Systematic Roth conversions leading up to RMD age is my favorite strategy. Lower taxable RMDās can hold you under the IRMAA threshold.
If that idea doesnāt float your boat, then consider the Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) Rules. By donating any portion of your RMD directly to a non-profit of your choice, youāll reduce your taxable RMD and that directly translates to lower reported income and cheaper Part B premiums.
Being proactive is key, so please donāt just resign yourself to paying the IRMAA. Explore your options and keep those Medicare premiums as low as possible, for as long as possible!

The Craftsman
For the handyman or craftsman who likes working with his hands, custom storage cabinets, countertops and drawers organize tools and supplies. Refinishing furniture or household repairs are easier with slatwall panels above the work countertops to keep tools within armās reach for easy use. Upper cabinets can keep paints, glue, varnish and other items out of reach of kids. Optional locks for cabinets and drawers add extra security where needed and LED lighting under the cabinets will conveniently light up the workspace.
The Sports Enthusiast
For the sportsman, keeping sports equipment organized is important. Wall hanging systems like slatwall panels with attachable accessories can handle large and small items for any sport. Specialty hooks will hold bikes, golf bags, skis, skateboards and more. A combination of garage storage cabinets and wall hanging systems can eliminate floor clutter, keeping balls, bats, mitts, and hats stored safely away so theyāre available whenever itās game time.
No matter your dadās hobby, a custom PremierGarage floor is the perfect foundation for any garage. With several colors to choose from, it transforms oil-stained, pitted concrete into an easy-care, highly functional space that can withstand whatever dad can dish out. The industrial-grade hybrid polymer blend epoxy floor coating goes on twice as thick as other floor coatings and creates a permanent chemical bond with the concrete. The finish is resistant to spills, including gasoline, acetone, brake and transmission fluid, and other common garage products.
Help create a Fatherās Day gift that every time dad walks into the garage heāll think, āWhat a wonderful Fatherās Day!ā

Anticipatory GriefYet Moments of Joy for Caregivers
By Diane stReveR anD Celia gRuzalsKi FoR Our plaCe
Individuals with Alzheimerās or dementia face progressive stages in their disease. Through each of these stages, the caregiver experiences loss and what is called anticipatory grief - grieving that doesnāt occur all at once, as in a sudden death, but bit by bit, over time. Itās important to be aware of the changes that will take place. However, there is no typical time frame associated with each stage.
Stage 1: Individuals face common issues that come along with aging: difficulty finding the right words, taking more time to learn new things, and needing reminders about appointments or plans.
Stage 2: Cognition is still sharp, but distress can make an individual seem threatened and rigid. They thrive on routine and like to keep life moving as it always has. They may get possessive about relationships or belongings, yet theyāre still able to engage socially.
Stage 3: Focusing on the moment at hand, an individual might not be aware of safety concerns or changing abilities. They have a hard time following conversations and remembering details, but they do still recognize body language and tone of voice. They may start hiding belongings as they become more suspicious of others, and have trouble with time and place, reverting back to the past in their lives.
Stage 4: Reactions are based on the senses; an individual may no longer recognize friends and family, but can react based on how people smell, look, sound, and move. They donāt realize when they may be in danger, so safeguarding the environment is critical.
Stage 5: Fine motor skills have become limited, although these individuals do have some use of their hands. Guiding movements, providing structure to the day, and keeping them safe from harm is key to reducing risks.
Stage 6: In this phase, individuals are nearing the end of life. There are still moments when they are alert and responsive, recognizing familiar voices, touches, smells, and tastes. Create moments of connection and let individuals know that itās ok to let go, as they may feel they need permission to move on.
Anticipatory grief can feel like being on a roller coaster. You may feel sad on some days, and not experience grief on others. You may feel guilty over your shifting emotions. This is normal, and it doesnāt mean you love the person any less. Acknowledge your own feelings of grief as you see changes in your loved one. You may want to seek out a support group, to share with others your feelings and discuss ways to handle emotions. Gratitude journaling can change your focus to positive experiences you have shared. Talk together about wishes for advanced care and funeral arrangements. Recognize those moments of joy, as painful as they may be, as the opportunity to connect emotionally and spiritually.
When my mother was in her last stages of Alzheimerās, a poem began to form in my head, and as the days passed, I realized I was expressing my grief on paper. āI Thought There Would Always Be Timeā was the title of the poem, which was shared at her celebration of life service. We canāt anticipate our remaining time to be together, so create moments of joy and sharing when you can. Our Place is a 501C3 non-profit organization. For more information go to www.OurPlaceTN.org. Get Up āGet Out On the Water!
By patRiCK BoRing
Youāve probably noticed the weather outside is gorgeous. The air is getting warmer, and so is the water. Boating season isnāt just around the corner. Itās here. And thereās nothing quite like it. You can already feel the wind in your hair and picture the cool spray of the water as it flashes and glimmers in the sunshine, not to mention the gentle back and forth rocking in the lakeās embrace. Itās not a question of if youāll take your boat out on the water, but when.
More than that, when you take your boat out, will it be only after spending precious minutes detailing said boat, removing its cover by hand, cleaning up the spider and bird leavings that have accumulated over the months, all while knowing youāll have to wrestle said cover back on later? Or will you cut out all that unnecessary to-do completely, spending your precious time as intended ā out on the lake?
Taking your boat out really can be that easy ā that is if you have a Touchless Boat Cover System from Lifetime Docks, LLC.
Hereās the concept: invest in a garage for your boat that protects your craft like your home garage protects your car. Be prepared to cover and uncover your boat in 30 seconds without laying a finger on it, all at the touch of a button. Be prepared to get the full value out of your boating experience ā to not be weighed down into staying home because the struggle just to launch your boat isnāt worth the effort. Be prepared to slather on that high SPF sunscreen āyouāll need it as you find yourself wanting to get on the water more and more all thanks to the quality boating experience our Touchless Boat Cover System provides.
The Touchless Cover is now backed by an industry leading 7-year warranty (new for 2023!). Youāll sleep well at night knowing this investment will give you years of problem-free service. If any issues arise ā Lifetime Docks will be there to help!
Donāt wait now! Itās time to wake up, get up, and get out on the water. Itās time to invest in your Touchless Boat Cover System, cutting out all the wasted time spent fighting with covers manually. And itās time to call us at Lifetime Docks, LLC to reserve your system before the crowd truly descends.

Mary Ann Ruppert RIDE TO REMEMBER
June 25- July 19
Dr. Charlie Barnard and his wife Teresa will depart from Wildwood Baptist Church on June 25th for a 9000-mile motorcycle ride up the Alaskan Canadian Highway to raise funding for Our PLACE Adult Day Center programs and needed expansion space, as well as for a handicap transport vehicle for SCHAS (Senior Citizen Home Assistance Services). Together these two organizations provide support for over 3,500 seniors who are experiencing difficulties with maintaining sustainment functions or suffering from the effects of Dementia related diseases.
The ride is named in honor of Mary Ann Ruppert who was an educator in the Knoxville City Schools and was instrumental in starting their Special Education Program. Mary Ann passed away from Alzheimerās in 2020 and is survived by her husband Mike.
You can become a sponsor for as little as a penny a mile. All sponsors receive an event T-shirt. Any donation will help these two non-profits. Please consider supporting The Mary Ann Ruppert Ride to Remember. The ride will be kicked off with a Departure Lunch and Blessing of the Bikers on June 25th at Wildwood Baptist Church in Maryville at 11:30 am. It will end with a return dinner at First Baptist Church of Tellico Village on July 19th at 5 pm. Entertainment and discussion of events will occur at the dinner. Dinner costs are $10 per person for non-sponsors. Tickets can be obtained at both churches.
If you would like to contribute, checks may be made payable to Our Place TN or SCHAS. Checks to Our Place may be mailed to Our Place, 103 Cheeyo Way, Loudon, TN 37774. The first half of the year has certainly been interesting in the landscape. Some of your plants are looking great, some are not. I finally gave in and removed a boxwood and two enormous loropetalums in my yard, but everything else seems to be recovering. Hopefully your yard is getting back to normal as well!
So, what is there to do in your yard in June? A lot! But letās talk first about one of my passions: pollinator plants. Our focus on clearing land and establishing lawns over the past few decades has not done any favors for our environment, and there is a high cost to pay. More than 30% of the food we eat every day relies on or benefits from pollinators, including the most nutritious foods. In addition, coffee and chocolate depend on them, so without our pollinators, we would be hungry, malnourished, and cranky!
Who are our pollinators? Primarily bees, but not just the ones you know about. While honeybees and bumble bees are the best known, there are more than 4,000 bee species native to North America. The vast majority are solitary bees where the female makes her nest alone. Most are not aggressive and donāt sting. Honeybees are the primary workers, responsible for 80% of flowering plants. Bumble bees are also crucial because they pollinate both flowers and agricultural crops. Unfortunately, honeybees and bumble bees are facing extinction risk.
Bees arenāt the only pollinators, however. Butterflies, moths, beetles, birds, bats, and even flies can serve as secondary pollinators. I could write this entire article about the importance of caring for them, but I donāt have room. Instead, letās focus on what you can do to help.
The number one thing is to plant pollinator friendly flowers. Native sun perennials are your best bet, but you also need overlapping and sequential blooms. More is better, but even a small bed can attract a host of pollinators!
The second thing for you to do is provide a nest site. Leave patches of bare earth, brush piles, and nesting blocks. Plant host plants such as butterfly weed for eggs and caterpillars, and provide a bowl of wet sand or a shallow basin with pebbles as a water source.
Lastly, protect them from chemicals. Use as few as possible, and use them wisely. Do you really need to spray a bug that has a short life cycle? Please educate yourself about good bugs and bad bugs, and always use the least toxic product first.
Now letās go over what
Our Customers Say It Best.
āOutstanding
you should do this month.
Ā» Do frequent walk-arounds. Plants are stressed and therefore more vulnerable to disease and insects. If you catch problems when they are just beginning, you have a better chance of getting them under control. Keep in mind that the best treatment for most cold issues is time.
Ā» The cool, wet weather we have had created a good breeding ground for fungus, so watch for it during your walk-around and begin treating at the first sign. Neem is a good starting point chemical, but some plants may require something stronger.
Ā» You can prune the winter damage from shrubs now if you havenāt already done so. You can also cut back spent bulbs, the stalks of spring bloomers (iris, peonies, etc.), and annuals that are getting leggy. If you want to reduce the size of your spring blooming trees and shrubs, prune soon after they stop blooming so they have not set bud yet.
Ā» Maintain your container plants. Most will need to be deadheaded, cut back, cleaned up (donāt let the spent blooms settle down into the container), and fertilized weekly.
Ā» How are your vegetables? Many are off to a slow start, and that is because the soil has not warmed up enough. Be vigilant in watching for trouble in the form of insects and disease, and treat before it gets out of hand. Splashing water is a quick way to spread disease, so always use soaker hoses or water at the base of the plant. Mulch will help. Call us if you have problems.
Ā» Finally, donāt panic if you havenāt planted yet. There is still time!
We are still getting regular deliveries, although the high demand for plants this season has made it harder to keep up. Stop by or give us a call if you have questions. Let us help you have a beautiful yard!

āMy husband and I knew weād be moving to TN for our retirement, so we decided to come visit in 2020 and check it out. We did āDiscovery Toursā and toured the Parade of Homes and we fell in love with Tellico Village. We had a home design we loved and needed a builder to make our vision a reality. We bought a lot in the Kahite neighborhood and began researching builders. We needed a builder with a quality reputation, one we could trust and work with as we were living in IL until our dream house was completed. We talked with multiple builders, but Keener Homes was the right fit for us. We wanted a builder who cared about the process and the quality of his product. We wanted a team that focused on attention to detail, had excellent communication skills and most importantlyā¦really wanted to work with us. Keener Homes is all that and more. Keener Homes may be a small operation, but we really wanted a builder that didnāt mass produce homes. Kit, Derek Miller (Construction Manager), and Krisha Loud (Office Manager) run a tight ship and really care about their clients. These wonderful people became our first TN friends!
Kit really took the time to explain the build process and provided a binder to us with general building timelines and a supplier list. The suppliers Kit partners with were every bit as professional and caring as Kit. They spent time with us to discuss their available products and really helped with the decision-making processā¦. And we all know there are hundreds of decisions to be made! Kit only uses highly reputable partners who also care about their product (framers, painters, electricians, plumbers, etc.) and who have longevity in the business.
Because we were living in another state during our build, Kit and his team provided regular updates and pictures so we were kept informed. If questions or issues arose (on either end), weād jump on a call and talk it over. There were several times when Kit or Derek would contact us just to ādouble checkā something to prevent downstream issues. We greatly appreciated this communication. There were several times we couldnāt visualize something, but we trusted Kitās experience and let him make up our minds. Kit never let us down. Our outdoor kitchen is a prime example! Kit pretty much had free reign to design this area on our back porch. I welcome anyone to come look at how it turned out!
Our build experience with Keener Homes went as smoothly as it could because of the knowledge, professionalism, and talent of this Keener team. Keener Homes brought our vision to fruition and we cannot express how much we love our home. It feels like resort living!
Thank You Kit, Derek and Krisha for making our home the special place it is!

UT Plant of the Month
Hyacinth Bean Vine: A āOne Size Fits Mostā Plant
By whitney hale, eDuCation CooRDinatoR at the ut gaRDens, Knoxville
Truthfully, I laughed when I read an excerpt from historical gardening expert Peggy Cornettās book, āJeffersonās Vines of Summer: Beauties and Beasts,ā where she wrote, āAsk any of Monticelloās gardeners and they will tell you that enough has been said about the Hyacinth Bean.ā Here I am, though, telling you more about it.
The vineās purple stems, leaf veins, flowers and seed pods place it firmly on my list of purple favorites in the garden.
Hyacinth bean goes by many names including Indian bean and Egyptian bean, which provide clues about its origin. Most of the Lablab purpureus plant is edible when prepared correctly, and it has been utilized as a food crop for centuries in Africa and Asia. It arrived in Europe by the early 1700s and gained popularity. Ever the plantsman, Thomas Jefferson is thought to have grown it in the early 1800s at Monticello.
In the United States, this plant has been primarily used ornamentally since the early 19th century. Climbing trellises or spreading along the ground, this vine is a fast-growing annual in much of the Southeast but can be hardy in zones 10 and 11. The shape of the seed pods and flowers indicate that it is in the Fabaceae family (also known as Leguminosae) and is nitrogen-fixing. In fact, itās a great cover crop because it provides nitrogen through fixation and leaf decay, and its extensive root system improves the soilās structure. Farmers may like this plant, too, because it can be used as forage for cattle and goats.
Purple hyacinth bean vine can be easily grown from seed after fear of frost has passed, in full sun and moist, well-draining soil. Protect young plants from deer and provide adequate support for the vines that can be up to 25 feet long. Flowers are white, blue, or purple, and the seed pods can range from white to red or even dark brown depending on the variety chosen. Seeds for purple flowering varieties are easily found in mail order catalogs and in seed displays at garden centers in early spring. Staking against a trellis or archway, similar to what has been displayed in our UT Gardens, Knoxville, Kitchen Garden, makes for a dramatic moment in any garden while also providing shade in the heat of summer. Look for purple hyacinth bean vine growing this summer at the UT Gardens, Knoxville. There, and in your own home landscape, youāll be mesmerized by the buzz of bees and scent of the flowers in late summer through early fall should you choose to add this purple people pleaser to your garden.
The UT Gardens includes plant collections located in Knoxville, Crossville and Jackson, Tennessee. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the UT Gardens are part of the UT Institute of Agriculture. The Gardensā mission is to foster appreciation, education, and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs and research trials. The Gardens are open during all seasons and free to the public.
If your closet is too crowded and disorganized, you probably have several blouses or shirts that you never see because they are crammed in the corner or laying on the floor underneath other clothes. Well, if that shirt could write you a letter, this is probably what it would write:
āI am really a nice-looking shirt. I fit you well. You used to love me, and you wore me to some of your most important meetings or dinner with friends. We looked so beautiful together.
However, as time went by, I wasnāt the center of attention. I was pushed further and further back in your closet. I am feeling unloved and disrespected. You never look at me because you canāt see me! Itās dark and cramped back in the corner. And yes, I know Iām wrinkled, but you would be too if you were living in this crowded space where the other hangers are constantly stabbing me.
You are to blame for my condition. If you just took the time to give me -- and yourself āa new, organized closet system we could both be happy. I can just see a new custom closet where I have glorious space to be my best self. I wouldnāt be a wrinkled mess and you would love me again.
Please, call The Tailored Closet of Knoxville and set up a free consultation. They can design a new closet and show you a 3D rendering of the design so youāll know exactly where I will be placed. The sooner you call the sooner you and I can be together again!
PS. A pair of your sandals and a pair of great-fitting black pants feel the same way.ā
If you are wasting time every morning trying to find missing clothing items, you didnāt need your shirt to tell you that you need a new organized closet system. From a closet to the family mudroom, or the garage to a home office, The Tailored Closet can help organize every room in the home.

HAVE TINNITUS? HEARING AIDS MAY HELP
By BoB FeRRaRo h i s
If you experience the sounds of ringing in your ear ā called tinnitus ā you are not alone. In fact, one in ten individuals worldwide are affected by this condition, which can range from mild annoyance to debilitating in nature. The International Hearing Society (IHS) reminds the public that hearing aids may offer a solution.
According to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, āTinnitus is not a disease. It is a symptom that something is wrong in the auditory system, which includes the ear, the auditory nerve that connects the inner ear to the brain, and the parts of the brain that process sound.
Something as simple as a piece of earwax blocking the ear canal can cause tinnitus. But it can also be the result of a number of health conditions, such as:
Ā» Noise-induced hearing loss
Ā» Ear and sinus infections
Ā» Diseases of the heart or blood vessels
Ā» MĆ©niĆØreās disease
Ā» Brain tumors
Ā» Hormonal changes in women
Ā» Thyroid abnormalities
Tinnitus is sometimes the first sign of hearing loss in older people. It also can be a side effect of medications. More than 200 drugs are known to cause tinnitus when you start or stop taking them.ā
Hearing care providers, including many hearing aid specialists, may be able to offer solutions for those with mild or moderate tinnitus. Some hearing aids offer features that can help mask the continuous or occasional noises of tinnitus. If an individualās tinnitus warrants it, hearing care providers can refer a patient to the right medical professional for evaluation and assistance.
IHS encourages those suffering from tinnitus to seek help from a licensed hearing care provider. More information is also available through the American Tinnitus Association www.ata.org, which runs a help line for those who suffer from tinnitus: 1-800-634-8978.
IHS partner Hearing Health Foundation offers these tinnitus statistics:
Ā» 90 percent of tinnitus cases occur with an underlying hearing loss.
Ā» Tinnitus repeatedly ranks as the number one disability among returning military service members, just ahead of hearing loss.
Ā» 25 million American adults report experiencing tinnitus for five or more continuous minutes in the past year.
Ā» There are no documented cures for tinnitus, but many solutions can help.
Ā» 16 million people seek medical attention for tinnitus annually.
Trained hearing aid specialists play such a vital role in measuring tinnitus, making referrals when needed, and when appropriate, educating patients on how to best manage their tinnitus and provide them with the tools to do so. Tinnitus and hearing loss often go hand-in-hand, though an individual with tinnitus may not realize that they have hearing loss.
In fact, hearing aids can be very helpful in managing tinnitus.
I can vouch for that fact from personal experience. I suffered from a mild to moderate case of tinnitus for many years. Then I got hearing aids with a Tinnitus Masking feature and set them up. Minor results were almost immediate, and after about one year the tinnitus is now completely gone! Results will vary among different sufferers, but if you are one of them you know that any relief is worth it!

World Famous Rifle of āBlack Billā
Walker Returns Home to the Smokies
The Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center is pleased to announce that it has acquired the hunting rifle and accoutrements of āBlack Billā Walker, founder of Walker Valley and subject of many Smoky Mountain legends. The rifle, given the moniker āOlā Deathā by Walker himself, has been in a private collection since the 1930s but was donated to the Heritage Center last month.
The rifle is considered an early Southern Kentucky Rifle and is complete with a period ramrod and shooting accessories, most of which are shown in period-of-use photographs. The powder horn, cap horn, and powder measure are personalized with Walkerās initials and markings.
Randal Pierce, author of Kentucky Rifles of the Great Smoky Mountains, along with noted firearms collector, Ben Barrington, have thoroughly documented the collection of Walker items and photographed them for the Heritage Center. In addition, these gentlemen have graciously agreed to assist in displaying the Walker items at the āTastes of the Smokiesā fundraising event on Saturday, June 3, 2023 at the Heritage Center. This will be the first public display of āOlā Deathā in nearly a century.
The Heritage Center staff plans to put the Walker Collection on permanent display as part of a new gallery that is currently being designed and has an anticipated completion date in 2025. This gallery will also feature the Sam Keller Cabin, which was reconstructed inside the new gallery space by the Barnwood Builders television show and aired as Episode 6 of Season 14.
To see āOlā Deathā in its first public display at the Heritage Center, tickets for the āTastes of the Smokiesā event are on sale now at gsmheritagecenter.org/events-tickets/. Tickets are $125 per person and include the opportunity to sample food and drinks from over a dozen Smoky Mountain eateries, interact with living history demonstrators throughout the Centerās historic village, and enjoy an evening concert by the Drift Boat Cowboys.

THE LOST SEA
By Bo CaRey
About a hundred years ago, a young boy was playing in the woods located between Sweetwater and Madisonville. He came across a hole in the ground and, being a curious lad, crawled in to see what was below. Discovering a huge cavern beneath the surface, he threw mud balls downward, only to hear splashes below. What heād found was the largest underground lake in America⦠and the second largest in the world! Thereās over 13 acres of lake surface, but divers and scientists have found numerous connected caverns and rooms flooded with water.
Today itās The Lost Sea, a tourist attraction to many but also (in my opinion) a very educational and worthwhile visit less than 20 miles from your home. You can take the short walking tour through the cave, where itās a comfy 58 degrees year-round. Stalactites, stalagmites, alleged ancient jaguar tracks, a vintage moonshine still, and traces of Indian remains are observed along the way (okay, those border on sheer tourist stuff but still entertaining). There are accounts that both Cherokee gatherings and Civil War activities took place in the cave.
Usually, a ride across the lake with your guide is included. Glass bottomed boats allow views of massive rainbow trout with a slightly blind condition due to lack of natural sunlight. During my scoutmaster days, Loudon Troop 215 took advantage of the optional Wild Tour, which follows a guide between narrow rock passages, crawling on your belly through a 2-foot tunnel and spending the night in a dank, dark side cavern - all best suit-
album, Even The Sparrow, was named as a finalist for the International Folk Music Awards āAlbum of the Year.ā Music will start around 8:00. Make a reservation for dinner or join us for a drink and a bite from the Pub Menu and just enjoy the music!
Fri. ā June 23 - Friday on the Wilder Patio - Jay Clark
Although Jay Clark went to college for 11.5 years and has a PhD in wildlife ecology, he somehow ended up striking a balance between careers in music & science. A staple in the East Tennessee music scene for more than 20 years, Clark has supplemented his career as a scientist with performing his songs across the Southeast and southern Appalachia. Presently, Jay plays with his band, Jay Clark and the Tennessee Beavers. Music will start around 8:00. Make a reservation for dinner or join us for a drink and a bite from the Pub Menu and just enjoy the music!
Fri. ā June 30 - Friday on the Wilder Patio - Tyler Ramsey
Tyler Ramseyās writing has been compared to Neil Young, Gram Parsons, Bon Iver and Sufjan Stevens. His songs smartly blend elements of rock, Americana and folk, taking the listener on their own meditative, soulful and rewarding journey. Tyler will be performing with his full band on the Granary Stage Saturday, but this will be an intimate solo show on the Wilder Patio with just Tyler. Music will start around 8:00. Make a reservation for dinner or join us for a drink and a bite from the Pub Menu and just enjoy the music!
