It's Finally Fall! Sometimes, I cannot believe how quickly I embrace a new season and how, other times, I hold on so tightly. I love summer, but there is something about fall that seldom disappoints (unless you live in Upstate NY and it snows in October!) But the pumpkins, the food, the fall drinks, and the autumn-themed décor are all things fun, fun, fun! Maybe we should have used “Fun Fall” on the cover instead of “Finally Fall!”

This edition has a special treat (pun intended!). We took a field trip to “The Pumpkin Stand” in the fabulous Finger Lakes Region of New York. It was an experience for the senses. This wonderful pumpkin farm has been in business for 40 years, and we cannot wait to share the photos and their expert advice on all things pumpkins, squashes, and gourds. We also have a gluten-free chocolate pumpkin cookie recipe that seemed very appropriate for this issue.

Did I mention our expert contributors!? We have amazing ones in this issue! They share cruising etiquette as we enter the popular cruising months, and we also take a creative look at designing the perfect fall table. Our health contributor helps us navigate and stay healthy during the cold “ber” months and beyond as we take a look at olive leaves and all the health benefits.

HOW TO MAKE THANKSGIVING CLEANUP EASIER Use thanksgiving themed paper plates and napkins for dessert.

Clean as you prepare and prepare as much as possible ahead of time Put together take-home containers when putting thanksgiving food away (prevents having to bring out everything again!

Set up a dirty dish station (card table or other surface.)

Sort dished by similiar items and load dishwasher accordingly (using more than one wash, if needed) Implement the “everyone helps” (within reason) for at least ten minutes.

Fall Cruise Etiquette

“Ladies and Gentlemen. This is Captain Highseas speaking. Currently we are docked in Nassau, Bahamas, water depth is 39 feet, distance to the Turks and Caicos Islands is 360 miles, and the expected weather for the rest of the day is 80°F. We will be departing in approximately 20 minutes….”

I was excited to go on my first cruise from Perth via Bali a couple of years ago, and then onward to Singapore; it was an exciting adventure filled with relaxation, exploration, and new experiences.

There are a few key points to consider to ensure your journey is as enjoyable as possible for yourself and your fellow passengers.

Safety First You’ll typically participate in a mandatory safety drill called the “muster drill.” This drill is crucial for ensuring all passengers know what to do in an emergency. Emergencies happen, and it’s best to learn how to deal with them even though all you may want to do is settle into your cabin, unpack your bag, eat and begin to enjoy your vacation!Before the muster drill is complete, you may hear something like, “I have pleasure in informing you that all safety equipment is in full working order. The bow/stern doors are closed and secure. The ship is in all respects ready for sea. Please listen carefully to the safety instructions which follow. In the unlikely event of an emergency, please obey the orders on the ”public address system.”

Respect Your Fellow Cruisers

“When the ship is in port, and you choose to do an onshore excursion, always return on time. Ships adhere to strict schedules and won’t wait for late passengers or staff.”

Keep noise to a minimum, especially during quiet hours. Avoid loud conversations in hallways and slamming doors, and remember that walls are thin—keep noise to a minimum to avoid disturbing your neighbors.

Be mindful of other guests' space while sunbathing or lounging by the pool. Avoid spreading personal items out too much or reserving loungers with towels for extended periods.

While perusing the buffet for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, be aware that many people are hungry and want their food too. What I like to do is first take a walk and survey what is available. Secondly, I will then line up, take a plate, take the food that appeals most to me, and quickly find a table. So, serve yourself in moderation and avoid piling food on your plate.

Pay attention to dress codes for different areas of the ship and dining venues or events, such as formal nights, casual dining, or themed parties. Not only does this show respect for your fellow passengers, but it also enhances the overall atmosphere of the ship, and who doesn’t want a great night to remember?

Show Appreciation to the Crew.

I plan to get to know the crew and those working hard for their families back home. I follow the simple rule: ‘When I am happy, staff are happy.’ The crew works hard and long hours to ensure your comfort and enjoyment. A simple “thank you” goes a long way, even a quick note to the captain and his team.

I know it’s not the most enjoyable subject, but try to keep the restrooms clean and tidy. Flush toilets, dispose of waste properly and be mindful of the crew’s schedule.

Avoid excessive requests or unreasonable demands.

Tipping is customary on cruise ships. It is a proper way to show appreciation for the crew that provided excellent service, and attaching a small thankyou note is a nice touch.

So, bon voyage! Practicing good cruise ship etiquette ensures a pleasant experience for everyone on board. Small acts of consideration— go a long way in making the voyage smooth and memorable for all.

The active ingredient, called oleuropein, is responsible for strong anti-inflammatory effects and other health benefits, mainly when used in an olive leaf extract or tea.

Olive trees have a long history dating back about 6,000 years. They are thought to be one of the oldest cultivated plants. Since biblical times, the olive tree has stood as a symbol of peace and unity, especially when its branches are offered. Olive oil symbolizes purity, and the olive branch represents peace and prosperity.

The olive leaf is one of the most common and traditional herbs used among Mediterranean people to treat many diseases. The leaves also have notable pharmacological properties and can be effective for improving brain function and cognition, helping to reduce cancer cells and tumors, cardiovascular health, neuroprotection, and diabetes, and helping to lower blood sugar, reduce depression, moisturize skin and hair care, regulate blood pressure, and lower cholesterol.

Olive leaves, in the form of an extract or tea, are easily absorbed and can be a versatile addition to your cooking.

Dried olive leaves can be used in any savory recipe, much like other Italian spices. Their unique flavor can enhance a variety of dishes, and a few drops of extract can add a delightful twist to your culinary creations.

Olive leaf tea is a great way to capture the benefits of olive leaves. You can purchase olive-leaf tea in tea bags or buy dried leaves and tea bags to create the tea yourself. When purchasing any extracts, teas, or supplements, look for certified organic companies.

Always consult with your healthcare providers before incorporating any supplements or ingesting them for health benefits. This ensures the supplements are safe and suitable for your health needs.

THE PUMPKIN STAND

We took our first field trip

for Etiquette-Home and Lifestyle Magazine in late September and visited The Pumpkin Stand in the Finger Lakes Region in Ovid, New York.

The owners, Ellen Eastman Smith and Ryan W. Smith graciously welcomed us to their farm, which has been in their family for three generations. Ellen sat down with me for a delightful conversation and then a tour as we discussed all things pumpkins, squashes, and family farming.

Ellen, a marketing expert (in her previous prossional life), took over the family farm with her husband ten years ago. Her dad, Dave Eastman, and mom, Brenda, known as “the pumpkin lady,” farmed the land, and before that, Ellen’s Great Uncle Earnie in the 1970s sold pumpkins and squash door to door. In the 1990s, the pumpkin farm was a stand, hence the name, The Pumpkin Stand. Brenda sold pumpkins from a roadside stand, which quickly went from a stand to a shed and now a full farm, as pictured here.

THE PUMPKIN STAND We toured the barn built and manufactured

by J.N. Wilson an important historical point because he was the son of the original settlers of Ovid, NY. In the barn, We were introduced to the pumpkin wash plant (think gold rush but smaller) and met the family (three generations that live and work on the farm).

The farm consists of 60 acres, and a spectacular U-Pick pumpkin patch would rival Charlie Brown’s patch any day! The squash room has unique and exciting varieties such as mashed potato squash, turks turban, kabocha, delicata squash, and numerous other varieties (and recipes) that can be found on their website: thepumpkinstand.com. And did we mention pumpkins!? There were Cinderella pumpkins, mystic pie, flat white boar, moonlight fairytale, and many other pumpkin varieties.

Think picture perfect, but not to be fooled; it is hard, rewarding work, as Ellen shared with us. Ellen is always watching the weather, acquiring seeds and picking and washing, (and washing some more!) pumpkins and squash.

We also enjoyed hearing her expert advice about pumpkins and squash. From recipes to health benefits, as well as helping her customers purchase the perfect squash for their palate. There is a lovely balance of fall activities at The Pumpkin Stand, such as hayrides and corn mazes, without sacrificing the serenity and beauty of the farm.

by Brenda (the pumpkin lady), local honey, syrups, merch, and painted pumpkins by local artist Missy Griswold, whose hand-painted pumpkins often sell out and are wildly popular. Lastly, a sweet children’s play area makes this the perfect location for all ages!

“Where Memories Are Made!”

Ellen emphasized the collaboratve effort at The Pumpkin Stand. The 60-acre farm runs smoothly thanks to the dedicated team, some of whom have been a part of the operation for decades. Bob Sibley, for instance, assists with hayrides and school groups and even helped build the original pumpkin shed.

Ellen stressed that the operation's success results from the collective effort of those working in the store, those involved in farming, and every step in between.

The Pumpkin Stand also partners with local businesses, such as food and craft vendors, to give other small businesses a platform.

October 5th is their 40th Anniversary Celebration, and their social media pages have all their fall activities and events.

I found myself wanting to linger a little longer (and I did!). I left with an armful of beautiful squash and pumpkins.

The Pumpkin Stand perfectly balances all things farm, autumn, and fun! So, whether you are local to the Finger Lakes Region or live miles away, this stop is, without question, a fall bucket list “must!”

Whether hosting a festive dinner or simply wanting to elevate your everyday meals, creating a fall table setting can be a rewarding way to celebrate the season.

Start with a Seasonal Color Palette The foundation of any beautiful table setting is the color palette. Think rich, warm tones like burnt orange, deep reds, earthy browns, and golden yellows for fall. These colors reflect the natural beauty of autumn and set a cozy, inviting tone. Consider incorporating neutral tones such as creamy whites, soft grays, or deep greens to add depth. These shades can balance the more vibrant autumn colors and create a sophisticated look.

Choose the Right Table Linens Your table linens—tablecloths, runners, and napkins—serve as the backdrop for your entire setting. Opt for natural materials like linen or cotton in warm, earthy tones. A burnt orange or deep red tablecloth can make a bold statement, while a neutral runner with subtle fall patterns adds a touch of elegance. Select Dinnerware that Complements the Season Your choice of dinnerware can tie together the entire table setting.

PUMKIN PIE INGREDIENTS: 1 cup canned pumpkin 1/4 cup evaporated milk 1 cup milk 2 large eggs 1/2 T cornstarch 1/2 C brown sugar 2T granulated sugar 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/8 teaspoon allspice 1/8 teaspoon ground ginger 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 (9-inch) homemade or unbaked pie crust ground nutmeg

INSTRUCTIONS: Prepare unbaked 9-inch pie shell Preheat oven to 350 degrees Combine eggs, evaporated milk, milk, and pumpkin in a bowl and mix with an electric mixer. Blend at a low speed until smooth. Sift together dry ingredients, except nutmeg, into a pumpkin mix.

Blend at high speed until smooth. Pour into prepared unbaked pie shell. Sprinkle with nutmeg.

Bake for 30 minutes or until the crust is lightly browned and the filling is set. Let cool at room temperature. Makes 6-8 servings.

Directions Roll out ½ pastry for the bottom crust. Fit loosely into a 9-inch pie pan. Start oven very hot, 425 degrees Combine sugar, spices, salt, flour, tea and lemon juice.

Mix well. Alternate slices of apples, and sugar mixture until pan is filled, heaping slightly in the center. Dot with butter. Roll out the top crust and cut slits for steam to escape. Place over the apple filling. Trim pastry and press edges together with fork tines.

Bake for 40-50 minutes or until the apples are tender and the crust is browned. This recipe makes about 6-8 servings.

Serve warm with sharp cheddar wedges.

HOLIDAY SEASON PUMPKIN NUT BREAD

Ingredients 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon baking soda ¼ teaspoon salt 1 1/2 cups sugar 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg Mix these six ingredients. Make a well in the mixture then add:

1 cup pumpkin 1/3 cup water 2 eggs, beaten 1/2 cup choppped pecans (if desired) 1/2 cup cooking oil 1/2 teaspoon vanilla 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips (optional)

Directions Stir carefully, just enough to combine and dampen ingredients. Pour into loaf pans (should make two large loaves.) Bake at 350 degrees for about 55 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean.

GLUTEN FREE CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES These easy pumpkin cookies are a fall favorite, packed with pumpkin flavor and chocolate. They’re moist, delicious, and perfect with a pumpkin spice latte.

Instructions Ingredients 1 cup granulated sugar ½ cup packed brown sugar 15-ounce can of 100% pumpkin ½ cup vegetable oil 1 large egg 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 ½ cups gluten-free 1:1 baking flour 1 tablespoon pumpkin pie spice 2 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon baking soda 1.2 teaspoon salt 1 ½ cups chocolate chips

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and line baking sheets with parchment paper.

2. Mix wet ingredients in a mixer (granulated sugar, brown sugar, pumpkin, and oil) for 1-2 minutes. Then add the egg and vanilla and mix to combine.

3. In a medium bowl, mix together gluten-free flour, pumpkin pie spice, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients in the stand mixer (or with a hand mixer) on lower to medium speed until combined.

4. Stir in the chocolate chips. Scoop 1 ½ tablespoon size scoops onto the baking sheet and bake for 14-16 minutes. Enjoy!

Notes: Storage: Store the cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or refrigerate for up to a week.
