Ain 2005. Initially, I was the only employee. I had been in the industry for about 10 years at that time, and I created the company after I realized that things could be done better than I was seeing. My wife, Krista, was a dietician at the time.

“They turned the brown water coming into our house into crystal clear, delicious and refreshing water! Amazing!!”

She started helping me expand Aqua Clear. Her involvement has been invaluable.

All three of our kids, Jonathan, Lydia, and Robert started working in the business over their high school summer vacations. Jonathan initially worked on the installation, then moved into sales, and now is VP of business development. Our daughter, Lydia, majored in Supply Chain Management at UT. She is now managing warehouse marketing, onboarding, and training. Our youngest son, Robert, got involved in his senior year of high school. He loves meeting people, testing their water, and helping change their lives with better water. He is one of the top salespeople in the nation.

In addition to our family, our team has expanded to over 50+ members, and we’ re proud to have served over 10,000 residential and commercial clients.

MV: I know you have a lot of different systems available. In a nutshell, what types of systems do you offer?

David: We are a water brokerage company. We do sales, service, and installation for all makes and models of water treatment equipment. We do city water, well water, and commercial systems. In addition to homes, we are in coffee shops, restaurants, hospitals for their surgery rooms.

– D. Reed

MV: What areas do you service?

David: We service all of East Tennessee right now. We are in the process of expanding into the Nashville area in Middle Tennessee. Right now, we have a great team of approximately 50 employees with about 20 trucks. Our goal is to expand nationwide.

MV: How does your process work?

David: We custom build each system depending on the needs of each home. We begin by having a project supervisor come out to your home. They will inspect your plumbing and your water. They do a full analysis (worth about $300) for no charge. They take into account your wants, needs, and budget to design a system just for you. We then install and service your system. We want to go above and beyond in everything we do. We prep each installation and do the job right. Our technicians are professionals, from their education to the way they dress and present themselves. I feel they are the best in the nation. We currently have over 1,500 5-star reviews for our systems, installations, and service.

MV: What sorts of water improvements have some of your customers reported after having AquaClear install their system?

David: We have customers who reported their eczema improving, more

manageable hair, plumbing, water heaters, and appliances lasting longer. We’ve also had well water customers tell us that the

When May is mentioned, it brings to mind spring flowers, weddings, and graduations. More importantly, May is also the month to remember and honor those who have sacrificed so much for us.

On Sunday, May 12th, we’ll celebrate Mothers, all that they do for their families, and the influence they have in shaping their children’s lives.

A mother’s love is unending and unconditional, sacrificial, patient, protective, and provides comfort and encouragement to her children. It is often said that a mother’s love for her children is a reflection of God’s love for us: it “Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.” (1 Corinthians 13:7) KJV

I know these are perfect descriptions for my mother. I am so grateful to God for blessing me with such a wonderful Mom, and she continues to bless me each and every day.

So let your mom know how much she is appreciated by pampering her on her special day. Everyone at East Tennessee’s Mountain Views wishes all moms a very Happy Mother’s Day!

We should also remember and honor our soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom; let’s show them the respect they deserve, not just on Memorial Day (5/27/24), but every day. “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” John 15:13

David: Glad to! The three components of our “Unbeatable Triple Guarantee are:

3) Our “unbeatable 10-year system warranty”. If for any reason the installed filtration systems are not correctly working, the team at Aqua Clear will fix or replace your entire system absolutely free of charge within 1 year, and the Kinetico®

Stop Just Wishing for More Convenience

In 2017, when the Henrys moved to Tennessee from North Carolina, they were sure to include a few convenient roll-out drawers in the kitchen cabinets of their house when it was being built. They quickly became aware that the limited number of roll-out shelves actually made it more difficult to access the items in the deep lower section of their cabinets. Not big fans of resorting to dropping to their knees on the floor in order to reach items way in the back, they decided that more roll-out shelving would be the best solution.

They had seen ads for Shelf Help, noticing that it was a local company, and gave them a call for a free estimate. After a very positive meeting with the owner of Shelf Help, where they were able to see product samples, discuss solutions for more challenging areas - like cabinets under sinks - and an installation time line, the Henrys were ready to place an order. And what an order it was!

“After Shelf Help gave us an estimate, we were so impressed with them and their product that we immediately ordered more than 40 roll-out shelves,” said Dick Henry. “We decided to install them everywhere there were cabinet shelves in the entire house.

“We can’t say enough great things about Shelf Help, their products, their timeliness, or their installation. We are very happy campers!!”
- The Henrys

We ordered them for the kitchen, the laundry, the butler’s pantry, our rec room, and the master bath, which has his and her sink areas. We also ordered shelves for under the kitchen, laundry, and bathroom sinks where we never thought we could have them. Shelf Help can come up with a solution for anywhere you want roll-outs.”

The Henrys were able to have their practical and useful roll-out shelving installed in just a couple of weeks - as promised! The roll-out drawers fit right into any home’s existing cabinets or pantry, providing easier access, better organization, and maximum use available storage space. Shelf Help was able to complete the installation in less than a day so that disruption was limited. Excited to have their cabinet access and function restored, the Henrys could not be happier with their Shelf Help roll-out shelving. Jane Henry reflects, “Never a day goes by that we don’t mention how glad we are to have the many roll-outs. The quality of the shelves is outstanding, it can’t be beat!”

If you are experiencing challenges reaching items in your cabinets, Shelf Help has the understanding and know-how to evaluate, design, measure, and professionally install solutions tailored to your needs and budget. Locally owned and operated, let Shelf Help make the most of your home’s kitchen, bath, or pantry storage space.

Helping Persecuted Christians in Nigeria

Over the past month, Nigeria has experienced at least 26 terrorist attacks by Jihadist extremists, killing over 160 innocent people, many just because they were Christians.* If one is not killed, their homes and crops are burned. In December, over 200 Christians were martyred. We can’t imagine what this kind of persecution is like here in the United States. Praise God for our First Amendment rights to practice our faith in Jesus without fear. *Source: TheReligionOfPeace.com.

Our pastor, David Talley, just visited Nigeria to bring food to these devastated families and to train Nigerian pastors and missionaries to be bold in the face of these dangers. Little did he know he would be called on to comfort and preach to the families who have lost loved ones to the Jihadist persecution.

The Good Shepherd Center, located in Madisonville, TN takes its name from King David’s Divine portrait of The Good Shepherd, who cares for the 99 + 1, who comforts, protects, guides, and provides for His flock, who prepares a table for those under His watchful care. GSC volunteers and staff strive to model this portrait to ultimately be a blessing for better times ahead when they themselves can give and bless others.

The Good Shepherd Center is a nonprofit, volunteer driven organization, established to help needy children, families, individuals, and veterans obtain adequate food, clothing, and other essential needs, including at times, emergency medical and utility services, as well as other benefits which may be available through public and private sources to help achieve a better more productive life. Good Shepherd volunteers, driven by respect and dignity, embody our core values, and every donation, whether money, food, or clothing is transformed into a stepping-stone.

But there’s more – we listen. People need to be heard and often the waters are rising for them and while basic needs are being met, the struggle is daily and often suffered in silence. Having an ear to just listen and not judge can be as important as a box of groceries.

GSC supports nearly 500 families monthly. Most of the food that is distributed is purchased. Donations are received from local stores and produce from local farmers is donated in season, but our steady source is purchased. Those shepherds who faithfully volunteer at Good Shepherd know what goes into those food boxes, and it makes you want to cry to see how little people are trying to feed their families with.

We are excited to announce the 2024 fund raising event called Kickoff to Fight Hunger on August 24 at Anderson Ridge Center, starting at 5:30 pm. Our guest speaker is Bob Kesling, the Voice of the Vols. Music will be provided by Diamond J. A reception, dinner, exciting guest speaker, and an auction promise to make this a memorable evening, supporting a great organization.

More information, purchase and sponsorship opportunities and costs will be provided on the Good Shepherd website www.goodshepherdcenter.net, on Facebook or by calling

The trip was planned months ago for the purpose of dedicating a new building that will house 160 orphans and children, many left homeless and parentless from these senseless Jihad attacks. The building was actually dedicated to Pastor Dave’s parents who started this work many years ago.

Back home, we at First Baptist Church of Tellico Village have a very strong Missions program. We believe in the Great Commission of sharing the Gospel of Jesus to every corner of the world. We livestream our Sunday morning Worship Service beginning at 10:30 AM. If you would like to watch, simply go to FBCTV.org and click on the livestream link. We also serve a wonderful dinner every Wednesday evening and guests are welcome. Call the Church office for details at 865-408-0110.

If you are looking for a church home, come and worship with us as Pastor Dave teaches us from the Bible and shares the Words of Jesus. Enjoy a worshipful experience with our music and worship team that includes choir and orchestra. Jesus commanded us to go and make disciples and we take that charge quite seriously. We offer several adult Bible study options at 9:00 AM, as well as HomeGroups throughout the week. Sunday Morning Worship Service at 10:30 AM.

We all wrestle with important conversations around our wishes and directives in the event of serious illness or death. However, having those discussions are critical and will relieve others from the anxiety and burden of making decisions at a difficult time. Gabrielle Blake, from Elder Law in Lenoir City, recently spoke at the Our PLACE Caregiver Support group about three documents that are essential to have in place for you and your loved one.

The first document is a Last Will and Testament, so that the probate court is not sorting out your affairs in the absence of a Will. An Executor is appointed who will work with your lawyer or accountant. Each state has different requirements of a Will, so it may be more expedient to have a Will written in TN if that is your major residence. The second document that is essential is a Durable Power of Attorney for Finances and gives the appointee the ability to financially move money for long term care or conservatorship. The third document is an Advanced Directive and Appointment of a Health Care Power of Attorney, a person who knows your wishes for long term care or your “line in the sand” in terms of end-of-life options. This is probably the most difficult conversation to have with your loved one. In the case of a terminal illness, do you choose full medical treatments, limited interventions, or comfort measures, focused on your quality of life? Be sure those individuals you appoint for these roles know that they have been given those responsibilities and are comfortable with carrying out your wishes. All of these documents should be reviewed once a year, stored in a file that is easy to locate, and the executor/power of attorney designees should know where they are found. Also include passwords to your computer and any financial accounts that may be needed.

Our Moment of Joy individual this month is Ray, who has participated at Our PLACE for one year, 3 times a week. He and Kathleen moved to TN 16 years ago, after working for Dow Corning and Honeywell. Ray was President of both the HOA and POA here in Tellico Village and was instrumental in encouraging the construction of independent living options at Premiere Residence and the Neighborhood. He recognized that people were not prepared for life changes, and spoke at churches on “Aging by Design, Not by Default,” which led to the formation of the “Stay in TV” initiative. At first Ray was not sure he would be comfortable with Our PLACE, but quickly realized he would make friends there. Kathleen is able to go to appointments, read, or just be in the moment,” to do something or nothing, while she knows Ray is safe and engaged during his day. Ray always has a smile on his face and enjoys greeting and talking with his friends at Our PLACE. He is especially happy conversing with the construction supervisor while the expansion is taking place. His Moment of Joy came when he could help solve a printer glitch in the office at Our PLACE!

The Our PLACE expansion continues to move forward and is expected to be completed by the middle of May or early June. The extra square footage will enable us to add more participants to our program. Please call Sarah Martin, Director, at 865-657-7222 to discuss if your loved one would be a candidate for the program. Please join us at the Gala for Our PLACE on Sunday, May 19th at the Yacht Club. This exciting evening will include a wonderful dinner, a silent auction, and music; all proceeds go to our Phase II Capital Campaign. See the ad on this page to make reservations!

Our PLACE is an independent, 501(c)3 nonprofit that seeks to improve quality of life by providing a day program of care, social interaction, and therapeutic activities in a safe and nurturing environment for adults living with Alzheimer’s or other dementia-related diseases. Important Conversations for Caregivers-
1

If you find yourself comparing your smile to others whose smiles exhibit beautiful, straight, white teeth, then perhaps it’s time you discovered just how easy it can be to achieve a whiter, brighter smile. After all, how many of those people whose smiles you envy were actually born with that perfect smile? Probably not many.

Let’s consider teeth straightening first. Did you know that there is a procedure – in fact, the most advanced teeth straightening system available anywhere – that has already helped more than fourteen million people achieve straighter, more natural looking smiles? Called Invisalign, these transparent aligners incrementally adjust your teeth without the use of wire braces.

Invisalign is the world’s most advanced clear aligner. By combining 20+ years of research and data from fourteen million smiles, you can trust Invisalign to deliver the smile that you deserve.

Invisalign is a modern, fully digitized experience designed to help you achieve the smile you want, the way you want it. Unlike other competitive clear aligners, Invisalign aligners use a proprietary SmartTrack®

The Clear Alternative to Braces

material that offers treatment times that are up to 50% faster. Patients report that Invisalign aligners fit and feel better. Also, innovations in the Invisalign procedure move more smiles, with greater predictability and control than competitive aligners.

Perhaps what you will appreciate most about the Invisalign system is that it is administered and supervised by your family dentist and not some third-party dentist or orthodontist who will recommend your treatment without ever having met you. After all, who knows you better than your family dentist?

HELPING YOUR AGING PARENTS

The passage of time can catch you offguard – years fly by and suddenly you realize that your parents need help when it comes to managing their finances. It happened to me just this year. My parents went from living independently to suddenly needing my help managing their financial lives, and I found myself thrust into that role very quickly. It reminded me that there are a lot of moving parts to consider that I want to share with you. Whether that time for you is imminent or somewhere in the unknown future, a critical first step is simply having a conversation with your parents about their finances. Make sure you are covering these topics:

Bill paying: Do they have enough current income to pay their bills, and do they have a process to make sure payments don’t accidentally get missed? This is especially important for annual life insurance or long-term care insurance premiums. Policies they have been paying for years could lapse due to non-payment. (I literally had a client 2 weeks ago tell me that her parents are in the early stages of Alzheimer’s and had assured her they have LTC insurance in place…until they made the earth-shattering realization that her parents had accidentally stopped paying the premium 18 months ago and the policy had

What does Memorial Day mean to you? Is it a long awaited 3-day weekend? Is it time for an out-of-town trip or a time reserved for parties and picnics? When trying to find Memorial Day remembrance ceremonies in my area, I could only find concerts and barbeques. I wonder if our children truly understand what Memorial Day is all about.

According to https://www.govinfo.gov/features/memorial-day - these are the facts:

Memorial Day commemorates all the women and men who have died while in military service and will be observed this year on May 29, 2023, the last Monday in May as designated by Federal law (36 U.S.C. 116).

Begun in the late 1860’s as Decoration Day, spring flowers were distributed at graves to honor those fallen in the Civil War. By the end of the 19th century, ceremonies were being held in cities across the country. In 1966, the Federal Government declared Waterloo, New York, the official birthplace of Memorial Day. (Source: Department of Veterans Affairs ) Public Law 106-579, signed into law December 28, 2000, designated 3:00 p.m. (local time) on Memorial Day each year as the ‘‘National Moment of Remembrance” and created the White House Commission on the National Moment of Remembrance.

According to the American Heritage Dictionary, “Memorial” is defined as: mə-môr'ē-əl noun

» Something, such as a monument or holiday, intended to celebrate or honor the memory of a person or an event.

» That which preserves the memory of something; anything designed or adapted to serve as a reminder of a person, an event, or a fact or facts of any kind belonging to past time, as a record, a monument, an inscription, a custom, a periodical observance, etc.

» A written statement of facts or a petition presented to a legislative body or an executive.

lapsed. This stuff DOES happen in real life.)

Do they have critical legal documents in place? We all think of a will as important, but do they have a financial power of attorney that will allow someone to act in their place if they are incapacitated? If you don’t have a financial POA and they become incapacitated (like a stroke, for example) you’ll have to go to court to be granted that financial power, which is both emotionally difficult and expensive. How about their healthcare directives and a healthcare power of attorney? You’ll need that too.

If they do have long term care insurance to help pay for their care later in life, go ahead and read the policy to see when they’re eligible for benefits. Many plans pay for inhome care, so don’t miss out on possible benefit payments by waiting too long. If they don’t have long term care insurance, then it’s good to know what your financial responsibility might be in the future or start reading up on Medicaid rules to help them navigate that maze of rules.

Next up, are their IRA beneficiary designations up to date? Keep in mind that beneficiary designation forms override the terms of the will, so they are extremely important. Additionally, there are critical tax consequences when IRA accounts are passed to the next generation without properly completed beneficiary forms. Let’s not give any more of your parents’ hard-earned money to the IRS than we have to!

Are their accounts titled in such a way that the intent of the will would be circumvented? For instance, if your mom has a joint bank account with your sister, your sister

will own the entire account at your mom’s passing, no matter what the will says.

Now let’s make sure you can actually find everything if and when they are physically incapacitated and need your help: Do you know where their legal documents are kept (especially that financial POA)? How about their bank and investment accounts, as well as which companies their insurance is with? Envision a moment where you can’t ask them any more questions, and make sure you have a clear course of action ready to go. You might have to pick up their financial baton

Great facts; but what does it mean to you? Will you remember - and honor - the sacrifices so many of our soldiers made for our country? While Memorial Day is designed to remember those who lost their lives during battle, all of our veterans have sacrificed.

Some experienced the direct loss of a battle buddy standing or sitting right next to them. They too have left something of themselves on the battlefield. So many have paid the ultimate price for our freedom. Yes, OUR freedom. Some continue to pay carrying those memories. I’ve heard people say that those we’ve lost would want us to live our lives without survivor’s guilt. Being happy and moving forward doesn’t mean we forget our brothers and sisters.1

We will never forget, and we should take time to remember and be thankful for the lives we get to live and the freedoms we enjoy but so often take for granted.

Take your kids and your grandkids to a Veteran

Memorial and read the names engraved upon it. These are not just made-up names. Each one represents a real person, a father/mother, a brother/sister, an uncle/aunt, a son/ daughter, or a grandfather/grandmother who never got the chance to take any more vacations or attend any more barbeques. Make sure future generations never forget and never take our freedom for granted.1

So, on this Memorial Day, while we’re fellowshipping with friends and putting mustard on our hotdogs, I hope each one of us takes a moment away to be grateful for why we have our freedom, and with dignity and respect, remember the fallen.

Spring floral fashion trends

This season there are many of ways to wear pretty florals without looking like you’re wearing your grandmother’s sofa! Whether you choose to wear the new patterns of floral on the top or bottom, the large scale patterns are a modern take on the sweet, romantic look of flowers.

Used mainly on the top, soft florals are romantic and floating... printed on the soft, flowy fabrics to emphasize the airy appeal of softness. Floral bottoms will be on a more substantial fabric, lending themselves to a bolder, brighter color palette to pair back with all the glorious shades of solid tops available for this season... orchids, yellows, shades of pink and green, as well as the ever so popular red and navy... whichever color you choose is sure to “POP” with those floral bottoms!

If you’re feeling especially bold, an all-over floral dress makes a big statement. The feminine pattern is always perfect for spring and summer events... think weddings, Mother’s Day and graduations!

Spring 2024... a glorious season all around us, complementing it perfectly will be your spring wardrobe of all the beautiful blossom prints!

Homemade Sandwiches, Soups, and Desserts in Madisonville

Looking for a healthy, new place to eat? Madisonville recently welcomed a fun new restaurant on Highway 411 – and they even do catering!

It is called The Soup Kitchen. They feature desserts, sandwiches, and over 200 recipes for healthy homemade soups that have been handed down and enhanced over 45 years.

This month, we had the opportunity to speak with Vicki Hawkins, who, along with her husband, Alan, owns The Soup Kitchen in Madisonville. Mountain Views: Tell us a little about yourself and why you started The Soup Kitchen in Madisonville.

Vicki: Actually, The Soup Kitchen started in Oak Ridge over 45 years ago. We just celebrated its anniversary on April 11! My husband and I recently opened the Madisonville location. The Soup Kitchen is sort of in my blood. My brother owns both the Knoxville and the Alcoa restaurants – Knoxville for over 20 years. It was also very special to my mom. She made a lot of good friends at that restaurant.

I grew up in Knoxville and lived in Madisonville for 25 years. My husband and I recently moved to Tellico Plains. I was the Children’s Minister at First Baptist Church Madisonville for 15 years and I felt the call to do something different where I was able to own a business, enjoy the customers and give back to the community all at the same time.

MV: What types of food do you have available?

Vicki: Because of the name, sometimes people think we only have soup – but that is not the case. Our soups are awesome! We have over 200 recipes for homemade soups. However, we also specialize in homemade breads; we carry 5 homemade rolls and sandwich breads every day (including Mexican and regular cornbread) plus specialty homemade breads. Our

I really enjoy serving and working with people, and The Soup Kitchen gives me that opportunity. I have even been able to employ some of my former youth ministry kids. I can give them the flexibility they need to work within their school hours.

sandwiches receive great wordof-mouth. Our top seller is a grilled cheese sandwich with either a cup or bowl of soup, chips, and a pickle for $6.99 for the cup and $7.99 for the bowl. For those with a sweet tooth, we also feature homemade desserts – all from original recipes. The most popular desserts are our carrot cake and our coconut pie.

MV: What are your hours?

Vicki: Monday through Friday, 11am –7pm. We also cater.

Step 3: Rinse and Dry Utilize a hose with a spray nozzle to thoroughly rinse the floor. Begin at the highest point at the back of the garage, as the floor naturally slopes towards the driveway. Be mindful of limiting water splashes on wooden components under cabinets. Direct the hose towards the middle from the back and sides, and then out the door. To expedite drying and ensure no residual puddles remain, employ a floor squeegee (18 or 24 inches for efficiency) or a clean street broom. Follow the same back-and-sidesto-middle technique. Remove the plastic baggies from the garage door sensors to complete the process.

If you’ve yet to install a PremierGarage floor, consider its array of benefits:

» Enhances the resale value of your home

» Improves safety with slip, impact, and heat resistance, while brightening the area with increased light reflectivity

» Expands the utility of your garage, whether as a children’s play area, an exercise room, or a hobby nook

Fear not, for cleaning it is a breeze. While renowned for its durability and resistance to slips and stains, a PremierGarage floor coating, like any other surface, requires regular cleaning to maintain its allure. Mastering the art of garage floor care ensures lasting functionality and satisfaction with your investment. Step 1: Clear Away Loose Debris - Start by clearing the garage floor of any items, allowing for full exposure. Sweep or vacuum the floor to eliminate dirt, sand, or other debris. Ensure thorough cleaning under cabinets, workbenches, or appliances. Before proceeding to step two, shield the garage infrared door sensors with small plastic baggies to prevent moisture. Step 2: Scrub the Surface - The most effective method for cleaning is to use a mop. Opt for a heavy-duty cotton mop, and consider using a rolling bucket for convenience, as you’ll need to rinse the mop section by section. Exercise caution to prevent excess water accumulation, as it can lead to slippery conditions. For cleaning solutions that

When people think of owls, they usually think of them always being big birds. While three types of native owls in Tennessee are big, such as the barn owl, great horned owl, and barred owl, we do have a smaller native owl known as the Eastern Screech owl. Another owl called the saw-whet owl does pass through Tennessee from time to time, but it’s not often seen, and it’s even smaller than the screech owl. Screech owls are

about the size of our American robins.

Although it doesn’t seem like there are many around, there are more around us than we realize. Most of the time they are in locations where humans walk all around them but never notice the little owl peeking from their tree cavity. Their small size and camouflage make it very difficult to find them. However, after years of learning about them and their behaviors, I often see screech owls more than our other Tennessee owls. When I’m out in nature, a big key to locating owls does include looking, but most of the time I find these screech owls by listening. They don’t hoot or sound like a typical owl, but they have several calls. One specific sound almost sounds like a horse whinny; it’s even called a “whinny”.

You may have read about owl boxes in one of my other articles about the barred owls; well, the screech owl is more likely to occupy an owl box than any other species of Tennessee owl. Just make sure if you do want to hang one it is made specifically for a screech owl. They will be very thankful as they live in tree holes year-round and this will help them so much with the ever growing development.

Though wildlife and nature photography hold her heart,
East Tennessee Area Wildlife: SCREECH OWL Photographing the beauty of Tennessee, and the wildlife who call it home.
It’s not often you get to observe a screech owl out of its hole in the daylight, but I ended up very lucky this day. I came across it in a small pine tree on a warmer day in the winter just sleeping away. It also cast a pellet while I was photographing it, which is leftover bones of a meal, but I figured that might be too gross to share!
Screech owls come in two different color “morphs”, which are either red or gray. The color doesn’t indicate male or female, and it’s just what morph they are born with. However, reds are more common in the east than grays. This is a mated pair peeping out of their tree cavity and preparing to hunt. You can see why it’s easy to walk right by these owls! Most of the time they are in tree cavities close to eye level and still hard to spot. They are often down in their holes but can be seen sitting at their holes close to dusk, or basking in the sun on a warm day, especially in the winter.

Idon’t know about you, but I think I have whiplash after this spring! Those ups and downs made it hard on some of our plants - and on us! Let’s cross our fingers that the craziness is past.

May is one of a gardener’s busiest months, so let’s get started on your to-do list:

» It is critical that you do a good checkup on your yard this month. You need to know how much damage was done by the cold and wind. Tender plants and plants with new growth took quite a hit, so you may need to do some careful pruning. Remember that they are not dead if the branches are flexible! If you need some guidance, please give us a call.

» Look up. Check the trunk and canopies of your trees. Do you see sparse areas, dead or dying branches, woodpecker holes, or mushrooms? Is there sawdust at the base? Are there holes that seem to be too small (toothpick size) for woodpeckers? Do you have oozing areas? All these are signs that your tree could be struggling. If so, you need an arborist, which is basically a tree doctor. Call us for recommendations.

» Look down. Do you have signs of moles or voles? They can be chased off with a repellant. If something is digging, it is likely possums, squirrels, or skunks looking for grubs so apply a grub killer. Do you have brown patches or dead areas in your lawn? All the rain could have caused fungal brown patch.

» Look all around. Check for signs of disease and insects on your plants. So far, we are seeing a lot of fungal infections, azaleas with lace bugs, crepe myrtles with bark scale (another reason to NOT commit crepe murder, as it makes them more susceptible), and laurels with phytophthora root rot. It is easier to treat plants if you catch an outbreak before it becomes an infestation!

» If you are planting this year, get larger trees and shrubs in by the end of June so they can establish root systems before they start battling the heat. It will also behoove you to not postpone planting this year, as we are encountering even more plant shortages.

» Smaller shrubs and ornamentals can be planted throughout the spring and summer but may require a little more attention to help them get established. They are trying to put down roots and grow at the same time. Don’t overcrowd them, and give them a gentle boost with an organic fertilizer regularly.

» Let’s talk about water - because over or under-watering is the number one plant killer. Please remember that sprinkler systems are great for grass and flowers, but they are often inadequate for trees and shrubs. You need to get 1” of water to the roots of larger plants every week. If it gets dry, I drag the hose out to my trees/large shrubs and turn it on just a trickle. I let it run for 20 minutes or so, then move it to the next plant. I strongly suggest you set a timer, as I have turned my yard into a bog a couple of times by leaving the hose going overnight!

It is important to water deeply and less frequently to encourage plants to develop deep roots instead of shallow roots. It is also best to water in the morning. Try to keep the water at soil level instead of overhead. Watering the foliage encourages fungal growth.

» Did you mulch this spring? If not, think about applying a fresh layer or top-dressing. At least go out and take a rake to old mulch to “fluff” it, because it becomes very

compacted during the winter. Mulch adds a neat look and keeps soil temperature and moisture levels stable. It also breaks down and adds nutrients to the soil.

» You can prune spring bloomers once the blooms have faded. Please do some research or give us a call if you need help. Remember that you are doing surgery on the plant, so don’t go out and start whacking!

» Wait until the foliage has died down before cutting back spring bulbs. They are storing energy for next year’s blooms. A little Bulb-tone

» Some of your perennials may need a little assistance as they emerge. Tall plants may need to be staked or caged, and it is easier to do that while the plants are small. You can

One of the oldest Scottish Festivals in the country, the 42nd annual Smoky Mountain Scottish Festival and Games returns Saturday May 18 and Sunday May 19 to the Townsend Visitors Center located at 7906 East Lamar Alexander Parkway.

Festival Organizer, Keith Austin said, “So many East Tennesseeans can trace their roots back to Scotland or Ireland allowing for people to enjoy the rich heritage of this area. From the music of the Appalachian Mountains influenced by Scottish and Irish folk tunes to the enduring presence of Celtic festivals and gatherings, these ancestral roots are deeply woven into the fabric of East Tennessee life.”

Many Scottish settlers were pioneers in Tennessee. Not to mention, the scenic Great Smoky Mountains National Park makes for the perfect backdrop. The lush greenery often reminds visitors of the Scottish Highlands. One of Townsend’s neighboring cities, Maryville, has a prominent college called Maryville College. Founded by an Irishman, its mascot is the Scots. First known as the Highlanders, but that was difficult to write on jerseys, so it was shortened to Scots. Two hundred years later that remains. It doe sn’t just happen to Goldilocks, there’s a lot of di fferent reasons this can be the case, but today we’re going to share with you the conside rations we make when designing furniture for our cl ients. Quality Construction - Kiln dried, solid wood frames will feel more sec ure and last for significantly longer than low-grad e green wood or low plywood that is sometimes even suppleme nted with cardboard on the sides and back. This one is hard to see on a finished piece, but one you can feel and hear when you sit. Traditionally, 8-way hand tied springs are the marker of a high quality seat, but innovations in sinuous spring decks for m odern seats has added an additional way to get a su pportive base without relying on webbing alone. Cushion Construction - Whether you like a soft plush seat or a supportiv e firm one there are options available in down or f iber to give you the comfort level you prefer. In lower qua lity seats it might just be feathers in a form, but quality seats will have at least a 1.8 density foam core that can be enhanced with spr ings, feathers, and/or memory foam that is then wra pped in dacron, tickling, and finished in a cotton case. Knowing whether you like to sit “in” or “on” furniture will help you as well. Anthropometrics - or the physical measurements of a person's size, form, and functional capacities. back, or a piece that does not have an cushion in the back but has a flat taut piece of fabric along the back, will hav e a more supportive and firm back than one with an attached plush cushion. Chest erfield pieces, or one with diamond tufting along t he back and sides, are also known for having a very firm back to maintain the p recise tufting, and are great for spaces you might chat, not watch a 2 hour movie on. Alternatively a lot of modern pieces that look slim and boxy from a glance seem uncomfortabl e can actually feel very nice when constructed with quality cushions and usi ng the right scale for you. When we go to furniture markets at least 3 times pe r year, we sit in thousands of seats and analyze al l of these features, and only will offer our clients upholstery that has met our stand ards in comfort and quality. Do you often find yourself immersed in a chaotic maze of clothes, desperately searching through your closet to assemble an outfit? Perhaps you struggle to locate the perfect pants to match your chosen shirt, or the ideal shoes to complement your trousers. Life can be hectic, but your closet doesn’t have to mirror the chaos. It should serve as a seamless tool, enhancing your daily routine rather than hindering it. A personalized closet, meticulously tailored to your specific needs, brings a sense of order and efficiency, significantly reducing frustration.

When you engage with The Tailored Closet, our team of experts will embark on a journey to your home, where we’ll carefully listen to your requirements and collaborate with you to design a space that seamlessly aligns with your lifestyle. Before scheduling your inhome consultation, take a moment to reflect on these fundamental questions:

1. How much space am I working with? Assessing the dimensions of your available space is paramount. It serves as the foundation for our designers to create the most efficient organizational layout for your closet. Pay special attention to ceiling height, particularly in smaller spaces where maximizing every inch is crucial.

2. What’s my budget? Budget considerations vary depending on the size and features of your closet. A basic configuration comprising hanging rods and shelves typically incurs lower costs compared to integrating cabinets and drawers.

3. Additionally, the choice of finish impacts expenses, with white finishes generally being more budget-friendly than wood grains or darker hues.

4. What attire am I storing? Take inventory of the clothing and accessories that will inhabit your closet. Some individuals prefer to allocate space for shirts, blouses, and pants, while opting to store undergarments elsewhere. Clarifying your storage requirements streamlines the design process and ensures that every item has its designated place.

5. Which accessories and organizers do I require? Delve into the realm of closet accessories, such as jewelry drawers, fold-out ironing boards, and pullout belt racks, to enhance organization and accessibility within your space.

6. What items do I want readily accessible? Consider which items you use most frequently and wish to have easily within reach. Whether it’s showcasing purses or arranging ties, envision how you want your closet to facilitate convenience and aesthetic appeal. These considerations serve as the cornerstone of your custom closet design. Once you’ve outlined your budget, storage preferences, and available space, The Tailored Closet of Knoxville will craft a bespoke system tailored to you and your unique lifestyle, ensuring that every aspect of your closet aligns seamlessly with your needs and preferences. Did you know that Hearing Aids may help you live Longer? Regular use of hearing aids is associated with decreased death rates in U.S. adults with hearing loss. The World Health Organization estimates that by 2050, 7 million people – 1 out of every 14 people – will have hearing loss severe enough to require treatment.

The most common causes of hearing loss are exposure to loud noises and natural age-related degeneration, both of which affect the inner hair cells of the ear. Everyone will develop some degree of hearing loss during their life.

Studies can’t explain why hearing aid use is linked with reduced deaths – it may be because hearing aids help mitigate risk for other conditions such as depression, dementia, and social isolation.

It’s interesting how hearing loss impacts a lot of health outcomes. Regular hearing aid users tend to belong to a higher socio-economic class and have fewer medical conditions. A research team from the National Health and Examination Survey studied 10,000 adults. Out of the 1,700 adults with hearing loss, only 13% used hearing aids regularly. After 10 years, compared to people who had irregularly or never used hearing aids, 24% fewer of the regular hearing aid users had died. That was the case even when taking into account things like income, medical history, and other demographic differences.

According to Dr. Doug Backous, president of the American Academy of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, “It’s probably the most under-screened symptom in a primary care office.” Primary care physicians may not be recommending a hearing specialist to patients as often as needed. On top of that, there remains a great deal of stigma around the use of hearing aids. Many people with hearing loss and communication difficulties are not willing to try hearing aids. They say, “I don’t think I’m there yet” or “I don’t want to look old.” However, in reality, it’s very hard to see the new hearing aids.

With the U.S. population aging and more younger Americans turning to hearing aids, the research may contribute to the data that hearing aids are a protective medical treatment against worsening disease or death.

ne of the most exciting moments of early childhood was when my parents shouted, “Hey boys, who wants to go see the Goat Man, he’s passing through Loudon?” We rushed to a gravel pull-off along Highway 11 to observe a shaggy old man standing beside a huge wagon pulled by a herd of goats. The iron-wheeled wagon was piled 10 feet high with all his belongings, including junk he’d picked up along the roadside. This was Ches McCartney, an itinerant wandering preacher who lived his adult life traveling the highways of the south as a popular rural tourist attraction. He adhered to the messages of his only books, Robinson Crusoe and the Holy Bible. His diet was

primarily goat milk, and each goat had a name. At night he’d throw an old rubber tire on the fire to deter bugs, then go to sleep on the wagon cuddled up with a couple of goats to stay warm. The burnt tire and animal residue contributed to the man smelling simply awful. I remember it well from standing beside him as a “kid” (pun intended).

What led him to live such a life is not certain. Legend has it he had married a carnival knife throwing woman, serving as her shill or near-miss target. When a knife came way too close, he attempted to trade her to a farmer for a herd of 20-30 goats, and the rest is history. Whether that theory is true or not, he then embarked on a career living the life of a goat.

He would sell his roadside “finds” for a few coins to the gawking observers. If a child produced a bottle of coke or pepsi, his star goat would chug the soft drink for the admiring crowds who tipped well for the experience. It was an experience indeed....the likes of which we will never see again.
