Premiere of Italian Renaissance Alive Making its world premiere at Biltmore, Italian Renaissance Alive is an all-new multi-sensory experience created and produced by Grande Experiences.

This fitting tribute to George Vanderbilt’s lifelong passion for fine art invites you to enjoy some of his favorite works in an entirely new way: immersed in the beauty and brilliance of the greatest artistic period in history as it comes to life all around you. Large-scale projections with 360-degree views set to a powerful operatic score tell the story of artists and the time periods within which they lived. Located in Antler Hill Village, Ciao! From Italy combines botanical designs with authentic greetings from the Vanderbilts in a large-scale format that’s sure to charm all ages.

25, 2023:

Biltmore Blooms

A long-time spring tradition, Biltmore Blooms celebrates Biltmore’s historic gardens and grounds and the return of warm weather, featuring a progression of thousands of spring flowers growing across the property. Starting with daffodils, followed by the tulips, wisteria, azaleas, rhododendron, and roses, the estate offers something new on a near-daily basis. Easter activities on the estate on April 8 and 9 will feature an Easter Scavenger Hunt.

Biltmore Blooms honors the genius of Frederick Law Olmsted’s vision for George Vanderbilt’s western North Carolina home. Vanderbilt approached Olmsted in 1888 to create a design for his land. Under Olmsted’s guidance, Biltmore became the first place where anyone had combined French and English landscape designs.

Love. That seems to be the traditional theme for the month of February. And yet, there are so many different types of love. We love food, we love cars, we love stores, we love vacations, movies, jokes, and so on.

We love people. We love our friends and our family; those who truly make our lives worthwhile. There are those we love unconditionally; and those who love and accept us – despite our faults.

There’s romantic love; the love we show to that extra special someone that rocks our world and whom we just can’t live without – our sweethearts, our significant others, our beloved. This tends to be the traditional focus of Valentine’s Day.

But, the highest love of all is Agape love. The Greek word agape is used for God’s love toward us and for the love that we should display toward one another. Some call this “charity” – as described in 1 Corinthians 13; some call it sacrificial love.

I’ve learned to love this East Tennessee area. I love the mountains, the trees, and the GREEN (well, it’ll be back soon)! We are blessed with scenic beauty, mild weather and lingering sunsets. We have recreational opportunities with hiking trails in the parks and Smokies, fishing, boating and water sports on our many lakes and beautiful country drives. However, what stands out even more, is the people. The people who, on a daily basis, quietly and unassumingly serve one another. Tennessee truly deserves to be called the

Volunteer State; there are so many who have made helping others - serving others - a way of life. It’s just what you do. I believe that is how we show love to our neighbor.

So, during this challenging month with winter weather still lingering and cloudy days more the norm than sunshine, we have a bright spot to celebrate - Valentine’s Day. It’s a day we can make plans for a special night at home and have a wonderful dinner or get away to a favorite warmer location. If you’re looking for an extra special and elegant treat for your Valentine, check out the Mabry Hill Catering Valentine’s Day event at the Sweetwater Flower Shop (pg 8B). This amazing menu is prepared by Executive Chef Jared Martin (former executive chef at several top restaurants in Knoxville).

However you choose to show your love, I know your Valentine will appreciate any plans you took the time to make happen or any special gift you chose just for him or her.

But I also know that you, the amazing people of East Tennessee, don’t need a special day to demonstrate your love for one another. You show it every day with acts large and small. It’s just what you do.

I hope your Valentine’s Day is filled with joy and happiness in spite of all that is going on in the economy and the world. So, from all of us at East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, we wish all of you a very Happy Valentine’s Day and many blessings of your own. The East Tennessee’s Mountain Views Team

holiday season — the Christmas at Biltmore daytime house tour experience, and the Candlelight Christmas Evenings nighttime house tour experience.

Nov. 3, 2023 – Jan. 7, 2024:

Christmas at Biltmore Daytime Celebration

This beloved tradition includes a daytime tour of Biltmore House while the estate is adorned with holiday decorations that number in the thousands. A daytime visit to Biltmore is a feast for the senses, featuring wreaths, garlands, and the sparkle of ornaments. From Biltmore House to the Winery and Antler Hill Village, guests will want to linger on the estate to experience all that Christmas at Biltmore has to offer.

Nov. 3, 2023 – Jan.6, 2024:

Candlelight Christmas Evenings

Biltmore House glows with candlelight and firelight during this nighttime tour, changing the daytime visit’s mood and experience. Candlelight Christmas Evenings in Biltmore House allows guests to step back in time with an experience reminiscent of the Vanderbilt’s first Christmas spent in Biltmore House in 1895. Musicians stationed throughout the house perform seasonal favorites. Setting the scene is a 55-foot Norway spruce encircled by illuminated evergreens and shrubs sparkling in the center of the front lawn. Luminaries line the walkway to Biltmore House.

More information about these events, and how to purchase tickets, is available at Biltmore. com or by calling (800) 411-3812.

First Baptist Continues Good News Sermons in Mark

Charlie Campbell, our interim pastor, is walking us through the entire Book of Mark chapter by chapter into early April. Sermons in February will cover the 7th through 10th chapters where Jesus spoke to crowds of thousands teaching them about the Kingdom of God and performing miracles along the way. As the sermon series continues into Spring, Pastor Charlie’s study will include a moving Tenebrae service on Good Friday and conclude on Easter Sunday when we celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus.

If you are looking for a church home, come and hear the Words of Jesus and Worship with us. Our exceptional music ministry includes our choir and orchestra under the leadership of David Whipple, Jr. Jesus commanded us to go and make disciples, and we take that charge quite seriously. Under the leadership of our Associate Pastor Kem Lindsay, we offer several adult Bible study options. Sunday Worship services are 9:00 AM and 10:30 AM, and adult Bible study options available at the same times. For more info visit us at FBCTV.org.

Love, Actually

Iborrowed the title for this article from the popular movie that has become a favorite for viewing at Christmastime. The movie tells ten separate stories about individuals in various relationships - romantic and otherwise - many of which are intertwined with each other. The stories are all set in the five weeks before and one month after Christmas, hence the movies’ popularity at that season. Given its status as a rom-com favorite, however, I am sure it also gains viewers in the weeks leading up to Valentine’s Day. The greeting card industry has long promoted a connection between Christmas and Valentine’s Day by assuring that Christmas cards are removed from the shelves on December 26th and immediately replaced by Valentine’s cards.

We Americans love to celebrate the day of love. The greeting card industry estimates that 145 million Valentine’s cards are sent or given each year and note that this does not include cards made by children in school or at home. The cards are only the beginning, of course. There are the dinners, the roses, the candy, the jewelry, and the various other extravagances that add up to about 27 billion dollars according to the National Retail Foundation. That’s a one-day spend worthy of the US Congress.

I don’t think that these celebrations and related expenditures result from somber contemplation of the meaning of love. Rather, I suspect that they are motivated by a salad of emotions that includes, yes, affection but also desire and guilt. Greeting card companies thrive in that kind of biosphere. Valentine’s Day is what it is, and I don’t disparage its frivolity or commercial trappings. We only get in trouble if we think that St. Valentine’s Day is what love is all about.

The traditional story of the Saint for which the day is named is that he was a Roman priest in the third century who defied the emperor’s ban on marriage for soldiers by secretly performing marriages for those who asked. When his disobedience was discovered, his romantic gesture was rewarded with a death sentence. He should be named the patron saint of greeting cards.

Grizzled veterans of love – and I’m as grizzled as they come – have learned love’s lessons. We know that the long course of love requires stamina, patience, a sense of humor and – the really tough one – selflessness. Those who need more than two fingers to count the decades of their marriages or committed relationships have stories to tell and advice to give to those just starting out. The sad fact, nonetheless, is that you have to do the work to make it work. There are no shortcuts or quick fixes. Loving relationships are stories with many chapters and all the cards and roses are merely footnotes.

In my Church, we talk and read a great deal about love. In fact, we have this one story we read over and over again that is all about love and ironically begins with Christmas. It continues every Sunday throughout the year with no interruptions. It’s had a two thousand year run so far and doesn’t show signs of ending. When it comes to thinking about love it’s a good place to begin…and good place to end also.

Have a Happy Valentine’s Day.

creased to age 73 if you’re born in the years of 1951 – 1959, and to age 75 if you’re born in 1960 or later. (If you were already subject to RMD’s, having been born in 1950 or before, there are no changes for you.) How does this

help? More time for systematic multi-year Roth IRA conversions, of course? Remember, Roth conversions are how you move money your IRA to a Roth IRA, paying tax on the conversion, but then forever shielding the amount moved in a tax-free Roth account. Roth IRAs insulate you from future tax increases and provide a taxfree legacy for your heirs.

Second, a new beneficiary strategy is available that is advantageous if the surviving spouse is older than the deceased spouse. Starting in 2024, a spouse who inherits an IRA as a primary beneficiary will have the option to be treated AS the deceased spouse. Huh? Usually, most surviving spouses roll over the IRA and take RMD’s based on his/her own age. But by electing to be treated AS the deceased (younger) spouse, it creates a longer delay before RMD’s have to start, and when they do, they’ll be a smaller dollar amount. This could be a major tax savings.

There are more tax planning opportunities that are embedded in the Secure Act 2.0, and this is important stuff, so I’m hosting a Zoom call on Thursday February 9th at 10am EST. We’ll delve deeper into these ideas plus other features such as further “rothification” of 401k’s and an interesting twist on unused college 529 plan money rolling into Roth IRA’s. Join me for a lively conversation about the Secure Act 2.0, and I’ll leave time for questions too. I promise I’ll make it fun. Call or email our office and ask to have the Zoom link emailed to you to register.

Equipping You to “Live Your Best Life”

Local pharmacist and entrepreneur, Ellen Phillips, operates a unique, client-centered concept in pharmaceutical care: believeRX, located at 9627 Countryside Center Lane near the intersection of Middlebrook Pike and Bob Kirby Road in Knoxville. Ellen and her compassionate, caring team of highly trained pharmaceutical associates have a mission to provide traditional pharmacy services combined with a holistic approach to health and well-being. Now, with the addition of their newest pharmacist, Arlyn Cuccia, the care available at believeRX just got even better.

believeRX is a full-service traditional pharmacy where you can get all of your medications and supplements, as well as receive a personal approach to your health. Ellen and her staff believe there is more than one way to prevent or treat disease, and we offer alternative therapies such as Halotherapy (dry salt therapy for breathing conditions, skin and mental well-being), infrared heat sauna sessions, peptides, and a large selection of high-quality supplements such as Terry Naturally products, and many more.

believeRX is very different from the “national chain” pharmacy you are used to. Believing it’s time to focus on patients, not just their prescribed medications, staff members even receive additional training to become Certified Health Coaches.

Ellen and her team strive to provide a custom-tailored experience for each customer/patient by treating them as a whole individual and not just their specific ailments or prescription medications. Their name says it all, “We Believe in You” and your goal for better health, well-being, and longevity.

In addition to believeRX, Ellen and her team of health-conscious professionals have created believeRXtra in the same location, offering fresh, healthy great tasting fresh juices, smoothies, and bowls, made with real ingredients and without any added sugar. They are sweetened with only natural sweeteners such as local honey or agave - and they taste fantastic!

Medical grade protein, Blender Bombs, YourSuper, CBD Oil, MCT oil, collagen, and many other options to help promote weight loss round out the offerings to help equip you to maintain good health, and

Arlyn Cuccia joined believeRX as a pharmacist in April 2022 after working at Walgreens for the past 14 years. She brings over 22 years’ experience to this new role. Originally from the Memphis, TN area, she completed her Doctor of Pharmacy degree at the University of Mississippi.

Arlyn has always been passionate about her patients and improving their health. Along with managing their prescription medications, she has taken an interest in a more holistic approach, which is what brought her to believeRX. Arlyn recently obtained her Integrative Pharmacy Specialist Level 1 certificate and is currently working on completing Level 2.

When not working, she enjoys spending time with her husband, two daughters, and their dog Biscuit.

break sugar addiction!

Remember the old-fashioned pharmacies of the 60’s? Like believeRX, they also featured personal, caring service and after-hours home delivery, when needed. Some even had ice cream and soda fountains. Also, like believeRX, they were very different from many assembly-line medical pharmacies of today. Those pharmacists knew their customers and treated them as individuals and friends. Going into a large, chain pharmacy, many feel treated like only a number. It is refreshing and encouraging that believeRX still

believes in personal, caring, and holistic customer service.

To experience a friendly, caring pharmacy that you might have thought no longer existed in today’s big box, assembly-line pharmacy world, you are invited to visit believeRX or believeRXtra today!

Halotherapy comes from the Greek word Halos, meaning Salt. In this therapy, salt is fed through a halogenerator to heat, crush, and grind it into fine particles. Those particles are then dispersed using a dry spray aerosol to be inhaled by the nose and mouth - expelling pollutants and opening breathing passages - or absorbed topically to penetrate skin conditions. This therapy kills bacteria, reduces inflammation, and expands airways to benefit those struggling with: • Breathing issues from allergies, asthma, emphysema, bronchitis, sinus infections, cough, and sinusitis. • Skin conditions including dermatitis, psoriasis, acne, and eczema. And chronic ailments like ear infections, cystic fibrosis, rhinitis, and ENT issues. Waiting Game

Ever hear of the old saying of, ‘don’t take no for an answer’? We all have, and we all apply it to our lives in one way or another on a daily basis.

Your hair appointments should be no different. Granted, there are many times we call in to the salon to make an appointment with our favorite provider only to find out that there is nothing available. This is where you begin to play the waiting game.

The first thing you should do is to ask who you are speaking with if they will take your name and number and ask your provider to call you back. If you have a good relationship with your stylist, they are usually going to do everything in their power to satisfy your scheduling needs and can often find little gaps in their schedule that the front desk staff is unable to offer.

When you hear back from your provider, if they are not able to accommodate your scheduling needs at that time, you should ask them to place you on their waiting list. Nearly all that manage a successful practice have a waiting list, and last minute cancellations happen on a semi-regular basis.

As long as you are flexible with your own schedule, you should be offered several options to take care of your requests. In the event that you wish to see a particular provider for the first time, simply ask the staff at the front desk to be placed on their waiting list. We would always rather fill an empty spot caused by a cancellation than to let it set there unused.

So when you can’t get the appointment you want, don’t be afraid to play the waiting game. More times than not, it all works out.

that I may have a rare concept regarding the dental profession,” said Billymac, a small business owner that provides services to area telecommunication and data entry businesses. “As a child, I was raised to perform those personal dental hygiene steps every day. However, being the last of nine children, the personal attention to some of those tasks was not watched as close as maybe they should have been. As a result of this neglect, my teeth suffered.

“My personal attention to my teeth came much later in life when I sought those that could help me have and keep a better appearance and longer lasting, healthy smile,” continued Billymac. “I would cover my natural smile, because I realized it was from neglect. Also, the expense to improve my smile was always a major factor. After years of visiting a variety of dental providers, I finally found the level of dental care I always sought at Heritage Family Dentistry when my dentist retired. Heritage Family Dentistry was committed to helping me achieve the new smile I desired.

“At an age of 62, I really enjoy the compliments from others that my new smile brings,” said Billymac. “One of the best things that has happened to me is my renewed self-confidence and the new doors of opportunity that have opened up to me thanks to Heritage Family Dentistry. I love their professionalism as well.

“I would highly recommend Heritage Family Dentistry to everyone, particularly if you enjoy smiling and laughing, which is contagious and begins the moment you enter their office and you meet Ms. Brandy.”

animal. Not too many get to see the affectionate side of wildlife, and some might not even realize how much love wildlife have for their families. But if you sit down long enough and watch any kind of wildlife family, you will see that strong bond. I see it more often in moms with their little ones and siblings, but of course I have seen it with mates. I will never understand how one can say animals don’t feel or anything along those lines, because I have seen it firsthand all too many times. When I go photographing, I go out with a mindset of hoping to get these kinds of interactions; these moments are really so special. Please enjoy these photos which represent a few of the moments I hold close to my heart. I hope they make you as happy as they make me. Happy Valentine’s Day!

Fox Hugs - If this doesn’t make you feel warm and fuzzy, I don’t know what will. Such a sweet moment between this mom and her baby. Mom came home after a long day of being away and I believe this particular baby was just so happy. Out of all the animals I photograph, the red fox is definitely one to show more affection.

Achallenging build during the worst of times….

The 2020 – 2021 building season reinforced Charles Dickens’ words in the Tale of Two Cities “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness…” Keener Homes turned the 2020 – 21 building season into the “best as possible” time for my home build. They met or exceeded the obstacles of the 2021 building season. During this time, all builders were faced with COVID enhanced problems - wildly fluctuating lumber prices, supply chain issues, and labor shortages. In addition to all the COVID related problems, Keener Homes also faced dealing with me - a recently widowed, out of town client, who had never made a solo decision before, building on a very difficult steep lot with beautiful trees, on a fixed budget with midcentury, contemporary style. I believed I had an impossible dream.

Keener Homes built my sister and brother-in-law’s large lake-front home over 16 years ago, and I have always admired the beauty, quality, and structural integrity of her home. I never thought that I could afford a custom Keener home, nor believed that they would build a smaller, more contemporary home. From the first meeting, I realized that Keener Homes was the correct decision. They listened - really listened - and understood the vision I had for my home. They set realistic allowances so that I could stay within budget while achieving the most important design concepts. I left Tellico Village shortly after with full confidence that I had selected an honest, dependable, and capable builder who would make my dream become reality. The build went smoothly and efficiently because of the consistency of the Keener Homes crews. The trim person had actually worked on my sister’s house. The crews worked together smoothly because of the close relationships that have been built over the years.

Some of the challenges facing out of town clients include, communication, selecting products and materials, verifying that work is well done in a timely manner, and staying within budget. Again, Keener Homes exceeded my expectations. Communication was open and very responsive. Calls and questions (no matter how complicated or trivial) were promptly answered. Monthly updates reflecting accurate and labor costs were emailed and weekly (sometime daily) photos showed the quality of the work and provided verification of work progress. Keener Homes provides many vendors for each building project and décor. It is a personal choice to select the vendor you are most comfortable with and can provide the best product for your budget. Zoom meetings were used to make selections and decorating choices throughout the project. Even though I had a smaller scale project, the builder and vendors

treated me with the upmost respect, courtesy, and professionalism. I respect and admire Keener Homes for building my house as if it was their own. They kept me informed of any delays due to supply chain issues. Very infrequently, choices had to be revisited because of budget constraints or manufacturing issues, but Keener Homes would provide me with a variety of close matches to make new choices. – Marie McClendon Serving Tellico Village and surrounding areas since 1994. No, it’s not just you. Some of the mess and mounds of stuff in your garage is often just the busyness of life. However, without efficient storage and organization solutions, clutter and chaos will continue to plague you.

If your garage looks chaotic, you can quickly gain control with custom garage storage cabinets from PremierGarage. PremierGarage, serving the Knoxville area for more than 15 years, will help you find storage space for just about everything. One of the biggest advantages of custom garage cabinets is they are tailored to your specific space so you can maximize the available storage space. Cabinets are designed to fit around water heaters, electrical panels, doorways and windows. You’ll get a clean, uniform look throughout your garage without having to piece together ready-made, do-ityourself storage pieces.

Styles include traditional cabinet doors or siding doors for enclosed cabinets in narrow spaces. Cabinets can be integrated with countertops, drawers and wall-hanging storage systems to maximize your storage space. Sturdy one-inch-thick adjustable shelves inside the cabinets are 25 percent thicker than the industry standard and have a load-bearing capacity of 100 pounds.

Other cabinet and storage options include:

» Utilize unused garage ceiling space by having overhead racks installed. The heavy-duty ceiling storage is perfect for seasonal or occasional use items. Overhead racks help keep wall and floor space clear so that cars, bicycles, and gardening tools, don’t have to compete for space.

» Adding locks to doors or drawers provides additional safety precautions to keep tools or toxic products like paint thinner, radiator coolant, and fertilizer out of reach of children.

» Slatwall with its various hooks and baskets is ideal for sports equipment and large tools like rakes, shovels, and hoses. Slatwall helps keep everything off the floor and close to the wall for easy accessibility.

» A wide range of styles, finishes and colors let you coordinate your garage cabinets with your home’s existing décor, or you can create a whole new look for the garage.

The perfect foundation for your garage cabinets is a durable custom garage floor. PremierGarage can transform an oil-stained, pitted, or peeling epoxy-coated garage floor into a showroom quality look. PremierGarage uses a proprietary hybrid polymer technology with their extensive indus-

WORTH THE RISK?

As aggravating as hearing loss can be, at times it can be tempting to avoid treating it. We get it. Treatment for hearing loss can be a big investment and may seem a bit overwhelming. Maybe it just seems easier to raise the volume on your TV and get on with your life. But hearing loss is like any other medical condition. Not only can it affect your physical health, but it can damage your mental well-being too. So, we’re here to ask you a question: is letting your hearing loss go untreated worth the risk?

There are numerous issues that can come from untreated hearing loss. But we’ll list just some of them here:

» Anxiety from not being able to hear a child, or a fire alarm

» Difficulty talking to and understanding family and friends

» Balance issues and increased risk of falling

» Loss of sleep or irritation due to tinnitus (ringing in the ears)

» Depression from social isolation and trouble communicating with loved ones

» Fatigue from sleep loss and the extra effort to follow conversations

» The fear of missing out by not hearing important parts of a conversation

» Strained relationships

Recent studies show that people with untreated hearing loss are at an increased risk of developing dementia, while treatment for hearing loss can reduce that risk.

Whatever your situation, treating your hearing loss can improve your quality of life, sometimes drastically. That s why at Tellico Hearing Solutions, we are here to help you find out if a hearing device is right for you. Whether in our office or in the comfort of your own home, our cutting-edge technology helps us perform complete and thorough testing of your hearing. After a comprehensive test, we ll not only tell you if a hearing aid is appropriate for you, but we ll also fit you with the best device for your hearing situation and budget. We can even provide devices to make everyday living easier. These include devices for use with your phone, TV, or other audio equipment. We can help you enjoy the simple pleasures of life again, like a conversation with your family or a good song on the radio. Trust us, you won t believe what a difference it can make!

We understand that plenty of people don’t even want to think about getting a hearing aid. We really do understand. Robert, our Certified Hearing Instrument Specialist, is a long-time hearing aid wearer himself, so he knows exactly what dealing with hearing loss is like. More than that, he also knows what it s like to feel the joy of getting his hearing back. He wants to help others experience the same thing for themselves. That s why we can guarantee you’ll receive compassionate, thoughtful care and the best hearing aid available for you.

Untreated hearing loss can have a damaging effect on almost every area of your life, and it will only get worse the longer you leave it alone. With our free hearing evaluation, you can take the first step towards changing your life for the better

In the Garden February

Let’s go ahead and start this month by talking about the Christmas freeze. We are getting daily calls about “dead” plants and what to do about them, so here is what you need to know.

First of all, it was not the low temperature that damaged the plants - it was how quickly the temperature dropped. Our temperatures had been very moderate in early December, and many of us had new growth and even bulbs emerging. When the temperature dropped almost 50 degrees in the span of 24 hours, the plants simply did not have time to adapt. If cold comes gradually, plants will pull the water from their leaves to their roots and send sugars in as somewhat of a plant antifreeze. Since they didn’t have time to do that, the water froze in the cells, causing them to rupture. Plants can’t fix that, so they have to push all those leaves off and grow new ones. Some have pushed their leaves off already, and some will hold on to them until new ones grow. In either case, those plants are not going to be pretty for some time.

What should you do? Wait. It will be late May or even later before we see the extent of the damage. In the meantime, you should leave them alone. Only prune plants that you would normally prune this time of year (more on that later) and be patient with everything else. Nature takes

time to heal.

Now let’s get back to our regular to-do list. As always, go out and walk around your yard to see what is going on. This is especially important considering the freeze damage. Remember to look up, down, and all around. Look up at tree branches to see if you have sparse canopies, broken or damaged branches, loose bark, woodpecker holes, or mushrooms. Look down for weeds, mole tunnels, vole holes, or shallow holes where possums, skunks, or raccoons are digging for grubs. Note shrubs that are heavily damaged in case you must replace any, but don’t give up on them too soon.

Here are some other things that you can do this month:

» If you are growing vegetables this year, now is a good time to get your beds ready. Work leaf mold, processed manure, and compost into the soil. I also like to use worm castings as an amendment. Adding amendments now will give them time to break down to add nutrients to the soil.

» It should be warm enough to sow greens, lettuce, peas, radishes, and onions by the end of February. If you have a cold frame, you can start cold weather veggies such as broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage.

» A 3” layer of mulch on gardens and

flower beds helps keep soil temperature and moisture levels more stable. Remember to make donuts and not volcanoes around trees - piling mulch around the trunk damages it.

» February is a good time to prune summer blooming deciduous shrubs and broadleaf evergreens, but I urge caution. If your plants were badly damaged by the freeze, pruning will stress them further. It would be a good idea to go a little lighter on the pruning than usual until you see what survived and what didn’t. No Crepe Murder! Please do your research before you start whacking away. We are planning a Pruning workshop for late February, so watch for that. It is fine to wait until then to do your pruning.

If you haven’t cleaned out your beds, this is a great time to cut out the privet, honeysuckle, and wild grapes that hide in your shrubs. You can also vent some frustration pulling weeds. Stay current with your weeding or you will have a much bigger problem to deal with in the spring!

Do not forget the birds. They are hav-

ing a hard time in the cold and really appreciate a full, clean feeder. High fat foods such as black oil sunflower seeds and suet will help them stay warm. A heated birdbath will create a spa!

» Indoor plants can also use a little love this time of year. Check them for diseases and insects and make notes about which ones need to be up potted or divided. I usually give my smaller plants a shower in the sink to rinse off the dust that has accumulated and use a cloth or Swiffer to clean off the larger plants. It is also time to resume fertilizing if you took a break while they were dormant. I prefer to use an organic product like Espoma on a bi-weekly basis.

I know you will soon have lots of questions about your plants, so don’t hesitate to give us a call or stop by. We want to help you have a beautiful yard!

Closet Trends for 2023

Closets: Everybody has them. And a good closet system can certainly make your life easier and more organized, especially your primary closet.

Well thought out and organized closets not only help maximize storage capacity, but they also increase the value of your home. In fact, for the past few years, primary closets with plenty of storage have been one of the top 10 features people look for when buying a new house.

If you’re thinking about renovating your primary bedroom suite or building a new house, here are a few trends for 2023.

His and Her Closets – Create perfect harmony with your significant other with his and her closets. Women are adding touches of glamour with chandeliers and mirror accents. Men prefer less glamour but want to display and easily find items like special hats or ties. With two walk-in master closets, each person can create a custom design that meets their

individual needs. If it’s one large walk-in closet, create sides that are mirror images, so neither partner gets more storage than the other. Equality does breed harmony.

Ditch the Dresser – To make more room in the bedroom, homeowners are saying goodbye to their dressers. Incorporating drawers and shelving in the closet allows for space and versatility to store your entire wardrobe. Drawer storage in the closet provides an out-of-sight organization while lending an attractive, smooth finished look. The primary closet is now designed to be one-stop-shop when it comes to getting dressed.

Counters – If you have the luxury of space, an island provides the perfect place for a landing zone of daily items. If there isn’t enough space for an island, have a contrasting or matching countertop placed above a double set of deep drawers. Homeowners are often using this

space not only as a landing zone, but also as a charging station by placing an outlet just above the countertop.

Multifunctional Designs - Most often space is a premium in homes, so homeowners are looking to maximize what they have and evolve the space to fit their needs. Designing space in large walk-in closets for multipurpose functions, such as including a vanity or a place to sit down, is rising.

Whatever your style, The Tailored Closet will design a custom closet that fits your needs. As whole-home organization specialists, Tailored Living also has innovative storage solutions for the pantry, laundry, home offices, garage and more. Make 2023 the year of organization.

Valentine’s Day

Communication is an art, and it can require redirection and creativity. When you’re talking with someone with diminished memory and verbal skills, it’s important to check yourself and your expectations of what a “normal” conversation sounds like. Approach your loved one from the front, have your body language be welcoming, with a smile and open hands. Use their name with a calm voice, as your emotions can easily be understood by the individual with dementia.

If you are asking a question, “yes” or “no” responses can be productive. If asking more complicated questions, break down the language into words that are more easily understood. Rephrasing a question may not be helpful; repeat the question in the same way so you don’t confuse them. Practice the pause - it may take up to 90 seconds to get a response. Become comfortable with silence; that is a gift you give them. If they get frustrated answering, don’t jump in to finish their answer. Just respond with something like, “I forget words all the time”. Slow your pace of talking, using simple directives. If you expect a multi-part task, break it down into one step at a time, or model the action. What about those moments of anger or frustration we have when the conversations are stressful, or too slow, or we are challenged by the repetition? You may be able to redirect the conversation, or even just validate your loved one by acknowledging their frustration and offer comfort. Sometimes it’s helpful to take a break and leave the room for a few minutes to calm the situation. Understanding that each day may bring different behaviors, changing levels of communication, or moments of unexpected joy, is essential to granting grace to you and your loved one.

As the Alzheimer’s or dementia progresses, language may diminish. The brain preserves rhythm, but not language; that is why songs, music, poems remain a part of the person. They may begin to “chatter” in a conversational way, but the words make no sense. To the speaker, the rhythm of the words seems right, and they feel they are conveying thoughts. Acknowledge their efforts and embrace those moments of clarity. This was made clear to me in a recent conversation in December, when we visited an antiques store; a “young” lady of 99 was greeting customers as she often does. Over the past year we have noticed a decline in her verbal ability, but she still is a highlight of our visits. That Sunday, her son explained that she had been “chattering” all day, but not making any sense. As we said our farewell and wished her a Merry Christmas, she looked into my eyes and clearly uttered, “You be happy.” That was a moment of pure joy, as she shared her wish for me.
