We hope you’ve had a lovely summer, I have a feeling it’s going to extend into autumn.
Muylen is here in Sheffield, she arrived at the beginning of July. So we’ve been having a lovely time together after so much time apart, not all of it under the easiest of circumstances.
In August we went on a retreat to a place called Lee Abbey, in Devon, we totally love it there and heartily recommend it to you if you ever feel the need to leave the world behind for a while, or even a couple of years.
It was originally an old Abbey, then a Country Estate, which became a boarding school during the World War 2, and was then purchased as a Christian retreat, which it still is, 70 odd years later.
If you really feel like a change of life, Lee Abbey has vacancies for full time community members. Around 40 people live and work there, on a semi permanent basis, alongside100 or so people living as guests for the week. It would be a fascinating way to live for a while, self contained on a 288 acre estate, complete with private beach.
And if you like fishing...
Moving on, most of this edition’s good works are in Cambodia, Muylen arranged for a couple of local pastors to continue the good work whilst she was away. We are both going back to Cambodia this month, September, for a month, to do more good works and to complete the paperwork for our marriage. YAY!
Healthwise, we are good, all is well, there’s still a few tweaks here and there but the storm has passed.

She was robbed whilst going to the cash point near her home. She has a crime reference number to give to the council to try to get moved. The flats and area she lives in is saturated with drugs, addicts, dealers, and crime. Most people in her situation supplement their benefits with shoplifting or prostitution, but she won’t and doesn’t, but the benefits are hardly enough to live on. There is no answer, only to support. ‘The poor will always be with you’.

She’s done well to sort her life out, still struggling financially because it’s impossible to survive on just benefits, she receives around £50 a week to actually spend, and that includes food and electricity. Our once or maybe twice a month food parcels make the difference between having no food in the house, and having a week worth of food in the house. Just about surviving really.

His name is Kreith; close to 70 years old. He lost his only bread-winner daughter. She used to support him while she was alive. She passed away during Covid-19.
Mr. Kreith received some small fund from here and there to build a little cottage to live. He’s got a small piece of land which he can grow some vegetables to survive.
Once his crops is ready to be sold, he pick them and goes around the local markets to sell them.

We have delivered food parcel to one old woman . Her name is Kim Torn; 79 years old. she has no children to support her. She lives alone on a small cottage. Her neighbours feeds her sometimes. Inside her poor cottage, there is a coffin, a donation from someone which really pleased her. Old people always worry that when they die, they don’t want to feel embarrassed that they can’t afford a decent funeral or coffin.

We have delivered food parcels to Mr. Sor Tol; 50 years old. We found out from his son that the family ran out of rice. He has a small house but has heaps of debt. His son has to migrate to other place to find work to support the family.
His wife used to have a mental brain issue. The family used to live inside a Buddhist temple, struggling to make a living.

Mr. Kun; 50 years old. He has two teenage children. He works for a non-profit making small income to pay off a big debt. Through running a small village grocery, making ends-meet, the family still needs rice to eat.
His family fell into debts because of some scams and cheating from an agency promising to find job abroad for his son.
Similar to Mr. Kun, many other villagers have been cheated. Some have to leave their homelands and end up being beggars in the city or becoming migrant workers in other countries. We found one family who had to flee their village because of debt and ended up living on a dumpsite.

We have delivered food parcels to one old woman . Her name is Yoy; 78 years old. she doesn’t have a house. She just comes and lives around with her children who feed her.
She sometimes goes inside a forest to find plants and make them into traditional medicine and sell. Recently, she just lost one of her children who is always drunken.
Status: Poor widow, Location: Choueng Prey village, Choueng Prey commune, Bathay district, Kompong Cham province.

We have delivered food parcel to one woman name is Choy , about 65 years old. We have distributed an aid package for her before. We decided to deliver this time because her kids who normally feed her left and migrated into another community. Therefore, she needs more support while her kids moving away.
We reported that her husband once hit her with a boat oar. She lives with the painful memories and traumatized behaviour.
She has 5 children, two of whom go to secondary and high school. Surprisingly, her kids are the only children who keep their commitment in school most of the kids in their village drop out.
Status: Poor widow with 5 children, Location: Korkrovieng village, Korkrovieng commune, Cheoung Prey district, Kompong Cham province.

Though her small house, she is kind enough to share this small house with her poor widow friend.
She has been inactive (sick) due to her sickness. She used to work as construction worker (sweatshop type of work). She makes little income and struggle to feed her daughter and her old mother in law.

We have delivered food parcel to a very poor widow about 7 years. After her husband left her, she had to take care of 4 children.
She makes her living by finding firewood and finding leaf-ants to sell. She makes about 3 USD per day. Sometimes she has to supplement her family needs by hunting out for crabs or fish at rice paddies.
Her children leave their kids with her to take care of. Every now and then she also gets some support from her children for grandchildren.
Status: Poor widow taking of care of 4 children and grandchildren.

All her children grew up and gone away. She now lives with a grandchild.
She makes a living by going around to find water lily (green plants) naturally grown on the fields. She picks them and sell them at small revenue, merely enough to feed herself and the child.
She doesn’t have a house. She has been, at a small cottage, living with her poor widow niece.
Status: Poor widow taking of a grandchild.

This is KY Mesa , 17, in grade 10 in high school. He lives alone as his parents migrated to work in the city 4 years ago.
He struggles with the needs every things now and then when it comes to life alone and school. Yet, he is a hard working young man and never give up. He is continuing his school.
He is from a far village. He drives his motor to come to study free computer class provided by our NGO – Living Water Farm, and to offer helping hands whenever he is available from school.
He desires to be a public school teacher in the future.
Status: Poor young boy living alone without parents around.

We’ve delivered food parcels to name Yay Mut , she is a lonely granny making her living from selling little kids- cakes in front of her old cottage.
Though she is old, she is still kind to share with others. She tried to impress her that she share her food with Buddhist monks who come ask for her.
At her 90s, a bit of fragile health condition, she still makes her own food, and gets her life moving on.

Her neighbour said she has a nephew who feeds her sometimes and the many time she has to be fed by her neighbours. She live in a small, broken wall and broken roof old house.

This is granny Nov, about 70s. She is a village chief but she is not well fed. She receives some supports from her son but it is not enough to enjoy. She is well respected in her hill community. She solves conflicts, restore relationships and keep her security in her community safe. She also provides with her little resources to those in need.

Her name is Prak Net, about 65. Originally, she was born in Kampot. Due to her religious cause, she moved to live in this hill community, serving Buddhist monks and poor families here. By serving temples here, she receives food to feed herself. Though, she is not a believer, she said she would go and join our Christian services if available in her community. As we gave this package to her, some of her neighbors felt jealous because they see her being with religious events up on the peak, more resources. It’s hard for our team to judge the reality of the situation. When we arrived about to distribute the packages, this woman came to her, keep knocking the door of donations. I had to give because of her endless approaching us.

This is Pom Su, 76 years old. She lives alone here in this small cottage. People share crops with her and entrust her to look after a few cows. This is how she makes her daily income, picking some leaves , collecting ants nests, and firewood... 40 years, her husband died and she has to live by herself. She does have a few children who got their own families.

This is our second time we distributed this rice package for her. She approached us again, and begged for rice to eat. We learnt that she and her husband don’t have enough to eat. It was a bit difficult to reject her coming us begging us again. We visited her when we gave the rice. We saw her husband being drunk. We were wondering if the husband could really make a living for the family. The two live together as husband and wife, walking around the hill helping others or providing some labour for some food or cash at religious gathering. Her name is Mou Sokheng, 55 years old. She lives with her violent husband. She has two children who are grown-up now. Her husband is alcoholic. Domestic violence is pretty common in her family. She makes a living from cleaning plates dishes during religious events in her hill community.
She also lives from asking food from people around. Her two grown up children also struggling with their income, thus they can’t afford to support her. Status: Poor family with alcoholic and violent husband,

She delivered her baby at a public maternity with little finance.

Which? Car Mechanic...
Dave. At Ecclesall Garage. He’s a car whisperer. He can fix anything. Nicely.
Life has taught me many lessons. One of these lessons is that I am not a car mechanic. Dave is a car mechanic. Bird is not a car mechanic. I feel this would be a good opening to a childrens book detailing the differences between people who know what they are on about and people who stand there like a cow watching tv. Mooo.
I took my trusty steed (Vauxhall Vectra 1.8i, basically a rep wagon from a decade ago) to see Dave, because I was going to drive to Devon and possibly even back again and I wanted to have good odds of it not breaking down on a tiny country lane with no phone reception and a tractor fore and aft.
Also, and it sounds minor, my windscreen wipers we not quite right. The one on the driver’s side would fly off the windscreen at every wipe and when it rained hard they would both flail around like a ninjas nunchucks. I had tolerated this little idiosyncrasy for a year, and only mentioned in to Dr Dave in passing, but he’s one of those chaps that likes to make things right, he likes to identify problems and fix them. I’ve often thought that if ever there’s an event like The Day of the Triffids, I’d pop over to Dave’s to see if he could still see, because he’s a jolly useful chap to have in any apocalypse.
Anyway, my wipers, Dave, bless his acrylic socks soaked in brake fluid diagnosed the problem. They were knackered. And so he ordered replacement blades and another bit and fitted them, then realised the actual wipers were the wrong way round, the left and right were in the wrong place, so he swopped them over. The man is a genius. I am a cow watching tv. Mooo.
