This Year Invest in You, Invest in Your Home By Sandy Kozar – Owner – Decorating Den Interiors Kozar Design Team

E

very year January is filled with inspiration for new diets, new exercise goals, setting new daily routines, and many start journaling to track their goals. This year why not focus your intentions on your home. More and more, we’re seeing new scientific research that proves that your living environment can have as much of an effect on your health as your eating and your exercise habits. Did you know that by spending time in a space you perceive as beautiful can actually lower your stress and your blood pressure? Contrastingly, if you’re in a cluttered overwhelming space, that can actually raise your blood pressure by adding on-going visual strain, tension, and adds a constant to-do list in your mind, letting your mind never truly rest. It makes sense. Your home is your foundation, and where we all go to relax and recuperate from the day, but if your home is also visually stressful, how can you rejuvenate? In light of that, making an investment in your home can actually have more of an impact on your daily life than you might expect. That’s where we come in. Hiring a professional interior designer allows clients peace of mind by bringing their aesthetics and needs together in a way that is convenient, curated, and fun. Here at Decorating Den Interiors | Kozar Design Team, we strive to help all of our clients live in a beautiful home that matches their lifestyle and needs too. With a combined 25 years of experience and degrees in interior design, as well as being Decorating Den Certified Designers, we have the experience and training to make rooms functional and aesthetically pleasing. Oftentimes we do this by creating a different layout, changing the traffic flow, and/or using the proper amount and scale of furniture. We also coordinate fabrics, furniture, flooring, window treatments, artwork, lighting, wallpaper, and wall color together using the elements and principles of design. We aim to create visual interest, along with adding comfort and style. Is there enough variety and texture? Does the space need more lighting? Will additional seating be needed? Do the window treatments need to provide sun protection or privacy? Would the room need to be easily cleanable for children and pets? These are all

“I had a wonderful experience working with Decorating Den. Sandy and Rachael helped with updating several rooms in my home, (Living room, Master Bedroom, Master Bath and Dining Room). They both did a fantastic job using our things and adding in the new and arranging the rooms in a new way. The end result was fantastic and I now have a look that I love. Had a great experience and would highly recommend.”

“Sandy and Rachael helped with an update of our downstairs interior. They did a great job using our old things, adding a few new, arranging things in a new way, window treatments, and selecting paint colors. We now have a great new look that we love. We had a great experience and would highly recommend.” – JoAnn, Knoxville some of the many questions we ask when pulling together a design. No matter what your design dilemma is, we consider it all when designing your home for you: interesting architecture you can’t quite figure out, special health considerations that might influence your layout, intricate hobbies, a large art or specialty collection, furry family members, a large extended family, or anything else. We do this through in-depth interviews during our complimentary consultation with homeowners to learn their lifestyle preferences and functional needs. We listen to the emotions they wish their home had, and the quality the room should have as well. This allows us to create and implement a personalized design plan that is curated and unique for each client. From the thousands of design options available to us, we narrow the scope of options to a perfectly curated two or three design options for their home, making sure that it fits all of their requirements and desires. Since all of the options we present will be perfect for the finished room, clients can easily choose their favorites. Do you have an idea in mind, but not sure how to get there? One of the best

benefits to hiring a designer is that we save homeowners costly mistakes, as well as the hassle of returning or repairing those mistakes. By using our photo realistic 3D renderings, scaled sketches, physical fabric, wood, and rug swatches, we are able to show each client exactly how their new room will look. We analyze all of the pros and cons of each option. Our clients can feel confident their new room will be

exactly as we envisioned it for them! Plus, we save you the stress and wasted time of going through solutions that would not work or endless shopping at retail locations trying to bring it all together. We believe that everyone deserves to live in a beautiful and comfortable home that makes them feel welcomed and continued on page 4A ...

Resolutions – Changing Focus

I

’ve made my fair share of New Year’s resolutions. Lose weight, get organized, exercise more, learn a new skill, do better at something, read the Bible in a year, break a bad habit – all good goals. Some of them, I stuck with. Others, not so much. So, as I think of the New Year and the fresh start it represents, I’m thinking of something a bit different. Not so long ago, I taught musical theater to middle school children at a Christian school. I used to pray that God would send me the number of students I needed to pull off the show I wanted to do (with excellence). But one day, as I thought about how much our program had helped so many students grow (recalling countless parents thanking me with tears in their eyes), I changed my prayers. Rather than praying for the students I thought I needed, I began praying for the students who needed us. Back to New Year’s contemplations: most of my New Year’s resolutions have been about what I need; this year, I’d like to redirect my focus onto what others need – in my personal life and in business. I want to be more aware of what my mother needs. Ditto for hubby, son and daughter-in-law, grandchildren, friends, as well as business and ministry partners. I want to help our advertisers reach the clients they need; I want to help our readers connect

with the trustworthy businesses they need. So, rather than making a list of New Year’s resolutions this year, I’m saying this prayer. Dear Lord, In this new year, help me to better see the needs of those around me. Show me how I can meet those needs or ease their burden. Prompt me to give an encouraging word to those who may need it. “Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love.”1 May I be your light and reflect the light of your love to others. May I be your instrument. May I be your hands and feet. Amen May this new year be filled with opportunity, growth, and fond memories. Happy 2024 to all of you! Kathy Rose East Tennessee’s Mountain Views 1. From the Prayer of St Francis

I loved that they were able to show me my room virtually of how it would look. The quality of the materials and workmanship were very good. They did everything right on time. We’re very satisfied with the job.” – Pamela, Knoxville

“We love it all so much! Both Sandy and Rachael are excellent decorators and so easy and nice to work with. They never made us feel like we were ignorant or had no taste! Since we had such a good experience, we decided to have Sandy to redo our master bedroom closet. We would recommend Decorating Den Interiors to anyone looking for help with home decoration.” – Janet, Maryville with installers, delivery and professional installation of all goods, as well periodic updates with clients throughout the process to ensure all progress stays on track to meet our expected deadline. happy. We also realize how an investment in your home sets the stage for family celebrations, and improves your everyday life, and for making memories that will last a lifetime. Nothing is more sacred than your personal space you share with your family, and nothing makes your day easier than a home that fits your lifestyle. However, it’s more realistic when you have an investment range in mind for this. For all of our projects, we design within an investment range. Once the investment is set, this also lets us determine which of our manufacturers (from good, better, best, and luxury lines) to design the project with. We can work room by room, entire homes, or bits at a time, but the project will be within an agreed upon investment range. Not sure what things cost at the moment? That’s okay, during our complimentary consultations we walk through what items typically cost, and work with our clients to find an investment range that they and we feel comfortable with. When clients give us an investment amount, we are respectful of that. Another benefit of hiring professionals is you get professional results. We help clients from the beginning of their project to the end and beyond. Our professional design services are all inclusive of: all plans, drawings, conceptual sketches, and renderings, all presentations, project sourcing of all materials, all finish and fixture selections throughout, all selections to ensure both function and aesthetic fit for all furniture, rugs, lighting, window treatments, art accessories and more selections. Throughout the project management aspect, we are responsible for: purchasing of all goods approved, tracking and shipping management, professional receiving, inspection of all goods, coordinate schedule

Just 1 Step Protects Your Heirs from Future Estate Tax

T

By Yvonne Marsh, CFP®, CPA

he current estate tax exemption amount is $13.6 million per spouse before a 40% estate tax kicks in. While at first glance, you might think that has nothing to do with you and your heirs, stay with me and I’ll show you how estate taxes just might reach out and grab you. Congress tinkers with the estate tax exemption more often than you think. As recently as 2008, the exemption was only $2 million. In 2026, it’s already legislated to be reduced to about half of the current exemption amount, or about $7 million per spouse. And as our national debt continues to grow – over $33 trillion – more tax revenue is needed, and estate tax exemptions are an easy thing for Congress to reduce without creating a groundswell of objection. Here’s what you need to know to protect yourself and your family: if you are a surviving spouse, you need to file a Form 706 estate tax return to elect the “portability provision” which allows the surviving spouse to claim their deceased spouse’s unused estate tax exemption. How does that help? Let’s say a husband passes in 2024 and all of his assets go to the surviving wife, so by definition none of his estate exemption is used. The wife files Form 706 and claims his exemption amount as her own – so now she has $13.6 million locked in to add to her own exemption. That’s a BIG safety net against future

exemption amount reductions! Conversely, let’s say she never claims her husband’s exemption amount and lives another 10 years. During that time Congress reduces the estate tax exemption back to the 2008 $2 million level. Her kids inherit $3.5 million at her passing. They’ll pay 40% estate tax on the excess over $2 million, which is $600,000. Yikes! If she had claimed her husband’s exemption, then $13.6 million PLUS her $2 million would have been protected from estate tax and her kids would have $600,000 more in their bank accounts. Here’s the kicker – NO ONE tells you that you need to file Form 706 at the first spouse’s passing. If you (or your financial advisor) don’t know to take advantage of this rule, then it is lost to you. The deadline to file is 9 months from the date of death, BUT the IRS issued a recent revenue procedure allowing for the filing as late as 5 years after death. So, if you missed this process, or know someone who did, it’s not too late. As part of our integrated wealth management services, we make it our business to understand these intricate tax rules and advocate for our clients. CHURCH WHAT’S IN IT FOR ME?

10A • East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, January, 2024

M

By Claire Moxim

y husband and I moved to East Tennessee 25 years ago from New England. Although not retired yet, we looked forward to this move as a brand-new beginning for the rest of our lives. Brand new beginnings aren’t always what we think they’re going to be when we start the journey. Our journey brought with it the best (or worst) of all ourselves, our plans, and a sudden detour. I left a church in Connecticut that had been a home to me for over 15 years. So many things had happened to me while I lived and worshipped with that congregation. My young daughter became a widow, my son left for college, both my parents died, and I had to learn coping skills that did not include dependency on alcohol, food, or people. Most of my life had been spent wrapped and coddled by family, friends, and good luck. I didn’t have any coping skills for dealing with the harsh realities that life often tosses at us. Where do you turn when you just don’t know how to do it? Yes, there’s professional counseling and advice from well-meaning friends, but at the end of the day, there you are - alone. For way too long a time, I tried to run and hide and pretend that I actually was able to handle reality by myself. Solitary prayer and a solo relationship with the Lord just wasn’t all of the solution, and I sunk deeper, wondering where God was in all that mess. My church family reached out to me and loved me when I couldn’t love myself. They never judged or smothered, only showed compassion, friendship, and God’s love. I still had to make my own mistakes, but that’s how we learn, whether it’s English, Math or Life. The biggest thing that I learned was that we are not meant to live our lives alone. Belonging is being a part of a group where we are nurtured and can continue to learn and grow. Together we weather the storms of life and the joys that come with the rainbow. My husband died sixteen years ago - not an event we ever thought our brand-new beginning would take us to so quickly. I was so blessed to be surrounded by a loving Christian community. I was able to take a fork at the crossroads of my life with confidence that no matter what lay ahead, I was not alone. Today my church family at Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran Church in Tellico Village is one of the most important gifts I’ve ever received, and we are such a gift to each other. And there’s the Big Revelation .... it’s not all about what I get. As a member of a caring church community, I’ve learned that fulfillment can be found in knowing that I too have gifts to bring and share. I’ve discovered a joy that cannot be found in the loneliness of any mind-numbing substitute that I might try to use to get by. God works through his people, my family - What a blessing!

Claire Moxim lives in the Kahite neighborhood of Tellico Village with her two rescue dogs and a grandson. She is active in UT’s H.A.B.I.T. (Human Animal Bond in Tennessee) program and has visited schools weekly with her RUFF READER dogs, Wally and Alice. Alice currently visits residents at NHC Holston Hills. Claire serves on the board of the Good Shepherd Center in Madisonville and is an active member of Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran Church in Tellico Village. A

s we welcome the New Year at First Baptist Church of Tellico Village, Pastor David Talley begins a series of sermons on the book of Acts also known as the ‘Acts of the Apostles’. Inspired by the Holy Spirit, Luke recorded details of the rapid growth of the early Church following Jesus’s death, burial, resurrection, and ascension into Heaven. Luke records the Day of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit came to earth, and through Peter’s preaching, over 3,000 came to faith in Jesus Christ. He continues with many details of Paul’s missionary trips to Asia minor and Europe. Join us for this in-depth study of how the Church started, and how it is still growing through-out the world today. If you are looking for a church home, come and worship with us as Pastor Dave teaches us about ‘Acts of the Apostles’ and shares the Words of Jesus. Our exceptional music ministry includes our choir and orchestra under the leadership of David Whipple, Jr. Jesus commanded us to go and make disciples and we take that charge quite seriously. Under the leadership of our Associate Pastor Kem Lindsay, we offer several adult Bible study options. Sunday Worship services are 9:00 AM and 10:30 AM with adult Bible study options available at the same times. For more info visit FBCTV.org.

New Year. New Projects for your Kitchen or Bath! W

ith the new year comes inspiration to tackle some projects around the house. Although you may have dreams of gutting your kitchen or renovating the bathroom, these big jobs are costly and time-consuming. Instead, consider taking on smaller projects that will give you the best bang for your buck. Here are some ideas to spark your creativity. 1. Organize and better utilize your pantry. Throughout the year, you probably accumulate all sorts of things in your pantry. By removing the contents and throwing away expired items you can start with a clean slate. Consider installing pull-out shelving to better access your items. Hard to reach items will be at your fingertips, and you will increase your storage capacity. 2. Create usable storage space in your bathroom cabinet. Bath products, hair products, and cleaning solutions may be taking up all the space under your bathroom sink, leaving you no room for essentials like toilet paper and tissues. With a two-tiered pull-out shelving system, you can maximize your storage and easily find what you need. 3. Declutter and find more space for your pots and pans. Are you frustrated with the way you store your pots and pans? Most people get frustrated looking in their cabinets for the right size pot and matching lid. With pull-out shelving, you can easily arrange your pots, pans, and lids so you can access them quickly when cooking. 4. Make better use of corner cabinets. Most kitchens have a corner cabinet that has dead space that is often hard to access. With a unique pull-out solution for corner cabinets, you can add more storage space in your kitchen. It’s a cost-effective way to use the space you already have without adding to the footprint of your kitchen. You may not be able to redesign your whole kitchen, bathroom, or pantry at this time, but you can ease your frustration by working on smaller projects that will have lasting impacts throughout the new year! Easily Overcome Anxious Moments at the Dentist

H

aving first begun her search for a new family dentist online, Vicki Ailey found Heritage Family Dentistry. “They had all five-star reviews,” she said. “Heritage Family Dentistry is a wonderful practice. I have major ‘dental anxiety,’ and they always put me at ease. They

treat you like family. Dr. Bradshaw and his team are very gentle and make sure you are comfortable throughout your entire procedure.” Vicki’s first procedure was a dental implant. Dental implants are fast becoming the preferred treatment option

Dentistry for Your Family

for patients with missing teeth. Most patients can’t tell the difference between dental implants and their natural teeth. And, more importantly, dental implants continue to promote healthy bone density in the jaw. In the absence of natural teeth or dental implants, bone density can deteriorate, often creating a sunken or premature aging appearance. “Dr. Bradshaw is also very informative,” said Vicki. “He takes the necessary time to explain everything in detail and always makes certain that you fully understand the recommended treatment plan and procedure. “Heritage Family Dentistry is the best dental office I have been to. I have moved often and have seen at least 10 dentists. I would absolutely recommend them to others. They are the best dentistry team I’ve ever experienced.” Patients at Heritage Family Dentistry can further relax with warm neck wraps and their choice of soothing music or nature television. To learn more about Heritage Family Dentistry, request a tour and a free, no-obligation consultation by calling 865-816-9211, or visit them online at www.hfdsmiles.com. Also, be sure to ask them about Invisalign, the revolutionary clear alternative to metal braces.

A Gift for Caregivers

T

By Diane Strever and Celia Gruzalski for OurPlace TN

865-657-3077 | www.etmv.com

he New Year brings thoughts of new beginnings, resolutions to do things differently, and becoming more giving individuals. It is difficult to be a friend to a caregiver of someone with Alzheimer’s or dementia; however, it is the one gift you can give them that is incredibly important. We shy away from awkward conversations and situations, but the caregiver needs the opportunity to share their high and low moments. They need a friend who will support them with phone calls, cards, or simple acts of kindness like dropping by for a cup of tea or picking up some groceries. Working on a puzzle together, reading Scripture, or bringing the mail in each day are ways you can support those who care for loved ones 24/7. It is a heavy burden, and just the chance to laugh, or shed some tears together, means the world to a caretaker. Think about making your New Year’s Resolution to reach out, as a friend, to someone you know who needs your support. This year in these articles I will be sharing stories of some of the participants and their families who are in the OurPLACE adult day program. Over the last year, I’ve had the privilege to volunteer in the program and meet some of the amazing participants who attend there. Their families recognize the value of the program for their loved one and see firsthand the growth of friendships and community in that setting. I witness the moments of joy that happen in the midst of breaking bread together, sharing stories of the past, or laughing with each other as they create beautiful artwork. The families also are able to reconstruct their own lives, a little closer to normal, when they have time to do the things they have not been able to enjoy or practice while their time has been filled with caregiving. This month, our Moment of Joy individual will be Yolanda, who came to Tennessee via Florida from Jamaica, New York. She is the 5th of 8 children raised in a strict Italian family and worked for an editorial service firm, which published indexes for books. She has four children, three sons and a daughter, Beth Ann, who is her sole caregiver. Yolanda enjoys interacting with her friends at OurPLACE, playing Bingo in the group or making crafts. At the annual brunch, Yolanda grinned from ear to ear, recognizing that all of her friends were there together to celebrate the holidays. Beth Ann recognized that her mother would benefit from a structured program to overcome social isolation and slow down the progression of her dementia. When OurPLACE opened and her mother was enrolled, she dropped her off that first morning, and came back several times in that four hours to make sure she was doing well. The next morning, after her mother was in the program, Beth Ann went home, and just sat in silence. “People who do not care for someone with dementia do not fully understand the mental and physical exhaustion the caregiver suffers… 24/7, 365 days a week,” Beth Ann shares. Having her mother in the OurPLACE program allows Beth Ann to volunteer at a local animal shelter two days a week, get the grocery shopping done, go for lunch with a friend, or do the laundry. “I couldn’t even do the laundry without my mother asking about why the water was running, or why there was a noise. OurPLACE is a life saver for me.” Our Place TN 103 Cheeyo Way Loudon, TN 37774 865-657-7222

Happy New Year and Happy Savings!

J

by Brenda Bryan

anuary is a great time to reassess your winter wardrobe. There is finally time to go through all of the pieces hanging in your closet that haven’t been worn yet this year and either donate them or take them to your nearest consignment shop. Whichever you choose, you’ve begun the process of updating your own winter wardrobe while selections are still great and on sale! At The Lily Pad, our sales are huge semi-annual events which take place in January and July. Our winter merchandise is now 25% off, and on Saturday, January 20th, at 10:00 am, every piece that’s left goes to 50% off! Also, for this very special sale, we will be open on Sunday, January 21st only, from noon-5pm. We’ve found this method to be quite effective to not only clear out the store, but also to pass tremendous savings on to our customers. As the winter merchandise goes on sale, our “La Sale Boutique” (the big room in the rear of the store) goes to 70% off. Thus, the clearing out begins as we ready ourselves and the store for a brand-new season! Spring fashions have been ordered, new, fresh looks are arriving, and the holiday decorations have been put away for another year.

We’ll look forward to seeing so many of our customers and friends during our unbelievable sale days. If you’ve every spent a day at Filene’s Basement in Boston, The Lily Pad is almost as wild on the first days of our sale! Plan to spend some time with us as you visit with friends and neighbors, every arm loaded with bargains and having the time of our lives! What a fund day during a not-so-fun month… it’s a social even you won’t want to miss! At the Lily Pad, we reflect on how blessed we have been this year to again be a part of your lives. We truly appreciate the vote of confidence you place in us to be your fashion headquarters! Our most sincere wishes from the entire Lily Pad staff for a happy and healthy 2024!

The Terror of Tellico Plains By Bo Carey, Historian

ay Jenkins was likely the most legendary man to ever live in this area. His colonial style mansion was within striking distance of today’s Wind River on one side and the Coyatee/Tommotley neighborhoods on the other. To be more specific, it was 520 sprawling acres comprising the farm nearest to what’s now the Tellico Dam. But his reputation as the “Terror of Tellico Plains” had nothing to do with Tellico Lake and much to do with his childhood upbringing in the wild, unforgiving mountain environment just a few miles from here. Jenkins fame was created as a controversial yet successful lawyer in Knoxville in the last century. He is best known in Washington for his work in 1954 as special counsel to the U.S. Senate Committee investigating the Army- Joseph McCarthy controversy. In East Tennessee, he defended 600 accused murderers without losing a single client to the electric chair. He represented Knoxville’s most reputable madam as well as moonshiners, jealous wives, preachers, and various shady characters. In Ray Jenkins memoirs he notes his service during World War I, his campaign to complete the Tellico Dam and his 59 years as an attorney at the bar including, in his words, “the kind of bar with brass rails.” Those memoirs with all the intriguing stories of his amazing life may be found in the book he wrote entitled “The Terror of Tellico Plains.” Bo Carey is a 7th generation Loudon County resident with a passion for local history. He is the owner of Greer’s Home Furnishings in Historic Loudon and is available for lectures or programs for any area group or civic club. Open up your entire base cabinet interior for maximum storage space. You won’t sacrifice style when you remove your cabinet stile!

By Carrie McConkey, CarrieMcConkey.com

es, you read that correctly… we didn’t misspell the word “style!” We were referring to the stile - the narrow vertical piece of wood that separates two base cabinets. It’s also known as the section that you are constantly reaching around to get things in and out and the part that makes storing and retrieving large or bulky items near-to-impossible. At Shelf Help, we love to help our customers remedy this inconvenient kitchen occurrence. Like magic, removing the center stile opens the entire base cabinet interior to maximize storage space. And, by installing fully-extending softclose drawers, your cabinets transform into a pleasurable and practical asset for your home. This easy storage solution is one of our most popular. Below, we’ve answered some common questions regarding stile removal: What will my cabinets look like? When your cabinet doors are closed, your kitchen will look no different than before. Our installers make precision cuts to remove the stile, sand and finish the piece as needed, then re-attach it to your choice of either the left or right cabinet door. What kinds of supplies can I store? Crock-pots, stock pots, air fryers, mixers, bread makers, and more… anything can be stored on our heavy-duty gliding drawers - they support up to 100 pounds! We can also install vertical dividers to make cookie sheets, cutting boards, cake pans, cookware lids, and casserole dishes a breeze to retrieve and put away. Will this be expensive? We are not a franchise but a locally owned small business that allows us to customize our services and keep our prices surprisingly low. From start to finish, we work with you personally to evaluate, design, measure, and install. You won’t sacrifice style when you remove your cabinet stile! Increase your home’s value and usability with this low-cost, easy fix that can also be used in your pantry, bathroom, laundry room, or anywhere where you have base cabinets. East Tennessee Area Wildlife: Waterfowl Photographing the beauty of Tennessee, and the wildlife who call it home.

I

’m kicking off the new year talking about waterfowl, because winter is a great time to be looking for waterfowl that migrate here. I don’t know much about waterfowl, but I know a migratory duck when I see one and most of the time I’m able to identify them. They can be very difficult to photograph, as they are wild and aren’t your typical park duck. Anytime I’m driving around, I’m always looking in ponds, creeks, rivers, or just any body of water, and I pay even more attention to them this time of year. If you heard about the recent rare ancient murrelet found here in Tennessee, which is normally found in Alaska, then you should understand why I keep my eyes peeled because you never know what you just may find. The waterfowl I’m sharing in this article aren’t rare by any means, but I always still enjoy seeing them and others during the winter. Happy New Year! Contact: Kalleybcook@gmail.com

Ring-Necked Duck - In this specific pond, there’s always an abundance of these ducks and it’s always tough to photograph because it takes just one to see you and they all alert the others. This one had just spotted me hiding behind the trees, but and I had just enough time to get a few images before it swam away. They definitely don’t make it easy, but it’s necessary for their survival.

Blue-Winged Teal - You can’t see why they are called blue wing teal in this photo, but when they are in flight, you would notice blue on their upper wings; they are stunning to watch fly. These two are also males that I came across a small group in a swampy area - always a good place to find ducks. There is another species of ducks called the green-winged teal which have green on their upper wings, but I have never had the chance of photographing them.

Though wildlife and nature photography hold her heart, you can contact Kalley for all of your photography needs, including sports, portraits, still life, food, real-estate, weddings, and photojournalism. Kalley uses a Canon 7d markii, paired with a Canon 100-400mm lens for all of her photos. You can purchase photos or prints of Kalley’s wildlife photography on a variety of products (mugs, mousepads, magnets, etc.). Have a favorite animal that you’d like some text included? Custom orders welcome. Just go to https://kalleycook. smugmug.com or email Kalley. Shipping is available.

https://www.facebook.com/kalleycookphotography https://kalleycook.smugmug.com/

Hooded Merganser Pair - These ducks are so fun to watch, and if you have the chance to look up their courtship display, it’s amazing to see. In this photo, their hoods are not up; I wish I had a photo with them up. I came across this single pair on a backroad in a pond and the lighting was not good, but I had to photograph them anyway. You probably already know, but the male is in the front and the female is in the back.

January In the Garden

L

by

Lisa Grugin

et’s start over in 2024. Let’s rest for a bit and reevaluate. What do you want to do in the new year? How does your yard play a role in that? Would you like to create new beds and decrease the amount of lawn you have to mow? Do you have beds you want to get rid of because they require too much maintenance? What has changed in your yard that has impacted your plans? Did trees come down so that you have more sun? Have trees grown so that you have more shade? Do you have new neighbors that you would like to create a visual barrier for? Or have you had a life change that causes you to be less (or more) able to garden? Walk around your yard and think about what changes you want to make, then make your plans. January is a good time to do this because the structure of your yard is evident when the leaves are gone. There are all sorts of places to get ideas, from magazines to Pinterest to HGTV. Please remember, however, that some of those lovely designs are not suitable for our area. It is also very common for new customers to come in requesting plants that did well where they lived before but would not be happy here. Talk to us before you make costly mistakes. If planting trees and shrubs is one of the things on your list, you can still do that. Winter planting allows them to focus exclusively on their root system so they will be ready to grow in the spring. The assortment of plants that is available might not be extensive, but you are likely to find bargains! Getting your soil ready for next year is another great gardening project for winter. Planting cover crops or simply adding topsoil and compost will replenish nutrients in the soil and give all your spring plants a nice boost. Weeds will also continue to spring up, so pull what you can and Preen, Preen, Preen! For those of you who have been chomping at the bit to prune, many things can be pruned now. I encourage you to do some research before you start. You are performing surgery on a living thing, so don’t go whacking away all willy-nilly! Here are a few pruning guidelines: » There is no rule that says you must prune. Pruning should be used, however, to remove dead, diseased, or damaged branches. It is also useful to open up dense canopies to allow sunlight and air circulation. In addition, pruning can create larger blooms or more fruit and will control and direct new growth. » Pruning should be done at a specific time of the year depending on the plant. Blooming trees and shrubs are generally done after flowering. Others are done when they are dormant. Pruning at the wrong time can eliminate your flowers or kill your plant. There are pruning tables available at utextension.utk.edu. I also have a printout that I can make a copy of for you. Take a few minutes to read it before you cut all of next year’s blooms off. » Pruning should be done with a sharp pair of pruners or loppers. Dull tools tear the wood and leave it open to disease and insects. A few evergreens can be done with hedge shears, but those are the ONLY plants that shears should be used on. Pruning saws are good for larger branches, but if you need to use a chainsaw, you

should probably leave it to a professional. » Please DO NOT commit crepe murder! Our beautiful crepes are being attacked by bark scale, and badly pruned plants are much more vulnerable to infestation. Southern Living magazine has a great tutorial on their website. » It is possible to salvage plants that have been butchered in the past, so stop by if you have questions. My last suggestion is to leave at least part of your leaves on the ground. It is best to run over them with your lawnmower so they can decompose and add wonderful nutrients to your soil. It is a tremendous waste of money to remove all the leaves and then add fertilizers. Leaf fall also gives beneficial insects a place to nest during the winter. The birds would also appreciate some help this winter. Keep feeders full and clean, and try to provide a water source. Metal and plastic birdbaths can be left out all winter but may need a heater during the colder months. We reduce our hours in the winter, but we are still here five days a week. A Resolution to Keep

W

By Connie Ferraro – Tellico Hearing Solutions

hat’s your New Year’s resolution? With the start of the New Year come all the New Year’s resolutions. Some people try to make simple changes like joining a club or breaking out of your comfort zone once and a while. Others make more complicated goals, such as losing weight, breaking a bad habit, or establishing good ones. Everyone’s resolutions are different. But there’s one thing everyone knows about New Year’s resolutions. Hardly anyone ever keeps them. Maybe keeping the resolution was more difficult than we expected, or else life simply got in the way. Sometimes it’s because that resolution was never very realistic to begin with. Whatever the reason, the result is the same. But this New Year, we’ve got a simple and achievable resolution for you. This year, resolve to get your hearing tested. We here at Tellico Hearing Solutions want to help you find out if a hearing device is right for you. Our cutting edge technology helps us perform complete and thorough testing here in our office, or even in the comfort of your own home. After a comprehensive testing of your current hearing, we’ll tell you if a hearing aid is appropriate to you and fit you with the best device for your hearing situation and budget. If needed, we can additionally provide you with devices to make everyday living easier for you, such as listening devices for use with your phone, TV, or other audio equipment. Thanks to new technology, we no longer have to settle for only being able to hear certain volumes or frequencies. We can help you enjoy the simple pleasures, like a conversation with your family or a good song on the radio, better than you’ve been able to in years. Getting your hearing tested can be a scary thought, as can the thought of having to adjust to a hearing aid. We get it. After all, Robert, our Certified Hearing Instrument Specialist, wears a hearing aid himself, and he’s very familiar with what it’s like to deal with hearing loss. But he’s also experienced the joy of getting his hearing back through his hearing device, and he wants to help others experience the same thing for themselves. That’s why we can guarantee you’ll receive compassionate, thoughtful care and the best hearing aid available for you. Our resolution is to provide you with the best options available to resolve your hearing loss. But ultimately the decision on whether or not to take advantage of those options is up to you. The New Year is the perfect opportunity to take the first step and schedule a hearing test and evaluation of your hearing situation. Unlike most other resolutions, it’s free, it’s simple, it’s easy, and it can actually change your life for the better. So, make getting a hearing test your New Year’s resolution. We’ll be here to help you every step of the way. Tellico Hearing Solutions, PLLC 865-635-1887 contact@TellicoHearingSolutions.com

“We have had the pleasure of building two homes with Kit Keener. Kit, Krisha, and Derek paid attention to every detail and effectively maintained a timely “Trust is the foundation your home is built on.” building schedule. The sub-contractors, suppliers, and designers are all extremely professional and accommodating. Keener Homes develops and maintains a personal connection with its clients throughout the process. We could not be happier with our new home.” - Bob & Ramona Brunetti “We soon learned from other subcontractors and a few locals that Kit partners with some of the top subcontractors in the area, some of the most talented artisans in their field. Kit, Derek and Krisha are always a cell phone call away to solve any issues that arise. Our experience was very positive, and Kit Keener would be our first choice if ever to do it again.” - Dave & Alicia Godo “Working with the Keener Homes team was an absolute joy! In the end, we have a home that we are thrilled with. I can say for certain that there are not too many areas in which another builder can outshine Keener Homes because we cannot imagine the process going any smoother than it did.” - Dave & Cheryl Byrne “Their craftsmanship exceeded our expectations.
