Superior Rug Cleaning Service Puts the “Magic” Back into Your Expensive Oriental Rug!
Are you someone who’s handpicked the perfect (and expensive) Oriental rug for your living space, only to wonder over the years if wear and care is tarnishing its eye-catching beauty? Each Oriental rug is unique with a magic all its own, and yours is no exception. If you picked it out, it’s a representation of your particular taste, and if you inherited it, it’s a manifestation of your family’s history. In both cases, it’s a special investment-after all, you’ll never have another rug exactly like it. These rugs are each unique expressions of pure art. Created from natural fibers and woven one at a time to match the vision of the artisan, your Specialty rug is truly irreplaceable, and an heirloom that can be passed down from generation to generation.
Preserving its colors, protecting its longevity, and maintaining its attractive appearance requires maintenance and care. With such a large investment of not only money, but also time, you obviously want to protect its longevity and attractiveness. Embedded dirt not only mars its beauty but actively reduces the life of rugs and should be properly addressed to protect your long-term investment.
That’s where Superior Rug Cleaning enters the picture. Launched in 1985, for over 37 years Superior Rug Cleaning
has focused specifically on pursuing and investing in new, state-of-the-art technology specifically to ensure your heirloom
Oriental rug maintains its original beauty and quality.
This month, we interviewed Kerry McDuffie, the owner of Superior Rug Cleaning, to find out more about Oriental rug cleaning.
MV: How often should people clean their Oriental rugs?
Kerry: Many people don’t know this, but dirt can act as tiny razor blades to rug fibers opening up the fibers for dirt to get in. Especially if your expensive rug is in a traffic area, it should be cleaned every two years or so, even if it doesn’t look dirty. The dirt that you can’t see can cause damage to the rug. Once you see significant dirt, it is an indicator that the rug should have been cleaned earlier.
MV: There’s no question that Specialty rugs are replacing wall-to-wall carpeting in many American homes and businesses. Aside from their obvious visual differences, how do Oriental rugs differ from carpets?
Kerry: Conventional carpeting is machine made and tufted with synthetic material, although cotton and wool are sometimes used in higher end wall-to-wall carpeting.
Genuine Oriental or Specialty rugs, on the other hand, are created using natural fibers such as cotton, wool, and silk. These handcrafted rugs are woven one at a time, with artisans paying individual attention to detail, color, pattern, and the motif of each piece of art they are creating. These rugs are truly art for your floor.
MV: Does the use of all-natural fibers and organic dyes in the handcrafting of Oriental rugs require a different cleaning process than that used on conventional carpeting?
Kerry: Very much so. Because of the use of natural fibers, vegetable and plant dyes, meticulous care must be taken to ensure that dyes remain stable during the entire cleaning process. While wall-to-wall
carpeting can be cleaned with high heat and strong cleaning agents, with Oriental or Specialty rugs we use Aqua Clear Water Systems exclusive reverse osmosis pure

softened water and natural fiber safe washing agents. The rug is then thoroughly rinsed, run through our new centrifuge, and then hung to dry in a temperature-controlled drying room.
MV: Tell us about your centrifuge cleaning machine.
Kerry: I am really excited about the addition of the Rug Centrifuge to our cleaning process! The centrifuge enhances our Oriental area rug cleaning capabilities quite a bit. Most issues that can occur with Oriental area rug cleaning have to do with drying times after they are washed. After a rug is washed, of course, it needs to be dried. The longer it takes for the water to evaporate, the more potential problems can arise, such as potential dye migration and some return of minor pet urine odors.
The Rug Centrifuge rapidly spins the pre-washed rolled up area rug to remove 90-95% of the water within a few minutes, greatly reducing issues resulting from longer drying times. It also helps flush out pet urine that might have been left over from urine-soaked rugs. In addition, since we can dry your rug so much faster, the overall wait time for your rug cleaning project will be reduced significantly.
MV: Are there any other services Superior Rug Cleaning provides?
Kerry: Yes. We also clean the expensive outdoor cushions that many people have. As you know, they can get quite dirty over the seasons. In addition, we treat water damaged rugs and supply protective pet urine paddings for rugs.
MV: You have been in the Specialty rug cleaning business for a long time. Can you tell us more about yourself and your business philosophy?
Kerry: Absolutely! I have been married to my lovely wife, Sharon, for 42 years. We have two kids and six grandchildren. Superior Rug Cleaning is a local family run company. I have been in business cleaning rugs here in the Knoxville area since 1985. I have over 37 years of experience cleaning many different types of Oriental Specialty rugs. In that time, I’ve gone through extensive training, and I learned how to use the right method for different types of high-end rugs. You need to adjust for the material of the rug, the colors, the age, and the type of stain. For example, cotton rugs often need more special handling because they can have more dye migration than rugs made of other materials.
I guess much of my business philosophy can be summed up as, “Quality First.” I firmly believe that the quality of the job I do is remembered long after price is forgotten; I won’t compromise on quality since my reputation is at stake. At Superior Rug Cleaning the owner (that means me!) cleans every Specialty rug. I take pride in being honest and up-front with customers. Before I take on your rug for cleaning, I will give you an honest evaluation of what our cleaning process can and can’t do for your rug.
MV: Anything else you d like to add?
Kerry: When you selected your Oriental or Specialty rug, you invested in an item that is unique and nigh irreplaceable. This investment, with proper care, can span not just your lifetime, but the lifetimes of your children and beyond. To protect it, the key is to have your rug properly serviced by someone who truly understands your rug s unique cleaning needs.

Spring is a time of renewal when we witness new leaves starting to show on trees and bushes and colorful spring blooms putting on a beautiful show. Here in East Tennessee, dogwood blooms are celebrated all month long with color finally coming back to the landscape, brightening our surroundings, and lifting our spirits. And activity is picking up in the area as the days and evenings warm up. Recreation opportunities, special events, and travel options are slowly opening up again. Check out the activities now available to local residents during Saturdays on the Farm at Windy Hill Farm (pg 8A).
I know I get energized and inspired in spring to make some changes to my interior and exterior décor, and although we have been making renovations all last year, I still like to brighten up my rooms with a touch of spring. Sometimes all it takes is to add a nice colorful spring floral or maybe just change out some pillows on the sofa.
If it’s time for your Spring cleaning, let Superior Rug Cleaning (pg 1A) clean and rejuvenate your oriental and specialty rugs. And if it’s time to replace appliances, Pattersons Appliances now has 8 locations to serve you (pg 1B).
April in the Knoxville area is full of activity, and we hope you can get out and enjoy some of those events. It’s time to shed the winter blues and enjoy the bright colors of spring in our area. From the Dogwood Arts Festival to the natural landscape all around us, God’s glory shines here in East Tennessee.
Happy Easter from all of us at East Tennessee’s Mountain Views!

HE’S ALIVE!
Can you imagine a loved one who just passed and then come back to life three days later?
What joy and jubilance you would feel? Yes, Jesus is alive! He did rise from the grave on that first Easter morning. Learn about the last days of Jesus’ life here on earth, His crucifixion, and His Resurrection as Pastor Charlie Campbell finishes his study in the Gospel of Mark.
Join us Palm Sunday to remember Jesus’ coming to Jerusalem.
Be part of our very moving Tenebrae service at 7 PM
on Good Friday when all hope seemed gone. Worship on Easter Sunday starting with our outdoor sunrise service at 7 AM. Join for a light breakfast before we worship and celebrate the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ.
If you are looking for a church home, come and hear the Words of Jesus and Worship with us. Our exceptional music ministry includes our choir and orchestra under the direction of David Whipple, Jr. Jesus commanded us to go and make disciples and we take that charge quite seriously. Using Creative Gifts for God’s Glory
If you venture over to Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran church on the second Thursday of any month, you will find a group of crafters working together in outreach for both the congregation and the community.
The knitters/crocheters are busy making prayer shawls for those in need of a little extra comfort during times of illness, stress, or death. Prayer shawls can convey so much when we are in times of trouble. Knowing that prayers, love, caring and sometimes humor went into each stitch is an enveloping comfort when words aren’t enough.
The quilters, who are finally back in operation after a 3-year Covid hiatus, are engaged in making hot pads for visitor welcome bags. Future plans are for wall hangings to enhance the sanctuary and “Friendship Hall” in addition to quilts for community need.
And then there is the card making group! This committed group works with great creativity and passion for their craft designing greeting cards for any and all occasions. Every member of the Shepherd of the Lake family receives a birthday card each year. Cards go out in sympathy, for new babies, to the military past and present on Veterans Day or whenever a need arises to show someone they have our support and prayers.
There is creativity, indeed, on the second Thursday of the month at 10:00 am at Shepherd of the Lake. But there is something else there as well – fellowship and friendship! We are located right in the Tellico Village town center. All are welcome to join us, either on Thursdays for fun and fellowship, or Sunday mornings at 9:00 am for the Word and Sacrament.

Heritage Family Dentistry
“I Feel Just Like Family”
first learned about Heritage Family Dentistry when I was a patient of Dr. Bradshaw at the University of Tennessee,” said Heidi Hodges.
“I had stopped going to the dentist because of several past negative experiences.
“I chipped a tooth when I was pregnant with my fourth
child. I knew Dr. Bradshaw from my church, so I called him and he quickly took care of my chipped tooth. I was so happy with how he cared for me that I decided to follow him to his practice.
“I was very apprehensive at first, but Dr. Bradshaw and his team fully explained treatment and procedure to me in detail. They have been very understanding of my fears. I now visit Heritage Family Dentistry every six months, and they feel just like family.
“All of the people that work at Heritage Family Dental are wonderful. I have had cleanings, a filling, a crown, and currently have Invisalign.”
Invisalign is the latest and most advanced treatment for straightening teeth without metal braces. The clear aligners are almost undetectable by others, and some patients see visible results in as little as six months.
“I would highly recommend Heritage Family Dentistry to everyone,” said Heidi. “My experiences have been great, and I am so thankful to have a dentist to go to where I am not fearful.”

The Cold Call
K. Whitehead Managing Partner The Village Salon
Everyone knows a little about cold calls. An example everyone can relate to is the call from a total stranger trying to make you an offer you can’t refuse on that extended car warranty you were so desperate to find. Let’s take a minute to discuss how cold calls apply to your salon visits.
Cold calls in our industry are usually not made by the salon, but rather by our guests calling in for their first visit. Nearly seventy percent of our phone calls to schedule an appointment make a specific request for a Stylist or Nail Tech. These requests are made as a result of rescheduling with their normal provider, or they have a referral.
However, when you are making a cold call to schedule your appointment without requesting a particular operator, you will likely be assigned to which ever provider has an availability at the time you have requested your services to be done.
Most operators in our industry that have been at the same location for a while are usually booked up in advance with their regular guests and that means they are less likely to be able to accommodate a cold caller.
A cold call without a referral is most likely to get someone that is new to the salon and in the process of establishing their practice. ‘New to the salon’, can mean a couple of things. First, you might be assigned to an experienced operator that is new to the area, or you may be assigned to someone who has recently completed their educational requirements. Either way, a cold call without a referral will most likely lead you to an unknown commodity. Don’t be afraid to ask questions on your cold call and get some information about the person or persons that will be taking care of your services, it may be helpful in making your good decision.

A Passion for Fashion Since 1978
This is a replica from our Forty and Fabulous anniversary!
What a milestone to celebrate our 40th anniversary at The Lily Pad Boutique! Since that humble beginning in 1978, the shop has evolved into East Tennessee’s premier destination for women in search of the prettiest and best designer fashions.
It has been so exciting and rewarding to dress you for not only your day-to-day lives, but for those special moments as well... weddings, graduations, holidays... the special times when the perfect outfit makes all the difference. We love that you come to The Lily Pad knowing you’ll leave with EXACTLY what you had in mind!
Our goal has always been to make your time with us a “shopping experience.” The Lily Pad team is always eager to help you find silhouettes that flatter your body and accentuate your coloring, helping you every step of the way... accessories, shoes, and jewelry are all a part of what we offer.
And now, fast forward to 2023 as we celebrate our 45th year in business!
Many things are an updated version of 2017 with one major difference... the huge blessing I received when my granddaughter, Ivy, joined me full time in the business.
Ivy grew up working summers and attending market with me, so she wasn’t a stranger to the ins and outs of
the business. Having just finished college with a degree in marketing and entrepreneurship, Ivy brought a fresh, new approach to The Lily Pad.
Having launched our online selling platform and growing our social media presence, we were able to stay afloat during Covid, allowing customers to shop online and watch our virtual fashion shows.
So what began as a young housewife’s dream 45 years ago is now a multi generational, family-owned and operated business! We love serving the fashion needs of you, your mom, daughters, granddaughters, and girlfriends.
We will celebrate our 45th anniversary on May 18th, 19th, and 20th with unique shopping opportunities, lots of fun, and lots of giveaways each day to celebrate and thank you for giving us the opportunity to do what we love every day!

Pattersons Home Appliances
Opens New Store in
Are you looking for a Home Appliance company you can trust? Well, you ’re in luck! Pattersons Home Appliances has been serving their community for more than fifty years. In that time, they have spread out to eight different locations, always delivering the best products and services they can. They pride themselves on treating everyone who walks through their doors not just like a customer, but like family. This month, Mountain Views was privileged to interview Mark Patterson with Pattersons Home Appliances!
MV: Not only has Pattersons has been in business since 1965, but you ve even managed to expand to new locations, all while keeping the business in the family. What do you think has made Pattersons so appealing to customers for that amount of time?
Mark: I think there’s a lot we bring to the table. For one thing, we don t just sell you a heavy appliance and expect you to handle everything else like a lot of the big box stores do. We, on the other hand, will handle delivery for you, along with stuff like cords, installation kits, and so on. If you ’ve ordered a lot of free-standing appliances at once, we’ll take care of all of them for you. Just one charge, even with multiple appliances. We ll even unbox it and take your old appliance for you. On top of all that, we service what we sell, so really, we re a one-stop-shop for the community when it comes to appliances.
MV: What’s the business philosophy of Pattersons Home Appliances?
Mark: It really all comes down to transparency and trust. We want to treat our customers the way we d like to be treated, and that s more like family than just someone you do business with. All our technicians and staff and even our delivery drivers have to undergo extensive background checks and drug screenings, so when you come to us, you know exactly what you’re getting, and you know you can trust us. Most of the bigger stores go through third-party installers, so with them you can never quite be sure who will actually show up to your home. With us, you can rest assured that we know them and we ’ve put in the effort to vet them. More than that, our sales staff doesn’t work on commission, so they won’t feel that incentive to push you to buy something more expensive than you actually need. Instead, we make sure that all our staff are educated and knowledgeable about what they re
selling, so we can make sure you find a product that fits both your budget and your needs.
MV: We hear you ve opened a new location in Chattanooga. What do you think Pattersons brings to the community there that other stores don’t?
Mark: More than fifty years of experience, for one thing. Like you said, we’ve been serving the community here since 1965, so we know the market and know just how to take care of our customers and give them the products and service they need. We also focus a lot more on having a more personal touch. Ever since we first opened our doors, we ve been family owned. That’s three generations running the same business. We’re not some fancy big box store that only cares about the bottom line. No, we’re a family store, and we really do see our customers as part of our family. And from the instant you walk in through our front door, we want to treat you like it. Whether we re talking about any of our other locations or our new store in Chattanooga, that s the kind of atmosphere we want to provide. We really do want that personal touch in everything we do. That means friendly customer service, knowledgeable staff, and all the best brands at the best prices you’re likely to find anywhere.
MV: Including the new Chattanooga store, you now have eight locations, right?
Mark: That s right! We have locations in Cookeville, Crossville, Harriman, Oak Ridge, Alcoa, one in Knoxville, then there’ s the outlet store in Rockwood. And, of course, our newest location in Chattanooga. I know that might make us seem like a really big company, but we re really not. We re still family owned. We have eight showrooms, a Luxury Appliances Design Center, and 45 dedicated employees, so we really do mean it when we say we’re all a family here.
MV: It’s been great talking to you! Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Mark: Just that, by doing business with us, you ’ll be supporting your local community, and we re going to do everything we can to find you a product that matches your needs, your budget, and your lifestyle.

Do You Need a Trust?
By yvonne MaRsh cFp® cpa
It’s not an uncommon question – people often ask if trusts are needed. I’m not a lawyer, of course, but as a CFP® I can share what I see in my daily work.
My clients typically use trusts for two primary reasons – (1) so their heirs have the simplicity and privacy of avoiding the public probate process, and/or (2) to “reach beyond the grave” and control how the heirs can access their inheritance. Here are a couple of ways to accomplish either purpose.
A revocable living trust (RLT) is established while you’re alive. As trustee of the trust, you’re in full control. The trust uses your personal SS number, and all income is reported on your personal tax return. (Which is good because personal tax rates are lower than trust tax rates.)
Here’s the trick: you need to re-title all of your assets in the name of the trust, both now and in the future. Otherwise, you have an empty trust – you’ve created a governing document, with no assets to govern. To be sure,
your lawyer would have created a “pour-over will”, pouring any outside-held assets into the trust. But to accomplish that, your heirs have to go through probate, which you were trying to avoid.
Note that some accounts such as IRA’s cannot be titled in a trust’s name, and instead you would name your trust as beneficiary. (There’s a layer of complexity in naming a trust IRA beneficiary, so talk with your financial professional or CPA first.)
The second type is a testamentary trust, whose terms are laid out in your will, but doesn’t exist until your passing. This type of trust is used if you’re concerned your adult child might make poor financial decisions, or in anticipation of young adults or minor grandchildren inheriting assets. You name a trustee – who you want to oversee the assets– and layout how you want the trustee to use the money on behalf of the beneficiary. Typically,
these trusts have some payout schedule giving the money to the heirs over a period of time and then end, rather than lasting for the heir’s lifetime. It’s SO important to choose a trustee that will be wise in their decision making. The power they will wield is great.
As to whether you need a trust…it depends - on your unique financial situation and needs. It could be worth exploring.

Garage Floor Coatings: They’re Not Created Equal
Do you cringe at the sight of your pitted and stained garage floor? Has it become unsafe with crumbling concrete, cracks, or slick spots caused by years of leaked oil?
The garage is the first part of your house you see when arriving home and is often the largest room in the house. So, to make the garage a safe extension of the home’s living space, homeowners are investing in concrete coatings for the garage.
“There are options for garage flooring, but all are definitely not created equal,” explained Brian Falls, a co-owner of PremierGarage of Knoxville, the area’s most experienced garage flooring company. “The decision usually comes down to a choice between an epoxy or polyuera system. A polyurea flooring system, however, presents the most advanced and durable coating in concrete flooring technology. It’s truly quality you can stand on.”
Additional benefits of using a polyuera system for your garage floor include:
Surface that Withstands
Practically Everything
From extreme pressure, heavy impacts, and spills, polyuera is strong and durable. It provides better protection than epoxy against chemicals commonly found in garages, like gasoline, auto fluids and paint thinner. Its chemistry makes it more flexible and up to 20 times stronger than epoxy flooring. It is also UV resistant and contains no harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Most importantly, unlike epoxy, it can withstand extremely high temperatures, making it resistant to hot tires lifting and peeling the coating.
take three to five days to harden completely. PremierGarage’s polyuera floor coating, which retains it color and finish integrity, has a 10-year warranty.
Easy Maintenance
Spills clean up easily with a paper towel, but an occasional cleaning with just water and a small amount of vinegar will keep the floor looking brand new.
Bottom line, a polyurea garage floor is definitely worth
the investment and increases the value of your home. Yes, a garage floor can be both beautiful and strong!

East Tennessee Wildlife: Throated Hummingbird
Photographing the beauty of Tennessee, and the wildlife who call it home.
By kalley cook
Hummingbird Tongue - A Ruby-Throated Hummingbird male can extend its tongue a distance equal to their bill, while the female’s is even longer. They can flick their tongues into nectar 12 times per second. Their tongue is forked at the end and when they pull their tongue back in from a flower or feeder, the tips come together at the end and roll inward, which traps the nectar. When the tongue is at rest, it wraps around inside the bird’s skull since it’s so long!
Hummingbird with Jewelweed - Hummingbirds will pick flowers over your feeders when flowers are more plentiful, so don’t be stressed if they aren’t at your feeders during spring. They also need to eat gnats and small bugs for protein. Hummingbirds are the only birds in the world that can fly backwards, and those wings beat 50 times a second, which is always hard to capture those wings still in a shot!
Loren E. Plemmons ATTORNEY AT LAW
Spring is here, which means our Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds should be returning from their winter retreat is in Central America or Mexico. Yay! It’s hard to imagine a little hummingbird flying that far from Tennessee! If you’ve happened to have a hummingbird that decided to stay here all through the winter, it’s possible that you’ve had a Rufous Hummingbird or another western species, which does happen. Some people will purposely leave out their feeders in the winter just in case a western hummingbird does stop by. Just something to keep in mind for next time!
The best solution for your feeders is 1 cup sugar with 4 cups boiling water, mix and let cool before filling the feeder. The rest can be stored in the refrigerator for next time. It’s important to clean your feeders every other day and clean thoroughly to prevent mold. Poorly managed feeders harm our precious hummingbirds more than most realize. Whether you make your own solution or purchase it, it’s important NOT to use red dye! They don’t need it to see your feeders, and this does more harm than good. Hummingbirds are so small, the amount red dye ingested would be (ounce for ounce) 17 times of what has been approved by the FDA for humans.
These delightful creatures always bring me so much joy, as I know they do to many other people, and I can’t wait for their return every

Coming into Rest - They don’t rest often, and because they burn so much energy, they need to feed every 10-15 minutes to survive. After dusk, they go into an intensely deep sleep called topor. This helps to conserve energy, and their heart rate will drop to 50 beats per minute instead of the normal 1200 beats per minutes during the day. While I have more photos of female ruby-throats, which you can identify by the white streak behind her eye and the grey streaking on throat, I believe we all know where they get their names from - the beautiful ruby throat on the males.

Yes, I know you have plants in your yard that still look terrible. I do, too. I walk through of my yard and the Meadow View grounds at least once a week to check branches for flexibility. So far, they are all pliable, which means they are still alive. If yours are too, or if you have done the scratch test and there is still green under the bark, leave them alone. They are already stressed, and anything you do adds more stress. If you must fertilize, use an organic product that won’t force growth. If you must prune, stop as soon as you get to live wood. If you have questions, give us a call or stop by.
If you are not from this area, please be aware that this has not been typical weather. While the abundant sunshine is great for my mental health, I am worried because we have plants that are 3-4 weeks further ahead than they should be at this time. That means they are very vulnerable to cold damage. I am waiting to see what the mid-March temperatures in the 20s did, if my fears came true, you will be doing even more damage control, or everything will be fine. I’m hoping for the latter but was prepared for the former by covering my vulnerable plants.
Here is a list of things you need to do this month:
• If you haven’t done your walk around, this is the time. Take a close look at your plants to see what is recovering well and what isn’t. Remember that most professionals are suggesting that you give your plants until late May or even June to perk up. Patience is a gardener’s best tool.
• There are other issues to look for in addition to freeze damage. What has insect damage? What has fungal spots from last year? What needs to be pruned, divided, transplanted, or composted? Have things changed in the area? Make plans for what you want to get done this year and take those first steps.
• We have been seeing new and problematic insects the last couple of years, such as Crape Myrtle Bark Scale. Please call us if you think you have those. Many bugs are either benign or helpful, however, so don’t start drenching your plants in insecticide at the first sign of movement. Don’t hesitate to bring in samples if you have questions.
• If you saw fungal damage during your checkup, make sure you get any diseased leaves up and cleaned away. That will help prevent future problems. Plants that are prone to fungal problems, such as roses, will need constant vigilance and preventative measures.
• Get your planting beds ready if you have not already done so. Work in compost or aged manure to add nutrients. Get weeds out and apply a pre-emergent to make your life easier; however, do not use a pre-emergent if you are going to plant seeds!
• You are safe planting any of the cool season vegetables, but wait until midApril for tomatoes, peppers, and corn. Super sweet varieties of corn should wait until the soil is around 70 degrees, which is usually early May.
• Bedding plants are usually safe to plant by mid-month if Mother Nature is cooperating. If the weather is still erratic, it is safest to wait until later in the month to plant hollow stemmed annuals such as impatiens and begonias. They tend to turn to mush with a frost. Other annuals are more tolerant. Ask us if you have questions.
• Get your containers ready for spring. If they are large or have permanent occupants (shrubs, perennials, etc.), you do not have to dump the dirt out every year. Top dress them with a couple of inches of compost or fresh soil instead. After 3-5 years, you really need to take everything out and start all over.
• If they are small, dump the soil out and rinse the pot. If the plants had any fungal problems, mix a tablespoon of bleach into a gallon of water and pour it into the pot, then rinse it out. Refill the container with fresh, good quality soil that is specifically for containers. I use Fox Farm, Fafard, or EarthMix.
• If some of your spring blooming shrubs and trees need a trim, do that within a couple of weeks after they finish blooming. Please educate yourself! Permanent damage can be done by careless whacking.
• Don’t cut bulbs back until after the foliage has yellowed so they can store up nutrients for next year. BulbTone or Bone meal helps.
Please stop in with any questions, check our website for workshops or just to look at all the gorgeous stock we have in. Beautiful gardens begin here!

Weatherproof All of Your Out-of-Door Events
It’s time to move your family’s events back outdoors, and the professionals at Undercover Systems can provide you with the unlimited out-of-door options that your family can enjoy all year-round.
Spring is the perfect time to install Undercover Systems’ totally unique underdecking ceiling system under your home’s existing raised decks. This totally proprietary and patented underdeck system will ensure that this year’s events will be protected from unexpected and unwanted rain, the searing summertime sun, and wintertime sleet and snow.
“Spring is a great time to weatherproof all of your future out-of-door events,” said Jim Conn, owner of Undercover Systems. “Throughout the entire process, our skilled craftsmen work with you each step of the way, from consultation to project completion, until you are completely satisfied. And because each underdeck system we install is custom made by Undercover Systems specifically for your home, you can be assured of many years of reliable, trouble-free family enjoyment. Most competitive systems use generic, off the shelf components found at the big home improvement box stores. Homeowners also appreciate the fact that their new underdeck system is totally supported by Undercover Systems’ gutters and not your home’s deck as with competitive systems. This promotes greater deck air circulation and deck longevity.”
You’ll also appreciate Undercover Systems’ attention to detail, which comes from years of experience, as they help you craft a seamless transition from your home’s interior to your new out-of-door living spaces, which will perfectly complement your existing architecture and landscaping plan.
A complaint-free member of the Better Business Bureau, Undercover Systems offers you the peace of mind that you deserve in a building contractor.
Why not surprise your family this season with a special springtime gift that the entire family can enjoy all year long and start creating a lifetime of memories? Call Jim Conn today at 423-267-0091 and start celebrating every season out-of-doors.

Need a Custom Closet?
5 Questions to Ask Yourself
Are you always sorting through the never-ending amount of garments you have hanging in your closet just to put together the single outfit you had in mind? Can’t find the pants to match the shirt? Or the shoes to match the pants?
While life can be messy and disorganized, a closet should not. Closets should make life easier. A custom closet that’s designed and organized based on your needs provides much more organization and maximizes storage space, which means less frustration.
The Tailored Closet professionals will meet with you in your home, listen to your specific needs, and work with you to design a space that fits your everyday lifestyle. Here are some preliminary questions to ask yourself before calling for your in-home consultation:
How much space do I have to work with?
This is the primary aspect to factor into your closet planning. Knowing how much space you have will help the professional designer from The Tailored Closet determine the best organizational system for your closet. Also consider ceiling height when you take inventory of the closet space. Making use of every inch can be important if you’re working with a small space.
What is my budget?
While the cost really depends on the size of your closet, a basic system with hanging and shelves will cost less than including cabinets and drawers. Additionally, the finish color you choose will impact your budget. A white finish will always be less expensive than wood grains and darker finishes.
What types of clothing am I storing?
Some people only want to hang shirts, blouses, and pants in their closet and leave other items such as undergarments stored in a bedroom dresser. Think about what types of clothing and accessories you want to store inside your closet, and it will help you put together a picture of your organizational needs.
Which accessories and organizers do I need?
Convenient accessories like jewelry drawers, fold-out ironing boards, tilt-out hampers, drawer organizers, and pullout belt racks are among the many options that bring more order to the closet and help you easily find items.
What do you want to display for convenience?
From ladies’ purses to men’s ties, for multiple items of the same type of clothing there are closet organizers and designs that provide convenience and style.
For more than 12 years we ’ ve been passionate about improving the look, feel and funtionality of your home As whole-home organization specialists, The Tailored Closet can enhance every area of your home with innovative storage solutions that are tailored to the way you live
These are just a few ideas to keep in mind when thinking about your custom closet design. Once you have considered your budget, what you need to store, and the space you have, The Tailored Closet of Knoxville will design a custom closet system with features built around you and your lifestyle!

OTC… or Not
By RoBeRt FeRRaRo, h i s. – tellico heaRing solutions
What’s the deal with Over-the-Counter hearing devices? Recently, the FDA has developed regulations that allow individuals over 18 years of age to purchase certain hearing devices “Over-The-Counter”, provided they have self-detected mild to moderate hearing loss. These sound amplifying devices are designed to be less expensive than professionally fitted hearing aids. Because of the technology used to make them, and because the customer self-selects and self-fits the device themselves, they are often available at a lower cost.
Certainly some of the 48 million people in the U.S. with hearing loss may be good candidates for OTC devices, but how do you know if you are one of them? And how do you decide which one, if any, is right for you? These days there is a profound lack of awareness – and denial – about the true nature of hearing loss, as well as its complexity, its life-affecting implications, and what it takes to make corrections work for the hearing impaired. Since people are able to “self-select” OTCs on their own, they can easily miss the FDA Red Flags that hearing care professionals are trained to be on the lookout for and required to refer for medical attention. Records show that this has prevented numerous cases of death and debilitation from many undetected and untreated conditions that require professional care.
Your first step should be to get a hearing test/evaluation from a trusted hearing professional. While such a test is actually required in order to purchase OTC products, an online self-test is often allowed (this should be your first red flag). Getting this test administered by a trained professional will give you the confidence of knowing your exact hearing condition. You’ll also know for certain whether or not you are a candidate for an OTC product. Hearing professionals are NOT “middle-men/women”. We have a wide variety of technologies and services to offer. These services are what make the hearing aid immensely valuable to those who use hearing devices. If only it were as simple as a microphone in the ear!
A couple of things to consider if you’re thinking about buying OTC hearing devices:
1.) Prices will range from a couple hundred dollars to a couple thousand dollars. That’s because these devices fall into three categories: Generic (“off-brand”), Private Label, and Name Brand (the “Big 6” manufacturers). The generic category will usually lack certain features that you really need. Also, as they have proprietary software not available to others, buying generics will not allow you to get follow-up service from a professional clinic down the road if you need it. Hearing devices in the private label category were most likely manufactured by the Big 6 (Phonak, Starkey, Oticon, Signia, Widex, Resound) but they will not be the highest technology level from these brands and therefore will lack the newest enhancements these brands have made.
2.) You will not have the expert fitting offered by the professionals. This involves topics such as wire length, dome type, dome size, distance of receiver from the eardrum, occlusion effect, custom ear molds, vent size, etc. These are all critical to proper fitting that cannot be accomplished without a professional physically being in the room with you. Remember, the biggest factor in successful hearing loss treatment is NOT the device itself, but it IS the hearing care professional you work with.
I do not look at this OTC ruling as an upset to the hearing aid “market”. Personally, I don’t even consider this a “market”, but rather a means to help people who suffer from hearing loss, as I do! Rather, the ruling’s intention was to make hearing aids more accessible to individuals and remove some of the “stigma” around wearing a hearing aid. After all, does anyone still consider reading glasses a stigma to people who need some magnification for small print?
So call us to schedule your free hearing test, and when we discuss the results I will be happy to tell you if I recommend you try an OTC product.

“Trust is the foundation your home is built on.”
“Their craftsmanship exceeded our expectations. We are so very grateful for our beautiful forever home in Tellico Village brought to life by Keener Homes, Inc.”
Ours was a little different home building journey. We enjoyed living in a small mountain village in Germany for the past thirty years. When we started to plan our retirement in the US, we wanted to try building a home of our own.
Though we had visited Tellico Village several times over the past five years, we ended up having to purchase our Mialaquo lot from Germany, at the beginning of the pandemic, with the help of our realtor’s phone video. After reviewing several local builder’s websites and interviewing Kit Keener over the phone, we felt very comfortable starting the building process from across the Atlantic Ocean. Kit was very friendly, knowledgeable, and patient with all of our questions. Having never built a home before, we relied on him for advice. We really liked every suggestion he offered.
Once we were back in the US, we were also very impressed with Kit’s foreman, Derek, who was always willing to meet us at the house site and provided answers to our numerous questions. The subcontractors and suppliers were courteous, and their craftsmanship exceeded our expectations. It was obvious they took pride in their work. Krisha, at the home office, kept us up to date on our budget and patiently explained how everything worked. We appreciated Kit and his team with their warm humor cheering us on.
Building during a pandemic was tricky. There were significant supply cost increases and shipping delays. Kit and all of his team worked hard to minimize these setbacks and get us in our home before all of our household goods arrived from overseas. We are so very grateful for our beautiful forever home in Tellico Village brought to life by Keener Homes, Inc.

Spirituality is a remembrance, a feeling, the knowledge that you are more than your body. The promises of faith bring the caregiver, and the Alzheimer or dementia patient, a spiritual richness that flourishes, despite the illness. You are an eternal living being, and Alzheimer’s cannot steal your spirituality.
An individual with Alzheimer’s or dementia, especially if they were raised in religious households, may enjoy hearing hymns or scripture passages. Some are able to attend worship services, while others may avoid social situations and enjoy a clergy visit at home. You can also watch a taped worship service together.
Caregivers also have spiritual needs, and spirituality can be a support through the caregiving journey and serve as a source of strength. Studies have shown that having a spiritual anchor helps to cope with the tasks of caregiving and lowers feelings of depression. Members of a religious community can provide tremendous support to the
caregiver and family.
Honor the spiritual life of the individual and yourself, as caregiver. Share passages from the Bible or devotional readings. Use older translations of scripture or hymns, as they may be confused by newer versions. Pray together or listen to and sing along to familiar hymns. Attend the Easter worship service at Our Place, 103 Cheeyo Way, Loudon, on April 5 at 4:30. Our Place Caregiver Support Group meets the second Friday (9-11AM) of each month at the Tellico Village Public Library. The Male Caregiver Support Group gathers on the third Wednesday each month (1-3 PM) at Christ Our Savior Lutheran Church, 260 Wade St. Loudon (just off Route 72).
The spiritual gifts you are open to receiving come in unexpected moments of joy. Recently, while volunteering at Our Place, I asked one of the participants if he enjoyed singing. He immediately broke out into the hymn, “I’ll Fly Away.” As he began to sing, one by one the other participants around the table raised their heads and began to sing with him. Truly, a more poignant choir has never been heard!
PICKLEBALL TOURNAMENT:
Tellico Village Pickleball is partnering with Our PLACE to host the Second Annual WE CARE Pickleball Tournament May 5-May 7, 2023 at the Tellico Village Wellness Center Courts and the NEW PicklePlex. Participants will be coming for the tournament from five states; competition will include skill level brackets. The tournament will be followed by the After Glow Party at the Tellico Village Yacht Club on Thursday May 11, 6-9PM. That evening enjoy the great view, food (small bites) and beverages (cash bar), as we participate in raising funds for Our Place. Musical entertainment will be provided by Second Wind, and a variety of auction items will be available for bid (vacation in Florida, wine tasting event, condo in Michigan, Dollywood, local destinations and restaurants).
