About UPAAGLA The University of the Philippines Alumni Association of Greater Los Angeles or UPAAGLA was chartered and recognized as a chapter of the main U.P. Alumni Association in the Philippines in 1999.
UPAAGLA’s mission and vision are to link, build, network, and sustain lifelong relationships among alumni from different colleges and organizations in the various U.P. campuses, particularly those residing in the Greater Los Angeles area, from Kern County to Orange County; and to enlighten its members and other alumni to share their resources, talents, and efforts with their Alma Mater. With only a few members on its onset, UPAAGLA has grown its current membership to over 200 alumni. Through the years, UPAAGLA has engaged its members through various social, educational, and civic activities. Over the years, UPAAGLA has established a professorial chair; responded to various emergency relief efforts; awarded a five-year scholarship; and raised funds to donate to a senior thesis grant program for five consecutive years, and to the UP Diliman Main Library Laptop Program.
In 2019 as it marks its 20th anniversary, UPAAGLA started building a robust endowment fund and has continued to engage U.P. alumni to foster the spirit of giving back to their Alma Mater. In just over a year and at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, UPAAGLA has disbursed over PhP 1.8 million to the University of the Philippines. U.P. College of Engineering Senior Thesis Grant - $2,000.00 Emergency Relief Effort (Mindanao Earthquake) - $1,000.00 Emergency Relief Effort (Taal Eruption) - $1,000.00 Stranded Students in U.P. Los Banos and U.P. Visayas - $2,000.00 COVID-19 U.P. PGH Hazmat Project in partnership with Beta Epsilon- $2,200.00 (including $1,200.00 in direct donation) U.P. During its 2019-2021 term, UPAAGLA has achieved record-breaking milestones in addition to surpassing its fundraising and giving goals for the University of the Philipines. It kicked off the term with the most attended Installation of Officers & Endowment Fundraising Gala in September of 2019 with over 300 guests and hosted stellar U.P. alumni guests including the Philippine Vice President, Her Excellency Maria Leonor G. Robredo.
It expanded its alumni network throughout its coverage area and beyond through its social events both physically before the pandemic and virtually through the pandemic. UPAAGLA highlighted alumni members in its education programs that are open to the community at large: Big Words Demystified: Fil-Am Authors on Artificial Intelligence and Sustainability UPAAGLA Symposium Series #1: Explore. Empower. Excel. Filipinx: Re-Discovered. Re-Imagined.
The first Alumni Awards program culminated in this evening's awards presentation was launched in 2019 to raise the profile of U.P. alumni in the Greater Los Angeles area.

Virgilio Guinto UPAAGLA Treasurer, 2011-2021
As the UPAAGLA Treasurer for ten years, Gil, as he is known to his fellow UPAAGLA Board members, is one of the pillars of our alumni association. It is no easy task to be the Treasurer of a nonprofit organization in a volunteer capacity for ten years. We are very lucky to serve your last term. "Thank you, Gil, so much for the many times you had to go to the bank to do wire transfers or remittances to fund emergency relief efforts and scholarships especially at the height of the pandemic; for all the many long hours of meetings to work on streamlining our finance report; for taking the lead in ensuring that all the monies that come in to and go out from our record-breaking 2019 Gala are all accounted for along with our other successful fundraising events. We sincerely appreciate your great support and generosity in all our UPAAGLA initiatives." -Ethel G. Rubio, UPAAGLA President
Alma H. Onrubia † UPAAGLA Past President, 2009-2011 Trustee, Friends of U.P. Foundation in America
As a UPAAGLA Past President, Alma was a great mentor to the new UPAAGLA leadership. She exemplifies what it is to be a true U.P. alumna. She gave back to our alma mater strategically, without any hesitation, and reached out to fellow U.P. alumni outside of her circle. Her presence has been a staple in many if not all UPAAGLA events. She reached out to us, the 2019-2021 leadership, and extended support in all our UPAAGLA initiatives during this current term.
"Thank you so much, Alma, for your friendship and your encouragement. Through your mentorship and guidance, we were able to formulate the foundation of the UPAAGLA Alumni Awards program and carried it out to its successful completion. Although you were not able to share this virtual presentation with us in this physical world, I know you enjoyed watching it from your big screen in heaven. You truly have an exceedingly kind heart, and the U.P. Alumni Association of Greater Los Angeles has benefited greatly from your generosity, wisdom, and fellowship. " -- Ethel Rubio, UPAAGLA President

DEXTER HEMEDEZ dexterhemedez@gmail.com
Dexter Hemedez is a Filipino screenwriter who wrote for various top-rated series in ABS-CBN, the largest broadcasting network in the Philippines. One of the series that he wrote entitled “Be Careful With My Heart” became a huge phenomenon as it marked milestones in television ratings, spawned best-selling merchandises, boosted advertising revenues of ABS-CBN and was distributed worldwide. It was also recognized for its exceptional contribution in Philippine television as it veered away from the usual heaviness of contemporary series in the country and instead offered joy, laughter, hope and uplifting message to the viewers. After a decade of writing soap operas and feature films in the Philippines, Dexter directed, wrote and produced his debut feature entitled “1st Sem” together with Allan Ibanez. Because of its impactful themes and universal appeal, the family-comedy feature received critical acclaim during its exhibitions in Asia, Europe and North America. Touted as a gem of a small film with a big heart, the film also served as a tool for character formation among adolescents in the Philippines. It is now available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video. Together with Allan, Dexter still continues to develop concepts and write scripts for film and television, most of which are centered on the experiences of Filipino immigrants in the United States and all over the world.

ALLAN IBANEZ allanmichaelibanez@gmail.com
After receiving mentorship from Ricky Lee, the most awarded screenwriter in the Philippines, through the sponsorship of ABS-CBN, the largest entertainment and media conglomerate in the Philippines, Allan Ibanez was hired by the network to write for the top-rated drama, Nasaan Ka Nang Kailangan Kita. He was also a part of the hit reality series Pinoy Big Bother All In, as well as ABS-CBN’s Content Monitoring and Development Group. While working at ABS-CBN, Allan wrote the screenplay of “1st Sem” which he also directed and produced together with Dexter Hemedez. The feature film bagged major awards from various international film festivals including Gold Remi Award at the 50th Worldfest Houston International Film Festival, Best Debut Feature Film at All Lights India International Film Festival, Grand Jury Award at San Diego Kids International Film Festival and many others. As a testament to its excellent storytelling, “1st Sem” received an “A” rating from the Cinema Evaluation Board, the highest grade given to any local film in the Philippines. It was exhibited at American Film Institute on November 8, 2017 through a special event organized by the University of the Philippines Alumni Association of Greater Los Angeles Area. Together with Dexter, Allan still continues to develop concepts and write scripts for film and television, most of which are centered on the experiences of Filipino immigrants in the United States and all over the world.
